The Larger Linear N-Heteroacenes

Bisphosphonium Benzene Diimides

The incorporation of cationic groups onto electron-poor compounds is a viable strategy for achieving potent electron acceptors, as evidenced by reports of air-stable radical forms of large aromatic diimides such as naphthalene and perylene diimides. These ions have also been observed to exhibit anion-π interaction tendencies of interest in molecular recognition applications. The benefits of phosphonium incorporation, however, have not yet been extended to the smallest benzene diimides. Here, we report that dibrominated pyromellitic diimide and mellophanic diimide both readily undergo substitution reactions with phosphine sources to yield bisphosphonium compounds. In the single crystalline form, these dications display anion-π interactions and, in the case of mellophanic diimide, the stabilization of a bromide-water H-bonding ring pattern. The reaction of these dications with chemical reductants readily provides the singly and doubly reduced redox states, which were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy and found to exhibit intense absorptions extending into the near-IR region. Taken together, this work demonstrates that phosphonium incorporation onto congested aromatic diimide scaffolds is synthetically viable and produces unusual electron-poor compounds.

Covalently Linked 5,6,11,12-Tetraazanaphthacene Dimer and Its Triptycene-Capped Derivatives as Electron Acceptors

The development of electron transport and n-type materials is still largely dominated by a limited number of organic semiconductors, with fullerenes at the forefront. In contrast, substantial progress has been made in developing hole transport and p-type materials. Therefore, expanding the range of electron acceptors, making them solution-processable, and elucidating their structural arrangement by X-ray crystallography is essential. We synthesised 2,2'-bi-(5,6,11,12-tetraazanaphthacene) (bi-TANC) and its triptycene end-capped derivative, 2,2'-bi(8,13-dihydro-8,13-[1,2]benzenonaphtho-5,6,15,16-tetraazanaphthacene) (bi-TpTANC), as electron acceptors. Bi-TANC exhibits a herringbone-like crystal packing with intermolecular π-π overlap, which is observed in typical organic n-type semiconductors. However, it showed poor solubility, similar to larger acenes. In contrast, bi-TpTANC exhibited favourable solubility, and its electrochemistry in solution was investigated. In the cyclic voltammogram of bi-TpTANC, reversible redox waves corresponding to 3-step/4-electron transfer were observed at -0.795 V (1e-), -0.927 V (1e-), and -1.44 V (2e-) as half-wave potentials. The redox wave associated with the two-electron transfer on the negative low-potential side indicates the presence of through-bond charge delocalisation in the monoanionic state. Furthermore, the LUMO level of bi-TpTANC is -4.1 eV, which indicates its potential as a promising air-stable n-type material.

An aza-Diels-Alder approach to nitrogen-containing tetrabenzoacene derivatives

Acenes and N-heteroacenes have been synthesized and studied for over a century because of their fundamentally interesting materials properties and promise for device applications. Within this context, our laboratory has previously synthesized nitrogen-containing tetrabenzo[de,hi,op,st]pentacenes via an aza-Diels-Alder reaction-based approach, and herein, we expand our methodology to obtain substituted, expanded, functionalized, and dimeric tetrabenzoacenes. Overall, our study adds to the limited number of tetrabenzoacene derivatives reported to date and may open further opportunities for these materials in organic optoelectronics applications.

Molecular "backbone surgery" of electron-deficient heteroarenes based on dithienopyrrolobenzothiadiazole: conformation-dependent crystal structures and charge transport properties

Electron-deficient heteroarenes based on dithienopyrrolobenzothiadiazole (BTP) have been highly attractive due to their fascinating packing structures, broad absorption profiles, and promising applications in non-fullerene organic solar cells. However, the control of their crystal structures for superior charge transport still faces big challenges. Herein, a conformation engineering strategy is proposed to rationally manipulate the single crystal structure of BTP-series heteroarenes. The parent molecule BTPO-c has a 3D network crystal structure, which originates from its banana-shaped conformation. Subtracting one thiophene moiety from the central backbone leads to a looser brickwork crystal structure of the derivative BTPO-z because of its interrupted angular-shaped conformation. Further subtracting two thiophene moieties results in the derivative BTPO-l with a compact 2D-brickwork crystal structure due to its quasi-linear conformation with a unique dimer packing structure and short π-π stacking distance (3.30 Å). Further investigation of charge-transport properties via single-crystal organic transistors demonstrates that the compact 2D-brickwork crystal structure of BTPO-l leads to an excellent electron mobility of 3.5 cm2 V-1 s-1, much higher than that of BTPO-c with a 3D network (1.9 cm2 V-1 s-1) and BTPO-z with a looser brickwork structure (0.6 cm2 V-1 s-1). Notably, this study presents, for the first time, an elegant demonstration of the tunable single crystal structures of electron-deficient heteroarenes for efficient organic electronics.

Synthesis and electronic properties of nitrogen-rich nanographene

A polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon displaying twelve edge nitrogen centers for a 42 π-electron system is reported. This compound was synthesized via Sonogashira coupling of pyrimidine precursors, [2+2+2] cycloaddition of bis(aryl) alkynes, and anionic cyclodehydrogenation. Spectroscopy, electrochemistry, and computational results suggest a narrowing of the HOMO-LUMO gap compared to the N-free analogue. Metal coordination affects the optical properties of the extended π system.

How to Stabilize Large Soluble (Hetero-)Acenes

The higher acenes and azaacenes (>(aza)heptacenes) are fascinating, yet elusive materials. Their reactivity and sensitivity increases concomitantly with their size. In recent years, confinement techniques, that is isolation of acenes in matrices and on surfaces, has surpassed solution-based chemistry with respect to accessing the larger (hetero)acenes at the price of the accessibility of no more than a couple thousands of molecules. Isolating acenes in bulk quantities and in processable form is vital for applications in organic electronics as well as from a viewpoint from basic research. In this Perspective, we will discuss after a short historical outline their degradation pathways, and then will selectively highlight recent efforts in stabilizing soluble (aza)acenes.

Molecular engineering of 3-arylated tetrazo[1,2-b]indazoles: divergent synthesis and structure-property relationships

The synthetic scope of 3-arylated tetrazo[1,2-b]indazoles is reported based on a Pd-catalyzed Liebeskind-Srogl cross-coupling reaction followed by an N-cyclisation process. The reactivity of the nitrogen atoms was used to further diversify these N-rich polyaromatic tetrazo[1,2-b]indazoles in a panel of reactions (protonation, selective oxidation, metallations). Selective ortho-C-H activation/functionalization on the heterocycle was also demonstrated with three transition metals (TM = Pd, Ir and Rh). The effects of all these molecular engineering strategies, particularly the N-modifications, on the optical and redox properties of the 3-arylated tetrazoindazoles were studied experimentally and theoretically. This study highlights the diversity of molecular structures and electronic properties offered by the tetrazo[1,2-b]indazole platform.

Determination of energetic positions of electronic states and the exciton dynamics in a π-expanded N-heterotriangulene derivative adsorbed on Au(111)

Bridged triarylamines, so-called N-heterotriangulenes (N-HTAs) are promising organic semiconductors for applications in optoelectronic devices. Thereby the electronic structure at organic/metal interfaces and within thin films as well as the electronically excited states dynamics after optical excitation is essential for the performance of organic-molecule-based devices. Here, we investigated the energy level alignment and the excited state dynamics of a N-HTA derivative adsorbed on Au(111) by means of energy- and time-resolved two-photon photoemission spectroscopy. We quantitatively determined the energetic positions of several occupied and unoccupied molecular (transport levels) and excitonic states (optical gap) in detail. A transport gap of 3.20 eV and an optical gap of 2.58 eV is determined, resulting in an exciton binding energy of 0.62 eV. With the first time-resolved investigation on a N-HTA compound we gained insights into the exciton dynamics and resolved processes on the femtosecond to picosecond timescale.

Modified Donor End Caps for Binary-to-Ternary WORM Memory Conversion in N-Heteroaromatic Systems

A series of novel D-π-A type organic small molecules have been designed, synthesized, and demonstrated for non-volatile resistive switching WORM memory application. The electron-deficient phenazine and quinoxaline units were coupled with various functionalized triphenylamine end caps to explore the structure-property correlations. The photophysical investigations displayed considerable intramolecular charge transfer, and the electrochemical analysis revealed an optimum band gap of 2.44 to 2.83 eV. These factors and the thin film morphological studies suggest the feasibility of the compounds as better resistive memory devices. All the compounds indicated potent non-volatile resistive switching memory capabilities with ON/OFF ratios ranging from 103 to 104, and the lowest threshold voltage recorded stands at -0.74 V. A longer retention time of 103 s marks the substantial stability of the devices. The phenazine-based compounds outperformed the others in terms of memory performance. Exceptionally, the compound with -CHO substituted triphenylamine exhibited ternary memory performance owing to its multiple traps. The resistive switching mechanism for the devices was validated using density functional theory calculations, which revealed that the integrated effect of charge transfer and charge trapping contributes significantly to the resistive switching phenomena.

Naphthalene diimide-Annulated Heterocyclic Acenes: Synthesis, Electrochemical and Semiconductor Properties and their Multifaceted Applications

Acenes and Naphthalene Diimides (NDIs) stand as distinguished classes of organic compounds, each possessing unique and intriguing properties that have garnered significant attention across various scientific disciplines. Acenes, characterized by linearly fused aromatic rings, have captivated researchers due to their diverse electronic structures and promising applications in materials science. On the other hand, NDIs, known for their distinctive electron-accepting properties, exhibit remarkable versatility in fields ranging from organic electronics, supramolecular to spin chemistry. In this review, we navigate through the fascinating realms of both acenes and NDIs before converging our focus on the highly diverse and distinctive subgroup of NDI-annulated heterocyclic acenes. This potentially important subgroup, has emerged as a subject of intense investigation, encapsulating their fascinating synthesis, optical and electrochemical characteristics, and multifaceted applications that span the realms of chemistry, physics, and biology. Through the exploration of their synthetic strategies, unique properties, and diverse applications, this review aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of the pivotal role played by NDI-based heterocyclic acenes in contemporary multidisciplinary research and technological innovation.

Elucidating the Polymorphism of Xanthone: A Crystallization and Characterization Study

The aim of this work is to shed light on the polymorphism of xanthones, a class of oxygenated molecules well known for their bioactivity, including antioxidant, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory effects. Understanding the polymorphism of xanthones can enable the design of novel solid products for pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and agrochemical applications. Prior to this work, two entries accounting for different space groups were deposited for 9-xanthone in the Cambridge Structure Database (CSD): an orthorhombic P212121 and a monoclinic P21 structure solved at room and low temperatures, respectively. However, the very high similarity between these two structures and the lack of clear differences in their physical properties (e.g., thermal behavior) suggested the possibility of the existence of only one crystal structure. In fact, the differences shown in the literature data might be related to the chosen operating parameters, as well as the instrumental resolution of the single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments. In the work presented here, the ambiguity in the polymorphism of xanthone is investigated using thermal analysis, powder and synchrotron single-crystal XRD, and optical microscopy. Additionally, a workflow for the correct identification of twinned crystal structures, which can be applied to other polymorphic systems, is presented. Such workflow combines the collection of a large data set of high-resolution diffraction patterns using synchrotron radiation with the use of principal component analysis, a dimensionality reduction technique, for a quick and effective identification of phase transitions happening during the data collection. Crystallization experiments were designed to promote the formation of different crystal structures of xanthone that were recrystallized based on past literature and beyond.

U-shaped stereoscopic design strategy toward N-doped nanographene segment

There have been scarce reports about stereoscopic design of N-heteroacenes (NHAs), especially for the electron-deficient π-building blocks. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of a U-shaped bis(pyrene-quinoxaline) (BPQ). Single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals the herringbone stacking pattern and the presence of regular and incompletely closed pores.

Manipulating Intramolecular Charge Transfer and Supramolecular Interaction in D-A-D Conjugated Systems by Regioisomerization

Three new donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) architecture regioisomers comprising a large planar electron-withdrawing core tribenzo[a,c,i]phenazine and two identical electron-donating triphenylamines with different substitution patterns were designed and synthesized. Employing this regioisomerization strategy, the intramolecular charge-transfer interactions are effectively tuned and result in a significant bathochromic shift of photoluminescence maximum over 100 nm, which induces the corresponding emission band extending into the near-infrared region as well as giving a high solid-state quantum yield of 25%. Meanwhile, it is found that the supramolecular interactions of this series of regioisomers with planar electron-donor pyrene are greatly affected by the substitution pattern.

The Electronic Structures of Azaphenanthrenes and Their Dimers

Insertion of a nitrogen atom modifies the electronic structures and photochemistry of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by introducing nπ* states into the molecules. To better understand the electronic structures of isolated polycyclic aromatic nitrogen-containing hydrocarbons (PANHs) and their dimers as well as the influence of the position of the nitrogen atom in the molecule, we investigate three different azaphenanthrenes, benzo[f]quinoline, benzo[h]quinoline, and phenanthridine, in a joint experimental and computational study. Experimentally, resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) spectroscopy is applied to characterize the excited electronic states. The REMPI spectra of the azaphenanthrene monomers have a rather similar appearance, with origins between 3.645 and 3.670 eV for the 1ππ* ← S0 transition. In contrast to the phenanthrene parent, 2ππ* ← S0 is broad and unstructured even at the band origin. The experiments are accompanied by density functional theory computation, and vibrationally resolved spectra are simulated using a time-independent approach. The differences between phenanthrene and the azaphenanthrenes are assigned to perturbations due to the low-lying 1(nπ*) state, which accelerates nonradiative deactivation. For the dimers, it is found that two π-stacked isomers with two electronic transitions each contribute to the electronic spectrum, leading to overlapping bands that are difficult to assign.

Rh(III)-catalyzed selective mono- and dual-functionalization/cyclization of 1-aryl-5-aminopyrazoles with iodonium ylides

An efficient Rh(III)-catalyzed selective mono- and dual-C-H bond functionalization/cyclization with iodonium ylide as a single coupling partner was demonstrated, in which fused benzodiazepine skeletons were obtained in excellent yields. This method greatly improved an effective approach to dual C-H unsymmetrical functionalization.

Octopus-inspired deception and signaling systems from an exceptionally-stable acene variant

Multifunctional platforms that can dynamically modulate their color and appearance have attracted attention for applications as varied as displays, signaling, camouflage, anti-counterfeiting, sensing, biomedical imaging, energy conservation, and robotics. Within this context, the development of camouflage systems with tunable spectroscopic and fluorescent properties that span the ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared spectral regions has remained exceedingly challenging because of frequently competing materials and device design requirements. Herein, we draw inspiration from the unique blue rings of the Hapalochlaena lunulata octopus for the development of deception and signaling systems that resolve these critical challenges. As the active material, our actuator-type systems incorporate a readily-prepared and easily-processable nonacene-like molecule with an ambient-atmosphere stability that exceeds the state-of-the-art for comparable acenes by orders of magnitude. Devices from this active material feature a powerful and unique combination of advantages, including straightforward benchtop fabrication, competitive baseline performance metrics, robustness during cycling with the capacity for autonomous self-repair, and multiple dynamic multispectral operating modes. When considered together, the described exciting discoveries point to new scientific and technological opportunities in the areas of functional organic materials, reconfigurable soft actuators, and adaptive photonic systems.

Biphenylene-containing polycyclic conjugated compounds

There has been a growing emphasis on the synthesis of polycyclic conjugated compounds, driven by their distinct structural characteristics that make them valuable candidates for use in cutting-edge technologies. In particular, acenes, a subgroup of polycyclic aromatic compounds, are sought-after synthetic targets due to their remarkable optoelectronic properties which stem from their π-conjugation and planar structure. Despite all these promising characteristics, acenes exhibit significant stability problems when their conjugation enhances. Various approaches have been developed to address this stability concern. Among these strategies, one involves the incorporation of the biphenylene unit into acene frameworks, limiting the electron delocalization through the antiaromatic four-membered ring. This review gives a brief overview of the methods used in the synthesis of biphenylenes and summarizes the recent studies on biphenylene-containing polycyclic conjugated compounds, elucidating their synthesis, and distinct optoelectronic properties.

A Combination of B- and N-Doped π-Systems Enabling Systematic Tuning of Electronic Structures and Properties

Doping heteroatoms into polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) may alter their structures and thereby physical properties. This study reports the construction of B/N-codoped PAHs via combining the B- and N-doped π-systems. Two π-extended B/N-codoped PAHs were synthesized through the Mallory photoreaction. Both feature a C48 BN2 π-skeleton, which is assembled by linearly fusing three substructures including B-doped and sp2 -hybridized N-doped π-moieties and one pyrene unit. In comparison to the pristine B-doped analog, their intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) states are distinctly modulated by the fused N-doped π-system and the further incorporated cyano group, leading to their tunable optical properties, as revealed by detailed theoretical and experimental analysis. Furthermore, these three molecules have sufficient Lewis acidity and can coordinate with Lewis base to form Lewis acid-base adducts, and notably, such intermolecular complexation can further dynamically modulate their ICT transitions and thereby photophysical properties, such as producing blue, green and red fluorescence.

Functionalization of Pentacene: A Facile and Versatile Approach to Contorted Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

In this work, a facile and versatile strategy for the synthesis of contorted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) starting from the functionalized pentacene was established. A series of novel PAHs 1-4 and their derivatives were synthesized through a simple two-step synthesis procedure involving an intramolecular reductive Friedel-Crafts cyclization of four newly synthesized pentacene aldehydes 5-8 as a key step. All the molecules were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and their photophysical and electrochemical properties were studied in detail. Interestingly, the most striking feature of 1-4 is their highly contorted carbon structures and the accompanying helical chirality. In particular, the optical resolution of 2 was successfully achieved by chiral-phase HPLC, and the enantiomers were characterized by circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence spectroscopy. Despite the highly nonplanar conformations, these contorted PAHs exhibited emissive properties with moderate-to-good fluorescence quantum yields, implying the potential utility of this series PAHs as high-quality organic laser dyes. By using a self-assembly method with the help of epoxy resin, a bottle microlaser based on 3 a was successfully illustrated with a lasing wavelength of 567.8 nm at a threshold of 0.3 mJ/cm2 . We believe that this work will shed light on the chemical versatility of pentacene and its derivatives in the construction of novel functionalized PAHs.

Unraveling Triplet Formation Mechanisms in Acenothiophene Chromophores

The evolution of molecular platforms for singlet fission (SF) chromophores has fueled the quest for new compounds capable of generating triplets quantitatively at fast time scales. As the exploration of molecular motifs for SF has diversified, a key challenge has emerged in identifying when the criteria for SF have been satisfied. Here, we show how covalently bound molecular dimers uniquely provide a set of characteristic optical markers that can be used to distinguish triplet pair formation from processes that generate an individual triplet. These markers are contained within (i) triplet charge-transfer excited state absorption features, (ii) kinetic signatures of triplet-triplet annihilation processes, and (iii) the modulation of triplet formation rates using bridging moieties between chromophores. Our assignments are verified by time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements, which directly identify triplet pairs by their electron spin and polarization patterns. We apply these diagnostic criteria to dimers of acenothiophene derivatives in solution that were recently reported to undergo efficient intermolecular SF in condensed media. While the electronic structure of these heteroatom-containing chromophores can be broadly tuned, the effect of their enhanced spin-orbit coupling and low-energy nonbonding orbitals on their SF dynamics has not been fully determined. We find that SF is fast and efficient in tetracenothiophene but that anthradithiophene exhibits fast intersystem crossing due to modifications of the singlet and triplet excited state energies upon functionalization of the heterocycle. We conclude that it is not sufficient to assign SF based on comparisons of the triplet formation kinetics between monomer and multichromophore systems.

Synthesis, Molecular Packing and Semiconductor Properties of V-Shaped N-Heteroacene Dimers

This article presents two groups of V-shaped π-scaffolds that consist of two N-heteroacene units fused with either a rigid or flexible eight-membered ring. These rigid and flexible N-heteroacene dimers were synthesized through the condensation of tetraphenylenetetraone with the corresponding diamine and the Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling of tetrabromodibenzo[a,e]cyclooctatetraene with the corresponding diamine, respectively. A comparison of electronic structures and properties of the two groups of V-shaped N-heteroacene dimers shows subtle difference between the rigid and flexible eight-membered ring linkers in forming extended π-systems. X-ray crystallography of these V-shaped molecules has revealed interesting π-π interaction modes, which are dependent on the central connecting units and substituting groups. These π-π interactions between the V-shaped π-scaffolds have enabled the molecules to function as organic semiconductors in solution-processed field effect transistors.

Synthesis and Properties of 5-Azaullazines

5-Azaullazines, indolizino[6,5,4,3-ija][1,5]naphthyridines, and their benzo-fused analogues were prepared in three steps by combination of Pd catalyzed cross-coupling reactions with Brønsted acid mediated cycloisomerisations. The reaction tolerates various substitution patterns and functional groups and proceeds in high yields. Optical and electrochemical properties of selected products were studied experimentally and by DFT calculations.

N-Heteroacenes as an Organic Gain Medium for Room-Temperature Masers

The development of future quantum devices such as the maser, i.e., the microwave analog of the laser, could be well-served by the exploration of chemically tunable organic materials. Current iterations of room-temperature organic solid-state masers are composed of an inert host material that is doped with a spin-active molecule. In this work, we systematically modulated the structure of three nitrogen-substituted tetracene derivatives to augment their photoexcited spin dynamics and then evaluated their potential as novel maser gain media by optical, computational, and electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. To facilitate these investigations, we adopted an organic glass former, 1,3,5-tri(1-naphthyl)benzene to act as a universal host. These chemical modifications impacted the rates of intersystem crossing, triplet spin polarization, triplet decay, and spin-lattice relaxation, leading to significant consequences on the conditions required to surpass the maser threshold.

Empowering boronic acids as hydroxyl synthons for aryne induced three-component coupling reactions

Boronic acids have become one of the most prevalent classes of reagents in modern organic synthesis, displaying various reactivity profiles via C-B bond cleavage. Herein, we describe the utilization of a readily available boronic acid as an efficient surrogate of hydroxide upon activation via fluoride complexation. The hitherto unknown aryne induced ring-opening reaction of cyclic sulfides and three-component coupling of fluoro-azaarenes are developed to exemplify the application value. Different from metal hydroxides or water, this novel hydroxy source displays mild activation conditions, great functionality tolerance and structural tunability, which shall engender a new synthetic paradigm and in a broad context offer new blueprints for organoboron chemistry. Detailed computational studies also recognize the fluoride activation mode, provide in-depth insights into the unprecedented mechanistic pathway and elucidate the reactivity difference of ArB(OH) x F y complexes, which fully support the experimental data.

Easily Switchable 18π-, 19π-, and 20π-Conjugation of Diazaporphyrin Double-Pincer Bispalladium Complexes

Ni^II 3,7,13,17-tetrapyridyl-5,15-diazaporphyrin serves as a double tridentate ligand to Pd^II ions to provide a pincer-type bispalladium complex. Electrochemical analysis revealed that the bispalladium complex shows excellent ability to accept electrons and reversible redox properties due to the coordination of the two cationic Pd^II centers to the meso-nitrogen atoms. We isolated and characterized one- and two-electron reduction species of the bispalladium complex. The 20π antiaromatic nature of the two-electron reduction species was confirmed by ¹ H NMR spectroscopy, UV/Vis-near-IR (NIR) absorption spectra, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. X-ray diffraction revealed highly twisted structures for the bispalladium complexes regardless of the oxidation state.

Using azaacene as an acceptor unit to construct an ultraefficient red fluorophore with an EQE over 40

Azaacenes, which have been known for a long time, are of scientific and practical importance in organic electronics. Azaacenes once shone as the luminophore in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, due to the low exciton utilization efficiency and/or the aggregation induced quenching (ACQ) effect, N-heteroacene based OLEDs generally showed inferior device performance. In this work, azaacene has been revisited and applied as an acceptor for a red fluorophore (AZA-TPA), where the judicious connection pattern between donor and acceptor maximized the harvest of singlet and triplet excitons, resulting in a high photoluminescence efficiency of 94.6% in doped films (3 wt%). In addition, the linearly-fused polycyclic structure contributed to a high horizontal emitting dipole ratio (Θ_‖ = 90%). As a result, an AZA-TPA-based OLED achieved an unprecedented external quantum efficiency of 41.30% at 610 nm. This work will pave a new path for the development of efficient N-heteroacene-based fluorophores.

Pyridine Dimers and Their Low-Temperature Isomerization: A High-Resolution Matrix-Isolation Spectroscopy Study

The bonding between two neutral aromatic compounds, especially small ones, has been controversially debated in the last decades, and terms like "π-stacking" had to be revised. Surprisingly, despite of many experimental and computational work, there is still no clear consensus about the structure of and the bonding in the pyridine dimer. In this work, for different isomeric forms of the pyridine dimer, the structures and bonding were elucidated by combining high-resolution matrix-isolation spectroscopic results with quantum-chemical calculations. High-resolution IR spectra of Ne matrices at 4 K containing pyridine were recorded for different concentrations and upon annealing to 10 and 12 K, relying on three isotopologues of pyridine. The spectra show the presence of hydrogen-bonded, T-shaped, and stacked forms of weakly-bound pyridine dimers. Among these, the hydrogen-bonded isomer is identified as the lowest-energy form. The results provide for the first time conclusive information about the interaction between two pyridine dimers.

The Radical Anion and Dianion of Benzo[3,4]cyclobuta[1,2-b]phenazine

We present the reduction of two azaacenes (a benzo-[3,4]cyclobuta[1,2-b]phenazine and a benzo[3,4]cyclobuta[1,2-b]naphtho[2,3-i]phenazine derivative), featuring a single cyclobutadiene unit, to their radical anions and dianions. The reduced species were produced using potassium naphthalenide in the presence of 18-crown-6 in THF. Crystal structures of the reduced representatives were obtained and their optoelectronic properties evaluated. Charging these 4n Hückel systems gives dianionic 4n + 2 π-electron systems with increased antiaromaticity, according to NICS(1.7)_zz calculations, featuring unusually red-shifted absorption spectra.

Linear π-conjugated polycyclic compounds consisting of four-, five-, and six-membered rings: benzo[1'',2'':3,4;4'',5'':3',4']bis(cyclobuta[1,2-c]thiophene)

Linear π-conjugated polycyclic compounds, BBCTs, containing linearly annulated 5-, 4-, 6-, 4-, and 5-membered rings were produced via copper-mediated double intramolecular coupling reactions. The absorption spectra and electrochemical results confirmed their moderate optical energy gaps and high HOMO energy levels, respectively. In a crystalline state, the BBCT molecules adopt a herringbone structure, while the methylated molecules form slipped one-dimensional columns. The local and global aromaticity of the new polycyclic compounds is discussed based on the experimental results and theoretical predictions. The present fundamental findings are useful for the further design and synthesis of novel π-conjugated polycyclic compounds containing four-membered rings with potential applications in electronic materials.

N-Acenoacenes: Synthesis and Solid-State Properties

Four N-acenoacenes were synthesized and analyzed for their optoelectronic properties and solid-state packings. Two of the regioisomeric acridinoacridines are TIPS-ethynylated, whereas the other pair are Boc- and triflate substituted derivatives. The two TIPS-ethynyldiazaacenoacenes were processed into organic thin-film transistors with saturation hole mobilities reaching 2.9×10^-2  cm² (Vs)^-1 .

Substituted Cyclopentannulated Tetraazapentacenes

Brominated pentannulated dihydrotetraazapentacenes were prepared by gold- or palladium-catalyzed 5-endo-dig cyclization of TIPS-ethynylated dihydrotetraazaacenes (TIPS = triisopropylsilyl). Post-functionalization was demonstrated by Sonogashira alkynylation and Rosenmund-von Braun cyanation. Calculations predict these species to act as n-type semiconductors, which was verified for two derivates through characterization in organic field-effect transistors.

Thiazole fused S,N-heteroacene step-ladder polymeric semiconductors for organic transistors

Ladder-type thiazole-fused S,N-heteroacenes with an extended π-conjugation consisting of six (SN6-Tz) and nine (SN9-Tz) fused aromatic rings have been synthesized and fully characterized. To date, the synthesis of well-defined fused building blocks and polymers of π-conjugated organic compounds based on the thiazole moiety is a considerable synthetic challenge, due to the difficulty in their synthesis. Acceptor-donor building blocks M1 and M2 were successfully polymerized into ladder homopolymers P1-P2 and further copolymerized with a diketopyrrolopyrrole unit to afford step-ladder copolymer P3. The optical, electronic, and thermal properties, in addition to their charge transport behavior in organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs), were investigated. The results showed an interesting effect on the molecular arrangement of the thiazole-based ladder-type heteroacene in the crystal structure revealing skewed π-π-stacking, and expected to possess better p-type semiconducting performance. The polymers all possess good molecular weights and excellent thermal properties. All the polymer-based OTFT devices exhibit annealing temperature dependent performance, and among the polymers P3 exhibits the highest mobility of 0.05 cm2 V-1 s-1.

Stacking Is Favored over Hydrogen Bonding in Azaphenanthrene Dimers

N-Doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have recently emerged as potential organic electronic materials. The function of such materials is determined not only by the intrinsic electronic properties of individual molecules but also by their supramolecular interactions in the solid state. Therefore, a proper characterization of the interactions between the individual units is of interest to materials science since they ultimately govern properties such as excitons and charge transfer. Here, we report a joint experimental and computational study of two azaphenanthrene dimers to determine the structure and the nature of supramolecular interactions in the aggregates. IR/UV double-resonance experiments were carried out using far- and mid-infrared free-electron laser radiation. The experimental spectra are compared with quantum chemical calculations for the lowest-energy π-stacked and hydrogen-bonded structures. The data reveal a preference of the π-stacked structure for the benzo[f]quinoline and the phenanthridine dimer.

Oxidative Cyclodehydrogenation of Trinaphthylamine: Selective Formation of a Nitrogen-Centered Polycyclic π-System Comprising 5- and 7-Membered Rings

We describe a new type of nitrogen-centered polycyclic scaffold comprising a unique combination of 5-, 6-, and 7-membered rings. The compound is accessible through an intramolecular oxidative cyclodehydrogenation of tri(1-naphthyl)amine. To the best of our knowledge this is the very first example of a direct 3-fold cyclization of a triarylamine under oxidative conditions. The unusual ring fusion motif is confirmed by X-ray crystallography and the impact of cyclization on the electronic and photophysical properties is investigated both experimentally and theoretically based on density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. The formation of the unexpected product is rationalized by detailed mechanistic studies on the DFT level. The results suggest the cyclization to occur under kinetic control via a dicationic mechanism.

A Stable Hexaazaoctacene Cruciform σ-Dimer

Buchwald-Hartwig coupling of a triisopropylsilyl (TIPS)-ethynylated dibromo-N,N'-dihydrotetraazapentacene with 1,4-bis(TIPS-ethynyl)-2,3-diaminonaphthalene furnishes a dihydrohexaazaoctacene. Its oxidation with MnO₂ results in a 7,7'-bi(hexaazaoctacenyl). In addition to eight TIPS-ethynyl groups, the bioctacene motif protects the azaoctacene subunits. The biazaoctacenyl displays a τ_1/2 of > 5 d in dilute solution under ambient conditions. In the crystalline state it is persistent for > 10 months.

4nπ Stable Multitasking Azapentacene: Acidochromism, Hole Mobility, and Visible Light Photoresponse

Herein, we describe the synthesis, characterization, and optoelectronic investigation of a stable 4nπ dihydrotetraazapentacene derivative. The neutral dihydrotetraazapentacene contains a 24π-conjugated N-heteroacene core with two phenyl pendants appended thereof. The exceptional stability of this formally antiaromatic π-system is attributed to the fused dihydropyrazine ring, which has ethenamine (enamine) conjugations, and hence, the π-electrons delocalize over the nearly planar azapentacene core to endow with a global aromatic characteristic. The embedded dihydropyrazine also offers an additional Clar's sextet with enhanced aromaticity. The present dihydrotetraazapentacene can be considered as a multitasking N-heteroacene, which showed photoresponsive nature under visible light illumination, acidochromism in solution, and p-type charge transport with an appreciable field-effect hole mobility of 0.02 cm² V^-1 s^-1 and a bulk p-type mobility of 0.98 × 10^-4 cm² V^-1 s^-1 in the space charge-limited regime of operation measured in the hole-only device. Nucleus-independent chemical shift calculation, anisotropy of the induced current density plot, and anisotropic mobility calculation were performed to support the experimental findings.

π-Extended S-Heterocyclic Naphthoquinodimethane with Dual Diradical and Dipolar Character

The 2,6-naphthoquinodimethane (2,6-NQDM) containing S-heterocyclic molecule 6-S was synthesized, and its dual open-shell diradical and dipolar characters were revealed via both experimental and theoretical studies. Unlike the shorter p-quinodimethane (p-QDM)-containing analogue 5-S, which possesses a closed-shell ground state (y₀ = 0%) with small dipolar character, 6-S possesses enhanced dipolar character with a singlet diradical ground state (y₀ = 23.3%) and a thermally accessible triplet excited state (ΔE_ST = -4.13 kcal/mol). Despite this, it displays good stability (t_1/2 = 41days) under ambient air and light conditions due to its distinctive dipolar character and kinetic blocking of reactive sites.

Synthesis of Contorted Polycyclic Conjugated Hydrocarbons via Regioselective Activation of Cyclobutadienoids

Contorted carbon structures have drawn much attention in the past decade for their rich three-dimensional geometries, enhanced solubility, and tunable electronic properties. We report a modular method to synthesize contorted polycyclic conjugated hydrocarbons containing helical moieties in controlled topologies. This strategy leverages our previously reported streamlined synthesis of π-systems containing four-membered cyclobutadienoids (CBDs), whose catalyzed cycloaddition with alkynes affords helical structures. Interestingly, we observed exclusive nonbay region regioselectivity in the C-C bond activation of CBDs in our system, which is opposite to the scarce previous examples of [N]phenylene activation that led to the formation of linear phenacene structures. The quantitative and regioselective nonbay region alkyne cycloaddition yielded a variety of helical carbon structures with their topologies predetermined by the CBD-containing precursor hydrocarbons. The cycloaddition can be inhibited by methyl substituents exocyclic to the four-membered ring, thus allowing selective activation of only certain desired CBD units while leaving the others intact. Calculation elucidated the basis for the observed regioselectivity. The described method provides a new route to multihelical aromatic hydrocarbons with complex yet defined geometries, facilitating the further exploration of such fascinating carbon structures.

Pushing the Length Limit of Dihydrodiboraacenes: Synthesis and Characterizations of Boron-Embedded Heptacene and Nonacene

Boron-embedded heteroacenes (boraacenes) have attracted enormous interest in organic chemistry and materials science. However, extending the skeleton of boraacenes to higher acenes (N≥6) is synthetically challenging because of their limited stability under ambient conditions. Herein, we report the synthesis of boron-embedded heptacene (DBH) and nonacene (DBN) as the hitherto longest boraacenes. The former is highly stable (even after 240 h in tetrahydrofuran), while the latter is air-sensitive with the half-life (t_1/2 ) of 11.8 min. The structures of both compounds are verified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, revealing a linear backbone with an antiaromatic C₄ B₂ core. Photophysical characterizations associated with theoretical calculations indicate that both compounds exhibit highly efficient anti-Kasha emissions. Remarkably, the air-stable DBH manifests an ultrahigh photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 98±2 % and can be chemically reduced to its radical anion and dianion states, implying the value of boron-doped higher acenes as novel functional materials.

High-performance five-ring-fused organic semiconductors for field-effect transistors

Organic molecular semiconductors have been paid great attention due to their advantages of low-temperature processability, low fabrication cost, good flexibility, and excellent electronic properties. As a typical example of five-ring-fused organic semiconductors, a single crystal of pentacene shows a high mobility of up to 40 cm² V^-1 s^-1, indicating its potential application in organic electronics. However, the photo- and optical instabilities of pentacene make it unsuitable for commercial applications. But, molecular engineering, for both the five-ring-fused building block and side chains, has been performed to improve the stability of materials as well as maintain high mobility. Here, several groups (thiophenes, pyrroles, furans, etc.) are introduced to design and replace one or more benzene rings of pentacene and construct novel five-ring-fused organic semiconductors. In this review article, ∼500 five-ring-fused organic prototype molecules and their derivatives are summarized to provide a general understanding of this catalogue material for application in organic field-effect transistors. The results indicate that many five-ring-fused organic semiconductors can achieve high mobilities of more than 1 cm² V^-1 s^-1, and a hole mobility of up to 18.9 cm² V^-1 s^-1 can be obtained, while an electron mobility of 27.8 cm² V^-1 s^-1 can be achieved in five-ring-fused organic semiconductors. The HOMO-LUMO levels, the synthesis process, the molecular packing, and the side-chain engineering of five-ring-fused organic semiconductors are analyzed. The current problems, conclusions, and perspectives are also provided.

Towards Nitrogen‐Rich N‐Heteropolycycles: Synthesis of Octaazaperopyrenes (OAPP)

Ortho substituted octaazaperopyrenes (OAPPs) are a new class of functional dyes characterized by their strong electron‐accepting behavior. Herein, the synthesis, as well as the electrochemical and photo physical properties of an OAPP dye, is reported. The OAPP target was prepared via selective nucleophilic substitution at the peri position of a bay chlorinated tetraazaperylene by introduction of four amino‐substituents. The resulting tetraminoperylene was reacted with different acyl chlorides and anhydrides to give the twisted bay chlorinated OAPP derivatives which were isolated in their reduced dihydro‐form. The OAPP target could be obtained via a palladium catalyzed dehalogenation and a subsequent oxidation. The eightfold isosteric [CH→N] replacement within the peropyrene core structure results in a large decrease of the frontier orbital energies, rendering the target compound a potent oxidant while preserving the planarity of the aromatic core. The radical anion was obtained by reduction of the OAPP with KC₈ and characterized by EPR spectroscopy. A general discussion of the number and location of [CH→N] replacements in peropyrene structures and their frontier orbital energies is provided.
