Abstract
Pain catastrophizing is a prominent psychological factor that is strongly correlated with pain. Although the complex properties of pain catastrophizing vary across different pain phases, the contribution of chronic pain to its progression from a general trait to a higher state remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the neural mechanisms and degree to which pain catastrophizing is reinforced in the context of primary dysmenorrhea (PDM), one of the most prevalent gynaecological complaints experienced by women of reproductive age. Altogether, 29 women with moderate-to-severe PDM were included in this study. Arterial spin labelling was used to quantify the cerebral blood flow (CBF) in each participant in both the pain-free and painful phases. The pain catastrophizing scale (PCS) was completed in two phases, and the Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire was completed in the painful phase. Compared with pain catastrophizing in the pain-free phase (PCSpf), pain catastrophizing in the painful phase (PCSp) is higher and positively correlated with the composite factor of menstrual pain. CBF analysis indicated that the PCSp is positively associated with CBF in the frontal cortex, hippocampus and amygdala. The reinforcement of pain catastrophizing correlates with CBF in the prefrontal cortex. Specifically, the medial prefrontal cortex, which correlates with pain state, plays a crucial role in mediating the reinforcing effect of pain in the PCSp. These results promote the mechanical comprehension of pain catastrophizing management in individuals with chronic pain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anxiety symptoms and poor sleep quality are common in women. The role of sex hormones, particularly progesterone, in anxiety and sleep quality in women is understudied. Measurement of hair progesterone concentrations (HPC) is a promising method to investigate the effects of progesterone on anxiety symptoms and sleep quality in women. OBJECTIVES We analysed sociodemographic, hair-related, and clinical factors associated with HPC and investigated the association between HPC and anxiety severity and sleep quality in a sample of 159 South African women (mean age: 46.5 years; range: 18-79 years). METHODS Data were obtained from control participants from the SHARED ROOTS study. HPC were determined using an established liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method. Unadjusted and adjusted multiple linear regression models were used to investigate whether sleep quality, measured with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and anxiety, measured with the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), were associated with HPC. Significant sociodemographic, hair-related, and clinical factors were adjusted for. RESULTS HPC was significantly associated with age, duration of sample storage, hormonal treatment, postmenopausal status, and the number of different types of trauma exposures in adjusted models. Neither anxiety severity nor sleep quality was significantly associated with HPC. CONCLUSIONS Certain demographic, hair related, and clinical factors were associated with HPC and need to be considered in future research using HPC. Although anxiety and sleep were not associated with HPC, greater trauma exposure was associated with higher HPC, suggesting an association between severe stress and hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis functioning.

Abstract
Neuroimaging research has identified significant effects of oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) on brain networks. A wide variety of approaches have been employed, largely in observational samples, with few converging results. This study therefore was designed to test for replication and extend this previous work using a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial of the effects of OCPs on brain networks. Using functional MRI, we focused on brain regions identified in prior studies. Our analyses did not strictly replicate previously reported effects of OCPs on functional connectivity. Exploratory analyses suggested that traditional seed-based approaches may miss broader, network-level effects of OCPs on brain circuits. We applied data-driven, multivariate techniques to assess these network-level changes, A deeper understanding of neural effects of OCPs can be important in helping patients make informed decisions regarding contraception, mitigating unwanted side effects. Such information can also identify potentially confounding effects of OCPs in other neuroimaging investigations.

Abstract
In clinical practice, the use of exogenous progesterone (Pro) is often required in assisted reproduction programs due to reduced levels of the hormone and the risk of miscarriage. Exposure to the hormone reduces anxiety in rodents, but the long-term effects of prenatal exposure in adult offspring are unknown. Therefore, the present study was designed to investigate the effect of prenatal Pro treatment on anxiety- and depression-like behavior and the effect on plasma, hippocampal corticosterone (CORT) and hippocampal progesterone receptor (PR) in young adult male and female rat offspring. The behavioral responses of offspring of both sexes were tested in the open field, and the elevated plus maze tests, and for depressive-like behavior in the sucrose preference test, the forced swimming test and the splash test. CORT levels and PR expression were measured by ELISA. The results indicate that prenatal Pro exposure at low and high doses (10 and 50 mg kg-1, s.c. during G0-G10) induces anxiogenic and depressive-like effects compared to vehicle-treated controls, which are associated with high plasma and hippocampal CORT levels and upregulated hippocampal PR in male and female adult offspring. Our results demonstrate that prenatal Pro exposure has detrimental effects on the emotional status of male and female adult offspring, which may be associated with long-term changes in hormonal homeostasis.

Abstract
PCOS is characterized by ovarian hyperandrogenism and insulin resistance (IR), which give rise to symptoms of hyperandrogenism and central obesity, which in turn may cause depression, lower self-esteem, and deteriorate coping strategies in stressful situations. THE PURPOSE to examine the mental condition, self-esteem, and ways of coping with stress in women with PCOS compared to age and BMI-matched healthy controls and to correlate them with clinical and laboratory hyperandrogenism, central obesity, and IR. METHODS 42 women with PCOS and 39 controls were assessed for the above-mentioned psychological measures and correlated with serum hormonal and metabolic parameters. RESULTS Compared to controls, women with PCOS had more symptoms of depression (p = 0.026), a higher level of tension induction (p = 0.032), were more prone to alcohol consumption (p = 0.015), and were less likely to use the strategy of active coping in stressful situations (p = 0.014) and to seek instrumental (p = 0.048) and emotional support (p = 0.043). The presence of hirsutism correlated negatively with the level of emotional induction (R = -0.32, p < 0.05), and androgenic alopecia positively with the hedonistic tone (R = 0.36, p < 0.05). Serum testosterone (TST) correlated positively with the likelihood of seeking instrumental support in stressful situations (R = 0.31, p < 0.05) and with emotional focus (R = 0.34, p < 0.05). Serum androstenedione (A4-dione) correlated negatively with the escape behavior (R = -0.32, p < 0.05). No correlations were found between waist circumference and IR with the studied psychological measures. CONCLUSIONS Women with PCOS are characterized by depression, higher levels of tension induction, and impaired coping strategies in stressful situations, which correlate with clinical and laboratory indices of hyperandrogenism and not with central obesity and IR.

Abstract
The goal of our study was to test whether the types of OC affect the link between anxiety and its main maintenance factors: worry and perceived stress. Women are particularly at risk of being affected by excessive worrying, a core component of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and they are twice as likely as men to suffer from GAD. The literature suggests that gonadal hormones and types of oral contraceptives (OC) should be taken into account when exploring anxiety disorders in women, but the precise mechanism of this link remains understudied. We performed an observational cross-sectional study on a sample of 908 women, including 499 women naturally cycling (NC) and 409 taking OC (277 in the anti-androgenic group, 132 in the androgenic group). The participants filled in a battery of online questionnaires. Anxiety positively correlated with worry and perceived stress in the whole sample and in the three groups: androgenic OC, anti-androgenic OC, and NC. There was no significant difference between the groups on all the variables apart from the age of the participants. However, we found that women taking anti-androgenic OC had significantly higher levels of worry than NC women (after controlling for stress and age). The differences in OC types should be taken into account in future studies which might also lead to a better choice of OC based on women's individual needs.

Abstract
What are the major vulnerabilities in people with social anxiety? What are the most promising directions for translational research pertaining to this condition? The present paper provides an integrative summary of basic and applied translational research on social anxiety, emphasizing vulnerability factors. It is divided into two subsections: intrapersonal and interpersonal. The intrapersonal section synthesizes research relating to (a) self-representations and self-referential processes; (b) emotions and their regulation; and (c) cognitive biases: attention, interpretation and judgment, and memory. The interpersonal section summarizes findings regarding the systems of (a) approach and avoidance, (b) affiliation and social rank, and their implications for interpersonal impairments. Our review suggests that the science of social anxiety and, more generally, psychopathology may be advanced by examining processes and their underlying content within broad psychological systems. Increased interaction between basic and applied researchers to diversify and elaborate different perspectives on social anxiety is necessary for progress.

Abstract
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that exhibits striking sex differences in symptoms, prevalence, and associated problems across development. Etiological factors and mechanisms underlying these sex differences remain one of the most understudied aspects of this disorder. The current paper seeks to provide a novel theoretical framework for understanding this phenomenon by reviewing evidence that females with ADHD may experience a "double whammy" of organizational and activational pubertal hormonal effects. We propose a novel theory of activational effects of cyclical circulating ovarian hormones on ADHD with increasing risk at times of rapid declines in estrogen. These declines may decrease executive function and trait control at two points of the cycle characterized by biphasic affective risk: (1) increases in approach/risk-taking behaviors at mid-cycle (periovulatory) and (2) increases in avoidance/negative affect perimenstrually. Low estrogen and control may then interact with increases in positive and negative affect, respectively, to increase hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms post-ovulation and inattention symptoms perimenstrually. These interactions may be exacerbated by organizational pubertal effects on relatively overdeveloped limbic circuitry and adolescent-specific social pressures magnified in females with ADHD.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Platycladi Semen was recorded in Shen Nong's Herbal Classic and was considered a herbal medicine with low toxicity after long-term medication. Multiple traditional Chinese medicine prescriptions containing Platycladi Semen have been used to treat insomnia. Modern clinical practitioners commonly use Platycladi Semen to treat anxiety disorders, but there are few studies on its composition and anxiolytic mechanisms. AIM OF THE STUDY To describe the main components of Platycladi Semen and investigate its anxiolytic effects and mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS The main components of Platycladi Semen were characterized by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The anxiolytic effects of oral Platycladi Semen were evaluated in chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) induced mice. To explore the anxiolytic mechanisms of Platycladi Semen, serum non-targeted metabolomics combined with network pharmacology and molecular docking was performed. RESULTS Fourteen compounds were identified in the 50% methanol extract and 11 fatty acid derivatives were identified in the methyl-esterified fatty oil of Platycladi Semen. In CUMS mice, both the aqueous extract and fatty oil of Platycladi Semen had anxiolytic effects, which were shown by the increase in the time and frequency of mice entering the open arm in the elevated plus maze (EPM) experiment. Through serum non-targeted metabolomics, 34 differential metabolites were identified, and lipid metabolic pathways such as sphingolipid metabolism, steroidogenesis, alpha-linoleic acid, and linoleic acid metabolism were enriched. Through network pharmacology, 109 targets of the main components in Platycladi Semen were identified, and the 'neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction' and 'lipid metabolism' were enriched. The molecular docking results showed that the main components in Platycladi Semen could bind to the key targets such as peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor delta (PPARD), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARA), fatty acid binding protein 5 (FABP5), fatty acid binding protein 3 (FABP3), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARG), arachidonate 5-lipoxygenase (ALOX5) and fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH). CONCLUSION This study indicated that Platycladi Semen has anxiolytic effects, and the anxiolytic mechanisms may be the regulation of lipid metabolism and the neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction.

Abstract
Auditory-steady state responses (ASSRs) disclose brain's potency to oscillate and have been suggested to serve as biomarkers in various psychiatric disorders. GABAergic neurotransmission, a critical component for brain oscillations, is heavily influenced by sex hormones. In line, the severity of symptoms in psychiatric disorders is linked to changes in sex hormones during menstrual cycle. However, how these sex hormones affect ASSRs remain largely unknown. This was addressed by performing chronic recordings of ASSRs in mice while monitoring its estrus cycle. Here, the stability of ASSRs during long term recordings were validated and showed good reliability. 40 Hz ASSRs showed changes throughout estrus cycle where it decreased in metestrus phase compared to diestrus phase. In contrast, other frequency ASSRs did not show significant changes throughout estrus cycle. Taken together, our findings illustrate that the estrus cycle can influence the generation of ASSRs and the phase of the estrus cycle should be taken into consideration when ASSRs are recorded in females.

Abstract
A number of studies have been claimed to show that ovarian hormones, whose levels fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle, affect consumer preferences and financial decisions. The present article aims to critically analyze the literature examining associations between the phases of the menstrual cycle (peri-ovulatory vs. non-ovulatory) with particular consumer preferences (especially regarding clothing choices) and economic decisions (especially in regards to economic games and risk-taking). A search for studies was conducted in Web of Science and Scopus between 2004 and 2022, by combining keywords of the menstrual cycle, consumer preferences, and economic decisions. Once articles were selected, we identified the main findings, the characteristics of the population, and the methods for determining the phases of the cycle. We performed a p-curve analysis on previously reported statistically significant effects. These analyses find evidence for associations between peri-ovulatory status and specific consumer preferences, most strongly for appearance-enhancing products. They yield no compelling evidence for associations between peri-ovulatory status and financial decisions and risk-taking. We offer provisional conclusions and call for additional studies that possess sufficient statistical power to detect true meaningful effects, especially in the domain of financial decisions.

Abstract
Pregnancy loss can be defined as a loss before either 20 or 24 weeks of gestation (based on the first day of the last menstrual period) or the loss of an embryo or fetus less than 400 g in weight if the gestation age is unknown. Approximately 23 million pregnancy losses occur worldwide every year, equating to 15-20% of all clinically recognized pregnancies. A pregnancy loss is usually associated with physical consequences, such as early pregnancy bleeding ranging in severity from spotting to hemorrhage. However, it can also be associated with profound psychological distress, which can be felt by both partners and may include feelings of denial, shock, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and suicide. Progesterone plays a key part in the maintenance of a pregnancy, and progesterone supplementation has been assessed as a preventative measure in patients at increased risk of experiencing a pregnancy loss. The primary objective of this piece is to assess the evidence for various progestogen formulations in the treatment of threatened and recurrent pregnancy loss, postulating that an optimal treatment plan would preferably include a validated psychological support tool as an adjunct to appropriate pharmacological treatment.

Abstract
Particular phases of the menstrual cycle may exacerbate affective symptoms for females with a diagnosed mental health disorder. However, there are mixed findings regarding whether affective symptoms change across the menstrual cycle in females without a clinical diagnosis. The window of vulnerability model proposes that natural increases in ovarian hormones in the mid-luteal phase of the menstrual cycle lead to systematic changes in brain networks associated with affective processing. Consequently, the model posits that females may experience stress more intensely and remember negative events more readily in the mid-luteal phase, increasing their risk for higher affective symptoms. Using a 35-day longitudinal study design, we tested the window of vulnerability model in a non-clinical sample. We tracked naturally cycling females' daily stress and three types of affective symptoms: anxious apprehension, anxious arousal, and anhedonic depression. Using multilevel modeling, we simultaneously modeled within- and between-person associations among stress and menstrual phase for each affective symptom. We found increased anhedonic depression in the mid-luteal phase but not anxious apprehension or anxious arousal. Moreover, we detected a positive association between within- and between-person stress and anxious apprehension and anhedonic depression, but not anxious arousal. These associations were not stronger in the mid-luteal phase. Overall, we provide weak evidence for a window of vulnerability for affective symptoms in the mid-luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Our findings suggest that stress is a better predictor of fluctuations in affective symptoms than the menstrual cycle. Moreover, our findings highlight the importance of measuring multiple negative affective symptoms because they may be differentially related to stress and the menstrual cycle.

Abstract
Early-life adversity (ELA) increases the likelihood of neuropsychiatric diagnoses, which are more prevalent in women than men. Since changes in reproductive hormone levels can also increase the probability of anxiety disorders in women, we examined the effects of ELA on adult female mice across the estrous cycle. We found that during diestrus, when progesterone levels are relatively high, ELA mice exhibit increased avoidance behavior and increased theta oscillation power in the ventral hippocampus (vHIP). We also found that diestrus ELA mice had higher levels of progesterone and lower levels of allopregnanolone, a neurosteroid metabolite of progesterone, in the vHIP compared with control-reared mice. Progesterone receptor antagonism normalized avoidance behavior in ELA mice, while treatment with a negative allosteric modulator of allopregnanolone promoted avoidance behavior in control mice. These results suggest that altered vHIP progesterone and allopregnanolone signaling during diestrus increases avoidance behavior in ELA mice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study evaluated the impact of various factors on age at natural menopause as well as psychiatric symptoms including anxiety and depression among postmenopausal women in Jordan. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted and included females with natural menopause (n = 450). A structured interview-based questionnaire was used to collect data about subjects' sociodemographics, health, reproductive and environmental factors. Hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS) was used to assess psychiatric symptoms. Factors associated with age at natural menopause, depression, or anxiety were identified. RESULTS The mean age at natural menopause was 49.5 ± 4.8 years. Mothers' age at menopause, the regularity of cycles, age at last pregnancy and diabetes were significant positive predictors of age at menopause (p < 0.05). The mean anxiety and depressive scores were 6.52 ± 4.26 and 6.77 ± 3.44 respectively. Age, high school education, being nonsmoker and breastfeeding history were inversely associated with anxiety but only cycle length and multiparous were positively associated with anxiety (p < 0.05). While education and being nonsmoker were negatively associated with depression, hypertension was a positive predictor. CONCLUSIONS The results reveal several environmental, health, and reproductive predictors of age at menopause or psychiatric symptoms among postmenopausal women in Jordan.

Abstract
A substantial body of literature has examined how women's psychology and behavior vary as a function of conception risk across the ovarian cycle. These effects are widely believed to be outcomes of hormonal regulation, in particular effects of estrogens (E) and progesterone (P). Increasingly, researchers have sought to test predictions about how psychological processes or behavior vary as a function of conception risk by examining associations with estrogen (e.g., estradiol) and progesterone levels. Yet issues regarding how best to assess these associations arise. Should hormone levels be log-transformed? Do hormone ratios best capture their joint effects? How important are hormone interactions? How should outliers be treated? Across two large datasets, we examined hormonal predictors of conception risk, estimated from day of a luteinizing hormone (LH) surge. Log-transformed E and P levels predicted conception risk better than raw E and P levels did. The raw E/P ratio was a relatively poor predictor, whereas the log-transformed ratio (ln[E/P]) was a relatively good predictor. E × P interactions were detected but weak. Outliers were frequent, especially in distributions of raw hormone levels. Hormone measures predicted two psychological outcomes in these datasets-sexual desire and preferences for strength and muscularity-in parallel to how strongly they predicted conception risk. These results give rise to several recommendations regarding treatment of hormone measures and their use in analyses.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Anxiety symptoms increase during the peri-menstrual phase of the menstrual cycle in people with anxiety disorders. Whether this reflects a heightened variant of normal menstrual-related changes in psychological states experienced by healthy (i.e. non-anxious) people is unknown. Moreover, menstrual-related change in anxiety symptoms is a poorly understood phenomenon, highlighting a need for pre-clinical models to aid mechanistic discovery. Here, we review recent evidence for menstrual effects on anxiety-like features in healthy humans as a counterpart to recent reviews that have focused on clinically anxious populations. We appraise the utility of rodent models to identify mechanisms of menstrual effects on anxiety and offer suggestions to harmonise methodological practices across species to advance knowledge in this field. RECENT FINDINGS Consistent with reports in clinical populations, some evidence indicates anxiety symptoms increase during the peri-menstrual period in healthy people, although null results have been reported, and these effects are heterogeneous across studies and individuals. Studies in rats show robust increases in anxiety during analogous phases of the oestrous cycle. Studies in female rats are useful to identify the evolutionarily conserved biological mechanisms of menstrual-related changes in anxiety. Future experimental approaches in rats should model the heterogeneity observed in human studies to increase alignment across species and advance understanding of the individual factors that increase the propensity to experience menstrual-related changes in anxiety.

Abstract
Research on social status competition among women suggests that underlying hormonal shifts associated with the ovulatory cycle systematically drive alterations in preferences and behavior. Specifically, it is proposed that the fertile window, marked by heightened estradiol and lower progesterone levels, is related to increased psychological motivation for intrasexual social comparison, leading to increasing competitiveness and jealousy. In this pre-registered, longitudinal study, 257 women provided saliva samples for hormone assays, rated the attractiveness of other women, and self-reported intrasexual competitiveness and jealousy across four testing sessions. Multilevel analyses revealed no compelling evidence for (hormone-related) cycle shifts in intrasexual competitiveness, attractiveness ratings, or jealousy. Rather, women higher in intrasexual competitiveness seem to rate other women as more attractive in general. We discuss how our results contribute to a growing body of literature suggesting that women’s social attitudes and preferences are more stable and less hormonally influenced than previously assumed.

Objective
A growing body of research has begun investigating the relationship between hormones and female competitiveness. Many researchers have focused on the effect of the menstrual cycle and hormonal contraceptives. Despite many attempts at understanding hormone-behavior associations, contradictory findings have made it difficult to determine the existence of true effects. The aim of the current research was to use a robust methodological design to investigate the effect of fertility probability on four competitive orientations in naturally cycling women and hormonal contraceptive users.
Methods
Using a longitudinal diary study with over 3,900 observations from 21 countries, we explore the effect of fertility probability on four self-report competitive orientations after controlling for menstruation: self-developmental competition, hyper competitiveness, competition avoidance, and lack of interest toward competition.
Results
Using Bayesian estimation for ordinal mixed models, we found that fertility probability was associated with an increase in self-development competitiveness amongst naturally cycling women but not hormonal contraceptive users. We also found weak evidence that hormonal contraceptive users show reduced interest in competing compared to naturally cycling women. There were no other robust effects of fertility or hormonal contraceptive use.
Conclusions
These results suggest that fertility probability is associated with increased fluctuations in self-development competitive motivation and that hormonal contraceptives interfere with this effect. This research contributes to the growing body of literature suggesting that hormonal contraceptives may influence psychology and behavior by disrupting evolved hormonal mechanisms.

Abstract
Differential HPA axis function has been proposed to underlie sex-differences in mental disorders; however, the impact of fluctuating sex hormones across the menstrual cycle on HPA axis activity is still unclear. This meta-analysis investigated basal cortisol concentrations as a marker for HPA axis activity across the menstrual cycle. Through a systematic literature search of five databases, 121 longitudinal studies were included, summarizing data of 2641 healthy, cycling participants between the ages of 18 and 45. The meta-analysis showed higher cortisol concentrations in the follicular vs. luteal phase (dSMC = 0.12, p =.004, [0.04 - 0.20]). Comparisons between more precise cycle phases were mostly insignificant, aside from higher concentrations in the menstrual vs. premenstrual phase (dSMC = 0.17, [0.02 - 0.33], p =.03). In all included studies, nine samples used established cortisol parameters to indicate HPA axis function, specifically diurnal profiles (k = 4) and the cortisol awakening response (CAR) (k = 5). Therefore, the meta-analysis highlights the need for more rigorous investigation of HPA axis activity and menstrual cycle phase.

Abstract
Anxiety-related behaviours as well as the prevalence of anxiety disorders show a large sex difference in humans. Clinical studies in humans as well as behavioural studies in rodents suggest that estradiol may have anxiolytic properties. In line with this, anxiety symptoms fluctuate with estradiol levels along the menstrual cycle. However, the influence of estradiol on subjective, behavioural, as well as physiological correlates of anxiety has never been systematically addressed in humans. We ran a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study (N = 126) to investigate the effects of estradiol on anxiety in men and women. In healthy volunteers, circulating estradiol levels were elevated through estradiol administration over two consecutive days to simulate the rise in estradiol levels around ovulation. Subjective, behavioral, as well as, physiological correlates of anxiety were assessed using a virtual reality elevated plus-maze (EPM). Estradiol treatment reduced the physiological stress response with blunted heart rate response and lower cortisol levels compared to placebo treatment in both sexes. In contrast, respiration frequency was only reduced in women after estradiol treatment. Behavioural measures of anxiety as well as subjective anxiety on the EPM were not affected by estradiol treatment. In general, women showed more avoidance and less approach behavior and reported higher subjective anxiety levels on the EPM than men. These results highlight the limited anxiolytic properties of circulating levels of estradiol in humans, which influence physiological markers of anxiety but not approach and avoidance behaviour or subjective anxiety levels.

Abstract
LEARNING OBJECTIVE After participating in this activity, learners should be better able to:• Discuss and outline the general and overlapping effects of the menstrual cycle on women's mental health. ABSTRACT A growing body of research demonstrates menstrual cycle-dependent fluctuations in psychiatric symptoms; these fluctuations can therefore be considered as prevalent phenomena. Possible mechanisms underlying these fluctuations posit behavioral, psychological, and neuroendocrine influences. Recent reviews document cyclic exacerbation of symptoms and explore these mechanisms in the context of specific and often single disorders. The question remains, however, as to whether there are general and overlapping effects of the menstrual cycle on women's mental health. To address this gap, we synthesized the literature examining the exacerbation of a variety of psychiatric symptoms across the menstrual cycle in adult women. Results show that the premenstrual and menstrual phases are most consistently implicated in transdiagnostic symptom exacerbation. Specifically, strong evidence indicates increases in psychosis, mania, depression, suicide/suicide attempts, and alcohol use during these phases. Anxiety, stress, and binge eating appear to be elevated more generally throughout the luteal phase. The subjective effects of smoking and cocaine use are reduced during the luteal phase, but fewer data are available for other substances. Less consistent patterns are demonstrated for panic disorder, symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder, and borderline personality disorder, and it is difficult to draw conclusions for symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and trichotillomania because of the limited data. Future research should focus on developing standardized approaches to identifying menstrual cycle phases and adapting pharmacological and behavioral interventions for managing fluctuations in psychiatric symptoms across the menstrual cycle.

Abstract
This study verifies associated factors with trait and state anxiety in professional soccer teams during the COVID-19 pandemic. The sample was composed of 315 athletes, coaches, and physical trainers of professional soccer teams during the COVID-19 pandemic. From this amount, 214 were classified with trait anxiety, and 315 were classified with state anxiety using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). This study is an epidemiological and cross-sectional study. We applied an observational method, and we performed a remote measurement. The measurement was made via online questionnaires in male and female individuals working on soccer teams (soccer professionals or athletes) who could be affected by anxiety during social isolation in the COVID-19 pandemic. Each questionnaire was composed of sociodemographic questions, self-perceived performance, and STAI. The main results indicated a significant difference between female vs. male soccer professionals in state anxiety (54.97 ± 9.43 vs. 57.65 ± 9.48 index) and trait anxiety (54.21 ± 5.74 vs. 55.76 ± 6.41 index) with higher results in men. Sociodemographic variables impacted significant differences between female and male athletes and professionals of soccer clubs, and anxiety during the pandemic COVID-19 period impacted self-perceived performance analysis. The present results highlight the importance of cognitive behavior therapy for professional soccer teams.

Abstract
Previous research indicates that worry is associated with poorer working memory performance. Moreover, prior work demonstrates that estradiol relates to both worry and working memory performance. In the present study, we sought to further examine interrelations between worry, estradiol and working memory by testing whether estradiol moderates the association between worry and working memory in females. We hypothesized that worry would be associated with poorer working memory performance at higher levels of estradiol. We also conducted exploratory analyses to examine the role of progesterone as a moderator of the association between worry and working memory. Participants were 97 naturally-cycling females who attended four lab sessions across their menstrual cycles. Consistent with predictions, higher average levels of worry were associated with lower working memory accuracy on particularly difficult trials when average levels of estradiol were also high. The same association between higher worry and lower working memory accuracy emerged when average levels of progesterone were high. Findings highlight the importance of considering ovarian hormones in future studies and current theories of anxiety and cognition.

Abstract
Female athletes have garnered considerable attention in the last few years as more and more women participate in sports events. However, despite the well-known repercussions of female sex hormones, few studies have investigated the specificities of elite female athletes. In this review, we present the current but still limited data on how normal menstrual phases, altered menstrual phases, and hormonal contraception affect both physical and cognitive performances in these elite athletes. To examine the implicated mechanisms, as well as the potential performances and health risks in this population, we then take a broader multidisciplinary approach and report on the causal/reciprocal relationships between hormonal status and mental and physical health in young (18-40 years) healthy females, both trained and untrained. We thus cover the research on both physiological and psychological variables, as well as on the Athlete Biological Passport used for anti-doping purposes. We consider the fairly frequent discrepancies and summarize the current knowledge in this new field of interest. Last, we conclude with some practical guidelines for eliciting improvements in physical and cognitive performance while minimizing the health risks for female athletes.

Abstract
Objective: Understanding gender differences in responses of health-care workers (HCWs) to COVID-19 outbreak is an effective way to promote customized supports. Methods: During February 2020, 103 HCWs infected with COVID-19 (64 females and 39 males) and 535 uninfected HCWs (383 females and 152 males) were recruited in a cross-sectional study. Level of attention, six emotional status, and self-evaluation of eight protective measures were recorded. Multivariable Firth's logistic regressions were applied to explored independent effect of gender. Results: During early outbreak, female HCWs were more likely to give greater attention, adjusted OR:1.92 (95%CI 1.14-3.23) in total HCWs. Higher proportion of anxiety was observed in female HCWs, adjusted OR:3.14 (95%CI 1.98-4.99) for total HCWs, 4.32(95%CI 1.32-14.15) for infected HCWs and 2.97 (1.78, 4.95) for uninfected HCWs. Proportion of pessimism, fear, full of fighting spirit, and optimism were low, and no gender differences were observed. During a later outbreak, a majority of HCWs reported being very familiar with eight protective measures. After training, a proportion of high self-evaluation in hand hygiene, wearing gloves, and surgical masks increased independently in female HCWs, and adjusted ORs were 3.07 (95% CI 1.57-5.99), 2.37 (95% CI 1.26-4.49), and 1.92 (95% CI 1.02-3.62), respectively. Infection status amplified gender difference in anxiety, hand hygiene, and glove wearing. Conclusion: Female HCWs perceived the outbreak seriously, effective emotional and psychological well-ness should be targeted at female HCWs preferentially, and male HCWs should be encouraged to express their feelings and be further trained.

Abstract
Progesterone (P4) belongs to a factor that affects stress response and is a potential carcinogen, and saliva levels are expected to be a standard measurement for clinical diagnosis. In this study, a new type of nanoflower with both recognition functionality and catalytic substrate ability was prepared by copper phosphate, Pt/IrO2 nanocomposites (Pt/IrO2 NPs), streptavidin (SA) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) via a one-pot co-precipitation strategy. Due to the enhanced catalytic activity and stability of Pt/IrO2@SA@HRP nanoflowers, we developed a powerful and sensitive multiple-catalysis ELISA to monitor progesterone in saliva. Multiple-catalysis ELISA based on a specific antibody and Pt/IrO2@SA@HRP nanoflowers exhibited a linear interval range from 0.217 ng mL-1 to 7.934 ng mL-1. The median inhibitory concentration (IC50) for progesterone is 1.311 ng mL-1 and the limit of detection (LOD = IC10) is 0.076 ng mL-1 in the proposed method. Satisfactory recoveries were in a range of 79.6-107% with an acceptable coefficient of variation (below 10.6%). Results of the multiple-catalysis ELISA and LC-MS/MS had a good coincidence. Our result unraveled that multiple-catalysis ELISA is a potentially serviceable tool for the detection of progesterone in saliva.

Abstract
Cyclical fluctuations of the ovarian hormones estrogen (E2) and progesterone (PROG) have multiple effects on reproduction and development. However, little is known about the roles of E2 and PROG in women's social behaviors. Here, based on evolutionary theory suggesting social sensitivity and inhibition ability are conductive to maintaining social relationships, we provide evidence for the association between menstrual phases and social orientation. In Study 1, 78 women provided saliva samples and reported their intensity of behavioral activation/inhibition system (BAS/BIS) and interpersonal sensitivity at either of two phases of the menstrual cycle: late follicular phase (FP), and mid-luteal phase (LP). A significant between-subject association emerged, revealing that women with higher PROG levels reported higher levels of social feedback sensitivity, and women with relatively high PROG levels showed a positive association between their E2 levels and inhibitory response. In Study 2, 30 women reported their interpersonal anxiety and finished the social value orientation (SVO) measures at both late FP and mid-LP. A significant within-person effect emerged: women in the mid-LP, which is characterized by higher PROG levels, reported higher levels of interpersonal anxiety and SVO. In sum, these findings revealed that women's social orientation could fluctuate naturally with ovarian hormones across the menstrual cycle.

Abstract
Ovarian hormones exert an influence on social information processing, in which, however, the exact roles of estradiol and progesterone remain unclear. This study examines the specific influences of these two ovarian hormones on social information processing across the menstrual cycle using the emotional face flanker task and attentional network test (ANT). Twenty-six naturally cycling, healthy women were tested thrice: during menses, in the follicular phase, and in the luteal phase. In the emotional face flanker task, a significant positive relation was found between progesterone levels and reaction times (RTs) for sad faces, suggesting that high progesterone levels may activate the social monitoring system and allocate more attention to the social stimulus, which benefits individuals' survival and adaptation. In the ANT, a significant increase was found in RTs and accuracy during the luteal phase, suggesting that luteal women increase this accuracy by exerting a relatively conservative strategy of allocating more attention to the targets. Taken together, these findings indicate that high levels of progesterone may facilitate social information processing by optimizing attention allocation. Moreover, overactivation of the social monitoring system may make women more susceptible to stressors and promote affective disturbances, which may provide underlying pathophysiology of the premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

Abstract
Anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent categories of mental illnesses. The gut-brain axis, along with gastrointestinally-derived neuropeptides, like glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), are emerging as potential key regulators of emotionality, including anxiety behavior. However, the neuroanatomical substrates from which GLP-1 exerts its anxiogenic effect remain poorly characterized. Here we focus on a relatively new candidate nucleus, the supramammillary nucleus (SuM), located just caudal to the lateral hypothalamus and ventral to the ventral tegmental area. Our focus on the SuM is supported by previous data showing expression of GLP-1R mRNA throughout the SuM and activation of the SuM during anxiety-inducing behaviors in rodents. Data show that chemogenetic activation of neurons in the SuM results in an anxiolytic response in male and female rats. In contrast, selective activation of SuM GLP-1R, by microinjection of a GLP-1R agonist exendin-4 into the SuM resulted in potent anxiety-like behavior, measured in both open field and elevated plus maze tests in male and female rats. This anxiogenic effect of GLP-1R activation persisted after high-fat diet exposure. Importantly, reduction of GLP-1R expression in the SuM, by AAV-shRNA GLP-1R knockdown, resulted in a clear anxiolytic response; an effect only observed in female rats. Our data identify a new neural substrate for GLP-1 control of anxiety-like behavior and indicate that the SuM GLP-1R are sufficient for anxiogenesis in both sexes, but necessary only in females.

Abstract
The behavioral activation system (BAS) and the behavioral inhibition system (BIS) have been proposed to relate to stable traits that predict inter-individual differences in motivation. Prior reports point dopamine (DA) pathways, mainly including ventral tegmental area (VTA) and substantia nigra (SN), implicate in subserving reward-related functions associated with BAS and inhibitory functions related with BIS. However, as an important factor that affects DA releasing, it remains an open question whether the ovarian hormones may also be related to BIS/BAS. Here, to investigate effects of the estradiol (E2) and progesterone (PROG) on BIS/BAS and related DA pathways, we employed a BIS/BAS scale and the resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during the late follicular phase (FP) and the mid-luteal phase (LP). On the behavioral level, when women had high PROG levels, their E2 levels were found positively correlated with BIS scores, but those women whose PROG levels were low, their E2 levels were negative correlation with BIS scores. On the neural level, we demonstrated BAS was related with the VTA pathway, included brain reward regions of nucleus accumbens (NAc) and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC). Meanwhile, the BIS was correlated with the SN-dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) pathway. ROI-based resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) analyses further revealed that, RSFC between the SN and dlPFC was modulated by ovarian hormones. With higher PROG levels, increased E2 levels among women were accompanied by stronger RSFC of the SN-dlPFC, but when PROG levels were low, E2 levels were negatively correlated with the SN-dlPFC RSFC. These findings revealed a combined enhancement effect of E2 and PROG on BIS, and the SN-dlPFC pathway was mainly involved in this process.

Abstract
Estrogen and progesterone have distinct concentrations across the menstrual cycle, each one promoting several physiological alterations other than preparing the uterus for pregnancy. Whether these physiological alterations can influence motor output during a fatiguing contraction is the goal of this review, with an emphasis on the obtained effect sizes. Studies on this topic frequently attempt to report if there is a statistically significant difference in fatigability between the follicular and luteal phases of the menstrual cycle. Although the significant difference (the P-value) can inform the probability of the event, it does not indicate the magnitude of it. We also investigated whether the type of task performed (e.g., isometric vs. dynamic) can further influence the magnitude by which exercise-induced fatigue changes with fluctuations in the concentration of ovarian hormones. We retrieved experimental studies in eumenorrheic women published between 1975 and 2019. The initial search yielded 921 studies, and after manual refinement, 46 experimental studies that reported metrics of motor output in both the follicular and luteal phases of the menstrual cycle were included. From these retrieved studies, 15 showed a statistical difference between the luteal and follicular phases (seven showing less fatigability during the luteal phase and eight during the follicular phase). The effect size was not consistent across studies and with a large range (-6.77; 1.61, favoring the luteal and follicular phase, respectively). The inconsistencies across studies may be a consequence of the differences in the limb used during the fatiguing contraction (upper vs. lower extremity), the type of contraction (isometric vs. dynamic), the muscle mass engaged (single limb vs. full body), and the techniques used to define the menstrual cycle phase (e.g., serum concentration vs. reported day of menses). Further studies are required to determine the effects of a regular menstrual cycle phase on the exercise-induced fatigability.

Abstract
STUDY QUESTION Does the newly discovered menstruating spiny mouse exhibit behavioural and metabolic changes in correlation with premenstrual phases of the menstrual cycle? SUMMARY ANSWER This is the first report of cycle variability in the exploratory and interactive behaviour, and food consumption in menstruating spiny mice, and demonstrates that physiological changes are also dependent on within-subject variation. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a prominent cyclic disorder that affects millions of women worldwide. More than 70% of women endure symptoms of impending menstruation, such as bloating, abdominal cramping and nausea to some degree. Consequently, ~8% of women experience recurrent physical and emotional symptoms which are extreme enough to disrupt daily life and seek intervention. Due to a lack of an appropriate animal model, the mechanisms underlying PMS are poorly understood, and subsequently, effective treatments are limited. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION This study analyses the changes in behavioural responses to the investigator during vaginal lavage (n = 14), exploratory behaviour (n = 11) and metabolism (n = 20) across the menstrual cycle in the spiny mouse (Acomys cahirinus). PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS We performed vaginal lavages on virgin spiny mice (6-8 months of age) and subjected each cohort of females to repeated measures for vaginal lavage, exploratory behaviour and metabolism. Stages of the menstrual cycle were designated as early follicular, late follicular, early luteal, late luteal, early menstrual and late menstrual, with the late luteal and early menstrual phases considered as premenstrual phases and analysed using generalized estimating equations. For vaginal lavage, the behavioural responses to researcher handling were scored on an increasing scale of severity during the lavage process (e.g. restraint, frequency of vocalizations, total handling time). For exploratory behaviour, exploration, memory and sociability were assessed through subjection to Open Field (OF), Novel Object Recognition (NORT), Social Novelty (SN) and Elevated Plus Maze (EPM) tests. For metabolism, physiological changes were measured over a 24-h period in metabolic cages. Results are mean ± SD with statistical significance set to P < 0.05. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE Qualitative behavioural assessment showed that compared to early follicular controls, during premenstrual phases, cycling females had significantly increased probability of: manifesting difficulties during restraint (4×, P < 0.01), vocalizing (8×, P < 0.01) and exhibiting isolation in the cage (40×, P = 0.041). We saw significant increases in handling time during the premenstrual phase in cycling females (76 ± 16 s) compared to controls (55 ± 7 s, P < 0.001). For exploratory behaviour, cycling females in their early menstrual phase travelled significantly less distance in the outer zone of the OF arena (13.3 ± 9.0 m) than females in their early luteal phase (22.3 ± 9.9 m, P = 0.038) and at significantly reduced velocities (40.2 ± 10.5 mm/s and 78.8 ± 31.0 mm/s, respectively, P = 0.006). These females also had fewer entries into the EPM open arms during the same phases (9.6 ± 6.1 and versus 20.0 ± 7.2, respectively, P = 0.030) and travelled less distance (3.2 ± 2.8 m versus 7.0 ± 5.5 m, respectively, P = 0.026). No differences were observed in NORT or SN across the cycle. In the metabolism studies, spiny mice demonstrated a significant increase in food consumption (percentage of body weight) during the early follicular and late luteal phases (3.9 ± 2.4% and 3.8 ± 2.1%, respectively) compared to the late follicular phase (2.3 ± 2.6%, P = 0.015). LARGE SCALE DATA N/A. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION This is an observational study to determine fundamental changes in behaviour and metabolism in a novel species, and as such, lacks commercially available laboratory reagents and protocols specific to the spiny mouse. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS The timing of these behavioural and physiological changes suggests that spiny mice exhibit symptoms analogous to PMS in higher order primates, thus providing a pre-clinical model for testing novel interventions to alleviate premenstrual symptoms and overcoming many limitations associated with this research area. Abstract
Findings for progesterone and anxiety in non-human animals led to the hypothesis that women's interpersonal anxiety will track changes in progesterone during the menstrual cycle. There have been few direct tests of this hypothesis, however. Consequently, we used a longitudinal design to investigate whether interpersonal anxiety (assessed using the anxious jealousy subscale of the relationship jealousy questionnaire) tracked changes in salivary steroid hormones during the menstrual cycle in a large sample of young adult women. We found no evidence for within-subject effects of progesterone, estradiol, their interaction or ratio, testosterone, or cortisol on anxious jealousy. There was some evidence that other components of jealousy (e.g., reactive jealousy) tracked changes in women's cortisol, however. Collectively, these results provide no evidence for the hypothesis that interpersonal anxiety tracks changes in progesterone during the menstrual cycle.

Abstract
Although results of animal research show that interactions between stress and sex hormones are implicated in the development of affective disorders in women, translation of these findings to patients has been scarce. As a basic step toward advancing this field of research, we analyzed findings of studies which reported circulating cortisol levels in healthy women in the follicular vs. luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. We deemed this analysis critical not only to advance our understanding of basic physiology, but also as an important contrast to the findings of future studies evaluating stress and sex hormones in women with affective disorders. We hypothesized that cortisol levels would be lower in the follicular phase based on the proposition that changes in levels of potent GABAergic neurosteroids, including allopregnanolone, during the menstrual cycle dynamically change in the opposite direction relative to cortisol levels. Implementing strict inclusion criteria, we compiled results of high-quality studies involving 778 study participants to derive a standardized mean difference between circulating cortisol levels in the follicular vs. luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. In line with our hypothesis, our meta-analysis found that women in the follicular phase had higher cortisol levels than women in the luteal phase, with an overall Hedges' g of 0.13 (p < 0.01) for the random effects model. No significant between-study difference was detected, with the level of heterogeneity in the small range. Furthermore, there was no evidence of publication bias. As cortisol regulation is a delicate process, we review some of the basic mechanisms by which progesterone, its potent metabolites, and estradiol regulate cortisol output and circulation to contribute to the net effect of higher cortisol in the follicular phase.

Safety of levonorgestrel 52 mg intrauterine system compared to copper intrauterine device: a population-based cohort study. Contraception 2019; 99:345-349. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the risk of all-cause death, hospitalizations (any cause), ectopic pregnancy, pelvic inflammatory disease or infection, uterine perforation, device removal, neuro-psychiatric drugs initiation, or new psychiatric visit(s) between levonorgestrel (LNG) 52 mg intrauterine system (IUS) and copper intrauterine device (IUD) users in France. STUDY DESIGN We identified a historical cohort of women aged 20-55 years with a first dispensing of either LNG 52 mg IUS or copper-IUD between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2014, in the French National Claims database, SNDS. We used propensity score matching to balance the two groups on baseline sociodemographic and clinical characteristics to minimize confounding. We estimated Cox proportional hazards models to compare health outcomes between LNG 52 mg IUS and copper-IUDs users. RESULTS We matched 9318 LNG 52 mg IUS users (mean age 36.2±6.8 years) to 10,185 copper-IUD users (mean age 35.4±7.1 years). After matching and age-adjustment, LNG 52 mg IUS users had a slightly higher risk of anxiolytic drugs initiation (HR 1.08, 95%CI 1.01-1.15) and device removal (HR 1.05, 95%CI 1.01-1.10) compared to copper-IUD users, with no differences for other studied outcomes. CONCLUSION French IUS users report slightly more anxiolytic treatment initiation and IUD removal compared to copper-IUD users. These results are consistent with a potential pharmacovigilance signal of anxiety-related disorders in LNG 52 mg IUS users. IMPLICATIONS STATEMENT In French LNG 52 mg IUS users, there was slightly more anxiolytic treatment initiation and IUD removal compared to copper-IUD users. No risk difference was found for all-cause death, hospitalizations, ectopic pregnancy, pelvic disorders, and uterine perforation. We cannot exclude that the associations are related to differences in characteristics of women who chose each type of type of IUD.
