Adsorptive removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions: Progress of adsorbents development and their effectiveness

Increased levels of heavy metals (HMs) in aquatic environments poses serious health and ecological concerns. Hence, several approaches have been proposed to eliminate/reduce the levels of HMs before the discharge/reuse of HMs-contaminated waters. Adsorption is one of the most attractive processes for water decontamination; however, the efficiency of this process greatly depends on the choice of adsorbent. Therefore, the key aim of this article is to review the progress in the development and application of different classes of conventional and emerging adsorbents for the abatement of HMs from contaminated waters. Adsorbents that are based on activated carbon, natural materials, microbial, clay minerals, layered double hydroxides (LDHs), nano-zerovalent iron (nZVI), graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), metal organic frameworks (MOFs), and zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are critically reviewed, with more emphasis on the last four adsorbents and their nanocomposites since they have the potential to significantly boost the HMs removal efficiency from contaminated waters. Furthermore, the optimal process conditions to achieve efficient performance are discussed. Additionally, adsorption isotherm, kinetics, thermodynamics, mechanisms, and effects of varying adsorption process parameters have been introduced. Moreover, heavy metal removal driven by other processes such as oxidation, reduction, and precipitation that might concurrently occur in parallel with adsorption have been reviewed. The application of adsorption for the treatment of real wastewater has been also reviewed. Finally, challenges, limitations and potential areas for improvements in the adsorptive removal of HMs from contaminated waters are identified and discussed. Thus, this article serves as a comprehensive reference for the recent developments in the field of adsorptive removal of heavy metals from wastewater. The proposed future research work at the end of this review could help in addressing some of the key limitations facing this technology, and create a platform for boosting the efficiency of the adsorptive removal of heavy metals.

Core-shell design of UiO66-Fe3O4 configured with EDTA-assisted washing for rapid adsorption and simple recovery of heavy metal pollutants from soil

The coupling of washing with adsorption process can be adopted for the treatment of soils contaminated with heavy metals pollution. However, the complex environment of soil and the competitive behavior of leaching chemicals considerably restrain adsorption capacity of adsorbent material during washing process, which demands a higher resistance of the adsorbents to interference. In this study, we synthesized strongly magnetic, high specific surface area (573.49 m2/g) UiO66 composites (i.e., UiO66-Fe3O4) using hydrothermal process. The UiO66-Fe3O4 was applied as an adsorbent during the ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA)-assisted washing process of contaminated soil. The incorporation of UiO66-Fe3O4 results in rapid heavy metal removal and recovery from the soil under low concentrations of washing agent (0.001 mol/L) with reduced residual heavy metal mobility of soil after remediation. Furthermore, UiO66-Fe3O4 can quickly recollect by an external magnet, which offers a simple and inexpensive recovery method for heavy metals from contaminated soil. Overall, UiO66-Fe3O4 configuration with EDTA-assisted washing process showed opportunities for heavy metals contaminated sites.

Heavy metal sequestration from wastewater by metal-organic frameworks: a state-of-the-art review of recent progress

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as highly promising adsorbents for removing heavy metals from wastewater due to their tunable structures, high surface areas, and exceptional adsorption capacities. This review meticulously examines and summarizes recent advancements in producing and utilizing MOF-based adsorbents for sequestering heavy metal ions from water. It begins by outlining and contrasting commonly employed methods for synthesizing MOFs, such as solvothermal, microwave, electrochemical, ultrasonic, and mechanochemical. Rather than delving into the specifics of adsorption process parameters, the focus shifts to analyzing the adsorption capabilities and underlying mechanisms against critical metal(loid) ions like chromium, arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury under various environmental conditions. Additionally, this article discusses strategies to optimize MOF performance, scale-up production, and address environmental implications. The comprehensive review aims to enhance the understanding of MOF-based adsorption for heavy metal remediation and stimulate further research in this critical field. In brief, this review article presents a comprehensive overview of the contemporary information on MOFs as an effective adsorbent and the challenges being faced by these adsorbents for heavy metal mitigation (including stability, cost, environmental issues, and optimization), targeting to develop a vital reference for future MOF research.

Facile synthesis of δ-MnO2 biotemplated by waste tobacco stem-silks for enhanced removal of Sb(III)

The elimination of antimony pollution has attracted increasing concerns because of its high toxicity to human health and the natural environment. In this work, biomimetic δ-MnO2 was synthesized by using waste tobacco stem-silks as biotemplate (Bio-δ-MnO2) and used in the capture of Sb(III)from aqueous solution. The tobacco stem-silks not only provided unique wrinkled morphologies but also contained carbon element self-doped into the resulting samples. The maximum Sb(III) adsorption capacity reached 763.4 mg∙g -1, which is 2.06 times higher than δ-MnO2 without template (370.0 mg∙g -1), 4.53 times than tobacco stem-silks carbon (168.5 mg∙g -1), and 10.39 times than commercial MnO2 (73.5 mg∙g -1), respectively. The isotherm and kinetic studies indicated that the adsorption behavior was consistent with the Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. As far as we are aware, the adsorption capacity of Bio-δ-MnO2 is much higher than that of most Sb(III) adsorbents. FT-IR, XPS, SEM, XRD, and Zeta potential analyses showed that the main mechanism for the adsorption of Sb(III) by Bio-δ-MnO2 includes electrostatic attraction, surface complexation, and redox. Overall, this study provides a new sustainable way to convert agricultural wastes to more valuable products such as biomimetic adsorbent for Sb(III) removal in addition to conventional activated carbon and biochar.

Efficient removal of heavy metal and antibiotics from wastewater by phosphate-modified hydrochar

The preparation, characterization and adsorption performance of the phosphate-modified hydrochar (P-hydrochar) for Pb(II) and ciprofloxacin removal are investigated. Pb(II) and ciprofloxacin adsorption behavior fit well with the Hill model with the adsorption capacity of 119.61 and 98.38 mg/g, respectively. Pb(II) and ciprofloxacin adsorption kinetic process are accurately described by the Pseudo-second-order. Pb(II) and ciprofloxacin have synergy in the binary contaminant system, which reveals that Pb(II) adsorption amount is augmented. While ciprofloxacin adsorption amount is also augmented at low Pb(II) concentration and hindered at high Pb(II) concentration. Pb(II) adsorption mechanisms on P-hydrochar (e.g. precipitation, π-π interaction and complexation) are different from the ciprofloxacin (e.g. hydrogen bonding, pore filling, electrostatic attraction). Pb(II) and ciprofloxacin adsorption process are further analyzed by the density functional theory. The coexisted ions have little influenced on Pb(II) and ciprofloxacin adsorption. P-hydrochar still has large Pb(II) and ciprofloxacin adsorption capacity after five cycles. This result indicates that poplar sawdust waste can be converted into an efficient adsorbent to remove Pb(II) and ciprofloxacin from wastewater,.

Functional Materials for Water Restoration: A "Fish Cage" for Efficient Capture of Pb(II) Ions

In this work, a "fish cage" material for trapping Pb(II) ions has been successfully obtained, which is a novel clathrate functionalized metal-oganic framework (Cage-MOF) by introducing free adsorption sites (SO42-). The three-dimensional (3D) cage structure of Cage-MOF gives it a larger contact area and can capture "swimming fish" (Pb(II)) like a "fishing cage" in a water solution. This is the first high-efficiency adsorption material obtained by introducing free coordination groups. Cage-MOF not only has excellent water stability but also improves the selectivity and affinity for Pb(II) ions in water because of the presence of sulfate adsorption sites, and its adsorption capacity is as high as 806 mg/g. This work shows a novel and effective idea for the synthesis of water restoration materials.

Solid-phase extraction and separation of indium with P2O4-UiO-66-MOFs (di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid-UiO-66-metal-organic frameworks)

Compared with the traditional liquid-liquid extraction method, solid-phase extraction agents are of great significance for the recovery of indium metal due to their convenience, free of organic solvents, and fully exposed activity. In this study, P₂O₄ (di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid) was chemically modified by using UiO-66 to form the solid-phase extraction agent P₂O₄-UiO-66-MOFs (di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid-UiO-66-metal-organic frameworks) to adsorb In(III). The results show that the Zr of UiO-66 bonds with the P-OH of P₂O₄ to form a composite P₂O₄-UiO-66-MOF, which was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The adsorption process of indium on P₂O₄-UiO-66-MOFs followed pseudo first-order kinetics, and the adsorption isotherms fit the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. The adsorption capabilities can reach 192.8 mg/g. After five consecutive cycles of adsorption-desorption-regeneration, the indium adsorption capacity by P₂O₄-UiO-66-MOFs remained above 99%. The adsorption mechanism analysis showed that the P=O and P-OH of P₂O₄ molecules coated on the surface of P₂O₄-UiO-66-MOFs participated in the adsorption reaction of indium. In this paper, the extractant P₂O₄ was modified into solid P₂O₄-UiO-66-MOFs for the first time. This work provides a new idea for the development of solid-phase extractants for the recovery of indium.

Enhancement of the Solubility of BS Class II Drugs with MOF and MOF/GO Composite Materials: Case Studies of Felodipine, Ketoprofen and Ibuprofen

In this research, a novel composite material composed of Metal-Organic Framework material (MOF) and graphite oxide was synthesized and evaluated as a possible drug-loading vehicle. HKUST-1, a MOF material originally designed by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, was used as a model porous material. The aim was to synthesize a drug delivery vehicle for modifying the release kinetics and solubility of poorly soluble drugs (BSC Class II drugs); these are drugs that are known to have poor bioavailability due to their low solubility. We used ketoprofen, ibuprofen, and felodipine as models for BSC Class II drugs. The drugs were loaded onto composite materials through adsorption. The adsorption of these three drugs into the matrix of HKUST-1/GO (graphite oxide), HKUST-1, and graphite oxide was compared. The loading efficiency of the drugs onto the carrier was dependent on the drug molecule and the composition of the drug carrier. The inclusion of graphite oxide in the drug carrier matrix improved the drug loading capacity and modified the drug release rate. The loading of the three drugs felodipine, ketoprofen, and ibuprofen onto HKUST-1 were 33.7, 58, and 79 mg/g respectively. The incorporation of GO into the HKUST-1 matrix resulted in an increase in the loading by 16 and 4 mg/g for the ketoprofen and ibuprofen drugs. When compared to the pure drugs, the solubility of all three drugs in the HKUST-1/GO matrix increased by at least 6 folds.

Adsorption Characteristics and Mechanism of Methylene Blue in Water by NaOH-Modified Areca Residue Biochar

To solve the water pollution problem caused by methylene blue (MB), areca residue biochar (ARB) was prepared by pyrolysis at 600 °C, and modified areca residue biochar (M-ARB) was obtained by modifying ARB with 1.5 mol/L NaOH, and they were utilized to adsorb and eliminate MB from water. The structural characteristics of ARB and M-ARB were examined, and the main influencing factors and adsorption mechanism of MB adsorption process were investigated. The outcomes demonstrated an increase in M-ARB’s specific surface area and total pore volume of 66.67% and 79.61%, respectively, compared with ARB, and the pore structure was more abundant, and the content of oxygen element was also significantly increased. When the reaction temperature was 25 °C, starting pH of the mixture was 10, the initial MB concentration was 50 mg/L, the ARB and M-ARB dosages were 0.07 g/L and 0.04 g/L, respectively, the adsorption equilibrium was achieved at about 210 min, and the elimination rate for MB exceeded 94%. The adsorption behaviors of ARB and M-ARB on MB were more in line with the Langmuir isotherm model (R2 > 0.95) and the quasi-secondary kinetic model (R2 > 0.97), which was characterized by single-molecule layer chemisorption. The highest amount of MB that may theoretically be absorbed by M-ARB in water ranging from 136.81 to 152.72 mg/g was 74.99–76.59% higher than that of ARB. The adsorption process was a spontaneous heat absorption reaction driven by entropy increase, and the adsorption mechanism mainly involved electrostatic gravitational force, pore filling, hydrogen bonding, and π–π bonding, which was a complex process containing multiple mechanisms of action. NaOH modification can make the ARB have more perfect surface properties and more functional group structures that can participate in the adsorption reaction, which can be used as an advantageous adsorption material for MB removal in water.

Innovative adsorbents based on bentonite mining waste for removal of cationic dyes from wastewater

Waste rock from bentonite mining (WRBM) was evaluated as potential adsorbents for removing crystal violet (CV) and methylene blue (MB) cationic dyes from contaminated water. The waste samples (AM01, AM02, and AM03) were collected from different locations of the bentonite mine and characterized through X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, N₂ adsorption/desorption, and cation exchange capacity. The adsorption efficiency of CV and MB dyes was investigated through the effect of initial concentration, contact time, pH, the dosage of adsorbent, and temperature. Sample AM02 showed the largest surface area (69.13 m²/g) and the best adsorptive performance for both dyes, with removal more significant than 90%. The adsorption of CV and MB in the waste followed the Langmuir isothermal model. Samples AM01 and AM02 followed the pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic model, while AM03 better fitted the Elovich kinetic model. The enthalpy (ΔH), entropy (ΔS), and Gibbs energy (ΔG) were evaluated as adsorption parameters. The process of adsorption of CV and MB dyes in the waste was predominantly endothermic and occurred spontaneously. WRBM samples proved to be a promising candidate for removing cationic dyes present in water.

Graphene Synthesis Techniques and Environmental Applications

Graphene is fundamentally a two-dimensional material with extraordinary optical, thermal, mechanical, and electrical characteristics. It has a versatile surface chemistry and large surface area. It is a carbon nanomaterial, which comprises sp² hybridized carbon atoms placed in a hexagonal lattice with one-atom thickness, giving it a two-dimensional structure. A large number of synthesis techniques including epitaxial growth, liquid phase exfoliation, electrochemical exfoliation, mechanical exfoliation, and chemical vapor deposition are used for the synthesis of graphene. Graphene prepared using different techniques can have a number of benefits and deficiencies depending on its application. This study provides a summary of graphene preparation techniques and critically assesses the use of graphene, its derivates, and composites in environmental applications. These applications include the use of graphene as membrane material for the detoxication and purification of water, active material for gas sensing, heavy metal ions detection, and CO₂ conversion. Furthermore, a trend analysis of both synthesis techniques and environmental applications of graphene has been performed by extracting and analyzing Scopus data from the past ten years. Finally, conclusions and outlook are provided to address the residual challenges related to the synthesis of the material and its use for environmental applications.

Efficient capture of U(VI) by magnetic Zr(IV)-ethylenediamine tetramethylene phosphonic acid inorganic-organic hybrid

The separation of magnetic adsorbents from aqueous solutions is made simple by using an external magnetic field. Herein, magnetic Zr(IV)-ethylenediamine tetramethylene phosphonic acid (EDTMPA) hybrids (MZrOP-x-T, x, and T were the different quality of Fe₃O₄@C and temperature in the synthesis process, respectively). A study was conducted on the uses of MZrOP-x-T in the capture of U(VI). The influences of pH, adsorption period, initial concentration, and temperature were all investigated. Furthermore, the desorption and reusability of the materials were explored. The optimal values of x and T were 0.2 g and 100 °C, respectively. At 298.15 K, the maximum adsorption capacity of MZrOP-0.2-100 was 330.30 mg·g^-1. The current research demonstrates that MZrOP-0.2-100 is a potentially effective material in removing U(VI) from radioactive solution.

Enhanced adsorption performance of UiO-66 via modification with functional groups and integration into hydrogels

University of Oslo-66 (UiO-66) was a potential adsorbent for removing various pollutants from wastewater. Modifying the UiO-66 surface with different functional groups could enhance the adsorption performance. In this study, the UiO-66 modified with a functional group of -NH₂ or -NO₂ was prepared and tested to adsorb different pollutants. The results showed that -NO₂ modified UiO-66 increased the adsorption capacity of tetracycline by 17 times to 94.08 mg g^-1 compared with unmodified UiO-66. The adsorption process of UiO-66-NO₂ followed the pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model with a maximum isotherm adsorption capacity of 127.32 mg g^-1. The adsorption interaction was hydrogen bonding and electrostatic attraction. The UiO-66-NO₂ also showed good adsorption performance to Co²⁺, Methylene blue, Congo red. Fixing UiO-66-NO₂ into hydrogel performed a stable absorption performance with a high absorption capacity (71.56 mg g^-1) to TC and a good regeneration rate (85%) after five cycles, providing a novel applicable way to remove pollutants from wastewater.

Fly ash derived calcium silicate hydrate as a highly efficient and fast adsorbent for Cu(ii) ions: role of copolymer functionalization

The environmental issues caused by heavy metal accumulation from polluted water are becoming serious and threaten human health and the ecosystem. The adsorption technology represented by calcium silicate hydrate has attracted much attention, but suffers from high manufacturing costs and poor stability bottlenecks. Here, we have proposed a "trash-to-treasure" conversion strategy to prepare a thin sheet calcium silicate hydrate material (ACSH) using solid waste fly ash as silicon source and a small amount of Acumer2000 as modifier. The obtained materials showed fast adsorption rates, superior adsorption capacities and remarkable long-term stability for Cu(ii) removal. Under the conditions of 0.5 g L-1 adsorbent concentration and 100 mL Cu(ii) solution with a concentration of 100 mg L-1, ACSH can adsorb 95.6% Cu(ii) within 5 min. The adsorption isotherms conformed to Langmuir models and the maximum adsorption capacity was 532 mg g-1. Using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, specific surface area and pore structure analysis, it was found that the excellent adsorption performance could be attributed to the ultrahigh surface area (356 m2 g-1), abundant pores and multiple active sites induced by Acumer2000 modification. Moreover, the encapsulation effect from carboxylate and long carbon chains in Acumer2000 endowed modified samples with strong corrosion resistance to CO2, which effectively inhibited the formation of by-product CaCO3 and retained the remarkable adsorption performance for more than 100 days. Interestingly enough, the advantages of ACSH in economy and performance could been maintained in ACSH based adsorptive membranes. This work is of great significance for solid waste utilization as well as the preparation of high quality, cost-effective and long-term stability calcium silicate hydrate materials.
