Functional Supramolecular Polymeric Networks: The Marriage of Covalent Polymers and Macrocycle-Based Host–Guest Interactions

Stabilized, ROS-sensitive β-cyclodextrin-grafted hyaluronic supramolecular nanocontainers for CD44-targeted anticancer drug delivery

Hyaluronic acid (HA)-based tumor microenvironment-responsive nanocontainers are attractive candidates for anticancer drug delivery due to HA's excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, and CD44-targeting properties. Nevertheless, the consecutive synthesis of stabilized, stealthy, responsive HA-based multicomponent nanomedicines generally requires multi-step preparation and purification procedures, leading to batch-to-batch variation and scale-up difficulties. To develop a facile yet robust strategy for promoted translations, a silica monomer containing a cross-linkable diethoxysilyl unit was prepared to enable in situ crosslinking without any additives. Further combined with the host-guest inclusion complexation between β-cyclodextrin-grafted HA (HA-CD) and ferrocene-functionalized polymers, ferrocene-terminated poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (Fc-POEGMA) and Fc-terminated poly(ε-caprolactone)-b-poly(3-(diethoxymethylsilyl)propyl(2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl) carbamate) (Fc-PCL-b-PDESPMA), a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-sensitive supramolecular polymer construct, Fc-POEGMA/Fc-PCL-b-PDESPMA@HA-CD was readily fabricated to integrate stealthy POEGMA, tumor active targeting HA, and an in situ cross-linkable PDESPMA sequence. Supramolecular amphiphilic copolymers with two different POEGMA contents of 25 wt% (P1) and 20 wt% (P2) were prepared via a simple physical mixing process, affording two core-crosslinked (CCL) micelles via an in situ sol-gel process of ethoxysilyl groups. The P1-based CCL micelles show not only desired colloidal stability against high dilution, but also an intracellular ROS-mimicking environment-induced particulate aggregation that is beneficial for promoted intracellular release of the loaded cargoes. Most importantly, P1-based nanomedicines exhibited greater cytotoxicity in CD44 receptor-positive HeLa cells than that in CD44 receptor-negative MCF-7 cells. Overall, this work developed HA-based nanomedicines with sufficient extracellular colloidal stability and efficient intracellular destabilization properties for enhanced anticancer drug delivery via smart integration of in situ crosslinking and supramolecular complexation.

Mechanical Regulation of Polymer Gels

The mechanical properties of polymer gels devote to emerging devices and machines in fields such as biomedical engineering, flexible bioelectronics, biomimetic actuators, and energy harvesters. Coupling network architectures and interactions has been explored to regulate supportive mechanical characteristics of polymer gels; however, systematic reviews correlating mechanics to interaction forces at the molecular and structural levels remain absent in the field. This review highlights the molecular engineering and structural engineering of polymer gel mechanics and a comprehensive mechanistic understanding of mechanical regulation. Molecular engineering alters molecular architecture and manipulates functional groups/moieties at the molecular level, introducing various interactions and permanent or reversible dynamic bonds as the dissipative energy. Molecular engineering usually uses monomers, cross-linkers, chains, and other additives. Structural engineering utilizes casting methods, solvent phase regulation, mechanochemistry, macromolecule chemical reactions, and biomanufacturing technology to construct and tailor the topological network structures, or heterogeneous modulus compositions. We envision that the perfect combination of molecular and structural engineering may provide a fresh view to extend exciting new perspectives of this burgeoning field. This review also summarizes recent representative applications of polymer gels with excellent mechanical properties. Conclusions and perspectives are also provided from five aspects of concise summary, mechanical mechanism, biofabrication methods, upgraded applications, and synergistic methodology.

Guest-Induced Conformational Transformations in Tiara[5]arene Crystals: A Pathway for Molecular Sieving

In pursuit of environmental sustainability and energy efficiency, assorted macrocyclic compounds have recently emerged as crystalline adsorbents for the efficient molecular sieving of various chemical commodities. Herein, we delve into the conformational characteristics and solid-state packing modes of tiara[5]arenes (T[5]), a rim-differentiated pillar[5]arene derivative. By meticulously exploring the conformational space, we have successfully identified a multitude of distinct T[5] conformers within a relatively narrow energy range of 22 kJ/mol. This finding underscores the inherent conformational flexibility of this macrocyclic scaffold, enabling T[5] to adapt diverse packing arrangements in the solid state. While solvent-free T[5] crystals do not exhibit permanent porosity, they undergo solvomorphic interconversions when exposed to various guest compounds. Our study demonstrates that T[5]-based crystalline materials exhibit a notable preference for selectively capturing aromatic and olefinic solvents, such as benzene, toluene, chlorobenzene, and cyclohexene, over their aliphatic hydrocarbon counterparts from equivalent volume liquid mixtures, achieving up to 10:1 selectivity between benzene and cyclohexane.

A Broadened Class of Donor-Acceptor Stacked Macrometallacyclic Adducts of Different Coinage Metals

A yet-outstanding supramolecular chemistry challenge is isolation of novel varieties of stacked complexes with finely-tuned donor-acceptor bonding and optoelectronic properties, as herein reported for binary adducts comprising two different cyclic trinuclear complexes (CTC@CTC'). Most previous attempts focused only on 1-2 factors among metal/ligand/substituent combinations, resulting in heterobimetallic complexes. Instead, here we show that, when all 3 factors are carefully considered, a broadened variety of CTC@CTC' stacked pairs with intuitively-enhanced intertrimer coordinate-covalent bonding strength and ligand-ligand/metal-ligand dispersion are attained (dM-M' 2.868(2) Å; ΔE>50 kcal/mol, an order of magnitude higher than aurophilic/metallophilic interactions). Significantly, CTC@CTC' pairs remain intact/strongly-bound even in solution (Keq 4.67×105 L/mol via NMR/UV-vis titrations), and the gas phase (mass spectrometry revealing molecular peaks for the entire CTC@CTC' units in sublimed samples), rather than simple co-crystal formation. Photo-/electro-luminescence studies unravel metal-centered phosphorescence useful for novel all metal-organic light-emitting diodes (MOLEDs) optoelectronic device concepts. This work manifests systematic design of supramolecular bonding and multi-faceted spectral properties of pure metal-organic macrometallacyclic donor/acceptor (inorganic/inorganic) stacks with remarkably-rich optoelectronic properties akin to well-established organic/organic and organic/inorganic analogues.

A Highly Efficient Supramolecular Polymer-Based Singlet Oxygen Generator for Photocatalytic Minisci Alkylation

Supramolecular polymers, with their specific functional units and structures, can effectively enhance the absorption and utilization of light energy, thereby facilitating more efficient photocatalytic organic reactions. In the present work, we constructed a supramolecular polymer consisting of benzothiazole derivatives (BTBP) and cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]). The BTBP monomer, known for its unique chemical structure and properties, has been found to exhibit a remarkable capability in generating singlet oxygen (1O2). As a result of the constraining impact of the macrocyclic molecule, the inclusion of CB[8] resulted in an effective enhancement in the ability to generate 1O2 while forming supramolecular polymer BTBP-CB[8]. When evaluating the quantum yield of 1O2 using Rose Bengal (RB) as a reference photosensitizer (75% in water), BTBP-CB[8] demonstrated an enhanced 1O2 quantum yield compared to BTBP, with an impressive yield of 152.4%, demonstrating that the formation of supramolecular polymer contributes to its ability to generate 1O2. Subsequently, BTBP-CB[8], a highly efficient 1O2 generator, was employed for the photocatalytic Minisci alkylation reaction, resulting in an impressive reaction yield of up to 89%. The supramolecular polymer strategies employed in the construction of photocatalytic systems have exhibited remarkable efficacy in the production of 1O2, underscoring their immense prospects in photocatalysis.

Fabrication of Azacrown Ether-Embedded Covalent Organic Frameworks for Enhanced Cathode Performance in Aqueous Ni-Zn Batteries

Crown ethers (CEs), known for their exceptional host-guest complexation, offer potential as linkers in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) for enhanced performance in catalysis and host-guest binding. However, their highly flexible conformation and low symmetry limit the diversity of CE-derived COFs. Here, we introduce a novel C3-symmetrical azacrown ether (ACE) building block, tris(pyrido)[18]crown-6 (TPy18C6), for COF fabrication (ACE-COF-1 and ACE-COF-2) via reticular synthesis. This approach enables precise integration of CEs into COFs, enhancing Ni2+ ion immobilization while maintaining crystallinity. The resulting Ni2+-doped COFs (Ni@ACE-COF-1 and Ni@ACE-COF-2) exhibit high discharge capacity (up to 1.27 mAh ⋅ cm-2 at 8 mA ⋅ cm-2) and exceptional cycling stability (>1000 cycles) as cathode materials in aqueous alkaline nickel-zinc batteries. This study serves as an exemplar of the seamless integration of macrocyclic chemistry and reticular chemistry, laying the groundwork for extending the macrocyclic-synthon driven strategy to a diverse array of COF building blocks, ultimately yielding advanced materials tailored for specific applications.

Aggregation-induced emission-active supramolecular polymers: from controlled preparation to applications

Supramolecular polymers are typical self-assemblies, in which repeating monomer units are bonded together with dynamic and reversible noncovalent interactions. Supramolecular polymers can combine the advantages of polymer science and supramolecular chemistry. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) means that a molecule remains faintly emissive in the dispersed state but intensively luminescent in a highly aggregated state. AIE has brought new opportunities and further development potential to the field of polymeric chemistry. The integration of AIE luminogens with supramolecular interactions can provide new vitality for supramolecular polymers. Therefore, it is essential for scientists to understand the preparation and applications of AIE-active supramolecular polymers. This review focuses on the recent advanced progress in the preparation of AIE-active supramolecular polymers. In addition, we summarize the newly developed supramolecular polymers with an AIE nature and their applications in chemical sensing, and in vitro and in vivo imaging, as well as the visualization of their structure and properties. Finally, the development trends and challenges of AIE-active supramolecular polymers are prospected.

Light-Up Fluorescence and Circularly Polarized Luminescence in Achiral Interlocked Framework via Adaptive Lone Pair-π Interaction Confinement

Interactions between lone pairs and aromatic π systems are significant across biology and self-assembled materials. Herein, employing an achiral confinement metal-organic framework (MOF) encapsulates guest molecules, it is successfully realized that lone pair (lp)-π interaction induces fluorescence "turn-on" and circularly polarized luminescence for the first time. The MOFs synthesized based on naphthalenediimide show nearly non-emissive, which can be light-up by introducing acetone or ester guests containing lone pairs-π interaction. Furthermore, the introduction of a series of lp-rich chiral esters induces supramolecular chirality as well as circularly polarized luminescence in achiral MOFs, while also observing chiral adaptability. This work first demonstrates the luminescence and chiral induction via lone pair electrons-π interactions, presenting a fresh paradigm for the advancement of chiroptical materials.

Hollow spherical nano-traps using pillararene-based polymer for efficient uranium extraction from seawater

Herein, a hollow spherical pillar[5]arene-based polymer (P5-AO) adsorbent was synthesized. The P5-AO adsorbent was capable of effectively capturing uranium from simulated seawater (139.5 mg g-1) and real seawater (8.1 mg g-1). We also elucidated the uranium adsorption mechanism of P5-AOvia extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). This study provides a novel direction for the development of uranium capture adsorbents.

Structural Rheology in the Development and Study of Complex Polymer Materials

The progress in polymer science and nanotechnology yields new colloidal and macromolecular objects and their combinations, which can be defined as complex polymer materials. The complexity may include a complicated composition and architecture of macromolecular chains, specific intermolecular interactions, an unusual phase behavior, and a structure of a multi-component polymer-containing material. Determination of a relation between the structure of a complex material, the structure and properties of its constituent elements, and the rheological properties of the material as a whole is the subject of structural rheology-a valuable tool for the development and study of novel materials. This work summarizes the author's structural-rheological studies of complex polymer materials for determining the conditions and rheo-manifestations of their micro- and nanostructuring. The complicated chemical composition of macromolecular chains and its role in polymer structuring via block segregation and cooperative hydrogen bonds in melt and solutions is considered using tri- and multiblock styrene/isoprene and vinyl acetate/vinyl alcohol copolymers. Specific molecular interactions are analyzed in solutions of cellulose; its acetate butyrate; a gelatin/carrageenan combination; and different acrylonitrile, oxadiazole, and benzimidazole copolymers. A homogeneous structuring may result from a conformational transition, a mesophase formation, or a macromolecular association caused by a complex chain composition or specific inter- and supramolecular interactions, which, however, may be masked by macromolecular entanglements when determining a rheological behavior. A heterogeneous structure formation implies a microscopic phase separation upon non-solvent addition, temperature change, or intense shear up to a macroscopic decomposition. Specific polymer/particle interactions have been examined using polyethylene oxide solutions, polyisobutylene melts, and cellulose gels containing solid particles of different nature, demonstrating the competition of macromolecular entanglements, interparticle interactions, and adsorption polymer/particle bonds in governing the rheological properties. Complex chain architecture has been considered using long-chain branched polybutylene-adipate-terephthalate and polyethylene melts, cross-linked sodium hyaluronate hydrogels, asphaltene solutions, and linear/highly-branched polydimethylsiloxane blends, showing that branching raises the viscosity and elasticity and can result in limited miscibility with linear isomonomer chains. Finally, some examples of composite adhesives, membranes, and greases as structured polymeric functional materials have been presented with the demonstration of the relation between their rheological and performance properties.

Engineering Supramolecular Hydrogels via Reversible Photoswitching of Cucurbit[8]uril-Spiropyran Complexation Stoichiometry

The integration of photoswitchable supramolecular units into hydrogels allows for spatiotemporal control over their nanoscale topological network and macroscale properties using light. Nevertheless, the current availability of photoswitchable supramolecular interactions for the development of such materials remains limited. Here, the molecular design of a novel photoswitchable cucurbit[8]uril-spiropyran host-guest complex exhibiting fast and reversible switching of binding ratios between 1:2 and 1:1 is reported. Photoswitchable complexation stoichiometries are rationally exploited as (de)crosslinking units in multiple polymers for the design of supramolecular hydrogels displaying highly dynamic and switchable features that are spatiotemporally controlled by light. The hydrogels exhibit rapid reversible mechanical softening-hardening upon alternating irradiation with blue and UV light, which is used to significantly accelerate and improve the efficiency of self-healing and shape-remolding of hydrogels. Furthermore, spiropyran endows such materials with unique reversible photochromic properties for reproducible patterning/erasing and information storage. Using a dual-light-assisted extrusion process, meter-scale hydrogel fibers with enhanced structural integrity and photoswitchable ionic conductivity are constructed and woven into various slidable knots and fluorescent shapes. This work represents an innovative molecular design strategy for advancing the development of spatiotemporally engineered supramolecular hydrogels using light and opens avenues for their prospective applications in dynamic materials and adaptive systems.

Accurate construction of monolayer, bilayer, sandwich bilayer, four-layer, multi-layer and chiral bilayer 2D pillararene-type supramolecular networks

The accurate construction of mono-, bi- and multi-layer networks has been an important challenge, especially for bi- and multi-layer networks. Monolayer, bilayer, sandwich bilayer, four-layer, and multi-layer two-dimensional pillararene-type metal-organic coordination networks have been constructed from functionalized pillar[5]arene and pillar[6]arene by utilizing the coordination interaction of cobalt and copper ions and combining with temperature control and guest induction. These two-dimensional coordination networks exhibit the excellent plasticity of pillararenes and structural variety, which are characterized by X-ray single crystal diffraction and PXRD, confirming that pillararenes units can function as excellent tunable scaffolds for structural regulation. Two-dimensional chiral double-layer structure products are also constructed from R- and S-pillar[6]arene, which are obtained by high-performance liquid chromatography. Atomic force microscopic imaging confirms the thicknesses of these networks. Moreover, these networks also exhibit high iodine adsorption capacity in aqueous environments at ambient temperature. The monolayer, bilayer, sandwich bilayer, four-layer and multi-layer structures of the pillararene-type networks represent a new facile supramolecular self-assembly strategy and platform for designing more mono-, bi- and multi-layer two-dimensional nanomaterials and chiral two-dimensional double-layer structures provide a new method for the construction of more two-dimensional chiral polymers.

Multi-strategy dynamic cross-linking to prepare EGCG-loaded multifunctional Pickering emulsion/α-cyclodextrin/konjac glucomannan composite films for ultra-durable preservation of perishable fruits

Developing multifunctional films with antibacterial, antioxidant, and sustained-release properties is a robust strategy for preventing contamination of perishable fruits by foodborne microorganisms. This study engineered a sustained-release biodegradable antibacterial film loaded with EGCG (Pickering emulsion (PE)/α-Cyclodextrin (α-CD)/Konjac glucomannan (KGM)) through multi-strategy cross-linking for fruit preservation. EGCG is stabilized using PE and incorporated into the α-CD/KGM inclusion compound; the unique structure of α-CD enhances EGCG encapsulation, while KGM provides the film toughness and surface adhesion. The composite film's physicochemical properties, antioxidant, bacteriostatic and biodegradability were studied. Results showed that Pickering emulsions with 3 % oil phase exhibited excellent stability. Moreover, α-CD introduction increased the loading and sustained release of EGCG from the film, and its concentration significantly affected the light transmission, thermal stability, mechanical strength, mechanical characteristics and antioxidant capacity of the composite membrane. Antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the composite film increased significantly with increasing α-CD concentration. Application of the film to tomatoes and strawberries effectively inhibited Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus growth, prolonging the shelf-life of the fruits. Notably, the composite film exhibits superior biodegradability in soil. This EGCG-loaded PE/α-CD/KGM composite film is anticipated to be a multifunctional antimicrobial preservation material with sustained-release properties and biodegradable for perishable food applications.

Polyurethane-Type Poly[3]rotaxanes Synthesized from Cyclodextrin-Based [3]Rotaxane Diol and Diisocyanates

Synthesis of polyurethane-type poly[3]rotaxanes is achieved by polyaddition between a cyclodextrin (CD)-based [3]rotaxane diol and various diisocyanate species, which provide a more defined structure compared to conventional polyrotaxane syntheses. In this study, hydroxyl groups on CDs of [3]rotaxane diol are initially acetylated, and deprotected after the polyaddition to introduce polyurethane backbone structure into polyrotaxane framework. Despite a relatively complicated chemical structure, [3]rotaxane diol monomer is successfully synthesized in a high yield (overall 67%) without any taxing purification process, which is beneficial for practical applications. The polymerization itself proceeds well under a standard polyaddition reaction condition to afford corresponding polyurethanes around 80% yield with Mn > 30 kDa. The poly[3]rotaxanes show different aggregation behavior or optical properties, whether or not acetyl groups are present, and are analyzed by XRD, SEM, and fluorescence measurements.

Highly stretchable dynamic hydrogels for soft multilayer electronics

Recent progress in the development of synthetic polymer networks has enabled the next generation of hydrogel-based machines and devices. The ability to mimic the mechanical and electrical properties of human tissue gives great potential toward the fields of bioelectronics and soft robotics. However, fabricating hydrogel devices that display high ionic conductivity while maintaining high stretchability and softness remains unmet. Here, we synthesize supramolecular poly(ionic) networks, which display high stretchability (>1500%), compressibility (>90%), and rapid self-recovery (<30 s), while achieving ionic conductivities of up to 0.1 S cm -1. Dynamic cross-links give rise to inter-layer adhesion and a stable interface is formed on account of ultrahigh binding affinities (>1013 M-2). Superior adherence between layers enabled the fabrication of an intrinsically stretchable hydrogel power source, paving the way for the next generation of multi-layer tissue mimetic devices.

Molecular Ball Joints: Mechanochemical Perturbation of Bullvalene Hardy-Cope Rearrangements in Polymer Networks

The solution-state fluxional behavior of bullvalene has fascinated physical organic and supramolecular chemists alike. Little effort, however, has been put into investigating bullvalene applications in bulk, partially due to difficulties in characterizing such dynamic systems. To address this knowledge gap, we herein probe whether bullvalene Hardy-Cope rearrangements can be mechanically perturbed in bulk polymer networks. We use dynamic mechanical analysis to demonstrate that the activation barrier to the glass transition process is significantly elevated for bullvalene-containing materials relative to "static" control networks. Furthermore, bullvalene rearrangements can be mechanically perturbed at low temperatures in the glassy region; such behavior facilitates energy dissipation (i.e., increased hysteresis energy) and polymer chain alignment to stiffen the material (i.e., increased Young's modulus) under load. Computational simulations corroborate our work that showcases bullvalene as a reversible "low-force" covalent mechanophore in the modulation of viscoelastic behavior.

Thermal-Sensitive Supramolecular Coordination Complex Formed by Orthogonal Metal Coordination and Host-Guest Interactions for an Electrical Thermometer

Supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) are popular for their structural diversity and functional adaptability, which make them suitable for a wide range of applications. Photophysical and mechanical performance of SCCs are the most attractive characteristics, yet their ionically conductive behavior and potential in electrical sensing have been rarely investigated. This study reports a well-designed SCC that integrates orthogonal metal coordination and host-guest interactions to achieve sensitive electrical thermal sensing. Owing to the thermodynamic nature of the host-guest interaction, the SCC encounters thermally induced disassembly, leading to significantly enhanced ion mobility and thus allowing for the precise detection of minor temperature variation. The SCC-based thermometer is then fabricated with the assistance of 3D printing and demonstrates good accuracy and reliability in monitoring human skin temperature and real-time temperature changes of mouse during the whole anesthesia and recovery process. Our findings provide an innovative strategy for developing electrical thermometers and expand the current application scope of SCCs in electrical sensing.

BINOL-Based Chiral Macrocycles and Cages

Chirality, a fundamental principle in chemistry, biology, and medicine, is prevalent in nature and in organisms. Chiral molecules, such as DNA, RNA, and proteins, are crucial in biomolecular synthesis, as well as in the development of functional materials. Among these, 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diol (BINOL) stands out for its stable chiral configuration, versatile functionality, and commercial availability. BINOL is widely employed in asymmetric catalysis and chiral materials. This review mainly focuses on recent research over the past five years concerning the use of BINOL derivatives for constructing chiral macrocycles and cages. Their contributions to chiral luminescence, enantiomeric separation, transmembrane transport, and asymmetric catalysis were examined.

Anion-Coordination Foldamer-Based Polymer Network: from Molecular Spring to Elastomer

Foldamer is a scaled-down version of coil spring, which can absorb and release energy by conformational change. Here, polymer networks with high density of molecular springs were developed by employing anion-coordination-based foldamers as the monomer. The coiling of the foldamer is controlled by oligo(urea) ligands coordinating to chloride ions; subsequently, the folding and unfolding of foldamer conformations endow the polymer network with excellent energy dissipation and toughness. The mechanical performance of the corresponding polymer networks shows a dramatic increase from P-L2UCl (non-folding), to P-L4UCl (a full turn), and then to P-L6UCl (1.5 turns), in terms of strength (2.62 MPa; 14.26 MPa; 22.93 MPa), elongation at break (70 %; 325 %; 352 %), Young's modulus (2.69 MPa; 63.61 MPa; 141.50 MPa), and toughness (1.12 MJ/m3; 21.39 MJ/m3; 49.62 MJ/m3), respectively, which is also better than those without anion centers and the non-foldamer based counterparts. Moreover, P-L6UCl shows enhanced strength and toughness than most of the molecular-spring based polymer networks. Thus, an effective strategy for designing high-performance anion-coordination-based materials is presented.

Co-Assembled Nanoparticles toward Multi-Target Combinational Therapy of Alzheimer's Disease by Making Full Use of Molecular Recognition and Self-Assembly

The complex pathologies in Alzheimer's disease (AD) severely limit the effectiveness of single-target pharmic interventions, thus necessitating multi-pronged therapeutic strategies. While flexibility is essentially demanded in constructing such multi-target systems, for achieving optimal synergies and also accommodating the inherent heterogeneity within AD. Utilizing the dynamic reversibility of supramolecular strategy for conferring sufficient tunability in component substitution and proportion adjustment, amphiphilic calixarenes are poised to be a privileged molecular tool for facilely achieving function integration. Herein, taking β-amyloid (Aβ) fibrillation and oxidative stress as model combination pattern, a supramolecular multifunctional integration is proposed by co-assembling guanidinium-modified calixarene with ascorbyl palmitate and loading dipotassium phytate within calixarene cavity. Serial pivotal events can be simultaneously addressed by this versatile system, including 1) inhibition of Aβ production and aggregation, 2) disintegration of Aβ fibrils, 3) acceleration of Aβ metabolic clearance, and 4) regulation of oxidative stress, which is verified to significantly ameliorate the cognitive impairment of 5×FAD mice, with reduced Aβ plaque content, neuroinflammation, and neuronal apoptosis. Confronted with the extremely intricate clinical realities of AD, the strategy presented here exhibits ample adaptability for necessary alterations on combinations, thereby may immensely expedite the advancement of AD combinational therapy through providing an exceptionally convenient platform.

Host-Guest Chemistry in Binary and Ternary Complexes Utilizing π-Conjugated Carbon Nanorings

The carbon nanorings, possessing a radial π system, have garnered significant attention primarily due to their size-dependent photophysical properties and the presence of a unique curved π-conjugated cavity. This is evidenced by the rapid proliferation of publications. Furthermore, the integration of building blocks into CPP skeletons can confer [n]CPPs with novel and exceptional photophysical and electronic characteristics, as well as chiral properties and host-guest interactions, thereby augmenting the diversity of [n]CPPs. Notably, the curved π surface structures and concave cavity of carbon nanorings enable them to host aromatic or non-aromatic guests with a complementarily curved surface, resulting in interesting binary or ternary complexes. This review provides a comprehensive treatment of literature reports on binary and ternary complexes, focusing on both their host-guest interactions and properties. It is important to note that the scope of this review is limited to host-guest chemistry in binary and ternary complexes based on π-conjugated carbon nanorings.

3D Printable Active Hydrogels with Supramolecular Additive-Driven Adaptiveness

Smart hydrogels are a promising candidate for the development of next-generation soft materials due to their stimuli-responsiveness, deformability, and biocompatibility. However, it remains challenging to enable hydrogels to actively adapt to various environmental conditions like living organisms. In this work, supramolecular additives are introduced to the hydrogel matrix to confer environmental adaptiveness. Specifically, their microstructures, swelling behaviors, mechanical properties, and transparency can adapt to external environmental conditions. Moreover, the presence of hydrogen bonding provides the hydrogel with applicable rheological properties for 3D extrusion printing, thus allowing for the facile preparation of thickness-dependent camouflage and multistimuli responsive complex. The environmentally adaptive hydrogel developed in this study offers new approaches for manipulating supramolecular interactions and broadens the capability of smart hydrogels in information security and multifunctional integrated actuation.

Lanternarene-Based Self-Sorting Double-Network Hydrogels for Flexible Strain Sensors

Conductive flexible hydrogels have attracted immense attentions recently due to their wide applications in wearable sensors. However, the poor mechanical properties of most conductive polymer limit their utilizations. Herein, a double network hydrogel is fabricated via a self-sorting process with cationic polyacrylamide as the first flexible network and the lantern[33]arene-based hydrogen organic framework nanofibers as the second rigid network. This hydrogel is endowed with good conductivity (0.25 S m-1) and mechanical properties, such as large Young's modulus (31.9 MPa), fracture elongation (487%) and toughness (6.97 MJ m-3). The stretchability of this hydrogel is greatly improved after the kirigami cutting, which makes it can be used as flexible strain sensor for monitoring human motions, such as bending of fingers, wrist and elbows. This study not only provides a valuable strategy for the construction of double network hydrogels by lanternarene, but also expands the application of the macrocycle hydrogels to flexible electronics.

Phenyl-Extended Resorcin[4]arenes: Synthesis and Highly Efficient Iodine Adsorption

The continuous exploration of new analogs of calixarenes and pillararenes unlocks infinite opportunities in supramolecular chemistry and materials. In this work, we introduce a new class of macrocycle, phenyl-extended resorcin[4]arenes (ExR4), a unique and innovative design that incorporates unsubstituted phenylene moieties into the resorcin[4]arene scaffold. Single-crystal analysis reveals a chair-like conformation for per-methylated ExR4 (Me-ExR4) and a twisted "Figure-of-eight" shaped conformation for per-hydroxylated ExR4 (OH-ExR4). Notably, OH-ExR4 demonstrates exceptional adsorption capability toward I3 - ions in an aqueous solution, with a rapid kinetic rate of 1.18×10-2 g ⋅ mg-1 ⋅ min-1. Furthermore, OH-ExR4 shows excellent recyclability and potential as a stationary phase in column setups. The discovery of ExR4 opens up new avenues for constructing new macrocycles and inspires further research in functional adsorption materials for water pollutant removal.

Host-Guest Stimuli-Responsive Click Chemistry

Click chemistry has reached its maturity as the weapon of choice for the irreversible ligation of molecular fragments, with over 20 years of research resulting in the development or improvement of highly efficient kinetically controlled conjugation reactions. Nevertheless, traditional click reactions can be disadvantageous not only in terms of efficiency (side products, slow kinetics, air/water tolerance, etc.), but also because they completely avoid the possibility to reversibly produce and control bound/unbound states. Recently, non-covalent click chemistry has appeared as a more efficient alternative, in particular by using host-guest self-assembled systems of high thermodynamic stability and kinetic lability. This review discusses the implementation of molecular switches in the development of such non-covalent ligation processes, resulting in what we have termed stimuli-responsive click chemistry, in which the bound/unbound constitutional states of the system can be favored by external stimulation, in particular using host-guest complexes. As we exemplify with handpicked selected examples, these supramolecular systems are well suited for the development of human-controlled molecular conjugation, by coupling thermodynamically regulated processes with appropriate temporally resolved extrinsic control mechanisms, thus mimicking nature and advancing our efforts to develop a more function-oriented chemical synthesis.

In-situ noncovalent interaction of ammonium ion enabled C-H bond functionalization of polyethylene glycols

The noncovalent interactions of ammonium ion with multidentate oxygen-based host has never been reported as a reacting center in catalytic reactions. In this work, we report a reactivity enhancement process enabled by non-covalent interaction of ammonium ion, achieving the C-H functionalization of polyethylene glycols with acrylates by utilizing photoinduced co-catalysis of iridium and quinuclidine. A broad scope of alkenes can be tolerated without observing significant degradation. Moreover, this cyano-free condition respectively allows the incorporation of bioactive molecules and the PEGylation of dithiothreitol-treated bovine serum albumin, showing great potentials in drug delivery and protein modification. DFT calculations disclose that the formed α-carbon radical adjacent to oxygen-atom is reduced directly by iridium before acrylate addition. And preliminary mechanistic experiments reveal that the noncovalent interaction of PEG chain with the formed quinuclidinium species plays a unique role as a catalytic site by facilitating the proton transfer and ultimately enabling the transformation efficiently.

Single-Molecule Stoichiometry of Supramolecular Complexes

The use of single-molecule microscopy is introduced as a method to quantify the photophysical properties of supramolecular complexes rapidly at ultra low concentrations (<1 nM), previously inaccessible. Using a model supramolecular system based on the host-guest complexation of cucurbit[n]uril (CB[n]) macrocycles together with a fluorescent guest (Ant910Me), we probe fluorescent CB[n] host-guest complexes in the single molecule regime. We show quantification and differentiation of host-guest photophysics and stoichiometries, both in aqueous media and noninvasively in hydrogel, by thresholding detected photons. This methodology has wide reaching implications in aiding the design of next-generation materials with programmed and controlled properties.

Regulation of Fluorescence and Self-assembly of a Salicylaldehyde Azine-Containing Amphiphile by Pillararene

Regulation of fluorescence and self-assembly of a salicylaldehyde azine-containing amphiphile by a water-soluble pillar[5]arene via host-guest recognition in water was realized. The fluorescence and the self-assembled aggregates of the bola-type amphiphile G can be tailored by adding different amounts of water-soluble pillar[5]arene (WP5). In addition, the emission property and self-assembly behavior of G and WP5 are responsive to pH conditions. Furthermore, the fluorescence emission property of G and the regulation by WP5 or pH conditions was applied as information encryption material, rewritable paper, and erasable ink. We believe that this fluorescence regulation strategy is promising for the construction of advanced fluorescent organic materials.

Dynamic Interfaces in Self-Healable Polymers

It is well-established that interfaces play critical roles in biological and synthetic processes. Aside from significant practical applications, the most accessible and measurable quantity is interfacial tension, which represents a measure of the energy required to create or rejoin two surfaces. Owing to the fact that interfacial processes are critical in polymeric materials, this review outlines recent advances in dynamic interfacial processes involving physics and chemistry targeting self-healing. Entropic interfacial energies stored during damage participate in the recovery, and self-healing depends upon copolymer composition and monomer sequence, monomer molar ratios, molecular weight, and polymer dispersity. These properties ultimately impact chain flexibility, shape-memory recovery, and interfacial interactions. Self-healing is a localized process with global implications on mechanical and other properties. Selected examples driven by interfacial flow and shape memory effects are discussed in the context of covalent and supramolecular rebonding targeting self-healable materials development.

Highly robust supramolecular polymer networks crosslinked by a tiny amount of metallacycles

Supramolecular polymeric materials have exhibited attractive features such as self-healing, reversibility, and stimuli-responsiveness. However, on account of the weak bonding nature of most noncovalent interactions, it remains a great challenge to construct supramolecular polymeric materials with high robustness. Moreover, high usage of supramolecular units is usually necessary to promote the formation of robust supramolecular polymeric materials, which restrains their applications. Herein, we describe the construction of highly robust supramolecular polymer networks by using only a tiny amount of metallacycles as the supramolecular crosslinkers. A norbornene ring-opening metathesis copolymer with a 120° dipyridine ligand is prepared and self-assembled with a 60° or 120° Pt(II) acceptor to fabricate the metallacycle-crosslinked polymer networks. With only 0.28 mol% or less pendant dipyridine units to form the metallacycle crosslinkers, the mechanical properties of the polymers are significantly enhanced. The tensile strengths, Young's moduli, and toughness of the reinforced polymers reach up to more than 20 MPa, 600 MPa, and 150 MJ/m3, respectively. Controllable destruction and reconstruction of the metallacycle-crosslinked polymer networks are further demonstrated by the sequential addition of tetrabutylammonium bromide and silver triflate, indicative of good stimuli-responsiveness of the networks. These remarkable performances are attributed to the thermodynamically stable, but dynamic metallacycle-based supramolecular coordination complexes that offer strong linkages with good adaptive characteristics.

Multifold Post-Modification of Macrocycles and Cages by Isocyanate-Induced Azadefluorination Cyclisation

We present the multiple post-modification of organic macrocycles and cages, introducing functional groups into two- and three-dimensional supramolecular scaffolds bearing fluorine substituents, which opens up new possibilities in multi-step supramolecular chemistry employing the vast chemical space of readily available isocyanates. The mechanism and scope of the reaction that proceeds after isocyanate addition to the benzylamine motif via an azadefluorination cyclisation (ADFC) were investigated using DFT calculations, and a series of aromatic isocyanates with different electronic properties were tested. The compounds show excellent chemical stability and were fully characterised. They can be used for subsequent cross-coupling reactions, and ADFC can be used directly to generate cross-linked membranes from macrocycles or cages when using ditopic isocyanates. Single-crystal X-ray (SC-XRD) analysis shows the proof of the formation of the desired supramolecular entity together with the connectivity predicted by calculations and from 19F NMR shifts, allowing the late-stage functionalisation of self-assembled macrocycles and cages by ADFC.

Construction of Supramolecular Polymers and Covalent Polymers via the Same Monomers

Nature owns the ability to construct structurally different polymers from the same monomers. While polymers can be classified as covalent polymers (CPs) and supramolecular polymers (SPs), it is still difficult to synthesize CPs and SPs using same monomers like nature do. Herein, M1 with two diazo salts on both the ends was designed. Additionally, hydroquinone was chosen to be M2 for the existence of two hydroxyl groups. When mixing at room temperature, M1 and M2 self-assembled to SPs via N…H hydrogen bonds. In another way, upon the exposure to ultraviolet irradiation when blending M1 with M2, CPs were fabricated in the presence of covalent bonds. The excellent thermal stability of CPs was determined by TGA and DSC, while the great corrosion resistance of covalent polymers was detected by acid or alkali immersion. In this way, constructing two kinds of polymers using the same monomers was successfully achieved. This shows tremendous potential in fields of polymer science, supramolecular chemistry, which would boom the development of polymers.

Lysophosphatidic acid responsive photosensitive supramolecular organic frameworks for tumor imaging, drug loading, and photodynamic therapy

Supramolecular organic frameworks have been widely applied for biological detection and drug delivery. In this study, a supramolecular organic framework (SOF) is constructed through the self-assembly of a highly photosensitive triarylphosphine oxide guest molecule, OTPP-6-Methyl, with cucurbit [8] uril (CB [8]). The formation of the SOF gradually enhances the weak fluorescence of OTPP-6-Methyl owing to the restriction of the molecular folding motion. Although the high positive charge of OTPP-6-Methyl facilitates binding to various negatively charged substances, the SOF system only demonstrated an obvious fluorescence response to LPA, a biomarker of ovarian cancer, via the disassembly of SOF and subsequent binding of OTPP-6-Methyl with LPA. The fluorescence changes during the entire process are insufficient to allow the sensitive detection of LPA; thus, we further designed a FRET system by introducing Cy5, which can act as an energy receptor to achieve a ratiometric readout for LPA. The tumor-targeting cRGD group was introduced into the SOF system as part of another guest molecule, OTPP-5-M-1-cRGD, to improve the tumor-targeting ability of the SOF system. The SOF system further improves the photosensitivity of guest molecules, and is therefore used in the in vivo imaging of ovarian cancer subcutaneous tumors and as a DDS for loading DOX for the combined in vivo chemotherapy and photodynamic treatment of tumors.

Augmenting Cancer Therapy with a Supramolecular Immunogenic Cell Death Inducer: A Lysosome-Targeted NIR-Light-Activated Ruthenium(II) Metallacycle

Though immunogenic cell death (ICD) has garnered significant attention in the realm of anticancer therapies, effectively stimulating strong immune responses with minimal side effects in deep-seated tumors remains challenging. Herein, we introduce a novel self-assembled near-infrared-light-activated ruthenium(II) metallacycle, Ru1105 (λem = 1105 nm), as a first example of a Ru(II) supramolecular ICD inducer. Ru1105 synergistically potentiates immunomodulatory responses and reduces adverse effects in deep-seated tumors through multiple regulated approaches, including NIR-light excitation, increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, selective targeting of tumor cells, precision organelle localization, and improved tumor penetration/retention capabilities. Specifically, Ru1105 demonstrates excellent depth-activated ROS production (∼1 cm), strong resistance to diffusion, and anti-ROS quenching. Moreover, Ru1105 exhibits promising results in cellular uptake and ROS generation in cancer cells and multicellular tumor spheroids. Importantly, Ru1105 induces more efficient ICD in an ultralow dose (10 μM) compared to the conventional anticancer agent, oxaliplatin (300 μM). In vivo experiments further confirm Ru1105's potency as an ICD inducer, eliciting CD8+ T cell responses and depleting Foxp3+ T cells with minimal adverse effects. Our research lays the foundation for the design of secure and exceptionally potent metal-based ICD agents in immunotherapy.

Dynamic Thermostable Cellulosic Triboelectric Materials from Multilevel-Non-Covalent Interactions

Triboelectric materials present great potential for harvesting huge amounts of dispersed energy, and converting them directly into useful electricity, a process that generates power more sustainably. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have emerged as a technology to power electronics and sensors, and it is expected to solve the problem of energy harvesting and self-powered sensing from extreme environments. In this paper, a high-temperature-resistant triboelectric material is designed based on multilevel non-covalent bonding interactions, which achieves an ultra-high surface charge density of 192 µC m-2 at high temperatures. TENGs based on the triboelectric material exhibit more than an order of magnitude higher power output (2750 mW m-2 at 200 °C) than the existing devices at high temperatures. These remarkable properties are achieved based on enthalpy-driven molecular assembly in highly unbonded states. Thus, the material maintains bond strength and ultra-high surface charge density in entropy-dominated high-temperature environments. This molecular design concept points out a promising direction for the preparation of polymers with excellent triboelectric properties.

Adaptisorption of Nonporous Polymer Crystals

Although our knowledge and understanding of adsorptions in natural and artificial systems has increased dramatically during the past century, adsorption associated with nonporous polymers remains something of a mystery, hampering applications. Here we demonstrate a model system for adaptisorption of nonporous polymers, wherein dative B-N bonds and host-guest binding units act as the kinetic and thermodynamic components, respectively. The coupling of these two components enables nonporous polymer crystals to adsorb molecules from solution and undergo recrystallization as thermodynamically favored crystals. Adaptisorption of nonporous polymer crystals not only extends the types of adsorption in which the sorbate molecules are integrated in a precise and orderly manner in the sorbent systems, but also provides a facile and accurate approach to the construction of polymeric materials with precise architectures and integrated functions.

Ion transport in nanofluidics under external fields

Nanofluidic channels with tailored ion transport dynamics are usually used as channels for ion transport, to enable high-performance ion regulation behaviors. The rational construction of nanofluidics and the introduction of external fields are of vital significance to the advancement and development of these ion transport properties. Focusing on the recent advances of nanofluidics, in this review, various dimensional nanomaterials and their derived homogeneous/heterogeneous nanofluidics are first briefly introduced. Then we discuss the basic principles and properties of ion transport in nanofluidics. As the major part of this review, we focus on recent progress in ion transport in nanofluidics regulated by external physical fields (electric field, light, heat, pressure, etc.) and chemical fields (pH, concentration gradient, chemical reaction, etc.), and reveal the advantages and ion regulation mechanisms of each type. Moreover, the representative applications of these nanofluidic channels in sensing, ionic devices, energy conversion, and other areas are summarized. Finally, the major challenges that need to be addressed in this research field and the future perspective of nanofluidics development and practical applications are briefly illustrated.

One-Pot Fabrication of Supramolecular Synthetic Protein Hydrogel with Tissue-like Integrated Dynamic Features

Protein-incorporated soft networks have received remarkable attention during the past several years. They possess desirable properties similar to native tissues and organs and exhibit unique advantages in applications. However, fabrication of protein-based hydrogels usually suffers from complex protein mutation and modification or chemical synthesis, which limited the scale and yield of production. Meanwhile, the lack of rationally designed noncovalent interactions in networks may result in a deficiency of the dynamic features of materials. Therefore, a highly efficient method is needed to include supramolecular interactions into protein hydrogel to generate a highly dynamic hydrogel possessing integrated tissue-like properties. Here, we report the design and construction of native protein-based supramolecular synthetic protein hydrogels through a simple and efficient one-pot polymerization of acrylamide and ligand monomers in the presence of a ligand-binding protein. The supramolecular interactions in the network yield integrated dynamic properties, including remarkable stretchability over 10,000% of their original length, ultrafast self-healing abilities within 3-4 s, tissue-like fast stress relaxation, satisfactory ability of adhesion to different living and nonliving substrates, injectability, and high biocompatibility. Furthermore, this material demonstrated potential as a biosensor to monitor small finger movements. This strategy provides a new avenue for fabricating synthetic protein hydrogels with integrated features.

Stretchable poly[2]rotaxane elastomers

Mechanically interlocked polymers (MIPs) are promising candidates for the construction of elastomeric materials with desirable mechanical performance on account of their abilities to undergo inherent rotational and translational mechanical movements at the molecular level. However, the investigations on their mechanical properties are lagging far behind their structural fabrication, especially for linear polyrotaxanes in bulk. Herein, we report stretchable poly[2]rotaxane elastomers (PREs) which integrate numerous mechanical bonds in the polymeric backbone to boost macroscopic mechanical properties. Specifically, we have synthesized a hydroxy-functionalized [2]rotaxane that subsequently participates in the condensation polymerization with diisocyanate to form PREs. Benefitting from the peculiar structural and dynamic characteristics of the poly[2]rotaxane, the representative PRE exhibits favorable mechanical performance in terms of stretchability (∼1200%), Young's modulus (24.6 MPa), and toughness (49.5 MJ/m3). Moreover, we present our poly[2]rotaxanes as model systems to understand the relationship between mechanical bonds and macroscopic mechanical properties. It is concluded that the mechanical properties of our PREs are mainly determined by the unique topological architectures which possess a consecutive energy dissipation pathway including the dissociation of host-guest interaction and consequential sliding motion of the wheel along the axle in the [2]rotaxane motif.

Supramolecular Switch for the Regulation of Antibacterial Efficacy of Near-Infrared Photosensitizer

The global antibiotic resistance crisis has drawn attention to the development of treatment methods less prone to inducing drug resistance, such as antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT). However, there is an increasing demand for new photosensitizers capable of efficiently absorbing in the near-infrared (NIR) region, enabling antibacterial treatment in deeper sites. Additionally, advanced strategies need to be developed to avert drug resistance stemming from prolonged exposure. Herein, we have designed a conjugated oligoelectrolyte, namely TTQAd, with a donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) backbone, enabling the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) under NIR light irradiation, and cationic adamantaneammonium groups on the side chains, enabling the host-guest interaction with curcubit[7]uril (CB7). Due to the amphiphilic nature of TTQAd, it could spontaneously form nanoassemblies in aqueous solution. Upon CB7 treatment, the positive charge of the cationic adamantaneammonium group was largely shielded by CB7, leading to a further aggregation of the nanoassemblies and a reduced antibacterial efficacy of TTQAd. Subsequent treatment with competitor guests enables the release of TTQAd and restores its antibacterial effect. The reversible supramolecular switch for regulating the antibacterial effect offers the potential for the controlled release of active photosensitizers, thereby showing promise in preventing the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria.

Fluorescence color change of supramolecular polymer networks controlled by crown ether-cation recognition

We report a fluorescent supramolecular polymer networks (SPNs) system based on crown ether-cation recognition. The polymer side chains bear ammonium cations, which can be recognized by host molecules with a B15C5 unit and a quinoline group at each end. The quinoline group makes the host molecule exhibit blue fluorescence. After the formation of SPNs, the recognition of the crown ether-cation transforms the blue fluorescence into yellow fluorescence. The accompanying fluorescence color change during the formation of SPNs makes it with potential applications in the fields of display, printing, information storage, and bioimaging.

Overcoming barriers with non-covalent interactions: supramolecular recognition of adamantyl cucurbit[n]uril assemblies for medical applications

Adamantane, a staple in medicinal chemistry, recently became a cornerstone of a supramolecular host-guest drug delivery system, ADA/CB[n]. Owing to a good fit between the adamantane cage and the host cavity of the cucurbit[n]uril macrocycle, formed strong inclusion complexes find applications in drug delivery and controlled drug release. Note that the cucurbit[n]uril host is not solely a delivery vehicle of the ADA/CB[n] system but rather influences the bioactivity and bioavailability of drug molecules and can tune drug properties. Namely, as host-guest interactions are capable of changing the intrinsic properties of the guest molecule, inclusion complexes can become more soluble, bioavailable and more resistant to metabolic conditions compared to individual non-complexed molecules. Such synergistic effects have implications for practical bioapplicability of this complex system and provide a new viewpoint to therapy, beyond the traditional single drug molecule approach. By achieving a balance between guest encapsulation and release, the ADA/CB[n] system has also found use beyond just drug delivery, in fields like bioanalytics, sensing assays, bioimaging, etc. Thus, chemosensing in physiological conditions, indicator displacement assays, in vivo diagnostics and hybrid nanostructures are just some recent examples of the ADA/CB[n] applicability, be it for displacements purposes or as cargo vehicles.

Assembly and Utility of a Drawstring-Mimetic Supramolecular Complex

Inspired by the drawstring structure in daily life, here we report the development of a drawstring-mimetic supramolecular complex at the molecular scale. This complex consists of a rigid figure-of-eight macrocyclic host molecule and a flexible linear guest molecule which could interact through three-point non-covalent binding to form a highly selective and efficient host-guest assembly. The complex not only resembles the drawstring structure, but also mimics the properties of a drawstring with regard to deformations under external forces. The supramolecular drawstring can be utilized as an interlocked crosslinker for poly(methyl acrylate), and the corresponding polymer samples exhibit comprehensive enhancement of macroscopic mechanical performance including stiffness, strength, and toughness.

Metallo-Supramolecular Helical Fibres from Chiral Phenylacetylene Monomers: Cation Induced Self-Assembly

Chiral metallo-supramolecular fibres can be easily obtained by mixing a chloroform solution of a phenylacetylene monomer (PA) that bears a chiral sulfoxide group as pendant, with different equivalents of a methanolic solution of AgClO4 . Thus, while the PA is found molecularly dissolved in chloroform, the addition of Ag+ ions induce its aggregation through the formation of an axially chiral metallo-supramolecular aggregate with high thermal stable properties. In this case, the ability of the metal ion to coordinate the PA triple bond, combined with the argentophilicity of the metal ion and the planarity of the phenylacetylene drives to the formation of a helical coordination polymer, whose P or M axial chirality is determined by the chirality of the sulfoxide used as substituent of the PA. Depending on the PA/Ag+ (mol/mol) ratio, it is possible to tune the morphology of the metallo-supramolecular aggregate from chiral fibers to chiral gel.

CB[8]- and triarylboron-based supramolecular organic framework for microRNA detection, tumor-targeted drug delivery, and photodynamic therapy

Supramolecular organic frameworks (SOFs) are widely used for biological detection and drug delivery. In this study, a SOF system was fabricated through the self-assembly of photosensitive triarylboron (TAB), TAB-6-methyl, and CB[8]. The maximum fluorescence emission of TAB-6-methyl was greatly enhanced and red-shifted from 560 nm to 610 nm after SOF formation. The SOF can specifically respond to a microRNA by dissembling and then combining with microRNA, which is accompanied by a fluorescence shift from 610 nm to 560 nm, thus providing a ratiometric readout for microRNA detection. The photosensitivity of TAB-6-methyl can be further improved by forming a SOF, which can be used in photodynamic therapy. By constructing another guest molecule, TAB-5-1-cRGD, we successfully embedded cRGD in the SOF system to improve its tumor-targeting ability. Moreover, we used this SOF system as a fluorescence imaging probe for targeted tumor imaging and as a drug carrier system for loading DOX to achieve combined photodynamic and chemotherapy treatment of tumors.

Olympic gels formed through catenation of dsDNA rings regulated by topoisomerase II: A coarse-grained model

Topological regulation of DNA by topoisomerases in cells is very crucial for life. We propose a coarse-grained model to study the catenation process of double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) rings regulated by topoisomerase II (TOP2) and provide a computational method to characterize the topological structures of the Olympic gels obtained. The function of TOP2 in the catenation of dsDNA rings is implicitly fulfilled by operating the length of a stretchable catch bond in the dsDNA ring. After the catenation reaction of initially noncatenated dsDNA rings in the solution, the Olympic gel is obtained and the interlocked topology of the dsDNA rings can be characterized by a computational method derived from the HOMFLY polynomial, based on which the catenation degree and the complexity of catenation are quantified. Detailed dependence of the catenation degree and the complexity of the catenated topology on key parameters, including the size of the transient broken gap and the duration time of the break on the dsDNA ring during operation by TOP2, the initial molar ratio of TOP2 to the dsDNA rings, and the reaction temperature, has been investigated.

Clamparene: Synthesis, Structure, and Its Application in Spontaneous Formation of 3D Porous Crystals

Macrocyclic arenes have emerged as pivotal scaffolds in supramolecular chemistry. Despite their significant contributions to molecular recognition and diverse applications, challenges persist in the development of macrocyclic arene-based crystalline materials, particularly in achieving porosity and addressing limitations in adsorption efficiency resulting from the small cavity sizes of existing macrocyclic arenes. In this study, we present the design and synthesis of a novel macrocyclic arene, clamparene (CLP), featuring a rigid backbone, easy synthesis, and a sizable cavity. CLP self-assembles into one-dimensional sub-nanotubes that further organize into a three-dimensional porous framework in the solid state. The crystalline solid of CLP exhibits potential as a porous crystalline adsorbent for various benzene-based contaminants with rapid adsorption kinetics, large uptake amounts, and good recyclability.

Constructing a solid-state supramolecular polymer based on host-guest recognition between perethylated pillar[5]arene and tetrathiafulvalene

Herein we present a novel linear supramolecular polymeric structure formed in both the solution and solid state, utilizing the host-guest recognition motif between perethylated pillar[5]arene and tetrathiafulvalene.

Azo-Linked Porous Polycalix[n]arenes for the Efficient Removal of Organic Micropollutants from Water

Developing novel porous adsorbents for efficient wastewater treatment is significant to the environment protection. Herein, three porous polycalix[n]arenes (n = 4, 6, and 8) which had varying cavity sizes of the macrocycle (Azo-CX4P, Azo-CX6P, and Azo-CX8P) were prepared under mild conditions and tested for their potential application in water purification. Azo-CX8P with a larger cavity size of the macrocycle outperformed Azo-CX4P and Azo-CX6P in screening studies involving a range of organic micropollutants. It was proved that Azo-CX8P was especially efficient in the removal of cationic dyes because of its high negative surface charge. In terms of the adsorption of Rhodamine B with Azo-CX8P, the pseudo-second-order rate constant reaches 5.025 g·mg-1·min-1 with the maximum adsorption capacity being 1345 mg·g-1. These values are significantly higher compared with those recorded for most adsorbents. In addition, the easily prepared Azo-CX8P can be reused at least six times without a loss of the adsorption efficiency, demonstrating its potential use in water purification.

Cucurbituril-based supramolecular host-guest complexes: single-crystal structures and dual-state fluorescence enhancement

Two supramolecular complexes were prepared using cucurbiturils [CBs] as mediators and a four-armed p-xylene derivative (M1) as a guest molecule. The single crystals of these two complexes were obtained and successfully analyzed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD). An unexpected and intriguing 1 : 2 self-assembly arrangement between M1 and CB[8] was notably uncovered, marking its first observation. These host-guest complexes exhibit distinctive photophysical properties, especially emission behaviors. Invaluable insights can be derived from these single-crystal structures. The precious single-crystal structures provide both precise structural information regarding the supramolecular complexes and a deeper understanding of the intricate mechanisms governing their photophysical properties.
