Synthesis of Fe3O4@CuS@Ni2P-CNTs magnetic nanocomposite for sonochemical-assisted sorption and pre-concentration of trace Allura Red from aqueous samples prior to HPLC-UV detection: CCD-RSM design

Simple and rapid determination of tartrazine in fake saffron using the metal organic framework (Fe SA MOF@CNF) by HPLC/PDA

The present study of a novel metal-organic framework containing Fe single atoms doped on electrospun carbon nanofibers (Fe SA-MOF@CNF) based on dispersive micro solid phase extraction (D-μ-SPE) using HPLC-PDA for detection tartrazine in fake saffron samples was designed. The Fe SA-MOF@CNF sorbent was extensively characterized through various techniques including N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The specific area of surface of the sorbent was 577.384 m2/g. The study variables were optimized via the central composite design (CCD), which included a sorbent mass of 15 mg, a contact time of 6 min, a pH of 7.56, and a tartrazine concentration of 300 ng/ml. Under the optimum condition, the calibration curve of this method was linear in the range of 5-1000 ng/mL, with a correlation coefficient of 0.992. The LOD and LOQ values were ranged 0.38-0.74 and 1.34-2.42 ng/ml, respectively. This approach revealed significant improvements, including high extraction recovery (98.64), recovery rates (98.43-102.72%), and accuracy (RSDs < 0.75 to 3.6%). the enrichment factors were obtained in the range of 80.6-86.4 with preconcentration factor of 22.3. Consequently, the D-μ-SPE method based on synthesized Fe SA-MOF@CNF could be recommended as a sustainable sorbent for detecting tartrazine in saffron samples.

α and γ Alumina Spheres for Azo Dye (Allura Red) Removal from Aqueous Media

Allura red or Red 40 (R40) is a dye widely used in the food, textile, and pharmaceutical industries; it is considered dangerous because it is soluble in water, and it has high toxicity and resistance to natural degradation. Several advanced wastewater treatments have been shown to be effective for R40 removal but some of them present disadvantages such as by-products obtention, high energy consumption, and high cost of the reactants used in the removal process. In the present work, α-Alumina (Alu) and γ-Alu spheres were synthesized by the encapsulation method. The prepared spheres were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM/EDS, and SBET, and it was determined the presence of only inorganic bonds from ceramic material, and the amorphous alumina was observed in spheres with a smooth and uniform surface and with pores. R40 adsorption kinetics and isotherms were performed, as well as material regeneration for consequent sorption cycles. Sorption tests for R40 removal were carried out under different conditions of initial concentration, pH value, and the presence of interfering ions. The maximal sorption capacity of the synthetized α- and γ-Alu spheres were situated between 0.1765 and 18.9865 mg/g. Different kinetic and isothermal equations were applied and finally, the experimental data was described by Elovich and Freundlich models. The γ-Alu spheres after five heat treatment regeneration cycles showed stable behavior and potential re-use in new sorption processes with R40 removal >97.7% at pH 3 and >85.6% at $C_0$  =10 mg/L. The obtained results showed that the γ-Alu spheres are novel, alternative, and sustainable synthesized materials for the advanced treatment of wastewater by adsorption process for the removal of Allura red azo dye in aqueous media.

Experimental modelling studies on the removal of dyes and heavy metal ions using ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles

The presence of dyes and heavy metals in water sources as pollutants is harmful to human and animal health. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4) nanoparticles (ZF-NPs) due to their outstanding properties including cost-effectiveness, availability, and applicability for removal of auramine O (AO), methylene blue (MB), and Cd (II). The effect of the main operating parameters such as AO concentration, MB concentration, Cd (II) concentration, adsorbent amount, solution pH, and sonication time was optimized by the response surface methodology (RSM). Optimal conditions were obtained at adsorbent amount of 0.25 g, pH = 6, sonication time of 15 min, and concentration of 15 mg L-1, and more than 91.56% were removed from all three analytes. The adsorption of AO, MB, and Cd (II) onto ZF-NPs followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and the equilibrium data fitted well with Langmuir isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacities of ZF-NPs for AO, MB and Cd (II) were as high as 201.29 mg g-1, 256.76 mg g-1 and 152.48 mg g-1, respectively. Also, the reuse of the adsorbent was investigated, and it was found that the adsorbent can be used for up to five cycles. Based on the results of interference studies, it was found that different ions do not have a significant effect on the removal of AO, MB, and Cd (II) in optimal conditions. The ZF-NPs was investigated successfully to remove AO, MB, and Cd (II) from environmental water samples. The results of this study showed that ZF-NPs can be used as a suitable adsorbent to remove AO, MB, and Cd (II) from aqueous solution.

A reusable mesoporous adsorbent for efficient treatment of hazardous triphenylmethane dye wastewater: RSM-CCD optimization and rapid microwave-assisted regeneration

In this research, mesoporous calcium aluminate nanostructures (meso-CaAl2O4) were synthesized using a citric acid-assisted sol-gel auto-combustion process as the potential adsorbent to eliminate toxic triphenylmethane dye malachite green (MG) from synthetic/real effluent. The surface morphology of meso-CaAl2O4 was highly porous with nanometric size and non-homogeneous surface. The specific surface area, total pore volume, and BJH pore diameter of meso-CaAl2O4 were 148.5 m2 g-1, 1.39 cm3 g-1, and 19 nm, respectively. The meso-CaAl2O4 also showed a very high heat resistance, due to losing only 7.95% of its weight up to 800 °C, which is mainly related to the moisture loss. The optimal adsorption conditions were obtained based on response surface methods (RSM)-central composite design (CCD) techniques. The Langmuir isotherm model was used for fitting the adsorption measurements, which presented 587.5 mg g-1 as the maximum adsorption capacity of the dye. The data obtained from the adsorption kinetics model were found to correspond to the pseudo-second-order model. Also, the thermodynamic parameters including enthalpy change (ΔH°), entropy change (ΔS°), and Gibbs free energy change (ΔG°) indicated that MG dye adsorption by the meso-CaAl2O4 was feasible, endothermic, and occurred spontaneously. Furthermore, the meso-CaAl2O4 was regenerated by microwave irradiation under 900 W at 6 min, and the MG dye removal efficiency was remained over 90% after the five cycles of microwave regeneration.

Highly effective pre-concentration of thymol and carvacrol using nano-sized magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer based on experimental design optimization and their trace determination in summer savoury, Origanum majorana and Origanum vulgare extracts

To ascertain thymol and carvacrol in pharmaceutical syrups, a valid and effective magnetic molecular imprinted polymer dispersive solid phase microextraction (MMIP-DSPME) process was developed in this study, which was in combination with a high performance liquid chromatography-ultra violet (HPLC-UV) technique for the assessment of thymol and carvacrol separation and pre-concentration. Contact time, eluent kind and volume, pH, the mass of the MMIP were all taken into consideration as key factors. Design expert and multi-objective response surface methodology (RSM) were used to optimize these variables. The mass of the MMIP, sample pH, eluent kind, time of sorption, the volume of eluent, and time of elution were 10 mg, 6, acetonitrile, 28 min, 200 µL, and 5.5 min, respectively, for the maximum extraction recovery of the analytes. The limit of detection (LOD) was 0.042 ng mL^-1 at the optimal conditions, while the value for the limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.140 ng mL^-1. At the optimized conditions for thymol and carvacrol, the suggested MMIP sorbent had sorption capacities of 64.1 and 72.6 mg g^-1, respectively. Furthermore, for triplicate measurements, the linear dynamic range (LDR) was 0.40-5000 ng mL^-1, and the method's accuracy (RSD %) was 6.26%. The saturation magnetization for the MMIP was 19.0 emu g^-1 obtained by VSM, allowing the sorbent to be separated quickly. The sorption experiments confirmed the large sorption capacity of the MMIP for thymol and carvacrol, as well as its homogeneous binding sites. The extraction recovery for thymol and carvacrol was 96.9-103.8% and 96.6-105.4%, respectively, at all spiked amounts (20, 100, 200, and 500 ng mL^-1). The findings of seven desorption-regeneration cycles using MMIP demonstrated the high stability of the sorbent. The MMIP revealed a particular behavior of sorption for thymol and carvacrol, implying a selective, simple, effective, and flexible analytical method.

Greener organic synthetic methods: Sonochemistry and heterogeneous catalysis promoted multicomponent reactions

Ultrasound is an essential technique to improve organic synthesis from the point of view of green chemistry, as it can promote better yields and selectivities, in addition to shorter reaction times when compared to the conventional methods. Heterogeneous catalysis is another pillar of sustainable chemistry being the recycling and reuse of the catalysts one of its great advantage. In the other hand, multicomponent reactions provide the synthesis of structurally diverse compounds, in a one-pot fashion, without isolation and purification of intermediates. Thus, the combination of these protocols has proved to be a powerful tool to obtain biologically active organic compounds with lower costs, time and energy consumption. Herein, we provide a comprehensive overview of advances on methods of organic synthesis that have been reported over the past ten years with focus on ultrasound-assisted multicomponent reactions under heterogeneous catalysis. In particular, we present pharmacologically important N- and O-heterocyclic compounds, considering their synthetic methods using green solvents, and catalyst recycling.

Application of chitosan-alginate bio composite for adsorption of malathion from wastewater: Characterization and response surface methodology

Agricultural effluents in aqueous media have caused serious threats due to adversely affect human health and the ecosystem. In this study, the low-cost easily accessible chitosan-alginate adsorbent was prepared for the removal of malathion from agricultural effluents using microemulsion method. The adsorbent was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The optimum experimental conditions, including adsorbent dosage (0.05-0.25 g), contact time (5-25 min), and concentration of malathion (5-25 mg L^-1) at five levels were studied using the composite central design (CCD) based on the response surface methodology (RSM). The highest removal percentage was obtained 82.35 with an adsorbent dosage of 0.18 g, contact time of 20 min, and initial concentration of 10 mg L^-1. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied to assess the significance and adequacy of the model. The results revealed that quadratic model was proper for the prediction removal of malathion. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms were examined under optimal conditions. The Langmuir with a coefficient of determination (R²) = 0.99 and pseudo-second-order with R² = 0.99 were achieved as the best isotherm and kinetic models, respectively. The results showed that the chitosan-alginate biopolymer can be effective and affordable adsorbent for the removal of malathion from aqueous solution.

Application of ultrasound in combination with other technologies in food processing: A review

The use of non-thermal processing technologies has been on the surge due to ever increasing demand for highest quality convenient foods containing the natural taste & flavor and being free of chemical additives and preservatives. Among the various non-thermal processing methods, ultrasound technology has proven to be very valuable. Ultrasound processing, being used alone or in combination with other processing methods, yields significant positive results on the quality of foods, thus has been considered efficacious. Food processes performed under the action of ultrasound are believed to be affected in part by cavitation phenomenon and mass transfer enhancement. It is considered to be an emerging and promising technology and has been applied efficiently in food processing industry for several processes such as freezing, filtration, drying, separation, emulsion, sterilization, and extraction. Various researches have opined that ultrasound leads to an increase in the performance of the process and improves the quality factors of the food. The present paper will discuss the mechanical, chemical and biochemical effects produced by the propagation of high intensity ultrasonic waves through the medium. This review outlines the current knowledge about application of ultrasound in food technology including processing, preservation and extraction. In addition, the several advantages of ultrasound processing, which when combined with other different technologies (such as microwave, supercritical CO2, high pressure processing, enzymatic extraction, etc.) are being examined. These include an array of effects such as effective mixing, retention of food characteristics, faster energy and mass transfer, reduced thermal and concentration gradients, effective extraction, increased production, and efficient alternative to conventional techniques. Furthermore, the paper presents the necessary theoretical background and details of the technology, technique, and safety precautions about ultrasound.

A new approach for microextraction of trace albendazole sulfoxide drug from the samples of human plasma and urine, and water by the molecularly imprinted polymer nanoparticles combined with HPLC

In this research study, a method of dispersive-micro-solid phase extraction (D-µ-SPE) combined with molecularly imprinted polymer nanoparticles (MIP-NPs) with HPLC-UV was developed for the fast and selective detection of the trace amount of albendazole sulfoxide (ABZSO) in the biological samples. To investigate the effective factors on ABZSO microextraction by the method, central composite design (CCD) was utilized, and the optimum conditions for ABZSO microextraction were sample pH of 8.0, MIP-mass of 15 mg, sonication time of 12 min, and eluent (methanol) volume of 0.25 mL. Under the obtained optimal extraction conditions, the value for the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) was respectively showed to be 0.074 and 0.246 ng mL^-1. In addition, the calculated peak areas exhibited a linear relationship with the ABZSO concentration ranging from 0.4 to 4200 ng mL^-1. The analyses of the samples including human plasma and urine, and water were successfully performed by the usage of the D-µ-SPE method, which was a simple and sensitive technique and a suitable alternative for the analysis of ABZSO. In the analysis of ABZSO in various samples, the recoveries at various levels of ABZSO concentrations (50, 300, and 500 ng mL^-1) were in the range of 95.7-103.0 %, and the relative standard deviations (RSDs; n = 3) varied from 2.2 to 4.4%.

Ultrasound wave assisted removal of Ceftriaxone sodium in aqueous media with novel nano composite g-C3N4/MWCNT/Bi2WO6 based on CCD-RSM model

The aim of this study was ultrasound assisted removal of Ceftriaxone sodium (CS) based on CCD model. Using sonochemical synthesized Bi₂WO₆ implanted on graphitic carbon nitride/Multiwall carbon nanotube (g-C₃N₄/MWCNT/Bi₂WO₆). For this purpose g-C₃N₄/MWCNT/Bi₂WO₆ was synthesized and characterized using diverse approaches including XRD, FE-SEM, XPS, EDS, HRTEM, FT-IR. Then, the contribution of conventional variables including pH, CS concentration, adsorbent dosage and ultrasound contact time were studied by central composite design (CCD) under response surface methodology (RSM). ANOVA was employed to the variable factors, and the most desirable operational conditions mass provided. Drug adsorption yield of 98.85% obtained under these defined conditions. Through conducting five experiments, the proper prediction of the optimum point were examined. The respective results showed that RSD% was lower than 5% while the t-test confirmed the high quality of fitting. Langmuir isotherm equation fits the experimental data best and the removal followed pseudo-second order kinetics. The estimation of the experimentally obtained maximum adsorption capacities was 19.57 mg.g^- of g-C₃N₄/MWCNT/Bi₂WO₆ for CS. Boundary layer diffusion explained the mechanism of removal via intraparticle diffusion.

Microwave-Assisted Extraction of Trace Metals from Sediments using Dilute Hydrogen Peroxide and Dilute Nitric Acid Prior to their Determination by Inductively Couple Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry

Background and Objectives:

Contamination of aquatic sediments by trace metals is one of the global problems. This is because trace metals in sediments are persistent and nonbiodegradable. They may pose danger to flora and fauna since they can be released into freshwater systems. This study aimed at the development of microwave-assisted extraction using diluted hydrogen peroxide and nitric acid for extraction of trace elements from sediment samples prior to inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES) determination.

Methods:

Response surface methodology (RSM) based on the Box-Behnken design was used for the optimization of factors affecting the microwave-assisted extraction process. The optimum conditions, for quantitative extraction of trace metals such as Cd2+, Cu2+, Cr2+, Pb2+ and Zn2+ were 16 min, 1.5 mol L-1 and 15% for extraction time, nitric acid concentration and H2O2 concentration, respectively.

Results and Discussion:

Under optimized conditions, the accuracy of the method was evaluated by analyzing loamy clay certified reference materials (CRM052) and the recoveries were above 92%, suggesting that the obtained results were in good agreement with the certified values. The developed method has shown reproducibility (RSD < 5%), as well as relative low limits of detection (0.02-0.09 μg g-1) and limit of quantitation (0.07-0.3 μg g-1). The developed analytical method was applied for extraction and the determination of trace metals in freshwater sediment samples.

Conclusions:

The method displayed advantages such as simplicity, rapidity, environmentally friendly and safe compared to classical methods that are based on concentrated acids.

High-efficiency and recyclability of ramie degumming catalyzed by FeCl3 in organic solvent

Although traditional alkaline (TAL) process for ramie degumming is commonly used in the industry, it causes severe environmental concerns. In this work, an emerging organic solvent degumming process utilizing FeCl₃ catalyst (FeCl₃-OS) was developed in one step. The influences of FeCl₃-OS system on fiber properties (e.g. residual gum content, tenacity, degree of polymerization (DP), etc.) were evaluated, and the recyclability of degumming solution was also studied. The results indicated that ramie fiber could be isolated with FeCl₃-OS treatment (FeCl₃ 1.0 %, 200 ℃, 121 min), and the tenacity and residual gum content of refined fibers were 7.9 cN/dtex and 3.88 %, respectively. Fibers treated in FeCl₃-OS system were endowed better moisture sorption (9.2 %) and higher yield (75.2 %) compared with that in TAL system. Moreover, fibers with five cycles' treatment possessed outstanding performances, that was 4.44 cN/dtex of tenacity and 4.33 % of residual gum content, which fulfilled the requirements of the spinning process.

Performance evaluation of photolytic and electrochemical oxidation processes for enhanced degradation of food dyes laden wastewater

Wastewater containing dyes is considered as the top-priority pollutant when discharged into the environment. Herein, we report for the applicability of 254 nm ultraviolet light and electrochemical process using a titanium ruthenium oxide anode for the degradation of Allura red and erythrosine dyes. During the photolytic process, 95% of Allura red dye (50 ppm) was removed after 1 h at pH 12 and 35 °C, whereas 90% color removal of erythrosine dye (50 ppm) was achieved after 6 h of treatment at pH 6.0 and 30 °C. On the other hand, 99.60% of Allura red dye (200 ppm) was removed within 5 min by the electrochemical process applying a current density (5 mA cm^-2) at pH 5.0 and 0.1 mol L^-1 sodium chloride (NaCl) electrolytic medium. Similarly, 99.61% of erythrosine dye (50 ppm) degradation was achieved after 10 min at a current density of 8 mA cm^-2, pH 6.0, and 0.1 mol L^-1 of NaCl electrolyte. The minimum energy consumption value for Allura red and erythrosine dyes (0.196 and 0.941 kWh m^-3, respectively) was calculated at optimum current densities of 5 and 8 mA cm^-2. The results demonstrated that the electrochemical process is more efficient at removing dyes in a shorter time than the photolytic process since it generates powerful oxidants like the chlorine molecule, hypochlorous acid, and hypochlorite on the surface of the anode and initiates a chain reaction to oxidize the dyes molecules.

Elimination performance of methylene blue, methyl violet, and Nile blue from aqueous media using AC/CoFe2O4 as a recyclable magnetic composite

The present paper describes the sono-assisted adsorption (sono-adsorption) of methylene blue (MB), methyl violet (MV), and Nile blue (NB) from aqueous solution by AC/CoFe₂O₄ magnetic composite. FT-IR, TGA-DTG, VSM, XRD, TEM, SEM, EDX, Map, and Raman analysis were used to characterize the magnetic composite. The magnetization saturation value of AC/CoFe₂O₄ magnetic composite was determined to be 53.06 emu/g. Dye sono-adsorption efficiency was increased by increasing adsorbent dose, pH value, and contact time, but not dye concentration. Pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intra-particle diffusion models were used to study the kinetic behavior of the cationic dye sono-adsorption. The sono-adsorption kinetics was reasonably followed by pseudo-second-order model (R² > 0.998). The results showed that the Freundlich model (R² > 0.976) was more able to describe the sono-adsorption equilibrium behavior than Langmuir, D-R, and Scatchard models. The maximum sono-adsorption capacity of NB, MV, and MB was determined as 86.24, 83.90, and 87.48 mg/g, respectively. Based on the parameters derived from isotherm modeling (R_L, n, and E), the sono-adsorption process of cationic dyes is desirable and physical. An increase in NaCl concentration reduced the sono-adsorption efficiency for all dyes. Also, the adsorption-desorption of AC/CoFe₂O₄ magnetic was studied up to 10 stages, and it was confirmed that the sono-adsorption efficiency is acceptable up to the eight stage. AC/CoFe₂O₄ magnetic composite is, therefore, an affordable and recyclable adsorbent to remove the molecule of NB, MV, and MB dyes from aqueous media.

Sonochemical synthesis of high-performance Pd@CuNWs/MWCNTs-CH electrocatalyst by galvanic replacement toward ethanol oxidation in alkaline media

In this paper, a fast and effective method for the palladium (Pd) wire nanostructures synthesis with the great surface area through galvanic replacement reaction utilizing copper nanowires (CuNWS) as a template by the assistance of ultrasound under room temperature condition is proposed. A multifunctional catalyst with the mentioned nanostructure, Pd@CuNWs, and multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and chitosan (CH) as a binder was fabricated. To investigate the morphology and bulk composition of the prepared catalyst, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD), and Inductively Coupled Plasma atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-AES) were utilized. Various electrochemical techniques including chronoamperometry and cyclic voltammetry were employed for the electrocatalytic activity of ethanol electrooxidation and durability in basic solution. Electrochemical catalytic activity and durability evaluation results proved that the as-synthesized Pd@CuNWs/MWCNTs-CH has a super electrocatalytic activity compared to Pd/MWCNTs and Pd/C electrocatalysts for ethanol electrooxidation. Pd@CuNWs/MWCNTs-CH catalyst demonstrated substantially enhanced performance and long-term stability for ethanol electrooxidation in the basic solution in comparison to Pd/MWCNTs and commercial Pd/C demonstrated the potential in utilizing Pd@CuNWs/MWCNTs-CH as an efficient catalyst for ethanol oxidation. Additionally, thermodynamic and kinetic evaluations revealed that the Pd@CuNWs/MWCNTs-CH catalyst has lower activation energy compared to Pd/MWCNTs and Pd/C which leads to a lower energy barrier and an excellent charge transfer rate towards ethanol oxidation. Noticeably, the Pd@CuNWs/MWCNTs-CH presented excellent catalytic activities with high peak current density which was 9.5 times more than Pd/C, and more negative onset potential in comparison to Pd/C is acquired for ethanol electrooxidation denoting synergistic effect between CuNWs/MWCNs-CH and Pd. The Pd@CuNWs/MWCNTs-CH can be considered as a valid candidate among available electrocatalysts in direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs).

A dispersive micro solid-phase extraction (DMSPE) technique was developed using manganese-oxide nanoparticles loaded on activated carbon (Mn₃O₄-NPs-AC) as an effective sorbent combined with ultrasound for the extraction and determination of a trace amount of thymol and carvacrol in methanolic extracts of Thymus daenensis, Salvia officinalis, Stachys pilifera, Satureja khuzistanica and mentha, and water samples.

Simultaneous magnetic dispersive micro solid phase extraction of valsartan and atorvastatin using a CMC-coated Fe3O4 nanocomposite prior to HPLC-UV detection: multivariate optimization

In this study, a sensitive, rapid, accurate and practical procedure is established for determination of atorvastatin and valsartan from human biological fluids by dispersive micro solid phase extraction (D-μ-SPE) combined with HPLC-UV detector.

Magnetic dispersive micro-solid phase extraction with the CuO/ZnO@Fe3O4-CNTs nanocomposite sorbent for the rapid pre-concentration of chlorogenic acid in the medical extract of plants, food, and water samples

Effect of ultrasound transducer design on the acoustically-assisted supercritical fluid extraction of antioxidants from oregano

Power ultrasound is applied in food technology to intensify extraction processes, due to the phenomena ultrasonic energy induces in the medium, enhancing mass transfer. The purpose of this work was the acoustic characterization of four transducers of different geometries and the evaluation of their performance in the ultrasonically assisted supercritical fluid extraction of antioxidants from oregano. The transducers differed in the amount of energy transmitted into the medium. Designs varied from the base model (T1), a larger cylindrical headmass (T2), a stepped circular section sonotrode (T3) and a multiplate configuration (T4). The highest nominal power density provided according to the calorimetric method was for T4 (151.6 ± 7.1 W/L). The T2 produced a more uniform acoustic field and a higher acoustic pressure (150.6 ± 20.5 kPa). Both parameters had an impact on total phenolics and antioxidants extraction with CO₂ under supercritical conditions (35 MPa, 35 °C, 2.3% ethanol as co-solvent). T4 and T2 were equally efficient (4.0 ± 0.2 and 4.2 ± 0.2 mg GA/g) for phenolic extraction, and with respect to antioxidant capacity, the best performance was that of T4 (26.4 ± 1.1 μmol TE/g). Of the antioxidant compounds extracted, flavones and flavanones were identified. Therefore, transducer geometry influenced the amount and distribution of energy transmitted into the medium, thus determining the efficiency of the extraction process.

Ultrasound enhanced electrochemical oxidation of Alizarin Red S on boron doped diamond(BDD) anode:Effect of degradation process parameters

Textile wastewater is characterized by high toxicity, complex structure, and resistance to biodegradation. Therefore, advanced oxidation technologies have received extensive attention. However, it is usually difficult to achieve a desired degradation effect using a single technology. The combination of various advanced oxidation technologies is an important way to achieve efficient degradation of organic wastewater. The present investigation was focused on ultrasound enhanced electrochemical oxidation (US-EO) of typical anthracene Alizarin Red S dye on a boron doped diamond anode. Our work indicates that ultrasonic oxidation technology which is mainly based on cavitation, can produce strongly oxidizing active substances such as OH, HO₂, O, and H₂O₂, that accelerate the destruction of the dye molecular structure and achieve dye decolorization and mineralization. The effects on cavitation and decomposition of ARS by the parameters that affect degradation, including solution temperature, initial pH, and electrolytes, were examined. Results show that low temperature was more conducive to ultrasonic cavitation in the US-EO process; the degradation efficiency rate of EO was higher than that of US-EO when the solution temperature was above 45 °C. Ultrasonic cavitation was significantly more efficient in acid than in alkaline conditions. Almost 100% color removal and 86.07% COD removal was achieved for 100 mg L^-1 ARS concentration with a 0.05 M Na₂SO₄ electrolyte, temperature of 30 °C and pH of 4.97 after 3 h. GC-MS analysis showed that the intermediate products of ARS in the US-EO process were phthalic anhydride, PEAs and bisphenol A, which is eventually mineralized to CO₂ and H₂O.

Cu- and S- @SnO2 nanoparticles loaded on activated carbon for efficient ultrasound assisted dispersive µSPE-spectrophotometric detection of quercetin in Nasturtium officinale extract and fruit juice samples: CCD-RSM design

A simple, rapid, and efficient method of dispersive micro solid phase extraction (D-μ-SPE) combined with UV-Vis spectrophotometry via ultrasound-assisted (UA) was applied for the determination and preconcentration of quercetin in extract of watercress (Nasturtium officinale), fruit juice and water samples. The sorbent in this method was synthesized by doping copper and sulfide into the tetragonal structure of SnO₂-nanoparticles (Cu- and S- @SnO₂-NPs) and subsequently loading it on activated carbon (AC). The D-μ-SPE parameters with direct effect on the extraction efficiency of the targeted analyte, such as sample pH, volume of eluent, sorbent mass and ultrasound time were optimized using central composite design method. Under optimized conditions, the calibration graph for quercetin was linear in the range of 20-4000 ng mL^-1; the limit of detection and quantitation were 4.35 and 14.97 ng mL^-1, respectively and the enrichment factor was 95.24. Application of this method to analyze spiked extract, fruit juice and water samples resulted in acceptable recovery values ranging from 90.3% to 97.28% with intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviation values lower than 6.0% in all cases. Among the equilibrium isotherms tested, Langmuir was found to be the best fitted model with maximum sorption capacity of 39.37 mg g^-1, suggesting a homogeneous mode of sorption for quercetin.

A novel naphthalene carboxylic acid-based ionic liquid mixed disperser combined with ultrasonic-enhanced in-situ metathesis reaction for preconcentration of triclosan and methyltriclosan in milk and eggs

A microextraction method was developed based on utilization of a novel ionic liquid (IL) [C₄MIM][NCA] as disperser and conventional ILs as extractor (IL-IL-DLLME). This method was integrated with an in-situ metathesis reaction to achieve high extraction efficiency by eliminating the loss of analytes in the discarded disperser after microextraction. Ultrasonic energy was compared to traditional mechanical shaking to accelerate the in-situ metathesis reaction. A 3-min ultrasonic treatment provided similar extraction efficiency as a 120-min mechanical shaking. Due to their strong acidity and lower solubility than traditional hydrophilic ILs, utilization of [C₄MIM][NCA] in the IL-IL-DLLME procedure increased extraction recoveries (ERs) for triclosan (TCS) and methyltriclosan (MTCS) by 10-12% and also avoided an extra pH adjustment step. A series of operational parameters were optimized using single-factor screening and central composite design as follows: 65 µL extraction solvent, 150 µL [C₄MIM][BF₄] and [C₄MIM][NCA] (132/18, v/v, μL) as dispersive solvent, 0.16 g NH₄PF₆ and 3.3 min ultrasonic time. Under optimized conditions with a fortification of 100 µg kg^-1, ERs were 92.6-93.4% for TCS and 92.7-94.2% for MTCS in bovine milk and chicken egg samples. LODs for TCS and MTCS were 0.16-0.24 µg kg^-1 and the enrichment factors were 21.8-23.1. Inter- and intra-day precisions had relative standard deviations of 3.3-5.4% for the optimized method. Overall, this newly developed IL-IL-DLLME method was effective for detecting trace levels of TCS and MTCS in real-world, animal-based foods. Prominent advantages of the new method include high precision and accuracy, high extraction efficiency, simple analytical operations, and no use of organic solvents making the procedure environmentally benign.

Ultrasound wave assisted adsorption of congo red using gold-magnetic nanocomposite loaded on activated carbon: Optimization of process parameters

In this study, gold-magnetic nanocomposite in the presence of ultrasound wave assisted was synthesized and loaded on activated carbon (Au-Fe₃O₄-NCs-AC) by simple, fast and low-cost process. This novel material was applied for ultrasound assisted adsorption of congo red (CR) as model of toxic and even carcinogenic substance from aqueous solution. The detail of morphology and identity of Au-Fe₃O₄-AC was characterized by SEM and TEM techniques and correlation among response to variables such as pH (2-10), adsorbent mass (0.005-0.025 g), initial CR concentration (10-30 mg L^-1) and ultrasound time (2-6 min) was investigated by response surface methodology (RSM) under central composite design (CCD). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) exhibit a high R² value of 0.999 and confirm suitability of constructed second-order regression model for excellent evaluation and prediction of the experimental data. The interaction and main factor and optimum conditions of the under study process were determined from response surface plots based on desirability function. The maximum CR adsorption were achieved at pH of 4, 15 mg L^-1 of CR, 0.017 g of Au-Fe₃O₄-AC and 5 min sonication which owing to 99.49% removal efficiency is highly recommended for future CR removal from different matrixes. Adsorption kinetic follow second-order rate expression in combination to inter particle diffusion and equilibrium adsorption data best represented by the Langmuir isotherm with maximum mono-layer adsorption capacity of 43.88 mg g^-1.
