Evaluation of factors influencing annual occurrence, bioaccumulation, and biomagnification of antibiotics in planktonic food webs of a large subtropical river in South China

Indirect Impact of Eutrophication on Occurrence, Air-Water Exchange, and Vertical Sinking Fluxes of Antibiotics in a Subtropical River

A significant challenge that warrants attention is the influence of eutrophication on the biogeochemical cycle of emerging contaminants (ECs) in aquatic environments. Antibiotics pollution in the eutrophic Pearl River in South China was examined to offer new insights into the effects of eutrophication on the occurrence, air-water exchange fluxes (Fair-water), and vertical sinking fluxes (Fsinking) of antibiotics. Antibiotics transferred to the atmosphere primarily through aerosolization controlled by phytoplankton biomass and significant spatiotemporal variations were observed in the Fair-water of individual antibiotics throughout all sites and seasons. The Fsinking of ∑AB14 (defined as a summary of 14 antibiotics) was 750.46 ± 283.19, 242.71 ± 122.87, and 346.74 ± 249.52 ng of m-2 d-1 in spring, summer, and winter seasons. Eutrophication indirectly led to an elevated pH, which reduced seasonal Fair-water of antibiotics, sediment aromaticity, and phytoplankton hydrophobicity, thereby decreasing antibiotic accumulation in sediments and phytoplankton. Negative correlations were further found between Fsinking and the water column daily loss of antibiotics with phytoplankton biomass. The novelty of this study is to provide new complementary knowledge for the regulation mechanisms of antibiotics by phytoplankton biological pump, offering novel perspectives and approaches to understanding the coupling between eutrophication and migration and fate of antibiotics in a subtropical eutrophic river.

Encapsulate Co3O4 within ultrathin graphene sheets to enhance peroxymonosulfate activation by tuning surface electronic structures

Heterojunctions composed of cobalt-based materials and carbon materials have been recognized as the efficient catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to generate reactive oxygen species for the removal of environmental contaminants. However, the role of carbon materials in promoting the heterojunction systems has not been fully understood. This study synthesized a heterojunction material of graphene sheets encapsulating Co3O4 (GCO-500) through the pyrolysis of cobalt MOF and applied it to activate PMS for the removal of lomefloxacin. The results showed a high removal rate of 93.59 % with a degradation rate of k1 = 0.0156 min-1. Co3O4 clusters was encapsulated within ultrathin graphene sheets (<2 nm). DFT calculations revealed that graphene layers improve the electron transfer ability of Co3O4 and increased the d-band center of Co3O4 (-1.61 eV) that promote the adsorption of PMS on GCO-500 (-1.32 eV). In the meanwhile, organic pollutant was enriched in graphene layers with high adsorption energy (-13.08 eV), which greatly enhanced the degradation efficiency of pharmaceuticals. This study provides an effective catalyst for PMS activation and sheds light on the fundamental electronic-level understanding of cobalt-based and carbon heterojunction catalysts in PMS activation.

Occurrence, bioaccumulation, fate, and risk assessment of emerging pollutants in aquatic environments: A review

Significant concerns on a global scale have been raised in response to the potential adverse impacts of emerging pollutants (EPs) on aquatic creatures. We have carefully reviewed relevant research over the past 10 years. The study focuses on five typical EPs: pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), drinking water disinfection byproducts (DBPs), brominated flame retardants (BFRs), and microplastics (MPs). The presence of EPs in the global aquatic environment is source-dependent, with wastewater treatment plants being the main source of EPs. Multiple studies have consistently shown that the final destination of most EPs in the water environment is sludge and sediment. Simultaneously, a number of EPs, such as PFASs, MPs, and BFRs, have long-term environmental transport potential. Some EPs exhibit notable tendencies towards bioaccumulation and biomagnification, while others pose challenges in terms of their degradation within both biological and abiotic treatment processes. The results showed that, in most cases, the ecological risk of EPs in aquatic environments was low, possibly due to potential dilution and degradation. Future research topics should include adding EPs detection items for the aquatic environment, combining pollution, and updating prediction models.

Chitin/calcite composite extracted from shell waste as a low-cost adsorbent for removal of tetracycline and ciprofloxacin: Effects and mechanisms

Recently, water contamination caused by the misuse of antibiotics has become a growing concern. In this study, an economical chitin/calcite composite (CCA) was extracted from crab shell waste, and the effects and mechanisms of its removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP) and tetracycline (TC) from aqueous solution were investigated. The functional groups of chitin and the metal phase of calcite gave CCA the ability to remove antibiotics. Experiments on kinetics, isothermal adsorption, thermodynamics, co-removal, and reusability were conducted to systematically explore the adsorption performances of CCA toward antibiotics. The pseudo-second-order (FSO) and Langmuir models suited the data obtained from experiments best and displayed a good fit for the chemisorption and a certain homogeneity of adsorption sites. At 25 °C, the maximum adsorption capacities (Qmax) toward CIP and TC were 228.86 and 150.76 mg g-1, respectively. The adsorption mechanisms of CCA with TC and CIP are pH dependent since pH can affect the surface charge of CCA and the form in which CIP and TC are existing. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) demonstrated that the keto-O and carboxyl groups of CIP and the carbonyl, hydroxyl, and amido groups of TC could be responsible for the binding with the calcite and the functional groups of chitin through surface complexation, cation bridge and hydrogen bonding.

Source apportionment and predictable driving factors contribute to antibiotics profiles in Changshou Lake of the Three Gorges Reservoir area, China

Lakes, crucial antibiotic reservoirs, lack thorough exploration of quantitative relationships between antibiotics and influencing factors. Here, we conducted a comprehensive year-long investigation in Changshou Lake within the Three Gorges Reservoir area, China. The concentrations of 21 antibiotics spanned 35.6-200 ng/L, 50.3-348 ng/L and 0.57-57.9 ng/g in surface water, overlying water and sediment, respectively. Compared with abundant water period, surface water and overlying water displayed significantly high antibiotic concentrations in flat and low water periods, while sediment remained unchanged. Moreover, tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones and erythromycin posed notable risks to algae. Six primary sources were identified using positive matrix factorization model, with aquaculture contributing 21.2%, 22.7% and 25.4% in surface water, overlying water and sediment, respectively. The crucial predictors were screened through machine learning, redundancy analysis and Mantel test. Our findings emphasized the pivotal roles of water quality parameters, including water temperature (WT), pH, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, inorganic anions (NO3⁻, Cl⁻ and F⁻) and metal cations (Ca, Mg, Fe, K and Cr), with WT influencing greatest. Total nitrogen (TN), cation exchange capacity, K, Al and Cd significantly impacted sediment antibiotics, with TN having the most pronounced effect. This study can promise valuable insights for environmental planning and policies addressing antibiotic pollution.

Urban agglomerations as an environmental dimension of antibiotics transmission through the "One Health" lens

The spatiotemporal distributions of antibiotics in different media have been widely reported; however, their occurrence in the environmental dimension of the Chinese urban agglomerations has received less attention, especially in bioaccumulation and health risks of antibiotics through the "One Health" lens. The review presents the current knowledge on the environmental occurrence, bioaccumulation, as well as health exposure risks in urban agglomerations through the "One Health" lens, and identifies current information gaps. The reviewed studies suggested antibiotic concentrations in water and soil were more sensitive to social indicators of urban agglomerations than those in sediment. The ecological risk and resistance risk of antibiotics in water were much higher than those of sediments, and the high-risk phenomenon occurred at a higher frequency in urban agglomerations. Erythromycin-H2O (ETM-H2O), amoxicillin (AMOX) and norfloxacin (NFC) were priority-controlled antibiotics in urban waters. Tetracyclines (TCs) posed medium to high risks to soil organisms in the soil of urban agglomerations. Health risk evaluation based on dietary intake showed that children had the highest dietary intake of antibiotics in urban agglomerations. The health risk of antibiotics was higher in children than in other age groups. Our results also demonstrated that dietary structure might impact health risks associated with target antibiotics in urban agglomerations to some extent.

Antibiotics soil-solution chemistry: A review of environmental behavior and uptake and transformation by plants

The increased use of antibiotics by humans for various purposes has left the environment polluted. Antibiotic pollution remediation is challenging because antibiotics exist in trace amounts and only highly sensitive detection techniques could be used to quantify them. Nevertheless, their trace quantity is not a hindrance to their transfer along the food chain, causing sensitization and the development of antibiotic resistance. Despite an increase in the literature on antibiotic pollution and the development and transfer of antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs), little attention has been given to the behavior of antibiotics at the soil-solution interface and how this affects antibiotic adsorption-desorption interactions and subsequent uptake and transformation by plants. Thus, this review critically examines the interactions and possible degradation mechanisms of antibiotics in soil and the link between antibiotic soil-solution chemistry and uptake by plants. Also, different factors influencing antibiotic mobility in soil and the transfer of ARGs from one organism to another were considered. The mechanistic and critical analyses revealed that: (a) the charge characteristics of antibiotics at the soil-root interface determine whether they are adsorbed to soil or taken up by plants; (b) antibiotics that avoid soil colloids and reach soil pore water can be absorbed by plant roots, but their translocation to the stem and leaves depends on the ionic state of the molecule; (c) few studies have explored how plants adapt to antibiotic pollution and the transformation of antibiotics in plants; and (d) the persistence of antibiotics in cropland soils can be influenced by the content of soil organic matter, coexisting ions, and fertilization practices. Future research should focus on the soil/solution-antibiotic-plant interactions to reveal detailed mechanisms of antibiotic transformation by plants and whether plant-transformed antibiotics could be of environmental risk.

Maternal or Paternal Antibiotics? Intergenerational Transmission and Reproductive Toxicity in Zebrafish

Despite the known direct toxicity of various antibiotics to aquatic organisms, the potential chronic impact through intergenerational transmission on reproduction remains elusive. Here, we exposed zebrafish to a mixture of 15 commonly consumed antibiotics at environmentally relevant concentrations (1 and 100 μg L-1) with a cross-mating design. A high accumulation of antibiotics was detected in the ovary (up to 904.58 ng g-1) and testis (up to 1704.49 ng g-1) of F0 fish. The transmission of antibiotics from the F0 generation to the subsequent generation (F1 offspring) was confirmed with a transmission rate (ki) ranging from 0.11 to 2.32. The maternal transfer of antibiotics was significantly higher, relative to paternal transfer, due to a greater role of transmission through ovarian enrichment and oviposition compared to testis enrichment. There were similar impairments in reproductive and developmental indexes on F1 eggs found following both female and male parental exposure. Almost all antibiotics were eliminated in F2 eggs in comparison to F1 eggs. However, there were still reproductive and developmental toxic responses observed in F2 fish, suggesting that antibiotic concentration levels were not the only criterion for evaluating the toxic effects for each generation. These findings unveil the intergenerational transmission mechanism of antibiotics in fish models and underscore their potential and lasting impact in aquatic environments.

Long-term application of organic fertilizer prompting the dispersal of antibiotic resistance genes and their health risks in the soil plastisphere

Microplastic (MP) pollution is a rapidly growing global environmental concern that has led to the emergence of a new environmental compartment, the plastisphere, which is a hotspot for the accumulation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and human bacterial pathogens (HBPs). However, studies on the effects of long-term organic fertilizer application on the dispersal of ARGs and virulence factor genes (VFGs) in the plastisphere of farmland soil have been limited. Here, we performed a field culture experiment by burying nylon bags filled with MPs in paddy soil that had been treated with different fertilizers for over 30 years to explore the changes of ARGs and VFGs in soil plastisphere. Our results show that the soil plastisphere amplified the ARG and VFG pollution caused by organic fertilization by 1.5 and 1.4 times, respectively. And it also led to a 2.7-fold increase in the risk of horizontal gene transfer. Meanwhile, the plastisphere tended to promote deterministic process in the community assembly of HBPs, with an increase of 1.4 times. Network analysis found a significant correlation between ARGs, VFGs, and bacteria in plastisphere. Correlation analysis highlight the important role of mobile genetic elements (MGEs) and bacterial communities in shaping the abundance of ARGs and VFGs, respectively. Our findings provide new insights into the health risk associated with the soil plastisphere due ARGs and VFGs derived from organic fertilizers.

Occurrence, Distribution, and Trophic Transfer of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products in the Bohai Sea

The ubiquitous presence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in environments has aroused global concerns; however, minimal information is available regarding their multimedia distribution, bioaccumulation, and trophic transfer in marine environments. Herein, we analyzed 77 representative PPCPs in samples of surface and bottom seawater, surface sediments, and benthic biota from the Bohai Sea. PPCPs were pervasively detected in seawater, sediments, and benthic biota, with antioxidants being the most abundant PPCPs. PPCP concentrations positively correlated between the surface and bottom water with a decreasing trend from the coast to the central oceans. Higher PPCP concentrations in sediment were found in the Yellow River estuary, and the variations in the physicochemical properties of PPCPs and sediment produced a different distribution pattern of PPCPs in sediment from seawater. The log Dow, but not log Kow, showed a linear and positive relationship with bioaccumulation and trophic magnification factors and a parabolic relationship with biota-sediment accumulation factors. The trophodynamics of miconazole and acetophenone are reported for the first time. This study provides novel insights into the multimedia distribution and biomagnification potential of PPCPs and suggests that log Dow is a better indicator of their bioaccumulation and trophic magnification.

Occurrence, Bioaccumulation, Metabolism and Ecotoxicity of Fluoroquinolones in the Aquatic Environment: A Review

In recent years, there has been growing concern about antibiotic contamination in water bodies, particularly the widespread presence of fluoroquinolones (FQs), which pose a serious threat to ecosystems due to their extensive use and the phenomenon of "pseudo-persistence". This article provides a comprehensive review of the literature on FQs in water bodies, summarizing and analyzing contamination levels of FQs in global surface water over the past three years, as well as the bioaccumulation and metabolism patterns of FQs in aquatic organisms, their ecological toxicity, and the influencing factors. The results show that FQs contamination is widespread in surface water across the surveyed 32 countries, with ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin being the most heavy contaminants. Furthermore, contamination levels are generally higher in developing and developed countries. It has been observed that compound types, species, and environmental factors influence the bioaccumulation, metabolism, and toxicity of FQs in aquatic organisms. FQs tend to accumulate more in organisms with higher lipid content, and toxicity experiments have shown that FQs exhibit the highest toxicity to bacteria and the weakest toxicity to mollusk. This article summarizes and analyzes the current research status and shortcomings of FQs, providing guidance and theoretical support for future research directions.

Towards the fate of antibiotics and the development of related resistance genes in stream biofilms

Antibiotics are ubiquitously found in natural surface waters and cause great harm to aquatic organisms. Stream biofilm is a complex and active community composed of algae, bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms, which mainly adheres to solid substances such as rocks and sediments. The durability and diverse structural and metabolic characteristics of biofilms make them a representative of microbial life in aquatic micrecosystems and can reflect major ecosystem processes. Microorganisms and extracellular polymeric substances in biofilms can adsorb and actively accumulate antibiotics. Therefore, biofilms are excellent biological indicators for detecting antibiotic in polluted aquatic environments, but the biotransformation potential of stream biofilms for antibiotics has not been fully explored in the aquatic environment. The characteristics of stream biofilm, such as high abundance and activity of bacterial community, wide contact area with pollutants, etc., which increases the opportunity of biotransformation of antibiotics in biofilm and contribute to bioremediation to improve ecosystem health. Recent studies have demonstrated that both exposure to high and sub-minimum inhibitory concentrations of antibiotics may drive the development of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in natural stream biofilms, which are susceptible to the effects of antibiotic residues, microbial communities and mobile genetic elements, etc. On the basis of peer-reviewed papers, this review explores the distribution behavior of antibiotics in stream biofilms and the contribution of biofilms to the acquisition and spread of antibiotic resistance. Considering that antibiotics and ARGs alter the structure and ecological functions of natural microbial communities and pose a threat to river organisms and human health, our research findings provide comprehensive insights into the migration, transformation, and bioavailability of antibiotics in biofilms.

Phytoplankton Biological Pump Controls the Spatiotemporal Bioaccumulation and Trophic Transfer of Antibiotics in a Large Subtropical River

The spatiotemporal bioaccumulation, trophic transfer of antibiotics, and regulation of the phytoplankton biological pump were quantitatively evaluated in the Pearl River, South China. The occurrence of antibiotics in organisms indicated a significant spatiotemporal trend associated with the life cycle of phytoplankton. Higher temporal bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) were found in phytoplankton at the bloom site, while lower BAFs of antibiotics in organisms could not be explained by phytoplankton biomass dilution but were attributed to the low bioavailability of antibiotics, which was highly associated with distribution coefficients (R2 = 0.480-0.595, p < 0.05). Such lower BAFs of antibiotics in phytoplankton at higher biomass sites hampered the entry of antibiotics into food webs, and trophic dilutions were subsequently observed for antibiotics except for ciprofloxacin (CFX) and sulfamerazine (SMZ) at sites with blooms in all seasons. Distribution of CFX, norfloxacin (NFX), and sulfapyridine (SPD) showed further significant positive relationships with the plasma protein fraction (R2 = 0.275-0.216, p < 0.05). Both mean BAFs and trophic magnification factors (TMFs) were significantly negatively correlated with phytoplankton biomass (R2 = 0.661-0.741, p < 0.05). This study highlights the importance of the biological pump in the regulation of spatiotemporal variations in bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of antibiotics in anthropogenic-impacted eutrophic rivers in subtropical regions.

Coupled multimedia fate and bioaccumulation models for predicting fate of florfenicol and fluoroquinolones in water and fish organs in the seasonal ice-sealed reservoir

Ice formation in reservoirs could promote the accumulation of antibiotics in fish, potentially leading to elevated concentrations in fish muscles, kidneys, and livers. However, for the seasonal ice-sealed reservoirs, antibiotic sampling and detecting conditions in water and fish are normally limited by the ice cover. Additionally, previous studies on the prediction of antibiotics accumulated in seasonal ice-sealed reservoir fish are scarce. This study presents a coupled model incorporating a multimedia fate model and a bioaccumulation model to predict antibiotic fate in water and the muscles, kidneys, and livers of fish in seasonal ice-sealed reservoirs. Prediction concentrations of florfenicol were higher than those of ofloxacin and norfloxacin in both water and fish from the seasonal ice-sealed reservoir. Log bioaccumulation factors of antibiotics in Cyprinus carpio and Hypophthalmichthys nobilis in January 2021 were higher than those in October 2020 by 21.5% and 12.6%, respectively. Antibiotics mean transfer fluxes from water to fish muscles, kidneys, and livers increased owing to the reservoir ice-cover formation date advancing by 13.0%, 77.1%, and 61.0%, respectively. This work provides a modeling tool for investigating the fate and mass transfer flux of antibiotics in biological and environmental phases in seasonal ice-sealed reservoirs.

Carrier-Free Binary Self-Assembled Nanomedicines Originated from Traditional Herb Medicine with Multifunction to Accelerate MRSA-Infected Wound Healing by Antibacterial, Anti-Inflammation and Promoting Angiogenesis

Background

Deaths from bacterial infections have risen year by year. This trend is further aggravated as the overuse antibiotics and the bacterial resistance to all known antibacterial agents. Therefore, new therapeutic alternatives are urgently needed.

Methods

Enlightenment the combination usage of traditional herb medicine, one carrier-free binary nanoparticles (GA-BBR NPs) was discovered, which was self-assembled from gallic acid and berberine through electrostatic interaction, π-π stacking and hydrophobic interaction; and it could be successfully prepared by a green, cost-effective and "one-pot" preparation process.

Results

The nanoparticles exhibited strong antibacterial activity and biofilm removal ability against multidrug-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) by downregulating mRNA expression of rpsF, rplC, rplN, rplX, rpsC, rpmC and rpsH to block bacterial translation mechanisms in vitro and in vivo, and it had well anti-inflammatory activity and a promising role in promoting angiogenesis to accelerate the wound healing on MRSA-infected wounds model in vivo. Additionally, the nanoparticles displayed well biocompatibility without cytotoxicity, hemolytic activity, and tissue or organ toxicity.

Conclusion

GA-BBR NPs originated from the drug combination has potential clinical transformation value, and this study provides a new idea for the design of carrier-free nanomedicine derived from natural herbals.

Trophodynamic of endocrine disrupting compounds in the aquatic food webs: Association with hydrophobicity and biota metabolic rate

Increasing concentration of endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) are released into the aquatic environment, resulting in irreversible effects on the endocrine and reproductive systems of biota. How the liver enzymes affect metabolic rate of these compounds and thus their structure-related trophic transfer in aquatic food webs remains largely unknown. In this study, the concentrations of seven common EDCs were measured in 15 species of fish, 7 invertebrate species and plankton collected from Liuxi River to Pearl River, South China. The mean ΣEDC concentrations generally were found to increase as follows: plankton (29.59 ng g^-1 dw) < invertebrate species (50.69 ng g^-1 dw) < fish (122.56 ng g^-1 dw), with 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) and bisphenol S (BPS) as the predominant components. Trophic magnification factors (TMFs) values were >1.0 ranged from 1.30 (BPS) to 4.07 (4-NP), indicating trophic magnification potential. Measurement of metabolism and activities of microsomal CYP450 enzymes were performed in the fish liver microsomes of Hypophthalmichthys molitrix ([TL] = 2.27), Cirrhinus mrigala (TL = 3.87) and Odontamblyopus rubicundus (TL = 4.73). TMFs were significantly negatively correlated with the obtained in vitro biotransformation clearance rates (CL _{in vitro}) of EDCs and CYP450 enzymes activities. A multiple linear regression model indicated that biotransformation clearance is a more powerful predictor for TMFs than the hydrophobicity (Kow) to drive changes in the studied aquatic food web trophodynamics.

Contamination of planktonic food webs in the Mediterranean Sea: Setting the frame for the MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE oceanographic cruise (spring 2019)

This paper looks at experiential feedback and the technical and scientific challenges tied to the MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE cruise that took place in the Mediterranean Sea in spring 2019. This cruise proposes an innovative approach to investigate the accumulation and transfer of inorganic and organic contaminants within the planktonic food webs. We present detailed information on how the cruise worked, including 1) the cruise track and sampling stations, 2) the overall strategy, based mainly on the collection of plankton, suspended particles and water at the deep chlorophyll maximum, and the separation of these particles and planktonic organisms into various size fractions, as well as the collection of atmospheric deposition, 3) the operations performed and material used at each station, and 4) the sequence of operations and main parameters analysed. The paper also provides the main environmental conditions that were prevailing during the campaign. Lastly, we present the types of articles produced based on work completed by the cruise that are part of this special issue.

Waste-Based Ceramsite for the Efficient Removal of Ciprofloxacin in Aqueous Solutions

Ciprofloxacin (CIP), a compound with bioaccumulation toxicity and antibiotic resistance, is frequently detected in water at alarming concentrations, which is becoming an increasing concern. In this study, a low-cost ceramsite was developed from industrial solid wastes through sintering to remove CIP from wastewater. The effects of adsorbent dosage, initial pH, contact time, initial CIP concentration, and temperature were explored. More than 99% of CIP (20-60 mg/L) was removed at around pH 2-4 by the ceramsite. The kinetic data fitted well with the pseudo-second-order model, revealing that chemisorption was the main rate-determining step. The isotherm data was better described by the Freundlich model, suggesting that CIP was removed by the formation of multiple layers on the heterogeneous surface. Moreover, the removal efficiency was practically higher than 95% during five regeneration cycles, when different regeneration methods were used, including calcination, HCl, and NaOH washing, indicating that the ceramsite exhibited outstanding reusability in removing CIP. The primary mechanism of CIP removal by the ceramsite was found to be the synergism of adsorption and flocculation, both of which depended on the release of Ca²⁺ from the ceramsite. In addition, strong Ca-CIP complexes could be formed through surface complexation and metal cation bridging between Ca²⁺ and different functional groups in CIP.

The Source and Distribution of Tetracycline Antibiotics in China: A Review

In recent years, antibiotics have been listed as a new class of environmental pollutants. Tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) used in human medical treatment, animal husbandry and agricultural production are the most widely used antibiotics. Due to their wide range of activities and low cost, their annual consumption is increasing. TCs cannot be completely metabolized by humans and animals. They can be abused or overused, causing the continuous accumulation of TCs in the ecological environment and potential negative effects on non-target organisms. These TCs may spread into the food chain and pose a serious threat to human health and the ecology. Based on the Chinese environment, the residues of TCs in feces, sewage, sludge, soil and water were comprehensively summarized, as well as the potential transmission capacity of air. This paper collected the concentrations of TCs in different media in the Chinese environment, contributing to the collection of a TC pollutant database in China, and facilitating the monitoring and treatment of pollutants in the future.

Presence of pharmaceuticals and bacterial resistance genes in river epilithic biofilms exposed to intense agricultural and urban pressure

The continuous discharge of pharmaceutical compounds into the aquatic environment has raised concerns over the contamination of water resources. Urban activities and intensive animal breeding are important sources of contamination. The accumulation of antibiotics may lead to the transfer or alternatively maintain the presence of resistance genes in natural microbial communities existing in epilithic biofilms. The objective of this study was to evaluate the pharmaceutical contamination levels and the presence of resistance genes in biofilms from a South Brazilian watershed. The Guaporé watershed exhibits a high diversity of land use, including agricultural and urban areas with differing levels of anthropogenic pressure. Seventeen sites along the Guaporé watershed were monitored. Biofilm samples were collected in two seasons (winter and summer), and the pharmaceutical concentration and quantity of resistance genes were analyzed. All monitored sites were contaminated with pharmaceuticals. Agricultural activities contribute through transferring pharmaceuticals derived from the application of animal waste to agricultural fields. The most contaminated site (pharmaceuticals and bacterial resistance genes) was located in an urban area exposed to high pressure. Decreases in the contamination of biofilms were also observed, exemplifying processes of natural attenuation in the watershed. The quality of the biofilms sampled throughout the watershed served as a useful tool to understand and monitor environmental pollution.

Distribution of antibiotic resistance genes in the sediments of Erhai Lake, Yunnan-Kweichow Plateau, China: Their linear relations with nonpoint source pollution discharges from 26 tributaries

Erhai Lake, a typical plateau deep water lake, experienced long-term nonpoint source (NPS) pollution discharge from 26 tributaries, which significantly affected the abundance and spread of resistance genes. In this study, 25 antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), classified into six types, and NPS pollution discharges were investigated throughout around the Erhai basin. FCA (mexF) and sulfonamide resistance genes (sul1, sul2 and sul3) were the most common. Although the absolute overall abundance of ARGs there was low so far, the individual gene like sulfonamide resistance gene was high. Regression analysis using an ordinary least squares model (OLS) showed that the discharge of NPS pollution into Erhai Lake would have an obvious effect on the distribution of ARGs. And the relations between them were linear. Concretely speaking, the total nitrogen (TN) pollution input from tributaries could significantly correlated with the increasing of ARG abundance, while the total phosphorus (TP) pollution input showed the opposite correlation, and ultimately affect the distribution of ARGs. Moreover, the effect of TP on ARG distribution was more significant than TN. This study provides a geographical profile of ARG distribution in a subtropical deep lake on Yunnan-Kweichow Plateau. The results are beneficial for predicting the distribution characteristics of ARGs and controlling their pollution in plateau lakes.

Microalgae-based wastewater treatment: Mechanisms, challenges, recent advances, and future prospects

The rapid expansion of both the global economy and the human population has led to a shortage of water resources suitable for direct human consumption. As a result, water remediation will inexorably become the primary focus on a global scale. Microalgae can be grown in various types of wastewaters (WW). They have a high potential to remove contaminants from the effluents of industries and urban areas. This review focuses on recent advances on WW remediation through microalgae cultivation. Attention has already been paid to microalgae-based wastewater treatment (WWT) due to its low energy requirements, the strong ability of microalgae to thrive under diverse environmental conditions, and the potential to transform WW nutrients into high-value compounds. It turned out that microalgae-based WWT is an economical and sustainable solution. Moreover, different types of toxins are removed by microalgae through biosorption, bioaccumulation, and biodegradation processes. Examples are toxins from agricultural runoffs and textile and pharmaceutical industrial effluents. Microalgae have the potential to mitigate carbon dioxide and make use of the micronutrients that are present in the effluents. This review paper highlights the application of microalgae in WW remediation and the remediation of diverse types of pollutants commonly present in WW through different mechanisms, simultaneous resource recovery, and efficient microalgae-based co-culturing systems along with bottlenecks and prospects.

An Overview of Analytical Methods to Determine Pharmaceutical Active Compounds in Aquatic Organisms

There is increasing scientific evidence that some pharmaceuticals are present in the marine ecosystems at concentrations that may cause adverse effects on the organisms that inhabit them. At present, there is still very little scientific literature on the (bio)accumulation of these compounds in different species, let alone on the relationship between the presence of these compounds and the adverse effects they produce. However, attempts have been made to optimize and validate analytical methods for the determination of residues of pharmaceuticals in marine biota by studying the stages of sample treatment, sample clean-up and subsequent analysis. The proposed bibliographic review includes a summary of the most commonly techniques, and its analytical features, proposed to determine pharmaceutical compounds in aquatic organisms at different levels of the trophic chain in the last 10 years.

Effects of Trophic Level and Land Use on the Variation of Animal Antibiotic Resistome in the Soil Food Web

In recent years, it has been increasingly recognized that soil animals are hidden reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and play a vital role in spreading ARGs in soil ecosystems. However, little is known about the variation of ARGs among different animals in the soil food web and effects of trophic levels and land uses on them. We characterized the antibiotic resistomes of 495 soil animal samples collected from six regions across China, including two different land uses. A total of 265 ARGs were detected in all animal samples, and relative abundances of ARGs in animals were significantly higher than in soils. In addition, significant differences in ARGs were observed among different animal groups. Twelve common ARGs were identified among all animal groups, accounting for 17.4% of total ARGs abundance. A positive and significant correlation was found between δ¹⁵N values (trophic level) and total ARGs abundance in animals. The relative abundance of ARGs in the soil food web from arable land was higher than forest land. Changes in soil antibiotics may indirectly affect animal resistome by altering soil ARGs. This study suggests that the risk of ARGs spreading through the food web is greater in arable than in forest ecosystems.

Antibiotic resistance in aquaculture and aquatic organisms: a review of current nanotechnology applications for sustainable management

Aquaculture has emerged as one of the world's fastest-growing food industries in recent years, helping food security and boosting global economic status. The indiscriminate disposal of untreated or improperly managed waste and effluents from different sources including production plants, food processing sectors, and healthcare sectors release various contaminants such as bioactive compounds and unmetabolized antibiotics, and antibiotic-resistant organisms into the environment. These emerging contaminants (ECs), especially antibiotics, have the potential to pollute the environment, particularly the aquatic ecosystem due to their widespread use in aquaculture, leading to various toxicological effects on aquatic organisms as well as long-term persistence in the environment. However, various forms of nanotechnology-based technologies are now being explored to assist other remediation technologies to boost productivity, efficiency, and sustainability. In this review, we critically highlighted several ecofriendly nanotechnological methods including nanodrug and vaccine delivery, nanoformulations, and nanosensor for their antimicrobial effects in aquaculture and aquatic organisms, potential public health risks associated with nanoparticles, and their mitigation measures for sustainable management.

Bioavailability and trophic magnification of antibiotics in aquatic food webs of Pearl River, China: Influence of physicochemical characteristics and biotransformation

Information on trophodynamics of antibiotics and subsequent relationships to antibiotic metabolism in river ecosystem is still unavailable, limiting the evaluation of their bioaccumulation and trophodynamics in aquatic food webs. In the present study, concentrations and relative abundance of 11 antibiotics were investigated in surface water, sediment and 22 aquatic taxa (e.g., fish, invertebrates and plankton) from Pearl River, South China. The logarithmic bioaccumulation factors (log BAFs) of antibiotics generally showed positive relationships with their log D (pH-adjusted log Kow), implying that their bioaccumulation of ionizable antibiotics depends on it is in an ionized form. Higher BAFs of antibiotics in benthic biota were observed than those in fish, indicating that sediment ingestion was a possible route of antibiotic exposure. The logarithmic biota-sediment accumulation factors (log BSAFs) of benthic biota increased when log D increased from -4.79 to -0.01, but declined thereafter. Trophodynamics of antibiotics was investigated, and intrinsic clearance were measured in liver microsomes of Tilapia zillii (trophic level [TL]: 2.5), Anabas testudineu (TL: 3.9), and Coilia grayi (TL: 5.0). Only ciprofloxacin (CFX) showed significant trophic magnification (Trophic Magnification Factor [TMF] = 1.95), and a higher metabolism rate in lower trophic levels suggest that metabolic biotransformation play a significant role in driving biomagnification of antibiotics.

The difference of trophic magnification factors of Quinolones antibiotics (QNs) between pelagic and benthic foodwebs in a shallow lake: importance of carbon and nitrogen sources

Feeding habitat and carbon source play critical roles in certain the trophic transfer and bioaccumulation ability of chemicals in aquatic ecosystems. However, it remains largely unknown how these factors affect the trophic magnification factors (TMFs) of antibiotics in lake ecosystem. This study compared the differences of TMFs for Quinolones (QNs) antibiotics and carbon/nitrogen sources between pelagic foodweb (PFW, 11 species) and benthic foodweb (BFW, 14 species) in Baiyangdian Lake, Northern China. δ¹³C showed higher values in BFW, while δ¹⁵N appeared higher values in PFW. The mean percentage of pelagic nitrogen source (PNS) was higher than benthic nitrogen source (BNS), while the mean percentages of pelagic carbon source (PCS) and benthic carbon source (BCS) were approximately equal. Relatively high concentrations of enrofloxacin (ENR), flumequine (FLU), norfloxacin (NOR), and ofloxacin (OFL) were detected, and the total concentrations of QNs were 27.73-126.4 ng/g dw in PFW, while 23.49-121.3 ng/g dw in BFW. ENR and NOR appeared trophic magnification, while FLU and OFL exhibited trophic dilution. The TMFs of these QNs in PFW were significantly higher than in BFW. The concentration of QNs in biological samples were significantly positive correlation with δ¹⁵N, while negative correlated with δ¹³C. The TMFs for FLU and OFL were positively correlated with PCS/PNS, while negatively correlated with BCS/BNS. The opposite was true for NOR and ENR. Chitin-biocalcium as a novel superior composite for ciprofloxacin removal: Synergism of adsorption and flocculation

The ubiquitous present antibiotics in aquatic environment is attracting increasing concern due to the dual problems of bioaccumulation toxicity and antibiotic resistance. In this study, a low-cost chitin-biocalcium (CC) composite was developed by a facile alkali activation process from shell waste for typical antibiotics ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal. Response surface methodology (RSM) was utilized to optimize synthesis methodology. The optimized CC products featured superior CIP removal capacity of 2432 mg/g at 25 °C (adsorption combined with flocculation), rapid adsorption kinetics, high removal efficiency (95.58%) and wide pH adaptability (under pH range 4.0-10.0). The functional groups in chitin and high content of biocalcium (Ca²⁺) endowed CC abundant active sites. The kinetic experimental data was fitted well by pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion model at different concentrations, revealing the removal was controlled by chemisorption and mass transport step. From the macroscopic aspect, flocs were produced with the increase of CIP concentration during the reaction, adsorption combined with flocculation were related to the CIP removal. From the microcosmic aspect, the superior removal performance was attributed to cation bridging, cation complexation among biocalcium-CIP and hydrogen bond between functional groups of chitin and CIP.

Water reuse for aquaculture: Comparative removal efficacy and aquatic hazard reduction of pharmaceuticals by a pond treatment system during a one year study

Aquaculture is increasing at the global scale, and beneficial reuse of wastewater is becoming crucial in some regions. Here we selected a unique tertiary treatment system for study over a one-year period. This experimental ecosystem-based approach to effluent management included a treated wastewater pond (TWP), which receives 100% effluent from a wastewater treatment plant, and an aquaculture pond (AP) that receives treated water from the TWP for fish production. We examined the fate of a wide range of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in this TWP-AP system and a control pond fed by river water using traditional grab sampling and passive samplers. We then employed probabilistic approaches to examine exposure hazards. Telmisartan, carbamazepine, diclofenac and venlafaxine, exceeded ecotoxicological predicted no effect concentrations in influent wastewater to the TWP, but these water quality hazards were consistently reduced following treatment in the TWP-AP system. In addition, both grab and passive sampling approaches resulted in similar occurrence patterns of studied compounds, which highlights the potential of POCIS use for water monitoring. Based on the approach taken here, the TWP-AP system appears useful as a tertiary treatment step to reduce PhACs and decrease ecotoxicological and antibiotic resistance water quality hazards prior to beneficial reuse in aquaculture.

Microalgae-based technology for antibiotics removal: From mechanisms to application of innovational hybrid systems

Antibiotics contamination is an emerging environmental concern, owing to its potential risks to ecosystems and human health. Microalgae-based technology has been widely reported as a promising alternative to conventional wastewater treatment, since it is a solar-power driven, ecologically friendly, cost-effective, and sustainable reclamation strategy. This review provides fundamental insights into the major mechanisms underpinning microalgae-based antibiotics removal, including bioadsorption, bioaccumulation, and biodegradation. The critical role of extracellular polymeric substances on bioadsorption and extracellular biodegradation of antibiotics are also covered. Moreover, this review sheds light on the important factors affecting the removal of antibiotics by microalgae, and summarizes several novel approaches to improve the removal efficiency, including acclimation, co-metabolism and microbial consortium. Besides, hybrid systems (such as, microalgae-based technologies combined with the conventional activated sludge, advanced oxidation processes, constructed wetlands, and microbial fuel cells), and genetic engineering are also recommended, which will be feasible for enhanced removal of antibiotics. Finally, this review also highlights the need for further studies aimed at optimizing microalgae-based technology, with emphasis on improving performance and expanding its application in large-scale settings, especially in terms of technical, environmental-friendly and economically competitiveness. Overall, this review summarizes current understanding on microalgae-based technologies for removal of antibiotics and outlines future research directions.

Pilot-scale constructed bypass channel for urban river restoration: the remedial efficiency and the variance in biodiversity

Like the blood vessels of the cities, urban rivers play a significant role on maintaining the cities' sustainable development. In addition to the prevention of pollutants discharge and improving the river water quality, the restoration of the urban rivers' ecosystem should be well concerned. To fill this gap, a pilot-scale study with constructed bypass channel (CBC) was conducted. The pollutants reduction by the aquatic plants of the CBC was evaluated, and the similarities/differences of the aquatic biodiversity between the CBC and the natural rivers were analyzed. The results indicated that the mean removal efficiency of TP, NH₃-N, TN, and COD by the CBC was 66%, 60%, 52%, and 36%, respectively. Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, and Cyanophyta were the dominant phytoplankton phyla in the CBC which was in accordance with the studies conducted in the Dongjiang River and the Pearl River. During the study period of about 6 months, the population density and the biomass of the phytoplankton and the zooplankton increased over time. The quality of the influent dominated the aquatic organisms' diversity of the CBC. N-element dominated not only the phytoplankton variability, but also the bacterial species of the CBC. The timber pile and the submerged plant root soil were more suitable for the growth of the functional bacteria; thus, the construction of the river restoration infrastructures should avoid using large-scale cement materials. Overall, the study would improve the understanding of urban river restoration practice and provide guidance for future restoration practice especially from the aquatic ecological perspectives.

The fate of sulfonamides in the process of phytoremediation in hydroponics

Phytoremediation has been proven to be an alternative in-situ treatment technique for sulfonamide polluted wastewater. However, the fate of sulfonamides in the phytoremediation process of multiple sulfonamides coexistence is unclear. Therefore, the possibility and mechanism of phytoremediation of ten sulfonamides by different wetland plants through hydroponics were investigated in this study. The phytoremediation rates of Σsulfonamides by different wetland plants were from 44.5% to 56.9%. Mass balance analysis showed that rhizosphere biodegradation (90.2% - 92.2%) dominated the phytoremediation of Σsulfonamides, while hydrolysis (7.63% - 8.95%) and plant uptake (0.05% - 0.17%) accounted for a small proportion. It is worth mentioning that the dissipation of the target sulfonamides in the hydroponic system followed the first-order reaction kinetic model, with half-lives of 13.3 d to 53.3 d, which are close to or even lower than that of aerobic biodegradation in river water, sediment, and piggery wastewater. Six of the ten spiked sulfonamides were detected in plant samples demonstrated that the selective uptake of plants under the coexistence of multiple sulfonamides. The distribution of sulfonamides (concentrations and uptake amounts) in plant tissues followed the sequence of root > stem > leaf in this study, but the distribution in stems and leaves needs further study. The uptake and rhizosphere biodegradation of Cyperus papyrus to sulfonamides are optimally resulting that its phytoremediation rate is significantly higher than other plants (p < 0.05), which indicates that plant species is one of the key factors affecting the phytoremediation efficiency of sulfonamides. These findings verify the feasibility of phytoremediation of sulfonamides, and provide new insights into the fate of sulfonamides in the process of phytoremediation.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products in the seawater around a typical subtropical tourist city of China and associated ecological risk

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in the sea area surrounding a densely populated tourist city in southeastern China were investigated. In total, 32 PPCP pollutants classified into 23 categories were detected. Different spatial distribution patterns of PPCPs indicated possible contamination from runoff and multiple local sources. The labile-to-conservative ratios of PPCPs showed the influence of untreated domestic sewage. In addition, increased concentrations of ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, and erythromycin around aquaculture farms imply that aquaculture cannot be neglected as a source. The concentrations of oxytetracycline, ranitidine, ciprofloxacin, miconazole, and sulfamethizole were higher in the wet season than those in the dry season, and the difference in pharmaceutical consumption was suspected to be the main driving factor of this seasonal variation. The risk quotients calculated with the maximum concentrations of miconazole, triclosan, dehydronifedipine, and triclocarban exceeded 0.1, indicating potential moderate or high risks. Antibacterial agents in daily chemicals and azole broad-spectrum antifungals were associated with the highest risks in this study; this might be another significant pollution characteristic in the sea area around this subtropical tourist city.

The biological pump effects of phytoplankton on the occurrence and benthic bioaccumulation of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in a hypereutrophic lake

The distribution of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in eutrophic ecosystems has been widely studied, but how phytoplankton blooms affect their occurrence and benthic bioaccumulation is poorly understood. To fill this knowledge gap, the biological pump effects of phytoplankton on the fate of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments and benthos (Corbicula fluminea) from Lake Taihu, a hypereutrophic lake in China, were identified. The spatial-temporal distribution of HOCs suggests that higher phytoplankton biomass, coupled with sediment organic matter (SOM) content, greatly increased the concentration of HOCs in sediments in both winter and summer seasons. This could be attributed to the biological pump effects sequestering more HOCs from water to sediments with settling phytoplankton, especially during the summer. The biological pump effects further promoted the uptake of sediment-bound HOCs by benthos. The significant positive relationships between concentrations of HOCs in sediments and benthos were observed during the winter dormancy phase of benthos. Furthermore, the benthic bioaccumulation of HOCs could be strengthened by phytoplankton, due to their contribution to SOM and the following increased bioavailability of HOCs in sediments. Further research is needed to elucidate the phytoplankton biological pump effects on the fate of HOCs in benthic food chain, especially for hypereutrophic waters.

Ultra-durable, multi-template molecularly imprinted polymers for ultrasensitive monitoring and multicomponent quantification of trace sulfa antibiotics

Traditional analysis methods are susceptible to interference caused by the complexity of sample matrices, and detector surface fouling arising from nonspecific adsorption of microorganisms (in biological samples) which leads in particular to a gradual loss of sensitivity. Imprinted materials can be used to effectively reduce interference originating in the matrices. However, the poor reproducibility and multicomponent quantification of trace antibiotics represent significant challenges to the detection process. Meanwhile, the high biological risk presented by bacterial antibiotic immunity and the persistence of antibiotics in foodstuffs, especially meat, both caused by the overuse of sulfonamide antibiotics, remain urgent issues. Here, we present the first example of a method for the accurate quantification of trace sulfa antibiotics (SAs) based on multi-template imprinted polymers (MMIPs). Levels of multiple SAs have been simultaneously successfully quantified by applying MMIP extraction coupled with UPLC-MS/MS analysis. This method shows excellent linearity of detection in the range of 0.1-500 μg L^-1, and ultrasensitivity with low limits of detection of 0.03 μg L^-1. The maximum SA residue recovered from sample tissues by using MMIPs was 5.48 μg g^-1. MMIP-coupled UPLC-MS/MS quantification of SAs is an accurate and repeatable method for the monitoring of SA accumulation in mouse tissue samples. It also provides an effective strategy for the tracking and quantification of drugs in other biological samples.

Multimedia distribution and trophic transfer of PPCPs in the middle and lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River

The increasing human presence is having an impact on plateau ecosystems, but the special environment and lack of data make it difficult to assess the real ecological risks of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in the river of plateau. The occurrence, distribution and trophic transfer of nineteen PPCPs were investigated in the middle and lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River on the Tibetan Plateau. All the targeted PPCPs were detected in filtrated water, and seventeen PPCPs were detected in the colloid, sediment and suspended particulate matter (SPM). The distribution coefficients of colloid-infiltration water (IFW) were 1-2 orders of magnitude larger than those in the SPM-IFW, which were 1-2 orders of magnitude greater than those in the sediment-IFW. Colloids are sinks for PPCPs with up to 78.55% of the water being in the colloidal phase, in which important factors such as protein and protein-like substances are found. PPCPs in the rivers of the plateau showed high bioaccumulation ability. The fugacity-based bioaccumulation model was established and revealed that the fish in the Tibetan Plateau ingested PPCPs mainly through water instead of food and excreted them mainly through metabolism. In addition, the trophic dilution effect in the food web was observed with trophic magnification factors ranging from 0.06 to 0.22. The positive correlation between the K_d in the colloid-IFW and the bioaccumulation factors implied that natural colloids can not only regulate the behaviour of PPCPs in the environment, but also play an important role in bioaccumulation, which may affect the scientific nature of biological risk assessment.

Impact of Phytoplankton Blooms on Concentrations of Antibiotics in Sediment and Snails in a Subtropical River, China

The present three-year field investigation on sediment in the eutrophic Pearl River in South China showed that concentrations of sulfonamides (SAs), fluoroquinolones (FQs), and macrolides (MLs) in the river areas where blooms occurred were 4.6, 2.4, and 3.4 times higher than those without blooms, respectively, but the respective concentrations of tetracycline (TC) and oxytetracycline (OTC) in the areas with blooms were 2.6 and 3.8 times lower than those without. Significant positive correlations were found between concentrations of chlorophyll a in water and most antibiotics in sediment. Further investigation in each season suggested that lower diffusion but higher sinking were possible reasons driving the burial of sulfapyridine (SPD), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and trimethoprim (TMP) in sediment from areas where blooms occurred, with burial rates up to 14.86, 48.58, and 52.19 g month^-1, respectively. Concentrations of TCs in both water and sediment were inversely correlated with phytoplankton biomass, which might be related to the enhanced biodegradation capacity of bacteria caused by phytoplankton blooms. Phytoplankton also affected concentrations of antibiotics in the snail, Bellamya purificata, with higher values in March but lower values in September. The concentration of antibiotics in snails positively correlated with that in sediment when snails were dormant but with antibiotics in water after dormancy.

Antibiotics in a subtropical food web from the Beibu Gulf, South China: Occurrence, bioaccumulation and trophic transfer

Antibiotics are of particular concern because of their ubiquity in aquatic environment and long-term adverse effects on aquatic organisms and humans. However, there is no information about the bioaccumulation and trophic magnification of antibiotics in subtropical environments. In this study, we determined the concentrations of 22 antibiotics to investigate their occurrence, bioaccumulation and trophic magnification in a subtropical food web from the Beibu Gulf. The total concentrations of target antibiotics ranged from 52.94-77.76 ng/L in seawater, 9.69-15.43 ng/g dry weight (dw) in sediment, and 0.68-4.75 ng/g wet weight (ww) in marine organisms, respectively. Macrolides were the predominant antibiotics in water, while fluoroquinolones were more abundant in sediment and biota samples. The total concentrations of target antibiotics in examined marine taxa descended in the order: crustacean > cephalopod > fish, with antibiotic profiles displaying distinct difference among taxa. Log BAFs (bioaccumulation factor) for antibiotics in all organisms ranged from -0.50 for erythromycin-H₂O (ETM-H₂O) to 2.82 for sulfamonomethoxine (SMM). Significantly negative correlation was observed between the log D_ow and log BAF values (p < .05), indicating that log D_ow is a good predictor of antibiotics bioaccumulation potential in marine organisms. The trophic magnification factors (TMFs) for sulfadiazine (SDZ) and enoxacin (ENX) were greater than unity, suggesting the trophic magnification of these chemicals through the food web. In contrast, enrofloxacin (ENR), ciprofloxacin (CIX), ofloxacin (OFX), norfloxacin (NOX), ETM-H₂O and trimethoprim (TMP) were biodiluted in the food web from the Beibu Gulf. This study provides substantial information on the fate and trophic transfer of antibiotics in a subtropical marine ecosystem.

Distinct mechanisms underlying the assembly of microeukaryotic generalists and specialists in an anthropogenically impacted river

Microeukaryotic communities are sensitive to environmental changes; and are considered essential for microbial food webs and biogeochemical cycles. Therefore, understanding the community responses of microeukaryotes to environmental changes is of great ecological significance. Very little is known about the assembly mechanisms underlying the microeukaryotic communities, especially for the key ecological groups (e.g., habitat generalists/specialists) in the riverine ecosystems. Here, we employed 18S rDNA amplicon sequencing to study the assembly processes governing the microeukaryotic communities and their habitat generalists and specialists across three hydrological seasons in a subtropical river in China. The results showed that deterministic and stochastic processes jointly shaped the microeukaryotic communities, where the relative importance of stochastic processes decreased in the following order: wet > normal > dry seasons. However, deterministic processes played more important role in shaping the microeukaryotic communities than those of prokaryotes. Meanwhile, stochastic and deterministic processes were responsible for structuring the microeukaryotic habitat generalists and specialists, respectively. Generally, the pure effects of physicochemical factors on the microeukaryotic communities and their key ecological groups were ~ 1.7 folds than those of the micropollutants. However, several micropollutants (e.g., acetaminophen, benzophenone-3, bisphenol A, sulfadiazine, triclocarban and triclosan) were found to have a strong effect on the habitat specialists. Altogether, we suggested that the ecological responses of the riverine microeukaryotes to micropollutants may vary among species due to the intrinsic differences in their environmental plasticity.

Trace analysis of 28 antibiotics in plant tissues (root, stem, leaf and seed) by optimized QuEChERS pretreatment with UHPLC-MS/MS detection

Phytoremediation has proven to be an effective in-situ treatment technique for antibiotic contamination. Due to the immature methods of extracting multi-antibiotics in different plant tissues, the antibiotic absorption and transportation mechanism in the phytoremediation process has yet to be resolved. Therefore, an improved Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe (QuEChERS) pretreatment with ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) detection method for 28 antibiotics in different plant tissues (root, stem, leaf and seed) was developed in this study. The optimized method showed satisfactory performance with recoveries for most antibiotics ranging from 70% to 130% (except sulfadoxine with 138 ± 8.84% in root, sulfameter with 68.9 ± 1.87% and sulfadoxine with 141 ± 10.0% in seed). The limits of detection (LODs) of the target compounds in root, stem, leaf and seed were 0.04 ± 0.02 ~ 2.50 ± 1.14 ng/g, 0.05 ± 0.02 ~ 1.78 ± 0.42 ng/g, 0.06 ± 0.01 ~ 2.50 ± 0.14 ng/g and 0.13 ± 0.10 ~ 3.64 ± 0.74 ng/g, respectively. This developed method was successfully applied to the determination of antibiotics in different tissues of hydroponic wetland plants exposed to antibiotics-spiked water for one-month. Sixteen of 28 spiked antibiotics were detected in plant tissue samples. Overall, of these 16 antibiotics, all were detected in root samples (from < LOQ to 1478 ± 353 ng/g), eleven in stem samples (from < LOQ to 425 ± 47.0 ng/g), and nine in leaf samples (from < LOQ to 429 ± 84.5 ng/g). This developed analytical method provided a robust tool for the simultaneous screening and determination of antibiotics in different plant tissues.
