Abstract
Graphene oxide-silver poly(vinylidene fluoride) membranes (PVDF@GO-Ag) were successfully synthesized by the electrospinning method, which exhibited a high catalytic activity using the hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) as a model reaction in a batch reaction study. The hybrid membranes doped with 1 wt% GO and 2 wt% Ag (PVDF-1-2) exhibited the most desired performance for the catalytic reduction of 4-NP. Importantly, PVDF-1-2 exhibited excellent cycling stability in 10 catalytic cycle tests and was highly amenable to separation. This property effectively addresses the significant challenges associated with the practical application of nanocatalysts. Furthermore, density-functional theory (DFT) calculations have demonstrated that the GO-Ag nanocomposites exhibit the strongest adsorption capacity for 4-NP- when a specific ratio of GO and Ag is achieved, accompanied by the loading of Ag nanoclusters onto GO. Additionally, the study demonstrated that an increase in temperature significantly accelerated the reaction rate, in line with the van't Hoff rule. This study provides an effective and environmentally friendly solution for the treatment of 4-NP in wastewater.

Abstract
The pressing need for effective methods to separate oil and water in oily wastewater has spurred the development of innovative solutions. This work presents the creation and evaluation of a Janus nanofibrous membrane, also known as the Liquid Diode, developed using electrospinning (e-spinning) and buoyancy-assisted hydrothermal techniques. The membrane features a unique structure: one side is composed of PVDF nanofibers embedded with a GO/TiO2 composite, exhibiting in-air superhydrophobic and superoleophilic properties, while the reverse side consists of PVDF nanofibers with a ZnO nanorod array, demonstrating in-air superhydrophilic and underwater (UW) superoleophobic properties. This distinct asymmetric wettability enables the membrane to effectively separate both water-in-oil (w-in-o) and oil-in-water (o-in-w) emulsions, achieving an impressive liquid flux and separation efficiency (SEff). The in-air superhydrophobic side of the Janus nanofibrous membrane achieves a maximum oil flux (Fo) of 3506 ± 250 L m-2 h-1, while the in-air superhydrophilic side achieves a maximum water flux (Fw) of 1837 ± 150 L m-2 h-1, with SEff exceeding 98% for both sides. Furthermore, the Janus nanofibrous membrane maintained reliable mechanical stability after 10 cycles of sandpaper abrasion test and demonstrated excellent chemical stability when subjected to acidic, alkaline, cold water and hot water conditions for 24 h. These properties, combined with its ability in breaking down of organic contaminants (98% ± 2% in 210 min) and pharmaceutical contaminants (97% ± 2% in 210 min) under visible light, highlight its photocatalytic potential. Additionally, the membrane's antifouling and antibacterial properties suggest long-term and sustainable use in wastewater treatment applications. The synergistic combination of these superior properties positions the Janus nanofibrous membrane as a promising solution for addressing complex challenges in wastewater treatment and environmental remediation.

Abstract
This study introduces an innovative approach to enhancing membrane distillation (MD) performance by developing bead-containing superhydrophobic sulfonated polyethersulfone (SPES) nanofibers with S-MWCNTs. By leveraging SPES's inherent hydrophobicity and thermal stability, combined with a nanostructured fibrous configuration, we engineered beads designed to optimize the MD process for water purification applications. Here, oxidized hydrophobic S-MWCNTs were dispersed in a SPES solution at concentrations of 0.5% and 1.0% by weight. These bead membranes are fabricated using a novel electrospinning technique, followed by a post-treatment with the hydrophobic polyfluorinated grafting agent to augment nanofiber membrane surface properties, thereby achieving superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle (WCA) of 145 ± 2° and a higher surface roughness of 512 nm. The enhanced membrane demonstrated a water flux of 87.3 Lm-2 h-1 and achieved nearly 99% salt rejection efficiency at room temperature, using a 3 wt% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution as the feed. The results highlight the potential of superhydrophobic SPES nanofiber beads in revolutionizing MD technology, offering a scalable, efficient, and robust membrane for salt rejection.

Abstract
In this study, a novel proton-conducting polymer electrolyte membrane based on a mixture of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) (1:1) mixed with different ratios of graphene oxide (GO) and plasma-treated was successfully synthesized. Dielectric barrier dielectric (DBD) plasma was used to treat the prepared samples at various dose rates (2, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 9 min) and at fixed power input (2 kV, 50 kHz). The treated samples (PVA/PVP:GO wt%) were soaked in a solution of styrene and tetrahydrofuran (70:30 wt%) with 5 × 10-3 g of benzoyl peroxide as an initiator in an oven at 60 °C for 12 h and then sulfonated to create protonic membranes (PVA/PVP-g-PSSA:GO). The impacts of graphene oxide (GO) on the physical, chemical, and electrochemical properties of plasma-treated PVA/PVP-g-PSSA:x wt% GO membranes (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3) were investigated using different techniques. SEM results showed a better dispersion of nanocomposite-prepared membranes; whereas the AFM results showed an increase in total roughness with increasing the content of GO. FTIR spectra provide more information about the structural variation arising from the grafting and sulfonation processes to confirm their occurrence. The X-ray diffraction pattern showed that the PVA/PVP-g-PSSA:x wt% GO composite is semi-crystalline. As the level of GO mixing rises, the crystallinity of the mixes decreases. According to the TGA curve, the PVA/PVP-g-PSSA:x wt% GO membranes are chemically stable up to 180 °C which is suitable for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Water uptake (WU) was also measured and found to decrease from 87.6 to 63.3% at equilibrium with increasing GO content. Ion exchange capacity (IEC) was calculated, and the maximum IEC value was 1.91 meq/g for the PVA/PVP-g-PSSA: 0.3 wt% GO composite membrane. At room temperature, the maximum proton conductivity was 98.9 mS/cm for PVA/PVP-g-PSSA: 0.3 wt% GO membrane. In addition, the same sample recorded a methanol permeability of 1.03 × 10-7 cm2/s, which is much less than that of Nafion NR-212 (1.63 × 10-6 cm2/s). These results imply potential applications for modified polyelectrolytic membranes in fuel cell technology.

Abstract
Polymeric membranes offer straightforward modification methods that make industry scaling affordable and easy; however, these materials are hydrophobic, prone to fouling, and vulnerable to extreme operating conditions. Various attempts were made in this study to fix the challenges in using polymeric membranes and create mixed-matrix membrane (MMMs) with improved properties and hydrophilicity by adding titanium dioxide (TiO2) and pore-forming agents to hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The PVDF mixed-matrix ultrafiltration membranes in this study were made using the non-solvent phase inversion approach which is a simple and effective method for increasing the hydrophilic nature of membranes. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as pore-forming chemicals were created. Pure water flux, BSA flux, and BSA rejection were calculated to evaluate the mixed-matrix membrane's efficiency. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution was employed in this study to examine the protein rejection ability. Increases in hydrophilicity, viscosity, and flux in pure water and BSA solution were achieved using PVP and PEG additives. The PVDF membrane's hydrophilicity was raised with the addition of TiO2, showing an increased contact angle to 71°. The results show that the PVDF-PVP-TiO2 membrane achieved its optimum water flux of 97 L/(m2h) while the PVDF-PEG-TiO2 membrane rejected BSA at a rate greater than 97%. The findings demonstrate that use of a support or additive improved filtration performance compared to a pristine polymeric membrane by increasing its hydrophilicity.

Abstract
In this study, polyamide (PA) thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration membranes were fabricated via interfacial polymerization on cellulose acetate (CA)/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) support layers. Several types of CA/PVDF supports were prepared via the phase inversion method. With increasing CA, the PVDF membrane surface pore size decreased and hydrophilicity increased. The effect of the support properties on the performance and formation mechanism of PA films was systematically investigated via an interfacial polymerization (IP) process. The permselectivity of the resulting TFC membranes was evaluated using a MgSO4 solution. The results show that the desired polyamide TFC membrane exhibited excellent water flux (6.56 L/(m2·h·bar)) and bivalent salt ion rejection (>97%). One aim of this study is to explore how the support of CA/PVDF influences the IP process and the performance of PA film.

Abstract
Electrospun nanofibrous constructs based on nanoparticles and biopolymers have recently been used in tissue engineering because of their similarity to the extracellular matrix in nature. In this study, electrospun chitosan-carbon quantum dot-titanium dioxide-graphene oxide (CS-CQD-TiO2-GO) nanofibrous mats were synthesized for use as wound dressings by the electrospinning method. To increase the biodegradation rate and water resistance, the fabricated nanofibrous mats were cross-linked. SEM images showed a uniform and coherent structure of CS-CQD-TiO2-GO nanocomposites and CS-CQD-TiO2-GO electrospun nanofibers mats. FTIR analysis, XRD pattern, SEM mapping, and EDS spectrum demonstrate the accuracy of the synthesis as well as the elemental and chemical structure of the nanofibrous mat. The water contact angle indicated that the nanofibrous mat had a hydrophilic property, which is essential for controlling wound exudates. The tensile strength and elongation tests showed that the nanofibrous mat has suitable mechanical properties for wound dressing, including significant flexibility and strength. Interestingly, antimicrobial testing illustrated that the fabricated nanofibrous mat had antibacterial activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Appropriate cell viability and cytocompatibility of treated mouse fibroblast NIH3T3 cells with the nanofibrous mat were determined using an MTT assay. The animal study results confirmed the proper potential of the nanofibrous mat in wound dressing applications.

Abstract
Although membrane distillation (MD) is a promising technology for water desalination and industrial wastewater treatment, the MD process is not widely applied in the global water industry due to the lack of a suitable membrane for the MD process. The design and appropriate manufacture are the most important factors for MD membrane optimization. The well-designed porous structure, superhydrophobic surface, and pore-wetting prevention of the membrane are vital properties of the MD membrane. Nowadays, electrospinning that is capable of manufacturing membranes with superhydrophobic or omni phobic properties is considered a promising technology. Electrospun nanofibrous membranes (ENMs) possess the characteristics of cylindrical morphology, re-entrant structure, and easy-shaping for a specific purpose, benefiting the membrane design and modification. Based on that, this review investigates the current state and future progress of the superhydrophobic, multi-layer, and omniphobic ENMs manufactured with various structural designs for seawater desalination and wastewater purification. We expect that this paper will provide some recommendations and guidance for further fabrication research and the configuration design of ENMs in the MD process for seawater desalination and wastewater purification.

Abstract
Electrospinning, being a versatile and straightforward method to produce nanofiber membranes, has shown significant advancement in recent years. On account of the unique properties such as high surface area, high porosity, mechanical strength, and controllable surface morphologies, electrospun nanofiber membranes have been found to have a great potential in many disciplines. Pure electrospun fiber mats modified with different techniques of surface modification and additive incorporation have exhibited enhanced properties compared to traditional membranes and are even better than the as-prepared electrospun membranes. In this review, we have summarized recently developed electrospun nanohybrids fabricated by the incorporation of functional specific nanosized additives to be used in various water remediation membrane techniques. The adsorption, filtration, photocatalytic, and bactericidal capabilities of the hybrid membranes in removing common major water pollutants such as metal ions, dyes, oils, and biological pollutants have been discussed. Finally, an outlook on the future research pathways to fill the gaps existing in water remediation have been suggested.

Abstract
In the present work, a novel mixed matrix cation exchange membrane composed of sulfonated polyether sulfone (SPES), N-phthaloyl chitosan (NPHCs) and MIL-101(Fe) was synthesized using response surface methodology (RSM). The electrochemical and physical properties of the membrane, such as ion exchange capacity, water content, morphology, contact angle, fixed ion concentration and thermal stability were investigated. The RSM based on the Box-Behnken design (BBD) model was employed to simulate and evaluate the influence of preparation conditions on the properties of CEMs. The regression model was validated via the analysis of variance (ANOVA) which exhibited a high reliability and accuracy of the results. Moreover, the experimental data have a good fit and high reproducibility with the predicted results according to the regression analysis. The embedding of MIL-101(Fe) nanoparticles contributed to the improvement of ion selective separation by forming hydrogen bonds with the polymer network in the membrane. The optimum synthesis parameters such as degree of sulfonation (DS), the content of SPES and NPHCs and the content of MIL-101(Fe) were acquired to be 30%, 85:15 and 2%, respectively, and the corresponding desalination rate of the CEMs improved to 136% while the energy consumption reduced to 90%. These results revealed that the RSM was a promising strategy for optimizing the preparation factors of CEMs and other similar multi-response optimization studies.

Abstract
Superhydrophobic surfaces with switchable adhesive/anti-adhesive performances are highly desired but still challenging. Herein, by loading porous poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) spheres on a shape memory polylactic acid (PLLA) film, a quasi-superhydrophobic surface of composite film (PVDF@PLLA) with the ability to tailor its surface structures/composition and related adhesive behaviors was fabricated. The as-prepared surface is covered by porous PVDF spheres. The combination of hydrophobicity of PVDF and hierarchical roughness resulted from porous spheres contributing to the high contact angle and low sliding angle, corresponding to Cassie state and lotus leaves effect. Upon uniaxial or biaxial tension, the distance among hydrophobic spheres is so high that more and more hydrophilic defects (PLLA film) have been exposed to water droplets, accounting for the quasi-superhydrophobic surface with a higher sliding angle. This is the reason for the Wenzel state and rose petals effect. After heating, PLLA film recovers to its original state. The porous PVDF spheres cover the whole film again, leading to the enhanced mobility of water droplets on the surface. The transition between the rose petals effect and the lotus leaves effect is programmable and reversible. Our result provides a novel strategy to tailor adhesive behaviors by combining (quasi-)superhydrophobic surface with shape memory effect.

Abstract
In the past few decades, the role of nanotechnology has expanded into environmental remediation applications. In this regard, nanofibers have been reported for various applications in water treatment and air filtration. Nanofibers are fibers of polymeric origin with diameters in the nanometer to submicron range. Electrospinning has been the most widely used method to synthesize nanofibers with tunable properties such as high specific surface area, uniform pore size, and controlled hydrophobicity. These properties of nanofibers make them highly sought after as adsorbents, photocatalysts, electrode materials, and membranes. In this review article, a basic description of the electrospinning process is presented. Subsequently, the role of different operating parameters in the electrospinning process and precursor polymeric solution is reviewed with respect to their influence on nanofiber properties. Three key areas of nanofiber application for water treatment (desalination, heavy-metal removal, and contaminant of emerging concern (CEC) remediation) are explored. The latest research in these areas is critically reviewed. Nanofibers have shown promising results in the case of membrane distillation, reverse osmosis, and forward osmosis applications. For heavy-metal removal, nanofibers have been able to remove trace heavy metals due to the convenient incorporation of specific functional groups that show a high affinity for the target heavy metals. In the case of CECs, nanofibers have been utilized not only as adsorbents but also as materials to localize and immobilize the trace contaminants, making further degradation by photocatalytic and electrochemical processes more efficient. The key issues with nanofiber application in water treatment include the lack of studies that explore the role of the background water matrix in impacting the contaminant removal performance, regeneration, and recyclability of nanofibers. Furthermore, the end-of-life disposal of nanofibers needs to be explored. The availability of more such studies will facilitate the adoption of nanofibers for water treatment applications.

Abstract
A Bubbling and Vacuum-enhanced direct contact membrane distillation (BVDCMD) is proposed to improve the water production rate of the direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD-)based seawater desalination process. Its heat and mass transfer mechanism are theoretically analyzed, and a CFD model is established, which is verified by the published data. Four types of the noncondensable gas, “O2,” “air,” “N2,” and “H2,” are adopted as the bubbling gas, and their process enhancements under different pressure of permeate side, temperature, and NaCl concentration of feed side and flow velocities are investigated. The results show that the permeate flux increased remarkably with the decrease in the viscosity of the bubbling gas, and hence, “H2” is the best option for the bubbling gas, with the permeate flux being enhanced by 144.11% and the effective heat consumption being increased by 20.81% on average. The effective water production rate of BVDCMD is predicted to be 42.38% more than that of DCMD, proving its feasibility in the seawater desalination.

Abstract
Membrane distillation (MD) is a thermal technology for the desalination process that requires a hydrophobic microporous membrane to ensure that the membrane can maintain the liquid-vapor interface. This work aims to enhance the water permeation flux of the previously coated membrane by modifying the surface of the polytetrafluoroethylene hollow fiber (PTFE HF) membrane with a selected non-solvent such as acetone, cyclohexanone, and ethanol in low-density polyethylene as a polymeric coating solution. However, the modification using acetone and cyclohexanone solvents was unsuccessful because a reduction in membrane hydrophobicity was observed. The modified PTFE HF membrane with ethanol content exhibits high wetting resistance with a high water contact angle, which can withstand pore wetting during the direct contact MD process. Since MD operates under a lower operating temperature range (50-90 °C) compared to the conventional distillation, we herein demonstrated that higher flux could be obtained at 7.26 L m-2 h-1. Thus, the process is economically feasible because of lower energy consumption. Performance evaluation of the modified PTFE HF membrane showed a high rejection of 99.69% for sodium chloride (NaCl), indicating that the coated membrane preferentially allowed only water vapor to pass through.

Abstract
Microporous membrane with a hydrophobic surface, high porosity and narrow pore size distribution is the ideal membrane distillation (MD) membrane. The electrospun membranes for MD is a new type and effective way to seawater desalination. Herein, a novel polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/ tetrabutylammonium chloride (TBAC) electrospun nanofiber membrane (ENMs) fabricated apply to for direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD). Combine with the spinning condition, the characteristic and content of TBAC significant effect on the multi morphology structure of nanofiber. Therefore, the porous structure and morphology of PVDF/TBAC ENMs can be well-designed by optimizing relative humidity and TBAC concentration in spinning process, three different structure nanofiber membranes were obtained. Lab-scale setup was used to test membrane separation performance. The result indicated that the ultrafine ENMs with 0.025 mol/L TBAC presented a steady water flux of about 20.6 L/(m2 h) and a high-efficiency salt rejection rate of over 99%. PVDF/TBAC ENMs are expected to provide a solution for development of efficient water treatment membrane. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract
A novel nano/micro-structured pesticide detection card was developed by combining electrospinning and hydrophilic modification, and its feasibility for detecting different pesticides was investigated. Here, the plain and hydrophilic-modified poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) fiber mats were used for the absorption of indolyl acetate and acetylcholinesterase (AChE), respectively. By pre-treating the fiber mat with ethanol, its surface wettability was improved, thus, promoting the hydrolysis of the PCL fiber mat. Furthermore, the absorption efficiency of AChE was improved by almost two times due to the increased hydrophilicity of the modified fiber mat. Noteworthily, this self-made detection card showed a 5-fold, 2-fold, and 1.5-fold reduction of the minimum detectable concentration for carbofuran, malathion, and trichlorfon, respectively, compared to the national standard values. Additionally, it also exhibited good stability when stored at 4 °C and room temperature. The food detection test showed that this nano/micro-based detection card had better detectability than the commercial detection card. Therefore, this study offers new insights into the design of pesticide detection cards, which also broadens the application of electrospinning technique.

Abstract
Membrane distillation (MD) is an attractive technology for the separation of highly saline water used with a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) hollow fiber (HF) membrane. A hydrophobic coating of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) coats the outer surface of the PTFE membrane to resolve membrane wetting as well as increase membrane permeability flux and salt rejection, a critical problem regarding the MD process. LDPE concentrations in coating solution have been studied and optimized. Consequently, the LDPE layer altered membrane morphology by forming a fine nanostructure on the membrane surface that created a hydrophobic layer, a high roughness of membrane, and a uniform LDPE network. The membrane coated with different concentrations of LDPE exhibited high water contact angles of 135.14 ± 0.24 and 138.08 ± 0.01° for membranes M-3 and M-4, respectively, compared to the pristine membrane. In addition, the liquid entry pressure values of LDPE-incorporated PTFE HF membranes (M-1 to M-5) were higher than that of the uncoated membrane (M-0) with a small decrease in the percentage of porosity. The M-3 and M-4 membranes demonstrated higher flux values of 4.12 and 3.3 L m-2 h-1 at 70 °C, respectively. On the other hand, the water permeation flux of 1.95 L m-2 h-1 for M-5 further decreased when LDPE concentration is increased.

Abstract
Membrane distillation (MD) holds great promise for high-saline solution treatment, but it is typically impeded by the trade-off between the high mass transfer and antifouling properties of the membrane. Herein, a new MD utilized membrane with bioinspired micro/nanostructure (lotus leaf and fish gill) was constructed on commercial PP membrane, which can simultaneously enhance the permeation flux and antifouling in the hypersaline MD operation. On the basis of the classic nucleation theory and hydrodynamics simulation, the nanoscale structure can intensify the interfacial nanoscale turbulent flow and hinder the crystal deposition, which works like the fish gill. In addition, the optimized nanoscale feature size renders the membrane with the heterogeneous nucleation barrier very similar to the homogeneous system, which works like the lotus leaf and hinders the induced nucleation effectively. The microscale structure as the supporting platform of nanostructure can additionally enlarge the effective evaporative surface with superior hydrophobicity and then promote the permeation transfer through the membrane. The hybrid micro/nanostructures render the fabricated membrane with excellent high-permeation flux and significantly prolonged fouling induction time, which sheds light on a new approach for the development of ideal MD utilized membrane.

Abstract
Nanofibers are one of the most attractive materials in various applications due to their unique properties and promising characteristics for the next generation of materials in the fields of energy, environment, and health. Among the many fabrication methods, electrospinning is one of the most efficient technologies which has brought about remarkable progress in the fabrication of nanofibers with high surface area, high aspect ratio, and porosity features. However, neat nanofibers generally have low mechanical strength, thermal instability, and limited functionalities. Therefore, composite and modified structures of electrospun nanofibers have been developed to improve the advantages of nanofibers and overcome their drawbacks. The combination of electrospinning technology and high-quality nanomaterials via materials science advances as well as new modification techniques have led to the fabrication of composite and modified nanofibers with desired properties for different applications. In this review, we present the recent progress on the fabrication and applications of electrospun nanofiber composites to sketch a progress line for advancements in various categories. Firstly, the different methods for fabrication of composite and modified nanofibers have been investigated. Then, the current innovations of composite nanofibers in environmental, healthcare, and energy fields have been described, and the improvements in each field are explained in detail. The continued growth of composite and modified nanofiber technology reveals its versatile properties that offer alternatives for many of current industrial and domestic issues and applications.

Abstract
Owing to the unique structural characteristics as well as outstanding physio-chemical and electrical properties, graphene enables significant enhancement with the performance of electrospun nanofibers, leading to the generation of promising applications in electrospun-mediated sensor technologies. Electrospinning is a simple, cost-effective, and versatile technique relying on electrostatic repulsion between the surface charges to continuously synthesize various scalable assemblies from a wide array of raw materials with diameters down to few nanometers. Recently, electrospun nanocomposites have emerged as promising substrates with a great potential for constructing nanoscale biosensors due to their exceptional functional characteristics such as complex pore structures, high surface area, high catalytic and electron transfer, controllable surface conformation and modification, superior electric conductivity and unique mat structure. This review comprehends graphene-based nanomaterials (GNMs) (graphene, graphene oxide (GO), reduced GO and graphene quantum dots) impregnated electrospun polymer composites for the electro-device developments, which bridges the laboratory set-up to the industry. Different techniques in the base polymers (pre-processing methods) and surface modification methods (post-processing methods) to impregnate GNMs within electrospun polymer nanofibers are critically discussed. The performance and the usage as the electrochemical biosensors for the detection of wide range analytes are further elaborated. This overview catches a great interest and inspires various new opportunities across a wide range of disciplines and designs of miniaturized point-of-care devices.
