Multi-scale modeling of natural organic matter-heavy metal cations interactions: Aggregation and stabilization mechanisms

Molecular Dynamics Simulation of the Interaction within the Carboxymethyl Cellulose-Modified Montmorillonite Lamellae at Aggressive CuCl2 Concentrations

To elucidate the degradation mechanism of the CMC-modified MMT composite at aggressive Cu2+ concentrations, large scale molecular dynamics simulation was conducted for CuCl2 concentrations ranging from 0 to 800 mM. Both CMC and MMT followed the Langmuir isotherm for Cu2+ adsorption, and the adsorption capacity of CMC (8.75 mmol/g) was much higher than that of MMT (0.83 mmol/g). Despite the CMC mass ratio being only 4.1%, it adsorbed up to 34.3% of the total adsorbed Cu2+. The Cu2+ attraction ability hierarchy of oxygen-containing functional groups in the CMC is as follows: carboxylic oxygens > alcoholic oxygens > carbinolic oxygens > bridging oxygens > glucose oxygens. Carboxyls were the most effective in chelating and complexing with Cu2+, and they could be intentionally added in artificially synthesized polymer-MMT composites for Cu2+ containment. Formation of the Cu2+ cation bridge between CMC and MMT at aggressive CuCl2 concentrations contributed to the transition of CMC density distribution from unimodality to bimodality and enhanced resistance of polymer elution. As the CuCl2 concentration increased, the stoichiometric ratio between the chelated Cu2+ and carboxylic oxygens increased from 1:2 to 1:1, suggesting the evolution of the Cu2+ chelation mechanism.

Spatial distribution of sediment dissolved organic matter in oligotrophic lakes and its binding characteristics with Pb(II) and Cu(II)

Dissolved organic matter (DOM), the most active component in interstitial waters, determines the stability of heavy metals and secondary release in sediments. However, little is known about the composition and metal-binding patterns of DOM in interstitial water from oligotrophic lakes affected by different anthropogenic perturbations. Here, 18 interstitial water samples were prepared from sediments in agricultural, residential, tourist, and forest regions in an oligotrophic lake (Shengzhong Lake in Sichuan Province, China) watershed. Interstitial water quality and DOM composition, properties, and Cu(II)- and Pb(II)-binding characteristics were measured via physicochemical analysis, UV-vis spectroscopic, fluorescence excitation-emission matrix-parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC), and fluorescence titration methods. The DOM, which was produced mainly by microbial activities, had low molecular weights, humification degrees, and aromaticity. Based on EEM-PARAFAC results, the DOM was generally composed of tryptophan- (57.7%), terrestrial humic- (18.7%), microbial humic- (15.6%), and tyrosine-like (8.0%) substances. The DOM in the metal complexes was primarily composed of tryptophan-like substances, which accounted for ~42.6% of the DOM-Cu(II) complexes and ~72.0% of the DOM-Pb(II) complexes; however, microbial humic-like substances primarily contributed to the stability of DOM-Cu(II) (logKCu = 3.7-4.6) and DOM-Pb(II) (logKPb = 4.3-4.8). Water quality parameters did not significantly affect the stability of DOM-metal complexes. We demonstrated that the metal-binding patterns of DOM in interstitial water from oligotrophic lakes are highly dependent on microbial DOM composition and are affected by anthropogenic perturbations to a lesser extent.

Historical construction, quantitative source identification and risk assessment of heavy metals contamination in sediments from the Pearl River Estuary, South China

Historical reconstruction of heavy metals (HMs) contamination in sediments is a key for understanding the effects of anthropogenic stresses on water bodies and predicting the variation trends of environmental state. In this work, eighteen sediment cores from the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) were collected to determine concentrations and geochemical fractions of HMs. Then, their potential sources and the relative contributions during different time periods were quantitatively identified by integrating lead-210 (210Pb) radioisotope dating technique into positive matrix factorisation (PMF) method. Pollution levels and potential ecological risks (PERs) caused by HMs were accurately assessed by enrichment factors (EF) based on establishment of their geochemical baselines (GCBs) and multiparameter evaluation index (MPE). HMs concentrations generally showed a particle size- and organic matter-dependent distribution pattern. During the period of 1958-1978, HMs concentrations remained at low levels with agricultural activities and natural processes being identified as the predominant sources and averagely contributing >60%. Since the reform and opening-up in 1978, industrial and traffic factors become the primary anthropogenic sources of HMs (such as Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Cr, and Ni), averagely increasing from 22.1% to 28.1% and from 11.6% to 23.4%, respectively. Conversely, the contributions of agricultural and natural factors decreased from 37.0% to 28.5% and from 29.3% to 20.0%, respectively. Subsequently, implementation of environmental preservation policies was mainly responsible for the declining trend of HMs after 2010. Little enrichment of sediment Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr and Ni with EFs (0.15-1.43) was found in the PRE, whereas EFs of Cd (1.16-2.70) demonstrated a slight to moderate enrichment. MPE indices of Cu (50.7-252), Pb (52.0-147), Zn (35.5-130), Ni (19.6-71.5), Cr (14.2-68.8) and Cd (0-9.90) highlighted their potential ecological hazards due to their non-residual fractions and anthropogenic sources.

Soil-mustard revitalization via rice husk ash, a promising soil amendment material for sustainable management of heavy metal contamination in tropical ecosystem

Prolonged wastewater irrigation in agriculture has led to the accumulation of heavy metals in soil, endangering both the soil quality and food safety, thereby posing a potential threat to human health through the consumption of contaminated crops. The present study aimed to enhance the yield of mustard (Brassica juncea L. cv. Varuna and NRCHB 101) plants and stabilize heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Ni, Cu, and Zn) in wastewater-irrigated soil using rice husk ash (RHA), rice mill by-product, collected from Chandauli region of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, India. Results demonstrated significant improvements in growth, biomass, physiology, and yield of mustard plant with increasing RHA application in wastewater irrigated soil (p ≤ 0.05). Heavy metal accumulation in different parts of mustard plants decreased as RHA application rate increased. Applying RHA at 2% in soil proved to be most effective in reducing Cd, Cr, Ni, Cu, and Zn accumulation in seeds by 29%, 29.6%, 23.1%, 21.3% and 20.1%, respectively in Varuna and 30.1%, 21.4%, 11.1%, 12.1%, and 28.5%, respectively in NRCHB 101cultivars. The present findings showed that RHA amendment in wastewater irrigated soil had reduced bioaccumulation of Cd, Cr, Ni, Cu, and Zn and consequently their toxicity in cultivated mustard plants. A novel application of RHA is unveiled in this research, offering a promising solution to promote sustainable agriculture and to reduce heavy metal associated health risks within the soil-mustard system.

Deciphering DOM-metal binding using EEM-PARAFAC: Mechanisms, challenges, and perspectives

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a pivotal component of the biogeochemical cycles and can combine with metal ions through chelation or complexation. Understanding this process is crucial for tracing metal solubility, mobility, and bioavailability. Fluorescence excitation emission matrix (EEM) and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) has emerged as a popular tool in deciphering DOM-metal interactions. In this review, we primarily discuss the advantages of EEM-PARAFAC compared with other algorithms and its main limitations in studying DOM-metal binding, including restrictions in spectral considerations, mathematical assumptions, and experimental procedures, as well as how to overcome these constraints and shortcomings. We summarize the principles of EEM to uncover DOM-metal association, including why fluorescence gets quenched and some potential mechanisms that affect the accuracy of fluorescence quenching. Lastly, we review some significant and innovative research, including the application of 2D-COS in DOM-metal binding analysis, hoping to provide a fresh perspective for possible future hotspots of study. We argue the expansion of EEM applications to a broader range of areas related to natural organic matter. This extension would facilitate our exploration of the mobility and fate of metals in the environment.

Nanoscale Insights into the Interaction Mechanism Underlying the Adsorption and Retention of Heavy Metal Ions by Humic Acid

The mobility and distribution of heavy metal ions (HMs) in aquatic environments are significantly influenced by humic acid (HA), which is ubiquitous. A quantitative understanding of the interaction mechanism underlying the adsorption and retention of HMs by HA is of vital significance but remains elusive. Herein, the interaction mechanism between HA and different types of HMs (i.e., Cd(II), Pb(II), arsenate, and chromate) was quantitatively investigated at the nanoscale. Based on quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation tests, the adsorption capacities of Pb(II), Cd(II), As(V), and Cr(VI) ionic species on the HA surface were measured as ∼0.40, ∼0.25, ∼0.12, and ∼0.02 nmol cm-2, respectively. Atomic force microscopy force results showed that the presence of Pb(II)/Cd(II) cations suppressed the electrostatic double-layer repulsion during the approach of two HA surfaces and the adhesion energy during separation was considerably enhanced from ∼2.18 to ∼5.05/∼4.18 mJ m-2. Such strong adhesion stems from the synergistic metal-HA complexation and cation-π interaction, as evidenced by spectroscopic analysis and theoretical simulation. In contrast, As(V)/Cr(VI) oxo-anions could form only weak hydrogen bonds with HA, resulting in similar adhesion energies for HA-HA (∼2.18 mJ m-2) and HA-As(V)/Cr(VI)-HA systems (∼2.26/∼1.96 mJ m-2). This work provides nanoscale insights into quantitative HM-HA interactions, improving the understanding of HMs biogeochemical cycling.

The effects of microplastics on heavy metals bioavailability in soils: a meta-analysis

The combined pollution of heavy metals and microplastics is common in natural soil environments. Here, we collected 790 data sets from 39 studies to investigate the effects of microplastics on heavy metal bioavailability. The results showed that microplastics could increase the bioavailability of Cu, Pb, Cd, Fe, and Mn. The heavy metal bioavailability was positively correlated with microplastic size, soil sand concentration, and exposure time, but negatively correlated with soil pH and organic matter. The bioavailability of heavy metals can be promoted by microplastics of all shapes. Hydrolysable microplastics, which contain N, might have less influence. Furthermore, the size of microplastics and soil organic matter were positively correlated with the acid-soluble and reducible fractions of heavy metals, while the microplastic concentration, soil pH, and exposure time were positively correlated with the oxidizable fractions of heavy metals. The interaction detector results indicated that there was an interaction between microplastic characteristics, especially polymer types, and soil physicochemical indexes on the bioavailability of heavy metals. These findings suggested that long-term combined pollution of microplastics and heavy metals might increase heavy metal bioavailability in soils, thereby extending their migratory and hazardous range and bringing further risks to the environment and public health safety.
