Spatiotemporal variations and the ecological risks of organophosphate esters in Laizhou Bay waters between 2019 and 2021: Implying the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on microplastic occurrence in aquatic environments: A three-year study in Taihu Lake Basin, China

The impact of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on microplastic (MP) occurrence in aquatic environments deserves an in-depth study. In this study, the occurrence of MPs and environmental flux of plastics before (2019) and during (2020 and 2021) the pandemic were comparatively investigated in various aquatic compartments in the Taihu Lake Basin in China. The field-based investigations from 2019 to 2021 for Taihu Lake have shown that, at the onset of the outbreak, the MP abundance declined at a rate of 62.3 %, but gradually recovered to the pre-pandemic level. However, the amount of plastics being released into aquatic environments showed a declining trend in 2020 and 2021 compared to those in 2019, with decrease rates of 13.7 % and 15.8 %, respectively. Characterization analysis of MP particles and source apportionment framework implied that while the contributions of tire abrasion and domestic waste to MP occurrence were depleted owing to the reduction in human activity during the pandemic, weathering and fragmentation of retained plastics contributed to the recovery of stored MPs. This study provides insights into the anthropogenic influences on MP occurrence, and supports policymakers in managing and controlling plastic contamination in large freshwater systems in the "new normal" phase.

Spatiotemporal distribution, risk levels, and transport variations in neonicotinoids and fipronil and its metabolites cross a river-to-sea continuum

Neonicotinoids (NEOs) and fipronil are widely used in pest control, but their spatiotemporal distribution and risk levels in the "river-estuary-bay" system remain unclear. Between 2018 and 2021, 148 water samples from rivers to inshore and offshore seawater in Laizhou Bay, China were collected to investigate the presence of eight NEOs and fipronil and its metabolites (FIPs). Significant seasonal variations in NEOs were observed under the influence of different cultivation practices and climatic conditions, with higher levels in the summer than in the spring. The average concentrations of total neonicotinoids (ΣNEOs) and ∑FIPs decreased from rivers (63.64 ng/L, 2.41 ng/L) to inshore (22.62 ng/L, 0.14 ng/L) and offshore (4.48 ng/L, 0.10 ng/L) seawater of Laizhou Bay. The average concentrations of ΣNEOs decreased by 85.3 % from 2018 to 2021. The predominant insecticides in the study area were acetamiprid, thiamethoxam, imidacloprid, and fipronil sulfone, with a gradual shift toward low-toxicity and environmentally friendly species over time. Influenced by agricultural intensity, ∑NEOs were mostly distributed in the Yellow River, Xiaoqing River, and their estuaries, where they pose chronic ecological risks. However, FIP exhibited high risk in certain rivers and sewage treatment plants owing to the use of animal repellents or landscape gardening insecticides. This study provides evidence of the transfer of NEOs and FIPs from rivers to the ocean and also clarifies their transition dynamics and changes in risk levels from rivers to oceans. Additionally, the study offers data support for identifying critical pesticide control areas.

Spatiotemporal distribution patterns and coupling effects of aquatic environmental factors in the dry-wet season over a decade from the Beibu Gulf, South China Sea

Since the 21st century, the Beibu Gulf area has been affected by increasing anthropogenic activities, which makes the coastal aquatic ecosystem extremely concerning. However, the comprehensive exploration and analysis of the long-term scale behavior change characteristics of various water quality environment factors is still limited. Through comprehensively detecting coastal surface water environmental behavior information from 33 locations in the Beibu Gulf from 2005 to 2015, we revealed and quantified mutual response characteristics and patterns of various environmental indicators. The main environmental pollution indicators (e.g., COD, NH4+, NO3-, and DIP) showed a gradual decrease in concentration from the coast to the offshore sea area, and significantly increases during the wet season. The semi-enclosed Maowei Sea exhibited the most prominent performance with significant differences compared to other regions in Beibu Gulf. The average Chlorophyll-a (Chla) content in the coastal area of the Beibu Gulf during the wet season was more than twice that of the dry season, yet the interaction pattern between Chla and environmental factors in the two seasons was opposite to its concentration behavior, accompanied by a closely significant relationship with thermohaline structure and the input of nitrogen and phosphorous nutrients. The multivariate statistical analysis results of total nutrient dynamics suggested that the Beibu Gulf was clearly divided into different regions in both dry and wet season clusters. The present study can provide a comprehensive perspective for the spatial and temporal migration patterns and transformation laws of coastal water environmental factor, which should contribute to improve the prevention countermeasure of nutrient pollution in coastal environment.

Evaluation and prediction of anthropogenic impacts on long-term multimedia fate and health risks of PFOS and PFOA in the Elbe River Basin

Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) have aroused great concern owing to their widespread occurrence and toxic effects. However, their long-term trends and multimedia fate remain largely unknown. Here, we investigate the spatiotemporal characteristics and periodic oscillations of PFOS and PFOA in the Elbe River between 2010 and 2021. Anthropogenic emission inventories and multimedia fugacity model were developed to analyse their historical and future transport fates and quantify related human risks in each medium for the three age groups. The results show that average PFOS and PFOA concentrations in the Elbe River were 4.08 and 3.41 ng/L, declining at the annual rate of 7.36% and 4.98% during the study period, respectively. Periodic oscillations of their concentrations and mass fluxes were most pronounced at 40-60 and 20-40 months. The multimedia fugacity model revealed that higher concentrations occurred in fish (PFOS: 14.29, PFOA: 0.40 ng/g), while the soil was their dominant sink (PFOS: 179, PFOA: 95 tons). The exchange flux between water and sediment was the dominant pathway in multimedia transportation (397 kg/year). Although PFOS and PFOA concentrations are projected to decrease by 22.41% and 50.08%, respectively, from 2021 to 2050, the hazard quotient of PFOS in fish is a low hazard. This study provides information for the assessment of PFOS and PFOA pollution in global watersheds and the development of related mitigation policies, such as banning fish predation in polluted rivers, to mitigate their risks.

Effects of COVID-19 on coastal and marine environments: Aggravated microplastic pollution, improved air quality, and future perspective

The COVID-19 pandemic during 2020-2023 has wrought adverse impacts on coastal and marine environments. This study conducts a comprehensive review of the collateral effects of COVID-19 on these ecosystems through literature review and bibliometric analysis. According to the output and citation analysis of these publications, researchers from the coastal countries in Asia, Europe, and America payed more attentions to this environmental issue than other continents. Specifically, India, China, and USA were the top three countries in the publications, with the proportion of 19.55%, 18.99%, and 12.01%, respectively. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly aggravated the plastic and microplastic pollution in coastal and marine environments by explosive production and unproper management of personal protective equipment (PPE). During the pandemic, the estimated mismanaged PPE waste ranged from 16.50 t/yr in Sweden to 250,371.39 t/yr in Indonesia. In addition, the PPE density ranged from 1.13 × 10-5 item/m2 to 2.79 item/m2 in the coastal regions worldwide, showing significant geographical variations. Besides, the emerging contaminants released from PPE into the coastal and marine environments cannot be neglected. The positive influence was that the COVID-19 lockdown worldwide reduced the release of air pollutants (e.g., fine particulate matter, NO2, CO, and SO2) and improved the air quality. The study also analyzed the relationships between sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the publications and revealed the dynamic changes of SDGs in different periods the COVID-19 pandemic. In conclusion, the air was cleaner due to the lockdown, but the coastal and marine contamination of plastic, microplastic, and emerging contaminants got worse during the COVID-19 pandemic. Last but not least, the study proposed four strategies to deal with the coastal and marine pollution caused by COVID-19, which were regular marine monitoring, performance of risk assessment, effective regulation of plastic wastes, and close international cooperation.

Occurrence of organophosphorus flame retardants in Xiangjiang River: Spatiotemporal variations, potential affecting factors, and source apportionment

The environmental occurrence of organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) is receiving increasing attention. However, their distribution in the Xiangjiang River, an important tributary in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, is still uncharacterized, and the potential factors influencing their distribution have not been adequately surveyed. In this study, the occurrence of OPFRs in the Xiangjiang River was comprehensively investigated from upstream to downstream seasonally. Fourteen OPFRs were detected in the sampling area, with a total concentration (∑OPFRs) ranging from 3.16 to 462 ng/L, among which tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate was identified as the primary pollutant (ND - 379 ng/L). Specifically, ∑OPFRs were significantly lower in the wet season than in the dry season, which may be due to the dilution effect of river flow and enhanced volatilization caused by higher water temperatures. Additionally, Changsha (during the dry season) and Zhuzhou (during the wet season) exhibited higher pollution levels than other cities. According to the Redundancy analysis, water quality parameters accounted for 35.7% of the variation in the occurrence of OPFRs, in which temperature, ammonia nitrogen content, dissolved oxygen, and chemical oxygen demand were identified as the potential influencing factors, accounting for 28.1%, 27.2%, 24.1%, and 11.5% of the total variation, respectively. The results of the Positive Matrix Factorization analysis revealed that transport and industrial emissions were the major sources of OPFRs in Xiangjiang River. In addition, there were no high-ecological risk cases for any individual OPFRs, although tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate and tributoxyethyl phosphate presented a low-to-medium risk level. And the results of mixture risk quotients indicated that medium-risk sites were concentrated in the Chang-Zhu-Tan region. This study enriches the global data of OPFRs pollution and contributes to the scientific management and control of pollution.

Occurrence, distribution, potential sources, and risks of organophosphate esters in fresh snow on Urumqi Glacier No. 1, eastern Tien Shan, China

Organophosphate esters (OPEs), extensively used as flame retardants, are widely detected in various regions and environments. The potential toxicity of OPEs has caused great concern in recent years. Based on the global distillation model, the Tien Shan glaciers, such as Urumqi Glacier No. 1, could be as a potential "sink" for OPEs. However, little is known about the concentration, distribution, potential sources, and ecological risks of OPEs in Tien Shan glaciers. In this study, fresh snow samples were collected at various altitudes on the Urumqi Glacier No. 1, eastern Tien Shan, China. The total concentrations of ten OPEs (Σ10OPEs) ranged from 116 to 152 ng/L. The most abundant OPE was tris-(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCIPP), contributing to 74 % of the total OPEs. Σ10OPEs, tri-n-butyl phosphate (TnBP), and TCIPP concentrations showed positive correlations with altitude, indicating the effect of cold condensation on OPEs deposition. Based on air mass back-trajectory analysis and principal component analysis, we found that emissions from both traffic and household products in indoor environment were the important sources, and OPEs on the Urumqi Glacier No. 1 might mainly originate from Europe. Our assessment also showed triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) posed a low ecological risk in snow. This is the first systematic study of OPEs on the Tien Shan glaciers.

Interannual variation and machine learning simulation of organophosphate esters in Taihu Lake

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are widespread in water bodies and have attracted public attention due to their hazards. This study investigated the presence of OPEs in surface water of Taihu Lake from 2012 and 2021-2022. The OPEs concentration was compared ten years ago and ten years later. Water and meteorological parameters were ranked using the random forest (RF) model, and OPEs concentration in lakes was simulated using selected parameters as inputs. The concentration of Σ7OPEs was higher ten years ago compared to ten years later. There was no significant seasonal difference in Σ7OPEs from 2021-2022, while the concentration of Σ7OPEs in 2012 was lower in summer than in other seasons. The spatial distribution of the two interannual Σ7OPEs exhibited a decreasing trend from the northwest region. The results of RF importance ranking and redundancy analysis showed that NH3-N, TN, TP, water temperature and relative humidity were the most influential factors affecting OPEs concentrations. RF models performed better for TnBP, as indicated by training R and test R values are excellent and relatively low errors. Our results demonstrated that machine learning models were useful in facilitating efficient monitoring and assessment of OPEs contamination in lakes.

Insights into electrochemical oxidation of tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP) in aquatic media: Degradation performance, mechanisms and toxicity changes of intermediate products

Tris (2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP) has gained significant attention due to its widespread presence and potential toxicity in the environment. In this study, the degradation of TBOEP in aquatic media was investigated using electrochemical oxidation technology. The anode Ti/SnO2-Sb/La-PbO2 demonstrated effective degradation performance, with a reaction constant (k) of 0.6927 min-1 and energy consumption of 1.24 kW h/m3 at 10 mA/cm2. CV tests, EPR tests, and quenching experiments confirmed that indirect degradation is the main degradation mechanism and ·OH radicals were the predominant reactive species, accounting for up to 93.8%. The presence of various factors, including Cl-, NO3-, HCO3- and humic acid (HA), inhibited the degradation of TBOEP, with the inhibitory effect dependent on the concentrations. A total of 13 intermediates were identified using UPLC-Orbitrap-MS/MS, and subsequent reactions led to their further degradation. Two main degradation pathways involving bond breaking, hydroxylation, and oxidation were proposed. Both Flow cytometry and the ECOSAR predictive model indicated that the intermediates exhibited lower toxic than the parent compound, resulting in a high detoxification rate of 95.9% for TBOEP. Although the impact of TBOEP on the phylum-level microbial community composition was found to be insignificant, substantial alterations in bacterial abundance were noted when examining the genus level. The dominant genus Methylotenera, representing 17.4% in the control group, decreased to 6.9% in the presence of TBOEP and slightly increased to 8.7% in the 4-min exposure group of degradation products. Electrochemical oxidation demonstrated its effectiveness for the degradation and detoxification of TBOEP in aqueous solutions, while it is essential to consider the potential impact of degradation products on sediment microbial communities.

Face mask derived micro(nano)plastics and organic compounds potentially induce threat to aquatic ecosystem security revealed by toxicogenomics-based assay

Micro(nano)plastics widely detected in aquatic environments have caused serious threat to water quality security. However, as a potential important source of micro(nano)plastics in surface water during the COVID-19 pandemic, the ecological risks of face mask waste to aquatic environments remain poorly understood. Herein, we comprehensively characterized the micro(nano)plastics and organic compounds released from four daily used face masks in aqueous environments and further evaluated their potential impacts on aquatic ecosystem safety by quantitative genotoxicity assay. Results from spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrum showed that plastic microfibers/particles (∼11%-83%) and leachable organic compounds (∼15%-87%) were dominantly emitted pollutants, which were significantly higher than nanoplastics (< ∼5%) based on mass of carbon. Additionally, a toxicogenomics approach using green fluorescence protein-fused whole-cell array revealed that membrane stress was the primary response upon the exposure to micro(nano)plastics, whereas the emitted organic chemicals were mainly responsible for DNA damage involving most of the DNA repair pathways (e.g., base/nucleotide excision repair, mismatch repair, double-strand break repair), implying their severe threat to membrane structure and DNA replication of microorganisms. Therefore, the persistent release of discarded face masks derived pollutants might exacerbate water quality and even adversely affect aquatic microbial functions. These findings would contribute to unraveling the potential effects of face mask waste on aquatic ecosystem security and highlight the necessity for more developed management regulations in face mask disposal.
