Membrane modification in enhancement of virus removal: A critical review

Many waterborne diseases are related with viruses, and COVID-19 worldwide has raised the concern of virus security in water into the public horizon. Compared to other conventional water treatment processes, membrane technology can achieve satisfactory virus removal with fewer chemicals, and prevent the outbreaks of viruses to a maximal extent. Researchers developed new modification methods to improve membrane performance. This review focused on the membrane modifications that enhance the performance in virus removal. The characteristics of viruses and their removal by membrane filtration were briefly generalized, and membrane modifications were systematically discussed through different virus removal mechanisms, including size exclusion, hydrophilic and hydrophobic interactions, electronic interactions, and inactivation. Advanced functional materials for membrane modification were summarized based on their nature. Furthermore, it is suggested that membranes should be enhanced through different mechanisms mainly based on their ranks of pore size. The current review provided theoretical support regarding membrane modifications in the enhancement of virus removal and avenues for practical application.

Development of Hollow Fiber Membranes Functionalized with Ionic Liquids for Enhanced CO2 Separation

The combination of CO2-selective ionic liquids (ILs) with block copolymers, such as Pebax 1657, has demonstrated an enhancement of the gas separation capabilities of polymeric membranes. In the current work, the development of composite membranes by applying a thin, concentrated selective layer made of Pebax/imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) is presented. The objective of the experiments was to determine the optimized IL loading and investigate how the alteration of the anion impacts the properties of the membranes. Two membrane configurations have been studied: coated flat sheet membranes, supported on a porous poly(ether sulfone) (PES) layer, as well as composite hollow fiber membranes, supported on commercial polypropylene (PP) hollow fibers. Coated hollow fiber composites were fabricated using a continuous coating method, offering a straightforward scalability in the manufacturing process. The determined mechanical pressure stability of hollow fiber composites reached up to 5 bar, indicating their potential for various industrial gas separation applications. It was found that the Pebax 1657-based coating containing 40 wt % [C6mim][NTf2] yielded membranes with the best gas separation properties, for both the coated flat sheet and the hollow fiber configurations. The CO2 permeance of hollow fibers reached 23.29 GPU, whereas the CO2/N2 ideal selectivity stood at 8.7, suggesting the necessity of the further enhancement of the coating technique, which can be achieved, for example, through application of multiple coatings. Nonetheless, the superior ideal selectivity of the CO2/CO separation, reaching 12.44, gave a promising outlook for further novel membrane applications, which involve the separation of the aforementioned gases.

Room-temperature synthesis of a Zr-UiO-66 metal-organic framework via mechanochemical pretreatment for the rapid removal of EDTA-chelated copper from water

Treatment of heavy metal pollution in complexed states within water bodies presents significant challenges in the current water treatment field. Adsorption as a means for the removal of heavy metals is characterized by its simplicity of operation, stable effluent, and minimal equipment requirements. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as adsorbents hold significant interest for applications in water treatment. In this study, we investigated a green synthesis approach for the ball-milling pretreated synthesis of UiO-66(Zr) at room temperature, abbreviated as UiO-66(Zr)-rm. Besides having the same thermal stability and crystal structure as the product from microwave-assisted synthesis (UiO-66(Zr)-mw), the resulting UiO-66(Zr)-rm features smaller particle size and superior mesoporous structure. The adsorption efficiency and mechanism for removing EDTA-chelated copper (EDTA-CuII), a complexed heavy metal in water, were extensively analyzed. UiO-66(Zr)-rm presented a maximum adsorption capacity over EDTA-CuII of 43 mg g-1 and a much higher adsorption rate (0.16 g (mg h)-1) than UiO-66(Zr)-mw (0.06 g (mg h)-1). Hierarchically mesostructured defects allow the sorbate to have more effective diffusion in a shorter time to achieve faster adsorption kinetics. Benefiting from the mild synthesis conditions and nontoxic solvents, UiO-66(Zr) has the potential to be produced at a scaled-up level, thereby exhibiting excellent adsorption performance for the removal of complexed heavy metals in the future.

Enhancing Permeability: Unraveling the Potential of Microporous Organic Polymers in Mixed Matrix Membranes

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were formed by using seven polymeric matrices with a wide range of permeabilities. All of the polymeric matrices have been polyimides, namely: P84, Pi-DAPOH, Pi-DAROH, Matrimid, Pi-HABAc, PI-DAM, and PIM-1 in the order of increasing O2 permeability. A fixed (10%) concentration of a microporous organic polymer (TFAP-Trp), formed by the combination of trifluoroacetophenone and triptycene, was added as a porous filler. The material properties as well as their separation performances for multiple pure gases, specifically the permeabilities of He, N2, O2, CH4, and CO2, were measured. The correlation between the relative increase in permeability in MMMs and that of the matrix polymeric membrane has been quantitatively analyzed. This study proves that the increased permeability of MMMs is largely linked to the contribution of the high permeability of the filler. The addition of the TFAP-Trp porous filler proves to be especially beneficial for matrices with low to moderate permeabilities, significantly enhancing the matrix permeability overall. The fitted relationship is approximately linear in accordance with the existing models to predict permeability in dual-phase systems for low proportions of the dispersed phase. An extrapolation allows the evaluation of the permeability of the pure microporous organic polymer, which agrees with the previous values described by the group for different filler contents and in other polymeric matrices. In all cases, the selectivity remains approximately constant while the permeability increases. The addition of TFAP-Trp to all the polymeric matrices led to a moderate improvement of the MMM separation performances, mainly centered on their permeabilities.

Wrinkled metal-organic framework thin films with tunable Turing patterns for pliable integration

Flexible integration spurs diverse applications in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). However, current configurations suffer from the trade-off between MOF loadings and mechanical compliance. We report a wrinkled configuration of MOF thin films. We established an interfacial synthesis confined and controlled by a polymer topcoat and achieved multiple Turing motifs in the wrinkled thin films. These films have complete MOF surface coverage and exhibit strain tolerance up to 53.2%. The enhanced mechanical properties allow film transfer onto various substrates. We obtained membranes with large H2/CO2 selectivity (41.2) and high H2 permeance (8.46 × 103 gas permeation units), showcasing negligible defects after transfer. We also achieved soft humidity sensors on delicate electrodes by avoiding exposure to harsh MOF synthesis conditions. These results highlight the potential of wrinkled MOF thin films for plug-and-play integration.

Carboxylate-Based Metal-Organic Framework and Coordination Polymer Glasses: Progress and Perspectives

ConspectusCoordination polymers (CPs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent versatile materials with diverse structural and functional properties, making them appealing for various applications. However, their conventional forms, which are typically synthesized as powders or crystals, pose challenges due to limited processability and mechanical fragility. Recently, CP/MOF glasses have emerged as promising alternatives, offering enhanced processability while retaining some of the unique characteristics shown in the mother crystalline materials. Despite the prevalence of carboxylate ligands in CP/MOF synthesis, the development of carboxylate-based CP/MOF glasses has been limited compared to that of zeolitic-imidazole framework (ZIF)-based glasses. This is attributed to the strong metal-ligand bonds and low thermal stability of carboxylic acids, which hinder their melting in CP/MOF structures. Nonetheless, recent advancements have led to a surge in methods for synthesizing carboxylate-based CP/MOF glasses. So far, desolvation and melt-quenching have been introduced for achieving glass structures from CP/MOF precursors.The first melt-quenched MOF glass was reported in 2015 with ZIFs. However, we informally observed the melting of the MOF during thermal decomposition research of aliphatic carboxylate-based MOFs as a sacrificial template dating back to 2013. In that study, aliphatic ligands, instead of aromatic carboxylate, were employed due to their high lability, lower thermal stability, and high degree of freedom, which facilitated pyrolysis. The results were published with a focus on synthesizing hierarchically porous MgO via the pyrolysis of an aliphatic ligand-based Mg-MOF in an inert environment. A decade later, it was revisited and studied as the first melt-quenched carboxylate-based MOF glass, converted from a crystalline MOF through the liquid phase before decomposition during the heating process.This Account aims to introduce six studies, including the aforementioned example, on the synthesis of CP/MOF glasses from carboxylate-based CPs/MOFs that have been published so far. To overcome the challenges with aromatic carboxylates in CP/MOF glass formation, the metal coordination sphere should be altered and the degree of freedom in the ligands should be increased. Based on these approaches, the strategies for vitrification of carboxylate-based CPs/MOFs can be divided into two categories: desolvation and melt-quenching. Desolvation can be preceded by vapor perturbation such as hydration. Carboxylate-based CP/MOF glasses possess the potential to expand into a broader range of applications beyond those of existing CP/MOF glasses. Alongside the diversity offered by carboxylic acid ligands, these materials mirror the extensive range of applications previously explored in the existing carboxylate-based CP/MOF crystals. Moreover, their high processability, inherent to glass materials, enables their applications in various industrial fields. This versatility may extend to previously unexplored areas of utilization such as a novel class of bioactive glass.

Transitioning metal-organic frameworks from the laboratory to market through applied research

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have captivated researchers for over 25 years, yet few have successfully transitioned to commercial markets. This Perspective elucidates the progress, challenges and opportunities in moving MOFs to market, focusing on applied research. The five applied research steps that enable technology development and demonstration are reviewed: synthesis, forming, processing (washing and activation), prototyping and compliance. Furthermore, the importance of a comprehensive techno-economic analysis incorporating a complete picture of costs and revenues is discussed. Readers can use the understanding of applied research presented herein to tackle their MOF commercialization challenges.

Binary-Cooperative Ultrathin Porous Membrane for Gas Separation

The construction of ultrathin porous membranes with stable structures is critical for achieving efficient gas separation. Inspired by the binary-cooperative structural features of bones and teeth-composed of rigid hydroxyapatite and flexible collagen, which confer excellent mechanical strength-a binary-cooperative porous membrane constructed with gel-state zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (g-ZIFs), synthesized using a metal-gel-induced strategy, is proposed. The enlarged cavity size and flexible frameworks of the g-ZIF nanoparticles significantly improve gas adsorption and diffusion, respectively. After thermal treatment, the coordination structures forming rigid segments in the g-ZIF membranes appear at the stacked g-ZIF boundaries, exhibiting a higher Young's modulus than the g-ZIF nanoparticles, denoted as the flexible segments. The g-ZIF membranes demonstrate excellent tensile and compression resistances, attributed to the effective translation of binary-cooperative effects of rigidity and flexibility into the membranes. The resulting dual-aperture structure, composed of g-ZIF nanoparticles surrounded by nanoscale apertures at the boundaries, yields a membrane with a stable CO2 permeance of 4834 GPU and CO2/CH4 selectivity of 90 within 3.0 MPa.

Stable and efficient rare-earth free phosphors based on an Mg(II) metal-organic framework for hybrid light-emitting diodes

Stable and efficient green hybrid light-emitting diodes (HLEDs) were fabricated from a highly emissive Mg(II)-tetraphenyl ethylene derivative metal-organic framework embedded in a polystyrene matrix (Mg-TBC MOF@PS). The photoluminescence quantum yield (ϕ) of the material, >80%, remains constant upon polymer embedment. The resulting HLEDs featured high luminous efficiencies of >50 lm W-1 and long lifetimes of >380 h, making them among the most stable MOF-based HLEDs. The significance of this work relies on the combination of many features, such as the abundance of the metal ion, the straightforward scalability of the synthetic protocol, the great ϕ reached upon phosphor fabrication, and the state-of-the-art HLED performances.

Recent advances in zinc-ion dehydration strategies for optimized Zn-metal batteries

Aqueous Zn-metal batteries have attracted increasing interest for large-scale energy storage owing to their outstanding merits in terms of safety, cost and production. However, they constantly suffer from inadequate energy density and poor cycling stability due to the presence of zinc ions in the fully hydrated solvation state. Thus, designing the dehydrated solvation structure of zinc ions can effectively address the current drawbacks of aqueous Zn-metal batteries. In this case, considering the lack of studies focused on strategies for the dehydration of zinc ions, herein, we present a systematic and comprehensive review to deepen the understanding of zinc-ion solvation regulation. Two fundamental design principles of component regulation and pre-desolvation are summarized in terms of solvation environment formation and interfacial desolvation behavior. Subsequently, specific strategy based distinct principles are carefully discussed, including preparation methods, working mechanisms, analysis approaches and performance improvements. Finally, we present a general summary of the issues addressed using zinc-ion dehydration strategies, and four critical aspects to promote zinc-ion solvation regulation are presented as an outlook, involving updating (de)solvation theories, revealing interfacial evolution, enhancing analysis techniques and developing functional materials. We believe that this review will not only stimulate more creativity in optimizing aqueous electrolytes but also provide valuable insights into designing other battery systems.

Fabrication of magnetic carbohydrate-modified iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4/pectin) decorated with bimetallic Co/Cu-MOF as an effective and recoverable catalyst for the Biginelli reaction

Due to their biocompatibility, facile recoverability, mechanical and thermal stability, high surface area, and active catalytic sites, magnetic nanocomposites, containing natural polymers and magnetic nanoparticles, have been used to produce supports for catalysts or biocatalysts. Pectin, an important polycarbohydrate, has abundant functional groups with excellent ability to coat the surface of the nanoparticles to fabricate composite and hybrid materials. A novel bimetallic cobalt(ii) and copper(ii)-based metal-organic framework (Co/Cu-MOF) immobilized pectin-modified Fe3O4 magnetic nanocomposite was designed and fabricated. Fe3O4 nanoparticles were modified in situ by pectin and, subsequently, used as a support for growing Co/Cu-MOF [Fe3O4/pectin/(Co/Cu)MOF]. The properties of the nanocomposite were investigated by FT-IR, XRD, SEM, EDS, VSM, STA, and BET. The nanocomposite exhibited both magnetic characteristics and a high surface area, making it a suitable candidate for catalytic applications. Then, the Fe3O4/pectin/(Co/Cu)MOF nanocomposite was utilized in the Biginelli reaction for the production of biologically active dihydropyrimidinones. Due to paramagnetism, Fe3O4/pectin/(Co/Cu)MOF was easily recovered and reused in six cycles without significant loss in reactivity. This green method comprises several benefits, such as mild reaction conditions, free-solvent media, high yields, easy workup, short reaction times and reusability of the prepared catalyst.

Hydroxyl-functionalized microporous polymer membranes with tunable para position substituent benzaldehydes for gas separation

We report hydroxyl-functionalized microporous polymers with tunable benzaldehyde groups for gas separation membranes. These polymers were synthesized via acid-catalyzed Friedel-Crafts polycondensation. The tunability in d-spacing and fractional free volume of these polymers depends on the para position substituents (-H, -F, -Cl, and -Br) of the benzaldehyde. Specifically, the size and polarity of the para position substituent influence the polymer chain-packing structure. Consequently, the hydroxyl-functionalized microporous polymer membrane with a larger para position substituent in the benzaldehyde group exhibited improved gas permeability. This improvement is due to enhanced gas diffusivity resulting from the inefficient polymer chain-packing structure. Furthermore, these membranes demonstrated enhanced CO2 plasticization resistance, attributable to the rigid, contorted polymer structure and the hydrogen bonding interactions between hydroxyl groups. This study provides insights into the relationship between the polymer chain-packing structure, tunable para position substituents, and molecular transport.

Tuning MOF/polymer interfacial pore geometry in mixed matrix membrane for upgrading CO2 separation performance

The current paradigm considers the control of the MOF/polymer interface mostly for achieving a good compatibility between the two components to ensure the fabrication of continuous mixed-matrix metal-organic framework (MMMOF) membranes. Here, we unravel that the interfacial pore shape nanostructure plays a key role for an optimum molecular transport. The prototypical ultrasmall pore AlFFIVE-1-Ni MOF was assembled with the polymer PIM-1 to design a composite with gradually expanding pore from the MOF entrance to the MOF/polymer interfacial region. Concentration gradient-driven molecular dynamics simulations demonstrated that this pore nanostructuring enables an optimum guided path for the gas molecules at the MOF/polymer interface that decisively leads to an acceleration of the molecular transport all along the MMMOF membrane. This numerical prediction resulted in the successful fabrication of a [001]-oriented nanosheets AlFFIVE-1-Ni/PIM-1 MMMOF membrane exhibiting an excellent CO2 permeability, better than many MMMs, and ideally associated with a sufficiently high CO2/CH4 selectivity that makes this membrane very promising for natural gas/biogas purification.

Controlling the Uptake and Release of Semiochemicals in Channel-Type Metal-Organic Frameworks Through Pore Expansion

Semiochemicals can be used to manipulate insect behaviour for sustainable pest management strategies, but their high volatility is a major issue for their practical implementation. Inclusion of these molecules within porous materials is a potential solution to this issue, as it can allow for a slower and more controlled release. In this work, we demonstrate that a series of Zr(IV) and Al(III) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with channel-type pores enable controlled release of three semiochemicals over 100 days by pore size design, with the uptake and rate of release highly dependent on the pore size. Insight from grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations indicates that this is due to weaker MOF-guest interactions per guest molecule as the pore size increases. These MOFs are all stable post-release and can be reloaded to show near-identical re-release profiles. These results provide valuable insight on the diffusion behaviour of volatile guests in MOFs, and for the further development of porous materials for sustainable agriculture applications.

Recent Progress in MOF-Aerogel Fabrication and Applications

Recent advancements in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) underscore their significant potential in chemical and materials research, owing to their remarkable properties and diverse structures. Despite challenges like intrinsic brittleness, powdered crystalline nature, and limited stability impeding direct applications, MOF-based aerogels have shown superior performance in various areas, particularly in water treatment and contaminant removal. This review highlights the latest progress in MOF-based aerogels, with a focus on hybrid systems incorporating materials like graphene, carbon nanotube, silica, and cellulose in MOF aerogels, which enhance their functional properties. The manifold advantages of MOF-based aerogels in energy storage, adsorption, and catalysis are discussed, with an emphasizing on their improved stability, processability, and ease of handling. This review aims to unlock the potential of MOF-based aerogels and their real-world applications. Aerogels are expected to reshape the technological landscape of MOFs through enhanced stability, adaptability, and efficiency.

Metal-Organic-Frameworks Based Mixed-Matrix Membranes for CO2 Separation: An Applicable-Conceptual Approach

A promising class of porous crystalline materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), have recently emerged as a potential material in fabricating mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for gas separation applications. Their unique chemistry and structural versatility offer substantial advantages over conventional fillers. This review gives an in-depth exploration of MOF chemistry, focusing on strategies to manipulate their adsorption behavior to enhance separation properties. We scrutinize the impact of various MOF-based MMM components, including polymer matrix, MOFs fillers and polymer/filler interface, on the overall gas separation performance. This involves a detailed analysis of key parameters associated with MMM preparation. Additionally, we offer a comprehensive overview of the determining factors in MOF-based MMM development for gas separation, including MOF structure, synthesis, and chemistry. Moreover, the most advances in modification strategies of MOF for CO2 separation, such as a wide variety of hybrid MOFs will be outlined, which opens the door to an improved CO2 separation process. Finally, the gas transport mechanisms of MMMs are thoroughly discussed to understand the factors affecting the gas permeation through the polymer matrix, MOFs and interface between them.

Construction of a series of pH stable Ca-based MOFs, their CO2 adsorption and catalytic activity

In this study, three different solvent systems have been employed to investigate the effect of reaction parameters on the synthesis of four alkaline earth metal-based MOFs namely [Ca(0.5 1,4-phenyl diacetic acid)2(H2O)DMF]∞ (Ca-MOF-1), [Ca(1,4-naphthalene dicarboxylate)DMF]∞ (Ca-MOF-2), [Ca2(0.5 1,2,4,5-benzene tetracarboxylate)2(H2O)3DMF]∞ (Ca-MOF-3) and [Ca2(2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylate)2(H2O)6]∞ (Ca-MOF-4). The crystal structures of these four MOFs have been resolved through single crystal X-ray analysis and the bulk phase purity of these MOFs was assessed using PXRD and FT-IR analysis. To check the stability of these MOFs, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was carried out. To analyze the robustness of these MOFs, the PXRD of the samples was also collected at different pH levels. These MOFs were further explored as Lewis acid catalysts for the alcoholysis of epoxides and the activity of these catalysts depend on the open metal sites present in the MOFs. The catalytic activity follows the order: Ca-MOF-2 > Ca-MOF-4 > Ca-MOF-1 > Ca-MOF-3. The activity was also checked with various epoxide substrates using Ca-MOF-2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations also support this trend with the help of the thermodynamic feasibility of epoxide binding, considering model MOF structures. The weak interaction between the epoxide oxygen and the metal centre of the most stable MOF structure has also been clarified by computational studies.

Recent progress on CO2 separation membranes

Presently, excessive carbon dioxide emissions represent a critical environmental challenge. Thus, urgent efforts are required to develop environmentally friendly and low-energy technologies for carbon dioxide treatment. In this case, membrane separation technology stands out as a promising avenue for CO2 separation, with selective membrane materials of high permeability playing a pivotal role in this process. Herein, we categorize CO2 separation membranes into three groups: inorganic membranes, organic membranes, and emerging membranes. Moreover, representative high-performance membranes are introduced and their synthesis methods, gas separation performances, and applications are examined. Furthermore, a brief analysis of the challenges encountered by carbon dioxide separation membrane materials is provided together with a discussion on the future research direction. It is expected that this review will provide some potential insights and guidance for the future development of CO2 separation membranes, which can promote their development.

Downsizing and soft X-ray tomography for cellular uptake of interpenetrated metal-organic frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous materials with potential in biomedical applications such as sensing, drug delivery, and radiosensitization. However, how to tune the properties of the MOFs for such applications remains challenging. Herein, we synthesized two MOFs, Zr-PEB and Hf-PEB. Zr-PEB can be classified as porous interpenetrated zirconium frameworks (PIZOFs) and Hf-PEB is its analogue. We controlled their sizes while maintaining their crystal structure by employing a coordination modulation strategy. They were designed to serve as sensitizer for X-ray therapy and as potential drug carriers. Comprehensive characterizations of the MOFs' properties have been conducted, and the in vitro biological impacts have been studied. Since viability assay showed that Hf-PEB was more biocompatible compared to Zr-PEB, the cellular uptake of Hf-PEB by cells was evaluated using both fluorescence microscopy and soft X-ray tomography (SXT), and the three-dimensional structure of Hf-PEB in cells was observed. The results revealed the potential of Zr-PEB and Hf-PEB as nanomaterials for biomedical applications and demonstrated that SXT is an effective tool to assist the development of such materials.

Interface-regulated S-type core-shell PCN-224@TiO2 heterojunction for visible-light-driven generation of singlet oxygen for selective photooxidation of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide

Selective oxidation of sulfur mustard gas (HD) to non-toxic sulfoxide by the visible-light-catalyzed generation of singlet oxygen (1O2) is a promising degradation strategy. Although PCN-224 can absorb visible light, it suffers from rapid electron-hole recombination and low redox capacity, which limits the performance of HD degradation. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is an excellent photocatalyst but it lacks visible-light-activity in degrading HD. In this study, PCN-224@TiO2 heterojunction with S-type core-shell structure was synthesized by in-situ growth method to prolong the visible light absorption capacity of TiO2 and inhibit the rapid recombination of PCN-224. The interface formation and internal electric field were optimized by adjusting the Zr/Ti ratio to enhance the charge transfer, redox capacity, electron-hole separation, and visible light absorption. In this study, the formation of heterojunction composites based on Zr-O-Ti linkages is demonstrated by a series of characterization methods. It is demonstrated by experiments and theoretical calculations that PCN-224@TiO2 can generate nearly 100 % 1O2 under visible light conditions without a sacrificial agent, resulting in efficient and selective oxidation of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES), a simulant of HD, to non-toxic sulfoxide form.

Syntheses of heterometallic organic frameworks catalysts via multicomponent postmodification: For improving CO2 photoreduction efficiency

To enhance the economic viability of photocatalytic materials for carbon capture and conversion, the challenge of employing expensive photosensitizer must be overcome. This study aims to improve the visible light utilization with zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) by employing a multi-component post-synthetic modification (PSM) strategy. An economical photosensitiser and copper ions are introduced into MOF 808 to enhance its photoreduction properties. Notably, the PSM of MOF 808 shows the highest CO yield up to 236.5 μmol g-1 h-1 with aHCOOH production of 993.6 μmol g-1 h-1 under non-noble metal, and its mechanistic insight for CO2 reaction is discussed in detail. The research results have important reference value for the potential application of photocatalytic metal-organic frameworks.

Calcium-Based Metal-Organic Framework: Detection and Idiosyncratic Removal of Copper by Nano-Particle Deposition

A novel calcium-based metal-organic framework (CaMOF@LSB) was designed and synthesized, exhibiting dual functionality for both selective detection and removal of Cu2+ ions from aqueous solutions. The framework's stability, including solvent and pH variations, was established with notable thermal resilience. Colorimetric Cu2+ detection (≥5 ppm) with a high capture capacity of 484.2 mg g-1 by CaMOF@LSB places this material among the few that ensure efficient colorimetric detection and high removal capabilities of Cu2+ ions. Batch adsorption experiments revealed pH-dependent behavior and competitive interactions. Langmuir and pseudo-second-order kinetics models aptly described adsorption isotherms and kinetics, respectively. Thermodynamic assessments confirmed spontaneous and endothermic adsorption. Mechanistically, nanoparticle deposition contributes to the Cu2+ uptake. CaMOF@LSB also exhibited one of the best removal behaviour of Cu2+ by means of oxide formation on the surface. Regeneration of CaMOF@LSB was achieved by simple sonication in 0.1 M aqueous NaOH solution. The recyclability was also tested up to 5 cycles, and it exhibited a small decrease in adsorption capacity observed across the cycles. This research presents a promising avenue for addressing heavy metal pollution using metal-organic frameworks, thereby offering potential applications in water purification and environmental pollution monitoring and remediation.

Effect of Co-Adsorbed Guest Adsorbates on the Separation of Ethylene/Ethane Mixtures on Metal-Organic Frameworks with Open Metal Sites

Direct determination of the equilibrium adsorption and spectroscopic observation of adsorbent-adsorbate interaction is crucial to evaluate the olefin/paraffin separation performance of porous adsorbents. However, the experimental characterization of competitive adsorption of various adsorbates at atomic-molecular level in the purification of multicomponent gas mixtures is challenging and rarely conducted. Herein, solid-state NMR spectroscopy is employed to examine the effect of co-adsorbed guest adsorbates on the separation of ethylene/ethane mixtures on Mg-MOF-74, Zn-MOF-74 and UTSA-74. 1H MAS NMR facilitates the determination of equilibrium uptake and adsorption selectivity of ethylene/ethane in ternary mixtures. The co-adsorption of H2O and CO2 significantly leads to the degradation of ethylene uptake and ethylene/ethane selectivity. The detailed host-guest and guest-guest interactions are unraveled by 2D 1H-1H spin diffusion homo-nuclear correlation and static 25Mg NMR experiments. The experimental results verify H2O coordinated on open metal sites can supply a new adsorption site for ethylene and ethane. The effects of guest adsorbates on the adsorption capacity and adsorption selectivity of ethylene/ethane mixtures are in the following order: H2O>CO2>O2. This work provides a direct approach for exploring the equilibrium adsorption and detailed separation mechanism of multicomponent gas mixtures using MOFs adsorbents.

Highly Permeable Mixed Matrix Membranes for Gas Separation via Dual Defect-Engineered Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8

Defect engineering of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is a promising strategy for tailoring the interfacial characteristics between MOFs and polymers, aiming to create high-performance mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). This study introduces a new approach using dual defective alkylamine (AA)-modulated zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (DAZIF-8), to develop high-flux MMMs. Tributylamine (TBA) and triethylamine (TEA) monodentate ligands coordinate with zinc ions in varying compositions. A mixture of Zn(CH3COO)2·2H2O:2-methylimidazole (Mim):AA in a 1:1.75:5 molar ratio facilitates high-yield coordination between Zn and multiple organic ligands, including Zn-Mim, Zn-TEA, and Zn-TBA (>80%). Remarkably, DAZIF-8 containing 3 mol% TBA and 2 mol% TEA exhibits exceptional characteristics, such as a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of 1745 m2 g-1 and enhanced framework rigidity. Furthermore, dual Zn-AA coordination sites on the framework's outer surface enhance compatibility with the polyimide (PI) matrix through electron donor-acceptor interactions, enabling the fabrication of high-loading MMMs with excellent mechanical durability. Importantly, the PI/DAZIF-8 (60/40 w/w) MMM demonstrates an unprecedented 759% enhancement in ethylene (C2H4) permeability (281 Barrer) with a moderate ethylene/ethane (C2H4/C2H6) selectivity of 2.95 compared to the PI, surpassing the polymeric upper limit for C2H4/C2H6 separation.

Self-Sorting of Interfacial Compatibility in MOF-Based Mixed Matrix Membranes

Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) have shown great promises to overcome the performance upper limit of polymeric membranes for various gas separation processes. However, the gas separation properties of the MMMs largely depend on the MOF-polymer interfacial compatibility which is a metric difficult to quantify. In most cases, whether a MOF filler and a polymer matrix make a good pair is not revealed until the gas transport experiments are performed. This is because there is a lack of characterization techniques to directly probe the MOF-polymer interfacial compatibility. In this work, we demonstrate a self-sorting method to rank the interface compatibility among several MOF-polymer pairs. By mixing one MOF with two polymers in an MMM, the demixing of two polymers will form two polymer domains. The MOF particles will preferably partition into the "preferred" polymer domain due to their higher interfacial affinity. By scanning different polymer pairs, a rank of MOF-polymer interfacial compatibility from high to low can be obtained. Moreover, based on this ranking, it was also found that a highly compatible MOF-polymer pair suggested by this method also corresponds to a more predictable MMM gas separation performance.

Biomimetic ZIF-8 Nanoparticles: A Novel Approach for Biomimetic Drug Delivery Systems

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous materials resulting from the coordination of metal clusters or ions with organic ligands, merging macromolecular and coordination chemistry features. Among these, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) stands out as a widely utilized MOF known for its robust stability in aqueous environments owing to the robust interaction between its constituent zinc ions (Zn2+) and 2-methylimidazole (2-MIM). ZIF-8 readily decomposes under acidic conditions, serving as a promising candidate for pH-responsive drug delivery systems. Moreover, biomimetic materials typically possess good biocompatibility, reducing immune reactions. By mimicking natural structures or surface features within the body, they enhance the targeting of nanoparticles, prolong their circulation time, and increase their bioavailability in vivo. This review explores the latest advancements in biomimetic ZIF-8 nanoparticles for drug delivery, elucidating the primary obstacles and future prospects in utilizing ZIF-8 for drug delivery applications.

Functionalisation of MUF-15 enhances CO2/CH4 selectivity in mixed-matrix membranes

MUF-15 (MUF = Massey University Framework) is a metal-organic framework with pores that can be tuned by ligand functionalisation. Crystallites of MUF-15 and derivatives were blended with the organic polymer 6FDA-DAM to produce mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs). At a loading of 30 wt%, membranes with MUF-15-F, MUF-15 with an appended fluoro group, exhibited a CO2 permeability of 1300 Barrer and CO2/CH4 selectivity of 37.1. These values surpass membranes with the parent MUF-15 and exceed the Robeson upper bound.

ChatMOF: an artificial intelligence system for predicting and generating metal-organic frameworks using large language models

ChatMOF is an artificial intelligence (AI) system that is built to predict and generate metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). By leveraging a large-scale language model (GPT-4, GPT-3.5-turbo, and GPT-3.5-turbo-16k), ChatMOF extracts key details from textual inputs and delivers appropriate responses, thus eliminating the necessity for rigid and formal structured queries. The system is comprised of three core components (i.e., an agent, a toolkit, and an evaluator) and it forms a robust pipeline that manages a variety of tasks, including data retrieval, property prediction, and structure generations. ChatMOF shows high accuracy rates of 96.9% for searching, 95.7% for predicting, and 87.5% for generating tasks with GPT-4. Additionally, it successfully creates materials with user-desired properties from natural language. The study further explores the merits and constraints of utilizing large language models (LLMs) in combination with database and machine learning in material sciences and showcases its transformative potential for future advancements.

Design of Mixed-Matrix MOF Membranes with Asymmetric Filler Density and Intrinsic MOF/Polymer Compatibility for Enhanced Molecular Sieving

The separation of high-value-added chemicals from organic solvents is important for many industries. Membrane-based nanofiltration offers a more energy-efficient separation than the conventional thermal processes. Conceivably, mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs), encompassing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as fillers, are poised to promote selective separation via molecular sieving, synergistically combining polymers flexibility and fine-tuned porosity of MOFs. Nevertheless, conventional direct mixing of MOFs with polymer solutions results in underutilization of the MOF fillers owing to their uniform cross-sectional distribution. Therefore, in this work, a multizoning technique is proposed to produce MMMs with an asymmetric-filler density, in which the MOF fillers are distributed only on the surface of the membrane, and a seamless interface at the nanoscale. The design strategy demonstrates five times higher MOF surface coverage, which results in a solvent permeance five times higher than that of conventional MMMs while maintaining high selectivity. Practically, MOFs are paired with polymers of similar chemical nature to enhance their adhesion without the need for surface modification. The approach offers permanently accessible MOF porosity, which translates to effective molecular sieving, as exemplified by the polybenzimidazole and Zr-BI-fcu-MOF system. The findings pave the way for the development of composite materials with a seamless interface.

Functional metal-organic liquids

For decades, the study of coordination polymers (CPs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been limited primarily to their behavior as crystalline solids. In recent years, there has been increasing evidence that they can undergo reversible crystal-to-liquid transitions. However, their "liquid" states have primarily been considered intermediate states, and their diverse properties and applications of the liquid itself have been overlooked. As we learn from organic polymers, ceramics, and metals, understanding the structures and properties of liquid states is essential for exploring new properties and functions that are not achievable in their crystalline state. This review presents state-of-the-art research on the liquid states of CPs and MOFs while discussing the fundamental concepts involved in controlling them. We consider the different types of crystal-to-liquid transitions found in CPs and MOFs while extending the interpretation toward other functional metal-organic liquids, such as metal-containing ionic liquids and porous liquids, and try to suggest the unique features of CP/MOF liquids. We highlight their potential applications and present an outlook for future opportunities.

Effective C4 Separation by Zeolite Metal-Organic Framework Composite Membranes

Inorganic zeolites have excellent molecular sieving properties, but they are difficult to process into macroscopic structures. In this work, we use metal-organic framework (MOF) glass as substrates to engineer the interface with inorganic zeolites, and then assemble the discrete crystalline zeolite powders into monolithic structures. The zeolites are well dispersed and stabilized within the MOF glass matrix, and the monolith has satisfactory mechanical stabilities for membrane applications. We demonstrate the effective separation performance of the membrane for 1,3-butadiene (C4H6) from other C4 hydrocarbons, which is a crucial and challenging separation in the chemical industry. The membrane achieves a high permeance of C4H6 (693.00±21.83 GPU) and a high selectivity over n-butene, n-butane, isobutene, and isobutane (9.72, 9.94, 10.31, and 11.94, respectively). This strategy opens up new possibilities for developing advanced membrane materials for difficult hydrocarbon separations.

Fluorescent sensor based on bismuth metal-organic frameworks (Bi-MOFs) mimic enzyme for H2O2 detection in real samples and distinction of phenylenediamine isomers

Although peroxidase-like nano-enzymes have been widely utilized in biosensors, nano-enzyme based biosensors are seldom used for both quantitative analysis of H2O2 and differentiation of isomers of organic compounds simultaneously. In this study, a dual-functional mimetic enzyme-based fluorescent sensor was constructed using metal-organic frameworks (Bi-MOFs) with exceptional oxidase activity and fluorescence properties. This mimetic enzyme sensor facilitated quantitative analysis of H2O2 and accurate discrimination of phenylenediamine isomers. The sensor exhibited a wide linear range (0.5-400 μM) and low detection limit (0.16 μM) for the detection of H2O2. Moreover, the sensor can also be used for the discrimination of phenylenediamine isomers, in which the presence of o-phenylenediamine (OPD) leads to the appearance of a new fluorescence emission peak at 555 nm, while the presence of p-phenylenediamine (PPD) significantly quenched its fluorescence due to the internal filtration effect. The proposed strategy exhibited a commendable capability in distinguishing phenylenediamine isomers, thereby paving the way for novel applications of MOFs in the field of environmental science.

Effect of pyrolysis temperature on characteristics and chloramphenicol adsorption performance of NH2-MIL-53(Al)-derived amine-functionalized porous carbons

Several activities such as aquaculture, human and feedstock therapies can directly release antibiotics into water. Due to high stability, low hydrolysis and non-biodegradation, they can accumulate in the aqueous environment and transport to aquatic species. Here, we synthesized amine-functionalized porous carbons (ANC) by a direct-pyrolysis process of NH2-MIL-53(Al) as a sacrificial template at between 600 and 900 °C and utilized them to eliminate chloramphenicol antibiotic from water. The NH2-MIL-53(Al)-derived porous carbons obtained high surface areas (304.7-1600 m2 g-1) and chloramphenicol adsorption capacities (148.3-261.5 mg g-1). Several factors such as hydrogen bonding, Yoshida hydrogen bonding, and π-π interaction, hydrophobic interaction possibly controlled adsorption mechanisms. The ANC800 could be reused four cycles along with high stability in structure. As a result, NH2-MIL-53(Al)-derived porous carbons are recommended as recyclable and efficient adsorbents to the treatment of antibiotics in water.

Organic-inorganic hybrid ZIF-8/MXene/cellulose-based textiles with improved antibacterial and electromagnetic interference shielding performance

Despite the tremendous efforts on developing antibacterial wearable textile materials containing Ti3C2Tx MXene, the singular antimicrobial mechanism, poor antibacterial durability, and oxidation susceptibility of MXene limits their applications. In this context, flexible multifunctional cellulosic textiles were prepared via layer-by-layer assembly of MXene and the in-situ synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8). Specifically, the introduction of highly conductive MXene enhanced the interface interactions between the ZIF-8 layer and cellulose fibers, endowing the green-based materials with outstanding synergistic photothermal/photodynamic therapy (PTT/PDT) activity and adjustable electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance. In-situ polymerization formed a MXene/ZIF-8 bilayer structure, promoting the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) while protecting MXene from oxidation. The as-prepared smart textile exhibited excellent bactericidal efficacy of >99.99 % against both Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) after 5 min of NIR (300 mW cm-2) irradiation which is below the maximum permissible exposure (MPE) limit. The sustained released Zn2+ from the ZIF-8 layer achieved a bactericidal efficiency of over 99.99 % within 48 h without NIR light. Furthermore, this smart textile also demonstrated remarkable EMI shielding efficiency (47.7 dB). Clearly, this study provides an elaborate strategy for designing and constructing multifunctional cellulose-based materials for a variety of applications.

Highly Transparent, Yet Photoluminescent: 2D CdSe/CdS Nanoplatelet-Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework Composites Sensitive to Gas Adsorption

In this work, thin composite films of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) and colloidal two-dimensional (2D) core-crown CdSe/CdS nanoplatelet (NPL) emitters with minimal scattering are formed by a cycled growth method and yield highly transparent coatings with strong and narrow photoluminescence of the NPLs at 546 nm (FWHM: 25 nm) in a solid-state composite structure. The porous ZIF matrix acts as functional encapsulation for the emitters and enables the adsorption of the guest molecules water and ethanol. The adsorption and desorption of the guest molecules is then characterized by a reversable photoluminescence change of the embedded NPLs. The transmittance of the composite films exceeds the values of uncoated glass at visible wavelengths where the NPL emitters show no absorption (>540 nm) and renders them anti-reflective coatings. At NPL absorption wavelengths (440-540 nm), the transmittance of the thin composite film-coated glass lies close to the transmittance of uncoated glass. The fast formation of innovative, smooth NPL/ZIF composite films without pre-polymerizing the colloidal 2D nanostructures first provides a powerful tool toward application-oriented photoluminescence-based gas sensing.

Metal-Organic Framework-Enabled Trapping of Volatile Organic Compounds into Plasmonic Nanogaps for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Detection

Utilizing electromagnetic hotspots within plasmonic nanogaps is a promising approach to create ultrasensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates. However, it is difficult for many molecules to get positioned in such nanogaps. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are commonly used to absorb and concentrate diverse molecules. Herein, we combine these two strategies by introducing MOFs into plasmon-coupled nanogaps, which has so far remained experimentally challenging. Ultrasensitive SERS substrates are fabricated through the construction of nanoparticle-on-mirror structures, where Au nanocrystals are encapsulated with a zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) shell and then coupled to a gold film. The ZIF-8 shell, as a spacer that separates the Au nanocrystal and the Au film, can be adjusted in thickness over a wide range, which allows the electric field enhancement and plasmon resonance wavelength to be varied. By trapping Raman-active molecules within the ZIF-8 shell, we show that our plasmon-coupled structures exhibit a superior SERS detection performance. A range of volatile organic compounds at the concentrations of 10-2 mg m-3 can be detected sensitively and reliably. Our study therefore offers an attractive route for synergistically combining plasmonic electric field enhancement and MOF-enabled molecular enrichment to design and create SERS substrates for ultrasensitive detection.

Recent advances in the interfacial engineering of MOF-based mixed matrix membranes for gas separation

The membrane process stands as a promising and transformative technology for efficient gas separation due to its high energy efficiency, operational simplicity, low environmental impact, and easy up-and-down scaling. Metal-organic framework (MOF)-polymer mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) combine MOFs' superior gas-separation performance with polymers' processing versatility, offering the opportunity to address the limitations of pure polymer or inorganic membranes for large-scale integration. However, the incompatibility between the rigid MOFs and flexible polymer chains poses a challenge in MOF MMM fabrication, which can cause issues such as MOF agglomeration, sedimentation, and interfacial defects, substantially weakening membrane separation efficiency and mechanical properties, particularly gas separation. This review focuses on engineering MMMs' interfaces, detailing recent strategies for reducing interfacial defects, improving MOF dispersion, and enhancing MOF loading. Advanced characterisation techniques for understanding membrane properties, specifically the MOF-polymer interface, are outlined. Lastly, it explores the remaining challenges in MMM research and outlines potential future research directions.

Layer by Layer Spraying Fabrication of Aggregation-Induced Emission Metal-Organic Frameworks Thin Film

The development of new metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) thin films is important for expanding their functions and applications. Herein, we first report a new kind of MOF thin film by using aggregation-induced emission (AIE) dicarboxyl ligand through a liquid-phase epitaxial (LPE) layer-by-layer (LBL) spraying method (named AIE surface-coordinated metal-organic frameworks thin film, AIE-SURMOF). The obtained AIE-SURMOF Zn4O(TPE)3 (ZnTPE) has highly growth orientation and homogeneous thin film, showing strong fluorescent property. Furthermore, by loading chiral guest in the MOF pore, the formed chiral encapsulated AIE-SURMOF can clearly indicate obvious circularly polarized luminescence performance with glum of 0.01. This study provides new MOF thin film and new strategy for expanding function and application of MOF materials.

Ionic Cross-Linked MOF-Polymer Mixed-Matrix Membranes for Suppressing Interfacial Defects and Plasticization Behavior

To address the plasticization phenomenon and MOF-polymer interfacial defects, we report the synthesis of ionic cross-linked MOF MMMs from a dual brominated polymer and MOF components by using N,N'-dimethylpiperazine as the cross-linker. We synthesized brominated MIL-101(Cr) nanoparticles by using mixed linkers and prepared brominated polyimide (6FDA-DAM-Br) to form ionic cross-linked MMMs. The gas permeation properties of the polyimide, ionic cross-linked MOF-polymer MMMs, and non-cross-linked MOF-polymer MMMs with various MOF weight loadings were investigated systematically to effectively understand the effects of MOF weight loading and ionic cross-linking. The ionic cross-linked 40 wt % MOF-polymer MMM exhibited significantly enhanced gas permeability with an H2 permeability of 1640 Barrer and CO2 permeability of 1981 Barrer and slightly decreased H2/CH4, H2/N2, CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 selectivities of 16.9, 15.4, 20.5, and 18.6, respectively. The H2 and CO2 permeabilities are approximately 2-3 fold higher than those of the pure polyimide (6FDA-DAM) membrane. Moreover, the ionic cross-linked 40 wt % MOF-polymer MMM exhibited significantly increased resistance to plasticization. This is because the brominated MOF incorporation boosted molecular transport and polymer chain rigidity, and ionic cross-linking further reduced the number of interfacial defects and polymer chain mobility.

Metal Organic Frameworks Synthesis: The Versatility of Triethylamine

Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are organic-inorganic hybrid materials with exceptionally customizable composition and properties. MOFs intrinsically possess open metal sites, tunable pore size/shape and an ultra-large specific surface area, and have obtained significant attention over the past 30 years. Furthermore, through the integration of functional moieties such as, molecules, functional groups, noble metal clusters and nanocrystals or nanoparticles into MOFs, the resulting composites have greatly enriched the physical and chemical properties of pure MOFs, enabling their application in a wider range of fields. Triethylamine (TEA) as an organic base has consistently played a fundamental role in the development of MOFs. In this Concept, the versatility of triethylamine when involved in the synthesis of MOFs is discussed. Four sections are used to elaborate on the role of TEA including: (1) Single crystal synthesis; (2) Size and morphology control; (3) Counterion of MOFs; (4) MOFs composites synthesis. In the last part, we highlight the potential of TEA for further developments.

Naphthalene Tetrazole-Based Nickel Metal-Organic Framework as a Filler of Polycarbonate Membranes to Improve CO2 and H2 Separation

A tetrazole-naphthalene linker was used to prepare a nickel MOF (metal-organic framework) (NiNDTz) with interesting properties: a specific surface area SBET of 320 m2g-1 (SLangmuir 436 m2g-1), high thermal stability (Tdonset = 300 °C), and CO2 uptake of 1.85 mmolg-1, attributed to the tetrazole groups to be used as fillers in gas separation membranes. The role of these groups was crucial in the mechanical properties of mixed membranes prepared using polycarbonate as a polymer matrix, providing a very homogeneous filler distribution and also in the gas separation properties since a simultaneous increase in permeability and selectivity was achieved, especially in the hybrid membrane containing 20% filler (PC@NiNDTz-20%). This membrane exhibited an excellent balance between permeability (P) and selectivity (α) with an increase in the permeability of CO2 and H2, 177 and 185%, respectively, and improvements in the selectivity of these gases against greenhouse gases such as methane and ethylene (between 15 and 28% improvement). These results make this membrane competitive to deal with separations in which these gases are involved, and are of special interest for the H2/CH4 separation since it clearly improves the performance of pure PC and no better PC-based membranes have been reported in the literature for this separation.

Designing Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) Membranes for Isomer Separation

Membrane-based separation has the merit of low carbon footprint. In this study, the pore size of metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes is rationally designed for discriminating various pairs of hydrocarbon isomers. Specifically, Zr-MOF UiO-66 (UiO stands for University of Oslo) membranes are developed for separating p/o-xylene due to their proper pore size. For n-hexane/2-methylpentane separation, the functional groups and proportion of the ligands in UiO-66 are gradually adjusted to effectively regulate the pore size, and UiO-66-33Br membranes are constructed. In addition, relying on the utilization of ligands with shorter length, MOF-801 membranes with smaller pore size are fabricated for n/i-butane separation.

Bendable and Chemically Stable Metal-Organic Hybrid Membranes for Molecular Separation

Crystalline porous metal-organic materials are ideal building blocks for separation membranes because of their molecular-sized pores and highly ordered pore structure. However, creating ultrathin, defect-free crystalline membranes is challenging due to inevitable grain boundaries. Herein, we reported an amorphous metal-organic hybrid (MOH) membrane with controlled microporosity. The synthesis of the MOH membrane entails the use of titanium alkoxide and organic linkers containing di/multicarboxyl groups as monomers in the polymerization reaction. The resultant membranes exhibit similar microporosity to existing molecular sieve materials and high chemical stability against harsh chemical environments owing to the formation of stable Ti-O bonds between metal centers and organic linkers. An interfacial polymerization is developed to fabricate an ultrathin MOH membrane (thickness of the membrane down to 80 nm), which exhibits excellent rejections (>98% for dyes with molecular weights larger than 690 Da) and high water permeance (55 L m-2 h-1 bar-1). The membranes also demonstrate good flexibility, which greatly improves the processability of the membrane materials.

Advancements in defect engineering of two-dimensional nanomaterial-based membranes for enhanced gas separation

The advent of two-dimensional nanomaterials, a revolutionary class of materials, is marked by their atomic-scale thickness, superior aspect ratios, robust mechanical attributes, and exceptional chemical stability. These materials, producible on a large scale, are emerging as the forefront candidates in the domain of membrane-based gas separation. The concept of defect engineering in 2D nanomaterials has introduced a novel approach in their application for membrane separation, offering an effective technique to augment the performance of these membranes. Nonetheless, the development of customized microstructures in gas separation membranes via defect engineering remains nascent. Hence, this review is designed to serve as a comprehensive guide for the application of defect engineering in 2D nanomaterial-based membranes. It delves into the most recent developments in this field, encompassing the synthesis methodologies of defective 2D nanomaterials and the mechanisms underlying gas transport. Special emphasis is placed on the utilization of defect-engineered 2D nanomaterial-based membranes in gas capture applications. Furthermore, the paper encapsulates the burgeoning challenges and prospective advancements in this area. In essence, defect engineering emerges as a promising avenue for enhancing the efficacy of 2D nanomaterial-based membranes in gas separation, offering significant potential for advancements in membrane-based gas separation technologies.

Adaptisorption of Nonporous Polymer Crystals

Although our knowledge and understanding of adsorptions in natural and artificial systems has increased dramatically during the past century, adsorption associated with nonporous polymers remains something of a mystery, hampering applications. Here we demonstrate a model system for adaptisorption of nonporous polymers, wherein dative B-N bonds and host-guest binding units act as the kinetic and thermodynamic components, respectively. The coupling of these two components enables nonporous polymer crystals to adsorb molecules from solution and undergo recrystallization as thermodynamically favored crystals. Adaptisorption of nonporous polymer crystals not only extends the types of adsorption in which the sorbate molecules are integrated in a precise and orderly manner in the sorbent systems, but also provides a facile and accurate approach to the construction of polymeric materials with precise architectures and integrated functions.

Prediction of Metal-Organic Frameworks with Phase Transition via Machine Learning

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possess a virtually unlimited number of potential structures. Although the latter enables an efficient route to control the structure-related functional properties of MOFs, it still complicates the prediction and searching for an optimal structure for specific application. Next to prediction of the MOFs for gas sorption/separation and catalysis via machine learning (ML), we report on ML to find MOFs demonstrating a phase transition (PT). On the basis of an available QMOF database (7463 frameworks), we create and train the autoencoder followed by training the classifier of MOFs from a unique database with experimentally confirmed PT. This makes it possible to identify MOFs with a high potential for PT and evaluate the most likely stimulus for it (guest molecules or temperature/pressure). The formed list of available MOFs for PT allows us to discuss their structural features and opens an opportunity to search for phase change MOFs for diverse physical/chemical application.

Effect of penetrant-polymer interactions and shape on the motion of molecular penetrants in dense polymer networks

The diffusion of dilute molecular penetrants within polymers plays a crucial role in the advancement of material engineering for applications such as coatings and membrane separations. The potential of highly cross-linked polymer networks in these applications stems from their capacity to adjust the size and shape selectivity through subtle changes in network structures. In this paper, we use molecular dynamics simulation to understand the role of penetrant shape (aspect ratios) and its interaction with polymer networks on its diffusivity. We characterize both local penetrant hopping and the long-time diffusive motion for penetrants and consider different aspect ratios and penetrant-network interaction strengths at a variety of cross-link densities and temperatures. The shape affects the coupling of penetrant motion to the cross-link density- and temperature-dependent structural relaxation of networks and also affects the way a penetrant experiences the confinement from the network meshes. The attractive interaction between the penetrant and network primarily affects the former since only the system of dilute limit is of present interest. These results offer fundamental insights into the intricate interplay between penetrant characteristics and polymer network properties and also suggest future directions for manipulating polymer design to enhance the separation efficiency.

A novel ZIF-L/PEI thin film nanocomposite membrane for removing perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) from water: Enhanced retention and high flux

Membrane separation technology is widely recognized as an effective method for removing perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in water treatment. ZIF-L, a metal-organic framework (MOF) family characterized by its mat-like cavities and leaf-like morphology, has garnered considerable interest and has been extensively employed in fabricating thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes. In this study, a robust, high-performance TFN membrane to remove PFASs in a nanofiltration (NF) process was created through an interfacial polymerization approach on the surface of polysulfone (PSF), incorporating ZIF-L within the selective layer. The TFN membrane modified by adding 5 wt% ZIF-L (relative to the weight of ethylene imine polymer (PEI)) exhibits 2.3 times higher water flux (up to 47.56 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1) than the pristine thin film composite membrane (20.46 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1), and the rejection for typical PFASs were above 95 % (98.47 % for perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and 95.85 % for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)). The effectiveness of the ZIF-L/PEI TFN membrane in retaining representative PFASs was examined under various conditions, including different pressures, feed concentrations, aqueous environments, and salt ions. Notably, the experiments demonstrated that even after contamination with humic acid (HA), >88 % of the water flux could be restored by washing. Additionally, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to predict the distinct intermolecular interactions between PFASs and ZIF-L as well as PEI. These calculations provide additional insights into the interception mechanism of TFN membranes towards PFASs. Based on this study, TFN membranes incorporating MOF as nanofillers show great potential as an effective method for purifying PFASs from aqueous environments and possess superior environmental sustainability and cost-effectiveness.

Large-Area Conductive MOF Ultrathin Film Controllably Integrating Dinuclear-Metal Sites and Photosensitizers to Boost Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction with H2O as an Electron Donor

Owing to the electrical conductivity and periodic porosity, conductive metal-organic framework (cMOF) ultrathin films open new perspectives to photocatalysis. The space-selective assembly of catalytic sites and photosensitizers in/on cMOF is favorable for promoting the separation of photogenerated carriers and mass transfer. However, the controllable integration of functional units into the cMOF film is rarely reported. Herein, via the synergistic effect of steric hindrance and an electrostatic-driven strategy, the dinuclear-metal molecular catalysts (DMC) and perovskite (PVK) quantum dot photosensitizers were immobilized into channels and onto the surface of cMOF ultrathin films, respectively, affording [DMC@cMOF]-PVK film photocatalysts. In this unique heterostructure, cMOF not only facilitated the charge transfer from PVK to DMC but also guaranteed mass transfer. Using H2O as an electron donor, [DMC@cMOF]-PVK realized a 133.36 μmol·g-1·h-1 CO yield in photocatalytic CO2 reduction, much higher than PVK and DMC-PVK. Owing to the excellent light transmission of films, multilayers of [DMC@cMOF]-PVK were integrated to increase the CO yield per unit area, and the 10-layer device realized a 1115.92 μmol·m-2 CO yield in 4 h, which was 8-fold higher than that of powder counterpart. This work not only lightens the development of cMOF-based composite films but also paves a novel avenue for an ultrathin film photocatalyst.

Penetrant-induced plasticization in microporous polymer membranes

Penetrant-induced plasticization has prevented the industrial deployment of many polymers for membrane-based gas separations. With the advent of microporous polymers, new structural design features and unprecedented property sets are now accessible under controlled laboratory conditions, but property sets can often deteriorate due to plasticization. Therefore, a critical understanding of the origins of plasticization in microporous polymers and the development of strategies to mitigate this effect are needed to advance this area of research. Herein, an integrative discussion is provided on seminal plasticization theory and gas transport models, and these theories and models are compared to an exhaustive database of plasticization characteristics of microporous polymers. Correlations between specific polymer properties and plasticization behavior are presented, including analyses of plasticization pressures from pure-gas permeation tests and mixed-gas permeation tests for pure polymers and composite films. Finally, an evaluation of common and current state-of-the-art strategies to mitigate plasticization is provided along with suggestions for future directions of fundamental and applied research on the topic.
