Cortical Generators and Connections Underlying Phoneme Perception: A Mismatch Negativity and P300 Investigation

The cortical generators of the pure tone MMN and P300 have been thoroughly studied. Their nature and interaction with respect to phoneme perception, however, is poorly understood. Accordingly, the cortical sources and functional connections that underlie the MMN and P300 in relation to passive and active speech sound perception were identified. An inattentive and attentive phonemic oddball paradigm, eliciting a MMN and P300 respectively, were administered in 60 healthy adults during simultaneous high-density EEG recording. For both the MMN and P300, eLORETA source reconstruction was performed. The maximal cross-correlation was calculated between ROI-pairs to investigate inter-regional functional connectivity specific to passive and active deviant processing. MMN activation clusters were identified in the temporal (insula, superior temporal gyrus and temporal pole), frontal (rostral middle frontal and pars opercularis) and parietal (postcentral and supramarginal gyrus) cortex. Passive discrimination of deviant phonemes was aided by a network connecting right temporoparietal cortices to left frontal areas. For the P300, clusters with significantly higher activity were found in the frontal (caudal middle frontal and precentral), parietal (precuneus) and cingulate (posterior and isthmus) cortex. Significant intra- and interhemispheric connections between parietal, cingulate and occipital regions constituted the network governing active phonemic target detection. A predominantly bilateral network was found to underly both the MMN and P300. While passive phoneme discrimination is aided by a fronto-temporo-parietal network, active categorization calls on a network entailing fronto-parieto-cingulate cortices. Neural processing of phonemic contrasts, as reflected by the MMN and P300, does not appear to show pronounced lateralization to the language-dominant hemisphere.

XDL-ESI: Electrophysiological Sources Imaging via explainable deep learning framework with validation on simultaneous EEG and iEEG

Electroencephalography (EEG) or Magnetoencephalography (MEG) source imaging aims to estimate the underlying activated brain sources to explain the observed EEG/MEG recordings. Solving the inverse problem of EEG/MEG Source Imaging (ESI) is challenging due to its ill-posed nature. To achieve a unique solution, it is essential to apply sophisticated regularization constraints to restrict the solution space. Traditionally, the design of regularization terms is based on assumptions about the spatiotemporal structure of the underlying source dynamics. In this paper, we propose a novel paradigm for ESI via an Explainable Deep Learning framework, termed as XDL-ESI, which connects the iterative optimization algorithm with deep learning architecture by unfolding the iterative updates with neural network modules. The proposed framework has the advantages of (1) establishing a data-driven approach to model the source solution structure instead of using hand-crafted regularization terms; (2) improving the robustness of source solutions by introducing a topological loss that leverages the geometric spatial information applying varying penalties on distinct localization errors; (3) improving the reconstruction efficiency and interpretability as it inherits the advantages from both the iterative optimization algorithms (interpretability) and deep learning approaches (function approximation). The proposed XDL-ESI framework provides an efficient, accurate, and interpretable paradigm to solve the ESI inverse problem with satisfactory performance in both simulated data and real clinical data. Specially, this approach is further validated using simultaneous EEG and intracranial EEG (iEEG).

EEG dynamic source imaging using a regularized optimization with spatio-temporal constraints

One of the most important needs in neuroimaging is brain dynamic source imaging with high spatial and temporal resolution. EEG source imaging estimates the underlying sources from EEG recordings, which provides enhanced spatial resolution with intrinsically high temporal resolution. To ensure identifiability in the underdetermined source reconstruction problem, constraints on EEG sources are essential. This paper introduces a novel method for estimating source activities based on spatio-temporal constraints and a dynamic source imaging algorithm. The method enhances time resolution by incorporating temporal evolution of neural activity into a regularization function. Additionally, two spatial regularization constraints based on L 1 and L 2 norms are applied in the transformed domain to address both focal and spread neural activities, achieved through spatial gradient and Laplacian transform. Performance evaluation, conducted quantitatively using synthetic datasets, discusses the influence of parameters such as source extent, number of sources, correlation level, and SNR level on temporal and spatial metrics. Results demonstrate that the proposed method provides superior spatial and temporal reconstructions compared to state-of-the-art inverse solutions including STRAPS, sLORETA, SBL, dSPM, and MxNE. This improvement is attributed to the simultaneous integration of transformed spatial and temporal constraints. When applied to a real auditory ERP dataset, our algorithm accurately reconstructs brain source time series and locations, effectively identifying the origins of auditory evoked potentials. In conclusion, our proposed method with spatio-temporal constraints outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithms in estimating source distribution and time courses.

The role of personality in social interaction perception: an ERP and source imaging study

Agreeableness, one of the five personality traits, is associated with socio-cognitive abilities. This study investigates how agreeableness impacts the perception of social interactions, while considering sex that might moderate this effect. Sixty-two young adults, preselected to ensure a wide range of agreeableness scores, underwent EEG recording while viewing images depicting real-world scenes of two people either engaged in a social interaction or acting independently. Behavioral results suggested a trend where higher agreeableness scores predicted better ability to detect social interactions primarily in males. ERP analysis showed that individuals with higher agreeableness exhibited stronger neural differentiation between social and non-social stimuli, observed in both females and males, and in the whole sample. This neural differentiation, occurring early in the processing timeline, was particularly extensive in males, and predictive of their performance. Three independent source analyses, conducted for the whole sample and for each sex, identified the engagement of right fronto-parietal regions for the ERP-agreeableness association. These findings enhance our understanding of how agreeableness shapes the neural mechanisms underlying social interaction detection and emphasize sex as an important factor in this dynamic. They also highlight the need for tailored approaches that consider personality traits and sex in clinical interventions targeting social impairments.

Localized estimation of event-related neural source activity from simultaneous MEG-EEG with a recurrent neural network

Estimating intracranial current sources underlying the electromagnetic signals observed from extracranial sensors is a perennial challenge in non-invasive neuroimaging. Established solutions to this inverse problem treat time samples independently without considering the temporal dynamics of event-related brain processes. This paper describes current source estimation from simultaneously recorded magneto- and electro-encephalography (MEEG) using a recurrent neural network (RNN) that learns sequential relationships from neural data. The RNN was trained in two phases: (1) pre-training and (2) transfer learning with L1 regularization applied to the source estimation layer. Performance of using scaled labels derived from MEEG, magnetoencephalography (MEG), or electroencephalography (EEG) were compared, as were results from volumetric source space with free dipole orientation and surface source space with fixed dipole orientation. Exact low-resolution electromagnetic tomography (eLORETA) and mixed-norm L1/L2 (MxNE) source estimation methods were also applied to these data for comparison with the RNN method. The RNN approach outperformed other methods in terms of output signal-to-noise ratio, correlation and mean-squared error metrics evaluated against reference event-related field (ERF) and event-related potential (ERP) waveforms. Using MEEG labels with fixed-orientation surface sources produced the most consistent estimates. To estimate sources of ERF and ERP waveforms, the RNN generates temporal dynamics within its internal computational units, driven by sequential structure in neural data used as training labels. It thus provides a data-driven model of computational transformations from psychophysiological events into corresponding event-related neural signals, which is unique among MEEG source reconstruction solutions.

Abnormal inter-hemispheric effective connectivity from left to right auditory regions during Mismatch Negativity (MMN) tasks in psychosis

Anomalous Mismatch Negativity (MMN) in psychosis could be a consequence of disturbed neural oscillatory activity at sensory/perceptual stages of stimulus processing. This study investigated effective connectivity within and between the auditory regions during auditory odd-ball deviance tasks. The analyses were performed on two magnetoencephalography (MEG) datasets: one on duration MMN in a cohort with various diagnoses within the psychosis spectrum and neurotypical controls, and one on duration and pitch MMN in first-episode psychosis patients and matched neurotypical controls. We applied spectral Granger causality to MEG source-reconstructed signals to compute effective connectivity within and between the left and right auditory regions. Both experiments showed that duration-deviance detection was associated with early increases of effective connectivity in the beta band followed by increases in the alpha and theta bands, with the connectivity strength linked to the laterality of the MMN amplitude. Compared to controls, people with psychosis had overall smaller effective connectivity, particularly from left to right auditory regions, in the pathway where bilateral information converges toward lateralized processing, often rightward. Blunted MMN in psychosis might reflect a deficit in inter-hemispheric communication between auditory regions, highlighting a "dysconnection" already at preattentive stages of stimulus processing as a model system of widespread pathophysiology.

Interoceptive signals shape the earliest markers and neural pathway to awareness at the visual threshold

Variations in interoceptive signals from the baroreceptors (BRs) across the cardiac and respiratory cycle can modulate cortical excitability and so affect awareness. It remains debated at what stages of processing they affect awareness-related event-related potentials (ERPs) in different sensory modalities. We investigated the influence of the cardiac (systole/diastole) and the respiratory (inhalation/exhalation) phase on awareness-related ERPs. Subjects discriminated visual threshold stimuli while their electroencephalogram, electrocardiogram, and respiration were simultaneously recorded. We compared ERPs and their intracranial generators for stimuli classified correctly with and without awareness as a function of the cardiac and respiratory phase. Cyclic variations of interoceptive signals from the BRs modulated both the earliest electrophysiological markers and the trajectory of brain activity when subjects became aware of the stimuli: an early sensory component (P1) was the earliest marker of awareness for low (diastole/inhalation) and a perceptual component (visual awareness negativity) for high (systole/exhalation) BR activity, indicating that BR signals interfere with the sensory processing of the visual input. Likewise, activity spread from the primary visceral cortex (posterior insula) to posterior parietal cortices during high and from associative interoceptive centers (anterior insula) to the prefrontal cortex during low BR activity. Consciousness is thereby resolved in cognitive/associative regions when BR is low and in perceptual centers when it is high. Our results suggest that cyclic fluctuations of BR signaling affect both the earliest markers of awareness and the brain processes underlying conscious awareness.

Source localization comparison and combination of OPM-MEG and fMRI to detect sensorimotor cortex responses

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

The exploration of various neuroimaging techniques have become focal points within the field of neuroscience research. Magnetoencephalography based on optically pumped magnetometers (OPM-MEG) has shown significant potential to be the next generation of functional neuroimaging with the advantages of high signal intensity and flexible sensor arrangement. In this study, we constructed a 31-channel OPM-MEG system and performed a preliminary comparison of the temporal and spatial relationship between magnetic responses measured by OPM-MEG and blood-oxygen-level-dependent signals detected by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during a grasping task.

METHODS

For OPM-MEG, the β-band (15-30 Hz) oscillatory activities can be reliably detected across multiple subjects and multiple session runs. To effectively localize the inhibitory oscillatory activities, a source power-spectrum ratio-based imaging method was proposed. This approach was compared with conventional source imaging methods, such as minimum norm-type and beamformer methods, and was applied in OPM-MEG source analysis. Subsequently, the spatial and temporal responses at the source-level between OPM-MEG and fMRI were analyzed.

RESULTS

The effectiveness of the proposed method was confirmed through simulations compared to benchmark methods. Our demonstration revealed an average spatial separation of 10.57 ± 4.41 mm between the localization results of OPM-MEG and fMRI across four subjects. Furthermore, the fMRI-constrained OPM-MEG localization results indicated a more focused imaging extent.

CONCLUSIONS

Taken together, the performance exhibited by OPM-MEG positions it as a potential instrument for functional surgery assessment.

Dual model transfer learning to compensate for individual variability in brain-computer interface

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Recent advancements in brain-computer interface (BCI) technology have seen a significant shift towards incorporating complex decoding models such as deep neural networks (DNNs) to enhance performance. These models are particularly crucial for sophisticated tasks such as regression for decoding arbitrary movements. However, these BCI models trained and tested on individual data often face challenges with limited performance and generalizability across different subjects. This limitation is primarily due to a tremendous number of parameters of DNN models. Training complex models demands extensive datasets. Nevertheless, group data from many subjects may not produce sufficient decoding performance because of inherent variability in neural signals both across individuals and over time METHODS: To address these challenges, this study proposed a transfer learning approach that could effectively adapt to subject-specific variability in cortical regions. Our method involved training two separate movement decoding models: one on individual data and another on pooled group data. We then created a salience map for each cortical region from the individual model, which helped us identify the input's contribution variance across subjects. Based on the contribution variance, we combined individual and group models using a modified knowledge distillation framework. This approach allowed the group model to be universally applicable by assigning greater weights to input data, while the individual model was fine-tuned to focus on areas with significant individual variance RESULTS: Our combined model effectively encapsulated individual variability. We validated this approach with nine subjects performing arm-reaching tasks, with our method outperforming (mean correlation coefficient, r = 0.75) both individual (r = 0.70) and group models (r = 0.40) in decoding performance. In particular, there were notable improvements in cases where individual models showed low performances (e.g., r = 0.50 in the individual decoder to r = 0.61 in the proposed decoder) CONCLUSIONS: These results not only demonstrate the potential of our method for robust BCI, but also underscore its ability to generalize individual data for broader applicability.

Neural indices of heritable impulsivity: Impact of the COMT Val158Met polymorphism on frontal beta power during early motor preparation

Studies of COMT Val158Met suggest that the neural circuitry subserving inhibitory control may be modulated by this functional polymorphism altering cortical dopamine availability, thus giving rise to heritable differences in behaviors. Using an anatomically-constrained magnetoencephalography method and stratifying the sample by COMT genotype, from a larger sample of 153 subjects, we examined the spatial and temporal dynamics of beta oscillations during motor execution and inhibition in 21 healthy Met158/Met158 (high dopamine) or 21 Val158/Val158 (low dopamine) genotype individuals during a Go/NoGo paradigm. While task performance was unaffected, Met158 homozygotes demonstrated an overall increase in beta power across regions essential for inhibitory control during early motor preparation (∼100 ms latency), suggestive of a global motor "pause" on behavior. This increase was especially evident on Go trials with slow response speed and was absent during inhibition failures. Such a pause could underlie the tendency of Met158 allele carriers to be more cautious and inhibited. In contrast, Val158 homozygotes exhibited a beta drop during early motor preparation, indicative of high response readiness. This decrease was associated with measures of behavioral disinhibition and consistent with greater extraversion and impulsivity observed in Val homozygotes. These results provide mechanistic insight into genetically-determined interindividual differences of inhibitory control with higher cortical dopamine associated with momentary response hesitation, and lower dopamine leading to motor impulsivity.

Relationships between peak alpha frequency, age, and autistic traits in young children with and without autism spectrum disorder

Background

Atypical peak alpha frequency (PAF) has been reported in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD); however, the relationships between PAF, age, and autistic traits remain unclear. This study was conducted to investigate and compare the resting-state PAF of young children with ASD and their typically developing (TD) peers using magnetoencephalography (MEG).

Methods

Nineteen children with ASD and 24 TD children, aged 5-7 years, underwent MEG under resting-state conditions. The PAFs in ten brain regions were calculated, and the associations between these findings, age, and autistic traits, measured using the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS), were examined.

Results

There were no significant differences in PAF between the children with ASD and the TD children. However, a unique positive association between age and PAF in the cingulate region was observed in the ASD group, suggesting the potential importance of the cingulate regions as a neurophysiological mechanism underlying distinct developmental trajectory of ASD. Furthermore, a higher PAF in the right temporal region was associated with higher SRS scores in TD children, highlighting the potential role of alpha oscillations in social information processing.

Conclusions

This study emphasizes the importance of regional specificity and developmental factors when investigating neurophysiological markers of ASD. The distinct age-related PAF patterns in the cingulate regions of children with ASD and the association between right temporal PAF and autistic traits in TD children provide novel insights into the neurobiological underpinnings of ASD. These findings pave the way for future research on the functional implications of these neurophysiological patterns and their potential as biomarkers of ASD across the lifespan.

Perceptual awareness of near-threshold tones scales gradually with auditory cortex activity and pupil dilation

Negative-going responses in sensory cortex co-vary with perceptual awareness of sensory stimuli. Given that this awareness negativity has also been observed for undetected stimuli, some have challenged its role for perception. To address this question, we combined magnetoencephalography, electroencephalography, and pupillometry to study how sustained attention and response criterion affect the auditory awareness negativity. Participants first detected distractor sounds and denied hearing task-irrelevant near-threshold tones, which evoked neither awareness negativity nor pupil dilation. These same tones evoked both responses when task-relevant, stronger for hit but also present for miss trials. Participants then rated their perception on a six-point scale to test whether response criterion explains the presence of these responses for miss trials. Decreasing perception ratings were associated with gradually reduced evoked responses, consistent with signal detection theory. These results support the concept of an awareness negativity that is modulated by attention but does not require a non-linear threshold mechanism.

Macroscopic brain dynamics beyond contralateral primary motor cortex for movement prediction

This study investigates the complex relationship between upper limb movement direction and macroscopic neural signals in the brain, which is critical for understanding brain-computer interfaces (BCI). Conventional BCI research has primarily focused on a local area, such as the contralateral primary motor cortex (M1), relying on the population-based decoding method with microelectrode arrays. In contrast, macroscopic approaches such as electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) utilize numerous electrodes to cover broader brain regions. This study probes the potential differences in the mechanisms of microscopic and macroscopic methods. It is important to determine which neural activities effectively predict movements. To investigate this, we analyzed MEG data from nine right-handed participants while performing arm-reaching tasks. We employed dynamic statistical parametric mapping (dSPM) to estimate source activity and built a decoding model composed of long short-term memory (LSTM) and a multilayer perceptron to predict movement trajectories. This model achieved a high correlation coefficient of 0.79 between actual and predicted trajectories. Subsequently, we identified brain regions sensitive to predicting movement direction using the integrated gradients (IG) method, which assesses the predictive contribution of each source activity. The resulting salience map demonstrated a distribution without significant differences across motor-related regions, including M1. Predictions based solely on M1 activity yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.42, nearly half as effective as predictions incorporating all source activities. This suggests that upper limb movements are influenced by various factors such as movement coordination, planning, body and target position recognition, and control, beyond simple muscle activity. All of the activities are needed in the decoding model using macroscopic signals. Our findings also revealed that contralateral and ipsilateral hemispheres contribute equally to movement prediction, implying that BCIs could potentially benefit patients with brain damage in the contralateral hemisphere by utilizing brain signals from the ipsilateral hemisphere. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that macroscopic activity from large brain regions significantly contributes to predicting upper limb movement. Non-invasive BCI systems would require a comprehensive collection of neural signals from multiple brain regions.

Cortical responses to looming sources are explained away by the auditory periphery

A wealth of behavioral evidence indicate that sounds with increasing intensity (i.e. appear to be looming towards the listener) are processed with increased attentional and physiological resources compared to receding sounds. However, the neurophysiological mechanism responsible for such cognitive amplification remains elusive. Here, we show that the large differences seen between cortical responses to looming and receding sounds are in fact almost entirely explained away by nonlinear encoding at the level of the auditory periphery. We collected electroencephalography (EEG) data during an oddball paradigm to elicit mismatch negativity (MMN) and others Event Related Potentials (EPRs), in response to deviant stimuli with both dynamic (looming and receding) and constant level (flat) differences to the standard in the same participants. We then combined a computational model of the auditory periphery with generative EEG methods (temporal response functions, TRFs) to model the single-participant ERPs responses to flat deviants, and used them to predict the effect of the same mechanism on looming and receding stimuli. The flat model explained 45% variance of the looming response, and 33% of the receding response. This provide striking evidence that difference wave responses to looming and receding sounds result from the same cortical mechanism that generate responses to constant-level deviants: all such differences are the sole consequence of their particular physical morphology getting amplified and integrated by peripheral auditory mechanisms. Thus, not all effects seen cortically proceed from top-down modulations by high-level decision variables, but can rather be performed early and efficiently by feed-forward peripheral mechanisms that evolved precisely to sparing subsequent networks with the necessity to implement such mechanisms.

Application of Data-Driven computing to patient-specific prediction of the viscoelastic response of human brain under transcranial ultrasound stimulation

We present a class of model-free Data-Driven solvers that effectively enable the utilization of in situ and in vivo imaging data directly in full-scale calculations of the mechanical response of the human brain to sonic and ultrasonic stimulation, entirely bypassing the need for analytical modeling or regression of the data. The well-posedness of the approach and its convergence with respect to data are proven analytically. We demonstrate the approach, including its ability to make detailed spatially resolved patient-specific predictions of wave patterns, using public-domain MRI images, MRE data and commercially available solid-mechanics software.

Spatiotemporal responses to emotional conflict and its psychiatric correlates in adolescents with epilepsy using magnetoencephalography

People with epilepsy often suffer from comorbid psychiatric disorders, which negatively affects their quality of life. Emotion regulation is an important cognitive process that is impaired in individuals with psychiatric disorders, such as depression. Adults with epilepsy also show difficulties in emotion regulation, particularly during later-stage, higher-order cognitive processing. Yet, the spatiotemporal and frequency correlates of these functional brain deficits in epilepsy remain unknown, as do the nature of these deficits in adolescent epilepsy. Here, we aim to elucidate the spatiotemporal profile of emotional conflict processing in adolescents with epilepsy, relative to controls, using magnetoencephalography (MEG) and relate these findings to anxiety and depression symptom severity assessed with self-report scales. We hypothesized to see blunted brain activity during emotional conflict in adolescents with epilepsy, relative to controls, in the posterior parietal, prefrontal and cingulate cortices due to their role in explicit and implicit regulation around participant response (500-1000 ms). We analyzed MEG recordings from 53 adolescents (28 epilepsy [14focal,14generalized], 25 controls) during an emotional conflict task. We showed that while controls exhibited behavioral interference to emotional conflict, adolescents with epilepsy failed to exhibit this normative response time pattern. Adolescents with epilepsy showed blunted brain responses to emotional conflict in brain regions related to error evaluation and learning around the average response time (500-700 ms), and in regions involved in decision making during post-response monitoring (800-1000 ms). Interestingly, behavioral patterns and psychiatric symptom severity varied between epilepsy subgroups, wherein those with focal epilepsy showed preserved response time interference. Thus, brain responses were regressed with depression and anxiety levels for each epilepsy subgroup separately. Analyses revealed that under activation in error evaluation regions (500-600 ms) predicted anxiety and depression in focal epilepsy, while regions related to learning (600-700 ms) predicted anxiety in generalized epilepsy, suggesting differential mechanisms of dysfunction in these subgroups. Despite similar rates of anxiety and depression across the groups, adolescents with epilepsy still exhibited deficits in emotional conflict processing in brain and behavioral responses. This suggests that these deficits may exist independently from psychopathology and may stem from underlying dysfunctions that predispose these individuals to develop both disorders. Findings such as these may provide potential targets for future research and therapies.

A Novel Time-Frequency Parameterization Method for Oscillations in Specific Frequency Bands and Its Application on OPM-MEG

Time-frequency parameterization for oscillations in specific frequency bands reflects the dynamic changes in the brain. It is related to cognitive behavior and diseases and has received significant attention in neuroscience. However, many studies do not consider the impact of the aperiodic noise and neural activity, including their time-varying fluctuations. Some studies are limited by the low resolution of the time-frequency spectrum and parameter-solved operation. Therefore, this paper proposes super-resolution time-frequency periodic parameterization of (transient) oscillation (STPPTO). STPPTO obtains a super-resolution time-frequency spectrum with Superlet transform. Then, the time-frequency representation of oscillations is obtained by removing the aperiodic component fitted in a time-resolved way. Finally, the definition of transient events is used to parameterize oscillations. The performance of this method is validated on simulated data and its reliability is demonstrated on magnetoencephalography. We show how it can be used to explore and analyze oscillatory activity under rhythmic stimulation.

Behavioral, Functional Imaging, and Neurophysiological Outcomes of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation and Speech-Language Therapy in an Individual with Aphasia

Speech-language therapy (SLT) is the most effective technique to improve language performance in persons with aphasia. However, residual language impairments remain even after intensive SLT. Recent studies suggest that combining transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) with SLT may improve language performance in persons with aphasia. However, our understanding of how tDCS and SLT impact brain and behavioral relation in aphasia is poorly understood. We investigated the impact of tDCS and SLT on a behavioral measure of scripted conversation and on functional connectivity assessed with multiple methods, both resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and resting-state electroencephalography (rs-EEG). An individual with aphasia received 15 sessions of 20-min cathodal tDCS to the right angular gyrus concurrent with 40 min of SLT. Performance during scripted conversation was measured three times at baseline, twice immediately post-treatment, and at 4- and 8-weeks post-treatment. rs-fMRI was measured pre-and post-3-weeks of treatment. rs-EEG was measured on treatment days 1, 5, 10, and 15. Results show that both communication performance and left hemisphere functional connectivity may improve after concurrent tDCS and SLT. Results are in line with aphasia models of language recovery that posit a beneficial role of left hemisphere perilesional areas in language recovery.

EEG/MEG source imaging of deep brain activity within the maximum entropy on the mean framework: Simulations and validation in epilepsy

Electro/Magneto-EncephaloGraphy (EEG/MEG) source imaging (EMSI) of epileptic activity from deep generators is often challenging due to the higher sensitivity of EEG/MEG to superficial regions and to the spatial configuration of subcortical structures. We previously demonstrated the ability of the coherent Maximum Entropy on the Mean (cMEM) method to accurately localize the superficial cortical generators and their spatial extent. Here, we propose a depth-weighted adaptation of cMEM to localize deep generators more accurately. These methods were evaluated using realistic MEG/high-density EEG (HD-EEG) simulations of epileptic activity and actual MEG/HD-EEG recordings from patients with focal epilepsy. We incorporated depth-weighting within the MEM framework to compensate for its preference for superficial generators. We also included a mesh of both hippocampi, as an additional deep structure in the source model. We generated 5400 realistic simulations of interictal epileptic discharges for MEG and HD-EEG involving a wide range of spatial extents and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) levels, before investigating EMSI on clinical HD-EEG in 16 patients and MEG in 14 patients. Clinical interictal epileptic discharges were marked by visual inspection. We applied three EMSI methods: cMEM, depth-weighted cMEM and depth-weighted minimum norm estimate (MNE). The ground truth was defined as the true simulated generator or as a drawn region based on clinical information available for patients. For deep sources, depth-weighted cMEM improved the localization when compared to cMEM and depth-weighted MNE, whereas depth-weighted cMEM did not deteriorate localization accuracy for superficial regions. For patients' data, we observed improvement in localization for deep sources, especially for the patients with mesial temporal epilepsy, for which cMEM failed to reconstruct the initial generator in the hippocampus. Depth weighting was more crucial for MEG (gradiometers) than for HD-EEG. Similar findings were found when considering depth weighting for the wavelet extension of MEM. In conclusion, depth-weighted cMEM improved the localization of deep sources without or with minimal deterioration of the localization of the superficial sources. This was demonstrated using extensive simulations with MEG and HD-EEG and clinical MEG and HD-EEG for epilepsy patients.

Multi-Modal Electrophysiological Source Imaging With Attention Neural Networks Based on Deep Fusion of EEG and MEG

The process of reconstructing underlying cortical and subcortical electrical activities from Electroencephalography (EEG) or Magnetoencephalography (MEG) recordings is called Electrophysiological Source Imaging (ESI). Given the complementarity between EEG and MEG in measuring radial and tangential cortical sources, combined EEG/MEG is considered beneficial in improving the reconstruction performance of ESI algorithms. Traditional algorithms mainly emphasize incorporating predesigned neurophysiological priors to solve the ESI problem. Deep learning frameworks aim to directly learn the mapping from scalp EEG/MEG measurements to the underlying brain source activities in a data-driven manner, demonstrating superior performance compared to traditional methods. However, most of the existing deep learning approaches for the ESI problem are performed on a single modality of EEG or MEG, meaning the complementarity of these two modalities has not been fully utilized. How to fuse the EEG and MEG in a more principled manner under the deep learning paradigm remains a challenging question. This study develops a Multi-Modal Deep Fusion (MMDF) framework using Attention Neural Networks (ANN) to fully leverage the complementary information between EEG and MEG for solving the ESI inverse problem, which is termed as MMDF-ANN. Specifically, our proposed brain source imaging approach consists of four phases, including feature extraction, weight generation, deep feature fusion, and source mapping. Our experimental results on both synthetic dataset and real dataset demonstrated that using a fusion of EEG and MEG can significantly improve the source localization accuracy compared to using a single-modality of EEG or MEG. Compared to the benchmark algorithms, MMDF-ANN demonstrated good stability when reconstructing sources with extended activation areas and situations of EEG/MEG measurements with a low signal-to-noise ratio.

Repetition Suppression for Familiar Visual Words Through Acceleration of Early Processing

The visual N1 (N170) component with occipito-temporal negativity and fronto-central positivity is sensitive to visual expertise for print. Slightly later, an N200 component with an increase after stimulus repetition was reported to be specific for Chinese, but found at centro-parietal electrodes against a mastoid reference. Given the unusual location, temporal proximity to the N1, and atypical repetition behavior, we aimed at clarifying the relation between the two components. We collected 128-channel EEG data from 18 native Chinese readers during a script decision experiment. Familiar Chinese one- and two-character words were presented among unfamiliar Korean control stimuli with half of the stimuli immediately repeated. Stimulus repetition led to a focal increase in the N1 onset and to a wide-spread decrease in the N1 offset, especially for familiar Chinese and also prominently near the mastoids. A TANOVA analysis corroborated robust repetition effects in the N1 offset across ERP maps with a modulation by script familiarity around 300 ms. Microstate analyses revealed a shorter N1 microstate duration after repetitions, especially for Chinese. The results demonstrate that the previously reported centro-parietal N200 effects after repetitions reflect changes during the N1 offset at occipito-temporal electrodes including the mastoids. Although larger for Chinese, repetition effects could also be found for two-character Korean words, suggesting that they are not specific for Chinese. While the decrease of the N1 offset after repetition is in agreement with a repetition suppression effect, the microstate findings suggest that at least part of the facilitation is due to accelerated processing after repetition.

Neuronal Coupling Modes Show Differential Development in the Early Cortical Activity Networks of Human Newborns

The third trimester is a critical period for the development of functional networks that support the lifelong neurocognitive performance, yet the emergence of neuronal coupling in these networks is poorly understood. Here, we used longitudinal high-density electroencephalographic recordings from preterm infants during the period from 33 to 45 weeks of conceptional age (CA) to characterize early spatiotemporal patterns in the development of local cortical function and the intrinsic coupling modes [ICMs; phase-phase (PPCs), amplitude-amplitude (AACs), and phase-amplitude correlations (PACs)]. Absolute local power showed a robust increase with CA across the full frequency spectrum, while local PACs showed sleep state-specific, biphasic development that peaked a few weeks before normal birth. AACs and distant PACs decreased globally at nearly all frequencies. In contrast, the PPCs showed frequency- and region-selective development, with an increase of coupling strength with CA between frontal, central, and occipital regions at low-delta and alpha frequencies together with a wider-spread decrease at other frequencies. Our findings together present the spectrally and spatially differential development of the distinct ICMs during the neonatal period and provide their developmental templates for future basic and clinical research.

Speech prosody enhances the neural processing of syntax

Human language relies on the correct processing of syntactic information, as it is essential for successful communication between speakers. As an abstract level of language, syntax has often been studied separately from the physical form of the speech signal, thus often masking the interactions that can promote better syntactic processing in the human brain. However, behavioral and neural evidence from adults suggests the idea that prosody and syntax interact, and studies in infants support the notion that prosody assists language learning. Here we analyze a MEG dataset to investigate how acoustic cues, specifically prosody, interact with syntactic representations in the brains of native English speakers. More specifically, to examine whether prosody enhances the cortical encoding of syntactic representations, we decode syntactic phrase boundaries directly from brain activity, and evaluate possible modulations of this decoding by the prosodic boundaries. Our findings demonstrate that the presence of prosodic boundaries improves the neural representation of phrase boundaries, indicating the facilitative role of prosodic cues in processing abstract linguistic features. This work has implications for interactive models of how the brain processes different linguistic features. Future research is needed to establish the neural underpinnings of prosody-syntax interactions in languages with different typological characteristics.

Reading instruction causes changes in category-selective visual cortex

Education sculpts specialized neural circuits for skills like reading that are critical to success in modern society but were not anticipated by the selective pressures of evolution. Does the emergence of brain regions that selectively process novel visual stimuli like words occur at the expense of cortical representations of other stimuli like faces and objects? "Neuronal Recycling" predicts that learning to read should enhance the response to words in ventral occipitotemporal cortex (VOTC) and decrease the response to other visual categories such as faces and objects. To test this hypothesis, and more broadly to understand the changes that are induced by the early stages of literacy instruction, we conducted a randomized controlled trial with pre-school children (five years of age). Children were randomly assigned to intervention programs focused on either reading skills or oral language skills and magnetoencephalography (MEG) data collected before and after the intervention was used to measure visual responses to images of text, faces, and objects. We found that being taught reading versus oral language skills induced different patterns of change in category-selective regions of visual cortex, but that there was not a clear tradeoff between the response to words versus other categories. Within a predefined region of VOTC corresponding to the visual word form area (VWFA) we found that the relative amplitude of responses to text, faces, and objects changed, but increases in the response to words were not linked to decreases in the response to faces or objects. How these changes play out over a longer timescale is still unknown but, based on these data, we can surmise that high-level visual cortex undergoes rapid changes as children enter school and begin establishing new skills like literacy.

Cortical signatures of auditory looming bias show cue-specific adaptation between newborns and young adults

Adaptive biases in favor of approaching, or "looming", sounds have been found across ages and species, thereby implicating the potential of their evolutionary origin and universal basis. The human auditory system is well-developed at birth, yet spatial hearing abilities further develop with age. To disentangle the speculated inborn, evolutionary component of the auditory looming bias from its learned counterpart, we collected high-density electroencephalographic data across human adults and newborns. As distance-motion cues we manipulated either the sound's intensity or spectral shape, which is pinna-induced and thus prenatally inaccessible. Through cortical source localisation we demonstrated the emergence of the bias in both age groups at the level of Heschl's gyrus. Adults exhibited the bias in both attentive and inattentive states; yet differences in amplitude and latency appeared based on attention and cue type. Contrary to the adults, in newborns the bias was elicited only through manipulations of intensity and not spectral cues. We conclude that the looming bias comprises innate components while flexibly incorporating the spatial cues acquired through lifelong exposure.

Sentence superiority in the reading brain

When a sequence of written words is briefly presented and participants are asked to identify just one word at a post-cued location, then word identification accuracy is higher when the word is presented in a grammatically correct sequence compared with an ungrammatical sequence. This sentence superiority effect has been reported in several behavioral studies and two EEG investigations. Taken together, the results of these studies support the hypothesis that the sentence superiority effect is primarily driven by rapid access to a sentence-level representation via partial word identification processes that operate in parallel over several words. Here we used MEG to examine the neural structures involved in this early stage of written sentence processing, and to further specify the timing of the different processes involved. Source activities over time showed grammatical vs. ungrammatical differences first in the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG: 321-406 ms), then the left anterior temporal lobe (ATL: 466-531 ms), and finally in both left IFG (549-602 ms) and left posterior superior temporal gyrus (pSTG: 553-622 ms). We interpret the early IFG activity as reflecting the rapid bottom-up activation of sentence-level representations, including syntax, enabled by partly parallel word processing. Subsequent activity in ATL and pSTG is thought to reflect the constraints imposed by such sentence-level representations on on-going word-based semantic activation (ATL), and the subsequent development of a more detailed sentence-level representation (pSTG). These results provide further support for a cascaded interactive-activation account of sentence reading.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of cortical somatosensory network in typically developing children

Sense of touch is essential for our interactions with external objects and fine control of hand actions. Despite extensive research on human somatosensory processing, it is still elusive how involved brain regions interact as a dynamic network in processing tactile information. Few studies probed temporal dynamics of somatosensory information flow and reported inconsistent results. Here, we examined cortical somatosensory processing through magnetic source imaging and cortico-cortical coupling dynamics. We recorded magnetoencephalography signals from typically developing children during unilateral pneumatic stimulation. Neural activities underlying somatosensory evoked fields were mapped with dynamic statistical parametric mapping, assessed with spatiotemporal activation analysis, and modeled by Granger causality. Unilateral pneumatic stimulation evoked prominent and consistent activations in the contralateral primary and secondary somatosensory areas but weaker and less consistent activations in the ipsilateral primary and secondary somatosensory areas. Activations in the contralateral primary motor cortex and supramarginal gyrus were also consistently observed. Spatiotemporal activation and Granger causality analysis revealed initial serial information flow from contralateral primary to supramarginal gyrus, contralateral primary motor cortex, and contralateral secondary and later dynamic and parallel information flows between the consistently activated contralateral cortical areas. Our study reveals the spatiotemporal dynamics of cortical somatosensory processing in the normal developing brain.

Selective Neural Entrainment Reveals Hierarchical Tuning to Linguistic Regularities in Reading

Reading is both a visual and a linguistic task, and as such it relies on both general-purpose, visual mechanisms and more abstract, meaning-oriented processes. Disentangling the roles of these resources is of paramount importance in reading research. The present study capitalizes on the coupling of fast periodic visual stimulation and MEG recordings to address this issue and investigate the role of different kinds of visual and linguistic units in the visual word identification system. We compared strings of pseudo-characters; strings of consonants (e.g., sfcl); readable, but unattested strings (e.g., amsi); frequent, but non-meaningful chunks (e.g., idge); suffixes (e.g., ment); and words (e.g., vibe); and looked for discrimination responses with a particular focus on the ventral, occipito-temporal regions. The results revealed sensitivity to alphabetic, readable, familiar, and lexical stimuli. Interestingly, there was no discrimination between suffixes and equally frequent, but meaningless endings, thus highlighting a lack of sensitivity to semantics. Taken together, the data suggest that the visual word identification system, at least in its early processing stages, is particularly tuned to form-based regularities, most likely reflecting its reliance on general-purpose, statistical learning mechanisms that are a core feature of the visual system as implemented in the ventral stream.

Changes in visually and auditory attended audiovisual speech processing in cochlear implant users: A longitudinal ERP study

Limited auditory input, whether caused by hearing loss or by electrical stimulation through a cochlear implant (CI), can be compensated by the remaining senses. Specifically for CI users, previous studies reported not only improved visual skills, but also altered cortical processing of unisensory visual and auditory stimuli. However, in multisensory scenarios, it is still unclear how auditory deprivation (before implantation) and electrical hearing experience (after implantation) affect cortical audiovisual speech processing. Here, we present a prospective longitudinal electroencephalography (EEG) study which systematically examined the deprivation- and CI-induced alterations of cortical processing of audiovisual words by comparing event-related potentials (ERPs) in postlingually deafened CI users before and after implantation (five weeks and six months of CI use). A group of matched normal-hearing (NH) listeners served as controls. The participants performed a word-identification task with congruent and incongruent audiovisual words, focusing their attention on either the visual (lip movement) or the auditory speech signal. This allowed us to study the (top-down) attention effect on the (bottom-up) sensory cortical processing of audiovisual speech. When compared to the NH listeners, the CI candidates (before implantation) and the CI users (after implantation) exhibited enhanced lipreading abilities and an altered cortical response at the N1 latency range (90-150 ms) that was characterized by a decreased theta oscillation power (4-8 Hz) and a smaller amplitude in the auditory cortex. After implantation, however, the auditory-cortex response gradually increased and developed a stronger intra-modal connectivity. Nevertheless, task efficiency and activation in the visual cortex was significantly modulated in both groups by focusing attention on the visual as compared to the auditory speech signal, with the NH listeners additionally showing an attention-dependent decrease in beta oscillation power (13-30 Hz). In sum, these results suggest remarkable deprivation effects on audiovisual speech processing in the auditory cortex, which partially reverse after implantation. Although even experienced CI users still show distinct audiovisual speech processing compared to NH listeners, pronounced effects of (top-down) direction of attention on (bottom-up) audiovisual processing can be observed in both groups. However, NH listeners but not CI users appear to show enhanced allocation of cognitive resources in visually as compared to auditory attended audiovisual speech conditions, which supports our behavioural observations of poorer lipreading abilities and reduced visual influence on audition in NH listeners as compared to CI users.

Impaired Cortical Tracking of Speech in Children with Developmental Language Disorder

In developmental language disorder (DLD), learning to comprehend and express oneself with spoken language is impaired, but the reason for this remains unknown. Using millisecond-scale magnetoencephalography recordings combined with machine learning models, we investigated whether the possible neural basis of this disruption lies in poor cortical tracking of speech. The stimuli were common spoken Finnish words (e.g., dog, car, hammer) and sounds with corresponding meanings (e.g., dog bark, car engine, hammering). In both children with DLD (10 boys and 7 girls) and typically developing (TD) control children (14 boys and 3 girls), aged 10-15 years, the cortical activation to spoken words was best modeled as time-locked to the unfolding speech input at ∼100 ms latency between sound and cortical activation. Amplitude envelope (amplitude changes) and spectrogram (detailed time-varying spectral content) of the spoken words, but not other sounds, were very successfully decoded based on time-locked brain responses in bilateral temporal areas; based on the cortical responses, the models could tell at ∼75-85% accuracy which of the two sounds had been presented to the participant. However, the cortical representation of the amplitude envelope information was poorer in children with DLD compared with TD children at longer latencies (at ∼200-300 ms lag). We interpret this effect as reflecting poorer retention of acoustic-phonetic information in short-term memory. This impaired tracking could potentially affect the processing and learning of words as well as continuous speech. The present results offer an explanation for the problems in language comprehension and acquisition in DLD.

Cross-modal plasticity in children with cochlear implant: converging evidence from EEG and functional near-infrared spectroscopy

Over the first years of life, the brain undergoes substantial organization in response to environmental stimulation. In a silent world, it may promote vision by (i) recruiting resources from the auditory cortex and (ii) making the visual cortex more efficient. It is unclear when such changes occur and how adaptive they are, questions that children with cochlear implants can help address. Here, we examined 7-18 years old children: 50 had cochlear implants, with delayed or age-appropriate language abilities, and 25 had typical hearing and language. High-density electroencephalography and functional near-infrared spectroscopy were used to evaluate cortical responses to a low-level visual task. Evidence for a 'weaker visual cortex response' and 'less synchronized or less inhibitory activity of auditory association areas' in the implanted children with language delays suggests that cross-modal reorganization can be maladaptive and does not necessarily strengthen the dominant visual sense.

The neural representation of an auditory spatial cue in the primate cortex

Humans make use of small differences in the timing of sounds at the two ears-interaural time differences (ITDs)-to locate their sources. Despite extensive investigation, however, the neural representation of ITDs in the human brain is contentious, particularly the range of ITDs explicitly represented by dedicated neural detectors. Here, using magneto- and electro-encephalography (MEG and EEG), we demonstrate evidence of a sparse neural representation of ITDs in the human cortex. The magnitude of cortical activity to sounds presented via insert earphones oscillated as a function of increasing ITD-within and beyond auditory cortical regions-and listeners rated the perceptual quality of these sounds according to the same oscillating pattern. This pattern was accurately described by a population of model neurons with preferred ITDs constrained to the narrow, sound-frequency-dependent range evident in other mammalian species. When scaled for head size, the distribution of ITD detectors in the human cortex is remarkably like that recorded in vivo from the cortex of rhesus monkeys, another large primate that uses ITDs for source localization. The data solve a long-standing issue concerning the neural representation of ITDs in humans and suggest a representation that scales for head size and sound frequency in an optimal manner.

Simultaneous MEG and EEG source imaging of electrophysiological activity in response to acute transcranial photobiomodulation

Introduction

Transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique that improves human cognition. The effects of tPBM of the right forehead on neurophysiological activity have been previously investigated using EEG in sensor space. However, the spatial resolution of these studies is limited. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is known to facilitate a higher spatial resolution of brain source images. This study aimed to image post-tPBM effects in brain space based on both MEG and EEG measurements across the entire human brain.

Methods

MEG and EEG scans were concurrently acquired for 6 min before and after 8-min of tPBM delivered using a 1,064-nm laser on the right forehead of 25 healthy participants. Group-level changes in both the MEG and EEG power spectral density with respect to the baseline (pre-tPBM) were quantified and averaged within each frequency band in the sensor space. Constrained modeling was used to generate MEG and EEG source images of post-tPBM, followed by cluster-based permutation analysis for family wise error correction (p < 0.05).

Results

The 8-min tPBM enabled significant increases in alpha (8-12 Hz) and beta (13-30 Hz) powers across multiple cortical regions, as confirmed by MEG and EEG source images. Moreover, tPBM-enhanced oscillations in the beta band were located not only near the stimulation site but also in remote cerebral regions, including the frontal, parietal, and occipital regions, particularly on the ipsilateral side.

Discussion

MEG and EEG results shown in this study demonstrated that tPBM modulates neurophysiological activity locally and in distant cortical areas. The EEG topographies reported in this study were consistent with previous observations. This study is the first to present MEG and EEG evidence of the electrophysiological effects of tPBM in the brain space, supporting the potential utility of tPBM in treating neurological diseases through the modulation of brain oscillations.

Neural correlates of retrospective memory confidence during face-name associative learning

The ability to accurately assess one's own memory performance during learning is essential for adaptive behavior, but the brain mechanisms underlying this metamemory function are not well understood. We investigated the neural correlates of memory accuracy and retrospective memory confidence in a face-name associative learning task using magnetoencephalography in healthy young adults (n = 32). We found that high retrospective confidence was associated with stronger occipital event-related fields during encoding and widespread event-related fields during retrieval compared to low confidence. On the other hand, memory accuracy was linked to medial temporal activities during both encoding and retrieval, but only in low-confidence trials. A decrease in oscillatory power at alpha/beta bands in the parietal regions during retrieval was associated with higher memory confidence. In addition, representational similarity analysis at the single-trial level revealed distributed but differentiable neural activities associated with memory accuracy and confidence during both encoding and retrieval. In summary, our study unveiled distinct neural activity patterns related to memory confidence and accuracy during associative learning and underscored the crucial role of parietal regions in metamemory.

Distributed source modeling of stereoencephalographic measurements of ictal activity

OBJECTIVES

Stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) can define the epileptogenic zone (EZ). However, SEEG is susceptible to the sampling bias, where no SEEG recording is taken within a circumscribed EZ.

METHODS

Nine patients with medically refractory epilepsy underwent SEEG recording, and brain resection got positive outcomes. Ictal neuronal currents were estimated by distributed source modeling using the SEEG data and individual's anatomical magnetic resonance imaging. Using a retrospective leave-one-out data sub-sampling, we evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of the current estimates using MRI after surgical resection or radio-frequency ablation.

RESULTS

The sensitivity and specificity in detecting the EZ were indistinguishable from either the data from all electrodes or the sub-sampled data (rank sum test: rank sum = 23719, p = 0.13) when at least one remaining electrode contact was no more than 20 mm away.

CONCLUSIONS

The distributed neuronal current estimates of ictal SEEG data can mitigate the challenge of delineating the boundary of the EZ in cases of missing an electrode implanted within the EZ and a required second SEEG exploration.

SIGNIFICANCE

Distributed source modeling can be a tool for clinicians to infer the EZ by allowing for more flexible planning of the electrode implantation route and minimizing the number of electrodes.

No Differences in Auditory Steady-State Responses in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Typically Developing Children

Auditory steady-state response (ASSR) has been studied as a potential biomarker for abnormal auditory sensory processing in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with mixed results. Motivated by prior somatosensory findings of group differences in inter-trial coherence (ITC) between ASD and typically developing (TD) individuals at twice the steady-state stimulation frequency, we examined ASSR at 25 and 50 as well as 43 and 86 Hz in response to 25-Hz and 43-Hz auditory stimuli, respectively, using magnetoencephalography. Data were recorded from 22 ASD and 31 TD children, ages 6-17 years. ITC measures showed prominent ASSRs at the stimulation and double frequencies, without significant group differences. These results do not support ASSR as a robust ASD biomarker of abnormal auditory processing in ASD. Furthermore, the previously observed atypical double-frequency somatosensory response in ASD did not generalize to the auditory modality. Thus, the hypothesis about modality-independent abnormal local connectivity in ASD was not supported.

Negation mitigates rather than inverts the neural representations of adjectives

Combinatoric linguistic operations underpin human language processes, but how meaning is composed and refined in the mind of the reader is not well understood. We address this puzzle by exploiting the ubiquitous function of negation. We track the online effects of negation ("not") and intensifiers ("really") on the representation of scalar adjectives (e.g., "good") in parametrically designed behavioral and neurophysiological (MEG) experiments. The behavioral data show that participants first interpret negated adjectives as affirmative and later modify their interpretation towards, but never exactly as, the opposite meaning. Decoding analyses of neural activity further reveal significant above chance decoding accuracy for negated adjectives within 600 ms from adjective onset, suggesting that negation does not invert the representation of adjectives (i.e., "not bad" represented as "good"); furthermore, decoding accuracy for negated adjectives is found to be significantly lower than that for affirmative adjectives. Overall, these results suggest that negation mitigates rather than inverts the neural representations of adjectives. This putative suppression mechanism of negation is supported by increased synchronization of beta-band neural activity in sensorimotor areas. The analysis of negation provides a steppingstone to understand how the human brain represents changes of meaning over time.

Electromagnetic Source Imaging via a Data-Synthesis-Based Convolutional Encoder-Decoder Network

Electromagnetic source imaging (ESI) requires solving a highly ill-posed inverse problem. To seek a unique solution, traditional ESI methods impose various forms of priors that may not accurately reflect the actual source properties, which may hinder their broad applications. To overcome this limitation, in this article, a novel data-synthesized spatiotemporally convolutional encoder-decoder network (DST-CedNet) method is proposed for ESI. The DST-CedNet recasts ESI as a machine learning problem, where discriminative learning and latent-space representations are integrated in a CedNet to learn a robust mapping from the measured electroencephalography/magnetoencephalography (E/MEG) signals to the brain activity. In particular, by incorporating prior knowledge regarding dynamical brain activities, a novel data synthesis strategy is devised to generate large-scale samples for effectively training CedNet. This stands in contrast to traditional ESI methods where the prior information is often enforced via constraints primarily aimed for mathematical convenience. Extensive numerical experiments as well as analysis of a real MEG and epilepsy EEG dataset demonstrate that the DST-CedNet outperforms several state-of-the-art ESI methods in robustly estimating source signals under a variety of source configurations.

How long is long? Word length effects in reading correspond to minimal graphemic units: An MEG study in Bangla

This paper presents a magnetoencephalography (MEG) study on reading in Bangla, an east Indo-Aryan language predominantly written in an abugida script. The study aims to uncover how visual stimuli are processed and mapped onto abstract linguistic representations in the brain. Specifically, we investigate the neural responses that correspond to word length in Bangla, a language with a unique orthography that introduces multiple ways to measure word length. Our results show that MEG signals localised in the anterior left fusiform gyrus, at around 130ms, are highly correlated with word length when measured in terms of the number of minimal graphemic units in the word rather than independent graphemic units (akśar) or phonemes. Our findings suggest that minimal graphemic units could serve as a suitable metric for measuring word length in non-alphabetic orthographies such as Bangla.

Sex-specific Differences in Resting Oscillatory Dynamics in Children with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure

At rest children with prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) exhibit impaired static and dynamic functional connectivity, along with decreased alpha oscillations. Sex-specific information regarding the impact of PAE on whole-brain resting-state gamma spectral power remains unknown. Eyes-closed and eyes-open MEG resting-state data were examined in 83 children, ages 6-13 years of age. Using a matched design, the sample consisted of 42 typically developing children (TDC) (22 males/20 females) and 41 children with PAE and/or a fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) diagnosis (21 males/20 females). Whole-brain source resting-state spectral power was examined to determine group and sex specific relationships. Within gamma, we found sex and group specific changes such that female participants with PAE/FASD had increased gamma power when compared to female TDC and male participants with PAE/FASD. These differences were detected in most source regions analyzed during both resting-states, and were observed across the age spectrum examined. Within delta, we found sex and group specific changes such that female participants with PAE/FASD had decreased delta power when compared to female TDC and male participants with PAE/FASD. The reduced delta oscillations in female participants with PAE/FASD were detected in several source regions during eyes-closed rest and were evident at younger ages. These results indicate PAE alters neural oscillations during rest in a sex-specific manner, with females with PAE/FASD showing the largest perturbations. These results further demonstrate PAE has global effects on resting-state spectral power and connectivity, creating long-term consequences by potentially disrupting the excitation/inhibition balance in the brain, interrupting normative neurodevelopment.

Visual perception of highly memorable images is mediated by a distributed network of ventral visual regions that enable a late memorability response

Behavioral and neuroscience studies in humans and primates have shown that memorability is an intrinsic property of an image that predicts its strength of encoding into and retrieval from memory. While previous work has independently probed when or where this memorability effect may occur in the human brain, a description of its spatiotemporal dynamics is missing. Here, we used representational similarity analysis (RSA) to combine functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with source-estimated magnetoencephalography (MEG) to simultaneously measure when and where the human cortex is sensitive to differences in image memorability. Results reveal that visual perception of High Memorable images, compared to Low Memorable images, recruits a set of regions of interest (ROIs) distributed throughout the ventral visual cortex: a late memorability response (from around 300 ms) in early visual cortex (EVC), inferior temporal cortex, lateral occipital cortex, fusiform gyrus, and banks of the superior temporal sulcus. Image memorability magnitude results are represented after high-level feature processing in visual regions and reflected in classical memory regions in the medial temporal lobe (MTL). Our results present, to our knowledge, the first unified spatiotemporal account of visual memorability effect across the human cortex, further supporting the levels-of-processing theory of perception and memory.

Abnormal connectivity and activation during audiovisual speech perception in schizophrenia

The unconscious integration of vocal and facial cues during speech perception facilitates face-to-face communication. Recent studies have provided substantial behavioural evidence concerning impairments in audiovisual (AV) speech perception in schizophrenia. However, the specific neurophysiological mechanism underlying these deficits remains unknown. Here, we investigated activities and connectivities centered on the auditory cortex during AV speech perception in schizophrenia. Using magnetoencephalography, we recorded and analysed event-related fields in response to auditory (A: voice), visual (V: face) and AV (voice-face) stimuli in 23 schizophrenia patients (13 males) and 22 healthy controls (13 males). The functional connectivity associated with the subadditive response to AV stimulus (i.e., [AV] < [A] + [V]) was also compared between the two groups. Within the healthy control group, [AV] activity was smaller than the sum of [A] and [V] at latencies of approximately 100 ms in the posterior ramus of the lateral sulcus in only the left hemisphere, demonstrating a subadditive N1m effect. Conversely, the schizophrenia group did not show such a subadditive response. Furthermore, weaker functional connectivity from the posterior ramus of the lateral sulcus of the left hemisphere to the fusiform gyrus of the right hemisphere was observed in schizophrenia. Notably, this weakened connectivity was associated with the severity of negative symptoms. These results demonstrate abnormalities in connectivity between speech- and face-related cortical areas in schizophrenia. This aberrant subadditive response and connectivity deficits for integrating speech and facial information may be the neural basis of social communication dysfunctions in schizophrenia.

Connectome spectrum electromagnetic tomography: A method to reconstruct electrical brain source networks at high-spatial resolution

Connectome spectrum electromagnetic tomography (CSET) combines diffusion MRI-derived structural connectivity data with well-established graph signal processing tools to solve the M/EEG inverse problem. Using simulated EEG signals from fMRI responses, and two EEG datasets on visual-evoked potentials, we provide evidence supporting that (i) CSET captures realistic neurophysiological patterns with better accuracy than state-of-the-art methods, (ii) CSET can reconstruct brain responses more accurately and with more robustness to intrinsic noise in the EEG signal. These results demonstrate that CSET offers high spatio-temporal accuracy, enabling neuroscientists to extend their research beyond the current limitations of low sampling frequency in functional MRI and the poor spatial resolution of M/EEG.

Monitoring Changes in TMS-Evoked EEG and EMG Activity During 1 Hz rTMS of the Healthy Motor Cortex

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique capable of inducing neuroplasticity as measured by changes in peripheral muscle electromyography (EMG) or electroencephalography (EEG) from pre-to-post stimulation. However, temporal courses of neuromodulation during ongoing rTMS are unclear. Monitoring cortical dynamics via TMS-evoked responses using EMG (motor-evoked potentials; MEPs) and EEG (transcranial-evoked potentials; TEPs) during rTMS might provide further essential insights into its mode of action - temporal course of potential modulations. The objective of this study was to first evaluate the validity of online rTMS-EEG and rTMS-EMG analyses, and second to scrutinize the temporal changes of TEPs and MEPs during rTMS. As rTMS is subject to high inter-individual effect variability, we aimed for single-subject analyses of EEG changes during rTMS. Ten healthy human participants were stimulated with 1,000 pulses of 1 Hz rTMS over the motor cortex, while EEG and EMG were recorded continuously. Validity of MEPs and TEPs measured during rTMS was assessed in sensor and source space. Electrophysiological changes during rTMS were evaluated with model fitting approaches on a group- and single-subject level. TEPs and MEPs appearance during rTMS was consistent with past findings of single pulse experiments. Heterogeneous temporal progressions, fluctuations or saturation effects of brain activity were observed during rTMS depending on the TEP component. Overall, global brain activity increased over the course of stimulation. Single-subject analysis revealed inter-individual temporal courses of global brain activity. The present findings are in favor of dose-response considerations and attempts in personalization of rTMS protocols.

OPM-MEG Measuring Phase Synchronization on Source Time Series: Application in Rhythmic Median Nerve Stimulation

The magnetoencephalogram (MEG) based on array optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) has the potential of replacing conventional cryogenic superconducting quantum interference device. Phase synchronization is a common method for measuring brain oscillations and functional connectivity. Verifying the feasibility and fidelity of OPM-MEG in measuring phase synchronization will help its widespread application in the study of aforementioned neural mechanisms. The analysis method on source-level time series can weaken the influence of instantaneous field spread effect. In this paper, the OPM-MEG was used for measuring the evoked responses of 20Hz rhythmic and arrhythmic median nerve stimulation, and the inter-trial phase synchronization (ITPS) and inter-reginal phase synchronization (IRPS) of primary somatosensory cortex (SI) and secondary somatosensory cortex (SII) were analysed. The results find that under rhythmic condition, the evoked responses of SI and SII show continuous oscillations and the effect of resetting phase. The values of ITPS and IRPS significantly increase at the stimulation frequency of 20Hz and its harmonic of 40Hz, whereas the arrhythmic stimulation does not exhibit this phenomenon. Moreover, in the initial stage of stimulation, the ITPS and IRPS values are significantly higher at Mu rhythm in the rhythmic condition compared to arrhythmic. In conclusion, the results demonstrate the ability of OPM-MEG in measuring phase pattern and functional connectivity on source-level, and may also prove beneficial for the study on the mechanism of rhythmic stimulation therapy for rehabilitation.

Brain mechanisms involved in the perception of emotional gait: A combined magnetoencephalography and virtual reality study

Brain processes associated with emotion perception from biological motion have been largely investigated using point-light displays that are devoid of pictorial information and not representative of everyday life. In this study, we investigated the brain signals evoked when perceiving emotions arising from body movements of virtual pedestrians walking in a community environment. Magnetoencephalography was used to record brain activation in 21 healthy young adults discriminating the emotional gaits (neutral, angry, happy) of virtual male/female pedestrians. Event-related responses in the posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS), fusiform body area (FBA), extrastriate body area (EBA), amygdala (AMG), and lateral occipital cortex (Occ) were examined. Brain signals were characterized by an early positive peak (P1;∼200ms) and a late positive potential component (LPP) comprising of an early (400-600ms), middle (600-1000ms) and late phase (1000-1500ms). Generalized estimating equations revealed that P1 amplitude was unaffected by emotion and gender of pedestrians. LPP amplitude showed a significant emotion X phase interaction in all regions of interest, revealing i) an emotion-dependent modulation starting in pSTS and Occ, followed by AMG, FBA and EBA, and ii) generally enhanced responses for angry vs. other gait stimuli in the middle LPP phase. LPP also showed a gender X phase interaction in pSTS and Occ, as gender affected the time course of the response to emotional gait. Present findings show that brain activation within areas associated with biological motion, form, and emotion processing is modulated by emotional gait stimuli rendered by virtual simulations representative of everyday life.

Rejuvenating classical brain electrophysiology source localization methods with spatial graph Fourier filters for source extents estimation

EEG/MEG source imaging (ESI) aims to find the underlying brain sources to explain the observed EEG or MEG measurement. Multiple classical approaches have been proposed to solve the ESI problem based on different neurophysiological assumptions. To support clinical decision-making, it is important to estimate not only the exact location of the source signal but also the extended source activation regions. Existing methods may render over-diffuse or sparse solutions, which limit the source extent estimation accuracy. In this work, we leverage the graph structures defined in the 3D mesh of the brain and the spatial graph Fourier transform (GFT) to decompose the spatial graph structure into sub-spaces of low-, medium-, and high-frequency basis. We propose to use the low-frequency basis of spatial graph filters to approximate the extended areas of brain activation and embed the GFT into the classical ESI methods. We validated the classical source localization methods with the corresponding improved version using GFT in both synthetic data and real data. We found the proposed method can effectively reconstruct focal source patterns and significantly improve the performance compared to the classical algorithms.

Temporal attention recruits fronto-cingulate cortex to amplify stimulus representations

The human brain receives a continuous stream of input, but it faces significant constraints in its ability to process every item in a sequence of stimuli. Voluntary temporal attention can alleviate these constraints by using information about upcoming stimulus timing to selectively prioritize a task-relevant item over others in a sequence. But the neural mechanisms underlying this ability remain unclear. Here, we manipulated temporal attention to successive stimuli in a two-target temporal cueing task, while controlling for temporal expectation by using fully predictable stimulus timing. We recorded magnetoencephalography (MEG) in human observers and measured the effects of temporal attention on orientation representations of each stimulus using time-resolved multivariate decoding in both sensor and source space. Voluntary temporal attention enhanced the orientation representation of the first target 235-300 milliseconds after target onset. Unlike previous studies that did not isolate temporal attention from temporal expectation, we found no evidence that temporal attention enhanced early visual evoked responses. Instead, and unexpectedly, the primary source of enhanced decoding for attended stimuli in the critical time window was a contiguous region spanning left frontal cortex and cingulate cortex. The results suggest that voluntary temporal attention recruits cortical regions beyond the ventral stream at an intermediate processing stage to amplify the representation of a target stimulus, which may serve to protect it from subsequent interference by a temporal competitor.

Oscillatory and non-oscillatory features of the magnetoencephalic sensorimotor rhythm in Parkinson's disease

Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with changes in neural activity in the sensorimotor alpha and beta bands. Using magnetoencephalography (MEG), we investigated the role of spontaneous neuronal activity within the somatosensory cortex in a large cohort of early- to mid-stage PD patients (N = 78) on Parkinsonian medication and age- and sex-matched healthy controls (N = 60) using source reconstructed resting-state MEG. We quantified features of the time series data in terms of oscillatory alpha power and central alpha frequency, beta power and central beta frequency, and 1/f broadband characteristics using power spectral density. Furthermore, we characterised transient oscillatory burst events in the mu-beta band time-domain signals. We examined the relationship between these signal features and the patients' disease state, symptom severity, age, sex, and cortical thickness. PD patients and healthy controls differed on PSD broadband characteristics, with PD patients showing a steeper 1/f exponential slope and higher 1/f offset. PD patients further showed a steeper age-related decrease in the burst rate. Out of all the signal features of the sensorimotor activity, the burst rate was associated with increased severity of bradykinesia, whereas the burst duration was associated with axial symptoms. Our study shows that general non-oscillatory features (broadband 1/f exponent and offset) of the sensorimotor signals are related to disease state and oscillatory burst rate scales with symptom severity in PD.

Perceptual Grouping in Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Exploratory Magnetoencephalography Study

Visual information is organised according to visual grouping principles. In visual grouping tasks individuals with ASD have shown equivocal performance. We explored neural correlates of Gestalt grouping in individuals with and without ASD. Neuromagnetic activity of individuals with (15) and without (18) ASD was compared during a visual grouping task testing grouping by proximity versus similarity. Individuals without ASD showed stronger evoked responses with earlier peaks in response to both grouping types indicating an earlier neuronal differentiation between grouping principles in individuals without ASD. In contrast, individuals with ASD showed particularly prolonged processing of grouping by similarity suggesting a high demand of neural resources. The neuronal processing differences found could explain less efficient grouping performance observed behaviourally in ASD.
