A green and facile synthesis for rGO/Ag nanocomposites using one-step chemical co-reduction route at ambient temperature and combined first principles theoretical analyze

Nano-composite rGO-Ag-Cu-Ni mediated photocatalytic degradation of anthracene and benzene

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are omnipresent, persistent, and carcinogenic pollutants continuously released in the atmosphere due to the rapid increase in population and industrialization worldwide. Hence, there is an ultimate rise in concern about eliminating the toxic PAHs and their related aromatic hydrocarbons from the air, water, and soil environment by employing efficient removal technologies using nanoparticles as a catalyst. Here, the degradation of selective PAHs viz., anthracene and benzene using laboratory synthesized rGO-Ag-Cu-Ni nanocomposite (catalyst) was studied. Characterization studies revealed the nanocomposites exhibited surface plasma resonance at 350 - 450 nm, confirming the presence of Ag, Cu, and Ni metal ions embedded on the reduced graphene substrate. It was found that the nanocomposites synthesized were spherical, amorphous in nature, and aggregated together with measurements ranging from 423 to 477 nm. An SEM-EDX analysis of the nanocomposite demonstrated that it contained 25.13% O, 14.24% Ni, 27.79% Cu, and 32.84% Ag, which confirms the synthesis of the nanocomposite. Crystalline, sharp nanocomposites of average size 17-41 nm with an average diameter of 118.5 nm (X-ray diffraction and DLS) were observed. FTIR spectra showed that the nanocomposites had the functional groups alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, carboxylic acids, and halogen derivatives. Batch adsorption studies revealed that the maximum degradation achieved at optimum nano-composite concentration of 10 μg/mL, pH value of 5, PAHs concentration of 2 μg/mL and effective irradiation source being UV radiations in the case of both benzene and anthracene pollutants. The degradation of benzene and anthracene followed Freundlich & Langmuir isotherm with the highest R2 value of 0.9894 & 0.9885, respectively. Adsorption kinetic studies under optimum conditions revealed that the adsorption of both benzene and anthracene followed Pseudo-second order kinetics. Antimicrobial studies revealed that the synthesized nano-composite exhibited potential antimicrobial activity against Gram positive bacterium (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus), Gram negative bacterium (Klebsiella pneumonia, Escherichia coli) and fungal strain (Aspergillus niger) respectively. Thus, the synthesized rGO-Ag-Cu-Ni nano-composite acts as an effective antimicrobial agent as well as a PAHs degrading agent, helping to overcome antibiotics resistance and to mitigate the overgrowing PAHs pollution in the environment.

Synthesis of copper-reduced graphene oxide nanomaterials using glucose and study of its antibacterial and anticancer activities

In this work, glucose-capped copper nanoparticles decorated reduced graphene oxide nanomaterial are synthesized at 100 °C and 200 °C via chemical reduction method and studied for their antibacterial and anticancer activities. Synthesized nanomaterials were characterized using x-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared, transmission electron microscope, and RAMAN. It is observed in transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction studies that copper nanoparticles deposited onto reduced graphene oxide are smaller than nanoparticles generated in the absence of reduced graphene oxide. Also, the size of copper nanoparticles synthesized at 200 °C is smaller than at 100 °C. Results suggest that Cu/Glu/rGO synthesized at both temperatures showed significant antibacterial activity againstEscherichia coliandBacillus anthracis,similarly, showed significant cell death in cancer cell lines [Cal33 and HCT-116 p53 (+/+)]. Interestingly, the nanomaterials were seen to be more effective against the cancer cell lines harboring aggregating mutant p53. Tumors with aggregating mutants of p53 are difficult to treat hence, Cu/Glu/rGO can be promising therapeutic agents against these difficult cancers. However, the antibacterial and anticancer activity of Cu/Glu/rGO synthesized at 100 °C where Cu2O form is obtained was found to be more effective compared to Cu/Glu/rGO synthesized at 200 °C where Cu form is obtained. Though fine-tuning of the material may be required for its commercial applications.

Reduced graphene oxide: Biofabrication and environmental applications

Green synthesis of high-quality reduced graphene oxide (rGO) from agro-industrial waste resources remains attractive owing to its outstanding environmental benefits. The remarkable properties of rGO include excellent morphology, uniform particle size, good optical properties, high conductivity, nontoxicity, and extraordinary chemical stability. Traditional methods for the synthesis of rGO nanomaterials involve several chemical reactions including oxidation, carbonization, toxic solvent, and pyrolysis which produce harmful byproducts. Green preparation of rGO is an emerging area of research in graphene technology which is cost-effective and sustainable in the procedure. Owing to the uniform particle rGO particle size, these smart nanomaterials have wide applicability, including in metal ions and pollutant sensing and adsorption, photocatalysis, optoelectrical devices, medical diagnosis, and drug delivery. Here we review the physicochemical properties of rGO, the biowaste sources and green methods of rGO synthesis, and the diverse applications of rGO, including in water purification and the biomedical fields. With this review, covering more than 200 research articles published on rGO in the last eight years ending in 2022, we aim to provide a quick guide for researchers seeking up-to-date information on the properties, production, and applicability of rGO, with special attention to rGO applications in water purification and the biomedical fields.

Designed Growth of AgNP Arrays for Anti-counterfeiting Based on Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Signals

Based on etched PS sphere arrays, the different growths of Ag nanoparticles with tunable LSPR are designed when SiO2-25 nm/Ag-30 nm/SiO2-100 nm sandwich nanocavity structures are annealed at 500 °C, including the hexagonal silver nanoparticle rings, circular silver nanoparticle rings, and aggregated silver nanoparticles. The uniformity of particle size and regularity of position generate enhanced electromagnetic field and good surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy signals as confirmed by UV-vis observation and finite difference time domain method simulation. The developed nanostructures are effectively used as stable, nonreproducible, and markable anti-counterfeiting signs.

Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanosheets Decorated with Copper and Silver Nanoparticles for Achieving Superior Strength and Ductility in Titanium Composites

Graphene and its derivates are extensively applied to enhance the mechanical properties of metal matrix nanocomposites. However, their high reactivity with a metal matrix such as titanium and thus the limited strengthening effects are major problems for achieving high-performance graphene-based nanocomposites. Herein, reduced graphene oxide nanosheets decorated with copper or silver (i.e., Cu@rGO and Ag@rGO) nanopowders are introduced into Ti matrix composites using multiple processes of one-step chemical coreduction, hydrothermal synthesis, low-energy ball milling, spark plasma sintering, and hot rolling. The Cu@rGO/Ti and Ag@rGO/Ti nanocomposites exhibit significantly enhanced strength with superior elongation to fracture (846 MPa-11.6 and 900 MPa-8.4%, respectively, basically reaching the level of the commercial Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy), which are much higher than those of the fabricated Ti (670 MPa-7.0%) and rGO/Ti composites (726 MPa-11.3%). Furthermore, fracture toughness values of the M@rGO/Ti composites are all significantly improved, that is, the highest K_IC value is 34.4 MPa·m^1/2 for 0.5Cu@rGO/Ti composites, which is 20.28 and 51.5% higher than those of monolithic Ti and 0.5rGO/Ti composites, respectively. The outstanding mechanical properties of Ag@rGO/Ti and Cu@rGO/Ti composites are attributed to the effective load transfer of in situ formed TiC nanoparticles and the formation of interfacial intermetallic compounds between the rGO nanosheets and Ti matrix. This study provides new insights and approach for the fabrication of metal-modified graphene/Ti composites with a high performance.

Rapid synthesis and characterization of silver-loaded graphene oxide nanomaterials and their antibacterial applications

With the promising potential application of Ag/graphene-based nanomaterials in medicine and engineering materials, the large-scale production has attracted great interest of researchers on the basis of green synthesis. In this study, water-soluble silver/graphene oxide (Ag/GO) nanomaterials were synthesized under ultrasound-assisted conditions. The structural characteristics of Ag/GO were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersion spectroscopy, respectively. The results showed the silver particles (AgNPs) obtained by reduction were attached to the surface of GO, and there was a strong interaction between AgNPs and GO. The antibacterial activity was primarily evaluated by the plate method and hole punching method. Antibacterial tests indicated that Ag/GO could inhibit the growth of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, special for the Staphylococcus aureus.

Ultrasonic-assisted synthesis of two dimensional coral-like Pd nanosheets supported on reduced graphene oxide for enhanced electrocatalytic performance

Two dimensional (2D) Pd nanosheets supported on reduced graphene oxide (Pd/rGO) were prepared through a sonochemical routine induced by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). Coral-like porous Pd nanosheets (Pd/rGO-u) were obtained under the sonication condition (25 kHz, 600 W, ultrasonic transducer), while square Pd nanosheets (Pd/rGO-c) were produced via traditional chemical reduction. The size of Pd nanosheets of Pd/rGO-u and Pd/rGO-c are 69.7 nm and 59.7 nm, and the thickness are 4.6 nm and 4.4 nm, respectively. The carrier GO was proved to be partially reduced to rGO with good electrical conductivity and oxygen-containing groups facilitated a good dispersion of Pd nanosheets. The interaction between GO and CTAB made the alkyl chain assembles to a 2D lamella micelles which limit the growth of Pd atoms resulting in the formation of 2D nanosheets. A high ultrasonic power promotes the reduction and the formation of porous structure. Additionally, Pd/rGO-u exhibited a favorable electrocatalytic performance toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline condition, which provided a potential synthetic strategy assisted by sonication for high-performance 2D materials.
