Pomegranate seed oil in food industry: Extraction, characterization, and applications

Physicochemical and chemosensory properties of pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) seeds under various oven-roasting conditions

This study investigated the effects of oven-roasting temperature (160, 180, and 200 ℃) and time (5, 10, 15, and 20 min) on pomegranate seeds. Physicochemical properties, such as color (L*, a*, and b* values), browning index (BI), total phenolic and flavonoid contents, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging capacity, and chemosensory properties, including taste and volatile compounds, were analyzed. The L* and a* values, and level of sourness, umami, sweetness, and terpenes decreased, whereas the b* value, BI, and level of saltiness, bitterness, furan derivatives, pyrazines, and sulfur-containing compounds, increased with roasting time. The findings of this study showed that the positive roasting conditions for pomegranate seeds were 10-20 min at 160 ℃ and, 5-10 min at 180 ℃. This study is expected to be used as a primary reference for selecting the optimal oven-roasting conditions in which positive effects appear and for developing products utilizing pomegranate seeds.

Chromatographic and Thermal Characteristics, and Hydrolytic and Oxidative Stability of Commercial Pomegranate Seed Oil

The current investigations were aimed at the determination of the hydrolytic and oxidative stability of commercial pomegranate seed oils provided by four different producers, and to assess the oils' primary quality parameters. During storage, many changes occur in oils that can significantly affect their quality. The oils were tested for acid and peroxide values, fatty acid profile, and their distribution between the sn-1,3 and sn-2 positions of triacylglycerols. The oxidative stability was also determined, and melting curves were plotted for the oils. The analyzed oils were stored for one month in a dark place at refrigerator temperature. Based on the obtained results, it was found that the acid values for most oils did not exceed the permissible level determined by the Codex Alimentarius. However, in all oils, the peroxide value exceeded the permissible level set by the standard EN ISO 3960:2017-03 and the Codex Alimentarius after the one-month storage period. The examined pomegranate seed oils were found to be valuable sources of polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially punicic acid, which was the most abundant fatty acid present in these oils. In all analyzed oils, linoleic acid predominated in the sn-2 position of the triacylglycerols. Pomegranate seed oils did not exhibit good oxidative stability, as the oxidation induction times for all tested oils were very short. The storage period significantly affected the content of the primary oxidation products and oxidative stability of the oils.

Engineering Yarrowia lipolytica for Sustainable Production of the Pomegranate Seed Oil-Derived Punicic Acid

Punicic acid is a conjugated linolenic acid with various biological activities including antiobesity, antioxidant, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory effects. It is often used as a nutraceutical, dietary additive, and animal feed. Currently, punicic acid is primarily extracted from pomegranate seed oil, but it is restricted due to the extended growth cycle, climatic limitations, and low recovery level. There have also been reports on the chemical synthesis of punicic acid, but it resulted in a mixture of structurally similar isomers, requiring additional purification/separation steps. In this study, a comprehensive strategy for the production of punicic acid in Yarrowia lipolytica was implemented by pushing the supply of linoleic acid precursors in a high-oleic oil strain, expressing multiple copies of the fatty acid conjugase gene from Punica granatum, engineering the acyl-editing pathway to improve the phosphatidylcholine pool, and promoting the assembly of punicic acid in the form of triglycerides. The optimal strain with high oil production capacity and a significantly increased punicic acid ratio accumulated 3072.72 mg/L punicic acid, accounting for 6.19% of total fatty acids in fed-batch fermentation, providing a viable, sustainable, and green approach for punicic acid production to substitute plant extraction and chemical synthesis production.

The Effects of Pomegranate Seed Oil on Mild Cognitive Impairment

Background

In recent years, there has been a growing interest, supported by many experimental and clinical studies, about the benefits of pomegranate in preventing various pathologic conditions, including brain neurodegeneration. The pomegranate seed oil (PSO) contains high levels of fatty acids that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Objective

Due to the lack of clinical trials, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of PSO on cognition of people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

Methods

Eighty people with the diagnosis of MCI were randomized forty to take 5 drops of PSO and follow the Mediterranean Diet (MeDi) and forty just followed MeDi. All were examined with an extensive neuropsychological assessment before and after one year of treatment.

Results

The results showed that the participants who took the PSO had statistically significantly better global cognition (p = 0.004), verbal episodic memory (p = 0.009), and processing and executive functions (p < 0.001) in contrast with the participants who did not take it.

Conclusions

In conclusion, the PSO can be beneficial for people with MCI as it is helpful for some important cognitive domains. As PSO is a natural product that does not burden the human body, it can be used by people with MCI and be a significant and promising part of holistic approaches for the prevention of dementia.

Evaluation of the quality features of electrospray-coated pineapple slices with pomegranate and grape seed oil-enriched emulsions

The quality characteristics of pineapple slices coated with emulsions enriched with pomegranate seed oil (PSO) and grape seed oil (GSO) by electrospray coating (ESC) and dip-coating (DC) methods were investigated. The ESC method was evaluated as an alternative to conventional DC. Pineapple slices were stored in clear polystyrene cups for seven days at 5 °C and 80% RH. The weight loss (%), pH, titratable acidity, color, firmness, total antioxidant activity (TAA), total phenolic content (TPC), microbiological, and sensory qualities of fresh-cut pineapple slices were evaluated. Coated samples had significantly lower weight loss values than the non-coated samples after 7 days of storage. The usage of GSO-enriched emulsion with the ESC method was found to be more successful in preserving the titratable acidity. Although all the samples exhibited a significant decrease in yellowness (b*), the electrospray-coated pineapple slices had the highest. Incorporating GSO into the emulsions helped protect the tissue of the fresh-cut pineapples, regardless of the coating method used. The TPC and TAA values of the samples coated by the ESC method with emulsions enriched with PSO showed a lower decrease compared to other treatments. It was determined that the ESC method was more successful in preserving the sensory qualities of fresh-cut pineapples. These findings suggested that using ESC as a coating method with EO-enriched emulsions has positive effects on the quality features of fresh-cut pineapples.

The Extraction and Impact of Essential Oils on Bioactive Films and Food Preservation, with Emphasis on Antioxidant and Antibacterial Activities-A Review

Essential oils, consisting of volatile compounds, are derived from various plant parts and possess antibacterial and antioxidant properties. Certain essential oils are utilized for medicinal purposes and can serve as natural preservatives in food products, replacing synthetic ones. This review describes how essential oils can promote the performance of bioactive films and preserve food through their antioxidant and antibacterial properties. Further, this article emphasizes the antibacterial efficacy of essential oil composite films for food preservation and analyzes their manufacturing processes. These films could be an attractive delivery strategy for improving phenolic stability in foods and the shelf-life of consumable food items. Moreover, this article presents an overview of current knowledge of the extraction of essential oils, their effects on bioactive films and food preservation, as well as the benefits and drawbacks of using them to preserve food products.

Anti-obesity potential of a yogurt functionalized with a CLNA-rich pomegranate oil

Pomegranate oil is rich in conjugated linolenic acids, compounds which have attracted attention due to their potential applicability in obesity management as they are capable of modulating leptin and adiponectin secretion and regulate fatty acids storage and glucose metabolism. Among the possible bioactive foodstuffs capable of delivering these bioactive compounds yogurts have shown potential. Thus, the purpose of this work was to develop functional yogurts through the addition of pomegranate oil either in its free or encapsulated (used as a protective strategy against oxidation and gastrointestinal tract passage) forms. To that end, the pomegranate oil (free and encapsulated) was incorporated in yogurt and the functional yogurt capacity to modulate hepatic lipid accumulation, adipocyte metabolism (in terms of lipolysis, and adipokines secretion) and immune response was evaluated. The results obtained showed that the pomegranate oil's incorporation led to an improvement in the yogurts' nutritional values, with a reduction in its atherogenic and thrombogenic indexes (more than 78% for atherogenic and 76% for thrombogenic index) and an enhancement of its hypocholesterolemic/hypercholesterolemic ratio (more than 62%) when compared to the control yogurt. Furthermore, data also showed for the first time how these functional yogurts promoted modulation of metabolic processes post GIT as they were capable of reducing by 40% triglycerides accumulation in steatosis-induced Hep G2 cells and by 30 % in differentiated adipocytes. Moreover, samples also showed a capacity to modulate the leptin and adiponectin secretion (56 % of increase in adiponectin) and reduce the IL-6 secretion (ca 44%) and TNF-α (ca 12%) in LPS-stimulated cells. Thus, the CLNA-rich yogurt here developed showed potential as a viable nutraceutical alternative for obesity management.

DNA fragmentation, chromosomal aberrations, and multi-toxic effects induced by nickel and the modulation of Ni-induced damage by pomegranate seed extract in Allium cepa L

This study was designed to assess the recovery effect of pomegranate seed extract (PSEx) against nickel (Ni)-induced damage in Allium cepa. Except for the control group treated with tap water, five experimental groups were exposed to 265 mg L-1 PSEx, 530 mg L-1 PSEx, 1 mg L-1 NiCI2, 265 mg L-1 PSEx + 1 mg L-1 NiCI2, and 530 mg L-1 PSEx + 1 mg L-1 NiCI2, respectively. The toxicity of Ni was examined through the analysis of physiological (germination percentage, weight gain, and root length), cytotoxicity (mitotic index), genotoxicity (micronucleus, chromosomal anomalies, and Comet test), and biochemical (malondialdehyde, proline, chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b contents, the activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase) parameters. Meristematic cell defects were also investigated. The NiCl2-DNA interaction was evaluated through spectral shift analysis. Values of all physiological parameters, mitotic index scores, and chlorophyll contents decreased while micronucleus frequency, DNA tail percentage, chromosomal anomalies, proline, MDA, and enzyme activities increased following Ni administration. According to the tail DNA percentage scale, Ni application caused "high damage" to DNA. Ni-induced chromosomal anomalies were fragment, sticky chromosome, vagrant chromosome, bridge, unbalanced chromatin distribution, reverse polarization, and nucleus with bud. NiCl2-DNA interaction caused a hyperchromic shift in the UV/Vis spectrum of DNA by spectral profile analysis. Ni exposure impaired root meristems as evidenced by the formation of epidermis cell damage, flattened cell nucleus, thickened cortex cell wall, and blurry vascular tissue. Substantial recovery was seen in all parameters with the co-administration of PSEx and Ni. Recovery effects in the parameters were 18-51% and 41-84% in the 265 mg L-1 PSEx + 1 mg L-1 NiCI2 and 530 mg L-1 PSEx + 1 mg L-1 NiCI2 groups, respectively. The Comet scale showed that PSEx applied with Ni reduced DNA damage from "high" to "moderate." Ni-induced thickened cortex cell wall and blurry vascular tissue damage disappeared completely when 530 mg L-1 PSEx was mixed with Ni. PSEx successfully reduced the negative effects of Ni, which can be attributed to its content of antioxidants and bioactive ingredients.

Comprehensive Review on Fruit Seeds: Nutritional, Phytochemical, Nanotechnology, Toxicity, Food Biochemistry, and Biotechnology Perspective

Fruit seeds are leftovers from a variety of culinary sectors. They are generally unutilized and contribute greatly to global disposals. These seeds not only possess various nutritional attributes but also have many heath-beneficial properties. One way to make use of these seeds is to extract their bioactive components and create fortified food items. Nowadays, researchers are highly interested in creating innovative functional meals and food components from these unconventional resources. The main objective of this manuscript was to determine the usefulness of seed powder from 70 highly consumed fruits, including Apple, Apricot, Avocado, Banana, Blackberry, Blackcurrant, Blueberry, Cherry, Common plum, Cranberry, Gooseberry, Jackfruit, Jamun, Kiwi, Lemon, Mahua, Mango, Melon, Olive, Orange, and many more have been presented. The nutritional attributes, phytochemical composition, health advantages, nanotechnology applications, and toxicity of these fruit seeds have been fully depicted. This study also goes into in-depth detailing on creating useful food items out of these seeds, such as bakery goods, milk products, cereal-based goods, and meat products. It also identifies enzymes purified from these seeds along with their biochemical applications and any research openings in this area.

Functional Compounds of Cold-Pressed Pomegranate Seed Oil: Fatty Acids and Phytosterols Profile as Quality Biomarkers for Origin Discrimination

Cold-pressed pomegranate seed oil (PSO) is a product of the extraction of non-edible pomegranate seeds. Its unique chemical composition in terms of both polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially punicic acid (PA), and secondary metabolites, such as phytosterols, tocopherols and phenols, make it an interesting functional ingredient for food enrichment. It is not clear if the biomarkers profile of PSO depends to factors connected to the geographical origin of seeds. This work presents a statistical comparative analysis, concerning biomolecules composition and geographical origin of 32 commercial cold-pressed PSOs, performed by principal component analysis. The study discriminates between Turkish and Italian PSOs, on the base of the fatty acid profile and phytosterols, and not on the tocopherols and phenols. These results confirmed PA as the main characteristic biomarker of oil genuineness and, for the first time, disclosed a statistically relevant variability of phytosterols, which can be proposed as quality biomarkers for discrimination of geographical origins.

Assembly and analysis of the first complete mitochondrial genome of Punica granatum and the gene transfer from chloroplast genome

Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is one of the oldest fruits with edible, medicinal and ornamental values. However, there is no report on the mitochondrial genome of pomegranate. In this study, the mitochondrial genome of P. granatum was sequenced, assembled and analyzed in detail, while the chloroplast genome was assembled using the same set of data. The results showed that the P. granatum mitogenome had a multi branched structure, using BGI + Nanopore mixed assembly strategy. The total genome length was 404,807 bp, with the GC content of 46.09%, and there were 37 protein coding genes, 20 tRNA genes and three rRNA genes. In the whole genome, 146 SSRs were identified. Besides, 400 pairs of dispersed repeats were detected, including 179 palindromic, 220 forward and one reverse. In the P. granatum mitochondrial genome, 14 homologous fragments of chloroplast genome were found, accounting for 0.54% of the total length. Phylogenetic analysis showed that among the published mitochondrial genomes of related genera, P. granatum had the closest genetic relationship with Lagerstroemia indica of Lythraceae. The 580 and 432 RNA editing sites were predicted on 37 protein coding genes of mitochondrial genome using BEDTools software and online website PREPACT respectively, but all were from C to U, of which ccmB and nad4 gene were most frequently edited, with 47 sites. This study provides a theoretical basis for understanding the evolution of higher plants, species classification and identification, and will also be useful for further utilization of pomegranate germplasm resources.

Bigels as Delivery Systems of Bioactive Fatty Acids Present in Functional Edible Oils: Coconut, Avocado, and Pomegranate

Bioactive fatty acids possess several benefits for human health; however, these molecules show a reduced oxidative stability and consequently reduced bioavailability. This work aimed to develop novel bigels as a strategy to protect bioactive fatty acids present in three different vegetable oils with nutritional attributes (coconut oil, avocado oil, and pomegranate oil) during passage through the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). Bigels were prepared using monoglycerides-vegetable oil oleogel and carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogel. These bigels were analyzed in terms of structure and rheological characteristics. According to the rheological properties, bigels exhibited a solid-like behavior since G' was higher than G". The results showed that the proportion of oleogel was essential to the viscosity of the final formulation as an increase in this fraction was responsible for an increase in viscosity. The fatty acids profile was evaluated before and after simulated GIT. The bigels protected the fatty acids against degradation; in the case of coconut oil, the reduction of key fatty acids was 3 times lower; for avocado oil, 2 times lower; and for pomegranate oil, 1.7 times lower. These results suggest that bigels can be used as part of an important strategy for bioactive fatty acid delivery for food applications.

In-Depth Chemical Characterization of Punica granatum L. Seed Oil

Fruit seeds belonging to the pomegranate cultivar "Granata" were subjected to extraction and oily component analysis, with the aim of obtaining information about their composition. The presence of conjugated isomers of linolenic acid (CLNA isomers) in the oily phase extracted from the seeds gives a high added value to this part of the fruit, which is too often considered and treated as waste. The separated seeds were subjected to a classic Soxhlet extraction with n-hexane or extraction with supercritical CO₂, assisted by ethanol. The resulting oils were evaluated by ¹H and ¹³C-NMR and AP-MALDI-MS techniques. Differences in the triacylglycerols composition, with particular regard to punicic acid and other CLNA content, were studied in depth. Results showed the prevalence of punicic acid in the triacylglycerol mixture up to the 75%, with clear preponderance in the extract by supercritical fluids. Consequently, other CLNA isomers are, altogether, two-fold less represented in the supercritical extract than in the Soxhlet one. The two oily residues were subjected to solid phase extraction (SPE) and to HPLC-DAD analysis for the polyphenolic isolation and characterization. In addition to HPLC analysis, which showed different content and composition, DPPH analysis to evaluate the antiradical potential showed that the extract obtained with supercritical CO₂ was much more active.

Analysis of the Volatile Flavor Compounds of Pomegranate Seeds at Different Processing Temperatures by GC-IMS

This study sought to reveal the mechanism of flavor generation when pomegranate seeds are processed, as well as the contribution of volatile organic components (VOCs) to flavor formation. Gas chromatography–ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS), combined with relative odor activity (ROAV) and statistical methods, was used for the analysis. The results showed that 54 compounds were identified from 70 peaks that appeared in the GC-IMS spectrum. Then, the ROAV results showed 17 key volatile components in processing pomegranate seeds, and 7 flavor components with large differential contributions were screened out using statistical methods. These included γ-butyrolactone, (E)-3-penten-2-one (dimer), pentanal, 1-propanethiol, octanal, and ethyl valerate (monomer). It is suggested that lipid oxidation and the Maillard reaction may be the main mechanisms of flavor formation during the processing of pomegranate seeds. Furthermore, this study lays the experimental and theoretical foundations for further research on the development of flavor products from pomegranate seeds.

The Temperature Influence on Drying Kinetics and Physico-Chemical Properties of Pomegranate Peels and Seeds

Pomegranate is a fruit desirable for its nutritional and medicinal properties which has a great industrial potential that is yet under-explored. Notable for its integral use, the peels are used in medicinal infusions and the seeds consumed without restrictions. In this sense, the objective of this work is to determine the drying kinetics of pomegranate peels and seeds in a hot air circulation oven, at temperatures of 50, 60, and 70 °C, adjust mathematical models to experimental data, determine the effective diffusivities and thermodynamic properties of the process and the physicochemical characteristics of peels and seeds of fresh pomegranates and in their flours. Twelve models were used to adjust the drying kinetics, obtaining better results with the Diffusion Approximation model, Verma, and modified Henderson and Pabis. The effective diffusivities were well represented by an Arrhenius equation, with activation energies of 31.39 kJ/mol for seeds and 10.60 kJ/mol for peels. In the drying process, the seeds showed higher values of enthalpy, entropy, and Gibbs free energy concerning peels. Pomegranate peel and seed flours have proximal composition and distinct physicochemical characteristics, with high fiber, carbohydrate, and energy content. In addition, peel flours stand out for their mineral content, and seed flours do for their lipid and protein content.

Pomegranate Oil’s Potential as an Anti-Obesity Ingredient

In recent years, pomegranate oil has obtained more attention due to its content of conjugated linolenic acids and possible application in the prevention of many diseases. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the potential ability of pomegranate oil to modulate obesity-related metabolism and immune response using in vitro models. In this regard, pomegranate oil was characterized in terms of fatty acids profile, tocopherols and phytosterols, and antioxidant capacity. After evaluation of the safety profile, pomegranate oil’s capacity to modulate obesity-related metabolism was evaluated through adipolysis and adipokines secretion quantification in 3T3-L1 differentiated adipocytes and hepatic lipid accumulation assay in Hep G2 hepatocytes. The immunomodulatory activity was evaluated in Caco-2 cells by quantification of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α. This oil showed high antioxidant capacity and was mainly composed of conjugated fatty acid, namely punicic acid. Its chemical composition was responsible for its capacity to reduce the lipid accumulation in Hep G2 cells and 3T3-L1 differentiated adipocytes. In short, pomegranate oil shows great potential for the development of functional foods and nutraceuticals targeting obesity.

Assessment of physicochemical, functional, thermal, and phytochemical characteristics of refined rice bran wax

The drastic increase in the utilization and conversion of biomass has been an effect of sustainability and circular economy in the food processing sector. Rice bran wax (RBW), an intermediate by-product of rice bran oil refining industries, has been one of the underutilized waste materials. The FT-IR analysis showed that RBW contains many similar compounds to that of beeswax (BW) and carnauba wax (CW). The DSC thermographs showed melting and crystallization temperatures of RBW as 78.55 and 73.43 °C, respectively, lesser than CW and more than BW. The peak profiling of XRD diffractographs has shown full-width at half-maximum of CW and RBW as 0.61 and 0.45, respectively, indicating distortion in crystal formation. The sequential extracts of RBW in hexane, dichloromethane, and ethylacetate have shown antimicrobial activity against E. coli and S. typhi. The research provides a baseline for extraction and separation of specialty compounds from RBW for by-product utilization.

Punicic Acid and Its Role in the Prevention of Neurological Disorders: A Review

Millions of people worldwide are affected by neurodegenerative diseases (NDs). NDs are characterized by progressive damage and death of nerve cells accompanied by high levels of inflammatory biomarkers and oxidative stress conditions. Punicic acid, the main bioactive component of pomegranate (Punica granatum) seed oil, is an omega-5 isomer of conjugated α-linoleic acid that has shown strong anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects that contributes towards its positive effect against a wide arrange of diseases. Punicic acid decreases oxidative damage and inflammation by increasing the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors. In addition, it can reduce beta-amyloid deposits formation and tau hyperphosphorylation by increasing the expression of GLUT4 protein and the inhibition of calpain hyperactivation. Microencapsulated pomegranate, with high levels of punicic acid, increases antioxidant PON1 activity in HDL. Likewise, encapsulated pomegranate formulations with high levels of punicic acid have shown an increase in the antioxidant PON1 activity in HDL. Because of the limited brain permeability of punicic acid, diverse delivery formulations have been developed to enhance the biological activity of punicic acid in the brain, diminishing neurological disorders symptoms. Punicic acid is an important nutraceutical compound in the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Huntington’s disease.

Antioxidant Effect of Moroccan Pomegranate (Punica granatum L. Sefri Variety) Extracts Rich in Punicalagin against the Oxidative Stress Process

Natural antioxidants products are widely distributed in food and medicinal plants. These natural antioxidants, especially polyphenols, exhibit a wide range of biological activities including anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-atherosclerosis activities. Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is a rich source of polyphenolic components. The purpose of this study was to characterize the phenolic composition and flavonoids and anthocyanin content of different parts (peel and aril) of the Sefri variety of pomegranate. Our results showed that Peel extract was richer in these compounds than that of the Arils, especially in Punicalagin (A and B). DPPH free radical scavenging, reducing power (FRAP), β-carotene bleaching, and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assays revealed a greater dose-dependent activity of pomegranate peel phenolic extract (PPPE) compared to pomegranate aril phenolic extract (PAPE). PPPE was also more potent than PAPE concerning its ability to inhibit conjugated diene formation and to reduce α-tocopherol disappearance induced by CuSO4-mediated LDL peroxidation. Interestingly, both extracts (PPPE and PAPE) significantly inhibited lipid peroxidation and the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in stressed J82 human bladder cancer cells. These results reflect the protective effects that this Moroccan variety of pomegranate can provide against the development of metabolic disorder, cancer, atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular disease. Given these properties, further studies should be undertaken to investigate possible applications of Sefri pomegranate extracts in the fields of food preservation and health supplements.

Novel trends in extraction and optimization methods of bioactives recovery from pomegranate fruit biowastes: Valorization purposes for industrial applications

Pomegranate biowastes present potential economic value worldwide owing to their several health benefits mediated by a complex mixture of unique bioactives. The exploitation of these bioactives has motivated the exploration of eco-friendly, efficient, and cost-effective extraction techniques to maximize their recovery. The current review aims to provide updated technical information about bioactives extraction mechanisms from pomegranate wastes (seeds and peel), their advantages and disadvantages, and factors towards optimization. A comparative overview of the modern green extraction techniques viz., supercritical fluid extraction, ultrasound-assisted extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, pressurized liquid extraction, and eutectic solvent mixture as alternatives to conventional extraction methods for seeds and peel is presented. Approaches focused on biowastes modification for properties improvement are also discussed. Such comprehensive review shall provide the best valorization practices of pomegranate biowastes and its application in food and non-food areas focusing on original methods, innovation, protocols, and development to be considered for other fruit biowastes.

Nutritional and Bioactive Components of Pomegranate Waste Used in Food and Cosmetic Applications: A Review

Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is a fruit that is rich in bioactive compounds that has a biowaste (rind and seed) with the potential to be converted into value-added products in a wide variety of applications. Recent studies have demonstrated the potent antioxidant and antimicrobial effects of using pomegranate rind and seed as natural food additives, thus making researchers incorporate them into bioplastics and edible coatings for food packaging. Additionally, these components have shown great plasticizing effects on packaging materials while extending the shelf life of food through active packaging. Even within skin health applications, pomegranate seed oil and its bioactive compounds have been particularly effective in combating UV-induced stresses on animal skin and in-vitro models, where cells and microorganisms are separated from the whole organism. They have also aided in healing wounds and have shown major anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anti-bacterial properties. This review highlights all of the relevant and recent food and skin health applications found in the value-added conversion of pomegranate biowaste. The lack of research in particular areas and future outlook are also discussed.

Technologies and Extraction Methods of Polyphenolic Compounds Derived from Pomegranate (Punica granatum) Peels. A Mini Review

The interest in using plant by-product extracts as functional ingredients is continuously rising due to environmental and financial prospects. The development of new technologies has led to the achievement of aqueous extracts with high bioactivity that is preferable due to organic solvents nonuse. Recently, widely applied and emerging technologies, such as Simple Stirring, Pressure-Applied Extraction, Enzymatic Extraction, Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction, Pulsed Electric Fields, High Hydrostatic Pressure, Ohmic Heating, Microwave Assistant Extraction and the use of “green” solvents such as the deep eutectic solvents, have been investigated in order to contribute to the minimization of disadvantages on the extraction of bioactive compounds. This review is focused on bioactive compounds derived from pomegranate (Punica granatum) peels and highlighted the most attractive extraction methods. It is believed that these findings could be a useful tool for the pomegranate juices industry to apply an effective and economically viable extraction process, transforming a by-product to a high added value functional product.
