Heavy metal concentrations and arsenic speciation in animal manure composts in China

A comprehensive review on agricultural waste utilization through sustainable conversion techniques, with a focus on the additives effect on the fate of phosphorus and toxic elements during composting process

The increasing trend of using agricultural wastes follows the concept of "waste to wealth" and is closely related to the themes of sustainable development goals (SDGs). Carbon-neutral technologies for waste management have not been critically reviewed yet. This paper reviews the technological trend of agricultural waste utilization, including composting, thermal conversion, and anaerobic digestion. Specifically, the effects of exogenous additives on the contents, fractionation, and fate of phosphorus (P) and potentially toxic elements (PTEs) during the composting process have been comprehensively reviewed in this article. The composting process can transform biomass-P and additive-born P into plant available forms. PTEs can be passivated during the composting process. Biochar can accelerate the passivation of PTEs in the composting process through different physiochemical interactions such as surface adsorption, precipitation, and cation exchange reactions. The addition of exogenous calcium, magnesium and phosphate in the compost can reduce the mobility of PTEs such as copper, cadmium, and zinc. Based on critical analysis, this paper recommends an eco-innovative perspective for the improvement and practical application of composting technology for the utilization of agricultural biowastes to meet the circular economy approach and achieve the SDGs.

A thorough investigation into the adsorption behavior of sophorolipid-modified fly ash towards compound pollution of lead and tetracycline

Heavy metal ions and antibiotics were simultaneously detected in authentic water systems. This research, for the first time, employed synthesized sophorolipid-modified fly ash(SFA) to eliminate tetracycline(TC) and lead(Pb2+) from wastewater. Various characterization techniques, including SEM-EDS, FTIR, XPS, BET, and Zeta, were employed to investigate the properties of the SFA. The results showed that the sophorolipid modification significantly improved the fly ash's adsorption capacities for the target pollutants. The static adsorption experiments elucidated the adsorption behaviors of SFA towards TC and Pb2+ in single and binary systems, highlighting the effects of different Environmental factors on the adsorption behavior in both types of systems. In single systems, SFA exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 128.96 mg/g for Pb2+ and 55.57 mg/g for TC. The adsorption of Pb2+ and TC followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and Freundlich isotherm models. The adsorption reactions are endothermic and occur spontaneously. SFA demonstrates varying adsorption mechanisms for two different types of pollutants. In the case of Pb2+, the primary mechanisms include ion exchange, electrostatic interaction, cation-π interaction, and complexation, while TC primarily engages in hydrogen bonding, π-π interaction, and complexation. The interaction between Pb2+ and TC has been shown to improve adsorption efficiency at low concentrations. Additionally, adsorption-desorption experiments confirm the reliable cycling performance of modified fly ash, highlighting its potential as a cost-effective and efficient adsorbent for antibiotics and heavy metals.

Effect of thermal treatment of illite on the bioavailability of copper and zinc in the aerobic composting of pig manure with corn straw

The large amount of various types of heavy metals in animal manure applied to agricultural field has caused severe threat to the ecosystems of soil environments. In this study, the effect of thermal treatment of illite on the bioavailability of copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) in the aerobic composting of pig manure with corn straw biochar was investigated. The objectives of this study were to characterize the variations in the bioavailability of Cu and Zn in the aerobic composting of pig manure added with illite treated with high temperatures and to identify the relatively dominant microbes involved in the formation of humus and passivation of heavy metals in pig manure composting based on 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing analysis. The results showed that in comparison with the raw materials of pig manure, the bioavailability of Zn and Cu in the control and three experimental composting groups, i.e., group I (with untreated illite), group I-2 (with illite treated under 200°C), and group I-5 (with illite treated under 500°C), was decreased by 27.66 and 71.54%, 47.05 and 79.80%, 51.56 and 81.93%, and 58.15 and 86.60%, respectively. The results of 16S rRNA sequencing analysis revealed that in the I-5 group, the highest relative abundance was detected in Fermentimonas, which was associated with the degradation of glucose and fructose, and the increased relative abundances were revealed in the microbes associated with the formation of humus, which chelated with Zn and Cu to ultimately reduce the bioavailability of heavy metals and their biotoxicity in the compost. This study provided strong experimental evidence to support the application of illite in pig manure composting and novel insights into the selection of appropriate additives (i.e., illite) to promote humification and passivation of different heavy metals in pig manure composting.

Effect of fertilization on the accumulation and health risk for heavy metals in native Andean potatoes in the highlands of Perú

Soil infertility is a global problem, amendments such as organic fertilizers and mineral fertilizers are used to improve crop yields. However, these fertilizers contain heavy metals as well as essential mineral elements. The objective of the study was to determine the effect of organic and inorganic fertilizer on the accumulation and health risk of heavy metals in tubers. The plants were cultivated at an altitude of 3970 m using four treatments (poultry manure, alpaca manure, island guano and inorganic fertilizer) and a control group. Soil contamination levels and the degree of metal accumulation in the tubers were also determined. As a result, it was found that the use of inorganic fertilizer and poultry manure increased the values of Cu and Zn in soils, exceeding the recommended standards. The accumulation of heavy metals in potato tubers did not exceed the maximum recommended limits with the exception of Pb, which exceeded the limit allowed by the FAO/WHO (0.1 mg kg-1). Poultry manure contributed to the highest accumulation of Zn, Cu and Pb in tubers with 11.62±1.30, 3.48±0.20 and 0.12 ±0.02 mg kg-1 respectively. The transfer of metals from the soil to the tubers was less than 1. Individual and total non-carcinogenic risk values were less than 1, indicating a safe level of consumption for children and adults. The cancer risk was found to be within an acceptable range. However, poultry manure and inorganic fertilizer treatments had the highest total cancer risk values in both age groups, suggesting a long-term carcinogenic risk.

Physico-chemical assessment of on-farm bioconversion of organic waste in dairy farms in context to sustainability and circular bioeconomy

On a milk-producing dairy farm, milk production is correlated with manure production and the number of cattle, and manure is widely used as a soil fertilizer. However, excessive dairy manure production is linked with greenhouse gas emissions and water quality issues. On-farm planning of manure storage and application to enhance soil nutrients are essential in a circular economy to reduce environmental impact, where manure is not landfilled and incinerated. Instead, it creates a nutrient resource for crops and soil. Dairy manure, which is rich in nutrients, is a valuable fertilizer that contains many nutrients such as nitrogen (N), organic matter (OM), phosphorous (P), Potassium (K) and micronutrients. In this work, a pilot field research was conducted between 2016 and 2018 in various parts of California, USA (San Joaquin Valley, Sacramento Valley, Shasta Cascade, and the North Coast of California) to assess physio-chemical characteristics of solid fractions of dairy manure among various dairy farms. A total of 156 samples were collected from the gut (n = 107) and toe (n = 49) of the manure piles across California for determining total solid (TS), volatile solid (VS), temperature, moisture content and carbon-nitrogen ratio (C: N). Here, using the observations of field study and analysis, we show that C: N, OM and MC of solid fractions of dairy manure vary significantly among dairy farms. The average C: N ratio of manure (26-32) among various regions was close to an ideal C: N value of 24:1 for soil microbes to stimulate nutrient release to crops. Manure pH ranged between 7.0 and 8.0, which was close to an optimal pH range for common crops (6.0-8.0). Moreover, considering less cost and surplus availability, manure will likely continue providing a cost-effective organic fertilizer resource compared to commercial chemical fertilizers.

Hydrochar drives reduction in bioavailability of heavy metals during composting via promoting humification and microbial community evolution

This study presented the effects of hydrochar on humification, heavy metals (HMs) bioavailability and bacterial community succession during composting. Results indicated that hydrochar addition led to elevated composting temperature, 7.3% increase in humic acid (HA), and 52.9% increase in ratio of humic acid to fulvic acid. The diethylene triamine pentacetic acid extractable Zn, Cu, Pb, and Ni were reduced by 19.2%, 36.3%, 37.8%, and 27.1%, respectively, in hydrochar-involved composting system. Furthermore, main mechanisms driving the reduced HMs bioavailability by hydrochar addition were revealed. The addition of hydrochar significantly modified the microbial community structure. Correlation analysis and microbial analysis demonstrated that relative abundance of bacterial groups connected with humification and HMs passivation were increased. Consequently, the HA formation was promoted and the HMs bioavailability were reduced through bacterial bioremediation and HA complexation. This study demonstrates the addition of hydrochar as a promising strategy to mitigate the HMs bioavailability during composting.

Organic fertilizer type and dose affect growth, morphological and physiological parameters, and mineral nutrition of watermelon seedlings

Background

Organic agriculture has grown rapidly in recent years due to its environmental friendliness, sustainability, and improved farm profitability. Transplants are commonly used for fruits and vegetables to achieve consistent quality, uniformity, and easy field spacing control. The efficacy and optimal amounts of fertilizers for organic transplant production need to be investigated.

Methods

The effects of three organic fertilizers (Sustane 4-6-4, Nature Safe 7-7-7, and Dramatic 2-4-1) and one conventional fertilizer Peters Professional 20-20-20 (Conventional) with four doses (nitrogen (N) content was matched among fertilizers in each level, as 0.14 g/L, 0.28 g/L, 0.56 g/L, and 0.84 g/L N, respectively) on watermelon seedlings were compared in this study.

Results

The results showed that all organic fertilizer treatments were not significantly different from the Conventional group in terms of watermelon germination. The only exception was the highest dose of Sustane 4-6-4 (0.84 g/L N) which decreased the germination rate and relative emergence index. Generally, growth index, shoot fresh and dry weights, true leaf number, and stem diameter increased as the amount of N increased within each fertilizer type. The best shoot growth was observed in the highest doses of Conventional and Dramatic 2-4-1 treatments (0.84 g/L N). However, Dramatic 2-4-1 treatments resulted in the lowest root growth when compared to other fertilizers at the same N dose. The second highest fertilization dose (0.56 g/L N) of Sustane 4-6-4 had the best root growth according to root fresh weight, root volume, root area, total root length, as well as the numbers of root tip and crossing when compared to other treatments. For seedlings, a well-developed root system can ensure a good seedling establishment and high survival rate under stressful field conditions after transplanting. Thus, Sustane 4-6-4 at 14 g/L (0.56 g/L N) is recommended to produce high-quality organic watermelon seedlings among the treatments applied in this study.

Relationships between arsenic biotransformation genes, antibiotic resistance genes, and microbial function under different arsenic stresses during composting

Although the arsenic contamination and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during composting have been studied separately, there is limited information on their interactions, particularly, the relationship between arsenic biotransformation genes (ABGs) and ARGs. Therefore, the present study used different forms of arsenic stress (organic and inorganic arsenic at 10 and 50 mg/kg) in pig manure and straw co-composting, to evaluate the effects of arsenic stress on microbial community structures, metabolic function, ABGs, and ARGs. The results showed that arsenic stress had different effects on different parameters and promoted the microbial formation of humic acid and the biodegradation of fulvic acid. Inorganic arsenic showed more rapid effects on microbial community structure, visible within about 20 days, while the effects of organic arsenic were later (about 45 days) due to the necessity of transformation. Moreover, the addition of organic roxarsone and inorganic arsenic resulted in higher expression of ABGs and ARGs, respectively. Arsenic addition also caused increased expression of genes associated with replication and repair. A significant relationship was observed between ABG and ARG expression, for instance, genes involved in arsenic reduction and oxidation were influenced by genes involved in aminoglycoside and chloramphenicol resistance genes (p < 0.05). These complex interactions among microorganisms, functional genes, and external parameters contribute to the understanding of the mechanisms underlying cross-contamination.

Livestock wastes from family-operated farms are potential important sources of potentially toxic elements, antibiotics, and estrogens in rural areas in North China

The open-air storage and disposal of livestock waste from family-operated livestock farms can be a potential health threat to rural residents. In this study, the occurrence and seasonal distribution of 8 potentially toxic elements, 24 antibiotics, and 4 estrogens were investigated in 44 waste samples from 11 rural farms in North China. The results showed that these micropollutants were ubiquitous in livestock waste, with concentration ranges of 238.9-4555 mg/kg for potentially toxic elements, not detected (ND) to 286,672 μg/kg for antibiotics and ND to 229.5 μg/kg for estrogens. The pollutants in animal wastes showed seasonal variation. Since these wastes are directly applicable to nearby farmland without treatment, the risks those wastes pose to farmland soils were also evaluated. Risk assessment results showed that Zn, Cd, Hg, FF and DC in swine manures were at high risk, while total estrogens in chicken and dairy cattle manures were at high risk. The results will provide important data for the regulation of animal wastes produced by small-scale livestock farms in rural areas of China.

Effects of biochar combined with MgO desulfurization waste residue on nitrogen conversion and odor emission in chicken manure composting

Aim: Chicken manure is known to produce strong odors during aerobic composting, which not only pollutes the surrounding environment but also leads to the loss of valuable nutrients like nitrogen and sulfur, thus reducing the quality of the fertilizer. Methods: In this study, we explored the use of biochar combined with MgO desulfurization waste residue (MDWR) as a novel composting additive. Our approach involved conducting composting tests, characterizing the compost samples, conducting pot experiments, and examining the impact of the additives on nitrogen retention, deodorization, and compost quality. Results: Our findings revealed that the addition of biochar and MDWR significantly reduced ammonia volatilization in chicken manure compost, demonstrating a reduction rate of up to 60.12%. Additionally, the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from chicken manure compost treated with biochar and MDWR decreased by 44.63% compared to the control group. Conclusions: The composting product treated with both biochar and MDWR (CMB) exhibited a 67.7% increase in total nitrogen (TN) compared to the blank control group, surpassing the other treatment groups and showcasing the synergistic effect of these two additives on nitrogen retention. Moreover, the CMB treatment facilitated the formation of struvite crystals. Furthermore, our pot experiment results demonstrated that the CMB treatment enhanced vegetable yield and quality while reducing nitrate content. These findings highlight the significant impact of MDWR on nitrogen retention, deodorization, and compost quality enhancement, thereby indicating its promising application prospects.

Integrative risk assessment method via combining geostatistical analysis, random forest, and receptor models for potentially toxic elements in selenium-rich soil

Revealing the spatial features and source of associated potentially toxic elements (PTEs) is crucial for the safe use of selenium (Se)-rich soils. An integrative risk assessment (GRRRA) approach based on geostatistical analysis (GA), random forest (RF), and receptor models (RMs) was first established to investigate the spatial distribution, sources, and potential ecological risks (PER) of PTEs in 982 soils from Ziyang City, a typical natural Se-rich area in China. RF combined with multiple RMs supported the source apportionment derived from the RMs and provided accurate results for source identification. Then, quantified source contributions were introduced into the risk assessment. Eighty-three percent of the samples contain Cd at a high PER level in local Se-rich soils. GA based on spatial interpolation and spatial autocorrelation showed that soil PTEs have distinct spatial characteristics, and high values are primarily distributed in this research areas. Absolute principal component score/multiple line regression (APCS/MLR) is more suitable than positive matrix factorization (PMF) for source apportionment in this study. RF combined with RMs more accurately and scientifically extracted four sources of soil PTEs: parent material (48.91%), mining (17.93%), agriculture (8.54%), and atmospheric deposition (24.63%). Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) demonstrates a 47.73% probability of a non-negligible risk (RI > 150) caused by parent material and 3.6% from industrial sources, respectively. Parent material (64.20%, RI = 229.56) and mining (16.49%, RI = 58.96) sources contribute to the highest PER of PTEs. In conclusion, the GRRRA method can comprehensively analyze the distribution and sources of soil PTEs and effectively quantify the source contribution to PER, thus providing the theoretical foundation for the secure utilization of Se-rich soils and environmental management and decision making.

Valorization of biowastes for clean energy production, environmental depollution and soil fertility

The mother earth is a source of natural resources that, in conjunction with anthropogenic activities, generates a wide spectrum of different biowastes. These biomaterials can be used as low-cost raw feedstock to produce bioenergy, value-added products, and other commodities. However, the improper management and disposal of these biowastes can generate relevant environmental impacts. Consequently, it is imperative to explore alternative technologies for the valorization and exploitation of these wastes to obtain benefits for the society. This review covers different aspects related to valorization of biowastes and their applications in water pollution, soil fertility and green energy generation. The classification and characteristics of different biowastes (biosolids, animal wastes and effluents, plant biomass, wood and green wastes) including their main generation sources are discussed. Different technologies (e.g., pyrolysis, hydrothermal carbonization, anaerobic digestion, gasification, biodrying) for the transformation and valorization of these residues are also analyzed. The application of biowastes in soil fertility, environmental pollution and energy production are described and illustrative examples are provided. Finally, the challenges related to implement low-cost and sustainable biowaste management strategies are highlighted. It was concluded that reliable simulation studies are required to optimize all the logistic stages of management chain of these residues considering the constraints generated from the economic, environmental and social aspects of the biowaste generation sources and their locations. The recollection and sorting of biowastes are key parameters to minimize the costs associated to their management and valorization. Also, the concepts of Industry 4.0 can contribute to achieve a successful commercial production of the value-added products obtained from the biowaste valorization. Overall, this review provides a general outlook of biowaste management and its valorization in the current context of circular economy.

Effects of Disinfectants on Larval Growth and Gut Microbial Communities of Black Soldier Fly Larvae

The use of the black soldier fly has been demonstrated to be effective in the treatment of swine manure. Since the outbreaks of ASFV, prevention procedures, including manure disinfection, have changed dramatically. Glutaraldehyde (GA) and potassium peroxymonosulfate (PPMS) have been shown to be effective in the prevention of this pathogen and are thus widely used in the disinfection of swine manures, etc. However, research on the effects of disinfectants in manures on the growth of BSFL and gut microbiota is scarce. The goal of this study was to determine the effects of GA and PPMS on BSFL growth, manure reduction, and gut microbiota. In triplicate, 100 larvae were inoculated in 100 g of each type of manure compound (manure containing 1% GA treatment (GT1), manure containing 0.5% GA treatment (GT2), manure containing 1% PPMS treatment (PT1), manure containing 0.5% PPMS treatment (PT2), and manure without disinfectant (control)). After calculating the larval weight and waste reduction, the larval gut was extracted and used to determine the microbial composition. According to the results, the dry weights of the larvae fed PT1-2 (PT1: 86.7 ± 4.2 mg and PT2: 85.3 ± 1.3 mg) were significantly higher than those of the larvae fed GT1-2 (GT1: 72.5 ± 2.1 mg and GT2: 70 ± 2.8 mg) and the control (64.2 ± 5.8 mg). There was a 2.8-4.03% higher waste reduction in PT1-2 than in the control, and the waste reduction in GT1-2 was 7.17-7.87% lower than that in the control. In a gut microbiota analysis, two new genera (Fluviicola and Fusobacterium) were discovered in PT1-2 when compared to GT1-2 and the control. Furthermore, the disinfectants did not reduce the diversity of the microbial community; rather, Shannon indices revealed that the diversities of GT1-2 (GT1: 1.924 ± 0.015; GT2: 1.944 ± 0.016) and PT1 (1.861 ± 0.016) were higher than those of the control (1.738 ± 0.015). Finally, it was found that both disinfectants in swine manures at concentrations of 1% and 0.5% may be beneficial to the complexity and cooperation of BSFL gut microbiota, according to an analysis of microbial interactions.

Risk of Heavy Metal Poisoning From Consuming Grasscutter Digesta in Ghana

Grasscutter (cane rat/Thryonomys swinderianus) digesta is used as a spice in Ghana. Research shows that heavy metals from the environment may accumulate in the internal organs of grasscutters, which raises concerns about the possible contamination of grasscutter digesta, too, with heavy metals. Although grasscutter meat in Ghana has been described as safe for consumption, information is lacking on the health risks associated with ingesting the digesta. This study, therefore, aimed to assess the knowledge and perceptions of a merchant and a consumer about the safety of ingesting grasscutter digesta and to evaluate potential health risks from exposure to heavy metals from the spice. A total of 12 digesta samples were analyzed to evaluate potential health risks from exposure to Cd, Fe, Hg, and Mn using a Varian AA240FS Atomic Absorption Spectrometer. The levels of Cd, Hg, and Mn were below the detection limit of 0.01 mg/kg digesta. Also, the estimated daily intake of Fe (0.02 mg/kg) was less than the maximum allowable dose recommended by the US EPA (0.7 mg/kg). The hazard indices of Fe for daily and weekly consumption were <1, suggesting that the consumers may be safe from iron poisoning. Because grasscutter digesta is a relatively expensive spice, it is unlikely to be consumed daily by the average Ghanaian. Moreover, if 10 g of digesta is consumed daily, it can be safely ingested about 971 times in a month. Domestication of grasscutters may be a useful approach to monitor their diet and consequently the quality of their digesta.

Migration and Transformation of Cd in Pig Manure-Insect Frass (Hermetia illucens)-Soil-Maize System

Little is known about the fate of heavy metals in the recycling system of animal manure-black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) transformation-larval frass application. In this work, BSFL-transformed pig manure with different concentrations of exogenous cadmium (Cd) (0, 3, 15, 30 mg kg^-1), and the obtained BSFL frass fertilizer were further used in pot experiments of maize planting to explore Cd migration during the whole recycling system. Results showed that Cd addition to pig manure had no significant effects on BSFL growth or BSFL transformation performance. The Cd concentrations in BSFL frass were 10.9-19.8% lower than those in pig manure, while those in BSFL bodies were 2.3-4.0-times those of pig manure. For maize planting, only 30 mg kg^-1 of Cd treatment significantly inhibited maize growth. The BSFL frass application (under exogenous Cd treatment) enhanced Cd contents in the aboveground and underground parts of maize (3.3-57.6-times) and those in soil (0.5-1.7-times) compared with CK (no Cd addition). Additionally, 61.2-73.5% of pig manure-sourced Cd was transformed into BSFL frass and the rest entered BSFL bodies. Only a small part (0.31-1.34%) of manure-sourced Cd entered maize plants. BSFL transformation decreased the proportions of weak acid-dissolved Cd from 44.2-53.0% (manure) to 37.3-46.0% (frass). After frass application, the proportions of weak acid-dissolved Cd in soil were further decreased to 17.8-42.5%, while the residual fractions of Cd increased to 27.2-67.7%. The findings provided a theoretical basis for the rational application of BSFL frass fertilizers sourced from heavy-metal-contaminated manure.

Multi-geostatistical analyses of the spatial distribution and source apportionment of potentially toxic elements in urban children's park soils in Pakistan: A risk assessment study

In the past few decades, contamination of urban children's parks (UCPs) with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) has been attracting more and more interest; however, assessment of eco-environmental and child exposure risks particularly in developing countries remains limited. The current study investigated PTE (Cr, Ni, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb) concentrations, potential sources, and their health risk assessment in UCP soils of 12 major cities in Pakistan. The results showed that the mean concentration of Ni exceeded the SEPA-permissible limit in all UCP sites, while other PTEs were found to be within acceptable limits. The soil properties such as pH, electrical conductivity, organic matter, and soil particles size were determined in UCPs soils. The contamination factor and pollution load index results indicated low to moderate pollution levels (CF < 3) and (PLI<1) for all PTEs except Ni in some of the selected cities. Quantile-quantile (Q-Q) plotting determined the normal distribution line for all PTEs in the UCPs. Principal component analysis showed the mixed sources of contamination from industrial emissions, fossil fuel combustion, vehicular emissions, wastewater irrigation, as well as solid waste disposal and natural sources of soil parent materials in all park sites. ANOVA results showed that all the PTEs except Cd had moderate to higher contamination values than the reference site. The risk assessment study revealed that children had high exposure to the selected PTEs via all exposure pathways. The hazard index (HI) mean value (1.82E+00) of Ni for all exposure pathways was greater than 1, while total risk value of Cr (1.00E-03) had exceeded USEPA limit, indicating cancer risk. Consequently, the study of UCPs soils revealed PTEs contamination that could pose a potential health risk to the local population in the studied UCPs regions of Pakistan. Thus, the present study recommends that the influx of PTEs originating from natural and anthropogenic sources should be mitigated and government should implement strict enforcement of environmental regulations and proper management, as well as air quality monitoring guidelines for public health should be strictly adopted to reduce traffic- and industrial emission-related to PTEs in metropolitan areas.

Arsenic contribution of poultry manure towards soils and food plants contamination and associated cancer risk in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan

Exposure to high level of arsenic (As) through the ingestion of contaminated soil, dust and food plants can pose health risk to humans. This study investigates the total arsenic (As), arsenobetaine (AsB), monomethylarsenate (MMA), dimethylarsenate (DMA), arsenite (As³⁺) and arsenate (As⁵⁺) concentrations in poultry feed, manure, agricultural soils and food plants collected from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan. The total mean As concentrations in the edible parts of food plants ranged from 0.096 mg kg^-1 to 1.25 mg kg^-1 with percentile (P) values (P25-0.039, P50-0.0765, P75-0.165 1 mg kg^-1 to P25-0.95, P50-1.23, P75-1.6 1 mg kg^-1) and exceeded the food safety limit (0.1 mg kg^-1) of Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO) in all plant species except Pisum sativum (pea) and Mentha arvensis (mint). The risk to human health was assessed through the average daily intake (ADI), hazards quotient (HQ), health risk index (HRI) and lifetime cancer risk (LTCR). The highest average daily intake of As via the ingestion of Malva neglecta (mallow, a leafy plant) was observed for adults and children. The ADI for adults and children (2.36 × 10^-4 mg kg^-1 day^-1 and 6.33 × 10^-4 mg kg^-1 day^-1) was about 13% and 5%, respectively, of the Bench Mark Dose Limit (BMDL_0.5) of 3.00 × 10^-3 mg kg^-1 day^-1 set by WHO. The HRI was 3 times more in the children (2.1) than the adults (0.79), posing non-cancer health risks (health risk index > 1) for children. The LTCR values were slightly higher (1.53 × 10^-4) relative to USEPA and WHO limits (1 × 10^-6 to 1 × 10^-4) for children whereas a minimal cancer risk was observed for adults via consumption of selected food plants. The results showed that poultry manure can contaminate food plants that may lead to cancer and non-cancer risks in agricultural areas, Pakistan. Thus, it is important to minimize As concentration in poultry feed to safeguard human health and environment from adverse effects.

Fe2(SO4)3-assisted anaerobic digestion of pig manure: the performance of biogas yield and heavy metal passivation

Abstract

The harmless disposal and recycling treatment technology of livestock manure has received increasing attention in recent years. In this study, Fe2(SO4)3 was added during anaerobic digestion (AD) of pig manure (PM) to investigate the effects of different doses of Fe2(SO4)3 on biogas yield and heavy metal passivation. The results showed that the highest biogas yield was observed after adding a moderate dose of Fe2(SO4)3 (3%, based on the total solids), while the elevated result was inhibited as the Fe2(SO4)3 dosage increased. The analysis of solid digestate (solid matter remaining after AD) revealed that AD effectively passivated Cu, Zn, and As, which can be further improved with the addition of Fe2(SO4)3. However, the passivated Cd performance during this process was negligible. Furthermore, seed germination index (GI) trial results indicated that Fe2(SO4)3-assisted AD reduced the toxicity of end products to plants. To summarize, AD assisted by the addition of an appropriate amount of Fe2(SO4)3 is feasible to treat PM, and the addition of Fe2(SO4)3 at 3% was the most economic and environmental-friendly. This work could provide useful methods for the control of heavy metal pollution in the soil.

Distribution of quinolone and macrolide resistance genes and their co-occurrence with heavy metal resistance genes in vegetable soils with long-term application of manure

The spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) has become an increasingly serious global public health issue. This study investigated the distribution characteristics and influencing factors of ARB and ARGs in greenhouse vegetable soils with long-term application of manure. Five typical ARGs, four heavy metal resistance genes (MRGs), and two mobile genetic elements (MGEs) were quantified by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). The amount of ARB in manure-improved soil greatly exceeded that in control soil, and the bacterial resistance rate decreased significantly with increases in antibiotic concentrations. In addition, the resistance rate of ARB to enrofloxacin (ENR) was lower than that of tylosin (TYL). Real-time qPCR results showed that long-term application of manure enhanced the relative abundance of ARGs in vegetable soils, and the content and proportion of quinolone resistance genes were higher than those of macrolide resistance genes. Redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that qepA and qnrS significantly correlated with total and available amounts of Cu and Zn, highlighting that certain heavy metals can influence persistence of ARGs. Integrase gene intI1 correlated significantly with the relative abundance of qepA, qnrS, and ermF, suggesting that intI1 played an important role in the horizontal transfer of ARGs. Furthermore, there was a weakly but not significantly positive correlation between specific detected MRGs and ARGs and MGEs. The results of this study enhance understanding the potential for increasing ARGs in manure-applied soil, assessing ecological risk and reducing the spread of ARGs.

Effect of superphosphate addition on heavy metals speciation and microbial communities during composting

Superphosphate fertilizer (SSP) as an additive can reduce the nitrogen loss and increase available phosphorus in composting but few studies investigated the effect of SSP addition on heavy metal and microbial communities. In this study, different ratios (10%, 18%, 26%) of SSP were added into pig manure composting to assess the changes of heavy metal (Cu, Mn, As, Zn, and Fe) fractions, bacterial and fungal communities as well as their interactions. SSP addition at 18% had lower ecological risk but still increased the bioavailability of Cu, Mn, and Fe in composts compared to control. Adding 18% SSP into compost decreased bacterial number and increased the fungal diversity compared to CK. Redundancy analysis indicated heavy metal fractions correlated significantly with bacterial and fungal community compositions in composting with 18% SSP. Network analysis showed adding 18% SSP increased microbial interaction and positive cooperation especially enhanced the proportion of Proteobacteria and Ascomycota.

Ecotoxicological effects of untreated pig manure from diets with or without growth-promoting supplements on Eisenia andrei in subtropical soils

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of untreated pig manure from diets incorporating growth-promoting supplements (antibiotics and Zn oxide) on the survival and reproduction of Eisenia andrei earthworms. The tested manures were obtained from four different groups of pigs fed with four different diets: CS, a diet based on corn and soymeal; TR, a diet based on corn, soymeal, and ground wheat (15%); CSa, a diet based on corn and soymeal + 100 ppm of doxycycline + 50 ppm of colistin + 2500 ppm of Zn oxide; and TRa, a diet based on corn, soymeal, and ground wheat (15%) + 100 ppm of doxycycline + 50 ppm of colistin + 2500 ppm of Zn oxide. The study used two soils representative of the Southern region of Brazil (Oxisol and Entisol). In general, there were no significant differences between the different manures tested in each soil. However, there were differences in the toxicity manure on E. andrei between the soils, and the magnitude of this effect was dependent on the applied dose. In Oxisol, LC₅₀ values were higher than 80 m³ ha^-1, and EC₅₀ varied from 9 to 27 m³ ha^-1. In Entisol, the LC₅₀ values were below the lowest dose tested (< 25 m³ ha^-1), and EC₅₀ remained around 5 m³ ha^-1. It may be possible that the effects observed were attributed to an excess of nitrogen, copper, and zinc, promoted by the addition of the untreated manure and how these factors interacted with soil type.

Review on fate and bioavailability of heavy metals during anaerobic digestion and composting of animal manure

Anaerobic digestion and composting are attracting increasing attention due to the increased production of animal manure. It is essential to know about the fate and bioavailability of heavy metals (HMs) for further utilisation of animal manure. This review has systematically summarised the migration of HMs and the transformation of several typical HMs (Cu, Zn, Cd, As, and Pb) during anaerobic digestion and composting. The results showed that organic matter degradation increased the HMs content in biogas residue and compost (with the exception of As in compost). HMs migrated into biogas residue during anaerobic digestion through various mechanisms. Most of HMs in biogas residue and compost exceeded relevant standards. Then, anaerobic digestion increased the bioavailable fractions proportion in Zn and Cd, decreased the F4 proportion, and raised them more than moderate environmental risks. As (III) was the main species in the digester, which extremely increased As toxicity. The increase of F3 proportion in Cu and Pb was due to sulphide formation in biogas residue. Whereas, the high humus content in compost greatly increased the F3 proportion in Cu. The F1 proportion in Zn decreased, but the plant availability of Zn in compost did not reduce significantly. Cd and As mainly converted the bioavailable fractions into stable fractions during composting, but As (V) toxicity needs to be concerned. Moreover, additives are only suitable for animal manure treated with slightly HM contaminated. Therefore, it is necessary to combine more comprehensive methods to improve the manure treatment and make product utilisation safer.

Quality assessment, safety evaluation, and microbiome analysis of night-soil compost from Lahaul valley of northwestern Himalaya

The Himalayan dry toilet system prevalent in the northwestern Himalaya is a traditional practice of converting human faeces into a compost-like soil amendment. The current study evaluated night-soil compost (NSC) for agricultural use by assessing the compost quality, safety, and microbiome properties. Based on the fertility and clean indices determined by the fertility and heavy metal parameters, NSC was categorized as good quality compost with high fertilizing potential and moderate concentration of heavy metals. With respect to pathogens, the faecal coliform levels in the NSC were categorized as safe according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards. The bacterial community structure based on 16S rRNA gene amplicons revealed a diverse taxonomy with 14 phyla and 54 genera in NSC. Compared to publicly available 16S rRNA gene amplicon data, NSC exhibited predominant phyla (Proteobacteria, Bacteriodetes, Actinobacteria, and Firmicutes) similar to human faeces, cattle manure, food waste compost, vermicompost, and activated sludge. However, statistically, NSC was distinct at the genus level from all other groups. Additionally, pathogenic bacteria with antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes in the NSC metagenome were determined by performing a standalone BLASTN against the PATRIC database. The analysis revealed 139 pathogenic strains with most pathogens susceptible to antibiotics, indicating lower AMR in the predicted strains. The phytotoxicity of NSC with Pisum sativum var. AS-10 seeds showed a germination index of > 85%, indicating NSC's non-harmful effects on seed germination and root growth. Overall, NSC from Himalayan dry toilets can be used as a soil amendment for food and non-food plants.

Physiological responses of beet and cabbage plants exposed to copper and their potential insertion in human food chain

Copper (Cu) can be toxic to vegetables when it is absorbed and accumulated at large concentrations, a fact that increases the risk of excessive addition of this metal to the human food chain. The aims of the current study are (1) to determine the Cu concentrations that have critical toxic effects on beet and cabbage plants, and the potential of these plants to enter the human food chain, as well as (2) to assess the physiological and biochemical responses of representatives of these vegetables grown in nutrient solution presenting increasing Cu concentrations. Beet and cabbage plants were grown for 75 days in pots filled with sand added with nutrient solution presenting six Cu concentrations: 0.00, 0.52, 1.02, 1.52, 2.02 and 2.52 mg Cu L^-1. Dry matter yield and Cu accumulation in different plant organs were evaluated. Photosynthetic pigment contents, lipid peroxidation levels (TBARs), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) activity and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) concentrations in leaves were evaluated. Critical Cu concentrations that led to toxicity in plant organs such as beetroot and cabbage head, which are often found in human diets, corresponded to 1.43 mg Cu L^-1 and 1.59 mg Cu L^-1, respectively. High Cu concentrations in the nutrient solution have increased Cu concentrations and accumulation in plant tissues. This outcome justified the increased POD and SOD enzyme activity in the leaves of beet and cabbage plants, respectively, and was the cause of reduced plant growth in both crops. Cabbage plants presented higher tolerance to increased Cu levels in the growing environment than beet plants. However, it is necessary being careful at the time to consume both vegetables, when they are grown in Cu-enriched environments.

Trace element accumulation from swine feeds to feces in Chinese swine farms: Implication for element limits

Trace elements like copper and zinc are supplemented in swine feeds to suppress bacteria and/or promote growth. Due to low absorption rates, trace elements are highly concentrated in swine feces, posing a risk to soil and human health if applied to agricultural fields. In the present study, the concentrations of six trace elements (Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb, and Cr) in pig feed and feces were evaluated by sample analysis and data from the literature. The feed-to-feces and feces-to-compost enrichment factors of the trace elements were determined to back-calculate safe concentrations in feed needed to meet permissible trace element concentrations in organic fertilizers. The Cu and Zn concentrations in feeds were the highest, being statistically significantly higher in starter pig feeds than in grower-finisher feeds. Copper exceeded feed limits mainly in the feeds of finisher pigs and sows, while exceedance for Zn occurred in almost all feed samples. Concentrations above the limits were also observed for Pb and Cr impurities in mineral feed supplements. The highest Cu and Zn concentrations in feces were observed for starter pigs. Moreover, significant enrichment of trace elements from feeds to feces was found, with enrichment factors calculated as: 4.68-6.11 for Cu, 3.43-4.60 for Zn, 2.30-3.12 for As, 2.89-4.63 for Cd, 2.45-5.00 for Pb, and 3.32-5.00 for Cr. On this basis, the recommended calculated limits for Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb, and Cr in feeds for different ages of pigs were 41-53, 130-175, 2-3, 0.3-0.5, 5-10, and 15-23 mg/kg, respectively. Priority index calculations and the calculated recommended limits indicated that Cu in starter pig feeds and Cd in starter and breeding pig feeds should be prioritized for reduction to enable feces compost to be utilized safely in agricultural land amendment. Municipal solid waste management: Dynamics, risk assessment, ecological influence, advancements, constraints and perspectives

Global energy consumption has been increasing in tandem with economic growth, putting pressure on the world's supply of renewable energy sources. Municipal Solid waste (MSW) has been reported contributing immensely to the improvement of a secure environment and renewable sources. Energy scarcity and conventional MSW disposal methods in developing countries lead towards many environmental and economic issues. Scientists have been able to experiment with various waste-to-energy conversion technologies in light of this situation. This communication highlights and reviews WtE technologies to convert MSW and other feedstocks into electricity, hydrogen gas, bioethanol along with other value added products like fertilizer(s), platform chemicals as an environmentally friendly products. This review comprehensively summarized the dynamics, risk assessment, ecological influence, advancements, constraints and perspectives altogether in field of municipal solid waste management and treatment. Stare-of-the-art information on ecological influence and risk assessment in handling and transportation of municipal solid waste has been provided. Advanced trends involved in remediation of emerging pollutants and resources obtained from municipal solid wastes have been uncovered. Lastly, this paper comprises constraints and perspectives for uncovering MSW based circular bioeconomy aspects.

Cosorption of Zn(II) and chlortetracycline onto montmorillonite: pH effects and molecular investigations

Ionic antibiotics and metals generally coexist, and their interaction can affect their sorption behaviors onto soil minerals, therefore determining their environmental hazards. This study investigated the sorption and cosorption of Zn(II) and chlortetracycline (CTC) onto montmorillonite at different solution pH (3-10) using batch experiments and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis. The Langmuir model could reproduce well the sorption isotherms of Zn(II) and CTC. The presence of CTC/Zn(II) could promote the maximum sorption capacity (Q_m) of Zn(II)/CTC, based on site energy distribution (SED) theory. Generally, Zn(II) sorption increased with pH increasing. Comparatively, CTC sorption decreased as pH increased till approximately pH 5.0, then increased continuously with pH increasing. Both CTC and Zn(II) co-existence enhanced their individual sorption in both acidic and neutral environments. The processes behind CTC and Zn(II) sorption mainly included cation exchange and surface complexation. The EXAFS data evidenced that the presence of CTC could alter the species of Zn(II) on montmorillonite via surface complexation at pH 4.5 and 7.5, with Zn-CTC complexes being the predominant species on montmorillonite at pH 7.5. At pH 9.5, Zn(II) may exist onto montmorillonite in precipitated form similar to Zn-Al hydrotalcite-like compound (HTlc) regardless of CTC presence.

Pollution monitoring, risk assessment and target remediation of heavy metals in rice from a five-year investigation in Western Fujian region, China

Recently, rice contamination by heavy metals (HMs) has become a severe problem. Taking the Western Fujian region as an example in this study, a total of 1311 rice samples containing eight HMs were collected from 2015 to 2019, then used to explore their pollution characteristics, health risks, and Spatio-temporal variations, finally derive the target remediation areas of the key pollutants. The results showed that average concentrations of all the HMs had not reached the limits of the National Standards of Food Safety, but pollution indexes of As (0.783) and Cu (0.665) were at accumulation level (>0.6), which posed high pollution risks. Furthermore, locations of higher HMs concentrations coincided with those of higher pollution estimation probabilities. The non-carcinogenic risk (4.150, 2.434) and carcinogenic risk (4.96 × 10^-3, 2.92 × 10^-3) for children and adults cannot be negligible, As and Cd were the largest contributors. Children were more susceptible than adults due to the metal concentrations and rice intake rate. The spatio-temporal changes indicated that a decreasing trend in average concentrations of HMs (except Cr), but As (0.37%-0.88%) contents increased in the west and northeast parts, and so did Cd (1.92%-5.11%) in the central region during monitoring. For the target remediation, particular regions in the western and eastern were used as risky areas of As and Cd, respectively. Our results will provide theoretical support for the pollution management of HMs in rice.

Evaluation of the effects of adding activated carbon at different stages of composting on metal speciation and bacterial community evolution

Information on the passivation of heavy metals (HMs) by environmental factors and microbial communities during activated carbon (AC) composting remains limited. Thus, this study elucidated the dynamic changes in HM fractions during chicken manure composting after AC amendment at different periods (initial period: T1, thermophilic period: T2, cooling period: T3). Compared with the initial stage, organic matter concentrations in the control, T1, T2, and T3 groups decreased by 15.9%, 25.8%, 22.6%, and 19.0%, respectively, at the end of composting. The HM-fractions results showed that the passivation sequence of HMs by AC was the highest for Zn, followed by Cu and Pb. AC addition in T2 significantly affected the bacterial community. Variance partitioning analysis indicated that AC accelerated the passivation effect on Zn and Pb by regulating environmental factors, and on Cu by influencing the microbial community. These results are helpful for understanding the mechanism of HM passivation in AC aerobic composting, and are also conducive to the environmentally friendly treatment of livestock and poultry manure.

Toxicity and physicochemical parameters of composts including distinct residues from agribusiness and slaughterhouse sludge

Composting is useful for treatment of residues from agribusiness, but the potential toxicity of the final compost should be evaluated before its agricultural destination. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physicochemical characteristics and the toxicity of agribusiness residues using onion seeds as bioindicators. All tested treatments were composed by sludge from a swine slaughterhouse and sawdust. Besides the control, which included no additional materials, the other treatments included aviary bedding, rice husk and residue from tobacco industries as structuring materials. After 120 days of composting, for all treatments, the temperature inside the composting piles approached the environmental temperature, the physicochemical parameters indicated that the composts were stabilized and, except for the treatment including tobacco residues, that could be used for agriculture without impairing plant germination. Although the treatments including tobacco residues and rice husk showed evidence of cytotoxicity and genotoxicity at the beginning of the composting period, that was not observed for the treatment including aviary bedding. Such potential toxicity was not observed at the end of composting for any of the tested treatments.

Effects of Application of Pig Manure on the Accumulation of Heavy Metals in Rice

Pig manure (PM) is often highly enriched in heavy metals, such as Cu and Zn, due to the wide use of feed additives. To study the potential risks of heavy metal accumulation in the soil and rice grains by the application of PM and other organic manure, a four-year field experiment was conducted in the suburb of Shanghai, southeast China. The contents of Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd in the soils and rice plants by the treatments of PM and fungal culturing residues (FCR) show a trend of annual increase. Those in the soils and rice by the PM treatment are raised even more significantly. Cu and Zn contents in the soil and rice roots by the PM are significantly higher than those by the non-fertilizer control (CK) during the four years, and Pb and Cd also significantly higher than CK in the latter two years. Heavy metals taken up by the rice plants are mostly retained in the roots. Cu and Zn contents in the rice plants are in the decreasing order of roots > grains > stems > leaves, and Pb and Cd in the order of roots > stems > leaves > grains. Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd contents in the soils by the PM treatment increase by 73%, 32%, 106%, and 127% on annual average, and those in the brown rice by 104%, 98%, 275%, and 199%, respectively. The contents of Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd in the brown rice of the treatments are significantly correlated with those in the soils and rice roots (p < 0.05), suggesting the heavy metals accumulated in the rice grains come from the application of PM and FCR. Though the contents of heavy metals in the brown rice during the four experimental years are still within the safe levels, the risks of their accumulative increments, especially by long-term application of PM, can never be neglected.

The Effect of Manure Application on Arsenic Mobilization and Methylation in Different Paddy Soils

Organic matter plays an important role in controlling arsenic(As) release and transformation in soil, however, little is known about the effect of manure application on As behavior in soils with different As contents. In this study, waterlogged incubations using various As-contaminated paddy soils with manure amendment were conducted to investigate how manure application influence As mobilization and methylation in different paddy soils. The results indicated that manure application increased As release in paddy soils with high As (> 30 mg kg^-1) contents. Moreover, our findings also showed that manure application increased the relative abundance of arsM-harboring Euryacheota and Planctomycetes at the phylum level and arsM-harbouring Methanocellaceae, Anaerolinea and Bellinea at genus level, thereby promoting As methylation. These results provide important insights for the significant variation in As mobilization and methylation in paddy soils amended with manure. Moreover, our results suggest that serious consideration should be given to the manure application in As-contaminated paddy soil.

Seasonal content of heavy metals in the "soil–feed–milk–manure" system in horse husbandry in Kazakhstan

Background and Aim: The quality of food, especially animal-based food, is crucial for human health. However, the quality of milk and other animal products has become an acute cause for concern in Kazakhstan . Technogenic dispersion of heavy metals (HMs) causes adverse effects on living organisms and creates unfavorable conditions for the existence of humans, animals, and plants. The purpose of this study was to analyze the content of several HMs in samples of soil, horse feed (hay, mixed feed, and bran), mare's milk, and manure to assess bioaccumulation and possible adverse effects on the bodies of horses. An additional purpose was to identify areas with acceptable conditions for obtaining environmentally safe horse breeding products in the agricultural zones of the Almaty region, Kazakhstan. Materials and Methods: Samples were obtained from two farms in the Almaty region in 2020 (spring, summer, and autumn). In total, 72 soil samples were analyzed, which were taken from the upper humus horizon to the depth of the arable layer. Eighty-six samples were taken from the feed of horses. Green feed was represented by perennial and annual grasses (alsike clover, Medicago sativa, sweet yellow clover, as well as pea and oat mix). Barley and wheat bran stored in the warehouses of the farm were sampled for the research as feed supplements. The mixed feed comprised components such as maize and sunflower. In addition, 46 samples of mare's milk and 28 samples of horse manure were collected. The HM analysis was performed in the laboratory of the Kazakh-Japanese Innovation Center. The residual amounts of HMs were determined using an absorption spectrometer with a voltammetric analyzer. The content of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and arsenic (As) in all the studied samples of soil, feed, mare's milk, and manure did not exceed the threshold limit values (TLVs), suggesting that the intake of these toxic elements into the human body with food was low. Results: The average Cd concentration was in the range of 0.29-0.31 mg/kg in soil samples and in the range of 0.20-0.27 mg/kg in feed samples. In milk, the Cd concentration varied from 0.01 to 0.02 mg/L and was lower in summer and higher in fall. The total average Cd content in horse manure was 0.1844 mg/kg. The concentration of Pb in soil samples ranged from 1.09 to 1.30 mg/kg with the lowest value in spring and the highest in fall. In the feed, the concentration of Pb varied from 0.14 to 0.76 mg/kg and in milk from 0.03 to 0.15 mg/L. The average concentrations of Hg and As in soil samples averaged 0.022 and 0.019 mg/kg, respectively, and were within the TLVs. Conclusion: In the study areas, the calculated transition rates in the soil–feed–milk–manure system revealed that the greatest transition of HMs was observed for Pb and Cd, and a smaller migration was observed for Hg and As. The tendency of accumulation of trace elements continued in the feed.

Effects of C/N Ratio on Lignocellulose Degradation and Enzyme Activities in Aerobic Composting

Lignocellulosic materials have a complex physicochemical composition and structure that reduces their decomposition rate and hinders the formation of humic substances during composting. Therefore, a composting experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of different C/N ratios on lignocellulose (cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin) degradation and the activities of corresponding enzymes during aerobic composting. The study had five C/N ratios, namely, T1 (C/N ratio of 15), T2 (C/N ratio of 20), T3 (C/N ratio of 25), T4 (C/N ratio of 30) and T5 (C/N ratio of 35). The results showed that treatments T3 and T4 had the highest rate of degradation of cellulose and hemicellulose, while treatment T3 had the highest rate of degradation of lignin. Among the five treatments, treatment T3 enhanced the degradation of the lignocellulose constituents, indicating a degradation rate of 6.86–35.17%, 15.63–44.08% and 31.69–165.60% for cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, respectively. The degradation of cellulose and lignin occurred mainly at the thermophilic and late mesophilic phases of composting, while hemicellulose degradation occurred at the maturation phase. Treatment T3 was the best C/N ratio to stimulate the activities of manganese peroxidase, lignin peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase, which in turn promoted lignocellulose degradation.

Research trend analysis of composting based on Web of Science database

Bibliometric analysis was used in this study for the quantitative evaluation of current research trends on composting. The research articles indexed from the Science Citation Index-Expanded in Web of Science database published from 2000 to 2019 were investigated. The USA, China and Spain were the top three countries considering the number of papers. Amongst the research institutes, CSIC of Spain, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada ranked the top three in total publication amount. Journals that published a significant number of literature regarding topics of composting included Environmental Sciences & Ecology, Agriculture and Engineering. In terms of research content, keywords such as heavy metal, heavy metal and biodegradation appeared frequently. In addition, the analysis of keywords revealed the following research hotspots in future studies: investigation of heavy metal passivator, optimisation of composting conditioner, development of all kinds of microorganisms, rational management of the composting process and improvement of solid waste life cycle assessment. To some extent, it helps to understand the current global status and trends of the related research.

Combined pollution of arsenic and Polymyxin B enhanced arsenic toxicity and enriched ARG abundance in soil and earthworm gut microbiotas

Polymyxin B (PMB) is considered as the last line of antibiotic defense available to humans. The environmental effects of the combined pollution with PMB and heavy metals and their interaction mechanisms are unclear. We explored the effects of the combined pollution with PMB and arsenic (As) on the microbial composition of the soil and in the earthworm gut, as well as the spread and transmission of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). The results showed that, compared with As alone, the combined addition of PMB and As could significantly increase the bioaccumulation factor and toxicity of As in earthworm tissues by 12.1% and 16.0%, respectively. PMB treatment could significantly increase the abundance of Actinobacteria in the earthworm gut (from 35.6% to 45.2%), and As stress could significantly increase the abundance of Proteobacteria (from 19.8% to 56.9%). PMB and As stress both could significantly increase the abundance of ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs), which were positively correlated, indicating that ARGs might be horizontally transferred. The inactivation of antibiotics was the main resistance mechanism that microbes use to resist PMB and As stress. Network analysis showed that PMB and As might have antagonistic effects through competition with multi-drug resistant ARGs. The combined pollution by PMB and As significantly promoted the relative abundance of microbes carrying multi-drug resistant ARGs and MGEs, thereby increasing the risk of transmission of ARGs. This research advances the understanding of the interaction mechanism between antibiotics and heavy metals and provides new theoretical guidance for the environmental risk assessment and combined pollution management.

Effect of KH2PO4-modified biochar on immobilization of Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn and as during anaerobic digestion of swine manure

In this study, the immobilization performance and mechanisms of heavy metals (HMs) in swine manure (SM) during anaerobic digestion (AD) with biochar (BC) and KH₂PO₄-modified biochar (BP) were investigated. BC and BP addition decreased DTPA-extractable Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn amount, transformed these HMs to more stable state, and decreased the ecological risks of these HMs by 2 grades accordingly. BP exhibited a higher passivation efficiency for Cr, Cu and Pb and 5% -10% biochar dosage showed the maximum passivation effects. Characterization results showed that Cr, Cu and Pb immobilization with BP were mainly attributed to the formation of phosphate precipitation. However, both DTPA extraction and mobility of As increased with biochar addition, because the release of phosphorus in biochar had negative effect on As immobilization. BP could serve as a novel remediation agent for Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn passivation but special attention should be paid with As presence.

Chitosan as additive affects the bacterial community, accelerates the removals of antibiotics and related resistance genes during chicken manure composting

Manures, storages for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), pollute soil and water as well as endanger human health. Recently, we have been searching a better solution to remove antibiotics and ARGs during aerobic composting. Here, the dynamics of chitosan addition on the profiles of 71 ARGs, bacterial communities, chlortetracycline (CTC), ofloxacin (OFX) were investigated in chicken manure composting and compared with zeolite addition. Chitosan addition effectively reduces antibiotics contents (CTC under detection limit, OFX 90.96%), amounts (18) and abundance (56.7%, 11.1% higher than zeolite addition) of ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) after 42 days composting. Network analysis indicated that a total of 27 genera strains assigned into 4 phyla (Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes) were the potential hosts of ARGs. Redundancy analysis (RDA) demonstrated that bacterial community succession is the main contributor in the variation of ARGs. Overall, chitosan addition may effect bacterial composition by influencing physic-chemical properties and the concentration of antibiotics, Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺ to reduce the risk of ARG transmission. This study gives a new strategy about antibiotics and ARGs removal from composting on the basis of previous studies.

Key factors driving the fate of antibiotic resistance genes and controlling strategies during aerobic composting of animal manure: A review

Occurrence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in animal manure impedes the reutilization of manure resources. Aerobic composting is potentially effective method for resource disposal of animal manure, but the fate of ARGs during composting is complicated due to the various material sources and different operating conditions. This review concentrates on the biotic and abiotic factors influencing the variation of ARGs in composting and their potential mechanisms. The dynamic variations of biotic factors, including bacterial community, mobile genetic elements (MGEs) and existence forms of ARGs, are the direct driving factors of the fate of ARGs during composting. However, most key abiotic indicators, including pH, moisture content, antibiotics and heavy metals, interfere with the richness of ARGs indirectly by influencing the succession of bacterial community and abundance of MGEs. The effect of temperature on ARGs depends on whether the ARGs are intracellular or extracellular, which should be paid more attention. The emergence of various controlling strategies renders the composting products safer. Four potential removal mechanisms of ARGs in different controlling strategies have been concluded, encompassing the attenuation of selective/co-selective pressure on ARGs, killing the potential host bacteria of ARGs, reshaping the structure of bacterial community and reducing the cell-to-cell contact of bacteria. With the effective control of ARGs, aerobic composting is suggested to be a sustainable and promising approach to treat animal manure.

Bamboo charcoal enhances cellulase and urease activities during chicken manure composting: Roles of the bacterial community and metabolic functions

Microbial enzymes are crucial for material biotransformation during the composting process. In this study, we investigated the effects of adding bamboo charcoal (BC) (i.e., at 5%, 10%, and 20% corresponding to BC5, BC10, and BC20, respectively) on the enzyme activity levels during chicken manure composting. The results showed that BC10 could increase the cellulose and urease activities by 56% and 96%, respectively. The bacterial community structure in BC10 differed from those in the other treatments, and Luteivirga, Lactobacillus, Paenalcaligenes, Ulvibacter, Bacillus, Facklamia, Pelagibacterium, Sporosarcina, Cellvibrio, and Corynebacterium had the most important roles in composting. Compared with other treatments, BC10 significantly enhanced the average rates of degradation of carbohydrates (D-xylose (40%) and α-D-lactose (44%)) and amino acids (L-arginine (16%), L-asparagine (14%), and L-threonine (52%)). We also explored the associations among the bacterial community and their metabolic functions with the changes in the activities of enzymes. Network analysis demonstrated that BC10 altered the co-occurrence patterns of the bacterial communities, where Ulvibacter and class Bacilli were the keystone bacterial taxa with high capacities for degrading carbon source, and they were related to increases in the activities of cellulase and urease, respectively. The results obtained in this study may help to further enhance the efficiency of composting.

Arsenic bioaccumulation in the soil fauna alters its gut microbiome and microbial arsenic biotransformation capacity

The biotransformation of arsenic mediated by microorganisms plays an important role in the arsenic biogeochemical cycle. However, the fate and biotransformation of arsenic in different soil fauna gut microbiota are largely unknown. Herein the effects of arsenic contamination on five types of soil fauna were compared by examining variations in arsenic bioaccumulation, gut microbiota, and arsenic biotransformation genes (ABGs). Significant difference was observed in the arsenic bioaccumulation across several fauna body tissues, and Metaphire californica had the highest arsenic bioaccumulation, with a value of 107 ± 1.41 mg kg^-1. Arsenic exposure significantly altered overall patterns of ABGs; however, dominant genes involved in arsenic redox and other genes involved in arsenic methylation and demethylation were not significantly changed across animals. Except for M. californica, the abundance of ABGs in other animal guts firstly increased and then decreased with increasing arsenic concentrations. In addition, exposure of soil fauna to arsenic led to shifts in the unique gut-associated bacterial community, but the magnitude of these changes varied significantly across ecological groups of soil fauna. A good correlation between the gut bacterial communities and ABG profiles was observed, suggesting that gut microbiota plays important roles in the biotransformation of arsenic. Overall, these results provide a universal profiling of a microbial community capable of arsenic biotransformation in different fauna guts. Considering the global distribution of soil fauna in the terrestrial ecosystem, this finding broadens our understanding of the hidden role of soil fauna in the arsenic bioaccumulation and biogeochemical cycle.

Extracellular polymeric substances excreted by anammox sludge act as a barrier for As(III) invasion: Binding property and interaction mechanism

The arsenic in livestock wastewater would induce adverse impact on the biological treatment technology such as anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) play an important role in resisting such toxicity. Unfortunately, the role of EPS in protecting anammox from As(III) and the mechanisms underlying the protection still remains unclear. This work comprehensively evaluated the acute toxicity of arsenic on anammox sludge and investigated the binding property and interaction mechanism. The results revealed that the half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC₅₀) of As(III) on anammox sludge was estimated to be 408 mg L^-1, which decreased to 41.97 mg L^-1 when EPS was exfoliated. Complexation and hydrophobic interactions were the leading forces in preventing arsenic invasion. Protein was the main component that complexes with As(III), and O-H, -NH, -CO were binding sites. The response sequence of organic component in EPS to As(III) was ordered as hydrocarbons-proteins-polysaccharides-aliphatic amines.

Distribution characteristics, bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of heavy metals in the food web of grassland ecosystems

In this study, according to the classification of biological "classes" and the different trophic levels of the food web, the distribution characteristics, bioaccumulation of heavy metals (HMs) and their trophic transfer in the food web of typical grassland ecosystems were studied and predicted. The results indicated that the accumulation of toxic As was the highest in small mammals and reptiles, Cu was the highest in insects, and the micronutrient Zn in large mammals was higher than that in plants. The metal transfer factor (MTF) by plants at the first trophic level showed that Leymus chinensis had the best ability to absorb HMs from soil. The trophic transfer factor (TTF) of HMs in the second-trophic level insects, birds and some mammals were Zn > As > Cu > Ni > Pb > Co = Cr > Mn > V, in which, biomagnified on Zn, As, and Cu. Organisms at the third trophic level including birds, reptiles and some mammals had the strongest accumulation ability for Pb, V and As, and all were biomagnified. The biomagnification on As and Co of the fourth trophic level Siberian weasel was obviously higher than that of Dione's rat-snake, which had significant biomagnification effect on As by preying on Steppe toad-headed agama. The study showed that the bioaccumulation levels of HMs in organisms at different trophic levels varied significantly with species, prey, and organ type, but they all showed strong bioaccumulation capacity to toxic As, which indicated that As could produce certain toxic effects on animals in the food web through trophic transfer. In addition, organisms at low-trophic levels were more likely to biomagnify Zn, while organisms at high-trophic levels were more likely to biodilute Pb.

Bioaccumulation and translocation of trace elements in soil-irrigation water-wheat in arid agricultural areas of Xin Jiang, China

Pollution resulting from toxic trace elements is an increasing concern around the world especially in developing countries such as China. Rapid industrialisation, urbanisation and agricultural development are the dominant sources of anthropogenic contamination contributed to an increased potential toxicity of trace elements in the irrigation water-soil-food chain. Xin Jiang in China is a reserved cultivated land development area that could provide the most extensive strategic support for food production and arable land security in China. Thus, it is crucial to investigate the bioaccumulation and translocation of trace elements in order to assess the ecological and human health risks in the traditional oasis system of the agricultural areas in Bay Cheng County, Xin Jiang. This study analysed the levels of trace elements in different layers of the soil, the irrigation water and the wheat plants, and the relationships among them. The results indicated that cadmium (Cd) and chromium (Cr) were the primary pollutants in soils and wheats respectively, and they fell into the serious pollution category. However, no trace elements over the pollution limits were detected in irrigation water. The maximum values of trace elements appeared in the soil layers at 5-10 cm and 10-15 cm. The pollution levels of trace elements in the soil layers were found at 0-5 cm and 0-20 cm, which were higher than those at 20-80 cm. In wheat, high amounts of absorption for Se, Cr, Zn and Cu, but low for Pb were detected in different parts of a plant. The roots of wheats were more eco-toxic to Cd, Co and Pb than other tissues, indicating that roots were more effective at absorbing Cd, Co and Pb, as these metals are usually toxic in the soil. Se, Cu and Zn showed a higher ability of being transferred from soils to the edible parts of crops. The bio-transfer factors of Zn, Mo, Cu, Mg and Mn were considerably higher than those of other elements. The average cancer risk of As, Cd, Co, Ni and TCR in wheat grains exceeded the safety reference limit (1 × 10^-4). For the exposed population, Cr in wheat was the major contributor to total cancer risk. The average values of HQ of Cr, Mn and As, and total non-cancer risk index exceeded the corresponding effective safe reference doses (HQ > 1).

Occurrence of heavy metals, antibiotics, and antibiotic resistance genes in different kinds of land-applied manure in China

Various pollutants remaining in the livestock and poultry manures pose potential threat to the soil ecosystem during land application, whose impact should be appreciated. The occurrence of heavy metals, antibiotics, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in swine manure (SM), chicken manure (CM), and the SM organic fertilizer (OF) were investigated. The order of total concentrations of antibiotics detected in manures was as follows: SM > CM > OF. The amount of ciprofloxacin (CIP) in SM reached up to 6.61 mg/kg, which only occupied 1% of the antibiotic concentration reported in the past years. The total concentration of thirteen ARGs in CM ranked first, reaching 7.35 × 10¹¹ copies/g, among which the strB gene was detected with the highest concentration. It was worth noting that the qnr ARGs were persistent in OF with the absence of corresponding antibiotics, indicating ARGs were harder to remove than antibiotics during manure composting. Zn and Cu (46.5-843 mg/kg) were obviously higher than other seven heavy metals, and significantly correlated with most ARGs (p < 0.01). This study provided the basic data of the pollution in animal manures that will be land-applied, illuminating the original source of potential risk in soil ecosystem.

Fabrication of Fe3O4/ZIF-8 nanocomposite for simultaneous removal of copper and arsenic from water/soil/swine urine

In this study, a magnetic nanocomposite (denoted as FZ) was fabricated using Fe₃O₄and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), based on a coprecipitation method. FZ could efficiently remove Cu²⁺(Cu(II)) and AsO₂^- (As(III)) ions simultaneously from water, soil, and swine urine samples through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. The Cu(II) and As(III) removal efficiencies of the optimal FZ sample increased gradually with time and reached 99.1% and 98.4%, respectively, in 180 min. The maximum adsorption capacities of FZ4 for Cu(II) and As(III) were determined to be 33.48 mg/g and 21.12 mg/g, respectively. Additionally, the FZ with a high saturation magnetization (49.8 emu/g) was easily recovered from aqueous solutions and soil samples. Furthermore, zebrafish experiments indicated that FZ possessed a high biosafety. Thus, this study introduces a promising method for treating water, soil, and swine urine samples contaminated with Cu(II) and As(III), and verifies that FZ is suitable for practical application.

The process of biotransformation can produce insect protein and promote the effective inactivation of heavy metals

An experiment was performed to study the inactivation effect of aerobic composting on heavy metals in maggot, pig and chicken manures. After composting, Cu mainly occurred in the oxidizable (OXI) fraction with a percentage distribution above 54%. Zn and Cd mainly existed in the bioavailable factor (BF), which has strong activity, with percentage distributions greater than 88.3% and 82.7%, respectively. Cr and Pb mainly existed in the stable residual (RES) fraction with a percentage distribution of approximately 50%. The aerobic composting process had a clear inactivation effect on heavy metals. For maggot manure compost in particular, the inactivation effects of Cu, Cr, Zn, Cd, and Pb were very good throughout the composting process, and the inactivation effect of Pb reached 54.42%. In addition, the process of biotransformation by housefly maggots promoted the conversion of fulvic acid (FA) to humic acid (HA) in pig manure, and the final increase in HA/FA after maggot manure composting was the largest among the different types of manure and beneficial to the inactivation of heavy metals. Compounds containing -CH₃ and -CH₂ groups were reduced, and aromatic structures were enhanced. Moreover, a maggot yield equivalent to 13.2% of the fresh pig manure was achieved during the process of biotransformation. The correlation analysis results showed that moisture content was an important factor affecting the inactivation rates of heavy metals in the three manure composts. Our results highlight that the process of biotransformation by housefly maggots can promote composting maturity and the inactivation of heavy metals, and produce a large amount of insect protein, yielding beneficial ecological and economic benefits.

Increase in arsenic methylation and volatilization during manure composting with biochar amendment in an aeration bioreactor

Biochar is widely used as an amendment to optimize the composting process. In this study, we firstly investigated the effects of biochar amendment on methylation and volatilization of arsenic (As), and the microbial communities during manure composting. Biochar amendment was found to increase the concentrations of monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) during mesophilic (days 0-10) and early thermophilic (days 11-15) phases, and promote As volatilization during the maturing phase (days 60-80) of composting. In addition, the abundances of As(V) reductase (arsC) and As(III) S-adenosyl-L-methionine methyltransferase (arsM) genes were higher in the biochar treatment than that in the control. Moreover, biochar amendment influenced the microbial communities by promoting As methylation and volatilization via Ensifer and Sphingobium carrying arsC genes, and Rhodopseudomonas and Pseudomonas carrying arsM genes. This study emphasized the considerable role of biochar on methylation and volatilization of As during manure composting and provided an overall characterization of the community compositions of arsC and arsM genes during manure composting. It will broaden our insights in As biogeochemical cycle during manure composting with biochar amendment, which will facilitate the regulation of As during manure composting and its application in agricultural soil.

Coupling thermophilic composting and vermicomposting processes to remove Cr from biogas residues and produce high value-added biofertilizers

Removing pollutants and producing high value-added products are essential steps for sustainable disposal and utilization of biogas residues. Here, a coupled thermophilic composting and vermicomposting process was used to remove Cr from biogas residues, and the composting products were co-fermented with the plant growth-promoting fungus Trichoderma to produce high value-added biofertilizers. The results showed that thermophilic composting for 37 d markedly increased the total content of Cr but decreased the percentage of available Cr fractions. Synchrotron-radiation-based observations further provided direct evidence of the binding sites to support the results from traditional sequential extraction. At a density of 60 g earthworm/kg biogas residues, vermicomposting removed 23-31% of Cr from biogas residues. After vermicomposting, co-fermentation of biogas residues and Trichoderma was optimized, in which Trichoderma spores were 2-5 × 10⁸ cfu/g substrates. Together, coupling thermophilic composting and vermicomposting processes is a promising technique to remove a portion of heavy metals from biogas residues.
