Progress in Research into 2D Graphdiyne-Based Materials

0D/2D heterojunction constructed by Ag2S quantum dots anchored on graphdiyne (g-CnH2n-2) nanosheets for wide spectrum photocatalytic H2 evolution

Precisely crafting heterojunctions for efficient charge separation is a major obstacle in the realm of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. A 0D/2D heterojunction was successfully fabricated by anchoring Ag2S quantum dots (Ag2S QDs) onto graphdiyne (GDY) nanosheets (Ag2S QDs/GDY) using a straightforward physical mixing technique. This unique structure allows for excellent contact between GDY and Ag2S QDs, thereby enhancing the rate of charge transfer. The light absorption capabilities of Ag2S QDs/GDY extend up to 1200 nm, enabling strong absorption of light, including infrared. Through DFT calculations and in-situ XPS analysis, it was demonstrated that incorporating Ag2S QDs onto GDY effectively modulates the electronic structure, promotes an internal electric field, and facilitates directional electron transfer. This directed electron transfer enhances the utilization of electrons by GDY and Ag2S QDs, with the added benefit of Ag2S QDs serving as electron reservoirs for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. A 7 %Ag2S QDs/GDY composite exhibited impressive efficiency and stable performance in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (2418 μmol g-1 h-1), which is much higher than that of GDY and Ag2S QDs. This study conclusively demonstrates that the 0D/2D heterojunction formed by GDY and Ag2S QDs can establish high-quality contact and efficient charge transfer, ultimately enhancing photocatalytic performance.

Unconventional Band Structure via Combined Molecular Orbital and Lattice Symmetries in a Surface-Confined Metallated Graphdiyne Sheet

Graphyne (GY) and graphdiyne (GDY)-based monolayers represent the next generation 2D carbon-rich materials with tunable structures and properties surpassing those of graphene. However, the detection of band formation in atomically thin GY/GDY analogues has been challenging, as both long-range order and atomic precision have to be fulfilled in the system. The present work reports direct evidence of band formation in on-surface synthesized metallated Ag-GDY sheets with mesoscopic (≈1 µm) regularity. Employing scanning tunneling and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopies, energy-dependent transitions of real-space electronic states above the Fermi level and formation of the valence band are respectively observed. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations corroborate the observations and reveal that doubly degenerate frontier molecular orbitals on a honeycomb lattice give rise to flat, Dirac and Kagome bands close to the Fermi level. DFT modeling also indicates an intrinsic band gap for the pristine sheet material, which is retained for a bilayer with h-BN, whereas adsorption-induced in-gap electronic states evolve at the synthesis platform with Ag-GDY decorating the (111) facet of silver. These results illustrate the tremendous potential for engineering novel band structures via molecular orbital and lattice symmetries in atomically precise 2D carbon materials.

Implementation of π-π interaction in AuNPs@GDY to boost the bioelectrocatalysis in enzymatic biofuel cells

The main challenges (sluggish electron transfer, low energy density) hinder the future application of enzymatic biofuel cells (EBFCs), which urgent to take effective measures to solve these issues. In this work, a composite of Au nanoparticles decorated graphdiyne (AuNPs@GDY) is fabricated and employed as the carrier of enzyme (G6PDH), and a mechanism based on π-π interaction of electron transfer is proposed to understand bioelectrocatalysis processes. The results show that the AuNPs@GDY composite exhibits the highest current density among the three materials (GDY, AuNPs, and AuNPs@GDY), which is 3.4 times higher than that of GDY and 2.5 times higher than that of AuNPs. Furthermore, the results reveal that the AuNPs could increase the loading of enzymes and provide more active site for reaction, while GDY provides highly π-conjugated structure and unique sp/sp2-hybridized linkages interface. This work provides new insights to explore a theoretical basis for the development of more efficient bioelectrocatalytic systems.

Thermoelectric Properties Regulated by Quantum Size Effects in Quasi-One-Dimensional γ-Graphdiyne Nanoribbons

Using density functional theory combined with the first principles calculation method of non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF-DFT), we studied the thermoelectric (TE) characteristics of one-dimensional γ-graphdiyne nanoribbons (γ-GDYNRs). The study found that the thermal conductivity of γ-GDYNRs has obvious anisotropy. At the same temperature and geometrical size, the lattice thermal conductivity of zigzag-edged γ-graphdiyne nanoribbons (γ-ZGDYNRs) is much lower than that of armchair-edged γ-graphdiyne nanoribbons (γ-AGDYNRs). We disclose the underlying mechanism for this intrinsic orientation. That is, γ-AGDYNRs have more phonon dispersion over the entire frequency range. Furthermore, the orientation dependence increases when the width of the γ-GDYNRs decreases. These excellent TE properties allow armchair-edged γ-graphdiyne nanoribbons with a planar width of 1.639 nm (γ-Z(2)GDYNRs) to have a higher power factor and lower thermal conductivity, ultimately resulting in a significantly higher TE conversion rate than other γ-GDYNR structures.

Island-Like Heterogeneous Interface Generating Tandem Toroidal Built-In Electric Field for Efficient Potassium Ions Diffusion

For large-size potassium accommodation, heterostructure usually suffers severe delamination and exfoliation at the interfaces due to different volume expansion of two-phase during charge/discharge process, resulting in the deconstruction of heterostructures and shortened lifespan of batteries. Here, an innovative strategy is proposed through constructing a microscopic heterostructure system containing copper quantum dots (Cu QDs) highly dispersed in the triphenyl-substituted triazine graphdiyne (TPTG) substrates (TPTG@CuQDs) to solve this problem. The copper quantum dots are uniformly anchored on TPTG substrates, generating a myriad of island-like heterogeneous structures, together with tandem toroidal built-in electric field (BIEF) between every micro heterointerface. The island-like heterostructure endows both benefits of exposed contact interface and robust architecture. Generated tandem toroidal BIEF provides efficient transport pathways with lower energy barriers, reducing the diffusion resistance and facilitating the reaction kinetics of potassium ions. When used as anode, the TPTG@CuQDs exhibit highly reversible capacity and low-capacity degradation (≈0.01% over 5560 cycles at 1 A g-1). Moreover, the TPTG@CuQDs-based full cell delivers an outstanding reversible capacity of ≈110 mAh g-1 over 800 cycles at 1 A g-1. This quantum-scale heterointerface construction strategy offers a new approach toward stable heterostructure design for the application of metal ion batteries.

Self-Adaptive Graphdiyne/Sn Interface for High-Performance Sodium Storage

Efficiently reconciling the substantial volume strain with maintaining the stabilities of both interfacial protection and three-dimensional (3D) conductive networks is a scientific and technical challenge in developing tin-based anodes for sodium ion storage. To address this issue, a proof-of-concept self-adaptive protection for the Sn anode is designed, taking advantage of the arbitrary substrate growth of graphdiyne. This protective layer, employing a flexible chain doping strategy, combines the benefits of 2D graphdiyne and linear chain structures to achieve 2D mechanical stability, electronic and ion conductions, ion selectivity, adequate elongation, and flexibility. It establishes close contact with the Sn particles and can adapt to dynamic size changes while effectively facilitating both electronic and ion transports. It successfully mitigates the detrimental effects of particle pulverization and coarsening induced by large-volume changes. The as-obtained Sn electrodes demonstrate exceptional stability, enduring 1800 cycles at a high current density of 2.5 A g-1. This strategy promises to address the general issues associated with large-strain electrodes in next-generation of high-energy-density batteries.

Confined Growth of Highly Ordered Metal Atomic Arrays for Seawater Oxidation

Metal atom catalysts have been among the most important research objects due to their specific physical and chemical properties. However, precise control of the anchoring of metal atoms is still challenging to achieve. Cobalt and iridium atomic arrays formed sequentially ordered stable arrays in graphdiyne (GDY) triangular cavities depending on their intrinsic chemical properties and interactions. The success of this method was attributed to multifunctional integration of GDY, enabling selective growth from one to several atoms and various atomic densities. The bimetallic atom arrays show several advantages resulting from reducibility of acetylene bonds, space limiting effect, incomplete charge transfer between GDY and metal atoms, and sp-C hybridized triple bond skeleton. This well-designed system exhibits unprecedented oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance with a mass activity of 2.6 A mgcat. -1 at a low overpotential of 300 mV, which is 216.6 times higher than the state-of-the-art IrO2 catalyst, and long-term stability.

Observing Proton-Electron Mixed Conductivity in Graphdiyne

Mixed conducting materials with both ionic and electronic conductivities have gained prominence in emerging applications. However, exploring material with on-demand ionic and electronic conductivities remains challenging, primarily due to the lack of correlating macroscopic conductivity with atom-scale structure. Here, the correlation of proton-electron conductivity and atom-scale structure in graphdiyne is explored. Precisely adjusting the conjugated diynes and oxygenic functional groups in graphdiyne yields a tunable proton-electron conductivity on the order of 103. In addition, a wet-chemistry lithography technique for uniform preparation of graphdiyne on flexible substrates is provided. Utilizing the proton-electron conductivity and mechanical tolerance of graphdiyne, bimodal flexible devices serving as capacitive switches and resistive sensors are created. As a proof-of-concept, a breath-machine interface for sentence-based communication and self-nursing tasks with an accuracy of 98% is designed. This work represents an important step toward understanding the atom-scale structure-conductivity relationship and extending the applications of mixed conducting materials to assistive technology.

The Accurate Synthesis of a Multiscale Metallic Interface on Graphdiyne

The accurate construction of composite material systems containing graphdiyne (GDY) and other metallic materials has promoted the formation of innovative structures and practical applications in the fields of energy, catalysis, optoelectronics, and biomedicine. To fulfill the practical requirements, the precise formation of multiscale interfaces over a wide range, from single atoms to nanostructures, plays an important role in the optimization of the structural design and properties. The intrinsic correlations between the structure, synthesis process, characteristic properties, and device performance are systematically investigated. This review outlines the current research achievements regarding the controlled formation of multiscale metallic interfaces on GDY. Synthetic strategies for interface regulation, as well as the correlation between the structure and performance, are presented. Furthermore, innovative research ideas for the design and synthesis of functional metal-based materials loaded onto GDY-based substances are also provided, demonstrating the promising application potential of GDY-based materials.

Theoretical Prediction Leads to Synthesize GDY Supported InOx Quantum Dots for CO2 Reduction

The preparation of formic acid by direct reduction of carbon dioxide is an important basis for the future chemical industry and is of great significance. Due to the serious shortage of highly active and selective electrocatalysts leading to the development of direct reduction of carbon dioxide is limited. Herein the target catalysts with high CO2RR activity and selectivity were identified by integrating DFT calculations and high-throughput screening and by using graphdiyne (GDY) supported metal oxides quantum dots (QDs) as the ideal model. It is theoretically predicted that GDY supported indium oxide QDs (i.e., InOx/GDY) is a new heterostructure electrocatalyst candidate with optimal CO2RR performance. The interfacial electronic strong interactions effectively regulate the surface charge distribution of QDs and affect the adsorption/desorption behavior of HCOO* intermediate during CO2RR to achieve highly efficient CO2 conversion. Based on the predicted composition and structure, we synthesized the advanced catalytic system, and demonstrates superior CO2-to-HCOOH conversion performance. The study presents an effective strategy for rational design of highly efficient heterostructure electrocatalysts to promote green chemical production.

Unveiling the Potential of Covalent Organic Framework Electrocatalyst for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution

The potential for sustainable energy and carbon neutrality has expanded with the development of a highly active electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Covalent Organic Frameworks (COF) have recently garnered attention because of their enormous potential in a number of cutting-edge application sectors, such as gas storage, sensors, fuel cells, and active catalytic supports. A simple and effective COF constructed and integrated by post-alteration plasma modification facilitates high electrocatalytic OER activity under alkaline conditions. Variations in parameters such as voltage and treatment duration have been employed to enhance the factor that demonstrates high OER performance. The overpotential and Tafel slope are the lowest of all when using an optimized parameter, such as plasma treatment for 30 min utilizing 6 kV of voltage, PT-30 COF, measuring 390 mV at a current density of 10 mA.cm-2 and 69 mV.dec-1, respectively, as compared to 652 mV and 235 mV.dec-1 for the Pristine-COF. Our findings provide a method for broadening the scope by post-functionalizing the parent framework for effective water splitting.

A Unique Approach: Biomimetic Graphdiyne-Based Nanoplatform to Treat Prostate Cancer by Combining Cuproptosis and Enhanced Chemodynamic Therapy

Purpose

Current treatment approaches for Prostate cancer (PCa) often come with debilitating side effects and limited therapeutic outcomes. There is urgent need for an alternative effective and safe treatment for PCa.

Methods

We developed a nanoplatform to target prostate cancer cells based on graphdiyne (GDY) and a copper-based metal-organic framework (GDY-CuMOF), that carries the chemotherapy drug doxorubicin (DOX) for cancer treatment. Moreover, to provide GDY-CuMOF@DOX with homotypic targeting capability, we coated the PCa cell membrane (DU145 cell membrane, DCM) onto the surface of GDY-CuMOF@DOX, thus obtaining a biomimetic nanoplatform (DCM@GDY-CuMOF@DOX). The nanoplatform was characterized by using transmission electron microscope, atomic force microscope, X-ray diffraction, etc. Drug release behavior, antitumor effects in vivo and in vitro, and biosafety of the nanoplatform were evaluated.

Results

We found that GDY-CuMOF exhibited a remarkable capability to load DOX mainly through π-conjugation and pore adsorption, and it responsively released DOX and generated Cu+ in the presence of glutathione (GSH). In vivo experiments demonstrated that this nanoplatform exhibits remarkable cell-killing efficiency by generating lethal reactive oxygen species (ROS) and mediating cuproptosis. In addition, DCM@GDY-CuMOF@DOX effectively suppresses tumor growth in vivo without causing any apparent side effects.

Conclusion

The constructed DCM@GDY-CuMOF@DOX nanoplatform integrates tumor targeting, drug-responsive release and combination with cuproptosis and chemodynamic therapy, offering insights for further biomedical research on efficient PCa treatment.

2D-Mn2C12: An Optimal Electrocatalyst with Nonbonding Multiple Single Centers for CO2-to-CH4 Conversion

The CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising method that can both mitigate the greenhouse effect and generate valuable chemicals. The 2D-M2C12 with high-density transition metal single atoms is a potential catalyst for various catalytic reactions. Using an effective strategy, we screened 1s-Mn2C12 as the most promising electrocatalyst for the CO2RR in the newly reported 2D-M2C12 family. A low applied potential of -0.17 V was reported for the CO2-to-CH4 conversion. The relative weak adsorption of H atom and H2O in the potential range of -0.2 to -0.8 V, ensures the preferential adsorption of CO2 and the following production of CH4. The different loading amounts of Mn atoms on γ-graphyne (GY) were also investigated. The Mn atoms prefer doping in the nonadjacent triangular pores instead of the adjacent ones due to the repulsive forces between d-orbitals when the Mn loading is less than 32.3 wt % (5Mn). As the Mn concentration further increases, adjacent Mn atoms begin to appear, and the Mn@GY becomes metallic or half-metallic. The presence of four adjacent Mn atoms increases the d-band center of Mn@GY, particularly the dz2 center involved in CO2 adsorption, thereby enhancing the adsorption capacity for CO2. These findings indicate that 1s-Mn2C12 with high Mn atomic loadings is an excellent CO2RR electrocatalyst, and it provides new insights for designing efficient CO2RR electrocatalyst.

Self-Organized Gradually Single-Atom-Layer of Metal Osmium for an Unprecedented Hydrogen Production from Seawater

Atomic thick two-dimensional (2D) materials with exciting physical, chemical, and electronic properties are gaining increasing attention in next-generation science and technology, showing great promise in catalysis and energy science. However, the precise design and synthesis of efficient catalytic systems based on such materials still face many difficulties, especially in how to control the preparation of structurally determined, highly active, atomic-scale distribution of material systems. Here, we report that a highly active zerovalent osmium single-atom-layer with a thickness of single atom size has been successfully and controllably self-organized on the surface of 2D graphdiyne (GDY) material. Detailed characterizations showed that the incomplete charge transfer effect between the Os atoms and GDY not only stabilized the catalytic system but also improved the intrinsic activity, making the Gibbs free energy reach the best and resulting in remarkable performance with a small overpotential of 49 mV at 500 mA cm-2, large specific j0 of 18.6 mA cm-2, and turnover frequency of 3.89 H2 s-1 at 50 mV. In addition, the formation of sp-C-Os bonds guarantees the high long-term stability of 800 h at a large current density of 500 mA cm-2 in alkaline simulated seawater.

HsGDY 3D Framework-Encapsulated Cu2O Quantum Dots for High-Efficiency Energy Storage

Nanostructured electrode materials become a vital component for future electrode materials because of their short electron and ion transport distances for fast charge and discharge processes and sufficient space between particles for volume expansion. So, achieving a smaller size of the nanomaterial with stable structure and high electrode performance is always the pursuit. Herein, the hybrid electrode material system hydrogen-substituted graphdiyne (HsGDY)/Cu2O-quantum dots (QDs) composed of an active carbon substrate and vibrant metal oxide QD load was established by HsGDY and cuprous oxide. The HsGDY frame with conjugated structure not only delivers impressive capacity by a self-exchange mechanism but also characterizes a matrix to forge strong connections with numerous active Cu2O-QDs for the prevention of aggregation, leading to a homogeneous storage and transport of charge in a bulk material of crisscross structural pores. QD-based electrode materials would exhibit desired capacities by their large surface area, abundant active surface atoms, and the short diffusion pathway. The hybrid system of HsGDY/Cu2O-QDs delivers an ultrahigh capacity of 1230 mA h g-1 with loading density reaching up to 1 mg cm-2. In the meantime, the electrode exhibits a long cycle stability of over 8000 cycles. The synergistic effect endows the hybrid system electrode with an approximately theoretical energy density, suggesting the great potential of such carbon/QD hybrid material system applied for high-performance batteries.

Surface atom knockout for the active site exposure of alloy catalyst

The fine regulation of catalysts by the atomic-level removal of inactive atoms can promote the active site exposure for performance enhancement, whereas suffering from the difficulty in controllably removing atoms using current micro/nano-scale material fabrication technologies. Here, we developed a surface atom knockout method to promote the active site exposure in an alloy catalyst. Taking Cu3Pd alloy as an example, it refers to assemble a battery using Cu3Pd and Zn as cathode and anode, the charge process of which proceeds at about 1.1 V, equal to the theoretical potential difference between Cu2+/Cu and Zn2+/Zn, suggesting the electricity-driven dissolution of Cu atoms. The precise knockout of Cu atoms is confirmed by the linear relationship between the amount of the removed Cu atoms and the battery cumulative specific capacity, which is attributed to the inherent atom-electron-capacity correspondence. We observed the surface atom knockout process at different stages and studied the evolution of the chemical environment. The alloy catalyst achieves a higher current density for oxygen reduction reaction compared to the original alloy and Pt/C. This work provides an atomic fabrication method for material synthesis and regulation toward the wide applications in catalysis, energy, and others.

sp-Carbon-Conjugated Organic Polymer as Multifunctional Interfacial Layers for Ultra-Long Dendrite-Free Lithium Metal Batteries

Fatal issues in lithium metal anodes (LMA), such as detrimental lithium dendrites growth and fragile solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) during the Li plating/stripping process, often hinder the practical application of Li metal batteries (LMBs). Herein, cobalt-coordinated sp-carbon-conjugated organic polymer (Co-spc-COP) is constructed as the protective layer for regulating the interface stability of LMA. The unique synergistic beneficial effect of organic functional groups (C≡C linkage, C=N units and aromatic rings) and Co sites not only regulate the Li+ coordination environment and rearrange Li+ concentration to facilitate its transport by optimizing the electronic density, enhancing the compatibility with electrolyte interface and supplying "external magnetic driving strategy", but also strengthens the interfacial stiffness with high Young's modulus to better withstand the mechanical stress. These beneficial effects and relative underlying working mode and mechanism of uniform Li plating and rapid Li+ migration on the Co-spc-COP are also revealed by various in situ/ex situ experimental technologies and theory calculation. The Co-spc-COP-based cell delivers an extraordinary lifespan of 6600 h and ultrahigh capacity retention of 78.3 % (111.9 mAh g-1) after 1000 cycles at 1 C. This demonstrated synergistic strategy in Co-coordinated organic polymer may gain new insights to regulate the uniform and non-dendritic deposition/dissolution behaviors for highly stable LMBs.

A novel functionalized graphdiyne oxide membrane for efficient removal and rapid detection of mercury in water

In practice, efficient, rapid and simple removal of Hg(II) from water using nano adsorbents remains an extreme challenge at present. In this work, a novel Hg(II) adsorbent based on functionalized graphdiyne oxide (GDYO-3M) membrane was designed for the purpose of effective and prompt removal of Hg(II) from environmental water for the first time. Through filtration, the proposed GDYO-3M membrane (4 cm diameter size) fulfilled an exceeding 97% removal efficiency in > 10 L water containing 0.1 mg/L Hg(II) within 1 h. Due to the presence of -SH groups, the GDYO-3M membrane demonstrates an excellent selectivity for Hg(II) vs. 14 co-existing metal ions. In the meantime, the GDYO-3M membrane represents a favorable reproducibility (above 95% Hg(II) removal) after 9 successive adsorption-desorption cycles. For the mechanism, it is believed that the active sites in the adsorption process mainly include -SH groups, oxygen-containing functional groups, and alkyne bonds. Further, the GDYO-3M membrane can be utilized as an enrichment approach for sensitive analysis of Hg(II) in water based on energy dispersion X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (ED-XRF), whose detection limit (LOD) reaches 0.2 μg/L within 15 min. This work not only provides a green and efficient method for removing Hg(II), but also renders an approach for rapid, sensitive and portable Hg(II) detection in water.

Graphdiyne/metal oxide hybrid materials for efficient energy and environmental catalysis

Graphdiyne (GDY)-based materials, owing to their unique structure and tunable electronic properties, exhibit great potential in the fields of catalysis, energy, environmental science, and beyond. In particular, GDY/metal oxide hybrid materials (GDY/MOs) have attracted extensive attention in energy and environmental catalysis. The interaction between GDY and metal oxides can increase the number of intrinsic active sites, facilitate charge transfer, and regulate the adsorption and desorption of intermediate species. In this review, we summarize the structure, synthesis, advanced characterization, small molecule activation mechanism and applications of GDY/MOs in energy conversion and environmental remediation. The intrinsic structure-activity relationship and corresponding reaction mechanism are highlighted. In particular, the activation mechanisms of reactant molecules (H2O, O2, N2, etc.) on GDY/MOs are systemically discussed. Finally, we outline some new perspectives of opportunities and challenges in developing GDY/MOs for efficient energy and environmental catalysis.

Direct solar energy conversion on zinc-air battery

A concept of solar energy convertible zinc-air battery (SZAB) is demonstrated through rational design of an electrode coupled with multifunction. The multifunctional electrode is fabricated using nitrogen-substituted graphdiyne (N-GDY) with large π-conjugated carbonous network, which can work as photoresponsive bifunctional electrocatalyst, enabling a sunlight-promoted process through efficient injection of photoelectrons into the conduction band of N-GDY. SZAB enables direct conversion and storage of solar energy during the charging process. Such a battery exhibits a lowered charge voltage under illumination, corresponding to a high energy efficiency of 90.4% and electric energy saving of 30.3%. The battery can display a power conversion efficiency as high as 1.02%. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the photopromoted oxygen evolution reaction kinetics originates from the transition from the alkyne bonds to double bonds caused by the transfer of excited electrons, which changes the position of highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, thus greatly promoting the formation of intermediates to the conversion process. Our findings provide conceptual and experimental confirmation that batteries are charged directly from solar energy without the external solar cells, providing a way to manufacture future energy devices.

Microcrystalline Nanofiber Electrode with Adaptive Intrinsic Structure and Microscopic Interface

A strategy of microcrystalline aggregation is proposed to fabricate energy storage electrode with outstanding capacity and stability. Carbon-rich electrode (BDTG) functionalized with benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene units and butadiyne segments are prepared. The linear conjugate chains pack as microcrystalline nanofibers on nanoscale, which further aggregates to form a porous interpenetrating network. The microcrystalline aggregation feature of BDTG exhibit stable structure during long cycling test, revealing the following advantage in structure and property. The stretchable butadiyne linker facilitates reversible adsorption and desorption of Li with the aid of adjacent sulfur heteroatom. The alkyne-alkene transition exhibits intrinsic structural stability of microcrystalline region in BDTG electrodes. Meanwhile, alkynyl groups and sulfur heteroatoms on the surface of BDTG nanofibers participate in the formation of microscopic interface, providing a stable interfacial contact between BDTG electrodes and adjacent electrolyte. As a proof-of-concept, BDTG-based electrode shows high capacity (1430 mAh g-1 at 50 mA g-1) and excellent cycle performance (8000 cycles under 5 A g-1) in half-cell of lithium-ion batteries, and a reversible capacity of 120 mAh g-1 is obtained under the current density of 2 C in full-cell. This work shows microcrystalline aggregation is beneficial to realize adaptive intrinsic structure and interface contact during the charge-discharge process.

Amino-Functionalized Graphdiyne Derivative as a Cathode Interface Layer with High Thickness Tolerance for Highly Efficient Organic Solar Cells

Efficient cathode interfacial materials (CIMs) are essential components for effectively enhancing the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). Although high-performance CIMs are desired to meet the requirements of various OSCs, potential candidates for CIMs are scarce. Herein, an amino-functionalized graphdiyne derivative (GDY-N) is developed, which represents the first example of GDY that exhibits favorable solubility in alcohol. Utilizing GDY-N as the CIM, an outstanding champion PCE of 19.30% for devices based on the D18-Cl:L8-BO (certified result: 19.05%) is achieved, which is among the highest efficiencies reported to date in OSCs. Remarkably, the devices based on GDY-N exhibit a thickness-insensitive characteristic, maintaining 95% of their initial efficiency even with a film thickness of 25 nm. Moreover, the GDY-N displays wide universality and facilitates exceptional stability in OSCs. This work not only enriches the diversity of GDY derivatives, but also demonstrates the feasibility of GDY derivatives as CIMs with high thickness tolerance in OSCs.

2D Conjugated Polymer Thin Films for Organic Electronics: Opportunities and Challenges

2D conjugated polymers (2DCPs) possess extended in-plane π-conjugated lattice and out-of-plane π-π stacking, which results in enhanced electronic performance and potentially unique band structures. These properties, along with predesignability, well-defined channels, easy postmodification, and order structure attract extensive attention from material science to organic electronics. In this review, the recent advance in the interfacial synthesis and conductivity tuning strategies of 2DCP thin films, as well as their application in organic electronics is summarized. Furthermore, it is shown that, by combining topology structure design and targeted conductivity adjustment, researchers have fabricated 2DCP thin films with predesigned active groups, highly ordered structures, and enhanced conductivity. These films exhibit great potential for various thin-film organic electronics, such as organic transistors, memristors, electrochromism, chemiresistors, and photodetectors. Finally, the future research directions and perspectives of 2DCPs are discussed in terms of the interfacial synthetic design and structure engineering for the fabrication of fully conjugated 2DCP thin films, as well as the functional manipulation of conductivity to advance their applications in future organic electronics.

Graphdiyne Preparation and Application in Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Graphdiyne (GDY) is a new two-dimensional carbon network material composed of sp2 hybrid carbon and sp hybrid carbon conjugation. It has unique physical and chemical properties, such as high porosity, good electrical conductivity, high carrier mobility, adjustable band gap, and so on. The preparation of GDY and GDY derivatives by adjusting physical and chemical methods and changing monomers has become the key material in the fields of photocatalysis, energy storage, life science, and so on. In this paper, new methods for controllable growth of GDY are reviewed, including liquid phase chemical classical total synthesis, chemical vapor deposition, the interface method, the explosion method, and the mechanically driven ball milling method. FT-IR, Raman, NMR, and XAS are the main means to characterize the structure of GDY. Finally, the representative application of GDY in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is summarized, and its future development has been explored.

Enhanced uranium extraction from seawater: from the viewpoint of kinetics and thermodynamics

Uranium extraction from seawater (UES) is recognized as one of the seven pivotal chemical separations with the potential to revolutionize global paradigms. The forthcoming decade is anticipated to witness a surge in UES, driven by escalating energy demands. The oceanic reservoirs, possessing uranium quantities approximately 1000-fold higher than terrestrial mines, present a more sustainable and environmentally benign alternative. Empirical evidence from historical research indicates that adsorption emerges as the most efficacious process for uranium recovery from seawater, considering operational feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and selectivity. Over the years, scientific exploration has led to the development of a plethora of adsorbents with superior adsorption capacity. It would be efficient to design materials with a deep understanding of the adsorption from the perspective of kinetics and thermodynamics. Here, we summarize recent advancements in UES technology and the contemporary challenges encountered in this domain. Furthermore, we present our perspectives on the future trajectory of UES and finally offer our insights into this subject.

Prediction of highly stable 2D carbon allotropes based on azulenoid kekulene

Despite enormous interest in two-dimensional (2D) carbon allotropes, discovering stable 2D carbon structures with practically useful electronic properties presents a significant challenge. Computational modeling in this work shows that fusing azulene-derived macrocycles - azulenoid kekulenes (AK) - into graphene leads to the most stable 2D carbon allotropes reported to date, excluding graphene. Density functional theory predicts that placing the AK units in appropriate relative positions in the graphene lattice opens the 0.54 eV electronic bandgap and leads to the appearance of the remarkable 0.80 eV secondary gap between conduction bands - a feature that is rare in 2D carbon allotropes but is known to enhance light absorption and emission in 3D semiconductors. Among porous AK structures, one material stands out as a stable narrow-multigap (0.36 and 0.56 eV) semiconductor with light charge carriers (me = 0.17 m0,  mh = 0.19 m0), whereas its boron nitride analog is a wide-multigap (1.51 and 0.82 eV) semiconductor with light carriers (me = 0.39 m0,  mh = 0.32 m0). The multigap engineering strategy proposed here can be applied to other carbon nanostructures creating novel 2D materials for electronic and optoelectronic applications.

Controlled Growth of Metal Atom Arrays on Graphdiyne for Seawater Oxidation

Advanced atomic-level heterointerface engineering provides a promising method for the preparation of next-generation catalysts. Traditional carbon-based heterointerface catalytic performance rely heavily on the undetermined defects in complex and demanding preparation processes, rendering it impossible to control the catalytic performance. Here, we present a general method for the controlled growth of metal atom arrays on graphdiyne (GDY/IrCuOx), and we are surprised to find strong heterointerface strains during the growth. We successfully controlled the thickness of GDY to regulate the heterointerface metal atoms and achieved compressive strain at the interface. Experimental and density functional theory calculation results show that the unique incomplete charge transfer between GDY and metal atoms leads to the formation of strong interactions and significant heterointerface compressive strain between GDY and IrCuOx, which results in high oxidation performances with 1000 mA cm-2 at a low overpotential of 283 mV and long-term stability at large current densities in alkaline simulated seawater. We anticipate that this finding will contribute to construction of high-performance heterogeneous interface structures, leading to the development of new generation of GDY-based heterojunction catalysts in the field of catalysis for future promising performance.

Using Graphdiyne Nanoribbons for Molecular Electronics Spectroscopy and Nucleobase Identification: A Theoretical Investigation

In pursuit of fast, cost-effective, and reliable DNA sequencing techniques, a variety of two-dimensional (2D) material-based nanodevices such as solid-state nanopores and nanochannels have been explored and established. Given the promising potential of graphene for the design and fabrication of nanobiosensors, other 2D carbon allotropes such as graphyne and graphdiyne have also attracted a great deal of attention as candidate materials for the development of sequencing technology. Herein, employing the 2D electronic molecular spectroscopy (2DMES) method, we investigate the capability of graphdiyne nanoribbons (GDNRs) as the building blocks of a feasible, precise, and ultrafast sequencing device. Using first-principles calculations, we study the adsorption of four canonical nucleobases (NBs), i.e., adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G), and thymine (T) on an armchair GDNR (AGDNR). Our calculations reveal that compared to graphene, graphdiyne demonstrates more distinct binding energies for different NBs, indicating its more promising ability to unambiguously recognize DNA bases. Utilizing the 2DMES technique, we calculate the differential conductance (Δg) of the studied NB-AGDNR systems and show that the resulting Δg maps, unique for each NB-AGDNR complex, can be used to recognize each individual NB without ambiguity. We also investigate the conductance sensitivity of the proposed nanobiosensor and show that it exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity toward various NBs. Thus, our proposed graphdiyne-based nanodevice would hold promise for next-generation DNA sequencing technology.

Exploring the Fate of Copper Ions in the Synthesis of Graphdiyne

Copper is a crucial catalyst in the synthesis of graphdiyne (GDY). However, as catalysts, the final fate of the copper ions has hardly been concerned, which are usually treated as impurities. Here, it is observed that after simple washing with water and ethanol, GDY still contains a certain amount of copper ions, and demonstrated that the copper ions are adsorbed at the atomic layers of GDY. Furthermore, we transformed in situ the copper ions into ultrathin Cu nanocrystals, and the obtained Cu/GDY hybrids can be generally converted into a series of metal/GDY hybrid materials, such as Ag/GDY, Au/GDY, Pt/GDY, Pd/GDY, and Rh/GDY. The Cu/GDY hybrids exhibit extraordinary surface enhanced Raman scattering effect and can be applied in pollutant efficient enrichment and detection.

Self-Assembly of Wheel-Shaped Nanographdiynes and Self-Template Growth of Graphdiyne

Graphdiyne (GDY) multilayers show stacking-style-dependent physical properties; thus, controlling the stacking style of nanostructures is crucial for utilizing their electrical, optical, and transport properties in electro-optical devices. Herein, we report the assemblies of nanographdiynes decorated with substituents with different steric hindrances to adjust the stacking style. We show that the π-stacked aggregates were influenced by peripheral substituents and the substrate. Steric hexaterphenyl-substituted nanoGDY scaffolds led to dimer structures stacked in the AB-3 configuration with a twist angle of 26.01° or the AB-1 configuration with an in-plane shift along one diyne link. With the interval replacement of steric substituents with long C12 alkyl chains, nanoGDYs were stacked in the AB-2 configuration to decrease the steric congestion, eventually leading to one-dimensional (1D) nanofibrous aggregates. Self-assembly in the presence of substrates can result in ABC-stacked nanoGDYs, which endowed us with the possibility of using nanoGDY as the template for GDY growth in a homogeneous reaction. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, and near-infrared-ultraviolet-visible (NIR-UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy indicate that the crystalline GDY prepared in this way is a 1.18 eV bandgap semiconductor.

Space-Confined Synthesis of Monolayer Graphdiyne in MXene Interlayer

Graphdiyne (GDY) is an artificial carbon allotrope that is conceptually similar to graphene but composed of sp- and sp2 -hybridized carbon atoms. Monolayer GDY (ML-GDY) is predicted to be an ideal 2D semiconductor material with a wide range of applications. However, its synthesis has posed a significant challenge, leading to difficulties in experimentally validating theoretical properties. Here, it is reported that in situ acetylenic homocoupling of hexaethynylbenzene within the sub-nanometer interlayer space of MXene can effectively prevent out-of-plane growth or vertical stacking of the material, resulting in ML-GDY with in-plane periodicity. The subsequent exfoliation process successfully yields free-standing GDY monolayers with micrometer-scale lateral dimensions. The fabrication of field-effect transistor on free-standing ML-GDY makes the first measurement of its electronic properties possible. The measured electrical conductivity (5.1 × 103 S m-1 ) and carrier mobility (231.4 cm2 V-1 s-1 ) at room temperature are remarkably higher than those of the previously reported multilayer GDY materials. The space-confined synthesis using layered crystals as templates provides a new strategy for preparing 2D materials with precisely controlled layer numbers and long-range structural order.

Precise Preparation of Triarylboron-Based Graphdiyne Analogues for Gas Separation

A series of triarylboron-based graphdiyne analogues (TAB-GDYs) with tunable pore size were prepared through copper mediated coupling reaction. The elemental composition, chemical bond, morphology of TAB-GDYs were well characterized. The crystallinity was confirmed by selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and stacking modes were studied in combination with high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) and structure simulation. The absorption and desorption isotherm revealed relatively high specific surface area of these TAB-GDYs up to 788 m2  g-1 for TMTAB-GDY, which decreased as pore size enlarged. TAB-GDYs exhibit certain selectivity for CO2 /N2 (21.9), CO2 /CH4 (5.3), CO2 /H2 (41.8) and C2 H2 /CO2 (2.3). This work has developed a series of boron containing two-dimensional frameworks with clear structures and good stability, and their tunable pore sizes have laid the foundation for future applications in the gas separation field.

Zinc-Bismuth Binary Alloy Enabling High-Performance Aqueous Zinc Ion Batteries

Reconfiguration of zinc anodes efficiently mitigates dendrite formation and undesirable side reactions, thus favoring the long-term cycling performance of aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs). This study synthesizes a Zn@Bi alloy anode (Zn@Bi) using the fusion method, and find that the anode surfaces synthesized using this method have an extremely high percentage of Zn(002) crystalline surfaces. Experimental results indicate that the addition of bismuth inhibits the hydrogen evolution reaction and corrosion of zinc anodes. The finite-element simulation results indicate that Zn@Bi can effectively achieve a uniform anodic electric field, thereby regulating the homogeneous depositions of zinc ions and reducing the production of Zn dendrite. Theoretical calculations reveal that the incorporation of Bi favors the anode structure stabilization and higher adsorption energy of Zn@Bi corresponds to better Zn deposition kinetics. The Zn@Bi//Zn@Bi symmetric cell demonstrates an extended cycle life of 1000 h. Furthermore, when pairing Zn@Bi with an α-MnO2 cathode to construct a Zn@Bi//MnO2 cell, a specific capacity of 119.3 mAh g-1 is maintained even after 1700 cycles at 1.2 A g-1 . This study sheds light on the development of dendrite-free anodes for advanced AZIBs.

Versatile photoelectrochemical biosensor based on AIS/ZnS QDs sensitized-WSe2 nanoflowers coupled with DNA nanostructure probe for"On-Off"assays of TNF-α and MTase

Herein, a novel multifunctional photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor based on AgInS2 (AIS)/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) sensitized-WSe2 nanoflowers and DNA nanostructure signal probe was designed to achieve ultra-sensitive "On-Off" detection of human tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and methylase Dam MTase (MTase). AIS/ZnS QDs as an excellent photosensitive material was found to match WSe2 in energy level for the first time, and the photocurrent signal after sensitization was 65 times that of WSe2 nanoflowers and 17.9 times that of AIS/ZnS QDs. Moreover, abundant AIS/ZnS QDs were loaded on the TiO2 nanoparticles with good conductivity by DNA to fabricate a multifunctional probe, which can not only amplify signal but also specifically recognize target. When target TNF-α was present, the AIS/ZnS QDs signal probe was attached to the WSe2 nanoflowers-modified electrode through binding to aptamer, and the amplified PEC signal was generated for "on" assay of TNF-α. Furthermore, Dam MTase as second target induced methylation of hairpin HDam, so it is cleaved by the endonuclease DpnI, resulting in the shedding of AIS/ZnS QDs signal probe for signal "off" detection of MTase. This work opened a new photosensitized probe and developed a promising PEC biosensor for dual-targets assay. By programming the DNA nanostructure, the biosensor can detect versatile targets in a simple and sensitive method, which has good practical application value in human serum.

Surfactant-free interfacial growth of graphdiyne hollow microspheres and the mechanistic origin of their SERS activity

As a two-dimensional carbon allotrope, graphdiyne possesses a direct band gap, excellent charge carrier mobility, and uniformly distributed pores. Here, a surfactant-free growth method is developed to efficiently synthesize graphdiyne hollow microspheres at liquid‒liquid interfaces with a self-supporting structure, which avoids the influence of surfactants on product properties. We demonstrate that pristine graphdiyne hollow microspheres, without any additional functionalization, show a strong surface-enhanced Raman scattering effect with an enhancement factor of 3.7 × 107 and a detection limit of 1 × 10-12 M for rhodamine 6 G, which is approximately 1000 times that of graphene. Experimental measurements and first-principles density functional theory simulations confirm the hypothesis that the surface-enhanced Raman scattering activity can be attributed to an efficiency interfacial charge transfer within the graphdiyne-molecule system.

Highly Selective Electrocatalytic Olefin Hydrogenation in Aqueous Solution

Selective hydrogenation of olefins with water as the hydrogen source at ambient conditions is still a big challenge in the field of catalysis. Herein, the electrocatalytic hydrogenation of purely aliphatic and functionalized olefins was achieved by using graphdiyne based copper oxide quantum dots (Cux O/GDY) as cathodic electrodes and water as the hydrogen source, with high activity and selectivity in aqueous solution at high current density under ambient temperature and pressure. In particular, the sp-/sp2 -hybridized graphdiyne catalyst allows the selective hydrogenation of cis-trans isomeric olefins. The chemical and electronic structure of the GDY results in the incomplete charge transfer between GDY and Cu atoms to optimize the adsorption/desorption of the reaction intermediates and results in high reaction selectivity and activity for hydrogenation reactions.

Dual-Interface Engineering in Perovskite Solar Cells with 2D Carbides

Passivating the interfaces between the perovskite and charge transport layers is crucial for enhancing the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here we report a dual-interface engineering approach to improving the performance of FA0.85 MA0.15 Pb(I0.95 Br0.05 )3 -based PSCs by incorporating Ti3 C2 Clx Nano-MXene and o-TB-GDY nanographdiyne (NanoGDY) into the electron transport layer (ETL)/perovskite and perovskite/ hole transport layer (HTL) interfaces, respectively. The dual-interface passivation simultaneously suppresses non-radiative recombination and promotes carrier extraction by forming the Pb-Cl chemical bond and strong coordination of π-electron conjugation with undercoordinated Pb defects. The resulting perovskite film has an ultralong carrier lifetime exceeding 10 μs and an enlarged crystal size exceeding 2.5 μm. A maximum PCE of 24.86 % is realized, with an open-circuit voltage of 1.20 V. Unencapsulated cells retain 92 % of their initial efficiency after 1464 hours in ambient air and 80 % after 1002 hours of thermal stability test at 85 °C.

Alkyne-to-alkene conversion in graphdiyne driving instant reversible deformation of whole carbon film

The emerging field of soft robotics demands the core actuators and related responsive functional materials with rapid responsiveness and controllable accurate deformation. Here, we developed an alkyne-to-alkene chemical bond conversion way as the driving force to control ultrasensitive and instant reversible deformation of 2D carbon graphdiyne (GDY) film with an asymmetric interface design. The alkyne-to-alkene chemical bond conversion was triggered by acetone through the fast binding and release process. The as-fabricated GDY-based deformation modulator was exhibited to rapidly change shape (within 0.15 seconds) while dipped in an acetone vapor atmosphere and recover to its original form when exposed to air (recovery time < 0.01 seconds), with outstanding properties like large curvature, quick recovery time, excellent stability, and repeatability. It could mimic the movement of mosquito larvae, displaying great promise as micro bionic soft robots. Our results suggest alkyne-to-alkene bond conversion as a unique driving force for developing smart materials for areas like intelligent robotics and bionics.

Regulating Efficient and Selective Single-atom Catalysts for Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Anchoring transition metal (TM) atoms on suitable substrates to form single-atom catalysts (SACs) is a novel approach to constructing electrocatalysts. Graphdiyne with sp-sp2 hybridized carbon atoms and uniformly distributed pores have been considered as a potential carbon material for supporting metal atoms in a variety of catalytic processes. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to study the single TM atom anchoring on graphdiyne (TM1 -GDY, TM=Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Co and Cu) as the catalysts for CO2 reduction. After anchoring metal atoms on GDY, the catalytic activity of TM1 -GDY (TM=Mn, Co and Cu) for CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR) are significantly improved comparing with the pristine GDY. Among the studied TM1 -GDY, Cu1 -GDY shows excellent electrocatalytic activity for CO2 reduction for which the product is HCOOH and the limiting potential (UL ) is -0.16 V. Mn1 -GDY and Co1 -GDY exhibit superior catalytic selectivity for CO2 reduction to CH4 with UL of -0.62 and -0.34 V, respectively. The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by TM1 -GDY (TM=Mn, Co and Cu) occurs on carbon atoms, while the active sites of CO2 RR are the transition metal atoms . The present work is expected to provide a solid theoretical basis for CO2 conversion into valuable hydrocarbons.

Smartphone-Assisted Flexible Electrochemical Sensor Platform by a Homology DNA Nanomanager Tailored for Multiple Cancer Markers Field Inspection

In this work, an ingenious sensor technology was established by integrating the EBFCs on a flexible paper strip carrier (PE) that was used for simultaneous detection of tumor markers in complex samples. Adopting high performance ultrathin graphdiyne (U-GDY) as the substrate can increase the enzyme load, accelerate the electron transfer rate, and significantly enhance the detection sensitivity. A homologous DNA nanomanager strategy cleverly uses signal switches to recycle and amplify target miRNAs, while the smartphone receives real-time instantaneous current values to realize multivariate detection. Electrochemical data show that the detection limits (LODs) of miRNA-21 and miRNA-155 are 0.09 and 0.15 fM in the wide concentration range. The results confirm that the tailored sensor platform provides a strategy for the early cancer diagnosis and lays the foundation for the construction of a flexible wearable platform.

State, synthesis, perspective applications, and challenges of Graphdiyne and its analogues: A review of recent research

Carbon materials technology provides the possibility of synthesizing low-cost, outstanding performance replacements to noble-metal catalysts for long-term use. Graphdiyne (GDY) is a carbon allotrope with an extremely thin atomic thickness. It consists of carbon elements, that are hybridized with both sp. and sp2, resulting in a multilayered two-dimensional (2D) configuration. Several functional models suggest, that GDY contains spontaneously existing band structure with Dirac poles. This is due to the non-uniform interaction among carbon atoms, which results from various fusions and overlapping of the 2pz subshell. Unlike other carbon allotropes, GDY has Dirac cone arrangements, that in turn give it inimitable physiochemical characteristics. These properties include an adjustable intrinsic energy gap, high speeds charging transport modulation efficiency, and exceptional conductance. Many scientists are interested in such novel, linear, stacked materials, including GDY. As a result, organized synthesis of GDY has been pursued, making it one of the first synthesized GDY materials. There are several methods to manipulate the band structure of GDY, including applying stresses, introducing boron/nitrogen loading, utilizing nanowires, and hydrogenations. The flexibility of GDY can be effectively demonstrated through the formation of nano walls, nanostructures, nanotube patterns, nanorods, or structured striped clusters. GDY, being a carbon material, has a wide range of applications owing to its remarkable structural and electrical characteristics. According to subsequent research, the GDY can be utilized in numerous energy generation processes, such as electrochemical water splitting (ECWS), photoelectrochemical water splitting (PEC WS), nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), overall water splitting (OWS), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), energy storage materials, lithium-Ion batteries (LiBs) and solar cell applications. These studies suggested that the use of GDY holds significant potential for the development and implementation of efficient, multimodal, and intelligent catalysts with realistic applications. However, the limitation of GDY and GDY-based composites for forthcoming studies are similarly acknowledged. The objective of these studies is to deliver a comprehensive knowledge of GDY and inspire further advancement and utilization of these unique carbon materials.

Graphdiyne-Based Multiscale Catalysts for Ammonia Synthesis

Graphdiyne, a sp/sp2 -cohybridized two-dimensional all- carbon material, has many unique and fascinating properties of alkyne-rich structures, large π conjugated system, uniform pores, specific unevenly-distributed surface charge, and incomplete charge transfer properties provide promising potential in practical applications including catalysis, energy conversion and storage, intelligent devices, life science, photoelectric, etc. These superior advantages have made graphdiyne one of the hottest research frontiers of chemistry and materials science and produced a series of original and innovative research results in the fundamental and applied research of carbon materials. In recent years, considerable advances have been made toward the development of graphdiyne-based multiscale catalysts for nitrogen fixation and ammonia synthesis at room temperatures and ambient pressures. This review aims to provide a comprehensive update in regard to the synthesis of graphdiyne-based multiscale catalysts and their applications in the synthesis of ammonia. The unique features of graphdiyne are highlighted throughout the review. Finally, it concludes with the discussion of challenges and future perspectives relating to graphdiyne.

Ir0/graphdiyne atomic interface for selective epoxidation

The development of catalysts that can selectively and efficiently promote the alkene epoxidation at ambient temperatures and pressures is an important promising path to renewable synthesis of various chemical products. Here we report a new type of zerovalent atom catalysts comprised of zerovalent Ir atoms highly dispersed and anchored on graphdiyne (Ir⁰/GDY) wherein the Ir⁰ is stabilized by the incomplete charge transfer effect and the confined effect of GDY natural cavity. The Ir⁰/GDY can selectively and efficiently produce styrene oxides (SO) by electro-oxidizing styrene (ST) in aqueous solutions at ambient temperatures and pressures with high conversion efficiency of ∼100%, high SO selectivity of 85.5%, and high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 55%. Experimental and density functional theory (DFT) calculation results show that the intrinsic activity and stability due to the incomplete charge transfer between Ir⁰ and GDY effectively promoted the electron exchange between the catalyst and reactant molecule, and realized the selective epoxidation of ST to SO. Studies of the reaction mechanism demonstrate that Ir⁰/GDY proceeds a distinctive pathway for highly selective and active alkene-to-epoxide conversion from the traditional processes. This work presents a new example of constructing zerovalent metal atoms within the GDY matrix toward selective electrocatalytic epoxidation.

Energy Storage Mechanism in Supercapacitors with Porous Graphdiynes: Effects of Pore Topology and Electrode Metallicity

Porous graphdiynes are a new class of porous 2D materials with tunable electronic structures and various pore structures. They have potential applications as well-defined nanostructured electrodes and can provide platforms for understanding energy storage mechanisms underlying supercapacitors. Herein, the effect of stacking structure and metallicity on energy storage with such electrodes is investigated. Simulations reveal that supercapacitors based on porous graphdiynes of AB stacking structure can achieve both higher double-layer capacitance and ionic conductivity than AA stacking. This phenomenon is ascribed to more intense image forces in AB stacking, leading to a breakdown of ionic ordering and the formation of effective "free ions". Macroscale analysis shows that doped porous graphdiynes can deliver outstanding gravimetric and volumetric energy and power densities due to their enhanced quantum capacitance. These findings pave the way for designing high-performance supercapacitors by regulating pore topology and metallicity of electrode materials.

Physical mechanism on the linear spectrum and nonlinear spectrum in a twist bilayer graphdiyne nanodisk

The one-photon absorption properties (OPA), two-photon absorption properties (TPA), electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra and partial DOS (PDOS) of a twist bilayer graphdiyne nanodisk (TwBLGDY-ND) were investigated by using a variety of quantum chemistry and wave function analyses. The physical mechanism of the twist bilayer graphdiyne nanodisk (TwBLGDY) with optical properties regulated by twisting angles was revealed. The results show that the twist angle makes the TwBLGDY form a moiré superlattice structure, and electron excitation mainly occurs in the first ring of the moiré superlattice structure. The contribution of atomic orbitals in these fragments to transition dipole moments is greater and electronic transitions are more likely to occur. When the twist angle increases from 0° to 15°, the absorption spectrum of the system is red shifted, which is mainly due to the enhancement of electron excitation characteristics. When the twist angle increases from 15° to 27.5°, the absorption spectrum of the system is blue shifted, due to the enhanced charge transfer within the layer. On the other hand, the twist angle can regulate the TPA absorption cross section of the system to enhance the intensity of the absorption spectrum. The twist angle can also regulate chirality by adjusting the spatial distribution of electric dipole transition and magnetic dipole transition. This study can provide theoretical guidance for constructing chiral optical devices based on the TwBLGDY structure.

Graphdiyne-Based All-Solid-State Passively Q-Switched Tm:YAP Laser at 2 μm

All-solid-state Tm lasers have a wider wavelength range and higher output power compared to other types of lasers. In this work, we demonstrate an all-solid-state, high repetition, Tm:YAP laser Q-switched by a graphdiyne (GDY) saturable absorber. The high-quality optical nonlinear material GDY, synthesized by a cross-coupling method, exhibits a strong nonlinear optical response. The application of GDY as a saturable absorber in the passively Q-switched (PQS) Tm:YAP of an all-solid-state laser has been realized with the shortest pulse duration of ~785 ns and repetition frequency of ~199.6 kHz at a central wavelength of 1985.8 nm. This represents the shortest pulse duration and the highest repetition frequency achieved from GDY in a solid-state Tm laser to date. Our work demonstrates the remarkable nonlinear optical properties of GDY, which holds promising potential in the field of optoelectronics.

Two-Dimensional Carbon Graphdiyne: Advances in Fundamental and Application Research

Graphdiyne (GDY), a rising star of carbon allotropes, features a two-dimensional all-carbon network with the cohybridization of sp and sp² carbon atoms and represents a trend and research direction in the development of carbon materials. The sp/sp²-hybridized structure of GDY endows it with numerous advantages and advancements in controlled growth, assembly, and performance tuning, and many studies have shown that GDY has been a key material for innovation and development in the fields of catalysis, energy, photoelectric conversion, mode conversion and transformation of electronic devices, detectors, life sciences, etc. In the past ten years, the fundamental scientific issues related to GDY have been understood, showing differences from traditional carbon materials in controlled growth, chemical and physical properties and mechanisms, and attracting extensive attention from many scientists. GDY has gradually developed into one of the frontiers of chemistry and materials science, and has entered the rapid development period, producing large numbers of fundamental and applied research achievements in the fundamental and applied research of carbon materials. For the exploration of frontier scientific concepts and phenomena in carbon science research, there is great potential to promote progress in the fields of energy, catalysis, intelligent information, optoelectronics, and life sciences. In this review, the growth, self-assembly method, aggregation structure, chemical modification, and doping of GDY are shown, and the theoretical calculation and simulation and fundamental properties of GDY are also fully introduced. In particular, the applications of GDY and its formed aggregates in catalysis, energy storage, photoelectronic, biomedicine, environmental science, life science, detectors, and material separation are introduced.

Photocatalytic CO2 Conversion into Solar Fuels Using Carbon-Based Materials-A Review

Carbon materials with elusive 0D, 1D, 2D, and 3D nanostructures and high surface area provide certain emerging applications in electrocatalytic and photocatalytic CO₂ utilization. Since carbon possesses high electrical conductivity, it expels the photogenerated electrons from the catalytic surface and can tune the photocatalytic activity in the visible-light region. However, the photocatalytic efficiency of pristine carbon is comparatively low due to the high recombination of photogenerated carriers. Thus, supporting carbon materials, such as graphene, CNTs (Carbon nanotubes), g-C₃N₄, MWCNs (Multiwall carbon nanotubes), conducting polymers, and its other simpler forms like activated carbon, nanofibers, nanosheets, and nanoparticles, are usually combined with other metal and non-metal nanocomposites to increase the CO₂ absorption and conversion. In addition, carbon-based materials with transition metals and organometallic complexes are also commonly used as photocatalysts for CO₂ reduction. This review focuses on developing efficient carbon-based nanomaterials for the photoconversion of CO₂ into solar fuels. It is concluded that MWCNs are one of the most used materials as supporting materials for CO₂ reduction. Due to the multi-layered morphology, multiple reflections will occur within the layers, thus enhancing light harvesting. In particular, stacked nanostructured hollow sphere morphologies can also help the metal doping from corroding.

Prospects of 2D graphdiynes and their applications in desalination and wastewater remediation

Water is an indispensable part of human life that affects health and food intake. Water pollution caused by rapid industrialization, agriculture, and other human activities affects humanity. Therefore, researchers are prudent and cautious regarding the use of novel materials and technologies for wastewater remediation. Graphdiyne (GDY), an emerging 2D nanomaterial, shows promise in this direction. Graphdiyne has a highly symmetrical π-conjugated structure consisting of uniformly distributed pores; hence, it is favorable for applications such as oil-water separation and organic-pollutant removal. The acetylenic linkage in GDY can strongly interact with metal ions, rendering GDY applicable to heavy-metal adsorption. In addition, GDY membranes that exhibit 100% salt rejection at certain pressures are potential candidates for wastewater treatment and water reuse via desalination. This review provides deep insights into the structure, properties, and synthesis methods of GDY, owing to which it is a unique, promising material. In the latter half of the article, various applications of GDY in desalination and wastewater treatment have been detailed. Finally, the prospects of these materials have been discussed succinctly.

Design, synthesis, and application of some two-dimensional materials

Two-dimensional (2D) materials are widely used as key components in the fields of energy conversion and storage, optoelectronics, catalysis, biomedicine, etc. To meet the practical needs, molecular structure design and aggregation process optimization have been systematically carried out. The intrinsic correlation between preparation methods and the characteristic properties is investigated. This review summarizes the recent research achievements of 2D materials in the aspect of molecular structure modification, aggregation regulation, characteristic properties, and device applications. The design strategies to fabricate functional 2D materials starting from precursor molecules are introduced in detail referring to organic synthetic chemistry and self-assembly technology. It provides important research ideas for the design and synthesis of related materials.
