Abstract
A 13-year-old Maltese dog with an abdominal mass underwent 18F-FDG PET/computed tomography (CT) for tumor localization and metastatic evaluation. PET/CT scans revealed a gastric mass near the esophagogastric junction and demonstrated mean and maximum standardized uptake values (SUVs) of 4.596 and 6.234, respectively, for the abdominal mass. Subsequent surgery incorporated ICG for NIR fluorescence-guided imaging, aiding in precise tumor localization and margin assessment. The excised mass was identified as a low-grade leiomyosarcoma on histopathology. The dog underwent PET/CT imaging six months postoperatively following the excision of the mass, which confirmed the absence of recurrence or residual lesions during follow-up. NIR fluorescence imaging using ICG demonstrated efficacy in real-time tumor visualization and margin assessment, a technique not previously reported in veterinary literature. The PET/CT findings complemented the diagnosis and provided valuable insights into metastasis. The absence of recurrence or complications in postoperative follow-up underscores the potential of these imaging modalities in enhancing surgical precision and improving prognosis in canine gastric tumors.

Abstract
Gastric carcinoma is generally considered to be a rare disease in dogs, carrying a grave prognosis. However, in the Tervueren and Groenendael varieties of the Belgian Shepherd dog breed, the disease is highly prevalent. While histopathology is the gold standard for diagnosing gastric carcinoma, there is no general consensus on the methods for histological classification in these cases. Biopsies of a group of 61 dogs with confirmed gastric carcinoma (45 Tervueren and 16 Groenendael) were examined and classified according to World Health Organization (WHO) and Laurén classifications. Kaplan-Meier curves were used to compare survival between the different subtypes and simple and multiple linear regression were used to analyse the association between age of onset and breed variant, sex, neuter status, location of the tumour, inflammation score, and Laurén and WHO classifications. Mean age at diagnosis was significantly different in Groenendael (10.1 ± 2.01) and Tervueren dogs (8.5 ± 1.90). The Laurén classification resulted in 29 (48%) diffuse- and 32 (52%) intestinal-type tumours. Applying the WHO classification resulted in 30 (49%) tubular carcinoma growth patterns and 31 (51%) others. Median survival time was significantly reduced for the diffuse type as compared to the intestinal type according to the Laurén classification, with the same median survival time results for tubular compared to non-tubular subtypes according to the WHO classification (median survival time of 61 vs. 182 days, respectively). Using the WHO and Lauren classification on tumour biopsies may help the practising clinician in the prognostication of gastric carcinoma in Tervueren and Groenendael dogs.

Abstract
Pyloric outflow obstructions can be caused by several types of lesions. When a thickened gastric wall and pyloric mass are detected, malignant neoplasia must be differentiated from chronic hypertrophic pyloric gastropathy. CT can characterize gastric tumors. However, based on the authors' review of the literature, there is limited information about the CT findings of pyloric lesions. The purpose of this retrospective case series study was to assess the CT findings of canine pyloric lesions. The following CT parameters were recorded: anatomical area, involved area, lesion shape, growth patterns of wall thickening lesions, enhancement pattern of the lesion in the early and delayed phases, lymphomegaly, and pulmonary metastasis. Seventeen dogs were included in this study and had the following final diagnoses: hyperplasia (five dogs), adenoma (five dogs), adenocarcinoma (three dogs), gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST; two dogs), polyposis (one dog), and pyogenic granuloma (one dog). Hyperplasia, adenoma, and polyposis formed mass lesions that involved the mucosal layer. Lymphomegaly was detected in two Jack Russell terriers with hyperplasia; however, the causes were unknown because we did not perform biopsies. All adenocarcinomas formed wall-thickened lesion that involved the outer layer, with lymphomegaly. All GISTs formed mass lesion that involved the outer layer. The pyogenic granulomas formed symmetric wall-thickened lesion that involved the mucosal and outer layers. CT facilitated the characterization of canine pyloric lesions using contrast enhancement, based on the involved area and lesion shape. However, polyposis may require caution in diagnosis based on CT findings alone.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to describe B-mode and colour Doppler ultrasound (US) features of gastric lymphoma in cats. METHODS Cats with histopathological or cytological confirmation of gastric lymphoma that underwent abdominal US were included in this retrospective study. Clinical signs were recorded and radiographs reviewed when available. Gastric lesions were ultrasonographically evaluated for location, distribution, wall layering, echogenicity and thickness. Colour Doppler assessment was based on vessels, location and direction. RESULTS Forty-five cats were included. All presented with vomiting, 7/45 (15.5%) with haematemesis. Radiographs were available in 27/45 cases, and demonstrated a gastric mass in 19/27 (70.4%) cases. The most common US appearance was transmural wall thickening with absent layering 42/45 (93.3%) and hypoechogenicity 39/45 (86.7%). Median maximum thickness was 2.1 cm. Ulceration or erosion was suspected in 23/45 (51%) cases, two of which perforated. Colour Doppler images were available in 33/45 cases. The most common Doppler finding was transmural vessels coursing perpendicularly to the lumen in 14/33 (42.4%). Abdominal effusion was uncommon (n = 11/45; 24.4%). Regional lymphadenopathy was frequent, observed in 44/54 lymph nodes reviewed on US, and US suspicion of splenic, hepatic and intestinal lymphomatous infiltration was reported in 24/45 (53.3%) cases. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE The most common US appearance of gastric lymphoma was transmural hypoechoic segmental wall thickening with layering loss. Location and distribution were variable. Colour Doppler displayed increased blood supply with a predominant pattern of perpendicular vessels, possibly representing aberrant arteries originating from subserosal and submucosal plexus. Lymphomatous infiltration of lymph nodes and other abdominal organs was frequent, confirming local and distant aggressiveness of gastric lymphoma in cats. Vomiting and haematemesis were frequently associated with the suspicion of ulcer on US. Perforation was a rare occurrence.

Abstract
Radiography and ultrasonography are the most used techniques in veterinary clinical practice, due to organizational, managerial and, mostly, economic reasons. However, in the last decades, Computed tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and, to a lesser extent, Nuclear Medicine (MN) are increasingly used. As we said in the previous article, all the Diagnostic Imaging techniques are actually "indispensable" in Veterinary Medicine, where many patients do not show any symptoms.This second part describes Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance (MRI) and Nuclear Medicine techniques in Veterinary Medicine are described.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to describe the endoscopic appearance of gastroduodenal ulcers (GDUs), and to assess the clinical, ultrasonographic and histological data, as well as long-term follow-up, in cats. METHODS The medical record databases of five veterinary endoscopists were evaluated between January 2016 and 2020, in a retrospective study. Cats with at least one gastric or duodenal ulcer detected by endoscopic examination were included. All the medical records of the selected cats were reviewed and information was collected regarding breed, age, sex, neuter status, medical history, clinical signs, and ultrasonographic, endoscopic and histological findings. The cats were evaluated at 6, 12 and 18 months. RESULTS Sixty-one cats with a median age of 9.0 years (range 2.0-16.0) were included in the study. The most common complaints were vomiting (n = 55; 90%) and hyporexia (n = 40; 66%); haematemesis was reported in 12 (20%) cats. Endoscopy showed GDUs in the following locations: gastric body in 28 cats (46%), antropyloric area in 34 cats (56%), fundus in 13 cats (21%) and duodenum in eight cats (13%). A single GDU was found in 42 cats (69%) and multiple GDUs were seen in 19 cats (31%). Histopathological evaluation revealed benign lesions in 33 (54%) cats and malignant lesions in 28 (46%; 24 high-grade lymphoma, one low-grade lymphoma and three carcinoma). High-grade lymphoma was detected only in the stomach. Cats diagnosed with malignant GDUs (median 10.5, range 4-16) were significantly older than cats with benign lesions (P = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE GDUs are common and were detected in 5.1% of cats undergoing an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. The risk of a malignant ulcer increases proportionally with each year of increasing age. GDU location, number and morphological appearance do not provide any indication of the nature of the ulcer; however, duodenal ulcers are frequently benign. Endoscopic examination facilitates the early and minimally invasive detection of GDUs in cats.

Abstract
Background: Gastrointestinal masses in cats are of clinical relevance, but pathological studies with larger case numbers are lacking. Biomarkers such as miRNA have not yet been investigated in feline intestinal neoplasms. Methods: A retrospective analysis of pathology reports included 860 feline gastrointestinal masses. Immunohistochemistry was performed on 91 lymphomas, 10 sarcomas and 7 mast cell tumours (MCT). Analyses of miRNA-20b and miRNA-192 were performed on 11 lymphomas, 5 carcinomas and 5 control tissues by ddPCR. Results: The pathological diagnosis identified 679 lymphomas, 122 carcinomas, 28 sarcomas, 23 polyps, 7 MCT and 1 leiomyoma. Carcinomas and polyps were most commonly found in the large intestine, lymphomas were most commonly found in the stomach and small intestine and MCT only occurred in the small intestine. Besides the well-described small-cell, mitotic count <2 T-cell lymphomas and the large-cell B-cell lymphomas with a high mitotic count, several variants of lymphomas were identified. The values of miRNA-20b were found to be up-regulated in samples of all types of cancer, whereas miRNA-192 was only up-regulated in carcinomas and B-cell lymphomas. Conclusions: The histopathological and immunohistochemical (sub-)classification of feline intestinal masses confirmed the occurrence of different tumour types, with lymphoma being the most frequent neoplasm. Novel biomarkers such as miRNA-20b and miRNA-192 might have diagnostic potential in feline intestinal neoplasms and should be further investigated.

Abstract
Simple Summary Human gastric cancer is a prevalent cancer worldwide with a high mortality rate. Although sharing many other features, the incidence of gastric cancer is lower in dogs than in humans. Surgery is the first-line treatment; however, it is associated with several complications. Nevertheless, chemotherapy to treat canine gastric cancer has not received much attention, probably due to its late diagnosis, fast progression, low median survival time, and very high mortality rate, along with the lack of publications with concrete scientific results. In this review, we explore the pharmacological approach used in treatment of this often-fatal disease. Abstract Human gastric cancer (GC) ranks as the fifth most prevalent cancer worldwide, and is the third leading cause of cancer-related death. The incidence of GC is lower in dogs than in humans, accounting for less than 1% of all canine malignancies. In recent years, efforts have been made to understand the pathogenesis of GC and in find an appropriate therapy to maximize curative results, such as adjuvant chemotherapy treatments in addition to surgery. Although surgery is the first-line treatment, it is associated with several complications. In terms of chemotherapeutic intervention, canine gastric cancer has not received much attention, probably due to its late diagnosis, fast progression, low median survival time, and very high mortality rate, along with the lack of publications with concrete scientific results. In this review, we explore canine GC and the pharmacological approach used in the treatment of this often-fatal disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Abdominal ultrasound is frequently used to detect non-perforated gastroduodenal ulcers in dogs. Studies assessing the diagnostic utility of abdominal ultrasound for the detection of non-perforated gastroduodenal ulcers have yielded mixed results. No studies to date have investigated the effects of patient bodyweight, breed, sex, age, ulcer aetiology (neoplastic or inflammatory) or location on the diagnostic accuracy of abdominal ultrasound. METHODS Retrospective, multicentre study to evaluate the diagnostic utility of abdominal ultrasonography for the diagnosis of non-perforated gastroduodenal ulceration in dogs. RESULTS Sixty-one dogs met the inclusion criteria. Ulcers were detected during ultrasound examination in 18 of 61 dogs, yielding a sensitivity of 29.5% (95% confidence interval 18.8%-42.7%). Ulcers in the pyloric region were detected more frequently than those in the duodenum; however, location was not significantly associated with the ability of ultrasound to detect lesions (p = 0.41). No associations were identified between the ability of ultrasound to detect an ulcer and patient bodyweight (p = 0.45), breed (p = 0.98), sex (p = 0.90), age (p = 0.94), and neoplastic versus inflammatory nature of ulcerative lesions (p = 0.93). CONCLUSION The diagnostic utility of ultrasound as the sole modality for the detection of non-perforated gastroduodenal mucosal ulceration is poor. The authors therefore recommend the use of additional modalities when ulcerative lesions are suspected.

Simple Summary Canine gastric disorders are common in veterinary clinical practice and among these neoplasms require rapid identification and characterization. Standard ultrasonography is the imaging modality of choice for gastric wall assessment. The aim of this prospective study is to describe the specific B-mode and contrast enhanced ultrasound features of normal, inflammatory, and neoplastic gastric diseases in dogs. Standard and contrast enhanced ultrasound of the stomach were performed in anesthetized dogs with or without gastric disorders. Gastric wall qualitative and quantitative parameters were evaluated. A total of 41 dogs were included: 6 healthy as the control group; 9 gastritis; 8 adenocarcinoma; 8 alimentary lymphoma; 4 leiomyosarcoma; 2 gastrointestinal stromal tumor; 2 leiomyoma; 1 undifferentiated sarcoma; 1 metastatic gastric hemangiosarcoma. Gastric tumors appear as a marked thickening with absent layers definition and possible regional lymphadenopathy and steatitis while gastritis generally shows no/mild thickening and no other alterations on standard ultrasound. During contrast—enhanced ultrasonography, neoplasms show a higher and faster wash in if compared to that of gastritis. B-mode and contrast enhanced ultrasound assessment may be useful in the evaluation of canine gastric disorders for the distinction between gastritis and gastric neoplasms, even if there are no specific aspects able to discriminate between different tumors types. Abstract
There has been an increase in the number of Jack Russell Terriers (JRTs) diagnosed with
adenomas and adenocarcinomas of the gastrointestinal tract in Japan. This study
retrospectively investigated the clinical and histopathological features and prognosis of
adenocarcinomas arising in the gastrointestinal tract in JRT dogs. Seven JRTs and 39 dogs
of other breeds diagnosed with gastrointestinal adenocarcinoma were included in the study.
The most common sites of gastrointestinal adenocarcinoma in JRTs were the pylorus and
rectum. On histopathological examination, these adenocarcinomas showed a papillary or
tubular growth pattern, and the lesions were confined within the mucosal epithelium and
poorly invasive. Among all dogs with gastric adenocarcinoma, the median survival time
(MST) for five of the JRTs could not be determined because more than half of the cases
remained alive, while the MST for nine non-JRT dogs was 34 days. Among all dogs with
adenocarcinoma in the large intestine, the MST for three of the JRTs could not be
determined, while the MST for nine non-JRT dogs was 1,973 days. The difference in MST
between JRT and non-JRT dogs with gastric adenocarcinoma was significant
(P=0.0220). Since gastrointestinal adenocarcinomas in JRTs show
distinct characteristics with respect to their clinical features, treatment course, and
prognosis, a different surgical and medical treatment plan should be considered compared
to the management of gastrointestinal adenocarcinomas in other dog breeds.

Abstract
Simple Summary Alimentary lymphoma is the most common neoplasm of the feline gastrointestinal tract. In most cases, standard ultrasonography may not be able to discriminate between a neoplastic and inflammatory infiltrate at this level. The aim of this prospective study is to establish the value of conventional ultrasound and contrast enhanced ultrasonography in describing specific features of normal, inflammatory, and neoplastic gastric diseases in feline species. A total of 29 cats were included in the study: six healthy cats as the control group; nine with gastric inflammation; three with low-grade alimentary lymphoma; 10 with high grade alimentary lymphoma. High-grade lymphoma usually appears as a severe wall thickening with absent layer definition, regional lymphadenopathy and local steatitis on a conventional ultrasound and shows a high-contrast uptake and a homogeneous enhancement with comb teeth-like vessels on contrast-enhanced ultrasound, while gastric inflammation and low-grade alimentary lymphoma showed a large overlap on both of those two ultrasonographic techniques. Diagnostic accuracy and cut-off value were calculated and found to be relevant for thickness (3.8 mm) for inflammation vs. low-grade lymphoma and “benign” vs. “malignant” as well as peak enhancement (34.87 dB) for “benign” vs. “malignant”. Thickness and peak enhancement can be useful parameters in the characterization of gastric infiltrates in cats. Abstract Alimentary lymphoma (AL) is the most common malignancy of the feline gastrointestinal tract and may cause variable mild to severe alteration of the gastric wall on ultrasonography (US) that can be very similar to those caused by inflammation (INF). The aim of this prospective study is to establish the value of B-mode and contrast-enhanced US (CEUS) in describing specific features of normal, inflammatory, and neoplastic gastric diseases in feline species. B-mode US and CEUS of the stomach were performed in anesthetized cats with or without gastric disorders. Gastric wall qualitative and quantitative parameters were evaluated on B-mode US and CEUS examination. A total of 29 cats were included: six healthy (HEA) cats as the control group; nine INF; three low-grade lymphoma (LGAL); 10 high-grade lymphoma (HGAL). On B-mode US, there were significant differences in thickness, the wall’s layer definition and echogenicity between HGAL and all the other groups (<0.001). For CEUS, statistical differences between groups were found in the following: HGAL vs. HEA, HGAL vs. INF; HGAL vs. LGAL; INF vs. HEA. Diagnostic accuracy (AUC) and cut-off value were calculated and found to be significant for thickness (3.8 mm) for INF vs. LGAL (AUC > 0.70) and “benign” vs. “malignant” (AUC > 0.90) as well as peak enhancement (34.87 dB) for “benign” vs. “malignant” (AUC > 0.70). INF and LGAL showed an overlap of qualitative and quantitative parameters both on B-mode and CEUS, while HGAL usually appears as a severe wall thickening with absent layer definition, high-contrast uptake, a specific enhancement pattern, regional lymphadenopathy and local steatitis. Thickness and peak enhancement can be useful parameters in the characterization of gastric infiltrates in cats.

Abstract
Intravascular lymphoma (IVL) is a rare, high-grade, extranodal lymphoma characterized by selective proliferation of neoplastic lymphocytes within the lumen of small vessels. A 10 yr old female intact mixed-breed dog was presented with a 7 mo history of vomiting and anorexia. Physical examination revealed abdominal discomfort. Ultrasonography and endoscopy identified a submucosal gastric mass. Excision was performed by partial gastrectomy and histopathology and immunohistochemistry confirmed a T-cell IVL. The owner declined chemotherapy, and the dog was instead treated palliatively with prednisolone. Two months after surgery, vomiting recurred and abdominal ultrasonography revealed a large gastric ulcer with focal peritonitis. The dog was euthanized 4 mo after initial presentation and postmortem examination confirmed IVL recurrence in the stomach and an isolated nodule of neoplastic cells in the omentum. No involvement of other organs was found following histopathological examination. This is the first description of primary gastric intravascular lymphoma causing chronic vomiting in a dog.

Abstract
PRACTICAL RELEVANCE Abdominal ultrasound plays a vital role in the diagnostic work-up of many cats presenting to general and specialist practitioners. B-mode ultrasonography is likely the most widely used modality for imaging the gastrointestinal (GI) tract in cats and it can help in the diagnosis of GI masses, foreign bodies and disorders of the ileocaecocolic junction. CLINICAL CHALLENGES Despite ultrasonography being a commonly used modality, many practitioners are not comfortable performing an ultrasound examination or interpreting the resulting images. Even differentiating between normal variations and pathological changes can be challenging for all but the most experienced. For example, while for inflammatory conditions of the feline GI tract changes are frequently identified on ultrasound, there may occasionally be no changes to the appearance of the intestine; hence a 'normal' ultrasound does not exclude the possibility of inflammatory disease. AIM This review, part of an occasional series on feline abdominal ultrasonography, describes the appearance of a range of conditions that affect the feline GI tract; the normal GI tract is addressed in an accompanying article in this issue of JFMS. Aimed at general practitioners who wish to improve their knowledge and confidence in feline abdominal ultrasound, this review is accompanied by high-resolution images and videos available online as supplementary material. EQUIPMENT Ultrasound facilities are readily available to most practitioners, although use of ultrasonography as a diagnostic tool is highly dependent on operator experience. EVIDENCE BASE Information provided in this article is drawn from the published literature and the author's own clinical experience.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the clinical characteristics, perioperative complications, and outcomes in dogs surgically treated for gastric carcinoma. STUDY DESIGN Multi-institutional retrospective case series. ANIMALS Forty client-owned dogs with histologically confirmed gastric carcinoma. METHODS Medical records were reviewed for preoperative diagnostics, surgery, histopathology, postoperative complications, adjuvant chemotherapy, disease progression, and survival. Variables were assessed for associations with outcome by using Cox proportional hazards regression analysis. RESULTS Surgical treatment included partial gastrectomy (28 dogs), Billroth I (9 dogs), subtotal gastrectomy (2 dogs), and submucosal resection (1 dog). Major postoperative complications occurred in 8 of 40 dogs, including septic peritonitis secondary to dehiscence in 4 dogs. The median progression free interval was 54 days, and the median survival time (MST) was 178 days (range, 1-1902). According to multivariable analysis results, experiencing an intraoperative complication was associated with an increased risk of death (hazard ratio [HR] 3.5, 95% CI 1.1-9.8, P = .005), and administration of adjuvant chemotherapy correlated with an improved survival (HR 0.4, 95% CI 0.2-0.9, P = .03). CONCLUSION In this population of dogs, MST exceeded historically reported data, major postoperative complication rates were comparable to established literature, and administration of adjuvant chemotherapy was associated with improved survival. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Results from this study may be used to counsel owners more accurately regarding prognosis for dogs undergoing surgical excision for gastric carcinoma.

Abstract
Objectives The aim of the study was to report the ultrasonographic and clinicopathological findings in cats with confirmed pyloroduodenal adenomatous polyps. Methods Clinicopathological data, ultrasonographic and histopathological findings were collected retrospectively from medical records. Results Pyloroduodenal polyps appeared as small moderately echogenic and homogeneous nodules filling most of the proximal duodenal or pyloroduodenal lumen. The most common presenting signs in this study included acute vomiting and anorexia in 4/6 cats and lethargy in 3/6 cats. Two cats presented with severe anemia, suggestive of active bleeding. One cat presented with increased bilirubin without anemia, suggestive of impaired bile flow. Five cats survived surgical removal of the polyp and were free of clinical signs 817 days after the procedure. Conclusions and relevance Pyloroduodenal polyps have subtle ultrasonographic changes that can easily be mistaken for ingesta. They are characterized by a discrete small (up to 1.5 cm in diameter) homogeneous echogenic nodule filling the pyloroduodenal lumen. Pyloroduodenal polyps are benign lesions but can cause severe clinical signs including gastrointestinal bleeding or biliary obstruction. The prognosis is excellent with surgical removal.

Abstract
CASE DESCRIPTION A 4-year-old sexually intact male pet guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) was evaluated for a routine wellness examination. CLINICAL FINDINGS During physical examination, a small mass was palpated in the cranial aspect of the abdomen. Abdominal radiographic and ultrasonographic findings were suggestive of a gastric mass. Cytologic evaluation of a fine-needle aspirate of the mass was indicative of spindle cell proliferation most consistent with a sarcoma. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME The patient was anesthetized, and an exploratory laparotomy and partial gastrectomy were performed to resect the gastric mass. Histologic and immunohistochemical examinations of the mass revealed that it was a gastric leiomyoma. The patient recovered from surgery without complications. No evidence of mass recurrence was observed during an abdominal ultrasonographic examination performed approximately 19 months after surgery. CLINICAL RELEVANCE To our knowledge, this was the first report of the clinical diagnosis and successful surgical treatment of a gastric neoplasm in a guinea pig. Gastric leiomyomas are not uncommon in guinea pigs, and although benign, they can cause clinical signs if they become large enough to impair gastric function. Gastrointestinal surgery should be considered as a treatment option for guinea pigs with similar gastric neoplasms.

Abstract
RESUMO Tumores gástricos em animais domésticos são raros, e a literatura pertinente é escassa. Em humanos, esse tumor representa 80% dos tumores mesenquimais do trato digestivo, sendo mais comum no estômago (70%). Indivíduos de meia-idade e idosos, principalmente do gênero masculino, são os mais afetados, e o diagnosticado é feito com base em suas manifestações clínicas associadas à morfologia celular típica e à imuno-histoquímica positiva. O presente trabalho objetiva descrever um sarcoma gástrico em cão, assim como o diagnóstico, o tratamento cirúrgico e o pós-cirúrgico do animal. Foi atendido no Hospital Veterinário da Universidade Metropolitana de Santos (Unimes) um cão macho, SRD, 10 anos, 8,3kg, castrado, com bom estado geral, com queixa de emese há um ano. Na ultrassonografia abdominal foi observada a presença de uma formação arredondada no estômago que media 3,20 x 2,61cm, localizada na região epigástrica em contiguidade com a parede. O cão foi submetido a endoscopia gástrica, em que se observou a presença de uma massa arredondada na região pilórica, confirmada na laparotomia e na gastrotomia. O tumor retirado foi enviado para avaliação anatomopatológica, e os achados foram compatíveis com sarcoma estromal gástrico.

Abstract
Gastric carcinoma (GC) is the most common neoplasm in the stomach of dogs. Although incidence in the general population is reported to be low, breed-specific GC has a high incidence. Median age at presentation ranges from 8 to approximately 10 years. The disease is mostly located in the lesser curvature and antropyloric region of the stomach. Unfortunately, diagnosis is usually made when the disease is at an advanced stage and, therefore, prognosis is poor. Due to similarities in clinical presentation, diagnosis, histology and prognosis, canine GC may serve as a valuable model for human GC. Extensive pedigrees of canine gastric carcinoma cases could reveal insights for human gastric carcinoma. Putative species differences include the role of Helicobacter in pathogenesis, the wide array of genetic data and screening available for humans, and treatment protocols that are available for human GC.

Abstract
A 22-year-old captive male South American sea lion (Otaria flavescens) developed an undifferentiated carcinoma originating in the cardiac region of the stomach. Clinical symptoms included vomiting, anorexia and weight loss. Ultrasonography and endoscopy showed gastric wall thickness. At necropsy, the gastric wall had significant thickening around the cardiac region, and metastases were found in some organs. Histologically, samples from the stomach wall and metastases showed the same tumor tissue. Immunohistochemistry was positive for epithelium markers. Ductal growth, keratinocytes or signet ring cells were absent. The tumor was classified as an undifferentiated carcinoma using the World Health Organization's (WHO) guide to international classification of tumors in domestic animals. This is the first report of a primary gastric carcinoma in a pinniped.

Abstract
Gastric disorders are common in dogs and are a major reason for veterinary consultation. In human medicine, the classification of gastric diseases based on histological features, genotypes and molecular phenotypes helps to better understand the characteristics of each subtype, and to improve early diagnosis, prevention and treatment. Canine gastric lesions often show strong histological similarities to their human counterparts. However, such conditions in the canine stomach are poorly studied and their cellular and molecular features are largely unknown. This article reviews the histopathological classification of inflammatory and neoplastic lesions of the canine stomach and provides an update on the application of molecular techniques within the field of canine gastric pathology. The canine disorders are compared with current knowledge of the equivalent human diseases.

Abstract
A 9-year-old castrated male Shih Tzu dog was referred to us, because of chronic
vomiting. The patient’s hematological, radiographic, ultrasonographic, endoscopic and
histological examinations were evaluated for diagnosis. Hematologic analysis indicated
moderate anemia and azotemia. Based on the imaging studies, an oval-shaped mass was
identified in the gastric pylorus area. A proliferative mass was found on endoscopic
examination, and we performed biopsy using grasping forceps. The histopathological
findings of the biopsy specimens indicated hypertrophic gastritis, and Y-U pyloroplasty
was performed. However, histopathological examination of the surgically resected mass
revealed tubular adenocarcinoma of the stomach. Then, carboplatin chemotherapy was
performed 4 times for 13 weeks. Clinical signs, such as vomiting, were resolved gradually
after surgery and chemotherapy, and the patient’s condition was managed favorably until
recently (30 months after surgery). This case report describes clinical features, imaging
studies, endoscopic characteristics and histopathological and immunohistochemical features
of gastric tubular adenocarcinoma as early gastric cancer in a dog.

Abstract
Vomiting is a common presenting complaint in feline practice. This article differs from previous reviews in that it is an evidence-based review of the mechanisms, causes, investigation and management of vomiting in the domestic cat. Published evidence was reviewed, and then used to make recommendations for clinical assessment, diagnosis, antiemetic drug treatment, dietary management and monitoring of cats presenting with vomiting. The strength of the evidence on which recommendations are made (and areas where evidence is lacking for cats) has been highlighted throughout.

Abstract
Immunohistochemical staining for cell cycle proteins and heat shock proteins was performed on 17 canine gastric carcinomas. The immunoexpression of p53, p21, p16, Hsp27, and Hsp70 was investigated. A study was conducted to determine the histological type and parameters related to tumor malignancy. Possible associations and trends were assessed between the immunoexpression of each protein and tumor type as well as specific parameters of malignancy. High intratumor frequency of cellular p53 immunostaining was observed (61.96% average), but lower frequencies of p21 and p16 expression were present (34.65% and 10.41%, respectively). The p53 overexpression was associated with tumor infiltration (P = .0258). Expression of p21 was lower in undifferentiated carcinomas, and the loss of expression was associated with histopathological parameters characteristic of a poor prognosis such as lymphatic vessel invasion (P = .0258). The lack of p16 immunoreactivity was related to histopathological characteristics of malignancy such as the presence of evident and multiple nucleoli (P = .0475). In contrast, deep tumor infiltration was observed in those carcinomas with a high p16 index (P = .0475). Hsp70 appeared to be overexpressed in all gastric neoplasms included in this study. This is in contrast to Hsp27, because a group of tumors showed complete lack of Hsp27 immunoexpression, whereas the others displayed extensive Hsp27 immunostaining. The differences in Hsp27 did not correlate with any of the histopathological parameters, but Hsp27 immunoexpression was higher in the undifferentiated carcinoma. No significant differences in the expression of the proteins were found in canine gastric carcinomas according to their histological type. These findings may be useful for establishing a prognosis for canine gastric carcinoma.

Abstract
Emesis is a common presenting sign in small animal practice. It requires a rational approach to management that is based upon a sound understanding of pathophysiology combined with logical decision making. This review, which assesses the weight of available evidence, outlines the physiology of the vomiting reflex, causes of emesis, the consequences of emesis and the approach to clinical management of the vomiting dog. The applicability of diagnostic testing modalities and the merit of traditional approaches to management, such as dietary changes, are discussed. The role and usefulness of both traditional and novel anti-emetic drugs is examined, including in specific circumstances such as following cytotoxic drug treatment. The review also examines areas in which common clinical practice is not necessarily supported by objective evidence and, as such, highlights questions worthy of further clinical research.

Abstract
Benign gastric polyps are uncommon in dogs and most are discovered incidentally. Polyps protruding into the pyloric antrum can cause gastric outflow obstruction. Clinical and ultrasonographic findings in seven dogs with histologically confirmed benign mucosal gastric polyps were reviewed. Sonographic findings such as shape, size, echogenicity, location, evidence of gastric wall thickening, wall layering, and size of regional lymph nodes were recorded. Five sessile and two pedunculated masses of different sizes (range 7-60 mm) and echogenicities were found. They primarily arose from the mucosal layer and protruded into the gastric lumen. Only one dog had a large inhomogeneous mass with a poorly visualized gastric wall layering. The polyps were all single, and were located in the pyloric antrum in six out of seven dogs. Although the ultrasonographic appearance allowed a presumptive diagnosis of mucosal gastric polyp, the final diagnosis was determined from histopathologic examination.

Abstract
Gastritis--inflammation of the stomach--is a frequently cited differential yet rarely characterized diagnosis in cases of canine anorexia and vomiting. Although the list of rule-outs for acute or chronic gastritis is extensive, a review of the veterinary literature reveals fewer than 15 articles that have focused on clinical cases of canine gastritis over the last 25 years. The dog frequently appears in the human literature as an experimentally manipulated model for the study of endoscopic techniques or the effect of medications on gastric mucosa. In the veterinary patient, cases of acute gastritis are rarely pursued with the complete diagnostic armamentarium, and cases of chronic gastritis are rarely found to occur as an entity isolated from the rest of the gastrointestinal tract. This article focuses on those findings most clinically relevant to cases of canine gastritis in veterinary medicine.

Abstract
An 8-year-old male Rottweiler was presented for recurrent episodes of dysphagia and vomiting with chronic weight loss. Radiography revealed a mediastinal mass in the heart base region. Necropsy revealed a firm, white mediastinal mass extending along the distal esophagus, through the diaphragm, to the gastric cardia, leftward to the convex visceral aspect of the fundus, and rightward along the lesser curvature of the stomach to the pyloric antrum. The gastric lymph node was enlarged and the omentum contained several nodules. Histologically, deep fundic mucosa contained pleomorphic, vacuolated cells with intracytoplasmic mucin, which was hyaluronidase resistant. Neoplastic cells were cytokeratin positive and vimentin negative. Transmural invasion was evidenced by the presence of cytokeratin-positive cells between smooth muscle bundles of the gastric wall. The mediastinal mass was composed of clusters of neoplastic cells in a stroma of dense and loose connective tissue. Neoplastic cells were also within blood and lymphatic vessels, tracheobronchial and gastric lymph nodes, and around peripheral nerves. This carcinoma most likely arose from the gastric fundus and extended to the cardia, from where it advanced proximally to the mediastinum as well as further rightward along the lesser curvature, demonstrating an anatomic continuity suggestive of a direct invasion. Metastasis, evidenced by the presence of lymphatic, blood, and perineural tumor emboli, also occurred.

Abstract
Gastric neoplasia accounts for less than 1% of all canine malignancies. Malignant epithelial tumours are the most common gastric neoplasm in dogs and are referred to as carcinoma or adenocarcinoma. Dogs with gastric carcinoma usually present with vomiting, anorexia, and weight loss. The duration of clinical signs is from weeks to months. 1 Survey and contrast radiography, endoscopy, and ultrasonography have been used in the diagnosis of gastric carcinoma in dogs. This report describes a case of gastric carcinoma in which the survey and contrast radiographs and endoscopic findings were normal. Gastric neoplasia was suspected on ultrasound examination and confirmed histologically.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate aberrations of the p53 tumor suppressor gene in naturally developing tumors in dogs. SAMPLE POPULATION Tumor specimens from 15 dogs with various tumors, including malignant lymphoma (7 dogs), monocytic leukemia (1), mammary gland adenoma (1), mammary gland benign mixed tumor (1), rhabdomyosarcoma (1), colon cancer (1), and osteosarcoma (3). PROCEDURE Aberrations of the p53 gene in these tumor tissues were examined by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and single-strand conformation polymorphism analysis, using 3 fragments that covered the entire open reading frame of the canine p53 gene, followed by nucleotide sequencing of the abnormal bands. RESULTS Point mutations, deletions, and insertions resulting in a number of amino acid substitutions of wild-type p53 were detected in 7 of the 15 tumor specimens from dogs with malignant lymphoma, monocytic leukemia, rhabdomyosarcoma, colon cancer, and osteosarcoma. Of these 7 dogs, 2 had aberrations of the p53 gene on both alleles, whereas 5 had aberrations of the p53 gene on 1 allele and concurrently lacked the wild-type p53 transcript. Many of the aberrations of the p53 gene detected in these tumors were located in the transactivation, DNA binding, and oligomerization domains. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Various naturally developing tumors in dogs often have inactivation of the p53 tumor suppressor gene, which may be 1 of the multiple step-wise genetic changes during tumorigenesis. This study indicates that p53 gene can be a target for gene therapy for tumors in dogs.

Abstract
Galectin-3 was detected immunohistochemically in nine canine gastric carcinomas. In normal gastric tissue adjacent to the neoplasms, the gastric epithelial cells showed faint immunolabelling for galectin-3, but in all the tumours the neoplastic cells showed moderate to strong immunolabelling. Galectin-3 was localized in the cytoplasm of the normal mucosal cells, whereas it was found in both the cytoplasm and the nucleus of the neoplastic cells. Positive cells typically exhibited dark brown coloration of the nucleus or cytoplasm, without background labelling. The results suggest that galactin-3 has a pathophysiological role in canine gastric carcinoma.
