Abstract
The apicomplexa Toxoplasma gondii is capable of actively proliferating in numerous types of nucleated cells, and therefore has a high potential for dissemination and resistance. Thus, the present work aimed to correlate the inoculum concentrations and amount of post-infection parasites with porcine hematological parameters (including biochemistry) through in vitro culture. Porcine blood was incubated with different concentrations of parasites (1.2 × 107, 6/3/1.5 × 106 cells/mL), then the concentrations of red blood cells (RBC) and their morphology, total and differential leukocytes, and free peptides were evaluated. In addition, eight different blood samples analyzed before inoculation, where subsequent multivariate analysis was applied to correlate different variables with trophozoite concentration. The results showed no significant variation (p < 0.05) in the relative levels of free peptides, or the relative percentage of RBC at all the parasite concentrations tested. However, the normalized percentages of leukocytes and neutrophils showed a significant reduction, while those of lymphocytes, eosinophils and monocytes showed the opposite behavior. Semi-automatic processing of images exhibited significant microcytosis and hypochromia. The multivariate analysis revealed a positive correlation between the amount number of protozoa (AP) and the variables: "Red cells" and "Neutrophils", an indifference between the AP and the content of free peptides, and the concentration of monocytes in the samples; and a negative correlation for AP and the percentages of lymphocytes and eosinophils. Our results suggest that specific changes in hematological parameters may be associated with different degrees of parasitemia, demanding a thorough diagnostic process and adequate treatment.

Abstract
Aim To evaluate the biochemical and hematological markers associated with the risk of death due to COVID-19 in a clinical cohort with a severe clinical profile. Methods A retrospective study was conducted among 215 anonymized inpatient records from the Hospital Nacional Almanzor Aguinaga Asenjo, Peru, between April and June 2020. The association between biomarkers and death due to COVID-19 was assessed using Cox regression, with a multivariable modeling of 1) biochemical and 2) hematological markers. Kaplan-Meier analyses and time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curves were calculated for each associated biomarker (p < 0.05). Results Data analysis of 215 inpatient records revealed an overall mortality rate of 51.30% (95% CI 44.70-58.50), a mean age of 63.90 ± 14.10 years, and a median oxygen saturation of 88% (interquartile range 82-92%). The best-fitted biochemical model included higher levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), D-dimer, fibrinogen, urea, and lactate dehydrogenase. Similarly, the best-fitted hematological model included higher absolute neutrophil and prothrombin time, and lower absolute platelet counts. The best area under the curve values in both models were found to be CRP and D-dimer values (>0.74) and the absolute neutrophil count (0.63). Conclusions Some specific biochemical markers outperformed hematological markers. Evaluated hematological counts analyzed in multivariable models proved to be better markers and could be useful to discriminate COVID-19 patients at high risk of death.

Abstract
High consumption of locally produced delicacies could expose nursing mothers to high monosodium glutamate (MSG) levels, frequently used as a necessary condiment in low-income countries. Thus, this study evaluated some novel preliminary changes in renal hormonal receptors, the aquaporin-3 channel, oxidative stress markers, and hematological indices induced by monosodium glutamate in lactating rats. Post-parturition, twenty-four (24) lactating Wistar rats were divided into four (4) groups of six rats each (n = 6). Oral administration of distilled water and MSG started three (3) days postpartum as follows: group 1: distilled water (1 ml/kg BW), group 2: MSG (925 mg/kg BW), group 3: MSG (1850 mg/kg BW), and group 4: MSG (3700 mg/kg BW). At the end of the experiment, which lasted fourteen (14) days, animals were sacrificed and samples of blood and tissues were obtained for biochemical analysis. MSG administration significantly (p < 0.05) increased ROS and MDA, with a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in kidney antioxidants. Serum creatinine, total, conjugated, and unconjugated bilirubin significantly (p < 0.05) increased with MSG administration. The prolactin receptor was significantly reduced (p < 0.05), while the oxytocin receptor and aquaporin-3 channel were significantly (p < 0.05) increased in the MSG-administered groups. There were significant (p < 0.05) changes in the hematological indices of the MSG-administered animals. Thus, the findings of this study suggest that high MSG consumption causes hematological alterations and may alter renal function via increased ROS production and dysregulation of the AQP-3 channel, prolactin, and oxytocin receptors in the kidneys of lactating Wistar rats.

Abstract
There are sex-dependent differences in hematological and biochemical variables in adulthood attributed to the predominant effects of testosterone in males and estrogen in females. The Twin Testosterone Transfer (TTT) hypothesis proposes that opposite-sex females may develop male-typical traits due to exposure to relatively higher levels of prenatal testosterone than same-sex females. Additionally, prenatal testosterone exposure has been suggested as a correlate of current circulating testosterone levels. Consequently, opposite-sex females might exhibit male-typical patterns in their hematological and biochemical variables. Despite this hypothesis, routine laboratory investigations assign the same reference range to all females. Our cross-sectional study, conducted in Tamale from January to September 2022, included 40 twins, comprising 10 opposite-sex (OS) males (25%), 10 OS females (25%), and 20 same-sex (SS) females (50%), all aged between 18 and 27 years. Fasting venous blood samples were collected and analyzed using automated hematology and biochemistry laboratory analyzers. Results indicated that levels of hemoglobin, serum creatinine, gamma-glutamyl transferase, total protein, globulins, and total testosterone were significantly higher in OS males than OS females. Conversely, total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were significantly higher in OS females than OS males. Unexpectedly, levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and total testosterone were significantly higher in SS females than OS females. Contrary to expectations, opposite-sex females did not exhibit male-typical patterns in their hematological and biochemical variables. This suggests that the TTT effect may not occur or may not be strong enough to markedly affect hematological and biochemical variables in OS females.

Abstract
B vitamins improve animal performance through promote a wide range of metabolic pathways in animals as cofactors. Therefore, the impact of B-complex vitamin injection on performance, metabolic diseases, hematological parameters, and antioxidant status in pregnant Sannen goats and their newborn kids during the transition period was investigated. The pregnant goats (3 years old) were randomly divided into two groups: control (No B complex vitamins injection) and B complex vitamins (5 ml B complex vitamins injection per animal). B complex vitamins were injected twice intramuscularly into goats, according to the manufacturer's recommendation, during five- and three-weeks prior kidding. To determine the dry matter intake, feed samples were prepared. Also, metabolic diseases in goats and their offspring were recorded during the study. Blood samples of goats and newborn kids were taken seven days after parturition and measured for B vitamins concentrations, as well as hematological and antioxidant parameters. According to the results, the performance (body weight and dry matter intake) of goats and kids improved in B-complex vitamins group compared to the control group (P < 0.05). In addition, metabolic diseases were reduced in the goats and their offspring treated with B complex vitamins compared to the control group during the transition period (P < 0.05). The levels of cobalamin, pyridoxine, thiamine, folic acid, nicotinic, pantothenic, and unconjugated pteridine increased in the plasma of goats and their children by maternal B complex injection than in the control group during the transition period (P < 0.05). Higher (P < 0.05) levels of red blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit, total antioxidant status, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase in goats' plasma, as well as red blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit, glutathione peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase in kids' plasma treated with B complex vitamins than the control group, were observed (P < 0.05). These results suggest that maternal Bcomplex vitamin injection is required for the improvement of performance, hematological status, and antioxidant status in pregnant goats and their kids.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vancomycin-resistant enterococcus (VRE) was the fastest growing pathogen in Europe in 2022 (+ 21%) but its clinical relevance is still unclear. We aim to identify risk factors for acquired VRE rectal colonization in hematological patients and evaluate the clinical impact of VRE colonization on subsequent infection, and 30- and 90-day overall mortality rates, compared to a matched control group. METHODS A retrospective, single center, case-control matched study (ratio 1:1) was conducted in a hematological department from January 2017 to December 2020. Case patients with nosocomial isolation of VRE from rectal swab screening (≥ 48 h) were matched to controls by age, sex, ethnicity, and hematologic disease. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression compared risk factors for colonization. RESULTS A total of 83 cases were matched with 83 controls. Risk factors for VRE colonization were febrile neutropenia, bone marrow transplant, central venous catheter, bedsores, reduced mobility, altered bowel habits, cachexia, previous hospitalization and antibiotic treatments before and during hospitalization. VRE bacteraemia and Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) occurred more frequently among cases without any impact on 30 and 90-days overall mortality. Vancomycin administration and altered bowel habits were the only independent risk factors for VRE colonization at multivariate analysis (OR: 3.53 and 3.1; respectively). CONCLUSIONS Antimicrobial stewardship strategies to reduce inappropriate Gram-positive coverage in hematological patients is urgently required, as independent risk factors for VRE nosocomial colonization identified in this study include any use of vancomycin and altered bowel habits. VRE colonization and infection did not influence 30- and 90-day mortality. There was a strong correlation between CDI and VRE, which deserves further investigation to target new therapeutic approaches.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Haematological and liver fibrotic markers could be appreciably utilized for effective monitoring of Chronic Hepatitis B viral (HBV) infection, thereby increasing patient's treatment outcome. The objective of this study was to assess the applicability of complete blood count (CBC) and non-invasive liver-fibrotic indices as markers of prognostic outcome and monitoring in HBV infections. RESULTS Significant differences in levels of white cell and differentials counts, red blood cell count, hemoglobin indices, and platelet indices were observed between HBV-infected patients (cases) and uninfected persons (controls). Levels of haemoglobin (Hb), total white blood cells (tWBC), neutrophils, monocytes, platelets, and Platelet Distribution width (PDW) were significantly lower (p < 0.05) in the cases compared to the controls. Total and indirect bilirubin; De-Ritis ratio, Aspartate transaminase to platelet ratio index (APRI) and RDW-to-platelet ratio (RPR) were elevated in cases compared with controls (p-value < 0.05). In a multivariate adjusted model to test the significance of markers, Hemoglobin Index (beta coefficient = - 0.876, p-value < 0.001), NLR (beta coefficient = - 0.839, p-value < 0.001), MPV_10000 (beta coefficient = - 0.333, p-value < 0.001) and Albumin (beta coefficient = - 0.059, p-value = 0.014), were associated with HBV infection status. Receiver operative characteristics curve analysis showed Hemoglobin Index (AUC = 0.744) and MPV_10000 (AUC = 0.730) as better prognostic markers for HBV-infection.

Abstract
Pyrogallol is widely used in several industrial applications and can subsequently contaminate aquatic ecosystems. Here, we report for the first time the presence of pyrogallol in wastewater in Egypt. Currently, there is a complete lack of toxicity and carcinogenicity data for pyrogallol exposure in fish. To address this gap, both acute and sub-acute toxicity experiments were conducted to determine the toxicity of pyrogallol in catfish (Clarias gariepinus). Behavioral and morphological endpoints were evaluated, in addition to blood hematological endpoints, biochemical indices, electrolyte balance, and the erythron profile (poikilocytosis and nuclear abnormalities). In the acute toxicity assay, it was determined that the 96 h median-lethal concentration (96 h-LC50) of pyrogallol for catfish was 40 mg/L. In sub-acute toxicity experiment, fish divided into four groups; Group 1 was the control group. Group 2 was exposed to 1 mg/L of pyrogallol, Group 3 was exposed to 5 mg/L of pyrogallol, and Group 4 was exposed to 10 mg/L of pyrogallol. Fish showed morphological changes such as erosion of the dorsal and caudal fins, skin ulcers, and discoloration following exposure to pyrogallol for 96 h. Exposure to 1, 5, or 10 mg/L pyrogallol caused a significant decrease in hematological indices, including red blood cells (RBCs), hemoglobin, hematocrit, white blood cells (WBC), thrombocytes, and large and small lymphocytes in a dose-dependent manner. Several biochemical parameters (creatinine, uric acid, liver enzymes, lactate dehydrogenase, and glucose) were altered in a concentration dependent manner with short term exposures to pyrogallol. Pyrogallol exposure also caused a significant concentration-dependent rise in the percentage of poikilocytosis and nuclear abnormalities of RBCs in catfish. In conclusion, our data suggest that pyrogallol should be considered further in environmental risk assessments of aquatic species.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent years, several bispecific antibodies (BsAbs) have been introduced that revolutionized the treatment approach for patients with multiple myeloma (MM). In the present study, we sought for conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis with the aim of evaluating the safety and efficacy of BsAbs in MM patients. METHODS PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase databases were systematically searched on June 10, 2022. Two steps of title/abstract and full-text screening were performed for selecting the relevant articles. The primary endpoint was considered to evaluate the safety of BsAbs by examining the rate of hematologic and non-hematologic adverse effects (AEs). The secondary outcome was set at the efficacy of BsAbs through pooling objective response rate (ORR), (stringent) complete response (sCR/CR), very good partial response (VGPR), and partial response (PR). RESULTS Eleven publications with a total of nine evaluable BsAbs were included for qualitative and quantitative data synthesis. Hematologic AEs were more common among patients than non-hematologic events, with the most frequent events being anemia (41.4%), neutropenia (36.4%), and thrombocytopenia (26.3%). The most common non-hematological AE was infection, which occurred in 39.9% of patients, followed by dysgeusia (28.3%), fatigue (26.5%), and diarrhea (25.8%). Besides, 8.1% of patients experienced immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome and neurotoxicity occurred in 5.1% of them. Moreover, 59.8% of patients experienced cytokine release syndrome. The pooled rate of deaths attributable to BsAbs was estimated at 0.1%. In terms of efficacy measures, the ORR was achieved in 62.6% of MM patients, and the pooled rates of sCR/CR, VGPR, and PR were 22.7%, 23.0%, and 12.1%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS In an era with several emerging promising treatments for MM, BsAbs have achieved a high ORR and tolerable AEs in heavily pretreated patients. However, there is still room for developing BsAbs with a lower rate of AEs and capable of bypassing tumor evasion mechanisms.

Abstract
Background Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in Mali. Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infections are very common but are often cofounded with TB because of the similarity of symptoms, which makes the diagnosis difficult. Hematological abnormalities associated with TB have been described, but not with NTM. Therefore, the goal of this study was to compare the hematological parameters of patients infected with TB and NTM infections. Methods A cross-sectional study enrolling TB and NTM participants was conducted in 2018-2020. Five milliliters of venous blood and sputum samples were collected from each participant to determine the hematological parameters using the RUBY CELL-DYN Ruby Version 2.2 ML. A BACTEC MGIT 960 and multiplex reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction were used to distinguish Mycobacterium tuberculosis from NTM, respectively. Results Of the total 90 patients enrolled, there was a decrease in hemoglobin and hematocrit levels in both the groups (P = 0.05). In addition, we found that the percentages of basophil cells (P = 0.01) and mean values of platelets (P = 0.04) were significantly higher in TB patients than those of NTMs. Moreover, the mean of absolute values of eosinophil cells of TB patients was significantly lower than those of NTMs (P = 0.03). Conclusion We found significant statistical differences in basophils, platelets, and eosinophils in differentiating TB and NTM in this pilot study. Future studies with patients at different clinical stages are needed to confirm the hematological profiles of TB and NTM patients.

Abstract
In the present review, the authors, based on the multiple functions performed by the liver, analyze the multiple biochemical and hematological changes as an expression of altered liver function in the horse. The liver performs important metabolic functions related to the synthesis, degradation, and excretion of various substances. Modification of these functions can be evaluated and diagnosed by determining serum concentrations of several serum analytes, including enzymes and other endogenous substances. Hepatocellular enzymes, such as sorbitol dehydrogenase-SDH and glutamate dehydrogenase-GLDH, are released following hepatocellular necrosis. Hepatobiliary enzymes, such as γ-glutamyl transferase-GGT, increase in response to necrosis, cholestasis, and other alterations in bile conducts. Serum concentrations of mainly endogenous and exogenous substances that the liver should synthesize or eliminate, such as proteins (albumin and globulins), bile acids, urea, glucose, total and direct bilirubin, and coagulation factors, and fibrinogen should be included in the liver function test profile. The interpretation of laboratory tests of liver function will allow the diagnosis of functional loss of the organ. Some of the analytes considered provide information on the prognosis of liver disease. This review will provide an accurate and objective interpretation of the common biochemical and hematological tests in use in the diagnosis of equine hepatic disease patients, aiding still further the veterinary activity on the applied equine clinical cases.

Abstract
The acute anti-inflammatory activity of onion peel-derived gold nano-bioconjugate was already established earlier. The current study was aimed to investigate the acute oral toxicity of onion peel-derived gold nano-bioconjugate (GNBC) for safe therapeutic utilization in vivo. The acute toxicity study was carried out in female mice for 15 days and showed no mortality and any abnormal complications. The lethal dose (LD50) was evaluated and found to be higher than 2000 mg/kg. After 15 days, animals were euthanized and hematological, and biochemical analyses were performed. In all hematological and biochemical assays, treated animals did not show significant toxicity when compared to the control group. The body weight, behavior, and histopathological studies showed that GNBC is nontoxic. Thereby, the results suggest that onion peel-derived gold nano-bioconjugate GNBC can be utilized for therapeutic applications in vivo.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Treatment with dasatinib for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) has been associated with development of pleural effusion; however, data regarding its optimal management are limited. We examined treatment patterns and healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) and costs among patients with CML treated with dasatinib who experienced a subsequent pleural effusion. METHODS Adults with CML and ≥1 pharmacy claim for dasatinib in 2015-2018 who experienced pleural effusion after dasatinib were identified using data from claims databases. RESULTS Overall, 123 patients were eligible. After 1 year, of the 38.2% of patients with a dose modification, 72.3% did not switch treatment; among these patients, 70.6% continued treatment. Among patients with a stable dose after pleural effusion (61.8%), 57.9% later switched to another TKI. The mean (SD) duration of dasatinib treatment after pleural effusion was 262.0 (124.0) days for patients with a dose modification versus 149.1 (155.2) days for those with a stable dose (p < 0.001). HCRU and costs were similar between groups. CONCLUSION Dasatinib dose modification after pleural effusion was not always required; however, patients with dose modifications continued therapy for a longer duration with a lower rate of switching to another TKI versus patients who remained on a stable dose.

Abstract
Background Hematological and biochemical values are widely used in veterinary clinics for disease prognosis, nutritional and therapeutic monitoring, as well as in understanding the disease process in farm animals, including equines. Aim This study aims to assess the alterations in hematological and biochemical parameters in pure Arabian horses infested with internal parasites. Methods Samples of feces and blood were collected from 20 adult mares. Fecal samples were proceeded by flotation test. The blood samples were analyzed for hematological and biochemical parameters to determine their means ± standard error (M ± SE). We compared the M ± SE with the reference values cited. Results Infestation percentage was as (%) Parascaris equorum 3 (15%) and 17 (85%) mixed infestation, Strongylus species with P. equorum. The hematology of our Arabian horses shows a little variation of values compared to normal reference values, in hemoglobin level (g/dl), packed cell volume (%), red blood cell count (106/μl), and white blood cells count (103/μl), mean corpuscular volume (fl), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (pg) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (g/dl). In addition, their serum biochemistry showed blood glucose (mg/dl), urea (mg/dl), creatinine (mg/dl), albumin (g/dl), sodium, potassium, and chloride (mEq/l) within normal reference values. Conclusion Our study did not show variation in hematology or chemical values compared to the normal values. We attributed this a result of the quantity and quality of nutrition given to the horses, which compensate for the damage caused by these parasites, so this study may provide useful diagnostic indices for Arabian horses.

Abstract
Around 60% dairy animals developed moderate to severe hepatic lipidosis at the time of parturition or during early lactation stage. Most of clinician suspect the hepatic lipidosis during above time window only. However, negative energy balance or feeding of high concentrate diet can lead to hepatic lipidosis at any phase of life. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the potential for diagnosis of hepatic lipidosis by means of hemato-biochemical parameters and ultrasonography of the liver at any stage of life. Here, ultrasonographic back fat thickness measurement was correlated with ultrasonographic features of hepatic lipidosis. A total 60 buffaloes were included under the study and sampled for hematological and biochemical parameters. Hematological parameters did not exhibit any significant difference between healthy and hepatic lipidosis-affected buffaloes. Biochemical parameters like beta hydroxy butyric acid, non esterified fatty acid, aspartate amino transferase, gamma glutamyl transferase and alkaline phosphatase revealed a significant increase, while triglyceride, cholesterol, and glucose declined significantly in hepatic lipidosis-affected buffaloes. Total protein, albumin, and total bilirubin levels did not exhibit any significant difference. Based on ultrasonographic findings, the hepatic lipidosis-affected buffaloes were further sub divided into mild, moderate, and severe groups. Portal vein diameter and depth of portal vein were also estimated in current study. Ultrasonographic examination could diagnose 53.33% hepatic lipidosis cases in buffaloes. Among it, 37.50% buffalo had mild hepatic lipidosis, 33.33% had moderate hepatic lipidosis, and 29.16% had severe hepatic lipidosis. Depth of portal vein significantly increased in hepatic lipidosis cases. However, portal vein diameter exhibited a non-significant difference in mild, moderate, and severe groups of hepatic lipidosis. Back fat thickness also revealed a non-significant difference in mild, moderate, and severe hepatic lipidosis. Above study indicate that B mode ultrasonography of the liver can be employed to differentiate various grades of hepatic lipidosis in buffaloes. Biochemical parameters like NEFA, BHBA, AST, GGT, ALP, TG, cholesterol, and glucose can be helpful to screen the hepatic lipidosis at farm level.

Abstract
Spirulina platensis is, a freshwater microalga, broadly used worldwide. It not only stimulates the immune systems of aquatic organisms but also provides a protein-rich diet and commonly used in the manufacture of aquafeeds. This study was planned to evaluate the growth performance, hepato-renal, and immune response biomarkers of Spirulina and Betaine on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and their protective effect against infection with Aeromonas hydrophila. O. niloticus juveniles (20.22 ± 0.86 g) were divided into four groups (n = 10 per replicate). For 8 weeks, the first and second groups (TS&TB) were fed with 0.5% and 0.3% concentrations of Spirulina and Betaine supplemented diets, respectively; the third group (TSB) was fed with a Spirulina and Betaine mixed diet; the fourth group was fed with a basal diet (without supplementation, T0), which served as control. Dietary inclusion of Spirulina and Betaine significantly improved (P ˂ 0.05) the weight gain, final weight, and food conversion ratio, especially in the TS group. The activities of hepatic malonaldehyde were unchanged in TS & TSB groups and the muscular significantly decreased (P ˂ 0.05) in the same groups, while both increased in the TB group; meanwhile, levels of glutathione reductase were significantly upregulated in all treated groups. Serum interleukins, TNF- alpha, and IL-10 levels were also significantly reduced in all treatment groups. A significant protective power against pathogenic Aeromonas infection was evidenced in all treated groups. Findings in this study highlight the reputation of Spirulina and Betaine as immunostimulants and protective agents against A. hydrophila infection in O. niloticus.

Abstract
Fasciolosis causes public health problems and economic losses all over the world. The present study aimed to evaluate the synergistic action between Viteselen (anti-oxidant) and specific anti-Fasciola drug [Triclalbendazole (TCBZ)] for improving the body condition of F. gigantica naturally infected sheep with reference to some hematological and biochemical biomarkers in their sera. Animals were divided into five groups include G-1 as control non-infected animals, G-2 to G-5 are Fasciola naturally infected animals. G-2 are non-treated animals, G-3 treated with TCBZ, animals in G-4 were injected by Viteselen and those in G-5 were treated by both TCBZ and Viteselen. The results revealed a significant decrease in mean eggs in feces and F. gigantica circulating antigens (FCAg) in sera of TCBZ treated sheep after the 1st week post treatment. Complete disappearance of eggs from feces of drug treated groups was recorded at 21st d.p.t. While the value of FCAg decreased to negative at 14th d.p.t. The highest significant improvement (p < 0.05) in the estimated hematological parameters (RBCs, Hb and TLC), liver enzymes (AST and ALT), oxidative stress and anti-oxidant markers (TAC, MDA, SOD and GSH) and reproductive hormones (Progesterone and Estradiol) was recorded in animals in G-5 followed by G-3. While non-significant improvement was recorded in animals in G-4 in comparison with those in the control group. This improvement increased with increasing the time post treatment. In conclusion; using of Viteselen in association with specific anti-parasitic drug improved the general health parameters and reproductive performance of the investigated sheep.

Abstract
Glanzmann's Trombasthenia (GT) is a genetic disorder, that develops with a tendency toward bleeding and is characterized by the absence or decrease in platelet aggregation. Surgical bleeding may be difficult to control. Platelet transfusion is the main treatment, albeit refractoriness can occur. We describe the case of a patient with GT and platelet refractoriness, who was submitted to radical prostatectomy and dental extraction. The perioperative treatment with apheresis platelet concentrate and activated recombinant factor seven allowed the procedures to be performed uneventfully. We discuss the complexity of the case and the treatment option.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malaria and schistosomiasis present considerable disease burden in tropical and sub-tropical areas and severity is worsened by co-infections in areas where both diseases are endemic. Although pathogenesis of these infections separately is well studied, there is limited information on the pathogenic disease mechanisms and clinical disease outcomes in co-infections. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of malaria and schistosomiasis co-infections, and the hematologic and blood chemistry abnormalities in asymptomatic adults in a rural fishing community in western Kenya. METHODS This sub-study used samples and data collected at enrollment from a prospective observational cohort study (RV393) conducted in Kisumu County, Kenya. The presence of malaria parasites was determined using microscopy and real-time-PCR, and schistosomiasis infection by urine antigen analysis (CCA). Hematological analysis and blood chemistries were performed using standard methods. Statistical analyses were performed to compare demographic and infection data distribution, and hematologic and blood chemistry parameters based on different groups of infection categories. Clinically relevant hematologic conditions were analyzed using general linear and multivariable Poisson regression models. RESULTS From February 2017 to May 2018, we enrolled 671 participants. The prevalence of asymptomatic Plasmodium falciparum was 28.2% (157/556) and schistosomiasis 41.2% (229/562), with 18.0% (100/556) of participants co-infected. When we analyzed hematological parameters using Wilcoxon rank sum test to evaluate median (IQR) distribution based on malarial parasites and/or schistosomiasis infection status, there were significant differences in platelet counts (p = 0.0002), percent neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils (p < 0.0001 each). Amongst clinically relevant hematological abnormalities, eosinophilia was the most prevalent at 20.6% (116/562), whereas thrombocytopenia was the least prevalent at 4.3% (24/562). In univariate model, Chi-Square test performed for independence between participant distribution in different malaria parasitemia/schistosomiasis infection categories within each clinical hematological condition revealed significant differences for thrombocytopenia and eosinophilia (p = 0.006 and p < 0.0001, respectively), which was confirmed in multivariable models. Analysis of the pairwise mean differences of liver enzyme (ALT) and kidney function (Creatinine Clearance) indicated the presence of significant differences in ALT across the infection groups (parasite + /CCA + vs all other groups p < .003), but no differences in mean Creatinine Clearance across the infection groups. CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrates the high burden of asymptomatic malaria parasitemia and schistosomiasis infection in this rural population in Western Kenya. Asymptomatic infection with malaria or schistosomiasis was associated with laboratory abnormalities including neutropenia, leukopenia and thrombocytopenia. These abnormalities could be erroneously attributed to other diseases processes during evaluation of diseases processes. Therefore, evaluating for co-infections is key when assessing individuals with laboratory abnormalities. Additionally, asymptomatic infection needs to be considered in control and elimination programs given high prevalence documented here.

Abstract
Cadmium is a heavy metal and a non-biodegradable environmental contaminant, and its omnipresence ensures its recurrent exposure to humans and animals. Its intake by chicks leads to fatal implications. Cadmium chloride (CdCl2) because of its bio-accumulative nature is an emerging threat to the poultry industry as well as to the humans which consumes these cadmium-intoxicated chickens. In the current study, the target was to elucidate the toxic effects of CdCl2on body weight, hematological, and biochemical parameters as well as its bioaccumulation in different organs of broiler chicks. Various concentrations of CdCl2 (0, 12, 24, 38, and 48 mg/kg body weight) were administered orally to five groups (A, B, C, D, and E) of broiler chicks, respectively. The biometric screening of the exposed birds was carried out by hematological parameters such as packed cell volume (PCV), total erythrocyte count (TEC), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), total protein, white blood cells (WBC), and hemoglobin (Hb), as well as biochemical parameters superoxide dismutase (SOD), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) with commercially available kits. Metal accumulation in different organs was detected using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The compound exposure produced a varied impact on broiler birds. Hematological parameters showed a significant decrease except for WBC. Biochemical parameters also decreased significantly in a dose-dependent manner. However, it was revealed that the body weight of chickens was not affected considerably after CdCl2 exposure. A direct relationship was detected between the accumulation of metal within tissues (lungs, heart, and flesh) and exposure frequency. It can be deduced that an increase in Cd deposition in tissues may lead to an alteration in hematological-biochemical markers which may significantly contribute to systemic toxicity in broilers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clinical evidence of thiamine-related neuropsychiatric symptoms, including the initial stage, is limited because serum thiamine levels tend to be evaluated only for patients who develop severe neuropsychiatric symptoms suspected to be related to severe thiamine deficiency. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between thiamine decline and neuropsychiatric symptoms, including initial symptoms, and the effect of chemotherapy on serum thiamine levels in gastrointestinal and hematological cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. METHOD We retrospectively identified 87 patients who were diagnosed with gastrointestinal and hematological cancers at our hospital. We evaluated the risk factors associated with neuropsychiatric symptoms, including initial symptoms (neuropsychiatric symptoms), the relationship between the presence of neuropsychiatric symptoms and serum thiamine levels, and changes in serum thiamine levels after chemotherapy. RESULTS Logistic regression analysis identified thiamine decline as a significant factor associated with neuropsychiatric symptoms (p < 0.001, odds ratio = 0.040, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.010-0.163). The Mann-Whitney U test showed that patients with neuropsychiatric symptoms had significantly lower serum thiamine levels (19.5 ± 5.4 ng/mL, n = 39) than patients without neuropsychiatric symptoms (31.9 ± 14.2 ng/mL, n = 48) (p = 0.001). In hematological cancer patients, serum thiamine levels gradually declined after chemotherapy, with the lowest levels at 5-8 weeks (23.5 ± 7.6 ng/mL, P = 0.035 vs. 0 weeks, Wilcoxon rank sum test). CONCLUSION Our study showed that a decrease in serum thiamine levels can be a risk factor for neuropsychiatric symptoms, and chemotherapy can lead to a decrease in serum thiamine levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Calvarial lymphoma is an exceedingly rare phenomenon; the clinical presentation and imaging pattern mimic many diseases of the central nervous system. Several treatment approaches have been undertaken with variable use of surgery plus adjuvant chemotherapy and radiation; an optimal treatment algorithm has yet to be defined. The aim of this study was to better characterize management strategies and patient outcomes. METHODS An illustrative case was presented and a meta-analysis was carried out in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines. MEDLINE and Embase were searched for cases of calvarial lymphoma. Outcomes between patients who underwent open surgery and biopsy only were compared directly. RESULTS In an analysis from 1976 to 2019, 62 patients with a median age of 60 were included. The most common presentations were subcutaneous scalp mass (89%), headaches (26%), and focal neurological deficits (21%). Osteolytic changes on computed tomography were seen in 69% of patients with extension into either the intracranial or extracranial space in 97% of cases. Surgical excision was performed in 41 patients with a remission rate of 85% and a recurrence rate of 5%, which did not vary significantly from patients treated nonsurgically (remission in 75%, P = 0.479; recurrence in 0%, P = 1.000) CONCLUSIONS: In patients presenting with a progressively enlarging scalp mass, calvarial lymphoma should be in the differential diagnosis, as it can be effectively managed with a biopsy followed by chemotherapy and radiation. The role for open surgery may be limited.

Abstract
Exposure to VOCs is linked to health effects ranging from asthma to cancer and to negative impacts on the hematopoietic system. We examined the association between select blood VOC concentrations and hematological measures in a representative sample of the U.S. population from NHANES cycles spanning the years 2005 to 2010. We used Cox regression to assess the association between complete blood count with five-part differential (CBC) parameters and seven select blood VOCs, while addressing low detection rates among VOCs. Tobacco smoke exposure was classified using serum cotinine levels. The not-smoke-exposed group had lower VOC levels for most analytes compared with the smoke-exposed. Correlations between benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) were moderate to strong. Statistical associations were found between benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, and styrene (BTEXS) and hematocrit, hemoglobin, and white blood cell count among the smoke-exposed. Among the not-smoke-exposed, there was an association between BTEX and platelet count. We considered benzene most likely to be associated with higher levels of CBC concentrations. Our findings suggest VOC levels currently found in the general U.S. population are associated with changes in hematological measures, and smoking could be a contributor.

Abstract
Background Numerous studies have concentrated on high-dose radiation exposed accidentally or through therapy, and few involve low-dose occupational exposure, to investigate the correlation between low-dose ionizing radiation and changing hematological parameters among medical workers. Methods Using a prospective cohort study design, we collected health examination reports and personal dose monitoring data from medical workers and used Poisson regression and restricted cubic spline models to assess the correlation between changing hematological parameters and cumulative radiation dose and determine the dose-response relationship. Results We observed that changing platelet of 1265 medical workers followed up was statistically different among the cumulative dose groups (P = 0.010). Although the linear trend tested was not statistically significant (Ptrend = 0.258), the non-linear trend tested was statistically significant (Pnon-linear = 0.007). Overall, there was a correlation between changing platelets and cumulative radiation dose (a change of βa 0.008 × 109/L during biennially after adjusting for gender, age at baseline, service at baseline, occupation, medical level, and smoking habits; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.003,0.014 × 109/L). Moreover, we also found positive first and then negative dose-response relationships between cumulative radiation dose and changing platelets by restricted cubic spline models, while there were negative patterns of the baseline service not less than 10 years (− 0.015 × 109/L, 95% CI = − 0.024, − 0.007 × 109/L) and radiation nurses(− 0.033 × 109/L, 95% CI = − 0.049, − 0.016 × 109/L). Conclusion We concluded that although the exposure dose was below the limit, medical workers exposed to low-dose ionizing radiation for a short period of time might have increased first and then decreased platelets, and there was a dose-response relationship between the cumulative radiation dose and platelets changing.

Abstract
At least 10% of patients with pulmonary fibrosis, whether idiopathic or secondary, present heritable pulmonary fibrosis suspected on familial aggregation of pulmonary fibrosis, specific syndromes or early age of diagnosis. Approximately 30% of those patients have an identified mutation mostly in telomere related genes (TRG) more rarely in surfactant homeostasis or other genes. TRG mutation may be associated with hematological and hepatic diseases that may worsen after lung transplantation requiring a specific care and adapted immunosuppression. Surfactant genes mutations are usually associated with ground-glass opacities and cysts on CT scan and may improve with steroids, hydroxychloroquine or azithromycin. Moreover relatives should benefit from a genetic analysis associated with a clinical evaluation according to the gene involved. Genetics of pulmonary fibrosis raise specific problems from diagnosis, therapy or genetic counseling varying from one gene to another.

Abstract
Lead is one of the utmost contaminated and dangerous heavy metals. This toxicant ultimately enters into the human body through the food chain and accumulated in the body because the animal/human body has not an appropriate mechanism to excrete it from the body. The main objective of the present research was to assess the toxicological effects of lead on body weights, biochemical, and hematological parameters of chickens and also to measure its bioaccumulation in the brain. Lead acetate was administrated orally at doses of 0, 71, 142, 213, and 284 mg/kg of body weight of chicken for groups A, B, C, D, and E, respectively. Along with determination of biometry of all experimental chicks, hematological [hemoglobin (Hb), packed cell volume (PCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), total erythrocyte count (TEC), white blood cells (WBCs), leukocyte differential count (LDC)] and biochemical [low density lipoprotein (LDL), total protein, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT)] parameters were measured. The present study showed that the bodyweight of chickens was not affected significantly by lead acetate exposure. The levels of MCHC, PCV, TEC, Hb, LDL, HDL, and total protein were found to be significantly decreased while WBC, LDC, and ALT profile were enhanced due to administration of lead acetate. Bioaccumulation of lead acetate was found to be higher in the brain. We conclude that the chronic administration of lead acetate affected the blood and biochemical profile of exposed chicken. These effects might be due to the accumulation of the chemical in certain vital organ(s). However, further studies in the future are suggested to refine such findings.

Abstract
Biological evaluation of exopolysaccharides (EPS) produced by wild type and mutant Lactobacillus delbureckii (EPSWLD and EPSMLD) was investigated. Varying degrees of functional groups associated with polysaccharides were present thus confirming the EPS. The EPSs had strong antioxidant potential in a dose dependent (0.5–10 mg/mL) manner. EPSWLD and EPSMLD exhibited the highest 1,1-diphemy 1-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) activity (73.4 % and 65.6 %), total antioxidant activity (1.80 % and 1.42 %), H2O2 scavenging activity (88.5 % and 78.6 %) and Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) (1.89 % and1.81 %) at 10 mg/mL respectively. WLD and MLD were highly susceptible to chloramphenicol, cotrimoxazole, tetracycline, erythromycin and ceftazidine and resistant to cefuroxime, gentamicin and cloxacillin. The EPSs had antibacterial activity against the test pathogens. B. subtilis and S. aureus had the highest susceptibility (26.0 mm and 23.0 mm). EPSMLD modulate the highest IgG, IgA and IgM production (68–126 mg/dL and 67–98 mg/dL and 64–97 mg/dL) in the treated tumor induced mice (TTIM). EPSWLD and EPSMLD exhibited reduction capability on the CEA level (3.99–4.35 ng/L and 4.12–4.23 ng/L) of the TTIM. EPSWLD TTIM had the highest amount of RBC, WBC and PCV (5.6 × 1012%, 68000% and 42%). The EPS increased the lifespan of TTIM. In conclusion EPSWLD and EPSMLD had strong biological potential with pharmacological and neutraceutical activity.

Abstract
Yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco) has been an economically important freshwater species in China because of its good meat quality. In present, the high-density breeding industry has suffered great damage from bacterial infections, in especial, the rapid illness and death of fish caused by bacterial septicemia leads to huge economic losses. Therefore, it is urgent and important to identify pathogenic bacteria and study its pathogenicity. In this study, we isolated a bacterial strain from the yellow catfish with typical septicemia and named it E. 719, then, by morphological observations, regression infection, biochemical identification, 16S rDNA sequence analysis and triple PCR identification, E. 719 was determined to be Edwardsiella ictaluri. Further, we infected yellow catfish with E. ictaluri to study its effects on mortality rate, hematological, histopathological disturbances and expression of immune genes. The mortality results showed that E. ictaluri was highly pathogenic, all infected fish died after 14 days post injection, and the distribution of bacteria in body kidney, spleen, liver, head kidney and brain of fish was continuously detected by measuring the amount of bacteria in the tissues. In addition, the number of red blood cells decreased significantly with the time of infection, while the number of white blood cells and thrombocytes increased. In particular, the number of monocytes and neutrophils increased significantly in the differential leucocyte count (DLC). Histopathologic changes observed by HE staining showed similar results, gill, intestine, spleen and head kidney showed obvious inflammation, bleeding and necrosis. Besides, checking by real time quantitative RT-PCR assays, in both spleen and head kidney tissues which were the major immune organs, mRNA expressions of immune gene IL-1β, TNF-α, and MR significantly increased in the early and middle stages of infection, which suggested that the infection of E. ictaluri caused a strong immune response in yellow catfish. This study provides a preliminary basis for the diagnosis and treatment of pathophysiology septicemia in yellow catfish induced by E. ictaluri.

Abstract
Clarias gariepinus, weighing 119.18 ± 5.21 g, were exposed to 0%, 20%, 40%, and 60% of the LC50 lead nitrate, Pb(NO3)2, which represents the following treatments 0 (control), 16, 32, and 48 mg/l, respectively, for a period of 10 and 20 days. The results showed that the bioaccumulation of Pb(NO3)2 in gills were significantly increased (p < 0.05) after 10 days having 0.17 ± 0.07, 5.05 ± 1.04, 6.01 ± 0.82, and 9.61 ± 1.76 mg/100 g wet weight, respectively, for the treatments. However, after 20 days these values increased ((0.17 ± 0.07, 4.34 ± 1.27, 10.83 ± 0.97, and 19.18 ± 2.40 mg/100 g) for 0%, 20%, 40%, and 60% of LC50 Pb(NO3)2 respectively. There was an increase with each increasing concentration level of Pb(NO3)2 as compared with that of the control group. The accumulation of Pb(NO3)2 in the liver, showed a significant increase (p < 0.05) with the increasing period of exposed and Pb concentration with LC50 values ranging between 3.32 ± 0.91 and 4.42 ± 0.78 after 10 days as compared with that of the control group 0.08 ± 0.02 mg/100 g wet weight. Although white muscles and skin displayed lower values of bioaccumulation than gills and liver after 10 days, after 20 days the results were slightly more increased in the white muscles than in the skin. However, the observed pattern of increase was the same compared to that of the control group. Therefore, hematological parameters, such as red blood cells (RBCs), hemoglobin (Hb), and hematocrit (Hct) showed significant (p < 0.05) concentration-dependent decreases in fish exposed to Pb(NO3)2 during both periods. However, the values of white blood cells (WBCs) showed a significant reduction when levels of Pb concentration increased. Hepatic enzyme activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) displayed a significant increase with increasing concentrations and exposure time.

Abstract
Background Arjunolic acid (AA) is a potent phytochemical with wider pharmacological activities. Despite potential medicinal properties on various in vitro and in vivo studies, there is still a dearth of scientific data related to its safety profile and toxicological parameters. The current study aimed to investigate acute toxicity of AA in normal female Sprague Dawley rats. Methods In this study, AA was administered orally at an individual dose of 300 and 2000 mg/kg body weight to group 1 and 2 respectively, while group 3 served as normal control. All the animals were observed for 2 weeks to determine any behavioral and physical changes. On day 15, blood was collected for hematological and biochemical investigation, later animals from all the three groups were euthanized to harvest and store essential organs for histopathological analysis. Four different staining techniques; hematoxylin and eosin, Masson trichrome, Periodic acid Schiff and Oil O Red were used to investigate any alterations in different tissues through microscopical observation. Results The results of the study showed no morbidity and mortality at two different dosage of AA treatment. Daily food & water intake, body weight, relative organ weight, hematological and biochemical parameters were detected to be normal with no severe alteration seen through microscopical investigation in the structure of harvested tissues. Our findings support the safety profile of AA, which was well tolerated at higher dose. Thus, an in-detail study on the subacute disease model is warranted.

Abstract
Recently, the residues of some common and widely used herbicides (acetochlor, bispyribac-sodium, bentazon, bensulfuron-methyl, halosulfuron-methyl, and quinclorac) were detected in the surface water, soil, sediments, and fish tissues as the agricultural drainage problems. In this study, juveniles of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus were exposed to sub-lethal concentrations of these herbicides as 2.625, 0.800, 36.00, 2.50, 1.275, and 11.250 mg/l for acetochlor, bispyribac-sodium, bentazon, bensulfuron-methyl, halosulfuron-methyl, and quinclorac respectively for 96 h. Some hemato-biochemical parameters were evaluated. In comparison with the control group, sub-lethal concentrations of all tested herbicides induced alterations in the shape of erythrocytes. Also, in all tested herbicides, hematological parameters of exposed fish exhibited a significant decrease in red blood cell count except bentazon. However, all tested herbicides showed an insignificant reduction in mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration and total white blood cells except bensulfuron-methyl. For biochemical parameters, most tested herbicides induced a significant increase in levels of cholesterol, albumin, globulin, albumin/globulin ratio, activity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and total plasma protein (only with acetochlor), urea, and creatinine (except bentazon and halosulfuron-methyl that exhibited non-significant decrease in creatinine level) compared with the control. In conclusion, the fish blood profiles can be used as good biomarkers for laboratory study to assess the toxicity of the tested rice herbicides at a sub-acute level especially acetochlor on O. niloticus. Abstract
Citrus aurantifolia (Christm.) Swingle (syn. C. MEDICA var. ACIDA Brandis) (family: Rutaceae) essential oil is one of the cheapest oils found in local markets. Although, it is generally accepted as non-toxic to vital organs and cells, majority of people are cynical about it usage. Herein, the present study reports the chemical composition and in vivo oral toxicity study of unripe C. aurantifolia essential oil found in Ghana. The toxicity of C. aurantifolia essential oil extract was investigated via oral administration using two methods: The acute toxicity single dose study (SDS) and the repeated dose method. The oil exhibited no acute toxicity but in the sub-chronic studies, the effects was dose and time-dependent. Chemical profile investigation of the oil showed 9 constituent of phytochemicals (Germacrene isomers (61.2%), Pineen (14%), Linalool dimmer (2.9%), Bornane (11%), Citral (2.9%), Anethole (1.5%), Anisole (1.1%), Safrole (0.3%) and Demitol (0.6%)). Histopathological studies revealed conditions such as necrosis, edema and inflammatory reaction in the liver, spleen and kidneys. Marginal upsurge of biochemical parameters above normal and elevated levels of lymphocytes (35.20–46.40 g/dL) demonstrated mild toxicity among the 100 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg dose groups at the sub-chronic stage. Low levels of hemoglobin (13.60 to 12.70 g/dL), MCV (34.20–24.0 fL), MCH (40.20–36.40 g/dL) along with high levels of liver enzymes confirmed the mild toxicity of the oil at sub-chronic stage. These results demonstrate that, despite consideration of lime essential oil as safe, it can have mild hematotoxic, nephrotoxic and hepatotoxic effects.

Abstract
The current study was conducted with a mathematical model to investigate the appropriate iron supplementation by analyzing growth performance, hematological parameters, nutrient utilization, organ development, and Fe-containing enzyme activity in Pekin ducks. A total of 1120 ducks (1-day-old; 50.62 ± 0.20 g) were randomly allotted to seven groups with eight replicates of 20 ducks per replicate. Ducks were fed either a low-iron diet or basal diets supplemented with 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 mg Fe/kg from iron sulfate, respectively. The results showed that iron deficiency decreased body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), red blood cell count (RBC), hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Hct), mean cell volume (MCV), the apparent utilization of energy and dry matter, the weight of duodenum, jejunum, and ileum but increased feed conversion ratio (F/G) (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, birds in low-iron groups showed an increase in oxidative stress evidenced by the decreased catalase (CAT) activities and production of malonaldehyde (MDA) (P < 0.05). On the contrary, diets supplemented with iron significantly improved the growth performance, in different ages, and achieved the best values in group 4 which supplemented 60 mg Fe/kg (P < 0.05). Also, iron supplementation increased the apparent utilization of energy and dry matter but decreased the utilization of iron in ducks at 35 days of age (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the hematological and intestine Fe-containing enzyme activities were improved with iron up to an optimal level (P < 0.05) at 14 and 35 days. In conclusion, iron deficiency impaired growth performance, physiological indexes, nutrient utilization, and antioxidant system, while dietary 71.25~82.80 mg/kg iron for starter ducks and 75.00~89.41 mg/kg iron for grower ducks were suggested to improve growth performance.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the ZAP-70 and CD38 expressions and their combined expressions in Sudanese B-CLL patients and their relationships with clinical and hematological characteristics as well as the disease staging at presentation. Results In the present cross-sectional descriptive study, analysis of ZAP-70 expression showed that 36/110 (32.7%) patients positively expressed ZAP-70 and insignificant higher presentation in intermediate and at advanced stages as well as no correlation was seen with hematological parameters and clinical features compared with negatively ZAP-70, on the other hand, 41/110 (37.3%) were CD38+ and no significant correlation was shown with the stage at presentation, clinical characteristics (except Splenomegaly, P = 0.02) and hematological parameters. However, in combined expressions of both ZAP-70 and CD38 together, 20/110 (18.2%) were concordantly ZAP-70+/CD38+, 53/110 (48.2%) concordantly ZAP-70−/CD38− and 37/110 (33.6%) either ZAP-70+ or CD38+, and these three groups showed insignificant correlation with clinical (except Splenomegaly, P = 0.03) and hematological parameters, and the stage at presentation. Our data showed the combined analysis of these two markers, lead to classify our patients into three subgroups (either concordant positive, negative or discordant expressions) with statistically insignificant correlation with clinical presentation (except Splenomegaly), hematological parameters and stage at presentation of B-CLL patients. Abstract
The ameliorative effects of dietary natural compounds have drawn increasing attention. Dietary antioxidant is considered a common practice adopted in traditional and alternative medicine. The current study was considered to assess the ameliorative effect of grape seed extract on dexamethasone-induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Rats were injected with dexamethasone, (0.1 mg/kg; i.m.), three times per week, for 30 days. The other groups; dexamethasone (0.1 mg/kg) and grape seed extract at a dose of 200 and 400 mg/kg were given orally to rats, respectively. Dexamethasone treatment resulted in a significant elevation in liver function markers activities, lipid profile, and hematological alterations; also, a remarkable increase in hepatic lipid peroxidation marker whereas decreased antioxidant activities in rats. However, administration of grape seed extract resulted in a reversal of dexamethasone-induced lipid peroxidation, antioxidant enzyme activities, liver function markers and lipid profile, and hematological alterations. Moreover, grape seed extract demonstrated preventive action against dexamethasone-induced histopathological changes in rat liver tissues. In conclusion, grape seed extract exhibited a protective effect in rats against oxidative stress, hyperlipidemia and hematological alterations induced by dexamethasone.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the clinical presentation and hematological profile among young (≤ 55 years) and old (> 55 years) chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients in Sudan. RESULT In the present cross-sectional descriptive study, out of 110 cases studied, among them 31 (28.2%) were young (≤ 55 years) patients with mean age 48 years, and 79 (71.8%) were elder patients (> 55 years) with mean age 66 years, the overall mean age was 62.97 ± 12.06 with range (22-85 years), and 79 (71.8%) were males and 31 (28.2%) were females (M:F = 2.6:1) (P = 0.000). (7.3%) were asymptomatic, 61 (55.5%) presented with nonspecific complains. Generalized lymphadenopathy was seen in 52 (47.27%) with elder predominance (P = 0.03). Splenomegaly, hepatomegaly, thrombocytopenia and anemia were seen in 54 (49.1%), 14 (12.7%), 43 (39.1%) and 38 (34.5%) of patients respectively with male predominance. 54 (49.1%) and 42 (38.18%) of patients presented at Rai high risk and Binet C stages respectively with nearly same age and sex distribution. CLL in Sudan is a disease of elders, same as seen in literature, with high male to female ratio. In general hematological parameters means were noted to be distributed equally according to age and sex groups. Majority of patients were presented with nonspecific symptoms and nearly half of patients presented at late stages as reported in most developing countries.

Abstract
Chronic exposures to toxic trace metals have hazardous effects on human health, especially exposure to lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd). Blood Pb and Cd reflect toxicity on human health. A total of 267 hospitalized patients, of which 158 were from Guiyu (exposed group) in China, and 109 from Jinping (reference group), were recruited in this study. Blood Pb and Cd were measured by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Blood Pb and Cd levels from the exposed group were both higher than in the reference group. Blood Pb levels are positively associated with blood Cd levels from the two groups. Blood Pb and Cd levels are associated with elevated hematological and hepatic parameters in patients from the exposed and reference groups. The results suggest toxic trace metals may increase liver metabolic burden, inducing abnormal liver function.

Abstract
Background In patients with hematological malignancies, febrile neutropenia (FEN) is the most frequent complication and the most important cause of mortality. Various risk factors have been identified for severe infection in neutropenic patients. However, to the best of our knowledge, it is not defined whether there is a change in the risk of febrile neutropenia according to seasons. The first aim of study was to determine the difference in frequency of febrile neutropenic episodes (FNEs) according to months and seasons. The second aim was to document isolated pathogens, as well as demographical and clinical characteristics of patients. Methods In the study, 194 FNEs of 105 patients who have been followed with hematological malignancies between June 2013 and May 2014 were evaluated retrospectively. Results Although the number of FNEs increased in autumn, there was no significant difference in frequency of FNEs between months (p = 0.564) and seasons (p = 0.345). There was no isolated pathogen in 54.6% of FNEs. In 45.4% of 194 FNEs, pathogens were isolated. Of all pathogens, 50.4% were gram negative bacteria, 29.2% were gram positive bacteria, 13.3% were viruses, 5.3% were fungi, and 1.8% were parasites. Conclusıons The frequency of FEN does not change according to months or seasons. Also, the relative proportions of different pathogens in the cause of FEN do not vary according to seasons.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different levels of NDF in high-concentrate diets on performance and aspects ruminal, blood, and carcass parameters of finishing lambs. Twenty-four lambs, with initial BW of 24 ± 3 kg, were randomly divided into individual pens, in a completely randomized design, comprising three treatments with eight repetitions each. The treatments consisted of dietary levels of 15%, 20%, and 25% of NDF, based on DM. The diets were composed of corn, soybean meal, minerals, and corn silage and were offered twice a day, with daily control of what was offered and refused, to determine dry matter intake (DMI). The animals were weighed weekly and slaughtered after 50 days of confinement. Performance evaluations, blood parameters, carcass, and ruminal parameters were evaluated. Lambs fed with lower dietary fiber had better carcass yield (P < 0.005). Blood count, blood biochemical parameters, rumen short-chain fatty acid production and protozoan population were not affected by the dietary NDF level. It was concluded that in high-concentrate diets with 15% NDF resulting in better weight gain of the animals in the confinement, good carcass yields without the animal having altered health and ruminal parameters.

Abstract
PURPOSE Hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation during immunosuppressive therapy is common in patients with hematological malignancies, even in case of resolved infection. Prophylaxis of HBV reactivation is universally recommended in stem cell transplant (SCT) recipients and patients treated with anti-CD20 agents (i.e., rituximab). Despite its well-established favorable safety profile, lamivudine (LAM) use in prophylaxis has been debated because of the possible emergence of resistant viral strains. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of LAM in preventing HBV reactivation in allogeneic SCT recipients with a resolved HBV infection. METHODS Patients who received first allogeneic SCT in years 2009-2016 were evaluated. Sixty-three patients with resolved infection received LAM prophylaxis and were included in the study. Baseline and post-SCT characteristics were recorded, including rituximab exposure, length of LAM prophylaxis, and time from transplant to the last clinical and virological follow-up. RESULTS Overall, 39 patients (62%) were male, 39 (62%) had acute myeloid leukemia, 38 (60%) received transplant from haploidentical donor, 29 (53%) received myeloablative conditioning, and 15 (24%) received rituximab post-transplant. Median clinical follow-up was 24 months after SCT (range 0.3-97); median virological follow-up 16 months (range 0.3-78), and median length of LAM prophylaxis of 14.5 months (range 0.3-78). No patient experienced HBV reactivation while on LAM prophylaxis. One patient experienced reactivation 8 months after discontinuing prophylaxis. CONCLUSIONS In this high-risk population, LAM prophylaxis was effective in preventing HBV reactivation in patients with resolved infection. It should be considered a reasonable first-line prophylactic agent to be administered in this setting.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anemia in pregnancy may not only be associated with maternal morbidity and mortality but can also be detrimental to the fetus. A definitive diagnosis of anemia is a pre-requisite to unravelling possible cause(s), to allow appropriate treatment intervention. It is hypothesised that measured hemoglobin (HGB), complemented by biochemical and other hematological parameters would enhance anemia diagnosis. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study among 400 pregnant women comprising 253 anemic and 147 non-anemic pregnant women, attending an antenatal clinic at Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, Ghana. Venous blood was collected and hemoglobin genotype, complete blood count and biochemical parameters [ferritin, iron, total iron binding capacity (TIBC), transferrin saturation (TfS), C-reactive protein (CRP) and bilirubin] were determined. Thick blood films were prepared for malaria parasitemia, while early morning stool and midstream urine samples were examined for enteric and urogenital parasites, respectively. RESULTS There were significantly reduced levels of HGB (p < 0.0001), HCT (p < 0.0001), MCV (p < 0.0001), iron (0.0273), ferritin (p = 0.018) and transferrin saturation (0.0391) and increased WBC (p = 0.006), RDW (p = 0.0480), TIBC (p = 0.0438) and positivity of CRP in anemic, compared to non-anemic pregnant women. Anemic women were associated with increased proportion of hemoglobinopathies (AS, SS and SC), Plasmodium falciparum, Schistosoma hematobium and intestinal parasite infections. CONCLUSION Anemic pregnant women are associated with a significant derangement in hematological and iron indices that implicate iron deficiency. This was influenced by hemoglobinopathies and parasitic infections.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Pakistan has a population of over 198 million making it the world's sixth populous country. However, operational population-based cancer registries in Pakistan are lacking. Limited data are available based on institutional or Karachi Cancer Registry from Karachi; however, no exclusive registry for hematological malignancies is established till date. Hence, we decided to conduct a database analysis to determine the frequencies of various hematological cancers in our tertiary care center in Karachi. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective assessment of 366 patients presented to Hematology Department, Liaquat National Hospital and Medical College from May 2012 to May 2016 with confirmed diagnosis of hematological cancers was performed. Data were retrieved from hospital-based tumor registry. All pro forma was filled by qualified medical research officer, which included demographic data as age, gender, history, disease type, and its stage at presentation. RESULTS: Male gender was predominant and accounted for 69.9% (n = 256) and female accounted for 30.0% (n = 110) of the total cases with the male-to-female ratio of ~2:1. The mean ages of female and male patients were 42.9 ± 20.7 and 49.7 ± 18.1 years with the median age of 45 and 51.5 years, respectively. In males, the three most frequent malignancies were chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) (16%), acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) (12.8% of each). In females, AML was the most common cancer accounting for 21.8% followed by CML (18.1%) and ALL (10%). CONCLUSIONS: Our institution-based tumor registry indicates CML and AML were the most common cancers in males and females, respectively, followed by ALL. Chronic lymphoid leukemia, unlike in the West, is seen infrequently in our population. National and provisional hematological tumor registry will be beneficial for future health planning and research.

Abstract
Objective: Hepatitis is a serious health concern with a high rate of mortality and morbidity world over. Saudi Arabia also has its course of the disease incidence. The data on the prevalence of the disease is still limiting. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of hepatitis B virus [HBV] and hepatitis C virus [HCV] infection in the Jazan region and study its effects on hematological and hepatic parameters. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at premarital screening centre located in King Fahd Central Hospital, Jazan, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A total of 7,826, Saudi couples undertaking premarital screening from Jazan region, were enrolled in the study and screened between January 2014 and June 2015 for hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus. Complete blood counts and hepatic profile were carried out for individuals who were Hepatitis B and or C virus positive. Results: A higher prevalence of hepatitis virus infection in male participants [HBV 1.9%; HCV 0.4%] than in females [HBV 1.43%; HCV 0.2%] was seen. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte (PLR) ratios were significantly decreased among HBV- and HCV-infected patients. The concentration of hepatic enzymes showed a statistically significant increase in seropositive individuals. The levels of albumin were significantly decreased in individuals with hepatitis B and C when compared with the control group Conclusions: The study concludes that the prevalence of HBV infection among Saudi subjects in Jazan was higher than the prevalence of HCV infection, and both HBV and HCV were higher in men than in women.

Abstract
The present study investigated the effects of dietary Spirulina platensis supplementation on growth performance, hematological and serum biochemical parameters, hepatic antioxidant status, immune responses and resistance to the pathogen infection in Coral trout Plectropomus leopardus. The fish were fed for 8-week with diets containing different levels of S. platensis: 0% (C), 2% (SP2), 4% (SP4), 6% (SP6), 8% (SP8) and 10% (SP10) as treatment groups, followed by a Vibrio harveyi infection test for 14 d. The study indicated that dietary supplementation with Spirulina platensis could significantly improve growth performance, and the highest weight gain rate (WGR) and specific growth rate (SGR) were observed in group SP10 (P < .05). Red cell count (RBC), white cell count (WBC), hemoglobin (Hb) and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) in the S. platensis supplemented groups were significantly higher than those of group C (P < .05). However, the levels of cholesterol, triglyceride and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents, and superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activities decreased with the increasing of dietary S. platensis levels. Compared with group C, the lysozyme (LYZ) and respiratory burst activities (RBA), and immunoglobulin (Ig) and complement contents in group SP4, SP6, SP8 and SP10 increased significantly than those of group C respectively (P < .05). After challenge with V. harveyi, the survival rate in group SP4, SP6, SP8 and SP10 was significantly higher than that of group C, and the highest survival rate was in group SP10 (P < .05). These results indicated that P. leopardus fed a diet supplemented with S. platensis (especially at 10%) could significantly promote its growth performance, improve its hepatic antioxidant status, and enhance its immune ability and resistance to V. harveyi infection.

Abstract
This study investigated the toxicity of rats exposed to lead acetate (AcPb) during the second phase of brain development (8-12 days postnatal) in hematological and cerebral parameters. Moreover, the preventive effect of zinc chloride (ZnCl2) and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) was investigated. Pups were injected subcutaneously with saline (0.9% NaCl solution), ZnCl2 (27 mg/kg/day), NAC (5 mg/kg/day) or ZnCl2 plus NAC for 5 days (3rd-7th postnatal days), and with saline (0.9% NaCl solution) or AcPb (7 mg/kg/day) in the five subsequent days (8th-12th postnatal days). Animals were sacrificed 21 days after the last AcPb exposure. Pups exposed to AcPb presented inhibition of blood porphobilinogen-synthase (PBG-synthase) activity without changes in hemoglobin content. ZnCl2 pre-exposure partially prevented PBG-synthase inhibition. Regarding neurotoxicity biomarkers, animals exposed to AcPb presented a decrease in cerebrum acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and an increase in Pb accumulation in blood and cerebrum. These changes were prevented by pre-treatment with ZnCl2, NAC, and ZnCl2 plus NAC. AcPb exposure caused no alteration in behavioral tasks. In short, results show that AcPb inhibited the activity of two important enzymatic biomarkers up to 21 days after the end of the exposure. Moreover, ZnCl2 and NAC prevented the alterations induced by AcPb.

Abstract
Blood is promptly affected by environmental pollutants and toxicants that can cause many metabolic disorders. The high level of fluoride acts as a potential pollutant, insecticide and rodenticide with very high toxicity, associated with the hematological damage. This study aimed to determine the toxicity of Sodium Fluoride on hematological parameters in Oryctolagus cunniculus. Twenty rabbits were acclimatized and divided in to control group and three experimental groups.Experimental group-I, II and III were treated with 10, 30 and 50 mg/kg body weight doses of Sodium Fluoride orally. Various blood parameters such as TEC, Hb, HCT, MCV, MCH, MCHC, TLC and PLT count were investigated. Result findings showed that values of blood indices in experimental groups were significantly lower than the control group. Oneway ANOVA was applied for statistical analysis. The outcomes of the current studies indicated the reduction in RBC counts (anemia), leukocyte count (leukocytopenia), monocytosis, eosinopenia, neutrophilia and thrombocytosis on fluoride intoxication. Hematological disruptions like microcytic hypochromic anemia and decreased leukocyte count may be linked to the inflammatory effects of Sodium Fluoride on lymphatic organs.

Abstract
Although hematological abnormalities have been described among patients with influenza virus infection, little is known about their impact on the outcome of the patients. The aim of this study was to assess the frequency and clinical impact of severe hematological abnormalities in patients with confirmed influenza virus infection. This was an observational retrospective study including all adult patients with diagnosis of influenza virus infection hospitalized from January to May 2016 in our institution. Influenza virus infection was diagnosed by means of rRT-PCR assay performed on respiratory samples. Poor outcome was defined as a composite endpoint in which at least one of the following criteria had to be fulfilled: (a) respiratory failure, (b) SOFA ≥2, or (c) death. Two hundred thirty-nine patients were included. Applying the HLH-04 criteria for the diagnosis of hemophagocytic syndrome, cytopenias (hemoglobin ≤9 g/dl, platelets <100,000/μl or neutrophils <1,000/μl) were present in 51 patients (21%). Patients with hematological abnormalities showed higher SOFA scores, respiratory failure, septic shock and in-hospital mortality than the remaining patients. The composite endpoint was present in 33.3% in the cytopenias group vs. 13.3% in the group without cytopenias (p=0.001). In a multivariate analysis, variables associated with the composite endpoint were: use of steroids prior to present admission (OR: 0.12; 95% CI: 0.015–0.96, p=0.046), presence of any hematological abnormality (OR: 3.54; 95% CI:1.66–7.51, p= 0.001), and LDH>225 U/l (OR:4.45; CI:1–19.71, p=0.049). Hematological abnormalities are not uncommon among hospitalized patients with influenza virus infection, and they are associated with a poorer outcome.

Abstract
Healthy male Kunming mice received selenium yeast for 14 days prior to a single oral administration of zearalenone (ZEN). After 48 h, blood samples were collected for analysis and showed that mice in the ZEN-treated group has significantly decreased lymphocytes (P < 0.05) and platelets (P < 0.05) along with an increased white blood cell (WBC) count and other constituents (P < 0.05). The serum biochemistry analysis of the ZEN group indicated that glutamic pyruvic transaminase (ALT), glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (AST), urea, and uric acid were significantly increased (P < 0.05), whilst total bilirubin (TB) and albumin (ALB) were decreased along with serum testosterone and estrogen (P < 0. 05). The level of malondialdehyde (MDA) in the serum of the ZEN group was significantly increased whilst glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) had significantly decreased (P < 0.05). Treatment with selenium yeast had a significant effect on response with most of the experimental parameters returning to levels similar to those observed in the untreated control mice. From these data, it can be concluded that ZEN is highly poisonous in Kunming mice with high levels of toxicity on the blood, liver, and kidneys. High levels of oxidative stress were observed in mice and pre-treatment with selenium yeast by oral gavage is effective in the ameliorated effects of ZEN-induced damage.

Abstract
The effect of sudden changes of water temperature (WT) on the survival rate and physiological responses of the red spotted grouper (Epinephelus akaara) were examined by manipulating WT control system for 9 days. Experimental condition was divided in two different regimes at low (from 10°C to 4°C, decreased 1℃/d) and high (from 28°C to 34°C, increased 1°C/d) WT. Survival rate of experimental fishes were observed, and determined the changes of hematological characteristics by analyzing plasma levels of cortisol, glucose, total protein, and electrolytes (Na(+), Cl-, K(+)). No mortality was observed until low WT 6°C (144 h) and high WT 32°C (96 h), and 100% mortality was observed at low WT 4°C (216 h) and high WT 35°C (171 h). Plasma levels of cortisol and glucose increased rapidly as decreasing WT, and the loss of swimming ability and respiration response was observed at low WT 7°C and high WT 34°C conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present study summarizes the results of treatment in the form of disease-free survival and overall survival in bulky stage IB2 and locally advanced (stages II-IVA) squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix. The treatment has been given in the form of NACT followed by CCRT in one arm and CCRT in the other arm. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study analyzed 713 cervical cancer patients who were treated at our center during 2007 and 2008; out of 713 patients, data of 612 patients have been compared. The patients' data were analyzed retrospectively. Patients had undergone PF 28.6 %, TPF 21.5 %, and only CCRT 49.9 %. Majority of patients were in the age group 41-50 years, while stage wise, mainly stage IIIb and IIb. Disease-free survival was observed on the basis of stage and NACT. The survival analyses were performed using the Kaplan-Meier method. All statistical calculations were done with SPSS Statistics version 20.0. RESULTS For cancer cervix NACT versus CCRT, the DFS rate was at 5 years (58.3 vs. 41.8 % p = 0.001). NACT followed by CCRT demonstrated significantly superior DFS as compared to definitive CCRT, respectively, TPF (hazard ratio (HR) = 0.248, 95 % confidence interval (CI) 0.123-0.500; p < 0.001), PF (HR = 0.445, 95 % CI 0.266-0.722; p = 0.002). The results of univariate stage, age, and multivariate study show that stage hemoglobin level, interval between external-intracavitary radiation, and type of neoadjuvant chemotherapy were the factors affected survival cervical patients treated with radiation. The grade 3/4 hematologic toxicities were more in the NACT group than CCRT (p < 0.001) while the non-hematological toxicity was not significant; the TPF group experienced more toxicity than PF (p = 0.029). This treatment regimen is feasible as evidenced by the acceptable toxicity of NACT and by the high compliance to radiotherapy. The grade 3/4 hematologic toxicities were more in NACT groups than CCRT (p < 0.001); the TPF group experienced more toxicity than PF (p = 0.029). CONCLUSION TPF/PF as NACT is feasible and produces impressive responses in cancer cervix.
