Built-In Electric Field Boost Photocatalytic Degradation of Pollutants in Wastewater

The photocatalysis technique shows significant potential for wastewater degradation; however, the rapid recombination of photogenerated holes and electrons severely limits its photocatalytic efficiency. This situation necessitates the development of effective strategies to tackle these challenges. One well-documented approach is built-in electric field engineering in heterojunctions or composites, which has been shown to enhance electron transfer and thereby reduce the recombination of electrons and holes. This strategy has proven highly effective in significantly improving photocatalytic activity for the degradation of pollutants in wastewater. In this context, we summarize recent advancements in built-in electric field engineering in photocatalysts, highlighting the fundamentals and modifications of this approach, as well as its positive impact on photocatalytic performance in the degradation of wastewater pollutants.

Transition metal oxide clusters: advanced electrocatalysts for a sustainable energy future

The comprehensive utilization of sustainable green energy is essential to face the global energy and environmental crisis. The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and electrocatalytic urea synthesis (EUS) are the pivotal electrocatalytic processes, necessitating the development of low-cost electrocatalysts with high efficiency. Small-sized transition metal oxide (TMO) clusters have attracted a lot of attention because of their exceptional qualities, such as exhibiting a dense array of low-coordinated metal active sites (e.g. abundant metal cation defects and oxygen vacancy), amorphous structures with high surface energy, high atom utilization efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. Furthermore, the synergistic actions between metal clusters and TM-Nx single atom active sites remarkably boost up the electrocatalytic performances, corroborated by density functional theory (DFT). More efforts in this comprehensive feature article are expected to achieve insights into the fundamental understanding of electrocatalytic reaction mechanisms in our lab and serve as a guide for creating cutting-edge electrocatalysts of transition metal oxide clusters.

Regulating the Electrochemical Nitrate Reduction Performance with Controllable Distribution of Unconventional Phase Copper on Alloy Nanostructures

Electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) is emerging as a promising strategy for nitrate removal and ammonia (NH3) production using renewable electricity. Although great progresses have been achieved, the crystal phase effect of electrocatalysts on NO3RR remains rarely explored. Here, the epitaxial growth of unconventional 2H Cu on hexagonal close-packed (hcp) IrNi template, resulting in the formation of three IrNiCu@Cu nanostructures, is reported. IrNiCu@Cu-20 shows superior catalytic performance, with NH3 Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 86% at -0.1 (vs reversible hydrogen electrode [RHE]) and NH3 yield rate of 687.3 mmol gCu -1 h-1, far better than common face-centered cubic Cu. In sharp contrast, IrNiCu@Cu-30 and IrNiCu@Cu-50 covered by hcp Cu shell display high selectivity toward nitrite (NO2 -), with NO2 - FE above 60% at 0.1 (vs RHE). Theoretical calculations have demonstrated that the IrNiCu@Cu-20 has the optimal electronic structures for NO3RR due to the highest d-band center and strongest reaction trend with the lowest energy barriers. The high electroactivity of IrNiCu@Cu-20 originates from the abundant low coordination of Cu sites on the surface, which guarantees the fast electron transfer to accelerate the intermediate conversions. This work provides a feasible tactic to regulate the product distribution of NO3RR by crystal phase engineering of electrocatalysts.

Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Detection for Fenthion Pesticides Based on Gold Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Solid-State Substrates

Current label-free surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) assay for the detection and analysis of organophosphorus pesticides has achieved initial success, but the application still faces constraints of substrate portability and specificity. To this end, this paper demonstrates a method for portable, rapid, and specific detection of low concentrations of fenthion pesticides based on a solid substrate of gold nanoparticle monolayers combined with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). The nano-monolayers were transferred to the surface of mercapto-silicon wafers by interfacial self-assembly technique to form a stable connection with S-Au bonds and, at the same time, prevent nanoparticles from dropping off during the surfactant removal process. Then, the fenthion MIPs were directly generated on the surface of the monolayer film by spin-coating with a pre-polymerization solution and ultraviolet-induced polymerization. Tests showed that the molecular imprint was able to accurately bind to fenthion, but not other molecules, in a mixture of structural analogs, achieving a low concentration detection of 10-8 mol/L. The composite substrate maintained a signal uniformity of a relative standard deviation (RSD)  =  7.05% and a batch-to-batch reproducibility of RSD  =  10.40%, making it a potential pathway for the extended application of SERS technology.

Controlled Synthesis of Unconventional Phase Alloy Nanobranches for Highly Selective Electrocatalytic Nitrite Reduction to Ammonia

The controlled synthesis of metal nanomaterials with unconventional phases is of significant importance to develop high-performance catalysts for various applications. However, it remains challenging to modulate the atomic arrangements of metal nanomaterials, especially the alloy nanostructures that involve different metals with distinct redox potentials. Here we report the general one-pot synthesis of IrNi, IrRhNi and IrFeNi alloy nanobranches with unconventional hexagonal close-packed (hcp) phase. Notably, the as-synthesized hcp IrNi nanobranches demonstrate excellent catalytic performance towards electrochemical nitrite reduction reaction (NO2RR), with superior NH3 Faradaic efficiency and yield rate of 98.2 % and 34.6 mg h-1 mgcat -1 (75.5 mg h-1 mgIr -1) at 0 and -0.1 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode), respectively. Ex/in situ characterizations and theoretical calculations reveal that the Ir-Ni interactions within hcp IrNi alloy improve electron transfer to benefit both nitrite activation and active hydrogen generation, leading to a stronger reaction trend of NO2RR by greatly reducing energy barriers of rate-determining step.

Electronic Structure Design of Transition Metal-Based Catalysts for Electrochemical Carbon Dioxide Reduction

With the increasingly serious greenhouse effect, the electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) has garnered widespread attention as it is capable of leveraging renewable energy to convert CO2 into value-added chemicals and fuels. However, the performance of CO2RR can hardly meet expectations because of the diverse intermediates and complicated reaction processes, necessitating the exploitation of highly efficient catalysts. In recent years, with advanced characterization technologies and theoretical simulations, the exploration of catalytic mechanisms has gradually deepened into the electronic structure of catalysts and their interactions with intermediates, which serve as a bridge to facilitate the deeper comprehension of structure-performance relationships. Transition metal-based catalysts (TMCs), extensively applied in electrochemical CO2RR, demonstrate substantial potential for further electronic structure modulation, given their abundance of d electrons. Herein, we discuss the representative feasible strategies to modulate the electronic structure of catalysts, including doping, vacancy, alloying, heterostructure, strain, and phase engineering. These approaches profoundly alter the inherent properties of TMCs and their interaction with intermediates, thereby greatly affecting the reaction rate and pathway of CO2RR. It is believed that the rational electronic structure design and modulation can fundamentally provide viable directions and strategies for the development of advanced catalysts toward efficient electrochemical conversion of CO2 and many other small molecules.

Electrochemical Nitrate Reduction: Ammonia Synthesis and the Beyond

Natural nitrogen cycle has been severely disrupted by anthropogenic activities. The overuse of N-containing fertilizers induces the increase of nitrate level in surface and ground waters, and substantial emission of nitrogen oxides causes heavy air pollution. Nitrogen gas, as the main component of air, has been used for mass ammonia production for over a century, providing enough nutrition for agriculture to support world population increase. In the last decade, researchers have made great efforts to develop ammonia processes under ambient conditions to combat the intensive energy consumption and high carbon emission associated with the Haber-Bosch process. Among different techniques, electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) can achieve nitrate removal and ammonia generation simultaneously using renewable electricity as the power, and there is an exponential growth of studies in this research direction. Here, a timely and comprehensive review on the important progresses of electrochemical NO3RR, covering the rational design of electrocatalysts, emerging CN coupling reactions, and advanced energy conversion and storage systems is provided. Moreover, future perspectives are proposed to accelerate the industrialized NH3 production and green synthesis of chemicals, leading to a sustainable nitrogen cycle via prosperous N-based electrochemistry.

Crystal-Phase Engineering in Heterogeneous Catalysis

The performance of a chemical reaction is critically dependent on the electronic and/or geometric structures of a material in heterogeneous catalysis. Over the past century, the Sabatier principle has already provided a conceptual framework for optimal catalyst design by adjusting the electronic structure of the catalytic material via a change in composition. Beyond composition, it is essential to recognize that the geometric atomic structures of a catalyst, encompassing terraces, edges, steps, kinks, and corners, have a substantial impact on the activity and selectivity of a chemical reaction. Crystal-phase engineering has the capacity to bring about substantial alterations in the electronic and geometric configurations of a catalyst, enabling control over coordination numbers, morphological features, and the arrangement of surface atoms. Modulating the crystallographic phase is therefore an important strategy for improving the stability, activity, and selectivity of catalytic materials. Nonetheless, a complete understanding of how the performance depends on the crystal phase of a catalyst remains elusive, primarily due to the absence of a molecular-level view of active sites across various crystal phases. In this review, we primarily focus on assessing the dependence of catalytic performance on crystal phases to elucidate the challenges and complexities inherent in heterogeneous catalysis, ultimately aiming for improved catalyst design.

In Situ TEM Characterization and Modulation for Phase Engineering of Nanomaterials

Solid-state phase transformation is an intriguing phenomenon in crystalline or noncrystalline solids due to the distinct physical and chemical properties that can be obtained and modified by phase engineering. Compared to bulk solids, nanomaterials exhibit enhanced capability for phase engineering due to their small sizes and high surface-to-volume ratios, facilitating various emerging applications. To establish a comprehensive atomistic understanding of phase engineering, in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques have emerged as powerful tools, providing unprecedented atomic-resolution imaging, multiple characterization and stimulation mechanisms, and real-time integrations with various external fields. In this Review, we present a comprehensive overview of recent advances in in situ TEM studies to characterize and modulate nanomaterials for phase transformations under different stimuli, including mechanical, thermal, electrical, environmental, optical, and magnetic factors. We briefly introduce crystalline structures and polymorphism and then summarize phase stability and phase transformation models. The advanced experimental setups of in situ techniques are outlined and the advantages of in situ TEM phase engineering are highlighted, as demonstrated via several representative examples. Besides, the distinctive properties that can be obtained from in situ phase engineering are presented. Finally, current challenges and future research opportunities, along with their potential applications, are suggested.

Recent Progress on Phase Engineering of Nanomaterials

As a key structural parameter, phase depicts the arrangement of atoms in materials. Normally, a nanomaterial exists in its thermodynamically stable crystal phase. With the development of nanotechnology, nanomaterials with unconventional crystal phases, which rarely exist in their bulk counterparts, or amorphous phase have been prepared using carefully controlled reaction conditions. Together these methods are beginning to enable phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN), i.e., the synthesis of nanomaterials with unconventional phases and the transformation between different phases, to obtain desired properties and functions. This Review summarizes the research progress in the field of PEN. First, we present representative strategies for the direct synthesis of unconventional phases and modulation of phase transformation in diverse kinds of nanomaterials. We cover the synthesis of nanomaterials ranging from metal nanostructures such as Au, Ag, Cu, Pd, and Ru, and their alloys; metal oxides, borides, and carbides; to transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and 2D layered materials. We review synthesis and growth methods ranging from wet-chemical reduction and seed-mediated epitaxial growth to chemical vapor deposition (CVD), high pressure phase transformation, and electron and ion-beam irradiation. After that, we summarize the significant influence of phase on the various properties of unconventional-phase nanomaterials. We also discuss the potential applications of the developed unconventional-phase nanomaterials in different areas including catalysis, electrochemical energy storage (batteries and supercapacitors), solar cells, optoelectronics, and sensing. Finally, we discuss existing challenges and future research directions in PEN.

Progress on Single-Atom Photocatalysts for H2 Generation: Material Design, Catalytic Mechanism, and Perspectives

Solar energy utilization is of great significance to current challenges of the energy crisis and environmental pollution, which benefit the development of the global community to achieve carbon neutrality goals. Hydrogen energy is also treated as a good candidate for future energy supply since its combustion not only supplies high-density energy but also shows no pollution gas. In particular, photocatalytic water splitting has attracted increasing research as a promising method for H2 production. Recently, single-atom (SA) photocatalysts have been proposed as a potential solution to improve catalytic efficiency and lower the costs of photocatalytic water splitting for H2 generation. Owing to the maximized atom utilization rate, abundant surface active sites, and tunable coordination environment, SA photocatalysts have achieved significant progress. This review reviews developments of advanced SA photocatalysts for H2 generation regarding the different support materials. The recent progress of titanium dioxide, metal-organic frameworks, two-dimensional carbon materials, and red phosphorus supported SA photocatalysts are carefully discussed. In particular, the material designs, reaction mechanisms, modulation strategies, and perspectives are highlighted for realizing improved solar-to-energy efficiency and H2 generation rate. This work will supply significant references for future design and synthesis of advanced SA photocatalysts.

Phase transition behaviour and mechanism of 2D TiO2(B) nanosheets through water-mediated removal of surface ligands

Phase engineering is a central subject in materials research. The recent research interest in the phase transition behavior of atomically thin 2D materials reveals the important role of their surface chemistry. In this study, we investigated the phase transformation of ultrathin TiO2(B) nanosheets to anatase under different conditions. We found that the convenient transformation in water under ambient conditions is driven by the hydrolysis of surface 1,2-ethylenedioxy groups and departure of ethylene glycol. A transformation pathway through the formation of protonic titanate is proposed. The ultrathin structure and the metastable nature of the precursor facilitate the phase conversion to anatase. Our finding offers a new insight into the mechanism of TiO2(B) phase transition from the viewpoint of surface chemistry and may contribute to the potential application of ultrathin TiO2(B) nanosheets in aqueous environments.

Insight on Atomically Dispersed Cu Catalysts for Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Electrochemical CO2 reduction (ECO2R) with renewable electricity is an advanced carbon conversion technology. At present, copper is the only metal to selectively convert CO2 into multicarbon (C2+) products. Among them, atomically dispersed (AD) Cu catalysts have received great attention due to the relatively single chemical environment, which are able to minimize the negative impact of morphology, valence state, and crystallographic properties, etc. on product selectivity. Furthermore, the completely exposed atomic Cu sites not only provide space and bonding electrons for the adsorption of reactants in favor of better catalytic activity but also provide an ideal platform for studying its reaction mechanism. This review summarizes the recent progress of AD Cu catalysts as a chemically tunable platform for ECO2R, including the atomic Cu sites dynamic evolution, the catalytic performance, and mechanism. Furthermore, the prospects and challenges of AD Cu catalysts for ECO2R are carefully discussed. We sincerely hope that this review can contribute to the rational design of AD Cu catalysts with enhanced performance for ECO2R.

Applications of Transmission Electron Microscopy in Phase Engineering of Nanomaterials

Phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN) is an emerging field that aims to tailor the physicochemical properties of nanomaterials by precisely manipulating their crystal phases. To advance PEN effectively, it is vital to possess the capability of characterizing the structures and compositions of nanomaterials with precision. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is a versatile tool that combines reciprocal-space diffraction, real-space imaging, and spectroscopic techniques, allowing for comprehensive characterization with exceptional resolution in the domains of time, space, momentum, and, increasingly, even energy. In this Review, we first introduce the fundamental mechanisms behind various TEM-related techniques, along with their respective application scopes and limitations. Subsequently, we review notable applications of TEM in PEN research, including applications in fields such as metallic nanostructures, carbon allotropes, low-dimensional materials, and nanoporous materials. Specifically, we underscore its efficacy in phase identification, composition and chemical state analysis, in situ observations of phase evolution, as well as the challenges encountered when dealing with beam-sensitive materials. Furthermore, we discuss the potential generation of artifacts during TEM imaging, particularly in scanning modes, and propose methods to minimize their occurrence. Finally, we offer our insights into the present state and future trends of this field, discussing emerging technologies including four-dimensional scanning TEM, three-dimensional atomic-resolution imaging, and electron microscopy automation while highlighting the significance and feasibility of these advancements.

Seeded Synthesis of Hollow PdSn Intermetallic Nanomaterials for Highly Efficient Electrocatalytic Glycerol Oxidation

Intermetallic nanomaterials have shown promising potential as high-performance catalysts in various catalytic reactions due to their unconventional crystal phases with ordered atomic arrangements. However, controlled synthesis of intermetallic nanomaterials with tunable crystal phases and unique hollow morphologies remains a challenge. Here, a seeded method is developed to synthesize hollow PdSn intermetallic nanoparticles (NPs) with two different intermetallic phases, that is, orthorhombic Pd2 Sn and monoclinic Pd3 Sn2 . Benefiting from the rational regulation of the crystal phase and morphology, the obtained hollow orthorhombic Pd2 Sn NPs deliver excellent electrocatalytic performance toward glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR), outperforming solid orthorhombic Pd2 Sn NPs, hollow monoclinic Pd3 Sn2 NPs, and commercial Pd/C, which places it among the best reported Pd-based GOR electrocatalysts. The reaction mechanism of GOR using the hollow orthorhombic Pd2 Sn as the catalyst is investigated by operando infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy, which reveals that the hollow orthorhombic Pd2 Sn catalyst cleaves the CC bond more easily compared to the commercial Pd/C. This work can pave an appealing route to the controlled synthesis of diverse novel intermetallic nanomaterials with hollow morphology for various promising applications.

Phase-Controlled Ruthenium Nanocrystals on Colloidal Polydopamine Supports and Their Catalytic Behaviors in Aerobic Oxidation Reactions

The past decade has witnessed rapidly growing interest in noble metal nanostructures adopting unconventional metastable crystal phases. In the case of Ru, chemically synthesized nanocrystals typically form thermodynamically favored hexagonal close-packed (hcp) crystal lattices, whereas it remains significantly more challenging to synthesize Ru nanocrystals in the metastable face-centered cubic (fcc) phase. In this work, we have synthesized polydopamine (PDA)-supported hcp and fcc Ru nanocrystals in a phase-selective manner through one-pot thermal reduction of appropriate Ru(III) precursors in a polyol solvent. Benefiting from the unique surface-adhesion function of PDA, we have been able to grow phase-controlled sub-5 nm Ru nanocrystals directly on colloidal PDA supports without prefunctionalizing the particle surfaces with any molecular linkers or surface-capping ligands. Success in phase-controlled synthesis of capping ligand-free Ru nanocrystals dispersed on the same support material enables us to systematically compare the intrinsic mass-specific and surface-specific activities of fcc and hcp Ru nanocatalysts toward the aerobic oxidation of a chromogenic molecular substrate, 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), under a broad range of reaction conditions. We use UV-vis absorption spectroscopy to monitor the conversion of the reactant molecules into the one-electron and two-electron oxidation products in real time during Ru-catalyzed oxidation of TMB, which is found to be a mechanistically complex molecule-transforming process involving multiple elementary steps. The apparent reaction rates and detailed kinetic features are observed to be not only intimately related to the crystalline structures of the Ru nanocatalysts but also profoundly influenced by several other critical factors, such as the pH of the reaction medium, the initial concentration of TMB, Ru coverage on the PDA supports, and degree of nanoparticle aggregation.

Structural Transformation of Unconventional-Phase Materials

The structural transformation of materials, which involves the evolution of different structural features, including phase, composition, morphology, etc., under external conditions, represents an important fundamental phenomenon and has drawn substantial research interest. Recently, materials with unconventional phases that are different from their thermodynamically stable ones have been demonstrated to possess distinct properties and compelling functions and can further serve as starting materials for structural transformation studies. The identification and mechanism study of the structural transformation process of unconventional-phase starting materials can not only provide deep insights into their thermodynamic stability in potential applications but also offer effective approaches for the synthesis of other unconventional structures. Here, we briefly summarize the recent research progress on the structural transformation of some typical starting materials with various unconventional phases, including the metastable crystalline phase, amorphous phase, and heterophase, induced by different approaches. The importance of unconventional-phase starting materials in the structural modulation of resultant intermediates and products will be highlighted. The employment of diverse in situ/operando characterization techniques and theoretical simulations in studying the mechanism of the structural transformation process will also be introduced. Finally, we discuss the existing challenges in this emerging research field and provide some future research directions.

Intrinsic Optical Properties and Emerging Applications of Gold Nanostructures

The collective oscillation of free electrons at the nanoscale surface of gold nanostructures is closely modulated by tuning the size, shape/morphology, phase, composition, hybridization, assembly, and nanopatterning, along with the surroundings of the plasmonic surface located at a dielectric interface with air, liquid, and solid. This review first introduces the physical origin of the intrinsic optical properties of gold nanostructures and further summarizes stimuli-responsive changes in optical properties, metal-field-enhanced optical signals, luminescence spectral shaping, chiroptical response, and photogenerated hot carriers. The current success in the landscape of nanoscience and nanotechnology mainly originates from the abundant optical properties of gold nanostructures in the thermodynamically stable face-centered cubic (fcc) phase. It has been further extended by crystal phase engineering to prepare thermodynamically unfavorable phases (e.g., kinetically stable) and heterophases to modulate their intriguing phase-dependent optical properties. A broad range of promising applications, including but not limited to full-color displays, solar energy harvesting, photochemical reactions, optical sensing, and microscopic/biomedical imaging, have fostered parallel research on the multitude of physical effects occurring in gold nanostructures.

Recent Advances in Phase-Engineered Photocatalysts: Classification and Diversified Applications

Phase engineering is an emerging strategy for tuning the electronic states and catalytic functions of nanomaterials. Great interest has recently been captured by phase-engineered photocatalysts, including the unconventional phase, amorphous phase, and heterophase. Phase engineering of photocatalytic materials (including semiconductors and cocatalysts) can effectively affect the light absorption range, charge separation efficiency, or surface redox reactivity, resulting in different catalytic behavior. The applications for phase-engineered photocatalysts are widely reported, for example, hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution, CO₂ reduction, and organic pollutant removal. This review will firstly provide a critical insight into the classification of phase engineering for photocatalysis. Then, the state-of-the-art development of phase engineering toward photocatalytic reactions will be presented, focusing on the synthesis and characterization methodologies for unique phase structure and the correlation between phase structure and photocatalytic performance. Finally, personal understanding of the current opportunities and challenges of phase engineering for photocatalysis will also be provided.

Homogeneous Metastable Hexagonal Phase Iridium Enhances Hydrogen Evolution Catalysis

Catalytic reactions are surface-sensitive processes. Fabrication of homogeneous metastable metals can be used to promote phase-dependent catalytic performance; however, this has been a challenging task. Herein, homogeneous metastable hexagonal close-packed (hcp) Ir is epitaxially grown onto metastable phase hcp Ni, as demonstrated using spherical aberration electron microscopy. The as-fabricated metastable hcp Ir exhibits high intrinsic activity for the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In particular, metastable hcp Ir delivers a low overpotential of 17 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and presents a high specific activity of 8.55 mA cm-2 and a high turnover frequency of 38.26 s-1 at -0.07 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. Owing to its epitaxially grown structure, metastable hcp Ir is highly stable. Theoretical calculations reveal that metastable hcp Ir promotes H2 O adsorption and fast H2 O dissociation, which contributes to its remarkable HER activity. Findings can elucidate the crystal phase-controlled synthesis of advanced noble metal nanomaterials for the fundamental catalytic applications.

Defect engineering of two-dimensional materials for advanced energy conversion and storage

In the global trend towards carbon neutrality, sustainable energy conversion and storage technologies are of vital significance to tackle the energy crisis and climate change. However, traditional electrode materials gradually reach their property limits. Two-dimensional (2D) materials featuring large aspect ratios and tunable surface properties exhibit tremendous potential for improving the performance of energy conversion and storage devices. To rationally control the physical and chemical properties for specific applications, defect engineering of 2D materials has been investigated extensively, and is becoming a versatile strategy to promote the electrode reaction kinetics. Simultaneously, exploring the in-depth mechanisms underlying defect action in electrode reactions is crucial to provide profound insight into structure tailoring and property optimization. In this review, we highlight the cutting-edge advances in defect engineering in 2D materials as well as their considerable effects in energy-related applications. Moreover, the confronting challenges and promising directions are discussed for the development of advanced energy conversion and storage systems.

Research Advances in Amorphous-Crystalline Heterostructures Toward Efficient Electrochemical Applications

Interface engineering of heterostructures has proven a promising strategy to effectively modulate their physicochemical properties and further improve the electrochemical performance for various applications. In this context related research of the newly proposed amorphous-crystalline heterostructures have lately surged since they combine the superior advantages of amorphous- and crystalline-phase structures, showing unusual atomic arrangements in heterointerfaces. Nonetheless, there has been much less efforts in systematic analysis and summary of the amorphous-crystalline heterostructures to examine their complicated interfacial interactions and elusory active sites. The critical structure-activity correlation and electrocatalytic mechanism remain rather elusive. In this review, the recent advances of amorphous-crystalline heterostructures in electrochemical energy conversion and storage fields are amply discussed and presented, along with remarks on the challenges and perspectives. Initially, the fundamental characteristics of amorphous-crystalline heterostructures are introduced to provide scientific viewpoints for structural understanding. Subsequently, the superiorities and current achievements of amorphous-crystalline heterostructures as highly efficient electrocatalysts/electrodes for hydrogen evolution reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, supercapacitor, lithium-ion battery, and lithium-sulfur battery applications are elaborated. At the end of this review, future outlooks and opportunities on amorphous-crystalline heterostructures are also put forward to promote their further development and application in the field of clean energy.

Direct Observation of Off-Stoichiometry-Induced Phase Transformation of 2D CdSe Quantum Nanosheets

Crystal structures determine material properties, suggesting that crystal phase transformations have the potential for application in a variety of systems and devices. Phase transitions are more likely to occur in smaller crystals; however, in quantum-sized semiconductor nanocrystals, the microscopic mechanisms by which phase transitions occur are not well understood. Herein, the phase transformation of 2D CdSe quantum nanosheets caused by off-stoichiometry is revealed, and the progress of the transformation is directly observed by in situ transmission electron microscopy. The initial hexagonal wurtzite-CdSe nanosheets with atomically uniform thickness are transformed into cubic zinc blende-CdSe nanosheets. A combined experimental and theoretical study reveals that electron-beam irradiation can change the stoichiometry of the nanosheets, thereby triggering phase transformation. The loss of Se atoms induces the reconstruction of surface atoms, driving the transformation from wurtzite-CdSe(11 2 ¯ $\bar{2}$ 0) to zinc blende-CdSe(001) 2D nanocrystals. Furthermore, during the phase transformation, unconventional dynamic phenomena occur, including domain separation. This study contributes to the fundamental understanding of the phase transformations in 2D quantum-sized semiconductor nanocrystals.

Two-Dimensional Metal Nanostructures: From Theoretical Understanding to Experiment

This paper reviews recent studies on the preparation of two-dimensional (2D) metal nanostructures, particularly nanosheets. As metal often exists in the high-symmetry crystal phase, such as face centered cubic structures, reducing the symmetry is often needed for the formation of low-dimensional nanostructures. Recent advances in characterization and theory allow for a deeper understanding of the formation of 2D nanostructures. This Review firstly describes the relevant theoretical framework to help the experimentalists understand chemical driving forces for the synthesis of 2D metal nanostructures, followed by examples on the shape control of different metals. Recent applications of 2D metal nanostructures, including catalysis, bioimaging, plasmonics, and sensing, are discussed. We end the Review with a summary and outlook of the challenges and opportunities in the design, synthesis, and application of 2D metal nanostructures.

Pd-Based Metallenes for Fuel Cell Reactions

Pd-based metallenes, atomically thin layers composed primarily of under-coordinated Pd atoms, have emerged as the newest members in the family of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials. Moreover, the unique physiochemical properties, high intrinsic activity associated with metallenes coupled with the ease of applying chemical modifications result in great potential in catalyst engineering for fuel cell reactions. Especially in recent years, interest in Pd-based metallenes is growing, as evidenced by surge in available literatures. Herein, we have reviewed the recent findings achieved in Pd-based metallenes in fuel cells by highlighting the technologies available for deriving metallenes and manifesting the modification strategies for designing them to better suit the application demand. Moreover, we also discuss the perspective insights of Pd-based metallenes for fuel cells regarding the surfactant-free synthesis method, strain engineering, constructing high-entropy alloy, and so on.

Surface and Interface Engineering for the Catalysts of Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction

The massive use of fossil fuels releases a great amount of CO₂ , which substantially contributes to the global warming. For the global goal of putting CO₂ emission under control, effective utilization of CO₂ is particularly meaningful. Electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction reaction (eCO₂ RR) has great potential in CO₂ utilization, because it can convert CO₂ into valuable carbon-containing chemicals and feedstock using renewable electricity. The catalyst design for eCO₂ RR is a key challenge to achieving efficient conversion of CO₂ to fuels and useful chemicals. For a typical heterogeneous catalyst, surface and interface engineering is an effective approach to enhance reaction activity. Herein, the development and research progress in CO₂ catalysts with focus on surface and interface engineering are reviewed. First, the fundaments of eCO₂ RR is briefly discussed from the reaction mechanism to performance evaluation methods, introducing the role of the surface and interface engineering of electrocatalyst in eCO₂ RR. Then, several routes to optimize the surface and interface of CO₂ electrocatalysts, including morphology, dopants, atomic vacancies, grain boundaries, surface modification, etc., are reviewed and representative examples are given. At the end of this review, we share our personal views in future research of eCO₂ RR.

Boosting the reaction kinetics in aprotic lithium-carbon dioxide batteries with unconventional phase metal nanomaterials

Given the high energy density and eco-friendly characteristics, lithium-carbon dioxide (Li-CO2) batteries have been considered to be a next-generation energy technology to promote carbon neutral and space exploration. However, Li-CO2 batteries suffer from sluggish reaction kinetics, causing large overpotential and poor energy efficiency. Here, we observe enhanced reaction kinetics in aprotic Li-CO2 batteries with unconventional phase 4H/face-centered cubic (fcc) iridium (Ir) nanostructures grown on gold template. Significantly, 4H/fcc Ir exhibits superior electrochemical performance over fcc Ir in facilitating the round-trip reaction kinetics of Li+-mediated CO2 reduction and evolution, achieving a low charge plateau below 3.61 V and high energy efficiency of 83.8%. Ex situ/in situ studies and theoretical calculations reveal that the boosted reaction kinetics arises from the highly reversible generation of amorphous/low-crystalline discharge products on 4H/fcc Ir via the Ir-O coupling. The demonstration of flexible Li-CO2 pouch cells with 4H/fcc Ir suggests the feasibility of using unconventional phase nanomaterials in practical scenarios.

Phase Engineering of a Ruthenium Nanostructure toward High-Performance Bifunctional Hydrogen Catalysis

The physicochemical properties and catalytic performance of transition metals are highly phase-dependent. Ru-based nanomaterials are superior catalysts toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR), but studies are mostly limited to conventional hexagonal-close-packed (hcp) Ru, mainly arising from the difficulty in synthesizing Ru with pure face-centered-cubic (fcc) phase. Herein, we report a crystal-phase-dependent catalytic study of MoO_x-modified Ru (MoO_x-Ru fcc and MoO_x-Ru hcp) for bifunctional HER and HOR. MoO_x-Ru fcc is proven to outperform MoO_x-Ru hcp in catalyzing both HER and HOR with much higher catalytic activity and more durable stability. The modification effect of MoO_x gives rise to optimal adsorption of H and OH especially on fcc Ru, which thus has resulted in the superior catalytic performance. This work highlights the significance of phase engineering in constructing superior electrocatalysts and may stimulate more efforts on phase engineering of other metal-based materials for diversified applications.

Rare-Earth Single-Atom Catalysts: A New Frontier in Photo/Electrocatalysis

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) provide well-defined active sites with 100% atom utilization, and can be prepared using a wide range of support materials. Therefore, they are attracting global attention, especially in the fields of energy conversion and storage. To date, research has focused on transition-metal and precious-metal-based SACs. More recently, rare-earth (RE)-based SACs have emerged as a new frontier in photo/electrocatalysis owing to their unique electronic structure arising from the spin-orbit coupling of the 4f and valence orbitals, unsaturated coordination environment, and unique behavior as charge-transport bridges. However, a systematic review on the role of the RE active sites, catalytic mechanisms, and synthetic methods for RE SACs is lacking. Therefore, in this review, the latest developments in RE SACs having applications in photo/electrocatalysis are summarized and discussed. First, the theoretical advantages of RE SACs for photo/electrocatalysis are briefly introduced, focusing on the roles of the 4f orbitals and coupled energy levels. In addition, the most recent research progress on RE SACs is summarized for several important photo/electrocatalytic reactions and the corresponding catalytic mechanisms are discussed. Further, the synthetic strategies for the production of RE SACs are reported. Finally, challenges for the development of RE SACs are highlighted, along with future research directions and perspectives.

Mesoporous Gold Nanostructures: Synthesis and Beyond

Mesoporous metal nanostructures have offered multiple advantages that cannot be realized elsewhere. These materials have been attracting more research attention in catalysis and electrocatalysis owing to their functional structures and compositions. Of the various mesoporous metals available, mesoporous gold (mesoAu) nanostructures are of special interest in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and related applications because of their strong electromagnetic field (localized surface plasmon resonance). In the last few decades, various synthesis strategies have been developed to prepare mesoAu nanostructures with controllable morphologies that exhibit fascinating physicochemical properties and increase applications in SERS, catalysis, and electrocatalysis. In this Perspective, we systematically summarize recent advances in synthesis and applications of mesoAu nanostructures. Four synthesis strategies, including dealloying, nanocasting, electrochemical deposition, and intermediate template, are discussed in detail. Moreover, physicochemical properties and promising applications of mesoAu nanostructures are presented. Finally, we describe current challenges and give a general outlook to explore further directions in synthesis and applications of mesoAu nanostructures.

Confined Growth of Silver-Copper Janus Nanostructures with {100} Facets for Highly Selective Tandem Electrocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Reduction

Electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO₂ RR) holds significant potential to promote carbon neutrality. However, the selectivity toward multicarbon products in CO₂ RR is still too low to meet practical applications. Here the authors report the delicate synthesis of three kinds of Ag-Cu Janus nanostructures with {100} facets (JNS-100) for highly selective tandem electrocatalytic reduction of CO₂ to multicarbon products. By controlling the surfactant and reduction kinetics of Cu precursor, the confined growth of Cu with {100} facets on one of the six equal faces of Ag nanocubes is realized. Compared with Cu nanocubes, Ag₆₅ -Cu₃₅ JNS-100 demonstrates much superior selectivity for both ethylene and multicarbon products in CO₂ RR at less negative potentials. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the compensating electronic structure and carbon monoxide spillover in Ag₆₅ -Cu₃₅ JNS-100 contribute to the enhanced CO₂ RR performance. This study provides an effective strategy to design advanced tandem catalysts toward the extensive application of CO₂ RR.

Wet-chemical synthesis of two-dimensional metal nanomaterials for electrocatalysis

Two-dimensional (2D) metal nanomaterials have gained ever-growing research interest owing to their fascinating physicochemical properties and promising application, especially in the field of electrocatalysis. In this review, we briefly introduce the recent advances in wet-chemical synthesis of 2D metal nanomaterials. Subsequently, the catalytic performances of 2D metal nanomaterials in a variety of electrochemical reactions are illustrated. Finally, we summarize current challenges and highlight our perspectives on preparing high-performance 2D metal electrocatalysts.

Amorphous/Crystalline Heterophase Ruthenium Nanosheets for pH-Universal Hydrogen Evolution

To design and synthesize heterophase noble-metal materials is of crucial importance owing to their unique structure and apparent properties. Ruthenium (Ru) is one of the most active candidates for hydrogen evolution reaction because of its low price compared with other precious metals, which is favorable for industrial hydrogen cycle operation. In this study, free-standing amorphous/crystalline Ru nanosheets are facilely synthesized through a controlled annealing method. Charge redistribution occurs at the phase interface because of the work function difference between amorphous and crystalline domains. The resulting structure and property are conductive to the adsorption and dissociation of water molecules, associated with optimized hydrogen interaction and enhanced binding between Ru atoms. Accordingly, electrochemical measurements demonstrate that the amorphous/crystalline heterophase Ru exhibits improved hydrogen evolution efficiency as compared with pure amorphous Ru and pure crystalline Ru, at pH-universal conditions. Specifically, only 16.7 mV overpotential is required to reach 10 mA cm^-2 in 1.0 m KOH. Meanwhile, the heterophase structure displays a higher stability during operation than pure amorphous and crystalline structures. This study demonstrates the importance of phase engineering, broadens the Ru-based material family, and provides more insights for developing efficient metal materials.

Surface Molecular Functionalization of Unusual Phase Metal Nanomaterials for Highly Efficient Electrochemical Carbon Dioxide Reduction under Industry-Relevant Current Density

The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO₂ RR) provides a sustainable strategy to relieve global warming and achieve carbon neutrality. However, the practical application of CO₂ RR is still limited by the poor selectivity and low current density. Here, the surface molecular functionalization of unusual phase metal nanomaterials for high-performance CO₂ RR under industry-relevant current density is reported. It is observed that 5-mercapto-1-methyltetrazole (MMT)-modified 4H/face-centered cubic (fcc) gold (Au) nanorods demonstrate greatly enhanced CO₂ RR performance than original oleylamine (OAm)-capped 4H/fcc Au nanorods in both an H-type cell and flow cell. Significantly, MMT-modified 4H/fcc Au nanorods deliver an excellent carbon monoxide selectivity of 95.6% under the industry-relevant current density of 200 mA cm^-2 . Density functional theory calculations reveal distinct electronic modulations by surface ligands, in which MMT improves while OAm suppresses the surface electroactivity of 4H/fcc Au nanorods. Furthermore, this method can be extended to various MMT derivatives and conventional fcc Au nanostructures in boosting CO₂ RR performance.

Deformation-Induced Phase Transformations in Gold Nanoribbons with the 4H Phase

The mechanical stability of metallic nanomaterials has been intensively studied due to their unique structures and promising applications. Although extensive investigations have been carried out on the deformation behaviors of metallic nanomaterials, the atomic-scale deformation mechanism of metallic nanomaterials with unconventional hexagonal structures remains unclear because of the lack of direct experimental observation. Here, we conduct an atomic-resolution in situ tensile-straining transmission electron microscopy investigation on the deformation mechanism of gold nanoribbons with the 4H (hexagonal) phase. Our results reveal that plastic deformation in the 4H gold nanoribbons comprises three stages, in which both full and partial dislocations are involved. At the early deformation stage, plastic deformation is governed by full dislocation activities. Partial dislocations are subsequently activated in regions that have undergone full dislocation gliding, leading to phase transformation from the 4H phase to the face-centered cubic (FCC) phase. At the last stage of the deformation process, the volume fraction of the FCC phase increases, and full dislocation activities in the FCC regions also play an important role.

Preparation of fcc-2H-fcc Heterophase Pd@Ir Nanostructures for High-Performance Electrochemical Hydrogen Evolution

With the development of phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN), construction of noble-metal heterostructures with unconventional crystal phases, including heterophases, has been proposed as an attractive approach toward the rational design of highly efficient catalysts. However, it still remains challenging to realize the controlled preparation of such unconventional-phase noble-metal heterostructures and explore their crystal-phase-dependent applications. Here, various Pd@Ir core-shell nanostructures are synthesized with unconventional fcc-2H-fcc heterophase (2H: hexagonal close-packed; fcc: face-centered cubic) through a wet-chemical seeded method. As a result, heterophase Pd₆₆ @Ir₃₄ nanoparticles, Pd₄₅ @Ir₅₅ multibranched nanodendrites, and Pd₆₈ @Ir₂₂ Co₁₀ trimetallic nanoparticles are obtained via the phase-selective epitaxial growth of fcc-2H-fcc-heterophase Ir-based nanostructures on 2H-Pd seeds. Importantly, the heterophase Pd₄₅ @Ir₅₅ nanodendrites exhibit excellent catalytic performance toward electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under acidic conditions. An overpotential of only 11.0 mV is required to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 on Pd₄₅ @Ir₅₅ nanodendrites, which is lower than those of the conventional fcc-Pd₄₇ @Ir₅₃ counterparts, commercial Ir/C and Pt/C. This work not only demonstrates an appealing route to synthesize novel heterophase nanomaterials for promising applications in the emerging field of PEN, but also highlights the significant role of the crystal phase in determining their catalytic properties.

Synthesis of Pd3 Sn and PdCuSn Nanorods with L12 Phase for Highly Efficient Electrocatalytic Ethanol Oxidation

The crystal phase of nanomaterials is one of the key parameters determining their physicochemical properties and performance in various applications. However, it still remains a great challenge to synthesize nanomaterials with different crystal phases while maintaining the same composition, size, and morphology. Here, a facile, one-pot, wet-chemical method is reported to synthesize Pd₃ Sn nanorods with comparable size and morphology but different crystal phases, that is, an ordered intermetallic and a disordered alloy with L1₂ and face-centered cubic (fcc) phases, respectively. The crystal phase of the as-synthesized Pd₃ Sn nanorods is easily tuned by altering the types of tin precursors and solvents. Moreover, the approach can also be used to synthesize ternary PdCuSn nanorods with the L1₂ crystal phase. When used as electrocatalysts, the L1₂ Pd₃ Sn nanorods exhibit superior electrocatalytic performance toward the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) compared to their fcc counterpart. Impressively, compared to the L1₂ Pd₃ Sn nanorods, the ternary L1₂ PdCuSn nanorods exhibit more enhanced electrocatalytic performance toward the EOR, yielding a high mass current density up to 6.22 A mg_Pd ^-1 , which is superior to the commercial Pd/C catalyst and among the best reported Pd-based EOR electrocatalysts.

Preparation of Au@Pd Core-Shell Nanorods with fcc-2H-fcc Heterophase for Highly Efficient Electrocatalytic Alcohol Oxidation

Controlled construction of bimetallic nanostructures with a well-defined heterophase is of great significance for developing highly efficient nanocatalysts and investigating the structure-dependent catalytic performance. Here, a wet-chemical synthesis method is used to prepare Au@Pd core-shell nanorods with a unique fcc-2H-fcc heterophase (fcc: face-centered cubic; 2H: hexagonal close-packed with a stacking sequence of "AB"). The obtained fcc-2H-fcc heterophase Au@Pd core-shell nanorods exhibit superior electrocatalytic ethanol oxidation performance with a mass activity as high as 6.82 A mg_Pd^-1, which is 2.44, 6.96, and 6.43 times those of 2H-Pd nanoparticles, fcc-Pd nanoparticles, and commercial Pd/C, respectively. The operando infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy reveals a C2 pathway with fast reaction kinetics for the ethanol oxidation on the prepared heterophase Au@Pd nanorods. Our experimental results together with density functional theory calculations indicate that the enhanced performance of heterophase Au@Pd nanorods can be attributed to the unconventional 2H phase, the 2H/fcc phase boundary, and the lattice expansion of the Pd shell. Moreover, the heterophase Au@Pd nanorods can also serve as an efficient catalyst for the electrochemical oxidation of methanol, ethylene glycol, and glycerol. Our work in the area of phase engineering of nanomaterials (PENs) opens the way for developing high-performance electrocatalysts toward future practical applications.

Seeded Synthesis of Unconventional 2H-Phase Pd Alloy Nanomaterials for Highly Efficient Oxygen Reduction

Crystal phase engineering of noble-metal-based alloy nanomaterials paves a new way to the rational synthesis of high-performance catalysts for various applications. However, the controlled preparation of noble-metal-based alloy nanomaterials with unconventional crystal phases still remains a great challenge due to their thermodynamically unstable nature. Herein, we develop a robust and general seeded method to synthesize PdCu alloy nanomaterials with unconventional hexagonal close-packed (hcp, 2H type) phase and also tunable Cu contents. Moreover, galvanic replacement of Cu by Pt can be further conducted to prepare unconventional trimetallic 2H-PdCuPt nanomaterials. Impressively, 2H-Pd₆₇Cu₃₃ nanoparticles possess a high mass activity of 0.87 A mg^-1_Pd at 0.9 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)) in electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) under alkaline condition, which is 2.5 times that of the conventional face-centered cubic (fcc) Pd₆₉Cu₃₁ counterpart, revealing the important role of crystal phase on determining the ORR performance. After the incorporation of Pt, the obtained 2H-Pd₇₁Cu₂₂Pt₇ catalyst shows a significantly enhanced mass activity of 1.92 A mg^-1_Pd+Pt at 0.9 V (vs RHE), which is 19.2 and 8.7 times those of commercial Pt/C and Pd/C, placing it among the best reported Pd-based ORR electrocatalysts under alkaline conditions.

Rational synthesis and lithium storage properties of hierarchical nanoporous TiO2(B) assemblies with tailored crystallites and architectures

In comparison to the common anatase, rutile and brookite phases, the bronze phase TiO₂ (TiO₂(B)) is rarely prepared, and obtaining unique TiO₂(B) structures, especially those with complex configurations remains a great challenge. This work presents a completely new synthetic approach for fabricating hierarchical nanoporous TiO₂(B) assemblies with tailored crystallites and architectures via the reaction between tetrabutyl titanate and normal fatty acids. Three different kinds of normal fatty acids, i.e., pentanoic acid, hexanoic acid, and nonanoic acid were utilized as the sole solvent. After a simple solvothermal treatment, nanoporous TiO₂(B) microspheres constructed by [001]-elongated ultrathin nanorods, randomly aggregated ultrafine nanocrystals, and crystallographically oriented nanocrystals were successfully produced separately. Further investigation revealed that the morphology of the hierarchical assemblies could be modified by using foreign substrates to adjust the growth dynamics of TiO₂(B) crystals. As a good illustration, by introducing graphene nanosheets into the tetrabutyl titanate-pentanoic acid system, nanosized [001]-elongated-ultrathin-nanorod-constructed nanoporous TiO₂(B) assemblies were obtained, which exhibited superior performance as an anode in Li-ion batteries. This work can not only shed new light on TiO₂(B) crystallization, but also provide an effective solution for the rational design of complex TiO₂(B) micro-/nanoarchitectures for desired applications.

Gold Nanomaterials as a Promising Integrated Tool for Diagnosis and Treatment of Pathogenic Infections-A Review

This review summarizes research on functionalized gold nanomaterials as pathogen detection sensors and pathogen elimination integrated tools. After presenting the challenge of current severe threat from pathogenic bacteria and the increasingly serious growth rate of drug resistance, the first section mainly introduces the conspectus of gold nanostructures from synthesis, characterization, physicochemical properties and applications of gold nanomaterials. The next section deals with gold nanomaterials-based pathogen detection sensors such as colorimetric sensors, fluorescence sensors and Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering sensors. We then discuss strategies based on gold nanomaterials for eliminating pathogenic infections, such as the dual sterilization strategy for grafting gold nanomaterials with antibacterial substances, photothermal antibacterial and photodynamic antibacterial methods. The fourth part briefly introduces the comprehensive strategy for diagnosis and sterilization of pathogen infection based on gold nanomaterials, such as the diagnosis and treatment strategy for pathogen infection using Roman signals real-time monitoring and photothermal sterilization. A concluding section that summarizes the current status and challenges of the novel diagnosis and treatment integrated strategy for pathogenic infections, gives an outlook on potential future perspectives.

Selective Epitaxial Growth of Rh Nanorods on 2H/fcc Heterophase Au Nanosheets to Form 1D/2D Rh-Au Heterostructures for Highly Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

Phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN) enables the preparation of metal nanomaterials with unconventional phases that are different from their thermodynamically stable counterparts. These unconventional-phase nanomaterials can serve as templates to construct precisely controlled metallic heterostructures for wide applications. Nevertheless, how the unconventional phase of templates affects the nucleation and growth of secondary metals still requires systematic explorations. Here, two-dimensional (2D) square-like Au nanosheets with an unconventional 2H/face-centered cubic (fcc) heterophase, composing of two pairs of opposite edges with 2H/fcc heterophase and fcc phase, respectively, and two 2H/fcc heterophase basal planes, are prepared and then used as templates to grow one-dimensional (1D) Rh nanorods. The effect of different phases in different regions of the Au templates on the overgrowth of Rh nanorods has been systematically investigated. By tuning the reaction conditions, three types of 1D/2D Rh-Au heterostructures are prepared. In the type A heterostructure, Rh nanorods only grow on the fcc defects including stacking faults and/or twin boundaries (denoted as fcc-SF/T) and 2H phases in two 2H/fcc edges of the Au nanosheet. In the type B heterostructure, Rh nanorods grow on the fcc-SF/T and 2H phases in two 2H/fcc edges and two 2H/fcc basal planes of the Au nanosheet. In the type C heterostructure, Rh nanorods grow on four edges and two basal planes of the Au nanosheet. Furthermore, the type C heterostructure shows promising performance toward the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic media, which is among the best reported Rh-based and other noble-metal-based HER electrocatalysts.

Quasi-Epitaxial Growth of Magnetic Nanostructures on 4H-Au Nanoribbons

Phase engineering of nanomaterials is an effective strategy to tune the physicochemical properties of nanomaterials for various promising applications. Herein, by using the 4H-Au nanoribbons as templates, four novel magnetic nanostructures, namely 4H-Au @ 14H-Co nanobranches, 4H-Au @ 14H-Co nanoribbons, 4H-Au @ 2H-Co nanoribbons, and 4H-Au @ 2H-Ni nanoribbons, are synthesized based on the quasi-epitaxial growth. Different from the conventional epitaxial growth of metal nanomaterials, the obtained Co and Ni nanostructures possess different crystal phases from the Au template. Due to the large lattice mismatch between Au and the grown metals (i.e., Co and Ni), ordered misfit dislocations are generated at the Co/Au and Ni/Au interfaces. Notably, a new super-structure of Co is formed, denoted as 14H. Both 4H-Au @ 14H-Co nanobranches and nanoribbons are ferromagnetic at room temperature, showing similar Curie temperature. However, their magnetic behaviors exhibit distinct temperature dependence, resulting from the competition between spin and volume fluctuations as well as the unique geometry. This work paves the way to the templated synthesis of nanomaterials with unconventional crystal phases for the exploration of phase-dependent properties.
