Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the influence of menstrual-cycle (MC) phase on objective sleep and perceived recovery following high- (HIT) and low-intensity training (LIT) in endurance-trained women. METHODS Fifteen naturally menstruating, endurance-trained women completed standardized HIT and LIT sessions during the early follicular phase (EFP), ovulatory phase (OP), and midluteal phase (MLP) of 2 MCs. Overnight sleep was monitored using a Somnofy sleep monitor after each training session, and perceived recovery was assessed after 24 hours using self-report scales. MC phases were determined using the 3-step method, and noneumenorrheic MCs were retrospectively excluded from analysis. RESULTS MC phase had a main effect on wake after sleep onset (P ≤ .001), with higher values in MLP (33 [22] min) than EFP (22 [19] min, P = .043) and OP (14 [9] min, P = .001), sleep efficiency (P = .033), with lower values in MLP (87% [6%]) than OP (90% [8%], P = .047), and light sleep (P = .023) with higher values in MLP (59% [6%]) than EFP (54% [7%], P = .037). Session type had a main effect on perceived recovery (P < .018) and perceived muscle soreness (P = .007), indicating lower perceived recovery and higher perceived muscle soreness following HIT compared to LIT (P < .001, P = .018, respectively). No interactions were found between MC phase and session type for any of the measured variables. CONCLUSIONS Objective sleep quality, but not perceived recovery, was influenced by MC phase, as indicated by small impairments to multiple indices of objective sleep during MLP. There were no interactions between MC phase and session type, indicating that the effect of MC on sleep and recovery is consistent regardless of session type.

Abstract
Most studies about the menstrual cycle are laboratory-based, in small samples, with infrequent sampling, and limited to young individuals. Here, we use wearable and diary-based data to investigate menstrual phase and age effects on finger temperature, sleep, heart rate (HR), physical activity, physical symptoms, and mood. A total of 116 healthy females, without menstrual disorders, were enrolled: 67 young (18-35 years, reproductive stage) and 53 midlife (42-55 years, late reproductive to menopause transition). Over one menstrual cycle, participants wore Oura ring Gen2 to detect finger temperature, HR, heart rate variability (root mean square of successive differences between normal heartbeats [RMSSD]), steps, and sleep. They used luteinizing hormone (LH) kits and daily rated sleep, mood, and physical symptoms. A cosinor rhythm analysis was applied to detect menstrual oscillations in temperature. The effect of menstrual cycle phase and group on all other variables was assessed using hierarchical linear models. Finger temperature followed an oscillatory trend indicative of ovulatory cycles in 96 participants. In the midlife group, the temperature rhythm's mesor was higher, but period, amplitude, and number of days between menses and acrophase were similar in both groups. In those with oscillatory temperatures, HR was lowest during menses in both groups. In the young group only, RMSSD was lower in the late-luteal phase than during menses. Overall, RMSSD was lower, and number of daily steps was higher, in the midlife group. No significant menstrual cycle changes were detected in wearable-derived or self-reported measures of sleep efficiency, duration, wake-after-sleep onset, sleep onset latency, or sleep quality. Mood positivity was higher around ovulation, and physical symptoms manifested during menses. Temperature and HR changed across the menstrual cycle; however, sleep measures remained stable in these healthy young and midlife individuals. Further work should investigate over longer periods whether individual- or cluster-specific sleep changes exist, and if a buffering mechanism protects sleep from physiological changes across the menstrual cycle.

Abstract
Background: Sleep and affective states are closely intertwined. Nevertheless, previous methods to evaluate sleep-affect associations have been limited by poor ecological validity, with a few studies examining temporal or dynamic interactions in naturalistic settings. Objectives: First, to update and integrate evidence from studies investigating the reciprocal relationship between daily sleep and affective phenomena (mood, affect, and emotions) through ambulatory and prospective monitoring. Second, to evaluate differential patterns based on age, affective disorder diagnosis (bipolar, depression, and anxiety), and shift work patterns on day-to-day sleep-emotion dyads. Third, to summarise the use of wearables, actigraphy, and digital tools in assessing longitudinal sleep-affect associations. Method: A comprehensive PRISMA-compliant systematic review was conducted through the EMBASE, Ovid MEDLINE(R), PsycINFO, and Scopus databases. Results: Of the 3024 records screened, 121 studies were included. Bidirectionality of sleep-affect associations was found (in general) across affective disorders (bipolar, depression, and anxiety), shift workers, and healthy participants representing a range of age groups. However, findings were influenced by the sleep indices and affective dimensions operationalised, sampling resolution, time of day effects, and diagnostic status. Conclusions: Sleep disturbances, especially poorer sleep quality and truncated sleep duration, were consistently found to influence positive and negative affective experiences. Sleep was more often a stronger predictor of subsequent daytime affect than vice versa. The strength and magnitude of sleep-affect associations were more robust for subjective (self-reported) sleep parameters compared to objective (actigraphic) sleep parameters.

Abstract
Menstruating individuals experience an increased risk for sleep and affective disorders, attributed in part to monthly oscillations in sex hormones. Emotional functioning and sleep continuity worsens during the perimenstrual phase of the menstrual cycle. This study examined the interactive effects of sleep, menstrual phase, and emotion in healthy women. Participants (N = 51, 43% Caucasian) aged 18-35 (m = 24 years) completed actigraphy and daily sleep/emotion diaries over two menstrual cycles (m days = 51.29). Diary and actigraphic total wake time at night (TWT) and daily ratings of positive and negative affect were compared across four phases of the menstrual cycle: perimenstrual, mid-follicular, periovulatory, and mid-luteal. Relationships between phase, sleep, and emotion were estimated using multistep hierarchical linear modelling. Mean menstrual cycle length was 28.61 ± 2.69 days. Perimenstrual phase positively predicted anger (p < 0.001) but no other emotions. Additionally, the perimenstrual phase predicted higher rates of TWT, such that diary TWT was 8-16 min longer during the perimenstrual (m = 67.54, SE = 3.37) compared to other phases (p < 0.001). Actigraphic TWT was also increased by 4-7 min (m = 61.54, SE = 3.37) in the perimenstrual phase (p < 0.001). Positive emotions were 0.05-0.10 points lower (p = 0.006-0.02) when TWT was greater in the perimenstrual phase. Greater rates of anger and sleep disruption were seen during the perimenstrual phase compared with other phases. When poor sleep occurred during the perimenstrual phase individuals reported reduced positive emotions. Reducing perimenstrual sleep disruptions may be an important intervention target for those at risk for affective disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite its importance to women's reproductive health and its impact on women's daily lives, the menstrual cycle, its regulation, and its impact on health remain poorly understood. As conventional clinical trials rely on infrequent in-person assessments, digital studies with wearable devices enable the collection of longitudinal subjective and objective measures. OBJECTIVE The study aims to explore the technical feasibility of collecting combined wearable and digital questionnaire data and its potential for gaining biological insights into the menstrual cycle. METHODS This prospective observational cohort study was conducted online over 12 weeks. A total of 42 cisgender women were recruited by their local gynecologist in Berlin, Germany, and given a Fitbit Inspire 2 device and access to a study app with digital questionnaires. Statistical analysis included descriptive statistics on user behavior and retention, as well as a comparative analysis of symptoms from the digital questionnaires with metrics from the sensor devices at different phases of the menstrual cycle. RESULTS The average time spent in the study was 63.3 (SD 33.0) days with 9 of the 42 individuals dropping out within 2 weeks of the start of the study. We collected partial data from 114 ovulatory cycles, encompassing 33 participants, and obtained complete data from a total of 50 cycles. Participants reported a total of 2468 symptoms in the daily questionnaires administered during the luteal phase and menses. Despite difficulties with data completeness, the combined questionnaire and sensor data collection was technically feasible and provided interesting biological insights. We observed an increased heart rate in the mid and end luteal phase compared with menses and participants with severe premenstrual syndrome walked substantially fewer steps (average daily steps 10,283, SD 6277) during the luteal phase and menses compared with participants with no or low premenstrual syndrome (mean 11,694, SD 6458). CONCLUSIONS We demonstrate the feasibility of using an app-based approach to collect combined wearable device and questionnaire data on menstrual cycles. Dropouts in the early weeks of the study indicated that engagement efforts would need to be improved for larger studies. Despite the challenges of collecting wearable data on consecutive days, the data collected provided valuable biological insights, suggesting that the use of questionnaires in conjunction with wearable data may provide a more complete understanding of the menstrual cycle and its impact on daily life. The biological findings should motivate further research into understanding the relationship between the menstrual cycle and objective physiological measurements from sensor devices.

Abstract
Yoga Nidra is a promising technique through which body is consciously simulated into a profound relaxation state similar to attained during naturally occurring deep sleep. It is aimed to attain complete emotional, physical, and mental relaxation of body and mind. In postmenopausal phase of life, regular practice of Yoga Nidra at home preferably in morning, can help in reduction in anxiety and pain associated with early morning awakenings. This nonpharmacological technique has a therapeutic potential to improve sleep quality and quantity, and overall well-being.

Abstract
Aspects of sleep change across the menstrual cycle in some women. Poorer sleep quality in the premenstrual phase and menstruation is common in women with premenstrual symptoms or painful menstrual cramps. Although objective sleep continuity remains unchanged across the regular, asymptomatic menstrual cycle, activity in the sleep electroencephalogram varies, with a prominent increase in sleep spindle activity in the postovulatory luteal phase, when progesterone is present, relative to the follicular phase. Menstrual cycle phase, reproductive stage, and menstrual-related disorders should be considered when assessing women's sleep complaints.

Abstract
Mood and sleep are tightly interrelated. Mood and sleep symptoms and disorders are more common in women than in men and often associated with reproductive events. This article reviews the current literature on the reciprocal relationships between mood and sleep across reproductive phases in women, such as menstrual cycle and related disorders, pregnancy, climacteric, and use of hormonal contraception and hormone replacement therapy. Mood and sleep symptoms seem to covary in relation to physiologic and pathologic reproductive conditions, although the relationship seems more clear for subjective than objective sleep.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE There is a strong association between sleep disturbance and negative affect. However, the day-to-day directional connections between sleep and negative affect remain unclear. We examined day-to-day relationships between sleep duration and negative affect in community adults. METHODS Participants were two subsamples of the Midlife in the United States Study (Sample 1: n = 2,022; Sample 2: n = 782). Daily negative affect and previous night sleep duration were assessed via end-of-day telephone interviews for eight days. Random intercept cross-lagged panel models tested sleep duration as a predictor of next-day negative affect and vice versa, controlling for age, gender, and race. RESULTS In both samples, shorter sleep duration predicted higher next-day negative affect, but daily negative affect was not a significant predictor of upcoming-night sleep duration. Follow-up analyses indicated that the relationship between sleep duration and negative affect was nonlinear. Sleeping fewer than 7.5 hours or more than 10.5 hours was associated with greater next-day negative affect than sleeping between 7.5 and 10.5 hours. CONCLUSIONS In two large samples of community adults, sleep duration unidirectionally predicted higher next-day negative affect, and this relationship was nonlinear. Sleeping at least 7.5 hours and no more than 10.5 hours appeared to be an optimal range associated with lowest next-day negative affect.

Abstract
Sex hormones fluctuate over the course of the female lifespan and are associated with brain health and cognition. Thus, hormonal changes throughout female adulthood, and with menopause in particular, may contribute to sex differences in brain function and behavior. Further, sex hormones have been correlated with sleep patterns, which also exhibit sex-specific impacts on the brain and behavior. As such, the interplay between hormones and sleep may contribute to late-life brain and behavioral outcomes in females. Here, in a sample of healthy adult females (n = 79, ages 35-86), we evaluated the effect of hormone-sleep interactions on cognitive and motor performance as well as cerebellar-frontal network connectivity. Salivary samples were used to measure 17β-estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone levels while overnight actigraphy was used to quantify sleep patterns. Cognitive behavior was quantified using the composite average of standardized scores on memory, processing speed, and attentional tasks, and motor behavior was indexed with sequence learning, balance, and dexterity tasks. We analyzed resting-state connectivity correlations for two specific cerebellar-frontal networks: a Crus I to dorsolateral prefrontal cortex network and a Lobule V to primary motor cortex network. In sum, results indicate that sex hormones and sleep patterns interact to predict cerebellar-frontal connectivity and behavior in aging females. Together, the current findings further highlight the potential consequences of endocrine aging in females and suggest that the link between sex hormones and sleep patterns may contribute, in part, to divergent outcomes between sexes in advanced age.

Abstract
Sleep disruption and circadian disruption have been proposed to be risk factors of breast cancer. The present study examined the associations of sleep-related factors, referring to night shift work, sleep habits, and sleep disturbances, with the plasma levels of sex hormones in premenopausal Japanese women. Study participants were 432 women who had regular menstrual cycles less than 40 days long. Information on their history of night shift work and sleep disturbances was obtained using a self-administered questionnaire. Information on their sleep habits, such as usual wake-up times, bedtimes, and ambient light level while sleeping, was obtained in an interview. The participants' height and weight were measured. Plasma concentrations of estradiol, testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), FSH, and LH were also measured. After controlling for the phase of the menstrual cycle and other covariates, more years of night shift work ≥ once a week during the past 10 years was significantly associated with a lower SHBG and a higher free estradiol level. Shorter sleep duration was significantly associated with the higher total, bioavailable, and free testosterone levels. Sleep disturbance by awaking after sleep onset was significantly associated with a high free estradiol level. The data suggest that long-term night shift work, short sleep duration, and arousal during sleep are associated with higher estradiol or testosterone levels in premenopausal women.

Abstract
Males and females show differential patterns in connectivity in resting-state networks (RSNs) during normal aging, from early adulthood to late middle age. Age-related differences in network integration (effectiveness of specialized communication at the global network level) and segregation (functional specialization at the local level of specific brain regions) may also differ by sex. These differences may be due at least in part to endogenous hormonal fluctuation, such as that which occurs in females during midlife with the transition to menopause when levels of estrogens and progesterone drop markedly. A limited number of studies that have investigated sex differences in the action of steroid hormones in brain networks. Here we investigated how sex steroid hormones relate to age-network relationships in both males and females, with a focus on network segregation. Females displayed a significant quadratic relationship between age and network segregation for the cerebellar-basal ganglia and salience networks. In both cases, segregation was still increasing through adulthood, highest in midlife, and with a downturn thereafter. However, there were no significant relationships between sex steroid hormone levels and network segregation levels in females, and they did not exhibit significant associations between progesterone or 17β-estradiol and network segregation. Patterns of connectivity between the cerebellum and basal ganglia have been associated with cognitive performance and self-reported balance confidence in older adults. Together, these findings suggest that network segregation patterns with age in females vary by network, and that sex steroid hormones are not associated with this measure of connectivity in this cross-sectional analysis. Though this is a null effect, it remains critical for understanding the extent to which hormones relate to brain network architecture.

Abstract
As interest in circadian rhythms and their effects continues to grow, there is an increasing need to perform circadian studies in humans. Although the constant routine is the gold standard for these studies, there are advantages to performing more naturalistic studies. Here, a review of protocols for such studies is provided along with sample inclusion and exclusion criteria. Sleep routines, drug use, shift work, and menstrual cycle are addressed as screening considerations. Regarding protocol, best practices for measuring melatonin, including light settings, posture, exercise, and dietary habits are described. The inclusion/exclusion recommendations and protocol guidelines are intended to reduce confounding variables in studies that do not involve the constant routine. Given practical limitations, a range of recommendations is provided from stringent to lenient. The scientific rationale behind these recommendations is discussed. However, where the science is equivocal, recommendations are based on empirical decisions made in previous studies. While not all of the recommendations listed may be practical in all research settings and with limited potential participants, the goal is to allow investigators to make well informed decisions about their screening procedures and protocol techniques and to improve rigor and reproducibility, in line with the objectives of the National Institutes of Health.

Abstract
Study Objectives
This study explored the links between mothers’ objective and subjective sleep and their caregiving feelings toward their infant (i.e. patience for the infant, desire to be with the infant, and anger toward the infant), using a diary study design. We were particularly interested in examining whether nights of lower sleep quality within individual mothers predict more negative maternal caregiving feelings the following day.
Methods
The sample included 151 women, who were recruited during pregnancy. Data were collected at 4 and 8 months after delivery. Maternal sleep was monitored at home for seven nights using actigraphy and sleep diaries. Mothers rated their caregiving feelings each evening.
Results
Multilevel modeling (controlling for depressive symptoms, feeding method, and background variables) revealed that actigraphic and subjective sleep variables were associated with maternal caregiving feeling, both at the between- and within-person levels. For example, lower sleep percent predicted reduced levels of maternal patience for the infant at 4 and 8 months (between-person effect). Moreover, when a mother had a lower sleep percent on a given night (compared to her average), she reported lower levels of patience for her infant the following day (within-person prospective effect).
Conclusions
The findings demonstrate, for the first time, that maternal nightly variations in objective and subjective sleep quality predict daily changes in maternal feelings toward her infant at two different assessment points. Improving maternal sleep quality might be an important target for future interventions which may help mothers to feel more positively toward their infants.

Abstract
This study examined bidirectional associations between daily happiness and negative mood and subjective and objective sleep measures. Participants were 311 adolescents (Mage = 17.37 years; 51.8% female; 59.2% White/European American, 38.6% Black/African American, 1% Hispanic/Latinx American, 1.4% multi‐racial; 19.3% below poverty line) observed over a 7‐day period (2017–2018) using sleep diaries and actigraphy. Daily negative mood was related to greater subjective sleep/wake problems, and happiness was related to lower subjective sleep/wake problems. Conversely, shorter self‐reported sleep duration was related to higher negative mood the next day. For actigraphy measures, daily negative mood was related to greater sleep duration and efficiency, whereas happiness was related to lower sleep efficiency. Differences in associations based on subjective versus objective sleep measures are discussed.

Abstract
Background and Objective The ovulatory menstrual cycle is characterized by hormonal fluctuations that influence physiological systems and functioning. Multi-sensor wearable devices can be sensitive tools capturing cycle-related physiological features pertinent to women’s health research. This study used the Oura ring to track changes in sleep and related physiological features, and also tracked self-reported daily functioning and symptoms across the regular, healthy menstrual cycle. Methods Twenty-six healthy women (age, mean (SD): 24.4 (1.1 years)) with regular, ovulatory cycles (length, mean (SD): 28.57 (3.8 days)) were monitored across a complete menstrual cycle. Four menstrual cycle phases, reflecting different hormone milieus, were selected for analysis: menses, ovulation, mid-luteal, and late-luteal. Objective measures of sleep, sleep distal skin temperature, heart rate (HR) and vagal-mediated heart rate variability (HRV, rMSSD), derived from the Oura ring, and subjective daily diary measures (eg sleep quality, readiness) were compared across phases. Results Wearable-based measures of sleep continuity and sleep stages did not vary across the menstrual cycle. Women reported no menstrual cycle-related changes in perceived sleep quality or readiness and only marginally poorer mood in the midluteal phase. However, they reported moderately more physical symptoms during menses (p < 0.001). Distal skin temperature and HR, measured during sleep, showed a biphasic pattern across the menstrual cycle, with increased HR (p < 0.03) and body temperature (p < 0.001) in the mid- and late-luteal phases relative to menses and ovulation. Correspondingly, rMSSD HRV tended to be lower in the luteal phase. Further, distal skin temperature was lower during ovulation relative to menses (p = 0.05). Conclusion The menstrual cycle was not accompanied by significant fluctuations in objective and perceived measures of sleep or in mood, in healthy women with regular, ovulatory menstrual cycles. However, other physiological changes in skin temperature and HR were evident and may be longitudinally tracked with the Oura ring in women over multiple cycles in a natural setting.

Abstract
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS), a recurrent and moderate disorder that occurs during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and quickly resolves after menstruation, is characterized by somatic and emotional discomfort that can be severe enough to impair daily activities. Current therapeutic drugs for PMS such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are not very satisfying. As a critical pineal hormone, melatonin has increasingly been suggested to modulate PMS symptoms. In this review, we update the latest progress on PMS-induced sleep disturbance, mood changes, and cognitive impairment and provide possible pathways by which melatonin attenuates these symptoms. Moreover, we focus on the role of melatonin in PMS molecular mechanisms. Herein, we show that melatonin can regulate ovarian estrogen and progesterone, of which cyclic fluctuations contribute to PMS pathogenesis. Melatonin also modulates gamma-aminobutyric acid and the brain-derived neurotrophic factor system in PMS. Interpreting the role of melatonin in PMS is not only informative to clarify PMS etiology but also instructive to melatonin and its receptor agonist application to promote female health. As a safe interaction, melatonin treatment can be effective in alleviating symptoms of PMS. However, symptoms such as sleep disturbance, depressive mood, cognitive impairment are not specific and can be easily misdiagnosed. Connections between melatonin receptor, ovarian steroid dysfunction, and PMS are not consistent among past studies. Before final conclusions are drawn, more well-organized and rigorous studies are recommended.

Abstract
Purpose Post-menopausal life is fairly long period of life that is marked by poor health and sleep. Fatigue amidst extraordinary pandemic stress had taken a toll on the sleep quality and overall wellbeing. Yogic sleep can be instrumental in relaxing the brain and help in achieving self-control of mind and body in the post-menopausal life. This can be a non-pharmacological intervention to improve the wellbeing of women. Methods Effect of 24 weeks of yoga-nidra practice and exercise module was tested in a post-menopausal subject after taking baseline of 4 weeks on parameters like sleep latency, total sleep time, mood on waking and during day, BMI, and activity rhythm of body using 24 h actigraphy and sleep diary. Results After administering the dual protocol, there was remarkable elevation in mood both on waking up and entire day from 5th week onwards. Mood shifted toward a happier state. Latency to sleep decreased after 4 weeks, while total sleep time improved only after 16 weeks of dual management strategy. The BMI was also reduced to 28.4 from initial value of 30.3. Morning awakening patterns did not change, but it was not accompanied by pain or headache. Conclusion The results indicated the therapeutic potential of yoga-nidra and exercise package in this actigraphy-based longitudinal pilot study. Yoga-nidra can be easily practiced at home, and thus, it is a promising non-pharmacological strategy for aging population in improving their wellbeing.

Comparisons of mood states associated with outcomes achieved by female and male athletes in high-level judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu championships: psychological factors associated with the probability of success. J Strength Cond Res 35(9): 2518-2524, 2019-Moods can be used to predict the performance of athletes in various sports; accordingly, we selected the Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS) to evaluate mood states of high-level judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) athletes. The aims of this study were (a) to compare the mood states of high-level female and male athletes in BJJ and judo championships in relation to their performance outcomes and (b) to verify associations between psychological factors and performance in estimating their probability of success. The subjects were 173 grappling athletes (judo, n = 85 and BJJ, n = 88), separated into male (n = 129, 40 winners and 89 nonwinners) and female (n = 44, 23 winners and 21 nonwinners) groups. Each subject's mood state was assessed 60 minutes before the first match using the BRUMS (tension, depression, anger, vigor, fatigue, and mental confusion dimensions). Descriptive and inferential statistics (including logistic regression and variance analysis) were used to evaluate relations between mood states and performance (i.e., winning/losing), with p ≤ 0.05. Analysis showed significant differences between male and female athletes in vigor and fatigue, and differences between male judo and male BJJ athletes in tension, vigor, confusion, and fatigue. Female judo and female BJJ athletes showed significant differences in depression and vigor. Logistic regression revealed that higher levels of anger and tension increased athletes' chances of performing well in a match by 23 and 13%, respectively. In addition, lower levels of depression increased athletes' chances of better performance by up to 32%. Overall, we observed a significant relationship between mood state and sports performance. Thus, coaching staff and athletes should monitor athletes' mood states before competitions to ensure that they are in optimal condition to perform and use psychological interventions to support judo and BJJ preparation.

Abstract
CONTEXT Sleep is critical for optimal childhood metabolic health and neurodevelopment. However, there is limited knowledge regarding childhood sex differences in sleep, including children with neurodevelopmental disorders, and the impact of such differences on metabolic health. OBJECTIVE To evaluate if sex differences in childhood sleep exist and if sleep associates with metabolic health outcomes equally by sex. Using autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as a case study, we also examine sleep sex differences in children with a neurodevelopmental disorder. METHODS A narrative review explored the literature focussing on sex differences in childhood sleep. RESULTS Sex differences in sleep were not detected among pre-adolescents. However, female adolescents were more likely to report impaired sleep than males. Childhood obesity is more common in males. Shorter sleep duration may be associated with obesity in male pre-adolescents/adolescents; although findings are mixed. ASD is male-predominant; yet, there was an indication that pre-adolescent female children with ASD had more impaired sleep. CONCLUSION Sex differences in sleep appear to emerge in adolescence with more impaired sleep in females. This trend was also observed among pre-adolescent female children with ASD. Further research is needed on sex differences in childhood sleep and metabolic health and the underlying mechanisms driving these differences.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Past studies have found that various psychiatric symptoms fluctuate over the menstrual cycle. Sleep disturbance is a transdiagnostic feature of psychiatric conditions and is associated with several symptoms that exhibit menstrual fluctuations. Although some evidence indicates that subjective sleep quality changes over the menstrual cycle in healthy women, no studies have investigated whether sleep fluctuates over the menstrual cycle in psychiatric populations, other than premenstrual dysphoric disorder. METHODS The present study used a mixed between- within-groups design to compare self-reported sleep characteristics (sleep onset latency, number and duration of night-time awakenings, and total sleep time), sleep quality, insomnia symptoms, and daytime sleepiness in women with (n = 31) and without (n = 32) generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) at two time points within a single menstrual cycle - the early-follicular (low ovarian hormones) and mid-luteal (high ovarian hormones) phases. RESULTS Women with GAD reported lower sleep quality, more insomnia symptoms, and more daytime sleepiness (ηp2 = 0.13-0.14), but comparable sleep characteristics, compared to women without GAD. In both groups, sleep variables remained stable over the menstrual phases examined. Within-person changes in estradiol and progesterone between the two menstrual phases were mostly not associated with within-person changes in sleep variables, except that larger increases in estradiol were associated with a reduction in the number of night-time awakenings from the early-follicular to mid-luteal phases (β = -0.26). CONCLUSION These findings indicate that subjective sleep disturbance, unlike other psychiatric symptoms, may not be modulated by the menstrual cycle and ovarian hormones during the phases examined in this study.

Abstract
Sleep problems and depression are both common and have a high impact on quality of life. They are also strongly associated and commonly occur together. During the reproductive age, both sleep problems and depression are almost twice as common in women than men. Epidemiological studies show that women experience more sleep problems and depressive symptoms around times when sex hormones change, such as puberty and menopause, but it is unclear what effect sex hormones have on sleep problems and depression. This systematic review aims to summarize and evaluate studies that investigated the relationship between sex hormones, sleep and depression. Systematic search resulted in 2895 articles, of which 13 met inclusion criteria. Depressed patients showed worse sleep than controls, but no significant difference in endogenous hormone levels was found. Additionally, higher endogenous estrogen was associated with better sleep in controls, but associations between endogenous sex hormones and depressive symptoms were inconclusive. More research on the effect of sex hormones on sleep and depression is necessary.

Abstract
Approximately 9% of adults report the symptoms of insomnia, and there are a number of adverse consequences of insomnia. This could be a public health concern. The current study seeks plausible longitudinal predictors of insomnia for prevention purposes. A community sample of 674 participants (53% African Americans and 47% Puerto Ricans; 60% were females) were recruited from the Harlem Longitudinal Development Study. We applied a growth mixture model to obtain the triple trajectories of alcohol, cigarette, and marijuana use. Logistic regression analyses were then conducted to examine the associations between the triple trajectory groups from mean age 14 to 36 and insomnia at age 36. The estimated prevalence of insomnia is 7.1%. A five-group triple trajectory model was selected: A) Increasing use of all three substances (18%); B) Moderate use of alcohol and marijuana, and high use of cigarette (11%); C) Moderate use of alcohol and cigarette, and experimental use of marijuana (3%); D) Moderate use of all three substances (5%); and E) No or low use of all three substances (63%). Among the five trajectory groups, the increasing use of all three substances group (AOR = 2.71, p-value = .011) was associated with an increased likelihood of having insomnia as compared to the no or low use of all three substances group. Treatment programs to quit or reduce the use of alcohol, cigarette, and marijuana may help decrease the prevalence of insomnia. This could lead to improvements in individualized treatments for patients who have symptoms of insomnia and who also use substances.

J Strength Cond Res 31(4): 1033-1039, 2017-We described the perceived sleep quality and mood states of elite athletes during a competitive period, and clarified their relationship to athletes' sport performance. Participants were 576 Brazilian elite athletes (404 men and 172 women) of individual and team sports. Mood states were evaluated using the Brunel Mood Scale, whereas perceived sleep quality was evaluated using a single question ("How would you evaluate the quality of your sleep in the last few days?"). Evaluations of mood state and sleep quality were performed up to 60 minutes before national and international sports competitions began. Descriptive and inferential statistics (including logistic regression) were used to evaluate the relationship of sleep quality and mood states with performance (i.e., winning or losing). Athletes typically had good sleep quality and mood states similar to the Iceberg profile (i.e., high vigor and low tension, depression, anger, fatigue, and mental confusion). The Wald test revealed that sleep, anger, tension, and vigor predicted athletes' performance. Specifically, poor sleep quality and low vigor and anger decreased the odds of winning, whereas higher tension increased these odds. The Hosmer-Lemeshow test indicated that the results were sufficiently generalizable. Overall, we observed a significant relationship between sleep and mood states, which in turn both significantly influenced athletes' sports performance. Thus, coaching staff and athletes should monitor athletes' sleep quality before competitions to ensure athletes are in the optimal condition for performance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Sleep disturbances are thought to be frequent in women undergoing IVF despite minimal research of this hypothesis. Our goal was to longitudinally assess sleep duration and disturbances in women undergoing IVF and assess impact of habitual sleep duration on oocytes retrieved, an important outcome in IVF. METHODS Actigraphy and questionnaire batteries containing sleep and psychometric instruments were performed prior to and throughout 24 IVF cycles. RESULTS TST <7 h was present in 46%, 57%, 69%, and 42% of baseline, stimulation, post-oocyte retrieval, and post-embryo transfer recordings. ESS >10 was noted in 24%, 33%, and 36% of cycles during baseline, stimulation, and post-embryo transfer. PSQI >5 was noted in 57%, 43%, and 29% of cycles during baseline, stimulation, and post-embryo transfer. TST (F = 2.95, p = 0.04) and ESS (F = 4.36, p = 0.02) were the only sleep metrics in which a significant main effect of time was found by mixed models analysis. The final linear regression model chosen by stepwise selection to best explain the variability in oocytes retrieved included anti-mullerian hormone, day three follicle stimulating hormone, and baseline TST and explained 40% of the variance in oocytes retrieved (adjusted R2 = 0.40, p = 0.03). Although not statistically significant, a trend towards a linear association between baseline TST and oocytes retrieved was seen with an increase of oocytes retrieved by 1.5 for every hour increase in TST (p = 0.09). CONCLUSIONS This is the first study to describe, with subjective and objective measures, sleep disturbances present throughout the IVF cycle. Importantly, a trend towards a linear relationship between TST and oocytes retrieved was found in this pilot study. Sleep may be a modifiable target to improve outcomes in women undergoing IVF and further investigations are needed.
