Pseudocapacitance: From Fundamental Understanding to High Power Energy Storage Materials

Cation-induced Ti3C2Tx MXene@melamine sponge aerogels with large layer spacing and high strength for high-performance supercapacitors

The self-assembled aerogels are considered as an efficient strategy to address the aggregation and restacking of Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets for high-performance supercapacitors. However, the low mechanical strength of the MXene aerogel results in the structural collapse of the self-standing supercapacitor electrode materials. Herein, a low-cost melamine sponge (MS) absorbed different cations (H+, K+, Mg2+, Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+ and Al3+), serves as a carrier and crosslinker for loading MXene hydrogel induced by the absorbed cations on the skeleton surface and the pores of MS, resulting in the high loading mass MXene aerogels with high mechanical strength. The experimental results show that the Mg-Ti3C2Tx@MS aerogel exhibits the maximum area capacitance of 702.22 mF cm-2 at 3 mA cm-2, and the area capacitance is still 603.12 mF cm-2 even at 100 mA cm-2, indicating the high rate capability with a capacitance retention of 85.89 %. It is worth noting that the constructed asymmetric supercapacitor with activated carbon achieves high energy densities of 104.53 μWh cm-2 and 93.87 μWh cm-2 at 800 μW cm-2 and 7999 μW cm-2, respectively. Furthermore, the asymmetric supercapacitor shows the high cycling stability with 90.2 % capacity retention after 10,000 cycles. This work provides a feasible strategy to prepare Ti3C2Tx MXene aerogels with large layer spacing and high strength for high-performance supercapacitors.

Self-reporting electroswitchable colorimetric platform for smart ammonium recovery from wastewater

Recovery of ammonium from wastewater represents a sustainable strategy within the context of global resource depletion, environmental pollution and carbon neutralization. The present study developed an advanced self-reporting electroswitchable colorimetric platform (SECP) to realize smart ammonium recovery based on the electrically stimulated transformation of Prussian blue/Prussian white (PB/PW) redox couple. The key to SECP was the selectivity of ammonium adsorption, sensitivity of desorption to electric signals and visualability of color change during switchable adsorption/desorption transformation. The results demonstrated the electrochemical intercalation-induced selective adsorption of NH4+ (selectivity coefficient of 3-19 versus other cations) and deintercalation-induced desorption on the PB-film electrode. At applied voltage of 1.2 V for 20 min, the negatively charged PB-film electrode achieved the maximum adsorption capacity of 3.2 mmol g-1. Reversing voltage to -0.2 V for 20 min resulted in desorption efficiency as high as 99%, indicating high adsorption/desorption reversibility and cyclic stability. The Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox dynamics were responsible for PB/PW transformation during reversible intercalation/deintercalation of NH4+. Based on the blue/transparence color change of PB/PW, the quantitative relationship was established between amounts of NH4+ adsorbed and extracted RGB values by multiple linear regression (R2 = 0.986, RMSE = 0.095). Then, the SECP was created upon the unique capability of real-time monitoring and feedback of color change of electrode to realize the automatic control of NH4+ adsorption/desorption. During five cycles of tests, the adsorption process consistently peaked at an average value of 3.15±0.04 mmol g-1, while desorption reliably approached the near-zero average of 0.06±0.04 mmol g-1. The average time of duration was 19.6±1.67 min for adsorption and 18.8±1.10 min for desorption, respectively. With electroswitchability, selectivity and self-reporting functionalities, the SECP represents a paradigm shift in smart ammonium recovery from wastewater, making wastewater treatment and resource recovery more efficient, more intelligent and more sustainable.

High Capacitance Porous Ruthenium Nitride Films with High Rate Capability for Micro-Supercapacitors

The demand for high-performance energy storage devices to power Internet of Things applications has driven intensive research on micro-supercapacitors (MSCs). In this study, RuN films made by magnetron sputtering as an efficient electrode material for MSCs are investigated. The sputtering parameters are carefully studied in order to maximize film porosity while maintaining high electrical conductivity, enabling a fast charging process. Using a combination of advanced techniques, the relationships among the morphology, structure, and electrochemical properties of the RuN films are investigated. The films are shown to have a complex structure containing a mixture of crystallized Ru and RuN phases with an amorphous oxide layer. The combination of high electrical conductivity and pseudocapacitive charge storage properties enabled a 16 µm-thick RuN film to achieve a capacitance value of 0.8 F cm-2 in 1 m KOH with ultra-high rate capability.

Reactive P and S co-doped porous hollow nanotube arrays for high performance chloride ion storage

Developing stable, high-performance chloride-ion storage electrodes is essential for energy storage and water purification application. Herein, a P, S co-doped porous hollow nanotube array, with a free ion diffusion pathway and highly active adsorption sites, on carbon felt electrodes (CoNiPS@CF) is reported. Due to the porous hollow nanotube structure and synergistic effect of P, S co-doped, the CoNiPS@CF based capacitive deionization (CDI) system exhibits high desalination capacity (76.1 mgCl- g-1), fast desalination rate (6.33 mgCl- g-1 min-1) and good cycling stability (capacity retention rate of > 90%), which compares favorably to the state-of-the-art electrodes. The porous hollow nanotube structure enables fast ion diffusion kinetics due to the swift ion transport inside the electrode and the presence of a large number of reactive sites. The introduction of S element also reduces the passivation layer on the surface of CoNiP and lowers the adsorption energy for Cl- capture, thereby improving the electrode conductivity and surface electrochemical activity, and further accelerating the adsorption kinetics. Our results offer a powerful strategy to improve the reactivity and stability of transition metal phosphides for chloride capture, and to improve the efficiency of electrochemical dechlorination technologies.

CoS2/carbon network flexible film with Co-N bond/π-π interaction enables superior mechanical properties and high-rate sodium ion storage

Flexible electrodes based on conversion-type materials have potential applications in low-cost and high-performance flexible sodium-ion batteries (FSIBs), owing to their high theoretical capacity and appropriate sodiation potential. However, they suffer from flexible electrodes with poor mechanical properties and sluggish reaction kinetics. In this study, freestanding CoS2 nanoparticles coupled with graphene oxides and carbon nanotubes (CoS2/GO/CNTs) flexible films with robust and interconnected architectures were successfully synthesized. CoS2/GO/CNTs flexible film displays high electronic conductivity and superior mechanical properties (average tensile strength of 21.27 MPa and average toughness of 393.18 KJ m-3) owing to the defect bridge for electron transfer and the formation of the π-π interactions between CNTs and GO. In addition, the close contact between the CoS2 nanoparticles and carbon networks enabled by the Co-N chemical bond prevents the self-aggregation of the CoS2 nanoparticles. As a result, the CoS2/GO/CNTs flexible film delivered superior rate capability (213.5 mAh g-1 at 6 A g-1, better than most reported flexible anode) and long-term cycling stability. Moreover, the conversion reaction that occurred in the CoS2/GO/CNTs flexible film exhibited pseudocapacitive behavior. This study provides meaningful insights into the development of flexible electrodes with superior mechanical properties and electrochemical performance for energy storage.

Electrochemically-driven actuators: from materials to mechanisms and from performance to applications

Soft actuators, pivotal for converting external energy into mechanical motion, have become increasingly vital in a wide range of applications, from the subtle engineering of soft robotics to the demanding environments of aerospace exploration. Among these, electrochemically-driven actuators (EC actuators), are particularly distinguished by their operation through ion diffusion or intercalation-induced volume changes. These actuators feature notable advantages, including precise deformation control under electrical stimuli, freedom from Carnot efficiency limitations, and the ability to maintain their actuated state with minimal energy use, akin to the latching state in skeletal muscles. This review extensively examines EC actuators, emphasizing their classification based on diverse material types, driving mechanisms, actuator configurations, and potential applications. It aims to illuminate the complicated driving mechanisms of different categories, uncover their underlying connections, and reveal the interdependencies among materials, mechanisms, and performances. We conduct an in-depth analysis of both conventional and emerging EC actuator materials, casting a forward-looking lens on their trajectories and pinpointing areas ready for innovation and performance enhancement strategies. We also navigate through the challenges and opportunities within the field, including optimizing current materials, exploring new materials, and scaling up production processes. Overall, this review aims to provide a scientifically robust narrative that captures the current state of EC actuators and sets a trajectory for future innovation in this rapidly advancing field.

Renewable biomass reinvigorates sustainable water-energy nexus

The water-energy nexus has garnered worldwide interest. Current dual-functional research aimed at co-producing freshwater and electricity faces significant challenges, including sub-optimal capacities ("1 + 1 < 2"), poor inter-functional coordination, high carbon footprints, and large costs. Mainstream water-to-electricity conversions are often compromised owing to functionality separation and erratic gradients. Herein, we present a sustainable strategy based on renewable biomass that addresses these issues by jointly achieving competitive solar-evaporative desalination and robust clean electricity generation. Using hydrothermally activated basswood, our solar desalination exceeded the 100% efficiency bottleneck even under reduced solar illumination. Through simple size-tuning, we achieved a high evaporation rate of 3.56 kg h-1 m-2 and an efficiency of 149.1%, representing 128%-251% of recent values without sophisticated surface engineering. By incorporating an electron-ion nexus with interfacial Faradaic electron circulation and co-ion-predominated micro-tunnel hydrodynamic flow, we leveraged free energy from evaporation to generate long-term electricity (0.38 W m-3 for over 14d), approximately 322% of peer performance levels. This inter-functional nexus strengthened dual functionalities and validated general engineering practices. Our presented strategy holds significant promise for global human-society-environment sustainability.

A Cross-linked n-Type Conjugated Polymer with Polar Side Chains Enables Ultrafast Pseudocapacitive Energy Storage

Pseudocapacitors bridge the performance gap between batteries and electric double-layer capacitors by storing energy via a combination of fast surface/near-surface Faradaic redox processes and electrical double-layer capacitance. Organic semiconductors are an emerging class of pseudocapacitive materials that benefit from facile synthetic tunability and mixed ionic-electronic conduction. Reported examples are mostly limited to p-type (electron-donating) conjugated polymers, while n-type (electron-accepting) examples remain comparatively underexplored. This work introduces a new cross-linked n-type conjugated polymer, spiro-NDI-N, strategically designed with polar tertiary amine side chains. This molecular design aims to synergistically increase the electroactive surface area and boost ion transport for efficient ionic-electronic coupling. Spiro-NDI-N demonstrates excellent pseudocapacitive energy storage performance in pH-neutral aqueous electrolytes, with specific capacitance values of up to 532 F g-1 at 5 A g-1 and stable cycling over 5000 cycles. Moreover, it maintains a rate capability of 307 F g-1 at 350 A g-1. The superior pseudocapacitive performance of spiro-NDI-N, compared to strategically designed structural analogues lacking either the cross-linked backbone or polar side chains, validates the essential role of its molecular design elements. More broadly, the design and performance of spiro-NDI-N provide a novel strategy for developing high-performance organic pseudocapacitors.

Two-Dimensional MoS2 Nanosheets Derived from Cathodic Exfoliation for Lithium Storage Applications

The preparation of 2H-phase MoS2 thin nanosheets by electrochemical delamination remains a challenge, despite numerous efforts in this direction. In this work, by choosing appropriate intercalating cations for cathodic delamination, the insertion process was facilitated, leading to a higher degree of exfoliation while maintaining the original 2H-phase of the starting bulk MoS2 material. Specifically, trimethylalkylammonium cations were tested as electrolytes, outperforming their bulkier tetraalkylammonium counterparts, which have been the focus of past studies. The performance of novel electrochemically derived 2H-phase MoS2 nanosheets as electrode material for electrochemical energy storage in lithium-ion batteries was investigated. The lower thickness and thus higher flexibility of cathodically exfoliated MoS2 promoted better electrochemical performance compared to liquid-phase and ultrasonically assisted exfoliated MoS2, both in terms of capacity (447 vs. 371 mA·h·g-1 at 0.2 A·g-1) and rate capability (30% vs. 8% capacity retained when the current density was increased from 0.2 A·g-1 to 5 A·g-1), as well as cycle life (44% vs. 17% capacity retention at 0.2 A·g-1 after 580 cycles). Overall, the present work provides a convenient route for obtaining MoS2 thin nanosheets for their advantageous use as anode material for lithium storage.

Polyaniline/Tungsten Trioxide Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Anode for Aqueous Proton Batteries

Aqueous proton batteries have received increasing attention due to their outstanding rate performance, stability and high capacity. However, the selection of anode materials in strongly acidic electrolytes poses a challenge in achieving high-performance aqueous proton batteries. This study optimized the proton reaction kinetics of layered metal oxide WO3 by introducing interlayer structural water and coating polyaniline (PANI) on its surface to prepare organic-inorganic hybrid material (WO3 ⋅ 2H2O@PANI). We constructed an aqueous proton battery with WO3 ⋅ 2H2O@PANI anode and MnO2@GF cathode. After 1500 cycles at a current density of 10 A g-1, the capacity retention rate can still reach 80.2 %. These results can inspire the development of new aqueous proton batteries.

Interlayer Structure Manipulation of FeOCl/MXene with Soft/Hard Interface Design for Safe Water Production Using Dechlorination Battery Deionization

Suffering from the susceptibility to decomposition, the potential electrochemical application of FeOCl has greatly been hindered. The rational design of the soft-hard material interface can effectively address the challenge of stress concentration and thus decomposition that may occur in the electrodes during charging and discharging. Herein, interlayer structure manipulation of FeOCl/MXene using soft-hard interface design method were conducted for electrochemical dechlorination. FeOCl was encapsulated in Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets by electrostatic self-assembly layer by layer to form a soft-hard mechanical hierarchical structure, in which Ti3C2Tx was used as flexible buffer layers to relieve the huge volume change of FeOCl during Cl- intercalation/deintercalation and constructed a conductive network for fast charge transfer. The CDI dechlorination system of FeOCl/Ti3C2Tx delivered outstanding Cl- adsorption capacity (158.47 ± 6.98 mg g-1), rate (6.07 ± 0.35 mg g-1 min-1), and stability (over 94.49 % in 30 cycles), and achieved considerable energy recovery (21.14 ± 0.25 %). The superior dechlorination performance was proved to originate from the Fe2+/Fe3+ topochemical transformation and the deformation constraint effect of Ti3C2Tx on FeOCl. Our interfacial design strategy enables a hard-to-soft integration capacity, which can serve as a universal technology for solving the traditional problem of electrode volume expansion.

Investigations on Tunnel-Structure MnO2 for Utilization as a High-Voltage and Long-Life Cathode Material in Aqueous Ammonium-Ion and Hybrid-Ion Batteries

Recently, nonmetal NH4 + ions have attracted extensive attention for use as charge carries in the field of energy storage due to their abundant resources, environmental friendliness, and low cost. However, the development of aqueous ammonium-ion batteries (AAIBs) is constrained by the absence of high-voltage and long-life materials. Herein, different tunnel-structure MnO2 materials (α-, β-, and γ-MnO2) are utilized as cathodes for AAIBs and hybrid-ion batteries and compared, and α-MnO2 is demonstrated to exhibit the most remarkable electrochemical performance. The α-MnO2 cathode material delivers the highest discharge capacity of 219 mAh g-1 at a current density of 0.1 A g-1 and the best cyclability with a capacity retention of 95.4% after 10 000 cycles at 1.0 A g-1. Moreover, aqueous ammonium-ion and hybrid-ion (ammonium/sodium ions) full batteries are successfully constructed using α-MnO2 cathodes. This work provides a novel direction for the development of aqueous energy storage for practical applications.

Aliovalent Substitution Tunes Physical Properties in a Conductive Bis(dithiolene) Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Framework

Two-dimensional conductive metal-organic frameworks have emerged as promising electronic materials for applications in (opto)electronic, thermoelectric, magnetic, electrocatalytic, and energy storage devices. Many bottom-up or postsynthetic protocols have been developed to isolate these materials or further modulate their electronic properties. However, some methodologies commonly used in classic semiconductors, notably, aliovalent substitution, are conspicuously absent. Here, we demonstrate how aliovalent Fe(III) to Ni(II) substitution enables the isolation of a Ni bis(dithiolene) material from a previously reported Fe analogue. Detailed characterization supports the idea that aliovalent substitution of Fe(III) to Ni(II) results in an in situ oxidation of the organic dithiolene linker. This substitution-induced redox tuning modulates the electronic properties in the system, leading to higher electrical conductivity and Hall mobility but slightly lower carrier densities and weaker antiferromagnetic interactions. Moreover, this aliovalent substitution improves the material's electrochemical stability and thus enables pseudocapacitive behavior in the Ni material. These results demonstrate how classic aliovalent substitution strategies in semiconductors can also be leveraged in conductive MOFs and add further support to this class of compounds as emerging electronic materials.

Nanofeather ruthenium nitride electrodes for electrochemical capacitors

Fast charging is a critical concern for the next generation of electrochemical energy storage devices, driving extensive research on new electrode materials for electrochemical capacitors and micro-supercapacitors. Here we introduce a significant advance in producing thick ruthenium nitride pseudocapacitive films fabricated using a sputter deposition method. These films deliver over 0.8 F cm-2 (~500 F cm-3) with a time constant below 6 s. By utilizing an original electrochemical oxidation process, the volumetric capacitance doubles (1,200 F cm-3) without sacrificing cycling stability. This enables an extended operating potential window up to 0.85 V versus Hg/HgO, resulting in a boost to 3.2 F cm-2 (3,200 F cm-3). Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy analyses reveal novel insights into the electrochemical oxidation process. The charge storage mechanism takes advantage of the high electrical conductivity and the morphology of cubic ruthenium nitride and Ru phases in the feather-like core, leading to high electrical conductivity in combination with high capacity. Accordingly, we have developed an analysis that relates capacity to time constant as a means of identifying materials capable of retaining high capacity at high charge/discharge rates.

Pseudocapacitive Storage in Molybdenum Oxynitride Nanostructures Reactively Sputtered on Stainless-Steel Mesh Towards an All-Solid-State Flexible Supercapacitor

Exploiting pseudocapacitance in rationally engineered nanomaterials offers greater energy storage capacities at faster rates. The present research reports a high-performance Molybdenum Oxynitride (MoON) nanostructured material deposited directly over stainless-steel mesh (SSM) via reactive magnetron sputtering technique for flexible symmetric supercapacitor (FSSC) application. The MoON/SSM flexible electrode manifests remarkable Na+-ion pseudocapacitive kinetics, delivering exceptional ≈881.83 F g-1 capacitance, thanks to the synergistically coupled interfaces and junctions between nanostructures of Mo2N, MoO2, and MoO3 co-existing phases, resulting in enhanced specific surface area, increased electroactive sites, improved ionic and electronic conductivity. Employing 3D Bode plots, b-value, and Dunn's analysis, a comprehensive insight into the charge-storage mechanism has been presented, revealing the superiority of surface-controlled capacitive and pseudocapacitive kinetics. Utilizing PVA-Na2SO4 gel electrolyte, the assembled all-solid-state FSSC (MoON/SSM||MoON/SSM) exhibits impressive cell capacitance of 30.7 mF cm-2 (438.59 F g-1) at 0.125 mA cm-2. Moreover, the FSSC device outputs a superior energy density of 4.26 µWh cm-2 (60.92 Wh kg-1) and high power density of 2.5 mW cm-2 (35.71 kW kg-1). The device manifests remarkable flexibility and excellent electrochemical cyclability of ≈91.94% over 10,000 continuous charge-discharge cycles. These intriguing pseudocapacitive performances combined with lightweight, cost-effective, industry-feasible, and environmentally sustainable attributes make the present MoON-based FSSC a potential candidate for energy-storage applications in flexible electronics.

Photoelectrochemical Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer of TiO2 Thin Films on Silicon

TiO2 thin films are often used as protective layers on semiconductors for applications in photovoltaics, molecule-semiconductor hybrid photoelectrodes, and more. Experiments reported here show that TiO2 thin films on silicon are electrochemically and photoelectrochemically reduced in buffered acetonitrile at potentials relevant to photoelectrocatalysis of CO2 reduction, N2 reduction, and H2 evolution. On both n-type Si and irradiated p-type Si, TiO2 reduction is proton-coupled with a 1e-:1H+ stoichiometry, as demonstrated by the Nernstian dependence of the Ti4+/3+ E1/2 on the buffer pKa. Experiments were conducted with and without illumination, and a photovoltage of ∼0.6 V was observed across 20 orders of magnitude in proton activity. The 4 nm films are almost stoichiometrically reduced under mild conditions. The reduced films catalytically transfer protons and electrons to hydrogen atom acceptors, based on cyclic voltammogram, bulk electrolysis, and other mechanistic evidence. TiO2/Si thus has the potential to photoelectrochemically generate high-energy H atom carriers. Characterization of the TiO2 films after reduction reveals restructuring with the formation of islands, rendering TiO2 films as a potentially poor choice as protecting films or catalyst supports under reducing and protic conditions. Overall, this work demonstrates that atomic layer deposition TiO2 films on silicon photoelectrodes undergo both chemical and morphological changes upon application of potentials only modestly negative of RHE in these media. While the results should serve as a cautionary tale for researchers aiming to immobilize molecular monolayers on "protective" metal oxides, the robust proton-coupled electron transfer reactivity of the films introduces opportunities for the photoelectrochemical generation of reactive charge-carrying mediators.

Electrochemical Doping Effect on the Conductivity of Melanin-Inspired Materials

Eumelanin is a natural pigment that can be particularly valuable for sustainable bioelectronic devices due to its inherent biocompatibility and hydration-dependent conductivity. However, the low conductivity of eumelanin limits its technological development. In this research, electrochemical doping was proposed as an alternative route to increase the electronic conductivity of synthetic eumelanin derivatives. Thin films of sulfonated eumelanin were deposited on platinum interdigitated electrodes and electrochemically treated by using cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry treatments. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis confirmed ion doping in sulfonated melanin. Current-voltage, current-time, and electrochemical impedance measurements were used to investigate the effect of different aqueous electrolytes (including KCl and LiClO4) treatments on the charge transport of sulfonated eumelanin. We show that the conductivity depends on the type and size of the anion used and can reach 10-3 S·cm-1. Additionally, depending on the electrolyte, there is a change in charge transport from mixed ionic/electronic to a predominantly electronic-only conduction. Our results show that the chemical nature of the ion plays an important role in the electrochemical doping and, consequently, in the charge transport of eumelanin. These insights serve as inspiration to explore the use of alternative electrolytes with different compositions further and develop eumelanin-based devices with tunable conductivities.

Enhancing supercapacitor electrochemical performance through acetate-ion intercalation in layered nickel-cobalt double hydroxides

Enhancing the performance of layered nickel-cobalt double hydroxides (NiCo-LDH) as electrode materials for supercapacitors represents a promising strategy for optimizing energy storage systems. However, the complexity of the preparation method for electrode materials with enhanced electrochemical performance and the inherent defects of nickel-cobalt LDH remain formidable challenges. In this study, we synthesized acetate-ion-intercalated NiCo-LDH (NCLA) through a simple one-step hydrothermal method. The physical and chemical structural properties and supercapacitor characteristics of the as-prepared NCLA were systematically characterized. The results indicated that the introduction of Ac- engendered a distinctive tetragonal crystal structure in NiCo-LDH, concomitant with a reduced interlayer spacing, thus enhancing structural stability. Electrochemical measurements revealed that NCLA-8 exhibited a specific capacitance of 1032.2 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1 and a high specific capacitance of 922 F g-1 at 10 A g-1, demonstrating a rate performance of 89.3%. Furthermore, NCLA-8 was used to construct the positive electrode of an asymmetric supercapacitor, while the negative electrode was composed of activated carbon. This configuration resulted in an energy density of 67.7 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 800 W kg-1. Remarkably, the asymmetric supercapacitor retained 82.8% of its initial capacitance following 3000 charge-discharge cycles at a current density of 10 A g-1. Thus, this study demonstrates the efficacy of acetate-ion intercalation in enhancing the electrochemical performance of NiCo-LDH, establishing it as a viable electrode material for supercapacitors.

Large-Scale Production and Integrated Application of Micro-Supercapacitors

Micro-supercapacitors, emerging as promising micro-energy storage devices, have attracted significant attention due to their unique features. This comprehensive review focuses on two key aspects: the scalable fabrication of MSCs and their diverse applications. The review begins by elucidating the energy storage mechanisms and guiding principles for designing high-performance devices. It subsequently explores recent advancements in scalable fabrication techniques for electrode materials and micro-nano fabrication technologies for micro-devices. The discussion encompasses critical application domains, including multifunctional MSCs, energy storage integration, integrated power generation, and integrated applications. Despite notable progress, there are still some challenges such as large-scale production of electrode material, well-controlled fabrication technology, and scalable integrated manufacture. The summary concludes by emphasizing the need for future research to enhance micro-supercapacitor performance, reduce production costs, achieve large-scale production, and explore synergies with other energy storage technologies. This collective effort aims to propel MSCs from laboratory innovation to market viability, providing robust energy storage solutions for MEMS and portable electronics.

Enhancing Energy Storage Capacity of 3D Carbon Electrodes Using Soft Landing of Molecular Redox Mediators

The incorporation of redox-active species into the electric double layer is a powerful strategy for enhancing the energy density of supercapacitors. Polyoxometalates (POM) are a class of stable, redox-active species with multielectron activity, which is often used to tailor the properties of electrochemical interfaces. Traditional synthetic methods often result in interfaces containing a mixture of POM anions, unreactive counter ions, and neutral species. This leads to degradation in electrochemical performance due to aggregation and increased interfacial resistance. Another significant challenge is achieving the uniform and stable anchoring of POM anions on substrates to ensure the long-term stability of the electrochemical interface. These challenges are addressed by developing a mass spectrometry-based subambient deposition strategy for the selective deposition of POM anions onto engineered 3D porous carbon electrodes. Furthermore, positively charged functional groups are introduced on the electrode surface for efficient trapping of POM anions. This approach enables the deposition of purified POM anions uniformly through the pores of the 3D porous carbon electrode, resulting in unprecedented increase in the energy storage capacity of the electrodes. The study highlights the critical role of well-defined electrochemical interfaces in energy storage applications and offers a powerful method to achieve this through selective ion deposition.

Role of Electrolyte pH on Water Oxidation for Iridium Oxides

Understanding the effect of noncovalent interactions of intermediates at the polarized catalyst-electrolyte interface on water oxidation kinetics is key for designing more active and stable electrocatalysts. Here, we combine operando optical spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS) to probe the effect of noncovalent interactions on the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity of IrOx in acidic and alkaline electrolytes. Our results suggest that the active species for the OER (Ir4.x+-*O) binds much stronger in alkaline compared with acid at low coverage, while the repulsive interactions between these species are higher in alkaline electrolytes. These differences are attributed to the larger fraction of water within the cation hydration shell at the interface in alkaline electrolytes compared to acidic electrolytes, which can stabilize oxygenated intermediates and facilitate long-range interactions between them. Quantitative analysis of the state energetics shows that although the *O intermediates bind more strongly than optimal in alkaline electrolytes, the larger repulsive interaction between them results in a significant weakening of *O binding with increasing coverage, leading to similar energetics of active states in acid and alkaline at OER-relevant potentials. By directly probing the electrochemical interface with complementary spectroscopic techniques, our work goes beyond conventional computational descriptors of the OER activity to explain the experimentally observed OER kinetics of IrOx in acidic and alkaline electrolytes.

Role of Surface Terminations for Charge Storage of Ti3C2Tx MXene Electrodes in Aqueous Acidic Electrolyte

In this study, we used 2-Dimmensionnal Ti3C2 MXene as model materials to understand how the surface groups affect their electrochemical performance. By adjusting the nature of the surface terminations (Cl-, N/O-, and O-) of Ti3C2 MXene through a molten salt approach, we could change the spacing between MXene layers and the level of water confinement, resulting in significant modifications of the electrochemical performance in acidic electrolyte. Using a combination of techniques including in-operando X-ray diffraction and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) techniques, we found that the presence of confined water results in a drastic transition from an almost electrochemically inactive behavior for Cl-terminated Ti3C2 to an ideally fast pseudocapacitive signature for N,O-terminated Ti3C2 MXene. This experimental work not only demonstrates the strong connection between surface terminations and confined water but also reveals the importance of confined water on the charge storage mechanism and the reaction kinetics in MXene.

Flow electrode capacitive desalination of industrial RO reject

Flow electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) is a promising technology for efficiently treating industrial brine with high salt content. However, its desalination performance is currently limited by internal resistance. Achieving an effective FCDI system relies on active electrode materials with high conductivity. This study compares the desalination performances of the widely used flow electrode activated carbon (AC) with more conductive materials, reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and ZnO/rGO composite. Additionally, the lack of particle-to-particle contact in the flow electrode contributes to internal resistance and to address this, a cationic surface-active agent is introduced. This agent forms a stable dispersion, creating a space for enhanced mass loading of the active material. This modification enhances the conductive network and particle contact, reducing the diffusion path and promoting rapid ion transport. With a 5 wt% loading, ZnO/rGO achieved a 73% salt removal efficiency, surpassing AC at 63%. Furthermore, the surfactant-modified ZnO/rGO flow electrode with a 7 wt% loading demonstrated an 81% salt removal efficiency.

Machine Learning-Assisted Survey on Charge Storage of MXenes in Aqueous Electrolytes

Pseudocapacitance is capable of both high power and energy densities owing to its fast chemical adsorption with substantial charge transfer. 2D transition-metal carbides/nitrides (MXenes) are an emerging class of pseudocapacitive electrode materials. However, the factors that dominate the physical and chemical properties of MXenes are intercorrelated with each other, giving rise to challenges in the quantitative assessment of their discriminating importance. In this perspective, literature data on the specific capacitance of MXene electrodes in aqueous electrolytes is comprehensively surveyed and analyzed using machine-learning techniques. The specific capacitance of MXene electrodes shows strong dependency on their interlayer spacing, where confined H2O in the interlayer space should play a key role in the charge storage mechanism. The electrochemical behavior of MXene electrodes is overviewed based on atomistic insights obtained from data-driven approaches.

Developments in conducting polymer-, metal oxide-, and carbon nanotube-based composite electrode materials for supercapacitors: a review

Supercapacitors are the latest development in the field of energy storage devices (ESDs). A lot of research has been done in the last few decades to increase the performance of supercapacitors. The electrodes of supercapacitors are modified by composite materials based on conducting polymers, metal oxide nanoparticles, metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, MXenes, chalcogenides, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), etc. In comparison to rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors have advantages such as quick charging and high power density. This review is focused on the progress in the development of electrode materials for supercapacitors using composite materials based on conducting polymers, graphene, metal oxide nanoparticles/nanofibres, and CNTs. Moreover, we investigated different types of ESDs as well as their electrochemical energy storage mechanisms and kinetic aspects. We have also discussed the classification of different types of SCs; advantages and drawbacks of SCs and other ESDs; and the use of nanofibres, carbon, CNTs, graphene, metal oxide-nanofibres, and conducting polymers as electrode materials for SCs. Furthermore, modifications in the development of different types of SCs such as pseudo-capacitors, hybrid capacitors, and electrical double-layer capacitors are discussed in detail; both electrolyte-based and electrolyte-free supercapacitors are taken into consideration. This review will help in designing and fabricating high-performance supercapacitors with high energy density and power output, which will act as an alternative to Li-ion batteries in the future.

A Redox Mediator-Free Highly Selective and Sensitive Electrochemical Aptasensor for Patulin Mycotoxin Detection in Apple Juice Using Ni-NiO Pseudocapacitive Nanomaterials

Pseudocapacitive nanomaterials have recently gained significant attention in electrochemical biosensors due to their rapid response, long cycle life, high surface area, biomolecule compatibility, and superior energy storage capabilities. In our study, we introduce the potential of using Ni-NiO nanofilm's pseudocapacitive traits as transducer signals in electrochemical aptasensors. Capitalizing on the innate affinity between histidine and nickel, we immobilized histidine-tagged streptavidin (HTS) onto Ni-NiO-modified electrodes. Additionally, we employed a biolayer interferometry-based SELEX to generate biotinylated patulin aptamers. These aptamers, when placed on Ni-NiO-HTS surfaces, make a suitable biosensing platform for rapid patulin mycotoxin detection in apple juice using electrochemical amperometry in microseconds. The novelty lies in optimizing pseudocapacitive nanomaterials structurally and electrochemically, offering the potential for redox mediator-free electrochemical aptasensors. Proof-of-concept is conducted by applying this surface for the ultrasensitive detection of a model analyte, patulin mycotoxin. The aptamer-functionalized bioelectrode showed an excellent linear response (10-106 fg/mL) and an impressive detection limit (1.65 fg/mL, +3σ of blank signal). Furthermore, reproducibility tests yielded a low relative standard deviation of 0.51%, indicating the good performance of the developed biosensor. Real sample analysis in freshly prepared apple juice revealed no significant difference (P < 0.05) in current intensity between spiked and real samples. The sensor interface maintained excellent stability for up to 2 weeks (signal retention 96.45%). The excellent selectivity, stability, and sensitivity of the electrochemical aptasensor exemplify the potential for using nickel-based pseudocapacitive nanomaterials for a wide variety of electrochemical sensing applications.

Ni0.5Co0.5S nano-chains: a high-performing intercalating pseudocapacitive electrode in asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) mode for the development of large-scale energy storage devices

Grid-scale energy storage solutions are necessary for using renewable energy sources efficiently. A supercapattery (supercapacitor + battery) has recently been introduced as a new variety of hybrid devices that engage both capacitive and faradaic charge storage processes. Nano-chain architectures of Ni0.5Co0.5S electrode materials consisting of interconnected nano-spheres are rationally constructed by tailoring the surface structure. Nano-chains of the bimetallic sulfide Ni0.5Co0.5S are presented to have a superior charge storage capacity. The Ni0.5Co0.5S nano-chain electrode presents a capacitance of 2001.6 F g-1 at 1 mV s-1, with a specific capacity of 267 mA h g-1 (1920 F g-1) at 1 A g-1 in 4 M KOH aqueous electrolyte through the galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) method. The reason behind the high charge storage capacity of the materials is the predominant redox-mediated diffusion-controlled pseudocapacitive mechanism coupled with surface capacitance (electrosorption), as the surface (outer) and intercalative (inner) charges stored by the Ni0.5Co0.5S electrodes are close to 46.0% and 54.0%, respectively. Additionally, a Ni0.5Co0.5S//AC two electrode full cell operating in asymmetric supercapacitor cell (ASCs) mode in 4 M KOH electrolyte exhibits an impressive energy density equivalent to 257 W h kg-1 and a power density of 0.73 kW kg-1 at a current rate of 1 A g-1.

Pseudocapacitive Kinetics in Synergistically Coupled MoS2-Mo2N Nanowires with Enhanced Interfaces toward All-Solid-State Flexible Supercapacitors

Pseudocapacitive kinetics in rationally engineered nanostructures can deliver higher energy and power densities simultaneously. The present report reveals a high-performance all-solid-state flexible symmetric supercapacitor (FSSC) based on MoS2-Mo2N nanowires deposited directly on stainless steel mesh (MoS2-Mo2N/SSM) employing DC reactive magnetron co-sputtering technology. The abundance of synergistically coupled interfaces and junctions between MoS2 nanosheets and Mo2N nanostructures across the nanocomposite results in greater porosity, increased ionic conductivity, and superior electrical conductivity. Consequently, the FSSC device utilizing poly(vinyl alcohol)-sodium sulfate (PVA-Na2SO4) hydrogel electrolyte renders an outstanding cell capacitance of 252.09 F·g-1 (44.12 mF·cm-2) at 0.25 mA·cm-2 and high rate performance within a wide 1.3 V window. Dunn's and b-value analysis reveals significant energy storage by surface-controlled capacitive and pseudocapacitive mechanisms. Remarkably, the symmetric device boosts tremendous energy density ∼10.36 μWh·cm-2 (59.17 Wh·kg-1), superb power density ∼6.5 mW·cm-2 (37.14 kW·kg-1), ultrastable long cyclability (∼93.7% after 10,000 galvanostatic charge-discharge cycles), and impressive mechanical flexibility at 60°, 90°, and 120° bending angles.

Investigation of the driving voltage on the high performance flexible ATF-ECDs based on PET/ITO/NiOX/LiTaO3/WO3/ITO

High performance flexible all-thin-film electrochromic devices (ATF-ECDs) have been fabricated and systematically investigated by operating with different driving voltages during the electrochromic processes. The device structure (cross-section) and material properties of some main functional layers were presented and analysed. The electrochromic properties including kinetic and spectral tests were systematically investigated through combining chronoamperometry, cyclic voltammetry measurements and optical measurements. In addition, the open circuit memory measurement was also carried out. A much higher driving voltage might lead to a current leakage inside the device during coloring process. A proper driving voltage is needed for achieving high device performances. More details were widely described and deeply discussed.

Micron-Sized Cobalt Niobium Oxide with Multiscale Porous Sponge-Like Structure Boosting High-Rate and Long-Life Lithium Storage

Niobium-based oxides show great potential as intercalation-type anodes in lithium-ion batteries due to their relatively high theoretical specific capacity. Nevertheless, their electrochemical properties are unsatisfactorily restricted by the poor electronic conductivity. Here, micron-sized Co0.5Nb24.5O62 with multiscale sponge-like structure is synthesized and demonstrated to be a fast-charging anode material. It can deliver a remarkable capacity of 287 mA h g-1 with a safe average working potential of ≈1.55 V vs Li+/Li and a high initial Coulombic efficiency of 91.1% at 0.1C. Owing to the fast electronic/ionic transport derived from the multiscale porous sponge-like structure, Co0.5Nb24.5O62 exhibits a superior rate capability of 142 mA h g-1 even at 10C. In addition, its maximum volume change during the charge/discharge process is determined to be 9.18%, thus exhibiting excellent cycling stability with 75.3% capacity retention even after 3000 cycles at 10C. The LiFePO4//Co0.5Nb24.5O62 full cells also achieve good rate performance of 101 mA h g-1 at 10C, as well as an excellent cycling performance of 81% capacity retention after 1200 cycles at 5C, further proving the promising application prospect of Co0.5Nb24.5O62.

The influence of crystal structures on the performance of CoMoO4 battery-type supercapacitor electrodes

CoMoO4 is a promising battery-type supercapacitor electrode material that can offer relatively high storage capacity and cycle stability. In this work, we investigate the role of the crystalline phase of CoMoO4 in determining these performance parameters. The hydrate phase of CoMoO4 was synthesized on a nickel foam substrate via hydrothermal reaction with subsequent annealing under an inert atmosphere leading to the formation of the β-phase CoMoO4. Similar nanoplate morphologies were observed in all of the samples. The hydrate-phase CoMoO4 demonstrates larger specific capacity than the annealed β-phase CoMoO4. Besides, the samples synthesized at lower temperatures have better rate capability than the sample annealed at higher temperatures. However, the hydrate phase had worse long-term stability compared to the β-phase samples.

Microwave engineered NiZrO3@GNP as efficient electrode material for energy storage applications

Supercapacitors (SCs) have emerged as attractive energy storage devices due to their rapid charge/discharge rates, long cycle life, and high-power density. However, the development of innovative electrode materials to achieve high-performance remains crucial to meet future requirements in supercapacitor technology. In this work, we have explored the potential of a microwave-engineered NiZrO3@GNP composite as a promising electrode material for SCs. A microwave assisted hydrothermal approach was adopted for the fabrication of the NiZrO3@GNP nanocomposite. Structural and morphological investigations showed its structural richness and its chemical compositions. When applied as a SC electrode, this innovative combination exhibits battery-like behaviour with higher specific capacity (577.63 C g-1) with good cyclic stability, and good performance. We have assembled an asymmetric-type two-electrode SC device and analysed its electrochemical features. This NiZrO3@GNP device exhibits the specific capacity of 47 C g-1 with capacitance retention of 70% after 2000 charge-discharge cycles. Further research on optimizing the synthesis process and exploring different device configurations could pave the way for even higher-performance supercapacitors in the future.

Hollow Ni3S4@Co3S4 with core-satellite nanostructure derived from metal-organic framework (MOF)-on-MOF hybrids as an electrode material for supercapacitors

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have found wide applications in the field of supercapacitors due to their highly controllable porous structure, big specific surface area, and abundant chemical functional groups. MOF-on-MOF hybrids not only enhance the composition of MOFs (such as ligands and/or metal centers) but also provide greater structural diversity. By utilizing MOFs as precursors for preparing sulfides, the unique characteristics and inherent structure of MOFs are preserved but their conductivity and capacitance are enhanced. This study successfully synthesized hollow-structured Ni3S4@Co3S4 derived from an Ni-MOF@ZIF-67 hybrid structure, where the Ni-MOF serves as the core and ZIF-67 as the satellite. The Ni3S4@Co3S4 electrode demonstrated a specific capacity as high as 747.3 C g-1 at 1 A g-1, and it could still maintain 77% of its initial capacity at 10 A g-1. Furthermore, the assembled Ni3S4@Co3S4//AC hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) device achieved a maximum energy density of 30.8 W h kg-1 when the power density was 750 W kg-1. The device exhibited remarkable cycling durability, retaining 85.4% of its initial capacitance after 5000 cycles. Therefore, the derived functional materials based on MOF-on-MOF provide a more scalable and promising approach for the preparation of efficient electrode materials.

Redox-Active Phenanthrenequinone Molecules and Nitrogen-Doped Reduced Graphene Oxide as Active Material Composites for Supercapacitor Applications

Carbon-based supercapacitor electrodes are generally restricted in energy density, as they rely exclusively on electric double-layer capacitance (EDLC). The introduction of redox-active organic molecules to obtain pseudocapacitance is a promising route to develop electrode materials with improved energy densities. In this work, we develop a porous nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide and 9,10-phenanthrenequinone composite (N-HtrGO/PQ) via a facile one-step physical adsorption method. The electrochemical evaluation of N-HtrGO/PQ using cyclic voltammetry showed a high capacitance of 605 F g-1 in 1 M H2SO4 when the composite consisted of 30% 9,10-phenanthrenequinone and 70% N-HtrGO. The measured capacitance significantly exceeded pure N-HtrGO without the addition of redox-active molecules (257 F g-1). In addition to promising capacitance, the N-HtrGO/30PQ composite showed a capacitance retention of 94.9% following 20,000 charge/discharge cycles. Based on Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, we postulate that the strong π-π interaction between PQ molecules and the N-HtrGO substrate enhances the specific capacitance of the composite by shortening pathways for electron transfer while improving structural stability.

CoNiO2/Co3O4 Nanosheets on Boron Doped Diamond for Supercapacitor Electrodes

Developing novel supercapacitor electrodes with high energy density and good cycle stability has aroused great interest. Herein, the vertically aligned CoNiO2/Co3O4 nanosheet arrays anchored on boron doped diamond (BDD) films are designed and fabricated by a simple one-step electrodeposition method. The CoNiO2/Co3O4/BDD electrode possesses a large specific capacitance (214 mF cm-2) and a long-term capacitance retention (85.9% after 10,000 cycles), which is attributed to the unique two-dimensional nanosheet architecture, high conductivity of CoNiO2/Co3O4 and the wide potential window of diamond. Nanosheet materials with an ultrathin thickness can decrease the diffusion length of ions, increase the contact area with electrolyte, as well as improve active material utilization, which leads to an enhanced electrochemical performance. Additionally, CoNiO2/Co3O4/BDD is fabricated as the positive electrode with activated carbon as the negative electrode, this assembled asymmetric supercapacitor exhibits an energy density of 7.5 W h kg-1 at a power density of 330.5 W kg-1 and capacity retention rate of 97.4% after 10,000 cycles in 6 M KOH. This work would provide insights into the design of advanced electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors.

Kinetic-Thermodynamic Promotion Engineering toward High-Density Hierarchical and Zn-Doping Activity-Enhancing ZnNiO@CF for High-Capacity Desalination

Despite the promising potential of transition metal oxides (TMOs) as capacitive deionization (CDI) electrodes, the actual capacity of TMOs electrodes for sodium storage is significantly lower than the theoretical capacity, posing a major obstacle. Herein, we prepared the kinetically favorable ZnxNi1 - xO electrode in situ growth on carbon felt (ZnxNi1 - xO@CF) through constraining the rate of OH- generation in the hydrothermal method. ZnxNi1 - xO@CF exhibited a high-density hierarchical nanosheet structure with three-dimensional open pores, benefitting the ion transport/electron transfer. And tuning the moderate amount of redox-inert Zn-doping can enhance surface electroactive sites, actual activity of redox-active Ni species, and lower adsorption energy, promoting the adsorption kinetic and thermodynamic of the Zn0.2Ni0.8O@CF. Benefitting from the kinetic-thermodynamic facilitation mechanism, Zn0.2Ni0.8O@CF achieved ultrahigh desalination capacity (128.9 mgNaCl g-1), ultra-low energy consumption (0.164 kW h kgNaCl-1), high salt removal rate (1.21 mgNaCl g-1 min-1), and good cyclability. The thermodynamic facilitation and Na+ intercalation mechanism of Zn0.2Ni0.8O@CF are identified by the density functional theory calculations and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring, respectively. This research provides new insights into controlling electrochemically favorable morphology and demonstrates that Zn-doping, which is redox-inert, is essential for enhancing the electrochemical performance of CDI electrodes.

Cation desolvation-induced capacitance enhancement in reduced graphene oxide (rGO)

Understanding the local electrochemical processes is of key importance for efficient energy storage applications, including electrochemical double layer capacitors. In this work, we studied the charge storage mechanism of a model material - reduced graphene oxide (rGO) - in aqueous electrolyte using the combination of cavity micro-electrode, operando electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) and operando electrochemical dilatometry (ECD) tools. We evidence two regions with different charge storage mechanisms, depending on the cation-carbon interaction. Notably, under high cathodic polarization (region II), we report an important capacitance increase in Zn2+ containing electrolyte with minimum volume expansion, which is associated with Zn2+ desolvation resulting from strong electrostatic Zn2+-rGO interactions. These results highlight the significant role of ion-electrode interaction strength and cation desolvation in modulating the charging mechanisms, offering potential pathways for optimized capacitive energy storage. As a broader perspective, understanding confined electrochemical systems and the coupling between chemical, electrochemical and transport processes in confinement may open tremendous opportunities for energy, catalysis or water treatment applications in the future.

Unraveling the Role of Metal Vacancy Sites and Doped Nitrogen in Enhancing Pseudocapacitance Performance of Defective MXene

Nitrogen-doped titanium carbides (MXene) films exhibit extraordinary volumetric capacitance when high-concentration sulfuric acid electrolyte is utilized owing to the enhancement of pseudocapacitance. However, the energy storage mechanism of nitrogen-doped MXene is unclear due to the complex electrode structure and electrolyte ions' behavior. Here, based on pristine MXene (Ti3C2O2), three different MXene structures are constructed by introducing metal vacancy sites and doped nitrogen atoms, namely, defective MXene (Ti2.9C2O2), nitrogen-doped MXene (Ti3C2O1.9N0.1), and nitrogen-doped MXene with metal vacancy sites (Ti2.9C2O1.9N0.1). Then, the density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations coupled with the effective screening medium reference interaction site method (ESM-RISM) are applied to reveal the electrochemical behavior at the electrode/electrolyte interfacial area. Through analyzing the electronic structure, electrical double-layer capacitance (EDLC), and equilibrium potential of the pseudocapacitance reaction, the specific effect of structural changes on their performance can be clarified: metal vacancy sites can reduce the potential difference of gap layer (Outer Helmholtz plane) at charged state and increase the electronic capacity of Ti, which can be used to explain the high pseudocapacitance, low charge transfer resistance and high-rate capacity properties of nitrogen-doped MXene observed in experiments.

Hydrothermal synthesis of NiO nanoparticles decorated hierarchical MnO2 nanowire for supercapacitor electrode with improved electrochemical performance

In this work, MnO2/NiO nanocomposite electrode materials have been synthesized by a cost-effective hydrothermal method. The effect of the concentrations (0, 1, 3, 5, and 7 wt%) of NiO nanoparticles on the surface morphology, structural properties, and electrochemical performance of the nanocomposites was characterized by different characterization techniques. The scanning electron micrographs (SEM) reveal that the as-prepared NiO nanoparticles are well connected and stuck with the MnO2 nanowires. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis showed an increase in the interplanar spacing due to the incorporation of NiO nanoparticles. The different structural parameters of MnO2/NiO nanocomposites were also found to vary with the concentration of NiO. The MnO2/NiO nanocomposites provide an improved electrochemical performance together with a specific capacitance as high as 343 F/g at 1.25 A/g current density. The electrochemical spectroscopic analysis revealed a reduction in charge transfer resistance due to the introduction of NiO, indicating a rapid carrier transportation between the materials interface. The improved electrochemical performance of MnO2/NiO can be attributed to good interfacial interaction, a large interlayer distance, and low charge transfer resistance. The unique features of MnO2/NiO and the cost-effective hydrothermal method will open up a new route for the fabrication of a promising supercapacitor electrode.

High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries with High Stability Derived from Titanium-Oxide- and Sulfur-Loaded Carbon Spherogels

This study presents a novel approach to developing high-performance lithium-ion battery electrodes by loading titania-carbon hybrid spherogels with sulfur. The resulting hybrid materials combine high charge storage capacity, electrical conductivity, and core-shell morphology, enabling the development of next-generation battery electrodes. We obtained homogeneous carbon spheres caging crystalline titania particles and sulfur using a template-assisted sol-gel route and carefully treated the titania-loaded carbon spherogels with hydrogen sulfide. The carbon shells maintain their microporous hollow sphere morphology, allowing for efficient sulfur deposition while protecting the titania crystals. By adjusting the sulfur impregnation of the carbon sphere and varying the titania loading, we achieved excellent lithium storage properties by successfully cycling encapsulated sulfur in the sphere while benefiting from the lithiation of titania particles. Without adding a conductive component, the optimized material provided after 150 cycles at a specific current of 250 mA g-1 a specific capacity of 825 mAh g-1 with a Coulombic efficiency of 98%.

One-Pot Facile Synthesis of a Cluster of ZnS Low-Dimensional Nanoparticles for High-Performance Supercapacitor Electrodes

To maximize the use of ZnS low-dimensional nanoparticles as high-performance supercapacitor electrodes, this work describes a simple one-pot synthesis method for producing a cluster of these particles. The ZnS nanoparticles fabricated in this work exhibit a cluster with unique low-dimensional (0D, 1D, and 2D) characteristics. Structural, morphological, and electrochemical investigations are all part of the thorough characterization of the produced materials. An X-ray diffraction pattern of clustered ZnS nanoparticles reflects the phase formation with highly stable cubic blende sphalerite polymorph. The confirmation of nanoparticle cluster formation featuring multiple low-dimensional nanostructures was achieved through field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), while the internal structure was assessed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Systematically assessing the ZnS nanoparticles' electrochemical performance reveals their prospective qualities as supercapacitor electrode materials. The electrode assembled with this material on Ni foam demonstrates elevated specific capacitance (areal capacitance) values, reaching 716.8 F.g⁻1 (2150.4 mF.cm-2) at a current density of 3 mA.cm⁻2. Moreover, it reflects 69.1% capacitance retention with a four times increase in current density, i.e., 495.5 F.g-1 (1486.56 mF.cm-2) capacitance was archived at 12 mA.cm-2 with 100% Coulombic efficiency. Furthermore, the electrode exhibits prolonged cycling capability with 77.7% capacitance retention, as evidenced by its charge-discharge measurements sustained over 15,000 cycles at a current density of 25 mA cm⁻2.

Substrate effect on charging of electrified graphene/water interfaces

Graphene, a transparent two-dimensional (2D) conductive electrode, has brought extensive new perspectives and prospects to electrochemical systems, such as chemical sensors, energy storage, and energy conversion devices. In many of these applications, graphene, supported on a substrate, is in contact with an aqueous solution. An increasing number of studies indicate that the substrate, rather than graphene, determines the organization of water in contact with graphene, i.e., the electric double layer (EDL) structure near the electrified graphene, and the wetting behavior of the graphene: the graphene sheet is transparent in terms of its supporting substrate. By applying surface-specific heterodyne-detected sum-frequency generation (HD-SFG) spectroscopy to the silicon dioxide (SiO2)-supported graphene electrode/aqueous electrolyte interface and comparing the data with those for the calcium fluoride (CaF2)-supported graphene [Y. Wang et al., Angew. Chem., Int. Ed., 2023, 62, e202216604], we discuss the impact of the different substrates on the charging of both the graphene and the substrate upon applying potentials. The SiO2-supported graphene shows pseudocapacitive behavior, consistent with the CaF2-supported graphene case, although the surface charges on SiO2 and CaF2 differ substantially. The SiO2 surface is already negatively charged at +0.57 V (vs. Pd/H2), and the negative surface charge is doubled when negative potentials are applied, in contrast with the CaF2 case, where the positive charge is reduced when negative potentials are applied. Interestingly, the charging of the graphene sheet is almost identical between the negatively charged SiO2 surface and positively charged CaF2 surface, demonstrating that the graphene charging is decoupled from the charging of the substrates.

Effect of annealing temperature on structural and electrochemical behaviour on MgFe2O4as electrode material in neutral aqueous electrolyte for supercapacitors

Binary metal oxides possess unique structures and multiple oxidation states, making them highly valuable in electrochemical analysis. This study aims to determine the effect of annealing temperature on the electrochemical properties of magnesium ferrite when used as an electrode material in a neutral aqueous electrolyte. We utilized the sol-gel technique to synthesize the material and annealed it at various temperatures. Our analysis of the material using different characterization techniques reveals significant changes in its structural and electrochemical properties. We found that the material exhibited a range of phases, and higher annealing temperatures led to improved electrochemical properties. The electrochemical measurements showed reversible and redox pseudo-capacitance behavior, with the material annealed at 500 °C exhibiting the highest specific capacitance of 117 F g-1at a current density of 0.5 A g-1. Capacitive and diffusion-controlled processes govern the total charge storage mechanism, and their contribution changes significantly as the annealing temperature varies. The capacitance retention of 500 °C annealed sample was 58% and it remained stable. This work establishes a correlation between annealing temperature on structural, morphological, and electrochemical behavior, thereby opening up avenues for tailoring them effectively. These findings can be useful in the development of future electrode materials for electrochemical applications.

Nanoarchitectonics of MXene Derived TiO2 /Graphene with Vertical Alignment for Achieving the Enhanced Supercapacitor Performance

Structural engineering and hybridization of heterogeneous 2D materials can be effective for advanced supercapacitor. Furthermore, architectural design of electrodes particularly with vertical construction of structurally anisotropic graphene nanosheets, can significantly enhance the electrochemical performance. Herein, MXene-derived TiO2 nanocomposites hybridized with vertical graphene is synthesized via CO2 laser irradiation on MXene/graphene oxide nanocomposite film. Instantaneous photon energy by laser irradiation enables the formation of vertical graphene structures on nanocomposite films, presenting the controlled anisotropy in free-standing film. This vertical structure enables improved supercapacitor performance by forming an open structure, increasing the electrolyte-electrode interface, and creating efficient electron transport path. In addition, the effective oxidation of MXene nanosheets by instantaneous photon energy leads to the formation of rutile TiO2 . TiO2 nanoparticles directly generated on graphene enables the effective current path, which compensates for the low conductivity of TiO2 and enables the functioning of an effective supercapacitor by utilizing its pseudocapacitive properties. The resulting film exhibits excellent specific areal capacitance of 662.9 mF cm-2 at a current density of 5 mA cm-2 . The film also shows superb cyclic stability during 40 000 repeating cycles, maintaining high capacitance. Also, the pseudocapacitive redox reaction kinetics is evaluated, showing fast redox kinetics with potential for high-performance supercapacitor applications.

Supercapacitors: An Efficient Way for Energy Storage Application

To date, batteries are the most widely used energy storage devices, fulfilling the requirements of different industrial and consumer applications. However, the efficient use of renewable energy sources and the emergence of wearable electronics has created the need for new requirements such as high-speed energy delivery, faster charge-discharge speeds, longer lifetimes, and reusability. This leads to the need for supercapacitors, which can be a good complement to batteries. However, one of their drawbacks is their lower energy storage capability, which has triggered worldwide research efforts to increase their energy density. With the introduction of novel nanostructured materials, hierarchical pore structures, hybrid devices combining these materials, and unconventional electrolytes, significant developments have been reported in the literature. This paper reviews the short history of the evolution of supercapacitors and the fundamental aspects of supercapacitors, positioning them among other energy-storage systems. The main electrochemical measurement methods used to characterize their energy storage features are discussed with a focus on their specific characteristics and limitations. High importance is given to the integral components of the supercapacitor cell, particularly to the electrode materials and the different types of electrolytes that determine the performance of the supercapacitor device (e.g., storage capability, power output, cycling stability). Current directions in the development of electrode materials, including carbonaceous forms, transition metal-based compounds, conducting polymers, and novel materials are discussed. The synergy between the electrode material and the current collector is a key factor, as well as the fine-tuning of the electrode material and electrolyte.

Hydronium Intercalation Enables High Rate in Hexagonal Molybdate Single Crystals

Rapid proton transport in solid-hosts promotes a new chemistry in achieving high-rate Faradaic electrodes. Exploring the possibility of hydronium intercalation is essential for advancing proton-based charge storage. Nevertheless, this is yet to be revealed. Herein, a new host is reported of hexagonal molybdates, (A2 O)x ·MoO3 ·(H2 O)y (A = Na+ , NH4 + ), and hydronium (de)intercalation is demonstrated with experiments. Hexagonal molybdates show a battery-type initial reduction followed by intercalation pseudocapacitance. Fast rate of 200 C (40 A g-1 ) and long lifespan of 30 000 cycles are achieved in electrodes of monocrystals even over 200 µm. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance confirms hydronium intercalations, and operando measurements using electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance and synchrotron X-ray diffraction disclose distinct intercalation behaviours in different electrolyte concentrations. Remarkably, characterizations of the cycled electrodes show nearly identical structures and suggest equilibrium products are minimally influenced by the extent of proton solvation. These results offer new insights into proton electrochemistry and will advance correlated high-power batteries and beyond.

Supramolecular Engineering of Ti3 C2 Tx MXene -Perylene Diimide Hybrid Electrodes for the Pseudocapacitive Electrochemical Storage of Calcium Ions

The rare combination of metallic conductivity and surface redox activity enables 2D MXenes as versatile charge storage hosts for the design of high-rate electrochemical energy storage devices. However, high charge density metal ions including but not limited to Ca+2 and Mg+2 pose challenges such as sluggish solid-state diffusion and also inhibiting the charge transfer across electrode-electrolyte interfaces. In this work, free-standing hybrid electrode architectures based on 2D titanium carbide-cationic perylene diimide (Ti3 C2 Tx @cPDI) via supramolecular self-assembly are developed. Secondary bonding interactions such as dipole-dipole and hydrogen bonding between Ti3 C2 Tx and cPDI are investigated by zeta potential and Fourier-transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy . Ti3 C2 Tx @cPDI free-standing electrodes show typical volumetric capacitance up to 260 F cm-3 in Mg2+ and Ca2+ aqueous electrolytes at charging times scales from 3 minutes to a few seconds. Three-dimensional (3D) Bode maps are constructed to understand the charge storage dynamics of Ti3 C2 Tx @cPDI hybrid electrode in an aqueous Ca-ion electrolyte. ,Pseudocapacitance is solely contributed by the nanoscale distribution of redox-active cPDI supramolecular polymers across 2D Ti3 C2 Tx . This study opens avenues for the design of a wide variety of MXene@redox active organic charge hosts for high-rate pseudocapacitive energy storage devices.

High-energy-density zinc ion capacitors based on 3D porous free-standing defect-reduced graphene oxide hydrogel cathodes

Zinc ion capacitors (ZICs) have shown potential for breaking the energy density ceiling of traditional supercapacitors (SCs) via appropriate device design. Nevertheless, a significant challenge remains in advancing ZIC positive electrode materials with excellent conductivity, high specific capacitance, and reliable cycle stability. A highly attractive option for carbon-based electrode materials is reduced graphene oxide (RGO) due to its vast specific surface area, prominent porosity, and 3D cross-linked frame. However, the tight stacking of RGO sheets driven by van der Waals forces can restrict active sites, decrease specific capacitance, and elevate electrochemical impedance. To overcome these challenges, 3D defective RGO (DRGO) hydrogels were prepared by a metal Co cocatalytic gasification reaction. This method produced mesoporous defects on the surface of RGO hydrogels via a low-temperature hydrothermal self-assembly strategy. The surface of the layer has a wide and uniform distribution, which can offer abundant redox active sites, rich ion transfer channels, and fast reaction kinetics. In this work, 3D DRGO//Zn exhibited a wide operating window (0-1.8 V), high specific capacitance (189.39 F g-1 at 1 A g-1), outstanding energy density (85.23 W h kg-1 at 960.31 W kg-1; 52.36 W h kg-1 at 17454.87 W kg-1), and persistent cycling life (98.86% initial capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles at 10 A g-1). This study emphasizes the device design of ZIC and promising prospects of using 3D DRGO hydrogel as a feasible positive electrode for ZIC.

One-Step Fabrication of Integrated Graphene/Polypyrrole/Carbon Cloth Films for Supercapacitor Electrodes

The facile and cost-effective preparation of supercapacitor electrodes is significant for the application of this kind of electrochemical energy-storing module. In this work, we designed a feasible strategy to fabricate a binary active material onto a current collector in one step. A colloidal mixture of graphene oxide and pyrrole layered on a carbon cloth could undergo a redox reaction through a mild hydrothermal process to yield a reduced graphene oxide/polypyrrole hydrogel film anchored onto the carbon cloth. The integrated electrode with the porous graphene/polypyrrole active material could be directly utilized as a freestanding working electrode for electrochemical measurements and the assembly of supercapacitor devices. The as-prepared electrode could achieve a high capacitance of 1221 mF cm-2 at 1 mA cm-2 (531 F g-1) with satisfactory cycling stability. The constructed symmetric supercapacitor with two optimal electrodes could provide an energy density of 70.4 μWh cm-2 (15.3 Wh kg-1). This work offers a feasible pathway toward the integration of graphene/conducting polymer composites as electrochemical electrodes.

Mechanisms of ion transport in lithium salt-doped zwitterionic polymer-supported ionic liquid electrolytes

Recent experimental results have demonstrated that zwitterionic ionogel comprised of polyzwitterion (polyZI)-supported lithium salt-doped ionic liquid exhibits improved conductivities and lithium transference numbers than the salt-doped base ionic liquid electrolyte (ILE). However, the underlying mechanisms of such observations remain unresolved. In this work, we pursued a systematic investigation to understand the impact of the polyZI content and salt concentration on the structural and dynamic properties of the poly(MPC) ionogel of our model polyZI ionogel, poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) [poly(MPC)] supported LiTFSI/N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium TFSI base ionic liquid electrolyte. Our structural analyses show strong lithium-ZI interaction consistent with the physical network characteristic observed in the experiments. An increase in polyZI content leads to an increased fraction of Li+ ions coordinated with the polyZI. In contrast, an increase in salt concentration leads to a decreased fraction of Li+ ions coordinated with the polyZI. The diffusivities of the mobile ions in the poly(MPC) ionogel were found to be lower than the base ILE in agreement with experiments at T > 300 K. Analysis of ion transport mechanisms shows that lithium ions within the poly(MPC) ionogel travel via a combination of structural, vehicular diffusion, as well as hopping mechanism. Finally, the conductivity trend crossover between the poly(MPC) ionogel and the base ILE was rationalized via a temperature study that showed that the base ILE ions are influenced more by the variation of temperature when compared to the poly(MPC) ions.
