Conjugated Microporous Polymers with Built-In Magnetic Nanoparticles for Excellent Enrichment of Trace Hydroxylated Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Human Urine

Determination of parabens in breast milk using stir bar sorptive extraction coupled with UHPLC-UV

We developed an analytical method based on ultra-high performance liquid chromatography with UV detection, using a stir bar coated with amino/hydroxyl bifunctional microporous organic network (B-MON), for the analysis of parabens in breast milk samples. B-MON demonstrated superior performance with maximal methylparaben adsorption of 112.15 mg/g. Kinetic fitting revealed that outer diffusion was the key limiting step, and the adsorption was chemisorption. The thermodynamic analysis demonstrated that increased methylparaben adsorption was found at higher temperatures in spontaneous processes. The developed approach showed excellent linearity (R2 ≥ 0.9964) and a low detection limit (0.01 μg/L). Recoveries ranged from 85.8 to 105.5 % and the relative standard deviation was lower than 9.2 %. Based on the daily exposure assessment, these pollutants do not pose unacceptable health hazards to babies. However, the high detection frequencies (41.9%-93.5 %) suggest that breast milk still should be monitored.

Simultaneous extraction of hydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and catecholamines with magnetic boronic acid hypercrosslinked polymers

Urinary hydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OH-PAHs) and catecholamines (CAs) are important biomarkers of PAHs exposure. In this study, a novel magnetic boronic acid hypercrosslinked composite (Fe3O4@HCP-BA) is synthesized using a facile one-pot strategy and applied as a sorbent for the simultaneous extraction of OH-PAHs and CAs in urine samples. The synthesized Fe3O4@HCP-BA composites are characterized by rich pore structure, highly specific surface area, good magnetic response, and excellent selectivity and adsorption efficiency (range: 65.26-496.71 and 1227.3-1581.8 µmol g-1 for CAs and OH-PAHs, respectively). The mechanisms governing the adsorption of the OH-PAHs and CAs to the Fe3O4@HCP-BA composites were systematically studied via adsorption kinetics, isotherm models, XPS characterization, and molecular simulation. The resultant Fe3O4@HCP-BA composite-based MSPE/HPLC-FLD method exhibited good linearity (R2 > 0.9916), low limits of detection (0.2-0.3 pg mL-1 and 0.2-0.3 ng mL-1 for OH-PAHs and CAs, respectively), and good precision (intra-day and inter-day RSDs < 11.1%). The analysis of CAs and OH-PAHs in the urine samples from 14 smokers and 14 non-smokers revealed a positive correlation between the concentrations of CAs and OH-PAHs. Our findings not only establish the proposed method as a green, environmentally friendly, and simple strategy for preparing magnetic adsorbents, but also confirm it as a promising alternative method for accurate determination of OH-PAHs and CAs in biological samples.

Combining Polymerization and Templating toward Hyper-Cross-Linked Poly(propargyl aldehyde)s and Poly(propargyl alcohol)s for Reversible H2O and CO2 Capture and Construction of Porous Chiral Networks

Two series of hyper-cross-linked microporous polyacetylene networks containing either -[CH=C(CH=O)]- or -[CH=C(CH₂OH)]- monomeric units are reported. Networks are prepared by chain-growth copolymerization of acetal-protected propargyl aldehyde and acetal-protected propargyl alcohol with a 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene cross-linker followed by hydrolytic deprotection/detemplating. Deprotection not only liberates reactive CH=O and CH₂OH groups in the networks but also modifies the texture of the networks towards higher microporosity and higher specific surface area. The final networks with CH=O and CH₂OH groups attached directly to the polyene main chains of the networks have a specific surface area from 400 to 800 m²/g and contain functional groups in a high amount, up to 9.6 mmol/g. The CH=O and CH₂OH groups in the networks serve as active centres for the reversible capture of CO₂ and water vapour. The water vapour capture capacities of the networks (up to 445 mg/g at 297 K) are among the highest values reported for porous polymers, making these materials promising for cyclic water harvesting from the air. Covalent modification of the networks with (R)-(+)-3-aminopyrrolidine and (S)-(+)-2-methylbutyric acid enables the preparation of porous chiral networks and shows networks with CH=O and CH₂OH groups as reactive supports suitable for the anchoring of various functional molecules.

Primary amide-functionalized cyclotricatechylene covalent organic frameworks membrane for efficient enrichment of melamine and its derivatives in migration solution of food contact materials

A highly chemically stable primary amide-functionalized cyclotricatechylene covalent organic framework was synthesized by an irreversible reaction and a post-synthetic modification. It possessed a rod-like morphology and exhibited strong solvent stability owing to the polyether bonds. The material showed good adsorption performance for melamine and its derivatives and adsorption mechanism was investigated by molecular simulations. The adsorbent was coated on the nylon-66 membrane to prepare the enrichment membrane. Under optimized conditions, an in-syringe membrane-based extraction method, combined with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was developed for the analysis of melamine and six melamine derivatives in the migration solution. A good linearity was obtained with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.9924 to 0.9995. The limits of detection were 1-200 ng/L and the limits of quantification were 3-500 ng/L. This method was successfully applied to the migration solution of sushi bamboo rolling mats with spiked recoveries of 73.2%-115% and relative standard deviations of 0.9%-9.9%. This work shows a practical and perspective approach for the efficient enrichment of food contact material hazards.

MOF-74/polystyrene-derived Ni-doped hierarchical porous carbon for structure-oriented extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their metabolites from human biofluids

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as a major source that significantly increase the risk of developing lung cancer, severely jeopardize public health in modern society. The analysis of PAHs and their metabolites (hydroxylated PAHs, OH-PAHs) is important for biomonitoring and exposure assessment. However, due to the difference in their physico-chemical properties and matrix interference, realizing high-performance extraction of both PAHs and OH-PAHs is still a challenge. Herein, a nickel-doped hierarchical porous carbon (Ni/HPC) is synthesized by carbonizing the polystyrene (PS) infiltrated metal-organic frameworks (MOF-74(Ni)). The obtained Ni/HPC exhibits hierarchical pores and evenly distributed Ni atoms, providing efficient diffusion pathways and adsorption sites. The custom Ni/HPC-coated solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber shows superior enrichment capabilities for PAHs and their metabolites under various interfering conditions, verifying its practicability in real sample analysis. The proposed method provides a new strategy to synthesize carbon-based adsorbents that achieves matrix-resistant enrichment of PAHs and OH-PAHs, which simplifies the related sample preparation process for environmental analysis and clinical diagnosis.

Application of a novel nylon needle filter-based solid-phase extraction device to determination of 1-hydroxypyrene in urine

In this work, a simple and miniaturized solid-phase extraction device was constructed by connecting a commercial nylon needle filter to a syringe, which was applied for extracting 1-hydroxypyrene from urine sample via hydrophobic and hydrogen bond interactions. The nylon membrane in the needle filter acted as the solid-phase extraction adsorbent, meanwhile, it filtered the particles in the urine sample. To obtain high extraction efficiency, key parameters influencing extraction recovery were investigated. The entire pretreatment process was accomplished within 5 min under the optimal conditions. By coupling HPLC-UV, a rapid, low-cost, and convenient nylon needle filter-based method was established for the analysis of 1-hydroxypyrene in complex urine matrix. Within the linearity range of 0.2-1000 μg/L, the method exhibited a satisfactory correlation coefficient (R = 0.9999). The limit of detection was 0.06 μg/L, and the recoveries from urine sample spiked with three concentrations (5, 20, and 100 μg/L) ranged from 105.8% to 113.1% with the relative standard deviations less than 6.7% (intra-day, n = 6) and 8.9% (inter-day, n = 4). Finally, the proposed method was successfully applied for detecting 1-hydroxypyrene in urine samples from college students, smokers, gas station workers, and chip factory workers. The detected concentration in actual urine samples ranged from 0.46 to 5.26 μg/L. Taken together, this simple and cost-effective nylon needle filter-based solid-phase extraction device showed an excellent application potential for pretreating hydrophobic analytes from aqueous samples. Development of a highly efficient in-tube solid-phase microextraction system coupled with UHPLC-MS/MS for analyzing trace hydroxyl polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in biological samples

Hydroxyl polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are considered active mutagenic and carcinogenic substances and are found in extremely low levels (ng/g) in biological samples. As a result, their determination in urine and blood samples is challenging, and a sensitive and effective method for the analysis of trace hydroxyl polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in complex biological matrices is required. In this work, a novel macroporous in-tube solid-phase microextraction monolith was prepared via a thiol-yne click reaction, and a highly efficient analytical method based on in-tube solid-phase microextraction coupled with UHPLC-MS/MS was developed to determine hydroxyl polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with low detection limits of 0.137-11.0 ng/L in complex biological samples. Four hydroxyl polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, namely, 2-hydroxyanthraquinone, 1-hydroxypyrene, 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone, and 6-hydroxychrysene, were determined in the urine samples of smokers, non-smokers, and whole blood samples of mice. Satisfactory recoveries were achieved in the range of 83.1-113% with relative standard deviations of 3.2-9.7%. It was found that implementation of the macroporous monolith gave a highly efficient approach for enriching trace hydroxyl polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in biological samples.

Core-shell magnetic porous organic polymer for magnetic solid-phase extraction of fluoroquinolone antibiotics in honey samples followed by high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection

By monomer-mediated in-situ growth synthesis strategy, with hydroquinone and 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene as monomers, a core-shell magnetic porous organic polymer was synthesized through a simple azo reaction. Based on this, a magnetic solid-phase extraction-high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection method was proposed for the analysis of fluoroquinolones in a honey sample. With ofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, lomefloxacin, and difloxacin as target analytes, factors affecting the extraction efficiency had been optimized. The LODs were 1.5-5.4 ng/L (corresponding to 0.23-0.81 μg/kg in honey). The linear range was 0.005-20 μg/L for difloxacin, 0.01-20 μg/L for ofloxacin, ciprofloxacin and lomefloxacin, and 0.02-20 μg/L for enrofloxacin. The enrichment factor was 84.4-91.7-fold with a high extraction efficiency of 84.4-91.7%. The method was assessed by the analysis of target fluoroquinolones in honey samples, and the recoveries for the spiked samples were 79.3-95.8%. The results indicated that the established magnetic solid-phase extraction-high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection method is efficient for the analysis of trace fluoroquinolones in honey.

Simultaneous determination of multiple isomeric hydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urine by using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry

Monitoring the level of hydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OH-PAHs) in urine is the key to exploring human metabolic changes and comprehensive potential toxicity of PAHs. The OH-PAHs with isomeric structure have different biological functions, indicating that their quantification is indispensable. However, the quantitation method is still dissatisfactory due to the poor separation of these isomeric OH-PAHs. The current study established a ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) tandem mass spectrometry (MS) method to complete the simultaneous determination of 17 OH-PAHs, including two naphthalene metabolites (1-hydroxynaphthalene, 2-hydroxynaphthalene), two fluorene metabolites (2-hydroxyfluorene, 3-hydroxyfluorene), five phenanthrene metabolites (1-hydroxyphenanthrene, 2-hydroxyphenanthrene, 3-hydroxyphenanthrene, 4-hydroxyphenanthrene, 9-hydroxyphenanthrene), a pyrene metabolite (1-hydroxypyrene), five chrysene metabolites (1-hydroxychrysene, 2-hydroxychrysene, 3-hydroxychrysene, 4-hydroxychrysene, 6-hydroxychrysene) and two benzo[a]pyrene metabolites (3-hydroxybenzo[a]pyrene, 9-hydroxybenzo[a]pyrene). The method validation results showed good selectivity, linearity (r² > 0.999), inter-day and intra-day precision (relative standard deviation (RSD) < 5.5% and RSD < 6.3%), stability (RSD < 19.3%), matrix effect (-8.3%-11.5%) and recovery (65.9%-116.2%). This method is convenient, sensitive and efficient, saving expensive materials and complicated derivatization procedures. The practical applicability of developed approach was also tested in urine samples to identify potential biomarkers of PAHs exposure in humans, and a great compromise was obtained between recoveries and extract convenience. The developed approach may be widely utilized for specific determination of OH-PAHs with isomer structure in urine samples. It is expected that the application of this method may provide powerful references for PAHs exposure assessment.

Tailored amino/hydroxyl bifunctional microporous organic network for efficient stir bar sorptive extraction of parabens and flavors from cosmetic and food samples

As an effective sample pretreatment approach, stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) has shown great prospects in static microextraction and selective enrichment. In this work, bifunctional microporous organic network (B-MON) with the coexistence of amino and hydroxyl groups was firstly designed and synthesized as a novel coating for efficient SBSE of parabens and flavors in combination with high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with photodiode array detection (HPLC-PDA). Linked by covalent bonds to form an extension of the aromatic ring skeleton, B-MON was a tailored adsorbent featured by porous structure and abundant hydrogen bonding sites for analytes with benzene/naphthalene rings and OH/COOH groups. The extraction and desorption parameters were evaluated in detail. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed B-MON-SBSE-HPLC-PDA method offered good linearity (0.10-100 μg L^-1) with correlation coefficients R² ≥ 0.995, low limits of detection (0.010-0.035 μg L^-1) and limits of quantification (0.035-0.115 μg L^-1), and favorable enrichment factors (40-49). Furthermore, the developed method has been applied to the analysis of parabens and flavors in cosmetic and food samples with recoveries ranging from 80.4 to 109.6%. This method was also feasible to extract the analytes with benzene/naphthalene rings and OH/COOH groups, such as the plant growth regulators and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The present study provided a new way to synthesize bifunctional MONs for SBSE of trace analytes in complex samples.

Multi-functional porous organic polymers for highly-efficient solid-phase extraction of β-agonists and β-blockers in milk

A simple, accurate, and highly sensitive analytical method was developed in this study for the determination of ten β-agonists and five β-blockers in milk. In this method, new adsorbent phosphonic acid-functionalized porous organic polymers were synthesized through a direct knitting method. The synthesis procedure of the materials and the extraction conditions (such as the composition of loading buffer and eluent) were optimized. Benefitting from the high surface area (545–804 m² g⁻¹), multiple functional framework and good porosity, the phosphonic acid-functionalized porous organic polymers showed a high adsorption rate and high adsorption capacity for β-agonists (224 mg g⁻¹ and 171 mg g⁻¹ for clenbuterol and ractopamine, respectively). The analytes were quantified by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry. It showed a good linearity (with R² ranging from 0.9950 to 0.9991 in the linear range of 3–5 orders of magnitude), with low limits of quantification ranging from 0.05 to 0.25 ng g⁻¹. The limits of detection of the method for the analytes were measured to be in the range of 0.02 to 0.1 ng g⁻¹. The recoveries of target analytes from real samples on the material were in the range of 62.4–119.4% with relative standard deviations of 0.6–12.1% (n = 4). Moreover, good reproducibility of the method was obtained with the interday RSD being lower than 11.7% (n = 5) and intraday RSD lower than 12.2% (n = 4). The proposed method was accurate, reliable and convenient for the simultaneous analysis of multiple β-agonists and β-blockers. Finally, the method was successfully applied for the analysis of such compounds in milk samples.

Novel phosphonic acid-functionalized porous organic polymers were synthesized through direct knitting method. It shows high adsorption efficiency and high adsorption capacity for multiple β-agonists and β-blockers analysis.

Fabrication of magnetic polydopamine@naphthyl microporous organic network nanosphere for efficient extraction of hydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and p-nitrophenol from wastewater samples

Herein, we report the fabrication of a novel, well-defined core-double-shell-structured magnetic Fe₃O₄@polydopamine@naphthyl microporous organic network (MON), Fe₃O₄@PDA@NMON, for the efficient magnetic extraction of hydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OH-PAHs) and p-nitrophenol (p-Npn) from wastewater samples. The hierarchical nanospheres were designed and constructed with the Fe₃O₄ nanoparticle core, the inner shell of a polydopamine (PDA) layer, and the outer shell of a porous naphthyl MON (NMON) coating, allowing efficient and synergistic extraction of OH-PAHs and p-Npn via hydrophobic, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interactions. The Fe₃O₄@PDA@NMON nanospheres were well characterized and employed as an efficient sorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) coupled with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for analyzing of OH-PAHs and p-Npn. Under optimal conditions, the Fe₃O₄@PDA@NMON-based-MSPE-HPLC-UV method afforded wide linear range (0.18-500 μg L^-1), low limits of detection (0.070 μg L^-1 for p-Npn, 0.090 μg L^-1 for 2-OH-Nap, 0.090 μg L^-1 for 9-OH-Fluo and 0.055 μg L^-1 for 9-OH-Phe, respectively), large enrichment factors (92.6-98.4), good precisions (intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviations (RSDs); <6.4%, n=6) and less consumption of the adsorbent. Furthermore, trace OH-PAHs and p-Npn with concentrations of 0.29-0.80 μg L^-1 were successfully detected in various wastewater samples. Fe₃O₄@PDA@NMON also functioned as a good adsorbent to enrich a wide scope of trace contaminants containing hydrogen bonding sites and aromatic structures, highlighting the potential of functional MONs in sample pretreatment.

Fabrication of polyethyleneimine modified magnetic microporous organic network nanosphere for efficient enrichment of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs from wastewater samples prior to HPLC-UV analysis

Development of novel functionalized adsorbents for efficient magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) is essential for promoting their versatile applications in sample pretreatment. Herein, we report the fabrication of a new polyethyleneimine-600 decorated magnetic microporous organic network nanosphere (Fe₃O₄@MON-PEI₆₀₀) for effective MSPE of trace non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) from different water samples. The core-shelled Fe₃O₄@MON-PEI₆₀₀ integrates the synergistic effects of Fe₃O₄, MON and PEI₆₀₀, providing facile and effective extraction to NSAIDs via multiple hydrogen bonding, π-π and hydrophobic interactions. The inner MON shell employs π-π and hydrophobic interaction sites and the outer PEI-600 coat acts as the hydrogen bonding doner/receptor, which affords good extraction performance for NSAIDs. Under optimal conditions, the Fe₃O₄@MON-PEI₆₀₀-MSPE-HPLC-UV method gives wide linear range (0.14-400 μg L^-1), low limits of detection (0.042-0.149 μg L^-1), good precisions (intra-day and inter-day RSDs < 4.5%, n = 6), and large enrichment factors (97.0-98.2). Extraction mechanisms and selectivity of Fe₃O₄@MON-PEI₆₀₀ are evaluated in detail. Moreover, Fe₃O₄@MON-PEI₆₀₀ is successfully applied to enrich the trace NSAIDs in different water samples with the concentrations of 0.7 and 0.8 μg L^-1 for 1-naphthylacetic acid, 0.5 and 0.1 μg L^-1 for naproxen as well as 0.7 μg L^-1 for ibuprofen, respectively. The developed method not only affords a novel and efficient magnetic adsorbent for NSAIDs in aqueous media at trace level, but also provides a new strategy for the rational design and synthesis of multiple functionalized MON composites in sample pretreatment.

Carnosine functionalized magnetic metal-organic framework nanocomposites for synergistic enrichment of phosphopeptides

Protein phosphorylation regulates the conformations and function of proteins, which plays an important part in organisms. However, systematic and in-depth analysis of phosphorylation often hinders on account of the low abundance and suppressed ionization of phosphopeptides. Various materials based on single enrichment mechanism show potential in phosphopeptides enrichment, but the enrichment performance is typically not satisfactory. Herein, we developed a carnosine (Car) functionalized magnetic metal organic framework designed as Fe₃O₄@NH₂@ZIF-90@Car. Benefiting from the multiple recognition groups of Car and massive metal ions site of ZIF-90, the as-fabricated Fe₃O₄@NH₂@ZIF-90@Car was utilized as a multifunctional material with synergistic effect for phosphopeptides enrichment. On the basis of combined immobilized metal ion affinity chromatography (IMAC) and amine-based affinity enrichment mechanism, Fe₃O₄@NH₂@ZIF-90@Car exhibited higher enrichment performance of phosphopeptides compared with Fe₃O₄@NH₂@ZIF-90 (single IMAC mechanism). Besides, the feasibility of Fe₃O₄@NH₂@ZIF-90@Car nanocomposites in complicated samples was further verified by enriching phosphopeptides from nonfat milk, human fluids such as serum and saliva, demonstrating its bright application prospects in phosphoproteomics analysis.

Facile fabrication of composited solid phase microextraction thin membranes for sensitive detections of trace hydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in human urine

Solid phase microextraction (SPME) has potential to be used for the high-performance enrichments of hydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OH-PAHs), which are important biomarkers of PAH exposure. By choosing suitable adsorbent, it is conducive to fabricate new-type of SPME device for improved extraction efficiencies towards OH-PAHs. In this study, a novel method of surface solvent evaporation has been proposed to fabricate SPME thin membrane, integrating the advantages of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and different porous adsorbents. The powdery metal organic framework (Uio66-NH₂), porous polymer (powdery polymer aerogel, PPA) and ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC) have been chosen as typical adsorbents and fabricated as thin membranes successfully, indicating the universality of the proposed method for membrane fabrication. Comparing the extraction efficiencies of three prepared membranes towards OH-PAHs, the OMC-PDMS membrane has demonstrated best enrichment efficiencies. The OMC-PDMS membrane was used for the enrichments of trace OH-PAHs in human urine of both smokers and nonsmokers, combining with liquid chromatographic tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The detection limits were in the range of 0.15-0.39 ng L^-1, and satisfactory recoveries were found to be 82.1%-115%. It can be seen that the universal strategy to fabricate SPME membrane is helpful to achieve broad-spectrum or selective enrichments of target analytes from complex matrix by simple modulation of membrane components.

Superhydrophobic conjugated microporous polymers grafted silica microspheres for liquid chromatographic separation

Vigorously developing new high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) stationary phases to meet the versatile separation requirements is still an important issue in the field of analytical chemistry. Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) are a new type of three-dimensional network porous material with high specific surface area, good chemical stability and superhydrophobicity. Herein, we firstly report the synthesis and applications of CMPs@SiO₂ material for HPLC stationary phase. The CMPs@SiO₂ material can be in situ fabricated via Sonogashira coupling of 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene and 1,4-diiodobenzene on the surface of spherical silica. The morphology and physicochemical properties of the synthesized stationary phase material were investigated by a series of characterization methods. Due to the superhydrophobic nature of the CMPs@SiO₂ material, the packed CMPs@SiO₂ HPLC column displays ultrastrong chromatographic retention and can be used for separation of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic compounds with good selectivity. Significantly, CMPs@SiO₂ column can be performed for separation with pure acetonitrile as the eluent. Thus, the new column was successfully exploited for monitor and analysis of the hydrolysis of silane coupling agents. Furthermore, based on its oleophilicity, this report firstly utilized the CMPs@SiO₂ material to identify and analyze the quality of cooking oils through one-step enrichment and subsequent HPLC separation. We will further exploit to fabricate versatile CMPs-based stationary phases, highlighting their potential applications in different separation scopes.

Fast magnetic solid-phase extraction using an Fe3O4-NH2@MOF material for monohydroxy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urine of coke-oven workers

In this work, a magnetic material (Fe3O4-NH2@MIL-101) was successfully prepared, and the material was used as a sorbent for the magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of trace level monohydroxy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OH-PAHs) from urine samples for the first time. The target analytes were quantified by high performance liquid chromatography coupled with fluorescence detection (HPLC-FLD). The MSPE key factors, which include the amount of adsorbent, extraction time, pH, the effect of salt, eluting solutions and eluant volume, were systematically optimized. Under the optimized conditions, the developed method showed good linearity (0.03-200 ng mL-1), low limits of detection (0.016-0.042 ng mL-1, signal-to-noise ratio = 3) and satisfactory repeatability (relative standard deviation ≤ 10.1%, n = 5). The method showed stable average recoveries ranging from 78.3% to 112.9% and the enrichment factors were 9 to 15. Besides the satisfactory method parameters, the total MPSE process could be completed in no more than 5 minutes. These results indicated that Fe3O4-NH2@MOF based MSPE was a simple, efficient and fast method which was suitable for MSPE of OH-PAHs from urine samples.

Magnetic Solid-Phase Extraction of Organic Compounds Based on Graphene Oxide Nanocomposites

Graphene oxide (GO) is a chemical compound with a form similar to graphene that consists of one-atom-thick two-dimensional layers of sp²-bonded carbon. Graphene oxide exhibits high hydrophilicity and dispersibility. Thus, it is difficult to be separated from aqueous solutions. Therefore, functionalization with magnetic nanoparticles is performed in order to prepare a magnetic GO nanocomposite that combines the sufficient adsorption capacity of graphene oxide and the convenience of magnetic separation. Moreover, the magnetic material can be further functionalized with different groups to prevent aggregation and extends its potential application. Until today, a plethora of magnetic GO hybrid materials have been synthesized and successfully employed for the magnetic solid-phase extraction of organic compounds from environmental, agricultural, biological, and food samples. The developed GO nanocomposites exhibit satisfactory stability in aqueous solutions, as well as sufficient surface area. Thus, they are considered as an alternative to conventional sorbents by enriching the analytical toolbox for the analysis of trace organic compounds.

NH2-MIL-53(Al) Polymer Monolithic Column for In-Tube Solid-Phase Microextraction Combined with UHPLC-MS/MS for Detection of Trace Sulfonamides in Food Samples

In this study, a novel monolithic capillary column based on a NH2-MIL-53(Al) metal-organic framework (MOF) incorporated in poly (3-acrylamidophenylboronic acid/methacrylic acid-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (poly (AAPBA/MAA-co-EGDMA)) was prepared using an in situ polymerization method. The characteristics of the MOF-polymer monolithic column were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis. The prepared MOF-polymer monolithic column showed good permeability, high extraction efficiency, chemical stability, and good reproducibility. The MOF-polymer monolithic column was used for in-tube solid-phase microextraction (SPME) to efficiently adsorb trace sulfonamides from food samples. A novel method combining MOF-polymer-monolithic-column-based SPME with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) was successfully developed. The linear range was from 0.015 to 25.0 µg/L, with low limits of detection of 1.3-4.7 ng/L and relative standard deviations (RSDs) of < 6.1%. Eight trace sulfonamides in fish and chicken samples were determined, with recoveries of the eight analytes ranging from 85.7% to 113% and acceptable RSDs of < 7.3%. These results demonstrate that the novel MOF-polymer-monolithic-column-based SPME coupled with UHPLC-MS/MS is a highly sensitive, practical, and convenient method for monitoring trace sulfonamides in food samples previously extracted with an adequate solvent.

A selective and sensitive fluorescent probe for bilirubin in human serum based on europium(III) post-functionalized Zr(IV)-Based MOFs

In the present study, a kind of Eu(III) post-functionalized Zr(IV)-based metal-organic framework (UiO-66(COOH)₂, Zr-MOF: Eu³⁺) was synthesized and utilized as an independently luminescent probe for sensing bilirubin (BR) in human serum, a biomarker of jaundice hepatitis. It can be served as a turn-off fluorescent switch for BR because its red emission from Eu³⁺ can be easily quenched by BR through a fluorescent resonant energy transfer (FRET) process between BR and its ligands, and as a result, BR is recognized successfully. Particularly, Zr-MOF: Eu³⁺ has shown many appealing properties, such as high sensitivity, quick response (less than 1 min), broad response window (0-15 μM), and excellent selectivity. Most importantly, a kind of portable test paper based on Zr-MOF: Eu³⁺ probe has been developed for directly assessing the level of BR in real human serum and further diagnosing bilirubin-related diseases via visually observing the luminescent color variation.

Determination of trace hydroxyl polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urine using graphene oxide incorporated monolith solid-phase extraction coupled with LC-MS/MS

The biomonitoring of hydroxy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urine, as a direct way to access multiple exposures to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, has raised great concerns due to their increasing hazardous health effects on humans. Solid-phase extraction is an effective and useful technique to preconcentrate trace analytes from biological samples. Here, we report a novel solid-phase extraction method using a graphene oxide incorporated monolithic syringe for the determination of six hydroxy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urine coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The effect of graphene oxide amount, washing solvent, eluting solvent, and its volume on the extraction performance were investigated. The fabricated monoliths gave higher adsorption efficiency and capacity than the neat polymer monolith and commercial C₁₈ sorbent. Under the optimum conditions, the developed method provided the detection limits (S/N = 3) of 0.02-0.1 ng/mL and the linear ranges of 0.1-1500 ng/mL for six analytes in urine sample. The recoveries at three spiked levels ranged from 77.5 to 97.1%. Besides, the intra column-to-column (n = 3) and inter batch-to-batch (n = 3) precisions were ≤ 9.8%. The developed method was successfully applied for the determination of hydroxy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urine samples of coke oven workers.

Magnetic metal-organic frameworks-101 functionalized with graphite-like carbon nitride for the efficient enrichment of glucocorticoids in cosmetics

In this work, magnetic metal-organic frameworks-101 functionalized with graphite-like carbon nitride material (Fe₃O₄/g-C₃N₄/MIL-101) has been simply prepared for the efficient enrichment of glucocorticoids in cosmetics. Due to the introduction of g-C₃N₄, the water stability of MIL-101 has been greatly improved. This composite material also showed better selectivity for glucocorticoids than those for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and benzene compounds due to the hydrogen bonding effect with g-C₃N₄ and the size-matching effect with MIL-101. When the prepared material was used as the sorbents in magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) and coupled with ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS), a sensitive MSPE-UPLC-MS/MS method was developed. Under the optimal conditions, the calibration curves were linear over the concentration ranging from 0.01 to 2 μg/L with correlation coefficients (R²) between 0.9915 and 0.9995. The limit of detection (LOD) was as low as 2 ng/L with the RSDs lower than 5.5%. The recoveries ranged from 77.3% to 113%. The LOD of glucocorticoids in real samples analysis was improved by nearly three orders of magnitude compared to current literature records. The results indicated that Fe₃O₄/g-C₃N₄/MIL-101 could be used as MSPE extractant to determine glucocorticoids in complex cosmetics matrix.

Microwave-assisted synthesis of porphyrin conjugated microporous polymers for microextraction of volatile organic acids in tobaccos

Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) with permanent microporosity and extended p-conjugated skeletons have recently shown the fascinating application in separation and enrichment. In this report, porphyrin CMP that possessed microporous structure and nitrogen-rich pyrrole building blocks was successfully synthesized by microwave-assisted method. Then, a novel coating based on porphyrin CMP was fabricated on silica fiber for efficient enrichment volatile organic acids (VOAs). The simulation showed the coating exhibited strong interaction with volatile organic acids based on charge transfer interaction, hydrogen bond and size effect. Hence, we proposed a method for determination of volatile organic acids in tobaccos by headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) with porphyrin CMP coating by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results showed that the coating provided high enrichment factors for VOAs ranging from 66,657 to 133,970 and low limits of detection from 4.6 to 22 ng/L. A good linearity was observed for propionic acid and crotonic acid ranging from 0.050 to 8.0 μg/L, 2-methylheptanoic acid ranging from 0.063 to 1.5 μg/L, others ranging from 0.025 to 3.0 μg/L with the determination coefficient (R2) between 0.9900 and 0.9980. The strategy for determination of volatile compounds in complex solid samples was successfully applied to the analysis of volatile organic acids in tobacco leaves. The results showed that the method was accurate and reliable.

Microporous polymer based on the new compound "bi-(4-vinyl phenylquinoline) amide" for enrichment and quantitative determination of lamotrigine in rat and human serum

Lamotrigine is one of the most widely used antiepileptic drugs in the treatment of epilepsy. This kind of drug needs to be used in the long term and should be quantitatively detected in the blood of patients to avoid drug toxicity caused by individual differences and environmental and pathological changes in the process of taking. The detection of antiepileptic drugs in human blood is challenging because of their low contents and the interference of complex matrices. Thus, the sample enrichment method has been commonly used to improve the sensitivity of detection. In this work, we have synthesized a new "bi-(4-vinyl phenylquinoline) amide" compound and used it as the monomer to produce the hyper-cross-linked microporous polymer for the enrichment of lamotrigine. This material has a high adsorption capacity, specificity, and linearity, which can improve the detection sensitivity of lamotrigine by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The mechanism of this phenomenon has also been investigated. Finally, we have developed the microporous polymer enrichment coupled with HPLC method for the quantitative determination of lamotrigine in rat and human serum samples. This method has excellent precision, accuracy, and recovery, meeting the test of biological sample. The low limit of quantitation was 0.625 μg/mL. Graphical abstract.

Facile Preparation of Dual-Shell Novel Covalent-Organic Framework Functionalized Magnetic Nanospheres Used for the Simultaneous Determination of Fourteen Trace Heterocyclic Aromatic Amines in Nonsmokers and Smokers of Cigarettes with Different Tar Yields Based on UPLC-MS/MS

The facile preparation, characterization, and application of novel dual-shell TpBD (a kind of covalent-organic framework) coated magnetic nanospheres as sorbents for simple, fast, and high selectivity capture of 14 heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) are reported. Quantum chemistry theory calculations were conducted to directly and quantifiably describe the multiple interactions, including π-π, hydrogen bonding, cation-π, static electricity, and ion-exchange, between TpBD and heterocyclic aromatic amines. The excellent adsorption capacity of TpBD coated magnetic nanospheres was further evaluated by extraction of 14 HAAs from nonsmokers' and smokers' urine samples. Under the optimized conditions, the magnetic solid phase extraction process can be completed with high recovery ranging from 95.4% to 129.3%. After being washed with acetonitrile and water successively, the collected sorbents can be easily recycled and reused five times without any significant difference in performance. Coupled with the ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometer detection, the exposure level of HAAs in nonsmokers and smokers smoking cigarettes with different tar yields were successfully explored. And, this implied that the robust method based on the versatile TpBD coated dual-shell magnetic nanospheres sorbents represents a great potential application in the analysis of disease markers and body fluids.

In situ Stabilization of Au and Co Nanoparticles in a Redox-Active Conjugated Microporous Polymer Matrix: Facile Heterogeneous Catalysis and Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction Reaction Activity

We report a novel in situ method for synthesis of metal nanoparticles (NPs)-CMP (conjugated microporous polymer) composites based on a redox-active, donor-acceptor CMP, tris-(4-aminophenyl)amine (TPA)-perylenediimide (PDI). The TPA-PDI CMP, comprising triphenylamine as an electron donor and PDI as an acceptor, showed stable charge-separated state and semiconducting behavior. Further, TPA-PDI CMP has been exploited for in situ stabilization of metal (Au and Co) NPs, and two novel nanocomposites (Au@TPA-PDI and Co@TPA-PDI) were prepared. The catalytic reduction of nitro aryls to amino aryls was studied using Au@TPA-PDI, which showed excellent yields and fast kinetics. The CMP itself was found to show good activity as a metal-free oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalyst with an onset potential of 0.82 V. Stabilizing merely 2.56 wt % Co nanoparticles in the CMP matrix improved the electrochemical ORR activity of as-synthesized TPA-PDI immensely and showed an onset potential of 0.91 V, which has also been supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

A hybrid triazine-imine core-shell magnetic covalent organic polymer for analysis of pesticides in fruit samples by ultra high performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry

A novel hybrid triazine-imine core-shell magnetic covalent organic polymer with high adsorption capacity and excellent stability was fabricated by surface-assisted in situ growth technique. The composite possesses porous and extended π-conjugated system, and was applied as the magnetic sorbent for efficient enrichment and rapid separation of pesticides. A new analytical method for simultaneous determination of eight pesticides in fruit samples was developed by magnetic solid phase extraction combined with ultra high performance liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry. The effect of extraction time, desorption time, and the type of desorption solvent on the extraction efficiency were evaluated. The established method shows good repeatability and high sensitivity. The repeatability of this method was estimated with relative standard deviations in the range of 0.7-7.0% (n = 5) for the same batch, and 1.7-10% (n = 3) for batch to batch. Good linearity for eight pesticides was obtained with coefficient of determination in the range of 0.9942-0.9990. Limit of detections ranged from 0.4 to 1.2 ng/L. Real sample determination showed that four and two pesticides were detected in strawberry and grape, respectively. The results demonstrated that the established method was efficient, sensitive, and convenient for trace determination of pesticides in fruit samples.

Facile preparation of a cationic COF functionalized magnetic nanoparticle and its use for the determination of nine hydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in smokers’ urine

A novel cationic-COF coated double-shell magnetic sorbent, possessing excellent dispersive capability, high stability, and desirable absorption affinity, was prepared.
