EEG oscillations in the gamma and alpha range respond differently to spatial frequency

Modulation of the neuronal response in human primary visual cortex by re-entrant projections during retinal input processing as manifest in the visual evoked potential

Initial deflections in the visual evoked potential (VEP) reflect the neuronal process of extracting features from the retinal input; a process not modulated by re-entrant projections. Later deflections in the VEP reflect the neuronal process of combining features into an object, a process referred to as 'object closure' and modulated by re-entrant projections. Our earlier work indicated that the VEP reflects independent neuronal responses processing temporal - and spatial luminance contrast and that these responses arise from an interaction between forward and re-entrant input. In this earlier work, changing the temporal luminance contrast property of a stimulus altered its spatial luminance contrast property. We recorded the VEP in 12 volunteers viewing image pairs of a windmill, regular dartboard or an RMS dartboard rotated by either Π/4, Π/2, 3Π/4 or Π radians with respect to each other. The windmill and regular dartboard had identical white to black ratio, while the two dartboards identical contrast edges per unit area. Rotation varied temporal luminance contrast of a stimulus without affecting its spatial luminance contrast. N75, P100, N135 and P240 amplitude and latency were compared and a source localisation and temporal frequency analysis performed. P100 amplitude signals a neuronal response processing temporal luminance contrast that is modulated by re-entrant projections with fast axonal conduction velocities. N135 and P240 signal the neuronal response processing spatial luminance contrast and is modulated by re-entrant projections with slow axonal conduction velocities. The dorsal stream is interconnected by fast axonal conduction velocities, the ventral stream by slow axonal conduction velocities.

Aligning Event-Related Potentials with Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation for Modulation-a Review

This review aims to demonstrate the connections between event-related potentials (ERPs), event-related oscillations (EROs), and non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS), with a specific focus on transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS). We begin with a short examination and discussion of the relation between ERPs and EROs. Then, we investigate the diverse fields of NIBS, highlighting tACS as a potent tool for modulating neural oscillations and influencing cognitive performance. Emphasizing the impact of tACS on individual ERP components, this article offers insights into the potential of conventional tACS for targeted stimulation of single ERP components. Furthermore, we review recent articles that explore a novel approach of tACS: ERP-aligned tACS. This innovative technique exploits the temporal precision of ERP components, aligning tACS with specific neural events to optimize stimulation effects and target the desired neural response. In conclusion, this review combines current knowledge to explore how ERPs, EROs, and NIBS interact, particularly highlighting the modulatory possibilities offered by tACS. The incorporation of ERP-aligned tACS introduces new opportunities for future research, advancing our understanding of the complex connection between neural oscillations and cognitive processes.

Modulating the difficulty of a visual oddball-like task and P3m amplitude

It is often necessary to modulate the difficulty of an experimental task without changing physical stimulus characteristics that are known to modulate event-related potentials. Here, we developed a new, oddball-like visual discrimination task with varying levels of difficulty despite using almost identical visual stimuli. Gabor patches of one orientation served as frequent standard stimuli with 75% probability. Gabor patches with a slightly different orientation served as infrequent target stimuli (25% probability). Analyzing the behavioral outcomes revealed a successful modulation of task difficulty, i.e. the hard condition revealed decreased d' values and longer reaction times for standard stimuli. In addition, we recorded MEG and computed event-related fields in response to the stimuli. In line with our expectation, the amplitude of the P3m was reduced in the hard condition. We localized the sources of the P3m with a focus on those that are modulated by changes in task difficulty. The sources of P3m modulation by difficulty were found primarily in the centro-parietal regions of both hemispheres. Additionally, we found significant differences in source activity between the easy and hard conditions in parts of the pre and post-central gyrus and inferior parietal lobe. Our findings are in line with previous research suggesting that the brain areas responsible for the conventional P3m generators also contribute to a modulation by task difficulty.

Optimal flickering light stimulation for entraining gamma rhythms in older adults

With aging, optimal parameters of flickering light stimulation (FLS) for gamma entrainment may change in the eyes and brain. We investigated the optimal FLS parameters for gamma entrainment in 35 cognitively normal old adults by comparing event-related synchronization (ERS) and spectral Granger causality (sGC) of entrained gamma rhythms between different luminance intensities, colors, and flickering frequencies of FLSs. ERS entrained by 700 cd/m² FLS and 32 Hz or 34 Hz FLSs was stronger than that entrained by 400 cd/m² at Pz (p < 0.01) and 38 Hz or 40 Hz FLSs, respectively, at both Pz (p < 0.05) and Fz (p < 0.01). Parieto-occipital-to-frontotemporal connectivities of gamma rhythm entrained by 700 cd/m² FLS and 32 Hz or 34 Hz FLSs were also stronger than those entrained by 400 cd/m² at Pz (p < 0.01) and 38 Hz or 40 Hz FLSs, respectively (p < 0.001). ERS and parieto-occipital-to-frontotemporal connectivities of entrained gamma rhythms did not show significant difference between white and red lights. Adverse effects were comparable between different parameters. In older adults, 700 cd/m² FLS at 32 Hz or 34 Hz can entrain a strong gamma rhythm in the whole brain with tolerable adverse effects.

Parallel processing in human visual cortex revealed through the influence of their neural responses on the visual evoked potential

The neural response in the human visual system is composed of magno-, parvo- and koniocellular input from the retina. Signal differences from functional imaging between health and individuals with a cognitive weakness are attributed to a dysfunction of a specific retinal input. Yet, anatomical interconnections within the human visual system obscure individual contribution to the neural response in V1. Deflections in the visual evoked potential (VEP) arise from an interaction between electric dipoles, their strength determined by the size of the neural population active during temporal - and spatial luminance contrast processing. To investigate interaction between these neural responses, we recorded the VEP over visual cortex of 14 healthy adults viewing four series of windmill patterns. Within a series, the relative area white in a pattern varied systematically. Between series, the number of sectors across which this area was distributed doubled. These patterns were viewed as pattern alternating and on-/off stimuli. P100/P1 amplitude increased linearly with the relative area white in the pattern, while N135/N1 and P240/P2 amplitude increased with the number of sectors of which the area white was distributed. The decreases P100 amplitude with increasing number of sectors is attributed to an interaction between electric dipoles located in granular and supragranular layers of V1. Differences between the VEP components obtained during a pattern reversing display and following pattern onset are accounted for by the transient and sustained nature of neural responses processing temporal - and spatial luminance contrast and ability of these responses to manifest in the VEP.

Oscillatory signatures of Repetition Suppression and Novelty Detection reveal altered induced visual responses in early deafness

The ability to differentiate between repeated and novel events represents a fundamental property of the visual system. Neural responses are typically reduced upon stimulus repetition, a phenomenon called Repetition Suppression (RS). On the contrary, following a novel visual stimulus, the neural response is generally enhanced, a phenomenon referred to as Novelty Detection (ND). Here, we aimed to investigate the impact of early deafness on the oscillatory signatures of RS and ND brain responses. To this aim, electrophysiological data were acquired in early deaf and hearing control individuals during processing of repeated and novel visual events unattended by participants. By studying evoked and induced oscillatory brain activities, as well as inter-trial phase coherence, we linked response modulations to feedback and/or feedforward processes. Results revealed selective experience-dependent changes on both RS and ND mechanisms. Compared to hearing controls, early deaf individuals displayed: (i) greater attenuation of the response following stimulus repetition, selectively in the induced theta-band (4-7 Hz); (ii) reduced desynchronization following the onset of novel visual stimuli, in the induced alpha and beta bands (8-12 and 13-25 Hz); (iii) comparable modulation of evoked responses and inter-trial phase coherence. The selectivity of the effects in the induced responses parallels findings observed in the auditory cortex of deaf animal models following intracochlear electric stimulation. The present results support the idea that early deafness alters induced oscillatory activity and the functional tuning of basic visual processing.

α-tACS over the somatosensory cortex enhances tactile spatial discrimination in healthy subjects with low alpha activity

INTRODUCTION

Spontaneous oscillations in the somatosensory cortex, especially of the alpha (8 - 14 Hz) and gamma (60 - 80 Hz) frequencies, affect tactile perception; moreover, these oscillations can be selectively modulated by frequency-matched transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) on the basis of ongoing oscillatory brain activity. To examine whether tACS can actually improve tactile perception via alpha and gamma modulation, we measured the effects of 10-Hz and 70-Hz tACS (α- and γ-tACS) on the left somatosensory cortex on right-finger tactile spatial orientation discrimination, and the associations between performance changes and individual alpha and gamma activities.

METHODS

Fifteen neurologically healthy subjects were recruited into this study. Electroencephalography (EEG) was performed before the first day, to assess the normal alpha- and gamma-activity levels. A grating orientation discrimination task was performed before and during 10-Hz and 70-Hz tACS.

RESULTS

The 10-Hz tACS protocol decreased the grating orientation discrimination threshold, primarily in subjects with low alpha event-related synchronization (ERS). In contrast, the 70-Hz tACS had no effect on the grating orientation discrimination threshold.

CONCLUSIONS

This study showed that 10-Hz tACS can improve tactile orientation discrimination in subjects with low alpha activity. Alpha-frequency tACS may help identify the contributions of these oscillations to other neurophysiological and pathological processes.

An investigation into the relationship between stimulus property, neural response and its manifestation in the visual evoked potential involving retinal resolution

The visual evoked potential (VEP) has been shown to reflect the size of the neural population activated by a processing mechanism selective to the temporal - and spatial luminance contrast property of a stimulus. We set out to better understand how the factors determining the neural response associated with these mechanisms. To do so we recorded the VEP from 14 healthy volunteers viewing two series of pattern reversing stimuli with identical temporal-and spatial luminance contrast properties. In one series the size of the elements increased towards the edge of the image, in the other it decreased. In the former element size was congruent with receptive field size across eccentricity, in the later it was incongruent. P100 amplitude to the incongruent series exceeded that obtained to the congruent series. Using electric dipoles due the excitatory neural response we accounted for this using dipole cancellation of electric dipoles of opposite polarity originating in supra- and infragranular layers of V1. The phasic neural response in granular lamina of V1 exhibited magnocellular characteristics, the neural response outside of the granular lamina exhibited parvocellular characteristics and was modulated by re-entrant projections. Using electric current density, we identified areas of the dorsal followed by areas of the ventral stream as the source of the re-entrant signal modulating infragranular activity. Our work demonstrates that the VEP does not signal reflect the overall level of a neural response but is the result of an interaction between electric dipoles originating from neural responses in different lamina of V1.

Neural, functional, and aesthetic impacts of spatially heterogeneous flicker: A potential role of natural flicker

Spatially heterogeneous flicker, characterized by probabilistic and locally independent luminance modulations, abounds in nature. It is generated by flames, water surfaces, rustling leaves, and so on, and it is pleasant to the senses. It affords spatiotemporal multistability that allows sensory activation conforming to the biases of the visual system, thereby generating the perception of spontaneous motion and likely facilitating the calibration of motion detectors. One may thus hypothesize that spatially heterogeneous flicker might potentially provide restoring stimuli to the visual system that engage fluent (requiring minimal top-down control) and self-calibrating processes. Here, we present some converging behavioral and electrophysiological evidence consistent with this idea. Spatially heterogeneous (multistable) flicker (relative to controls matched in temporal statistics) reduced posterior EEG (electroencephalography) beta power implicated in long-range neural interactions that impose top-down influences on sensory processing. Further, the degree of spatiotemporal multistability, the amount of posterior beta-power reduction, and the aesthetic responses to flicker were closely associated. These results are consistent with the idea that the pleasantness of natural flicker may derive from its spatiotemporal multistability that affords fluent and self-calibrating visual processing.

Spontaneous Visual Imagery During Meditation for Creating Visual Art: An EEG and Brain Stimulation Case Study

Experienced meditators often report spontaneous visual imagery during deep meditation in the form of lights or other types of visual images. These experiences are usually interpreted as an "encounters with light" and gain mystical meaning. Contrary to the well-studied intentional and controlled visual imagery, spontaneous imagery is poorly understood, yet it plays an important role in creativity of visual artists. The neural correlates of such experiences are indeed hard to capture in laboratory settings. In this case study we aimed to investigate the neural correlates of spontaneous visual imagery in an artist who experiences strong visual imagery during meditation. She uses these images to create visual art. We recorded her EEG during seven meditation sessions in which she experienced visual imagery episodes (visions). To examine the functional role of the neural oscillations we also conducted three separate meditation sessions under different transcranial alternating current (tACS) brain stimulation: alpha (10 Hz), gamma (40 Hz) and sham. We observed a robust increase in occipital gamma power (30-70 Hz) during the deepest stage of meditation across all sessions. This gamma increase was consistent with the experience of spontaneous visual imagery: higher during visions compared to no visions. Alpha tACS was found to affect the contents of her visual imagery, making them sharper, shorter and causing more visions to occur; the artist reported that these sharp images were too detailed to be used in her art. Interestingly, gamma and sham stimulation had no impact on the visual imagery contents. Our findings raise the hypothesis that occipital gamma might be a neural marker of spontaneous visual imagery, which emerges in certain meditation practices of experienced meditators.

Shades of grey; Assessing the contribution of the magno- and parvocellular systems to neural processing of the retinal input in the human visual system from the influence of neural population size and its discharge activity on the VEP

INTRODUCTION

Retinal input processing in the human visual system involves a phasic and tonic neural response. We investigated the role of the magno- and parvocellular systems by comparing the influence of the active neural population size and its discharge activity on the amplitude and latency of four VEP components.

METHOD

We recorded the scalp electric potential of 20 human volunteers viewing a series of dartboard images presented as a pattern reversing and pattern on-/offset stimulus. These patterns were designed to vary both neural population size coding the temporal- and spatial luminance contrast property and the discharge activity of the population involved in a systematic manner.

RESULTS

When the VEP amplitude reflected the size of the neural population coding the temporal luminance contrast property of the image, the influence of luminance contrast followed the contrast response function of the parvocellular system. When the VEP amplitude reflected the size of the neural population responding to the spatial luminance contrast property the image, the influence of luminance contrast followed the contrast response function of the magnocellular system. The latencies of the VEP components examined exhibited the same behavior across our stimulus series.

CONCLUSIONS

This investigation demonstrates the complex interplay of the magno- and parvocellular systems on the neural response as captured by the VEP. It also demonstrates a linear relationship between stimulus property, neural response, and the VEP and reveals the importance of feedback projections in modulating the ongoing neural response. In doing so, it corroborates the conclusions of our previous study.

Stimuli to differentiate the neural response at successive stages of visual processing using the VEP from human visual cortex

BACKGROUND

Clarifying the enigmatic relationship between stimulus property, neural response and the evoked potential is essential if non-invasive functional imaging is to make a meaningful contribution to the understanding of how maturational or degenerative processes influence brain activity. Visual cortex has proven a favourite target to elucidate this relationship. However, to date most studies involving the visual system have yielded inconsistent results or have been strongly criticised.

NEW METHOD

We developed a set of three visual stimuli, two of which either had the same low- or high spatial frequency characteristic. Adult volunteers viewed these as pattern reversing stimuli while the scalp electric potential was recorded using a 10-10 array of electrodes.

RESULTS

Established processing mechanisms of the primate visual system enabled us to link the amplitude of the N75 and P100 to the size of the neural population processing the temporal luminance contrast, and the amplitude of the N135 and P240 to the size of the neural processing the spatial luminance contrast in our stimuli. Calculating the distribution of current source density enabled us to identify the neural source of each VEP component.

CONCLUSIONS

Demonstrating a direct relationship between the temporal- and spatial luminance contrast properties of our stimuli and the size of the neural population involved provides a better understanding of the nature of the relationship between stimulus property, neural response and the VEP. It also shows that EEG can contribute in a significant manner to the study of the influence of maturational or degenerative processes on brain activity.

Gamma oscillations in the superior colliculus and pulvinar in response to faces support discrimination performance in monkeys

The subcortical visual pathway including the superior colliculus (SC), pulvinar, and amygdala has been implicated in unconscious visual processing of faces, eyes, and gaze direction in blindsight. Our previous studies reported that monkey SC and pulvinar neurons responded preferentially to images of faces while performing a delayed non-matching to sample (DNMS) task to discriminate different visual stimuli (Nguyen et al., 2013, 2014). However, the contribution of SC and pulvinar neurons to the discrimination of the facial images and subsequent behavioral performance remains unknown. Since gamma oscillations have been implicated in sensory and cognitive processes as well as behavioral execution, we hypothesized that gamma oscillations during neuronal responses might contribute to achieving the appropriate behavioral performance (i.e., a correct response). In the present study, we re-analyzed those neuronal responses in the monkey SC and pulvinar to investigate possible relationships between gamma oscillations in these neurons and behavioral performance (correct response ratios) during the DNMS task. Gamma oscillations of SC and pulvinar neuronal activity were analyzed in three phases around the stimulus onset [inter-trial interval (ITI): 1000ms before trial onset; Early: 0-200ms after stimulus onset; and Late: 300-500ms after stimulus onset]. We found that human facial images elicited stronger gamma oscillations in the early phase than the ITI and late phase in both the SC and pulvinar neurons. Furthermore, there was a significant correlation between strengths of gamma oscillations in the early phase and behavioral performance in both the SC and pulvinar. The results suggest that gamma oscillatory activity in the SC and pulvinar contributes to successful behavioral performance during unconscious perceptual and behavioral processes.

To see or not to see; the ability of the magno- and parvocellular response to manifest itself in the VEP determines its appearance to a pattern reversing and pattern onset stimulus

INTRODUCTION

The relationship between stimulus property, brain activity, and the VEP is still a matter of uncertainty.

METHOD

We recorded the VEP of 43 volunteers when viewing a series of dartboard images presented as both a pattern reversing and pattern onset/offset stimulus. Across the dartboard images, the total stimulus area undergoing a luminance contrast change was varied in a graded manner.

RESULTS

We confirmed the presence of two independent neural processing stages. The amplitude of VEP components across our pattern reversing stimuli signaled a phasic neural response based on a temporal luminance contrast selective mechanism. The amplitude of VEP components across the pattern onset stimuli signaled both a phasic and a tonic neural response based on a temporal- and spatial luminance contrast selective mechanism respectively. Oscillation frequencies in the VEP suggested modulation of the phasic neural response by feedback from areas of the dorsal stream, while feedback from areas of the ventral stream modulated the tonic neural response. Each processing stage generated a sink and source phase in the VEP. Source localization indicated that during the sink phase electric current density was highest in V1, while during the source phase electric current density was highest in extra-striate cortex. Our model successfully predicted the appearance of the VEP to our images whether presented as a pattern reversing or a pattern onset/offset stimulus.

CONCLUSIONS

Focussing on the effects of a phasic and tonic response rather than contrast response function on the VEP, enabled us to develop a theory linking stimulus property, neural activity and the VEP.

On the relationship between cortical excitability and visual oscillatory responses - A concurrent tDCS-MEG study

Neuronal oscillations in the alpha band (8-12Hz) in visual cortex are considered to instantiate 'attentional gating' via the inhibition of activity in regions representing task-irrelevant parts of space. In contrast, visual gamma-band activity (40-100Hz) is regarded as representing a bottom-up drive from incoming visual information, with increased synchronisation producing a stronger feedforward impulse for relevant information. However, little is known about the direct relationship between excitability of the visual cortex and these oscillatory mechanisms. In this study we used transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in an Oz-Cz montage in order to stimulate visual cortex, concurrently recording whole-brain oscillatory activity using magnetoencephalography (MEG) whilst participants performed a visual task known to produce strong modulations of alpha- and gamma-band activity. We found that visual stimuli produced expected modulations of alpha and gamma - presenting a moving annulus stimulus led to a strong gamma increase and alpha decrease - and that this pattern was observable both during active (anodal and cathodal) tDCS and sham tDCS. However, tDCS did not seem to produce systematic alterations of these oscillatory responses. The present study thus demonstrates that concurrent tDCS/MEG of the visual system is a feasible tool for investigating visual neuronal oscillations, and we discuss potential reasons for the apparent inability of tDCS to effectively change the amplitude of visual stimulus induced oscillatory responses in the current study.

Early and late effects of objecthood and spatial frequency on event-related potentials and gamma band activity

BACKGROUND

The visual system may process spatial frequency information in a low-to-high, coarse-to-fine sequence. In particular, low and high spatial frequency information may be processed via different pathways during object recognition, with LSF information projected rapidly to frontal areas and HSF processed later in visual ventral areas. In an electroencephalographic study, we examined the time course of information processing for images filtered to contain different ranges of spatial frequencies. Participants viewed either high spatial frequency (HSF), low spatial frequency (LSF), or unfiltered, broadband (BB) images of objects or non-object textures, classifying them as showing either man-made or natural objects, or non-objects. Event-related potentials (ERPs) and evoked and total gamma band activity (eGBA and tGBA) recorded using the electroencephalogram were compared for object and non-object images across the different spatial frequency ranges.

RESULTS

The visual P1 showed independent modulations by object and spatial frequency, while for the N1 these factors interacted. The P1 showed more positive amplitudes for objects than non-objects, and more positive amplitudes for BB than for HSF images, which in turn evoked more positive amplitudes than LSF images. The peak-to-peak N1 showed that the N1 was much reduced for BB non-objects relative to all other images, while HSF and LSF non-objects still elicited as negative an N1 as objects. In contrast, eGBA was influenced by spatial frequency and not objecthood, while tGBA showed a stronger response to objects than non-objects.

CONCLUSIONS

Different pathways are involved in the processing of low and high spatial frequencies during object recognition, as reflected in interactions between objecthood and spatial frequency in the visual N1 component. Total gamma band seems to be related to a late, probably high-level representational process.

EEG gamma-band activity during audiovisual speech comprehension in different noise environments

The presence of cross-modal stochastic resonance in different noise environments has been proved in previous behavioral and event-related potential studies, while it was still unclear whether the gamma-band oscillation study was another evidence of cross-modal stochastic resonance. The multisensory gain of gamma-band activity between the audiovisual (AV) and auditory-only conditions in different noise environments was analyzed. Videos of face motion articulating words concordant with different levels of pink noise were used as stimuli. Signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) of 0, -4, -8, -12 and -16 dB were selected to measure the speech recognition accuracy and EEG activity for 20 healthy subjects. The power and phase of EEG gamma-band oscillations increased in a time window of 50-90 ms. The multisensory gains of evoked and total activity, as well as phase-locking factor, were greatest at the -12 dB SNR, which were consistent with the behavioral result. The multisensory gain of gamma-band activity showed an inverted U-shaped curve as a function of SNR. This finding confirmed the presence of cross-modal stochastic resonance. In addition, there was a significant correlation between evoked activity and phase-locking factor of gamma-band at five different SNRs. Gamma-band oscillation was believed to play a role in the rapid processing and information linkage strengthening of AV modalities in the early stage of cognitive processes.

Multiple forms of contour grouping deficits in schizophrenia: what is the role of spatial frequency?

Schizophrenia patients poorly perceive Kanizsa figures and integrate co-aligned contour elements (Gabors). They also poorly process low spatial frequencies (SFs), which presumably reflects dysfunction along the dorsal pathway. Can contour grouping deficits be explained in terms of the spatial frequency content of the display elements? To address the question, we tested patients and matched controls on three contour grouping paradigms in which the SF composition was modulated. In the Kanizsa task, subjects discriminated quartets of sectored circles ("pac-men") that either formed or did not form Kanizsa shapes (illusory and fragmented conditions, respectively). In contour integration, subjects identified the screen quadrant thought to contain a closed chain of co-circular Gabors. In collinear facilitation, subjects attempted to detect a central low-contrast element flanked by collinear or orthogonal high-contrast elements, and facilitation corresponded to the amount by which collinear flankers reduced contrast thresholds. We varied SF by modifying the element features in the Kanizsa task and by scaling the entire stimulus display in the remaining tasks (SFs ranging from 4 to 12 cycles/deg). Irrespective of SF, patients were worse at discriminating illusory, but not fragmented shapes. Contrary to our hypothesis, collinear facilitation and contour integration were abnormal in the clinical group only for the higher SF (>=10 c/deg). Grouping performance correlated with clinical variables, such as conceptual disorganization, general symptoms, and levels of functioning. In schizophrenia, three forms of contour grouping impairments prominently arise and cannot be attributed to poor low SF processing. Neurobiological and clinical implications are discussed.

Temporal sampling in vision and the implications for dyslexia

It has recently been suggested that dyslexia may manifest as a deficit in the neural synchrony underlying language-based codes (Goswami, 2011), such that the phonological deficits apparent in dyslexia occur as a consequence of poor synchronisation of oscillatory brain signals to the sounds of language. There is compelling evidence to support this suggestion, and it provides an intriguing new development in understanding the aetiology of dyslexia. It is undeniable that dyslexia is associated with poor phonological coding, however, reading is also a visual task, and dyslexia has also been associated with poor visual coding, particularly visuo-spatial sensitivity. It has been hypothesized for some time that specific frequency oscillations underlie visual perception. Although little research has been done looking specifically at dyslexia and cortical frequency oscillations, it is possible to draw on converging evidence from visual tasks to speculate that similar deficits could occur in temporal frequency oscillations in the visual domain in dyslexia. Thus, here the plausibility of a visual correlate of the Temporal Sampling Framework is considered, leading to specific hypotheses and predictions for future research. A common underlying neural mechanism in dyslexia, may subsume qualitatively different manifestations of reading difficulty, which is consistent with the heterogeneity of the disorder, and may open the door for a new generation of exciting research.

Low-level and high-level modulations of fixational saccades and high frequency oscillatory brain activity in a visual object classification task

Until recently induced gamma-band activity (GBA) was considered a neural marker of cortical object representation. However, induced GBA in the electroencephalogram (EEG) is susceptible to artifacts caused by miniature fixational saccades. Recent studies have demonstrated that fixational saccades also reflect high-level representational processes. Do high-level as opposed to low-level factors influence fixational saccades? What is the effect of these factors on artifact-free GBA? To investigate this, we conducted separate eye tracking and EEG experiments using identical designs. Participants classified line drawings as objects or non-objects. To introduce low-level differences, contours were defined along different directions in cardinal color space: S-cone-isolating, intermediate isoluminant, or a full-color stimulus, the latter containing an additional achromatic component. Prior to the classification task, object discrimination thresholds were measured and stimuli were scaled to matching suprathreshold levels for each participant. In both experiments, behavioral performance was best for full-color stimuli and worst for S-cone isolating stimuli. Saccade rates 200–700 ms after stimulus onset were modulated independently by low and high-level factors, being higher for full-color stimuli than for S-cone isolating stimuli and higher for objects. Low-amplitude evoked GBA and total GBA were observed in very few conditions, showing that paradigms with isoluminant stimuli may not be ideal for eliciting such responses. We conclude that cortical loops involved in the processing of objects are preferentially excited by stimuli that contain achromatic information. Their activation can lead to relatively early exploratory eye movements even for foveally-presented stimuli.

Gamma oscillatory amplitude encodes stimulus intensity in primary somatosensory cortex

Gamma oscillations have previously been linked to pain perception and it has been hypothesized that they may have a potential role in encoding pain intensity. Stimulus response experiments have reported an increase in activity in the primary somatosensory cortex (SI) with increasing stimulus intensity, but the specific role of oscillatory dynamics in this change in activation remains unclear. In this study, Magnetoencephalography (MEG) was used to investigate the changes in cortical oscillations during four different intensities of a train of electrical stimuli to the right index finger, ranging from low sensation to strong pain. In those participants showing changes in evoked oscillatory gamma in SI during stimulation, the strength of the gamma power was found to increase with increasing stimulus intensity at both pain and sub-pain thresholds. These results suggest that evoked gamma oscillations in SI are not specific to pain but may have a role in encoding somatosensory stimulus intensity.

Early gamma oscillations during rapid auditory processing in children with a language-learning impairment: changes in neural mass activity after training

Children with language-learning impairment (LLI) have consistently shown difficulty with tasks requiring precise, rapid auditory processing. Remediation based on neural plasticity assumes that the temporal precision of neural coding can be improved by intensive training protocols. Here, we examined the extent to which early oscillatory responses in auditory cortex change after audio-visual training, using combined source modeling and time-frequency analysis of the human electroencephalogram (EEG). Twenty-one elementary school students diagnosed with LLI underwent the intervention for an average of 32 days. Pre- and post-training assessments included standardized language/literacy tests and EEG recordings in response to fast-rate tone doublets. Twelve children with typical language development were also tested twice, with no intervention given. Behaviorally, improvements on measures of language were observed in the LLI group following completion of training. During the first EEG assessment, we found reduced amplitude and phase-locking of early (45-75 ms) oscillations in the gamma-band range (29-52 Hz), specifically in the LLI group, for the second stimulus of the tone doublet. Amplitude reduction for the second tone was no longer evident for the LLI children post-intervention, although these children still exhibited attenuated phase-locking. Our findings suggest that specific aspects of inefficient sensory cortical processing in LLI are ameliorated after training.

Time course of information processing in visual and haptic object classification

Vision identifies objects rapidly and efficiently. In contrast, object recognition by touch is much slower. Furthermore, haptics usually serially accumulates information from different parts of objects, whereas vision typically processes object information in parallel. Is haptic object identification slower simply due to sequential information acquisition and the resulting memory load or due to more fundamental processing differences between the senses? To compare the time course of visual and haptic object recognition, we slowed visual processing using a novel, restricted viewing technique. In an electroencephalographic (EEG) experiment, participants discriminated familiar, nameable from unfamiliar, unnamable objects both visually and haptically. Analyses focused on the evoked and total fronto-central theta-band (5-7 Hz; a marker of working memory) and the occipital upper alpha-band (10-12 Hz; a marker of perceptual processing) locked to the onset of classification. Decreases in total upper alpha-band activity for haptic identification of objects indicate a likely processing role of multisensory extrastriate areas. Long-latency modulations of alpha-band activity differentiated between familiar and unfamiliar objects in haptics but not in vision. In contrast, theta-band activity showed a general increase over time for the slowed-down visual recognition task only. We conclude that haptic object recognition relies on common representations with vision but also that there are fundamental differences between the senses that do not merely arise from differences in their speed of processing.

The dynamics of EEG gamma responses to unpleasant visual stimuli: from local activity to functional connectivity

Many electroencephalographic (EEG) studies on the cortical dynamics induced by unpleasant picture viewing demonstrated the modulation of event-related potentials (ERPs) components as a function of valence and the increase of gamma band responses to emotional stimuli; while only a few studies investigated phase synchronization phenomena such as inter-trial or between regions phase locking of gamma responses to emotional stimulation. The aim of this study was to provide a complete description of the cortical dynamics induced by unpleasant and neutral pictures viewing, from the ERP averages to gamma rhythm modulation, and its phase synchronization. Gamma rhythm modulation was estimated by the event-related synchronization (ERS) approach, and phase synchrony between trials and between cortical regions was studied by extending the phase-locking statistics (PLS) approach. Consistent with previous literature, an increase in P300 and late positive potential and an increase in gamma activity during viewing of unpleasant pictures as compared to neutral ones were found. No inter-trial synchronization was evoked by the stimuli, whereas widespread phase locking between sites was identified. In particular, differences in gamma synchronization between unpleasant and neutral stimuli were found. Specifically, at early (0-250 ms) lags from stimulus onset, in the 38-45 Hz gamma interval, stronger inter-site synchronizations for the unpleasant stimuli, even though quite widespread across the scalp, mainly involved the interhemispheric synchronization between temporal and frontal regions. In contrast, in the 30-37 Hz gamma interval, stronger synchronizations for the responses to neutral trials were found in the 500-750 time interval, mainly involving the temporo-parietal regions. These findings suggest that the full elaboration of unpleasant stimuli requires a tight interhemispheric communication between temporal and frontal regions that is realized by means of phase synchronization at about 40 Hz. In addition, in contrast with the idea of a broadband modulation of high-frequency activity by cognitive/emotional stimuli, the present findings i.e. stronger BRS responses to either emotional or neutral trials at specific frequency and time range, indicate that specific intervals of gamma activity could be each primarily involved in a specific aspect of stimulus processing.

A pool of pairs of related objects (POPORO) for investigating visual semantic integration: behavioral and electrophysiological validation

Semantic processing of verbal and visual stimuli has been investigated in semantic violation or semantic priming paradigms in which a stimulus is either related or unrelated to a previously established semantic context. A hallmark of semantic priming is the N400 event-related potential (ERP)--a deflection of the ERP that is more negative for semantically unrelated target stimuli. The majority of studies investigating the N400 and semantic integration have used verbal material (words or sentences), and standardized stimulus sets with norms for semantic relatedness have been published for verbal but not for visual material. However, semantic processing of visual objects (as opposed to words) is an important issue in research on visual cognition. In this study, we present a set of 800 pairs of semantically related and unrelated visual objects. The images were rated for semantic relatedness by a sample of 132 participants. Furthermore, we analyzed low-level image properties and matched the two semantic categories according to these features. An ERP study confirmed the suitability of this image set for evoking a robust N400 effect of semantic integration. Additionally, using a general linear modeling approach of single-trial data, we also demonstrate that low-level visual image properties and semantic relatedness are in fact only minimally overlapping. The image set is available for download from the authors' website. We expect that the image set will facilitate studies investigating mechanisms of semantic and contextual processing of visual stimuli.

From spatial frequency contrast to edge preponderance: the differential modulation of early visual evoked potentials by natural scene stimuli

The contrast response function of early visual evoked potentials elicited by sinusoidal gratings is known to exhibit characteristic potentials closely associated with the processes of parvocellular and magnocellular pathways. Specifically, the N1 component has been linked with parvocellular processes, while the P1 component has been linked with magnocellular processes. However, little is known regarding the response properties of the N1 and P1 components during the processing and encoding of complex (i.e., broadband) stimuli such as natural scenes. Here, we examine how established physical characteristics of natural scene imagery modulate the N1 and P1 components in humans by providing a systematic investigation of component modulation as visual stimuli are gradually built up from simple sinusoidal gratings to highly complex natural scene imagery. The results suggest that the relative dominance in signal output of the N1 and P1 components is dependent on spatial frequency (SF) luminance contrast for simple stimuli up to natural scene imagery possessing few edges. However, such a dependency shifts to a dominant N1 signal for natural scenes possessing abundant edge content and operates independently of SF luminance contrast.

Gamma in motion: pattern reversal elicits stronger gamma-band responses than motion

Previous studies showed higher gamma-band responses (GBRs, ≈40 Hz) of the electroencephalogram (EEG) for moving compared to stationary stimuli. However, it is unclear whether this modulation by motion reflects a special responsiveness of the GBR to the stimulus feature "motion," or whether GBR enhancements of similar magnitude can be elicited also by a salient change within a static stimulus that does not include motion. Therefore, we measured the EEG of healthy subjects watching stationary square wave gratings of high contrast that either started to move or reversed their black and white pattern shortly after their onset. The strong contrast change of the pattern reversal represented a salient but motionless change within the grating that was compared to the onset of the stationary grating and the motion onset. Induced and evoked GBRs were analyzed for all three display conditions. In order to assess the influence of fixational eye movements on the induced GBRs, we also examined the time courses of microsaccade rates during the three display conditions. Amplitudes of both evoked and induced GBRs were stronger for pattern reversal than for motion onset. There was no significant amplitude difference between the onsets of the stationary and moving gratings. However, mean frequencies of the induced GBR were ~10 Hz higher in response to the onsets of moving compared to stationary gratings. Furthermore, the modulations of the induced GBR did not parallel the modulations of microsaccade rate, indicating that our induced GBRs reflect neuronal processes. These results suggest that, within the gamma-band range, the encoding of moving gratings in early visual cortex is primarily based on an upward frequency shift, whereas contrast changes within static gratings are reflected by amplitude enhancement.

Feature selection in the human brain: electrophysiological correlates of sensory enhancement and feature integration

This study examined the latency and amplitude of cortical processes associated with feature-based visual selective attention, using frequency-domain and time-domain measures derived from dense-array electroencephalography. Participants were asked to identify targets based on conjunctions of three types of object features (color, size, and completeness). This procedure aimed to examine (1) the modulation of sensory responses to one or more stimulus features characterizing an object and (2) the facilitation and reduction effects associated with competing features, attended and unattended, in the same object. The selection negativity, an event-related potential measure of sensory amplification for attended features, showed a parametric increase of amplitude as a function of the number of attended features. Late oscillations in the gamma band range were also smaller for stimuli with one or more non-attended visual features but were enhanced for stimuli sharing the overall gestalt with the target. The latency of this late gamma modulation was delayed when two target features were combined, compared to one single discriminative feature. Latency analyses also showed that late bursts of induced high-frequency oscillatory activity peaked around 60 ms later than the selection negativity. Oscillatory activity reflected both selective amplification and competition between object features. These results suggest that sensory amplification of selected features is followed by integrative processing in more widespread networks. Oscillatory activity in these networks is reduced by distraction and is enhanced when attended features can be mapped to specific action.

Human gamma-band activity: a review on cognitive and behavioral correlates and network models

Gamma-band oscillations (roughly 30-100 Hz) in human and animal EEG have received considerable attention in the past due to their correlations with cognitive processes. Here, we want to sketch how some of the higher cognitive functions can be explained by memory processes which are known to modulate gamma activity. Especially, the function of binding together the multiple features of a perceived object requires a comparison with contents stored in memory. In addition, we review recent findings about the actual behavioral relevance of human gamma-band activity. Interestingly, rather simple models of spiking neurons are not only able to generate oscillatory activity within the gamma-band range, but even show modulations of these oscillations in line with findings from human experiments.

Spike-timing-dependent plasticity leads to gamma band responses in a neural network

Early gamma band responses of the human electroencephalogram have been identified as an early interface linking top-down and bottom-up processing. This was based on findings that observed strong sensitivity of this signal to stimulus size and at the same time, to processes of attention and memory. Here, we simulate these findings in a simple random network of biologically plausible spiking neurons. During a learning phase, different stimuli were presented to the network and the synaptic connections were modified according to a spike-timing-dependent plasticity learning rule. In a subsequent test phase, we stimulated the network with (i) patterns of different sizes to simulate bottom-up effects and (ii) with patterns that were or were not presented during the learning phase. The network displayed qualitatively similar behavior as early gamma band responses measured from the scalp of human subjects: there was a general increase in response strength with increasing stimulus size and stronger responses for learned stimuli. We demonstrated that within one neural architecture early gamma band responses can be modulated both by bottom-up factors and by basal learning mechanisms mediated via spike-timing-dependent plasticity.

Inter- and intra-individual covariations of hemodynamic and oscillatory gamma responses in the human cortex

The time course of local field potentials (LFPs) displaying typical discharge frequencies in the gamma frequency range highly correlates with the blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signal in response to rotating checkerboard stimuli in animals. In humans, oscillatory gamma-band responses (GBRs) show strong inter-individual variations in frequency and amplitude but considerable intra-individual reliability indicating that individual gamma activity reflects a personal trait. While the functional role of these GBRs is still debated, investigations combining electroencephalography–functional magnetic resonance imaging (EEG–fMRI) measurements provide a tool to obtain further insights into the underlying functional architecture of the human brain and will shed light onto the understanding of the dynamic relation between the BOLD signal and the properties of the electrical activity recorded on the scalp. We investigated the relation between the hemodynamic response and evoked gamma-band response (eGBR) to visual stimulation. We tested the hypothesis that the amplitude of human eGBRs and BOLD responses covary intra-individually as a function of stimulation as well as inter-individually as a function of gamma-trait. Seventeen participants performed visual discrimination tasks during separate EEG and fMRI recordings. Results revealed that visual stimuli that evoked high GBRs also elicited strong BOLD responses in the human V1/V2 complex. Furthermore, inter-individual variations of BOLD responses to visual stimuli in the bilateral primary (Area 17) and secondary (Area V5/MT) visual cortex and the right hippocampal formation were correlated with the individual gamma-trait of the subjects. The present study further supports the notion that neural oscillations in the gamma frequency range are involved in the cascade of neural processes that underlie the hemodynamic responses measured with fMRI.

Independent component analysis reveals atypical electroencephalographic activity during visual perception in individuals with autism

BACKGROUND

Individuals with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) experience atypical visual perception, yet the etiology of this remains unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the neural correlates of visual perception in individuals with and without ASD by carrying out a detailed analysis of the dynamic brain processes elicited by perception of a simple visual stimulus.

METHODS

We investigated perception in 20 individuals with ASD and 20 control subjects with electroencephalography (EEG). Visual evoked potentials elicited by Gabor patches of varying spatial frequency and stimulus-induced changes in alpha- and gamma-frequency bands of independent components were compared in those with and without ASD.

RESULTS

By decomposing the EEG data into independent components, we identified several processes that contributed to the average event related potential recorded at the scalp. Differences between the ASD and control groups were found only in some of these processes. Specifically, in those components that were in or near the striate or extrastriate cortex, stimulus spatial frequency exerted a smaller effect on induced increases in alpha- and gamma-band power, and time to peak alpha-band power was reduced, in the participants with ASD. Induced alpha-band power of components that were in or near the cingulate gyrus was increased in the participants with ASD, and the components that were in or near the parietal cortex did not differ between the two groups.

CONCLUSIONS

Atypical processing is evident in individuals with ASD during perception of simple visual stimuli. The implications of these data for existing theories of atypical perception in ASD are discussed.

Alpha Brain Oscillations and Inhibitory Control

A major challenge for developmental cognitive neuroscience is to understand how changes in cognitive functions related to aging are associated with changes in the neuronal information processing architecture. Previous studies on EEG event-related brain oscillations suggest functional changes in alpha-bands with age during sensory and memory tasks. Specifically, the topographical distribution of both single-trial lower and upper alpha magnitude and the corresponding phase coherence is altered in elderly persons. Thus, alpha oscillations, associated not only with sensory, but also with sensorimotor functions, may be altered with age. Compensatory mechanisms, possibly reflected in increased frontal alpha synchronization, may thereby be of profound relevance. The present study investigates age-related differences in the modulation of alpha oscillatory activity related to sensory and sensorimotor functions, including response preparation, execution, and inhibition. EEG was recorded while 10 young and 10 elderly persons performed a visual evoked potential (VEP), a cued stimulus response (S-R), and a cued visual Go&#47;NoGo task. Early event-related synchronization (ERS, 0&#8211;250 ms) and late event-related desynchronization (ERD, 200&#8211;600 ms) of single-trial lower and upper alpha was analyzed using poststimulus amplitude enhancement and intertrial phase coherence measures. The results show comparable modulations of lower (8&#8211;10 Hz) and upper (10&#8211;15 Hz) alpha activity in young and elderly related to the sensory and different forms of motor response processing. Specifically, reduced early lower alpha ERS as well as late upper alpha ERD at central locations characterized response inhibition processing in both age groups. We discuss the counterintuitive hypothesis that reduced efficacy of some basal neural inhibitory mechanisms enables older observers to perform better than or comparable to younger observers on some visual tasks, and conclude that alterations in alpha oscillatory networks with age may depend on the stimuli applied.

Coding of visual object features and feature conjunctions in the human brain

Object recognition is achieved through neural mechanisms reliant on the activity of distributed coordinated neural assemblies. In the initial steps of this process, an object's features are thought to be coded very rapidly in distinct neural assemblies. These features play different functional roles in the recognition process--while colour facilitates recognition, additional contours and edges delay it. Here, we selectively varied the amount and role of object features in an entry-level categorization paradigm and related them to the electrical activity of the human brain. We found that early synchronizations (approx. 100 ms) increased quantitatively when more image features had to be coded, without reflecting their qualitative contribution to the recognition process. Later activity (approx. 200-400 ms) was modulated by the representational role of object features. These findings demonstrate that although early synchronizations may be sufficient for relatively crude discrimination of objects in visual scenes, they cannot support entry-level categorization. This was subserved by later processes of object model selection, which utilized the representational value of object features such as colour or edges to select the appropriate model and achieve identification.

Alpha phase coupling reflects object recognition

In the present study, we investigate the role of upper alpha oscillations for semantic access and retrieval processes. In each of a series of trials, subjects were presented trains of distorted pictures (with decreasing levels of degradation), and were asked to respond as quickly as possible when they recognize the meaning of the picture. The results show that during the time-window of picture recognition, upper alpha power decreased but inter-areal phase synchronization increased as compared to meaningless control pictures. We assume that synchronous alpha oscillations--particularly during a decrease in alpha power--reflect topographically specific neural network activity that is related to the access of semantic information in LTM.

Anticipation of natural stimuli modulates EEG dynamics: physiology and simulation

In everyday life we often encounter situations in which we can expect a visual stimulus before we actually see it. Here, we study the impact of such stimulus anticipation on the actual response to a visual stimulus. Participants were to indicate the sex of deer and cattle on photographs of the respective animals. On some trials, participants were cued on the species of the upcoming animal whereas on other trials this was not the case. Time frequency analysis of the simultaneously recorded EEG revealed modulations by this cue stimulus in two time windows. Early [Formula: see text] spectral responses [Formula: see text] displayed strongest stimulus-locking for stimuli that were preceded by a cue if they were sufficiently large. Late [Formula: see text] responses displayed enhanced amplitudes in response to large stimuli and to stimuli that were preceded by a cue. For late responses, however, no interaction between cue and stimulus size was observed. We were able to explain these results in a simulation by prestimulus gain modulations (early response) and by decreased response thresholds (late response). Thus, it seems plausible, that stimulus anticipation results in a pretuning of local neural populations.

Human EEG very high frequency oscillations reflect the number of matches with a template in auditory short-term memory

Auditory perception comprises bottom-up as well as top-down processes. While research in the past has revealed many neural correlates of bottom-up processes, less is known about top-down modulation. Memory processes have recently been associated with oscillations in the gamma-band of human EEG (30 Hz and above) which are enhanced when incoming information matches a stored memory template. Therefore, we investigated event-related potentials (ERPs) and gamma-band activity in 17 healthy participants in a Go/NoGo-task. They listened to four frequency-modulated (FM) sounds which varied regarding the frequency range traversed and the direction of frequency modulation. One sound was defined as target and required a button press. The results of ERPs (N1, P2, N2, and P3) were consistent with previous studies. Analysis of evoked gamma-band responses yielded no significant task-dependent modulation, but we observed a stimulus dependency, which was also present in a control experiment: The amplitude of evoked gamma responses showed an inverted U-shape as a function of stimulus frequency. Investigation of total gamma activity revealed functionally relevant responses at high frequencies (90 Hz to 250 Hz), which showed significant modulations by matches with STM: Complete matches led to the strongest enhancements (starting around 100 ms after stimulus onset) and partial matches resulted in intermediate ones. The results support the conclusion that very high frequency oscillations (VHFOs) are markers of active stimulus discrimination in STM matching processes and are attributable to higher cognitive functions.
