Application of equilibrium passive sampling to assess the influence of anthropogenic activities and bioturbation on the distribution of hydrophobic organic chemicals in North Sea sediment cores

The pollution state in the German Bight was investigated by determination of pollutant concentrations of sediment samples using equilibrium passive sampling. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were determined in the pore water of North Sea sediment. The freely dissolved pore water concentration (C_free) was measured applying Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME) by using PDMS-coated glass fibers. The obtained results show that the North Sea contamination level with the investigated pollutants is relatively low. However, the stations close to the sediment-dumping site were higher contaminated. A macrofauna analysis showed that bioturbation activities were mostly present in the upper sediment layers, but a direct bioturbation influence on the sediment concentration distribution could not be shown. Overall, the contamination load was below baseline toxicity, but considering that several other priority pollutants will also make a contribution to the baseline toxicity, it can be counted as relatively high.

Application of equilibrium passive sampling to profile pore water and accessible concentrations of hydrophobic organic contaminants in Danube sediments

Total concentrations of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in sediment present a poor quality assessment parameter for aquatic organism exposure and environmental risk because they do not reflect contaminant bioavailability. The bioavailability issue of HOCs in sediments can be addressed by application of multi-ratio equilibrium passive sampling (EPS). In this study, riverbed sediment samples were collected during the Joint Danube Survey at 9 locations along the Danube River in 2013. Samples were ex-situ equilibrated with silicone passive samplers. Desorption isotherms were constructed, yielding two endpoints: pore water (C_W:0) and accessible (C_AS:0) concentration of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers in sediment. C_W:0 concentrations of DDT and its breakdown products exhibited elevated levels in the low Danube, with the maximum in the river delta. Other investigated HOCs did not show any clear spatial trends along the river, and only a moderate C_W:0 variability. C_AS:0 in sediment ranged from 10 to 90% of the total concentration in sediment. C_W:0 was compared with freely dissolved concentration in the overlaying surface water, measured likewise by passive sampling. The comparison indicated potential compound release from sediment to the water phase for PAHs with less than four aromatic rings, and for remaining HOCs either equilibrium between sediment and water, or potential compound deposition in sediment. Sorption partition coefficients of HOC to organic carbon correlated well with octanol-water partition coefficients (K_OW), showing stronger sorption of PAHs to sediment than that of PCBs and OCPs having equal logK_OW. Comparison of C_W:0 values with European environmental quality standards indicated potential exceedance for hexachlorobenzene, fluoranthene and benzo[a]pyrene at several sites. The study demonstrates the utility of passive sampling as an innovative approach for risk-oriented monitoring of HOCs in river catchments.

Studies on the sorption behavior and plant uptake of pesticides in Japanese soils

To estimate pesticide residue levels in succeeding crops based on those in soils, the relationship between pesticide concentrations in komatsuna (Brassica rapa var. perviridis) and the concentrations extracted sequentially from soils using water and acetone was investigated. The concentrations of many pesticides in komatsuna shoots showed higher positive correlation with water-extractable concentrations (C _W) than total-extractable concentrations in soils, so that the C _W was available for evaluating the phytoavailability of pesticides in the soil. As a result of examining the dissipation behavior of the C _W, the dissipation of the C _W was able to be predicted by considering time-dependent soil sorption, which could be estimated using the sorption coefficients (K _d) measured by a standard batch method. Furthermore, the present study showed that the properties of soil organic carbon such as black carbon content and the molecular structure of pesticides were important for estimating the K _d values more accurately.

Investigating levels of organic contaminants in Danube River sediments in Serbia by multi-ratio equilibrium passive sampling

The Danube River is a large transboundary river with many tributaries. Pollution from industries, municipal wastewater and navigation is discharged into the river directly or via its tributaries. These discharges can adversely contribute to the water and sediment quality, posing a risk to aquatic life. Contaminants with low water solubility tend to accumulate in suspended solids, which deposit in riverbed sediments. Subsequently, their levels in sediment represent a time integrated sample indicating the pollution in the watercourse. However, total concentrations in sediment do not directly represent the exposure risk to aquatic life as accumulation in sediment heavily depends on its properties, i.e. the amount of organic material and its composition, which is difficult to characterize as any natural material. To provide contaminant concentrations on a defined basis, surface layer riverbed sediment samples collected at eleven locations along the Danube stretch in the territory of Serbia in 2012, were ex-situ (in the laboratory) equilibrated with silicone passive samplers of constant accumulative properties, using the multi-ratio equilibrium passive sampling approach. Contaminant's equilibrium concentrations in passive samplers are mutually comparable in time and space and are better measure for bioavailability than total sediment concentrations. Uptake in the passive sampler converted to equivalent freely dissolved (pore-) water concentrations agreed well with those obtained from surface water passive sampling carried out within the Joint Danube Survey 3 in 2013. Furthermore, equilibrium passive sampler PCB concentrations, converted to lipid-based concentrations, agreed well with concentrations measured in fish sampled in the Danube several years earlier. Out of eleven priority substances, only fluoranthene exceeded the EU EQS in water, while the EQS for biota was exceeded or approached for fluoranthene and benz[a]pyrene, and hexachlorobenzene.

Polychlorinated biphenyls in stormwater sediments: Relationships with land use and particle characteristics

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are classified as persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Concentrations of 209 PCB congeners as well as profiles of the ten homologues were determined in stormwater sediments collected from various (primarily roadway) sites with different land use. The total PCB concentrations ranged from 8.3 to 57.4 ng/g dry weight (dw), with a mean value of 29.2 ng/g dw. PCB concentrations varied with nearby land use. Higher stormwater sediment PCB concentrations were found in dense urban areas (average: 39.8 ± 10.5 ng/g) and residential areas (average: 35.3 ± 6.2 ng/g) compared to highways passing through greenspace (average: 18.0 ± 0.4 ng/g). The number of chlorines per biphenyl ranged from 3.63 to 5.39 and the toxic equivalency (TEQs) of the PCBs were between 1.5 and 18.0 pg/g at all sites. A non-Aroclor congener, PCB 11, was detected in all samples and was dominant at two sites. PCBs were sorbed to smaller stormwater particulate matter (≤75 μm) at higher concentrations compared to larger particles (>75 μm). PCB sorption tended to increase with the total organic carbon (TOC) of the particulate matter in the sediment samples. However, greater PCB mass (almost 80%) was present in the larger particles. Information on sediment PCB concentrations from different land uses, along with stormwater particulate matter data can allow the estimation of PCB loads and load reductions using stormwater control measures.

Bioavailability and distribution of PAHs and PCBs in the sediment pore water of the German Bight and Wadden Sea

The freely dissolved concentration (C_free) was measured for PAHs and PCBs in sediments of the German Bight and Wadden Sea. Ex-situ Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME) was applied using Polydimethlysiloxane (PDMS) coated glass fibers followed by automated thermal desorption and GC-MS analysis. This study provides the first dataset on the spatial distribution of C_free for PAHs and PCBs in the German Bight and the Wadden Sea. We found elevated PCB concentrations in the Wadden Sea and especially in the Weser estuary. Sandy North Sea sediments were rather less contaminated, except for some former dumping sites. The sorption strength of PAHs was generally stronger, while PCBs in the Wadden Sea sediments were only weakly bound. This SPME method is a rapid and sensitive tool to study C_free of hydrophobic organic chemicals to improve todays sediment risk assessment.

Comparison of Sorption to Carbon-Based Materials and Nanomaterials Using Inverse Liquid Chromatography

Sorption studies of carbon-based materials and nanomaterials are typically conducted using batch experiments, but the analysis of weakly sorbing compounds may be challenging. Column chromatography represents a promising complement as higher sorbent to solution ratios can be applied. The sorbent is packed in a column, and sorption data are calculated by relating sorbate retention times to that of a nonretarded tracer. In this study, sorption of heterocyclic organic compounds (pyrazole, pyrrole, furan, and thiophene) by carbon-based materials (activated carbon, biochar, and graphite) and nanomaterials (functionalized carbon nanotubes and graphene platelets) was compared for the first time using column chromatography. D₂O was used as nonretarded tracer. Sorption isotherms were nonlinear and described well by the Freundlich model. Sorption differed between the materials regarding determined Freundlich coefficients ( K_f) by more than two orders of magnitude for isotherms in a similar concentration range. Normalization of K_f with the surface area of the sorbent significantly reduced but did not remove the differences between the sorbents. Overall, column chromatography represents the opportunity to study sorption of weakly sorbing compounds to diverse carbon-based sorbent materials with a single experimental approach, which is challenging in batch experiments because of the very different sorption properties of some sorbent materials.

Equilibrium sampling of HOCs in sediments and suspended particulate matter of the Elbe River

BACKGROUND

Chemical quality of sediment and suspended particulate matter (SPM) is usually assessed by total chemical concentrations (C_total). However, the freely dissolved concentration (C_free) is the ecologically more relevant parameter for bioavailability, diffusion and bioaccumulation. In recent studies, equilibrium sampling has been applied to determine C_free of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in the sediment pore water, whereas such data are missing for SPM. We applied solid-phase micro-extraction to measure and compare C_free of PAHs and PCBs in pore water of sediments and SPM sampled along the German part of the river Elbe. Moreover, site-specific distribution ratios were evaluated and C_bio,lipid was predicted using C_free.

RESULTS

C_free of PAHs remained largely constant while C_free of PCBs varied along the Elbe River. The highest C_total of PCBs and PAHs were found at Prossen (km 13) and Meißen (km 96). PCB C_total even exceeded the environmental quality standard for sediment and SPM in Prossen. Site-specific distribution ratios (K_D) revealed a stronger sorption for PAHs compared to PCBs, indicating a higher availability of PCBs. Equilibrium partitioning concentrations in lipids (C_lip↔sed) showed a high correlation with actually measured lipid-normalised concentrations (C_bio,lipid) in bream. This indicates that PCB bioaccumulation in this benthic fish species is closely linked to the sediment contamination.

CONCLUSIONS

In rivers, SPM functions as a transportation vehicle for HOCs along the stream until it eventually deposits to the sediment. This study demonstrates that due to weaker sorption of PAHs and PCBs to the SPM this matrix poses a higher risk to the aquatic environment compared to the sediment. The prediction of C_bio,lipid of PCBs was correct and shows that solid-phase micro-extraction is highly suited to predict lipid concentration, and thus a valuable tool for risk-assessment or sediment management.

The Role of Spring Flood and Landscape Type in the Terrestrial Export of Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds to Streamwater

Concentrations of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs), including 19 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and 15 PAH-derivatives (oxygenated and nitrogen heterocyclic PAHs), were measured in streams in a remote headwater catchment in northern Europe and in more urbanized, downstream areas. Sampling was conducted during 2014 to 2016 and included the main hydrological seasons (snow-free, snow-covered, and spring flood) at six sampling sites. Levels of the targeted PACs varied substantially over time and space and were up to 110-fold (on average 17-fold) and 7000-fold (on average 670-fold) higher for PAHs and PAH-derivatives, respectively, during spring flood compared with preceding snow-covered and snow-free seasons. Higher levels of ∑PACs were generally found in a headwater stream draining a mire than at an adjacent forested site, with up to 20 times and 150 times higher levels for ∑PAH and ∑PAH-derivatives, respectively. The particle-bound PAC levels were positively correlated to surface runoff in the mire stream (∑PAHs: p = 0.032; ∑PAH-derivatives: p = 0.040) but not in the corresponding forest stream, during snowmelt and winter base flow. In more urbanized downstream areas, particle-bound PACs were instead strongly associated with suspended particulate matter ( p < 0.05; ∑PAHs and ∑PAH-derivatives except one site). Levels of ∑PACs in the streamwater were on average 3-fold higher downstream of the most densely populated area than at the outlet of the headwater catchment. The higher PAC levels in the downstream water compared to the remote headwater were clearer when normalized to SPM amounts (instead of water volume), with a gradual downstream trend between the sites.

Sedimentary black carbon and organochlorines in Lesser Himalayan Region of Pakistan: Relationship along the altitude

Black carbon (BC) and total organic carbon (TOC) along with their relationship with organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were assessed in Lesser Himalayan Region (LHR) in different altitudinal zones based on anthropogenic influence/source proximity under the scope of this study. Results revealed the concentrations of BC, TOC, OCPs and PCBs varied between 0.3 and 43.5mgg^-1, 1.7-65.4mgg^-1, 0.59-3.64ngg^-1 and 0.01-1.31ngg^-1, respectively. Spatial distribution trends have shown higher levels of OCPs and PCBs contamination near populated and urban areas along the altitude. It is implicated that upslope, short and long-range transport and local emission sources contribute to the contamination of different altitudinal zones of LHR. The relationship of BC and TOC with OCPs and PCBs was evaluated using principal component analysis (PCA) and Pearson correlation analysis that indicated higher sorptive influence of BC over TOC in distribution status of organochlorines in LHR. Further research is required to find relationship of BC and TOC in surface riverine sediments, particularly in aquatic systems along the altitude in mountain regions of the world.

Sorption of Heterocyclic Organic Compounds to Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes

Sorption is an important natural and technical process. Sorption coefficients are typically determined in batch experiments, but this may be challenging for weakly sorbing compounds. An alternative method enabling analysis of those compounds is column chromatography. A column packed with the sorbent is used and sorption data are determined by relating sorbate retention to that of a nonretarded tracer. In this study, column chromatography was applied for the first time to study sorption of previously hardly investigated heterocyclic organic compounds to multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Sorption data for these compounds are very limited in literature, and weak sorption is expected from predictions. Deuterium oxide was used as nonretarded tracer. Sorption isotherms were well described by the Freundlich model and data showed reasonable agreement with predicted values. Sorption was exothermic and physisorption was observed. H-bonding may contribute to overall sorption, which is supported by reduced sorption with increasing ionic strength due to blocking of functional groups. Lowering pH reduced sorption of ionizable compounds, due to electrostatic repulsion at pH 3 where sorbent as well as sorbates were positively charged. Overall, column chromatography was successfully used to study sorption of heterocyclic compounds to MWCNTs and could be applied for other carbon-based sorbents.

Environmental Conditions Influencing Sorption of Inorganic Anions to Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes Studied by Column Chromatography

Sorption to carbon-based nanomaterials is typically studied in batch experiments. An alternative method offering advantages to study sorption is column chromatography. Sorbent packed columns are used and sorption data are determined by relating sorbate retention to that of a nonretarded tracer. We have now for the first time applied this technique to study the influence of environmental conditions on sorption of inorganic anions (bromide, nitrite, nitrate, and iodide) to multiwalled carbon nanotubes. Deuterium oxide was used as nonretarded tracer. Sorption isotherms were best described by the Freundlich model. Sorption increased in the order bromide < nitrite < nitrate < iodide. Increasing ionic strength from 1 mM to 100 mM sodium chloride significantly reduced or completely suppressed sorption (bromide, nitrite) due to competition with chloride. pH strongly affected sorption as negatively charged analytes were attracted by the positively charged surface at pH 3. At pH > 4.5 the surface charge was negative, but sorption was still detectable at pH 6 and 9. Consequently, other forces than electrostatic attraction contributed to sorption. These forces may include H-bonding as indicated by sorption enthalpy determined by variation of column temperature. Overall, column chromatography represents a promising alternative in sorption studies to reveal sorbent properties.

Persistent Organic Pollutants in Streamwater: Influence of Hydrological Conditions and Landscape Type

Concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) in streamwater were measured in a remote catchment in northern Sweden and downstream to the Baltic Sea. Sampling took place at seven sites during two years and under different hydrological conditions: during the snow-free, snow-covered, and spring-flood seasons. Concentrations varied substantially between seasons and were up to 20 times higher during the spring flood compared to the preceding snow-covered period. The increase in concentrations with runoff was due to higher levels of particle-associated contaminants, while the dissolved concentrations remained stable. Particulate-contaminant concentrations were positively correlated primarily to suspended particulate matter (SPM) at sites in areas with a high land-cover fraction of sorted sediment. When upstream sampling locations were compared, a mire-dominated stream had higher concentrations and a lower retention of atmospherically deposited contaminants than a forest stream of the same catchment size. Contaminant concentrations (normalized to volume) did not increase consistently downstream despite the presence of several point sources. However, when normalized to the amount of SPM, concentrations were on average >20 times higher at the outlet in the Baltic Sea compared to the outlet from the remote catchment without point sources.

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the Indus River catchment area, Pakistan: Status, soil-air exchange and black carbon mediated distribution

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were investigated in passive air and soil samples from the catchment area of the Indus River, Pakistan. ∑15OCPs ranged between 0.68 and 13.47 ng g(-1) in soil and 375.1-1975 pg m-(3) in air. HCHs and DDTs were more prevalent in soil and air compartments. Composition profile indicated that β-HCH and p,p'-DDE were the dominant of all metabolites among HCHs and DDTs respectively. Moreover, fBC and fTOC were assessed and evaluated their potential role in the distribution status of OCPs. The fTOC and fBC ranged between 0.77 and 2.43 and 0.04-0.30% respectively in soil. Regression analysis showed the strong influence of fBC than fTOC on the distribution of OCPs in the Indus River catchment area soil. Equilibrium status was observed for β-HCH, δ-HCH, p,p'-DDD, o,p'-DDT, TC, HCB and Heptachlor with ff ranged between 0.3 and 0.59 while assessing the soil-air exchange of OCPs.

The relationship between the black carbon and bisphenol A in sea and river sediments (Southern Baltic)

This study was derived from field investigations to assess bisphenol A (BPA) concentrations in the sea and river sediments of the Gulf of Gdansk. Black carbon (BC) and total organic carbon (TOC) were identified as influencing factors on the accumulation. As a result of the transportation of BC with organic matter via rivers into the Gulf of Gdansk, the highest mean concentrations (11.26ngBPA/(gdryweight (dw))), were determined in the sediments of river estuaries. Sediments in coastal stations were characterized by the lowest mean concentrations (5.73ngBPA/(gdw)). TOC content below 0.1% determined the sorption of BPA on BC particles in sediments, and statistically significant correlation between the concentration of BPA and the BC/TOC ratio was found in these cases. In addition, dependency between the concentration of BPA and the content of BC was discovered in sediments where the BC/TOC ratio was >0.33.

Bioaccumulation of dioxin-like PCBs and PBDEs by detritus-feeding fish in the Rio de la Plata estuary, Argentina

A comparative analysis of bioaccumulation behavior of dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dlPCBs) and polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs) was conducted involving simultaneous measurements in settling particles and a detritivorous fish (Sabalo, Prochilodus linneatus) collected in the sewage impacted Buenos Aires coastal area. Focalization of dlPCBs and PBDEs along the detritus food chain is reflected by a 30-40-fold increase of dry weight PBDE and dlPCB concentrations from settling particles to fish (1.8 ± 1.0 to 58 ± 31 and 6.8 ± 3.9 to 281 ± 155 ng g(-1) dry weight (dw), respectively). In this transference, dlPCB congeners presented more conservative patterns than those of PBDEs, basically due to debromination of BDE 99 and 153 to BDE 47 in fish. Lipid/organic carbon-based biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) ranged between 5 and 20 (7.3 ± 3.0 and 16 ± 8.0 for PBDEs and dlPCBs). Congener-specific BSAF of dlPCBs suggested a lower bioavailability of more planar non-ortho-PCB versus mono-ortho-PCB suggesting higher affinity to organic matter. BSAFs of PBDEs differed markedly among bromine homolog groups, supporting the biotransformation-formation from higher brominated to lighter congeners. The log BSAFs-log K OW relationship of dlPCBs and PBDEs presented a parabolic pattern maximizing at log K OW 6-7, but PBDE curve differs reflecting biotransformation processes.

Positioning activated carbon amendment technologies in a novel framework for sediment management

Contaminated sediments can pose serious threats to human health and the environment by acting as a source of toxic chemicals. The amendment of contaminated sediments with strong sorbents like activated C (AC) is a rapidly developing strategy to manage contaminated sediments. To date, a great deal of attention has been paid to the technical and ecological features and implications of sediment remediation with AC, although science in this field still is rapidly evolving. This article aims to provide an update on the recent literature on these features, and provides a comparison of sediment remediation with AC to other sediment management options, emphasizing their full-scale application. First, a qualitative overview of advantages of current alternatives to remediate contaminated sediments is presented. Subsequently, AC treatment technology is critically reviewed, including current understanding of the effectiveness and ecological safety for the use of AC in natural systems. Finally, this information is used to provide a novel framework for supporting decisions concerning sediment remediation and beneficial reuse.

Monitoring of river water for free cyanide pollution from mining activity in Papua New Guinea and attenuation of cyanide by biochar

Cyanide (CN) pollution was reported in the downstream areas of Watut and Markham Rivers due to effluent discharges from gold mining and processing activities of Hidden Valley mines in Morobe province of Papua New Guinea. We monitored free cyanide levels in Watut and Markham River waters randomly three times in years for 2 years (2012 and 2013). Besides, a short-term static laboratory study was conducted to evaluate the potential of river sediment to attenuate externally added cyanide, with and without the presence of biochar material. Results indicated that the free cyanide content ranged between 0.17 and 1.32 μg L(-1) in the river waters. The free cyanide content were found to be significantly (p < 0.05) greater in June (0.87 μg L(-1)) and May (0.77 μg L(-1)) months of 2012 and 2013, respectively, than the rest of the months. However, free cyanide levels in all four monitoring sites across three sampling intervals were lower than 0.20 mg L(-1) which is the maximum contaminant level (MCL) permitted according to US Environmental Protection Agency. Under laboratory conditions, the biochar-impregnated sediment showed ∼3 times more attenuation capacity for cyanide than non-amended sediment, thus indicating possibility of using biochar to cleanse cyanide from spills or other sources of pollution.

Sorption of the monoterpenes α-pinene and limonene to carbonaceous geosorbents including biochar

The sorption of two monoterpenes, α pinene and limonene to the carbonaceous geosorbents graphite, bituminous coal, lignite coke, biochar and Pahokee peat was quantified. Polyethylene (PE) passive samplers were calibrated for the first time for these compounds by determining the PE-water partitioning coefficients and used as a tool to determine sorption to the carbonaceous geosorbents. Log KPE-water values were 3.49±0.58 for α pinene and 4.08±0.27 for limonene. The sorption of limonene to all materials was stronger than that for α pinene (differences of 0.2-1.3 log units between distribution coefficients for the monoterpenes). Placing Kd values in increasing order for α pinene gave biochar≈Pahokee peat≈bituminous coal≈lignite coke<graphite. For limonene the order was: Pahokee peat≈biochar≈bituminous coal<graphite≈lignite coke. Micropore (defined as pores <1.5 nm) and nanopore surface area (defined as pores 1.5 nm to 50 nm) normalised carbonaceous geosorbent-water distribution coefficients were also calculated. There was no clear correlation of these distribution coefficients with SA. Elemental composition was used to assess the degree of condensation (or alteration) of the carbonaceous geosorbents. The degree of carbonisation increased in the order; Pahokee peat<lignite coke<bituminous coal<biochar<graphite, however this was not correlated with an increase in the experimental distribution coefficients.

Assessing the relationship and influence of black carbon on distribution status of organochlorines in the coastal sediments from Pakistan

Levels of total organic carbon (TOC) and black carbon (BC) were determined together with those of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the selected eighteen coastal sites (n = 285) along the Arabian Sea from Pakistan. Results showed that the total concentration of TOC, BC, ∑OCPs and ∑26PCBs ranged between 0.3 and 2.9% dw, 0.1-0.2% dw, 0.9-110 ng g(-1) dw and 6.2-1200 ng g(-1) dw, respectively. Correlation analysis of BC (r = 0.26-0.89) and TOC (r = 0.06-0.69) revealed a stronger association with studied compounds. The sedimentary depositional fluxes (D) for ∑OCPs and ∑26PCBs were calculated as 1.7 and 4.9 tons yr(-1), respectively. In the coastal belt of Pakistan, sedimentary mass inventories (I) indicated the presence of 13 and 37 metric tons of ∑OCPs and ∑26PCBs, respectively.

Sediment pore water distribution coefficients of PCB congeners in enriched black carbon sediment

More than 2300 sediment pore water distribution coefficients (KPCBi ds) of 93 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were measured and modeled from sediments from Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal. KPCBi ds were calculated from previously reported bulk sediment values and newly analyzed pore water. PCBs in pore waters were measured using SPME PDMS-fiber and ∑PCB ranged from 41 to 1500 ng L(-1). The resulting KPCBi ds were ~1 log unit lower in comparison to other reported values. A simple model for the KPCBi d consisted of the product of the organic carbon fraction and the octanol-water partition coefficient and provided an excellent prediction for the measured values, with a mean square error of 0.09 ± 0.06. Although black carbon content is very high in these sediments and was expected to play an important role in the distribution of PCBs, no improvement was obtained when a two-carbon model was used.

Impact of black carbon on the bioaccessibility of organic contaminants in soil

The ability of carbonaceous geosorbents (CGs) such as black carbon (BC) to extensively sorb many common environmental contaminants suggests that they potentially possesses qualities useful to the sequestration of harmful xenobiotics within contaminated land. Presently, however, there is limited understanding of the implications for the bioaccessibility, mobility and environmental risk of organic contaminants while sorbed to BC in soil and sediment, in addition to the inherent toxicity of BC itself to terrestrial flora and fauna. We review both the processes involved in and factors influencing BC sorption characteristics, and ultimately consider the impacts BC will have for bioavailability/bioaccessibility, toxicity and risk assessment/remediation of contaminated land. We conclude that while the application of BC is promising, additional work on both their toxicity effects and long-term stability is required before their full potential as a remediation agent can be safely exploited.

Polyethylene-water partitioning coefficients for parent- and alkylated-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls

We report polyethylene (PE)-water partitioning coefficients (K(PE)) for 17 parent-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 22 alkylated-PAHs, 3 perdeuterated parent-PAHs, and 100 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners or coeluting congener groups. The K(PE) values for compounds in the same homologue group are within 0.2 log units for alkylated-PAHs but span up to an order of magnitude for PCBs, due to the greater contribution of the position of the substituents (i.e., chlorines for PCBs and alkyl groups for alkylated-PAHs) to the molecular structure. The K(PE) values in deionized water for parent- and alkylated-PAHs show a good correlation with a regression model employing the number of aromatic carbons (C(AR)) and aliphatic carbons (C(AL)) in each compound: log K(PE) = -0.241 + 0.313 C(AR) + 0.461 C(AL). The regression model is useful for the assessment of freely dissolved aqueous concentrations of alkylated-PAHs, which comprise a significant fraction of the total in petroleum-derived PAHs and in some pyrogenic PAH mixtures. For PCBs, experimentally determined octanol-water partitioning coefficients are the best predictor of the K(PE) values among the molecular parameters studied. The effect of salinity up to 20 or 30 parts per thousand is found to be relatively insignificant on K(PE) values for PAHs or PCBs, respectively.

Modeling water column partitioning of polychlorinated biphenyls to natural organic matter and black carbon

High volume in situ surface water samples were collected from a tidal tributary of the Delaware Estuary using an Infiltrex sampling system equipped with a 1 μm particle filter and a XAD-2 resin column. Particulate and dissolved phase polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners were analyzed using high resolution gas chromatography/high resolution mass spectrometry to obtain detection levels in the femtograms per liter range. The data were fit to a four-phase equilibrium partitioning model including freely dissolved PCB, PCB bound to particulate organic carbon (POC), PCB bound to dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and PCB bound to black carbon (BC). Isotherms were assumed to be linear for POC and DOC and nonlinear for BC. The partition coefficient between BC and dissolved PCB was assumed to depend on the dihedral angle between the phenyl rings. Following parameter optimization, the correlation coefficient between the log of the modeled and measured apparent distribution coefficient Kp,app was 0.94, and the RMSE was 0.189 log units. Including BC in the model reduces the dissolved PCB phase concentration in the water column for all congeners, especially for the non-ortho and mono-ortho substituted congeners.

Ion-exchange affinity of organic cations to natural organic matter: influence of amine type and nonionic interactions at two different pHs

Sorption to standard soil organic matter (SOM) has been studied for a wide variety of organic cations using a flow through method with fully aqueous medium as eluent. SOM sorption for weak bases (pK(a) 4.5-7) was stronger at pH 4.5 than at pH 7, indicating that the ion-exchange affinity of the cationic species to SOM was higher than the bulk partition coefficient of corresponding neutral species to SOM. In the range of pH 4.5-7, the effect of pH on the sorption coefficients for strong bases with pK(a) > 7 was small, within 0.3 log units. For cations with the molecular formula C(x)H(y)N, sorption was accurately predicted by a model accounting for size (increase with alkyl chain length) and type of charged group (1° amine >4° ammonium of equal size). In addition to the C(x)H(y)N-model, several empirical correction factors were derived from the data for organic cations with polar functional groups. Models based on K(OW) or pK(a) fail to explain differences in sorption affinity of the ionic species. Our data on ion-exchange affinities for 80 organic cations show many examples where specific chemical moieties, for example, CH(2)-units, aromatic rings or hydroxyl groups, contribute differently to the sorption coefficient as compared to bulk partitioning data of neutral compounds. Other sorption models that were evaluated to explain variation between compounds suffered from outliers of more than one log unit and did not reduce relative log mean standard errors below 0.5. A wider range of sorption coefficients and more sorption data in general are required to improve modeling efforts further.

A quantitative structure-property relationship analysis of soot-water partition coefficients for persistent organic pollutants

Geometrical optimization and electrostatic potential calculations have been performed at the HF/6-31G level of theory for investigated persistent organic pollutants (POPs). A number of statistically based parameters have been obtained. Relationship between soot-water partition coefficients (logK(SC)) of POPs and the structural descriptors has been established by the multiple linear regression method. The result shows that the quantities derived from electrostatic potential V(s)(-)¯ and V(s,max), together with molecular surface area (A(S)) and the energy of the highest occupied molecular orbital (E(HOMO)) can be well used to express the quantitative relationship between structure and logK(SC) (QSPR) of POPs. Predictive capability of the model has been demonstrated by leave-one-out cross-validation with the cross-validated correlation coefficient of 0.9797. Furthermore, the predictive power of this model was further examined for the external test set with the correlation coefficient of 0.9811 between observed and predicted logK(SC), validating the robustness and good predictive ability of our model. Furthermore, in order to further investigate the applicability of these parameters derived from electrostatic potential in prediction of soot-water partition coefficient for organic pollutants, eleven polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), eleven polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and nine phenyl urea herbicides (PUHs) from other source have also been studied. The QSPR models established may provide a new powerful method for predicting soot-water partition coefficients (logK(SC)) of organic pollutants.

In situ remediation of contaminated sediments using carbonaceous materials

Carbonaceous materials (CM), such as activated carbons or biochars, have been shown to significantly reduce porewater concentrations and risks by binding hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) present in aquatic sediments. In the present study, the authors review the current state-of-the-art use of CM as an extensive method for sediment remediation, covering both technical and ecological angles. The review addresses how factors such as CM type, particle size and dosage, sediment characteristics, and properties of contaminants affect the effectiveness of CM amendment to immobilize HOCs in aquatic sediments. The authors also review the extent to which CM may reduce bioaccumulation and toxicity of HOCs and whether CM itself has negative effects on benthic species and communities. The review is based on literature and datasets from laboratory as well as field trials with CM amendments. The presence of phases such as natural black carbon, oil, or organic matter in the sediment reduces the effectiveness of CM amendments. Carbonaceous material additions appear to improve the habitat quality for benthic organisms by reducing bioavailable HOC concentrations and toxicity in sediment. The negative effects of CM itself on benthic species, if any, have been shown to be mild. The beneficial effects of reducing toxicity at low CM concentrations most probably outweigh the mild negative effects observed at higher CM concentrations.

The relationship between the concentrations and distribution of organic pollutants and black carbon content in benthic sediments in the Gulf of Gdańsk, Baltic Sea

The influence of the sediment's physico-chemical properties and black carbon content, on the distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls in benthic sediments of the Gulf of Gdansk (Baltic Sea) was determined. Sediments from port, marine dump site of dredged spoils, the Vistula river mouth, Gdansk Deep were selected. The concentrations of ∑PAHs (fluoranthene, pyrene, benzo(a)anthracene, benzo(k)fluoranthene, benzo(a)pyrene, dibenzo(ah)anthracene, benzo(ghi)perylene) were 294-2200 ng/g d.w. and for ∑PCBs (28, 52, 101, 118, 138, 153, 180) were 2.4-11.3 ng/g d.w. The sediments content of loss on ignition was 1.13-16.15%, total organic carbon was 0.89-7.15%, black carbon was 0.20-1.15%. The highest correlation coefficient values (r=0.76-0.92, p<0.05) for a relationship between the concentrations of organic pollutants, and organic matter, organic and black carbon contents were obtained in harbor sediments with low content of organic matter (<5%) and high share of black carbon in total carbon (up to 40%).

Impact of black carbon originated from fly ash and soot on the toxicity of pentachlorophenol in sediment

The widely existing fly ash and soot produced during the process of combustion, which are often known as waste but also an important source of black carbon (BC) in the environment, were treated by HCl and HF solution for this study, and recorded as FC and SC, respectively. A series of experiments were carried out to investigate the toxicity of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in sediment, influence of various BCs in sediment with different contents (0%, 0.5%, 1%, 2%, 5% and 10%) on the extractability and toxicity of PCP (50mg/kg), and toxicity of various BC in sediment. The results demonstrated that the PCP exposure to wheat seed exhibited a dose-dependent behavior, and the extractability and toxicity of PCP decreased with the increasing content of BC in sediment. The PCP extractable rate was significantly (P<0.01) influenced by the higher content of BCs. Noticeably, each BC had no toxic but stimulative effect on root elongation and early seedling growth. Furthermore, it was found that the inhibitive effect on the extractability and toxicity of PCP and the stimulative effect on root elongation and early seedling growth caused by SC were more evident than FC.

The pH-dependent adsorption of tributyltin to charcoals and soot

Widespread use of tributyltin (TBT) poses a serious environmental problem. Adsorption by black carbon (BC) may strongly affect its behavior. The adsorption of TBT to well characterized soot and two charcoals with specific surface area in the range of 62-111m(2)g(-1) have been investigated with main focus on pH effects. The charcoals but not soot possess acidic functional groups. TBT adsorption reaches maximum at pH 6-7 for charcoals, and at pH>6 for soot. Soot has between 1.5 and 15 times higher adsorption density (0.09-1.77μmolm(-2)) than charcoals, but charcoals show up to 17 times higher sorption affinities than soot. TBT adsorption is successfully described by a new pH-dependent dual Langmuir model considering electrostatic and hydrophobic adsorption, and pH effects on TBT speciation and BC surface charge. It is inferred that strong sorption of the TBTOH species to BC may affect TBT toxicity.

Influence of black carbon and chemical planarity on bioavailability of sediment-associated contaminants

Black carbon (BC) and chemical properties may play a significant role in defining the bioavailability of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) in sediment. In the current study, bioavailability of four HOCs with differing planarity was determined in sediments amended with two types of BC (soot and charcoal) at different concentrations by matrix solid-phase microextraction (matrix-SPME) and bioaccumulation testing using the freshwater oligochaete Lumbriculus variegatus. Furthermore, the applicability of the matrix-SPME method to bioavailability estimation in BC-amended sediment was tested. The charcoal treatment significantly reduced the bioaccumulation of the planar compounds (3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl and benzo[a]pyrene) in L. variegatus, and the matrix-SPME method showed a similar trend as contaminant bioaccumulation in L. variegatus. Conversely, manipulation of sediment with soot had no effect or slightly increased bioavailability of the planar compounds in both bioaccumulation and matrix-SPME tests. Little if any affect was noted in bioavailability of the nonplanar compounds (2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl and permethrin) with the soot and charcoal amendments. Results showed that the role of BC in defining bioavailability of HOCs depends not only on the type and concentrations of BC present, but also the planarity of the HOCs.

Predicting the bioavailability of sediment-associated spiked compounds by using the polyoxymethylene passive sampling and tenax extraction methods in sediments from three river basins in Europe

This study presents the bioavailability of four spiked compounds to Lumbriculus variegatus, in sediment samples from three river basins in Europe: the Elbe, the Llobregat, and the Scheldt. Twenty sediment samples differing in physical and chemical properties were spiked with chlorpyrifos, pyrene, tetrachloribiphenyl, and tetrabromo diphenyl ether. The main focus of this study was to compare the suitability of two chemical approaches-the rapidly desorbing fraction method based on the Tenax extraction and the freely dissolved chemical concentration method based on polyoxymethylene passive sampling-for predicting the bioavailability of sediment-associated hydrophobic compounds. It appears that accessible concentration estimated by Tenax extraction does not result in equal freely dissolved concentrations based on polyoxymethylene passive sampling results. The present data show that freely dissolved concentration in pore water mainly determines the uptake by organisms and, therefore, the polyoxymethylene passive sampling method was a successful approach to estimating the bioavailability of sediment-associated lipophilic contaminants (log octanol-water partitioning coefficient >6). The sediment characteristics or river basin differences had only a minor effect on the bioavailability estimates. Overall, passive samplers have not been tested to a sufficient extent in various chemicals or exposure matrixes. For this reason, bioassays are still needed in the risk assessment process in order to verify results based on passive sampling methods.

Relationships between persistent organic pollutants and carbonaceous materials in aquatic sediments of Taiwan

Recent studies have shown that many persistent organic pollutants (POPs, e.g., polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and various pesticides), are strongly associated with carbonaceous materials (including organic carbon (OC) and black carbon (BC)). We hypothesize that carbonaceous materials can be used as a first-order pollution index, to indicate areas where POP pollution may require further investigation. We tested our hypothesis and found that strong, positive correlations between BC and OC contents versus the concentrations of PCBs (and PAHs) existed in estuarine sediments of the Danshui River in 2005 and 2008. Thus, our preliminary results demonstrate that POC and BC are potential indicators of the POP pollution potential in fluvial sediments of the Danshui River in Taiwan. This innovative approach can provide a simple, relatively inexpensive and expedient means to monitor concentrations of POPs in polluted aquatic sediments of Taiwan, and/or those having a legacy of POP inputs.

QSPR studies on soot-water partition coefficients of persistent organic pollutants by using artificial neural network

Two quantitative structure property relationship (QSPR) models for predicting soot-water partition coefficients (K(sc)) of 25 persistent organic pollutants (POPs) were developed. One model was established with linear artificial neural network (L-ANN), the other model was developed by using back propagation artificial neural network (BP-ANN). Leave one out cross validation was adopted to assess the predictive ability of the developed models. For the L-ANN model, the square of correlation coefficient (R(2)) between the predicted and experimental log K(SC) is 0.8358 and the RMS%RE is 6.32 for all the compounds. For the BP-ANN model, R(2) is 0.9628 and the RMS%RE is 4.12 for all the compounds. The result of leave one out cross validation demonstrates that both L-ANN and BP-ANN are practicable for developing the QSPR model for K(SC) of the investigated POPs. However, the model established with BP-ANN is better than the model established with L-ANN in prediction accuracy. It is shown that BP-ANN is a promising method for developing QSPR models for K(SC) of POPs.

Dynamics of PCB removal and detoxification in historically contaminated soils amended with activated carbon

Activated carbon (AC) can help overcome toxicity of pollutants to microbes and facilitate soil bioremediation. We used this approach to treat a Histosol and an Alluvial soil historically contaminated with PCB (4190 and 1585 mg kg(-1), respectively; primarily tri-, tetra- and pentachlorinated congeners). Results confirmed PCB persistence; reductions in PCB extractable from control and AC-amended soils were mostly due to a decrease in tri- and to some extent tetrachlorinated congeners as well as formation of a bound fraction. Mechanisms of PCB binding by soil and AC were different. In addition to microbial degradation of less chlorinated congeners, we postulate AC catalyzed dechlorination of higher chlorinated congeners. A large decrease in bioavailable PCB in AC-amended soils was demonstrated by greater clover germination and biomass. Phytotoxicity was low in treated soils but remained high in untreated soils for the duration of a 39-month experiment. These observations indicate the utility of AC for remediation of soils historically contaminated with PCB.

Sorption of phenyl urea herbicides to black carbon

In this work, we developed a dialysis technique to determine black carbon (BC; diesel soot)-water distribution coefficients (K(BC)) of nine phenyl urea herbicides (PUHs). The K(BC) at 1 microg/L ranged over 2 orders of magnitude, with diuron displaying the highest log K(BC) of 4.5. The K(BC) were 20-170 times higher than corresponding estimated partitioning coefficients to organic carbon (K(OC)). This is consistent with earlier findings for more hydrophobic compounds. There was a linear increase in log K(BC) with decreasing thermodynamic difference between the geometrically optimized and planar molecule conformation (DeltaE(planar)). Hence, previous observations of enhanced BC adsorption of planar compounds (e.g., non-ortho-polychlorinated biphenyls) were confirmed also for the polar PUHs. Further, the data suggested indirectly that for molecules with several different functional groups (such as the PUHs), specific electron donor and acceptor interactions may be of more relevance for the adsorption to BC than the ability of the molecule to undergo dispersive van der Waals interactions. Sorption coefficients estimated from poly parameter linear solvation energy relationships (pp-LSER) based on data for activated carbon were 1-1.5 log units higher than the experimental data for diesel soot. This illustrates the complexity in applying models developed for one BC form to another, and calls for more data on soot-water distribution descriptors.

Catalytic role of palladium and relative reactivity of substituted chlorines during adsorption and treatment of PCBs on reactive activated carbon

The adsorption-mediated dechlorination of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) is a unique feature of reactive activated carbon (RAC). Here, we address the RAC system, containing a tunable amount of Fe as a primary electron donor coupled with Pd as an electrochemical catalyst to potentially respond to the characteristic of contaminated sites, effectively traps and treats various PCB congeners. A dramatic increase in RAC reactivity with Pd doping at as low as 0.01% suggests its critical role for accelerating hydrodechlorination of PCBs. Characteristic adsorption and dechlorination behavior and ensuing decomposition pathways of 13 selected PCB congeners are discussed with their surface interactions with RAC. Important findings include (i) inherent dechlorination susceptibility of chlorines in para > meta > ortho position, regardless of independent or competitive conditions as well as substrate effects, (ii) favorable reduction of more toxic coplanar PCB congeners, (iii) preferential electrophilic attack to chlorines in a less substituted phenyl ring and an isolated chlorine, regardless of the steric or inductive effect as a dominant limiting factor for the dechlorination of ortho or meta PCBs, respectively, (iv) prominent dechlorination inhibition for higher ortho congeners but negligible inhibition for higher meta congeners, and (v) eventual complete dechlorination of higher PCB congeners to biphenyl.

Desorption and bioavailability of spiked pentabromo diphenyl ether and tetrachlorodibenzo(p)dioxin in contaminated sediments

The relationship between desorption kinetics and bioavailability of sediment-associated 2,2',4,4,5' pentabromo diphenyl ether [(14)C] (BDE-99) and 2,3,7,8 tetrachlorodibenzo(p)dioxin [(3)H] (TCDD) was examined in the contaminated sediments. The desorption kinetics were measured in a sediment-water suspension using Tenax extraction, and bioaccumulation was examined by exposing Lumbriculus variegatus (Oligochaeta) to BDE-99 and TCDD spiked sediment in a 14-day kinetic study. Both chemicals had a high affinity to the finest particle size fraction (<20 microm) and the large, very slowly desorbing fraction (58-75%). The biota-sediment accumulation factors ranged between 1.9 and 4.4 for BDE-99 and between 1.4 and 2.8 for TCDD. The chemical outflux from the rapidly desorbing fraction and influx into organisms shows the connection between desorption and bioavailability. Despite this, normalization to the rapidly desorbing fraction was unable to reduce differences in bioavailability estimates between the chemicals. Thus, it is evident that chemical extraction in the mixed system (Tenax tubes) does not fully describe the bioavailable fraction that worms face in stagnant sediments in a similar way for all chemicals. However, when all desorbing domains were included in the calculation, the difference between the chemicals disappears. Desorbing fractions were also able to reduce variability in the biota-sediment accumulation factors between the tested sediments when organic carbon-based sediment chemical concentrations were modified by the desorbing fractions.

Comparison of manufactured and black carbon nanoparticle concentrations in aquatic sediments

In this paper, we show that concentrations of manufactured carbon-based nanoparticles (MCNPs) in aquatic sediments will be negligible compared to levels of black carbon nanoparticles (BCNPs). This is concluded from model calculations accounting for MCNP sedimentation fluxes, removal rates due to aggregation or degradation, and MCNP burial in deeper sediment layers. The resultant steady state MCNP levels are compared with BCNP levels calculated from soot levels in sediments and weight fractions of nanosized fractions of these soot particles. MCNP/BCNP ratios range from 10(-7) to 10(-4) (w:w). This suggests that the often acclaimed effect of MCNPs on organic pollutant binding and bioavailability will likely be below the level of detection if natural BCNPs are present, even if binding to MCNP is one to two orders of magnitude stronger than to BCNPs. Furthermore, exposure and toxic effects of MCNPs in sediments and soils will be negligible compared to that of BCNPs.

Attenuation of polychlorinated biphenyl sorption to charcoal by humic acids

Strong sorption to black carbon may limit the environmental risks of organic pollutants, but interactions with cosorbing humic acid (HA) may interfere. We studied the attenuative effect of HA additions on the sorption of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) to a charcoal. "Intrinsic" sorption to HA-amended charcoal was calculated by subtracting the sorption contribution of HA from the total sorption to charcoal and HA. Association of PCBs with HA was proportional to hydrophobicity. However, the planar PCBs 77 and 126 had an additional 2-4 times stronger association than expected from hydrophobicity alone. Sorption isotherms for the raw charcoal fitted slightly better to a three-parameter Polanyi-Dubinin-Manes model than to a two-parameter Langmuir model. Preloading the charcoal with 1-75 mg of HA/g of charcoal increasingly attenuated sorption to charcoal with up to a factor of 10. The resultant isotherms could be described adequately with the Freundlich model. Isotherm nonlinearity increased with HA loading, suggesting increased sorption competition between HA and PCBs. Attenuation was negligible in the PCB picogram per liter to nanogram per liter range and increased at higher PCB concentrations, which points to saturation of binding sites on the charcoal. Attenuation was highest for planar congeners, which suggests an additional site blockage mechanism. These variations due to HA loading and PCB concentration can explain the variability in attenuation reported in earlier work and imply that the use of constant "attenuation factors" to adjust sorption coefficients determined for pure carbonaceous materials in order to apply them to field situations may not be warranted.

Characterization of sorbent properties of soil organic matter and carbonaceous geosorbents using n-alkanes and cycloalkanes as molecular probes

Nonspecific interactions and modes (i.e., adsorption vs absorption) of sorption by noncondensed, amorphous organic phases (here termed organic matter; OM) in soils and by rigid, aromatic, and condensed phases (termed carbonaceous geosorbents; CGs) were investigated using n-alkanes and cycloalkanes as molecular probes. Sorption isotherms of n- and cyclooctane from water for seven CGs (charcoal, lignite coke, activated carbon, graphite, partially oxidized graphite, diesel soot, bituminous coal), four sorbents with a predominance of OM (lignite, peat, two sapric soils), and two soils containing OM and high amounts of CGs were measured in batch systems. The peat and the sapric soils showed extensively linear sorption, while the CGs exhibited highly nonlinear (Freundlich exponents 0.2-0.7) and strong (Koc values being up to 10(5) times those for the OM-rich materials at low concentrations) sorption for the alkanes studied, showing that enhanced sorption by CGs can occur to completely apolar sorbates that do not undergo any specific interaction. Sorption by CGs was generally stronger and more nonlinear for n-octane than for cyclooctane, which suggests a strong dependence of sorption on the 3-D structure of sorbate molecules. The n-octane-to-cyclooctane sorption coefficient ratios (Kn/Kc) for adsorption to CGs were > or = 1, being distinctly different from those for absorption to the OM-rich materials (Kn/Kc < 1). The measured sorption isotherms and the CG compositions in the soils determined by quantitative petrography analysis suggest, however, that CGs occurring in soils may be far less effective sorbents than the reference CGs used in the sorption experiments at least for nonspecifically interacting sorbates, probably because of competitive sorption and/or pore blocking by natural OM. The presented approaches and results offer a basis for interpreting sorption data for other organic compounds, as nonspecific interactions and sorption modes are relevant for any compound.

Freely dissolved concentrations and sediment-water activity ratios of PCDD/Fs and PCBs in the open Baltic Sea

Aqueous concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and -furans (PCDD/Fs) as well as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the open sea have heretofore been measured by filtering and extracting large amounts of water. Measurement of freely dissolved concentrations with this technique is difficult because of corrections for sorption to dissolved organic matter. In this study we use a novel, more economic technique using equilibrium passive samplers consisting of 17-microm thin polyoxymethylene (POM-17), capable of measuring freely dissolved aqueous concentrations (Cw) in pristine (i.e., background) locations. POM-17 was employed in an extensive field campaign at five stations in the open Baltic sea to obtain Cw at two depths (1 m above the seafloor and 25 m below the surface). Median Cw in the overlying water was 2.3 pg toxic equivalents (TEQ)/m3 PCDD/Fs and 15 pg/L sum 7-PCB, with generally less than a factor two variation among sites and depths. Also freely dissolved concentrations of native compounds in the surface sediment porewater (C(PW)) were determined in laboratory batch experiments. The data were used to derive sediment-water activity ratios, which indicate the diffusive flux direction. It was found that the PCDD/Fs and PCBs were in close equilibrium between the sediment porewater and the overlying water. Comparison of C(PW) with total sediment concentrations indicated that more than 90% of the compounds were sorbed to sedimentary black carbon.

Comparison of two reference black carbons using a planar PCB as a model sorbate

In studies assessing sorption of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) in natural systems, the choice of an appropriate reference black carbon, which can represent environmental black carbon (BC), is essential. This study compared isotherms of two commonly available and distinct reference BCs (n-hexane soot (BCRM) and diesel particulate matter (SRM 2975)) and a natural sediment from a source with little black carbon (Lake Hartwell, SC) using 3,3',4-trichlorobiphenyl (IUPAC #35) as a model sorbate. There was greater sorptivity for PCB-35 by BCRM than by SRM 2975. The observed differences in sorption between the two reference black carbons for PCB-35 may be ascribed to the different chemical characteristics of the black carbons. Differences in pore volume distribution at <16A pore width are less likely to be responsible for the observed differences in sorption. The elemental analysis confirmed that BCRM was a pure n-hexane soot because only C, H and O were measured. In contrast, SRM 2975 also contained N and S and a higher O% than BCRM. Compared to the low BC sediment, the two reference BCs had greater pore volume distributions, surface areas, total pore volumes and sorption. The observed nF (i.e., Freundlich exponent) values for PCB indicated greater linearity of the isotherms for the natural sediment than for the reference black carbons. For designing studies of sorption of HOCs in natural systems, in particular, when PCBs are contaminants of concern, results of this study can aid selection of the appropriate reference BCs.

Effect of heavy metals on the sorption of hydrophobic organic compounds to wood charcoal

Black carbon (BC) is believed to be an important adsorbent of organic pollutants. A complex suite of heavy metals and organic pollutants is commonly present in many situations. An issue that has received little direct attention is the effect of heavy metals on sorption of organic compounds to BC. We found that coadsorption of Cu2+ at an environmentally relevant, comparable concentration (50 mg L-1) decreases sorption of both the polar compound, 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP), and nonpolar compounds, 1,2-dichlorobenzene (DCB) and naphthalene (NAP), by 30-60%, as measured bythe change in the distribution coefficient (Kd). This was attributed to surface complexation of CU2+ to form hydration shells of dense water that directly compete with organics for adsorption surface area. In contrast, coadsorption of Ag+ increases sorption of the organic solutes, which was accounted for by the decline in hydrophilicity of the local region around Ag+-complexed functionalities due to softness of the cation, leading to mitigated competitive sorption of water. Coadsorption of heavy metal ions to nonporous graphite, a model of the BC graphene (polycyclic aromatic) structure that has no 0-containing groups, however, only slightly inhibits organic adsorption due to the low affinities of metal ions to graphite surface. The results of the present study showed that the presence of coexisting heavy metals greatly affects sorption of organic pollutants on BC and thereby their fate and transport.

Relationship between carbonaceous materials and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the sediments of the Danshui River and adjacent coastal areas, Taiwan

Persistent organic pollutants, POPs (e.g., polychlorinated biphenyls) can seriously and deleteriously affect environmental quality and human health. These organic pollutants are exhibiting high affinities to solid phases and thus, quickly end up in sediments. To better understand the role of carbonaceous materials in the transport and distributions of POPs in terrestrial and near-shore environments, concentrations of PCBs and carbonaceous materials (including total organic carbon, black carbon and total carbohydrates), were determined in surface sediments of the Danshui River and nearby coastal areas, Taiwan. Total concentrations of PCBs in the sediments ranged from non-detectable to 83.9 ngg(-1), dry weight, with the maximum value detected near the discharge point of the marine outfall from the Pali Sewage Treatment Plant. These results suggest that the sewage treatment plant has discharged PCBs in the past and the concentrations are still high due to their persistence; alternatively, PCBs are still being discharged in the estuarine and near-shore environment of the Danshui River. Organic carbon and black carbon concentrations correlated well with those of total PCBs in the sediments, suggesting that both organic carbon and black carbon significantly affect the distribution of trace organic pollutants through either post-depositional adsorption, or by co-transport of similar source materials. The field results demonstrate that black carbon and plays an important role in the general distribution of PCBs, while concentrations of some specific PCBs are affected by both black carbon and organic carbon concentrations.
