Long-Term Investigation of the Temporal Trends and Gas/Particle Partitioning of Short- and Medium-Chain Chlorinated Paraffins in Ambient Air of King George Island, Antarctica

Human dermal exposure to short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins: Effect of populations, activities, gender, and haze pollution

Human dermal exposure to chlorinated paraffins (CPs) has not been well documented. Therefore, hand wipes were collected from four occupational populations to analyze short-chain CPs (SCCPs) and medium-chain CPs (MCCPs) in order to estimate dermal uptake and oral ingestion via hand-to-mouth contact. The total CP levels (∑SCCPs and ∑MCCPs) in wipes ranged from 71.4 to 2310 µg/m2 in security guards, 37.6 to 333 µg/m2 in taxi drivers, 20.8 to 559 µg/m2 in office workers, and 20.9 to 932 µg/m2 in undergraduates, respectively. Security guards exhibited the highest levels of ∑SCCPs among four populations (p < 0.01). In undergraduates engaged in outdoor activities, C13 emerged as the most dominant SCCPs homologue group, followed by C12, C11, and C10. The levels of ∑SCCPs and ∑MCCPs in males in light haze pollution were significantly higher than that in heavy haze pollution (p < 0.05). The median estimated dermal absorption dose of SCCPs and MCCPs via hand was 22.2 and 104 ng (kg of bw)-1 day-1, respectively, approximately 1.5 times the oral ingestion [12.3 and 74.4 ng (kg of bw)-1 day-1], suggesting that hand contact is a significant exposure source to humans.

Distribution patterns and origins of organophosphate esters in soils from different climate systems on the Tibetan Plateau

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are extensively applied in various materials as flame retardants and plasticizers, and have high biological toxicity. OPEs are detected worldwide, even in distant polar regions and the Tibetan Plateau (TP). However, few studies have been performed to evaluate the distribution patterns and origins of OPEs in different climate systems on the TP. This study investigated the distribution characteristics, possible sources, and ecological risks of OPEs in soils from the different climate systems on the TP and its surroundings. The total concentrations of OPEs in soil varied from 468 to 17,451 pg g-1 dry weight, with greater concentrations in southeast Tibet (monsoon zone), followed by Qinghai (transition zone) and, finally, southern Xingjiang (westerly zone). OPE composition profiles also differed among the three areas with tri-n-butyl phosphate dominant in the westerly zone and tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate dominant in the Indian monsoon zone. Correlations between different compounds and altitude, soil organic carbon, or longitude varied in different climate zones, indicating that OPE distribution originates from both long-range atmospheric transport and local emissions. Ecological risk assessment showed that tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate and tri-phenyl phosphate exhibited medium risks in soil at several sites in southeast Tibet. Considering the sensitivity and vulnerability of TP ecosystems to anthropogenic pollutants, the ecological risks potentially caused by OPEs in this region should be further assessed.

Modeling Global Environmental Fate and Quantifying Global Source-Receptor Relationships of Short-, Medium-, and Long-Chain Chlorinated Paraffins

Decades-long emissions and long-range transport of chlorinated paraffins (CPs) have resulted in their pervasive presence in the global environment. The lack of an understanding of the global distribution of short-, medium-, and long-chain CPs (SCCPs, MCCPs, and LCCPs) hinders us from quantitatively tracing their origins in remote regions. Using the BETR-Global model and historical emission estimates, we simulate the global dispersion of CPs from 1930 to 2020. Whereas contamination trends in the main contaminated regions (East Asia, Europe, North America, and South Asia) diverge, CP concentrations in the Arctic, Antarctica, and the Tibetan Plateau all increase. By 2020, East Asian, European, and North American emissions contributed 38%, 26%, and 18% of CP contamination in the High Arctic, respectively, while Southern hemispheric emissions and emissions around the Tibetan Plateau primarily contribute to CP contamination in central Antarctica and on the Plateau, respectively. Our results emphasize the important contribution of (i) European and North American emissions to historical CP contamination in remote regions and current MCCP and LCCP contamination in the High Arctic and (ii) East Asian emission to current SCCP and MCCP contamination of all three remote regions. These results can help to evaluate the effectiveness of potential global and regional CP emission-reduction strategies.

First comprehensive assessment of dietary chlorinated paraffins intake and exposure risk for the rural population of the Tibetan Plateau, China

Knowledge regarding the occurrence of short-chain and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs and MCCPs) in foodstuffs and their dietary exposure risks for rural Tibetan residents remains largely unknown. Herein, we collected main foodstuffs (including highland barley, vegetables, Tibetan butter, mutton, and yak beef) across the rural Tibetan Plateau and characterized the CP profiles and concentrations. The highest SCCPs concentrations were detected in Tibetan butter (geometric mean (GM): 240.6 ng/g wet weight (ww)), followed by vegetables (59.4 ng/g ww), mutton (51.4 ng/g ww), highland barley (46.3 ng/g ww), and yak beef (31.7 ng/g ww). For MCCPs, the highest concentrations were also detected in Tibetan butter (319.5 ng/g ww), followed by mutton (181.9 ng/g ww), vegetables (127.0 ng/g ww), yak beef (71.2 ng/g ww), and highland barley (30.3 ng/g ww). The predominant congener profiles of SCCPs were C13Cl7-8 in mutton and yak beef, C10Cl7-8 in Tibetan butter, and C10-11Cl6-7 in highland barley and vegetables. The predominant congener profiles of MCCPs were C14Cl7-9 in all sample types. Combined with our previous results of free-range chicken eggs, the median estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of SCCPs and MCCPs via diet for Tibetan rural adults and children was estimated to be 728.8 and 1853.9 ng/kg bw/day and 2565.6 and 5952.8 ng/kg bw/day, respectively. In the worst scenario, MCCPs might induce potential health risks for rural Tibetan population. To our knowledge, this is the first systematic dietary exposure research of SCCPs and MCCPs in the remote rural areas.

Characterization and health risks of short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins in the gas and size-fractionated particulate phases in ambient air

Short-chain and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs and MCCPs) have garnered significant attention because they have persistence and potential toxicity, and can undergo long-distance transport. Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) inhaled in the size-fractionated particulate phase and gas phase can carry different risks to human health due to their ability to accumulate in different regions of the respiratory tract and exhibit varying deposition efficiencies. In our study, large-volume ambient air samples in both the size-fractionated particulate phase (Dp < 1.0 μm, 1.0-2.5 μm, 2.5-10 μm, and Dp ≥ 10 μm) and gas phase were collected simultaneously in Beijing using an active sampler. The overall levels of SCCPs and MCCPs were relatively high, the ranges being 57-881 and 30-385 ng/m3, respectively. SCCPs tended to be partitioned in the gas phase (on average 75% of the ΣSCCP concentration), while MCCPs tended to be partitioned in the particulate phase (on average 62% of the ΣMCCP concentration). Significant correlations were discovered between the logarithm-transformed gas-particle partition coefficients (KP) and predicted subcooled vapor pressures (PL0) (p < 0.01 for SCCPs and MCCPs) and between the logarithm-transformed KP values and octanol-air partition coefficients (KOA) (p < 0.01 for SCCPs and MCCPs). Thus, the slopes indicated that organic matter absorption was the dominant process involved in gas-particle partitioning. We used the ICRP model to calculate deposition concentrations for particulate-associated CPs in head airways region (15.6-71.4 ng/m³), tracheobronchial region (0.8-4.8 ng/m³), and alveolar region (5.1-21.9 ng/m³), then combined these concentrations with the CP concentrations in the gas phase to calculate estimated daily intakes (EDIs) for inhalation. The EDIs for SCCPs and MCCPs through inhalation of ambient air for the all-ages group were 67.5-184.2 ng/kg/day and 19.7-53.7 ng/kg/day, respectively. The results indicated that SCCPs and MCCPs in ambient air do not currently pose strong risks to human health in the study area.

Bee colonies map the short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffin contamination from the apiary environment

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are industrial chemicals that have potential adverse effects in the environment and on human health. This study investigated CPs in apiary environment, honeybees, and bee products from two rural areas of Beijing, China. The median concentrations of short-chain CPs (SCCPs) and medium-chain CPs (MCCPs) were 22 and 1.6 ng/m3 in the ambient air, 1350 and 708 ng/g dry mass (dw) in bees, 1050 and 427 ng/g dw in flowers, 37 and 54 ng/g in honey, 78 and 53 ng/g dw in bee pollen, 36 and 30 ng/g dw in soil, and 293 and 319 ng/g dw in bee wax. C10Cl6-7 and C14Cl7-8 dominated SCCPs and MCCPs in these samples, respectively. The concentrations and distributions of CPs in samples from apiaries located in the two regions varied. Long-range transportation of air masses was identified as an important source of CPs in apiaries. A close relationship between CPs in bees and the apiary environment indicated that bees could act as bioindicators for CP contamination in the environment. A human health risk assessment found that there were low risks for adults and children exposed to CPs through consumption of honey and pollen from the studied regions.

Dechloranes and chlorinated paraffins in sediments and biota of two subarctic lakes

Our understanding of the environmental behavior, bioaccumulation and concentrations of chlorinated paraffins (CPs) and Dechloranes (Dec) in the Arctic environment is still limited, particularly in freshwater ecosystems. In this descriptive study, short chain (SCCPs) and medium chain (MCCPs) CPs, Dechlorane Plus (DP) and analogues, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were measured in sediments, benthic organisms, three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) and brown trout (Salmo trutta) in two Sub-Arctic lakes in Northern Norway. Takvannet (TA) is a remote lake, with no known local sources for organic contaminants, while Storvannet (ST) is situated in a populated area. SCCPs and MCCPs were detected in all sediment samples from ST with concentration of 42.26-115.29 ng/g dw and 66.18-136.69 ng/g dw for SCCPs and MCCPs, respectively. Only SCCPs were detected in TA sediments (0.4-5.28 ng/g dw). In biota samples, sticklebacks and benthic organisms showed the highest concentrations of CPs, while concentrations were low or below detection limits in both char and trout. The congener group patterns observed in both lakes showed SCCP profiles dominated by higher chlorinated congener groups while the MCCPs showed consistency in their profiles, with C14 being the most prevalent carbon chain length. Anti- and syn-DP isomers were detected in all sediment, benthic and stickleback samples with higher concentrations in ST than in TA. However, they were only present in a few char and trout samples from ST. Dec 601 and 604 were below detection limits in all samples in both lakes. Dec 603 was detected only in ST sediments, sticklebacks and 2 trout samples, while Dec 602 was the only DP analogue found in all samples from both lakes. While there were clear differences in sediment concentrations of DP and Dec 602 between ST and TA, differences between lakes decreased with increasing δ15N. This pattern was similar to the PCB behavior, suggesting the lake characteristics in ST are playing an important role in the lack of biomagnification of pollutants in this lake. Our results suggest that ST receives pollutants from local sources in addition to atmospheric transport.

Positive association between chlorinated paraffins and the risk of allergic diseases in children and adolescents

Contaminants may induce immune response polarization, leading to immune diseases, such as allergic diseases. Evidence concerning the effects of chlorinated paraffins (CPs), an emerging persistent organic pollutant, on immune system is scarce, particularly for epidemiological evidence. This study explores the association between CPs exposure and allergic diseases (allergic rhinitis, atopic eczema, and allergic conjunctivitis) in children and adolescents in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) in China. Herein, 131,304 children and adolescents from primary and secondary schools in the PRD were included and completed the questionnaire survey. The particulate matter (PM) samples were collected in the PRD and the PM2.5-bound CP concentrations were analyzed. In the multivarious adjustment mixed effect model (MEM), an IQR increase in ∑CPs was significantly associated with allergic diseases (rhinitis, eczema, and conjunctivitis) with the estimated odds ratios (ORs) for 1.11 (95% CI: 1.10, 1.13), 1.17 (95% CI: 1.15, 1.19), and 1.82 (95% CI: 1.76, 1.88), respectively. Interaction analysis indicated that overweight and obese individuals might have greater risk. Similar effect estimates were observed in several sensitivity analyses. This study provided epidemiological evidence on the immunotoxicity of CPs. More studies to confirm our findings and investigate mechanisms are needed.

Soil's Hidden Power: The Stable Soil Organic Carbon Pool Controls the Burden of Persistent Organic Pollutants in Background Soils

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) tend to accumulate in cold regions by cold condensation and global distillation. Soil organic matter is the main storage compartment for POPs in terrestrial ecosystems due to deposition and repeated air-surface exchange processes. Here, physicochemical properties and environmental factors were investigated for their role in influencing POPs accumulation in soils of the Tibetan Plateau and Antarctic and Arctic regions. The results showed that the soil burden of most POPs was closely coupled to stable mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC). Combining the proportion of MAOC and physicochemical properties can explain much of the soil distribution characteristics of the POPs. The background levels of POPs were estimated in conjunction with the global soil database. It led to the proposition that the stable soil carbon pools are key controlling factors affecting the ultimate global distribution of POPs, so that the dynamic cycling of soil carbon acts to counteract the cold-trapping effects. In the future, soil carbon pool composition should be fully considered in a multimedia environmental model of POPs, and the risk of secondary release of POPs in soils under conditions such as climate change can be further assessed with soil organic carbon models.

Remarkable Contamination of Short- and Medium-Chain Chlorinated Paraffins in Free-Range Chicken Eggs from Rural Tibetan Plateau

Rapid social-economic development introduces modern lifestyles into rural areas, not only bringing numerous modern products but also new pollutants, such as chlorinated paraffins (CPs). The rural Tibetan Plateau has limited industrial activities and is a unique place to investigate this issue. Herein we collected 90 free-range chicken egg pool samples across the rural Tibetan Plateau to evaluate the pollution status of CPs. Meanwhile, CPs in related soils, free-range chicken eggs from Jiangxi, and farmed eggs from markets were also analyzed. The median concentrations of SCCPs (159 ng g-1 wet weight (ww)) and MCCPs (1390 ng g-1 ww) in Tibetan free-range chicken eggs were comparable to those from Jiangxi (259 and 938 ng g-1 ww) and significantly higher than those in farmed eggs (22.0 and 81.7 ng g-1 ww). In the rural Tibetan Plateau, the median EDI of CPs via egg consumption by adults and children were estimated to be 81.6 and 220.2 ng kg-1 bw day-1 for SCCPs and 483.4 and 1291 ng kg-1 bw day-1 for MCCPs, respectively. MCCPs might pose potential health risks for both adults and children in the worst scenario. Our study demonstrates that new pollutants should not be ignored and need further attention in remote rural areas.

Are We Justified in Modeling Human Exposure to Chlorinated Paraffin Mixtures Using the Average Properties of Congeners and Homologues?

Concern over human exposure to chlorinated paraffin (CP) mixtures keeps increasing. The absence of a comprehensive understanding of how human exposure varies with the physicochemical properties of CP constituents has hindered the ability to determine at what level of aggregation exposure to CPs should be assessed. We answer this question by comparing exposure predicted with either a "complex" method that utilizes isomer-specific properties or "simplified" methods that rely on median properties of congener, homologue, or short-/medium-/long-chain CP groups. Our results demonstrate the wide range of physicochemical properties across CP mixtures and their dependence on molecular structures. Assuming unit emissions in the environment, these variances translate into an extensive disparity in whole-body concentrations predicted for different isomers, spanning ∼11 orders of magnitude. CPs with 13-19 carbons and 6-10 chlorines exhibit the highest human exposure potential, primarily owing to moderate to high hydrophobicity and slow environmental degradation and biotransformation. Far-field exposure is dominant for most CP constituents. Our study underscores that using average properties of congener, homologue, or S/M/LCCP groups yields results that are consistent with those derived from isomer-based modeling, thus offering an efficient and practical framework for future risk assessments and human exposure studies of CPs and other complex chemical mixtures.

Short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins in sediment from the Haihe River Basin: Sources, distributions, and ecological risk assessment

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) can accumulate in sediment and pose risks to ecological systems and human health. The Haihe River Basin is one of the seven main river basins in China and is mainly in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, which is densely populated and very urbanized. There is therefore a high probability of CP pollution in the Haihe River Basin. However, CP pollution and the environmental risks posed by CPs in the Haihe River are not well understood. In this study, the concentrations of short-chain CPs (SCCPs) and medium-chain CPs (MCCPs) in sediment from six rivers in the Haihe River Basin system were determined using two-dimensional gas chromatography electron-capture negative ionization mass spectrometry. The total SCCP and MCCP concentrations in the sediment samples ranged from 131.83 to 1767.71 and from 89.72 to 1442.82 ng/g dry weight, respectively. The total organic carbon content did not significantly correlate with the CP concentrations. The dominant SCCP congener groups were C10Cl6-7 and the dominant MCCP congener groups were C14Cl7-8. Significant relationships (R = 0.700, p < 0.05) were found between the SCCP and MCCP concentrations, indicating that SCCPs and MCCPs may have similar sources. Hierarchical cluster analysis and principal component analysis indicated that sediment in the study area was contaminated with CPs through the use of the CP-42 and CP-52 commercial products in industrial processes and human activities. The ecological risks posed by CPs were assessed and SCCPs were found to pose high risks in the Yongding New River but moderate risks in the other rivers. MCCPs were found to pose minimal risks to the aquatic environment at most of the sampling points.

Calibration and Application of PUF Disk Passive Air Samplers To Assess Chlorinated Paraffins in Ambient Air in Australia, China, and Vietnam

Ambient air samples were collected in Brisbane (Australia), Dalian (China), and Hanoi (Vietnam) during Mar 2013-Feb 2018 using polyurethane foam based passive air samplers. A sampling rate calibration experiment was conducted for chlorinated paraffins (CPs, i.e., short-chain, medium-chain, and long-chain CPs), where the sampling rates were 4.5 ± 0.7, 4.8 ± 0.3, and 4.8 ± 2.1 m3 day-1 for SCCPs, MCCPs, and LCCPs, respectively. The atmospheric concentration of CPs was then calculated and the medians of ∑CPs were 0.079, 1.0, and 0.89 ng m-3 in Brisbane, Dalian, and Hanoi, respectively. The concentration of CPs in Brisbane's air remained at low levels, with no significant differences observed between the city background site and the city center site, indicating limited usage and production of CPs in this city. The highest concentration of MCCPs was detected in Dalian, while the highest concentration of SCCPs was detected in Hanoi. A decrease of SCCP concentration and an increase of MCCPs' were found in Brisbane's air from 2016 to 2018, while increasing trends for both SCCPs and MCCPs were observed in Dalian. These results indicated impacts from different sources of CPs in the investigated cities.

Novel biomonitoring method for determining five classes of legacy and alternative flame retardants in human serum samples

Flame retardants (FRs) are ubiquitous in environment and biota and may pose harm to human health. In recent years, concern regarding legacy and alternative FRs has been intensified due to their widespread production and increasing contamination in environmental and human matrices. In this study, we developed and validated a novel analytical method for simultaneous determination of legacy and alternative FRs, including polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs), short- and middle-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs and MCCPs), novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), and organophosphate esters (OPEs) in human serum. Serum samples were prepared by liquid-liquid extraction using ethyl acetate, and purified with Oasis® HLB cartridge and Florisil-silica gel columns. Instrumental analyses were carried out using gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry, high-resolution gas chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry, and gas chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry, respectively. The proposed method was validated for linearity, sensitivity, precision, accuracy, and matrix effects. Method detection limits for NBFRs, OPEs, PCNs, SCCPs, and MCCPs were 4.6 × 10^-4-8.6 × 10^-2, 4.3 × 10^-3-1.3, 1.1 × 10^-5-1.0 × 10^-4, 1.5, and 9.0 × 10^-1 ng/mL, respectively. Matrix spike recoveries ranged from 73%-122%, 71%-124%, 75%-129%, 92%-126%, and 94%-126% for NBFRs, OPEs, PCNs, SCCPs, and MCCPs, respectively. The analytical method was applied for detection of real human serum. CPs were the dominant FRs in serum, indicating CPs were widely presented in human serum and should be pay more attention for their health risk.

Chlorinated Paraffin Pollution in the Marine Environment

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are ubiquitous in the environment due to their large-scale usage, persistence, and long-range atmospheric transport. The oceans are a critical environment where CPs transformation occurs. However, the broad impacts of CPs on the marine environment remain unclear. This review describes the sources, occurrence and transport pathways, environmental processes, and ecological effects of CPs in the marine environment. CPs are distributed in the global marine environment by riverine input, ocean currents, and long-range atmospheric transport from industrial areas. Environmental processes, such as the deposition of particle-bound compounds, leaching of plastics, and microbial degradation of CPs, are the critical drivers for regulating CPs' fate in water columns or sediment. Bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of CPs in marine food webs may threaten marine ecosystem functions. To elucidate the biogeochemical processes and environmental impacts of CPs in marine environments, future work should clarify the burden and transformation process of CPs and reveal their ecological effects. The results would help readers clarify the current research status and future research directions of CPs in the marine environment and provide the scientific basis and theoretical foundations for the government to assess marine ecological risks of CPs and to make policies for pollution prevention and control.

Release Behavior of Liquid Crystal Monomers from Waste Smartphone Screens: Occurrence, Distribution, and Mechanistic Modeling

Liquid crystal display (LCD) screens can release many organic pollutants into the indoor environment, including liquid crystal monomers (LCMs), which have been proposed as a novel class of emerging pollutants. Knowing the release pathways and mechanisms of LCMs from various components of LCD screens is important to accurately assess the LCM release and reveal their environmental transport behavior and fate in the ambient environment. A total of 47, 43, and 33 out of 64 target LCMs were detected in three disassembled parts of waste smartphone screens, including the LCM layer (LL), light guide plate (LGP), and screen protector (SP), respectively. Correlation analysis confirmed LL was the source of LCMs detected in LGP and SP. The emission factors of LCMs from waste screen, SP, and LGP parts were estimated as 2.38 × 10^-3, 1.36 × 10^-3, and 1.02 × 10^-3, respectively. A mechanism model was developed to describe the release behaviors of LCMs from waste screens, where three characteristics parameters of released LCMs, including average mass proportion (AP), predicted subcooled vapor pressures (P_L), and octanol-air partitioning coefficients (K_oa), involving coexistence of absorption and adsorption mechanisms, could control the diffusion-partitioning. The released LCMs in LGP could reach diffusion-partition equilibrium more quickly than those in SP, indicating that LCM release could be mainly governed through SP diffusions.

Characterization of short-, medium- and long-chain chlorinated paraffins in ambient PM2.5 from the Pearl River Delta, China

Research on the environmental occurrence of long-chain chlorinated paraffins (LCCPs) in ambient fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) is still scarce. In the present study, short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs), medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) and LCCPs were simultaneously quantified and profiled in PM_2.5 samples collected from 96 primary or secondary schools in the Pearl River Delta of South China. SCCPs, MCCPs and LCCPs were detected in higher than 90% samples with concentrations in the range of 0.832-109, 1.02-110, and 0.173-17.4 ng/m³, respectively. The dominant congener groups of SCCPs, MCCPs and LCCPs were C₁₃Cl_6-8, C₁₄Cl_7-8, and C₁₈Cl_7-9, respectively. The concentrations of SCCPs and MCCPs were higher in summer than in winter, while an opposite seasonal trend was observed for LCCPs. Principal components analysis showed there were seasonal variations in the congener group patterns with C₁₃Cl_6-7 and C₁₄Cl₇ more abundant in summer than in winter_. Concentrations of CPs also exhibited slight spatial variations. Exposure risk assessment based on different age groups suggested exposure to PM_2.5-associated CPs would not pose significant health risk. The present study expands the existing knowledge of CPs contamination in atmospheric environment.

Levels and diverse composition profiles of chlorinated paraffins in indoor dust: possible sources and potential human health related concerns

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs), a group of mixtures with different carbon chain lengths and chlorine contents, are widely used as plasticizers and flame retardants in various indoor materials. CPs could be released from CP-containing materials into the ambient environment and then enter the human body via inhalation, dust ingestion and dermal absorption, resulting in potential effects on human health. In this study, we collected residential indoor dust in Wuhan, the largest city in central China, and focused on the co-occurrence and composition profiles of CPs as well as the resultant human risk via dust ingestion and dermal absorption. The results indicated that CPs with C_9-40 were ubiquity in indoor dust with medium-chain CPs (MCCPs, C_14-17) as the main components (6.70-495 μg g^-1), followed by short-chain CPs (SCCPs, C_10-13) (4.23-304 μg g^-1) and long-chain (LCCPs, C_≥18) CPs (3.68-331 μg g^-1). Low levels (not detected-0.469 μg g^-1) of very short-chain CPs (vSCCPs, C₉) were also found in partial indoor dust. The dominant homolog groups were C₉ and Cl_6-7 groups for vSCCPs, C₁₃ and Cl_6-8 groups for SCCPs, C₁₄ and Cl_6-8 groups for MCCPs, and C₁₈ and Cl_8-9 groups for LCCPs. Based on the measured concentrations, vSCCPs, SCCPs, MCCPs, and LCCPs posed limited human health risks to local residents via dust ingestion and dermal absorption.

Gas/particle partitioning of short and medium chain chlorinated paraffins from a CP production plant using passive air sampler and occupational exposure assessment

Short and medium chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs and MCCPs) attract increasing attentions due to their persistence, long-range transport capacity. Their gas/particle partitioning from the production emission source, the effects to the ambient environment and exposure for employees are worth revealing. Polyurethane foam based passive air samplers (PUF-PAS) was deployed to determine the environmental levels of SCCPs (63.4-719.7 ng/m³) and MCCPs (151.6-1009.2 ng/m³) in the gas-phase and particle-phase both in the outdoor air in a CP production plant and the indoor air in the workshops. Extremely high SCCPs were found in the chlorination workshop and outdoor samples nearby, attributing to the release during the production. In the workshops, dramatically higher SCCP concentrations were determined than outdoors. SCCPs and MCCPs predominated in the gas-phase with a proportion >80 %. C₁₀-CPs and C₁₄-CPs were dominated with a proportion higher than 20 % and 50 %, respectively. Significant correlations between log K_p' and log P_L⁰ and log K_OA were observed in the outdoor air in a CP production plant and the indoor air in the workshops, respectively. A multivariate mechanism based on adsorption by organic matters and influenced by absorption processes might determine the gas/particle partitioning of CPs in the production source area. Two scenarios of occupational exposure i.e. working in the workshops and working outdoors were considered. Higher occupational exposure via inhalation to MCCPs was found for employees than SCCPs in the workshops, which was estimated to be 137.1 ng/kg/day at a worst case. No obvious adverse effects were observed for occupational employees in this CP production plant.

Chlorinated paraffins: A review of sample preparation, instrumental analysis, and occurrence and distribution in food samples

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are released into natural environment during processes of production and utilization with diet being the most important exposure route of CPs for human beings. Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) have lower molecular weights, higher vapor pressures, and higher water solubilities than medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) and long-chain chlorinated paraffins (LCCPs), making SCCPs more likely to be readily released into the environment. Thus, SCCPs were enlisted as persistent organic pollutants being included in the Stockholm Convention in 2017. This review article summarized sample preparation and instrumental analysis methods of CPs for food types such as oil, meat, and aquatic foods. In addition, reported concentrations and profiles, dietary intake and risk assessment of CPs in food samples from various regions, such as China, Japan, and Germany are discussed for studies published between 2005 and 2022. This review is timely given the lack of a recent literature summary of the concentration and distribution of CPs in food. All these studies warranted the necessity to maintain continuous monitoring of CPs concentrations and their potential health risks given the concentrations of CPs in food are increasing worldwide.

Evaluating the dynamic distribution process and potential exposure risk of chlorinated paraffins in indoor environments of Beijing, China

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are typical semi-volatile chemicals (SVOCs) that have been used in copious quantities in indoor material additives. SVOCs distribute dynamically between the gas phase and various condensate phases, especially organic films. Investigating the dynamic behaviors of existing CPs in indoor environments is necessary for understanding their potential risk to humans from indoor exposure. We investigate the distribution profiles of CPs in both gas phase and organic films in indoor environments of residential buildings in Beijing, China. The concentrations of CPs were in the range of 32.21-1447 ng/m³ in indoor air and in the range of 42.30-431.1 μg/m² and in organic films. Cooking frequency was identified as a key factor that affected the distribution profiles of CPs. Furthermore, a film/gas partitioning model was constructed to explore the transportation and fate of CPs. Interestingly, a re-emission phenomenon from organic films was observed for chemical groups with lower log K_oa components, and, importantly, their residue levels in indoor air were well predicted. The estimated exposure risk of CPs in indoor environment was obtained. For the first time, these results produced convincing evidence that the co-exposure risk of short-chain CPs (SCCPs), medium-chain CPs (MCCPs), and long-chain CPs (LCCPs) in indoor air could be further increased by film/gas distribution properties, which is relevant for performing risk assessments of exposure to these SVOCs in indoor environments.

The impact of three related emission industries on regional atmospheric chlorinated paraffins pollution

Identifying the contributions of various chlorinated paraffins (CPs) sources in the environment plays an important practical role in the prevention and control of the CPs contamination. However, little is known about how main CP-related emission industries affect the regional atmospheric characteristics of CPs, including CP products industry, metal working industry, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) industry. In this study, 60 passive air samples were collected from five typical cities in Henan Province, China, which had serious CP pollution and different structures of CP-related emission industry. Short chain CPs (SCCPs) and medium chain CPs (MCCPs) were detected in all samples in concentrations ranging of 2.6-7.7 × 10² and 2.1-4.3 × 10² ng m^-3, respectively, which were higher than those in most reports. Moreover, Luoyang (LY) is different from other cities, showing a relatively severe MCCP contaminations. The CP pollution characteristics between different cities are obviously affected by the proportion of local CP-related industries. According to the results of cluster heatmaps, the local CP-related emission industrial structure had a greater impact on MCCPs pollution than SCCPs. Additionally, the contribution of metal working industry was beyond that of PVC production industry and CP products industry.

Short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins in polyvinyl chloride consumer goods available in the Japanese market

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs), including short-chain CPs (SCCPs) and medium-chain CPs (MCCPs), are hazardous chemical additives widely applied as plasticizers and flame retardants in polymers, mainly in polyvinyl chloride (PVC). In 2017, SCCPs were listed under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). MCCPs were proposed for listing as POPs in 2021. SCCPs are also restricted under the Basel Convention, with two tentative low POP content (LPC) limits (100 and 10,000 mg kg^-1) for SCCPs in waste. As a signatory Party of both conventions, Japan must ensure their implementation and manage SCCP wastes in environmentally sound ways. Therefore, we aimed to assess the occurrence of SCCPs and MCCPs in PVC consumer goods (n = 87) available in the Japanese market. CPs were detected in 48% of the samples. Regarding positive samples, children's products and toys (1.3-120,000 mg kg^-1) were more impacted by SCCPs whereas electrical and electronic cables (1.2-59,000 mg kg^-1) and house interior products (3.5-550 mg kg^-1) were more impacted by MCCPs. Fourteen and four samples exceeded the LPC limit of 100 and 10,000 mg kg^-1 for SCCPs, respectively. Most products were impacted by CP contents (<1 % w/w) considerably below those reported as intentional CP uses in PVC. However, 11 samples with total CP contents ranging from 1.3% to 15 % (w/w) might have been impacted by intentional CP use as secondary plasticizer in PVC. Most of the impacted consumer goods available in the Japanese market were manufactured overseas, highlighting that only restricting POPs nationally is not enough for thorough implementation of the Basel and Stockholm Conventions. Therefore, imported PVC consumer goods, PVC waste and PVC recycling streams need to be monitored as relevant potential sources of SCCPs worldwide, even where the national industry strictly follows the restriction of such chemicals.

Medium- and long-chain chlorinated paraffins in air: A review of levels, physicochemical properties, and analytical considerations

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are synthetic chemicals that are produced at high volumes and have a global presence. CPs are generally divided into three groups based on their carbon chain lengths: short-chain CPs (SCCPs, C_10-13), medium-chain CPs (MCCPs, C_14-17), and long-chain CPs (LCCPs, C_≥18). SCCPs have been formally recognized as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and have been listed under the Stockholm Convention on POPs. Concerns about increases in MCCP and LCCP production as replacements for SCCP products are rising, given their similar properties to SCCPs and the fact that they remain relatively understudied with only a few reported measurements in air. Passive air samplers with polyurethane foam disks (PUF-PAS), which have been successfully applied to SCCPs, provide an opportunity to expand the existing body of data on MCCP and LCCP air concentrations, as they are inexpensive and require little maintenance. The uptake of MCCPs and LCCPs by PUF disk samplers is characterized in this paper based on newly derived PUF-air partitioning coefficients using COSMOtherm. The ability of PUF disk samplers to capture both gas-phase and particle fractions is important because MCCPs and LCCPs have reduced volatility compared to SCCPs and therefore are mainly associated with particulate matter in air. In addition, due to their use as additives in plastics and rubber products, they are associated with micro- and nanoplastics, which are considered to be potential vectors for the long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT) of these chemicals. The review has highlighted other limitations to reporting of MCCPs and LCCPs in air, including the lack of suitable analytical standards and the requirement for advanced analytical methods to detect and resolve these complex mixtures. Overall, this review indicates that further research is needed in many areas for medium- and long-chain chlorinated paraffins in order to better understand their occurrence, transport and fate in air.

Evidence of stockpile contamination for legacy polychlorinated biphenyls and organochlorine pesticides in the urban environment of Cyprus (Eastern Mediterranean): Influence of meteorology on air level variability and gas/particle partitioning based on equilibrium and steady-state models

The present study investigated comprehensively the atmospheric occurrence and fate of an extensive range of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs; forty-two congeners), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs; twenty-seven emerging and legacy agrochemicals) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs; fifty parent and alkylated members, including the non USEPA-16 listed toxic ones), in both gas and particulate phase of the scarcely monitored atmosphere over Cyprus for the first time. Parent-metabolite concentration ratios suggested fresh application for dichlorodiphenyl-trichloroethanes (DDTs), dicofol, hexachlorocyclohexanes, endosulfan and chlorothalonil, particularly during spring (April-May). Regressions of logarithms of partial pressure against ambient temperature revealed that secondary recycling from contaminated terrestrial surfaces regulates the atmospheric level variability of PCBs, DDTs, aldrin, chlordane, dicofol, heptachlor and endosulfan. Enthalpies of surface-air exchange (∆H_SA) calculated from Clausius-Clapeyron equations were significantly correlated to vaporization enthalpies (∆H_V) determined by chromatographic techniques, corroborating presence of potential stockpile-contaminated sites around the study area. The Harner-Bidleman equilibrium model simulating urban areas, and the Li-Jia empirical model, predicted better the partitioning behavior of PAHs (<four-ring parent and alkylated members), PCBs (<hexa-chlorobiphenyls), and OCPs, respectively. For heavier PAHs and PCBs, partitioning coefficients (K_P) were inadequately predicted by the Li-Ma-Yang steady-state model, probably due to local human activities and regional transport in the study area.

Land-Ocean Exchange Mechanism of Chlorinated Paraffins and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons with Diverse Sources in a Coastal Zone Boundary Area, North China: The Role of Regional Atmospheric Transmission

The marine environment is regarded as a crucial "sink" of numerous land-origin pollutants. As typical boundary regions, the coastal and offshore areas are used to evaluate the dominating transfer process and land-ocean exchange mechanism of semivolatile organic compounds. In air samples collected from a coastal area in North China over a whole year, chlorinated paraffins (CPs), including short-chain CPs and medium-chain CPs, and prior control 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined, with mean concentrations of 25.8 and 94.7 ng/m³, respectively. Results of different gas-particle partitioning models indicated that the steady-state hypothesis provides a better description of the possible land-ocean exchange molecular mechanism. The source-sink influences for CPs and PAHs were affected by the predominant atmospheric motion, which alternated between gaseous diffusion and particulate sedimentation in different seasons. Source apportionment results indicated that different transfer characteristics contributed to the source divergence of ambient CPs and PAHs within 12 nautical miles in the same area. Coal/biomass combustion and diesel/natural gas combustion were the main PAH sources in the coast site (43.1%) and sea site (35.3%), respectively. Similar industrial sources CP-52 and CP-42 were the main CP sources in the coast site (41.4%) and sea site (40.8%), respectively.

Gas-particle partitioning of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from oil combustion involving condensate, diesel and heavy oil

This study focuses on the gas-particle (G-P) partitioning of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from oil combustion, which is one of the important contributors of anthropogenic PAHs but has been rarely studied. The combustions of different types of oils involving ultra-light to heavy oils were investigated, and the PAH partitioning mechanism was determined by the widely used Junge-Pankow adsorption model, K_oa absorption model, and dual sorption model, respectively. The results show that the source-specific diagnostic ratios of Ant/(Ant+Phe) are between 0.09 and 0.24, the estimated regression slopes of G-P partition coefficients (K_P) of the total PAHs on their sub-cooled liquid vapor pressures (P_L^O) are in the range of - 0.34 to - 0.25, and the predicted fractions of PAHs in the particle phase (φ) by K_oa absorption model are close to the measured values, while the log K_Pvalues of the LMW PAHs from the combustions of diesel and heavy oil are better represented by the dual sorption model. Our findings indicate that PAHs are derived from mixed sources that include the unburned original oil and combustion products, and the PAH partitioning mechanism is governed by the process of absorption into organic matter because of the unburned oil, but both adsorption and absorption exist simultaneously in the lighter PAHs from the combustions of heavier oils (i.e., diesel and heavy oil). Based on these findings, the understanding of the fate and transport of PAH emissions and the optimization of the emergency responses to accidents such as marine oil spills would be potentially improved.

Legacy and emerging organic contaminants in the polar regions

The presence of numerous emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) and remobilization of legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in polar regions have become significant concerns of the scientific communities, public groups and stakeholders. This work reviews the occurrences of EOCs and POPs and their long-range environmental transport (LRET) processes via atmosphere and ocean currents from continental sources to polar regions. Concentrations of classic POPs have been systematically monitored in air at several Arctic stations and showed seasonal variations and declining trends. These chemicals were also the major POPs reported in the Antarctica, while their concentrations were lower than those in the Arctic, illustrating the combination of remoteness and lack of potential local sources for the Antarctica. EOCs were investigated in air, water, snow, ice and organisms in the Arctic. Data in the Antarctica are rare. Reemission of legacy POPs and EOCs accumulated in glaciers, sea ice and snow may alter the concentrations and amplify their effects in polar regions. Thus, future research will need to understand the various biogeochemical and geophysical processes under climate change and anthropogenic pressures.

Biotic and Abiotic Transformation Pathways of a Short-Chain Chlorinated Paraffin Congener, 1,2,5,6,9,10-C10H16Cl6, in a Rice Seedling Hydroponic Exposure System

In this work, a typical congener of short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) with six chlorine atoms (CP-4, 1,2,5,6,9,10-C₁₀H₁₆Cl₆, 250 ng/mL) was selected to elaborate the comprehensive environmental transformation of SCCPs in rice seedling exposure system. CP-4 was quickly absorbed, translocated, and phytovolatilized by seedlings with a small quality of CP-4 (5.81-36.5 ng) being detected in the gas phase. Only 21.4 ± 1.6% of an initial amount (10,000 ng) of CP-4 remained in the exposure system at the end of exposure. Among the transformed CP-4, some were attributed to the degradation of the rhizosphere microorganism (9.1 ± 5.8%), root exudates (2.2 ± 4.2%), and abiotic transformation (3.0 ± 2.8%) that were proved by several transformation products found in the root exudate exposure groups and unplanted controls, and a majority was phytotransformed by rice seedlings. Here, 61 products were determined through complex transformation pathways, including multihydroxylation, -HCl elimination, dechlorination, acetylation, sulfation, glycosylation, and amide acid conjugation. The acetylated and amide acid conjugates of CPs were first observed. Phase I and Phase II phytometabolic reactions of CPs were found intertwining. These findings demonstrate that multiactive transformation reactions contribute to the overlook of CPs accumulated in plants and are helpful for the environmental and health risk assessments of SCCPs in agricultural plants.

Global Historical Production, Use, In-Use Stocks, and Emissions of Short-, Medium-, and Long-Chain Chlorinated Paraffins

The last few decades have seen ubiquitous and increasing contamination of chlorinated paraffins (CPs) worldwide. Here, we develop the first global inventories of production, use, in-use stocks, and emissions of total CPs, including the short-, medium- and long-chain components (SCCPs, MCCPs, and LCCPs) during 1930-2020 using a dynamic substance flow analysis model named Chemical in Products Comprehensive Anthroposhpheric Fate Estimation. The model estimates that a total of ∼33 million metric tons of CPs have been produced and used globally, ∼40% of which still resided in in-use products by 2020 and is available for long-term emissions in the next decades. Global cumulative emissions of CPs have increased to ∼5.2 million metric tons by 2020, with SCCPs, MCCPs, and LCCPs accounting for ∼30, 40, and 30%, respectively. While the production, use, and emissions of CPs started declining in regions such as Western Europe, they remain high in China. The model also suggests that homologues with 10, 14, and 22-23 carbons were predominant in the cumulatively produced and emitted SCCPs, MCCPs, and LCCPs, respectively. The emission estimates were evaluated by generating environmental concentrations that are comparable to literature-reported environmental monitoring data. Our estimates provide opportunities to link the environmental fate and occurrence of CPs to emission sources and lay the basis for future risk-reduction strategies of CPs around the world.

Steady-State Based Model of Airborne Particle/Gas and Settled Dust/Gas Partitioning for Semivolatile Organic Compounds in the Indoor Environment

Indoor semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs), present in the air, airborne particles, settled dust, and other indoor surfaces, can enter the human body through several pathways. Knowing the partitioning between gaseous and particulate phases is important in identifying specific pathway contributions and thereby accurately assessing human exposure. Numerous studies have developed equilibrium equations to predict airborne particle/gas (P/G) partitioning in air (K_P) and dust/gas (D/G) partitioning in settled dust (K_D). The assumption that P/G and D/G equilibria are instantaneous for airborne and settled dust phases, commonly adopted by current indoor fate models, is not likely valid for compounds with high octanol-air partition coefficients (K_OA). Here, we develop steady-state based equations to predict K_P and K_D in the indoor environment. Results show that these equations perform well and are verified by worldwide monitoring data. It is suggested that instantaneous steady state could work for P/G and D/G partitioning of SVOCs in indoor environments, and the equilibrium is just a special case of the steady state when log K_OA < 11.38 for P/G partitioning and log K_OA < 10.38 for D/G partitioning. These newly developed equations and methods provide a tool for more accurate assessment for human exposure to SVOCs in the indoor environment.

Prediction of the gas/particle partitioning quotient of PAHs based on ambient temperature

Gas/particle (G/P) partitioning is an important influencing factor for the environmental fate of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs). The G/P partitioning of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is an integrated complex process due to its formation and growth concurrently with particles. Based on the large dataset of gaseous and particulate samples in a wide ambient temperature range of 50 °C, the simple empirical equations based on ambient temperature were established to predict the G/P partitioning quotient (K_P) of PAHs at the temperature range from 252 K to 307 K (-21 °C to 34 °C). The performance of the empirical equations was validated by comparison with the monitoring K_P of PAHs worldwide. The empirical equations exhibited good performance for the prediction of K_P of PAHs based on ambient temperature. Two deviations with the prediction lines of the previous G/P partitioning models from the monitoring data of K_P were observed. It was found that the deviations might be attributed to some non-considered influencing factors with the previous G/P partitioning prediction models. Therefore, further research should be conducted to study the mechanism of the G/P partitioning of PAHs, and more influencing factors should be introduced into the establishment of G/P partitioning models of PAHs. In summary, the result of the present study provided a convenient method for the prediction of K_P of PAHs, which should be useful for the study of environmental fate of PAHs in atmosphere.

Release and Gas-Particle Partitioning Behavior of Liquid Crystal Monomers during the Dismantling of Waste Liquid Crystal Display Panels in E-Waste Recycling Facilities

Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) are a class of emerging chemical pollutants; however, their release and gas-particle partitioning remain unknown. This study performed the first comprehensive analysis of a wide range of 93 LCMs in the ambient air of liquid crystal display (LCD) dismantling facilities. A total of 53 of the 93 target LCMs were detected in the air samples. The total atmospheric concentrations (gas and particles) of LCMs (∑LCMs) ranged from 68,800 to 385,000 (median of 204,000) pg/m³. Most LCMs were predominant in the gas phase, implying that their atmospheric transport would be mainly governed by gas rather than particle diffusions. Differential distribution patterns of the LCMs were observed due to their different atmospheric partitioning behaviors. Significant linear correlations were found between the gas-particle partitioning coefficients (K_P) and the predicted subcooled vapor pressures (P_L) and octanol-air partitioning coefficients (K_oa) (p < 0.01). Compared with two equilibrium-state models, the experimentally observed particulate fractions (ϕ) fit better with the predicted values based on the Li-Ma-Yang (L-M-Y) steady-state model, and K_oa was identified as a key factor determining the atmospheric fate pathways of LCMs. Our study highlights another new class of chemicals significantly contributing to the chemical mixture in the ambient air at e-waste recycling areas.

Inventory approach for short-chain chlorinated paraffins for the Stockholm Convention implementation in Brazil

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are chemicals with multipurpose applications. Their global production has increased despite their adverse impacts on the environment and human health. In 2017, short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) were listed as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the Stockholm Convention. Yet, specific exemptions were granted for their applications despite the recycling prohibition for products containing SCCPs. Therefore, we aimed to produce the first Brazilian inventory of SCCPs following its respective guidance to evaluate the applicability of the SCCP inventory guidance and to provide technical insights regarding SCCPs in the update of the Brazilian National Implementation Plan (NIP). Moreover, we performed a review of SCCP occurrence in Brazil to fulfil data gaps in the inventory development. We identified and consulted nationwide stakeholders and assessed foreign trade data of CPs and products that might contain CPs in relevant amounts. The Brazilian production of CPs was discontinued in 1994. However, CPs are still imported and used in the country. CPs have been mostly applied as plasticizers, flame retardants and lubricants in Brazil. The import of products containing CPs also pose a significant route of CP entrance into Brazil. Thus, the current end-of-life management of CP-containing products is a bottleneck towards the Convention implementation. The guidance application was feasible and useful despite the low engagement of stakeholders. To assess foreign trade of CPs and CP-containing products, we recommend the use of more specific tracking codes. Besides, the review of SCCP occurrence is not a demanded part for an inventory but was a useful complementation.

Particle/gas partitioning for semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in Level III multimedia fugacity models: Gaseous emissions

Atmospheric transport is a global-scale process that moves semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) rapidly from source regions to remote locations, where these chemicals have never been produced or used. Particle/gas (P/G) partitioning of SVOCs during atmospheric transport governs wet and dry deposition, and thereby controls the efficiency and scope of long-range atmospheric transport and fate for these sorts of compounds. Previous work has shown that the assumption of steady state between particulate and gaseous phases in the atmosphere leads to model results that more closely match observations especially for compounds that strongly favor the particulate phase. Here, the practical application of steady-state P/G partitioning in the atmosphere in multimedia fugacity models is presented in greater detail. A method is developed whereby the fugacity of a chemical in the particle-phase is set equal to that in the gaseous phase (a pseudo equilibrium) but still maintains steady state of the chemical between air and aerosols in the atmosphere. This procedure greatly simplifies the application of multimedia fugacity models. Using this approach, a condition of steady state between air and aerosols is developed and applied in a Level III six-compartment six-fugacity model, which becomes a much simpler Level III six-compartment four-fugacity model. This newly-developed model is then applied to data observed during a monitoring program.

Particle/gas partitioning for semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in level III multimedia fugacity models: Both gaseous and particulate emissions

Multimedia fugacity models have long been used to address the fate of toxic organic chemical emissions by providing a quantitative account of the sources, transport processes, and sinks. Recently, we have examined three level-III fugacity models (E4F (equilibrium six-compartment four-fugacity), S6F (steady-state six-compartment six-fugacity) and S4F (steady-state six-compartment four-fugacity) Models), in the context of their performance set against real-world data, and their practicality of application. Here, we discuss how the balance between gaseous and aerosol phases of emissions assumed for initial conditions affects the different model outcomes. Our results show that the S6F Model predictions closely match those of the S4F Model when chemical emissions are entirely in the gas-phase. As the particulate proportion of the emission increases, the S6F Model predictions diverge from those of the S4F Model and approach those of the E4F Model. Once the particulate portion reaches 100%, the S6F and E4F Models produce identical results: an internally inconsistent system where chemicals are not in a steady state between air and aerosols, and mass balance for both air and aerosols is not achieved. Thus, in terms of practicality, internal consistency, chemical mass balance and agreement with observations, the S4F Model is clearly the best choice.

Direct measurements and modeling of congener group specific vapor pressure for chlorinated paraffins

Chlorinated Paraffins (CPs) are a complex group of manmade chemicals detected widely in the environment. To predict their environmental fate and effects, it is important to understand their physical-chemical properties including vapor pressure. In this study, the first direct measurements of the vapor pressure for CP congener groups (C_10-16Cl_4-11) are presented. Vapor pressure was measured above three industrial CP mixtures with different congener distributions between 20 and 50 °C using a gas saturation method. The measured saturated vapor pressure (P^∗) decreased with increasing carbon chain length and Cl content. ΔH_vap ranged between 73 and 122 kJ mol^-1, consistent with data from the literature and model prediction. The experimental log P^∗ at 25 °C agreed well with predictions from an empirical regression model in the literature (R² = 0.97; RSME = 0.25) and with those predicted from the COSMO-RS-trained fragment contribution model (R² = 0.95; RSME = 0.35). A new empirical model was calibrated with the P^∗ data for 35 congener groups measured in this study. Predicted log P^∗ values correlate well with field-measured gas/particle partition coefficients and may therefore be used for estimating the environmental fate and pathways of a broad range of CPs in the environment.
