Abstract
In this research, silver/graphene oxide (Ag/GO) nanohybrid was first synthesized and used in production of polysulfone (PSF) ultrafiltration (UF) membranes via phase inversion method for concentrating phycocyanin (PC) and treating methylene blue (MB) dye effluent. Designing the experiment (DOE) using Box-Behnken method by Design Expert software helped to calculate the optimal values of the variables under study. The studied variables included PSF polymer concentration, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) pore-former concentration and Ag/GO nanohybrid content, which were investigated for their effects on pure water flux (PWF) and MB pigment rejection. According to the results of the DOE, the membrane containing 19.485 wt% PSF, 0.043 wt% PVP and 0.987 wt% Ag/GO was selected as the optimal membrane. Due to the high price of PC as drug, and the importance of removing MB pigment from the effluent of dyeing and textile industries, the membranes were first optimized with MB pigment and then the optimal membrane was used for concentrating PC. The results showed that PWF reaches from 40.05 L.m- 2.h- 1 (LMH) for the neat membrane to 156.73 LMH for the optimized membrane, which shows about 4 times improvement. Compared to the neat membrane, flux recovery ratio (FRR) of the optimized membrane increased by about 20% and its total fouling (Rt) decreased by about 10%. Also, the results showed that the optimized membrane can remove 81.6% of MB, as well as to reject 93.8% of PC.

Abstract
In this study, a Ti3C2 MXene@g-C3N4 composite powder (TM-CN) was prepared by the ultrasonic self-assembly method and then loaded onto a carbon nanofiber membrane by the self-assembly properties of MXene for the treatment of organic pollutants in wastewater. The characterization of the TM-CN and the C-TM-CN was conducted via X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) to ascertain the successful modification. The organic dye degradation experiments demonstrated that introducing an appropriate amount of Ti3C2 MXene resulted in the complete degradation of RhB within 60 min, three times the photocatalytic efficiency of a pure g-C3N4. The C-TM-CN exhibited the stable and outstanding photocatalytic degradation of the RhB solution over a wide range of pH values, indicating the characteristics of the photodegradation of organic pollutants in a wide range of aqueous environments. Furthermore, the results of the cyclic degradation experiments demonstrated that the C-TM-CN composite film maintained a degradation efficiency of over 85% after five cycles, thereby confirming a notable improvement in its cyclic stability. Consequently, the C-TM-CN composite film exhibits excellent photocatalytic performance and is readily recyclable, making it an auspicious eco-friendly material in water environment remediation.

Abstract
Reducing irreversible fouling in polymer membranes by integrating photocatalytic and membrane processes as the self-cleaning photocatalytic membrane is a promising candidate for improving membrane filtration performance. In this study, mixed matrix photocatalytic membranes were prepared from the combination of different morphologies ZnO-g-C3N4 heterostructure in the polymer matrix by the phase-separation method. To investigate the self-cleaning and performance properties of mixed matrix photocatalytic membranes prepared from different morphologies heterostructures, the photocatalytic membrane reactor with a visible-light source was applied. Nanoflower/nanosheet (NF/NS) ZnO-g-C3N4 photocatalytic membrane showed good self-cleaning performance owing to the high photocatalytic performance of NF/NS ZnO-g-C3N4 heterostructure by the reduction of irreversible membrane fouling, thus improving the antifouling and filtration performance of the membrane. Also, the morphology and the uniform distribution of the NF/NS ZnO-g-C3N4 heterostructure in the membrane matrix caused good hydrophilic properties, high porosity, and a more symmetrical structure in the (NF/NS) ZnO-g-C3N4 photocatalytic membrane (F4). For the F4 membrane, the permeability and rejection values increased from 40.35 L m-2 h-1 and 90.9% in the dark environment to 84.37 L m-2 h-1 and 97.4% under visible-light for dye pollutants. Accordingly, F4 had the best filtration and self-cleaning performance, which can be used as a promising visible-light photocatalytic membrane in wastewater treatment processes.

Abstract
In this study, a photocatalytic biochar-TiO2 (C-Ti) composite was prepared using lignin as carbon precursor, and blended with PVDF polymer to fabricate PVDF/C-Ti MMMs via non-solvent induced phase inversion. The prepared membrane demonstrates both 1.5 times higher initial and recovered fluxes than the similarly prepared PVDF/TiO2 membrane, suggesting the C-Ti composite can help maintain higher photodegradation efficiency and better anti-fouling performance. In addition, the comparison of PVDF/C-Ti membrane against pristine PVDF membrane show that the reversible fouling and photodegradation reversible fouling of BSA increased from 10.1% to 6.4%-35.1% and 26.6%, respectively. And the FRR of PVDF/C-Ti membrane was 62.12%, 1.8 times that of PVDF membrane. The PVDF/C-Ti membrane was also applied for lignin separation, where the rejection to sodium lignin sulfonate was maintained at about 75%, and the flux recovery ratio after UV irradiation reached 90%. The demonstrated the advantages of PVDF/C-Ti membrane in photocatalytic degradation and antifouling performance.

Abstract
Environmental pollution has become a worldwide issue. Rapid industrial and agricultural practices have increased organic contaminants in water supplies. Hence, many strategies have been developed to address this concern. In order to supply clean water for various applications, high-performance treatment technology is required to effectively remove organic and inorganic contaminants. Utilizing photocatalytic membrane reactors (PMRs) has shown promise as a viable alternative process in the water and wastewater industry due to its efficiency, low cost, simplicity, and low environmental impact. PMRs are commonly categorized into two main categories: those with the photocatalyst suspended in solution and those with the photocatalyst immobilized in/on a membrane. Herein, the working and fouling mechanisms in PMRs membranes are investigated; the interplay of fouling and photocatalytic activity and the development of fouling prevention strategies are elucidated; and the significance of photocatalysis in membrane fouling mechanisms such as pore plugging and cake layering is thoroughly explored.

Abstract
Nanomaterials filled polymers system is a simple method to produce organic/inorganic hybrid with synergistic or complementary effects. The properties of nanocomposites strongly depend on the dispersion effects of nanomaterials in the polymer and their interfaces. The optimized interface of nanocomposites would decrease the barrier height between filler and polymer for charge transfer. To avoid aggregation of metal nanoparticles and improve interfacial charge transfer, Pt nanodots filled in the non-conjugated polymer was synthesized with an in situ method. The results exhibited that the absorbance of nanocomposite covered from the visible light region to NIR (near infrared). The photo-current responses to typical visible light and 808 nm NIR were studied based on Au gap electrodes on a flexible substrate. The results showed that the size of Pt nanoparticles was about 1-2 nm and had uniformly dispersed in the polymer matrix. The resulting nanocomposite exhibited photo-current switching behavior to weak visible light and NIR. Simultaneously, the nanocomposite also showed electrical switching responses to strain applied to a certain extent. Well-dispersion of Pt nanodots in the polymer is attributable to the in situ synthesis of metal nanodots, and photo-current switching behavior is due to interface optimization to decrease barrier height between metal filler and polymer. It provided a simple way to obtain organic/inorganic hybrid with external stimuli responses and multi-functionalities.

Abstract
g-C3N4/Ag3PO4/TiO2 nanocomposite materials were loaded onto a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane using a phase inversion method to obtain a photocatalytic flat membrane for dye removal. The morphology, structure, and photocatalytic activity of the g-C3N4/Ag3PO4/TiO2 nanoparticles and composite membrane were evaluated. The g-C3N4/Ag3PO4/TiO2/PVDF membrane exhibited superior morphology, hydrophilic properties, and antifouling performance compared with the raw PVDF membrane. Four-stage filtration was performed to evaluate the self-cleaning and antifouling capacity of the g-C3N4/Ag3PO4/TiO2/PVDF membrane. Upon irradiating the composite membrane with visible light for 30 min, its irreversible fouling resistance (Rir) was low (9%), and its flux recovery rate (FRR) was high (71.0%) after five filtration cycles. The removal rate of rhodamine B (RhB) from the composite membrane under visible light irradiation reached 98.1% owing to the high photocatalytic activity of the membrane, which was superior to that of raw PVDF membrane (42.5%). A mechanism of photocatalytic composite membranes for RhB degradation was proposed. Therefore, this study is expected to broaden prospects in the field of membrane filtration technology.

Abstract
Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has attained significant research attention in energy and environmental remediation due to its excellent electronic structure, greater physical and chemical properties, and abundance. However, graphitic carbon nitride faces severe problems because of its high recombination rate and higher mass loss of the catalyst during recovery operations. This review emphasizes the methods to overcome the difficulties associated with recovery and reusability of the g-C3N4 based photocatalyst towards the redemption of pollutants present in wastewater. Different strategies like magnetic g-C3N4 based photocatalysts, immobilized photocatalytic systems, and photocatalytic membranes and their usage in photocatalytic applications are well described. Different preparation strategies of the graphic carbon nitride-based composites are elucidated. The key challenges and future perspectives of adopting these methods for photocatalytic applications are also mentioned.

Abstract
A multicomponent composite membrane (P-S-T/C) with three-phase interface heterostructure is ingeniously designed. A polydopamine (PDA)-modified conductive carbon fiber cloth (CFC) is used as the substrate. Activated poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) with titanium dioxide (TiO2) and a silicon dioxide (SiO2) aerogel are electrospun as the top layer. The three-phase interface heterostructure was formed by TiO2, conductive CFC, and the SiO2 aerogel. Its photocatalytic performance is validated by photodegradation of organic dyes in a low-oxygen (O2) water environment. On combining with the capillary condensation of a bilayer structure, P-S-T/C exhibits excellent removal capability for anionic and cationic dyes. Moreover, P-S-T/C exhibits excellent stability and recyclability under simulated sunlight. The mechanism study indicates that the separated photogenerated carriers diffuse to the composite membrane surface rapidly on the three-phase interface of P-S-T/C. The abundant O2 adsorbed on the porous SiO2 aerogel surface acts as an electron (e-)-trapping agent, which can also decrease the work function of the composite materials. Superoxide radicals (•O2 -) play a dominant role in the reaction of photodegradation supported by a free radical-trapping experiment. This work paves a way to design a membrane with photocatalytic performance by constructing the interface heterostructure.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to assess the combination of a photocatalytic TiO2-coated ZrO2 UF membrane with solar photo-Fenton treatment at circumneutral pH for the filtration and treatment of urban wastewater treatment plant (UWWTP) effluents. Photocatalytic self-cleaning properties were tested with a UWWTP effluent under irradiation in a solar simulator. Then, both the permeates and retentates from the membrane process were treated using the solar photo-Fenton treatment. The UWWTP effluent was spiked with caffeine (CAF), imidacloprid (IMI), thiacloprid (THI), carbamazepine (CBZ) and diclofenac (DCF) at an initial concentration of 100 µg/L each. Retention on the membrane of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa (P. Aeruginosa), a Gram-negative bacterial strain, was tested with and without irradiation. It was demonstrated that filtration of a certain volume of UWWTP effluent in the dark is possible, and the original conditions can then be recovered after illumination. The photocatalytic membrane significantly reduces the turbidity of the UWWTP effluent, significantly increasing the degradation efficiency of the subsequent solar photo-Fenton treatment. The results showed that the membrane allowed consistent retention of P. Aeruginosa at an order of magnitude of 1 × 103–1 × 104 CFU/mL.

Abstract
AbstractWe report on the immobilization of carbon nitride (CN) materials and β-Bi2O3 on electrospun polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) fiber substrates using a dispersion based dip coating process. The spinning process was optimized by variation of several parameters to finally obtain continuous droplet-free fibers at 15 kV and a flow rate of 50 µL min−1 using a needle with 1.2 mm diameter. The polymer substrates were coated with the β-Bi2O3 and CN materials, which were characterized using SEM and applied in the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants such as Rhodamine B (RhB), ethinyl estradiol (EE2) and triclosan using visible light irradiation. The pollutants were degraded with up to 50% of the initial concentration within 8 h. Different amounts of CN material were deposited to evaluate the photocatalytic activity per mass. Immobilized CN materials were shown to be of higher activity (2.0 × 10−10 mol mg−1 min−1) than β-Bi2O3 (1.3 × 10−10 mol mg−1 min−1) and the mixture CN/β-Bi2O3 (1.6 × 10−10 mol mg−1 min−1). Reference samples with CN particles partially embedded in the polymer fleece showed minor degradaton rates (18% RhB degradation within 8 h) as compared to coated fiber substrates (47% RhB degradation within 8 h). Minor leaching of the carbon nitride material and no leaching of β-Bi2O3 occurs as shown by NPOC (non purgeable organic carbon) and ICP-MS measurements.

Abstract
Carbon nitride (CN)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) photocatalytic composite membrane (PCM) is considered as a promising candidate to improve the anti-fouling characteristic of conventional PVDF membrane and overcome the difficulty encountered during recovery of powder catalyst simultaneously. However, the effects of differently-modified CN on PCM and its mechanism are still unclear. In this study, bulk-CN (BCN), carbon defects CN (CCN), nitrogen defect CN (DCN), mesoporous CN (MCN), and nitrogen-rich CN (NCN) were incorporated into PVDF by phase inversion method. The influence of changes in the physical and chemical properties of CN, including hydrophilic groups, photocatalytic activity, and particle size, on the permeability, anti-fouling characteristic, and photocatalytic self-cleaning activity of CN/PVDF was systematically analyzed. The mechanism of excellent performance of PCM was revealed by experimental test and theoretical calculation. The flux of PCM was significantly improved by increasing the hydrophilic group on modified CN. However, the differences in particle size and interaction between different types of modified CN and PVDF chains endowed the CN/PVDF with different porosity. DCN/PVDF showed high porosity and hydrophilicity, leading to high water flux and rejection rate of 293.6 L (m2 h)-1 and 90.1%, respectively. Compared to pure PVDF, the flux recovery rate of DCN30/PVDF increased by 27.6%, and the irreversible fouling decreased from 36.9% to 9.2%. The modified CN/PVDF showed excellent photocatalytic activity for the removal of cefotaxime (CFX) and E. coli. Owing to the narrow band gap of DCN, large specific surface area, and low photogenerated carrier recombination rate, the CFX removal rate reached 99% in 2 h, and E. coli inactivation achieved 3.7 log within 4 h via DCN30/PVDF.

Abstract
Semiconducting membranes integrated with nanomaterials have placed themselves in new emerging researches tremendously for seawater desalination, oil-water separation, disinfection, removal of inorganic as well as organic pollutants. Howbeit, only nanoparticles unified membranes show quite a lot lags in their performance, although some of these particles associated with the demerits of high cost. In contrast, graphitic carbon nitride incorporated membranes offered improved aforementioned properties corresponding to absolute essential qualities such as cost-effective, environmentally friendly, easy-to-operate, green manufacturing, anti-fouling, and low energy consumption. Moreover, their high mechanical strength, high stability against harsh environment and long-term utilization without flux reduction are strong plus. Even though there are some undeniable downsides of these membranes in real world applications as bulk synthesis, consistent dispersion of graphitic carbon nitride, low photocatalytic efficiency etc. Accordingly, in the present article, these frailties of the membranes having graphitic carbon nitride as a filler and their respective synthesis procedures and properties are discussed. A comprehensive analysis over the application of semiconducting graphitic carbon nitride incorporated membranes with and without special surface modification; and exploration of the future challenges and difficulties associated to these membranes are also reviewed. Consequently, the current article provides brief overview about graphitic carbon nitride integrated composite membranes as well as their applications, and it finished up with new thoughts of further improvements/modifications to overcome their shortcomings in actual environmental conditions.

Abstract
Novel polyvinylidene fluoride/TiO2/UiO-66-NH2 (PVDF/TiUN) membranes were produced by the delay phase separation method via introducing the TiO2/UiO-66-NH2 (TiUN) nanocomposite into PVDF casting solution. Interconnection of TiO2 and UiO-66-NH2 improved photocatalysis capacity and endowed PVDF/TiUN membranes with self-cleaning capability. Quantitative measurements showed that, firstly, PVDF/TiUN membranes exhibited improved photodegradation kinetics and efficiency (up to 88.1%) to Rhodamine B (RhB). Secondly, the performances of bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection and permeation of PVDF/TiUN membranes outperformed those of other check samples, indicating enhanced hydrophilicity. Thirdly, rejection rate of BSA reached a breathtaking 98.14% and flux recovery ratio (FRR) of BSA reached a breathtaking 95.37%. Thus, given their excellent anti-contamination property and separation performance, the PVDF/TiUN membrane is very likely to be a novel water treatment membrane.

Abstract
The design of sustainable and efficient materials for efficient energy storage and degradation of environmental pollutants (specifically organic dyes) is a matter of major interest these days. For this purpose, cerium- and ytterbium-based GO/g-C3N4/Fe2O3 composites have been synthesized to explore their properties, especially in charge storage devices such as supercapacitors, and also as photocatalysts for the degradation of carcinogenic dyes from the environment. Physicochemical studies have been carried out using XRD, FTIR, SEM, and BET techniques. Electrochemical techniques (cyclic voltammetry, galvanic charge discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) have been employed to measure super-capacitance and EDLC properties. Results show that the gravimetric capacitance calculated from GCD results is 219 Fg−1 for ytterbium- and 169 Fg−1 for cerium-based nanocomposites at the current density of 1 A/g and scan rate of 2 mV/sec. The specific capacitance calculated for the ytterbium-based nanocomposite is 189 Fg−1 as compared to 125 Fg−1 for the cerium-based material. EIS results pointed to an enhanced resistance offered by cerium-based nanocomposites as compared to that of ytterbium, which can be assumed with the difference in particle size, as confirmed from structural studies including XRD. From obtained results, ytterbium oxide-based GO/g-C3N4/Fe2O3 is proven to be a better electro-catalyst as compared to cerium-based nanocomposites. Photocatalytic results are also in agreement with electrochemical results, as the degradation efficiency of ytterbium oxide-based GO/g-C3N4/Fe2O3 (67.11 and 83.50% for rhodamine B and methylene blue dyes) surpasses values observed for cerium-based GO/g-C3N4/Fe2O3 (63.08 and 70.61%).
