Abstract
Aromatic amino acids (AAA) and derived compounds have enormous commercial value with extensive applications in the food, chemical and pharmaceutical fields. Microbial production of AAA and derived compounds is a promising prospect for its environmental friendliness and sustainability. However, low yield and production efficiency remain major challenges for realizing industrial production. With the advancement of synthetic biology, microbial production of AAA and derived compounds has been significantly facilitated. In this review, a comprehensive overview on the current progresses, challenges and corresponding solutions for AAA and derived compounds biosynthesis is provided. The most cutting-edge developments of synthetic biology technology in AAA and derived compounds biosynthesis, including CRISPR-based system, genetically encoded biosensors and synthetic genetic circuits, were highlighted. Finally, future prospects of modern strategies conducive to the biosynthesis of AAA and derived compounds are discussed. This review offers guidance on constructing microbial cell factory for aromatic compound using synthetic biology technology.

Abstract
Plant-derived phenolic gallic acid (GA) is an important raw material for antioxidants and food additives. Efforts to ferment GA using microbial processes have aimed at minimizing production costs and environmental load using enzymes that hydroxylate p-hydroxybenzoate and protocatechuate (PCA). Here, we found a p-hydroxybenzoate hydroxylase (PobA) in the bacterium Hylemonella gracilis NS1 (HgPobA) with 1.5-fold more hydroxylation activity than that from Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 and thus converted PCA to GA more efficiently. The PCA hydroxylation activity of HgPobA was improved by introducing the amino acid substitutions L207V/Y393F or T302A/Y393F. These mutants had 2.9- and 3.7-fold lower Kmapp for PCA than wild-type HgPobA. An Escherichia coli strain that reinforces shikimate pathway metabolism and produces HgPobA when cultured for 60 h generated 0.27 g L-1 of GA. This is the first report of fermenting glucose to generate GA using a natural enzyme from the PobA family. The E. coli strain harboring the HgPobA L207V/Y393F mutant increased GA production to 0.56 g L-1. During the early stages of culture, GA was fermented at a 10-fold higher rate by a strain producing either HgPobA L207V/Y393F or T302A/Y393F compared with wild-type HgPobA, which agreed with the high kcatapp/Kmapp PCA values of this mutant. We enhanced a PobA isozyme and its PCA hydroxylating function to efficiently and cost-effectively ferment GA.

Abstract
Phenolic acids are important natural bioactive compounds with varied physiological functions. They are extensively used in food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and other chemical industries and have attractive market prospects. Compared to plant extraction and chemical synthesis, microbial fermentation for phenolic acid production from renewable carbon sources has significant advantages. This review focuses on the structural information, physiological functions, current applications, and biosynthesis pathways of phenolic acids, especially advances in the development of metabolically engineered microbes for the production of phenolic acids. This review provides useful insights concerning phenolic acid production through metabolic engineering of microbial cell factories.

Abstract
Phenolic compounds are industrially versatile chemicals, also the most ubiquitous pollutants. Recently, biosynthesis and biodegradation of phenols has attracted increasing attention, while phenols' toxicity is a major issue. Here, we evolved phloroglucinol-tolerant Escherichia coli strains via adaptive evolution, and three mutations (ΔsodB, ΔclpX and fetAB overexpression) prove of great assistance in the tolerance improvement. We discover that phloroglucinol complexes with iron and promotes the generation of hydroxyl radicals in Fenton reaction, which leads to reducing power depletion, lipid peroxidation, and ferroptosis-like cell death of E. coli. Besides phloroglucinol, various phenols can trigger ferroptosis-like death in diverse organisms, from bacteria to mammalian cells. Furthermore, repressing this ferroptosis-like death improves phloroglucinol production and phenol degradation by corresponding strains respectively, showing great application potential in microbial degradation or production of desired phenolic compounds, and phloroglucinol-induced ferroptosis suppresses tumor growth in mice, indicating phloroglucinol as a promising drug for cancer treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lignocellulose, the most abundant non-edible feedstock on Earth, holds substantial potential for eco-friendly chemicals, fuels, and pharmaceuticals production. Glucose, xylose, and arabinose are primary components in lignocellulose, and their efficient conversion into high-value products is vital for economic viability. While glucose and xylose have been explored for such purpose, arabinose has been relatively overlooked. RESULTS This study demonstrates a microbial platform for producing 1,2,4-butanetriol (BTO) from arabinose, a versatile compound with diverse applications in military, polymer, rubber and pharmaceutical industries. The screening of the key pathway enzyme, keto acids decarboxylase, facilitated the production of 276.7 mg/L of BTO from arabinose in Escherichia coli. Through protein engineering of the rate-limiting enzyme KivD, which involved reducing the size of the binding pocket to accommodate a smaller substrate, its activity improved threefold, resulting in an increase in the BTO titer to 475.1 mg/L. Additionally, modular optimization was employed to adjust the expression levels of pathway genes, further enhancing BTO production to 705.1 mg/L. CONCLUSION The present study showcases a promising microbial platform for sustainable BTO production from arabinose. These works widen the spectrum of potential lignocellulosic products and lays the foundation for comprehensive utilization of lignocellulosic components.

Abstract
Pyrogallol is widely used in several industrial applications and can subsequently contaminate aquatic ecosystems. Here, we report for the first time the presence of pyrogallol in wastewater in Egypt. Currently, there is a complete lack of toxicity and carcinogenicity data for pyrogallol exposure in fish. To address this gap, both acute and sub-acute toxicity experiments were conducted to determine the toxicity of pyrogallol in catfish (Clarias gariepinus). Behavioral and morphological endpoints were evaluated, in addition to blood hematological endpoints, biochemical indices, electrolyte balance, and the erythron profile (poikilocytosis and nuclear abnormalities). In the acute toxicity assay, it was determined that the 96 h median-lethal concentration (96 h-LC50) of pyrogallol for catfish was 40 mg/L. In sub-acute toxicity experiment, fish divided into four groups; Group 1 was the control group. Group 2 was exposed to 1 mg/L of pyrogallol, Group 3 was exposed to 5 mg/L of pyrogallol, and Group 4 was exposed to 10 mg/L of pyrogallol. Fish showed morphological changes such as erosion of the dorsal and caudal fins, skin ulcers, and discoloration following exposure to pyrogallol for 96 h. Exposure to 1, 5, or 10 mg/L pyrogallol caused a significant decrease in hematological indices, including red blood cells (RBCs), hemoglobin, hematocrit, white blood cells (WBC), thrombocytes, and large and small lymphocytes in a dose-dependent manner. Several biochemical parameters (creatinine, uric acid, liver enzymes, lactate dehydrogenase, and glucose) were altered in a concentration dependent manner with short term exposures to pyrogallol. Pyrogallol exposure also caused a significant concentration-dependent rise in the percentage of poikilocytosis and nuclear abnormalities of RBCs in catfish. In conclusion, our data suggest that pyrogallol should be considered further in environmental risk assessments of aquatic species.

Abstract
α-Aminoadipic acid (AAA) is a nonproteinogenic amino acid with potential applications in pharmaceutical, chemical and animal feed industries. Currently, AAA is produced by chemical synthesis, which suffers from high cost and low production efficiency. In this study, we engineered Escherichia coli for high-level AAA production by coupling lysine biosynthesis and degradation pathways. First, the lysine-α-ketoglutarate reductase and saccharopine dehydrogenase from Saccharomyces cerevisiae and α-aminoadipate-δ-semialdehyde dehydrogenase from Rhodococcus erythropolis were selected by in vitro enzyme assays for pathway assembly. Subsequently, lysine supply was enhanced by blocking its degradation pathway, overexpressing key pathway enzymes and improving nicotinamide adenine dineucleotide phosphate (NADPH) regeneration. Finally, a glutamate transporter from Corynebacterium glutamicum was introduced to elevate AAA efflux. The final strain produced 2.94 and 5.64 g/L AAA in shake flasks and bioreactors, respectively. This work provides an efficient and sustainable way for AAA production.

Abstract
Background Gallic acid (GA) and pyrogallol are phenolic hydroxyl compounds and have diverse biological activities. Microbial-based biosynthesis, as an ecofriendly method, has been used for GA and pyrogallol production. In GA and pyrogallol biosynthetic pathways, the low hydroxylation activity of p-hydroxybenzoate hydroxylase (PobA) towards 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (3,4-DHBA) limited the high-level biosynthesis of GA and pyrogallol. Results This work reported a high activity PobA mutant (Y385F/T294A/V349A PobA) towards 3,4-DHBA. This mutant was screened out from a PobA random mutagenesis library through a novel naked eye visual screening method. In vitro enzyme assay showed this mutant has a kcat/Km of 0.059 μM−1 s−1 towards 3,4-DHBA, which was 4.92-fold higher than the reported mutant (Y385F/T294A PobA). Molecular docking simulation provided the possible catalytic mechanism explanation of the high activity mutant. Expression of this mutant in E. coli BW25113 (Fʹ) can generate 840 ± 23 mg/L GA from 1000 mg/L 3,4-DHBA. After that, this mutant was assembled into a de novo GA biosynthetic pathway. Subsequently, this pathway was introduced into a 3,4-DHBA-producing strain (E. coli BW25113 (Fʹ)ΔaroE) to achieve 301 ± 15 mg/L GA production from simple carbon sources. Similarly, assembling this mutant into a de novo pyrogallol biosynthetic pathway enabled 129 ± 15 mg/L pyrogallol production. Conclusions This work established an efficient screening method and generated a high activity PobA mutant. Assembling this mutant into de novo GA and pyrogallol biosynthetic pathways achieved the production of these two compounds from glucose. Besides, this mutant has great potential for the production of GA or pyrogallol derivatives. The screening method could be used for other GA biosynthesis-related enzymes. Abstract
The shikimate pathway is a necessary pathway for the synthesis of aromatic compounds. The intermediate products of the shikimate pathway and its branching pathway have promising properties in many fields, especially in the pharmaceutical industry. Many important compounds, such as shikimic acid, quinic acid, chlorogenic acid, gallic acid, pyrogallol, catechol and so on, can be synthesized by the shikimate pathway. Among them, shikimic acid is the key raw material for the synthesis of GS4104 (Tamiflu®), an inhibitor of neuraminidase against avian influenza virus. Quininic acid is an important intermediate for synthesis of a variety of raw chemical materials and drugs. Gallic acid and catechol receive widespread attention as pharmaceutical intermediates. It is one of the hotspots to accumulate many kinds of target products by rationally modifying the shikimate pathway and its branches in recombinant strains by means of metabolic engineering. This review considers the effects of classical metabolic engineering methods, such as central carbon metabolism (CCM) pathway modification, key enzyme gene modification, blocking the downstream pathway on the shikimate pathway, as well as several expansion pathways and metabolic engineering strategies of the shikimate pathway, and expounds the synthetic biology in recent years in the application of the shikimate pathway and the future development direction.

Abstract
Lignocellulosic biomass has great potential as an inedible feedstock for bioplastic synthesis, although its use is still limited compared to current edible feedstocks of glucose and starch. This review focuses on recent advances in the production of biopolymers and biomonomers from lignocellulosic feedstocks with downstream processing and chemical polymer syntheses. In microbial production, four routes composed of existing poly (lactic acid) and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) and the emerging biomonomers of itaconic acid and aromatic compounds were presented to review present challenges and future perspectives, focusing on the use of lignocellulosic feedstocks. Recently, advances in purification technologies decreased the number of processes and their environmental burden. Additionally, the unique structures and high-performance of emerging lignocellulose-based bioplastics have expanded the possibilities for the use of bioplastics. The sequence of processes provides insight into the emerging technologies that are needed for the practical use of bioplastics made from lignocellulosic biomass.

Abstract
10-Deacetylbaccatin III (10-DAB) C10 acetylation is an indispensable procedure for Taxol semi-synthesis, which often requires harsh conditions. 10-Deacetylbaccatin III-10-β-O-acetyltransferase (DBAT) catalyzes the acetylation but acetyl-CoA supply remains a key limiting factor. Here we refactored the innate biosynthetic pathway of acetyl-CoA in Escherichia coli and obtained a chassis with acetyl-CoA productivity over three times higher than that of the host cell. Then, we constructed a microbial cell factory by introducing DBAT gene into this chassis for efficiently converting 10-DAB into baccatin III. We found that baccatin III could be efficiently deacetylated into 10-DAB by DBAT with CoASH and K+ under alkaline condition. Thus, we fed acetic acid to the engineered strain both for serving as a substrate of acetyl-CoA biosynthesis and for alleviating the deacetylation of baccatin III. The fermentation conditions were optimized and the baccatin III titers reached 2, 3 and 4.6 g/L, respectively, in a 3-L bioreactor culture when 2, 3 and 6 g/L of 10-DAB were supplied. Our study provides an environment-friendly approach for the large scale 10-DAB acetylation without addition of acetyl-CoA in the industrial Taxol semi-synthesis. The finding of DBAT deacetylase activity may broaden its application in the structural modification of pharmaceutically important lead compounds.

Abstract
Converting lignin components into a single product is a promising way to upgrade lignin. Here, an efficient biocatalyst was developed to selectively produce gallate from lignin components by integrating three main reactions: hydroxylation, O-demethylation, and aryl side-chain oxidation. A rationally designed hydroxylase system was first introduced into a gallate biodegradation pathway–blocked Rhodococcus opacus mutant so that gallate accumulated from protocatechuate and compounds in its upper pathways. Native and heterologous O-demethylation systems were then used, leading to multiple lignin-derived methoxy aromatics being converted to gallate. Furthermore, an aryl side-chain oxidase was engaged to broaden the substrate spectrum. Consequently, the developed biocatalyst showed that gallate yields as high as 0.407 and 0.630 g of gallate per gram of lignin when alkaline-pretreated lignin and base-depolymerized ammonia fiber explosion lignin were applied as substrates, respectively. These results suggested that this rationally developed biocatalyst enabled the lignin valorization process to be simple and efficient.

Abstract
L-phenylalanine is an important amino acid that is widely used in the fields of food flavors and pharmaceuticals. Apart from L-phenylalanine itself, various commercially valuable chemical compounds can also be generated via the L-phenylalanine biosynthesis pathway. Compared with direct extraction from plants or synthesis by chemical reaction, microbial production of L-phenylalanine -derived compounds can overcome the drawbacks of environmental pollution, low yield, and mixtures of stereoisomeric products. Accordingly, increasing intracellular levels of precursors, deregulating feedback inhibition and transcription repression, engineering global regulators and other effective strategies have been implemented to produce different L-phenylalanine -derived compounds in the excellent chassis host Escherichia coli. Finally, this review highlights principal strategies for improving the production of L-phenylalanine and/or its derivatives in E. coli, and discusses the future outlook for further enhancing the titer and yields of these compounds.

Abstract
Metabolic engineering is a promising approach for the synthesis of valuable compounds. Transcriptional factor-based biosensors are efficient tools to regulate the metabolic pathway dynamically. Here, we engineered the p-coumaric acid responsive regulator PadR from Bacillus subtilis. We found that yveF and yveG, two previously uncharacterized components in the sensor system, showed positive impacts on the regulation of PadR-PpadC sensor system, mostly on assisting the release of the repression by PadR. By site directed PadR engineering, we obtained two mutants, K64A and H38A, which exhibited increased dynamic range and superior sensitivity. To increase the promoter strength of the sensor system and investigate whether the PadR binding boxes can function in a "plug-and-play" manner, a series of hybrid promoters were constructed. Four of them, P1, P2, P7, and P9, showed increased strength compared to PpadC and can be regulated by PadR and p-coumaric acid. The PadR variants and hybrid promoters obtained in this paper would expand the applicability of this sensor system in future metabolic engineering research.

Abstract
Gallic acid (GA) is a naturally occurring polyphenol compound present in fruits, vegetables, and herbal medicines. According to previous studies, GA has many biological properties, including antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. GA and its derivatives have multiple industrial uses, such as food supplements or additives. Additionally, recent studies have shown that GA and its derivatives not only enhance gut microbiome (GM) activities, but also modulate immune responses. Thus, GA has great potential to facilitate natural defense against microbial infections and modulate the immune response. However, the exact mechanisms of GA acts on the GM and immune system remain unclear. In this review, first the physicochemical properties, bioavailability, absorption, and metabolism of GA are introduced, and then we summarize recent findings concerning its roles in gastrointestinal health. Furthermore, the present review attempts to explain how GA influences the GM and modulates the immune response to maintain intestinal health.

Abstract
Engineering microbial cell factories has been widely applied to produce compounds spanning from intricate natural products to bulk commodities. In each case, host robustness is essential to ensure the reliable and sustainable production of targeted metabolites. However, it can be negatively affected by metabolic burden, pathway toxicity, and harsh environment, resulting in a decreased titer and productivity. Enhanced robustness enables host to have better production performance under complicated growth circumstances. Here, we review current strategies for boosting host robustness, including metabolic balancing, genetic and phenotype stability enhancement, and tolerance engineering. In addition, we discuss the challenges and future perspectives on microbial host engineering for increased robustness.

Abstract
Abstract
The shikimate pathway is indispensable for the biosynthesis of natural products with aromatic moieties. These products have wide current and potential applications in food, cosmetics and medicine, and consequently have great commercial value. However, compounds extracted from various plants or synthesized from petrochemicals no longer satisfy the requirements of contemporary industries. As a result, an increasing number of studies has focused on this pathway to enable the biotechnological manufacture of natural products, especially in E. coli. Furthermore, the development of synthetic biology, systems metabolic engineering and high flux screening techniques has also contributed to improving the biosynthesis of high-value compounds based on the shikimate pathway. Here, we review approaches based on a combination of traditional and new metabolic engineering strategies to increase the metabolic flux of the shikimate pathway. In addition, applications of this optimized pathway to produce aromatic amino acids and a range of natural products is also elaborated. Finally, this review sums up the opportunities and challenges facing this field.

Abstract
Numerous value-added chemicals can be produced using xylan as a feedstock. However, the product yields are limited by low xylan utilization efficiency, as well as by carbon flux competition between biomass production and biosynthesis. Herein, a dynamic consolidated bioprocessing strategy was developed, which coupled xylan utilization and yield optimization modules. Specifically, we achieved the efficient conversion of xylan to valuable chemicals in a fully consolidated manner by optimizing the expression level of xylanases and xylose transporter in the xylan utilization module. Moreover, a cell density-dependent, and Cre-triggered dynamic system that enabled the dynamic decoupling of biosynthesis and biomass production was constructed in the yield optimization module. The final shake flask-scale titers of xylonate, produced through an exogenous pathway, and shikimate, produced through an endogenous pathway, reached 16.85 and 3.2 g L-1, respectively. This study not only provides an efficient microbial platform for the utilization of xylan, but also opens up the possibility for the large-scale production of high value-added chemicals from renewable feedstocks.

Abstract
Aromatic N-oxides are valuable due to their versatile chemical, pharmaceutical, and agricultural applications. Natural phenazine N-oxides possess potent biological activities and can be applied in many ways; however, few N-oxides have been identified. Herein, we developed a microbial system to synthesize phenazine N-oxides via an artificial pathway. First, the N-monooxygenase NaphzNO1 was predicted and screened in Nocardiopsis sp. 13-12-13 through a product comparison and gene sequencing. Subsequently, according to similarities in the chemical structures of substrates, an artificial pathway for the synthesis of a phenazine N-oxide in Pseudomonas chlororaphis HT66 was designed and established using three heterologous enzymes, a monooxygenase (PhzS) from P. aeruginosa PAO1, a monooxygenase (PhzO) from P. chlororaphis GP72, and the N-monooxygenase NaphzNO1. A novel phenazine derivative, 1-hydroxyphenazine N'10-oxide, was obtained in an engineered strain, P. chlororaphis HT66-SN. The phenazine N-monooxygenase NaphzNO1 was identified by metabolically engineering the phenazine-producing platform P. chlororaphis HT66. Moreover, the function of NaphzNO1, which can catalyze the conversion of 1-hydroxyphenazine but not that of 2-hydroxyphenazine, was confirmed in vitro. Additionally, 1-hydroxyphenazine N'10-oxide demonstrated substantial cytotoxic activity against two human cancer cell lines, MCF-7 and HT-29. Furthermore, the highest microbial production of 1-hydroxyphenazine N'10-oxide to date was achieved at 143.4 mg/L in the metabolically engineered strain P3-SN. These findings demonstrate that P. chlororaphis HT66 has the potential to be engineered as a platform for phenazine-modifying gene identification and derivative production. The present study also provides a promising alternative for the sustainable synthesis of aromatic N-oxides with unique chemical structures by N-monooxygenase.

Abstract
Metabolic engineering has been enabling development of high performance microbial strains for the efficient production of natural and non-natural compounds from renewable non-food biomass. Even though microbial production of various chemicals has successfully been conducted and commercialized, there are still numerous chemicals and materials that await their efficient bio-based production. Aromatic chemicals, which are typically derived from benzene, toluene and xylene in petroleum industry, have been used in large amounts in various industries. Over the last three decades, many metabolically engineered microorganisms have been developed for the bio-based production of aromatic chemicals, many of which are derived from aromatic amino acid pathways. This review highlights the latest metabolic engineering strategies and tools applied to the biosynthesis of aromatic chemicals, many derived from shikimate and aromatic amino acids, including L-phenylalanine, L-tyrosine and L-tryptophan. It is expected that more and more engineered microorganisms capable of efficiently producing aromatic chemicals will be developed toward their industrial-scale production from renewable biomass.

Abstract
The side streams derived from the palm oil production process, namely palm kernel cake, palm pressed fibre, palm kernel shells and empty fruit bunches, were evaluated as sources of phenolic compounds. Among these streams, kernel cake had the highest total phenolic content (in mg of gallic acid equivalents (GAE) per g of dry sample) with a value of 5.19, whereas the empty fruit bunches had the lowest value (1.79). The extraction time and liquid-to-solid ratio were investigated to optimize the phenolic extraction. Kernel cake exhibited the highest total phenolic content (5.35 mg/g) with a liquid-to-solid ratio of 40:1 during 20 min of extraction. The main phenolic compounds of the extracts deriving from all byproduct streams were also identified and quantified with HPLC-DAD. Pyrogallol, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, gallic acid and ferulic acid were the main compounds found in kernel cake extracts. Empty fruit bunch and pressed fibre extracts were also rich in 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, while pyrogallol was the predominant compound in kernel shell extracts. All extracts showed antioxidant activity as it was indicated from the results of DPPH analysis and subsequently tested in sunflower oil aiming to prolong its shelf life. The addition of 0.8% kernel cake extract increased the induction time of sunflower oil more than 50%. According to the results obtained in this study, kernel cake extracts could be considered as a value-added co-product with a potential application as antioxidants in the food industry.

Abstract
Enzyme promiscuity plays an important role in developing biosynthetic pathways for novel target products. Phenol hydroxylase (PH) from Pseudomonas stutzeri OX1 is capable of ortho-hydroxylation of phenol and cresol isomers into counterpart catechols. A small ferredoxin-like protein PHQ was clustered together with the ph gene cluster in the genome of P. stutzeri OX1, and its function was not known. In this study, we found that the existence of PHQ has a promotion effect on the catalytic efficiency of PH. Then, we tested the substrate range of PH using nine different non-natural substrates. We found that PH was a promiscuous hydroxylase that could catalyze ortho-hydroxylation of several non-natural substrates, including catechol, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid and resorcinol. On this basis, linking the catechol biosynthetic pathway with the hydroxylation reaction catalyzed by PH enabled construction of a novel biosynthetic pathway for the synthesis of pyrogallol. This work not only characterized a well-performed PH, but also provided a promising hydroxylation platform for the production of high-value phenolic compounds.

Abstract
Salicyl alcohol and gentisyl alcohol are two important phenolic alcohols that possess significant biological activities and pharmaceutical properties. Here, we report establishment of novel biosynthetic pathways for microbial production of salicyl alcohol and gentisyl alcohol from renewable feedstocks. We first examined the promiscuity of the carboxylic acid reductase CAR toward salicylic acid and 2,5-DHBA, which enabled efficient synthesis of salicyl alcohol and gentisyl alcohol. Then, we employed a novel salicylic acid 5-hydroxylase to achieve 2,5-DHBA production from salicylic acid. After that, the de novo biosynthetic pathways were assembled and optimized by programming the carbon flux into the shikimate pathway. The final titers of salicyl alcohol and gentisyl alcohol reached to 594.4 mg/L and 30.1 mg/L, respectively. To our knowledge, this work achieved microbial production of salicyl alcohol and gentisyl alcohol for the first time. Our present study also demonstrated application of enzyme promiscuity to establish non-natural biosynthetic pathways for the production of high-value compounds.
