Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is a common psychological disorder, and traditional therapeutic drugs often result in side effects such as emesis, dry mouth, headache, dysentery and constipation. Probiotics and goat milk have garnered widespread attention for their ability to modulate immune function and regulate the endocrine system, and for their anti-inflammatory effects. In this work, the effects of Tibetan goat kefir on the behavior, immune status, neuroendocrine response and gut microbiological composition of chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) mouse models were evaluated. RESULTS The results indicated that Tibetan kefir goat milk significantly alleviated behavioral despair in mice. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that Tibetan kefir goat milk mitigated the inflammatory response in the mice and moderated the hyperactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor. Meanwhile, chronic stress-induced gut microbial abnormalities were restored. In addition, the correlation between gut microbiota and nervous system was evaluated. CONCLUSION These results explained the potential mechanism of Tibetan kefir in the antidepressant effect on the CUMS model and enriched diets for depressed patients. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Major depressive disorder (MDD) represents a serious public health problem that affects a quarter billion individuals worldwide. Consequently, there is a need to identify modifiable factors of services that support treatment success. The relationship between circadian preferences (i.e., chronotype), treatment time of day, and outcomes is an understudied research area. Executing optimal treatment timing based on these factors could lead to substantial returns on a modifiable variable. METHOD The present study evaluated the associations between chronotype and treatment time of day on post-treatment depression symptom severity. In a tertiary setting, outpatients with MDD (n = 227) received 14 sessions of cognitive behavioural therapy in a group format, at one of three time of days: morning, afternoon, or evening. Participants completed measures of depression and chronotype at baseline and post-treatment. RESULT Statistically significant increases in morningness were found for the afternoon and evening groups, but not the morning group. There was no significant interaction effect between pre-treatment morningness-eveningness scores and treatment time of day on post-treatment depression scores nor treatment response. However, there was a significant interaction effect of change in morningness-eveningness scores and post-treatment depression severity in the afternoon group. LIMITATIONS The lack of a control group limits conclusions drawn. CONCLUSION The results suggest that individual circadian phase may impact treatment outcomes in relation to time of day. Further intentionally designed research is warranted to improve understanding of predictors, moderators, and mediators of patient outcomes based on treatment time of day and circadian phase and amplitude.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aims to investigate age- and gender-specific effects of household solid fuels for heating on major depression and buffering effects of outdoor time in a high-income country. METHODS Data were obtained from the UK Biobank. Participants with complete information on our studied variables and no prior diagnosis of major depression at baseline were included. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to examine the effects of household solid fuels for heating on major depression. Subgroup analyses were conducted to investigate the buffering effects of outdoor time in summer and winter. Sensitivity analyses were performed to test the robustness of the main findings. RESULTS Of 255,505 participants (50.2 % women), the 12-year cumulative incidence of major depression was 4.4 %. Household solid fuels for heating increased the risk of major depression only in women aged <45 years (HR (95%CI) = 1.30 (1.04, 1.63)). In this group, the solid fuel effect was moderated by outdoor time spending both in summer (HR (95%CI), ≤2 h/day: 1.61 (1.13, 2.28); >2 h/day: 1.13 (0.84, 1.52)) and winter (≤1 h/day: 1.35 (1.01, 1.08); >1 h/day: 1.24 (0.86, 1.77)). LIMITATIONS Self-reported measures might lead to recall bias and some potential confounders, such as ventilation efficiency, were not measured and controlled in data analyses. CONCLUSIONS Younger women are more vulnerable to the impact of domestic air pollution on major depression. Promoting outdoor activities is a cost-effective and efficient approach to mitigating the risk of major depression caused by household solid fuels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) combined with pharmacotherapy is a promising treatment method for depression. However, its treatment mechanism needs further research. METHODS This study recruited 38 healthy individuals (HC) and 52 patients with severe depression (MDD) and divided patients into two treatment groups: the rTMS combined antidepressant (rTMS+ADP) group and the single antidepressant (ADP) group. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to calculate the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) to investigate the functional change after treatment. RESULT The fALFF in the left DLPFC was significantly lower in the MDD group than that in the HC group (p < 0.05). In addition, fALFF values of the left DLPFC negatively correlated with HAMD-24 scores (r = -0.294, p = 0.005). After treatment, both MDD groups showed a significant decrease in HAMD-24 scores, with a response rate of 88.89 % and a remission rate of 62.96 % in the rTMS+ADP group, compared to 64 % response and 56 % remission rates in the ADP group. The fALFF values in patients' left DLPFC significantly reduced in the rTMS+ADP group (p < 0.05), but not in the ADP group. LIMITATIONS Our study only focused on the treatment effect in the left DLPFC, without exploring the other brain regions or networks. CONCLUSIONS This study emphasizes the significance of the left DLPFC in MDD treatment. However, combined left DLPFC rTMS with ADP causes deviation from the normal resting brain function of the left DLPFC, indicating that future research should explore targeted treatment methods to normalize the left DLPFC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychological resilience can be augmented through the acquisition of specific cognitive or emotional regulation skills, enabling children to adapt to or recover from stressful events, disadvantages, or adversities. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a Tianchang Resilience-focused inTervention program (TRT1 program) on resilience and mental health conditions of Chinese children. METHODS This study was a two-arm cluster-randomized controlled trial, performed in Tianchang, a county in China. Students from 20 classes in a local primary school (aged 8.7-11.2 years) were randomly allocated to receive a resilience-focused intervention or waitlist group. The intervention comprised weekly 40-min sessions for 14 weeks and co-led by lay counsellors. Measures of emotional symptoms, behavioral difficulties, and resilience were collected at pre-, post-intervention, 6-months, and 12-months follow-up. RESULTS Between June 16, 2022, and September 4, 2022, 775 eligible students were recruited (mean age 9.93 years; 420 [54.2 %] boys). Relative to the waitlist group (N = 391), the intervention group (N = 384) reported a significant reduction in depressive and anxiety symptoms at post-intervention (all p < 0.001), 6-months (p = 0.007; p = 0.002) and 12-months follow-up (p = 0.018; p = 0.018), respectively. The intervention group effects were also observed on resilience at post-intervention follow-up (p = 0.006), and remained stable over 6-months (p < 0.001) and 12-months follow-up (p = 0.022). CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrated that the TRT program, a universal resilience-focused intervention for children in the school setting, showed long-term effectiveness in improving resilience and mental health conditions. This minimally trained laypersons-delivered intervention might enhance the program's generalizability to other communities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies exploring early life-course BMI trajectories and subsequent mental health outcomes are limited but may provide important insights for early intervention. We investigated associations between BMI trajectories from 0 to 18 years and mental health outcomes in emerging adulthood. METHODS Data were obtained from 434 participants in the Melbourne Atopy Cohort Study (MACS). Anthropometric data were collected across 26 timepoints from infancy to age 25 and group-based trajectory modelling was used to develop BMI trajectories from 0.1 to 18 years. Moderate-to-severe psychological distress (MSPD) and likely depression were assessed at age 18 and 25 years. Associations between BMI trajectories and mental health at 25 years and change in mental health between 18 and 25 years were estimated using logistic regression. History of asthma, hay fever or eczema were independently examined as potential effect modifiers. RESULTS Five BMI trajectories were identified from 1 month to 18 years. When compared to the stable average BMI trajectory, we found an increased risk of MSPD (OR = 2.97; 95%CI: 1.09,8.06) and likely depression (3.56; 1.39,9.12) at age 25 in the average increasing-to-high trajectory. This group also had a greater likelihood of new-onset depression (4.82; 1.54,15.0) from 18 to 25 years of age. LIMITATIONS MACS participants are not representative of the general population and mental health data was not available before 18 years of age. CONCLUSION Excessive weight gain across the childhood transition was associated with poorer mental health in emerging adulthood, highlighting the importance of monitoring growth to allow for early identification and stratification of individuals at risk of poor mental health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Politically and economically unstable contexts have been associated with increased prevalence rates of depression. Despite high demand, the availability of mental health experts and care systems is limited in Arabic-speaking countries. Internet-based interventions might provide an opportunity to treat patients independently of location. Therefore, we investigated the efficacy of internet-based cognitive behavioral treatment (iCBT) and interpersonal treatment (iIPT) for depression in Arabic-speaking countries. METHODS In total, 743 Arabic-speaking adults with depression were randomly allocated to iCBT (n = 243), iIPT (n = 247), or waitlist (n = 253). Depressive, anxiety, and somatoform symptoms, perceived social support and quality of life (QoL) were assessed at pre-, and post-treatment and at three months follow-up. Multiple imputation was performed for missing data. Changes associated with treatment were analyzed using regression in the completer and intention-to-treat sample. RESULTS Participants in both treatment groups showed lower depressive and anxiety symptom severity, higher QoL, and perceived social support compared to the waitlist group (p < .001). Somatoform symptom severity was significantly lower in participants receiving iIPT compared to waitlist (p < .001). Differences between the two treatments in all outcomes were non-significant (p > .05). Three-month follow-up treatment effects regarding depressive symptoms were indicated. LIMITATIONS The sample mainly consists of educated, single, female adults. Three-month follow-up results rely on a small subsample and must be interpreted with caution. CONCLUSIONS This is the first randomized controlled trial to demonstrate the efficacy of iCBT and iIPT for depression in Arabic-speaking countries. It provides first indications that internet-based interventions might help specific individuals in this region.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE COVID-19 significantly contributed to an increase in psychological distress and may have disproportionally impacted certain sociodemographic groups. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of psychological distress among Australian adults aged 18-64 years and identify sociodemographic factors associated with psychological distress during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS Secondary analyses were conducted using data from the National Health Survey 2020-21 to calculate weighted national estimates of the prevalence of psychological distress using the Kessler Psychological Distress scale (K10). The association between sociodemographic factors and psychological distress was analysed using multivariable logistic regression, with adjustments for complex survey design. RESULTS The average of K10 score was 16.94, with a prevalence of combined high/very high distress reported at 21.13 % among Australian adults. Young women aged 18-25 reported the highest average scores (M = 20.44) across all sex and age groups. Risk factors associated with psychological distress included lower personal income, marital status (never married; widowed/divorced/separated) and being 'born in Australia'. Protective factors included homeownership and having children in the household. Additionally, among women, being aged ≥56 was significantly associated with lower odds of psychological distress. LIMITATIONS Data collection relied on self-completed online form, and a cross-sectional design limits the inference of a causal relationship. DISCUSSION During COVID-19 pandemic, lower personal income and being female have consistently been identified as risk factors for psychological distress. Targeted and tailored interventions based on age, sex and disadvantage are warranted, particularly focusing on younger women, to alleviate the adverse effect of the pandemic on the population's mental health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Young migrants face multiple challenges that can affect their mental, sexual and reproductive health. OBJECTIVE To assess the prevalence of self-reported poor mental health and its associated demographic, post-migration and sexual risk behaviour factors among young migrants (aged 15-25) in Sweden. METHODS Data were drawn from a cross-sectional survey conducted with migrants aged 15-65 years old in Sweden between December 2018 and November 2019 (n = 6449). Among these, 990 participants aged 15-25 were eligible for the study. Mental health was measured using the Refugee Health Screener-13. Missing data indicator analysis and multivariable logistic regression models were conducted to estimate the association between mental health, sexual risk behaviour, demographic and migration-related variables. RESULTS Of the 990 participants, 59% reported poor mental health. Participants reporting poor mental health were more likely to be female (AOR:1.63, 95% CI:1.18-2.25), to have lived in Sweden more than three years (AOR:2.16, 95% CI:1.17-3.97), to engage in any sexual risk behaviour (AOR:1.99, 95% CI:1.25-3.17), and to live alone (AOR:1.95, 95% CI:1.25-3.03) or with friends they already knew (AOR:1.60, 95% CI:1.37-4.91). People arriving from the Americas (AOR:0.54, 95% CI:0.33-0.88), Asia (AOR:0.44, 95% CI:0.22-0.86), Europe (AOR:0.30, 95% CI:0.14-0.61) and Africa (AOR 0.37, 95% CI: 0.23-0.60) had lower odds of poor mental health than those arriving from Syria. CONCLUSION The prevalence of poor mental health among young migrants in Sweden was high, with specific subgroups (women, asylum seekers, people arriving from Syria, and those residing longer in Sweden) being particularly vulnerable. Our results indicate the interconnectedness between poor mental health and sexual risk behaviour in this population. Thus, policies targeting young migrants should ensure that healthcare services screen for both poor sexual and mental health at the same time.

Abstract
The advent of the metaverse, including virtual reality, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence, is an undeniable issue that health care scientists need to update. It influences all fields of knowledge, interpersonal relationships, and health. Regarding mental health since the post-coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, it is necessary to consider and understand the potential, possibilities, weaknesses, and consequences arising from and provided by this new scenario. Due to the increasing need for mental health monitoring and care, mental health treatments require in-depth training and preparation to achieve the maximum use of the metaverse advantages and possibilities. Currently, very little is known about the effectiveness of remote mental health treatment, but it is certainly suggested that accessibility and the characteristics associated with the use of metaverse technologies may represent new horizons for accessibility and approach tools, as long as more studies are carried out and more evidence is collected to develop accurate guidelines, safe training, solve ethical concerns, and overcome limitations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is an effective treatment in major depressive disorder (MDD). However, intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) and rTMS protocols using 10 Hz stimulation frequency might differ in their effect on neuroplasticity and on clinical symptoms. This study compares the effect of iTBS and a novel 10 Hz-rTMS with shortened single session duration, on motor excitability and neuroplasticity and on clinical symptoms in MDD. METHODS 30 patients with MDD received either iTBS or the novel 10 Hz-rTMS daily over three weeks to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Before and after the interventions, motor excitability, short-latency intracortical inhibition and long-term-potentiation-like plasticity in the motor cortex and clinical symptoms were measured by use of transcranial magnetic stimulation. RESULTS After the intervention, the level of neuroplasticity increased and clinical symptoms of depression were reduced in both groups, though both effects were significantly stronger after the novel 10 Hz-rTMS. Importantly, the changes in neuroplasticity and clinical symptoms were correlated: the stronger neuroplasticity increased, the stronger was the improvement of clinical symptoms. LIMITATIONS Short intervention period of 3 weeks. Clinical symptoms were measured by self-assessment only and are therefore preliminary. CONCLUSIONS The novel 10 Hz-rTMS is more effective in increasing neuroplasticity in MDD and potentially also in reducing clinical symptoms than iTBS. This might be due to a differential mode of action on neuroplasticity and to the stimulation frequency of 10 Hz (within the alpha range) being more suitable to reset the brain's activity and to support neuroplastic changes.

Abstract
Selective serotonin (5-HT) reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like fluoxetine remain a first-line treatment for major depression, but are effective in less than half of patients and can take 4-8 weeks to show results. In this study, we examined cF1ko mice with genetically induced upregulation of 5-HT1A autoreceptors that reduces 5-HT neuronal activity. These mice display anxiety- and depression-related behaviors that did not respond to chronic fluoxetine treatment. We examined treatment with NLX-101, a biased agonist that preferentially targets 5-HT1A heteroreceptors. By testing different doses of NLX-101, we found that a dose of 0.2 mg/kg was effective in reducing depression-related behavior in cF1ko mice without causing hypothermia, a 5-HT1A autoreceptor-mediated response. After 1 h, this dose activated dorsal raphe 5-HT neurons and cells in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), increasing nuclear c-fos labelling in cF1ko mice. In cF1ko mice but not wild-type littermates, 0.2 mg/kg NLX-101 administered 1 h prior to each behavioral test for two weeks reduced depressive behavior in the forced swim test, but increased anxiety-related behaviors in the open field, elevated plus maze, and novelty suppressed feeding tests. During this treatment, NLX-101 induced widespread increases in the density of 5-HT axons, varicosities, and especially synaptic and triadic structures, particularly in depression-related brain regions including mPFC, hippocampal CA1 and CA2/3, amygdala and nucleus accumbens of cF1ko mice. Overall, NLX-101 was rapid and effective in reducing depressive behavior in SSRI-resistant mice, but also induced anxiety-related behaviors. The increase in serotonin innervation induced by intermittent NLX-101 may contribute to its behavioral actions.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Depression is a prevalent stress disorder, yet the underlying physiological mechanisms linking stress to appetite and weight loss remain elusive. While most antidepressants are associated with excessive weight and appetite gain, sertraline (SER) exhibits a lower risk of these side effects. Metacinnabar (β-HgS), the primary component of Tibetan medicine Zuotai, has been shown to enhance mice's resilience against external stress without causing excessive increases in weight or appetite. However, the precise physiological pathway through which β-HgS restores appetite and weight in stressed mice remains unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY The objective of this study is to assess the efficacy of β-HgS in ameliorating weight loss and appetite suppression induced by pressure stimulation in mice, as well as elucidate its potential mechanisms of action. METHODS The present study employed chronic restraint stress (CRS) and chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) as experimental models to simulate environmental stress encountered in daily life. Subsequently, a series of experiments were conducted, including behavior tests, HE staining of rectal and hippocampal pathological sections, detection of depression-related biological indicators, analysis of intestinal flora diversity, as well as metabolomics analysis of hippocampal and intestinal contents. RESULT Dysregulation of glycerophospholipid metabolism may represent the principal pathway underlying reduced appetite, body weight, neurotransmitter and appetite hormone levels, heightened inflammatory response, hippocampal and rectal tissue damage, as well as altered composition of intestinal microbiota in stressed mice. Following intervention with SER and β-HgS in stressed mice, the deleterious effects induced by stress can be ameliorated, in which the medium-dose β-HgS exhibited superior performance. CONCLUSION The aforementioned research findings suggest that the stress-induced decrease in appetite and body weight in mice may be associated with dysregulation in glycerophospholipid metabolism connecting the gut-brain axis. β-HgS exhibits potential in ameliorating depressive-like symptoms in mice subjected to stress, while concurrently restoring their body weight and appetite without inducing excessive augmentation. Its therapeutic effect may also be attributed to its ability to modulate glycerophospholipid metabolism status and exert influence on the gut-brain axis.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent psychiatric disorder associated with brain inflammation and neuronal damage. Derived from the Aesculus chinensis Bunge fruit, escin has shown anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects. However, its potential as a treatment for MDD is unclear. This study investigates the antidepressant properties of escin using in vivo experimentation. The chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) model was used to analyze the potential antidepressant effects and underlying mechanisms of escin. Wistar rats were exposed to CUMS for 35 consecutive days to induce MDD. The rats were then given either escin (1, 3, and 10 mg/kg) or fluoxetine (2 mg/kg) on a daily basis. Notably, escin significantly alleviated the depressive behaviors induced by CUMS, as evaluated through a series of behavioral assessments. Moreover, escin administration reduced TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 levels in the hippocampus. It also decreased serum adrenal cortical hormone (ACTH) and corticosterone (CORT) levels while increasing 5-HT and Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels in the CUMS rats, as measured by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Pathological changes in the hippocampal regions were identified through Nissl staining, and Western blotting was used to quantify the protein levels of BDNF, TrkB, CREB, TLR4, MyD88, and NF-κB. Escin mitigated neuronal injury, elevated TrkB, BDNF, and CREB, and reduced TLR4, MyD88, and NF-κB protein levels in CUMS rats. The data from this study suggest that escin holds the potential for alleviating depression-like symptoms induced by CUMS. This effect may be mediated through the modulation of two signaling pathways, BDNF/TrkB/CREB and TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Emotion regulation (ER) is considered central in adolescent psychopathology, and ER strategies may change during challenging times, such as a global pandemic. Despite this, there remains a limited understanding of individual differences in ER mechanisms and their associations with psychopathology. This study examined whether and how cognitive reappraisal, expressive suppression, and self-compassion changed over COVID-19 and how these changes uniquely predicted adolescents' depressive symptoms. METHODS A total of 2,411 adolescents (58.6% females; Mage = 18.51, SD = 0.80) completed the Emotional Regulation Questionnaire, the Self-compassion Scale, and the Symptom Checklist-90 before COVID-19 (in 2019) and during COVID-19 (in 2020). The predictive associations between each ER strategy and depressive symptoms were tested with latent change score models. RESULTS Adolescents' use of expressive suppression and self-compassion strategies both increased during COVID-19. More increases in expressive suppression predicted more depressive symptoms, whereas more increases in self-compassion predicted fewer depressive symptoms. Although, on average, cognitive reappraisal did not change, it did show significant variations within the sample - increases (vs. decreases) in cognitive appraisal predicted fewer depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS The study indicates how adolescents' ER strategies changed during the unprecedented global pandemic. It underscores protective roles of increased cognitive reappraisal and self-compassion, as well as the adverse consequence of heightened expressive suppression on adolescents' depressive symptoms. Findings offer insights for targeted interventions aimed at addressing specific ER strategies.

Abstract
Depression is one of the most prevalent mental conditions which could impair people's productivity and lead to severe consequences. The diagnosis of this disease is complex as it often relies on a physician's subjective interview-based screening. The aim of our work is to propose deep learning models for automatic depression detection by using different data modalities, which could assist in the diagnosis of depression. Current works on automatic depression detection mostly are tested on a single dataset, which might lack robustness, flexibility and scalability. To alleviate this problem, we design a novel Graph Neural Network-enhanced Transformer model named DePressionDetect Net (DPD Net) that leverages textual, audio and visual features and can work under two different application settings: the clinical setting and the social media setting. The model consists of a unimodal encoder module for encoding single modality, a multimodal encoder module for integrating the multimodal information, and a detection module for producing the final prediction. We also propose a model named DePressionDetect-with-EEG Net (DPD-E Net) to incorporate Electroencephalography (EEG) signals and speech data for depression detection. Experiments across four benchmark datasets show that DPD Net and DPD-E Net can outperform the state-of-the-art models on three datasets (i.e., E-DAIC dataset, Twitter depression dataset and MODMA dataset), and achieve competitive performance on the fourth one (i.e., D-vlog dataset). Ablation studies demonstrate the advantages of the proposed modules and the effectiveness of combining diverse modalities for automatic depression detection.

Abstract
Although the tobacco plant has been employed as a medicinal and sacred herb by Indigenous cultures across the Americas, its usage drastically changed after the 15th-century colonial arrival; its large-scale commodification and global marketing once brought to Europe lead to hedonic and addictive uses harmful to health. As a consequence, tobacco smoking is now one of the largest public health problems worldwide. However, in the Peruvian Amazon, a region of origin of tobacco species, Indigenous healers still know how to use the plant for therapeutic purposes. Due to a general disregard of Indigenous knowledge and stigma, these uses have however not so far been clinically investigated. We hence conducted for the first time a clinical field study assessing a sample of patients treated by a traditional healer specialized in tobacco in the Peruvian Amazon (observational design, pilot study, N = 27). The study was conducted within a transdisciplinary and multi-epistemic medical frame, in close partnership with an Amazonian healer. We used validated self-report scales to quantitatively assess mental health variables before and after the weeklong treatment, and mixed-methods to report experienced effects. Paired-samples t-tests comparing pre- and post-treatment scores revealed significant reductions in anxiety, depression, perceived stress, and general symptom indicators. Experienced effects included initial physical discomfort, followed by psychologically or existentially/spiritually significant insights. Our findings point to a sophisticated therapeutic approach based on Indigenous knowledge of tobacco applications, which should be further investigated. The study also contributes to the burgeoning scientific field on therapeutic uses of contentious psychoactive plants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To better manage patients with a wide range of mental health problems, general practitioners would benefit from diagnostically accurate and time-efficient screening tools that comprehensively assess mental illness. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review was to identify screening tools that either take a multiple-mental disorder or a transdiagnostic approach. As primary and secondary outcomes, diagnostic accuracy and time efficiency were investigated. METHODS The data bases MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, Psyndex and PsycINFO were searched. Studies reporting on multiple-mental disorder or transdiagnostic screening tools used in primary care with adult patients were included. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value served as measures of diagnostic accuracy. Time efficiency was evaluated by the number of items of a screening tool and the time required for its completion and evaluation. RESULTS Eleven studies met the inclusion criteria. The majority of screening tools assessed multiple mental disorders separately. A sub-group of screening tools took a transdiagnostic approach by examining the spectrum of mood, anxiety and stress-related disorders. One screening tool used internalised, cognitive/somatic and externalised dysfunction as transdiagnostic domains of mental illness. Mostly, a sufficient sensitivity and specificity was reported. All screening tools were found to be time efficient. CONCLUSION The eleven identified screening tools can support general practitioners to identify patients with mental health problems. However, there was great heterogeneity concerning their diagnostic scope of psychopathology. Further screening tools for primary care are needed that target broad constructs of mental illness, such as transdiagnostic factors or personality dysfunction.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a debilitating mental disorder and the leading cause of disease burden. Major depressive disorder is associated with emotional impairment and cognitive deficit. Cognitive control, which is the ability to use perceptions, knowledge, and information about goals and motivations to shape the selection of goal-directed actions or thoughts, is a primary function of the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Psychotropic medications are one of the main treatments for MDD, but they are not effective for all patients. An alternative treatment is transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Previous studies have provided mixed results on the cognitive-enhancing effects of TMS treatment in patients with MDD. Some studies have found significant improvement, while others have not. There is a lack of understanding of the specific effects of different TMS protocols and stimulation parameters on cognitive control in MDD. Thus, this review aims to synthesize the effectiveness of the TMS methods and a qualitative assessment of their potential benefits in improving cognitive functioning in patients with MDD. We reviewed 21 studies in which participants underwent a treatment of any transcranial magnetic stimulation protocol, such as repetitive TMS or theta-burst stimulation. One of the primary outcome measures was any change in the cognitive control process. Overall, the findings indicate that transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) may enhance cognitive function in patients with MDD. Most of the reviewed studies supported the notion of cognitive improvement following TMS treatment. Notably, improvements were predominantly observed in inhibition, attention, set shifting/flexibility, and memory domains. However, fewer significant improvements were detected in evaluations of visuospatial function and recognition, executive function, phonemic fluency, and speed of information processing. This review found evidence supporting the use of TMS as a treatment for cognitive deficits in patients with MDD. The results are promising, but further research is needed to clarify the specific TMS protocol and stimulation locations that are most effective.

Abstract
Background In the low-resource rural areas, older adults may experience prolonged and severe depressive symptoms. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between uric acid, depressive symptoms and immunoinflammatory among rural older adults. Method This case-control study was conducted in 17 rural villages in Hunan Province, China, between January 2023 and April 2024. This study included 180 participants: (1) Rural Older Adults with Depressive Symptoms group:90 patients with first-time diagnosed with depressive symptoms (Geriatric Depression Scale-15, GDS-15 ≥ 5 scores); (2) Control group: 90 individually matched (age and sex) healthy subjects (GDS-15 < 5 scores) who were aged ≥60 years. Results Both males and females, depressive symptoms were associated with higher uric acid levels and C-reactive protein levels (All P < 0.05). Whereas in females, depressive symptoms were also linked to higher procalcitonin (P = 0.005) and serum amyloid A (P = 0.008) levels. In addition, C-reactive protein plays a significant mediating role between uric acid and depressive symptoms in males. Conclusion Further investigation is necessary to clarify the underlying mechanisms, examine gender-specific disparities, and assess potential therapeutic interventions targeting uric acid and inflammation levels to mitigate mental disorders risk.

Abstract
Although anxiety disorders present in many ways, they all share the key features of inappropriately high distress in the form of anxiety and fear responses to stimuli that are not actually dangerous and efforts to avoid or escape such stimuli. Problematic levels of fear and anxiety can result in many negative impacts on people's lives, across social, economic, and physical realms. Anxiety disorders as a whole are very prevalent in today's world, among both youth and adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Globally, the World Health Organization ranks major depressive disorder (MDD) as the leading cause of disability. However, MDD molecular etiology is still poorly understood.
AIM To explore the possible association between mitochondrial ND6 T14502C mutation and MDD.
METHODS Clinical data were collected from two pedigrees, and detailed mitochondrial genomes were obtained for the two proband members. The assessment of the resulting variants included an evaluation of their evolutionary conservation, allelic frequencies, as well as their structural and functional consequences. Detailed mitochondrial whole genome analysis, phylogenetic, and haplotype analysis were performed on the probands.
RESULTS Herein, we reported the clinical, genetic, and molecular profiling of two Chinese families afflicted with MDD. These Chinese families exhibited not only a range of onset and severity ages in their depression but also extremely low penetrances to MDD. Sequence analyses of mitochondrial genomes from these pedigrees have resulted in the identification of a homoplasmic T14502C (I58V) mutation. The polymorphism is located at a highly conserved isoleucine at position 58 of ND6 and distinct mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) polymorphisms originating from haplogroups M10 and H2.
CONCLUSION Identifying the T14502C mutation in two individuals with no genetic relation who exhibit symptoms of depression provides compelling evidence that this mutation may be implicated in MDD development. Nonetheless, the two Chinese pedigrees that carried the T14502C mutation did not exhibit any functionally significant mutations in their mtDNA. Therefore, the phenotypic expression of the T14502C mutation related to MDD may be influenced by the nuclear modifier gene(s) or environmental factors.

Abstract
Depression, which is a disease of heterogeneous etiology, is characterized by high disability and mortality rates. Gut microbiota are associated with the development of depression. To further explore any differences in the mechanisms of depression induced by gut microbiota and traditional stresses, as well as facilitate the development of microbiota-based interventions, a fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) depression model was made. This was achieved by transplanting feces from major depressive disorder (MDD) patients into germ-free mice. Second, the mechanisms of the depression induced by gut microbiota were analyzed in comparison with those of the depression caused by different forms of stress. It turned out that mice exhibited depressive-like behavior after FMT. Then, PCR array analysis was performed on the hippocampus of the depressed mice to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs). The KEGG analysis revealed that the pathways of depression induced by gut microbes are closely associated with immuno-inflammation. To determine the pathogenic pathways of physiological stress and psychological stress-induced depression, raw data was extracted from several databases and KEGG analysis was performed. The results from the analysis revealed that the mechanisms of depression induced by physiological and psychological stress are closely related to the regulation of neurotransmitters and energy metabolism. Interestingly, the immunoinflammatory response was distinct across different etiologies that induced depression. The findings showed that gut microbiota dysbiosis-induced depression was mainly associated with adaptive immunity, while physiological stress-induced depression was more linked to innate immunity. This study compared the pathogenesis of depression caused by gut microbiota dysbiosis, and physiological and psychological stress. We explored new intervention methods for depression and laid the foundation for precise treatment.

Abstract
The regional boom in digital economy has provided people with remote conversations and socialization while reducing the risk of depression. This study aims to elucidate whether regional digital economy can be a savior for individual depression. The multi-source dataset collects 11,845 individuals from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study 2018 (CHARLS), with the combination of corresponding regional data from China City Statistical Yearbooks. A series of regressions with integrated mediation and moderation analyses are employed to bridge the link between the digital economy and depression. The results suggest that people living in areas with a higher level of digital economy are less likely to suffer from depression. The development of the digital economy helps people find solace or air grievances more easily, thereby reducing the risk of depression. Individual information and communications technology (ICT) engagement is found to mediate the relationship between the regional digital economy and individual depression. Residence type moderates the association between the three casual pairs of digital economy, ICT engagement, and depression. Improved digitization stimulates personal engagement with ICTs, which in turn expands social connections and support. Strengthened social interactions naturally keep depression away. Moreover, the urban-rural differences further confirm the underlying mechanism. Properly embracing the new digital world can therefore benefit from the transformative potential and mitigate depressive outcomes.

Abstract
AIMS The impact of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection on the risk of self-harming behaviours warrants further investigation. Here, we hypothesized that people with a history of hospitalization for self-harm may be particularly at risk of readmission in case of SARS-CoV-2 hospitalization. METHODS We conducted a retrospective analysis based on the French national hospitalization database. We identified all patients hospitalized for deliberate self-harm (10th edition of the International Classification of Diseases codes X60-X84) between March 2020 and March 2021. To study the effect of SARS-CoV-2 hospitalization on the risk of readmission for self-harm at 1-year of the inclusion, we performed a multivariable Fine and Gray model considering hospital death as a competing event. RESULTS A total of 61,782 individuals were hospitalized for self-harm. During the 1-year follow-up, 9,403 (15.22%) were readmitted for self-harm. Between inclusion and self-harm readmission or the end of follow-up, 1,214 (1.96% of the study cohort) were hospitalized with SARS-CoV-2 (mean age 60 years, 52.9% women) while 60,568 were not (mean age 45 years, 57% women). Multivariate models revealed that the factors independently associated with self-harm readmission were: hospitalization with SARS-CoV-2 (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) = 3.04 [2.73-3.37]), psychiatric disorders (aHR = 1.61 [1.53-1.69]), self-harm history (aHR = 2.00 [1.88-2.04]), intensive care and age above 80. CONCLUSIONS In hospitalized people with a personal history of self-harm, infection with SARS-CoV-2 increased the risk of readmission of self-harm, with an effect that seemed to add to the effect of a history of mental disorders, with an equally significant magnitude. Infection may be a significantly stressful condition that precipitates self-harming acts in vulnerable individuals. Clinicians should pay particular attention to the emergence of suicidal ideation in these patients in the aftermath of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Abstract
Due to their good wearability, smart fabrics have gradually developed into one of the important components of multifunctional flexible electronics. Nevertheless, function integration is typically accomplished through the intricate stacking of diverse modules, which inevitably compromises comfort and elevates processing complexities. The integration of these discrete functional modules into a unified design for smart fabrics represents a superior solution. Here, we put forward a rational approach to functional integration for the typical challenges of thermal management, energy supply, and surface contamination in smart fabrics. This sandwich-structured multilayer fabric (MLF) is obtained by continuous electrospinning of two layer P(VDF-HFP) fabric and one layer P(VDF-HFP) fabric functionalized with core-shell SiO2/ZnO/ZIF-8 (SZZ) nanoparticles. Specifically, MLFs achieve effective and stable energy harvesting in triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) with hydrophobicity and antibacterial properties. Meanwhile, MLFs also have high mid-infrared emissivity and sunlight reflectivity, successfully realizing radiative cooling under different climates, and have been applied in wearing clothing, roof shading, and car covers. This work may contribute to the design and manufacturing of next-generation thermal comfort smart fabrics and wearable electronics, particularly in terms of the rational design of multifunctional devices.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Globally, anxiety and depression are primary contributors to work disability and impact the mental and physical wellbeing of educators. OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence and independent predictors of likely Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and likely Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) among teachers in Newfoundland and Labrador, Alberta, and Nova Scotia. METHODS The study utilized a cross-sectional design. Educators from the three Canadian provinces participated by completing an online survey after enrolling in the Wellness4Teachers program, a free self-subscription daily supportive text messaging initiative. The program was launched at the beginning of the 2022/2023 academic year, and all teachers in the three provinces were eligible to enroll. Likely GAD and likely MDD among subscribers were assessed using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 scale and Patient Health Questionnaire-9, respectively. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS version 28. RESULTS Out of 1912 Wellness4Teachers subscribers, 763 completed the survey, yielding a 39.9% response rate. The prevalence of likely MDD was 55.7%, and likely GAD was 46.0%. After controlling for all other variables in the regression model, participants who reported high stress were 7.24 times more likely to experience MDD (OR = 7.24; 95% CI: 4.22-12.42) and 7.40 times more likely to experience GAD (OR = 7.40; 95% CI: 4.63-11.80) than those with mild to moderate stress. Participants with emotional exhaustion were 4.92 times more likely to experience MDD (OR = 4.92; 95% CI: 3.01-8.05) and 4.34 times more likely to experience GAD (OR = 4.34; 95% CI: 2.47-7.62) than those who did not. Also, respondents with a lack of professional accomplishment were 2.13 times as likely to have MDD symptoms (OR = 2.13; 95% CI: 1.41-3.23) and 1.52 times more likely to experience GAD symptoms (OR = 1.524; 95% CI: 1.013-2.293) than those who did not. Similarly, respondents with low resilience were 1.82 times more likely to have likely MDD compared to those with normal to high resilience (OR = 1.82; 95% CI: 1.24-2.66). Additionally, respondents with low resilience were 3.01 times more likely to experience likely GAD compared to those with normal to high resilience (OR =3.01; 95% CI: 2.03-7.62). Participants with over 20 years of teaching experience were 0.28 times less likely to experience GAD symptoms than those with five years or less teaching experience (OR = 0.28; 95% CI: 0.12 - 0.64). Sociodemographic and work-related variables did not independently predict likely GAD and likely MDD. CONCLUSIONS This study underscores the need for governments and policymakers in the education sector to implement comprehensive mental health support programs. Addressing the unique stressors faced by educators, reducing emotional exhaustion, and enhancing resilience are crucial steps toward mitigating anxiety and depression, promoting educators' wellbeing, and improving the quality of educational delivery. Abstract
Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a common and persistent mental illness accompanied by uncontrollable worries for daily staff. Physiological, environmental, genetic, and daily stress from surroundings is involved in developing GAD. Here, we aimed to assess the association of stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) in the pathophysiology of GAD and their role as diagnostic tools. This case-control study recruited 50 GAD patients from the psychiatry department of a tertiary care teaching hospital in Dhaka city and 38 age-sex-matched healthy controls (HCs) from the surrounding areas. A qualified psychiatrist conducted standardized psychiatric interview to diagnose GAD patients and evaluate HCs by applying the diagnostic and statistical manual for mental disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5) and used the GAD-7 scale to assess the severity of the GAD symptoms. After confirming the inclusion and exclusion criteria, we collected 5 ml blood samples from each participant. We measured serum SDF-1 and EGF levels using ELISA techniques. We observed increased serum levels of EGF in GAD patients compared to HCs (5.91 ± 3.90 ng/ml vs. 1.59 ± 1.08 ng/ml; p < 0.001). Also, this increment is positively associated with the severity of GAD in patients (r = 0.479, p = 0.002). The receiver operating characteristic analysis showed good diagnostic performance (AUC 0.869, p < 0.001) with high sensitivity (82.5%), and specificity (81.1%) at cut off value of 2.31 ng/ml. However, we didn't find significant differences in serum SDF-1 levels between GAD patients and HCs (11.96 ± 4.50 ng/ml vs. 12.70 ± 11.76 ng/ml; p = 0.337). The present study suggests that GAD patients have increased serum EGF levels but not SDF-1 levels compared to HCs and that increased EGF levels are associated with increased GAD symptoms as well. Moreover, EGF levels could serve as a biomarker for GAD However, further interventional studies with larger and homogeneous samples are suggested to confirm and establish these findings.

Abstract
Current State of Research on Surf Therapy and its Possible Application as an Intervention for Adolescent Depression Abstract: Depression is one of the most common mental health disorders experienced in adolescence. Because of its high prevalence rates and significant impact on affected individuals, alternative and complementary interventions are being explored. In recent years, physical activity has received increasing attention as a form of treatment. Current reviews highlight the potential benefits of this therapeutic approach in reducing depressive symptoms. Surf therapy is an innovative approach in the field of physical activity that additionally utilizes the therapeutic effects of the ocean. It combines surfing with structured exercises to promote mental and physical well-being. Internationally, surf therapy is already being applied to children and adolescents dealing with mental health problems as well as to adults diagnosed with conditions such as depression and posttraumatic stress disorder. Initial studies suggest positive effects of surf therapy in terms of symptom reduction, although the research is limited and requires further investigation. We present our pilot study investigating the feasibility and effectiveness of surf therapy for the treatment of adolescent depression in Germany.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on various aspects of life. This study aims to investigate whether the COVID-19 pandemic changed food preferences, focusing on cost perceptions, environmental factors, and health attributes. We conducted a panel study with self-administered online surveys among undergraduate students in Chile, both before and during the first wave of the pandemic. Each survey included a discrete choice experiment (DCE) to elicit food preferences. Using mixed logit models, our analysis shows that during the COVID-19 pandemic, sensitivity to cost, preference for foods with low environmental impact, and preference for vitamin-rich foods increased. These changes in preferences can be attributed to individuals' perceived health risks. These findings suggest that the pandemic increased awareness of sustainable and healthy food choices, with important implications for promoting these choices during global crises.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The constant rise in the prevalence of major depressive disorder calls for new, effective, and accessible interventions that can rapidly and effectively reach a wide range of audiences. Recent developments in the digital health domain suggest that dedicated online platforms may potentially address this gap. Focusing on targeting ruminative thought, a major symptomatic hallmark of depression, in this study we hypothesized that delivering a digital health-based intervention designed to systematically facilitate thought progression would substantially alleviate depression. OBJECTIVE The study aims to investigate the efficacy of a novel digital intervention on the reduction of depressive symptoms. This intervention was designed as an easy-to-use gamified app specifically aimed to facilitate thought progression through intense practicing of associative, semantically broad, fast, and creative thought patterns. METHODS A randomized clinical trial was conducted, comparing changes in depression symptoms between participants who used the app in the intervention group (n=74) and waitlist control group (n=27) over the course of 8 weeks. All participants filled out a battery of clinical questionnaires to assess the severity of depression at baseline and 4 and 8 weeks after starting the study. These primarily included the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 as well as the Positive Affect Negative Affect Scale-Negative Affect Score, Ruminative Response Scale, and Symptoms of Depression Questionnaire. Additional questionnaires were implemented to assess anxiety, positive affect, anhedonia, and quality of life. RESULTS The results indicate that across multiple clinical measurements, participants in the intervention group who played the gamified app showed greater and faster improvement in depressive symptoms compared with their waitlist control counterparts. The difference between the groups in MADRS improvement was -7.01 points (95% CI -10.72 to -3.29; P<.001; Cohen d=0.67). Furthermore, the difference in improvement between groups persisted up to 4 weeks posttrial (MADRS differences at week 12: F49,2=6.62; P=.003; ηp2=0.21). At the end of the trial, participants who played the app showed high interest in continuing using the app. CONCLUSIONS The results demonstrate that a gamified app designed to facilitate thought progression is associated with improvement in depressive symptoms. Given its innovative and accessibility features, this gamified method aiming to facilitate thought progression may successfully complement traditional treatments for depression in the future, providing a safe and impactful way to enhance the lives of individuals experiencing depression and anxiety. Abstract
The objective of this paper is to summarise the policy implications of key findings from the 2020-22 Australian National Study of Mental Health and Wellbeing (NSMHWB). We provide an analysis of policy implications of four papers in this issue of the journal from the 2020-22 NSMHWB (N = 15,893) and the 2007 NSMHWB (N = 8841). The 2020-2022 NSMHWB reported a lifetime prevalence rate of common mental disorders of 40.2% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 39.2-41.3) and 12-month prevalence rate of 20.2% (95% CI 19.5-21.0). Overall, adult Australians were significantly more likely to experience a 12-month mental disorder in 2020-22 compared with 2007, with the change most striking in among those aged 16-24 years (odds ratio [OR] 1.2, 95% CI 1.1-1.3). Individuals aged 16-24 years in 2020-22 were significantly more likely to experience a 12-month anxiety disorder (OR 2.9, 95% CI = 2.3-3.7, depressive disorder (OR 2.8 95% CI = 2.1-3.9) or comorbidity (relative risk [RR] = 1.4, 95% CI = 1.2-1.7) compared with those aged 16-24 years in 2007. In 2020-22, the proportion of Australians who had experienced suicidal ideation, suicide plans and suicide attempts in the past 12 months was 3.3%, 1.1% and 0.3%. Under half (46.5% 95% CI 44.1-48.8) of adults with a 12-month mental disorder sought treatment. Mental disorders remain an endemic feature of Australia's overall health landscape and appear to be increasing, especially in younger cohorts. While service use rates have improved over time, there is still some way to go. Epidemiological surveys such as the 2020-22 NSMHWB are important for understanding changing prevalence and the population not accessing services. Innovative prevention and treatment strategies will be needed to address the increasing rates of disorders in younger Australian adults. Equally innovative and bold policy responses will be essential.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depressive disorders are a major public health issue in Western societies, particularly among adolescents, young adults and women. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated mental health challenges, increasing depression and anxiety symptoms, especially in younger people. This study focuses on the hard-hit Emilia-Romagna Region (ERR) in Italy, examining changes in antidepressant (AD) drug use post-COVID-19 to understand the pandemic's effect on mental health. METHODS A population-based interrupted time series design and a segmented regression analysis was carried out on ERR pharmaceutical data (FED, direct dispensation pharmaceuticals, AFT, territorial pharmaceutical assistance) out to estimate changes in AD use during the three pandemic years (2020, 2021 and 2022) compared to 2017-2019.Analyses were stratified by age, gender, citizenship, population density of the area of residence. RESULTS A notable increase in AD consumption compared to what was expected was observed among younger age groups, and especially in females. In the 12-19 age group, a gradual increase was recorded from January 2021 until it reached +48% in 2022 (+58% among women, +30% among men). An even more remarkable growth in AD usage among non-Italian residents in the same age group was recorded compared to expected. A relevant increase, although smaller, was detected among individuals in the 20-34 age group, with a peak of +9% in 2022. These differences persisted up until the end of the observation period. CONCLUSIONS The study suggests that the COVID-19 pandemic may have had a lasting negative impact on the mental health of younger individuals. The observed increase in AD use may foreshadow a potential long-term need for enhanced mental healthcare and services directed at this subpopulation.

Abstract
The ongoing war in Ukraine has significantly impacted the mental health of academic staff, with anxiety emerging as a predominant issue. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and severity of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) among Ukrainian academic staff and determine the influence of sociodemographic factors, such as gender, age, migration status, scientific degree, and job title, on anxiety levels. The research was conducted using a cross-sectional online survey between December 2023 and February 2024. The sample included 429 participants from various Ukrainian universities, representing both male and female academic staff, holding job positions such as assistants, senior lecturers, associate professors, and full professors. The findings revealed that 44.3% of participants experienced moderately severe to severe anxiety, with migration due to the full-scale war being a significant predictor of higher anxiety levels. Notably, male academic staff exhibited higher anxiety levels than their female counterparts, contrary to typical peacetime trends, suggesting that wartime responsibilities and societal expectations may play a crucial role. The data underscore the need for targeted mental health support, particularly for displaced academic staff, and highlight the importance of developing gender-specific interventions. These insights are vital for informing policies and support programs to enhance academic staff's mental health and productivity in conflict zones, ensuring the continuity and quality of scientific research during and after the war.

Abstract
The first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent health mandates resulted in significant disruptions to daily life, creating a period of heightened psychosocial stress in myriad aspects. Understanding the impact of this period on pregnant individuals' bacteriomes is crucial as pregnancy is a period of heightened vulnerability to stress and its sequelae, anxiety and mood disorders, which have been demonstrated to alter gut microbiome composition. In a prospective cohort study (N = 12-26) conducted from February 2019 to August 2021, we examined psychometric responses and rectal microbiome swabs from pregnant individuals. Full-length 16 S rRNA sequencing followed by calculation of diversity metrics and relative abundance values were used to interrogate fecal microbiome community composition across pandemic groups. Distinct shifts in bacterial diversity and composition were observed during early to late pregnancy in the pandemic group, including lower relative abundance of pathogenic and lesser-known taxa. However, distribution of stress and depressive symptoms did not significantly differ from the pre-pandemic period while the correlation between stress and depressive symptoms dissipated during the pandemic. Our findings suggest that living through the COVID-19 pandemic altered the gut microbiome of pregnant individuals, independent of perceived stress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To identify risk factors for mental distress and investigate whether the factors were different between men and women during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), using KOKOROBO data, which is an online platform that aims to facilitate access to mental health services. METHODS We used baseline data on KOKOROBO users 13 years of age or older in Japan who accessed it from October 11, 2021, to April 6, 2023, excluding those receiving treatment for mental health problems. Global severity, based on the most severe measure on Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), was analyzed using multivariable logistic regression with baseline characteristics for each gender, and for under 30 and 30 years of age or older in women. We conducted the same analysis of suicidal ideation for each gender. RESULTS In the 686 men and 1274 women, 117 (17.1%) and 100 (7.8%) had minimal global severity respectively, and the rest suffered from mental distress to some extent. For women, ages under 30 years (adjusted OR (aOR): 0.352, 95%CI: 0.231-0.539, P < 0.001), marriage (aOR: 0.453, 95%CI: 0.274-0.746, P = 0.002), and concerns about COVID-19 infection were associated with global severity, while having children (aOR: 0.509, 95% CI: 0.284-0.909, P = 0.023) and decrease of going out during the COVID-19 pandemic had a protective effect on global severity and suicidal ideation for men, respectively. Living with family was a risk factor for mental distress in unmarried women over 30 years of age. Less communication with family or others and responding to the questionnaire late at night (00:00-05:59) were associated with severe global severity in both genders. CONCLUSIONS Age, living arrangement, marriage, having children, concerns about COVID-19 infection, and lifestyle changes during the COVID-19 pandemic had gender-specific effects on mental distress, while frequent communication and regular life rhythm maintained mental health in both genders. Young women and, unmarried middle-aged women living with their families tended to experience mental distress during the COVID-19 pandemic. TRIAL REGISTRATION The Ethics Committee of the National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry approved this study (approval number B2020141) on April 15, 2021.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The occurrence of PTSD, depression, and anxiety is notably high among older adults following an earthquake. This research aimed to assess the prevalence and determinants of mental health conditions among older survivors after an earthquake. METHODS The review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA process. A comprehensive search was conducted across various databases including PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Scopus, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, SinoMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), the VIP Database for Chinese Technical Periodicals, and the Wan Fang Database for Chinese Periodicals for studies reporting on the prevalence of PTSD, depression, and anxiety among older survivors post-earthquake. Each database was searched from inception to August 1, 2023 each database, and updated the search on October 1, 2024. The random effects model was employed to conduct meta-analysis, and the I2 index was taken into account to evaluate heterogeneity among studies. A narrative synthesis was performed to identify the risk factors associated with these mental health conditions. RESULTS A total of 33 studies were analyzed in this meta-analysis, mainly from China, Japan, Nepal, and Mexico. The prevalence rates of PTSD, depression, and anxiety among older earthquake survivors were found to be 19.3 % (95 % CI [16.0-22.6 %]; I2 = 99.486 %, P = 0.000), 23.5 % (95 % CI [13.9-33.1 %]; I2 = 99.901 %, P = 0.000) and 10.9 % (95 % CI [6.7-15.1 %]; I2 = 99.287 %, P = 0.000), respectively. The identified major risk factors were categorized into four dimensions, including demographic variables (e.g., older age, chronic illness), pre-disaster mitigation variables (e.g., lack of insurance), responding in disaster variables (e.g., being injured, property damage) and post-disaster relief variables (e.g., inadequate psychological care, low levels of social/family support). LIMITATIONS The optimal cut-off for different screening tools may be sensitive to changes in the prevalence of older survivors post-earthquake. Furthermore, due to the heterogeneity of the studies, a narrative synthesis of risk factors was conducted. CONCLUSIONS The findings of this review may increase the awareness of the burden and risk factors associated with PTSD, depression, and anxiety in older survivors post-earthquake. It serves as a reference for the government in formulating recovery policies focusing on interventions, such as financial allocation, psychological treatment, and insurance claims. These policies aim to mitigate the long-term psychological effects on older survivors and ultimately lower the prevalence of mental health conditions.

Abstract
The implication of 5-hydroxytryptamine 2C receptor (5-HT2CR) activity in depression is a topic of debate, and the underlying mechanisms remain largely unclear. Here, we elucidate how hippocampal excitation-inhibition (E/I) balance underlies the regulatory effects of 5-HT2CR in depression. Molecular biological analyses showed that chronic mild stress (CMS) reduced the expression of 5-HT2CR in hippocampus. We revealed that inhibition of 5-HT2CR induced depressive-like behaviours, reduced GABA release and shifted the E/I balance towards excitation in CA3 pyramidal neurons using behavioural analyses, microdialysis coupled with mass spectrometry and electrophysiological recordings. Moreover, 5-HT2CR modulated the neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS)-carboxy-terminal PDZ ligand of nNOS (CAPON) interaction by influencing intracellular Ca2+ release, as determined by fibre photometry and coimmunoprecipitation. Notably, disruption of nNOS-CAPON with the specific small molecule compound ZLc-002 or AAV-CMV-CAPON-125C-GFP abolished 5-HT2CR inhibition-induced depressive-like behaviours, as well as the impairment in soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor attachment protein receptor (SNARE) complex assembly-mediated GABA vesicle release and consequent E/I imbalance. Importantly, optogenetic inhibition of CA3 GABAergic neurons prevented the effects of AAV-CMV-CAPON-125C-GFP on depressive behaviours in the presence of a 5-HT2CR antagonist. Conclusively, our findings disclose the regulatory role of 5-HT2CR in depressive-like behaviours and highlight hippocampal nNOS-CAPON coupling-triggered E/I imbalance as a pivotal cellular event underpinning the behavioural consequences of 5-HT2CR inhibition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Suicidal ideation may be a warning sign for suicide and previous work has indicated a higher prevalence of suicidal ideation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Job loss and job insecurity are potential risk factors for suicidal ideation, but their importance during the pandemic, and the role of organizational changes for suicidal ideation, is unclear. This study examined the association between various experiences associated with job loss and job insecurity during the pandemic and thoughts of suicide/self-harm in Sweden. METHODS The study sample was drawn from the Swedish Longitudinal Occupational Survey of Health (SLOSH). Auxiliary data collections in February 2021 and 2022 assessed exposure to job loss/unemployment, furlough, workplace downsizing, or increased job insecurity versus stable employment and thoughts of suicide or self-harm (PHQ-9) during the pandemic. The analyses were based on 1558 individuals (2 349 observations) participating in either or both waves and who had been working before the pandemic. Logistic regression models with cluster-robust standard errors were fitted, including sociodemographic factors and prior mental health problems to control for potential confounding. Measures of personality based on a brief version of the Big-Five personality inventory were also added. RESULTS The results indicated an association between all experiences, except furlough, and thoughts of suicide/self-harm, when adjusting for sex, age, civil status, socioeconomic status and prior mental health (job loss odds ratio (OR) = 3.70, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.79-7.63, downsizing OR = 2.41, CI 1.24-4.70, job insecurity OR = 2.77, CI 1.15-6.67). The associations for job loss and insecurity were attenuated by adjustment for personality, although it remained statistically significant for downsizing. CONCLUSIONS The results suggested a higher risk of suicidal ideation connected with loss of employment and survival of a downsizing, but not a forced reduction in working times/pay during the COVID-19 pandemic. The association for subjective job insecurity was less robust and may be partly explained by personality.

Abstract
Depressive disorder (DD) ranks among the most prevalent, burdensome, and costly psychiatric conditions globally. It manifests through a range of emotional, cognitive, somatic, and behavioral symptoms. Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) have garnered significant attention due to their therapeutic potential via immunomodulation in neurological disorders. Our research indicates that MSCs treatment demonstrates a notable effect on a Chronic Unpredictable Mild Stress (CUMS)-induced DD model in mice, surpassing even Fluoxetine in its antidepressant efficacy. MSCs mitigate DD by inhibiting central nervous system inflammation and facilitating the conversion of microglial cells into an Arg1high anti-inflammatory state. The MSCs-derived TGF-β1 is crucial for this Arg1high microglial cell transformation in DD treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although long-term exposures to air pollutants have been linked to mental disorders, existing studies remain limited and inconsistent. We investigated the relationship between exposure to particulate matter (PM) and depressive symptoms, as well as the potential role of sleep duration and physical activity. METHOD Using the surveillance data (2019 to 2022) of common diseases and risk factors among 312,390 students aged 10-25 years, logistic regression, generalized liner model (GLM) and restricted cubic spline (RCS) were employed to investigate the relationship between long-term exposure to PM and depressive symptoms. RESULT Significant associations were found between PM1 (OR = 1.21, 95 % CI: 1.12-1.32), PM2.5 (OR = 1.24, 95 % CI: 1.19-1.38), and PM10 (OR = 1.87, 95 % CI: 1.69-2.07) and increased risks of depressive symptoms. Sleep duration and physical activity relieved these associations. The odds ratios (ORs) of PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 on depressive symptoms were lower in group with sufficient sleep (1.02 vs. 1.49, 1.20 vs. 1.80, 2.15 vs. 2.23), lower in group with high level MVPA (1.13 vs. 1.48, 1.14 vs. 1.58, 1.85 vs. 2.38), and lower in group with high level outdoor activity (1.19 vs. 1.55, 1.23 vs. 1.63, 1.83 vs. 2.72). LIMITATIONS Conclusions about causality remain speculative because of the cross-sectional design. CONCLUSION Sufficient sleep duration and outdoor activity may mitigate the decline in mental health among adults in developing countries caused by long-term exposure to PM. This contribution enhanced our understanding of the mechanisms linking air pollution to mental health.

Abstract
Viral infections are increasingly recognized as triggers for depressive disorders, particularly following the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and the rise of long COVID. Viruses such as Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), Cytomegalovirus (CMV), and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) are linked to depression through complex neurobiological mechanisms. These include immune system dysregulation, chronic inflammation, and neurotransmitter imbalances that affect brain function and mood regulation. Viral activation of the immune system leads to the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, resulting in neuroinflammation and associated depressive symptoms. Furthermore, specific viruses can disrupt neurotransmitter systems, including serotonin, dopamine, and glutamate, all of which are essential for mood stabilization. The unique interactions of different viruses with these systems underscore the need for virus-specific therapeutic approaches. Current broad-spectrum treatments often overlook the precise neurobiological pathways involved in post-viral depression, reducing their efficacy. This review emphasizes the need to understand these virus-specific interactions to create tailored interventions that directly address the neurobiological effects induced by each type of virus. These interventions may include immunomodulatory treatments that target persistent inflammation, antiviral therapies to reduce the viral load, or neuroprotective strategies that restore neurotransmitter balance. Precision medicine offers promising avenues for the effective management of virus-induced depression, providing patient-specific approaches that address the specific biological mechanisms involved. By focusing on the development of these targeted treatments, this review aims to pave the way for a new era in psychiatric care that fully addresses the root causes of depression induced by viral infections.

Abstract
Background and Aims Mental and neurological disorders are a growing global concern, further intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic. Stress management techniques, such as deep pressure therapy, have gained attention, with weighted vests commonly used for anxiety relief. However, there is limited scientific evidence supporting their efficacy. This study aimed to rigorously assess the effectiveness of a weighted vest incorporating vibrotactile stimulation in reducing anxiety by measuring physiological indicators-pulse rate and skin conductance (SC)-as well as subjective comfort ratings. Methods A total of 30 final-semester college students participated in the study. Participants wore a vibrotactile-weighted vest, and both pulse rate and skin conductance (SC) were measured to gauge anxiety levels. Additionally, participants rated their comfort using a Comfort Rating Scale (CRS). Changes in pulse rate and SC were statistically analyzed, and effect sizes (Cohen's d) were calculated to assess the magnitude of the intervention's impact. Results The weighted vest with vibrotactile stimulation resulted in a significant reduction in both pulse rate (dpulse = 0.23-0.62) and SC (dsc = 0.32-0.66), indicating a small to medium effect size in anxiety reduction. Subjective evaluations of the vest using the CRS revealed low scores on discomfort-related items, with participants rating unfavorable statements between 1.5/10 and 4.6/10, suggesting overall comfort during use. Conclusion This study provides compelling evidence that vibrotactile-weighted vests effectively reduce anxiety, as indicated by both physiological measures and subjective comfort ratings. The findings support the potential of this intervention as a formal therapeutic tool for stress and anxiety reduction. Further research may explore long-term effects and broader applications in clinical settings.

Abstract
PURPOSE Considerable empirical evidence indicates that stressful life experiences may have a negative impact on mental health. However, it is unclear how multiple adverse experiences may intersect to influence symptoms of depression and anxiety. Using a syndemics approach to identify potential synergistic effects between major stressors, we aimed to quantify the roles of multiple recent adverse life experiences on depression and anxiety symptoms. METHODS A population-representative sample of 1090 Australian adults (53% women, Mage 47 years) completed a cross-sectional survey in 2022 that assessed mental health and retrospective reports of nine specific stressful life experiences in the past year. RESULTS The most common adverse life experiences in the past year were financial problems (64%), loneliness (63%), or a major health problem (51%). In multivariate logistic regression analyses, financial problems, personal health problems, health problems in a close contact, relationship problems and loneliness were significantly associated with both depression and anxiety symptoms (p < 0.05). There was just one synergistic interaction and one buffering interaction of combined adversities on anxiety, and no synergistic interactions of adverse experiences on depression. The perceived impact of combined adversities was associated with both depression (b = 0.59, p < 0.001) and anxiety (b = 0.48, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Adversity was strongly associated with depression and anxiety. Inconsistent with a syndemics framework, there were very few synergistic relationships between different types of adversities, suggesting that different adverse experiences may independently influence mental health. The findings indicate important opportunities for early intervention to prevent depression and anxiety during difficult times.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the most frequently prescribed agents to treat depression. Considering the growth in antidepressant prescription rates, SSRI-induced adverse events (AEs) need to be comprehensively clarified. OBJECTIVE This study was to investigate safety profiles and potential AEs associated with SSRIs using the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS). METHODS A retrospective pharmacovigilance analysis was conducted using the FAERS database, with Open Vigil 2.1 used for data extraction. The study included cases from the marketing date of each SSRI (ie, citalopram, escitalopram, fluoxetine, paroxetine, fluvoxamine, and sertraline) to April 30, 2023. We employed the reporting odds ratio and Bayesian confidence propagation neural network as analytical tools to assess the association between SSRIs and AEs. The Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities was used to standardize the definition of AEs. AE classification was achieved using system organ classes (SOCs). RESULTS Overall, 427 655 AE reports were identified for the 6 SSRIs, primarily associated with 25 SOCs, including psychiatric, nervous system, congenital, familial, genetic, cardiac, and reproductive disorders. Notably, sertraline (n = 967) and fluvoxamine (n = 169) exhibited the highest and lowest signal frequencies, respectively. All SSRIs had relatively strong signals related to congenital, psychiatric, and nervous disorders. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Most of our findings are consistent with those reported previously, but some AEs were not previously identified. However, AEs attributed to SSRIs remain ambiguous, warranting further validation. Applying data-mining methods to the FAERS database can provide additional insights that can assist in appropriately utilizing SSRIs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The current study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of serum amyloid A protein)SAA(protein as a biomarker in diagnosing 2019 novel coronavirus disease)COVID-19(infection. METHODS The study was conducted on 123 patients with definitive COVID-19 infection referred to Shahid Beheshti and Sina hospitals in Hamedan province, Iran. Five-milliliter blood samples were taken from all included patients and serum was isolated using a centrifuge at 10,000 rpm for 10 min. Laboratory tests were conducted, including c-reactive protein (CRP), Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR), potassium level, sodium blood test, platelets (PLT), complete blood count (CBC), lymphocyte count, and neutrophil count. The SAA enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) Kit was applied to measure the SAA level in serum samples. RESULTS 123 patients included 73 males and 50 females, age ±50. Sixty-six (53.7 %) patients had negative CRP while 80 (65 %) patients had normal ESR. Potassium levels were not normal among 111 (94.9 %) patients. Seventy-seven (63.1 %) patients had normal CBC, while 108 (87.8 %) patients had neutrophils above the normal range. 94 (97.9 %) patients over the age of 50 were positive for SAA. In terms of gender, men were the most frequent patients with SAA. There was a statistically significant relationship between the serum level of SAA and outcomes of patients with COVID-19 (p = 0.0001). 94 % of patients with SAA ≤50 were recovered from COVID-19 infection. The sensitivity rate of SAA compared to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and computed tomography scan (CT scan) tests was 93 % and 99 %, respectively. Moreover, the accuracy of SAA compared to PCR and CT scan tests was 52 % and 96 %, respectively. CONCLUSION Results indicate the SAA is a sensitive, but not specific biomarker in the early detection of COVID-19. The quantitative levels of SAA can be useful in predicting treatment outcomes among patients with COVID-19.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is one of the most debilitating diseases worldwide and has seen a significant increase in diagnoses during the pandemic, demanding more and better therapeutic tools to manage the post-pandemic scenario. OBJECTIVE The aim of this systematic review is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the last 20 years of clinical research on Hypnotherapy (HT) to determine whether this intervention has evidence to support its recommendation for the treatment of MDD. METHODS This review included only randomized clinical trials (RCTs) involving adult populations diagnosed with MDD, regardless of the severity level (mild, moderate, or severe) according to any validated diagnostic criteria, compared to a control group (active treatment or none), with any follow-up duration and free access to the manuscript. The bibliographic survey was conducted across seven distinct databases: MEDLINE (PubMed), Embase, CENTRAL, PsycINFO, Scopus, ScieELO, and Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS). The risk of bias was assessed by two independent investigators using Cochrane's revised tool (RoB 2), and the final judgment was made by consensus. To better analyze the included studies, the certainty of the evidence was evaluated through the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE). RESULTS There is not enough evidence to indicate that hypnosis-based interventions may reduce the severity of depression, which precludes the clinical recommendation of this intervention for patients in the real world, pending the production of better evidence of effectiveness and safety, although no evidence of significant adverse effects was found.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have reported that patients with depression have significant cognitive impairment. The aim of this study is to comprehensively evaluate the impairment of executive functions in patients with depression and whether the cognitive behavior performance of executive function is association with remission of depressive state after clinical treatment. METHODS We used cognitive-behavioral test to evaluate the performance of executive functions of 95 inpatients with depression before hospitalization and conducted two follow-up evaluations of their depression status on the 15th day of hospitalization and approximately 9 months after discharge. RESULTS The performance of executive function except the accuracy of inhibition control in patients with depression were significantly worse than that of healthy controls. Multivariate linear regression analysis found that the reaction time of working memory not only had a significant linear relationship with the baseline depression scores of patients with depression, but also had a significant linear relationship with the reduced depression scores after two follow-up visits. LIMITATIONS We only used cognitive-behavioral data as indicators to evaluate the cognitive performances of participants and only measured three components of executive function. CONCLUSIONS The reaction time of working memory was a stable and effective predictor of symptom relief in patients with depression after clinical treatment. These results provide initial evidence for working memory to predict the clinical prognosis of inpatients with depression prospectively, which could be further leveraged to improve intervention approaches and analyze the heterogeneity of depression.

Abstract
Although the lifetime burden due to mental disorders is increasing, we lack tools for more precise diagnosing and treating prevalent and disabling disorders such as major depressive disorder. We lack strategies for selecting among available treatments or expediting access to new treatment options. This critical review concentrates on functional neuroimaging as a modality of measurement for precision psychiatry, focusing on major depressive and anxiety disorders. We begin by outlining evidence for the use of functional neuroimaging to stratify the heterogeneity of these disorders, based on underlying circuit dysfunction. We then review the current landscape of how functional neuroimaging-derived circuit predictors can predict treatment outcomes and clinical trajectories in depression and anxiety. Future directions for advancing clinically appliable neuroimaging measures are considered. We conclude by considering the opportunities and challenges of translating neuroimaging measures into practice. As an illustration, we highlight one approach for quantifying brain circuit function at an individual level, which could serve as a model for clinical translation.
