Mobilization of colloids during sediment resuspension and its effect on the release of heavy metals and dissolved organic matter

Distribution and bioaccumulation of trace elements in two Cyprinidae fish species in the Indus river, Pakistan, including the impact of hydraulic structure on macroinvertebrates' biodiversity

The concentration of trace elements (chromium, lead, zinc, copper, manganese, and iron) was determined in water, sediment and tissues of two Cyprinidae fish species - Labeo rohita and Tor putitora - collected from the eight sampling stations of Indus River in 2022 for four successive seasons (autumn, winter, spring, summer), and also study the present condition of macroinvertebrates after the construction of hydraulic structure. The obtained results of trace element concentrations in the Indus River were higher than the acceptable drinking water standards by WHO. The nitrate concentration ranges from 5.2 to 59.6 mg l-1, turbidity ranges from 3.00 to 63.9 NTU, total suspended solids and ammonium ions are below the detection limit (<0.05). In the liver, highest dry wt trace elements (μg/g) such as Cr (4.32), Pb (7.07), Zn (58.26), Cu (8.38), Mn (50.27), and Fe (83.9) for the Labeo rohita; and Tor Putitora has significantly greater accumulated concentration (Cr, Pb, Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe) in muscle and liver than did Labeo rohita species. Additionally, lower number of macroinvertebrates were recorded during the monsoonal season than pre-monsoon and post-monsoon. Local communities surrounded by polluted environments are more probably to consume more fish and expose them to higher concentrations of toxic trace elements (lead and copper). The findings also provide a basis for broader ecological management of the Indus River, which significantly influenced human beings and socioeconomic disasters, particularly in the local community.

Mass variations and transfer process of shrimp farming pollutants in aquaculture drainage systems: Effects of DOM features and physicochemical properties

The expansion of aquaculture produces increasing pollutant loads, necessitating the use of drainage systems to discharge wastewater into surface water. To assess the mass variations and transfer process of aquaculture wastewater, an entire aquaculture drainage investigation lasting for 48 h was conducted, focusing on the nutrients, heavy metals, dissolved organic matter (DOM), and physicochemical properties of drainage in a commercial shrimp farm. The findings revealed that early drainage produced more heavy metals, total nitrogen (TN), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), and feed-like proteins from aquaculture floating feed and additives, whereas late drainage produced more PO43--P and total dissolved phosphorus (TP). A few pollutants, including DON, Cu, and feed-like proteins, were effectively removed, whereas the contents of TN, dissolved inorganic nitrogen, and Zn increased in the multi-level aquaculture drainage system. Limited dilution indicated that in-stream transfer was the main process shaping pollutant concentrations within the drainage system. In the lower ditches, NO3--N, heavy metals, and feed-like proteins exhibited evident in-stream attenuation, while TN and NH4+-N underwent significant in-stream enrichment processes, especially in ditch C, with the transfer coefficient values (vf) of -1.74E-5 and -2.04E-5. This indicates that traditional aquaculture drainage systems serve as nitrogen sinks, rather than efficient nutrient purge facilitators. Notably, DOM was identified as a more influential factor in shaping the in-stream transfer process in aquaculture drainage systems, with an interpretation rate 40.79% higher than that of the physiochemical properties. Consequently, it is necessary to eliminate the obstacles posed by DOM to pollutant absorption and net zero emissions in aquaculture drainage systems in the future. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS: Nutrients, heavy metals, and dissolved organic matter are hazardous pollutants originating from high-density aquaculture. As the sole conduit to natural waters, aquaculture drainage systems have pivotal functions in receiving and purifying wastewater, in which the in-stream transfer process is affected by ambient conditions. This field study investigated the spatial variations, stage distinctions, effects of physicochemical properties, and dissolved organic matter (DOM) features. This finding suggests that the aquaculture drainage system as a nitrogen sink and DOM source. While the DOM is the key factor in shaping the in-stream transfer process, and obstacles for pollutant elimination. This study helps in understanding the fate of aquaculture pollutants and reveals the drawbacks of traditional aquaculture drainage systems.

Co-influence of biochar-supported effective microorganisms and seasonal changes on dissolved organic matter and microbial activity in eutrophic lake

DOM (dissolved organic matter) play a crucial role in lakes' geochemical and carbon cycles. Eutrophication evolution would influence nutrient status of waters and investigating the DOM variation helps a better understanding of bioremediation on environmental behavior of DOM in eutrophic lakes. In our study, the contents, compositions and characteristics of systematic DOM&SOM (sediment organic matter) were greatly influenced by seasonal changes. But the effective bioremediations obviously reduced the DOM concentration and thus mitigated the eutrophication outbreak risks in water bodies due to the increased MBC (microbial biomass carbon), microbial activity and metabolism. In early summer, the overall DOM in each treatment were readily low levels and derived from both autochthonous and exogenous origins, dominated by fulvic acid-like. In midsummer, the DOM contents and characteristics in each treatment increased significantly as phytoplankton activity improved, and the majority of DOM were humic acid-like and mainly of biological origin. The greatest differences of enzymes, MBC, microbial metabolism and DOM&SOM removal among different treatments were observed in summer months. In autumn, the systematic DOM&SOM slightly reduced due to the deceased microbial activity, in which the microbial humic acids were main component and derived from endogenous sources. Additionally, the gradually decreased SOM with cultivated time in each treatment was a result of microbiological conversion of SOM into DOM. For various treatments, BE, BE.A, BE.C and BE.E increased the MBC, enzymatic and microbial activities due to the application of biochar-supported EMs. Among these, BE and BE.A, especially BE.A with oxygen supplement, achieved the most desirable effect on reducing systematic DOM&SOM levels and increasing enzymatic and microbial activities. The group of EM also reduced the levels of DOM&SOM as improved degradation of EMs for DOM. However, BC, BE.C and BE.E finally did not achieved the desirable effect on reducing DOM&SOM due to the suppression of microbial activities, respectively, from high dose of biochar, weakening of dominant species and additional introduction of EMs in low liveness.

A Critical Look at Colloid Generation, Stability, and Transport in Redox-Dynamic Environments: Challenges and Perspectives

Colloid generation, stability, and transport are important processes that can significantly influence the fate and transport of nutrients and contaminants in environmental systems. Here, we critically review the existing literature on colloids in redox-dynamic environments and summarize the current state of knowledge regarding the mechanisms of colloid generation and the chemical controls over colloidal behavior in such environments. We also identify critical gaps, such as the lack of universally accepted cross-discipline definition and modeling infrastructure that hamper an in-depth understanding of colloid generation, behavior, and transport potential. We propose to go beyond a size-based operational definition of colloids and consider the functional differences between colloids and dissolved species. We argue that to predict colloidal transport in redox-dynamic environments, more empirical data are needed to parametrize and validate models. We propose that colloids are critical components of element budgets in redox-dynamic systems and must urgently be considered in field as well as lab experiments and reactive transport models. We intend to bring further clarity and openness in reporting colloidal measurements and fate to improve consistency. Additionally, we suggest a methodological toolbox for examining impacts of redox dynamics on colloids in field and lab experiments.

Selective stepwise adsorption for enhanced removal of multi-component dissolved organic chemicals from petrochemical wastewater

The coexistence of multi-component dissolved organic chemicals causes tremendous challenge in purifying petrochemical wastewater, and stepwise selective adsorption holds the most promise for enhanced treatments. This study is designed to enhance the removal of multiple dissolved organic chemicals by stepwise adsorption. Special attention is given to the selective removal mechanisms for the major pollutant N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), the sensitive pollutant fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) and other components. The results indicated that the combination of coal activated carbon and aluminum silica gel produced a synergistic effect and broke the limitation of removing only certain pollutants. Combined removal rates of 80.5 % for the dissolved organic carbon and 86.7 % for the biotoxicity in petrochemical wastewater were obtained with the enhanced two-step adsorption. The adsorption performance of both adsorbents remained stable even after five cycles. The selective adsorption mechanism revealed that hydrophobic organics such as DMF was adsorbed by the macropores of coal activated carbon, while the FDOM was eliminated by π-π stacking, electrostatic interaction and hydrophobic interaction. The hydrophilic organics were removed by the mesopores of aluminum silica gel, the silica hydroxyl groups and hydrophilic interaction. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the selective adsorption mechanism and enhanced stepwise removal of multiple pollutants in petrochemical wastewater, which will guide the deep treatment of complex wastewater.

Evaluating the capacity of heavy metal pollution enrichment in green vegetation in the industrial zone, Northwest China

It focused on heavy metal pollution of green vegetation in Tuokexun County, Xinjiang Northwest China's suburban industrial area, using inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometer to analyze the samples for Mn, Ni, Zn, Cd, Hg, Pb, As, Cu, and Cr contents. The soil's heavy metal content in the study area indicated a minor level of pollution overall (P = 1.77), with the most severe contamination being Hg, which is more likely to be caused by human activities. Heavy metal elements in trees have the most stable composition in comparison to grass and shrubs, with varying concentrations across different vegetation. The concentrations of Mn, Cd and Hg were highest in the Haloxylon ammodendron, Ni in Morus alba, Pb, As and Cu in Nitraria tangutorums, and Cr in Phragmites australis. Heavy metal restoration is most effectively performed by shrubs, and there are disparities in heavy metal enrichment among various vegetation. No significant difference was found in heavy metal enrichment between the aboveground and underground parts of vegetation. Based on the average of the membership function, Tamarix exhibits the strongest ability to enrich heavy metals, while Nitraria tangutorum comes in second, and Cynanchum chinense R.Br. is the least effective among all plant species. Morus alba is recommended as the primary planting species in the area. Nitraria tangutorum and Haloxylon ammodendron have good potential for Cd and As restoration and can be used as supporting vegetation.

Reducing the mass and decreasing the bioavailability of heavy mental from organic wastes treated by black soldier fly larvae

Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL), Hermetia illucens L., are widely used to reduce the mass of various wastes. However, the potential metal tolerance mechanisms during periods of waste bioconversion by BSFL remain largely unknown. To further reveal the mechanisms, BSFL were used to treat the agricultural organic wastes, including pig manure (PM), cow manure (COM), spent mushroom substrate (SMS), and wet distiller grains (WDG). After these individual and combined waste(s) were treated by BSFL, we investigated the waste reduction rates and evaluated the responses of BSFL gut microbes to heavy metals of agricultural organic wastes. Additionally, the colloidal particles of residual wastes were characterized by combing energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, Size potential, Zeta potential, and excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy. Results indicated that the waste reduction rates were up to 74% in COM+WDG and 69% in WDG, most of heavy metals (e.g., Zn and Co) from organic wastes were not accumulated in the bodies of mature larvae after treatment. Further, results obtained from the prediction of gene function on the basis of 16 S rRNA data revealed that the presence of multi-resistance genes in the gut of BSFL can help the larvae resist Zn and/or Co stress. In addition, the drug sensitivity test implied that BSFL5_L and BSFL6_L from BSFL gut bacterial strains have multi-resistance to Co and Zn. Additionally, EDX results revealed that the colloidal particles in five waste residues after BSFL treatment are mainly consisted of Fe, Ca and Si, which can capture heavy metals (e.g., Cu, Mn). Results from EEM spectroscopy and PARAFAC showed that tryptophan-like and humic-like accumulatively account for 56%- 68% of all components. Importantly, these two components could strongly bind the metal elements and form colloidal particles with high stability, and therefore reduce the heavy metal pollution of agricultural organic wastes. Our findings offered an environment-friendly method to treat agricultural organic wastes, which would be far-reaching influence to our environment.

Environmental impact of solution pH on the formation and migration of iron colloids in deep subsurface energy systems

Deep subsurface stimulation processes often promote fluid-rock interactions that can lead to the formation of small colloidal particles that are suspected to migrate through the rock matrix, partially or fully clog pores and microfractures, and promote the mobilization of contaminants. Thus, the goal of this work is to understand the geochemical changes of the host rock in response to reservoir stimulation that promote the formation and migration of colloids. Two different carbonate-rich shales were exposed to different solution pHs (pH = 2 and 7). Iron and other mineral transformations at the shale-fluid interface were first characterized by synchrotron-based XRF mapping. Then, colloids that were able to migrate from the shale into the bulk fluid were characterized by synchrotron-based extended X-ray absorption structure (EXAFS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and single-particle inductively coupled plasma time-of-flight mass spectrometry (sp-icpTOF-MS). When exposed to the pH = 2 solution, extensive mineral dissolution and secondary precipitation was observed; iron-(oxyhydr)oxide colloids colocated with silicates were observed by SEM at the fluid-shale interfaces, and the mobilization of chromium and nickel with these iron colloids into the bulk fluid was detected by sp-icpTOF-MS. Iron EXAFS spectra of the solution at the shale-fluid interface suggests the rapid (within minutes) formation of ferrihydrite-like nanoparticles. Thus, we demonstrate that the pH neutralization promotes the mobilization of existing silicate minerals and the rapid formation of new iron colloids. These Fe colloids have the potential to migrate through the shale matrix and mobilize other heavy metals (such as Cr and Ni, in this study) and impacting groundwater quality, as well produced waters from these hydraulic fracturing operations.

Impacts of the steel industry on sediment pollution by heavy metals in urban water system

The impact of the steel industry on sediment heavy metal (HM) pollution in urban aquatic environments was investigated in a major iron ore-producing area (Ma'anshan) in China. The concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn were 9.68 ± 3.56, 170.31 ± 82.40, 90.62 ± 19.54, 30.61 ± 6.72, 125.43 ± 63.60, and 1276.59 ± 701.90 mg/kg in the steel industry intruded upon sediments and 4.63 ± 1.41, 87.60 ± 10.96, 52.67 ± 19.99, 37.49 ± 6.17, 35.84 ± 11.41, and 189.02 ± 95.57 mg/kg in the control area, respectively. Comparing with the local soil background (0.08 mg/kg for Cd, 62.6 mg/kg for Cr, 19.3 mg/kg for Cu, 28.1 mg/kg for Ni, 26.0 mg/kg for Pb, and 58.0 mg/kg for Zn), significantly higher levels of Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn were detected in the steel industry affected sediments. The enrichment factor and principal component analysis indicated that the heavy metals (HMs), except for Ni, were primarily derived from anthropogenic inputs, particularly from steel industrial activities. Multiple risk assessment models suggested that the sediments affected by industrial activities showed significant toxic effects for Cd, Cr, Pb, and Zn, with Cd being the main contributor to sediment toxicity. However, the alkaline nature of the sediments (pH = 7.85 ± 0.57) and the high proportion of residual fraction Cd (61.09% ± 26.64%) may help to reduce the toxic risks in the sediments. Effective measures to eliminate tinuous thethe continous input of Cd and Zn via surface runoff are crucial.

Reduction of the environmental impact of wastewater from the pretreatment of biodiesel production: A hybrid proposal for decontamination via photo-electro-Fenton/Fered/O3

Complex wastewater is generated during biodiesel production. We propose a new solution for the treatment of wastewater from enzymatic pretreatment of biodiesel production (WEPBP) by using a hybrid system based on the photo-Fered-Fenton process with O₃ assistance (PEF-Fered-O₃). We applied response surface methodology (RSM) to determine the suitable conditions for the PEF-Fered-O₃ process: a current intensity of 3 A, an initial solution pH controlled at 6.4, an initial H₂O₂ concentration of 12,000 mg L^-1, and an O₃ concentration of 50 mg L^-1. We performed three new experiments under similar conditions with slight changes to the conditions, namely a longer reaction time (120 min) and single or periodic H₂O₂ addition (i.e., small H₂O₂ additions at different reaction times). Periodic H₂O₂ addition provided the best removal results probably by reducing the occurrence of undesired side reactions that cause hydroxyl radical (^•OH) scavenging. With the application of the hybrid system, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC) decreased by 91% and 75%, respectively. We also evaluated the presence of metals such as iron, copper, and calcium; electric conductivity; and voltage at 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, and 120 min. We submitted raw and treated WEPBP sludge samples to X-ray diffraction to study the degree of crystallinity. There was a rearrangement of the compounds present in treated WEPBP, possibly caused by oxidation of a large fraction of organic matter. Finally, we evaluated the genotoxicity and cytotoxicity of WEPBP by using Allium cepa meristematic root cells. Treated WEPBP was less toxic to these cells, denoted by improvements in gene regulation and cell morphology. Given the current scenario for the biodiesel industry, applying the proposed hybrid PEF-Fered-O₃ system at suitable conditions provides an efficient alternative to treat a complex matrix, namely WEPBP, to reduce its potential to cause abnormalities in the cells of living organisms. Thus, the negative impacts of the discharge of WEPBP in the environment might be reduced.

Dynamic retention of thallium(I) on humic acid: Novel insights into the heterogeneous complexation ability and responsiveness

Widely distributed soil humic acid (HA) would significantly affect the environmental migration behavior of Tl(I), but a quantitative and mechanistic understanding of the dynamic Tl(I) retention process on HA is limited. A unified kinetic model was established by coupling the humic ion-binding model with a stirred-flow kinetic model, which quantified the complexation constants and responsiveness coefficients during dynamic Tl(I)-HA complexation. Furthermore, the heterogeneous complexation mechanism of HA and Tl(I) was revealed by batch adsorption experiments, stirred-flow migration experiments, and 2D-FTIR-COS analysis. An increase in pH significantly improved the responsiveness of HA organic binding sites, promoting Tl(I) dynamic retention. Monodentate carboxyl groups induced rapid Tl(I) complexation (k_d = 1.9 min^-1) in strongly acidic environments. Under weakly acidic conditions, Tl(I) retention on HA was mainly attributed to the synergistic complexation effect of carboxyl and amide groups. Among the groups, multidentate carboxyl-phenolic hydroxyl sites could achieve sustained Tl(I) retention due to their stable complexing properties (logK = 4.48∼7.46) and slow response (k_d = 1.1 × 10^-3 min^-1). These findings are crucial for a comprehensive understanding of the environmental interactions of Tl(I) with humic substances in swamp environments.

Heavy metals in riverine/estuarine sediments from an aquaculture wetland in metropolitan areas, China: Characterization, bioavailability and probabilistic ecological risk

Aquaculture wetlands, particularly those located within urban areas, are fragile ecosystems due to urban and aquaculture impacts. However, to date, there are no reports on the combined toxicity of heavy metal mixtures in aquatic biota in sediments from aquaculture wetlands in metropolitan areas. Thus, the characterization, bioavailability, and ecological probability risk of heavy metals were studied in the riverine/estuarine sediments of the Rongjiang River in an aquaculture wetland in Chaoshan metropolis, South China. In the study area, the average total concentrations (mg/kg) were 2.38 (Cd), 113.40 (Pb), 88.27 (Cr), 148.25 (Ni), 62.08 (Cu), 125.18 (Zn), 45,636.44 (Fe), and 797.18 (Mn), with the Cd pollution being regarded as extremely serious based on the enrichment factor (EF). There are two main sources of heavy metals in the study area; Ni, Pb, Zn, Fe and Mn are mainly from domestic waste, while Cr, Cd and Cu are possibly associated with industrial production activities. The bioavailability of most heavy metals accounted for more than 20% of the total concentration. The combined toxicity of heavy metal mixtures based on probabilistic risk assessment suggests that the surface sediments of the Rongjiang River and its estuary had a 15.71% probability of toxic effects on aquatic biota.
