Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to characterize the incidence of pediatric narcolepsy diagnosis, subsequent care, and potential sociodemographic disparities in a large US claims database. METHODS Merative MarketScan insurance claims (n = 12,394,902) were used to identify youth (6-17 years of age) newly diagnosed with narcolepsy (International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision codes). Narcolepsy diagnosis and care 1 year postdiagnosis included polysomnography with Multiple Sleep Latency Test, pharmacological care, and clinical visits. Potential disparities were examined by insurance coverage and child race and ethnicity (Medicaid-insured only). RESULTS The incidence of narcolepsy diagnosis was 10:100,000, primarily type 2 (69.9%). Most diagnoses occurred in adolescents with no sex differences, but higher rates in Black vs White youth with Medicaid. Two thirds had a prior sleep disorder diagnosis and 21-36% had other co-occurring diagnoses. Only half (46.6%) had polysomnography with Multiple Sleep Latency Test (± 1 year postdiagnosis). Specialty care (18.9% pulmonary, 26.9% neurology) and behavioral health visits were rare (34.4%), although half were prescribed stimulant medications (51.0%). Medicaid-insured were 86% less likely than commercially insured youth to have any clinical care and 33% less likely to have polysomnography with Multiple Sleep Latency Test. CONCLUSIONS Narcolepsy diagnoses occurred in 0.01% of youth, primarily during adolescence, and at higher rates for Black vs White children with Medicaid. Only half overall had evidence of a diagnostically required polysomnography with Multiple Sleep Latency Test, underscoring potential misdiagnosis. Many patients had co-occurring conditions, but specialty and behavioral health care were limited. Results suggest misdiagnosis, underdiagnosis, and limited narcolepsy treatment, as well as possible disparities. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine specific sleep characteristics of adults living in Canada according to sex, gender, ethnoracial background, socioeconomic status, immigration status, sexual orientation, and language spoken at home. METHODS This cross-sectional and nationally representative study used self-reported data from the 2021 Canadian Community Health Survey (n = 39,346 adults aged 18 years and older). Sleep characteristics (sleep duration, nighttime insomnia symptoms, unrefreshing sleep, and difficulty staying awake) were assessed and compared across groups. RESULTS Females were more likely than males to report nighttime insomnia symptoms (23.1% vs. 14.8%) and unrefreshing sleep (17.2% vs. 13.5%). The same was also observed for gender identity. Although White respondents were more likely to meet sleep duration recommendations (58.3%), they had the highest prevalence of nighttime insomnia symptoms (20.9%) compared to respondents with other ethnoracial backgrounds. Respondents coming from lower socioeconomic backgrounds were more likely to report poorer sleep compared to those coming from higher socioeconomic backgrounds. Insomnia symptoms were lower among immigrants (13.9%) compared to nonimmigrants (21.1%). Respondents with a sexual orientation not classified as heterosexual, gay, or lesbian reported poorer sleep. Finally, for language spoken at home, those who responded "French only" were more likely to meet sleep duration recommendations (64.1%) and were less likely to report unrefreshing sleep (8.8%). Nighttime insomnia symptoms were the lowest among those who reported speaking a language other than French or English at home (9.5%). CONCLUSION This study highlights important sleep disparities among Canadians. Future intervention strategies should aim to reduce sleep health disparities.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES To examine differences in the longitudinal prevalence of childhood insomnia symptoms across black/African American, Hispanic/Latinx, and non-Hispanic white groups. METHODS Participants were 519 children from the Penn State Child Cohort (baseline [V1] from 2000-2005) who were followed up 8 years later as adolescents (V2) and 15 years later as young adults (S3). Mean age at S3 was 24.1 ± 2.7 years. Approximately, 76.5% identified as non-Hispanic white, 12.9% as black/African American, 7.1% as Hispanic/Latinx, and 3.5% as "other" race/ethnicity. Insomnia symptoms were defined as parent-reported (childhood) or self-reported (adolescence and young adulthood) moderate-to-severe difficulties initiating/maintaining sleep. Longitudinal trajectories of insomnia symptoms were identified across three-time points and the odds of each trajectory were compared between racial/ethnic groups, adjusting for sex, age, overweight, sleep apnea, periodic limb movements, psychiatric/behavioral disorders, and psychotropic medication use. RESULTS Black/African Americans compared to non-Hispanic whites were at significantly higher odds of having a childhood-onset persistent trajectory through young adulthood (OR = 2.58, 95% CI [1.29, 5.14]), while Hispanics/Latinx were at nonsignificantly higher odds to have the same trajectory (OR = 1.81, 95% CI [0.77, 4.25]). No significant racial/ethnic differences were observed for remitted and waxing-and-waning trajectories since childhood or incident/new-onset trajectories in young adulthood. CONCLUSIONS The results indicate that disparities in insomnia symptoms among black/African American and, to a lesser extent, Hispanic/Latinx groups start early in childhood and persist into young adulthood. Identifying and intervening upon upstream determinants of racial/ethnic insomnia disparities are warranted to directly address these disparities and to prevent their adverse health sequelae. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Dysfunctional beliefs about sleep are associated with components of sleep health, but their association with global sleep health is understudied. Beliefs about sleep may systematically vary by race, which may influence the association between dysfunctional beliefs about sleep and global sleep health. This study aimed to investigate whether race influences the association between dysfunctional beliefs about sleep and global sleep health. METHODS Data were collected as part of an online survey. Participants were Black (n = 181) and White (n = 179) adults who were matched on age, self-reported sex, and level of education. Global sleep health was measured using the RU-SATED and dysfunctional beliefs about sleep were measured using the DBAS-16. Moderation analyses were conducted to investigate whether race moderated the association between DBAS-16 total and subscale scores and RU-SATED total scores. RESULTS Race moderated the associations between DBAS-16 total score and subscale scores and RU-SATED total score (b = 0.54, p < .001). Higher DBAS-16 scores were significantly associated with lower RU-SATED scores in the white sample, while this association was not significant in the Black sample, except for the Sleep Expectations subscale, where the association was not significant in the White sample, and it was significant in the Black sample. CONCLUSIONS These findings highlight that the association between dysfunctional beliefs about sleep and global sleep health may systematically vary by race which may have implications for promoting sleep health equity in racial minority populations through clinical and advocacy work. Future studies are needed to investigate what specific factors may be impacting these unique associations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to examine ethnic disparities in the prevalence of diabetes and its association with sleep disorders among the older adults Han and ethnic minority (Bai, Ha Ni, and Dai) population in rural southwest China. METHODS A cross-sectional survey of 5,642 was conducted among the rural southwest population aged ≥60 years, consisting of a structured interview and measurement of fasting blood glucose, height, weight, and waist circumference. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality. RESULTS The overall prevalence of diabetes and sleep disorder was 10.2% and 40.1%, respectively. Bai participants had the highest prevalence of diabetes (15.9%) and obesity (9.9%)(P < 0.01), while Ha Ni participants had the lowest prevalence of diabetes (5.1%) and obesity (3.4%)(P < 0.01). The highest prevalence of sleep disorder (48.4%) was recorded in Bai participants, while Dai participants had the lowest prevalence of sleep disorder (25.6%)(P < 0.01). In all four studied ethnicities, females had a higher prevalence of sleep disorder than males (P < 0.01), and the prevalence of sleep disorder increased with age (P < 0.01). The results of multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated older adults with sleep disorder had a risk of developing diabetes (P < 0.05). Moreover, the higher educational level, family history of diabetes, and obesity were the main risk factors for diabetes in participants (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION There are stark ethnic disparities in the prevalence of diabetes and sleep disorders in southwest China. Future diabetes prevention and control strategies should be tailored to address ethnicity, and improving sleep quality may reduce the prevalence of diabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The high prevalence of poor sleep quality (PSQ) in the general population leads to negative health outcomes. Since estimates of PSQ prevalence in the Chinese general population vary widely, this meta-analysis aimed to refine these estimates and to identify moderating factors. METHODS A comprehensive literature search was undertaken in both international (PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and EMBASE) and Chinese (Wanfang, and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases) databases from inception to 23 November 2023. Studies were required to have used standard scales such as the Chinese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The pooled prevalence of PSQ and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using a random-effects model. Subgroup and meta-regression analyses were performed to identify sources of heterogeneity. RESULTS In 32 studies with a combined 376,824 participants, the pooled prevalence of PSQ was 19.0% (95% CI 15.8-22.8%; range 6.6-43.6%). Across 22 studies that reported PSQI data, the pooled mean score was 4.32 (95%CI 3.82-4.81; SD = 0.502). The pooled mean sleep duration across 8 studies was 7.62 (95% CI 7.23-8.00; SD = 0.194) hours. Subgroup analyses showed that lower education (Q = 4.12, P = 0.042), living in less developed regions (Q = 60.28, P < 0.001), and lower PSQI cutoff values (Q = 9.80, P = 0.007) were significantly associated with PSQ. Meta-regression analyses showed that study quality was inversely associated with estimated PSQ prevalence (β = - 0.442, P = 0.004). LIMITATIONS Although measures such as subgroup and meta-regression analyses were performed, substantial heterogeneity remained. Information related to sleep quality, such as comorbid physical diseases or psychiatric disorders, substance use, occupational types, and employment status, were not reported in most studies. CONCLUSION One in five people in the general population of China may have PSQ and people with lower education or living in western regions may be more susceptible.

Abstract
PURPOSE We investigated the relationship between various forms of firearm violence exposure and sleep problems among nationally representative samples of Black (N = 3015) and American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) (N = 527) adults, focusing on difficulties falling asleep, staying asleep, and waking too early. Survey data were collected in April and May 2023. METHODS We employed negative binomial regression models to analyze the associations between the different types of firearm violence exposure and sleep problems. We further examined associations between cumulative firearm violence exposure and sleep outcomes. RESULTS A substantial proportion of Black (59%) and AI/AN (56%) adults reported experiencing some form of firearm violence exposure. Being threatened with a firearm emerged as a consistent factor associated with sleep problems for both racial groups. Witnessing or hearing about shootings was linked to sleep problems in the Black sample, while cumulative firearm violence exposure was associated with all sleep problems in both groups. CONCLUSIONS Individual and cumulative firearm violence exposure is associated with increased sleep problems among Black and AI/AN adults.

Abstract
Introduction Sleep disruption affects biological processes that facilitate carcinogenesis. This retrospective cohort study used de-identified data from the Veterans Administration (VA) electronic medical record system to test the hypothesis that patients with diagnosed sleep disorders had an increased risk of prostate, breast, colorectal, or other cancers (1999-2010, N=663,869). This study builds upon existing evidence by examining whether patients with more severe or longer-duration diagnoses were at a greater risk of these cancers relative to those with a less severe or shorter duration sleep disorder. Methods Incident cancer cases were identified in the VA Tumor Registry and sleep disorders were defined by International Classification of Sleep Disorder codes. Analyses were performed using extended Cox regression with sleep disorder diagnosis as a time-varying covariate. Results Sleep disorders were present among 56,055 eligible patients (8% of the study population); sleep apnea (46%) and insomnia (40%) were the most common diagnoses. There were 18,181 cancer diagnoses (41% prostate, 12% colorectal, 1% female breast, 46% other). The hazard ratio (HR) for a cancer diagnosis was 1.45 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.37, 1.54) among those with any sleep disorder, after adjustment for age, sex, state of residence, and marital status. Risks increased with increasing sleep disorder duration (short [<1-2 years] HR: 1.04 [CI: 1.03-1.06], medium [>2-5 years] 1.23 [1.16-1.32]; long [>5-12 years] 1.52 [1.34-1.73]). Risks also increased with increasing sleep disorder severity using cumulative sleep disorder treatments as a surrogate exposure; African Americans with more severe disorders had greater risks relative to those with fewer treatments and other race groups. Results among patients with only sleep apnea, insomnia, or another sleep disorder were similar to those for all sleep disorders combined. Discussion The findings are consistent with other studies indicating that sleep disruption is a cancer risk factor. Optimal sleep and appropriate sleep disorder management are modifiable risk factors that may facilitate cancer prevention.

Abstract
Sleep is a behavior expressed differently for each individual. However, studies have shown that some ethnic groups express common sleep patterns, which can be observed in different ethnic groups. Previous studies have shown the existence of sleep disparities in populations of different ethnicities. Most of these studies have considered self-reported ethnicity and assessed sleep subjectively. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate sleep disparities in different ethnic groups based on an analysis of genetic ancestry and the use of objective sleep evaluation. To do this, we used data from the São Paulo Epidemiologic Sleep Study (EPISONO), which was undertaken in Brazil, a country that is known for its ethnic/racial diversity. All individuals completed a series of questionnaires, underwent full polysomnography and had their blood collected for DNA extraction. After genotyping and identifying samples with high-quality DNA suitable for genetic analysis, 31 ancestry-informative markers (AIMs) were selected. These markers exhibited substantial allelic frequency differences, enabling the characterization of the three primary founding populations of modern Brazil - Europeans, West-Africans, and Native Americans. Through this analysis, the genetic contribution of each of these ancestral groups was identified in respect of each participant. Based on this, a latent class cluster analysis (LCCA) was performed to define the three clusters that best classified the sample according to ethnic group: African (n = 255), Caucasian (n = 668) and Native American (n = 83). Applying the adjusted model for the confounding variables (age, socio-economic class and sex), statistically significant differences in sleep variables between ethnicities were found. Africans had higher sleep latency compared to the other groups (β = 4.46, CI = 1.18 to 7.74 and β = 7.83, CI = 3.50 to 12.15), while Caucasians had longer total sleep time (β = -16.47, CI = -29.94 to -2.99) and better sleep efficiency (β = -2.19, CI = -4.35 to -0.02) compared to Africans. Regarding the respiratory arousals index (β = -1.11, IC = -2.07 to -0.16) and periodic leg movements index (β = -7.48, CI = -12.08 to -2.88), both were higher among Caucasians compared to Africans. We were able to conclude that genetic ancestry might modulate sleep structure and the occurrence of sleep disorders.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW To review underlying mechanisms and environmental factors that may influence racial disparities in the development of salt-sensitive blood pressure. RECENT FINDINGS Our group and others have observed racial differences in diet and hydration, which may influence salt sensitivity. Dietary salt elicits negative alterations to the gut microbiota and immune system, which may increase hypertension risk, but little is known regarding potential racial differences in these physiological responses. Antioxidant supplementation and exercise offset vascular dysfunction following dietary salt, including in Black adults. Furthermore, recent work proposes the role of racial differences in exposure to social determinants of health, and differences in health behaviors that may influence risk of salt sensitivity. Physiological and environmental factors contribute to the mechanisms that manifest in racial differences in salt-sensitive blood pressure. Using this information, additional work is needed to develop strategies that can attenuate racial disparities in salt-sensitive blood pressure.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES There are racial and ethnic disparities in sleep duration, with members of historically marginalized groups typically reporting shorter sleep than White Americans. This study examines subjective social status (SSS) as a moderator, and variation in ideal sleep norms as a mediator, of differences in sleep duration between racial/ethnic groups. METHODS Asian, Black, Hispanic, and non-Hispanic White respondents in an online survey reported their typical weeknight and weekend-night sleep duration, along with estimates of ideal sleep duration norms. Objective and subjective indicators of socioeconomic status were also assessed. A conditional process analysis was used to examine whether racial or ethnic differences in sleep duration were a) moderated by SSS and b) mediated by ideal sleep duration norms. RESULTS Racial/ethnic disparities in sleep duration varied by group. Hispanic participants reported shorter weeknight sleep than White participants. In Asian and Black participants, shorter weeknight sleep relative to White participants was only observed at medium (Black) or high (Black and Asian) levels of SSS. Shorter norms for ideal sleep duration partially mediated differences in sleep duration between Black and White adults, but not the other racial/ethnic groups. There was no evidence of moderated mediation. Neither income nor education moderated racial/ethnic disparities in sleep duration. CONCLUSIONS Racial and ethnic disparities in sleep duration may partially depend on SSS. Continued research into moderators and mediators of racial/ethnic differences in sleep duration is warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The racial and ethnic differences in trajectories of sleep disturbances in later life are crucial for addressing health disparities, but are not well understood. This study examines (a) how trajectories of sleep disturbances vary by race and ethnicity and birth cohort and (b) whether social and health risk factors explain such variations. METHODS The study uses longitudinal data from the 2002-2018 Health and Retirement Study (N = 21 963) and the multilevel growth curve model to assess trajectories of sleep disturbances and their variations across 6 cohorts of White, Black, and Hispanic older adults. Sleep disturbances are measured using a modified Jenkins Sleep Scale. RESULTS Without controls, sleep disturbances increased with aging for all racial and ethnic groups, but more rapidly among minorities, particularly younger cohorts of Hispanic older adults. When controlling for social and health risks, sleep disturbances did not change with aging for Whites and Blacks and increased for younger cohorts of Hispanics. Cohort effects were observed among White older adults, with higher sleep disturbances in younger cohorts. Importantly, the racial and ethnic disparities in age and cohort effects were not fully explained by social and health risks. Of the symptoms, the most salient racial and ethnic disparities were found in "waking up at night" and "not feeling rested." CONCLUSIONS Findings reveal several differences by race and ethnicity and birth cohort in trajectories of sleep disturbances. Efforts should be made to improve sleep health for older adults as they age, especially for younger cohorts of Blacks and Hispanics.

Abstract
Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) refers to a spectrum of disorders ranging from habitual snoring without frank episodes of obstructed breathing or desaturation during sleep to obstructive sleep apnea, where apneas and hypopneas repetitively occur with resultant intermittent hypoxia, arousal, and sleep disruption. Disparities in SDB reflect its overall high prevalence in children and adults from racially and ethnically minoritized or low socioeconomic status backgrounds coupled with high rates of underdiagnosis and suboptimal treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although health equity is critically important for healthcare delivery, there are inconsistencies in its definitions or lack of definitions. PURPOSE Develop a comprehensive understanding of health equity to guide nursing practice and healthcare policy. METHOD Walker and Avant's concept analysis method was used to establish defining attributes, antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents of health equity. FINDINGS Health equity defining attributes are grounded in ethical principles, the absence of unfair and avoidable differences, and fair and just opportunities to attain a person's full health potential. Health equity antecedents are categorized into environmental; financial or economic; law, politics, and policy; societal and structural; research; and digital and technology. DISCUSSION Health equity's antecedents are useful to distinguish health disparities from health outcomes resulting from individual preferences. To achieve health equity, organizations need to focus on addressing the antecedents.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Problematic sleep is a major threat to health and quality of life among adolescents. Hence, to provide directions for research and interventions, there is a need to examine the literature on adolescent sleep health in Africa. However, available studies on adolescent sleep health in Africa have not been properly mapped. Thus, this scoping review aims to investigate the extent and type of available evidence concerning sleep health among adolescents in Africa and to highlight the relationship of adolescent sleep health with adverse mental health outcomes and cardiometabolic risk factors. The review will further highlight areas of agreement and controversies on adolescent sleep health, and identify evidence gaps that require research attention across the continent. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This scoping review will be conducted using Arksey and O'Malley's six-step procedure. Thus, we have prepared this protocol according to the framework for scoping reviews developed by the Joanna Briggs Institute. To identify eligible studies, we will search MEDLINE, Scopus, PsycINFO, AJOL, JSTOR, HINARI and Google Scholar. The review will include all published articles in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian languages on adolescent sleep health in Africa from the inception of the databases, while relevant information will be extracted from included studies using an adapted data extraction tool. The results will be presented using tables and charts as appropriate. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION The scoping review does not require ethical approval because the publications to be used for the review are publicly available and the study does not involve contact with humans or other animals as research participants. Furthermore, clinical records will not be used for the study. Upon completion, findings from the study will be disseminated through presentations at scientific meetings and publication in a relevant peer-reviewed journal. Abstract
Objectives To identify associations between demographics, social determinants of health, health conditions, and reported history of insomnia. A cross-sectional study including 11,960 adult community members recruited through HealthStreet, a community outreach program at University of Florida. Methods Health assessments were conducted via interviews. Participants reported their demographic background, level of social support, history of health conditions, and insomnia. Logistic regression was used to understand associations between risk factors and history of insomnia. Results The prevalence of self-reported insomnia was 27.3%. Adults aged ≥ 65 years (OR = 1.16) and women (OR = 1.18) reported higher rates of insomnia than their counterparts. Black/African American individuals reported lower rates of insomnia (OR = 0.72) than White individuals. Individuals with food insecurity (OR = 1.53), a military history (OR = 1.30), lower social support (OR = 1.24), living alone (OR = 1.14), anxiety (OR = 2.33), cardiometabolic disease (OR = 1.58), and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (OR = 1.44) were significantly more likely to endorse insomnia compared with their counterparts. Depression (OR = 2.57) had the strongest association with insomnia. Conclusions This study provides evidence regarding who is at greater risk for insomnia among a large community-based sample. Our findings highlight the importance of screening for insomnia, particularly among patients who experience food insecurity, are military veterans, have anxiety, depression, ADHD, or cardiometabolic disease, as well as those who live alone or have lower levels of social support. Future public health campaigns should provide education on insomnia symptoms, treatments, and evidenced-based sleep-promotion strategies.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Considerable disparities in the prevalence, diagnosis, and management of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) exist for minority groups in the United States. However, the impact of OSA on Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders (NHPIs) has not been evaluated. METHODS We performed a retrospective review of patient records of NHPIs who underwent sleep apnea testing between 2014 and 2021 at a single center in Utah to characterize the distribution of comorbidities, disease severity, and treatment adherence. RESULTS 140 of 141 NHPI patients who underwent sleep testing had OSA. High rates of obesity (94%) and other relevant comorbidities were found. OSA was mostly severe (57%), particularly in males with higher obesity. Adherence to continuous positive airway pressure was low (41% using for 4 or more hours on 70% of nights), and medical factors predicted whether adherence targets were met with modest accuracy (area under the curve 0.699). CONCLUSIONS NHPIs at a single sleep center had a high prevalence of comorbidities in association with OSA, a skewed distribution toward severe disease suggestive of barriers to care or unique disease characteristics, and low adherence to continuous positive airway pressure. These findings suggest a high burden of OSA in this population, and further work to characterize barriers to identifying and treating OSA in NHPIs can improve chronic disease outcomes in NHPIs. Abstract
Objective This study assessed cardiovascular health (CVH) in young adults using the 2022 AHA Life's Essential 8 (LE8) score and compared it with the Life's Simple 7 (LS7) score. Methods Individuals aged 18 to 44 years without a history of cardiovascular disease in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) cycles were included. Data from 2007-2008 to 2017-2018 were combined to create 3 groups (2007-2010, 2011-2014, and 2015-2018) for analysis. The LE8 score and its components were computed in the overall population and stratified by sex and race/ethnicity. Trends for the LE8 score were analyzed using adjusted linear regression models. Results Among 12,197 young adults, representing an estimated 89.4 million individuals, from the NHANES 2007-2018, the CVH in the overall population and across all subgroups was stable (Ptrend >0.05). The blood lipid score improved across all subgroups (Ptrend:<0.05). The mean LE8 score was 69.2±0.3. Females (71.4±0.4) had better CVH compared with males (67.2±0.4). Non-Hispanic Black individuals (65.1± 0.3) had the lowest CVH compared with Non-Hispanic White individuals (69.9±0.5), Mexican American individuals (67.3±0.3), and other race individuals (71.2±0.4). Of the 46.1 million individuals categorized as intermediate CVH by the LS7 score, 8.1 million (17.6%) and 2.3 million (5.0%) were reclassified to poor and ideal CVH by the LE8 score, respectively. Of the 40.1 million individuals categorized as ideal CVH by the LS7 score, 18.9 million (47.1%) and 0.1 million (0.2%) were reclassified to poor CVH and intermediate CVH by the LE8 score, respectively. Conclusion Among US young adults, there has been no improvement in CVH over the last decade with notable sex and race/ethnicity-associated differences in the LE8 score. Nearly 1 in 4 young adults had ideal CVH using the LE8 score compared with 1 in 2 individuals using the LS7 score.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES This review summarizes race-based sleep health disparities between Asian Americans and other American racial groups and compares sleep outcomes between Asian American subgroups disaggregated by ethnicity and ancestral national origin. The study identifies gaps in the existing literature, analyzes barriers to studying Asian American sleep, and recommends topics for future research. METHODS A PubMed review of research on adult Asian American sleep was conducted. The articles included utilized actigraphy, polysomnography, and questionnaires to gather sleep health metrics. Information from these articles included data on sleep duration, sleep quality, sleep disturbances, and sleep disorders. RESULTS Most aggregated studies find Asian American adults experiencing lower sleep duration and poorer sleep quality compared to non-Hispanic White Americans and comparable or slightly higher sleep duration compared to Black Americans. Within Asian Americans, first-generation immigrants report better sleep quality than subsequent generations. East Asian Americans may experience better sleep outcomes compared to Southeast Asian Americans. Obstructive sleep apnea is critically underreported in South Asian Americans. CONCLUSIONS Significantly more research is required in Asian American sleep disparities, specifically in South and Southeast Asian Americans. Sleep disparities between Asian Americans and other racial groups are impacted by perceived discrimination, poor mental health, and cultural attitudes toward sleep. The observed within-group disparities of Asian American sleep may be attributed to socioeconomic status and generational status/acculturation. Abstract
Few empirical studies have explored the links between sleep and religion and no research has examined how religious individuals view these links. This article contributes to the literature by drawing on in-depth interviews with 31 midlife Israeli Muslims and Jews who describe themselves as religious or very religious. Findings indicate that respondents shared the view that sleep is important for health and wellbeing, as well as for religious practice and the proper worship of God. Their accounts clarified that religious observance entails a set of social rules and prescriptions as well as beliefs that may affect sleep behaviour and sleep outcomes. Traditional prayer times affected sleep duration for observant Muslims and Jews because respondents woke up early for prayer but could not always retire early enough so as to obtain a sufficient amount of sleep. Religion also dictated a preferred sleep position, to which participants became accustomed and found to be helpful. Respondents maintained that their deep faith in God and the practice of praying helped reduce stress, which contributed to sleep quality. However, among Muslims, missing prayers could arouse feelings of guilt and unease, thus affecting sleep quality. The article concludes that religion affects the sleep of both Muslims and Jews, but these effects vary by how individuals practice their religion and by how religiosity intersects with other social categories, such as gender. Future studies could enrich understanding of the social determinants of sleep by designing research inspired by lay persons' insights into the association between religion and sleep.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES This study was designed to investigate the association between psychosocial factors and self-reported sleep duration and two indices of sleep quality in a racially and ethnically diverse sample of adults. We investigated the relations between both rumination and anxiety sensitivity with these self-reported sleep outcomes. We also examined rumination and anxiety sensitivity as moderators of three race- and ethnicity-related stressors: discrimination, acculturative stress, and socioeconomic status. METHODS In a cross-sectional design, we assessed 1326 adults (ages 18-48 years) selected for self-reported racial and ethnic minority status. Regression analyses were used to examine the associations between demographic, social/environmental stressors, depression severity, rumination, and anxiety sensitivity and three sleep outcomes: sleep duration, sleep quality subscale, and global sleep quality. RESULTS Our findings supported the hypothesized role of rumination as an amplification factor for the influence of race- and ethnicity-related stressors on sleep duration and quality. Rumination was associated with all three sleep outcomes (sleep duration, sleep quality subscale, and global sleep quality) and was a moderator of the associations between discrimination and all 3 sleep outcomes. Anxiety sensitivity was not consistently associated with these sleep outcomes. Depression symptoms did not account for these findings. CONCLUSIONS If confirmed in longitudinal study, our findings introduce a potentially important treatment target-rumination-for addressing sleep disparities in prevention or intervention models. Rumination appears to amplify the negative sleep consequences of race- and ethnicity-related stressors and is a modifiable treatment target.

Abstract
We aimed to provide objectively measured sleep parameters across lifespan by sex and race in a national representative sample of US population. The study included 11,279 participants 6 years and older from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011–2014, who had at least 3 days of valid sleep parameters calculated from 7-day 24-h accelerometer recording. Sleep duration showed a U-shaped association with age and reached the minimum at age 40 and started to increase again around age 50. The clock time for sleep onset (CTSO) delayed with age and reached the maximum at about age 20. CTSO then advanced until age 50, leveled off until age 70, then advanced again after age 70. Sleep efficiency showed an overall decreasing trend across the lifespan but stabilized from age 30 to about age 60. US young adults in age 20 s are the ones who slept at the latest around midnight, while the middle aged US residents between 40 and 50 years old slept the least. Females generally present longer sleep duration than males, while more likely to have later sleep onset, particularly at older ages. Non-Hispanic Blacks showed worse sleep characteristics, i.e. sleep later, sleep shorter, and sleep less efficiently, compared to other racial groups. In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights on the characteristics of sleep habits of residents of the United States by using objectively measurements of sleep parameters and will help guide personalized advice on sleep hygiene.

Abstract
Sleep is entwined across many physiologic processes in the brain and periphery, thereby exerting tremendous influence on our well-being. Yet sleep exists in a social-environmental context. Contextualizing sleep health with respect to its determinants—from individual- to societal-level factors—would enable neuroscientists to more effectively translate sleep health into clinical practice. Key challenges and opportunities pertain to (i) recognizing and exploring sleep’s functional roles, (ii) clarifying causal mechanisms in relation to key outcomes, (iii) developing richer model systems, (iv) linking models to known contextual factors, and (v) leveraging advances in multisensory technology. Meeting these challenges and opportunities would help transcend disciplinary boundaries such that social-environmental considerations related to sleep would become an ever-greater presence in the clinic.
