Synthesis of graphene oxide and graphene quantum dots from miscanthus via ultrasound-assisted mechano-chemical cracking method

Deashing Strategy on Biomass Carbon for Achieving High-Performance Full-Supercapacitor Electrodes

The porous carbon materials, namely, MC700/800, PC700/800, and SC700/800, have been prepared using several biomasses (mushroom dreg, Chinese parasol leaves, and Siraitia grosvenorii leaves) as individual precursors at 700 and 800 °C activation temperatures. Among these carbon-negative electrodes, SC700 exhibits an impressive specific capacitance, nearly 2-fold that of commercial activated carbon (169.5 F g-1). When assembled with a Ni(OH)2 positive electrode in asymmetric supercapacitors, the SC700//Ni(OH)2 device can achieve a specific capacitance of 80 F g-1 and an energy density of 32.16 Wh kg-1 at 1700 W kg-1. In contrast, the MC700 electrode can display inferior performance potentially attributed to the high ash content in the biomass. To further optimize the activated process of the MC700 product, three deashing carbon negative electrodes (denoted as MC(H2O), MC(HF), and MC(Mix)) were prepared by deashing treatment using H2O, HF, and mixed acid, and then a modified composite positive electrode (MC700@MnO2(MCM)) has been prepared by doping with MnO2. Electrochemical testing demonstrates that the deashing strategy achieves a significant capacitance enhancement compared to the primary carbon material while maintaining excellent cyclic stability. The asymmetric supercapacitors, assembled from these decorated electrode materials, exhibited a maximum energy density of 21.08 Wh kg-1 and a power density of 1150 W kg-1 under a high-voltage window of 2.2 V. Additionally, this type of full device can power 28 LEDs for approximately 5 min.

The development of Giant reed biochar for adsorption of Basic Blue 41 and Eriochrome Black T. azo dyes from wastewater

The textile industry is discharging high concentrations of anionic and cationic azo dyes into the nearby environment, which can cause adverse effects on public health, and the aquatic environment. Therefore, this study aimed to develop giant reed biochar and apply for the removal of Basic blue 41 (BB41) and Eriochrome black T (EBT) azo dyes from water. Characterization techniques such as BET surface area analyzer, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA) were applied for biochar description. The biochar exhibits a high fixed carbon content (80.4%), a low ash content (3.8%), a large surface area (429.0 m2/g), and good thermal stability. High removal efficiencies of BB41 98.6% and EBT 82.5% were recorded at the specific experimental condition. The experimental data were fitted with the Langmuir isotherm model at R2 0.99 for both dyes whereas the adsorption kinetics revealed the pseudo-second-order kinetics at R2 ∼ 1 and 0.99 for BB41 and EBT, respectively. Furthermore, four regenerations of biochar with adsorption performances of BB41 and EBT dyes were found to be 94.7% and 79.1%, respectively. Finally, this adsorbent can be considered an economically viable material for the removal of synthetic dyes from wastewater systems. In conclusion, the study findings showed that the adsorbent material is promising to apply for water and wastewater treatment but still, the study of adsorption interaction and modifications of the surface functionalities are essential to accommodate multipollutant removal from real water systems.

Coconut shell-based biochars produced by an innovative thermochemical process for obtaining improved lignocellulose-based adsorbents

The urgent need for a simple and cost-effective thermochemical process to produce biochar has prompted this study. The aim was to develop a straightforward thermochemical process under O2-limited conditions for the production of coconut-based biochar (CBB) and to assess its ability to remove methylene blue (MB) through adsorption, comparing it with CBB produced by slow pyrolysis. CBBs were obtained under different atmospheric conditions (O2-limited, muffle furnace biochar (MFB); and inert, pyrolytic reactor biochar (PRB)), at 350, 500, and 700 °C, and for 30 and 90'. MFB and PRB were characterized using FTIR, RAMAN, SEM, EDS, and XRD analyses. Adsorption tests were conducted using 1.0 g L-1 of MFB and PRB, 10 mg L-1 of MB at 25 °C for 48 h. Characterization revealed that atmospheric conditions significantly influenced the yield and structural features of the materials. PRB exhibited higher yields and larger cavities than MFB, but quite similar spectral features. Adsorption tests indicated that MFB and PRB had qt values of 33.1 and 9.2 mg g-1, respectively, which were obtained at 700 °C and 90', and 700 °C and 30', respectively. This alternative method produced an innovative and promising lignocellulose-based material with great potential to be used as a biosorbent.

Prospects of graphene quantum dots preparation using lignocellulosic wastes for application in photofermentative hydrogen production

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are a novel carbon nanomaterial from the graphene family due to their unique physicochemical properties and diverse range of applications. However, in terms of the sustainable utility of GQDs, their synthesis methods are the main roadblock because of their high production costs and the release of toxic byproducts during the production processes. Thus, the search for sustainable and economical fabrication methods for preparing GQDs is one of the most essential areas of research for their practical applications. In this context, lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) wastes are a prime choice for the fabrication of GQDs due to their high carbon and cellulose content, which are favorable for being employed as precursors and reducing agents Additionally, LCBs are a prime source of potential bioenergy production, which is currently a key research hotspot to combat environmental pollution, global warming, and energy crises. Therefore, the present review provides feasibility for sustainable and environmentally friendly fabrication of GQDs using LCB wastes for their possible utility in cellulosic biofuel production technology improvement. Furthermore, the prospective of using these GQDs as catalysts in bioenergy production for the development of low-cost biomass-based biofuel production technology has been discussed along with the existing limitations and their sustainable recommendation.

Novel Approach to Photocatalytic Removal of Linezolid by Advanced Nano-Biochar/Bismuth Oxychloride Hybrid

Herein, we introduce an innovative nanohybrid material for advanced wastewater treatment, composed of Corchorus olitorius-derived biochar and bismuth oxychloride (Biochar/Bi12O17Cl2), demonstrated in a solar photoreactor. This work focuses on the efficient degradation of linezolid (LIN), a persistent pharmaceutical pollutant, utilizing the unique (photo)catalytic capabilities of the nanohybrid. Compared with its individual components, the biochar/Bi12O17Cl2 hybrid exhibits a remarkable degradation efficiency of 82.6% for LIN, alongside significant chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC) mineralization rates of 81.3 and 75.8%, respectively. These results were achieved within 3 h under solar irradiation, using an optimal composite dose of 125 mg/L at pH 4.3 ± 0.45, with an initial COD and LIN concentrations of 1605 and 160.8 mg/L and TOC of 594.3 mg/L. The nanohybrid's stability across five cycles of use demonstrates its potential for repeated applications, with degradation efficiencies of 82.6 and 77.9% in the first and fifth cycles, respectively. This indicates the biochar/Bi12O17Cl2 composite's suitability as a sustainable and cost-effective solution for the remediation of heavily contaminated waters. Further, the degradation pathway proposed the degradation of all of the generated intermediates to a single-ring compound. Contributing to the development of next-generation materials for environmental remediation, this research underscores the critical role of nanotechnology in enhancing water quality and ecosystem sustainability and addressing the global imperative for clean water access and environmental preservation.

Pinecone biochar for the Adsorption of chromium (VI) from wastewater: Kinetics, thermodynamics, and adsorbent regeneration

High concentration of chromium in aquatic environments is the trigger for researchers to remediate it from wastewater environments. However, conventional water treatment methods have not been satisfactory in removing chromium from water and wastewater over the last decade. Similarly, many adsorption studies have been focused on one aspect of the treatment, but this study dealt with all aspects of adsorption packages to come up with a concrete conclusion. Therefore, this study aimed to prepare pinecone biochar (PBC) via pyrolysis and apply it for Cr(VI) removal from wastewater. The PBC was characterized using FTIR, SEM-EDX, BET surface area, pHpzc, Raman analyses, TGA, and XRD techniques. Chromium adsorption was studied under the influence of PBC dose, solution pH, initial Cr(VI) concentration, and contact time. The characteristics of PBC are illustrated by FTIR spectroscopic functional groups, XRD non-crystallite structure, SEM rough surface morphology, and high BET surface area125 m2/g, pore volume, 0.07 cm3/g, and pore size 1.4 nm. On the other hand, the maximum Cr (VI) adsorption of 69% was found at the experimental condition of pH 2, adsorbent dosage 0.25 mg/50 mL, initial Cr concentration 100 mg/L, and contact time of 120 min. Similarly, the experimental data were well-fitted with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm at R2 0.96 and the pseudo-second-order kinetics model at R2 0.99. This implies the adsorption process is mainly attributed to monolayer orientation between the adsorbent and adsorbate. In the thermodynamics study of adsorption, ΔG was found to be negative implying the adsorption process was feasible and spontaneous whereas the positive values of ΔH and ΔS indicated the adsorption process was endothermic and increasing the degree of randomness, respectively. Finally, adsorbent regeneration and reusability were successful up to three cycles. In conclusion, biochar surface modification and reusability improvements are urgently required before being applied at the pilot scale.

Recent Progress of Fluorescent Carbon Dots and Graphene Quantum Dots for Biosensors: Synthesis of Solution Methods and their Medical Applications

In the fields of health and biology, fluorescent nanomaterials have emerged as highly potential and very useful candidates for use in biosensor applications. These typical highly powerful nanomaterials are carbon dots (CDs) and graphene quantum dots (GQDs) among many other metallic nanomaterials. In the context of medical biosensors, this review article investigates the techniques of synthesis, and many uses of these nanomaterials, the obstacles that they face, and the potential for their future. We cover the significance of fluorescent nanomaterials, their use in the medical field, as well as the several techniques of synthesis for CDs and GQDs, including ultrasonication, hydrothermal, electrochemical method, surface modification, and solvothermal. In addition, we also discuss their biomedical applications, which include biomolecule detection, disease diagnosis and examine the obstacles and prospective possibilities for development of ultra-bright, ultra-sensitive, and selective biosensors for use in in-vivo research.Fluorescent carbon dots and graphene quantum dots is synthesized by using several types of raw material and methods. Fabrication of a Label-Free Immunosensor Using Surface-Engineered AuPt@GQD Core-Shell Nanocomposite for the Selective Detection of Trace Levels of Escherichia coli from Contaminated Food Samples

Fabrication of label-free immunosensors is highly necessitated due to their simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and robustness. Herein, we report the facile development of a label-free, direct, rapid, capacitive immunosensor for ultrasensitive and rapid recognition of trace levels of Escherichia coli from contaminated food samples. This was achieved using gold platinum core-shell nanoparticles loaded with graphene quantum dots (AuPt@GQDs) that were utilized as electrode modifiers. The incorporation of GQDs to the surface of AuPt core-shell nanoparticles was performed using the "greener" probe-sonication method. The electrochemical properties of AuPt@GQDs, determined using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, suggested the optimized loading concentration of AuPt to be 0.05% in the core-shell nanocomposite to exhibit the highest current response. Furthermore, immobilization of anti-E. coli monoclonal antibodies (anti-E. coli mAb) onto the surface of modified electrodes was performed using amine coupling. The high specific binding of E. coli cells onto the surface of the immuno-electrode was measured as a direct function of change in transient capacitance with time that was measured at low and high frequencies. The resultant immunosensor (bovine serum albumin/anti-E. coli mAb/AuPt0.05@GQDs/FTO) demonstrated a detection range (5 to 4.5 × 103 cells/mL), with the detection limit as low as 1.5 × 102 cells/mL, and an excellent sensitivity ∼171,281.40 μF-1 mL cells-1 cm-2 without the use of any labels (R2-0.99). These findings were further verified using real sample analysis wherein the immuno-electrode demonstrated outstanding sensitivity, the highest noticed so far. More interestingly, the high resuability ∼48 weeks (RSD-5.92%) and excellent reproducibility in detection results (RSD ∼ 9.5%) testify its potential use in a clinical setting. The results reveal the usefulness of the surface-engineered AuPt@GQDs core-shell nanocomposite as an electrode modifier that can be used for the development of newer on-site monitoring devices to estimate trace levels of pathogens present as contaminants in food samples.

Impact of Tamm plasmon structures on fluorescence and optical nonlinearity of graphene quantum dots

Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs) are crucial in biomedicine for sensitive biosensing and high-resolution bioimaging and in photonics for their nonlinear optical properties. Integrating GQDs with photonic structures enhances optical properties by optimizing light-matter interactions and enabling precise control over their emission wavelengths. In this work, we explore a facile synthesis method for GQDs by pulsed laser irradiation in chlorobenzene and highlight the transformative potential of Tamm Plasmon Cavity (TPC) structures for tuning and amplifying the photoluminescence and nonlinear optical properties of GQDs. The characterization of GQDs revealed their exceptional properties, including efficient optical limiting and stable photoluminescence. The study demonstrated that the TPC structure significantly amplifies nonlinear optical effects due to the high light-matter interaction, indicating the potential for advanced optical systems, including optical limiters and nonlinear optical devices. Furthermore, introducing GQDs into the TPC structure leads to a significant enhancement and tuning of fluorescence emission. The Purcell effect, in combination with the confined electromagnetic fields within the TPC, increases the spontaneous emission rate of GQDs and subsequently enhances the fluorescence intensity. This enhanced and tunable fluorescence has exciting implications for high-sensitivity applications such as biosensing and single-molecule detection.

Biomass Derived Biofluorescent Carbon Dots for Energy Applications: Current Progress and Prospects

Biomass resources are often disposed of inefficiently and it causes environmental degradation. These wastes can be turned into bio-products using effective conversion techniques. The synthesis of high-value bio-products from biomass adheres to the principles of a sustainable circular economy in a variety of industries, including agriculture. Recently, fluorescent carbon dots (C-dots) derived from biowastes have emerged as a breakthrough in the field, showcasing outstanding fluorescence properties and biocompatibility. The C-dots exhibit unique quantum confinement properties due to their small size, contributing to their exceptional fluorescence. The significance of their fluorescent properties lies in their versatile applications, particularly in bio-imaging and energy devices. Their rapid and straight-forward production using green/chemical precursors has further accelerated their adoption in diverse applications. The use of green precursors for C-dot not only addresses the biomass disposal issue through a scientific approach, but also establishes a path for a circular economy. This approach not only minimizes biowaste, which also harnesses the potential of fluorescent C-dots to contribute to sustainable practices in agriculture. This review explores recent developments and challenges in synthesizing high-quality C-dots from agro-residues, shedding light on their crucial role in advancing technologies for a cleaner and more sustainable future.

Tailor-designed carbon-based novel fluorescent architecture for nanomolar detection of radioactive elements U(VI) and Th(IV) in pH ± 5.0

Highly stable nitrogen-doped Graphene Quantum Dots (N-GQD) functionalized with Pamoic Acid (PA@N-GQD) are utilized for nanomolar detection of radioactive elements, Uranium (VI) and Thorium (IV), in pH ± 5.0. The absorption, fluorescence, crystalline nature, elemental composition, functional groups, and morphological state of as-prepared PA@N-GQD are evaluated by UV-visible absorption, photoluminescence, XRD, XPS, FTIR, HRTEM, FESEM, and AFM characterizations. The aqueous solution of PA@N-GQD is characterized by its spherical morphology, averaging 6.5 nm in size. PA@N-GQD exhibits a gradual decrease in fluorescence intensity at 438 nm (λex 344 nm) upon the addition of Uranium (VI) and Thorium (IV) ions. The selectivity, sensitivity, competitivity, pH, time effect, and reversibility studies of PA@N-GQDs have been carried out using the photoluminescence technique. The attained fluorescence Limit of Detection (LoD) of PA@N-GQD for Uranium (VI) and Thorium (IV) ions are 2.009 × 10-9 and 1.351 × 10-9 M, respectively. From the fluorescence titration studies of U(VI) and Th(IV), the binding constant, Stern-Volmer constant, Modified Stern-Volmer constant, association constant, and dissociation constants have been calculated separately. These aforementioned results indicate that the PA@N-GQD has a higher binding affinity towards Th(IV) than U(VI) in aqueous medium. This current research represents the development of advanced materials for environmental and analytical applications, specifically focusing on the precise detection and quantification of radioactive elements.

KHCO3-activated high surface area biochar derived from brown algae: A case study for efficient adsorption of Cr(VI) in aqueous solution

The current study aimed to assess the effectiveness of biochar formed from algae in the removal of Cr(VI) through the process of impregnating brown algae Sargassum hemiphyllum with KHCO3. The synthesis of KHCO3-activated biochar (KBAB-3), demonstrating remarkable adsorption capabilities for Cr(VI), was accomplished utilizing a mixture of brown algae and KHCO3 in a mass ratio of 1:3, followed by calcination at a temperature of 700 °C. Based on the empirical evidence, it can be observed that KBAB-3 shown a significant ability to adsorb Cr(VI) within a range of 60-160 mg g-1 across different environmental conditions. In addition, the KBAB-3 material demonstrated the advantageous characteristic of easy separation, allowing for the continued maintenance of a high efficiency in removing Cr(VI) even after undergoing numerous cycles of reuse. In conclusion, the application of KBAB-3, a novel adsorbent, exhibits considerable prospects for effective removal of Cr(VI) from diverse water sources in the near future.

Carbon Nanomaterial Fluorescent Probes and Their Biological Applications

Fluorescent carbon nanomaterials have broadly useful chemical and photophysical attributes that are conducive to applications in biology. In this review, we focus on materials whose photophysics allow for the use of these materials in biomedical and environmental applications, with emphasis on imaging, biosensing, and cargo delivery. The review focuses primarily on graphitic carbon nanomaterials including graphene and its derivatives, carbon nanotubes, as well as carbon dots and carbon nanohoops. Recent advances in and future prospects of these fields are discussed at depth, and where appropriate, references to reviews pertaining to older literature are provided.

Ultrasonic liquid exfoliation for producing graphene materials from rice stem: Investigating cellular components and functionalities

This study investigates a prospective and straightforward method for producing graphene material derived from biomass, examining the influence of plant cell composition and functions. The experimental outcomes highlight ultrasound's crucial role in synthesizing graphene material sourced from biomass. Ultrasound, a pivotal element in the experiment, significantly affects graphene production from biomass by working synergistically with the liquid components in the solvent system. Notably, the ethanol content reduces the solution's surface tension, facilitating the effective dispersion of biochar and graphene oxide sheets throughout the process. Simultaneously, the water content maintains the solution's polarity, enhancing the cavitation effect induced by ultrasound. Biomass-derived graphene is exfoliated utilizing an ultrasonic bath system (134.4 W, 40 kHz, 0.5 W/cm2) from biochar. The as-synthesized graphene oxide exhibits a structure comprising a few layers while remaining intact, featuring abundant functional groups. Interestingly, the resulting product displays nanopores with an approximate diameter of 100 nm. These nanopores are attributed to preserving specific cell structures, particularly those with specialized cell wall structures or secondary metabolite deposits from biomass resources. The study's findings shed light on the impact of cellular structure on synthesizing graphene material sourced from biomass, emphasizing the potential application of ultrasound as a promising approach in graphene production.

Graphene Quantum Dots: Green Synthesis, Characterization, and Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Potential

Antibiotic resistance is becoming more common, emphasising the demand for novel antibacterial treatments. The current investigation describes the green synthesis of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) using M. indica leaves and characterization via Fourier-transform infrared spectra (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer. The results showed that GQDs are spherical in shape. In vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial studies indicate that the biological efficacy of synthesized GQDs was higher than the ethanolic leaf extract. GQDs exhibited the highest scavenging efficacy with lowest IC50 (half-maximal inhibitory concentration) value. However, antimicrobial study showed more inhibitory activity of GQDs against all screened microorganisms, i.e., Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and fungi, i.e., Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus flavus. Graphene quantum dots facilitate reactive oxygen species (ROS) which ultimately lead to antioxidant and antibacterial activity. This approach would provide an efficient alternate method for tackling microorganisms.

Improvement of thermal-stability of chondroitinase ABCI immobilized on graphene oxide for the repair of spinal cord injury

Spinal cord injury healing has been shown to be aided by chondroitinase ABC I (cABCI) treatment. The transport of cABCI to target tissues is complicated by the enzyme's thermal instability; however, cABCI may be immobilized on nanosheets to boost stability and improve delivery efficiency. This investigation's goal was to assess the immobilization of cABC I on graphene oxide (GO). for this purpose, GO was produced from graphene using a modified version of Hummer's process. the immobilization of cABC I on GO was examined using SEM, XRD, and FTIR. The enzymatic activity of cABC I was evaluated in relation to substrate concentration. The enzyme was then surface-adsorption immobilized on GO, and its thermal stability was examined. As compared to the free enzyme, the results showed that the immobilized enzyme had a greater Km and a lower Vmax value. The stability of the enzyme was greatly improved by immobilization at 20, 4, 25, and 37 °C. For example, at 37 °C, the free enzyme retained 5% of its activity after 100 min, while the immobilized one retained 30% of its initial activity. The results showed, As a suitable surface for immobilizing cABC I, GO nano sheets boost the enzyme's stability, improving its capability to support axonal regeneration after CNC damage and guard against fast degradation.

Crystallization Retardation and Synergistic Trap Passivation in Perovskite Solar Cells Incorporated with Magnesium-Decorated Graphene Quantum Dots

One of the encouraging strategies for enhancing the efficiency of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is to reduce defects, trap states of pinholes, and charge recombination rate in the light absorber layer of perovskite, which can be addressed by increasing the perovskite grain size. The utilization of Mg-decorated graphene quantum dots (MGQD) or graphene quantum dots (GQDs) into a perovskite precursor solution for further crystal modification is introduced in this study. Studies on the crystalline structure and morphology of MGQD generated from GQDs demonstrate that MGQD has a greater crystal size than GQD. Therefore, higher light absorption in the whole UV-vis spectrum and a larger grain size for the perovskite/MGQD layer compared to the perovskite/GQD sample are achieved. Moreover, more photoluminescence peak quenching of perovskite/MGQD and extended carrier recombination lifetime (from 3 to 40 ns) verify the surface and grain boundary trap passivation compared to pristine perovskite. Consequently, PSCs in an n-i-p configuration containing perovskite/MGQD show a higher performance of 10.2% in comparison to the pristine perovskite at 7.2%, attributed to the enhanced JSC from 13.2 to 19.1 mA cm-2. Thus, incorporating MGQDs into the perovskite layer is a hopeful approach for obtaining a superior perovskite film with impressive charge extraction and decreased nonradiative charge recombination.

New insights into the production, characterization and potential uses of vineyard pruning waste biochars

Vineyard pruning waste (VP) can be converted into a useful char using pyrolysis as part of a valorization strategy. This study analyzed the effect of temperature (300 and 600 °C) and residence time (1 and 3 h) on an ample number of properties of VP derived biochars, including potential negative environmental impacts. The results showed a clear influence of temperature on biochar's properties and a weaker effect of residence time. Increasing temperature raised soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), ash and C contents, aromaticity, specific surface area, solid density, mesoporosity and partial graphitization. However, higher pyrolysis temperature reduced O/C and N/C ratios, total N, P and Mg, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Particularly, the concentration of water extractable organic carbon (WEOC) decreased dramatically with pyrolysis temperature. Moreover, the WEOC fraction of biochars pyrolyzed at 300 °C exhibited a larger aromaticity than those pyrolyzed at 600 °C. Prolonged residence time increased ash content and fixed carbon (FC) and decreased H/C and O/C ratios; however, most frequently this parameter affected biochar properties following opposite trends for the two pyrolysis temperatures. Hydrophysical properties were adequate to consider VP derived biochars as growing media component. PAH concentration was much lower than thresholds following international standards. The germination index increased with temperature and decreased with residence time, so that phytotoxicity was observed in VP and in biochars pyrolyzed for 3 h. Our research demonstrates that, besides temperature, residence time can be useful to modulate the properties of biochars and that prolonged time effect is temperature-dependent.

The efficient removal of ibuprofen, caffeine, and bisphenol A using engineered egusi seed shells biochar: adsorption kinetics, equilibrium, thermodynamics, and mechanism

Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), also known as micropollutants, have been recognized in recent years as substantial water pollutants because of the potential threats they pose to the environment and human health. This study was aimed at preparing biochar (BC) based on egusi seed shells (ESS) with well-developed porosity and excellent adsorption capacity towards CECs including ibuprofen (IBP), caffeine (CAF), and bisphenol A (BPA). BC samples were prepared by pyrolysis at different temperatures (400 to 800 °C) and were characterized using nitrogen sorption, FTIR, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), SEM/EDS, elemental analysis, and thermal analysis. The nitrogen sorption and SEM results showed that the textural properties were more prominent as the pyrolysis temperature increased. The BC sample obtained at 800 °C which exhibited the largest specific surface area (688 m2/g) and the highest pore volume (0.320 cm3/g) was selected for the adsorption study of CECs. The kinetic study shows that the adsorption equilibrium of CAF and BPA was faster than that of IBP. The pseudo-first- and pseudo-second-order kinetic models best fitted the adsorption data. The Langmuir maximum monolayer adsorption capacities of biochar were found to be ~ 180, 121, and 73 mg/g respectively for IBP, CAF, and BPA. The thermodynamic study shows that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic for the three CECs. The results of the adsorption and the analysis of BC after adsorption showed that hydrogen bonding, van der Waals, π-π, n-π interactions, and pore filling were involved in the adsorption mechanism. The prepared biochar BC from ESS displayed a large surface area and good morphology and significantly promotes adsorption of CECs and good efficiency on synthetic effluent. Finally, it offers a low-cost and cleaner production method.

Recent Advances in Miscanthus Macromolecule Conversion: A Brief Overview

Miscanthus is a valuable renewable feedstock and has a significant potential for the manufacture of diverse biotechnology products based on macromolecules such as cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin. Herein, we overviewed the state-of-the art of research on the conversion of miscanthus polymers into biotechnology products comprising low-molecular compounds and macromolecules: bioethanol, biogas, bacterial cellulose, enzymes (cellulases, laccases), lactic acid, lipids, fumaric acid and polyhydroxyalkanoates. The present review aims to assess the potential of converting miscanthus polymers in order to develop sustainable technologies.

Chicken Cartilage-Derived Carbon for Efficient Xylene Removal

Chicken cartilage was used for the first time as a raw material for the microwave-assisted synthesis of biochar and activated carbon. Various microwave absorbers, i.e., commercial active carbon, scrap tyres, silicon carbide, and chicken bone-derived biochar, as well as various microwave powers, were tested for their effect on the rate of pyrolysis and the type of products formed. Biochars synthesised under 400 W in the presence of scrap tyres and chicken bone-derived biochar were activated with KOH and K₂CO₃ with detergent to produce activated carbon with a highly developed porous structure that would be able to effectively adsorb xylene vapours. All carbons were thoroughly characterised (infrared spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, nitrogen adsorption/desorption, Raman spectroscopy, proximate and ultimate analysis) and tested as xylene sorbents in dynamic systems. It was found that the activation causes an increase of up to 1042 m²·g^-1 in the specific surface area, which ensures the sorption capacity of xylene about 300 mg·g^-1. Studies of the composition of biogas emitted during pyrolysis revealed that particularly valuable gaseous products are formed when pyrolysis is carried out in the presence of silicon carbide as a microwave absorber.

Facile Synthesis of Functionalized Porous Carbon by Direct Pyrolysis of Anacardium occidentale Nut-Skin Waste and Its Utilization towards Supercapacitors

Preparing electrode materials plays an essential role in the fabrication of high-performance supercapacitors. In general, heteroatom doping in carbon-based electrode materials enhances the electrochemical properties. Herein, nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur co-doped porous carbon (PC) materials were prepared by direct pyrolysis of Anacardium occidentale (AO) nut-skin waste for high-performance supercapacitor applications. The as-prepared AO-PC material possessed interconnected micropore/mesopore structures and exhibited a high specific surface area of 615 m² g^-1. The Raman spectrum revealed a moderate degree of graphitization of AO-PC materials. These superior properties of the as-prepared AO-PC material help to deliver high specific capacitance. After fabricating the working electrode, the electrochemical performances including cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements were conducted in 1 M H₂SO₄ aqueous solution using a three-electrode configuration for supercapacitor applications. The AO-PC material delivered a high specific capacitance of 193 F g^-1 at a current density of 0.5 A g^-1. The AO-PC material demonstrated <97% capacitance retention even after 10,000 cycles of charge-discharge at the current density of 5 A g^-1. All the above outcomes confirmed that the as-prepared AO-PC from AO nut-skin waste via simple pyrolysis is an ideal electrode material for fabricating high-performance supercapacitors. Moreover, this work provides a cost-effective and environmentally friendly strategy for adding value to biomass waste by a simple pyrolysis route.

Effect of ultrasound power on HCl leaching kinetics of impurity removal of aphanitic graphite

This study aimed to investigate the effect of ultrasonic power and temperature on the impurity removal rate during conventional and ultrasonic-assisted leaching of aphanitic graphite. The results showed that the ash removal rate increased gradually (∼50 %) with the increase in ultrasonic power and temperature but deteriorated at high power and temperature. The unreacted shrinkage core model was found to fit the experimental results better than other models. The Arrhenius equation was used to calculate the finger front factor and activation energy under different ultrasonic power conditions. The ultrasonic leaching process was significantly influenced by temperature, and the enhancement of the leaching reaction rate constant by ultrasound was mainly reflected in the increase of the pre-exponential factor A. Ultrasound treatment improved the efficiency of impurity mineral removal by destroying the inert layer formed on the graphite surface, promoting particle fragmentation, and generating oxidation radicals. The poor reactivity of hydrochloric acid with quartz and some silicate minerals is a bottleneck limiting the further improvement of impurity removal efficiency in ultrasound-assisted aphanitic graphite. Finally, the study suggests that introducing fluoride salts may be a promising method for deep impurity removal in the ultrasound-assisted hydrochloric acid leaching process of aphanitic graphite.

Carbon dots: Types, preparation, and their boosted antibacterial activity by photoactivation. Current status and future perspectives

Carbon dots (CDs) correspond to carbon-based materials (CBM) with sizes usually below 10 nm. These nanomaterials exhibit attractive properties such us low toxicity, good stability, and high conductivity, which have promoted their thorough study over the past two decades. The current review describes four types of CDs: carbon quantum dots (CQDs), graphene quantum dots (GQDs), carbon nanodots (CNDs), and carbonized polymers dots (CPDs), together with the state of the art of the main routes for their preparation, either by "top-down" or "bottom-up" approaches. Moreover, among the various usages of CDs within biomedicine, we have focused on their application as a novel class of broad-spectrum antibacterial agents, concretely, owing their photoactivation capability that triggers an enhanced antibacterial property. Our work presents the recent advances in this field addressing CDs, their composites and hybrids, applied as photosensitizers (PS), and photothermal agents (PA) within antibacterial strategies such as photodynamic therapy (PDT), photothermal therapy (PTT), and synchronic PDT/PTT. Furthermore, we discuss the prospects for the possible future development of large-scale preparation of CDs, and the potential for these nanomaterials to be employed in applications to combat other pathogens harmful to human health. Treatment of hazardous landfill leachate containing 1,4 dioxane by biochar-based photocatalysts in a solar photo-oxidation reactor

This study investigates a combined photocatalytic and adsorption system to maximize the removal of 1,4 dioxane from hazardous landfill leachate (HLL). The production of transformation products was also investigated to obtain a comprehensive evaluation of the treatment system. Copper/iron doped zinc oxide (Cu-Fe-ZnO) was introduced to biochar to form a hybrid materials and used to treat HLL contaminated with 1,4 dioxane of 355.0 ± 11.7 mg/L. The Cu-Fe-ZnO/biochar removed 93.1 ± 8.7% of 1,4 dioxane at a dose of 0.6 g/L within 90 min, as compared with only 42.7 ± 3.3% by 1.2 g/L of bare biochar within 210 min. The Cu-Fe-ZnO/biochar degraded 1,4 dioxane into ethylene glycol, glycolic acid, and formic acid. The 1,4 dioxane removal mechanisms were investigated using the density functional theory, demonstrating that doping of ZnO with metal atoms (Cu-Fe) narrowed the bandgap from 3.307 eV to 2.736 eV. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of ZnO was also supported by the role of biochar in increasing the reactive species and adsorbing the pollutant molecules. The high degradation efficiency of 1,4 dioxane using small catalyst doses with short reaction times would reduce the treatment cost and improve the system's applicability for treating HLL and industrial effluents.

Green and Sustainable Ultrasound-Assisted Anodic Electrochemical Preparation of Graphene Oxide Dispersions and Their Antioxidant Properties

A fast method for preparing aqueous graphene oxide (GO) dispersions by electrochemical oxidation of a graphite anode without preliminary intercalation with oxidizing agents is proposed. Ultrasonic probing was used in the modulation mode of ultrasonic waves (work/rest) for more efficient graphite oxidation-exfoliation. It is shown that the 4/2 s mode of ultrasonic modulation is the most effective due to the probe material's low corrosion while maintaining the optimum synthesis temperature not exceeding 30-35 °C and achieving the best characteristics of the resulting product. Three cases of anodic oxidation of graphite to obtain graphene oxide were considered: (1) a combined cathode-anode compartment, (2) a split cathode-anode salt-bridged compartment, and (3) separated anode compartment with a 3.5 kDa dialysis membrane. It was determined that the approach to synthesis with a divided cathode-anode compartment makes it possible to obtain GO sheets with fewer defects compared to chemical methods or methods with a combined cathode-anode compartment and makes it possible to control the oxidation degree of the material (C:O ratio) by varying the current density. The prepared samples showed good stability for more than six months. The spectral and morphological characteristics were studied. Using chemiluminometry in the luminol/Co(II)/H₂O₂ system, the antioxidant properties concerning three key reactive oxygen species (H₂O₂, superoxide anion radical, and hydroxyl radical) were demonstrated. It was also shown that the prepared GO dispersions do not induce lipid and phospholipid peroxidation.

Ternary nanocomposite-based smart sensor: Reduced graphene oxide/polydopamine/alanine nanocomposite for simultaneous electrochemical detection of Cd2+, Pb2+, Fe2+, and Cu2+ ions

Heavy metal ion (HMI) sensors are the most sought commercial devices for environmental monitoring and food analysis research due to serious health concerns associated with HMI overdosage. Herein, we developed an effective electrochemical sensor for simultaneous detection of four HMI (Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺, Fe²⁺, and Cu²⁺) using a ternary nanocomposite of reduced graphene oxide functionalized with polydopamine and alanine (ALA/pDA/rGO). Comprehensive spectroscopic and microscopic characterizations were performed to ensure the formation of the ternary nanocomposite. The developed nanocomposite on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) yields >2-fold higher current than GO/GCE electrode with excellent electrochemical stability and charge transfer rate. Using DPV, various chemical and electrochemical parameters, such as supporting electrolyte, buffer pH, metal deposition time, and potential, were optimized to achieve highly sensitive detection of targeted HMI. For Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺, Fe²⁺, and Cu²⁺ sensing devised sensor exhibited detection limits of 1.46, 2.86, 50.23, and 17.95 ppb and sensitivity of 0.0929, 0.0744, 0.0051, and 0.0394 μA/ppb, respectively, with <6% interference. The sensor worked similarly well for real water samples with HMI. This study demonstrates a novel strategy for concurrently detecting and quantifying multiple HMI in water and soil using a smart ternary nanocomposite-based electrochemical sensor, which can also detect HMI in food samples.

Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Pathways to Photoluminescent Carbon Quantum Dots (CQDs)

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs), a new family of photoluminescent 0D NPs, have recently received a lot of attention. They have enormous future potential due to their unique properties, which include low toxicity, high conductivity, and biocompatibility and accordingly can be used as a feasible replacement for conventional materials deployed in various optoelectronic, biomedical, and energy applications. The most recent trends and advancements in the synthesizing and setup of photoluminescent CQDs using environmentally friendly methods are thoroughly discussed in this review. The eco-friendly synthetic processes are emphasized, with a focus on biomass-derived precursors. Modification possibilities for creating newer physicochemical properties among different CQDs are also presented, along with a brief conceptual overview. The extensive amount of writings on them found in the literature explains their exceptional competence in a variety of fields, making these nanomaterials promising alternatives for real-world applications. Furthermore, the benefits, drawbacks, and opportunities for CQDs are discussed, with an emphasis on their future prospects in this emerging research field.

Multifunctional Graphene Oxide Nanodelivery Platform for Breast Cancer Treatment

Background

Breast cancer (BC) has the highest global prevalence among all malignancies in women and the second highest prevalence in the overall population. Paclitaxel (PTX), a tricyclic diterpenoid, is effective against BC. However, its poor solubility in water and the allergenicity of its dissolution medium limited its clinical application.

Methods

In this work, we established a multifunctional graphene oxide (GO) tumor-targeting drug delivery system using nanosized graphene oxide (nGO) modified with D-tocopherol polyethylene glycol succinate (TPGS) and arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) for PTX loading.

Results

The obtained RGD-TPGS-nGO-PTX was 310.20±19.86 nm in size; the polydispersity index (PDI) and zeta potential were 0.21±0.020 and -23.42 mV, respectively. The mean drug loading capacity of RGD-TPGS-nGO-PTX was 48.78%. RGD-TPGS-nGO-PTX showed satisfactory biocompatibility and biosafety and had no significant toxic effects on zebrafish embryos. Importantly, it exerted excellent cytotoxicity against MDA-MB-231 cells, reversed multi-drug resistance (MDR) in MCF-7/ADR cells, and showed significant anti-tumor efficacy in tumor-bearing nude mice.

Conclusion

These findings strongly suggested that the multifunctional GO tumor-targeting drug delivery system RGD-TPGS-nGO-PTX could be used in clinical settings to improve PTX delivery, reverse MDR and increase the therapeutic efficacy of BC treatment.

Calcium as an innovative and effective catalyst for the synthesis of graphene-like materials from cellulose

Pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass (hard carbon) produces poorly graphitic biochar. In this study, nano-structured biochars were produced from microcrystalline cellulose using calcium as a non-conventional catalyst. Calcium is abundant, environmental-friendly and widely accessible. Graphitization of calcium-impregnated cellulose was carried out at 1800 °C, a temperature below 2000 °C where the graphitization usually occurs. XRD, Raman spectroscopy, high-resolution TEM together with the in-house numerical tool developed enable the quantification of the graphene fringes in the biochars. The non-impregnated cellulose biochar was composed of short and poorly stacked graphene fringes. The impregnation with 2 wt.% of calcium led to the conversion of the initial structure into a well-organized and less defective graphene-like one. The graphene-like structures obtained were composed of tens of stacked graphene fringes with a crystallite size up to 20 nm and an average interlayer spacing equal to 0.345 nm, close to the reference value of standard hexagonal graphite (0.3354 nm). The increase of the calcium concentration did not significantly improve the crystallite sizes of the graphene-like materials but rather drastically improved their rate. Our results propose a mechanism and provide new insights on the synthesis of graphene-like materials from bio-feedstocks using calcium where the literature is focused on transition metals such as iron and nickel among others. The decrease of the graphitization temperature below 2000 °C should lower the production cost as well as the environmental impact of the thermal graphene-like materials synthesis using biomass. This finding should stimulate further research in the field and broaden the application perspectives.

Conversion of Carbon Dioxide into Chemical Vapor Deposited Graphene with Controllable Number of Layers via Hydrogen Plasma Pre-Treatment

In this work, we report the conversion of carbon dioxide (CO₂) gas into graphene on copper foil by using a thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method assisted by hydrogen (H₂) plasma pre-treatment. The synthesized graphene has been characterized by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The results show the controllable number of layers (two to six layers) of high-quality graphene by adjusting H₂ plasma pre-treatment powers (100-400 W). The number of layers is reduced with increasing H₂ plasma pre-treatment powers due to the direct modification of metal catalyst surfaces. Bilayer graphene can be well grown with H₂ plasma pre-treatment powers of 400 W while few-layer graphene has been successfully formed under H₂ plasma pre-treatment powers ranging from 100 to 300 W. The formation mechanism is highlighted.

Ultrasonic Activated Biochar and Its Removal of Harmful Substances in Environment

Biochar has been widely used in the fields of environment and energy, and green preparation can make biochar-based materials more environmentally friendly. Particularly, in the low-temperature pyrolysis of biochar, labile C with low biological toxicity is the main influencing factor of bacteria in soil. Therefore, it is worth studying to develop the fabrication technology of low-temperature pyrolysis biochar with rich pore structure. The mechanical effect of ultrasonic cavitation is considered to be an effective strategy for the preparation of biochar. However, the sonochemical effects on biochar remain to be studied. In this review, ultrasonic modification and ultrasonic-chemical modification on biochar has been reviewed. Metal oxide/biochar composites can also be obtained by an ultrasonic-chemical method. It is worth mentioning that there have been some reports on the regeneration of biochar by ultrasound. In addition to ultrasonic preparation of biochar, ultrasound can also trigger the sonocatalytic performance and promote the adsorption ability of biochar for the removal of harmful substances. The catalytic mechanism of ultrasound/biochar needs to be further investigated. For application, biochar prepared by ultrasound has been used for the removal of heavy metals in water, the adsorption of carbon dioxide, and soil remediation.

Preparation, Characterization, and Catalytic Properties of Pd-Graphene Quantum Dot Catalysts

In this study, Pd-graphene quantum dot (Pd-GQD) catalysts were prepared by depositing Pd nanoparticles onto functionalized GQD surfaces, and their morphology and elemental composition were characterized using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The as-prepared Pd-GQD was subsequently employed as a catalyst for the Heck and decarboxylative cross-coupling reactions and was found to exhibit higher catalytic activity than other reference systems. The expanded substrate scope of various substituted aryl iodides further proved that the GQD is an effective support for preparing new heterogeneous catalysts with improved catalytic performances.

Quantum dot synthesis from waste biomass and its applications in energy and bioremediation

Quantum dots (QDs) are getting special attention due to their commendable optical properties and applications. Conventional metal-based QDs have toxicity and non-biodegradability issues, thus it becomes necessary to search for renewable precursor molecules for QDs synthesis. In recent years, biomass-based carbon rich QDs (CQDs) have been introduced which are mainly synthesised via carbonization (pyrolysis and hydrothermal treatment). These CQDs offered higher photostability, biocompatibility, low-toxicity, and easy tunability for physicochemical properties. Exceptional optical properties become a point of attraction for its multifaceted applications in various sectors like fabrication of electrodes and solar cells, conversion of solar energy to electricity, detection of pollutants, designing biosensors, etc. In recent years, a lot of work has been done in this field. This article will summarize these advancements along in a special context to biomass-based QDs and their applications in energy and the environment.

Sonoproduction of nanobiomaterials - A critical review

Ultrasound (US) demonstrates remarkable potential in synthesising nanomaterials, particularly nanobiomaterials targeted towards biomedical applications. This review briefly introduces existing top-down and bottom-up approaches for nanomaterials synthesis and their corresponding synthesis mechanisms, followed by the expounding of US-driven nanomaterials synthesis. Subsequently, the pros and cons of sono-nanotechnology and its advances in the synthesis of nanobiomaterials are drawn based on recent works. US-synthesised nanobiomaterials have improved properties and performance over conventional synthesis methods and most essentially eliminate the need for harsh and expensive chemicals. The sonoproduction of different classes and types of nanobiomaterials such as metal and superparamagnetic nanoparticles (NPs), lipid- and carbohydrate-based NPs, protein microspheres, microgels and other nanocomposites are broadly categorised based on the physical and/or chemical effects induced by US. This review ends on a good note and recognises US-driven synthesis as a pragmatic solution to satisfy the growing demand for nanobiomaterials, nonetheless some technical challenges are highlighted.

Shedding Light on Graphene Quantum Dots: Key Synthetic Strategies, Characterization Tools, and Cutting-Edge Applications

During the last 20 years, the scientific community has shown growing interest towards carbonaceous nanomaterials due to their appealing mechanical, thermal, and optical features, depending on the specific nanoforms. Among these, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) recently emerged as one of the most promising nanomaterials due to their outstanding electrical properties, chemical stability, and intense and tunable photoluminescence, as it is witnessed by a booming number of reported applications, ranging from the biological field to the photovoltaic market. To date, a plethora of synthetic protocols have been investigated to modulate the portfolio of features that GQDs possess and to facilitate the use of these materials for target applications. Considering the number of publications and the rapid evolution of this flourishing field of research, this review aims at providing a broad overview of the most widely established synthetic protocols and offering a detailed review of some specific applications that are attracting researchers’ interest.

Preparation, Marriage Chemistry and Applications of Graphene Quantum Dots-Nanocellulose Composite: A Brief Review

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are zero-dimensional carbon-based materials, while nanocellulose is a nanomaterial that can be derived from naturally occurring cellulose polymers or renewable biomass resources. The unique geometrical, biocompatible and biodegradable properties of both these remarkable nanomaterials have caught the attention of the scientific community in terms of fundamental research aimed at advancing technology. This study reviews the preparation, marriage chemistry and applications of GQDs-nanocellulose composites. The preparation of these composites can be achieved via rapid and simple solution mixing containing known concentration of nanomaterial with a pre-defined composition ratio in a neutral pH medium. They can also be incorporated into other matrices or drop-casted onto substrates, depending on the intended application. Additionally, combining GQDs and nanocellulose has proven to impart new hybrid nanomaterials with excellent performance as well as surface functionality and, therefore, a plethora of applications. Potential applications for GQDs-nanocellulose composites include sensing or, for analytical purposes, injectable 3D printing materials, supercapacitors and light-emitting diodes. This review unlocks windows of research opportunities for GQDs-nanocellulose composites and pave the way for the synthesis and application of more innovative hybrid nanomaterials.

Low-Frequency Ultrasound Coupled with High-Pressure Technologies: Impact of Hybridized Techniques on the Recovery of Phytochemical Compounds

The coupling of innovative technologies has emerged as a smart alternative for the process intensification of bioactive compound extraction from plant matrices. In this regard, the development of hybridized techniques based on the low-frequency and high-power ultrasound and high-pressure technologies, such as supercritical fluid extraction, pressurized liquids extraction, and gas-expanded liquids extraction, can enhance the recovery yields of phytochemicals due to their different action mechanisms. Therefore, this paper reviewed and discussed the current scenario in this field where ultrasound-related technologies are coupled with high-pressure techniques. The main findings, gaps, challenges, advances in knowledge, innovations, and future perspectives were highlighted.
