Bioremediation of water containing pesticides by microalgae: Mechanisms, methods, and prospects for future research

Emerging technologies for the removal of pesticides from contaminated soils and their reuse in agriculture

Pesticides are becoming more prevalent in agriculture to protect crops and increase crop yields. However, nearly all pesticides used for this purpose reach non-target crops and remain as residues for extended periods. Contamination of soil by widespread pesticide use, as well as its toxicity to humans and other living organisms, is a global concern. This has prompted us to find solutions and develop alternative remediation technologies for sustainable management. This article reviews recent technological developments for remediating pesticides from contaminated soil, focusing on the following major points: (1) The application of various pesticide types and their properties, the sources of pesticides related to soil pollution, their transport and distribution, their fate, the impact on soil and human health, and the extrinsic and intrinsic factors that affect the remediation process are the main points of focus. (2) Sustainable pesticide degradation mechanisms and various emerging nano- and bioelectrochemical soil remediation technologies. (3) The feasible and long-term sustainable research and development approaches that are required for on-site pesticide removal from soils, as well as prospects for applying them directly in agricultural fields. In this critical analysis, we found that bioremediation technology has the potential for up to 90% pesticide removal from the soil. The complete removal of pesticides through a single biological treatment approach is still a challenging task; however, the combination of electrochemical oxidation and bioelectrochemical system approaches can achieve the complete removal of pesticides from soil. Further research is required to remove pesticides directly from soils in agricultural fields on a large-scale.

Bioremediation strategies against pesticides: an overview of current knowledge and innovations

Pesticides pose significant risks to both human health, such as cancer, neurological disorders, and endocrine disruption, and ecosystems, through the destruction of beneficial insects, contamination of soil and water, and impact on non-target species. In the face of escalating pesticide pollution, there is an urgent need for multifaceted approaches to address the issue. Bioremediation emerges as a potent tool in the environmental pollution mitigation arsenal. Ideally aiming for the complete decomposition of pesticides into harmless molecules, bioremediation encompasses diverse approaches - from bioabsorption, bioadsorption, and biotransformation using enzymes and nanoenzymes to comprehensive degradation facilitated by microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, macro- and microalgae, or phytoremediation. Exploring nature's biodiversity offers a promising avenue to find solutions to this pressing human-induced problem. The acceleration of biodegradation necessitates identifying and developing efficient organisms, achieved through bioprospection and targeted modifications. Specific strategies to enhance process efficiency and throughput include optimizing biomass production, strategic inoculation in diverse environments, and employing bioreactor systems for processing heavily contaminated waters or soils. This comprehensive review presents various bioremediation approaches, emphasizing the importance of microorganisms' exploration and new technologies development, including current innovations and patents to effectively combat pesticide pollution. Furthermore, challenges regarding the effective implementation of these technologies are also addressed.

Microalgae-mediated bioremediation: current trends and opportunities-a review

Environmental pollution poses a critical global challenge, and traditional wastewater treatment methods often prove inadequate in addressing the complexity and scale of this issue. On the other hand, microalgae exhibit diverse metabolic capabilities that enable them to remediate a wide range of pollutants, including heavy metals, organic contaminants, and excess nutrients. By leveraging the unique metabolic pathways of microalgae, innovative strategies can be developed to effectively remediate polluted environments. Therefore, this review paper highlights the potential of microalgae-mediated bioremediation as a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to conventional methods. It also highlights the advantages of utilizing microalgae and algae-bacteria co-cultures for large-scale bioremediation applications, demonstrating impressive biomass production rates and enhanced pollutant removal efficiency. The promising potential of microalgae-mediated bioremediation is emphasized, presenting a viable and innovative alternative to traditional treatment methods in addressing the global challenge of environmental pollution. This review identifies the opportunities and challenges for microalgae-based technology and proposed suggestions for future studies to tackle challenges. The findings of this review advance our understanding of the potential of microalgae-based technology wastewater treatment.

Enhancing photodegradation of thiamethoxam insecticide using SnS2/NCL as a photocatalyst: Mechanistic insights and environmental implications

The current research highlights the fabrication of a novel SnS2/CO32-@Ni-Co LDH (SnS2/NCL) by precipitating Ni-Co LDH over hydrothermally synthesized SnS2 nanoparticles for the enhanced degradation of thiamethoxam (THM) insecticide through the advanced oxidation process. The effect of several reaction parameters was optimized, and a maximum degradation of 98.1 ± 1.2 % with a rate constant of 0.0541 min-1 of 10 ppm THM was reached at a catalyst loading of 0.16 gL-1 using 0.3 mM of H2O2 within 70 min of visible light irradiation. The effect of metal cations, inorganic anions, dissolved organic matter, organic compounds and water samples on the photodegradation performance of SnS2/NCL nanocomposite was also examined to evaluate the prepared photocatalyst's suitability for use in actual wastewater conditions. The metal cations blocked the active sites of the photocatalyst and reduced the degradation efficiency except for Fe2+ ions, since it is a Fenton reagent and increased the production of hydroxyl radicals. Inorganic anions are the scavengers of hydroxyl radicals and hinder photocatalytic activity. Meanwhile, lake water containing varying degrees of co-existing ions shows the lowest degradation efficiency among other water samples. The SnS2/NCL nanocomposite could be reused for five cycles while maintaining a photocatalytic efficiency of 83.6 ± 0.3 % in the fifth run. The prepared SnS2/NCL nanocomposite also showed excellent photodegradation of several other emerging organic pollutants with an efficiency of over 80 % under optimum conditions. Incorporating Ni-Co LDH with SnS2 helped to delocalize photoinduced charges, leading to increased photocatalytic activity and a slower electron-hole recombination rate. The present research highlights the photocatalytic activity of SnS2/NCL photocatalysts for the photocatalytic degradation of emerging contaminants from wastewater.

Exploiting fly ash as an ecofriendly pesticide/nematicide on Abesmoschus esculuntus: Insights into soil amendment-induced antioxidant fight against nematode mediated ROS

Conventional pest control measures, such as chemical pesticides and nematicides, have limited efficacy and raise environmental concerns, necessitating sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives for pest management. Therefore, to find a complementary eco-friendly pesticide/nematicide, this study investigated the role of fly ash (FA) in managing a notorious pest, Meloidogyne javanica and its impact on the growth and physiology of Abelmoschus esculentus. Molecular characterization using SSU and LSU rDNA gene markers confirmed the identity of Indian M. javanica as belonging to the same species. Biotic stress induced by nematode infection was significantly alleviated (P < 0.05) by FA application at a 20% w/v, regulating of ROS accumulation (44.1% reduction in superoxide anions and 39.7% reduction in hydrogen peroxide content) in the host plant. Moreover, FA enhanced antioxidant defence enzymes like superoxide dismutase (46.6%) and catalase (112%) to combat nematode induced ROS. Furthermore, the application of FA at a 20% concentration significantly improved the biomass and biochemical attributes of okra. Fly ash also upregulated the activity of the important osmo-protectant proline (11.5 μmol/g FW) to mitigate nematode stress in host cells. Suppression of disease indices like gall index and reproduction factor, combined with in-vitro experiments, revealed that FA exhibits strong nematode mortality capacity and thus can be used as a sustainable and eco-friendly control agent against root-knot nematodes.

The role and mechanisms of microbes in dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and its residues bioremediation

Environmental contamination with dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) has sever effects on the ecosystem worldwide. DDT is a recalcitrant synthetic chemical with high toxicity and lipophilicity. It is also bioaccumulated in the food chain and causes genotoxic, estrogenic, carcinogenic, and mutagenic effects on aquatic organisms and humans. Microbial remediation mechanism and its enzymes are very important for removing DDT from environment. DDT and its main residues dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (DDD) can biodegrade slowly in soil and water. To enhance this process, a number of strategies are proposed, such as bio-attenuation, biostimulation, bioaugmentation and the manipulation of environmental conditions to enhance the activity of microbial enzymes. The addition of organic matter and flooding of the soil enhance DDT degradation. Microbial candidates for DDT remediation include micro-algae, fungi and bacteria. This review provide brief information and recommendation on microbial DDT remediation and its mechanisms.

One-step bioremediation of hypersaline and nutrient-rich food industry process water with a domestic microbial community containing diatom Halamphora coffeaeformis

Proper treatment of hypersaline and nutrient-rich food industry process water (FIPW) is challenging in conventional wastewater plants. Insufficient treatment leads to serious environmental hazards. However, bioremediation of FIPW with an indigenous microbial community can not only recover nutrients but generate biomass of diverse applications. In this study, monoculture of Halamphora coffeaeformis, together with synthetic bacteria isolated from a local wastewater plant, successfully recovered 91% of NH4+-N, 78% of total nitrogen, 95% of total phosphorus as well as 82% of total organic carbon from medium enriched with 10% FIPW. All identified organic acids and amino acids, except oxalic acid, were completely removed after 14 days treatment. A significantly higher biomass concentration (1.74 g L-1) was achieved after 14 days treatment in the medium with 10% FIPW than that in a nutrient-replete lab medium as control. The harvested biomass could be a potential feedstock for high-value biochemicals and fertilizer production, due to fucoxanthin accumulation (3 mg g-1) and a fantastic performance in P assimilation. Metagenomic analysis revealed that bacteria community in the algal system, dominated by Psychrobacter and Halomonas, also contributed to the biomass accumulation and uptake of nutrients. Transcriptomic analysis further disclosed that multiple pathways, involved in translation, folding, sorting and degradation as well as transport and catabolism, were depressed in H. coffeaeformis grown in FIPW-enriched medium, as compared to the control. Collectively, the proposed one-step strategy in this work offers an opportunity to achieve sustainable wastewater management and a way towards circular economy.

Removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from produced water using the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris cultivated in mixotrophic and heterotrophic conditions

Chlorella vulgaris was cultivated for 15 days in 10 different treatments under mixotrophic and heterotrophic conditions, using wastewater from oil and poultry industries as the culture medium. The blends were made with produced water (PW), sterilized produced water (PWs), sterilized poultry wastewater (PoWs), sterilized seawater (SWs), and the addition of sodium nitrate to evaluate cell growth in treatments and the removal of PAHs. The heterotrophic condition showed more effective removal, having an initial concentration of 3.93 μg L-1 and a final concentration of 0.57 μg L-1 of total PAHs reporting 83%, during phycoremediation of (PW) than the mixotrophic condition, with an initial concentration of 3.93 μg L-1 and a final concentration of 1.96 and 43% removal for the PAHs. In the heterotrophic condition, the blend with (PWs + SWs) with an initial concentration of 0.90 μg L-1 and a final concentration of 0.32 μg L-1 had 64% removal of total PAHs compared to the mixotrophic condition with 37% removal having an initial concentration of 0.90 μg L-1 and a final concentration of 0.56 μg L-1. However, the best result in the mixotrophic condition was obtained using a blend of (PWs + PoWs) that had an initial cell concentration of 1.18 × 105 cells mL-1 and reached a final cell concentration of 4.39 × 105 cells mL-1, an initial concentration of 4.76 μg L-1 and a final concentration of 0.37 μg L-1 having a 92% total removal of PAHs. The biostimulation process increased the percentage of PAHs removal by 45% (PW) in the mixotrophic condition. This study showed that it is possible to allow an environmental remediation strategy that significantly reduces effluent toxicity and generates high value-added biomass in contaminated effluents rich in nutrients and carbon, based on a circular bioeconomy model.

Microbial assisted multifaceted amelioration processes of heavy-metal remediation: a clean perspective toward sustainable and greener future

Rapidly increasing heavy metal waste has adversely affected the environment and the Earth's health. The lack of appropriate remediation technologies has worsened the issue globally, especially in developing countries. Heavy-metals contaminants have severely impacted the environment and led to devastating conditions owing to their abundance and reactivity. As they are nondegradable, the potential risk increases even at a low concentration. However, heavy-metal remediation has increased with the up-gradation of technologies and integration of new approaches. Also, of all the treatment methodologies, microbial-assisted multifaceted approach for ameliorating heavy metals is a promising strategy for propagating the idea of a green and sustainable environment with minimal waste aggregation. Microbial remediation combined with different biotechniques could aid in unraveling new methods for eradicating heavy metals. Thus, the present review focuses on various microbial remediation approaches and their affecting factors, enabling recapitulation of the interplay between heavy-metals ions and microorganisms. Additionally, heavy-metals remediation mechanisms adapted by microorganisms, the role of genetically modified (GM) microorganisms, life cycle assessment (LCA), techno-economic assessment (TEA) limitations, and prospects of microbial-assisted amelioration of heavy-metals have been elaborated in the current review with focus toward "sustainable and greener future."

Harnessing the potential of microalgae-based systems for mitigating pesticide pollution and its impact on their metabolism

Due to increased pesticide usage in agriculture, a significant concentration of pesticides is reported in the environment that can directly impact humans, aquatic flora, and fauna. Utilizing microalgae-based systems for pesticide removal is becoming more popular because of their environmentally friendly nature, ability to degrade pesticide molecules into simpler, nontoxic molecules, and cost-effectiveness of the technology. Thus, this review focused on the efficiency, mechanisms, and factors governing pesticide removal using microalgae-based systems and their effect on microalgal metabolism. A wide range of pesticides, like atrazine, cypermethrin, malathion, trichlorfon, thiacloprid, etc., can be effectively removed by different microalgal strains. Some species of Chlorella, Chlamydomonas, Scenedesmus, Nostoc, etc., are documented for >90% removal of different pesticides, mainly through the biodegradation mechanism. The antioxidant enzymes such as ascorbate peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase, as well as the complex structure of microalgae cell walls, are mainly involved in eliminating pesticides and are also crucial for the defense mechanism of microalgae against reactive oxygen species. However, higher pesticide concentrations may alter the biochemical composition and gene expression associated with microalgal growth and metabolism, which may vary depending on the type of strain, the pesticide type, and the concentration. The final section of this review discussed the challenges and prospects of how microalgae can become a successful tool to remediate pesticides.

Physiological regulation of microalgae under cadmium stress and response mechanisms of time-series analysis using metabolomics

The investigation of heavy metal wastewater treatment utilizing microalgae adsorption has been extensively demonstrated. However, the response mechanism based on metabolomics to analyze the time-series changes of microalgae under Cd stress has not been described in detail. In this study, SEM/TEM demonstrated that Cd accumulated on the cell surface of microalgae and was bioconcentrated in the cytoplasm, vesicles, and chloroplasts. Carbonyl/quinone/ketone/carboxyl groups (OCO), membrane polysaccharides (OH), and phospholipids (PO) were involved in the interaction of Cd ions, and the chlorophyll content underwent a process of decreasing in the early stage (1.62 mg/g at 48 h) and recovering to the normal level in the late stage, and the contents of MDA, GSH, and SOD were all increased (29.7 nmol/g, 0.23 mg/g, and 30.01 u/106 cells) and then gradually returned to the steady state. The results of EPS content and fluorescent labeling showed that Cd induced the overexpression and synthesis of extracellular polysaccharides and proteins, which is one of the defense mechanisms participating in the reduction of cellular damage by complexed Cd. Metabolomics results indicated that the malate synthesis pathway was activated after Cd-20 h, and the microalgal cells began to shift the metabolic pathway to storage lipid or polysaccharide biosynthesis. In the Calvin cycle, the expression of D-Sedoheptulose 7-phosphate in Cd-20 h_vs_ck and Cd-72 h_vs_Cd-20 h firstly declined and then increased, and the photosynthesis system was suppressed at the beginning, and then gradually returned to normal to maintain the successful development of the dark reaction. The results of time series analysis revealed that the response of microalgae to Cd was categorized into fast response and slow response to regulate cell adsorption and growth metabolism.

Strategies for mitigation of pesticides from the environment through alternative approaches: A review of recent developments and future prospects

Chemical-based peticides are having negative impacts on both the healths of human beings and plants as well. The World Health Organisation (WHO), reported that each year, >25 million individuals in poor nations are having acute pesticide poisoning cases along with 20,000 fatal injuries at global level. Normally, only ∼0.1% of the pesticide reaches to the intended targets, and rest amount is expected to come into the food chain/environment for a longer period of time. Therefore, it is crucial to reduce the amounts of pesticides present in the soil. Physical or chemical treatments are either expensive or incapable to do so. Hence, pesticide detoxification can be achieved through bioremediation/biotechnologies, including nano-based methodologies, integrated approaches etc. These are relatively affordable, efficient and environmentally sound methods. Therefore, alternate strategies like as advanced biotechnological tools like as CRISPR Cas system, RNAi and genetic engineering for development of insects and pest resistant plants which are directly involved in the development of disease- and pest-resistant plants and indirectly reduce the use of pesticides. Omics tools and multi omics approaches like metagenomics, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics for the efficient functional gene mining and their validation for bioremediation of pesticides also discussed from the literatures. Overall, the review focuses on the most recent advancements in bioremediation methods to lessen the effects of pesticides along with the role of microorganisms in pesticides elimination. Further, pesticide detection is also a big challenge which can be done by using HPLC, GC, SERS, and LSPR ELISA etc. which have also been described in this review.

Advancement of Carotenogenesis of Astaxanthin from Haematococcus pluvialis: Recent Insight and Way Forward

The demand for astaxanthin has been increasing for many health applications ranging from pharmaceuticals, food, cosmetics, and aquaculture due to its bioactive properties. Haematococcus pluvialis is widely recognized as the microalgae species with the highest natural accumulation of astaxanthin, which has made it a valuable source for industrial production. Astaxanthin produced by other sources such as chemical synthesis or fermentation are often produced in the cis configuration, which has been shown to have lower bioactivity. Additionally, some sources of astaxanthin, such as shrimp, may denature or degrade when exposed to high temperatures, which can result in a loss of bioactivity. Producing natural astaxanthin through the cultivation of H. pluvialis is presently a demanding and time-consuming task, which incurs high expenses and restricts the cost-effective industrial production of this valuable substance. The production of astaxanthin occurs through two distinct pathways, namely the cytosolic mevalonate pathway and the chloroplast methylerythritol phosphate (MEP) pathway. The latest advancements in enhancing product quality and extracting techniques at a reasonable cost are emphasized in this review. The comparative of specific extraction processes of H. pluvialis biological astaxanthin production that may be applied to large-scale industries were assessed. The article covers a contemporary approach to optimizing microalgae culture for increased astaxanthin content, as well as obtaining preliminary data on the sustainability of astaxanthin production and astaxanthin marketing information.

Comparing the removal efficiency of diisobutyl phthalate by Bacillariophyta, Cyanophyta and Chlorophyta

The utilization of microalgae for both removing phthalate esters (PAEs) from wastewater and producing bioenergy has become a popular research topic. However, there is a lack of studies comparing the effectiveness of different types of microalgae in removing these harmful compounds. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate and compare the efficiency of various processes, such as hydrolysis, photolysis, adsorption, and biodegradation, in removing diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP) using six different species of microalgae. The study indicated that the average removal efficiency of DiBP (initial concentrations of 5, 0.5, and 0.05 mg L-1) by all six microalgae (initial cell density of 1 × 106 cells mL-1) was in the order of Scenedesmus obliquus (95.39 %) > Chlorella vulgaris (94.78 %) > Chroococcus sp. (91.16 %) > Cyclotella sp. (89.32 %) > Nitzschia sp. (88.38 %) > Nostoc sp. (84.33 %). The results of both hydrolysis and photolysis experiments revealed that the removal of DiBP had minimal impact, with respective removal efficiencies of only 0.89 % and 1.82 %. The adsorption efficiency of all six microalgae decreased significantly with increasing initial DiBP concentrations, while the biodegradation efficiency was elevated. Chlorella vulgaris and Chroococcus sp. demonstrated the highest adsorption and biodegradation efficiencies among the microalgae tested. Scenedesmus obliquus was chosen for the analysis of the degradation products of DiBP due to its exceptional ability to remove DiBP. The analysis yielded valuable results, identifying monoisobutyl phthalate (MiBP), phthalic acid (PA), and salicylic acid (SA) as the possible degradation products of DiBP. The possible degradation pathways mainly included dealkylation, the addition of hydroxyl groups, and decarboxylation. This study lays a theoretical foundation for the elimination of PAEs in the aquatic environment.

Mechanistic insights into the effects of diuron exposure on Alexandrium pacificum

Diuron (N-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-N,N‑dimethylurea, DCMU), a ureic herbicide, is extensively used in agriculture to boost crop productivity; however, its extensive application culminates in notable environmental pollution, especially in aquatic habitats. Therefore, the present study investigated the effect of diuron on the dinoflagellate Alexandrium pacificum, which is known to induce harmful algal blooms (HAB), and its potential to biodegrade DCMU. Following a four-day DCMU exposure, our results revealed that A. pacificum proficiently assimilated DCMU at concentrations of 0.05 mg/L and 0.1 mg/L in seawater, attaining a complete reduction (100 % efficiency) after 96 h for both concentrations. Moreover, evaluations of paralytic shellfish toxins content indicated that cells subjected to higher DCMU concentrations (0.1 mg/L) exhibited reductions of 73.4 %, 86.7 %, and 75 % in GTX1, GTX4, and NEO, respectively. Exposure to DCMU led to a notable decrease in A. pacificum's photosynthetic efficacy, accompanied by increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and suppressed cell growth, with a growth inhibition rate of 41.1 % at 72 h. Proteomic investigations pinpointed the diminished expression levels of specific proteins like SxtV and SxtW, linked to paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) synthesis, as well as key proteins associated with Photosystem II, namely PsbA, PsbD, PsbO, and PsbU. Conversely, proteins central to the cysteine biosynthesis pathways exhibited enhanced expression. In summary, our results preliminarily resolved the molecular mechanisms underlying the response of A. pacificum to DCMU and revealed that DCMU affected the synthesis of PSTs. Meanwhile, our data suggested that A. pacificum has great potential in scavenging DCMU.

Unraveling the contemporary use of microbial fuel cell in pesticide degradation and simultaneous electricity generation: a review

Pesticide is an inevitable substance used worldwide to kill pests, but their indiscriminate use has posed serious complications to health and the environment. Various physical, chemical, and biological methods are employed for pesticide treatment, but this paper deals with microbial fuel cell (MFC) as a futuristic technology for pesticide degradation with electricity production. In MFC, organic compounds are utilized as the carbon source for electricity production and the generation of electrons which can be replaced with pollutants such as dyes, antibiotics, and pesticides as carbon sources. However, MFC is been widely studied for a decade for electricity production, but its implementation in pesticide degradation is less known. We fill this void by depicting a real picture of the global pesticide scenario with an eagle eye view of the bioremediation techniques implemented for pesticide treatment with phytoremediation and rhizoremediation as effective techniques for efficient pesticide removal. The enormous literature survey has revealed that not many researchers have ventured into this new arena of MFC employed for pesticide degradation. Based on the Scopus database, an increase in annual trend from 2014 to 2023 is observed for MFC-implemented pesticide remediation. However, a novel MFC to date for effective remediation of pesticides with simultaneous electricity generation is discussed for the first time. Furthermore, the limitation of MFC technology and the implementation of MFC and rhizoremediation as a clubbed system which is the least applied can be seen as promising and futuristic approaches to enhance pesticide degradation by bacteria and electricity as a by-product.

Fate of pesticides in agricultural runoff treatment systems: Occurrence, impacts and technological progress

The levels of pesticides in air, water, and soil are gradually increasing due to its inappropriate management. In particular, agricultural runoff inflicts the damages on the ecosystem and human health at massive scale. Present study summarizes 70 studies in which investigations on removal or treatment of pesticides/insecticides/herbicides are reported. A bibliometric analysis was also done to understand the recent research trends through the analysis of 2218 publications. The specific objectives of this study are as follows: i) to inventorize the characteristics details of agriculture runoff and analyzing the occurrence and impacts of pesticides, ii) analyzing the role and interaction of pesticides in different environmental segments, iii) investigating the fate of pesticides in agriculture runoff treatment systems, iv) summarizing the experiences and findings of most commonly technology deployed for pesticides remediation in agriculture runoff including target pesticide(s), specifications, configuration of technological intervention. Among the reported technologies for pesticide treatment in agriculture runoff, constructed wetland was at the top followed by algal or photobioreactor. Among various advanced oxidation processes, photo Fenton method is mainly used for pesticides remediation such as triazine, methyl parathion, fenuron and diuron. Algal bioreactors are extensively used for a wide range of pesticides treatment including 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid, alachlor, diuron, chlorpyrifos, endosulfan, and imidacloprid; especially at lower hydraulic retention time of 2-6 h. This study highlights that hybrid approaches can offers potential opportunities for effective removal of pesticides in a more viable manner.

Are the issues involving acephate already resolved? A scientometric review

Acephate is a pesticide classified as moderately toxic, and its metabolite methamidophos is highly toxic for mammals and birds; even so, it is one of the most used insecticides in pest control for agricultural and domestic use. Acephate toxicity affects both target and non-target organisms and causes serious damage to the environment. There are several studies on different perspectives of acephate, such as monitoring, toxicity, and modeling. In this sense, this research aims to identify the structure of intellectual production on acephate and analyze the gaps and trends of scientific production on acephate through a scientometric analysis. The data was obtained from the Web of Science database, and after the refinement, 1.085 documents were used. A temporal pattern of the main research objectives is displayed. Most selected studies evaluated acephate efficiency, followed by toxicity and residue detection methods. The USA, China, India, Brazil, and Japan had the highest number of publications on acephate. The keywords most utilized were pesticides, toxicity, insecticide resistance, and residue. Research involving acephate requires greater attention from areas such as ecotoxicology, biochemistry, genetics, and biotechnology. There needed to be more discussions on chronic toxicity, genotoxicity, and cytotoxicity. Moreover, few studies about metabolic and biochemical pathways and genes related to acephate action and biodegradation were scarce.

Microbiology and Biochemistry of Pesticides Biodegradation

Pesticides are chemicals used in agriculture, forestry, and, to some extent, public health. As effective as they can be, due to the limited biodegradability and toxicity of some of them, they can also have negative environmental and health impacts. Pesticide biodegradation is important because it can help mitigate the negative effects of pesticides. Many types of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and algae, can degrade pesticides; microorganisms are able to bioremediate pesticides using diverse metabolic pathways where enzymatic degradation plays a crucial role in achieving chemical transformation of the pesticides. The growing concern about the environmental and health impacts of pesticides is pushing the industry of these products to develop more sustainable alternatives, such as high biodegradable chemicals. The degradative properties of microorganisms could be fully exploited using the advances in genetic engineering and biotechnology, paving the way for more effective bioremediation strategies, new technologies, and novel applications. The purpose of the current review is to discuss the microorganisms that have demonstrated their capacity to degrade pesticides and those categorized by the World Health Organization as important for the impact they may have on human health. A comprehensive list of microorganisms is presented, and some metabolic pathways and enzymes for pesticide degradation and the genetics behind this process are discussed. Due to the high number of microorganisms known to be capable of degrading pesticides and the low number of metabolic pathways that are fully described for this purpose, more research must be conducted in this field, and more enzymes and genes are yet to be discovered with the possibility of finding more efficient metabolic pathways for pesticide biodegradation.

Comparison of photocatalysis and photolysis of 2,2,4,4-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47): Operational parameters, kinetic studies, and data validation using three modern machine learning models

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are halogenated organic compounds that are among the major pollutants of water, and there is an urgent need for their removal. This work compared the application of two techniques, i.e., photocatalytic reaction (PCR) and photolysis (PL), for 2,2,4,4- tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) degradation. Although a limited degradation of BDE-47 was observed by photolysis (LED/N₂), photocatalytic oxidation by using TiO₂/LED/N₂ proved to be effective in the degradation of BDE-47. The use of a photocatalyst enhanced the extent of BDE-47 degradation by around 10% at optimum conditions in anaerobic systems. Experimental results were systematically validated through modeling with three new and powerful Machine Learning (ML) approaches, including Gradient Boosted Decision Tree (GBDT), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), and Symbolic Regression (SBR). Four statistical criteria (Coefficient of Determination (R²), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Average Relative Error (ARER), and Absolute Error (ABER)) were calculated for model validation. Among the applied models, the developed GBDT was the desirable model for predicting the remaining concentration (Ce) of BDE-47 for both processes. Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) results confirmed that BDE-47 mineralization required additional time than its degradation in both PCR and PL systems. The kinetic study demonstrated that BDE-47 degradation for both processes followed the pseudo-first-order form of the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) model. More importantly, the calculated electrical energy consumption of photolysis was shown to be ten percent higher than that for photocatalysis, possibly due to the higher irradiation time required in direct photolysis, which in turn increases electricity consumption. This study is useful in proposing a feasible and promising treatment process for the degradation of BDE-47.

Assessing the algal population dynamics using multiple machine learning approaches: Application to Macao reservoirs

The quality of reservoir water is important to the health and wellbeing of human and animals. Eutrophication is one of the most serious problems threatening the safety of reservoir water resource. Machine learning (ML) approaches are effective tools to understand and evaluate various environmental processes of concern, such as eutrophication. However, limited studies have compared the performances of different ML models to reveal algal dynamics using time-series data of redundant variables. In this study, the water quality data from two reservoirs in Macao were analyzed by adopting various ML approaches, including stepwise multiple linear regression (LR), principal component (PC)-LR, PC-artificial neuron network (ANN) and genetic algorithm (GA)-ANN-connective weight (CW) models. The influence of water quality parameters on algal growth and proliferation in two reservoirs was systematically investigated. The GA-ANN-CW model demonstrated the best performance in reducing the size of data and interpreting the algal population dynamics data, which displayed higher R-squared, lower mean absolute percentage error and lower root mean squared error values. Moreover, the variable contribution based on ML approaches suggest that water quality parameters, such as silica, phosphorus, nitrogen, and suspended solid have a direct impact on algal metabolisms in two reservoirs' water systems. This study can expand our capacity in adopting ML models in predicting algal population dynamics based on time-series data of redundant variables.

Global distribution of pesticides in freshwater resources and their remediation approaches

The role of pesticides in enhancing global agricultural production is magnificent. However, their unmanaged use threatens water resources and individual health. A significant pesticide concentration leaches to groundwater or reaches surface waters through runoff. Water contaminated with pesticides may cause acute or chronic toxicity to impacted populations and exert adverse environmental effects. It necessitates the monitoring and removing pesticides from water resources as prime global concerns. This work reviewed the global occurrences of pesticides in potable water and discussed the conventional and advanced technologies for the removal of pesticides. The concentration of pesticides highly varies in freshwater resources across the globe. The highest concentration of α-HCH (6.538 μg/L, at Yucatan, Mexico), lindane (6.08 μg/L at Chilka lake, Odisha, India), 2,4, DDT (0.90 μg/L, at Akkar, Lebanon), chlorpyrifos (9.1 μg/L, at Kota, Rajasthan, India), malathion (5.3 μg/L, at Kota, Rajasthan, India), atrazine (28.0 μg/L, at Venado Tuerto City, Argentina), endosulfan (0.78 μg/L, at Yavtmal, Maharashtra, India), parathion (4.17 μg/L, at Akkar, Lebanon), endrin (3.48 μg/L, at KwaZuln-Natl Province, South Africa) and imidacloprid (1.53 μg/L, at Son-La province, Vietnam) are reported. Pesticides can be significantly removed through physical, chemical, and biological treatment. Mycoremediation technology has the potential for up to 90% pesticide removal from water resources. Complete removal of the pesticides through a single biological treatment approach such as mycoremediation, phytoremediation, bioremediation, and microbial fuel cells is still a challenging task, however, the integration of two or more biological treatment approaches can attain complete removal of pesticides from water resources. Physical methods along with oxidation methods can be employed for complete removal of pesticides from drinking water.

Efficient removal of thiamethoxam by freshwater microalgae Scenedesmus sp. TXH: Removal mechanism, metabolic degradation and application

Neonicotinoids, as the most widely used pesticides in the world, help improve the production of crops. Meanwhile, it also brings potential threats to surrounding environments and other organisms because of its wide use and even abuse. In this study, Scenedesmus sp. TXH isolated from a wastewater treatment plant was used to remove the neonicotinoid pesticide thiamethoxam (THIA). The removal efficiency, degradation pathway, metabolite fate of THIA and physicochemical effects on microalgae cells were studied. Meanwhile, the feasibility of using microalgal technology to remove THIA from municipal wastewater was also explored. The results showed that 5-40 mg/L of THIA slightly promoted the growth of microalgae, while 60 mg/L THIA severely inhibited microalgal growth. It was observed that malondialdehyde content and superoxide dismutase activity in 60 mg/L THIA group increased significantly (p < 0.05) in the early stage of the experiment, indicating that THIA caused oxidative damage to microalgae. Scenedesmus sp. TXH showed high-efficient degradation ability and high resistance to THIA, with 100% removal of THIA at 5, 20 and 40 mg/L groups and 97.5% removal of THIA at 60 mg/L group on day 12. THIA was mainly removed by biodegradation, accounting for 78.18%, 93.50%, 96.81% and 91.35% under 5, 20, 40 and 60 mg/L on day 12, respectively. Six degradation products were identified, and four potential degradation pathways were proposed. In practical wastewater, the removal efficiency of total dissolved nitrogen, total dissolved phosphorus, ammonia nitrogen and THIA reached 85.68%, 90.00%, 98.43% and 100%, respectively, indicating that Scenedesmus sp. TXH was well adapted to the wastewater and effectively removed THIA and conventional pollutants.

Development of a bench-scale photobioreactor with a novel recirculation system for continuous cultivation of microalgae

Microalgae cultivation can be used to increase the sustainability of carbon emitting processes, converting the CO₂ from exhaust gases into fuels, food and chemicals. Many of the carbon emitting industries operate in a continuous manner, for periods that can span days or months, resulting in a continuous stream of gas emissions. Biogenic CO₂ from industrial microbiological processes is one example, since in many cases it becomes unsustainable to stop these processes on a daily or weekly basis. To correctly sequester these emissions, microalgae systems must be operated under continuous constant conditions, requiring photobioreactors (PBRs) that can act as chemostats for long periods of time. However, in order to optimize culture parameters or study metabolic responses, bench-scale setups are necessary. Currently there is a lack of studies and design alternatives using chemostat, since most works focus on batch assays or semi-continuous cultures. Therefore, this work focused on the development of a continuous bench-scale PBR, which combines a retention vessel, a photocollector and a degasser, with an innovative recirculation system, that allows it to operate as an autotrophic chemostat, to study carbon sequestration from a biogenic CO₂-rich constant air stream. To assess its applicability, the PBR was used to cultivate the green microalga Haematococcus pluvialis using as sole carbon source the CO₂ produced by a coupled heterotrophic bacterial chemostat. An air stream containing ≈0.35 vol% of CO_2, was fed to the system, and it was evaluated in terms of stability, carbon fixation and biomass productivity, for dilution rates ranging from 0.1 to 0.5 d^-1. The PBR was able to operate under chemostat conditions for more than 100 days, producing a stable culture that generated proportional responses to the stimuli it was subjected to, attaining a maximum biomass productivity of 183 mg/L/d with a carbon fixation efficiency of ≈39% at 0.3 d^-1. These results reinforce the effectiveness of the developed PBR system, making it suitable for laboratory-scale studies of continuous photoautotrophic microalgae cultivation.

Synergistic adsorption and oxidation of trivalent antimony from groundwater using biochar supported magnesium ferrite: Performances and mechanisms

Antimony (Sb) pollution is considered an environmental problem, since Sb is toxic and carcinogenic to humans. Here, a novel biochar supported magnesium ferrite (BC@MF) was adopted for Sb(III) removal from groundwater. The maximum adsorption capacity was 77.44 mg g^-1. Together with characterization, batch experiments, kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamic analyses suggested that inner-sphere complexation, H-bonding, and electrostatic interactions were the primary mechanisms. C-C/CC, C-O, and O-CO groups and Fe/Mg oxides might have acted as adsorption sites. The adsorbed Sb(III) was oxidized to Sb(V). The generation of reactive oxygen species, iron redox reaction, and oxidizing functional groups all contributed to Sb(III) oxidation. Furthermore, the fixed-bed column system demonstrated a satisfactory Sb removal performance; BC@MF could treat ∼6060 BV of simulated Sb-polluted groundwater. This research provides a promising approach to sufficiently remove Sb(III) from contaminated groundwater, providing new insights for the development of innovative strategies for heavy metal removal.

Ferroptosis is the key cellular process mediating Bisphenol A responses in Chlamydomonas and a promising target for enhancing microalgae-based bioremediation

Microplastics are one of the major pollutants in aquatic environments. Among their components, Bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the most abundant and dangerous, leading to endocrine disorders deriving even in different types of cancer in mammals. However, despite this evidence, the xenobiotic effects of BPA over plantae and microalgae still need to be better understood at the molecular level. To fill this gap, we characterized the physiological and proteomic response of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii during long-term BPA exposure by analyzing physiological and biochemical parameters combined with proteomics. BPA imbalanced iron and redox homeostasis, disrupting cell function and triggering ferroptosis. Intriguingly, this microalgae defense against this pollutant is recovering at both molecular and physiological levels while starch accumulation at 72 h of BPA exposure. In this work, we addressed the molecular mechanisms involved in BPA exposure, demonstrating for the first time the induction of ferroptosis in a eukaryotic alga and how ROS detoxification mechanisms and other specific proteomic rearrangements reverted this situation. These results are of great significance not only for understanding the BPA toxicology or exploring the molecular mechanisms of ferroptosis in microalgae but also for defining novel target genes for microplastic bioremediation efficient strain development.

Acute exposure of Isopyrazam damages the developed cardiovascular system of zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Isopyrazam (IPZ) is one of the broad-spectrum succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor fungicides (SDHIs). Although the potential bio-toxicity of SDHIs has been reported hourly, the specific effects focused on the cardiovascular system have remained unclear and piecemeal. Thus, we chose IPZ as a representative to observe the cardiovascular toxicity of SDHIs in zebrafish. Two types of transgenic zebrafish, Tg (cmlc2:GFP) and Tg (flk1:GFP) were used in this study. Healthy embryos at 6 hpf were exposed to IPZ solutions. The statistical data including survival rate, hatching rate, malformed rate, and morphological and functional parameters of the cardiovascular system at 48 hpf and 72 hpf demonstrated that IPZ could cause abnormalities and cardiovascular defects such as spinal curvature, dysmotility, pericardial edema, pericardial hemorrhage, and slowed heart rate, etc. At the same time, the activity of enzymes related to oxidative stress was altered with IPZ. Our results revealed that IPZ-induced cardiovascular toxicity and oxidative stress might be one of the underlying toxic mechanisms.

Removal of fenamiphos, imidacloprid, and oxamyl pesticides from water by microalgal Nannochloropsis oculata biomass and their determination by validated HPLC method

The present study assessed the removal of fenamiphos, imidacloprid, and oxamyl pesticides from water using algal Nannochloropsis oculata biomass. Several factors, such as algal biomass concentration, incubation time, and pesticide concentration, were studied for their impact on pesticide removal. Analysis and quantification of pesticides by rapid HPLC have been developed and validated. The optimum conditions were obtained at 15 min, 50 mg/L of pesticide concentration, and 4,500 mg/L of the algal biomass with 92.24% and 90.43% removal for fenamiphos and imidacloprid, respectively. While optimum parameters of 10 min incubation, 250 mg/L of pesticide concentration, and 2,750 mg/L of the algal biomass exhibited 67.34% removal for oxamyl. N. oculata, marine microalgae, successively removed different concentrations of the tested pesticides from water, and the algal biomass showed a potential reduction of pesticides in polluted water samples.

Microalgal-induced remediation of wastewaters loaded with organic and inorganic pollutants: An overview

The recent surge in industrialization has intensified the accumulation of various types of organic and inorganic pollutants due to the illegal dumping of partially and/or untreated wastewater effluents in the environment. The pollutants emitted by several industries pose serious risk to the environment, animals and human beings. Management and diminution of these hazardous organic pollutants have become an incipient research interest. Traditional physiochemical methods are energy intensive and produce secondary pollutants. So, bioremediation via microalgae has appeared to be an eco-friendly and sustainable technique to curb the adverse effects of organic and inorganic contaminants because microalgae can degrade complex organic compounds and convert them into simpler and non-toxic substances without the release of secondary pollutants. Even some of the organic pollutants can be exploited by microalgae as a source of carbon in mixotrophic cultivation. Literature survey has revealed that use of the latest modification techniques for microalgae such as immobilization (on alginate, carrageena and agar), pigment-extraction, and pretreatment (with acids) have enhaced their bioremedial potential. Moreover, microalgal components i.e., biopolymers and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) can potentially be exploited in the biosorption of pollutants. Though bioremediation of wastewaters by microalgae is quite well-studied realm but some aspects like structural and functional responses of microalgae toward pollutant derivatives/by-products (formed during biodegradation), use of genetic engineering to improve the tolerance of microalgae against higher concentrations of polluatans, and harvesting cost reduction, and monitoring of parameters at large-scale still need more focus. This review discusses the accumulation of different types of pollutants into the environment through various sources and the mechanisms used by microalgae to degrade commonly occurring organic and inorganic pollutants.

Dyeing wastewater treatment in horizontal-vertical constructed wetland using organic waste media

A hybrid constructed wetland (CW) system with horizontal and vertical flow combination was evaluated for treating carbon-deficient synthetic dyeing wastewater containing 100 mg/L Reactive Yellow 145 dye. Organic waste products such as cow manure and wood chips were added as media in horizontal CW, and gravel as vertical CW media. Horizontal and vertical CWs were planted with Typha angustifolia. Horizontal CW was operated in continuous mode at hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 3 d and vertical CW in batch mode at 1 d HRT. The results suggested the potential application of a cost-effective horizontal-vertical hybrid CW to remove azo dyes from low-carbon dyeing wastewater. In horizontal CW, organic media was used as the carbon source for microbial dye degradation, resulting in 90% colour removal in the absence of available carbon in dyeing wastewater. Proteobacteria, Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes played a dominant role in dye degradation in horizontal CW. Vertical CW removed dye degradation organics, 69% ammonium-nitrogen and 39% organic-nitrogen. Phytotoxicity assays indicated toxicity reduction along the CW treatment path.

Migration behavior and dietary exposure risk assessment of pesticides residues in honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica Thunb.) based on modified QuEChERS method coupled with tandem mass spectrometry

The honeysuckle was widely appreciated as tea beverage owing to the biological activities and the unique aroma and flavor. It is in urgent requirement to explore the migration behavior and dietary exposure as the pesticide residues would bring about potential risks through honeysuckle intake. The optimized QuEChERS procedure coupled with the HPLC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS methods were employed to determine 93 pesticide residues of seven classifications including carbamates, pyrethroid, triazoles, neonicotinoids, organophosphorus, organochlorine, and others for 93 honeysuckle samples from four primary production bases. As a result, 86.02% of the samples were contaminated by at least one pesticide. Unexpectedly, the banned pesticide of carbofuran was also identified. The migration behavior of metolcarb was the highest, whereas thiabendazole contributed less risk to the infusion with relative lower transfer rate. Both the chronic and acute exposure yielded low risk for human health with five high risk pesticides of dichlorvos, cyhalothrin, carbofuran, ethomyl, and pyridaben. Besides, this study provides foundation of dietary exposure risk assessment for honeysuckle and other likewise products.

Utilization of dark fermentation effluent for algal cultivation in a modified airlift photobioreactor for biomass and biocrude production

Developing an efficient photobioreactor (PBR) and reducing freshwater dependence are among the significant challenges for generating 3rd generation biomass feedstock. Addressing these, the present study focused on developing a modified airlift (MoAL) PBR. Its performance was further evaluated and compared with the traditional airlift PBR by cultivating microalgae in dark fermentation spent wash. Lower mixing time and higher interfacial mass transfer coefficient was observed in the MoAL PBR having a perforated draft tube. Experimentally, the MoAL exhibited the maximum biomass concentration of 3.18 g L^-1, which was 30% higher than that of the conventional airlift PBR. The semi-continuous operation of the MoAL (with water recycling) achieved the maximum biomass productivity of 0.83 g L^-1 d^-1, two folds superior to that of batch culture. The comprehensive biomass characterization (proximate, ultimate, and thermochemical) further confirmed its potential for bioenergy application. Considering that, hydrothermal liquefaction of the biomass resulted in a maximum biocrude yield of 31% w/w with a higher heating value (HHV) of 36.6 MJ kg^-1. In addition, the biocrude comprised 66.6% w/w lighter fraction (<343 °C), including 21.5% w/w of heavy naphtha, 20.5% w/w of kerosene, and 24.6% w/w of diesel. The results can help develop sustainable technology for simultaneous wastewater remediation and biocrude production.

Current research trends on emerging contaminants pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs): A comprehensive review

Pharmaceutical and personnel care products (PPCPs) from wastewater are a potential hazard to the human health and wildlife, and their occurrence in wastewater has caught the concern of researchers recently. To deal with PPCPs, various treatment technologies have been evolved such as physical, biological, and chemical methods. Nevertheless, modern and efficient techniques such as advance oxidation processes (AOPs) demand expensive chemicals and energy, which ultimately leads to a high treatment cost. Therefore, integration of chemical techniques with biological processes has been recently suggested to decrease the expenses. Furthermore, combining ozonation with activated carbon (AC) can significantly enhance the removal efficiency. There are some other emerging technologies of lower operational cost like photo-Fenton method and solar radiation-based methods as well as constructed wetland, which are promising. However, feasibility and practicality in pilot-scale have not been estimated for most of these advanced treatment technologies. In this context, the present review work explores the treatment of emerging PPCPs in wastewater, via available conventional, non-conventional, and integrated technologies. Furthermore, this work focused on the state-of-art technologies via an extensive literature search, highlights the limitations and challenges of the prevailing commercial technologies. Finally, this work provides a brief discussion and offers future research directions on technologies needed for treatment of wastewater containing PPCPs, accompanied by techno-economic feasibility assessment.

Application of regression and artificial neural network analysis of Red-Green-Blue image components in prediction of chlorophyll content in microalgae

This study presented a novel methodology to predict microalgae chlorophyll content from colour models using linear regression and artificial neural network. The analysis was performed using SPSS software. Type of extractant solvents and image indexes were used as the input data for the artificial neural network calculation. The findings revealed that the regression model was highly significant, with high R² of 0.58 and RSME of 3.16, making it a useful tool for predicting the chlorophyll concentration. Simultaneously, artificial neural network model with R² of 0.66 and low RMSE of 2.36 proved to be more accurate than regression model. The model which fitted to the experimental data indicated that acetone was a suitable extraction solvent. In comparison to the cyan-magenta-yellow-black model in image analysis, the red-greenblue model offered a better correlation. In short, the estimation of chlorophyll concentration using prediction models are rapid, more efficient, and less expensive.

Microalgae identification: Future of image processing and digital algorithm

The identification of microalgae species is an important tool in scientific research and commercial application to prevent harmful algae blooms (HABs) and recognizing potential microalgae strains for the bioaccumulation of valuable bioactive ingredients. The aim of this study is to incorporate rapid, high-accuracy, reliable, low-cost, simple, and state-of-the-art identification methods. Thus, increasing the possibility for the development of potential recognition applications, that could identify toxic-producing and valuable microalgae strains. Recently, deep learning (DL) has brought the study of microalgae species identification to a much higher depth of efficiency and accuracy. In doing so, this review paper emphasizes the significance of microalgae identification, and various forms of machine learning algorithms for image classification, followed by image pre-processing techniques, feature extraction, and selection for further classification accuracy. Future prospects over the challenges and improvements of potential DL classification model development, application in microalgae recognition, and image capturing technologies are discussed accordingly.

Waste to catalyst: Role of agricultural waste in water and wastewater treatment

Presently, owing to the rapid development of industrialization and urbanization activities, a huge quantity of wastewater is generated that contain toxic chemical and heavy metals, imposing higher environmental jeopardies and affecting the life of living well-being and the economy of the counties, if not treated appropriately. Subsequently, the advancement in sustainable cost-effective wastewater treatment technology has attracted more attention from policymakers, legislators, and scientific communities. Therefore, the current review intends to highlight the recent development and applications of biochars and/or green nanoparticles (NPs) produced from agricultural waste via green routes in removing the refractory pollutants from water and wastewater. This review also highlights the contemporary application and mechanism of biochar-supported advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for the removal of organic pollutants in water and wastewater. Although, the fabrication and application of agriculture waste-derived biochar and NPs are considered a greener approach, nevertheless, before scaling up production and application, its toxicological and life-cycle challenges must be taken into account. Furthermore, future efforts should be carried out towards process engineering to enhance the performance of green catalysts to improve the economy of the process.

Effects of operational parameters on the performance of unialgal Oedogonium sp. filamentous algae nutrient scrubbers under controlled environmental conditions

Filamentous algae nutrient scrubber (FANS) operating parameters can strongly influence algal biomass productivity and nutrient removal. However, few studies to date have investigated the effects of FANS operating parameters such as initial standing crop, harvesting frequency and influent flow rate on biomass productivity and nutrient removal performance, especially for FANS that cultivate a single species of algae. Therefore, the overall aim of this study was to investigate how operating parameters affect the biomass productivity and nutrient removal performance of Oedogonium sp. - a promising species for unialgal FANS. The initial standing crop had a significant effect on biomass productivity, with productivities being highest (8.6 ± 0.5 g DW biomass m^-2day^-1) when the initial standing crop was 60-70 g DW m^-2. However, the daily nutrient removal rate was highest (0.47 ± 0.06 g N m^-2 day^-1and 1.24 ± 0.13 g P m^-2 day^-1) at the highest initial standing crop (100-110 DW m^-2). Biomass productivity was highest with a three-day growth period, regardless of size of the initial standing crop. Therefore, a four-day harvesting interval was selected as the optimal harvesting regime to promote exponential growth and high biomass production. Influent flow rate had a significant effect on biomass productivity, which was highest (9.3 ± 1.7 g DW m^-2 day^-1) for the 1 L min^-1 flow rate. This flow rate also gave the highest instantaneous nutrient removal rate (0.05 ± 0.02 g N m^-3 and 0.14 ± 0.05 g P m^-3). Current results suggest that an optimum initial standing crop of 70-80 g DW m^-2, harvesting frequency of four days and influent flow rate of 1 L min^-1 (16.7 L min^-1 m^-1 width) were optimal for Oedogonium sp. cultivated on FANS to maximize their biomass production and nutrient removal under controlled laboratory conditions. These results contribute to understanding the impacts of operating parameters on optimizing unialgal Oedogonium sp. FANS biomass production and nutrient removal performance.

Advancement in algal bioremediation for organic, inorganic, and emerging pollutants

Rapidly changing bioremediation prospects are key drive to develop sustainable options that can offer extra benefits rather than only environmental remediation. Algal remediating is gaining utmost attention due to its mesmerising sustainable features, removing odour and toxicity, co-remediating numerous common and emerging inorganic and organic pollutants from gaseous and aqueous environments, and yielding biomass for a range of valuable products refining. Moreover, it also improves carbon footprint via carbon-capturing offers a better option than any other non-algal process for several high CO₂-emitting industries. Bio-uptake, bioadsorption, photodegradation, and biodegradation are the main mechanisms to remediate a range of common and emerging pollutants by various algae species. Bioadsorption was a dominant remediation mechanism among others implicating surface properties of pollutants and algal cell walls. Photodegradable pollutants were photodegraded by microalgae by adsorbing photons on the surface and intracellularly via stepwise photodissociation and breakdown. Biodegradation involves the transportation of selective pollutants intracellularly, and enzymes help to convert them into simpler non-toxic forms. Robust models are from the green microalgae group and are dominated by Chlorella species. This article compiles the advancements in microalgae-assisted pollutants remediation and value-addition under sustainable biorefinery prospects. Moreover, filling the knowledge gaps, and recommendations for developing an effective platform for emerging pollutants remediation and realization of commercial-scale algal bioremediation.

Effective Usage of Biochar and Microorganisms for the Removal of Heavy Metal Ions and Pesticides

The bioremediation of heavy metal ions and pesticides is both cost-effective and environmentally friendly. Microbial remediation is considered superior to conventional abiotic remediation processes, due to its cost-effectiveness, decrement of biological and chemical sludge, selectivity toward specific metal ions, and high removal efficiency in dilute effluents. Immobilization technology using biochar as a carrier is one important approach for advancing microbial remediation. This article provides an overview of biochar-based materials, including their design and production strategies, physicochemical properties, and applications as adsorbents and support for microorganisms. Microorganisms that can cope with the various heavy metal ions and/or pesticides that enter the environment are also outlined in this review. Pesticide and heavy metal bioremediation can be influenced by microbial activity, pollutant bioavailability, and environmental factors, such as pH and temperature. Furthermore, by elucidating the interaction mechanisms, this paper summarizes the microbe-mediated remediation of heavy metals and pesticides. In this review, we also compile and discuss those works focusing on the study of various bioremediation strategies utilizing biochar and microorganisms and how the immobilized bacteria on biochar contribute to the improvement of bioremediation strategies. There is also a summary of the sources and harmful effects of pesticides and heavy metals. Finally, based on the research described above, this study outlines the future scope of this field.

Biotechnological advancements towards water, food and medical healthcare: A review

The global health status is highly affected by the growing pace of urbanization, new lifestyles, climate changes, and resource exploitation. Modern technologies pave a promising way to deal with severe concerns toward sustainable development. Herein, we provided a comprehensive review of some popular biotechnological advancements regarding the progress achieved in water, food, and medicine, as the most substantial fields related to public health. The emergence of novel organic/inorganic materials has brought about significant improvement in conventional water treatment techniques, anti-fouling approaches, anti-microbial agents, food processing, biosensors, drug delivery systems, and implants. Particularly, a growing interest has been devoted to nanomaterials and their application for developing novel structures or improving the characteristics of standard components. Also, bioinspired materials have been widely used to improve the performance, efficiency, accuracy, stability, safety, and cost-effectiveness of traditional systems. On the other side, the fabrication of innovative devices for precisely monitoring and managing various ecosystem and human health issues is of great importance. Above all, exceptional advancements in designing ion-selective electrodes (ISEs), microelectromechanical systems (MEMs), and implantable medical devices have altered the future landscape of environmental and biomedical research. This review paper aimed to shed light on the wide-ranging materials and devices that have been developed for health applications and mainly focused on the impact of nanotechnology in this field.

Pesticide contamination in agro-ecosystems: toxicity, impacts, and bio-based management strategies

Continuous rise in application of pesticides in the agro-ecosystems in order to ensure food supply to the ever-growing population is of greater concern to the human health and the environment. Once entered into the agro-ecosystem, the fate and transport of pesticides is determined largely by the nature of pesticides and the soil attributes, in addition to the soil-inhabiting microbes, fauna, and flora. Changes in the soil microbiological actions, soil properties, and enzymatic activities resulting from pesticide applications are the important factors substantially affecting the soil productivity. Disturbances in the microbial community composition may lead to the considerable perturbations in cycling of major nutrients, metals, and subsequent uptake by plants. Indiscriminate applications are linked with the accumulation of pesticides in plant-based foods, feeds, and animal products. Furthermore, rapid increase in the application of pesticides having long half-life has also been reported to contaminate the nearby aquatic environments and accumulation in the plants, animals, and microbes surviving there. To circumvent the negative consequences of pesticide application, multitude of techniques falling in physical, chemical, and biological categories are presented by different investigators. In the present study, important findings pertaining to the pesticide contamination in cultivated agricultural soils; toxicity on soil microbes, plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates; effects on soil characteristics; and alleviation of toxicity by bio-based management approaches have been thoroughly reviewed. With the help of bibliometric analysis, thematic evolution and research trends on the bioremediation of pesticides in the agro-ecosystems have also been highlighted.

Energy metabolism and intracellular pH regulation reveal different physiological acclimation mechanisms of Chlorella strains to high concentrations of CO2

The intolerance of high CO₂ in the exhaust gas is the "bottleneck" limiting the wide application of microalgae for CO₂ biosequestration. Around this topic, we selected high-CO₂-tolerant (LAMB 33 and 31) and nontolerant (LAMB 122) Chlorella strains to study their different energy metabolisms and cytoplasmic pH regulations in response to high CO₂. Under 40 % CO₂, LAMB 33 and 31 both showed elevated ATP synthesis, accelerated ATP consumption and fast cytoplasmic pH regulation while exhibiting different acclimating strategies therein: chloroplast acclimations were reflected by high chlorophyll contents in 33 but photosystem transitions in 31; faster mitochondrial acclimations occurred in 33 than in 31; cellular organic carbon mainly flowed to monosaccharide synthesis for 33 but to monosaccharide and protein synthesis for 31; and cytoplasmic pH regulation was attributed to V-ATPase in 31 but not in 33. All the above metabolic processes gradually collapsed in 122, leading to growth inhibition. Our study identified different metabolic acclimation strategies among Chlorella strains to high CO₂ and provided new traits for breeding microalgae for CO₂ biosequestration.

Biochar application for greenhouse gas mitigation, contaminants immobilization and soil fertility enhancement: A state-of-the-art review

Rising global temperature, pollution load, and energy crises are serious problems, recently facing the world. Scientists around the world are ambitious to find eco-friendly and cost-effective routes for resolving these problems. Biochar has emerged as an agent for environmental remediation and has proven to be the effective sorbent to inorganic and organic pollutants in water and soil. Endowed with unique attributes such as porous structure, larger specific surface area (SSA), abundant surface functional groups, better cation exchange capacity (CEC), strong adsorption capacity, high environmental stability, embedded minerals, and micronutrients, biochar is presented as a promising material for environmental management, reduction in greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions, soil management, and soil fertility enhancement. Therefore, the current review covers the influence of key factors (pyrolysis temperature, retention time, gas flow rate, and reactor design) on the production yield and property of biochar. Furthermore, this review emphasizes the diverse application of biochar such as waste management, construction material, adsorptive removal of petroleum and oil from aqueous media, immobilization of contaminants, carbon sequestration, and their role in climate change mitigation, soil conditioner, along with opportunities and challenges. Finally, this review discusses the evaluation of biochar standardization by different international agencies and their economic perspective.

Experiments on Pilot-Scale Constructed Floating Wetlands Efficiency in Removing Agrochemicals

The efficiency of constructed floating wetlands (CFWs) in their ability to remove agrochemicals (nutrients and pesticides) is here investigated in a series of pilot-scale systems. Four experimental CFWs were designed and constructed; three of them were planted with the aquatic plant species Lemna minor, Azolla pinnata and Eichhornia crassipes. The fourth did not contain any plants and was used as the control. The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficiency of CFW containing aquatic macrophytes in the reduction of pesticides and nutrients, under field conditions. The CFWs operated continuously from May 2021 to September 2021, and their removal efficiencies of nitrogen and phosphorus ions, and five commonly used pesticides were examined. The CFW systems were fed daily with agricultural wastewater which was prepared by mixing a fertilizer and predetermined doses of pesticides. The hydraulic residence time was kept at 14 days. Samples were collected on a weekly basis from both the influent and the effluent of each experimental tank, and were subsequently analyzed in the laboratory. HPLC-DAD and Ion Chromatography were implemented for sample analysis following a very simple sample preparation. Reductions for nutrient ranged from no reduction to 100% removal, whereas for pesticides these varied from no reduction to 98.8% removal, indicating that these systems can be used as efficient and low-cost pollution control technologies for agrochemical wastewater treatment. Significant reduction for certain pesticides was also observed in the algae control tank, thus, proving the efficiency of algae in organic pollution reduction, and recognizing the limitations of aquatic plant use in decontamination.

Latest eco-friendly approaches for pesticides decontamination using microorganisms and consortia microalgae: A comprehensive insights, challenges, and perspectives

Pesticides are chemical compounds that are considered toxic to many organisms, including humans. Their elimination from polluted sites attracted the attention of Scientifics in the last decade; Among the various methods used to decontaminate pesticides from the environment, the microbial-algae consortium is a promising bioremediation technology, which implies several advantages as an eco-friendly process that generate biomass produced that could be valorized in the form of bioenergy, In this review, we will discuss the latest eco-friendly approaches using microorganisms to remediate sites contaminated by pesticides, and shows the ability of microbial, algae and their consortium to remove pesticides and the role of different enzymes in degradation processes.

Microalgae-based wastewater treatment - Microalgae-bacteria consortia, multi-omics approaches and algal stress response

Sustainable environmental management is one of the important aspects of sustainable development goals. Increasing amounts of wastewaters (WW) from exponential economic growth is a major challenge, and conventional treatment methods entail a huge carbon footprint in terms of energy use and GHG emissions. Microalgae-based WW treatment is a potential candidate for sustainable WW treatment. The nutrients which are otherwise unutilized in the conventional processes are recovered in the beneficial microalgal biomass. This review presents comprehensive information regarding the potential of microalgae as sustainable bioremediation agents. Microalgae-bacterial consortia play a critical role in synergistic nutrient removal, supported by the complex nutritional and metabolite exchange between microalgae and the associated bacteria. Design of effective microalgae-bacteria consortia either by screening or by recent technologies such as synthetic biology approaches are highly required for efficient WW treatment. Furthermore, this review discusses the crucial research gap in microalgal WW treatment - the application of a multi-omics platform for understanding microalgal response towards WW conditions and the design of effective microalgal or microalgae-bacteria consortia based on genetic information. While metagenomics helps in the identification and monitoring of the microbial community throughout the treatment process, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics aid in studying the algal cellular response towards the nutrients and pollutants in WW. It has been established that the integration of microalgal processes into conventional WW treatment systems is feasible. In this direction, future research directions for microalgal WW treatment emphasize the need for identifying the niche in WW treatment, while highlighting the pilot sale plants in existence. Microalgae-based WW treatment could be a potential phase in the waste hierarchy of circular economy and sustainability, considering WWs are a rich secondary source of finite resources such as nitrogen and phosphorus.

Daphnia as a Sentinel Species for Environmental Health Protection: A Perspective on Biomonitoring and Bioremediation of Chemical Pollution

Despite available technology and the knowledge that chemical pollution damages human and ecosystem health, chemical pollution remains rampant, ineffectively monitored, rarely prevented, and only occasionally mitigated. We present a framework that helps address current major challenges in the monitoring and assessment of chemical pollution by broadening the use of the sentinel species Daphnia as a diagnostic agent of water pollution. And where prevention has failed, we propose the application of Daphnia as a bioremediation agent to help reduce hazards from chemical mixtures in the environment. By applying "omics" technologies to Daphnia exposed to real-world ambient chemical mixtures, we show improvements at detecting bioactive components of chemical mixtures, determining the potential effects of untested chemicals within mixtures, and identifying targets of toxicity. We also show that using Daphnia strains that naturally adapted to chemical pollution as removal agents of ambient chemical mixtures can sustainably improve environmental health protection. Expanding the use of Daphnia beyond its current applications in regulatory toxicology has the potential to improve both the assessment and the remediation of environmental pollution.

Mobilization of contaminants: Potential for soil remediation and unintended consequences

Land treatment has become an essential waste management practice. Therefore, soil becomes a major source of contaminants including organic chemicals and potentially toxic elements (PTEs) which enter the food chain, primarily through leaching to potable water sources, plant uptake, and animal transfer. A range of soil amendments are used to manage the mobility of contaminants and subsequently their bioavailability. Various soil amendments, like desorbing agents, surfactants, and chelating agents, have been applied to increase contaminant mobility and bioavailability. These mobilizing agents are applied to increase the contaminant removal though phytoremediation, bioremediation, and soil washing. However, possible leaching of the mobilized pollutants during soil washing is a major limitation, particularly when there is no active plant uptake. This leads to groundwater contamination and toxicity to plants and soil biota. In this context, the present review provides an overview on various soil amendments used to enhance the bioavailability and mobility of organic and inorganic contaminants, thereby facilitating increased risk when soil is remediated in polluted areas. The unintended consequences of the mobilization methods, when used to remediate polluted sites, are discussed in relation to the leaching of mobilized contaminants when active plant growth is absent. The toxicity of targeted and non-targeted contaminants to microbial communities and higher plants is also discussed. Finally, this review work summarizes the existing research gaps in various contaminant mobilization approaches, and prospects for future research.

Natural Cotton Cellulose-Supported TiO2 Quantum Dots for the Highly Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of Dyes

The artificial photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants has emerged as a promising approach to purifying the water environment. The core issue of this ongoing research is to construct efficient but easily recyclable photocatalysts without quadratic harm. Here, we report an eco-friendly photocatalyst with in situ generated TiO₂ quantum dots (TQDs) on natural cotton cellulose (CC) by a simple one-step hydrothermal method. The porous fine structure and abundant hydroxyl groups control the shape growth and improve the stability of nanoparticles, making natural CC suitable for TQDs. The TQDs/CC photocatalyst was synthesized without the chemical modification of the TQDs. FE-SEM and TEM results showed that 5-6 nm TQDs are uniformly decorated on the CC surface. The long-term stability in photocatalytic activity and structure of more than ten cycles directly demonstrates the stability of CC on TQDs. With larger CC sizes, TQDs are easier to recycle. The TQDs/CC photocatalysts show impressive potential in the photocatalytic degradation of anionic methyl orange (MO) dyes and cationic rhodamine B (RhB) dyes.
