Developments of electrospinning technology in membrane bioreactor: A review

The necessity for effective wastewater treatment and purification has grown as a result of the increasing pollution issues brought on by industrial and municipal wastewater. Membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology stands out when compared to other treatment methods because of its high efficiency, environmental friendliness, small footprint, and ease of maintenance. However, the development and application of membrane bioreactors has been severely constrained by the higher cost and shorter service life of these devices brought on by membrane biofouling issues resulting from contaminants and bacteria in the water. The nanoscale size of the electrospinning products provides unique microstructure, and the technology facilitates the production of structurally different membranes, or the modification and functionalization of membranes, which makes it possible to solve the membrane fouling problem. Therefore, many current studies have attempted to use electrospinning in MBRs to address membrane fouling and ultimately improve treatment efficacy. Meanwhile, in addition to solving the problem of membrane fouling, the fabrication technology of electrospinning also shows great advantages in constructing thin porous fiber membrane materials with controllable surface wettability and layered structure, which is helpful for the performance enhancement of MBR and expanding innovation. This paper systematically reviews the application and research progress of electrospinning in MBRs. Firstly, the current status of the application of electrospinning technology in various MBRs is introduced, and the relevant measures to solve the membrane fouling based on electrospinning technology are analyzed. Subsequently, some new types of MBRs and new application areas developed with the help of electrospinning technology are introduced. Finally, the limitations and challenges of merging the two technologies are presented, and pertinent recommendations are provided for future research on the use of electrospinning technology in membrane bioreactors.

A comprehensive evaluation of the temporal and spatial fouling characteristics of RO membranes in a full-scale seawater desalination plant

The fouling of seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) membranes remains a persistent challenge in desalination. Previous research has focused mainly on fouling separately; however, organic, inorganic, and biofouling can coexist and influence each other. Hence, in-depth study of the spatiotemporal changes in actual combined fouling in full-scale seawater desalination will provide more effective information for fouling investigation and control. In this study, we monitored (i) the operational performance of a full-scale desalination plant for 7 years and (ii) the development and characterization of membrane and spacer fouling at different locations of spiral-wound membrane modules sampled after 2.5-, 3.5-, and 7-year operation. The findings showed that (i) operational performance indicators declined with time (normalized flux 40 % reduction, salt rejection 2 % in 7 years), with a limited effect of the 20-day cleaning frequency, (ii) fouling accumulation in the membrane module mainly occurred at the feed side of the lead module and the microbial community in these area exhibited the highest diversity, (iii) the dominant microbial OTUs belonged mainly to Proteobacteria (43-70 %), followed by Bacteroidetes (10-11 %), (iv) Phylogenetic molecular ecological networks and Spearman correlation analysis revealed that Chloroflexi (Anaerolineae) and Planctomycetes were keystone species in maintaining the community structure and biofilm maturation and significantly impacted the foulant content on the SWRO membrane, even with low abundance, and that (v) fouling accumulation was composed of polysaccharides, soluble microbial products, marine humic acid-like substances, and inorganic Ca/Fe/Mg/Si dominate the fouling layer of both the membrane and spacer. Overall, variation partitioning analysis quantitatively describes the increasing contribution of biofouling over time. Ultimately, the organic‒inorganic-biofouling interaction (70 %) significantly contributed to the overall fouling of the membrane after 7 years of operation. These results can be used to develop more targeted fouling control strategies to optimize SWRO desalination plant design and operation.

Biomimetic redox-responsive smart coatings with resistance-release functions for reverse osmosis membranes

Membrane fouling induces catastrophic loss of separation performance and seriously restricts the applications of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. Inspired by the mussel structure, polydopamine (PDA) and cystamine molecules (CA) with excellent anti-fouling properties were used to prepare accessible, biocompatible, and redox-responsive coatings for RO membranes. The PDA/CA-coated RO membranes exhibit a superior water flux of 65 L m-2 h-1 with a favourable NaCl rejection exceeding 99%. The water permeability through the PDA/CA-coated membrane is much higher than that of most membranes with similar rejection rates. Due to the formed protective hydration layers by PDA/CA coatings, anti-fouling properties against proteins, polysaccharides and surfactants were evaluated separately, and ultralow fouling properties were demonstrated. Moreover, the disulfide linkages in CA molecules can cleave in a reducing environment, yielding the degradation of PDA/CA coatings, thereby removing the foulants deposited on the coatings. The degradation endows the coated membranes with satisfying longtime anti-fouling properties, where the flux recovery reaches up to 90%. The construction of redox-responsive smart coatings not only provided a promising route to alleviate membrane fouling but can also be upscaled for use in numerous practical applications like sensors, medical devices, and drug delivery.

Removal of natural organic matter from surface water sources by nanofiltration and surface engineering membranes for fouling mitigation - A review

Given that surface water is the primary supply of drinking water worldwide, the presence of natural organic matter (NOM) in surface water presents difficulties for water treatment facilities. During the disinfection phase of the drinking water treatment process, NOM aids in the creation of toxic disinfection by-products (DBPs). This problem can be effectively solved using the nanofiltration (NF) membrane method, however NOM can significantly foul NF membranes, degrading separation performance and membrane integrity, necessitating the development of fouling-resistant membranes. This review offers a thorough analysis of the removal of NOM by NF along with insights into the operation, mechanisms, fouling, and its controlling variables. In light of engineering materials with distinctive features, the potential of surface-engineered NF membranes is here critically assessed for the impact on the membrane surface, separation, and antifouling qualities. Case studies on surface-engineered NF membranes are critically evaluated, and properties-to-performance connections are established, as well as challenges, trends, and predictions for the field's future. The effect of alteration on surface properties, interactions with solutes and foulants, and applications in water treatment are all examined in detail. Engineered NF membranes containing zwitterionic polymers have the greatest potential to improve membrane permeance, selectivity, stability, and antifouling performance. To support commercial applications, however, difficulties related to material production, modification techniques, and long-term stability must be solved promptly. Fouling resistant NF membrane development would be critical not only for the water treatment industry, but also for a wide range of developing applications in gas and liquid separations.

Degradation of Polyamide Nanofiltration Membranes by Bromine: Changes of Physiochemical Properties and Filtration Performance

The potential coexistence and interaction of bromine and polyamide membranes during membrane-based water treatment prompts us to investigate the effect of bromine on membrane performance. For fully aromatic polyamide membrane NF90 exposed under a mild bromination condition (10 mg/L), bromine incorporation resulted in more negatively charged (-13 vs -25 mV) and hydrophobic (55.2 vs 58.9°) surfaces and narrower pore channels (0.3 vs 0.29 nm). The permeabilities of water and neutral solutes were reduced by 64 and 69-87%, respectively, which was attributed to the decreased effective pore radius and hydrophilicity. NaCl permeability was reduced by 90% as a synergistic result of enhanced size exclusion and charge repulsion. The further exposure (100 and 500 mg/L bromine) resulted in a more hydrophobic surface (61.7 and 65.5°) and the minor further reduction for water and solute permeabilities (1-9%). Compared with chlorine, the different incorporation efficiency and properties (e.g., atomic size, hydrophilicity) of bromine resulted in opposite trends and/or different degrees for the variation of physicochemical properties and filtration performance of membranes. The bromine incorporation, the shift and disappearance of three characteristic bands, and the increased O/N ratio and calcium content indicated the degradation pathways of N-bromination and bromination-promoted hydrolysis under mild bromination conditions (480 mg/L·h). The further ring-bromination occurred after severe bromine exposure (4800-24,000 mg/L·h). The semi-aromatic polyamide membrane NF270 underwent a similar but less significant deteriorated filtration performance compared with NF90, which requires a different explanation.

Reactivity of the Polyamide Membrane Monomer with Free Chlorine: Role of Bromide

Aromatic polyamide-based membranes are widely used for reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) treatment but degrade when exposed to free chlorine (HOCl/OCl^-). The reaction mechanisms with free chlorine were previously explored, but less is known about the role of bromide (Br^-) in these processes. Br^- may impact these reactions by reacting with HOCl to form HOBr, which then triggers other brominating agents (Br₂O, Br₂, BrOCl, and BrCl) to form. This study examined the reactivities of these brominating agents with a polyamide monomer model compound, benzanilide (BA), and a modified version of it, N-CH₃-BA. The results indicated that all these brominating agents only attacked the aromatic ring adjacent to the amide N, rather than the amide N, different from the previously examined chlorinating agents (HOCl, OCl^-, and Cl₂) that attacked both sites. Orton rearrangement was not observed. Species-specific rate constants (k_i, M^-1 s^-1) between BA and HOBr, Br₂O, Br₂, BrOCl, and BrCl were determined to be (5.3 ± 1.2) × 10^-2, (1.2 ± 0.4) × 10¹, (3.7 ± 0.2) × 10², (2.2 ± 0.6) × 10⁴, and (6.6 ± 0.9) × 10⁴ M^-1 s^-1, respectively, such that k_BrCl > k_BrOCl > k_Br2 > k_Br2O > k_HOBr. N-CH₃-BA exhibited lower reactivity than BA. Model predictions of BA loss during chlorination with varied Br^- and/or Cl^- concentrations were established. These findings will ultimately enable membrane degradation and performance loss following chlorination in mixed halide solutions to be better predicted during pilot- and full-scale NF and RO treatment.

Simulating and predicting the flux change of reverse osmosis membranes over time during wastewater reclamation caused by organic fouling

During the operation of the RO system, it's significant to predict the flux change over time. Previous research conducted detailed exploration on the dynamics of RO membrane fouling, and provided a solid database for modelling. In this study, a modified intermediate blocking model with two parameters was proposed to describe the flux change of RO membranes under a huge variety of conditions. Raw data reported by over 20 research groups from 11 different countries was used to validate the feasibility of this model. It proved applicable to describe the flux change of RO membranes fouled by pure organic matter or mixture and tertiary treated wastewater. In order to reveal the relationship between model parameters and foulant concentrations, RO membrane fouling behaviors of typical foulants (sodium alginate (SA), bovine serum albumin (BSA) and mixture) were further investigated. We found that the change of model parameters with SA concentrations was in accordance with Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. Therefore, the model parameters could be calculated by SA concentrations under certain optional conditions, and then the flux change could be predicted by this model. In this way, a novel time-course model was established, which could predict the flux change of RO membranes over time only with SA concentrations. Besides, the synergic effect between SA and BSA on RO membrane fouling was directly quantified.

Repeated pressurization as a potential cause of deterioration in virus removal by aged reverse osmosis membrane used in households

Reverse osmosis (RO) membrane is widely used for household water treatment in areas with limited access to safe drinking water; however, some studies documented deterioration in the quality of RO permeate. Repeated pressurization from intermittent operation in households is suspected to have an adverse effect on RO. This study aimed to evaluate virus removal by RO used in actual households as well as the water quality of permeate, and to elucidate the main cause of RO deterioration. We conducted a survey in households in Hanoi, Vietnam, to collect 27 membranes along with their usage history, where virus removal was investigated in laboratory. Of the used RO membranes, 22% did not show the protective level, >3 log₁₀ (99.9%) virus removal, recommended by World Health Organization. The differences in virus removal among Aichi virus, MS2 and φX-174 were <0.5 log₁₀. All membranes with estimated pressurization times of <4000 showed >3 log₁₀ virus removal, while 17% of membranes used for <3years, the manufacturers' warranty period, did not achieve the criterion. Therefore, virus removal performance may not be assured even if the users replace the membrane following the warranty period. Furthermore, more pressurized membranes exhibited significantly lower virus removal than less pressurized ones, suggesting a major role of repeated pressurization in the deterioration of RO. Coliforms were detected from 44% of the permeate of the point-of-use devices applying RO (RO-POU), raising concerns on the extrinsic contamination and regrowth of bacteria. Consequently, RO in households may deteriorate more rapidly than the manufactures' expectation due to repeated pressurization. RO in households should be replaced based on not only membrane age but also total pressurized times (i.e., 4000 times) to keep the protective level of virus removal. The deteriorated bacterial quality in RO permeate suggested the need for installing post-treatment, such as UV irradiation.

Deterioration Mechanism of a Tertiary Polyamide Reverse Osmosis Membrane by Hypochlorite

A tertiary polyamide membrane was synthesized using N,N'-dimethyl-m-phenylenediamine. The durability of this membrane to chlorination by hypochlorite treatment followed by sodium hydroxide treatment was examined, and then deterioration mechanisms were proposed. The tertiary polyamide membrane demonstrated better durability to free chlorine than a conventional secondary polyamide one; however, the former was deteriorated by hypochlorite for 24 h at 2000 ppm of free chlorine below pH 7.5. The salt rejection and permeation performance of the membrane were almost unchanged, and the least chlorination of the active layer occurred during hypochlorite treatment at pH 10. These results indicated that hypochlorous acid rather than hypochlorite ion was the free chlorine species that induced membrane deterioration. The deterioration became severe as chlorination progressed, resulting in collapse of the active layer below pH 7.5. Chlorination and hydrolysis of the model tertiary amide N-methylbenzanilide and Fourier transfer infrared spectroscopy of a deteriorated membrane showed that chlorination of the tertiary polyamide occurred via direct chlorination of the benzene bound to the amidic nitrogen. Silver ion probing of the deteriorated membrane revealed that amide bond scission occurred in the active layer, which might be related to the electron deficiency of the amidic nitrogen caused by chlorination of its benzene ring.

Reverse osmosis membrane composition, structure and performance modification by bisulphite, iron(III), bromide and chlorite exposure

Reverse osmosis (RO) membrane exposure to bisulphite, chlorite, bromide and iron(III) was assessed in terms of membrane composition, structure and performance. Membrane composition was determined by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) and membrane performance was assessed by water and chloride permeation, using a modified version of the solution-diffusion model. Iron(III) dosage in presence of bisulphite led to an autooxidation of the latter, probably generating free radicals which damaged the membrane. It comprised a significant raise in chloride passage (chloride permeation coefficient increased 5.3-5.1 fold compared to the virgin membrane under the conditions studied) rapidly. No major differences in terms of water permeability and membrane composition were observed. Nevertheless, an increase in the size of the network pores, and a raise in the fraction of aggregate pores of the polyamide (PA) layer were identified, but no amide bond cleavage was observed. These structural changes were therefore, in accordance with the transport properties observed.
