Abstract
Pd-PEPPSI complexes of N-(4-indolyl)-N'-phenylimidazol-2-ylidene (IIn) ligands with a 5-isopropyl-4-indolyl moiety are synthesized and evaluated in heteroarene C-H arylation, Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling, and Buchwald-Hartwig amination reactions. The IIn-Pd complex bearing a 3,5-diisopropyl-4-indolyl substituent (C5) exhibits the best catalytic activity in this series and substantially outperforms commercial precatalyst PEPPSI-Pd-IPr. The results also suggest that the alkyl group at position 3 of the 4-indolyl moiety shows stronger impacts than that at position 5.

Abstract
In the past eight years, the selective cross-coupling of amides by N-C(O) bond activation has emerged as a highly attractive manifold for the manipulation of traditionally unreactive amide bonds. In this Special Issue on Next-Generation Cross-Coupling Chemistry, we report the Suzuki-Miyaura and Buchwald-Hartwig cross-coupling of amides by selective N-C(O) cleavage catalyzed by bench-stable, well-defined carboxylate Pd(II)-NHC (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) catalysts {[(NHC)Pd(O2CR)2]}. This class of Pd(II)-NHCs promotes cross-coupling under exceedingly mild room-temperature conditions owing to the facile dissociation of the carboxylate ligands to form the active complex. These readily accessible Pd(II)-NHC precatalysts show excellent functional group tolerance and are compatible with a broad range of amide activating groups. Considering the mild conditions for the cross-coupling and the facile access to carboxylate Pd(II)-NHC complexes, we anticipate that this class of bench-stable complexes will find wide application in the activation of amide N-C(O) and related acyl X-C(O) bonds.

Abstract
In this Special Issue, "Featured Papers in Organometallic Chemistry", we report on the synthesis and characterization of [IPr#-PEPPSI], a new, well-defined, highly hindered Pd(II)-NHC precatalyst for cross-coupling reactions. This catalyst was commercialized in collaboration with MilliporeSigma, Burlington, ON, Canada (no. 925489) to provide academic and industrial researchers with broad access to reaction screening and optimization. The broad activity of [IPr#-PEPPSI] in cross-coupling reactions in a range of bond activations with C-N, C-O, C-Cl, C-Br, C-S and C-H cleavage is presented. A comprehensive evaluation of the steric and electronic properties is provided. Easy access to the [IPr#-PEPPSI] class of precatalysts based on modular pyridine ligands, together with the steric impact of the IPr# peralkylation framework, will facilitate the implementation of well-defined, air- and moisture-stable Pd(II)-NHC precatalysts in chemistry research.

Abstract
The Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of amides by selective N-C acyl bond cleavage represents a powerful tool for constructing biaryl ketones from historically inert amide bonds. These amide bond activation reactions hinge upon efficient oxidative addition of the N-C acyl bond to Pd(0). However, in contrast to the well-researched activation of aryl halides by C(sp2)-X oxidative addition, very few studies on the mechanism of C(acyl)-N bond oxidative addition and catalyst effect have been reported. Herein, we report a study on [Pd(NHC)(sulfide)Cl2] catalysts in amide N-C bond activation. These readily prepared, well-defined, air- and moisture-stable Pd(II)-NHC catalysts feature SMe2 (DMS = dimethylsulfide) or S(CH2CH2)2 (THT = tetrahydrothiophene) as ancillary ligands. The reaction development, kinetic studies, and reaction scope are presented. Extensive DFT studies were conducted to gain insight into the mechanism of C(acyl)-N bond oxidative addition and catalyst activation. We expect that [Pd(NHC)(sulfide)Cl2] precatalysts featuring sulfides as well-defined, readily accessible ancillary ligands will find application in C(acyl)-X bond activation in organic synthesis and catalysis.

Abstract
Palladium complexes with one N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and a pyridine ancillary ligand are powerful cross-coupling precatalysts. Herein, we report such complexes with a cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) ligand replacing the NHC. We find that the alleged reduced form, (CAAC)Pd(py), disproportionates to the (CAAC)2Pd0 complex and palladium nanoparticles. This notwithstanding, they are potent catalysts in the Buchwald-Hartwig amination with aryl chlorides under mild conditions (60 °C). In the presence of dioxygen, these complexes catalyze the formation of diazenes from anilines. The catalytic activities of the NHC- and CAAC-supported palladium(0) and palladium(II) complexes are similar in the cross-coupling reaction, yet the CAAC complexes are superior for diazene formation.

Abstract
ItBu (ItBu = 1,3-di-tert-butylimidazol-2-ylidene) represents the most important and most versatile N-alkyl N-heterocyclic carbene available in organic synthesis and catalysis. Herein, we report the synthesis, structural characterization and catalytic activity of ItOct (ItOctyl), C2-symmetric, higher homologues of ItBu. The new ligand class, including saturated imidazolin-2-ylidene analogues has been commercialized in collaboration with MilliporeSigma: ItOct, 929 298; SItOct, 929 492 to enable broad access of the academic and industrial researchers within the field of organic and inorganic synthesis. We demonstrate that replacement of the t-Bu side chain with t-Oct results in the highest steric volume of N-alkyl N-heterocyclic carbenes reported to date, while retaining the electronic properties inherent to N-aliphatic ligands, such as extremely strong σ-donation crucial to the reactivity of N-alkyl N-heterocyclic carbenes. An efficient large-scale synthesis of imidazolium ItOct and imidazolinium SItOct carbene precursors is presented. Coordination chemistry to Au(i), Cu(i), Ag(i) and Pd(ii) as well as beneficial effects on catalysis using Au(i), Cu(i), Ag(i) and Pd(ii) complexes are described. Considering the tremendous importance of ItBu in catalysis, synthesis and metal stabilization, we anticipate that the new class of ItOct ligands will find wide application in pushing the boundaries of new and existing approaches in organic and inorganic synthesis.

Abstract
Various catalysts in homogeneous or heterogeneous catalysis deploy unconventional reaction pathways by lowering the activation energy (AE) barrier, controlling the selectivity, and creating environmental impact, thereby bringing about economic viability. Hence, the study of these methodologies is of immense interest. To develop a new chemistry, there is much scope for the invention of brilliant candidates that could effectively catalyze diverse reaction methodologies. The palladium-catalyzed reactions motivate interesting applications on various organic transformations under mild reaction conditions. Although phosphorous designed ligands or catalysts have been used, despite their expensiveness, sensitivity and other properties, there is the necessity of developing even better cross-coupling ligands or catalysts such as N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-based palladium complexes. These palladium-NHCs (Pd-NHC) are novel and universal nucleophilic entities that have come into light as the most successful class of catalysts in organometallic chemistry. In the same class, a specific category of palladium-NHCs such as palladium-pyridine enhanced pre-catalyst preparation by the stabilization initiation (palladium-PEPPSI) complexes, are emerging as versatile alternatives to phosphine containing palladium complexes for various cross-coupling reactions due to their excellent catalytic activity. Further to mention that NHCs are recently extensively used as ancillary ligands in organometallic chemistry, which includes industrial-related catalytic transformations due to strong σ-donors to metal centres. Apart from this, many NHC-metal complexes are the fascinating consideration in material science as probable metallo-pharmaceuticals. The current review offers a brief exploration of palladium-PEPPSI complexes over the past few years. Further, the synthesis of a variety of these types of catalysts, their applications in Suzuki-Miyaura, Buchwald-Hartwig, Sonogashira, Negishi couplings direct C2-arylation, O-C(O) cleavage, α-arylation/alkylation of carbonyl compounds and trans-amidation reactions via cross-coupling methodologies, which are covered. Additionally, reported recent developments on reusable heterogeneous PdPEPPSI complexes and their catalytic applications are being covered. Finally, the chiral Pd complexes and their asymmetric transformations are discussed.

Abstract
Transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of thioesters by selective acyl C(O)-S cleavage have emerged as a powerful platform for the preparation of complex molecules. Herein, we report divergent Liebeskind-Srogl cross-coupling of thioesters by Pd-NHC (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) catalysis. The reaction provides straightforward access to functionalized ketones by highly selective C(acyl)-S cleavage under mild conditions. Most crucially, the conditions enable direct functionalization of a range of complex pharmaceuticals decorated with a palette of sensitive functional groups, providing attractive products for medicinal chemistry programs. Furthermore, decarbonylative Liebeskind-Srogl cross-coupling by C(acyl)-S/C(aryl)-C(O) cleavage is reported. Cu metal cofactor directs the reaction pathway to acyl or decarbonylative pathway. This reactivity is applicable to complex pharmaceuticals. The reaction represents the mildest decarbonylative Suzuki cross-coupling discovered to date. The Cu-directed divergent acyl and decarbonylative cross-coupling of thioesters opens up chemical space in complex molecule synthesis.

Abstract
The role of N-heterocyclic carbene, a well-known reactive site, in chemical catalysis has long been studied. However, its unique binding and electron-donating properties have barely been explored in other research areas, such as metal capture. Herein, we report the design and preparation of a poly(ionic liquid)-derived porous organic polycarbene adsorbent with superior gold-capturing capability. With carbene sites in the porous network as the "nanotrap", it exhibits an ultrahigh gold recovery capacity of 2.09 g/g. In-depth exploration of a complex metal ion environment in an electronic waste-extraction solution indicates that the polycarbene adsorbent possesses a significant gold recovery efficiency of 99.8%. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy along with nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy reveals that the high performance of the polycarbene adsorbent results from the formation of robust metal-carbene bonds plus the ability to reduce nearby gold ions into nanoparticles. Density functional theory calculations indicate that energetically favourable multinuclear Au binding enhances adsorption as clusters. Life cycle assessment and cost analysis indicate that the synthesis of polycarbene adsorbents has potential for application in industrial-scale productions. These results reveal the potential to apply carbene chemistry to materials science and highlight porous organic polycarbene as a promising new material for precious metal recovery.

Abstract
We report a combined experimental and mechanistic study on the Buchwald-Hartwig amination and C-S/S-H metathesis of aryl sulfides by selective activation of C-S bonds mediated by well-defined, air- and moisture-stable Pd(II)-NHC precatalysts, [Pd(NHC)(μ-Cl)Cl]2. This class of Pd(II)-NHC precatalysts displays excellent activity in the cross coupling of aryl sulfides. Most crucially, we unravel the unified mechanism for activation of C-S bonds in the C-N cross-coupling and C-S metathesis manifolds, where the inert C-S bond serves as a precursor to valuable amine or thioether products.

Abstract
We describe the development of [(NHC)Pd(cinnamyl)Cl] complexes of ImPy (ImPy = imidazo[1,5-a]pyridin-3-ylidene) as a versatile class of precatalysts for cross-coupling reactions. These precatalysts feature fast activation to monoligated Pd(0) with 1:1 Pd to ligand ratio in a rigid imidazo[1,5-a]pyridin-3-ylidene template. Steric matching of the C5-substituent and N2-wingtip in the catalytic pocket of the catalyst framework led to the discovery of ImPyMesDipp as a highly reactive imidazo[1,5-a]pyridin-3-ylidene ligand for Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling of nitroarenes by challenging C-NO2 activation. Kinetic studies demonstrate fast activation and high reactivity of this class of well-defined ImPy-Pd catalysts. Structural studies provide full characteristics of this new class of imidazo[1,5-a]pyridin-3-ylidene ligands. Computational studies establish electronic properties of sterically-restricted imidazo[1,5-a]pyridin-3-ylidene ligands. Finally, a scalable synthesis of C5-substituted imidazo[1,5-a]pyridin-3-ylidene ligands through Ni-catalyzed Kumada cross-coupling is disclosed. The method obviates chromatographic purification at any of the steps, resulting in a facile and modular access to ImPy ligands. We anticipate that well-defined [Pd-ImPy] complexes will find broad utility in organic synthesis and catalysis for activation of unreactive bonds.

Abstract
Investigation of catalytic reactions using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a crucial task, which is often challenging to perform due to rather complex transformations at the metal center. In this work, it was shown that electrophoretic NMR can be a suitable method for studying catalytic reactions and for observing the changes in the catalyst nature. As an important example involving palladium catalysts with N-heterocyclic carbine ligands (NHCs), the breakage of the Pd-NHC bond can occur during the catalytic process. Electrophoretic NMR allows the distinction of compounds in the spectra depending on the charge, thus bringing new opportunities to mechanistic studies. Here, we present independent evidence of R-NHC product formation in the Pd-catalyzed Mizoroki-Heck reaction-the key process for catalyst change from the molecular to nano-scale type.

Abstract
The palladium-based complexes bearing N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand have long attracted attention as active catalysts for many catalytic reactions. Recently, the biological activities of these complexes, which are stable to air and moisture, have also been wondered. With the aim, we report the synthesis of a series of (NHC)Pd(Br2)(L) complexes (NHC: 1,3-dibenzylbenzimidazolium, L: morpholine, triphenylphosphine, pyridine, 3-chloropyridine, and 2-aminopyridine). All complexes were characterized by NMR (1H and 13C), FTIR spectroscopic and elemental analysis techniques. In addition, the single crystal structures of the complex 3, 4, and 6 were determined through single crystal x-ray crystallographic method. Furthermore, the carbonic anhydrase I and II isoenzymes (hCAs) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition effects of these palladium-based complexes bearing NHC ligand were investigated. They showed highly potent inhibition effect with Ki values are between 10.06 ± 1.49-68.56 ± 11.53 nM for hCA I isoenzyme, 7.74 ± 0.66 to 49.39 ± 6.50 nM for hCA II isoenzyme and 22.83 ± 3.21 to 64.09 ± 9.05 nM for AChE enzyme.

Abstract
We report the Sonogashira cross-coupling of aryl ammonium salts catalyzed by air- and moisture-stable [Pd(NHC)(3-CF3-An)Cl2] (An = aniline). This highly active Pd(II)-NHC complex features broad scope and excellent C-N activation selectivity in the challenging alkynylative cross-coupling of aryl ammonium salts. Full structural characterization and computational studies demonstrate the effect of pyridine to aniline replacement as highly effective stabilizing ancillary ligand in well-defined Pd(II)-NHCs. Considering the high reactivity and the recent commercialization of [Pd(NHC)(3-CF3-An)Cl2] (Millipore Sigma, no. 915165), this catalyst represents an attractive approach to the activation of C-N bonds of broad synthetic interest.

Abstract
The first synthesis of Pd-PEPPSI N-heterocyclic carbene complexes derived from the abundant and renewable natural product caffeine is reported. The catalysts bearing 3-chloro-pyridine, pyridine and N-methylimidazole ancillary ligands were readily prepared from the corresponding N9-Me caffeine imidazolium salt by direct deprotonation and coordination to PdX2 in the presence of N-heterocycles or by ligand displacement of PdX2(Het)2. The model Pd-PEPPSI-caffeine complex has been characterized by x-ray crystallography. The complexes were successfully employed in the Suzuki cross-coupling of aryl bromides, Suzuki cross-coupling of amides, Heck cross-coupling and Sonogashira cross-coupling. Computational studies were employed to determine frontier molecular orbitals and bond order analysis of caffeine derived Pd-PEPPSI complexes. This class of catalysts offers an entry to utilize benign and sustainable biomass-derived Xanthine NHC ligands in the popular Pd-PEPPSI systems in organic synthesis and catalysis.

Abstract
New nickel complexes with tridentate phenoxy-amidate-aNHC donor groups were synthesized from the reactions between nickel acetate and imidazolium ligand precursors in net pyridine. An unusual degradation pathway was observed, leading to imidazole derivatives occupying the fourth coordination sites in these square planar complexes. A new imidazole-coordinated nickel complex was found to be efficient in catalyzing Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling with aryl chlorides under 3 mol% of catalyst loading. The catalytic activities were superior to those of its reported normal NHC counterpart. Instead of the common procedure of using additional phosphine, the addition of IMes·HCl significantly enhances the product yields of the catalytic reaction.

Abstract
The development of homogeneous catalysts is strongly connected to the design of new, sophisticated ligands, which resolve limitations of a given reaction protocol by manipulating the electronic properties of the metal and its spatial environment. Phosphines are a privileged class of ligands that find applications in many catalytic transformations, ranging from hydrogenation reactions to hydroformylation and coupling chemistry. For many years, chemists have been trying to improve the efficiency, selectivity, and application of coupling reactions. The use of highly electron-rich and bulky phosphines was often associated with increased selectivity and efficiency and led to the development of a vast variety of electron-rich alkyl-substituted phosphines. However, this concept of increasing the ligand donor strength reaches its limits with the use of trialkyl-substituted phosphines with tri-tert-butylphosphine thus being one of the most active ligands for many years. In the course of our research efforts to use the special donor strength of ylides to stabilize electron-deficient, low-valent main group compounds, we realized that ylide-substituted phosphine (YPhos) ligands possess remarkably strong donor abilities. Moreover, the YPhos ligands are highly tunable by changing the nature of the groups on the phosphonium, phosphine, or central ylidic carbon atom. We thus obtained a ligand platform with donor capabilities ranging from PCy3 to even stronger donor abilities than N-heterocyclic carbenes, while being more sterically demanding than simple phosphines as well as many well-known biarylphosphine ligands. These properties led us to explore the applicability of the YPhos ligands in catalysis. In a series of recent reports, our group applied YPhos ligands in gold and palladium catalyzed reactions at catalytic loadings applicable for medium- to large-scale applications. The increased donor strength and unique architecture allowed for remarkable activities in a series of transformations at mild reactions conditions. For gold(I)-catalyzed reactions, we obtained turnover numbers (TONs) for the hydroamination of phenylacetylene with aniline of over 20 000. Also, more complex reactions were easily catalyzed with efficiencies greater than those of other known gold(I) catalysts. Similar efficacies were found in a series of palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions. In Buchwald-Hartwig aminations, unprecedented activities for the amination of aryl chlorides were reached at room temperature. The speed of formation of the catalytically active mono-YPhos palladium species allowed for some of the amination reactions to be completed in only a few minutes. Adjustment of the ligand design enabled the use of a large variety of different aryl and alkyl amines of different steric demands. Furthermore, the YPhos ligands in general showed high activities and selectivity in the coupling of a variety of carbon nucleophiles with aryl chlorides, bromides, and triflates. This enabled the development of efficient reaction protocols for the α-arylation of unhindered ketones and the coupling of Grignard and zinc reagents as well as the first efficient coupling of chloroarenes with alkyllithium compounds. This Account summarizes the recent development of YPhos ligands and their application in gold and palladium catalysis. We also hope to stimulate further use of this ligand platform in catalysis in the future.

Abstract
Three different types of bimetallic NHC-metal complexes were synthesized, whose NHC units are attached at the 4,5-positions of xanthene. The NHC units are in close proximity and are designed such that each carbene coordinates one ML unit, while the chelation of one metal by two NHC is not possible. Several xanthene-((NHC)ML)2 complexes with ML = RhCl(cod), IrCl(cod), RhCl(CO)2, IrCl(CO)2, AuCl, AgCl, CuCl and Pd(allyl)Cl were synthesized and investigated.

Abstract
We report the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of [(NHC)PdCl2(aniline)] complexes. These well-defined, air- and moisture-stable catalysts are highly active in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of amides by N-C(O) activation as well as in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of esters, aryl chlorides, and Buchwald-Hartwig amination. Most crucially, this study introduces broadly available anilines as stabilizing ligands for well-defined Pd(II)-NHC catalysts. The availability of various aniline scaffolds, including structural and electronic diversity, has a significant potential in fine-tuning of challenging cross-couplings by Pd-NHCs. The parent catalyst in this class, [Pd(IPr)(AN)Cl2], has been commercialized in collaboration with Millipore Sigma, offering broad access for reaction screening and optimization.

Abstract
N-heterocyclic carbene ligands (NHC) are widely utilized in catalysis and material science. They are characterized by their steric and electronic properties. Steric properties are usually quantified on the basis of their static structure, which can be determined by X-ray diffraction. The electronic properties are estimated in the liquid state; for example, via the 77 Se liquid state NMR of Se-NHC adducts. We demonstrate that 77 Se NMR crystallography can contribute to the characterization of the structural and electronic properties of NHC in solid and liquid states. Selected Se-NHC adducts are investigated via 77 Se solid state NMR and X-ray crystallography, supported by quantum chemical calculations. This investigation reveals a correlation between the molecular structure of adducts and NMR parameters, including not only isotropic chemical shifts but also the other chemical shift tensor components. Afterwards, the liquid state 77 Se NMR data is presented and interpreted in terms of the quantum chemistry modelling. The discrepancy between the structural and electronic properties, and in particular the π-accepting abilities of adducts in the solid and liquid states is discussed. Finally, the 13 C isotropic chemical shift from the liquid state NMR and the 13 C tensor components are also discussed, and compared with their 77 Se counterparts. 77 Se NMR crystallography can deliver valuable information about NHC ligands, and together with liquid state 77 Se NMR can provide an in-depth outlook on the properties of NHC ligands.

Abstract
We report herein the synthesis of four new Pd-PEPPSI complexes with backbone-modified N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands and their application as catalysts in the α-alkylation of ketones with primary alcohols using a borrowing hydrogen process and tandem Suzuki-Miyaura coupling/α-alkylation reactions. Among the synthesized Pd-PEPPSI complexes, complex 2c having 4-methoxyphenyl groups at the 4,5-positions and 4-methoxybenzyl substituents on the N-atoms of imidazole exhibited the highest catalytic activity in the α-alkylation of ketones with primary alcohols (18 examples) with yields reaching up to 95%. Additionally, complex 2c was demonstrated to be an effective catalyst for the tandem Suzuki-Miyaura-coupling/α-alkylation of ketones to give biaryl ketones with high yields. The heterogeneous nature of the present catalytic system was verified by mercury poisoning and hot filtration experiments. Moreover, the formation of NHC-stabilized Pd(0) nanoparticles during the α-alkylation reactions was identified by advanced analytical techniques.

Abstract
N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have become a privileged structural motif in modern homogenous and heterogeneous catalysis. The last two decades have brought a plethora of structurally and electronically diversified carbene ligands, enabling the development of cutting-edge transformations, especially in the area of carbon-carbon bond formation. Although most of these were accomplished with common imidazolylidene and imidazolinylidene ligands, the most challenging ones were only accessible with the acenaphthylene-derived N-heterocyclic carbene ligands bearing a π-extended system. Their superior σ-donor capabilities with simultaneous ease of modification of the rigid backbone enhance the catalytic activity and stability of their transition metal complexes, which makes BIAN-NHC (BIAN—bis(imino)acenaphthene) ligands an attractive tool for the development of challenging reactions. The present review summarizes synthetic efforts towards BIAN-NHC metal complexes bearing acenaphthylene subunits and their applications in modern catalysis, with special emphasis put on recently developed enantioselective processes.

Abstract
AbstractA series of tricoordinate copper(I) complexes of general formula [Cu(Et
F-NHC)(2,2′-dipyridylamine)][BF4], in which Et
F-NHC represents an imidazol-2-ylidene ligand bearing a 9-ethyl-9-fluorenyl N-substituent have been synthesised stepwise from appropriate N-arylimidazoles. All complexes are remarkably air-stable, both in solution and in the solid state. X-ray diffraction studies revealed that in three of the complexes the fluorenylidene plane and the dipyridylamine (dpa) unit undergo intramolecular π–π stacking. The resulting bending of the fluorenilydene plane towards the metal atom is likely to contribute to maintain the trigonal planar geometry of the [Cu–C,N,N] unit upon binding of exogenous substrates, thereby considerably increasing complex stability.

Abstract
F-BODIPYs substituted with BPin functionality have been coupled to aryl halides using a mild and efficient catalyst system involving Pd2(dba)3 and XPhos. The methodology enables the Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling of electron-rich, electron-poor, and sterically encumbered BPin-substituted F-BODIPYs to aryl halides bearing various functional groups, thus presenting an opportunity for the preparation of highly functionalised F-BODIPYs without need for the corresponding aryl moiety to be available in borylated form.
