Surficial Reconstruction of Pt-Ni/NiS and Its Effect on Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution in Alkaline Medium

Cyclic voltammetry pretreatment of Pt-based electrocatalysts has been proven to be a normal activation process on achieving the optimal alkaline hydrogen evolution performance. Until now, the congruent relationship between the microstructural evolution and performance improvement during this process has rarely been reported. Herein, when the in situ transmission electron microscopy and in situ Raman analyses are employed, a self-reconstruction process from crystalline NiS into amorphous nickel hydroxide hydrate [Ni(OH)2-x·H2O, where x ≈ 0.3] on the surface of platinum-nickel nanowires has first been captured, which is the critical water dissociation active site to offer a sufficient proton supply. Furthermore, such a surficial reconstruction triggers an increase in the current density from -2.3 to -38.8 mA/cm2 (at -70 mV), which is nearly 17 times. These observations point to the fact that it is essential to consider the fundamental mechanisms of hydrogen evolution on the active sites when the process is scaled up.

Quantifying Covalency and Environmental Effects in RASSCF-Simulated O K-Edge XANES of Uranyl

A RASSCF approach to simulate the O K-edge XANES spectra of uranyl is employed, utilizing three models that progressively improve the representation of the local crystal environment. Simulations successfully reproduce the observed three-peak profile of the experimental spectrum and confirm peak assignments made by Denning. The [UO2Cl4]2- model offers the best agreement with experiment, with peak positions (to within 1 eV) and relative peak separations accurately reproduced. Establishing a direct link between a specific electronic transition and peak intensity is complicated, as a large number of possible transitions can contribute to the overall peak profile. Furthermore, a relationship between oxygen character in the antibonding orbital and the strength of the transition breaks down when using a variety of orbital composition approaches at larger excitation energy. Covalency analysis of the U-O bond in both the ground- and excited-state reveals a dependence on the crystal environment. Orbital composition analysis reveals an underestimation of the uranium contribution to ground-state bonding orbitals when probing O K-edge core-excited states, regardless of the uranyl model employed. However, improving the environmental model provides core-excited state electronic structures that are better representative of that of the ground-state, validating their use in the determination of covalency and bonding.

Embedded Hybrid-Dimensional Heterointerface for Filament Modulation in 2D Material-Based Artificial Nociceptor

Nociceptors are key sensory receptors that transmit warning signals to the central nervous system in response to painful stimuli. This fundamental process is emulated in an electronic device by developing a novel artificial nociceptor with an ultrathin, nonstoichiometric gallium oxide (GaOx)-silicon oxide heterostructure. A large-area 2D-GaOx film is printed on a substrate through liquid metal printing to facilitate the production of conductive filaments. This nociceptive structure exhibits a unique short-term temporal response following stimulation, enabling a facile demonstration of threshold-switching physics. The developed heterointerface 2D-GaOx film enables the fabrication of fast-switching, low-energy, and compliance-free 2D-GaOx nociceptors, as confirmed through experiments. The accumulation and extrusion of Ag in the oxide matrix are significant for inducing plastic changes in artificial biological sensors. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy demonstrate that Ag clusters in the material dispersed under electrical bias and regrouped spontaneously when the bias is removed owing to interfacial energy minimization. Moreover, 2D nociceptors are stable; thus, heterointerface engineering can enable effective control of charge transfer in 2D heterostructural devices. Furthermore, the diffusive 2D-GaOx device and its Ag dynamics enable the direct emulation of biological nociceptors, marking an advancement in the hardware implementation of artificial human sensory systems.

Operando Soft X-ray Absorption of LaMn1-x Co x O3 Perovskites for CO Oxidation

We employed operando soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to monitor the changes in the valence states and spin properties of LaMn1-x Co x O3 catalysts subjected to a mixture of CO and O2 at ambient pressure. Guided by simulations based on charge transfer multiplet theory, we quantitatively analyze the Mn and Co 2p XAS as well as the oxygen K-edge XAS spectra during the reaction process. The Mn sites are particularly sensitive to the catalytic reaction, displaying dynamics in their oxidation state. When Co doping is introduced (x ≤ 0.5), Mn oxidizes from Mn2+ to Mn3+ and Mn4+, while Co largely maintains a valence state of Co2+. In the case of LaCoO3, we identify high-spin and low-spin Co3+ species combined with Co2+. Our investigation underscores the importance to consider the spin and valence states of catalyst materials under operando conditions.

Universal Synthesis of Amorphous Metal Oxide Nanomeshes

Constructing the pore structures in amorphous metal oxide nanosheets can enhance their electrocatalytic performance by efficiently increasing specific surface areas and facilitating mass transport in electrocatalysis. However, the accurate synthesis for porous amorphous metal oxide nanosheets remains a challenge. Herein, a facile nitrate-assisted oxidation strategy is reported for synthesizing amorphous mesoporous iridium oxide nanomeshes (a-m IrOx NMs) with a pore size of ∼4 nm. X-ray absorption characterizations indicate that a-m IrOx NMs possess stretched Ir─O bonds and weaker Ir-O interaction compared with commercial IrO2. Combining thermogravimetric-fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with differential scanning calorimetry measurements, it is demonstrated that sodium nitrate, acting as an oxidizing agent, is conducive to the formation of amorphous nanosheets, while the NO2 produced by the in situ decomposition of nitrates facilitates the generation of pores within the nanomeshes. As an anode electrocatalyst in proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer, a-m IrOx NMs exhibit superior performance, maintaining a cell voltage of 1.67 V at 1 A cm-2 for 120 h without obvious decay with a low loading (0.4 mgcatalyst cm-2). Furthermore, the nitrate-assisted method is demonstrated to be a general approach to prepare various amorphous metal oxide nanomeshes, including amorphous RhOx, TiOx, ZrOx, AlOx, and HfOx nanomeshes.

Elevated Water Oxidation by Cation Leaching Enabled Tunable Surface Reconstruction

Water electrolysis is one promising and eco-friendly technique for energy storage, yet its overall efficiency is hindered by the sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Therefore, developing strategies to boost OER catalyst performance is crucial. With the advances in characterization techniques, an extensive phenomenon of surface structure evolution into an active amorphous layer was uncovered. Surface reconstruction in a controlled fashion was then proposed as an emerging strategy to elevate water oxidation efficiency. In this work, Cr substitution induces the reconstruction of NiFexCr2-xO4 during cyclic voltammetry (CV) conditioning by Cr leaching, which leads to a superior OER performance. The best-performed NiFe0.25Cr1.75O4 shows a ~1500 % current density promotion at overpotential η=300 mV, which outperforms many advanced NiFe-based OER catalysts. It is also found that their OER activities are mainly determined by Ni : Fe ratio rather than considering the contribution of Cr. Meanwhile, the turnover frequency (TOF) values based on redox peak and total mass were obtained and analysed, and their possible limitations in the case of NiFexCr2-xO4 are discussed. Additionally, the high activity and durability were further verified in a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) cell, highlighting its potential for practical large-scale and sustainable hydrogen gas generation.

Interplay between Intermediate Anionic and Cationic Species and the Reflection to Voltage Hysteresis of Oxygen-Redox Battery Electrodes: A Holistic Picture

Ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) is conceived as a universal theory to account for voltage hysteresis in oxygen-redox battery electrodes. However, the influence of oxygen anionic species on mediating LMCT and its reflection to voltage hysteresis remain poorly understood. Herein, we demonstrate a close interplay between the chemical states of oxidized oxygen species, the cationic species, and the kinetics of LMCT and forcefully identify their influence on the magnitude of voltage hysteresis. Combining electrochemical/spectroscopic evidence and first-principles calculations, we clarify two distinct kinds of dynamic LMCT processes─that is, the formation of trapped molecular O2 accompanied by the reduction of Ni4+/Ni3+ to Ni2+ (fast LMCT) during relaxation in Li-rich cation-disordered rock-salt (DRX) Li1.3Ni0.27Ta0.43O2 with extremely large voltage hysteresis, the formation of O-O dimers, and the partial reduction of Mn4+ to Mn3+ (slow LMCT) in DRX-Li1.3Mn0.4Ta0.3O2 with medium hysteresis. We further validate the maintenance of both cationic (Mn4+) and anionic (O-•) species during relaxation in Na2Mn3O7, reconciling its nonhysteretic behavior to the absence of LMCT. This study highlights the critical role of intermediate anionic species in mediating LMCT and provides a causal explanation of various voltage hysteresis signatures of oxygen-redox materials.

Structure and Formation Mechanisms in Tantalum and Niobium Oxides in Superconducting Quantum Circuits

Improving the qubit's lifetime (T1) is crucial for fault-tolerant quantum computing. Recent advancements have shown that replacing niobium (Nb) with tantalum (Ta) as the base metal significantly increases T1, likely due to a less lossy native surface oxide. However, understanding the formation mechanism and nature of both surface oxides is still limited. Using aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy, we found that Ta surface oxide has fewer suboxides than Nb oxide. We observed an abrupt oxidation state transition from Ta2O5 to Ta, as opposed to the gradual shift from Nb2O5, NbO2, and NbO to Nb, consistent with thermodynamic modeling. Additionally, amorphous Ta2O5 exhibits a closer-to-crystalline bonding nature than Nb2O5, potentially hindering H atomic diffusion toward the oxide/metal interface. Finally, we propose a loss mechanism arising from the transition between two states within the distorted octahedron in an amorphous structure, potentially causing two-level system loss. Our findings offer a deeper understanding of the differences between native amorphous Ta and Nb oxides, providing valuable insights for advancing superconducting qubits through surface oxide engineering.

Comparing the Impacts of Strain Types on Oxygen-Vacancy Formation in a Perovskite Oxide via Nanometer-Scale Strain Fields

The utilization of an in-plane lattice misfit in an oxide epitaxially grown on another oxide with a different lattice parameter is a well-known approach to induce strains in oxide materials. However, achieving a sufficiently large misfit strain in this heteroepitaxial configuration is usually challenging, unless the thickness of the grown oxide is kept well below a critical value to prevent the formation of misfit dislocations at the interface for relaxation. Instead of adhering to this conventional approach, here, we employ nanometer-scale large strain fields built around misfit dislocations to examine the effects of two distinct types of strains─tension and compression─on the generation of oxygen vacancies in heteroepitaxial LaCoO3 films. Our atomic-level observations, coupled with local electron-beam irradiation, clarify that the in-plane compression notably suppresses the creation of oxygen vacancies, whereas the formation of vacancies is facilitated under tensile strain. Demonstrating that the defect generation can considerably vary with the type of strain, our study highlights that the experimental approach adopted in this work is applicable to other oxide systems when investigating the strain effects on vacancy formation.

Atomic-Level Observation of Potential-Dependent Variations at the Surface of an Oxide Catalyst during Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Understanding the intricate details of the surface atomic structure and composition of catalysts during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for developing catalysts with high stability in water electrolyzers. While many notable studies highlight surface amorphization and reconstruction, systematic analytical tracing of the catalyst surface as a function of overpotential remains elusive. Heteroepitaxial (001) films of chemically stable and lattice-oxygen-inactive LaCoO3 are thus utilized as a model catalyst to demonstrate a series of atomic-resolution observations of the film surface at different anodic potentials. The first key finding is that atoms at the surface are fairly dynamic even at lower overpotentials. Angstrom-scale atomic displacements within the perovskite framework are identified below a certain potential level. Another noteworthy feature is that amorphization (or paracrystallization) with no long-range order is finally induced at higher overpotentials. In particular, surface analyses consistently support that the oxidation of lattice oxygen is coupled with amorphous phase formation at the high potentials. Theoretical calculations also reveal an upward shift of oxygen 2p states toward the Fermi level, indicating enhanced lattice oxygen activation when atom displacement occurs more extensively. This study emphasizes that the degradation behavior of OER catalysts can distinctively vary depending on the overpotential level.

B-O-O-B Impurity Induces Ultralong Room-Temperature Phosphorescence of Boric Acid

Organic materials that can emit ultralong room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) have attracted a great deal of interest. Whether the pure boric acid (BA) solid can emit RTP and the origin of the RTP in BA caused a debate recently. Herein, our first-principles calculations and experimental measurements suggest that RTP of BA originates from the B-O-O-B group in a (H2BO3)2 species, which can be formed by polymerization of two dehydrogenated BA molecules under light irradiation. The calculated absorption, fluorescence, and phosphorescence spectra of B-O-O-B match well with the experiments. Experimental X-ray photoelectron and X-ray absorption spectra evidence the existence of B-O-O-B in BA. The O-O bond in B-O-O-B can break upon optical excitation, creating two B-O radicals. Radiative transition from localized dangling orbitals of the B-O radicals to the delocalized orbitals of the crystal bulk leads to the observed RTP. Our calculated phosphorescence lifetime is ∼1 s, which agrees well with the experiment.

Crown Ether Electrolyte Induced Li2O2 Amorphization for Low Polarization and Long Lifespan Li-O2 Batteries

Lithium-oxygen batteries possess an extremely high theoretical energy density, rendering them a prime candidate for next-generation secondary batteries. However, they still face multiple problems such as huge charge polarization and poor life, which lay a significant gap between laboratory research and commercial applications. In this work, we adopt 15-crown-5 ether (C15) as solvent to regulate the generation of discharge products in lithium-oxygen batteries. The coronal structure endows C15 with strong affinity to Li+, firmly stabilizes the intermediate LiO2 and discharge product Li2O2. Thus, the crystalline Li2O2 is amorphized into easily decomposable amorphous products. The lithium-oxygen batteries assembled with 0.5 M C15 electrolyte show an increased discharge capacity from 4.0 mAh cm-2 to 5.7 mAh cm-2 and a low charge overpotential of 0.88 V during the whole lifespan at 0.05 mA cm-2. The batteries with 1 M C15 electrolyte can cycle stably for 140 cycles. Furthermore, the amorphous characteristic of Li2O2 product is preserved when matched with redox mediators such as LiI, with the charge polarization further decreasing to 0.74 V over a cycle life of 190 cycles. This provides new possibilities for electrolyte design to promote Li2O2 amorphization and reduce charge overpotential in lithium-oxygen batteries.

Analytical electron microscopy analysis of insulating and metallic phases in nanostructured vanadium dioxide

Vanadium dioxide (VO2) is a strongly correlated material that exhibits the insulator-to-metal transition (IMT) near room temperature, which makes it a promising candidate for applications in nanophotonics or optoelectronics. However, creating VO2 nanostructures with the desired functionality can be challenging due to microscopic inhomogeneities that can significantly impact the local optical and electronic properties. Thin lamellas, produced by focused ion beam milling from a homogeneous layer, provide a useful prototype for studying VO2 at the truly microscopic level using a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). High-resolution imaging is used to identify structural inhomogeneities while electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) supported by statistical analysis helps to detect V x O y stoichiometries with a reduced oxidation number of vanadium at the areas of thickness below 70 nm. On the other hand, the thicker areas are dominated by vanadium dioxide, where the signatures of the IMT are detected in both core-loss and low-loss EELS experiments with in situ heating. The experimental results are interpreted with ab initio and semi-classical calculations. This work shows that structural inhomogeneities such as pores and cracks present no harm to the desired optical properties of VO2 samples.

Intrinsic-strain-induced ferroelectric order and ultrafine nanodomains in SrTiO3

Nano ferroelectrics holds the potential application promise in information storage, electro-mechanical transformation, and novel catalysts but encounters a huge challenge of size limitation and manufacture complexity on the creation of long-range ferroelectric ordering. Herein, as an incipient ferroelectric, nanosized SrTiO3 was indued with polarized ordering at room temperature from the nonpolar cubic structure, driven by the intrinsic three-dimensional (3D) tensile strain. The ferroelectric behavior can be confirmed by piezoelectric force microscopy and the ferroelectric TO1 soft mode was verified with the temperature stability to 500 K. Its structural origin comes from the off-center shift of Ti atom to oxygen octahedron and forms the ultrafine head-to-tail connected 90° nanodomains about 2 to 3 nm, resulting in an overall spontaneous polarization toward the short edges of nanoparticles. According to the density functional theory calculations and phase-field simulations, the 3D strain-related dipole displacement transformed from [001] to [111] and segmentation effect on the ferroelectric domain were further proved. The topological ferroelectric order induced by intrinsic 3D tensile strain shows a unique approach to get over the nanosized limitation in nanodevices and construct the strong strain-polarization coupling, paving the way for the design of high-performance and free-assembled ferroelectric devices.

Fusion Growth and Extraordinary Distortion of Ultrasmall Metal Oxide Nanoparticles

Ultrasmall metal oxide nanoparticles (<5 nm) potentially have new properties, different from conventional nanoparticles. The precise size control of ultrasmall nanoparticles remains difficult for metal oxide. In this study, the size of CeO2 nanoparticles was precisely controlled (1.3-9.4 nm) using a continuous-flow hydrothermal reactor, and the atomic distortion that occurs in ultrasmall metal oxides was explored for CeO2. The crystalline nanoparticles grow rapidly like droplets via coalescence, although they reach a critical particle size (∼3 to 4 nm), beyond which they grow slowly and change shape through ripening. In the initial growth stage, the ultrasmall nanoparticles exhibit disordered atomic configurations, including stacking faults. In ultrasmall CeO2 nanoparticles (<3 to 4 nm), unusual electron localization occurs on Ce 4f orbitals (Ce3+) as a result of O disordering, regardless of O vacancy concentration. This behavior differs from ordinary electron localization caused by the presence of O vacancies. The ultrasmall metal oxides have extraordinary distortion states, making them promising for use in nanotechnology applications. Furthermore, the proposed synthesis method can be applied to various other metal oxides and allows exploration of their properties.

Pourbaix Machine Learning Framework Identifies Acidic Water Oxidation Catalysts Exhibiting Suppressed Ruthenium Dissolution

The demand for green hydrogen has raised concerns over the availability of iridium used in oxygen evolution reaction catalysts. We identify catalysts with the aid of a machine learning-aided computational pipeline trained on more than 36,000 mixed metal oxides. The pipeline accurately predicts Pourbaix decomposition energy (Gpbx) from unrelaxed structures with a mean absolute error of 77 meV per atom, enabling us to screen 2070 new metallic oxides with respect to their prospective stability under acidic conditions. The search identifies Ru0.6Cr0.2Ti0.2O2 as a candidate having the promise of increased durability: experimentally, we find that it provides an overpotential of 267 mV at 100 mA cm-2 and that it operates at this current density for over 200 h and exhibits a rate of overpotential increase of 25 μV h-1. Surface density functional theory calculations reveal that Ti increases metal-oxygen covalency, a potential route to increased stability, while Cr lowers the energy barrier of the HOO* formation rate-determining step, increasing activity compared to RuO2 and reducing overpotential by 40 mV at 100 mA cm-2 while maintaining stability. In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy and ex situ ptychography-scanning transmission X-ray microscopy show the evolution of a metastable structure during the reaction, slowing Ru mass dissolution by 20× and suppressing lattice oxygen participation by >60% compared to RuO2.

Insights into Strain Engineering: From Ferroelectrics to Related Functional Materials and Beyond

Ferroelectrics have become indispensable components in various application fields, including information processing, energy harvesting, and electromechanical conversion, owing to their unique ability to exhibit electrically or mechanically switchable polarization. The distinct polar noncentrosymmetric lattices of ferroelectrics make them highly responsive to specific crystal structures. Even slight changes in the lattice can alter the polarization configuration and response to external fields. In this regard, strain engineering has emerged as a prevalent regulation approach that not only offers a versatile platform for structural and performance optimization within ferroelectrics but also unlocks boundless potential in various functional materials. In this review, we systematically summarize the breakthroughs in ferroelectric-based functional materials achieved through strain engineering and progress in method development. We cover research activities ranging from fundamental attributes to wide-ranging applications and novel functionalities ranging from electromechanical transformation in sensors and actuators to tunable dielectric materials and information technologies, such as transistors and nonvolatile memories. Building upon these achievements, we also explore the endeavors to uncover the unprecedented properties through strain engineering in related chemical functionalities, such as ferromagnetism, multiferroicity, and photoelectricity. Finally, through discussions on the prospects and challenges associated with strain engineering in the materials, this review aims to stimulate the development of new methods for strain regulation and performance boosting in functional materials, transcending the boundaries of ferroelectrics.

Chemical Environment and Structural Variations in High Entropy Oxide Thin Film Probed with Electron Microscopy

We employ analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to correlate the structural and chemical environment variations within a stacked epitaxial thin film of the high entropy oxide (HEO) Mg0.2Co0.2Ni0.2Cu0.2Zn0.2O (J14), with two layers grown at different substrate temperatures (500 and 200 °C) using pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Electron diffraction and atomically resolved STEM imaging reveal the difference in out-of-plane lattice parameters in the stacked thin film, which is further quantified on a larger scale using four-dimensional STEM (4D-STEM). In the layer deposited at a lower temperature, electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) mapping indicates drastic changes in the oxidation states and bonding environment for Co ions, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) mapping detects more significant cation deficiency. Ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations validate that vacancies on the cation sublattice of J14 result in significant electronic and structural changes. The experimental and computational analyses indicate that low temperatures during film growth result in cation deficiency, an altered chemical environment, and reduced lattice parameters while maintaining a single phase. Our results demonstrate that the complex correlation of configurational entropy, kinetics, and thermodynamics can be utilized for accessing a range of metastable configurations in HEO materials without altering cation proportions, enabling further engineering of functional properties of HEO materials.

Ru Single Atoms Integrated into Cobalt Oxide Spinel Structure with Interstitial Carbon for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a critical role in energy conversion technologies. Significant progress has been made in alkaline conditions. In contrast, it remains a challenge to develop stable OER electrocatalysts in acidic conditions. Herein, a new strategy is reported to stabilize single atoms integrated into cobalt oxide spinel structure with interstitial carbon (Ru0.27Co2.73O4), where the optimized Ru0.27Co2.73O4 exhibits a low overpotential of 265, 326, and 367 mV to reach a current density of 10, 50, and 100 mA cm2, respectively. More importantly, Ru0.27Co2.73O4 has long-term stability of up to 100 h, representing one of the most stable OER electrocatalysts. X-ray adsorption spectroscopy (XAS) characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations jointly demonstrate that the significant catalytic performance of Ru0.27Co2.73O4 is due to the synergistic effect between the Ru and Co sites and the bridging O ligands, as well as the significant reduction of the OER energy barrier. This work provides a new perspective for designing and constructing efficient non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts for water splitting.

A locally solvent-tethered polymer electrolyte for long-life lithium metal batteries

Solid polymer electrolytes exhibit enhanced Li+ conductivity when plasticized with highly dielectric solvents such as N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). However, the application of DMF-containing electrolytes in solid-state batteries is hindered by poor cycle life caused by continuous DMF degradation at the anode surface and the resulting unstable solid-electrolyte interphase. Here we report a composite polymer electrolyte with a rationally designed Hofmann-DMF coordination complex to address this issue. DMF is engineered on Hofmann frameworks as tethered ligands to construct a locally DMF-rich interface which promotes Li+ conduction through a ligand-assisted transport mechanism. A high ionic conductivity of 6.5 × 10-4 S cm-1 is achieved at room temperature. We demonstrate that the composite electrolyte effectively reduces the free shuttling and subsequent decomposition of DMF. The locally solvent-tethered electrolyte cycles stably for over 6000 h at 0.1 mA cm-2 in Li | |Li symmetric cell. When paired with sulfurized polyacrylonitrile cathodes, the full cell exhibits a prolonged cycle life of 1000 cycles at 1 C. This work will facilitate the development of practical polymer-based electrolytes with high ionic conductivity and long cycle life.

Offcut Substrate-Induced Defect Trapping at Step Edges

We report step edge-induced localized defects suppressing subsequent antiphase boundary formation in the bulk structure of a trilayer oxide heterostructure. The heterostructure encompasses a layer of La0.66Sr0.34MnO3 sandwiched between a superconducting La1.84Sr0.16CuO4 bottom layer and an insulating La2CuO4 top layer. The combination of a minor a-axis mismatch (0.11 Å) and a pronounced c-axis mismatch (2.73 Å) at the step edges leads to the emergence of localized defects exclusively forming at the step edge. Employing atomically resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy maps, we discern the electronic state of those structures in the second La0.66Sr0.34MnO3 unit cell near the step edge. In particular, a reduction in the pre-edge region of the O-K edge indicates the formation of oxygen vacancies induced by the strained step edge. This study underscores our capability to control defects at the nanoscale.

Probing Surface Transformations of Lanthanum Nickelate Electrocatalysts during Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Monitoring the spontaneous reconstruction of the surface of metal oxides under electrocatalytic reaction conditions is critical to identifying the active sites and establishing structure-activity relationships. Here, we report on a self-terminated surface reconstruction of Ruddlesden-Popper lanthanum nickel oxide (La2NiO4+δ) that occurs spontaneously during reaction with alkaline electrolyte species. Using a combination of high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (HR-STEM), surface-sensitive X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (sXAS), as well as electrochemical techniques, we identify the structure of the reconstructed surface layer as an amorphous (oxy)hydroxide phase that features abundant under-coordinated nickel sites. No further amorphization of the crystalline oxide lattice (beyond the ∼2 nm thick layer formed) was observed during oxygen evolution reaction (OER) cycling experiments. Notably, the formation of the reconstructed surface layer increases the material's oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity by a factor of 45 when compared to that of the pristine crystalline surface. In contrast, a related perovskite phase, i.e., LaNiO3, did not show noticeable surface reconstruction, and also no increase in its OER activity was observed. This work provides detailed insight into a surface reconstruction behavior dictated by the crystal structure of the parent oxide and highlights the importance of surface dynamics under reaction conditions.

Photocatalytic Activity of BaAl2O4 for Water Purification

Degradation of dyes under natural light sources is one of the most active research areas in basic science for greener technology. In this context, the photocatalytic activity of semiconductors has received massive attention in solving water treatment-related issues as these possess enormous potential for degrading organic impurities. Here, we report that barium aluminate (BaAl2O4, BAO), which has been extensively studied for photoluminescence applications, is found to be a highly potent candidate for photocatalytic activities. We have explored the degradation of dyes (meant for water purification) by using the photocatalytic properties of pure and Dy- and Yb-codoped BAO. Crystal structure, electron microscopy, and Raman analysis of the autocombustion-synthesized pure and codoped BAO samples revealed significant morphological changes such as increased particle size and stabilization of rod-like structures. UV-vis absorbance measurements confirm the presence of multiple bandgaps in the BAO samples, which is substantiated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements. Photocatalytic degradation studies of methylene blue (MB) dye (with different catalyst concentrations, dopings, and MB dye concentrations) have been carried out by using BAO. The kinetics of the photocatalytic degradation measurements has been explained by the Boltzmann distribution function, and the fastest (in less than 40 min), with more than 99% degradation of MB impurity, is reported here for the first time in BAO compounds. Synthesized BAO samples show excellent cyclic stability, which is essential for their potential applications in environmental remediation. The trade-off between the enhancement of surface area and increased particle size is considered the key parameter for controlling the photocatalytic performance of the BAO catalyst after Dy and Yb codopings.

Mechanochemically Enabled Metastable Niobium Tungsten Oxides

Metastable compounds have greatly expanded the synthesizable compositions of solid-state materials and have attracted enormous amounts of attention in recent years. Especially, mechanochemically enabled metastable materials synthesis has been very successful in realizing cation-disordered materials with highly simple crystal structures, such as rock salts. Application of the same strategy for other structural types, especially for non-close-packed structures, is peculiarly underexplored. Niobium tungsten oxides (NbWOs), a class of materials that have been under the spotlight because of their diverse structural varieties and promising electrochemical and thermoelectric properties, are ideally suited to fill such a knowledge gap. In this work, we develop a new series of metastable NbWOs and realize one with a fully cation-disordered structure. Furthermore, we find that metastable NbWOs transform to a cation-disordered cubic structure when applied as a Li-ion battery anode, highlighting an intriguing non-close-packed-close-packed conversion process, as evidenced in various physicochemical characterizations, in terms of diffraction, electronic, and vibrational structures. Finally, by comparing the cation-disordered NbWO with other trending cation-disordered oxides, we raise a few key structural features for cation disorder and suggest a few possible research opportunities for this field.

Phosphonic acid anchored tripodal molecular films on indium tin oxide

Whereas monopodal self-assembling monolayers (SAMs) are most frequently used for surface and interface engineering, tripodal SAMs are less popular due to the difficulty in achieving a reliable and homogeneous bonding configuration. In this context, in the present study, the potential of phosphonic acid (PA) decorated triptycene (TripPA) for formation of SAMs on oxide substrates was studied, using indium tin oxide (ITO) as a representative and application-relevant test support. A combination of several complementary experimental techniques was applied and a suitable monopodal reference system, benzylphosphonic acid (PPA), was used. The resulting data consistently show that TripPA forms well-defined, densely packed, and nearly contamination-free tripodal SAMs on ITO, with the similar parameters and properties as the monopodal reference system. Modification of wetting properties and work function of ITO by non-substituted and cyano-decorated TripPA SAMs was demonstrated, showing a potential of this tripodal system for surface engineering of oxide substrates.

Low-coordination Nanocrystalline Copper-based Catalysts through Theory-guided Electrochemical Restructuring for Selective CO2 Reduction to Ethylene

Revealing the dynamic reconstruction process and tailoring advanced copper (Cu) catalysts is of paramount significance for promoting the conversion of CO2 into ethylene (C2H4), paving the way for carbon neutralization and facilitating renewable energy storage. In this study, we initially employed density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to elucidate the restructuring behavior of a catalyst under electrochemical conditions and delineated its restructuring patterns. Leveraging insights into this restructuring behavior, we devised an efficient, low-coordination copper-based catalyst. The resulting synthesized catalyst demonstrated an impressive Faradaic efficiency (FE) exceeding 70 % for ethylene generation at a current density of 800 mA cm-2. Furthermore, it showed robust stability, maintaining consistent performance for 230 hours at a cell voltage of 3.5 V in a full-cell system. Our research not only deepens the understanding of the active sites involved in designing efficient carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) catalysts but also advances CO2 electrolysis technologies for industrial application.

Acid-Dependent Charge Transport in a Solution-Processed 2D Conductive Metal-Organic Framework

The development of conductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) presents a unique challenge in materials chemistry because it is unclear how to dope them. Here, we demonstrate that the inclusion of pendant amines on hexahydroxytriphenylene linkages results in two-dimensional (2D) polycrystalline frameworks Cu3(HHTATP)2, isostructural to its Cu3(HHTP)2 parent, and exhibits the highest electrical conductivity of 1.21 S/cm among 2D MOFs featuring CuO4 metal nodes. Moreover, the bulk material can be treated with acid, resulting in a protonation-dependent increase in the conductivity. By spin-coating the acidic solution, we fabricated large-area thin films and collectively demonstrated an intuitive route to solution-processable, dopable, conductive MOFs.

Label-Free In Situ Chemical Characterization of Amyloid Plaques in Human Brain Tissues

The accumulation of amyloid plaques and increased brain redox burdens are neuropathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease. Altered metabolism of essential biometals is another feature of Alzheimer's, with amyloid plaques representing sites of disturbed metal homeostasis. Despite these observations, metal-targeting disease treatments have not been therapeutically effective to date. A better understanding of amyloid plaque composition and the role of the metals associated with them is critical. To establish this knowledge, the ability to resolve chemical variations at nanometer length scales relevant to biology is essential. Here, we present a methodology for the label-free, nanoscale chemical characterization of amyloid plaques within human Alzheimer's disease tissue using synchrotron X-ray spectromicroscopy. Our approach exploits a C-H carbon absorption feature, consistent with the presence of lipids, to visualize amyloid plaques selectively against the tissue background, allowing chemical analysis to be performed without the addition of amyloid dyes that alter the native sample chemistry. Using this approach, we show that amyloid plaques contain elevated levels of calcium, carbonates, and iron compared to the surrounding brain tissue. Chemical analysis of iron within plaques revealed the presence of chemically reduced, low-oxidation-state phases, including ferromagnetic metallic iron. The zero-oxidation state of ferromagnetic iron determines its high chemical reactivity and so may contribute to the redox burden in the Alzheimer's brain and thus drive neurodegeneration. Ferromagnetic metallic iron has no established physiological function in the brain and may represent a target for therapies designed to lower redox burdens in Alzheimer's disease. Additionally, ferromagnetic metallic iron has magnetic properties that are distinct from the iron oxide forms predominant in tissue, which might be exploitable for the in vivo detection of amyloid pathologies using magnetically sensitive imaging. We anticipate that this label-free X-ray imaging approach will provide further insights into the chemical composition of amyloid plaques, facilitating better understanding of how plaques influence the course of Alzheimer's disease.

Charge-Transfer-Induced Interfacial Ferromagnetism in Ferromagnet-Free Oxide Heterostructures

Due to the strong interlayer coupling between multiple degrees of freedom, oxide heterostructures have demonstrated exotic properties that are not shown by their bulk counterparts. One of the most interesting properties is ferromagnetism at the interface formed between "nonferromagnetic" compounds. Here we report on the interfacial ferromagnetic phase induced in the superlattices consisting of the two paramagnetic oxides CaRuO3 (CRO) and LaNiO3 (LNO). By varying the sublayer thickness in the superlattice period, we demonstrate that the ferromagnetic order has been established in both CaRuO3 and LaNiO3 sublayers, exhibiting an identical Curie temperature of ∼75 K. The X-ray absorption spectra suggest a strong charge transfer from Ru to Ni at the interface, triggering superexchange interactions between Ru/Ni ions and giving rise to the emergent ferromagnetic phase. Moreover, the X-ray linear dichroism spectra reveal the preferential occupancy of the d3z2-r2 orbital for the Ru ions and the dx2-y2 orbital for the Ni ions in the heterostructure. This leads to different magnetic anisotropy of the superlattices when they are dominated by CRO or LNO sublayers. This work clearly demonstrates a charge-transfer-induced interfacial ferromagnetic phase in the whole ferromagnet-free oxide heterostructures, offering a feasible way to tailor oxide materials for desired functionalities.

Accurate, Uncertainty-Aware Classification of Molecular Chemical Motifs from Multimodal X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

Accurate classification of molecular chemical motifs from experimental measurement is an important problem in molecular physics, chemistry, and biology. In this work, we present neural network ensemble classifiers for predicting the presence (or lack thereof) of 41 different chemical motifs on small molecules from simulated C, N, and O K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra. Our classifiers not only achieve class-balanced accuracies of more than 0.95 but also accurately quantify uncertainty. We also show that including multiple XANES modalities improves predictions notably on average, demonstrating a "multimodal advantage" over any single modality. In addition to structure refinement, our approach can be generalized to broad applications with molecular design pipelines.

Impact of Synthesis Parameters upon the Electronic Structure in PVD-Deposited CdxZn1-xO Composite Thin Films: An XPS-XANES Investigation

The impact of different synthesis parameters, such as thickness, postsynthesis annealing temperature, and oxygen gas flow rate, upon the electronic structure is discussed in detail in the present experimental investigation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy techniques are used to evaluate the surface electronic properties along with the presence and stability of the CdO2 surface oxide in CdxZn1-xO (x = 0.4) composite thin films. The thin films were synthesized with varying thicknesses using a Cd0.4Zn0.6O (CZO) ceramic and Cd0.4Zn0.6 (CZ) metallic targets and oxygen gas flow rates during magnetron sputtering. The Zn L3,2 edge and O K edge XANES spectra are affected by the oxygen gas flow rate. For the zero rate, an increase in intensity is observed in the Zn L3,2 edge, and notable changes occur in the overall spectral features of the O K edge. In the films synthesized in the presence of oxygen, highly probable O 2p → antibonding Zn 3d electronic transitions decrease the probability of the Zn 2p1/2 → antibonding Zn 3d electronic transition by filling the vacant antibonding Zn 3d states, leading to the reduction in overall intensity in the Zn L3,2 edge. Scanning electron microscopy reveals grain growth with increasing annealing temperature. The annealing induces orbital hybridization, generating new electronic states with higher transition probabilities and intensity enhancement in both Zn L3,2 and O K edges. The presence of the CdO2 surface phase is confirmed by analyzing the Cd 3d5/2 and O 1s XPS core levels. The CdO2 surface phase is observed in the films synthesized using the CZO target for all thicknesses, while the CZ target is only observed for higher thicknesses. Further postsynthesis annealing treatment results in the disappearance of the CdO2 phase. The CdO2 surface phase can be controlled by varying the film thickness and postsynthesis annealing temperature.

Strain-modulated Ru-O Covalency in Ru-Sn Oxide Enabling Efficient and Stable Water Oxidation in Acidic Solution

RuO2 is one of the benchmark electrocatalysts used as the anode material in proton exchange membrane water electrolyser. However, its long-term stability is compromised due to the participation of lattice oxygen and metal dissolution during oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this work, weakened covalency of Ru-O bond was tailored by introducing tensile strain to RuO6 octahedrons in a binary Ru-Sn oxide matrix, prohibiting the participation of lattice oxygen and the dissolution of Ru, thereby significantly improving the long-term stability. Moreover, the tensile strain also optimized the adsorption energy of intermediates and boosted the OER activity. Remarkably, the RuSnOx electrocatalyst exhibited excellent OER activity in 0.1 M HClO4 and required merely 184 mV overpotential at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 . Moreover, it delivered a current density of 10 mA cm-2 for at least 150 h with negligible potential increase. This work exemplifies an effective strategy for engineering Ru-based catalysts with extraordinary performance toward water splitting.

Are 4f-Orbitals Engaged in Covalent Bonding Between Lanthanides and Triphenylphosphine Oxide? An Oxygen K-Edge X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy and Density Functional Theory Study

The bonding covalency between trivalent lanthanides (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Eu, Gd) and triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO) is studied by X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the LnCl3(TPPO)3 complexes. The O, P, and Cl K-edge XAS for the single crystals of LnCl3(TPPO)3 were collected, and the spectra were interpreted based on DFT calculations. The O and P K-edge XAS spectra showed no significant change across the Ln series in the LnCl3(TPPO)3 complexes, unlike the Cl K-edge XAS spectra. The experimental O K-edge XAS spectra suggest no mixing between the Ln 4f- and the O 2p-orbitals in the LnCl3(TPPO)3 complexes. DFT calculations indicate that the amount of the O 2p character per Ln-O bond is less than 0.1% in the Ln 4f-based orbitals in all of the LnCl3(TPPO)3 complexes. The experimental spectra and theoretical calculations demonstrate that Ln 4f-orbitals are not engaged in the covalent bonding of lanthanides with TPPO, which contrasts the involvement of U 5f-orbitals in covalent bonding in the UO2Cl2(TPPO)2 complex. Results in this work reinforce our previous speculation that bonding covalency is potentially responsible for the extractability of monodentate organophosphorus ligands toward metal ions.

Cobalt-free layered perovskites RBaCuFeO5+δ (R = 4f lanthanide) as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction

Co-based perovskite oxides are intensively studied as promising catalysts for electrochemical water splitting in an alkaline environment. However, the increasing Co demand by the battery industry is pushing the search for Co-free alternatives. Here we report a systematic study of the Co-free layered perovskite family RBaCuFeO5+δ (R = 4f lanthanide), where we uncover the existence of clear correlations between electrochemical properties and several physicochemical descriptors. Using a combination of advanced neutron and X-ray synchrotron techniques with ab initio DFT calculations we demonstrate and rationalize the positive impact of a large R ionic radius in their oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity. We also reveal that, in these materials, Fe3+ is the transition metal cation the most prone to donate electrons. We also show that similar R3+/Ba2+ ionic radii favor the incorporation and mobility of oxygen in the layered perovskite structure and increase the number of available O diffusion paths, which have an additional, positive impact on both, the electric conductivity and the OER process. An unexpected result is the observation of a clear surface reconstruction exclusively in oxygen-rich samples (δ > 0), a fact that could be related to their superior OER activity. The encouraging intrinsic OER values obtained for the most active electrocatalyst (LaBaCuFeO5.49), together with the possibility of industrially producing this material in nanocrystalline form should inspire the design of other Co-free oxide catalysts with optimal properties for electrochemical water splitting.

Spectromicroscopic study of the transformation with low energy ions of a hematite thin film into a magnetite/hematite epitaxial bilayer

The search of new properties in novel oxide heterostructures requires the exploration of new fabrication methods and the study, at the microscopic level, of the processes involved during the synthesis. We present a synchrotron-based spectromicroscopic investigation of a magnetite/hematite bilayer on Pt(111) grown in a two-step process by thermal evaporation and Low Energy Ion Bombardment (LEIB). The characterization includes the study of structural, electronic, chemical, and magnetic properties using X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS), Low Energy Electron Microscopy (LEEM), Photoemission Electron Microscopy (PEEM), or X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD). The aim is to obtain microscopic information of the thin film before, during, and after the ion bombardment. Ion bombardment gradually transforms the topmost layers of the hematite thin film into a defective sub-oxide, where magnetite nuclei grow and coalesce with increasing ion doses. Two rotational domains of magnetite coexist, which are typically a few tens of nanometres large and do not grow significantly with temperature annealings. The incoherent growth of the magnetite nuclei favours the formation of stable twin boundaries (TBs) and antiphase boundaries (APBs). Dichroic spectra show the characteristics of the ferrimagnetic (FiM) order of magnetite, and the spatial distribution of magnetic domains shows no apparent correlation with the structural image, displaying smooth domains separated by diffuse frontiers. These findings illustrate the importance of a spectromicroscopic characterization of novel oxide heterostructures for potential future applications.

Triggered lattice-oxygen oxidation with active-site generation and self-termination of surface reconstruction during water oxidation

To master the activation law and mechanism of surface lattice oxygen for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical for the development of efficient water electrolysis. Herein, we propose a strategy for triggering lattice-oxygen oxidation and enabling non-concerted proton-electron transfers during OER conditions by substituting Al in La0.3Sr0.7CoO3-δ. According to our experimental data and density functional theory calculations, the substitution of Al can have a dual effect of promoting surface reconstruction into active Co oxyhydroxides and activating deprotonation on the reconstructed oxyhydroxide, inducing negatively charged oxygen as an active site. This leads to a significant improvement in the OER activity. Additionally, Al dopants facilitate the preoxidation of active cobalt metal, which introduces great structural flexibility due to elevated O 2p levels. As OER progresses, the accumulation of oxygen vacancies and lattice-oxygen oxidation on the catalyst surface leads to the termination of Al3+ leaching, thereby preventing further reconstruction. We have demonstrated a promising approach to achieving tunable electrochemical reconstruction by optimizing the electronic structure and gained a fundamental understanding of the activation mechanism of surface oxygen sites.

Over-Stoichiometric Metastabilization of Cation-Disordered Rock Salts

Cation-disordered rock salts (DRXs) are well known for their potential to realize the goal of achieving scalable Ni- and Co-free high-energy-density Li-ion batteries. Unlike in most cathode materials, the disordered cation distribution may lead to more factors that control the electrochemistry of DRXs. An important variable that is not emphasized by research community is regarding whether a DRX exists in a more thermodynamically stable form or a more metastable form. Moreover, within the scope of metastable DRXs, over-stoichiometric DRXs, which allow relaxation of the site balance constraint of a rock salt structure, are particularly underexplored. In this work, these findings are reported in locating a generally applicable approach to "metastabilize" thermodynamically stable Mn-based DRXs to metastable ones by introducing Li over-stoichiometry. The over-stoichiometric metastabilization greatly stimulates more redox activities, enables better reversibility of Li deintercalation/intercalation, and changes the energy storage mechanism. The metastabilized DRXs can be transformed back to the thermodynamically stable form, which also reverts the electrochemical properties, further contrasting the two categories of DRXs. This work enriches the structural and compositional space of DRX families and adds new pathways for rationally tuning the properties of DRX cathodes.

Exposing the Oxygen-Centered Radical Character of the Tetraoxido Ruthenium(VIII) Cation [RuO4 ]. Chemphyschem 2023;24:e202300390. [PMID: 37589334 DOI: 10.1002/cphc.202300390]

The tetraoxido ruthenium(VIII) radical cation, [RuO4 ]+ , should be a strong oxidizing agent, but has been difficult to produce and investigate so far. In our X-ray absorption spectroscopy study, in combination with quantum-chemical calculations, we show that [RuO4 ]+ , produced via oxidation of ruthenium cations by ozone in the gas phase, forms the oxygen-centered radical ground state. The oxygen-centered radical character of [RuO4 ]+ is identified by the chemical shift at the ruthenium M3 edge, indicative of ruthenium(VIII), and by the presence of a characteristic low-energy transition at the oxygen K edge, involving an oxygen-centered singly-occupied molecular orbital, which is suppressed when the oxygen-centered radical is quenched by hydrogenation of [RuO4 ]+ to the closed-shell [RuO4 H]+ ion. Hydrogen-atom abstraction from methane is calculated to be only slightly less exothermic for [RuO4 ]+ than for [OsO4 ]+ .

Strengths of covalent bonds in LnO2 determined from O K-edge XANES spectra using a Hubbard model

In LnO2 (Ln = Ce, Pr, and Tb), the amount of Ln 4f mixing with O 2p orbitals was determined by O K-edge X-ray absorption near edge (XANES) spectroscopy and was similar to the amount of mixing between the Ln 5d and O 2p orbitals. This similarity was unexpected since the 4f orbitals are generally perceived to be "core-like" and can only weakly stabilize ligand orbitals through covalent interactions. While the degree of orbital mixing seems incompatible with this view, orbital mixing alone does not determine the degree of stabilization provided by a covalent interaction. We used a Hubbard model to determine this stabilization from the energies of the O 2p to 4f, 5d(eg), and 5d(t2g) excited charge-transfer states and the amount of excited state character mixed into the ground state, which was determined using Ln L3-edge and O K-edge XANES spectroscopy. The largest amount of stabilization due to mixing between the Ln 4f and O 2p orbitals was 1.6(1) eV in CeO2. While this energy is substantial, the stabilization provided by mixing between the Ln 5d and O 2p orbitals was an order of magnitude greater consistent with the perception that covalent bonding in the lanthanides is largely driven by the 5d orbitals rather than the 4f orbitals.

Symmetry-Breaking p-Block Antimony Single Atoms Trigger N-Bridged Titanium Sites for Electrocatalytic Nitrogen Reduction with High Efficiency

The electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (eNRR) under mild conditions emerges as a promising approach to produce ammonia (NH3) compared to the typical Haber-Bosch process. Herein, we design an asymmetrically coordinated p-block antimony single-atom catalyst immobilized on nitrogen-doped Ti3C2Tx (Sb SA/N-Ti3C2Tx) for eNRR, which exhibits ultrahigh NH3 yield (108.3 μg h-1 mgcat-1) and excellent Faradaic efficiency (41.2%) at -0.3 V vs RHE. Complementary in situ spectroscopies with theoretical calculations reveal that the nitrogen-bridged two titanium atoms triggered by an adjacent asymmetrical Sb-N1C2 moiety act as the active sites for facilitating the protonation of the rate-determining step from *N2 to *N2H and the kinetic conversion of key intermediates during eNRR. Moreover, the introduction of Sb-N1C2 promotes the formation of oxygen vacancies to expose more titanium sites. This work presents a strategy for single-atom-decorated ultrathin two-dimensional materials with the aim of simultaneously enhancing NH3 yield and Faradaic efficiency for electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction.

Properties of tin oxide films grown by atomic layer deposition from tin tetraiodide and ozone

Polycrystalline SnO2 thin films were grown by atomic layer deposition (ALD) on SiO2/Si(100) substrates from SnI4 and O3. Suitable evaporation temperatures for the SnI4 precursor as well as the relationship between growth per cycle and substrate temperature were determined. Crystal growth in the films in the temperature range of 225-600 °C was identified. Spectroscopic analyses revealed low amounts of residual iodine and implied the formation of single-phase oxide in the films grown at temperatures above 300 °C. Appropriateness of the mentioned precursor system to the preparation of SnO2 films was established.

Intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetism in a two-dimensional semiconducting metal-organic framework

The development of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic semiconductors with room-temperature ferromagnetism is a significant challenge in materials science and is important for the development of next-generation spintronic devices. Herein, we demonstrate that a 2D semiconducting antiferromagnetic Cu-MOF can be endowed with intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetic coupling using a ligand cleavage strategy to regulate the inner magnetic interaction within the Cu dimers. Using the element-selective X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) technique, we provide unambiguous evidence for intrinsic ferromagnetism. Exhaustive structural characterizations confirm that the change of magnetic coupling is caused by the increased distance between Cu atoms within a Cu dimer. Theoretical calculations reveal that the ferromagnetic coupling is enhanced with the increased Cu-Cu distance, which depresses the hybridization between 3d orbitals of nearest Cu atoms. Our work provides an effective avenue to design and fabricate MOF-based semiconducting room-temperature ferromagnetic materials and promotes their practical applications in next-generation spintronic devices.

Defect-Promoted Ni-Based Layer Double Hydroxides with Enhanced Deprotonation Capability for Efficient Biomass Electrooxidation

Ni-based hydroxides are promising electrocatalysts for biomass oxidation reactions, supplanting the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to lower overpotentials while producing value-added chemicals. The identification and subsequent engineering of their catalytically active sites are essential to facilitate these anodic reactions. Herein, the proportional relationship between catalysts' deprotonation propensity and Faradic efficiency of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF)-to-2,5 furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA, FEFDCA ) is revealed by thorough density functional theory (DFT) simulations and atomic-scale characterizations, including in situ synchrotron diffraction and spectroscopy methods. The deprotonation capability of ultrathin layer-double hydroxides (UT-LDHs) is regulated by tuning the covalency of metal (M)-oxygen (O) motifs through defect site engineering and selection of M3+ co-chemistry. NiMn UT-LDHs show an ultrahigh FEFDCA of 99% at 1.37 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and retain a high FEFDCA of 92.7% in the OER-operating window at 1.52 V, about 2× that of NiFe UT-LDHs (49.5%) at 1.52 V. Ni-O and Mn-O motifs function as dual active sites for HMF electrooxidation, where the continuous deprotonation of Mn-OH sites plays a dominant role in achieving high selectivity while suppressing OER at high potentials. The results showcase a universal concept of modulating competing anodic reactions in aqueous biomass electrolysis by electronically engineering the deprotonation behavior of metal hydroxides, anticipated to be translatable across various biomass substrates.

Cascade NH3 Oxidation and N2O Decomposition via Bifunctional Co and Cu Catalysts

The selective catalytic oxidation of NH3 (NH3-SCO) to N2 is an important reaction for the treatment of diesel engine exhaust. Co3O4 has the highest activity among non-noble metals but suffers from N2O release. Such N2O emissions have recently been regulated due to having a 300× higher greenhouse gas effect than CO2. Here, we design CuO-supported Co3O4 as a cascade catalyst for the selective oxidation of NH3 to N2. The NH3-SCO reaction on CuO-Co3O4 follows a de-N2O pathway. Co3O4 activates gaseous oxygen to form N2O. The high redox property of the CuO-Co3O4 interface promotes the breaking of the N-O bond in N2O to form N2. The addition of CuO-Co3O4 to the Pt-Al2O3 catalyst reduces the full NH3 conversion temperature by 50 K and improves the N2 selectivity by 20%. These findings provide a promising strategy for reducing N2O emissions and will contribute to the rational design and development of non-noble metal catalysts.

Studying Surface Chemistry of Mixed Conducting Perovskite Oxide Electrodes with Synchrotron-Based Soft X-rays

A fundamental understanding of the electrochemical reactions and surface chemistry at the solid-gas interface in situ and operando is critical for electrode materials applied in electrochemical and catalytic applications. Here, the surface reactions and surface composition of a model of mixed ionic and electronic conducting (MIEC) perovskite oxide, (La0.8Sr0.2)0.95Cr0.5Fe0.5O3-δ (LSCrF8255), were investigated in situ using synchrotron-based near-ambient pressure (AP) X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and near-edge X-ray absorption fine-structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS). The measurements were conducted with a surface temperature of 500 °C under 1 mbar of dry oxygen and water vapor, to reflect the implementation of the materials for oxygen reduction/evolution and H2O electrolysis in the applications such as solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and electrolyzers. Our direct experimental results demonstrate that, rather than the transition metal (TM) cations, the surface lattice oxygen is the significant redox active species under both dry oxygen and water vapor environments. It was proven that the electron holes formed in dry oxygen have a strong oxygen character. Meanwhile, a relatively higher concentration of surface oxygen vacancies was observed on the sample measured in water vapor. We further showed that in water vapor, the adsorption and dissociation of H2O onto the perovskite surface were through forming hydroxyl groups. In addition, the concentration of Sr surface species was found to increase over time in dry oxygen due to Sr surface segregation, with the presence of oxygen holes on the surface serving as an additional driving force. Comparatively, less Sr contents were observed on the sample in water vapor, which could be due to the volatility of Sr(OH)2. A secondary phase was also observed, which exhibited an enrichment in B-site cations, particularly in Fe and relatively in Cr, and a deficiency in A-site cation, notably in La and relatively in Sr. The findings and methodology of this study allow for the quantification of surface defect chemistry and surface composition evolution, providing crucial understanding and design guidelines in the electrocatalytic activity and durability of electrodes for efficient conversions of energy and fuels.

Integrating Explainability into Graph Neural Network Models for the Prediction of X-ray Absorption Spectra

The use of sophisticated machine learning (ML) models, such as graph neural networks (GNNs), to predict complex molecular properties or all kinds of spectra has grown rapidly. However, ensuring the interpretability of these models' predictions remains a challenge. For example, a rigorous understanding of the predicted X-ray absorption spectrum (XAS) generated by such ML models requires an in-depth investigation of the respective black-box ML model used. Here, this is done for different GNNs based on a comprehensive, custom-generated XAS data set for small organic molecules. We show that a thorough analysis of the different ML models with respect to the local and global environments considered in each ML model is essential for the selection of an appropriate ML model that allows a robust XAS prediction. Moreover, we employ feature attribution to determine the respective contributions of various atoms in the molecules to the peaks observed in the XAS spectrum. By comparing this peak assignment to the core and virtual orbitals from the quantum chemical calculations underlying our data set, we demonstrate that it is possible to relate the atomic contributions via these orbitals to the XAS spectrum.

Unveiling Oxygen K-Edge and Cobalt L-Edge Electron Energy Loss Spectra of Cobalt Hydroxide and Their Evolution under Electron Beam Irradiation

Cobalt hydroxides, Co(OH)2, have attracted considerable attention due to their diverse applications in the fields of energy and the environment. However, probing the electronic structure of Co(OH)2 is challenging, mainly due to its sensitivity to electron beam irradiation. In this study, we report the unperturbed O K-edge and Co L-edge for Co(OH)2 by electron beam damage and investigate the electronic structure transformation of Co(OH)2 under electron beam irradiation, using low current electron energy loss spectroscopy. In particular, the O K-edge pre-peak at 530 eV, which is not found in the undamaged Co(OH)2, begins to appear with an increasing electron beam current. In addition, the Co L-edge peak shifts to a higher energy, close to Co3O4, indicating that the localized phase transition within Co(OH)2 leads to the formation of Co3O4.

Origin of Enhancement of Orbital Magnetic Moment in SiO2-Coated Fe3O4 Nanocomposites Studied by X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism

In this study, magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) were dispersed uniformly by varying the thickness of the SiO2 coating, and their electronic and magnetic properties were investigated. X-ray diffraction confirmed the structural configuration of monophase inverse-spinel Fe3O4 NPs in nanometer size. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the formation of proper nonporous crystallite particles with a clear core-shell structure with silica on the surface of Fe3O4 NPs. The absorption mechanism studied through the zeta potential indicates that SiO2-coated Fe3O4 nanocomposites (SiO2@Fe3O4 NCs) possess electrostatic interactions to control their agglomeration in stabilizing suspensions by providing a protective shield of amorphous SiO2 on the oxide surface. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy images demonstrate a spherical morphology having an average grain diameter of ∼11-17 nm with increasing thickness of SiO2 coating with the addition of a quantitative presence and proportion of elements determined through elemental mapping and electron energy loss spectroscopy studies. Synchrotron-based element-specific soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) techniques have been involved in the bulk-sensitive total fluorescence yield mode to understand the origin of magnetization in SiO2@Fe3O4 NCs. The magnetization hysteresis of Fe3O4 was determined by XMCD. At room temperature, the magnetic coercivity (Hc) is as high as 1 T, which is about 2 times more than the value of the thin film and about 5 times more pronounced than that of NPs. For noninteracting single-domain NPs with the Hc spread from 1 to 3 T, the Stoner-Wohlfarth model provided an intriguing explanation for the hysteresis curve. These curves determine the different components of Fe oxides present in the samples that derive the remnant magnetization involved in each oxidation state of Fe and clarify which Fe component is responsible for the resultant magnetism and magnetocrystalline anisotropy based on noninteracting single-domain particles.

Bounding [AnO2]2+ (An = U, Np) covalency by simulated O K-edge and An M-edge X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy

Restricted active space simulations are shown to accurately reproduce and characterise both O K-edge and U M4,5-edge spectra of uranyl in excellent agreement with experimental peak positions and are extended to the Np analogue. Analysis of bonding orbital composition in the ground and O K-edge core-excited states demonstrates that metal contribution is underestimated in the latter. In contrast, An M4/5-edge core-excited states produce bonding orbital compositions significantly more representative of those in the ground state. Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules analysis is employed to explain the discrepancy between K- and M-edge data and demonstrates that the location of the core-hole impacts the pattern of electron localisation in core-excited states. An apparent contradiction to this behaviour in neptunyl is rationalised in terms interelectronic repulsion between the unpaired 5f electron and the excited core-electron.

Nanoscale Size Effects on Push-Pull Fe-O Hybridization through the Multiferroic Transition of Perovskite ϵ-Fe2O3

Multiferroics have tremendous potential to revolutionize logic and memory devices through new functionalities and energy efficiencies. To reach their optimal capabilities will require better understanding and enhancement of the ferroic orders and couplings. Herein, we use ϵ-Fe2O3 as a model system with a simplifying single magnetic ion. Using 15, 20, and 30 nm nanoparticles, we identify that a modified and size-dependent Fe-O hybridization changes the spin-orbit coupling and strengthens it via longer octahedra chains. Fe-O hybridization is modified through the incommensurate phase, with a unique two-step rearrangement of the electronic environment through this transition with attraction and then repulsion of electrons around tetrahedral Fe. Interestingly, size effects disappear in the high-temperature phase where the strongest Fe-O hybridization occurs. By manipulating this hybridization, we tune and control the multiferroic properties.
