Atomic-Scale Imaging and Spectroscopy of Electroluminescence at Molecular Interfaces

Clip-on lens for scanning tunneling luminescence microscopy

We demonstrate and verify the in-situ addition of a collecting lens for electroluminescence experiments to an existing scanning tunneling microscope. We fabricate a simple clip-on lens that we reversibly attach at the sample plate via regular sample transfer tools to collimate the light emitted from a plasmonic tunneling junction to the viewport ordinarily used for optical access. The proximity of the lens to the tunneling junction allows us achieve good collection efficiencies, demonstrating the quick turnaround of converting an existing setup with optical access into a practical scanning luminescence microscope. We verify the function of the clip-on lens by measuring the bias dependent plasmon of Au, Ag, and spatial luminescence maps.•Reversible clip-on lens.•In-situ transfer.•Luminescence.

Selective excitation of vibrations in a single molecule

The capability to excite, probe, and manipulate vibrational modes is essential for understanding and controlling chemical reactions at the molecular level. Recent advancements in tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopies have enabled the probing of vibrational fingerprints in a single molecule with Ångström-scale spatial resolution. However, achieving controllable excitation of specific vibrational modes in individual molecules remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate the selective excitation and probing of vibrational modes in single deprotonated phthalocyanine molecules utilizing resonance Raman spectroscopy in a scanning tunneling microscope. Selective excitation is achieved by finely tuning the excitation wavelength of the laser to be resonant with the vibronic transitions between the molecular ground electronic state and the vibrational levels in the excited electronic state, resulting in the state-selective enhancement of the resonance Raman signal. Our approach contributes to setting the stage for steering chemical transformations in molecules on surfaces by selective excitation of molecular vibrations.

Upconversion electroluminescence in 2D semiconductors integrated with plasmonic tunnel junctions

Plasmonic tunnel junctions are a unique electroluminescent system in which light emission occurs via an interplay between tunnelling electrons and plasmonic fields instead of electron-hole recombination as in conventional light-emitting diodes. It was previously shown that placing luminescent molecules in the tunneling pathway of nanoscopic tunnel junctions results in peculiar upconversion electroluminescence where the energy of emitted photons exceeds that of excitation electrons. Here we report the observation of upconversion electroluminescence in macroscopic van der Waals plasmonic tunnel junctions comprising gold and few-layer graphene electrodes separated by a ~2-nm-thick hexagonal boron nitride tunnel barrier and a monolayer semiconductor. We find that the semiconductor ground exciton emission is triggered at excitation electron energies lower than the semiconductor optical gap. Interestingly, this upconversion is reached in devices operating at a low conductance (<10-6 S) and low power density regime (<102 W cm-2), defying explanation through existing proposed mechanisms. By examining the scaling relationship between plasmonic and excitonic emission intensities, we elucidate the role of inelastic electron tunnelling dipoles that induce optically forbidden transitions in the few-layer graphene electrode and ultrafast hot carrier transfer across the van der Waals interface.

Light Emission and Conductance Fluctuations in Electrically Driven and Plasmonically Enhanced Molecular Junctions

Electrically connected and plasmonically enhanced molecular junctions combine the optical functionalities of high field confinement and enhancement (cavity function), and of high radiative efficiency (antenna function) with the electrical functionalities of molecular transport. Such combined optical and electrical probes have proven useful for the fundamental understanding of metal-molecule contacts and contribute to the development of nanoscale optoelectronic devices including ultrafast electronics and nanosensors. Here, we employ a self-assembled metal-molecule-metal junction with a nanoparticle bridge to investigate correlated fluctuations in conductance and tunneling-induced light emission at room temperature. Despite the presence of hundreds of molecules in the junction, the electrical conductance and light emission are both highly sensitive to atomic-scale fluctuations-a phenomenology reminiscent of picocavities observed in Raman scattering and of luminescence blinking from photoexcited plasmonic junctions. Discrete steps in conductance associated with fluctuating emission intensities through the multiple plasmonic modes of the junction are consistent with a finite number of randomly localized, point-like sources dominating the optoelectronic response. Contrasting with these microscopic fluctuations, the overall plasmonic and electronic functionalities of our devices feature long-term survival at room temperature and under an electrical bias of a few volts, allowing for measurements over several months.

Modeling the electroluminescence of atomic wires from quantum dynamics simulations

Static and time-dependent quantum-mechanical approaches have been employed in the literature to characterize the physics of light-emitting molecules and nanostructures. However, the electromagnetic emission induced by an input current has remained beyond the realm of molecular simulations. This is the challenge addressed here with the help of an equation of motion for the density matrix coupled to a photon bath based on a Redfield formulation. This equation is evolved within the framework of the driven-Liouville von Neumann approach, which incorporates open boundaries by introducing an applied bias and a circulating current. The dissipated electromagnetic power can be computed in this context from the time derivative of the energy. This scheme is applied in combination with a self-consistent tight-binding Hamiltonian to investigate the effects of bias and molecular size on the electroluminescence of metallic and semiconducting chains. For the latter, a complex interplay between bias and molecular length is observed: there is an optimal number of atoms that maximizes the emitted power at high voltages but not at low ones. This unanticipated behavior can be understood in terms of the band bending produced along the semiconducting chain, a phenomenon that is captured by the self-consistency of the method. A simple analytical model is proposed that explains the main features revealed by the simulations. The methodology, applied here at a self-consistent tight-binding level but extendable to more sophisticated Hamiltonians such as density functional tight binding and time dependent density functional theory, promises to be helpful for quantifying the power and quantum efficiency of nanoscale electroluminescent devices.

Reticular Ratchets for Directing Electrochemiluminescence

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) involves charge transfer between electrochemical redox intermediates to produce an excited state for light emission. Ensuring precise control of charge transfer is essential for decoding ECL fundamentals, yet guidelines on how to achieve this for conventional emitters remain unexplored. Molecular ratchets offer a potential solution, as they enable the directional transfer of energy or chemicals while impeding the reverse movement. Herein, we designed 10 pairs of imine-based covalent organic frameworks as reticular ratchets to delicately manipulate the intrareticular charge transfer for directing ECL transduction from electric and chemical energies. Aligning the donor and acceptor (D-A) directions with the imine dipole effectively facilitates charge migration, whereas reversing the D-A direction impedes it. Notably, the ratchet effect of charge transfer directionality intensified with increasing D-A contrast, resulting in a remarkable 680-fold improvement in the ECL efficiency. Furthermore, dipole-controlled exciton binding energy, electron/hole decay kinetics, and femtosecond transient absorption spectra identified the electron transfer tendency from the N-end toward the C-end of reticular ratchets during ECL transduction. An exponential correlation between the ECL efficiency and the dipole difference was discovered. Our work provides a general approach to manipulate charge transfer and design next-generation electrochemical devices.

Plasmon-Molecule Interactions in Single-Molecule Junctions

Single-molecule optoelectronics offers opportunities for advancing integrated photonics and electronics, which also serves as a tool to elucidate the underlying mechanism of light-matter interaction. Plasmonics, which plays pivotal role in the interaction of photons and matter, have became an emerging area. A comprehensive understanding of the plasmonic excitation and modulation mechanisms within single-molecule junctions (SMJs) lays the foundation for optoelectronic devices. Consequently, this review primarily concentrates on illuminating the fundamental principles of plasmonics within SMJs, delving into their research methods and modulation factors of plasmon-exciton. Moreover, we underscore the interaction phenomena within SMJs, including the enhancement of molecular fluorescence by plasmonics, Fano resonance and Rabi splitting caused by the interaction of plasmon-exciton. Finally, by emphasizing the potential applications of plasmonics within SMJs, such as their roles in optical tweezers, single-photon sources, super-resolution imaging, and chemical reactions, we elucidate the future prospects and current challenges in this domain.

Anomalously bright single-molecule upconversion electroluminescence

Efficient upconversion electroluminescence is highly desirable for a broad range of optoelectronic applications, yet to date, it has been reported only for ensemble systems, while the upconversion electroluminescence efficiency remains very low for single-molecule emitters. Here we report on the observation of anomalously bright single-molecule upconversion electroluminescence, with emission efficiencies improved by more than one order of magnitude over previous studies, and even stronger than normal-bias electroluminescence. Intuitively, the improvement is achieved via engineering the energy-level alignments at the molecule-substrate interface so as to activate an efficient spin-triplet mediated upconversion electroluminescence mechanism that only involves pure carrier injection steps. We further validate the intuitive picture with the construction of delicate electroluminescence diagrams for the excitation of single-molecule electroluminescence, allowing to readily identify the prerequisite conditions for producing efficient upconversion electroluminescence. These findings provide deep insights into the microscopic mechanism of single-molecule upconversion electroluminescence and organic electroluminescence in general.

Character of Electronic States in the Transport Gap of Molecules on Surfaces

We report on scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) topographs of individual metal phthalocyanines (MPc) on a thin salt (NaCl) film adsorbed on a gold substrate, at tunneling energies within the molecule's electronic transport gap. Theoretical models of increasing complexity are discussed. The calculations for MPcs adsorbed on a thin NaCl layer on Au(111) demonstrate that the STM pattern rotates with the molecule's orientations─in excellent agreement with the experimental data. Thus, even the STM topography obtained for energies in the transport gap represent the structure of a one atom thick molecule. It is shown that the electronic states inside the transport gap can be rather accurately approximated by linear combinations of bound molecular orbitals (MOs). The gap states include not only the frontier orbitals but also surprisingly large contributions from energetically much lower MOs. These results will be essential for understanding processes, such as exciton creation, which can be induced by electrons tunneling through the transport gap of a molecule.

Molecular Electronics: Creating and Bridging Molecular Junctions and Promoting Its Commercialization

Molecular electronics is driven by the dream of expanding Moore's law to the molecular level for next-generation electronics through incorporating individual or ensemble molecules into electronic circuits. For nearly 50 years, numerous efforts have been made to explore the intrinsic properties of molecules and develop diverse fascinating molecular electronic devices with the desired functionalities. The flourishing of molecular electronics is inseparable from the development of various elegant methodologies for creating nanogap electrodes and bridging the nanogap with molecules. This review first focuses on the techniques for making lateral and vertical nanogap electrodes by breaking, narrowing, and fixed modes, and highlights their capabilities, applications, merits, and shortcomings. After summarizing the approaches of growing single molecules or molecular layers on the electrodes, the methods of constructing a complete molecular circuit are comprehensively grouped into three categories: 1) directly bridging one-molecule-electrode component with another electrode, 2) physically bridging two-molecule-electrode components, and 3) chemically bridging two-molecule-electrode components. Finally, the current state of molecular circuit integration and commercialization is discussed and perspectives are provided, hoping to encourage the community to accelerate the realization of fully scalable molecular electronics for a new era of integrated microsystems and applications.

Back focal plane imaging for light emission from a tunneling junction in a low-temperature ultrahigh-vacuum scanning tunneling microscope

We report the design and realization of the back focal plane (BFP) imaging for the light emission from a tunnel junction in a low-temperature ultrahigh-vacuum (UHV) scanning tunneling microscope (STM). To achieve the BFP imaging in a UHV environment, a compact "all-in-one" sample holder is designed and fabricated, which allows us to integrate the sample substrate with the photon collection units that include a hemisphere solid immersion lens and an aspherical collecting lens. Such a specially designed holder enables the characterization of light emission both within and beyond the critical angle and also facilitates the optical alignment inside a UHV chamber. To test the performance of the BFP imaging system, we first measure the photoluminescence from dye-doped polystyrene beads on a thin Ag film. A double-ring pattern is observed in the BFP image, arising from two kinds of emission channels: strong surface plasmon coupled emissions around the surface plasmon resonance angle and weak transmitted fluorescence maximized at the critical angle, respectively. Such an observation also helps to determine the emission angle for each image pixel in the BFP image and, more importantly, proves the feasibility of our BFP imaging system. Furthermore, as a proof-of-principle experiment, electrically driven plasmon emissions are used to demonstrate the capability of the constructed BFP imaging system for STM induced electroluminescence measurements. A single-ring pattern is obtained in the BFP image, which reveals the generation and detection of the leakage radiation from the surface plasmon propagating on the Ag surface. Further analyses of the BFP image provide valuable information on the emission angle of the leakage radiation, the orientation of the radiating dipole, and the plasmon wavevector. The UHV-BFP imaging technique demonstrated here opens new routes for future studies on the angular distributed emission and dipole orientation of individual quantum emitters in UHV.

Waveguide-Integrated Light-Emitting Metal-Insulator-Graphene Tunnel Junctions

Ultrafast interfacing of electrical and optical signals at the nanoscale is highly desired for on-chip applications including optical interconnects and data processing devices. Here, we report electrically driven nanoscale optical sources based on metal-insulator-graphene tunnel junctions (MIG-TJs), featuring waveguided output with broadband spectral characteristics. Electrically driven inelastic tunneling in a MIG-TJ, realized by integrating a silver nanowire with graphene, provides broadband excitation of plasmonic modes in the junction with propagation lengths of several micrometers (∼10 times larger than that for metal-insulator-metal junctions), which therefore propagate toward the junction edge with low loss and couple to the nanowire waveguide with an efficiency of ∼70% (∼1000 times higher than that for metal-insulator-metal junctions). Alternatively, lateral coupling of the MIG-TJ to a semiconductor nanowire provides a platform for efficient outcoupling of electrically driven plasmonic signals to low-loss photonic waveguides, showing potential for applications at various integration levels.

Gap plasmon modes and plasmon-exciton coupling in a hybrid Au/MoSe2/Au tunneling junction

The light-matter interaction between plasmonic nanocavity modes and excitons at the nanometer scale is here addressed in the scanning tunneling microscope configuration where an MoSe₂ monolayer is located between the tip and the substrate. We investigate by optical excitation the electromagnetic modes of this hybrid Au/MoSe₂/Au tunneling junction using numerical simulations where electron tunneling and the anisotropic character of the MoSe₂ layer are taken into account. In particular, we pointed out gap plasmon modes and Fano-type plasmon-exciton coupling taking place at the MoSe₂/Au substrate interface. The spectral properties and spatial localization of these modes are studied as a function of the tunneling parameters and incident polarization.

Activating Electroluminescence of Charged Naphthalene Diimide Complexes Directly Adsorbed on a Metal Substrate

Electroluminescence from single molecules adsorbed on a conducting surface imposes conflicting demands for the molecule-electrode coupling. To conduct electrons, the molecular orbitals need to be hybridized with the electrodes. To emit light, they need to be decoupled from the electrodes to prevent fluorescence quenching. Here, we show that fully quenched 2,6-core-substituted naphthalene diimide derivative in a self-assembled monolayer directly deposited on a Au(111) surface can be activated with the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope to decouple the relevant frontier orbitals from the metallic substrate. In this way, individual molecules can be driven from a strongly hybridized state with quenched luminescence to a light-emitting state. The emission performance compares in terms of quantum efficiency, stability, and reproducibility to that of single molecules deposited on thin insulating layers. Quantum chemical calculations suggest that the emitted light originates from the singly charged cationic pair of the molecules.

Selectively Addressing Plasmonic Modes and Excitonic States in a Nanocavity Hosting a Quantum Emitter

Controlling the interaction between the excitonic states of a quantum emitter and the plasmonic modes of a nanocavity is key for the development of quantum information processing devices. In this Letter we demonstrate that the tunnel electroluminescence of electrically insulated C₆₀ nanocrystals enclosed in the plasmonic nanocavity at the junction of a scanning tunneling microscope can be switched from a broad emission spectrum, revealing the plasmonic modes of the cavity, to a narrow band emission, displaying only the excitonic states of the C₆₀ molecules by changing the bias voltage applied to the junction. Interestingly, excitonic emission dominates the spectra in the high-voltage region in which the simultaneously acquired inelastic rate is low, demonstrating that the excitons cannot be created by an inelastic tunnel process. These results point toward new possible mechanisms for tunnel electroluminescence of quantum emitters and offer new avenues to develop electrically tunable nanoscale light sources.

Evidence of exciton-libron coupling in chirally adsorbed single molecules

Interplay between motion of nuclei and excitations has an important role in molecular photophysics of natural and artificial structures. Here we provide a detailed analysis of coupling between quantized librational modes (librons) and charged excited states (trions) on single phthalocyanine dyes adsorbed on a surface. By means of tip-induced electroluminescence performed with a scanning probe microscope, we identify libronic signatures in spectra of chirally adsorbed phthalocyanines and find that these signatures are absent from spectra of symmetrically adsorbed species. We create a model of the libronic coupling based on the Franck-Condon principle to simulate the spectral features. Experimentally measured librational spectra match very well the theoretically calculated librational eigenenergies and peak intensities (Franck-Condon factors). Moreover, the comparison reveals an unexpected depopulation channel for the zero libron of the excited state that can be effectively controlled by tuning the size of the nanocavity. Our results showcase the possibility of characterizing the dynamics of molecules by their low-energy molecular modes using µeV-resolved tip-enhanced spectroscopy.

Vibronic coupling in molecules plays an essential role in photophysics. Here, the authors observe optical fingerprints of the coupling between librational states and charged excited states in a single phthalocyanine molecule chirally absorbed on a surface.

Plasmonic phenomena in molecular junctions: principles and applications

Molecular junctions are building blocks for constructing future nanoelectronic devices that enable the investigation of a broad range of electronic transport properties within nanoscale regions. Crossing both the nanoscopic and mesoscopic length scales, plasmonics lies at the intersection of the macroscopic photonics and nanoelectronics, owing to their capability of confining light to dimensions far below the diffraction limit. Research activities on plasmonic phenomena in molecular electronics started around 2010, and feedback between plasmons and molecular junctions has increased over the past years. These efforts can provide new insights into the near-field interaction and the corresponding tunability in properties, as well as resultant plasmon-based molecular devices. This Review presents the latest advancements of plasmonic resonances in molecular junctions and details the progress in plasmon excitation and plasmon coupling. We also highlight emerging experimental approaches to unravel the mechanisms behind the various types of light-matter interactions at molecular length scales, where quantum effects come into play. Finally, we discuss the potential of these plasmonic-electronic hybrid systems across various future applications, including sensing, photocatalysis, molecular trapping and active control of molecular switches.

First-Principles Nonequilibrium Green's Function Approach to Energy Conversion in Nanoscale Optoelectronics

Understanding photon-electron conversion on the nanoscale is essential for future innovations in nano-optoelectronics. In this article, based on nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) formalism, we develop a quantum-mechanical method for modeling energy conversion in nanoscale optoelectronic devices. The method allows us to study photoinduced charge transport and electroluminescence processes in realistic devices. First, we investigate the electroluminescence properties of a two-level model with two different treatments of inelastic scatterings. We show the regime where self-consistency between electron and photon is important for correct description of the inelastic scatterings. The method is then applied to model single-molecule junctions based on the density-functional tight-binding approach. The predicted emission spectra are found to be in very good agreement with experimental measurements. For nanostructured materials, the method is further applied to study the photoresponse of a two-dimensional graphene/graphite-C₃N₄ heterojunction photovoltaic device. The simulations demonstrate clearly the impact of atomistic details on the optoelectronic properties of nanodevices. This work provides a practical theoretical framework that can be applied to model and design realistic nanodevices.

Robust Tipless Positioning Device for Near-Field Investigations: Press and Roll Scan (PROscan)

Scanning probe microscopes scan and manipulate a sharp tip in the immediate vicinity of a sample surface. The limited bandwidth of the feedback mechanism used for stabilizing the separation between the tip and the sample makes the fragile nanoscopic tip very susceptible to mechanical instabilities. We propose, demonstrate, and characterize an alternative device based on bulging a thin substrate against a second substrate and rolling them with respect to each other. We showcase the power of this method by placing gold nanoparticles and semiconductor quantum dots on the two opposite substrates and positioning them with nanometer precision to enhance the fluorescence intensity and emission rate. Furthermore, we exhibit the passive mechanical stability of the system over more than 1 h. Our design concept finds applications in a variety of other scientific and technological contexts, where nanoscopic features have to be positioned and kept near contact with each other.

Single-molecule nano-optoelectronics: insights from physics

Single-molecule optoelectronic devices promise a potential solution for miniaturization and functionalization of silicon-based microelectronic circuits in the future. For decades of its fast development, this field has made significant progress in the synthesis of optoelectronic materials, the fabrication of single-molecule devices and the realization of optoelectronic functions. On the other hand, single-molecule optoelectronic devices offer a reliable platform to investigate the intrinsic physical phenomena and regulation rules of matters at the single-molecule level. To further realize and regulate the optoelectronic functions toward practical applications, it is necessary to clarify the intrinsic physical mechanisms of single-molecule optoelectronic nanodevices. Here, we provide a timely review to survey the physical phenomena and laws involved in single-molecule optoelectronic materials and devices, including charge effects, spin effects, exciton effects, vibronic effects, structural and orbital effects. In particular, we will systematically summarize the basics of molecular optoelectronic materials, and the physical effects and manipulations of single-molecule optoelectronic nanodevices. In addition, fundamentals of single-molecule electronics, which are basic of single-molecule optoelectronics, can also be found in this review. At last, we tend to focus the discussion on the opportunities and challenges arising in the field of single-molecule optoelectronics, and propose further potential breakthroughs.

Wavelike electronic energy transfer in donor-acceptor molecular systems through quantum coherence

Quantum-coherent intermolecular energy transfer is believed to play a key role in light harvesting in photosynthesis and photovoltaics. So far, a direct, real-space demonstration of quantum coherence in donor-acceptor systems has been lacking because of the fragile quantum coherence in lossy molecular systems. Here, we precisely control the separations in well-defined donor-acceptor model systems and unveil a transition from incoherent to coherent electronic energy transfer. We monitor the fluorescence from the heterodimers with subnanometre resolution through scanning tunnelling microscopy induced luminescence. With decreasing intermolecular distance, the dipole coupling strength increases and two new emission peaks emerge: a low-intensity peak blueshifted from the donor emission, and an intense peak redshifted from the acceptor emission. Spatially resolved spectroscopic images of the redshifted emission exhibit a σ antibonding-like pattern and thus indicate a delocalized nature of the excitonic state over the whole heterodimer due to the in-phase superposition of molecular excited states. These observations suggest that the exciton can travel coherently through the whole heterodimer as a quantum-mechanical wavepacket. In our model system, the wavelike quantum-coherent transfer channel is three times more efficient than the incoherent channel.

Design and implementation of a device based on an off-axis parabolic mirror to perform luminescence experiments in a scanning tunneling microscope

We present the design, implementation, and illustrative results of a light collection/injection strategy based on an off-axis parabolic mirror collector for a low-temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM). This device allows us to perform STM induced Light Emission (STM-LE) and Cathodoluminescence (STM-CL) experiments and in situ Photoluminescence (PL) and Raman spectroscopy as complementary techniques. Considering the Étendue conservation and using an off-axis parabolic mirror, it is possible to design a light collection and injection system that displays 72% of collection efficiency (considering the hemisphere above the sample surface) while maintaining high spectral resolution and minimizing signal loss. The performance of the STM is tested by atomically resolved images and scanning tunneling spectroscopy results on standard sample surfaces. The capabilities of our system are demonstrated by performing STM-LE on metallic surfaces and two-dimensional semiconducting samples, observing both plasmonic and excitonic emissions. In addition, we carried out in situ PL measurements on semiconducting monolayers and quantum dots and in situ Raman on graphite and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) samples. Additionally, STM-CL and PL were obtained on monolayer h-BN gathering luminescence spectra that are typically associated with intragap states related to carbon defects. The results show that the flexible and efficient light injection and collection device based on an off-axis parabolic mirror is a powerful tool to study several types of nanostructures with multiple spectroscopic techniques in correlation with their morphology at the atomic scale and electronic structure.

Orbital-resolved visualization of single-molecule photocurrent channels

Given its central role in utilizing light energy, photoinduced electron transfer (PET) from an excited molecule has been widely studied^1-6. However, even though microscopic photocurrent measurement methods^7-11 have made it possible to correlate the efficiency of the process with local features, spatial resolution has been insufficient to resolve it at the molecular level. Recent work has, however, shown that single molecules can be efficiently excited and probed when combining a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) with localized plasmon fields driven by a tunable laser^12,13. Here we use that approach to directly visualize with atomic-scale resolution the photocurrent channels through the molecular orbitals of a single free-base phthalocyanine (FBPc) molecule, by detecting electrons from its first excited state tunnelling through the STM tip. We find that the direction and the spatial distribution of the photocurrent depend sensitively on the bias voltage, and detect counter-flowing photocurrent channels even at a voltage where the averaged photocurrent is near zero. Moreover, we see evidence of competition between PET and photoluminescence¹², and find that we can control whether the excited molecule primarily relaxes through PET or photoluminescence by positioning the STM tip with three-dimensional, atomic precision. These observations suggest that specific photocurrent channels can be promoted or suppressed by tuning the coupling to excited-state molecular orbitals, and thus provide new perspectives for improving energy-conversion efficiencies by atomic-scale electronic and geometric engineering of molecular interfaces.

Vibrationally Resolved Absorption and Luminescence Spectra of Mass-Selected Free-Base and Zinc Phthalocyanine Radical Cations Isolated in Solid Ne

We report the first vibrationally well-resolved absorption and laser-induced fluorescence spectra of the radical cations of free-base phthalocyanine (H₂Pc⁺) and zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc⁺) isolated in 5 K neon matrices and compare them to the spectral properties of the corresponding neutrals. The samples were generated by low-energy deposition of the mass-selected ions. The spectra are also discussed in terms of time-dependent density functional theory calculations and compared with recently reported scanning tunneling microscopy-induced single-molecule luminescence of the same species adsorbed on NaCl-covered Au(111) or Ag(111) single crystal supports.

Real Space Visualization of Entangled Excitonic States in Charged Molecular Assemblies

Entanglement of excitons holds great promise for the future of quantum computing, which would use individual molecular dyes as building blocks of their circuitry. Studying entangled excitonic eigenstates emerging in coupled molecular assemblies in the near-field with submolecular resolution has the potential to bring insight into the photophysics of these fascinating quantum phenomena. In contrast to far-field spectroscopies, near-field spectroscopic mapping permits direct identification of the individual eigenmodes, type of exciton coupling, including excited states otherwise inaccessible in the far field (dark states). Here we combine tip-enhanced spectromicroscopy with atomic force microscopy to inspect delocalized single-exciton states of charged molecular assemblies engineered from individual perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) molecules. Hyperspectral mapping of the eigenstates and comparison with calculated many-body optical transitions reveals a second low-lying excited state of the anion monomers and its role in the exciton entanglement within the assemblies. We demonstrate control over the exciton coupling by switching the assembly charge states. Our results reveal the possibility of tailoring excitonic properties of organic dye aggregates for advanced functionalities and establish the methodology to address them individually at the nanoscale.

Optical Images of Molecular Vibronic Couplings from Tip-Enhanced Fluorescence Excitation Spectroscopy

Tip-based photoemission spectroscopic techniques have now achieved subnanometer resolution that allows visualization of the chemical structure and even the ground-state vibrational modes of a single molecule. However, the ability to visualize the interplay between electronic and nuclear motions of excited states, i.e., vibronic couplings, is yet to be explored. Herein, we theoretically propose a new technique, namely, tip-enhanced fluorescence excitation (TEFE). TEFE takes advantage of the highly confined plasmonic field and thus can offer a possibility to directly visualize the vibronic effect of a single molecule in real space for arbitrary excited states in a given energy window. Numerical simulations for a single porphine molecule confirm that vibronic couplings originating from Herzberg-Teller (HT) active modes can be visually identified. TEFE further enables high-order vibrational transitions that are normally suppressed in the other plasmon-based processes. Images of the combination vibrational transitions have the same pattern as that of their parental HT active mode's fundamental transition, providing a direct protocol for measurements of the activity of Franck-Condon modes of selected excited states. These findings strongly suggest that TEFE is a powerful strategy to identify the involvement of molecular moieties in the complicated electron-nuclear interactions of the excited states at the single-molecule level.

Lightwave-driven scanning tunnelling spectroscopy of atomically precise graphene nanoribbons

Atomically precise electronics operating at optical frequencies require tools that can characterize them on their intrinsic length and time scales to guide device design. Lightwave-driven scanning tunnelling microscopy is a promising technique towards this purpose. It achieves simultaneous sub-ångström and sub-picosecond spatio-temporal resolution through ultrafast coherent control by single-cycle field transients that are coupled to the scanning probe tip from free space. Here, we utilize lightwave-driven terahertz scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy to investigate atomically precise seven-atom-wide armchair graphene nanoribbons on a gold surface at ultralow tip heights, unveiling highly localized wavefunctions that are inaccessible by conventional scanning tunnelling microscopy. Tomographic imaging of their electron densities reveals vertical decays that depend sensitively on wavefunction and lateral position. Lightwave-driven scanning tunnelling spectroscopy on the ångström scale paves the way for ultrafast measurements of wavefunction dynamics in atomically precise nanostructures and future optoelectronic devices based on locally tailored electronic properties.

Near-field scanning optical microscopy of molecular aggregates: The role of light polarization

We consider theoretically near-field absorption spectra of molecular aggregates stemming from a scattering scanning near-field optical microscopy type setup. Our focus is on the dependence on the direction and polarization of the incoming electromagnetic radiation, which induces a Hertz dipole with a specific orientation at the tip-apex. Within a simple description, which is based on the eigenstates of the aggregate, absorption spectra are calculated for the near field created by this dipole. We find that the spatial patterns of the spectra have a strong dependence on the orientation of this tip-dipole, which can be understood by considering three basic functions that only depend on the arrangement of the aggregate and the molecule tip distance, but not on the orientation of the tip-dipole. This allows direct access to spatial dependence of the aggregate eigenstates. For the important cases of one- and two-dimensional systems with parallel molecules, we discuss these spectra in detail. The simple numerically efficient approach is validated by a more detailed description where the incoming radiation and the interaction between the tip and molecules are explicitly taken into account.

Atomic-Scale Structural Fluctuations of a Plasmonic Cavity

Optical spectromicroscopies, which can reach atomic resolution due to plasmonic enhancement, are perturbed by spontaneous intensity modifications. Here, we study such fluctuations in plasmonic electroluminescence at the single-atom limit profiting from the precision of a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope. First, we investigate the influence of a controlled single-atom transfer from the tip to the sample on the plasmonic properties of the junction. Next, we form a well-defined atomic contact of several quanta of conductance. In contact, we observe changes of the electroluminescence intensity that can be assigned to spontaneous modifications of electronic conductance, plasmonic excitation, and optical antenna properties all originating from minute atomic rearrangements at or near the contact. Our observations are relevant for the understanding of processes leading to spontaneous intensity variations in plasmon-enhanced atomic-scale spectroscopies such as intensity blinking in picocavities.

Electronic Temperature and Two-Electron Processes in Overbias Plasmonic Emission from Tunnel Junctions

The accurate determination of electronic temperatures in metallic nanostructures is essential for many technological applications, like plasmon-enhanced catalysis or lithographic nanofabrication procedures. In this Letter, we demonstrate that the electronic temperature can be accurately measured by the shape of the tunnel electroluminescence emission edge in tunnel plasmonic nanocavities, which follows a universal thermal distribution with the bias voltage as the chemical potential of the photon population. A significant deviation between electronic and lattice temperatures is found below 30 K for tunnel currents larger than 15 nA. This deviation is rationalized as the result of a two-electron process in which the second electron excites plasmon modes with an energy distribution that reflects the higher temperature following the first tunneling event. These results dispel a long-standing controversy on the nature of overbias emission in tunnel junctions and adds a new method for the determination of electronic temperatures and quasiparticle dynamics.

Synthesis and Surface Behaviour of NDI Chromophores Mounted on a Tripodal Scaffold: Towards Self-Decoupled Chromophores for Single-Molecule Electroluminescence

This paper reports the efficient synthesis, absorption and emission spectra, and the electrochemical properties of a series of 2,6-disubstituted naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxdiimide (NDI) tripodal molecules with thioacetate anchors for their surface investigations. Our studies showed that, in particular, the pyrrolidinyl group with its strong electron-donating properties enhanced the fluorescence of such core-substituted NDI chromophores and caused a significant bathochromic shift in the absorption spectrum with a correspondingly narrowed bandgap of 1.94 eV. Cyclic voltammetry showed the redox properties of NDIs to be influenced by core substituents. The strong electron-donating character of pyrrolidine substituents results in rather high HOMO and LUMO levels of -5.31 and -3.37 eV when compared with the parental unsubstituted NDI. UHV-STM measurements of a sub-monolayer of the rigid tripodal NDI chromophores spray deposited on Au(111) show that these molecules mainly tend to adsorb flat in a pairwise fashion on the surface and form unordered films. However, the STML experiments also revealed a few molecular clusters, which might consist of upright oriented molecules protruding from the molecular island and show electroluminescence photon spectra with high electroluminescence yields of up to 6×10-3 . These results demonstrate the promising potential of the NDI tripodal chromophores for the fabrication of molecular devices profiting from optical features of the molecular layer.

Fluorescence of CoTPP Mediated by the Plasmon-Exciton Coupling Effect in the Tunneling Junction

CoTPP, as a common hypsoporphyrin, is usually not a luminescent molecule because of the open-shell Co ion. In this paper, well-defined multilayer CoTPP molecules self-assembled on Au(111) surface are characterized layer by layer with scanning tunneling microscope (STM) induced luminescence. By using the highly localized STM tunneling current, we not only investigate the influence of bias polarity on the amplitude of distinct plasmonic emission resulted from the interaction between the metal substrate and the metal ions but also first obtain the light emission from the hypsoporphyrins in the tunneling junction. The density-matrix method and the combined approach of classical electrodynamics and first-principles calculation are used to explain the mechanism of the light emission. These findings may expand the underlying physics of plasmon-exciton coupling in STM nanocavity and reveal a new possible path to overcome the fluorescent potential of hypsoporphyrins by the intense localized electric fields.

Gigahertz Frame Rate Imaging of Charge-Injection Dynamics in a Molecular Light Source

Light sources on the scale of single molecules can be addressed and characterized at their proper sub-nanometer scale by scanning tunneling microscopy-induced luminescence (STML). Such a source can be driven by defined short charge pulses while the luminescence is detected with sub-nanosecond resolution. We introduce an approach to concurrently image the molecular emitter, which is based on an individual defect, with its local environment along with its luminescence dynamics at a resolution of a billion frames per second. The observed dynamics can be assigned to the single electron capture occurring in the low-nanosecond regime. While the emitter's location on the surface remains fixed, the scanning of the tip modifies the energy landscape for charge injection into the defect. The principle of measurement is extendable to fundamental processes beyond charge transfer, like exciton diffusion.

Influence of an atomistic protrusion at the tip apex on enhancing molecular emission in tunnel junctions: A theoretical study

Light emission from the gap of a scanning tunneling microscope can be used to investigate many optoelectronic processes at the single-molecule level and to gain insight into the fundamental photophysical mechanisms involved. One important issue is how to improve the quantum efficiency of quantum emitters in the nanometer-sized metallic gap so that molecule-specific emission can be clearly observed. Here, using electromagnetic simulations, we systematically investigate the influence of an atomic-scale protrusion at the tip apex on the emission properties of a point dipole in the plasmonic nanocavity. We found that such an atomistic protrusion can induce strong and spatially highly confined electric fields, thus increasing the quantum efficiency of molecular fluorescence over two orders of magnitude even when its dipole is oriented parallel to the metal surface, a situation occurring in most realistic single-molecule electroluminescence experiments. In addition, our theoretical simulations indicate that due to the lightning rod effect induced by the protrusion in a plasmonic nanocavity, the quantum efficiency increases monotonically as the tip approaches the dipole to the point of contact, instead of being quenched, thus explaining previous experimental observations with ever-enhancing fluorescence. Furthermore, we also examine in detail how the protrusion radius, height, and material affect the protrusion-induced emission enhancement. These results are believed to be instructive for further studies on the optoelectronic properties of single molecules in tip-based plasmonic nanocavities.

Probing Molecular Excited States by Atomic Force Microscopy

By employing single charge injections with an atomic force microscope, we investigated redox reactions of a molecule on a multilayer insulating film. First, we charged the molecule positively by attaching a single hole. Then we neutralized it by attaching an electron and observed three channels for the neutralization. We rationalize that the three channels correspond to transitions to the neutral ground state, to the lowest energy triplet excited states and to the lowest energy singlet excited states. By single-electron tunneling spectroscopy we measured the energy differences between the transitions obtaining triplet and singlet excited state energies. The experimental values are compared with density functional theory calculations of the excited state energies. Our results show that molecules in excited states can be prepared and that energies of optical gaps can be quantified by controlled single-charge injections. Our work demonstrates the access to, and provides insight into, ubiquitous electron-attachment processes related to excited-state transitions important in electron transfer and molecular optoelectronics phenomena on surfaces.

Exciton-Trion Conversion Dynamics in a Single Molecule

Charged optical excitations (trions) generated by charge carrier injection are crucial for emerging optoelectronic technologies as they can be produced and manipulated by electric fields. Trions and neutral excitons can be efficiently induced in single molecules by means of tip-enhanced spectromicroscopic techniques. However, little is known of the exciton-trion dynamics at single molecule level as this requires methods permitting simultaneous subnanometer and subnanosecond characterization. Here, we investigate exciton-trion dynamics by phase fluorometry, combining radio frequency modulated scanning tunnelling luminescence with time-resolved single photon detection. We generate excitons and trions in single Zinc Phthalocyanine (ZnPc) molecules on NaCl/Ag(111), and trace the evolution of the system in the picosecond range. We explore the dependence of effective lifetimes on bias voltage and describe the conversion mechanism from neutral excitons to trions, via charge capture, as the primary pathway to trion formation. We corroborate the dynamics of the system by a causally deterministic four-state model.

Optical Excitations with Electron Beams: Challenges and Opportunities

Free electron beams such as those employed in electron microscopes have evolved into powerful tools to investigate photonic nanostructures with an unrivaled combination of spatial and spectral precision through the analysis of electron energy losses and cathodoluminescence light emission. In combination with ultrafast optics, the emerging field of ultrafast electron microscopy utilizes synchronized femtosecond electron and light pulses that are aimed at the sampled structures, holding the promise to bring simultaneous sub-Å-sub-fs-sub-meV space-time-energy resolution to the study of material and optical-field dynamics. In addition, these advances enable the manipulation of the wave function of individual free electrons in unprecedented ways, opening sound prospects to probe and control quantum excitations at the nanoscale. Here, we provide an overview of photonics research based on free electrons, supplemented by original theoretical insights and discussion of several stimulating challenges and opportunities. In particular, we show that the excitation probability by a single electron is independent of its wave function, apart from a classical average over the transverse beam density profile, whereas the probability for two or more modulated electrons depends on their relative spatial arrangement, thus reflecting the quantum nature of their interactions. We derive first-principles analytical expressions that embody these results and have general validity for arbitrarily shaped electrons and any type of electron-sample interaction. We conclude with some perspectives on various exciting directions that include disruptive approaches to noninvasive spectroscopy and microscopy, the possibility of sampling the nonlinear optical response at the nanoscale, the manipulation of the density matrices associated with free electrons and optical sample modes, and appealing applications in optical modulation of electron beams, all of which could potentially revolutionize the use of free electrons in photonics.

Probing intramolecular vibronic coupling through vibronic-state imaging

Vibronic coupling is a central issue in molecular spectroscopy. Here we investigate vibronic coupling within a single pentacene molecule in real space by imaging the spatial distribution of single-molecule electroluminescence via highly localized excitation of tunneling electrons in a controlled plasmonic junction. The observed two-spot orientation for certain vibronic-state imaging is found to be evidently different from the purely electronic 0–0 transition, rotated by 90°, which reflects the change in the transition dipole orientation from along the molecular short axis to the long axis. Such a change reveals the occurrence of strong vibronic coupling associated with a large Herzberg–Teller contribution, going beyond the conventional Franck–Condon picture. The emergence of large vibration-induced transition charges oscillating along the long axis is found to originate from the strong dynamic perturbation of the anti-symmetric vibration on those carbon atoms with large transition density populations during electronic transitions.

Vibronic coupling is a key feature of molecular electronic transitions, but its visualization in real space is an experimental challenge. Here the authors, using scanning tunneling microscopy induced luminescence, resolve the effect of vibronic coupling with different modes on the electron distributions in real space in a single pentacene molecule.

Influence of nonlocal dielectric response on the Au tip-enhanced fluorescence effect

Tip-enhanced fluorescence (TEF) with ultra-high detection sensitivity and spatial resolution has been a powerful characterization technique in the study of surface science and life science. Herein, a systematically theoretical investigation in the visible range had been performed to study TEF properties of a single molecule located inside a nanogap formed by Au tip and substrate. In the strong localized surface plasmon coupling effect, the contribution of nonlocal dielectric response to the fluorescence quantum yield as well as radiative and energy dissipated decay rates were calculated. It is found that the nonlocal dielectric effects become comparable to the radiative and energy dissipated decay rates with the increasing of the tip-molecule distance, as a result, the nonlocal dielectric effect significantly suppresses the fluorescence process. The huge excitation enhancement at the shorter tip-molecule distance can efficiently compensate the low quantum yield, leading to the great fluorescence enhancement. The results show that the maximum enhancement obtained from the calculations can reach as high as four orders of magnitude by optimizing the tip-molecule distance. These results are not only helpful to our understanding of the TEF mechanism but also valuable for its further applications.

Quantum Algorithm for Simulating Single-Molecule Electron Transport

An accurate description of electron transport at a molecular level requires a precise treatment of quantum effects. These effects play a crucial role in determining the electron transport properties of single molecules, which can be challenging to simulate classically. Here we introduce a quantum algorithm to efficiently calculate electronic current through single-molecule junctions in the weak-coupling regime. We show that a quantum computer programmed to simulate vibronic transitions between different charge states of a molecule can be used to compute electron-transfer rates and electronic current. In the harmonic approximation, the algorithm can be implemented using Gaussian boson sampling devices, which are a near-term platform for photonic quantum computing. We apply the algorithm to simulate the current and conductance of a magnesium porphine molecule. The algorithm provides a means for better understanding the mechanism of electron transport at a molecular level, which paves the way for building practical molecular electronic devices.

What can single-molecule Fano resonance tell?

In this work, we showcase applications of single-molecule Fano resonance (SMFR) measurements beyond the determination of molecular excitonic energy and associated dipole orientation. We use the SMFR measurement to probe the local influence of a man-made single chlorine vacancy on the molecular transition of a single zinc phthalocyanine, which clearly reveals the lifting-up of the double degeneracy of the excited states due to defect-induced configurational changes. Furthermore, time-trace SMFR measurements at different excitation voltages are used to track the tautomerization process in a free-base phthalocyanine. Different behaviors in switching between two inner-hydrogen configurations are observed with decreasing voltages, which helps to reveal the underlying tautomerization mechanism involving both the molecular electronic excited states and vibrational excited states in the ground state.

Scanning Tunneling Microscopy-Induced Light Emission and I(V) Study of Optical Near-Field Properties of Single Plasmonic Nanoantennas

Electrically driven plasmonic nanoantennas can be integrated as a local source of the optical signal of advanced photonic schemes for on-chip data processing. The inelastic electron tunneling provides the photon generation or launch of surface plasmon waves. This process can be enhanced by the local density of optical states of nanoantennas. In this paper, we used scanning tunnel microscopy-induced light emission to probe the local optoelectronic properties of single gold nanodiscs. The electromagnetic field distribution in the vicinity of plasmonic structures was investigated with high spatial resolution. The obtained photon maps reveal the nonuniform distribution of electromagnetic near-fields, which is consistent with nanoantenna optical modes. Also, the analysis of derived I(V) curves showed a direct correlation between the nanoantenna optical states and the appearance of features on current-voltage characteristics.

Too Cool for Blackbody Radiation: Overbias Photon Emission in Ambient STM Due to Multielectron Processes

Light emission from tunnel junctions are a potential photon source for nanophotonic applications. Surprisingly, the photons emitted can have energies exceeding the energy supplied to the electrons by the bias. Three mechanisms for generating these so-called overbias photons have been proposed, but the relationship between these mechanisms has not been clarified. In this work, we argue that multielectron processes provide the best framework for understanding overbias light emission in tunnel junctions. Experimentally, we demonstrate for the first time that the superlinear dependence of emission on conductance predicted by this theory is robust to the temperature of the tunnel junction, indicating that tunnel junctions are a promising candidate for electrically driven broadband photon sources.

Boosting Light Emission from Single Hydrogen Phthalocyanine Molecules by Charging

Interest in electroluminescence of single molecules is stimulated by the prospect of possible applications in novel light emitting devices. Recent studies provide valuable insights into the mechanisms leading to single molecule electroluminescence. Concrete information on how to boost the intensity of the emitted light, however, is rare. By combining scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and quantum chemical calculations, we show that the light emission efficiencies of an individual hydrogen-phthalocyanine molecule can be increased by a factor of ≈19 upon charging. This boost in intensity can be explained by the development of a vertical dipole moment normal to the substrate facilitating out-coupling of the local excitation to the far field. As this effect is not related to the specific nature of hydrogen-phthalocyanine, it opens up a general way to increase light emission from molecular junctions.

Electrically driven photon emission from individual atomic defects in monolayer WS2

Quantum dot-like single-photon sources in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) exhibit appealing quantum optical properties but lack a well-defined atomic structure and are subject to large spectral variability. Here, we demonstrate electrically stimulated photon emission from individual atomic defects in monolayer WS2 and directly correlate the emission with the local atomic and electronic structure. Radiative transitions are locally excited by sequential inelastic electron tunneling from a metallic tip into selected discrete defect states in the WS2 bandgap. Coupling to the optical far field is mediated by tip plasmons, which transduce the excess energy into a single photon. The applied tip-sample voltage determines the transition energy. Atomically resolved emission maps of individual point defects closely resemble electronic defect orbitals, the final states of the optical transitions. Inelastic charge carrier injection into localized defect states of two-dimensional materials provides a powerful platform for electrically driven, broadly tunable, atomic-scale single-photon sources.

Optical scanning tunneling microscopy based chemical imaging and spectroscopy

Through coupling optical processes with the scanning tunneling microscope (STM), single-molecule chemistry and physics have been investigated at the ultimate spatial and temporal limit. Electrons and photons can be used to drive interactions and reactions in chemical systems and simultaneously probe their characteristics and consequences. In this review we introduce and review methods to couple optical imaging and spectroscopy with scanning tunneling microscopy. The integration of the STM and optical spectroscopy provides new insights into individual molecular adsorbates, surface-supported molecular assemblies, and two-dimensional materials with subnanoscale resolution, enabling the fundamental study of chemistry at the spatial and temporal limit. The inelastic scattering of photons by molecules and materials, that results in unique and sensitive vibrational fingerprints, will be considered with tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. STM-induced luminescence examines the intrinsic luminescence of organic adsorbates and their energy transfer and charge transfer processes with their surroundings. We also provide a survey of recent efforts to probe the dynamics of optical excitation at the molecular level with scanning tunneling microscopy in the context of light-induced photophysical and photochemical transformations.

Mechano-Optical Switching of a Single Molecule with Doublet Emission

The ability to control the emission from single-molecule quantum emitters is an important step toward their implementation in optoelectronic technology. Phthalocyanine and derived metal complexes on thin insulating layers studied by scanning tunneling microscope-induced luminescence (STML) offer an excellent playground for tuning their excitonic and electronic states by Coulomb interaction and to showcase their high environmental sensitivity. Copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) has an open-shell electronic structure, and its lowest-energy exciton is a doublet, which brings interesting prospects in its application for optospintronic devices. Here, we demonstrate that the excitonic state of a single CuPc molecule can be reproducibly switched by atomic-scale manipulations permitting precise positioning of the molecule on the NaCl ionic crystal lattice. Using a combination of STML, AFM, and ab initio calculations, we show the modulation of electronic and optical bandgaps and the exciton binding energy in CuPc by tens of meV. We explain this effect by spatially dependent Coulomb interaction occurring at the molecule-insulator interface, which tunes the local dielectric environment of the emitter.

Tunneling-current-induced local excitonic luminescence in p-doped WSe2 monolayers

We have studied the excitonic properties of exfoliated tungsten diselenide (WSe2) monolayers transferred to gold substrates using the tunneling current in a Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) operated in air to excite the light emission locally. In obtained spectra, emission energies are independent of the applied bias voltage and resemble photoluminescence (PL) results, indicating that, in both cases, the light emission is due to neutral and charged exciton recombination. Interestingly, the electron injection rate, that is, the tunneling current, can be used to control the ratio of charged to neutral exciton emission. The obtained quantum yield in the transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) is ∼5 × 10-7 photons per electron. The proposed excitation mechanism is the direct injection of carriers into the conduction band. The monolayer WSe2 presents bright and dark defects spotted by STM images performed under UHV. STS confirms the sample as p-doped, possibly as a net result of the observed defects. The presence of an interfacial water layer decouples the monolayer from the gold support and allows excitonic emission from the WSe2 monolayer. The creation of a water layer is an inherent feature of the sample transferring process due to the ubiquitous air moisture. Consequently, vacuum thermal annealing, which removes the water layer, quenches excitonic luminescence from the TMD. The tunneling current can locally displace water molecules leading to excitonic emission quenching and to plasmonic emission due to the gold substrate. The present findings extend the use and the understanding of STM induced light emission (STM-LE) on semiconducting TMDs to probe exciton emission and dynamics with high spatial resolution.
