Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite recent advances in the management of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), patients still experience suboptimal disease control largely due to medication non-adherence and inappropriate use of inhaler. This study evaluates the impact of pharmacist-led intervention in medication adherence and inhaler usage on asthma and COPD control among out-patients attending the premier tertiary hospital in Nigeria. METHOD A quasi-experimental study carried-out among eligible out-patients attending pulmonology clinic of University College Hospital, Ibadan. Baseline questionnaire explored medication adherence using a comprehensive-medication-adherence-assessment-scale (CMAAS-12) developed by the study co-investigators, use of pressurized-metered-dose (pMDI) and Diskus inhalers, as well as asthma/COPD control using validated asthma control test (ACT) and COPD assessment test (CAT). Subsequently, patients were allocated into control (n = 65) or intervention group (n = 65) using odd or even number. Intervention group received 2-month follow-up educational and/or cognitive-behavioural interventions to resolve identified adherence barriers, while control group continued with traditional care. Descriptive statistics, Chi-square and Wilcoxon-signed-ranked tests were used for analysis at p < 0.05. RESULTS Overall, patients with optimal adherence were 11(18.6%) and 16(27.1%), p = 0.132 (control), but 20(33.3%) and 38(63.3%), p < 0.001 (intervention) at baseline and post-baseline, respectively. Specifically, in the intervention group, the identified adherence barriers at baseline were summarized into knowledge (120;40.4%), practical (115;38.7%) and attitudinal (62;20.9%). Patients with correct use of pMDI were 11(21.6%) baseline and 19(36.5%) post-baseline, p = 0.011 (control), but 13(22.8%) and 46(80.7%) respectively, p < 0.001 (intervention). Correct use of Diskus inhaler were 5(50.0%) and 4(40.0%), p = 0.157 (control), but 7(35.0%) and 14(70.0%), p = 0.025 (intervention) at baseline and post-baseline, respectively. Patients with 'well-controlled asthma' were 25(44.6%) and 26 (47.3%), p = 0.025 (control), but 18(35.3%) and 32(60.4%), p < 0.001 (intervention) at baseline and post-baseline, respectively. The COPD-specific health status indicated that 0(0.0%) and 1(14.3%), p = 0.059 (control), but 0(0.0%) and 7(50.0%), p < 0.001 (intervention) at baseline and post-baseline, respectively, belonged to 'low COPD impact'. CONCLUSION Pharmacist-led intervention significantly enhanced medication adherence and appropriate use of inhaler among the intervention cohort, with subsequent significant improvement in asthma control and reduced COPD impact compared with the control group. This underscores the need for active involvement of pharmacists in collaborative management of patients with chronic respiratory diseases in clinical practice. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Short-acting Beta-adrenergic Receptor Agonists (SABA) carry a risk of worse asthma outcomes when overused. Beliefs about asthma controller medications are associated with medication-taking behaviors in older adults, but the association of medication beliefs with SABA use has not been previously examined. We aimed to investigate the association of asthma and controller medication beliefs with SABA use among older patients with asthma. METHODS We performed a cross-sectional analysis of data on adults ≥ 60 years old with moderate to severe asthma in New York City, NY (n = 234). SABA overuse was defined as the average of ≥1 inhalation per day and controller medication adherence as ≥80% of expected inhalations, measured electronically. Illness and medication beliefs were measured using the Brief-Illness Perception Questionnaire and Beliefs about Medications Questionnaire, respectively. The associations of medication-taking behaviors with beliefs were examined in multivariable logistic regression models. RESULTS The mean age was 67.6 ± 6.5 years, 84% were female, 26% were Black and 53% were Hispanic. 35% of participants overused SABA and 21% had adequate controller medication adherence. Overuse of SABA was not significantly associated with controller medication beliefs (Necessity: odds ratio [OR] 1.04, 95% confidence interval [CI] [0.97-1.12], p = 0.28, Concerns: OR 0.95 [95% CI 0.88, 1.03], p = 0.23) or asthma beliefs (OR 1.06 [95% CI 0.99, 1.15], p = 0.11). SABA overuse was also not significantly associated with controller medication adherence (OR 2.20 [95% CI 0.88, 5.51], p = 0.09). CONCLUSIONS SABA overuse was common among older adults with asthma and was not significantly associated with asthma controller medication or illness beliefs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify validated questionnaires to assess medication adherence, and its associated factors, in adult patients with chronic pathologies. METHOD A systematic review of scientific publications that describe validated medication adherence questionnaires in PubMed and Scopus was carried out during May 2022. The search strategy combined the MeSH Heading "Medication adherence" with the keywords: "Questionnaire" and "Validation"; adding "Spanish" to rescue questionnaires in our language. Systematic reviews, meta-analyses or scientific articles with full text available in Spanish or English were selected; published from January 2000 to April 2022; that present the application and validation of a medication adherence questionnaire in adults with chronic pathologies; and publications of the initial validation of a questionnaire, recovered through bibliographic citations of the previously identified publications, even if they are prior to the year 2000. The PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines were followed to represent the search process, inclusion and exclusion of the retrieved publications. RESULTS Ninety-seven records in PubMed and 3 adding "Spanish" were retrieved; in Scopus, 334 records were retrieved and 13 with "Spanish". One hundred-eighteen records were retrieved through bibliographic citations identification. From the analysis of the previous publications, 14 validated questionnaires were identified that assess medication adherence and are applied in English and/or Spanish in adult patients with chronic pathologies. For each questionnaire, the following characteristics were described: name, authors, year of publication, dimensions (barriers and facilitators factors), number and wording of the items, response scale, form of administration, language and pathologies of the initial validation. Of the subsequent validations, only those carried out in English and/or Spanish were presented. So far, 6 questionnaires were validated in Spanish and only for certain chronic pathologies. CONCLUSIONS 14 validated questionnaires were identified, 6 of them were validated in Spanish. They are designed to evaluate medication adherence in a comprehensive manner, being useful to be applied in hospital and community pharmaceutical services. This review provides health professionals with tools to develop and validate their own questionnaire, adapting the wording to the local language and context of the health system.

Abstract
This study sought to quantify the contributions of state-level factors including income inequality, state's legislature political control, and Medicaid expansion in new and established Latinx destination states on Latinx individuals' treated hypertension. Mixed-effects logistic regression analyses were conducted to analyze 2017 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data from 7524 Latinx adults nested within 39 states. Overall, 70% reported being pharmacologically treated for hypertension, and 66% resided in established destination states. Compared with Latinx people in established destination states, Latinx people in new destinations had lower odds of having treated hypertension (odds ratio [OR] = 0.72, 95% CI = 0.54-0.95). Within established Latinx destinations, the odds of treated hypertension were lower in states where legislatures expanded Medicaid than in states that did not expand Medicaid (OR = 0.84, 95% CI = 0.79-0.89). However, after controlling for the effects of individual-level factors, this association was no longer statistically significant. In new Latinx destination states, Medicaid expansion, legislatures' political control, and income inequality were not associated with treated hypertension. The study results highlight the importance of considering both individual- and state-level factors, as the interplay of such factors could hinder the successful implementation of cardiovascular risk reduction interventions.

Abstract
The 5-item Medication Adherence Report Scale (MARS-5) is a reliable and valid questionnaire for evaluating adherence in patients with asthma, hypertension, and diabetes. Validity has not been determined in multiple sclerosis (MS). We aimed to establish criterion validity and reliability of the MARS-5 in persons with MS (PwMS). Our prospective study included PwMS on dimethyl fumarate (DMF). PwMS self-completed the MARS-5 on the same day before baseline and follow-up brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) 3 and 9 months after treatment initiation and were graded as highly and medium adherent upon the 24-cut-off score, established by receiver operator curve analysis. Health outcomes were represented by relapse occurrence from the 1st DMF dispense till follow-up brain MRI and radiological progression (new T2 MRI lesions and quantitative analysis) between baseline and follow-up MRI. Criterion validity was established by association with the Proportion of Days Covered (PDC), new T2 MRI lesions, and Beliefs in Medicines questionnaire (BMQ). The reliability evaluation included internal consistency and the test-retest method. We included 40 PwMS (age 37.6 ± 9.9 years, 75% women), 34 were treatment-naive. No relapses were seen during the follow-up period but quantitative MRI analysis showed new T2 lesions in 6 PwMS. The mean (SD) MARS-5 score was 23.1 (2.5), with 24 PwMS graded as highly adherent. The higher MARS-5 score was associated with higher PDC (b = 0.027, P<0.001, 95% CI: (0.0134-0.0403)) and lower medication concerns (b = -1.25, P<0.001, 95% CI: (-1.93-(-0,579)). Lower adherence was associated with increased number (P = 0.00148) and total volume of new T2 MRI lesions (P = 0.00149). The questionnaire showed acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach α = 0.72) and moderate test-retest reliability (r = 0.62, P < 0.0001, 95% CI: 0.33-0.79). The MARS-5 was found to be valid and reliable for estimating medication adherence and predicting medication concerns in persons with MS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The significant role of depression in influencing medication beliefs, which are pivotal cognitive factors that strongly influence medication adherence, has been established. Poor adherence to asthma-controlled medication poses an significant barrier to achieving optimal asthma management. OBJECTIVE To explore the potential mediating effects of medication beliefs on the relationship between depressive symptoms and medication adherence in patients with asthma. METHODS Demographic and clinical characteristics, depressive symptoms, medication adherence, and medication beliefs were collected using questionnaires. Structural equation modeling, was utilized to model medication beliefs as mediators in the relationship between depressive symptoms and medication adherence. Bootstrapping was performed to analyze the mediation- and contrast-specific indirect effects of the two medication beliefs. RESULTS Among the patients who participated in the study, 29.6 % with depressive symptoms were more prone to poor adherence and exhibited skepticism toward asthma medications. Depression had a direct effect (direct effect = -0.275, 95%CI: -0.369 to -0.190) and an indirect effect on adherence mediated by medication beliefs (indirect effect = -0.168, 95%CI: -0.224 to -0.121). The specific mediation effect of concern belief was stronger than that of necessity belief (difference = -0.076, 95%CI: -0.132 to -0.029). CONCLUSION Depressive symptoms have a direct impact on medication adherence as well as an indirect effect mediated by beliefs about medication, particularly concerns belief.

Abstract
Non-adherence to medications has many deleterious effects including poor treatment outcomes, increased economic burden, increased morbidity, hospitalization rate, health care utilization, productivity loss, and mortality. Therefore, this review aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of medication adherence among asthmatic adults in 4 African countries. Primary studies were extensively searched from databases such as PubMed, HINARI, Cochrane Library, CINHALand, Google Scholar, and Google search engines. After screening and assessing the quality of studies, data were extracted using a checklist. Heterogeneity was assessed using forest plot, Chocran's Q Test and I2. The random effects meta-analysis model was employed to pool the prevalence of medication adherence among adult asthmatic patients in Africa. Sub-group analysis and meta-regression were performed to identify the sources of heterogeneity. Publication bias was assessed using funnel plots with Egger's test. A sensitivity analysis was performed to assess the influence of individual studies on the overall estimate. The review was performed among 16 studies of which 14 were cross-sectional with a total of 4019 participants. The pooled random effects prevalence of adherence to medications among adult patients with asthma in Africa was 39% (95% CI: 32, 47; p < 0.001) with a heterogeneity (I2 = 94.82, p < 0.001). The pooled prevalence of medication adherence among adult asthmatic patients in Africa is low. Researchers should conduct further multicenter longitudinal studies by using objective methods of adherence measurement.

Abstract
We aimed to examine the effects of framed mobile messages (messages emphasizing losses or gains because of a behavior) on young adults' beliefs about their daily Inhaled Corticosteroids (ICS), intentions to take their ICS, adherence, and asthma control. College students (18-29 years) who owned a mobile phone and had a diagnosis of asthma with a prescription for an ICS were recruited. Participants (n = 43) were randomized to receive either gain- or loss-framed mobile messages three times per week for eight weeks. Engagement rates with messages were calculated. Outcomes included beliefs, intentions, adherence, and asthma control. Data collection was performed at baseline, week 4, and week 8. Mixed-design ANOVA assessed whether outcomes improved differentially from baseline to week eight between gain- and loss-framed groups. Twenty-two participants were randomly assigned to the gain-framed group and 21 to the loss-framed group. There was a 100% retention rate. The engagement rate with the text messages was 85.9%. There was a significant difference in participants' intentions to take medication and asthma control from baseline. There were no significant changes in other outcomes from baseline. There was no difference in changes in all outcomes between participants receiving gain- versus loss-framed messages. Framed mobile messages improved young adults' asthma control and intentions to take their medication as prescribed.

Abstract
Introduction Poor asthma control in adolescents is partly attributed to inadequate asthma education for self-management. This study is set to determine the effectiveness of the "KmAsthma" self-management app in improving the control of asthma among adolescents in a low-resource setting. Methods The two-arm 6-month cluster randomized controlled trial, will aim at enrolling 120 day scholars aged 12-19 years in secondary schools with a clinician's diagnosis and self-reported uncontrolled asthma in Kampala City Uganda. The primary endpoint of asthma control will be measured as a change in mean Asthma Control Test (ACT) scores. Asthma quality of life, adherence to medications, and self-efficacy will also be assessed. The iMprovIng the ContROl of aSthma (MICROS) study will employ the "KmAsthma" app for self-management education. The intervention group will receive the app on their smartphones and training on its eight sections: the profile, asthma history, goals, inspirations, reminders, connect, information about asthma, and emergency support. Participants will navigate these sections to set asthma control goals, schedule medication reminders, log daily symptoms, and receive guidance for attacks. All participants will be encouraged to seek routine care. A study nurse will follow up with each participant via the phone six weeks post-intervention. The MICROS study was approved by the Makerere University School of Medicine Research and Ethics Committee and the Uganda National Council of Science and Technology. This protocol is registered on Clinicaltrials.gov (NCT05850806). Conclusion The MICROS study will provide comprehensive insights into how effective a mHealth intervention can be an aid for adolescents in a low-resource setting in managing their asthma. The findings of this study will contribute to filling the gap leading to unsatisfactory asthma control in adolescents.

Abstract
There is limited research that identifies and examines multi-level barriers to medication adherence among adults with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD); Identify multi-level barriers to medication adherence among adults with SCD; and Examine the relationship between multi-level barriers and medication adherence levels. A cross-sectional study included 130 adults (ages ≥ 18 years old) living with SCD who receive treatment/care from one of the 10 adult SCD clinics within the Networking California for sickle cell care initiative. Study measures included the medication adherence report scale (Professor Rob Horne), Beliefs about Medicine Questionnaire (Professor Rob Horne), and patient reported outcomes measurement information system. Participants reported barriers to medication adherence across 3 levels: Community-level barriers (e.g., COVID-19 pandemic); Institutional-level barriers (e.g., bad experiences with the health care system); and Individual-level barriers (e.g., beliefs and depression severity). Depression severity and patient concerns about SCD medication were inversely correlated with medication adherence (rs = -0.302, P < .001; rs = -0.341, P < .001 respectively). Patient beliefs about the necessity of SCD medication were insignificantly correlated with medication adherence (rs = 0.065, P = .464). Medication adherence was higher among patients who had fewer adherence barriers than multiple adherence barriers (Median medication adherence: fewer barriers = 22 vs multiple barrier = 20.50, P = .085), suggesting clinical significance although statistically insignificant. Identifying multi-level adherence barriers and examining their relationship with medication adherence will help develop targeted public health strategies to promote improved medication adherence and wellness among adults with SCD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Suboptimal adherence to inhaled corticosteroid in asthma is a worryingly prevalent yet modifiable factor in uncontrolled disease. Several objective measures of adherence exist, but they are time-consuming. The use of patient-reported adherence measures (PRAMs) could therefore offer a time-efficient pragmatic approach to assessing adherence in clinical practice and potentially the appropriate interventions to improve it. OBJECTIVES To identify the PRAMs available for asthma and assess their psychometric quality, accessibility, and usefulness in clinical practice, as well as to provide recommendations for clinicians based on these findings. METHODS We conducted a systematic review of six databases. Articles included in this study were English language, full-text, original, asthma-specific PRAMs or development/validation studies of a generic PRAM that had been administered to adults with asthma, investigated inhaled corticosteroid adherence in adults (aged 18 years and older), and assessed at least one COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments measurement property. RESULTS We included 15 PRAM developmental and/or validation studies in this systematic review. Studies evaluated a range of COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments measurement properties, but none evaluated all of them. CONCLUSIONS Based on this review, we recommend that when a PRAM is used, it should be the Test of the Adherence to Inhalers. However, the Adherence Starts with Knowledge-20 and Adherence Starts with Knowledge-12 may also be useful. Our results highlight the need for PRAM developers to assess questionnaires robustly and provide guidance for clinicians regarding how to act on PRAM answers by developing materials such as decision support tool kits.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Poor adherence to daily inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) is an important factor contributing to asthma morbidity. Assessing adherence in clinical settings using self-reported adherence often overestimates actual adherence. Electronic monitoring devices (EMDs) are objective means of assessing adherence, but are not routinely used in practice. Here, we aimed to establish adherence rates to ICS using EMDs in an inner-city, minority population in the Bronx, NY, and to compare two methods of self-reported adherence with EMD-measured adherence. METHODS Patients with physician-confirmed persistent asthma and daily ICS prescription were recruited. Self-reported adherence to ICS was measured by parental report for children and self-report for adults and the Medication Adherence Report Scale for Asthma (MARS-A). Two weeks after enrollment, EMD data were accessed for analysis. Daily adherence was calculated based on the number of puffs actuated per day as captured by EMD divided by the prescribed number of puffs. RESULTS 41 children and 40 adults participated. Median EMD-measured ICS adherence was 41% (children) and 43% (adults). This was significantly lower than the median self-reported adherence (100% for children, p < 0.001; 100% for adults, p < 0.001). MARS-A score in children did not correlate with EMD adherence data (p = 0.18), while in adults, this correlation tended to be more consistent (p = 0.07). CONCLUSIONS Adherence to daily ICS as measured using EMD is low in this population. In both adults and children, self-reported adherence was a poor indicator of true adherence. Further efforts using objective measures of medication adherence for patients with high asthma morbidity may be warranted to guide therapeutic decisions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Under-perception of airflow limitation is more common in older adults with asthma and may lead to under-reporting of asthma symptoms. Asthma management self-efficacy is linked with better asthma control and quality of life (QoL). We sought to examine asthma and medication beliefs as a mediator in the relationship between both under-perception and self-efficacy with asthma outcomes. METHODS This cross-sectional study recruited participants with asthma ≥60 years from hospital-affiliated practices in East Harlem and the Bronx, New York. Perception of airflow limitation was measured for 6 weeks by having participants enter peak expiratory flow (PEF) estimates into an electronic peak flow meter followed by PEF blows. We used validated instruments to assess asthma and medication beliefs, asthma management self-efficacy, asthma control, and QoL. Asthma self-management behaviors (SMB) were quantified by electronic and self-report measures of inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) adherence and observation of inhaler technique. RESULTS The sample comprised 331 participants (51% Hispanic, 27% Black, 84% female). Beliefs mediated the relationship between greater under-perception and better self-reported asthma control (β = -0.08, p = .02) and better asthma QoL (β =0.12, p = .02). Higher self-efficacy was also associated with better reported asthma control (β = -0.10, p = .006) and better asthma QoL (β =0.13, p = .01) in this indirect effect through beliefs. Accurate perception of airflow limitation was associated with higher adherence to SMB (β = 0.29, p = .003). CONCLUSIONS Less threatening asthma beliefs may be maladaptive in under-perception of airflow limitation by contributing to under-reporting of asthma symptoms, but adaptive in the context of higher self-efficacy and better asthma control.

Abstract
Purpose Long-acting inhalers are the mainstay maintenance therapy for stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) management. The aim of this study was to assess adherence to inhalers among adults with COPD in China and to develop strategies to improve adherence for the next step. Patients and Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 246 adult patients with COPD using long-acting inhalers to explore different demographic characteristics, disease characteristics and medication regimens. Adherence to inhalers was assessed using the Medication Adherence Report Scale (MARS). Results Among the 246 patients included in the present study, 93 (37.80%) had good adherence, while 153 (62.20%) had poor adherence. From the comparison of patients with good and poor adherence, we found that the course of disease and education background had a significant effect on adherence (p < 0.05). Among the LAMA therapy group, inhaled tiotropium bromide spray (Ingelheim am Rhein, Germany) with active release technology had better adherence than inhaled tiotropium bromide powder (Ingelheim am Rhein, Germany) (p < 0.05). Moreover, COPD patients with good adherence had better pulmonary function and fewer moderate or severe exacerbations in the past year (p < 0.05). Conclusion The factors affecting the use of inhalers in patients with stable COPD are complicated. Medical staff should select appropriate inhalers according to the patient's disease status and duration and provide medication education to improve adherence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inhaled corticosteroids (CSs) are the backbone of asthma treatment, improving quality of life, exacerbation rates, and mortality. Although effective for most, a subset of patients with asthma experience CS-resistant disease despite receiving high-dose medication. OBJECTIVE We sought to investigate the transcriptomic response of bronchial epithelial cells (BECs) to inhaled CSs. METHODS Independent component analysis was performed on datasets, detailing the transcriptional response of BECs to CS treatment. The expression of these CS-response components was examined in 2 patient cohorts and investigated in relation to clinical parameters. Supervised learning was used to predict BEC CS responses using peripheral blood gene expression. RESULTS We identified a signature of CS response that was closely correlated with CS use in patients with asthma. Participants could be separated on the basis of CS-response genes into groups with high and low signature expression. Patients with low expression of CS-response genes, particularly those with a severe asthma diagnosis, showed worse lung function and quality of life. These individuals demonstrated enrichment for T-lymphocyte infiltration in endobronchial brushings. Supervised machine learning identified a 7-gene signature from peripheral blood that reliably identified patients with poor CS-response expression in BECs. CONCLUSIONS Loss of CS transcriptional responses within bronchial epithelium was related to impaired lung function and poor quality of life, particularly in patients with severe asthma. These individuals were identified using minimally invasive blood sampling, suggesting these findings may enable earlier triage to alternative treatments.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Chronic disorders commonly require long-term therapies. Medication non-adherence can cause major morbidity and mortality in chronic illness individuals, as well as increase the financial burden on the healthcare system. It is considered that patients who adhere to their treatment may improve their quality of life (QoL). There is a scarcity of updated comprehensive data on medication adherence among Saudi patients with neurological disorders. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the medication adherence status among individuals with neurological conditions and its association with QoL. METHOD A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted. The study included subjects individuals who have neurological conditions aged at least 18 from different regions of Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire measured medication adherence by using the 10-item version of the Medication Adherence Report Scale (MARS-10, ©Professor Rob Horne). The QoL was measured by employing validated Euro Quality of Life 5-dimension scale (EQ-5D). RESULTS A total of 370 participants were included. Respondents aged 18 to 35 years represented 62.4% of the sample. More than half of the participants were females (65.7%). The most frequently reported chronic conditions were migraine (29.2%), epilepsy (20.8%), and multiple sclerosis (20.5%). The reliability of the EQ-5D questionnaire was acceptable (Cronbach's alpha = 0.764). In general, more than half of the participants indicated that had problems due to pain/discomfort (60.3%) and anxiety/depression (62.2%). The most common pattern of non-adherence was taking the medication only when a patient needed it followed by avoiding taking the medication as possible. Non-adherence to medications was less prevalent among participants with epilepsy (68.8%) and multiple sclerosis (65.8%). On the other hand, medication adherence was higher among respondents with migraine compared to participants without the condition (86.1% vs 73.7%, p = 0.009). A significantly lower proportion of participants who had some or extreme problems with self-care were non-adherent to medications compared to those who had no problems (68.1% vs 80.3%, respectively, p = 0.016). Results of the regression analysis showed that participants with epilepsy and multiple sclerosis were less likely to be non-adherence to medications. Furthermore, respondents with moderate and severe problems in self-care were less likely to be non-adherent. CONCLUSION It was found that more than half of the participants had problems regarding their QoL due to pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression. The most prevalent pattern of non-adherence was taking the medication only when needed. Participants with epilepsy and multiple sclerosis were less likely to be non-adherent to medications. Furthermore, respondents with moderate and severe problems in self-care were less likely to be non-adherent. We recommend serial studies on the issue should be conducted to gather more evidence regarding this topic.

Abstract
Background Patient beliefs about their asthma and its treatment may contribute to overreliance on short-acting β2-agonist (SABA) therapy, leading to increased risk for potentially life-threatening exacerbations. The SABA Reliance Questionnaire (SRQ) is a validated tool for evaluating patients beliefs about SABAs that may lead to overreliance and overuse. Objective Our aim was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the SRQ. Methods This was an observational, cross-sectional, single-country questionnaire validation study in adults with asthma. Reliability (ordinal α) and validity (convergent and discriminant) of SRQ were evaluated. Concurrent validity was assessed with the Beliefs about Medication Questionnaire, the Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire for Medication, and a visual analog scale item to assess patients' perceptions of the importance of their reliever inhaler. Discriminant validity was assessed through differences in mean SRQ sum score between patients with high adherence to inhaled corticosteroids and those with low adherence, as measured by the Medication Adherence Report Scale-9 and the Test of Adherence to Inhalers. Results The Spanish-SRQ exhibited good psychometric properties among 131 patients with asthma. Internal consistency was confirmed with an ordinal α of 0.85. All 5 items were useful for measuring patients' beliefs about SABAs that may lead them to be overreliant on SABAs. Concurrent validity with the Beliefs about Medication Questionnaire, Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire for Medication, and a visual analog scale item assessing patients' perceptions of the importance of their reliever inhaler was demonstrated. Conclusion The Spanish version of the SRQ is a valid tool for evaluating potential overreliance on SABAs in Spanish-speaking patients to enable early intervention and support.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigated the influence of illness perceptions and other risk factors related to poor asthma control and quality of life in adult outpatients with asthma in China. METHODS Patients with a confirmed asthma diagnosis were recruited from the outpatient clinic at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University in Shanghai. Sociodemographic, psychological, and asthma related variables were assessed in all participants. Patients' illness perceptions, medication adherence, asthma control, and quality of life were assessed using validated questionnaires, such as the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire, Medication Adherence Rating Scale (MARS-A), the Asthma Control Test, and the Mini Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire. Multiple linear regressions and logistic regressions were used to examine the associations between illness perceptions, medication adherence behaviors, and disease outcome (i.e., asthma control and quality of life). RESULTS A total of two hundred thirty-one (231) outpatients with asthma were included in this cross-sectional study, 80 of whom (34.6%) had asthma that was uncontrolled. Patients who perceived their life (β = - 0.197, p < 0.001) and emotions (β = - 0.294, p < 0.001) as severely affected by the illness were more likely to have a lower quality of life, findings that were statistically significant. Also, patients who believed they had a higher degree of personal control over their illness (β = 0.333, p < 0.001), and had better medication adherence (β = 0.250, p < 0.001) were found to have a better quality of life. CONCLUSION Our study indicated that illness perceptions and medication adherence have a significant impact on disease outcome. Both of these factors should be considered when determining the best health care practices or constructing a predictive intervention model for patients with uncontrolled asthma.

Abstract
Electronic monitoring devices (EMDs) have been trialled in interventions to improve inhaled corticosteroid adherence and clinical outcomes. This study sought to understand the perceptions and experiences of EMD end-users. Participants recruited into a six-month EMD study were invited to a semi-structured interview. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using the framework approach. Twenty-eight participants (68% female, median age 47) were interviewed. Individuals described feeling responsible for their asthma control. Recent attacks motivated a desire to maintain control. Study participation led to increased awareness of asthma status and medication use. Several individuals were open to integrating digital monitoring data with other mHealth inputs, perceiving the potential to enhance communication with clinicians and empower self-management. Openness to data sharing was tied to expectations of transparent data use. Data supported integrating beliefs and habit formation to achieve behaviour change. There was a willingness for an integrated, platform-based approach to digital self-management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Various studies have found that medication adherence is generally low among patients with asthma, and that the complexity of the regimen may be a potential factor. However, there is no information on the complexity of the regimen and its relationship to adherence and asthma outcomes in Ethiopian asthma patients. Therefore, this study assessed how complex medication regimens affected medication adherence and asthma control in patients with asthma. METHOD From February 1 to May 30, 2022, a multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted in three public referral hospitals in northwestern Ethiopia. The Medication Complexity Index (MRCI), a 65-item validated instrument, was used to represent the complexity of medication regimens The Medication Adherence Rating Scale for Asthma (MARS-A) was used to assess medication adherence, and the ACT was used to measure the level of asthma control. The association between predictor and outcome variables was determined using multivariable logistic regression analysis. P-values of < 0.05 were declared as a significant association. RESULT Patients with asthma (n = 396) who met the inclusion criteria were included in the final analysis. About 21.2% and 24.5% of the participants had high asthma-specific MRCI and patient-level MRCI, respectively. The majority (84.4%) of the participants did not adhere to their medication, and 71% of the participants were classified as having uncontrolled asthma. According to the result of the multivariable analysis, moving from a high asthma-specific MRCI to a moderate asthma MRCI enhances the likelihood of medication adherence by 2.51 times (AOR = 2.51, 95%CI: (1.27, 7.71). Likewise, patients who have low asthma MRCI were four times more likely to adhere to the medication compared with high asthma MRCI (AOR = 3.80, 95%CI: (2.0, 11.1). Similarly, patients having low patient-level MRCI were eight times more likely their asthma level had been controlled (AOR = 7.84, 95%CI: 1.46 to 21.3) and patients who had moderate patient-level MRCI were three times (AOR = 2.83, 95%CI: 1.05 to 8.25) more controlled asthma compared with patients who had high patient level MRCI. CONCLUSION The majority of asthma patients had low and moderate complexity of MRCI. Patients with low and moderate regimen complexity demonstrated high adherence and had well-controlled asthma. Therefore, future researchers should consider MRCI as one factor for adherence and asthma control levels.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Adherence to anti-asthmatic medications plays a vital role in enhancing an asthma patient's quality of life and prognosis. However, in Ethiopia, the level of adherence and contributing factors were rarely studied. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the level of adherence to anti-asthma medications and associated factors among adult asthmatic patients in Eastern Ethiopia. METHOD Institutional based cross-sectional study was conducted at six governmental hospitals found in Eastern Ethiopia. A total of 320 asthma patients aged 18 years and above and using asthma medicines for at least 12 months were involved. An interviewer based structured questionnaires were used to collect the data. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were carried out using IBM SPSS version 22 (SPSS, Chicago, IL). The Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) with 95% Confidence Interval (CI) was used to determine the strength of association between independent variables and outcome variable. Variables with a p-value of ≤ 0.05 were considered statistically significant. RESULT Of the 320 asthma patients that participated in the study, 109(34.1%:28.8-39.1%) of them had good adherence to anti-asthmatic medications. Being a housewife (AOR = 4.265, 95%CI: 1.333, 13.653), having good knowledge about asthma (AOR = 2.921, 95%CI (1.472, 5.795), positive attitude towards asthma (AOR = 3.129, 95%CI: 1.555, 6.293), and use of oral corticosteroid drugs (AOR = 1.967, 95%CI: 1.008, 3.841) were factors positively associated with good adherence to anti-asthmatic medications. Participants on treatment for 2-3 years (AOR = .295, 95%CI: 0.099, 0.873), and those on medication for ≥ 4 years (AOR = 0.229, 95%CI: 0.079, 0.664) were 70.5% and 77.1% times less likely to adhere to anti-asthmatic medications respectively. CONCLUSION The current study signified a low level of adherence to anti-asthmatic medications. Participant's characteristics and medication related factors were significantly associated with good adherence to anti-asthmatic medications. Health education and advice during follow-up for asthma patients is crucial for better adherence.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The study was aimed to determine the prevalence and contributing factors of insomnia among patients with bronchial asthma. DESIGN A multicentre cross-sectional survey was used. SETTING This study was carried out from January to March 2022 in three university comprehensive specialised hospitals in Northwest Ethiopia. PARTICIPANTS 422 patients with bronchial asthma were approached of which 93.8% completed the survey. OUTCOMES The degree of asthma control and the severity of insomnia were evaluated using the Asthma Control Test and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), respectively. The characteristics of the participants were presented, arranged and summarised using descriptive statistical analysis, and correlations between predictors and outcome variables were examined using logistic regression. The cut-off point was a p value of 0.05. RESULTS Participants' ages ranged from 33.6 to 65.2 years on average. Just under three-fourths (71.4%) of the participants had at least one episode of insomnia as per the ISI measurement (score ≥10). The odds of insomnia episodes were about 5.4 and 1.93 times higher in patients with uncontrolled asthma and partially controlled asthma status, with adjusted OR (AOR)=5.4 (95% CI 4.4 to 6.79, p<0.001) and AOR=1.93 (95% CI 1.21 to 4.11, p<0.001), respectively. CONCLUSION Insomnia episodes were substantially higher in bronchial patients with asthma. Insomnia is accompanied by asthma severity, and uncontrolled asthma and partially controlled asthma status are the two most determining factors for experiencing sleep disturbance. Furthermore, a prospective follow-up study must determine the real association found between insomnia and asthma control.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Asthma is a major public health problem worldwide. Despite various attempts, it is still uncontrolled in most parts of the world. Moreover, it is contributing to the national and global burden of non-communicable diseases. Studying factors associated with uncontrolled asthma in different parts of Ethiopia is crucial to control the disease and improving the quality of life of asthmatic patients. Thus, this study aimed to determine the factors associated with uncontrolled asthma among adult asthmatic patients in Eastern Ethiopia. METHODS Facility-based cross-sectional study was employed from 1st October 2020 to 30th January 2021. A total of 416 adult asthmatic patients participated in the study from six hospitals follow-up clinics. Asthma control test was used to assess the participants level of asthma control and a score of ⩽19 were regarded to have uncontrolled asthma. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 24. Bivariable and multivariable analyses were carried out to identify factors associated with uncontrolled asthma and variables with a p value of less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant. RESULT The prevalence of uncontrolled asthma was 66.1 % (95% confidence interval: 61.5-70.4). Not attending scheduled medical follow-up (adjusted odds ratio: 2.54; 95% confidence interval: 1.28-4.99), poor knowledge about asthma (adjusted odds ratio = 4.59; 95% confidence interval: 2.01-10.51), negative attitude toward asthma (adjusted odds ratio = 3.72; 95% confidence interval: 1.83-7.59), and poor adherence to medications (adjusted odds ratio = 2.53; 95% confidence interval: 1.25-5.13) were significantly associated with uncontrolled asthma. CONCLUSION In this study, the prevalence of uncontrolled asthma was considerably high. Not attending scheduled medical follow-up, poor knowledge about asthma, negative attitude toward asthma, and poor adherence to anti-asthma medications were associated with uncontrolled asthma. Therefore, it is crucial to focus on increasing the patients' level of awareness about asthma control, improving medication adherence, and avoiding triggering factors.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION About 70% of patients with asthma and/or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) use their inhaled medication incorrectly, leading to reduced disease control, higher healthcare use and costs. Adequate guidance from the pharmacy team from first dispense onwards can benefit patients in the long run. We propose an intervention ('On TRACk') to improve medication adherence and inhaler technique of adult patients with asthma and/or COPD. This intervention focuses on training pharmacy technicians (PTs) in patient-centred communication and inhalation instruction skills. In addition, patients are actively involved in refill consultations at the pharmacy. The aim of this study is to improve inhaler technique and better inhaled medication adherence among patients with asthma and/or COPD. This paper describes the study protocol. METHODS AND ANALYSIS A cluster randomised controlled trial (RCT) with an intervention and control group of 15 pharmacies each will be conducted. Per intervention pharmacy, two PTs will be trained online. Each PT will include five patients who will prepare their second and third dispense counselling sessions by selecting three topics they wish to discuss. Pharmacies in the control cluster provide usual care. In total, 300 patients (150 per group) will be included. Up to 12 months after inclusion, patients complete 3-monthly follow-up questionnaires. Both a process evaluation and a cost-effectiveness analysis will be performed alongside the trial. Trial effectiveness on the patient level will be evaluated after the 12-month follow-up period.Patient data will be collected through questionnaires and pharmacy refill data. Patients' inhaler technique will be visually assessed by PTs. Semistructured interviews with PTs and patients will be conducted regarding implementation and fidelity. Direct and indirect health costs will be collected to assess cost-effectiveness.The primary outcome is adherence to inhalation maintenance medication measured with pharmacy refill data. Secondary outcomes are inhaler technique, persistence, patients' attitudes towards medication, self-efficacy in medication use and communication with their PTs. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION The study was approved by the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Ethics Committee (number: 2020.358). Results will be presented at (inter)national conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals. If proven to be (cost-)effective, the intervention should be considered for reimbursement and implementation in Dutch community pharmacies. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER NL9750.

Abstract
Background Asthma is a major public health challenge and is characterized by recurrent attacks of breathlessness and wheezing that vary in severity and frequency from person to person. Asthma control is an important measure of health outcomes of the patients with asthma and reflecting the impact of an illness and its treatment from the patient’s perspective. Therefore, this study assessed the asthma control levels and their determinants among adults living with asthma in selected public referral hospitals in northwestern Ethiopia. Materials and method A multicenter institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted in North-western Ethiopia, from October to December 2021. A systematic random sampling technique was employed to recruit the study participants. Bi-variable and multivariable ordinal logistic regression was used to determine the independent predictors of asthma control levels. A p-value of < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Result A total of 409 patients were included in the final analysis. Asthma was controlled by 28.9% with 95%CI (24.7, 33.5) people who have asthma. Regarding the potential predictor of asthma control level, being male (AOR = 6.5, 95%CI (1.28, 32.44), Married (AOR = 3.62, 95%CI (1.28, 10.27), healthcare provider adherence to guideline usage (AOR = 8.4,95%CI (2.7, 26) and non-fuel users (AOR = 6.0, 95%CI (1.5, 22.5) were variables that increase asthma control. However, non-adherent to medication (AOR = 0.16, 95%CI (0.059, 0.48), low level of patient enablement (AOR = 0.19, (95%CI) (0.08, 0.49) and poor relationship with healthcare provider (AOR = 0.024,95%CI (0.02, 0.23) were variables that significantly decreased asthma control level. Conclusion The findings indicated that asthma control remains suboptimal in a large proportion of patients with asthma in the study setting. Socio-demographic, clinical, healthcare-related, and medication-related variables were significantly associated with asthma control. Therefore, our study highlights multifaceted interventions, including comprehensive asthma education along with an integrated treatment plan to improve asthma control and quality of life.

Abstract
Medication Adherence Report Scale questionnaire (MARS-5) and the Beliefs about Medication Questionnaire-specific (BMQ-specific) are well known tools to assess adherence to medication and beliefs of chronic patients. However, validated Arabic versions of such questionnaires are lacking. We aim to validate the Arabic versions of BMQ-specific and MARS-5. In this study, a cross-sectional study was performed between November 2019 and March 2020. Participants were reached from secondary and tertiary care clinics in Jordan. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor analysis (CFA) were conducted to validate the employed questionnaires on the tested sample. The internal consistency of the questionnaires was assessed by calculating Cronbach's alpha, and Cronbach's alpha if item is deleted. A total of 485 patients who met the inclusion criteria were recruited. The mean age of the participants was 57.14 years (22-82 years); and 39% of the participants were older than 65 years. The most common chronic diseases reported by participants were hypertension and diabetes mellitus, 35.7 and 32.2% respectively. EFA suggested two-factor model for BMQ-specific and one-factor model for MARS-5 which was confirmed by CFA analyses. The resulted Cronbach's alphas of the questionnaires ranged from 0.89-0.93. Both analyses showed that the Arabic versions of both MARS-5 and BMQ-specific are valid and can be used for the suggested study population. Further validation-based research may enhance the transcultural adaptation of such questionnaires.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cognitive impairment (CI) is highly prevalent in elderly asthmatics and is associated with worse asthma self-management (SM) and outcomes. CI may also explain why older adults may under-perceive asthma symptoms. We hypothesized that CI would be associated with low medication adherence and asthma symptom under-perception (ASP). We also hypothesized that ASP would mediate the relationship between CI and medication adherence. METHODS Participants of this longitudinal cohort study were asthmatics (N = 334) ≥60 years (51% Hispanic, 25% Black). Cognitive measures assessed general cognition, attention, processing speed, executive functioning, memory, and language. Measures of SM were self-reported and electronically measured adherence to controller medications. ASP was assessed for 6 weeks by participants entering estimates of peak expiratory flow (PEF) into a programmable peak flow meter, followed by PEF blows. Participants were blinded to actual PEF values. Percentage of time that participants were in the over-perception zone was calculated as an average. RESULTS In regression analyses, those with impairments in memory and general cognition had lower odds ratios (OR) for self-reported non-adherence (OR: 0.96, 95% CI 0.93 - 0.98 & OR: 0.90, 95% CI 0.83 - 0.96, respectively). CI was not associated with electronically measured non-adherence or ASP. In structural equation modeling, while CI was associated with adherence (β = 0.04, SE = 0.021, p = 0.04), ASP did not mediate this relationship. CONCLUSIONS While results confirmed the importance of cognition in asthma SM, these findings were not linked to ASP. Future analyses are needed to understand the role of confounding factors.

Abstract
Background Asthma is a common airways disease with significant morbidity and mortality in all ages. Studies of pediatric asthma control and its determinants yielded variable results across settings. However, there is paucity of data on asthma control and its factors in Ethiopian children. We aimed to assess the level of asthma control and the related factors in children attending pediatric respiratory clinics at three tertiary hospitals in Addis Ababa.
Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study from March 1 to August 30, 2020 using standardized questionnaires and review of patient’s charts. Data was analyzed using SPSS software for window version 26. Results A total of 105 children (56.2% male) were included in the study. The mean age (± SD) and age at Asthma diagnosis (± SD) were 6 (± 3.3) and 4 (± 2.8) respectively. Uncontrolled asthma was present in 33 (31%) of children. Comorbidities (Atopic dermatitis and allergic Rhinitis (AOR = 4.56; 95% CI 1.1–18.70; P = 0.035), poor adherence to controller medications (AOR = 3.23; 95% CI 1.20–10.20; P = 0.045), inappropriate inhaler technique (AOR = 3.48; 95% CI 1.18–10.3; P = 0.024), and lack of specialized care (AOR = 4.72; 95% CI 1.13–19.80; P = 0.034) were significantly associated with suboptimal asthma control. Conclusion One-third of children attending pediatric respiratory clinics in Addis Ababa had uncontrolled Asthma. Treatment of comorbidities, training of appropriate inhaler techniques, optimal adherence to controllers, and proper organization of clinics should be emphasized to improve asthma control among children.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Asthma is an incurable, lifelong condition that places children at increased risk for exacerbation, hospitalisation and school absences. Most paediatric asthma interventions target parents alone and are overly prescriptive. Improving Asthma Care Together (IMPACT) is a novel shared management system comprised of a mobile health (mHealth) application, symptom watch and tailored health intervention that pairs parent and child together as an asthma management team. IMPACT helps families monitor asthma status, tailor asthma management strategies and facilitate intentional transition of asthma management to the child. The purpose of this study is to determine the feasibility, acceptability and preliminary efficacy of the IMPACT intervention. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This pilot randomised controlled trial will recruit 60 children with asthma (7-11 years) and one parent. All parent-child dyads will complete data collection sessions at baseline, postintervention and follow-up. Dyads randomised to the intervention group (IMPACT) will complete the 8-week intervention comprised of weekly activities including symptom monitoring, goal setting and progress monitoring. Dyads randomised to the control group will receive usual care but then be provided access to IMPACT at the end of the study. Feasibility will be measured by the proportion of eligible dyads enrolled and retained. Acceptability of IMPACT will be assessed using the Acceptability of Intervention Measure, the System Usability Scale and a semistructured interview. Preliminary efficacy is determined based on change in primary outcomes, parent-reported and child-reported asthma responsibility and asthma self-efficacy scores, from baseline. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This study has been approved by the University of Washington Institutional Review Board; study ID: STUDY00010461. Participants gave informed consent to participate in the study before taking part. Study results will be disseminated in peer-reviewed journals and scientific conferences. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Accurately assessing asthma medication usage among low-income, urban, African American children is essential to reduce asthma health disparities. The purpose of this study was to examine the factor structure of the five-item Medication Adherence Report Scale (MARS), in a sample of caregivers of low-income, urban, African American youth with poorly controlled asthma. METHOD Using baseline data from a randomized clinical trial evaluating the efficacy of an environmental control educational intervention, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to ascertain the MARS factor structure. Construct validity was assessed using a regression model inclusive of caregiver-reported medication adherence, Asthma Medication Ratio (AMR), asthma control, and caregiver perception of asthma control as predictors of the MARS. RESULTS Caregivers were female (97%) and 27.4% had an annual income under $10,000. The mean MARS score was 21.88 ± 3.33 out of a possible range of 5-25, representing high adherence. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that a five-item one-factor model marginally fit the data based on the fit indices: χ2 (5) = 31.71, p < 0.001; RMSEA ≤ 0.161; CFI = 0.986; TLI = 0.971; and WRMR = 0.979. The MARS was associated with another caregiver-reported measure of medication adherence but not associated with AMR, asthma control, or caregiver perception of asthma control. CONCLUSIONS The MARS demonstrated marginal fit in CFA and may not be clinically indicated in light of the lack of associations with objective measures of asthma medication adherence and asthma control.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Adherence with controller medication is a major challenge in asthma management. Thus, a reliable method of measurement is mandatory to assess adherence. AIM To examine the test-retest reliability on adherence with inhaled corticosteroids in adults with asthma using, a self-reported adherence score (Foster score). METHODS Patients with asthma and >1 routine follow-up appointment at a university hospital outpatient clinic reported Foster scores. The objective Medication Possession Ratio (MPR) was calculated based on pharmacy redemption data and physician-prescribed doses of inhaled corticosteroids. The difference between Foster score and MPR at the first and second visit was assessed using a Bland-Altman plot, outcomes reported as limits of agreements and bias. Foster scores from both visits were used to calculate an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). RESULTS Self-reported adherence with asthma controller medication measured by Foster score was significantly higher than the objective MPR (p < 0.0001). The Bland-Altman plot for MPR and Foster score at the first and second visit showed upper and lower limits of agreement of 83.5 - (-1.6) and 80.9 - (-6.9) and bias was 41.0 and 37.0, respectively. Of the included patients, 93.1% reported identical Foster scores between visits, resulting in an excellent ICC of 0.92. Absolute median difference between Foster scores and MPR at first and second visit was 8.7 percentage points (p = 0.049). CONCLUSION Foster score shows an excellent ICC; however, its poor agreement with objective measures of adherence suggests that clinicians should not rely on Foster scores alone to assess adherence with inhaled corticosteroids in patients with asthma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To provide an overview of instruments that measure adherence to medications to facilitate selection of an instrument and to provide a summary of some published adherence assessment tools tailored to be used by the healthcare team, especially the pharmacists. DATA SOURCES Studies were identified via PubMed, Medline, Embase, and Google Scholar using the search terms medication adherence, compliance, persistence, combined with the terms questionnaire, scale, survey, self-report, and instrument. STUDY SELECTION Articles written in English, describing questionnaire instruments that were psychometrically evaluated (reporting a good coefficient of internal consistency, reliability assessed through Cronbach's alpha, and had been validated against a subjective or objective measure), and containing 30 or fewer items were included. DATA SYNTHESIS Twelve instruments were identified and included in this review. Instruments were reviewed by evaluating specific characteristics (number of items, sample size, reliability, sensitivity, specificity, questionnaire completion time, criterion validity, and component analysis). CONCLUSION Various instruments are used to assess patient adherence to medications; however, no single one performs well on all criteria. Every instrument has different advantages and unique properties. A particular instrument can be chosen after considering certain factors, such as the specific requirements, population, the needed time to complete the questionnaire, the sensitivity, and the specificity of the questionnaire. Moreover, there is a recognized need to provide primary care medication adherence services customized to patient's needs. A link for teamwork between healthcare providers such as pharmacists and patients is needed. This link can be a validated instrument to assess patient's adherence to medication.

Abstract
PURPOSE As stated in the Global Initiative for Asthma, there are still some asthmatic patients who have not achieved asthma control. Mobile is a useful tool for asthma management. We aimed to compare the advantages of mobile management with traditional management in improving adherence and control of asthma. METHODS In this prospective, multicentre, randomized, controlled and parallel-group study, we enrolled patients with poor adherence and uncontrolled asthma at 32 hospitals in 28 provinces in China. Patients were randomly assigned to the mobile management or traditional management groups for 12 months. The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients with good adherence (Medication Adherence Report Scale for Asthma [MARS-A] score ≥ 45) for 6 months. This study is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT02917174). RESULTS Between April 2017 and April 2018, 923 patients were eligible for randomization (mobile group, n = 461; traditional group, n = 462). Dropout was 84 (18.2%) in the mobile management group and 113 (24.4%) patients in the traditional management group. The proportion of patients with good adherence was significantly higher in the mobile management group than in the traditional management group (66.0% vs. 58.99%, P = 0.048). The mobile management group showed higher mean MARS-A score (at 1, 6, 9, and 12 months) and asthma control test scores (at 6 and 9 months), and lower total lost rate to follow-up within 12 months than the traditional management group. CONCLUSIONS Mobile asthma management can improve adherence and asthma control compared to traditional management. TRIAL REGISTRATION ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02917174.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is highly prevalent and associated with increased morbidity among World Trade Center (WTC) rescue and recovery workers with asthma. However, the potential behavioral pathways underlying this relationship remain unclear. OBJECTIVE To evaluate whether PTSD is associated with lower adherence to asthma self-management behaviors among WTC workers with asthma. METHODS We used data from a prospective cohort of WTC workers with a physician diagnosis of asthma who were prescribed controller medications. Presence of comorbid PTSD was determined based on structured clinical interviews. Asthma self-management behaviors included medication adherence, inhaler technique, use of action plans, and trigger avoidance. We conducted unadjusted and multiple regression analyses to evaluate the association of PTSD with asthma self-management. RESULTS Overall, 30% of 276 WTC workers with asthma had comorbid PTSD. Posttraumatic stress disorder was associated with worse asthma control and poorer quality of life. However, PTSD was not significantly associated with medication adherence (odds ratio [OR] -0.15; 95% confidence interval [CI] -0.5 to 0.2), inhaler technique (OR -0.12; 95% CI -0.7 to 0.5), use of action plans (OR 0.8; 95% CI 0.4 to 1.8), or trigger avoidance (OR 0.9; 95% CI 0.4 to 1.8). CONCLUSIONS We did not find significant differences in key asthma self-management behaviors between WTC workers with and without PTSD. These results suggest that other mechanisms, such as differences in symptom perception or inflammatory pathways, may explain the association between PTSD and increased asthma morbidity.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Non-adherence to medicines is estimated to cost billions to healthcare providers across the US and Europe each year. Addressing medication adherence (MA) can be challenging. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) have been developed to collect self-reported data on MA, among other behaviours. Despite the myriad PROMs available and their widespread implementation in research, there is little commentary or standardization on the way they are reported, or their validity assessed. This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of systematic reviews (SRs) that report PROMs of MA with a focus on type 2 diabetes to explore PROM reporting and validity. MATERIALS AND METHODS A literature search was conducted using the following databases: PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, Cochrane, and Web of Science. SRs reporting on PROMs related to MA behaviour in patients living with type 2 diabetes were included. Any SR published in English prior to December 2021 was included. Abstract and title screening were performed prior to full-text review by two independent researchers with discrepancies managed by a third. Protocols and SRs reporting on paediatric populations were excluded. RESULTS A total of 19 eligible SRs that included 241 unique PROM studies were captured from the initial 2074 records that were identified. Data were captured across a 30-year scope, with roughly half (47.4%, n=9/19) of the SRs published in the last 5 years. In total, 104 unique PROMs were identified. Inclusion of non-validated PROMs was identified in 63.2% (n=12/19) of the included SRs, and reporting issues were identified in 47.3% of studies (n=114/241). A lower journal impact factor was significantly associated with a higher prevalence of validity issues (r=0.44, p=0.04). CONCLUSION There are a broad range of available PROMs; however, they have been reported inconsistently in the literature, often lacking significant evidence with respect to validity criteria. Standardization of reporting and assessments of validity may help to address this.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) are the backbone of and primary choice for long-term asthma control therapy; however, the level of adherence to this regimen has not yet been investigated, particularly in the study area of Northwest Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the level of adherence to ICS treatment and its impact on adults living with asthma in Northwestern Ethiopian hospitals. MATERIALS AND METHODS A multicenter institution-based survey was conducted in asthma patients treated with ICS-based regimens in public hospitals in Northwest Ethiopia. Adherence to ICS was measured with the Medication Adherence Report Scale for Asthma. Descriptive statistics were used to present respondents' characteristics, and logistic regression was used to test associations between predictors and outcome variables. A level of p<0.05 was used as a cut-off point for a significant association. RESULTS Of a total of 422 approached subjects, 96.7% completed the survey. The mean (±SD) age of the participants was 49.82 (±16.1) years. The majority of participants (86.1%) had a low level of adherence to ICS treatment. A significant proportion (42%) of the respondents reported that they utilized ICS only before performing exercises that made them breathless. Around two-fifths of the participants used ICS either when they needed it or when they felt breathless. Furthermore, one-third of the study subjects reported that they either avoided or forgot to take ICS. Participants who had access to free healthcare services had better adherence to ICS (p=0.01), and non-adherence to ICS therapy was significantly associated with poor levels of asthma control (p≤0.001). CONCLUSION This study found that adult patients with asthma had low levels of adherence to ICS therapy. Future prospective research in a larger population, focusing on identifying the obstacles to ICS adherence in patients living with asthma and creating successful intervention options, is recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Medication nonadherence of patients with chronic conditions is a complex phenomenon contributing to increased economic burden and decreased quality of life. Intervention development relies on accurately assessing adherence but no "gold standard" method currently exists. PURPOSE The present scoping review aimed to: (a) review and describe current methods of assessing medication adherence (MA) in patients with chronic conditions with the highest nonadherence rates (asthma, cancer, diabetes, epilepsy, HIV/AIDS, hypertension), (b) outline and compare the evidence on the quality indicators between assessment methods (e.g., sensitivity), and (c) provide evidence-based recommendations. METHODS PubMed, PsycINFO and Scopus databases were screened, resulting in 62,592 studies of which 71 met criteria and were included. RESULTS Twenty-seven self-report and 10 nonself-report measures were identified. The Medication Adherence Report Scale (MARS-5) was found to be the most accurate self-report, whereas electronic monitoring devices such as Medication Event Monitoring System (MEMS) corresponded to the most accurate nonself-report. Higher MA rates were reported when assessed using self-reports compared to nonself-reports, except from pill counts. CONCLUSIONS Professionals are advised to use a combination of self-report (like MARS-5) and nonself-report measures (like MEMS) as these were found to be the most accurate and reliable measures. This is the first review examining self and nonself-report methods for MA, across chronic conditions with the highest nonadherence rates and provides evidence-based recommendations. It highlights that MA assessment methods are understudied in certain conditions, like epilepsy. Before selecting a MA measure, professionals are advised to inspect its quality indicators. Feasibility of measures should be explored in future studies as there is presently a lack of evidence.

Abstract
Challenges with self-management are a major contributor to poor outcomes among adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The causes of poor self-management in COPD are manifold, and they arise from physical, cognitive, socioeconomic, environmental and societal sources. To address this complexity, we developed the Supporting self-Management Behaviors in Adults with COPD (SaMBA-COPD) model, which uses lay health coaches to identify a patient's barriers to effective COPD self-management and provide tailored support to help them overcome those barriers, reduce their symptoms and need for urgent care and improve their quality of life. The 6-month intervention includes referral of patients to a pharmacist for prescription of antibiotic and oral steroid "rescue packs" and support for a structured home exercise routine. All interactions of coaches and patients will take place by telephone or video call. We will test the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of SaMBA-COPD in a trial of 58 patients randomized 1:1 to the intervention or a COPD education control. Outcomes will be assessed at 6 and 9 months. Data from the trial will be used to inform the design of a fully powered, multi-site randomized trial of the intervention.

Abstract
Background Young adults with asthma often report low adherence to inhaled corticosteroids (ICS), leading to uncontrolled symptoms and poor disease outcomes. Technology-enabled digital supports such as mobile health (mHealth) asthma smartphone apps have the potential to support adherence to ICS and asthma self-management. There is a need for feasibility studies to determine the usability, acceptability, and feasibility of these interventions. In addition, it is essential to determine the feasibility of recruiting and retaining young adults to plan future efficacy and effectiveness trials and therefore, establish evidence-based asthma apps. Objective This study aimed to determine (1) the feasibility of recruiting and retaining young adults to a trial and (2) the usability, acceptability, and feasibility of using the AsthmaMD app to support adherence to ICS in a population of young adults living with asthma. Methods A multi-methods feasibility study was conducted. Young adults aged 18-30 years with asthma and current prescription for ICS were eligible and invited to take part through a university circular email, social media, and general practice sites. Participation involved completing a baseline self-report questionnaire, downloading and using the AsthmaMD app for 2 weeks, and completing the follow-up assessment, including self-report and open-ended questions about participants’ experience of using the app. Primary outcomes included participant recruitment and retention and the usability, acceptability, and feasibility of using AsthmaMD. Quantitative self-report data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and qualitative open-ended data were analyzed using inductive reflexive thematic analysis. Results A total of 122 young adults (females, n=101, 82.8%) with a mean age of 24.4 (SD 3.8) years were recruited and they completed baseline measures. Of the 122 young adults, 59 (48.4%) completed the study. The AsthmaMD app received a mean score of 63.1/100 (SD 20.1) on the System Usability Scale (ie, a standardized measure of usability for technology-based apps), and an overall user satisfaction score of 5.8/10 (SD 2.2). Of the 59 participants who completed the study, 49 (83%) participants used the app ≥1 day per week. Two main themes were identified in the qualitative analysis of user experiences: (1) learning how to use the app to suit the individual and (2) benefits and relevance of using the app. Conclusions The findings from this study indicate that it is feasible to recruit and retain young adults to examine efficacy and effectiveness in a future trial and that young adults living with asthma may find AsthmaMD to be usable, acceptable, and feasible to support adherence to ICS. Our findings also identified opportunities to further optimize the usability of AsthmaMD and similar apps. Based on our findings, we recommend providing more accessible information on how to use the app and replacing medical terminology with simplified language within the app to improve usability. Abstract
Introduction Medication adherence is often low among people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and medication regimen complexity may be a contributing factor. In this study, we sought to examine the role of medication regimen complexity in COPD medication adherence among patients with multimorbidity. Methods We performed cross-sectional analysis of data on COPD patients in primary care and pulmonary practices in New York City and Chicago (n=400). Regimen complexity was represented by the medication regimen complexity index (MRCI) and simple medication count. Adherence was measured by self-report and inhaler dose counts. Disease control measures included the COPD severity score (COPDSS) and the Medical Research Council (MRC) severity index. Results Mean age of study participants was 69 years, 66% had MRC grades 4 or 5, and 45% had low medication adherence. MRCI scores did not differ significantly between those with and without adequate medication adherence. Patients with higher MRCI scores were more likely to have severe COPD (OR 5.00, 95% CI 1.46-17.1, p=0.01) and dyspnea grades 3 or 4 (OR 2.27, 95% CI 1.03-5.03, p=0.04). Significant associations of medication count with COPD severity were also observed. Discussion These findings demonstrate that among patients with COPD and comorbid hypertension and diabetes, higher medication regimen complexity is associated with worse COPD control but not with COPD medication adherence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Postmenopausal breast cancer survivors (PBCS) are at increased risk of bone loss and fractures due to age-related decline of estrogen, and this risk is compounded by aromatase inhibitor cancer therapy. Several patient-level targetable risk factors can mitigate osteoporosis risk; however, adequate health behavior and risk perception in this population are underreported. The goal of this study was to evaluate osteoporosis knowledge and beliefs and assess their association with engagement in osteoporosis preventive behaviors among PBCS. METHODS In this cross-sectional descriptive study, early stage I-IIIA PBCS (ages 55-86 years) completed the Facts on Osteoporosis Quiz, Osteoporosis Health Beliefs Scale, and Osteoporosis Preventive Behaviors questionnaires. Participants who were non-English speaking or declined to participate were excluded. Clinical and sociodemographic information were obtained from chart review and baseline questionnaire, respectively. Fisher's exact test, Student t-test, and Wilcoxon Mann-Whitney tests were used where appropriate to assess the association between knowledge and beliefs with engagement in osteoporosis preventive behaviors. RESULTS The mean participant age was 66.1 years with 20% self-reporting as non-Hispanic White, 40% non-Hispanic Black, 27% Hispanic, and 13% other. Approximately 83% of the cohort had estrogen receptor positive breast cancer and received a bone density scan within the last six years. Osteoporosis knowledge (10.5 ± 3.4), seriousness (14.9 ± 3.8), and susceptibility (14.0 ± 3.5) mean scores were low among PBCS. Most PBCS (75%) were adherent to calcium and vitamin D supplements, but only 47% reported engagement in strength-training exercises. Married/partnered, higher osteoporosis knowledge and health motivation scores were associated with strength-training exercise. After adjustment for marital status and osteoporosis knowledge, only health motivation score remained significantly associated with strength-training exercise (OR 5.56, 95% CI 1.35-22.93). CONCLUSIONS PBCS are highly motivated to keep a healthy lifestyle despite limited osteoporosis knowledge, perceived risk, and susceptibility. However, < 50% participated in strength-training exercise. Our findings suggest that oncologic care should include osteoporosis and fracture prevention strategies, directed at encouraging cancer survivors to increase their engagement in osteoporosis preventive behaviors, particularly strength-training exercises.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Medication non-adherence mostly occurs in patients with a wide range of disease severity, including asthma. The aim of the study was to assess the self reported adherence to asthma therapy and investigate the relationship between adherence, asthma control and asthma-related quality of life. METHODS The study was a cross-sectional study in which participants were recruited from an outpatient department, in one hospital in Surabaya. Patients (aged≥18 years) with asthma who had used any regular asthma medications were included. Standardised questionnaires, including Juniper's Asthma Control Questionnaire (ACQ), Adherence to Refills and Medications Scales (ARMS) and Juniper's Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (AQLQ) were used. RESULTS A total of 82 adults with asthma were recruited in the study. Male participants' mean age was 49.13 ± 14.10 years (n = 23). Approximately 59 participants (72.0%) were females, 30 participants (36.5%) were using Budesonide inhaler, and 73 participants (89.0%) never smoked. The mean of ACQ, AQLQ, and ARMS scores were 1.62 ± 1.19, 4.96 ± 1.24, and 16.98 ± 4.12, respectively. Of 82 patients studied 53 (64.6 %) had "uncontrolled asthma" and more than 85% participants both showed "non adherence" to asthma therapy and nearly 46% of them indicated that their quality of life was affected by asthma. There was a significant association between ACQ and AQLQ (p<0.05), whereas no statistically significant association was found between ACQ and ARMS. CONCLUSIONS The majority of patients reported non-adherence to asthma medications. Poor controlled asthma has been associated with lower asthma-related quality of life.

Abstract
Background: Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) are the foundation of asthma management. However, ICS non-adherence is common. Black adults have lower ICS adherence than white adults, which likely contributes, in part, to the asthma disparities that Black adults experience. Objective: To explore how Black adults with uncontrolled asthma and their primary care providers communicated about ICS non-adherence and used shared decision-making to identify strategies to increase ICS use. Design: Eighty routine clinical visits for uncontrolled asthma were audio recorded and inductively analyzed using methods adapted from grounded theory methodology. Participants: Study participants included 80 Black adults (83% female) largely low-income (83% Medicaid) and their 10 primary care providers. The study settings were 2 Federally Qualified Health Centers. Key Results: Three overarching themes were identified: (1) ICS misuse and lack of knowledge; (2) external influences informed personal misconceptions about ICS; and (3) patient-provider communication to individualize plan of care. Conclusions: Reasons for ICS non-adherence in Black adults with uncontrolled asthma offer potential targets for interventions that facilitate enhanced adherence. Future research should include PCP training on strategies that support patient-centered care, such as communication, shared decision-making and patient engagement.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the relative contributions of health literacy (HL) and illness and medication beliefs to medication adherence among older COPD patients and determine the pathways through which they operate. METHODS The study was conducted using data from a prospective cohort of COPD patients in New York City and Chicago. We used structural equation modeling to examine the pathways linking HL, through medications and illness beliefs, with COPD medication adherence. RESULTS Out of 393 older adults with COPD, 123 (31%) had limited HL and 208 (53%) reported low adherence to daily COPD medications. Those with limited HL were more likely to have low medication adherence (p < 0.0001). Medications concerns (p = 0.001) and medication necessity (p = 0.003) demonstrated a mediational role between HL and adherence. However, in the final multivariate model, HL did not have direct effect on medication adherence (p = 0.12) and illness beliefs (p = 0.16) did not demonstrate a mediational role between HL and adherence. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that low HL is not a direct predictor of poor medication adherence among COPD patients. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Addressing medication concerns and reinforcing the need for daily COPD medications may be a more effective strategy for increasing adherence in this population.

Abstract
There is a clinical need to identify children with poor asthma control as early as possible, to optimize treatment and/or to find therapeutic alternatives. Here, we present the “Systems Pharmacology Approach to Uncontrolled Pediatric Asthma” (SysPharmPediA) study, which aims to establish a pediatric cohort of moderate-to-severe uncontrolled and controlled patients with asthma, to investigate pathophysiological mechanisms underlying uncontrolled moderate-to-severe asthma in children on maintenance treatment, using a multi-omics systems medicine approach. In this multicenter observational case–control study, moderate-to-severe asthmatic children (age; 6–17 years) were included from four European countries (Netherlands, Germany, Spain, and Slovenia). Subjects were classified based on asthma control and number of exacerbations. Demographics, current and past patient/family history, and clinical characteristics were collected. In addition, systems-wide omics layers, including epi(genomics), transcriptomics, microbiome, proteomics, and metabolomics were evaluated from multiple samples. In all, 145 children were included in this cohort, 91 with uncontrolled (median age = 12 years, 43% females) and 54 with controlled asthma (median age = 11.7 years, 37% females). The two groups did not show statistically significant differences in age, sex, and body mass index z-score distribution. Comprehensive information and diverse noninvasive biosampling procedures for various omics analyses will provide the opportunity to delineate underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of moderate-to-severe uncontrolled pediatric asthma. This eventually might reveal novel biomarkers, which could potentially be used for noninvasive personalized diagnostics and/or treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the relationship between illness perceptions, medication beliefs, and self-reported adherence to inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) therapy in adult Chinese patients with asthma. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted in the asthma outpatient clinic of Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University (Shanghai, China) between October 2018 and September 2019. Illness perceptions, medication beliefs, and medication adherence were assessed using validated scales, specifically the Medication Adherence Report Scale for Asthma, Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire -Specific, and the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire. Spearman correlation and multiple logistic regression were used to determine the relationship among these factors. Results: A total of 234 patients were included in this study. Of this group, 99 (42.3%) participants were non-adherent to their ICS medication. Medication adherence correlated negatively with 'illness identity' (perceived symptom), 'emotional response' (perceived emotional effect) and concerns about medication (r=-0.16, -0.16 and -0.15, respectively, p < 0.05). After adjusting for illness perceptions, medication beliefs and demographics, beliefs about the necessity of medication (odds ratio [OR]: 1.14, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.01-1.30), and emotional response to the disease (OR: 0.89, 95% CI: 0.80-0.99) were significantly associated with medication adherence in patients with asthma. CONCLUSION Beliefs about the necessity of medication and emotional response to the illness have a strong influence on self-reported medication adherence in adult patients with asthma in China. Interventions targeted adherence improvement among patients with asthma may be tailored to the individual's baseline perceptions and medication beliefs, and focus on modifying inaccurate illness perceptions and medication beliefs as the main targets.

Abstract
Background Asthma is a significant health issue among Vietnamese adults in both urban and rural areas. The disease needs serious concern to minimize impact and improve the situation. Objective This study aimed to describe the level of health literacy, symptom control, and medication management and determine the relationships among them in patients with asthma in Da Nang, Vietnam. Methods A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 84 patients with asthma. The questionnaires were used in this study, including demographic form, the Short-Form Health Literacy questionnaire (HL-SF12), Asthma Control Test (ACT), and Medication Adherence Reporting Scale for Asthma (MARS-A). Pearson product-moment correlation was applied to determine the relationship between health literacy, symptom control, and medication management. Results The score revealed for general-health literacy, symptom control, and medication management were 28.70 (SD = 9.66), 17.72 (SD = 4.67), and 3.63 (SD = 0.75), respectively. Health literacy level had moderate positive relationships with symptom control (r = 0.41) and medication management (r = 0.44). Conclusion The patients had limited health literacy, partially controlled symptom, and poor adherence to the medication. Health literacy level had moderate positive relationships with symptom control and medication management. These findings are crucial for effective treatment and management of the disease in Vietnam. To improve medication management and symptom control among patients with asthma, nurses should concern patients' health literacy level.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Self-care practice of asthma is the strategy for asthma symptom control and future reduction of exacerbation, but it is poorly implemented in clinical settings due to the patients, professionals, and organizational related factors. Therefore, the study aimed to assess the self-care practice and associated factors among adult asthmatic patients at Northwest Amhara referral hospitals. METHODS Institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted among asthmatic patients on follow-up care at Northwest Amhara Regional State referral hospitals from February 1st, 2020 to March 30, 2020. Data were collected through an interviewer-administered technique. Asthma self-care practice tool was used to measure the outcome. Data were entered into EPI info version 7 and exported to SPSS version 22 for analysis. A binary logistic regression analysis was used. In multivariable logistic regression analysis, those independent variables having p value < 0.05 were considered as statistically significant with poor self-care practice of asthma. RESULTS A total of 470 participants enrolled in the study with a response rate of 100%. The proportion of good self-care practice among asthmatic patients was found to be 42.3%. The study revealed that; age group ≥ 55 years, having a co-morbid illness and borderline anxiety, having no social support, and drinking alcohol were significantly associated with poor asthma self-care practice. CONCLUSIONS Poor-self care practice in this study was high. Efforts need to be implemented for asthmatic patients with older age, having co-morbid illness and borderline anxiety, having no social support, and drinking alcohol.

Abstract
Errors in medication self-administration (MSA) lead to poor treatment adherence, increased hospitalizations and higher healthcare costs. These errors are particularly common when medication delivery involves devices such as inhalers or insulin pens. We present a contactless and unobtrusive artificial intelligence (AI) framework that can detect and monitor MSA errors by analyzing the wireless signals in the patient's home, without the need for physical contact. The system was developed by observing self-administration conducted by volunteers and evaluated by comparing its prediction with human annotations. Findings from this study demonstrate that our approach can automatically detect when patients use their inhalers (area under the curve (AUC) = 0.992) or insulin pens (AUC = 0.967), and assess whether patients follow the appropriate steps for using these devices (AUC = 0.952). The work shows the potential of leveraging AI-based solutions to improve medication safety with minimal overhead for patients and health professionals.
