Abstract
Cadmium, a harmful food contaminant, poses severe health risks. There are ongoing efforts to reduce cadmium pollution and alleviate its toxicity, including plant-based dietary intervention. This review hypothesizes that microRNAs (miRNAs), as regulatory eukaryotic transcripts, play crucial roles in modulating cadmium-induced organ damage, and plant food-derived bioactive compounds provide protective effects via miRNA-mediated mechanisms. The review reveals that there are interplays between certain miRNAs and plant food-derived dietary bioactive substances when these bioactives, especially phenolics, counteract cadmium toxicity through regulating physiologic and pathologic events (including oxidative stress, apoptosis, autophagy and inflammation). The review discusses common miRNA-associated physiologic/pathologic events and signal pathways shared by the cadmium toxicity and dietary intervention processes. This paper identifies the existing knowledge gaps and potential future work (e.g. joint actions between miRNAs and other noncoding RNAs in the fights against cadmium). The insights provided by this review can improve food safety strategies and public health outcomes.

Abstract
Lonicera japonica Thunb.,commonly referred to as Caprifolium japonicum (Thunb.) Dum. Cours.,is a perennial herb classified under the caprifoliaceae family. It is utilized worldwide as a medicinal plant and also serves as food source and an ornamental plant. Lonicera japonica Thunb. polysaccharides (LJP) constitute one of its primary components, demonstrating a wide range of biological activities including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, anti-Alzheimer's, anti-diabetic, and anti-cancer effects. This paper reviews and summarizes recent research advancements on the extraction, purification, structural characteristics, and biological activities of LJP, offering a valuable foundation and up-to-date insights for the continued development and application of LJP in pharmaceutical and functional food sectors.

Abstract
Introduction Resveratrol (Res), a natural plant antitoxin polyphenol, is widely used in animal husbandry due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and current research has focused on humans, sows, and female mice. This study aimed to analyze the effects of dietary Res supplementation in ewes on antioxidant activity, immune responses, hormone levels, rumen microbiota and metabolites across various reproductive stages (estrus, pregnancy, and lactation). Methods Twenty-four healthy ewe lambs (Hu sheep, 2 months old) with a similar body weight (BW) (mean: 21.79 ± 2.09 kg) were selected and randomly divided into two groups: the control group (Con) and the Res group (Res). The Res group received 10 mg/kg Res (based on BW) in addition to their basal diet. Results Res increased the levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and estradiol (E2) in ewes at sexual maturity (p < 0.05). Additionally, Res supplementation induced significant increases in serum glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), IgG, FSH, and LH levels during estrus (p < 0.05); serum IgA, IgG and IgM during pregnancy and lactation (p < 0.05); and serum LH, glucose, GSH-Px, and catalase (CAT) levels during lactation (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, serum interleukin 1β (IL-1β) (p =0.005) and cholesterol levels (p = 0.041) during the lactation stage decreased following Res supplementation. Notably, colostrum IgA, IgG, and fat concentrations were significantly higher in the Res group than in the Con group (p < 0.05). Moreover, Res altered the rumen microbiota in ewes. Specifically, the relative abundance of Prevotella (p < 0.05) during pregnancy and Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group (p < 0.001) during lactation were significantly increased in ewes under Res treatment. The abundance of Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group was positively correlated with the levels of Ig A, Ig M, E2, FSH, LH, GSH-PX, and CAT. Additionally, Res altered the activity of metabolic pathways such as progesterone-mediated oocyte maturation, the estrogen signaling pathway, ovarian steroidogenesis, and the AMPK signaling pathway, and the levels of AICAR and 2-hydroxyestradiol metabolites, both during pregnancy and lactation. Discussion There findings show that Res can improve health, antioxidant status, and immune activity throughout the reproductive cycle in ewes by regulating rumen microorganisms and metabolites.

Abstract
Fluorine (F) and Cadmium (Cd) have given rise to public concern regarding their adverse impacts on the environment and human beings. Yet, the toxic interplay between F and Cd on the intestine is still vague. Aiming to investigate the role of F on Cd-damaged intestine, a total of five groups of 30 SD rats were picked at random to be gavaged for 90 days: Control group (Ultra-pure water), Cd (Cd 1 mg/kg), Cd+LF (Cd 1 mg/kg+F 15 mg/kg), Cd+MF (Cd 1 mg/kg+F 45 mg/kg), and Cd+HF (Cd 1 mg/kg+F 75 mg/kg). It demonstrated that Cd enriched in the intestine and disordered intestinal barrier of rats. Interestingly, two side effects of F were observed resisting to the Cd toxicity. The Cd levels in colon contents were attenuated by 45.45 %, 28.11 %, and 19.54 % by F supplement, respectively. In the Cd+LF group, SOD, GSH-Px, and CAT activities elevated by 0.93, 1.76, and 1.78 times, respectively, and the MDA content reduced 0.67 times; the expressions of NQO1, SOD2, and GSH-Px mRNA markedly enhanced, as well as the Keap1 mRNA significantly decreased. Nevertheless, all indexes above in the Cd+HF group showed the opposite trends. Furthermore, LPS levels decreased by 45.93 % for the Cd+LF group and increased by 12.70 % in that the Cd+HF group. The ZO-1 expression in the Cd+LF group increased, whereas the Cd+HF group's expressions of Claudin-1, Occludin, and ZO-1 were all diminished by 35.46 %, 27.23 %, and 16.32 %, respectively. Moreover, the levels of TNF-α, IL-1β and TLR-4 decreased and IL-10 level promoted, while all showed opposite trends in the Cd+HF group. Collectively, it indicated there is a twofold interplay between F and Cd on intestinal damage and mainly depends on F dosages.

Abstract
Interstitial nephritis is the primary cause of mortality in IBV-infected chickens. Our previous research has demonstrated that Radix Isatidis polysaccharide (RIP) could alleviate this form of interstitial nephritis. To explore the mechanism, SPF chickens and chicken embryonic kidney cells (CEKs) were pre-treated with RIP and subsequently infected with QX-genotype IBV strain. Kidneys were sampled for transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses, and the cecum contents were collected for 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Results showed that pre-treatment with RIP led to a 50 % morbidity reduction in infected-chickens, along with decreased tissue lesion and viral load in the kidneys. Multi-omics analysis indicated three possible pathways (including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptosis) which associated with RIP's efficacy against interstitial nephritis. Following further validation both in vivo and in vitro, the results showed that pre-treatment with RIP could activate the antioxidant transcription factor Nrf2, stimulate antioxidant enzyme expression, and consequently inhibit oxidative stress. Pre-treatment with RIP could also significantly reduce the expression of NLRP3 inflammasome and apoptosis-associated proteins (including Bax, Caspase-3, and Caspase-9). Additionally, RIP was also observed to promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the intestine. Overall, pretreatment with RIP can alleviate QX-genotype IBV-induced interstitial nephritis via the Nrf2/NLRP3/Caspase-3 signaling pathway. This study lays the groundwork for the potential use of RIP in controlling avian infectious bronchitis (IB).

Abstract
Flammulina velutipes, a widely cultivated species of edible fungus, exhibits diverse functional activities attributed to its polysaccharides. In this study, we employed an in vitro model to investigate the impact of F. velutipes polysaccharides (FVP) fermentation on gut microbiota, with a particular focus on Bacteroides. FVP fermentation resulted in the proliferation of microbiota associated with short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) metabolism and suppression of Escherichia-Shigella. Bacteroides emerged as potential primary degraders of FVP, with species-level analysis identifying the preference of B. thetaiotaomicron and B. intestinalis in FVP degradation. Metabolomics analysis revealed significant increases in hypoxanthine and 7-methyladenine contents, with histidine metabolism emerging as the most enriched pathway. B. nordii and B. xylanisolvens exhibited the most influence on amino acid and SCFA metabolism. Understanding the mechanisms by which gut microbiota metabolize FVP can provide valuable insights into the potential of FVP to promote intestinal health and disease prevention.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) refers to long-term medical conditions that involve inflammation of the digestive tract, and the global incidence and prevalence of IBD are on the rise. Gut microbes play an important role in maintaining the intestinal health of the host, and the occurrence, development, and therapeutic effects of IBD are closely related to the structural and functional changes of gut microbes. Published studies have shown that the natural products from traditional Chinese medicine have direct or indirect regulatory impacts on the composition and metabolism of the gut microbes. In this review, we summarize the research progress of several groups of natural products, i.e., flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, polysaccharides, polyphenols, and terpenoids, for the therapeutic activities in relieving IBD symptoms. The role of gut microbes and their intestinal metabolites in managing the IBD is presented, with focusing on the mechanism of action of those natural products. Traditional Chinese medicine alleviated IBD symptoms by regulating gut microbes, providing important theoretical and practical basis for the treatment of variable inflammatory intestinal diseases.

Abstract
Paecilomyces hepiali is a precious health-care edible medicinal fungus with rich polysaccharides and exhibits various biological activities. Polysaccharides from P. hepiali fermentation broth (PHP) exhibits good immunomodulatory activity; however, the mechanism underlying PHP-mediated regulation of immunity and gut microbiota remains unclear. To reveal the mechanisms, PHP of different doses were used to intervene cyclophosphamide (CTX)-induced immunosuppressive model mice. The results revealed that PHP facilitated the secretion of serum cytokines, increased the mRNA and protein expression of TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway. Furthermore, it improved the physical barrier function of the intestine by upregulating the expression of tight junction proteins. PHP increased the proliferation of beneficial bacteria, including, Actinobacteriota, Alistipes, Candidatus_Saccharimonas and unclassified_Clostridia_vadinBB60_group, and reduced the abundance of Proteobacteria, Deferribacterota, Mucispirillum and Escherichia_Shigella, promoted the production of short-chain fatty acids, which were positively associated with immune traits. Thus, as an immune enhancer, PHP has the potential to regulate the intestinal immune response in immunosuppressed mice through modulating gut microbiota.

Abstract
Epoxiconazole (EPX) is a broad-spectrum fungicide extensively used in agricultural pest control. Emerging evidence suggests that EPX can adversely affect different endpoints in non-target organisms. Here, the toxicity of EPX was assessed using earlier developmental stage of zebrafish as a model to investigate its effects on metabolism and intestinal microbiota after 21 days of exposure. Our findings indicated that EPX exposure resulted in physiological alterations in juvenile zebrafish, including increase in triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and glycose (Glu). Nile red staining demonstrated enhanced lipid accumulation in juvenile, accompanied by a marked upregulation in the expression of genes associated with TG synthesis. Moreover, EPX led to alterations in amino acids and carnitines levels in 21 dpf (days post fertilization) zebrafish. We also observed that EPX disrupted intestinal barrier function in juvenile zebrafish, manifested by decreasing mucus secretion and changing in genes related to tight junctions. Moreover, for a more comprehensive analysis of the intestinal microbiota in 21 dpf zebrafish, the intestine tissues were dissected under a microscope for 16S rRNA sequencing analysis. The results revealed that EPX altered the structure and abundance of intestinal microflora in zebrafish, including decreased alpha diversity indices and shifted in bacteria at phylum and genus levels. Notably, the correlation analysis demonstrated strong associations between alterations in various pathogenic bacterial genera and levels of amino acids and carnitines. Overall, these findings confirm that the fungicide EPX promotes metabolic disorders and alterations in the intestinal micro-environment in 21 dpf zebrafish, shedding light on the toxicologic effects of chemicals to aquatic organisms during the development stage.

Abstract
The effects of selenium biofortification methods involving sodium selenite and selenium yeast on the structural characteristics, antioxidant activity and binding capacity of Pleurotus eryngii polysaccharides were investigated. Sodium selenite Se-enriched Pleurotus eryngii polysaccharides (Se-SPEP), selenium yeast Se-enriched Pleurotus eryngii polysaccharides (Se-YPEP), and Pleurotus eryngii polysaccharides (PEP) had Se contents of 20.548 ± 1.561, 19.822 ± 0.613, and 0.052 ± 0.016 μg/g, respectively. Compared with PEP, Se-SPEP and Se-YPEP had lower molecular weight and contained the same monosaccharides in varying molar ratios. The results of FT-IR, PS, ZP, and SEM indicated significant alterations in structural characteristics following selenium biofortification. Se-PEPs exhibited superior activity against ABTS, DPPH, and ·OH radicals, as well as the higher binding capacity for Cd2+ and Cu2+ compared to natural polysaccharides. The binding capacity of the polysaccharides for Cd2+ and Cu2+ was higher at pH 6.8 compared to pH 2.0, while the opposite was observed for Pb2+. Furthermore, Se-PEPs exhibited a significantly higher binding capacity for Cd2+ and Cu2+ at both pH levels compared to natural polysaccharides (P < 0.05). Se-YPEP displayed higher antioxidant activity than Se-SPEP, with their binding capacities reversed. These data indicated that selenium biofortification methods have different positive impacts on the structure and activity of polysaccharides compared to natural polysaccharides, making Se-PEPs promising dietary supplements for safeguarding the body against the risks posed by food-derived heavy metals.

Abstract
Edible fungus polysaccharides have garnered significant attention from scholars due to their safety and potential anti-inflammatory activity. However, comprehensive summaries of their anti-inflammatory properties are still rare. This paper provides a detailed overview of the anti-inflammatory effects and mechanisms of these polysaccharides, as well as their impact on inflammation-related diseases. Additionally, the relationship between their structure and anti-inflammatory activity is discussed. It is believed that this review will greatly enhance the understanding of the application of edible fungus polysaccharides in anti-inflammatory treatments, thereby significantly promoting the development and utilization of edible fungi.

Abstract
Early studies have shown that the gut microbiota is a critical target during cadmium exposure. The prebiotic activity of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) plays an essential role in treating intestinal inflammation and damage. However, the exact intestinal barrier protection mechanism of EGCG against cadmium exposure remains unclear. In this experiment, four-week-old mice were exposed to cadmium (5 mg kg-1) for four weeks. Through 16 S rDNA analysis, we found that cadmium disrupted the gut microbiota and inhibited the indole metabolism pathway of tryptophan (TRP), which serves as the principal microbial production route for endogenous ligands to activate the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). Additionally, cadmium downregulated the intestinal AhR signaling pathway and harmed the intestinal barrier function. Treatment with EGCG (20 mg kg-1) and the AhR agonist 6-Formylindolo[3,2-b] carbazole (FICZ) (1 μg/d) significantly activated the AhR pathway and alleviated intestinal barrier injury. Notably, EGCG partially restored the gut microbiota and upregulated the TRP-indole metabolism pathway to increase the level of indole-related AhR agonists. Our findings demonstrate that cadmium dysregulates common gut microbiota to disrupt TRP metabolism, impairing the AhR signaling pathway and intestinal barrier. EGCG reduces cadmium-induced intestinal functional impairment by intervening in the intestinal microbiota to metabolize AhR agonists. This study offers insights into the toxic mechanisms of environmental cadmium and a potential mechanism to protect the intestinal barrier with EGCG.

Abstract
An impact of donepezil against doxorubicin-induced gut barrier disruption and gut dysbiosis has never been investigated. Twenty-four male Wistar rats were divided into three groups. Each group was treated with either vehicle as a control, doxorubicin, or doxorubicin-cotreated with donepezil. Heart rate variability was assessed to reflect the impact of doxorubicin and donepezil. Then, animals were euthanized, and the ileum and its contents were collected in each case to investigate the gut barrier and gut microbiota, respectively. The microbiota-derived endotoxin, trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in the serum were determined. An increase in the sympathetic tone, endotoxins, and TMAO levels with disruption of the gut barrier and a decrease in SCFAs levels were observed in doxorubicin-treated rats. Gut microbiota of doxorubicin-treated rats was significantly different from that of the control group. Donepezil treatment significantly decreased the sympathetic tone, restored the gut barrier, and reduced endotoxin and TMAO levels in doxorubicin-treated rats. Nonetheless, donepezil administration did not alter the gut microbiota profile and levels of SCFAs in doxorubicin-treated rats. Doxorubicin impaired the autonomic balance and the gut barrier, and induced gut dysbiosis, resulting in gut toxicity. Donepezil partially improved the doxorubicin-induced gut toxicity through balancing the autonomic disturbance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The rumen is a crucial digestive organ for dairy cows. The rumen microbiota assists in the digestion of plant feed through microbe-mediated fermentation, during which the plant feed is transformed into nutrients for the cow's use. Variations in the composition and function of the rumen microbiome affect the energy utilization efficiency of dairy cows, which is one of the reasons for the varying body condition scores (BCSs). This study focused on prepartum Holstein dairy cows to analyze differences in rumen microbiota and metabolites among cows with different BCSs. Twelve prepartum dairy cows were divided into two groups, low BCS (LBCS, BCS = 2.75, n = 6) and high BCS (HBCS, BCS = 3.5, n = 6), to explore differences in microbial composition and metabolites. RESULTS In the HBCS group, the genera within the phylum Firmicutes exhibited stronger correlations and greater abundances. Phyla such as Firmicutes, Patescibacteria, Acidobacteriota, Euryarchaeota, and Desulfobacterota, in addition to most of their constituent microbial groups, were significantly more abundant in the HBCS group than in the LBCS group. At the genus level, the abundances of Anaerovibrio, Veillonellaceae_UCG_001, Ruminococcus_gauvreauii_group, Blautia, Eubacterium, Prevotellaceae_YAB2003_group, Schwartzia, and Halomonas significantly increased in the HBCS group. The citrate cycle, involved in carbohydrate metabolism, exhibited a significant enrichment trend, with a notable increase in the abundance of its key substrate, citrate, in the HBCS group. This increase was significantly positively correlated with the differential bacterial genera. CONCLUSION In this study, prepartum dairy cows with higher BCS exhibited greater abundance of Firmicutes. This study provides theoretical support for microbiological research on dairy cows with different BCSs and suggests that regulating the rumen microbiome could help maintain prepartum dairy cows within an optimal BCS range.

Abstract
This review evaluates the therapeutic effects of polysaccharides derived from mushroom species that have medicinal and edible properties. The fungal polysaccharides were recently studied, focusing on their modulation of the gut microbiota and their impact on various diseases. The study covers both clinical and preclinical studies, detailing the results and highlighting the significant influence of these polysaccharides on gut microbiota modulation. It discusses the potential health benefits derived from incorporating these polysaccharides into the diet for managing chronic diseases such as diabetes, neurodegenerative disorders, and cancer. Furthermore, the review emphasizes the interaction between fungal polysaccharides and the gut microbiota, underscoring their role in modulating the gut microbial community. It presents a systematic analysis of the findings, demonstrating the substantial impact of fungal polysaccharides on gut microbiota composition and function, which may contribute to their therapeutic effects in various chronic conditions. We conclude that the modulation of the gut microbiota by these polysaccharides may play a crucial role in mediating their therapeutic effects, offering a promising avenue for further research and potential applications in disease prevention and treatment.

Abstract
Histamine, a bioactive component in certain foods such as Huangjiu has been associated with liver injury and disrupted intestinal balance. This study explored the potential therapeutic effects of fucoidan (FCD) in mitigating histamine-induced imbalances in mice. We found that FCD mitigated liver injury, reducing transaminases, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Histological improvements included decreased cell infiltration and necrosis. FCD restored tight junction proteins and suppressed inflammation-related genes. Western blot analysis revealed FCD's impact on TGF-β1, p-AKT, AKT, CYP2E1, Grp78, NLRP3, Cas-1, and GSDMD. Gut LPS levels decreased with FCD. Gut microbiota analysis showed FCD's modulation effect, reducing Firmicutes and increasing Bacteroides. FCD demonstrates potential in alleviating histamine-induced liver injury, regulating inflammation, and influencing gut microbiota. Further research exploring higher dosages and additional parameters is warranted.

Abstract
In recent years, Flammulina velutipes (F. velutipes) has attracted consequential attention in various research fields due to its rich composition of proteins, vitamins, amino acids, polysaccharides, and polyphenols. F. velutipes polysaccharides (FVPs) are considered as key bioactive components of F. velutipes, demonstrating multiple physiological activities, including immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties. Moreover, they offer health benefits such as antioxidant and anti-aging properties, which have exceptionally valuable clinical applications. Polysaccharides derived from different sources exhibit a wide range of biomedical functions and distinct biological activities. The varied biological functions of polysaccharides, coupled with their extensive application in functional foods and clinical applications, have prompted a heightened focus on polysaccharide research. Additionally, the extraction, deproteinization, and purification of FVPs are fundamental to investigate the structure and biological activities of polysaccharides. Therefore, this review provides a comprehensive and systematic overview of the extraction, deproteinization, purification, characterization, and structural elucidation of FVPs. Furthermore, the biological activities and mechanisms of FVPs have been further explored through in vivo and in vitro experiments. This review aims to provide a theoretical foundation and guide future research and development of FVPs.

Abstract
Edible fungi, commonly known as mushrooms, are precious medicinal and edible homologous gifts from nature to us. Edible fungal polysaccharides (EFPs) are a variety of bioactive macromolecular which isolated from fruiting bodies, mycelia or fermentation broths of edible or medicinal fungus. Increasing researches have confirmed that EFPs possess multiple biological activities both in vitro and in vivo settings, including antioxidant, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, anti-tumor, hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, and regulating intestinal flora activities. As a result, they have emerged as a prominent focus in the healthcare, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. Fungal EFPs have safe, non-toxic, biodegradable, and biocompatible properties with low immunogenicity, bioadhesion ability, and antibacterial activities, presenting diverse potential applications in the food industries, cosmetic, biomedical, packaging, and new materials. Moreover, varying raw materials, extraction, purification, chemical modification methods, and culture conditions can result in variances in the structure and biological activities of EFPs. The purpose of this review is to provide comprehensively and systematically organized information on the structure, modification, biological activities, and potential applications of EFPs to support their therapeutic effects and health functions. This review provides new insights and a theoretical basis for prospective investigations and advancements in EFPs in fields such as medicine, food, and new materials.

Abstract
Environmental toxicants are chemical substances capable to impair environmental quality and exert adverse effects on humans and other animals. The main routes of exposure to these pollutants are through the respiratory tract, skin, and oral ingestion. When ingested orally, they will encounter trillions of microorganisms that live in a community - the gut microbiota (GM). While pollutants can disrupt the GM balance, GM plays an essential role in the metabolism and bioavailability of these chemical compounds. Under physiological conditions, strategies used by the GM for metabolism and/or excretion of xenobiotics include reductive and hydrolytic transformations, lyase and functional group transfer reactions, and enzyme-mediated functional transformations. Simultaneously, the host performs metabolic processes based mainly on conjugation, oxidation, and hydrolysis reactions. Thus, due to the broad variety of bacterial enzymes present in GM, the repertoire of microbial transformations of chemicals is considered a key component of the machinery involved in the metabolism of pollutants in humans and other mammals. Among pollutants, metals deserve special attention once contamination by metals is a worldwide problem, and their adverse effects can be observed even at very low concentrations due to their toxic properties. In this review, bidirectional interaction between lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury and the host organism and its GM will be discussed given the most recent literature, presenting an analysis of the ability of GM to alter the host organism's susceptibility to the toxic effects of heavy metals, as well as evaluating the extent to which interventions targeting the microbiota could be potential initiatives to mitigate the adverse effects resulting from poisoning by heavy metals. This study is the first to highlight the overlap between some of the bacteria found to be altered by metal exposure and the bacteria that also aid the host organism in the metabolism of these metals. This could be a key factor to determine the beneficial species able to minimize the toxicity of metals in future therapeutic approaches.

Abstract
Photoaging is widely regarded as the most significant contributor to skin aging damage. It is triggered by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light and typically manifests as dryness and the formation of wrinkles. Nutritional intervention is a viable strategy for preventing and treating skin photoaging. In previous studies, we demonstrated that α-ionone had ameliorating effects on photoaging in both epidermal keratinocytes and dermal fibroblasts. Here, we investigated the potential anti-photoaging effects of dietary α-ionone using a UVB-irradiated male C57BL/6N mouse model. Our findings provided compelling evidence that dietary α-ionone alleviates wrinkle formation, skin dryness, and epidermal thickening in chronic UVB-exposed mice. α-Ionone accumulated in mouse skin after 14 weeks of dietary intake of α-ionone. α-Ionone increased collagen density and boosted the expression of collagen genes, while attenuating the UVB-induced increase of matrix metalloproteinase genes in the skin tissues. Furthermore, α-ionone suppressed the expression of senescence-associated secretory phenotypes and reduced the expression of the senescence marker p21 and DNA damage marker p53 in the skin of UVB-irradiated mice. Transcriptome sequencing results showed that α-ionone modifies gene expression profiles of skin. Multiple pathway enrichment analyses on both the differential genes and the entire genes revealed that α-ionone significantly affects multiple physiological processes and signaling pathways associated with skin health and diseases, of which the p53 signaling pathway may be the key signaling pathway. Taken together, our findings reveal that dietary α-ionone intervention holds promise in reducing the risks of skin photoaging, offering a potential strategy to address skin aging concerns.

Abstract
Fructus mori polysaccharide (FMP) has a variety of biological activities. In this study, the results showed that FMP alleviated hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, hyperlipidemia, endotoxemia, and high metabolic inflammation levels in type 2 diabetic (T2DM) mice. Next, it was found that the above beneficial effects of FMP on diabetic mice were significantly attenuated after antibiotics eliminated intestinal microbiota (IM) of mice. In addition, FMP suppressed intestinal inflammation and oxidative stress levels by inhibiting the activation of the TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB pathway, and indirectly upregulated the expression of the tight junction proteins Claudin-1, Occludin, and Zonula occlusionn-1 (ZO-1) to repair the intestinal barrier. Interestingly, the protective effect of FMP on the intestinal barrier was also attributed to its regulation of IM. The 16S rRNA and Spearman correlation analysis showed that FMP could repair the intestinal barrier to improve T2DM by remodeling specific IM, especially by significantly inhibiting 93.66 % of endotoxin-producing Shigella and promoting the proliferation of probiotic Allobaculum and Bifidobacterium by 16.31 % and 19.07 %, respectively. This study provided a theoretical support for the application of FMP as a novel probiotic in functional foods for diabetes.

It enters the human and animal bodies through the respiratory and digestive tracts, following which it tends to accumulate in different organs, thereby seriously affecting human and animal health, as well as hampering social and economic development. Cd exposure can alter the composition of intestinal microbiota. In addition, it can damage the peripheral organs by causing the translocation of intestinal microbiota. However, the relationship between translocation-induced changes in the composition of microbiome in the blood and metabolic changes remains unclear. In the present study, we investigated the effects of Cd exposure on microbiota and serum metabolism in rats by omics analysis. The results demonstrated that Cd exposure disrupted the balance between the blood and intestinal flora in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats, with a significant increase in gut microbiota (Clostridia_UCG_014, NK4A214_group) and blood microbiome (Corynebacterium, Muribaculaceae). However, Cd exposure caused the translocation of Corynebacterium and Muribaculaceae from the gut into the blood. In addition, Cd exposure was associated with the up-regulation of serum indoxyl sulfate, phenyl sulfate, and p-cresol sulfate; down-regulation of δ-tocopherol and L-glutamine; and changes in blood microbiome and metabolites. In conclusion, we identified novel metabolic biomarkers for Cd toxicity, which will also expand our understanding of the role of blood microbiome in Cd-induced injury.

Abstract
The gut microbiome is a complex biological community that deeply affects various aspects of human health, including dietary intake, disease progression, drug metabolism, and immune system regulation. Edible mushroom polysaccharides (EMPs) are bioactive fibers derived from mushrooms that possess a range of beneficial properties, including anti-tumor, antioxidant, antiviral, hypoglycemic, and immunomodulatory effects. Studies have demonstrated that EMPs are resistant to human digestive enzymes and serve as a crucial source of energy for the gut microbiome, promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria. EMPs also positively impact human health by modulating the composition of the gut microbiome. This review discusses the extraction and purification processes of EMPs, their potential to improve health conditions by regulating the composition of the gut microbiome, and their application prospects. Furthermore, this paper provides valuable guidance and recommendations for future studies on EMPs consumption in disease management.

Abstract
Lonicera japonica Thunb. is a widely distributed plant with ornamental, economic, edible, and medicinal values. L. japonica is a phytoantibiotic with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and a potent therapeutic effect on various infectious diseases. The anti-diabetic, anti-Alzheimer's disease, anti-depression, antioxidative, immunoregulatory, anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, anti-gout, and anti-alcohol-addiction effects of L. japonica can also be explained by bioactive polysaccharides isolated from this plant. Several researchers have determined the molecular weight, chemical structure, and monosaccharide composition and ratio of L. japonica polysaccharides by water extraction and alcohol precipitation, enzyme-assisted extraction (EAE) and chromatography. This article searched in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, Flora of China, Web of Science, PubMed, and CNKI databases within the last 12 years, using "Lonicera. japonica polysaccharides", "Lonicera. japonica Thunb. polysaccharides", and "Honeysuckle polysaccharides" as the key word, systematically reviewed the extraction and purification methods, structural characteristics, structure-activity relationship, and health benefits of L. japonica polysaccharides to provide insights for future studies. Further, we elaborated on the potential applications of L. japonica polysaccharides in the food, medicine, and daily chemical industry, such as using L. japonica as raw material to make lozenges, soy sauce and toothpaste, etc. This review will be a useful reference for the further optimization of functional products developed from L. japonica polysaccharides.
