Molecular Design of Luminescent Gold(III) Emitters as Thermally Evaporable and Solution-Processable Organic Light-Emitting Device (OLED) Materials

Gold Tripyrrindione: Redox Chemistry and Reactivity with Dichloromethane

The identification of ligands that stabilize Au(III) centers has led to the isolation of complexes for applications in catalysis, gold-based therapeutics, and functional materials. Herein, we report the coordination of gold by tripyrrin-1,14-dione, a linear tripyrrole with the scaffold of naturally occurring metabolites of porphyrin-based protein cofactors (e.g., heme). Tripyrrindione H3TD2 binds Au(III) as a trianionic tridentate ligand to form square planar complex [Au(TD2)(H2O)], which features an adventitious aqua ligand. Two reversible ligand-based oxidations of this complex allow access to the other known redox states of the tripyrrindione framework. Conversely, (spectro)electrochemical measurements and DFT analysis indicate that the reduction of the complex is likely metal-based. The chemical reduction of [Au(TD2)(H2O)] leads to a reactive species that utilizes dichloromethane in the formation of a cyclometalated organo-Au(III) complex. Both the aqua and the organometallic Au(III) complexes were characterized in the solid state by microcrystal electron diffraction (MicroED) methods, which were critical for the analysis of the microcrystalline sample of the organo-gold species. Overall, this study illustrates the synthesis of Au(III) tripyrrindione as well as its redox profile and reactivity leading to gold alkylation chemistry.

Shining New Light on Biological Systems: Luminescent Transition Metal Complexes for Bioimaging and Biosensing Applications

Luminescence imaging is a powerful and versatile technique for investigating cell physiology and pathology in living systems, making significant contributions to life science research and clinical diagnosis. In recent years, luminescent transition metal complexes have gained significant attention for diagnostic and therapeutic applications due to their unique photophysical and photochemical properties. In this Review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the recent development of luminescent transition metal complexes for bioimaging and biosensing applications, with a focus on transition metal centers with a d6, d8, and d10 electronic configuration. We elucidate the structure-property relationships of luminescent transition metal complexes, exploring how their structural characteristics can be manipulated to control their biological behavior such as cellular uptake, localization, biocompatibility, pharmacokinetics, and biodistribution. Furthermore, we introduce the various design strategies that leverage the interesting photophysical properties of luminescent transition metal complexes for a wide variety of biological applications, including autofluorescence-free imaging, multimodal imaging, organelle imaging, biological sensing, microenvironment monitoring, bioorthogonal labeling, bacterial imaging, and cell viability assessment. Finally, we provide insights into the challenges and perspectives of luminescent transition metal complexes for bioimaging and biosensing applications, as well as their use in disease diagnosis and treatment evaluation.

Achieving efficient and stable blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence organic light-emitting diodes based on four-coordinate fluoroboron emitters by simple substitution molecular engineering

Achieving both high efficiency and high stability in blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence organic light-emitting diodes (TADF-OLEDs) is challenging for practical displays and lighting. Here, we have successfully developed a series of sky-blue to pure-blue emitting donor-acceptor (D-A) type TADF materials featuring a four-coordinated boron with 2,2'-(pyridine-2,6-diyl)diphenolate (dppy) ligands, i.e.1-8. Synergistic engineering of substituents on the phenyl bridge as well as the electronic properties and the attached positions of heteroatom N-donors not only enables fine-tuning of the emission colors, but also modulates the nature and energies of their triplet excited states that are important for the reverse intersystem crossing (RISC). Particularly for the compound with two methyl substituents on the phenyl bridge (compound 8), RISC is significantly facilitated through the vibronic coupling of the energetically close-lying triplet charge transfer (3CT) and the triplet local excited (3LE) states, when compared to analogue 7. Efficient sky-blue to pure-blue OLEDs with electroluminescence peaks (λ EL) at 460-492 nm have been obtained, in which ca. five-fold higher external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of 18.9% have been demonstrated by 8 than that by 7. Moreover, ca. thirty times longer device operational half-lifetimes (LT50) of 9113 hours for 8 than that for 7 as well as satisfactory LT50 reaching 26 643 hours for 6 at an initial luminance of 100 cd m-2 have also been demonstrated. To the best of our knowledge, these results represent one of the best high-performance blue OLEDs based on tetracoordinated boron TADF emitters. Moreover, the design strategy presented here has provided an attractive strategy for enhancing the device performance of blue TADF-OLEDs.

Phosphorescent PdII-PdII Emitter-Based Red OLEDs with an EQEmax of 20.52

Three dinuclear Pd(II) complexes (1, 2, and 3) with intense red phosphorescence at room temperature are here synthesized using strong ligand field strength compounds. All three complexes are characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and elemental analyses. Complexes 2 and 3 are characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystalline data of 2 and 3 reveal complex double-layer structures, with Pd-Pd distances of 2.8690(9) Å and 2.8584(17) Å, respectively. Furthermore, complexes 1, 2, and 3 show phosphorescence at room temperature in their solid states at the wavelengths of 678, 601, and 672 nm, respectively. In addition, they show phosphorescence at 634, 635, and 582 nm, respectively, in the 2 wt.% (PMMA) films, and phosphorescence at 670, 675, and 589 nm, respectively, in the deoxygenated CH2Cl2 solutions. Among three complexes, complex 1 shows red emission at 634 nm with phosphorescent quantum yield Ф = 67% in the 2 wt.% PMMA film. Furthermore, complex 1-based organic light-emitting diode is fabricated using a vapor-phase deposition process, and their maximum external quantum efficiency reaches 20.52%, which is the highest percentage obtained by using the dinuclear Pd(II) complex triplet emitters with the CIE coordinates of (0.62, 0.38).

(P^N^C) Ligands to Stabilize Gold(III): A Straightforward Access to Hydroxo, Formate, and Hydride Complexes

A novel class of (P^N^C) pincer ligands capable of stabilizing elusive gold(III) species is reported here. Straightforward access to (P^N^C)gold(III) hydroxo, formate, and hydride complexes has been streamlined by first incorporating a cycloauration step devoid of toxic metals or harsh conditions. The resulting gold complexes exhibit remarkable stability in solution as well as in the solid state under ambient conditions, which enabled their characterization by X-ray diffraction analyses. Interestingly, the influence of the ligand allowed the preparation of gold(III)-hydrides using mild hydride donors such as H-Bpin, which contrasts with sensitive super hydrides or strong acids and cryogenic conditions employed in previous protocols. A detailed bonding characterization of these species is complemented by reactivity studies.

Gold(III), Mercury(II), and Palladium(II) Complexes of a Series of Isomeric Bis(mono- and dialkoxyphenyl)pyridines: Introduction of Gold through Transmetalation and Catalysis

A series of isomeric bis-2,6-(monoalkoxyphenyl)pyridine and bis-2,6-(dialkoxyphenyl)pyridine ligands were synthesized and characterized. In order to prepare their chlorogold(III) complexes, intermediate chloromercury(II) complexes were first prepared, but unlike observations from previous studies where they were obtained impure and at best in moderate yield, here pure complexes were synthesized, many in rather high yields. Depending on the substitution pattern of the alkoxy chains on the ligands, mono- and/or dimercurated complexes were obtained, characterized by 1H, 13C{1H}, and 199Hg NMR spectroscopy as well as, in several cases, by X-ray crystallography. Factors that may explain this unusual reactivity are discussed. In most cases, transmetalation to the related chlorogold(III) complex proceeded smoothly, although lower yields were obtained when starting from doubly mercurated precursors. Prompted by the propensity of these ligands to mercurate, attempts were made to effect direct auration, but none was successful. However, dimeric, orthometalated complexes of palladium(II) could be prepared and were also amenable to transmetalation to the chlorogold(III) complex, providing for a mercury-free synthesis.

Efficient red thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitters achieved through precise control of excited state energy levels

The variety of highly efficient red/near-infrared (NIR) materials with thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) feature is extremely limited so far, and it is necessary to expand the candidate pool of excellent red/deep-red emitters. However, how to control the energy level alignment of the 1CT (singlet charge transfer) state and the 3LE (triplet local excitation) state to improve the emission efficiency of materials remains a challenge. Herein, based on our previously reported green fluorescent material 67dTPA-FQ, three new donor-acceptor type TADF materials (TQ-oMeOTPA, TsQ-oMeOTPA and SQ-oMeOTPA) were designed by introducing 4,4'-dimethoxy triphenylamine (MeOTPA) as the donor, and introduced S atoms on the acceptors to enhance the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and CT effects. The theoretical calculations showed that the newly introduced MeOTPA and S atom successfully enhanced the CT effect of the materials, not only shifting the luminescence peak to the deep red region but also effectively adjusting the energy level alignment of the excited state, accelerating the reverse intersystem crossing process. Finally, the organic light-emitting diodes based on SQ-oMeOTPA exhibit an external quantum efficiency of 19.1%, with an emission peak at 619 nm. This work not only expands the candidate inventory of red TADF materials, but also proves the feasibility of designing emitters by adjusting the excited state energy levels, greatly broadening the diversity of TADF emitters in design, and providing a powerful means for rapidly screening efficient emitters in the future.

Deciphering Photoluminescence in an Aryl Iodides-Gold Nanoparticles System: Au-Mediated Homocoupling Reaction at a Low Temperature

The study of photoactive materials often unveils intriguing findings, showcasing the value of an interdisciplinary approach. We examined the purported metal-enhanced luminescence thought to result from the chemisorption of aryl iodides on poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone)-stabilized gold nanoparticles. Our discovery deviates from previous assumptions: the fluorescence observed does not originate from excimers of iodophenols chemisorbed on Au:PVP. Instead, it arises from biphenol products, resulting from a gold-mediated Ullmann homocoupling reaction that occurs within the system. Notably, this reaction, known for its demanding nature, proceeds in methanol under purely ambient conditions: room temperature and air atmosphere, without the need for a base. Therefore, these findings not only offer a complete understanding of the observed luminescence but also provide a substantial contribution to the field of carbon-carbon coupling reactions.

Iron(III) Carbene Complexes with Tunable Excited State Energies for Photoredox and Upconversion

Substituting precious elements in luminophores and photocatalysts by abundant first-row transition metals remains a significant challenge, and iron continues to be particularly attractive owing to its high natural abundance and low cost. Most iron complexes known to date face severe limitations due to undesirably efficient deactivation of luminescent and photoredox-active excited states. Two new iron(III) complexes with structurally simple chelate ligands enable straightforward tuning of ground and excited state properties, contrasting recent examples, in which chemical modification had a minor impact. Crude samples feature two luminescence bands strongly reminiscent of a recent iron(III) complex, in which this observation was attributed to dual luminescence, but in our case, there is clear-cut evidence that the higher-energy luminescence stems from an impurity and only the red photoluminescence from a doublet ligand-to-metal charge transfer (2LMCT) excited state is genuine. Photoinduced oxidative and reductive electron transfer reactions with methyl viologen and 10-methylphenothiazine occur with nearly diffusion-limited kinetics. Photocatalytic reactions not previously reported for this compound class, in particular the C-H arylation of diazonium salts and the aerobic hydroxylation of boronic acids, were achieved with low-energy red light excitation. Doublet-triplet energy transfer (DTET) from the luminescent 2LMCT state to an anthracene annihilator permits the proof of principle for triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion based on a molecular iron photosensitizer. These findings are relevant for the development of iron complexes featuring photophysical and photochemical properties competitive with noble-metal-based compounds.

Two-Coordinate Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Coinage Metal Complexes: Molecular Design, Photophysical Characters, and Device Application

Since the emergence of the first green light emission from a fluorescent thin-film organic light emitting diode (OLED) in the mid-1980s, a global consumer market for OLED displays has flourished over the past few decades. This growth can primarily be attributed to the development of noble metal phosphorescent emitters that facilitated remarkable gains in electrical conversion efficiency, a broadened color gamut, and vibrant image quality for OLED displays. Despite these achievements, the limited abundance of noble metals in the Earth's crust has spurred ongoing efforts to discover cost-effective electroluminescent materials. One particularly promising avenue is the exploration of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), a mechanism with the potential to fully harness excitons in OLEDs. Recently, investigations have unveiled TADF in a series of two-coordinate coinage metal (Cu, Ag, and Au) complexes. These organometallic TADF materials exhibit distinctive behavior in comparison to their organic counterparts. They offer benefits such as tunable emissive colors, short TADF emission lifetimes, high luminescent quantum yields, and reasonable stability. Impressively, both vacuum-deposited and solution-processed OLEDs incorporating these materials have achieved outstanding performance. This review encompasses various facets on two-coordinate TADF coinage metal complexes, including molecular design, photophysical characterizations, elucidation of structure-property relationships, and OLED applications.

Stimuli-responsive luminescence from polar cyano/isocyano-derived luminophores via structural tailoring and self-assembly

Polar cyano fragments and their isomeric isocyano counterparts have attracted great attention as stimuli-responsive luminescent materials in a wide range of fields including organic light-emitting diode devices, chemical fluorescent sensors, photoelectric semiconductors, anti-counterfeit products, etc., mainly because of their typical electron-deficient activity, noncovalent recognition ability, and variable coordination capacity. The electron-deficient and polar nature of these blocks have significant effects on the properties of the cyano/isocyano-based luminophore materials, especially concerning their condensed state-dependent electronic structures. Among them, donor-acceptor (D-A) derived unimolecular and co-assembled luminophores have attracted more attention because their large delocalized structures and noncovalent interaction recognition sites can rebuild the electronic transfer character in the aggregative state, thus endowing them with outstanding stimuli-responsive luminescent behavior via intermolecular and intramolecular charge transfer in polytropic morphologies. In this perspective paper, we give a brief introduction on stimuli-responsive organic and coordinated luminophores and the documented typical design concepts and applications in recent years. It is expected that this perspective article will not only summarize the recent developments of polar cyano/isocyano-derived luminophores and their coordination compounds via structural tailoring and self-assembly but also throw light on the future of the design of more sophisticated stimuli-responsive architectures and their versatile properties.

Regulating luminescence thermal enhancement in negative thermal expansion metal-organic frameworks

Overcoming thermal quenching is generally essential for the practical application of luminescent materials. It has been recently found that frameworks with negative thermal expansion (NTE) could be a promising candidate to engineer unconventional luminescence thermal enhancement. However, the mechanism through which luminescence thermal enhancement can be well tuned remains an open issue. In this work, enabled by altering ligands in a series of UiO-66 derived Eu-based metal-organic frameworks, it was revealed that the changes in the thermal expansion are closely related to luminescence thermal enhancement. The NTE of the aromatic ring part favors luminescence thermal enhancement, while contraction of the carboxylic acid part plays the opposite role. Modulation of functional groups in ligands can change the thermal vibration of aromatic rings and then achieve luminescence thermal enhancement in a wide temperature window. Our findings pave the way to manipulate the NTE and luminescence thermal enhancement based on ligand engineering.

Phosphorescent Carbene-Gold-Arylacetylide Materials as Emitters for Near UV-OLEDs

A series of carbene-gold-acetylide complexes [(BiCAAC)AuCC]n C6 H5- n (n = 1, Au1; n = 2, Au2; n = 3, Au3; BiCAAC = bicyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene) have been synthesized in high yields. Compounds Au1-Au3 exhibit deep-blue to blue-green phosphorescence with good quantum yields up to 43% in all media. An increase of the (BiCAAC)Au moieties in gold complexes Au1-Au3 increases the extinction coefficients in the UV-vis spectra and stronger oscillator strength coefficients supported by theoretical calculations. The luminescence radiative rates decrease with an increase of the (BiCAAC)Au moieties. The time-dependent density functional theory study supports a charge-transfer nature of the phosphorescence due to the large (0.5-0.6 eV) energy gap between singlet excited (S1 ) and triplet excited (T1 ) states. Transient luminescence study reveals the presence of both nonstructured UV prompt-fluorescence and vibronically resolved long-lived phosphorescence 428 nm. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) are fabricated by physical vapor deposition with 2,8-bis(diphenylphosphoryl)dibenzo[b,d]furan (PPF) as a host material with complex Au1. The near-UV electroluminescence is observed at 405 nm with device efficiency of 1% while demonstrating OLED device lifetime LT50 up to 20 min at practical brightness of 10 nits, indicating a highly promising class of materials to develop stable UV-OLEDs.

Bis-tridentate Ir(III) Phosphors and Blue Hyperphosphorescence with Suppressed Efficiency Roll-Off at High Brightness

Narrowband blue emitters are indispensable in achieving ultrahigh-definition OLED displays that satisfy the stringent BT 2020 standard. Hereby, a series of bis-tridentate Ir(III) complexes bearing electron-deficient imidazo[4,5-b]pyridin-2-ylidene carbene coordination fragments and 2,6-diaryloxy pyridine ancillary groups were designed and synthesized. They exhibited deep blue emission with quantum yields of up to 89% and a radiative lifetime of 0.71 μs in the DPEPO host matrix, indicating both the high efficiency and excellent energy transfer process from the host to dopant. The OLED based on Irtb1 showed an emission at 468 nm with a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 22.7%. Moreover, the hyper-OLED with Irtb1 as a sensitizer for transferring energy to terminal emitter v-DABNA exhibited a narrowband blue emission at 472 nm and full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 24 nm, a maximum EQE of 23.5%, and EQEs of 19.7, 16.1, and 12.9% at a practical brightness of 100, 1000, and 5000 cd/m2, respectively.

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence tetradentate ligand-containing gold(III) complexes with preferential molecular orientation and their application in organic light-emitting devices

A new class of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) pyridine-/pyrazine-containing tetradentate C^C^N^N gold(III) complexes have been designed and synthesized. Displaying photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of up to 0.77 in solid-state thin films, these complexes showed at-least a six-fold increase in the radiative decay rate constant (kr) in toluene upon increasing temperature from 210 to 360 K. Using variable-temperature (VT) ultrafast transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy, the reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) processes were directly observed and the activation parameters were determined, in line with the results of the Boltzmann two-level model fittings, in which the energy separation values between the lowest-lying singlet excited state (S1) and the lowest-lying triplet excited state (T1), ΔE(S1-T1), of these complexes were estimated to be in the range of 0.16-0.18 eV. Through strategic modification of the position of the electron-donating -tBu substituent in the cyclometalating ligand, the permanent dipole moments (PDMs) of these tetradentate gold(III) emitters could be manipulated to enhance their horizontal alignment in the emitting layer of organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs). Consequently, the resulting vacuum-deposited OLEDs demonstrated a 30% increase in the theoretical out-coupling efficiency (ηout), as well as promising electroluminescence (EL) performance with maximum external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of up to 15.7%.

Fast and Selective Luminescent Sensing by Langmuir-Schaeffer Films Based on Controlled Assembly of Perylene Bisimide Modified with A Cyclometalated AuIII Complex

Condensed films of functional luminophores dominated by the magnitude and dimensionality of the intermolecular interactions play important roles in sensing performance. However, controlling the molecular assembly and regulating photophysical properties remain challenging. In this study, a new luminophore, ortho-PBI-Au, was synthesized by anchoring a cyclometalated alkynyl-gold(III) unit at the ortho-position of perylene bisimide. An unprecedented T-type packing model driven by weak Au-π interaction and Au-H bonds was observed, laying foundation for striking properties of the luminophore. Controlled assembly of ortho-PBI-Au at the air-water interface, realized using the classical Langmuir-Schaeffer technique, afforded the obtained luminescent films with different packing structures. With an optimized film, sensitive, selective, and rapid detection of a hazardous new psychoactive substance, phenylethylamine (PEA), was achieved. The detection limit, response time, and recovery time were <4 ppb, <1 s, and <5 s, respectively, surpassing the performance of the PEA sensors known thus far. The relationship between the characters of films and the sensing performance was systematically examined by grey relational analysis (GRA). The present study suggests that designing novel molecular aggregation with definite adlayer structure is a crucial strategy to enhance the sensing performance, which could be favorable for the film-based fluorescent sensors.

Cyclometalated (N,C) Au(III) Complexes: The Impact of Trans Effects on Their Synthesis, Structure, and Reactivity

ConspectusThe early years of gold catalysis were dominated by Au(I) complexes and inorganic Au(III) salts. Thanks to the development of chelating ligands, more sophisticated Au(III) complexes can now be easily prepared and handled. The choice of the ancillary ligand has great consequences for the synthesis, properties, and reactivity of the Au(III) complex in question. Among the major factors controlling reactivity are the "trans effect" and the "trans influence" that a ligand imparts at the ligand trans to itself. The kinetic trans effect manifests itself with an increased labilization of the ligand trans to a given ligand and arises from an interplay between ground-state and transition-state effects. The term trans influence, on the other hand, is a ground-state effect only, describing the tendency of a given ligand to weaken the metal-ligand bond trans to itself. Herein, we will use the term "trans effect" to describe both the kinetic and the thermodynamic properties, whereas the term "trans influence" will refer only to thermodynamic properties. We will describe how these trans effects strongly impact the chemistry of the commonly encountered cyclometalated (N,C) Au(III) complexes, a class of complexes we have studied for more than a decade. We found that the outcome of reactions like alkylation, arylation, and alkynylation as well as halide metathesis are dictated by the different trans influence of the two termini of the chelating tpy ligand in (tpy)Au(OAcF)2 (tpy = 2-(p-tolyl)pyridine, OAcF = OCOCF3, tpy-C > tpy-N). There is a strong preference for high trans influence ligands to end up trans to tpy-N, whereas the lower trans influence ligands end up trans to tpy-C. Taking advantage of these preferences, tailor-made (N,C)Au(III) complexes could be prepared. For the functionalization of alkenes at (tpy)Au(OAcF)2, the higher trans effect of tpy-C would suggest that the coordination site trans to tpy-C would be kinetically more available than the one trans to tpy-N. However, due to the thermodynamic preference of having the σ-bonded ligand, resulting from the nucleophilic addition to alkenes, trans to tpy-N, functionalization of alkenes was only observed trans to tpy-N. However, for a catalytic process, the reaction should happen trans to tpy-C, as was observed for the trifluoroacetoxylation of acetylene. When functionalizing acetylene in the coordination site trans to tpy-N, protolytic cleavage of the Au-C(vinyl) bond to release the product did not occur at all, whereas trans to tpy-C protolytic cleavage of the Au-C(vinyl) bond occurred readily, in agreement with the higher trans influence of tpy-C over tpy-N. The large impact of the trans effects in Au(III) complexes is finally exemplified with the synthesis of [(tpy)Au(π-allyl)]+[NTf2]-, which resulted in a highly asymmetric π + σ bonding of the allyl moiety. Here, the bonding is such that the most thermodynamically favorable situation is achieved, with the carbon trans to tpy-N bonded in a σ-fashion and the π-allyl double bond being coordinated trans to tpy-C.

Pyrenyl-Substituted Imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline Rhenium(I) Complexes with Record-High Triplet Excited-State Lifetimes at Room Temperature: Steric Control of Photoinduced Processes in Bichromophoric Systems

Photochemical applications based on intermolecular photoinduced energy triplet state transfer require photosensitizers with strong visible absorptivity and extended triplet excited-state lifetimes. Using a bichromophore approach, two Re(I) tricarbonyl complexes with 2-(1-pyrenyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline (pyr-imphen) and 1-(4-(methyl)phenyl)-2-(1-pyrenyl)-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline (pyr-tol-imphen) showing extraordinary long triplet excited states at room temperature (>1000 μs) were obtained, and their ground- and excited-state properties were thoroughly investigated by a wide range of spectroscopic methods, including femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA). It is worth noting that the designed [ReCl(CO)3(pyr-imphen)] (1) and [ReCl(CO)3(pyr-tol-imphen)] (2) complexes form a unique pair differing in the mutual chromophore arrangement due to introduction of a 4-(methyl)phenyl substituent into the imidazole ring at the H1-position, imposing an increase in the dihedral angle between the pyrene and {ReCl(CO)3(imphen)} chromophores. The magnitude of the electronic coupling between the pyrene and {ReCl(CO)3(imphen)} chromophores was found to be an efficient tool to tune the photophysical properties of 1 and 2. The usefulness of designed Re(I) compounds as triplet photosensitizers was successfully verified by examination of their abilities for 1O2 generation and triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion. The phosphorescence lifetimes, ∼1800 μs for 1 and ∼1500 μs for 2, are the longest lifetimes reported for Re(I) diimine carbonyl complexes in solution at room temperature.

Ag6 Cu8 (C=CAr)14 (DPPB)2 : A Rigid Ligand Co-Protected Bimetallic Silver(I)-Copper(I) Cluster with Room-Temperature Luminescence

Metal clusters have become increasingly important in various applications, with ligands playing a crucial role in their construction. In this study, we synthesized a bimetallic cluster, Ag6 Cu8 (C=CAr)14 (DPPB)2 (Ag6 Cu8 ), using a rigid acetylene ligand, 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenylacetylide. Through single-crystal structure characterization, we discovered that the butterfly-shaped Ag2 Cu2 motifs were subject to distortion due to steric hindrance imposed by the rigid ligand. These motifs assembled together through shared vertices and edges. Mass spectrometry analysis revealed that the primary fragments detected during electrospray ionization (ESI) testing corresponded to the Ag2 Cu2 motifs. Furthermore, we conducted a comprehensive investigation of the cluster's solution properties employing 31 P NMR, UV-vis absorption, and photoluminescent measurements. In contrast to previously reported Ag/Cu bimetallic clusters protected by flexible ligands, Ag6 Cu8 protected by rigid ligands exhibited intriguing room temperature fluorescence properties alongside excellent thermal stability. DFT calculations on Ag6 Cu8 and Ag6 Cu8 with the rigid aromatic ring removed revealed that the presence of the rigid aromatic ring can lower the electronic energy levels of the cluster, and reduce the energy gap from 4.05 eV to 3.45 eV. Moreover, the rigid ligand further suppressed the non-radiative transition process, leading to room temperature fluorescence emission.

E- or Z-Isomers Arising from the Geometries of Ligands in the Mercury Complex of 2-(Anthracen-9-ylmethylene)-N-phenylhydrazine Carbothioamide

An anionic mercury(II) complex of 2-(anthracen-9-ylmethylene)-N-phenylhydrazine carbothioamide (HATU) and two isomers of a neutral mercury(II) complex of the anion of the same ligand (ATU) were reported. The anionic complex [Hg(HATU)2Cl2]·CH2Cl2 had a monodentate HATU ligand (a neutral form of the ligand) and chloride ligands. The two conformational isomers were of the neutral mercury(II) complex Hg(ATU)2·2DMF. The two isomers were from the E or Z geometry of the ligands across the conjugated C=N-N=C-N scaffold of the coordinated ligand. The two isomers of the complex were independently prepared and characterized. The spectroscopic properties of the isomers in solution were studied by 1H NMR as well as fluorescence spectroscopy. Facile conversion of the E-isomer to the Z-isomer in solution was observed. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the Z-isomer of the complex was stable compared to the E-isomer by an energy of 14.35 kJ/mol; whereas, E isomer of the ligand was more stable than Z isomer by 8.37 KJ/mol. The activation barrier for the conversion of the E-isomer to the Z-isomer of the ligand was 167.37 kJ/mol. The role of the mercury ion in the conversion of the E-form to the Z-form was discussed. The mercury complex [Hg(HATU)2Cl2]·CH2Cl2 had the E-form of the ligand. Distinct photophysical features of these mercury complexes were presented.

Recent advances in the design of afterglow materials: mechanisms, structural regulation strategies and applications

Afterglow materials are attracting widespread attention owing to their distinctive and long-lived optical emission properties which create exciting opportunities in various fields. Recent research has led to the discovery of many new afterglow materials featuring high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) and lifetimes of up to several hours under ambient conditions. Afterglow materials are typically categorized according to their luminescence mechanism, such as long-persistent luminescence (LPL), room temperature phosphorescence (RTP), or thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Through rational design and novel synthetic strategies to modulate spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and populate triplet exciton states (T1), luminophores with long lifetimes and bright afterglow characteristics can be realized. Initial research towards afterglow materials focused mainly on pure inorganic materials, many of which possessed inherent disadvantages such as metal toxicity or low energy emissions. In recent years, organic-inorganic hybrid afterglow materials (OIHAMs) have been developed with high PLQY and long lifetimes. These hybrid materials exploit the tunable structure and easy processing of organic molecules, as well as enhanced SOC and intersystem crossing (ISC) processes involving heavy atom dopants, to achieve excellent afterglow performance. In this review, we begin by briefly discussing the structure and composition of inorganic and organic-inorganic hybrid afterglow materials, including strategies for regulating their lifetime, PLQY and luminescence wavelength. The specific advantages of organic-inorganic hybrid afterglow materials, including low manufacturing costs, diverse molecular/electronic structures, tunable structures and optical properties, and compatibility with a variety of substrates, are emphasized. Subsequently, we discuss in detail the fundamental mechanisms used by afterglow materials, their classification, design principles, and end applications (including sensing, anticounterfeiting, and photoelectric devices, among others). Finally, existing challenges and promising future directions are discussed, laying a platform for the design of afterglow materials for specific applications.

Nickel(II) Analogues of Phosphorescent Platinum(II) Complexes with Picosecond Excited-State Decay

Square-planar NiII complexes are interesting as cheaper and more sustainable alternatives to PtII luminophores widely used in lighting and photocatalysis. We investigated the excited-state behavior of two NiII complexes, which are isostructural with two luminescent PtII complexes. The initially excited singlet metal-to-ligand charge transfer (1 MLCT) excited states in the NiII complexes decay to metal-centered (3 MC) excited states within less than 1 picosecond, followed by non-radiative relaxation of the 3 MC states to the electronic ground state within 9-21 ps. This contrasts with the population of an emissive triplet ligand-centered (3 LC) excited state upon excitation of the PtII analogues. Structural distortions of the NiII complexes are responsible for this discrepant behavior and lead to dark 3 MC states far lower in energy than the luminescent 3 LC states of PtII compounds. Our findings suggest that if these structural distortions could be restricted by more rigid coordination environments and stronger ligand fields, the excited-state relaxation in four-coordinate NiII complexes could be decelerated such that luminescent 3 LC or 3 MLCT excited states become accessible. These insights are relevant to make NiII fit for photophysical and photochemical applications that relied on PtII until now.

Encoding Hole-Particle Information in the Multi-Channel MolOrbImage for Machine-Learned Excited-State Energies of Large Photofunctional Materials

We present a novel class of one-electron multi-channel molecular orbital images (MolOrbImages) designed for the prediction of excited-state energetics in conjunction with the state-of-the-art VGG-type machine-learning architecture. By representing hole and particle states in the excitation process as channels of MolOrbImages, the revised VGG model achieves excellent prediction accuracy for both low-lying singlet and triplet states, with mean absolute errors (MAEs) of <0.08 and <0.1 eV for QM9 molecules and large photofunctional materials with up to 560 atoms, respectively. Remarkably, the model demonstrates exceptional performance (MAE < 1 kcal/mol) for the T1 state of QM9 molecules, making it a non-system-specific model that approaches chemical accuracy. The general rules attained, for instance, the improved performance with well-defined MO energies and the reduced overfitting concern via the inclusion of physically insightful hole-particle information, provide invaluable guidelines for the further design of orbital-based descriptors targeting molecular excited states.

A Rising Star: Luminescent Carbene-Metal-Amide Complexes

Coinage metal (gold, silver, and copper) complexes are attractive candidates to substitute the widely studied noble metal complexes, such as, iridium(III) and platinum(II), as luminescent materials in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, the development of coinage metal complexes exhibiting high emission quantum yields and short exciton lifetimes is still a formidable challenge. In the past few years, coinage metal complexes featuring a carbene-metal-amide (CMA) motif have emerged as a new class of luminescent materials in OLEDs. Thanks to the coinage metal-bridged linear geometry, coplanar conformation, and the formation of excited states with dominant ligand-to-ligand charge transfer character and reduced metal d-orbital participation, most CMA complexes have high radiative rates via thermally activated delayed fluorescence. Currently, the family of CMA complexes have rapidly evolved and remarkable progresses in CMA-based OLEDs have been made. Here, a Concept article on CMA complexes is presented, with a focus on molecular design principles, the correlation between molecular structure/conformation and optoelectronic properties, as well as OLED performance. The future prospects of CMA complexes are also discussed.

Electroluminescence and hyperphosphorescence from stable blue Ir(III) carbene complexes with suppressed efficiency roll-off

Efficient Förster energy transfer from a phosphorescent sensitizer to a thermally activated delayed fluorescent terminal emitter constitutes a potential solution for achieving superb blue emissive organic light-emitting diodes, which are urgently needed for high-performance displays. Herein, we report the design of four Ir(III) metal complexes, f-ct1a ‒ d, that exhibit efficient true-blue emissions and fast radiative decay lifetimes. More importantly, they also undergo facile isomerization in the presence of catalysts (sodium acetate and p-toluenesulfonic acid) at elevated temperature and, hence, allow for the mass production of either emitter without decomposition. In this work, the resulting hyper-OLED exhibits a true-blue color (Commission Internationale de I'Eclairage coordinate CIEy = 0.11), a full width at half maximum of 18 nm, a maximum external quantum efficiency of 35.5% and a high external quantum efficiency 20.3% at 5000 cd m‒2, paving the way for innovative blue OLED technology.

Amplifying the dielectric constant of shellac by incorporating natural clays for organic field effect transistors (OFETs)

We demonstrate in this work the practical use of uniform mixtures of a bioresin shellac and four natural clays, i.e. montmorillonite, sepiolite, halloysite and vermiculate as dielectrics in organic field effect transistors (OFETs). We present a thorough characterization of their processability and film forming characteristic, surface characterization, elaborate dielectric investigation and the fabrication of field effect transistors with two classic organic semiconductors, i.e. pentacene and fullerene C60. We show that low operating voltage of approximately 4 V is possible for all the OFETs using several combinations of clays and shellac. The capacitance measurements show an improvement of the dielectric constant of shellac by a factor of 2, to values in excess of 7 in the uniform mixtures of sepiolite and montmorillonite with this bioresin.

Unraveling the Marked Differences of the Excited-State Properties of Arylgold(III) Complexes with C∧N∧C Tridentate Ligands

Three structurally similar gold(III) complexes with C∧N∧C tridentate ligands, [1; C∧N∧C = 2,6-diphenylpyridine], [2; C∧N∧C = 2,6-diphenylpyrazine], and [3; C∧N∧C = 2,6-diphenyltriazine], have been investigated theoretically to rationalize the marked difference in emission behaviors. The geometrical and electronic structures, spectra properties, radiative and nonradiative decay processes, as well as reverse intersystem crossing and reverse internal conversion (RIC) processes were thoroughly analyzed using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations. The computed results indicate that there is a small energy difference Δ E T 1 - T 1 ' between the lowest-energy triplet state (T1) and the second lowest-energy triplet state (T1') of complexes 2 and 3, suggesting that the excitons in the T1 state can reach the emissive higher-energy T1' through the RIC process. In addition, the non-emissive T1 states of gold(III) complexes in solution can be ascribed to the easily accessible metal-centered (3MC) state or possibly tunneling into high-energy vibrationally excited singlet states for nonradiative decay. The low efficiency of 3 is attributed to the deactivation pathway via the 3MC state. The present study elucidates the relationship between structure and property of gold(III) complexes featuring C∧N∧C ligands and providing a comprehensive understanding of the significant differences in their luminescence behaviors.

A new family of luminescent [Pt(pbt)2(C6F5)L]n+ (n = 1, 0) complexes: synthesis, optical and cytotoxic studies

Given the widely recognized bioactivity of 2-arylbenzothiazoles against tumor cells, we have designed a new family of luminescent heteroleptic pentafluorophenyl-bis(2-phenylbenzothiazolyl) PtIV derivatives, fac-[Pt(pbt)2(C6F5)L]n+ (n = 1, 0) [L = 4-Mepy 1, 4-pyridylbenzothiazole (pybt) 2, 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bpy) 3, 1,2-bis-(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpe) 4 (E/Z ratio: 90/10), 1,4-bis-(pyridyl)butadiyne (bpyb) 5, trifluoroacetate (-OCOCF3) 6] and a dinuclear complex [{Pt(pbt)2(C6F5)}2(μ-bpyb)](PF6)27, in which the trans ligand to the metalated C-(pbt) was varied to modify the optical properties and lipophilicity. Their photophysical properties were systematically studied through experimental and theoretical investigations, which were strongly dependent on the identity of the N-bonded ligand. Thus, complexes 1, 3 and 6 display, in different media, emission from the triplet excited states of primarily intraligand 3ILCT nature localized on the pbt ligand, while the emissions of 2, 5 and 7 were ascribed to a mixture of close 3IL'(N donor)/3ILCT(pbt) excited states, as supported by lifetime measurements and theoretical calculations. Irradiation of the initial E/Z mixture of 4 (15 min) led to a steady state composed of roughly 1 : 1.15 (E : Z) and this complex was not emissive at room temperature due to an enhanced intramolecular E to Z isomerization process of the 1,2-bis-(4-pyridyl)ethylene ligand. Complexes 1-3 and 6 showed excellent quantum yields for the generation of singlet oxygen in aerated MeCN solution with the values of ϕ(1O2) ranging from 0.66 to 0.86 using phenalenone as a reference. Cationic complexes 1-3 exhibited remarkable efficacy in the nanomolar range against A549 (lung carcinoma) and HeLa (cervix carcinoma) cell lines with notable selectivity relative to the non-tumorigenic BEAS-2B (bronchial epithelium) cells. In the A549 cell line, the neutral complex 6 showed low cytotoxicity (IC50: 29.40 μM) and high photocytotoxicity (IC50: 5.75) when cells were irradiated with blue light for 15 min. These complexes do not show evidence of DNA interaction.

Fluorescent and Catalytic Properties of a 2D Lamellar Zn Metal-Organic Framework with sql Network Structure

A two-dimensional (2D) lamellar Zn metal-organic framework (Zn-MOF, 1) with a fluorescent 1,6-di(pyridin-3-yl)pyrene (3-DPPy) and 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (BDC2-) bridging linkers was prepared and structurally characterized. The chemical formula of 1 is [Zn(μ-3-DPPy)(μ-BDC)]n. The mononuclear Zn(II) ion, acting as a node, is tetrahedrally coordinated with two 3-DPPy and two BDC linkers. The coordination environment of Zn(II) is a distorted tetrahedral geometry. The Zn-MOF is the sql network structure based on topology analysis. The undulated 2D sheets of 1 tightly pack together to form a lamellar structure. The pyrene moieties are parallelly oriented to each other. The Zn-MOF is not porous, possibly because the mononuclear Zn(II) node did not form cluster-based secondary building units due to the less symmetric 3-DPPy. The steady-state fluorescence measurements indicate that the fluorescence signal of the 1 is slightly blue-shifted compared to the free 3-DPPy in the solid state. The excimer emission band at 463 nm for crystalline 3-DPPy is shifted to 447 nm for 1. The value of 447 nm is also a blue-shift value compared to nonsubstituted pyrene crystals (470 nm). Despite its nonporosity, the surface Lewis acidic sites of 1 could catalyze the transesterification of esters. Surface defect sites are responsible for this catalytic activity.

A Conformationally Restricted Gold(III) Complex Elicits Antiproliferative Activity in Cancer Cells

Diamine ligands are effective structural scaffolds for tuning the reactivity of transition-metal complexes for catalytic, materials, and phosphorescent applications and have been leveraged for biological use. In this work, we report the synthesis and characterization of a novel class of cyclometalated [C^N] Au(III) complexes bearing secondary diamines including a norbornane backbone, (2R,3S)-N2,N3-dibenzylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptane-2,3-diamine, or a cyclohexane backbone, (1R,2R)-N1,N2-dibenzylcyclohexane-1,2-diamine. X-ray crystallography confirms the square-planar geometry and chirality at nitrogen. The electronic character of the conformationally restricted norbornane backbone influences the electrochemical behavior with redox potentials of -0.8 to -1.1 V, atypical for Au(III) complexes. These compounds demonstrate promising anticancer activity, particularly, complex 1, which bears a benzylpyridine organogold framework, and supported by the bicyclic conformationally restricted diaminonorbornane, shows good potency in A2780 cells. We further show that a cellular response to 1 evokes reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and does not induce mitochondrial dysfunction. This class of complexes provides significant stability and reactivity for different applications in protein modification, catalysis, and therapeutics.

Designing Nonconventional Luminescent Materials with Efficient Emission in Dilute Solutions via Modulation of Dynamic Hydrogen Bonds

Nonconventional luminescent materials (NLMs) which do not contain traditional aromatic chromophores are of great interest due to their unique chemical structures, optical properties, and their potential applications in various areas, such as cellular imaging and chemical sensing. However, most reported NLMs show weak or no emission in dilute solutions, which severely limits their applications. In this work, dynamic hydrogen bonds were utilized to design NLMs with efficient emission in dilute solutions. To further validate the results, polymers P1 and P2 were successfully prepared and investigated. It was found that the luminescence quantum efficiency of P1 and P2 at a concentration of 0.1 mg/mL in water solution was 8.9 and 0.6%, respectively. The high efficiency can be attributed to the fact that polymer P1 has more intra- or intermolecular dynamic hydrogen bonds and other short interactions than P2 in dilute solutions, allowing P1 to achieve the through-space conjugation effect to increase the degree of system conjugation, restrict molecular motion, and decrease nonradiative transitions, which can effectively improve luminescence. In addition, polymer P2 exhibits the characteristics of clustering-triggered emission, excitation wavelength-dependent and concentration-dependent fluorescence properties, excellent photobleaching resistance, low cytotoxicity, and selective recognition of Fe³⁺. The present study investigates the manipulation of luminescence properties of NLMs in dilute solutions through the modulation of dynamic hydrogen bonds. This approach can serve as a semi-empirical technique for designing and building innovative NLMs in the times ahead.

Next Generation Gold Drugs and Probes: Chemistry and Biomedical Applications

The gold drugs, gold sodium thiomalate (Myocrisin), aurothioglucose (Solganal), and the orally administered auranofin (Ridaura), are utilized in modern medicine for the treatment of inflammatory arthritis including rheumatoid and juvenile arthritis; however, new gold agents have been slow to enter the clinic. Repurposing of auranofin in different disease indications such as cancer, parasitic, and microbial infections in the clinic has provided impetus for the development of new gold complexes for biomedical applications based on unique mechanistic insights differentiated from auranofin. Various chemical methods for the preparation of physiologically stable gold complexes and associated mechanisms have been explored in biomedicine such as therapeutics or chemical probes. In this Review, we discuss the chemistry of next generation gold drugs, which encompasses oxidation states, geometry, ligands, coordination, and organometallic compounds for infectious diseases, cancer, inflammation, and as tools for chemical biology via gold-protein interactions. We will focus on the development of gold agents in biomedicine within the past decade. The Review provides readers with an accessible overview of the utility, development, and mechanism of action of gold-based small molecules to establish context and basis for the thriving resurgence of gold in medicine.

Luminescence and Palladium: The Odd Couple

The synthesis, photophysical properties, and applications of highly fluorescent and phosphorescent palladium complexes are reviewed, covering the period 2018–2022. Despite the fact that the Pd atom appears closely related with an efficient quenching of the fluorescence of different molecules, different synthetic strategies have been recently optimized to achieve the preservation and even the amplification of the luminescent properties of several fluorophores after Pd incorporation. Beyond classical methodologies such as orthopalladation or the use of highly emissive ligands as porphyrins and related systems (for instance, biladiene), new concepts such as AIE (Aggregation Induced Emission) in metallacages or in coordination-driven supramolecular compounds (CDS) by restriction of intramolecular motions (RIM), or complexes showing TADF (Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence), are here described and analysed. Without pretending to be comprehensive, selected examples of applications in areas such as the fabrication of lighting devices, biological markers, photodynamic therapy, or oxygen sensing are also here reported.

Photoactive Metal-to-Ligand Charge Transfer Excited States in 3d6 Complexes with Cr0, MnI, FeII, and CoIII

Many coordination complexes and organometallic compounds with the 4d⁶ and 5d⁶ valence electron configurations have outstanding photophysical and photochemical properties, which stem from metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excited states. This substance class makes extensive use of the most precious and least abundant metal elements, and consequently there has been a long-standing interest in first-row transition metal compounds with photoactive MLCT states. Semiprecious copper(I) with its completely filled 3d subshell is a relatively straightforward and well explored case, but in 3d⁶ complexes the partially filled d-orbitals lead to energetically low-lying metal-centered (MC) states that can cause undesirably fast MLCT excited state deactivation. Herein, we discuss recent advances made with isoelectronic Cr⁰, Mn^I, Fe^II, and Co^III compounds, for which long-lived MLCT states have become accessible over the past five years. Furthermore, we discuss possible future developments in the search for new first-row transition metal complexes with partially filled 3d subshells and photoactive MLCT states for next-generation applications in photophysics and photochemistry.

Machine-Learned Electronically Excited States with the MolOrbImage Generated from the Molecular Ground State

We present a general machine learning framework for probing the electronic state properties using the novel quantum descriptor MolOrbImage. Each pixel of the MolOrbImage records the quantum information generated by the integration of the physical operator with a pair of bra and ket molecular orbital (MO) states. Inspired by the success of deep convolutional neural networks (NNs) in computer vision, we have implemented the convolutional-layer-dominated MO-NN model. Using the orbital energy and electron repulsion integral MolOrbImages, the MO-NN model achieves promising prediction accuracies against the ADC(2)/cc-pVTZ reference for transition energies to both low-lying singlet [mean absolute error (MAE) < 0.16 eV] and triplet (MAE < 0.14 eV) states. An apparent improvement in the prediction of oscillator strength, which has been shown to be challenging previously, has been demonstrated in this study. Moreover, the transferability test indicates the remarkable extrapolation capacity of the MO-NN model to describe the out of data set systems.

Realization of Long Operational Lifetimes in Vacuum-Deposited Organic Light-Emitting Devices Based on para-Substituted Pyridine Carbazolylgold(III) C^C^N Complexes

A new series of robust C^C^N carbazolylgold(III) complexes is designed and synthesized through the introduction of inert and sterically bulky oligophenyl substituents on the pyridyl moiety of the cyclometalating ligand. High photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 96% are recorded with these complexes doped in solid-state thin films, and short excited-state lifetimes of 0.3 μs or less in the solid state at room temperature are found. Promising electroluminescence (EL) performances are shown by the vacuum-deposited organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) based on this series of gold(III) complexes. High external quantum efficiencies of up to 19.5% with efficiency roll-offs of down to 10% at a practical luminance brightness level of 1000 cd m^-2 are achieved. More importantly, record-long operational lifetimes (LT₅₀) of up to 470,700 h at 100 cd m^-2 are realized, which is currently the highest value among all classes of gold(III) complexes with tridentate pincer ligands. Particularly, by introducing a sterically bulky terphenyl moiety on the reactive site of the pyridine ring, the LT₅₀ value is shown to attain ∼7 times longer half-lifetime than that based on the unsubstituted complex. These unprecedented EL performances and the simple synthetic route in a mercury-free fashion make them promising emitting materials for practical OLEDs toward commercialization.

Discrimination and control of the exciton-recombination region of thermal-stressed blue organic light-emitting diodes

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) suffer from carrier imbalance under high temperatures. We improved their thermal stability by using space interlayers adjacent to the charge transport layers. The current efficiency of the optimized OLEDs increased under high temperature, with an increase of over one order of magnitude of the electron mobility.

On the mercuration, palladation, transmetalation and direct auration of a C^N^C pincer ligand

The C^N^C ligand 2,6-bis(2,3-dialkoxyphenyl)pyridine forms dimercury and orthopalladated complexes, both of which may be transmetallated to gold(III) complexes; the gold complexes may also be formed directly in a Rh(III)-catalysed process, hence it is possible to circumvent the use of organomercury intermediates in the synthesis of this important class of compound.

Acetylides for the Preparation of Phosphorescent Iridium(III) Complexes: Iridaoxazoles and Their Transformation into Hydroxycarbenes and N,C(sp3),C(sp2),O-Tetradentate Ligands

The preparation of three families of phosphorescent iridium(III) emitters, including iridaoxazole derivatives, hydroxycarbene compounds, and N,C(sp³),C(sp²),O-tetradentate containing complexes, has been performed starting from dimers cis-[Ir(μ²-η²-C≡CR){κ²-C,N-(MeC₆H₃-py)}₂]₂ (R = ^tBu (1a), Ph (1b)). Reactions of 1a with benzamide, acetamide, phenylacetamide, and trifluoroacetamide lead to the iridaoxazole derivatives Ir{κ²-C,O-[C(CH₂^tBu)NC(R)O]}{κ²-C,N-(MeC₆H₃-py)}₂ (R = Ph (2), Me (3), CH₂Ph (4), CF₃ (5)) with a fac disposition of carbons and heteroatoms around the metal center. In 2-methyltetrahydrofuran and dichloromethane, water promotes the C-N rupture of the IrC-N bond of the iridaoxazole ring of 3-5 to form amidate-iridium(III)-hydroxycarbene derivatives Ir{κ¹-N-[NHC(R)O]}{κ²-C,N-(MeC₆H₃-py)}₂{═C(CH₂^tBu)OH} (R = Me (6), CH₂Ph (7), CF₃ (8)). In contrast to 1a, dimer 1b reacts with benzamide and acetamide to give Ir{κ⁴-N,C,C',O-[py-MeC₆H₃-C(CH₂-C₆H₄)NHC(R)O]}{κ²-C,N-(MeC₆H₃-py)}(R = Ph (9), Me (10)), which bear a N,C(sp³),C(sp²),O-tetradentate ligand resulting from a triple coupling (an alkynyl ligand, an amide, and a coordinated aryl group) and a C-H bond activation at the metal coordination sphere. Complexes 2-4 and 6-10 are emissive upon photoexcitation, in orange (2-4), green (6-8), and yellow (9 and 10) regions, with quantum yields between low and moderate (0.01-0.50) and short lifetimes (0.2-9.0 μs).

Organogold(III) Complexes Display Conditional Photoactivities: Evolving From Photodynamic into Photoactivated Chemotherapy in Response to O2 Consumption for Robust Cancer Therapy

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a spatiotemporally controllable, powerful approach in combating cancers but suffers from low activity under hypoxia, whereas photoactivated chemotherapy (PACT) operates in an O₂ -independent manner but compromises the ability to harness O₂ for potent photosensitization. Herein we report that cyclometalated gold(III)-alkyne complexes display a PDT-to-PACT evolving photoactivity for efficient cancer treatment. On the one hand, the gold(III) complexes can act as dual photosensitizers and substrates, leading to conditional PDT activity in oxygenated condition that progresses to highly efficient PACT (ϕ up to 0.63) when O₂ is depleted in solution and under cellular environment. On the other hand, the conditional PDT-to-PACT reactivity can be triggered by external photosensitizers in a similar manner in vitro and in vivo, giving additional tumor-selectivity and/or deep tissue penetration by red-light irradiation that leads to robust anticancer efficacy.

Engineering Coinage Metal Nanoclusters for Electroluminescent Light-Emitting Diodes

Coinage metal nanoclusters (MNCs) are a new type of ultra-small nanoparticles on the sub-nanometer (typically < three nm) scale intermediate between atoms and plasmonic nanoparticles. At the same time, the ultra-small size and discrete energy levels of MNCs enable them to exhibit molecular-like energy gaps, and the total structure involving the metal core and surface ligand together leads to their unique properties. As a novel environmentally friendly chromophore, MNCs are promising candidates for the construction of electroluminescent light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, a systematic summary is urgently needed to correlate the properties of MNCs with their influences on electroluminescent LED applications, describe the synthetic strategies of highly luminescent MNCs for LEDs’ construction, and discuss the general influencing factors of MNC-based electroluminescent LEDs. In this review, we first discuss relevant photoemissions of MNCs that may have major influences on the performance of MNC-based electroluminescent LEDs, and then demonstrate the main synthetic strategies of highly luminescent MNCs. To this end, we illustrate the recent development of electroluminescent LEDs based on MNCs and present our perspectives on the opportunities and challenges, which may shed light on the design of MNC-based electroluminescent LEDs in the near future.

Fused 6/5/6 Metallocycle-Based Tetradentate Pt(II) Emitters for Efficient Green Phosphorescent OLEDs

Pt(II) complexes are promising phosphorescent materials for organic light-emitting diode (OLED) applications in the fields of display, lighting, healthcare, aerospace, and so on. A series of novel biphenyl (bp)-based tetradentate 6/5/6 Pt(II) emitters using oxygen or carbon as a linking atom was designed and developed. The intermolecular interactions in crystal packing, electrochemical, and photophysical properties of the bp-based Pt(II) emitters and also their excited-state properties were systematically studied, which could be effectively regulated by ligand modification through linking group control; however, their emission spectra nearly showed no change. All the bp-based Pt(II) emitters exhibited vibronically featured emission spectra with dominant peaks at 502-505 nm and photoluminescent quantum yields of 24-34% in dichloromethane solution. Green OLED using Pt(bp-12) as an emitter achieved a maximum brightness (L_max) of 16,644 cd/m².

Highly Phosphorescent Dimers of PtAu2 Complexes and the Use in Solution-Processed OLEDs

Two asymmetric PtAu2 complexes having HC≡CC6H4C≡CH (1,4-diethynylbenzene) or HC≡CCarbC≡CH (2,7-diethynyl-9-(2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl)-9H-carbazole) and the corresponding bis(acetylide)-linked Pt2Au4 complexes are prepared and characterized. The structures of PtAu2 complexes 1 and 3 together with Pt2Au4 complex 2 are determined by X-ray crystallography. Relative to PtAu2 complexes, bis(acetylide)-linked Pt2Au4 complexes not only display a distinct red shift of the emission but also provide a much higher phosphorescent efficiency. Utilizing highly emissive Pt2Au4 complexes as phosphorescent dopants, high-efficiency solution-processed OLEDs are obtained with peak current efficiency of 75.9 cd A-1 and external quantum efficiency of 19.0% at luminance of 336 cd m-2 and voltage of 5.2 V. When two PtAu2 moieties are linked by a bis(acetylide) ligand, the corresponding Pt2Au4 complexes show a much improved electroluminescent performance compared with that of asymmetric PtAu2 complexes.
