Degradation of Ofloxacin by Perylene Diimide Supramolecular Nanofiber Sunlight-Driven Photocatalysis

Surface coordination induced a quasi p-n junction for efficient visible light driven degradation of tetracycline over hydroxyapatite

The removal of antibiotics from aquatic solutions remains a global environmental challenge. In this work, the photocatalytic removal of a typical antibiotic-tetracycline (TC) using hydroxyapatite (HAp) as a catalyst was investigated. It was impressive that TC could be efficiently degraded by HAp under visible light irradiation, even though both HAp and TC exhibited poor harvesting in visible light region. The experimental and theoretical explorations were undertaken to thoroughly investigate the underlying mechanism of visible light degradation of TC over HAp. The results indicated that the formed TC-HAp complexes via surface coordination played an important role as photosensitizers for the visible light response. Together with the formation of a quasi p-n junction via band alignment, the photogenerated electrons in the highest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of TC-HAp were excited to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and subsequently migrated to the conduction band of HAp to achieve the efficient charge separation. Superoxide radicals and holes were found to be the major active species for TC degradation. The toxicity evaluation showed that TC could be transferred to the lower toxic intermediates, and deep oxidation with prolonged reaction time was necessary to eliminate the toxicity of TC. This work demonstrates the surface coordination with subsequent quasi p-n junction mechanism of TC degradation over HAp under visible light, which will stimulate us to explore new efficient photocatalytic systems for the degradation of various contaminants.

Constructing Heptazine-COF@TiO2 Heterojunction Photocatalysts for Efficient Photodegradation of Acetaminophen under Visible Light

Constructing heterojunction photocatalysts are widely applied to boost the photocatalytic activity of materials. Here, a novel covalent organic framework (COF) material with heptazine units was developed and hybridized with TiO2 nano particles (NPs) to fabricate the Heptazine-COF@TiO2 photocatalysts for acetaminophen (AAP) photodegradation. The successfully assembled heptazine unit endows the Heptazine-COF with outstanding semiconductor property (optical bandgap is 2.53 eV). The synthesized Heptazine-COF@TiO2 hybrids is proved to have the heterojunction structure with high visible light activity and fast charge-carrier mobility, and exhibits better performance in photodegradation of AAP under visible light. The excellent photodegradation efficiency (rate constant: 0.758 min-1) and high reusability (rate constant: 0.452 min-1 in the 6th cycles) of the optimized sample outperform the traditional inorganic photocatalysts and other heterojunction photocatalysts. In addition, these photocatalysts present universal degradation activity for other dyes and antibiotics.

Self-assembled π-conjugated chromophores: preparation of one- and two-dimensional nanostructures and their use in photocatalysis

Photocatalytic systems have attracted research interest as a clean approach to generate energy from abundant sunlight. In this context, developing efficient and robust photocatalytic structures is crucial. Recently, self-assembled organic chromophores have entered the stage as alternatives to both molecular systems and (in)organic semiconductors. Nanostructures made of self-assembled π-conjugated dyes offer, on the one hand, molecular customizability to tune their optoelectronic properties and activities and on the other hand, provide benefits from heterogeneous catalysis that include ease of separation, recyclability and improved photophysical properties. In this contribution, we present recent achievements in constructing supramolecular photocatalytic systems made of chromophores for applications in water splitting, H2O2 evolution, CO2 reduction, or environmental remediation. We discuss strategies that can be used to prepare ordered photocatalytic systems with an emphasis on the effect of packing between the dyes and the resulting photocatalytic activity. We further showcase supramolecular strategies that allow interfacing the organic nanostructures with co-catalysts, molecules, polymers, and (in)organic materials. The principles discussed here are the foundation for the utilization of these self-assembled materials in photocatalysis.

Novel Ag3PO4/ZnWO4-modified graphite felt electrode for photoelectrocatalytic removal of harmful algae: Performance and mechanism

A novel Ag3PO4/ZnWO4-modified graphite felt electrode (AZW@GF) was prepared by drop coating method and applied to photoelectrocatalytic removal of harmful algae. Results showed that approximately 99.21% of chlorophyll a and 91.57% of Microcystin-LR (MCLR) were degraded by the AZW@GF-Pt photoelectrocatalytic system under the optimal operating conditions with a rate constant of 0.02617 min-1 and 0.01416 min-1, respectively. The calculated synergistic coefficient of photoelectrocatalytic algal removal and MC-LR degradation by the AZW@GF-Pt system was both larger than 1.9. In addition, the experiments of quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) revealed that the photoelectrocatalytic reaction mainly generated •OH and •O2- for algal removal and MC-LR degradation. Furthermore, the potential pathway for photoelectrocatalytic degradation of MC-LR was proposed. Finally, the photoelectrocatalytic cycle algae removal experiments were carried out on AZW@GF electrode, which was found to maintain the algae removal efficiency at about 91% after three cycles of use, indicating that the photoelectrocatalysis of AZW@GF electrode is an effective emergency algae removal technology.

Immobilization of Perylenetetracarboxylic Dianhydride on Al2O3 for Efficiently Photocatalytic Sulfide Oxidation

Perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) derivatives have received significant attention as molecule photocatalysts. However, the poor recyclability of molecule-type photocatalysts hinders their widespread applications. Herein, immobilization of PTCDA on Al2O3 was achieved by simply physical mixing, which not only dramatically improved their recyclability, but also surprisingly improved the reactivity. A mechanism study suggested that the photo-exited state (PTCDA*) of PTCDA could promote the oxidation of thioanisole to generate PTCDA•-, which sequentially reduces oxygen to furnish superoxide radicals to achieve the catalytic cycle. Herein, the immobilization support Al2O3 was able to facilitate the strong adsorption of thioanisole, thereby boosting the photocatalytic activity. This work provides a new insight that the immobilization of organic molecular photocatalysts on those supports with proper adsorption sites could furnish highly efficient, stable, and recyclable molecular-based heterogeneous photocatalysts.

Basic magnesium sulfate@TiO2 composite for efficient adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of 4-dodecylmorpholine in brine

More than 70% of the potash fertilizer globally is produced by the froth flotation process, in which 4-dodecylmorpholine (DMP) serves as a reverse flotation agent. As the potash fertilizer production rapidly rises, the increased DMP levels in discharged brine pose a threat to the production of high-value chemicals. In this paper, composite particles of basic magnesium sulfate@TiO2 (BMS@TiO2) were prepared using a simple and mild loading method. These particles were utilized for the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of DMP in brine. Compared with normal powdered materials, the granular BMS@TiO2 in this study can be easily separated from liquid, and the degradation intermediates will not enter the brine without causing secondary pollution. BMS@TiO2 consists of 5·1·7 phase (5Mg(OH)2·MgSO4·7H2O) whisker clusters embedding 2.3% TiO2. The adsorption equilibrium of DMP on BMS@TiO2 particles was achieved through hydrogen bonding and pore interception with the adsorption capacity of approximately 5 mg g-1 after 6 h. The photodegradation efficiency of DMP adsorbed on BMS@TiO2 reached about 92% within 16 h, which is compared with that of pure TiO2 nanoparticles. Additionally, excellent stability and recyclability of BMS@TiO2 were also observed in five cycle tests of adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of DMP, and the possible photocatalytic degradation pathways and mechanism of DMP are proposed following molecular electrostatic potential analysis. This work provides a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach for eliminating organic micropollutants from water environments.

Molecular Stacking Dependent Molecular Oxygen Activation in Supramolecular Polymeric Photocatalysts

Here, we showed that supramolecular assemblies based on perylene diimides (PDIs) are able to activate molecular oxygen through both the electron transfer and energy transfer pathways, which consequently leads to the formation of superoxide radicals (·O2-) and singlet oxygen species (1O2), respectively. These reactive oxygen species (ROS) can effectively lead to oxidative coupling of benzylamine and oxidation of 2-chloroethyl sulfide (CEES). We have designed and synthesized PDIs with similar molecular structures yet differing by the molecular stacking modes. We found that the photooxidation activities of the PDI supramolecular assemblies are inversely associated with the photoluminescence wavelength difference between the assemblies and the monomers (Δλ) quantitatively, and a smaller Δλ results in a higher catalytic efficiency accordingly. Overall, this work contributes to the design and fabrication of high performance photocatalysts based on metal-free organic materials.

Self-assembled B-doped flower-like graphitic carbon nitride with high specific surface area for enhanced photocatalytic performance

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a promising nonmetallic photocatalyst. In this manuscript, B-doped 3D flower-like g-C3N4 mesoporous nanospheres (BMNS) were successfully prepared by self-assembly method. The doping of B element promotes the internal growth of hollow flower-like g-C3N4 without changing the surface roughness structure, resulting in a porous floc structure, which enhances the light absorption and light reflection ability, thereby improving the light utilization rate. In addition, B element provides lower band gap, which stimulates the carrier movement and increases the activity of photogenerated carriers. The photocatalytic mechanism and process of BMNS were investigated in depth by structural characterization and performance testing. BMNS-10 % shows good degradation for four different pollutants, among which the degradation effect on Rhodamine B (RhB) reaches 97 % in 30 min. The apparent rate constant of RhB degradation by BMNS-10 % is 0.125 min-1, which is 46 times faster compared to bulk g-C3N4 (BCN). And the photocatalyst also exhibits excellent H2O2 production rate under visible light. Under λ > 420 nm, the H2O2 yield of BMNS-10 % (779.9 μM) in 1 h is 15.9 times higher than that of BCN (48.98 μM). Finally, the photocatalytic mechanism is proposed from the results of free radical trapping experiments.

A direct electrochemical sensor based on covalent organic frameworks/platinum nanoparticles for the detection of ofloxacin in water

A direct electrochemical sensor based on covalent organic frameworks (COFs)/platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) composite was fabricated for the detection of ofloxacin (OFX) in water. Firstly, the COF material was synthesized via the condensation reaction of 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene (TAPB) with terephthalaldehyde (TPA) and integrated with PtNPs by in situ reduction. Then, TAPB-TPA-COFs/PtNPs composite was loaded onto the surface of the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by drip coating to construct the working electrode (TAPB-TPA-COFs/PtNPs/GCE). The electrochemical performance of TAPB-TPA-COFs/PtNPs/GCE showed a significant improvement compared with that of TAPB-TPA-COFs/GCE, leading to a 3.2-fold increase in the electrochemical signal for 0.01 mM OFX. Under optimal conditions, the TAPB-TPA-COFs/PtNPs/GCE exhibited a wide linear range of 9.901 × 10-3-1.406 µM and 2.024-15.19 µM with a detection limit of 2.184 × 10-3 µM. The TAPB-TPA-COFs/PtNPs/GCE-based electrochemical sensor with excellent performance provides great potential for the rapid and trace detection of residual OFX.

Degradation of sulfonamide antibiotic via UV/MgO2 system: kinetic, application, and mechanism

In response to antibiotic residues in the water, a novel advanced oxidation technology based on MgO2 was used to remediate sulfamethazine (SMTZ) pollution in aquatic environments. Upon appropriate regulation, the remarkable removal efficiency of SMTZ was observed in a UV/MgO2 system, and the pseudo-first-order reaction constant reached 0.4074 min-1. In addition, the better performance of the UV/MgO2 system in a weak acid environment was discovered. During the removal of SMTZ, the pathways of SMTZ degradation were deduced, including nitration, ring opening, and group loss. In the mineralization exploration, the further removal of residual products of SMTZ by the UV/MgO2 system was visually demonstrated. The qualitative and quantitative researches as well as the roles of reactive species were valuated, which revealed the important role of ·O2-. Common co-existing substances in actual wastewater such as NO3- HA, Cl-, Fe2+, Co2+, and Mn2+ can slightly inhibit the degradation of SMTZ in the UV/MgO2 system. Finally, the capacity of efficient degradation of SMTZ in actual wastewater by the UV/MgO2 system was proved. The results indicated that the innovative UV/MgO2 system was of great practical application prospect in antibiotic residue wastewater remediation.

Removal of pharmaceutical contaminants from hospital wastewater using constructed wetlands: a review

AbstractPharmaceutical compounds are a significant source of environmental pollution, particularly in hospital wastewater, which contains high concentrations of such compounds. Constructed wetlands have emerged as a promising approach to removing pharmaceutical compounds from wastewater. This paper aims to review the current state of knowledge on the removal of pharmaceutical compounds from hospital wastewater using constructed wetlands, including the mechanism of removal, removal efficiency, and future prospects. Pharmaceutical contaminants have been considered to be one of the most emerging pollutants in recent years. In this review article, various studies on constructed wetlands are incorporated in order to remove the pharmaceutical contaminants. The nature of constructed wetland can be explained by understanding the types of constructed wetland, characteristics of hospital wastewater, removal mechanism, and removal efficiency. The results of the review indicate that constructed wetlands are effective in removing pharmaceutical compounds from hospital wastewater. The removal mechanism of these compounds involves a combination of physical, chemical, and biological processes, including adsorption, degradation, and uptake by wetland plants. The removal efficiency of constructed wetlands varies depending on several factors, including the type and concentration of pharmaceutical compounds, the design of the wetland system, and the environmental conditions. Further research is necessary to optimize the performance of these systems, particularly in the removal of emerging contaminants, to ensure their effectiveness and long-term sustainability.

Cobalt(II) mediated calcium sulfite activation for efficient oxidative decontamination in waters: Performance, kinetics and mechanism

To overcome the drawback that excess SO32- from soluble Na2SO3 captures the generated reactive intermediates in sulfite (S(IV))-based advanced oxidation processes (AOP), CaSO3 of the ability to slowly release SO32- is selected as an alternative S(IV) source to establish an enduring S(IV)-based AOP with Co(II). Herein, the Co(II)/CaSO3 process triggers a much better ofloxacin (OFL) degradation than the Co(II)/Na2SO3 process (degradation rate constant: 12.1 > 3.18 mM-1 min-1). The mechanism investigation corroborates that the Co(II) mediated CaSO3 activation follows a Fenton-like process (complexation followed by intramolecular electron transfer). Apart from the conventional sulfate radical (SO4•-), Co(IV) species and singlet oxygen (1O2) are also certifiably involved in Co(II)/CaSO3 process, and their role and formation mechanisms are elucidated comprehensively. Further, the proposed Co(II)/CaSO3 process exhibits an excellent tolerance to complex water matrices (e.g., background ions and humic acid), suggesting its practical application potential for various contaminants abatement in actual wastewater.

A novel 3-dimensional graphene-based cobalt-manganese bimetallic layered double hydroxide:Formation mechanism and performance in photo-assisted permonosulfate-activated degradation of sulfamethoxazole in aqueous solution

Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is a common antibiotic used mainly for bacterial treatment. In this study, a novel three-dimensional cobalt-manganese bimetallic layered double hydroxide graphene hydrogel (CoMn-LDHs/rGO) has been prepared for photo-assisted permonosulfate (PMS)-activated degradation of SMX in water. Compared with the CoMn-LDHs/rGO + PMS and CoMn-LDHs/rGO + Vis systems, the degradation effect of CoMn-LDHs/rGO + PMS + Vis system is the best, and the degradation effect of CoMn-LDHs/rGO system could reach more than 98% under the optimal conditions. After 10 cycles, the catalytic degradation performance of CoMn-LDHs/rGO system remained good, while effectively preventing the leaching of metal ions. Based on the synergistic effect of photocatalysis and PMS oxidation, electron spin resonance spectroscopy and quenching experiments showed that three active substances (•OH, •SO4- and O2•-) were involved in the degradation of SMX. Density functional theory and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) results further proposed the SMX degradation transformation calculation. As expected, the study of the reaction mechanism of 3D CoMn-LDHs/rGO assisted PMS activation under visible light provides an efficient and rapid method for the sustainable degradation of pollutants in water system.

Strategy for improvement of molecular oxygen activation capacity of PPECu by chlorine doping for water decontamination

The activation of molecular oxygen and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) play important roles in the efficient removal of contaminants from aqueous ecosystems. Herein, using a simple and rapid solvothermal process, we developed a chlorine-doped phenylethynylcopper (Cl/PPECu) photocatalyst and applied it to visible light degradation of sulfamethazine (SMT) in aqueous media. The Cl/PPECu was optimized to have a 2.52 times higher steady-state concentration of O2•- (3.62 × 10-5 M) and a 28.87 times higher degradation rate constant (0.2252 min-1) for SMT compared to pure PPECu. Further, the effectiveness of Cl/PPECu in treating sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) in real water systems was verified through an investigation involving natural water bodies, SAs, and ambient sunlight. The energy band structure, DFT calculation and correlation heat map indicated that the addition of chlorine modulated the local electronic structure of PPECu, leading to an improvement in the electron-hole separation, enhanced the O2 activation, and promoted the generation of ROSs. This study not only puts forward innovative ideas for the eco-compatible remediation of environmental pollution using PPECu, but also sheds new light on the activation of oxygen through elemental doping.

Target-prepared sludge biochar-derived synergistic Mn and N/O induces high-performance periodate activation for reactive iodine radicals generation towards ofloxacin degradation

Converting waste activated sludge into catalysts for the removal of antibiotics in water fulfils the dual purpose of waste-to-resource and hazardous pollution elimination. In this study, sludge-derived biochar (SDB) for efficient periodate (PI) activation was first prepared via one-step pyrolysis of potassium permanganate-polyhexamethylenebiguanide conditioned sludge without additional modification. The SDB (750 °C)-PI system degraded 100% ofloxacin (OFL, 41.5 μM) within 6 min and was almost undisturbed by inorganic ions or humic acids. The experimental results confirmed that the predominant role of reactive iodine species (RIS) and the auxiliary involvement of singlet oxygen (1O2) jointly contributed to the OFL degradation. Theoretical calculations further indicated that the synergy between Mn and N/O induced local charge redistribution and improved electron transfer capability of SDB, leading to the formation of electron-rich Mn sites and enhanced Mn(II)↔Mn(III)↔Mn(IV) redox to promote PI activation. More importantly, the enhanced adsorption and charge transfer of PI on the Mn site of the Mn-N/O-C structures induced the I-O bond stretching and the rapid generation of RIS. This study offered a cost-effective strategy for developing SDB-based catalysts, further advancing the comprehension of sludge management and the intricate mechanisms underlying RIS formation in PI-advanced oxidation processes.

Recent Development of Polymer Nanofibers in the Field of Optical Sensing

In recent years, owing to the continuous development of polymer nanofiber manufacturing technology, various nanofibers with different structural characteristics have emerged, allowing their application in the field of sensing to continually expand. Integrating polymer nanofibers with optical sensors takes advantage of the high sensitivity, fast response, and strong immunity to electromagnetic interference of optical sensors, enabling widespread use in biomedical science, environmental monitoring, food safety, and other fields. This paper summarizes the research progress of polymer nanofibers in optical sensors, classifies and analyzes polymer nanofiber optical sensors according to different functions (fluorescence, Raman, polarization, surface plasmon resonance, and photoelectrochemistry), and introduces the principles, structures, and properties of each type of sensor and application examples in different fields. This paper also looks forward to the future development directions and challenges of polymer nanofiber optical sensors, and provides a reference for in-depth research of sensors and industrial applications of polymer nanofibers.

Biomimetic Approach toward Visible Light-Driven Hydrogen Generation Based on a Porphyrin-Based Coordination Polymer Gel

There has been a widespread interest in developing self-assembled porphyrin nanostructures to mimic nature's light-harvesting processes. Herein, porphyrin-based coordination polymer gel (CPG) has been developed as a "soft" photocatalyst material for hydrogen (H₂) production from water under visible light. The CPG offers a hierarchical nanofibrous network structure obtained through self-assembly of a terpyridine alkyl-amide appended porphyrin (TPY-POR)-based low molecular weight gelator with ruthenium ions (Ru^II) and produces H₂ with a rate of 5.7 mmol g^-1 h^-1 in the presence of triethylamine (TEA) as a sacrificial electron donor. Further, the [Fe₂(bdt)(CO)₆] (dbt = 1,2-benzenedithiol) cocatalyst, which can mimic the activity of iron hydrogenase, is coassembled in the CPG and shows remarkable improvement in H₂ evolution (catalytic activity; rate ∼10.6 mmol g^-1 h^-1 and turnover number ∼1287). The significant enhancement in catalytic activity was supported by several controlled experiments, including femtosecond transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy and also DFT calculation. The TA study supported the cascade electron transfer process from porphyrin core to [Ru(TPY)₂]²⁺ center, and subsequently, the electron transfers to the cocatalyst [Fe₂(bdt)(CO)₆] for H₂ production.

Highly efficient degradation of ofloxacin and diclofenac by composite photocatalyst aloe-emodin/PMMA

Photocatalysis is one of the most effective methods to remove pollutants from water. Photocatalyst is the core of photocatalysis. The composite photocatalyst combines the photosensitizer with the support and uses the photosensitivity of the photosensitizer and the stability and adsorption of the support to achieve efficient and rapid degradation of pharmaceuticals in water. In this study, natural aloe-emodin with π-conjugated structure was used as photosensitizer to react with macroporous resin polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) under mild conditions to prepare composite photocatalysts AE/PMMAs. The photocatalyst underwent photogenerated electron migration under visible light to form ^•O₂^- and holes with high oxidation activity, which could realize efficient photocatalytic degradation of ofloxacin and diclofenac sodium and showed excellent stability, recyclability and industrial feasibility. This research has developed an efficient method of composite photocatalyst and realized the application of a natural photosensitizer in pharmaceutical degradations.

Study effect and mechanism of ofloxacin and levofloxacin on development of Rana nigromaculata tadpoles based on the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis

Excessive antibiotics transferred into the aquatic environment may affect the development of amphibians. Previous studies on the aquatic ecological risk of ofloxacin generally ignored its enantiomers. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects and mechanisms of ofloxacin (OFL) and levofloxacin (LEV) on the early development of Rana nigromaculata. After 28-day exposure at environmental levels, we found that LEV exerted more severe inhibitory effects on the development of tadpoles than OFL. According to the enrichment results of differentially expressed genes in the LEV and OFL treatments, LEV and OFL had different effects on the thyroid development of tadpoles. dio2 and trh were affected by the regulation of dexofloxacin instead of LEV. At the protein level, LEV was the main component that affected thyroid development-related protein, while dexofloxacin in OFL had little effect on thyroid development. Furthermore, molecular docking results further confirmed that LEV was a major component affecting thyroid development-related proteins, including DIO and TSH. In summary, OFL and LEV regulated the thyroid axis by differential binding to DIO and TSH proteins, thereby exerting differential effects on the thyroid development of tadpoles. Our research is of great significance for comprehensive assessment of chiral antibiotics aquatic ecological risk.

Internal electric field-assisted copper ions chelated polydopamine/titanium dioxide nano-thin film heterojunctions activate peroxymonosulfate under visible light to catalyze degradation of gatifloxacin: Theoretical calculations and biotoxicity analysis

The combination of photocatalysis and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation is considered effective in treating organic pollutants in water; however, the photocatalysts currently used to activate PMS are primarily in powder form, which cause secondary contamination because they are difficult to recycle. In this study, copper-ion-chelated polydopamine/titanium dioxide (Cu-PDA/TiO₂) nanofilm were prepared for PMS activation on fluorine-doped tin oxide substrates using hydrothermal and in-situ self-polymerization methods. The results showed that Cu-PDA/TiO₂ + PMS + Vis degraded 94.8% of gatifloxacin (GAT) within 60 min, and the reaction rate constant reached 4.928 × 10^-2 min^-1, which was 6.25 and 4.04 folds higher than that of TiO₂ + PMS + Vis (0.789 × 10^-2 min^-1) and PDA/TiO₂ + PMS + Vis (1.219 × 10^-2 min^-1), respectively. The Cu-PDA/TiO₂ nanofilm is easily recyclable and activates PMS to degrade GAT with no inferior performance, unlike the powder-based photocatalysts, and simultaneously maintains outstanding stability, which is highly suitable for applications in real aqueous environments. Biotoxicity experiments were conducted using E. coli, S. aureus, and mung bean sprouts as experimental subjects, and the results showed that the Cu-PDA/TiO₂ + PMS + Vis system had excellent detoxification ability. In addition, a detailed investigation of the formation mechanism of step-scheme (S-scheme) Cu-PDA/TiO₂ nanofilm heterojunctions was conducted by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Finally, a specific process for activating PMS to degrade GAT was proposed, which provides a novel photocatalysts for practical applications in aqueous pollution.

In situ formation of red/black phosphorus-modified SiO2@g-C3N4 multi-heterojunction for the enhanced photocatalytic degradation of organic contaminants

A new heterojunction material BP/RP-g-C₃N₄/SiO₂ was obtained by a one-step ball milling method, and its photocatalytic capacity was researched by the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) and ofloxacin (OFL) in simulated sunlight. The construction of an in situ BP/RP heterojunction can achieve perfect interface contact between different semiconductors and effectively promote the separation of photogenerated carriers. The composite material was well characterized, which proved that the multi-heterogeneous structure was prepared. Furthermore, the type II heterojunction was formed between the g-C₃N₄ and BP/RP interface, playing an important role in the degradation and promoting electron transfer. The degradation effect of BP/RP-g-C₃N₄/SiO₂ on RhB reached 90% after 26 min of simulated solar irradiation, which was 1.8 times that of g-C₃N₄/SiO₂. The degradation of OFL by BP/RP-g-C₃N₄/SiO₂ reached 85.3% after illumination for 50 min, while the degradation of g-C₃N₄/SiO₂ was only 35.4%. The mechanisms were further discussed, and ˙O₂ ^- and h⁺ were found to be the main active substances to degrade RhB. The catalyst also revealed distinguished stability of catalyst and recyclability, and the degradation effect of RhB can still realize 85% after 4 runs of experiment. Thus, this study provided a novel method for the design and preparation of multi-heterojunction catalysts in the removal of organic pollutants from wastewater.

Copper-doped perylene diimide supramolecules combined with TiO2 for efficient photoactivity

Designing organic-inorganic hybrid semiconductors is an effective strategy for improving the performance of the photocatalyst under visible light irradiation. In this experiment, we firstly introduced Cu into perylenediimide supramolecules (PDIsm) to prepare the novel Cu-dopped PDIsm (CuPDIsm) with one-dimensional structure and then incorporated CuPDIsm with TiO₂ to improve the photocatalytic performance. The introduction of Cu in PDIsm increases both the visible light adsorption and specific surface areas. Cu²⁺ coordination link between adjacent perylenediimide (PDI) moleculars and H-type π-π stacking of the aromatic core greatly accelerate the electron transfer in CuPDIsm system. Moreover, the photo-induced electrons generated by CuPDIsm migrate to TiO₂ nanoparticles through hydrogen bond and electronic coupling at the TiO₂/CuPDIsm heterojunction, which further accelerates the electron transfer and the separation efficiency of the charge carriers. So, the TiO₂/CuPDIsm composites exhibit excellent photodegradation activity under visible light irradiation, reaching the maximum values of 89.87 and 97.26% toward tetracycline and methylene blue, respectively. This study provides new prospects for the development of metal-dopping organic systems and the construction of inorganic-organic heterojunctions, which can effectively enhance the electron transfer and improve the photocatalytic performance.

PDINH bridged NH2-UiO-66(Zr) Z-scheme heterojunction for promoted photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction and antibacterial activity

Z-scheme mechanism was a promising approach to considerably enhance photocatalytic activity. In this work, the PDINH/NH₂-UiO-66(Zr) (PNU) heterojunctions were made using a facile ball-milling method. As expect, the optimum PNU-1 composite acted as highly active photocatalyst with 97% Cr(VI) to be reduced within 60 min of LED light illumination. Moreover, the antibacterial rate almost reached 100% for E. coli and S. aureus in 4 h, which was more conspicuous than the others. The wider light absorption range, promoted charge separation because of Z-scheme mechanism and efficient generation of reactive ¹O₂, •O₂^-, and •OH contributed greatly to the enhanced photocatalytic activity. Meanwhile, the superior stability and repeatability of the composites were also demonstrated by five cyclic experiments and related physicochemical characterizations. Therefore, this work provides a novel insight for designing high-efficiency Z-scheme heterostructures between MOFs and organic PDINH for wastewater remediation.

Catalyst-Free Photochemical Activation of Peroxymonosulfate in Xanthene-Rich Systems for Fenton-Like Synergistic Decontamination: Efficacy of Proton Transfer Process

Catalyst-free visible light assisted Fenton-like catalysis offers opportunities to achieve the sustainable water decontamination, but the synergistic decontamination mechanisms are still unclear, especially the effect of proton transfer process (PTP). The conversion of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in photosensitive dye-enriched system was detailed. The photo-electron transfer between excited dye and PMS triggered the efficient activation of PMS and enhanced the production of reactive species. Photochemistry behavior analysis and DFT calculations revealed that PTP was the crucial factor to determine the decontamination performance, leading to the transformation of dye molecules. The excitation process inducing activation of whole system was composed of low energy excitations, and the electrons and holes were almost contributed by LUMO and HOMO. This work provided new ideas for the design of catalyst-free sustainable system for efficient decontamination.

Ofloxacin Degradation over Nanosized Fe3O4 Catalyst viaThermal Activation of Persulfate Ions

In this work, an Fe3O4 catalyst was synthetized in a single step via electrochemical synthesis. The Fe3O4 catalyst was used to evaluate the degradation of Ofloxacin (OFX) using a heterogeneous advanced oxidation process with sodium persulfate (PS). PS activation was successfully achieved via thermal conventional heating directly and subsequently applied for the degradation of OFX. The degradation kinetics were studied under different conditions, such as catalyst and oxidant concentration and temperature. The results show that a higher reaction temperature, catalyst and initial PS dose strongly influence the degradation efficiency. Thermal activation of persulfate was tested at 20, 40 and 60 °C. At 60 °C, the half-time of OFX was 23 times greater than at 20 °C, confirming the activation of persulfate. Mineralization studies also showed that under optimized conditions (20 mM of persulfate, 1 g/L catalyst and 100 mg/L OFX), a 66% reduction in organic matter was observed, in contrast to that obtained at 40 °C and 20 °C, which was null. The reusability, as tested through the fourth reuse cycle, resulted in a 38% reduced degradation efficiency when comparing the first and last cycle. Furthermore, the electrosynthesized catalyst presented similar degradation efficiencies in both real water and MilliQ, mainly because of the Cl2− generation at high Cl− concentrations that takes place in Cl− contaminated water.

Solar-induced efficient propylparaben photodegradation by nitrogen vacancy engineered reticulate g-C3N4: Morphology, activity and mechanism

Propylparaben (PrP) has attracted extensive concerns due to its wide occurrence in wastewater and potential health risk. Herein, nitrogen vacancy engineered reticulate g-C₃N₄ (Nv-RCN) was successfully synthesized for the photodegradation of PrP. Nv-RCN exhibited larger specific surface area, greater light absorption ability, higher transfer and separation efficiency of charge carriers in comparison with bulk g-C₃N₄ (CN). According to the characterization results and DFT calculation, nitrogen vacancy could capture electrons and facilitate oxygen adsorption. The Nv-RCN exhibited an outstanding PrP removal efficiency of 94.3 %, and the corresponding apparent rate constant of Nv-RCN was 3.37 times higher than that of CN. High O₂ concentration (8 mg/L) and low pH value (pH = 3) promoted PrP photodegradation based on Box-Behnken Design. The O₂^- was the major radical during PCOP of Nv-RCN, and could oxidize PrP by decarbonylation and dealkylation. This study provided new insights to the improvement of photodegradation performance of g-C₃N₄ for parabens removal and related environmental remediation.

MXene-based composites as an electrochemical sensor for ultrasensitive determination of ofloxacin

Sensitive determination of ofloxacin (OFL) is very essential for human health and environmental protection. Here, a novel composite of gold nanoparticles(nAu)@MXene(Ti₃C₂T_x)/poly-p-aminobenzene sulfonic acid (PABSA) was fabricated on the surface of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and used to sensitively determine OFL. The results of experiments showed that the obtained nAu@Ti₃C₂T_x/PABSA/GCE electrode could be used as an electrochemical sensor to directly detect ofloxacin (OFL) by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Under the optimal conditions, the proposed electrode displayed a broader linear range and a lower detection limit (LOD) for OFL determination when it was compared to those similar sensors. The linear range was from 5.0 × 10^-8 to 5.0 × 10^-4 mol/L and the LOD was 3.7 × 10^-8 mol/L (S/N = 3). The nAu@Ti₃C₂T_x/PABSA/GCE electrode also showed good selectivity, repeatability, and reproducibility. Finally, the proposed electrode was used to detect OFL in commercial samples by the standard addition method. The obtained recovery was from 97.3% and 105.7% showing its potential applications in actual sample analysis.

Reuse of steel slag as a photocatalyst for tetracycline degradation: mechanism of oxygen vacancies

High value-added utilization of solid waste steel slag for the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline is realized by alkali activation.

Removal of ofloxacin from wastewater by chloride electrolyte electro-oxidation: Analysis of the role of active chlorine and operating costs

Electro-oxidation (EO) has received increasing attention as an efficient and green method for removing pollutants from wastewater. Chloride anions (Cl^-), which commonly exist in wastewater, can act as an electrolyte for the EO process. However, the role of reactive chlorine species (RCS) generated near electrodes is often underestimated. In this study, we generated hydroxyl radicals (OH) and RCS in a boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode system and investigated its degradation mechanism for ofloxacin (OFX) removal. The findings suggested that OFX degradation was dominated by OH existing near the anode in solution, with RCS playing a supporting role. Based on the produced intermediates, we proposed an OFX decomposition pathway. The biological toxicities of the intermediates were evaluated through the ECOSAR and T.E.S.T. procedure. Nearly half of the intermediates are less toxic than the parent compound. After optimizing the operating parameters by the response surface methodology, 20 mg/L OFX was almost completely degraded after 10 min of reaction in 1.45 g/L NaCl with a current density (j) of 18 mA/cm², and the total organic carbon was decreased by 30.55 %. The energy consumption and current efficiency were 0.648 kW·h/g_TOC and 8.65 %, respectively. Comparing the operating costs of the proposed and other EO methods, our method emerged as a viable new treatment scheme for similar polluted wastewaters. This study aims to comprehensively understand the potential application value of BDD electrodes in the treatment of Cl^- containing organic wastewater.

Critical role of tetracycline's self-promotion effects in its visible-light driven photocatalytic degradation over ZnO nanorods

Zinc oxide (ZnO), which is widely applied for ultraviolet-light driven photocatalysis, has no activity in visible-light photocatalytic process due to its large band gap of ∼3.2 eV. Herein, however, we demonstrated the multiple self-promotion effects of tetracycline as band adjuster, photo-sensitizer, and charge transfer promoter for ZnO nanorods, realizing its visible-light photocatalytic degradation with an excellent removal efficiency up to 91.1% within only 2 h. Besides, the influence of complex realistic factors on this unique process was evaluated together with tests with realistic water matrices. Furthermore, the active species and degradation products were identified. Both acute and developmental toxicities were found to be reduced as the degradation proceeds. These results pave the path for the brand-new self-driven visible-light photocatalysis.

Constructing mesoporous Zr-doped SiO2 onto efficient Z-scheme TiO2/g-C3N4 heterojunction for antibiotic degradation via adsorption-photocatalysis and mechanism insight

Novel modified-TiO₂/Zr-doped SiO₂/g-C₃N₄ ternary composite is fabricated via an in-situ grow of porous Zr-SiO₂ layer to TiO₂/g-C₃N₄ heterojunction, which exhibits well adsorption-photocatalytic performance under simulated solar light irradiation. The nano-size mesoporous TiO₂ are dispersed on the lamellar g-C₃N₄, and the Zr-SiO₂ is in-situ fabricated onto the surface of g-C₃N₄ sheets. The adsorption occurs on the SiO₂ layers, and doping Zr element to SiO₂ enhances the adsorption of pollutants, while the photocatalytic reaction occurs on the valence band (VB) of TiO₂ and conduction band (CB) of g-C₃N₄, which gives reactive oxygen species of ∙O₂^-, h⁺, and ∙OH for high efficient decomposition of antibiotics, i.e. berberine hydrochloride (98.11%), tetracycline (80.76%), and oxytetracycline (84.84%). The excellent adsorption capacity and Z-scheme photoinduced charge carrier migration behavior endowed the novel material with enhanced berberine hydrochloride (BH) removal in water, which approximately 2.5 and 3.8 folds than that of pure g-C₃N₄ and sole TiO₂, respectively. Three degradation pathways are unraveled by LC-MS and theoretical calculations. Furthermore, the toxicity of intermediates was evaluated by the Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (T.E.S.T.), the result demonstrated a good application potential of M-TiO₂/Zr-SiO₂/g-C₃N₄ as an novel adsorptive photocatalyst.

Ce(Ⅲ) activates peroxymonosulfate for the degradation of substituted PAHs

Substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (SPAHs) are being intensively investigated, considering their high toxicity. Additionally, the mechanism of the effect of substituents on the removal of SPAHs and the activation of Ce(III) ions on peroxymonosulfate (PMS) have not been explored. Here we evaluated the removal efficiency of SPAHs in the oxidation system constructed by Ce(Ⅲ) ions and PMS, with emphasized the effect of substituents on SPAHs degradation. Ce(Ⅲ) has high catalytic performance for PMS, and the degradation percentage of all pollutants was higher than 92%. The significantly negative correlation between the reaction rate constants of SPAHs and the highest occupied molecular orbital-the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gap, confirms that substituents lead to the differences in the degradation of SPAHs. The generation of reactive oxygen species (SO₄^•-, ^•OH, and ¹O₂) is based on the electron transfer between Ce(Ⅲ) and PMS, and the contribution of ROS to substituted naphthalene varies due to the role of substituents. The Ce(Ⅳ)/Ce(Ⅲ) cycle accelerates the activation of PMS. Based on the transformation products and condensed Fukui function, the possible degradation pathways are inferred. In addition, inorganic anions and organic matter have little effect on the Ce(Ⅲ)/PMS system, which is a prerequisite for applying this system to real-world waste-water for SPAHs removal. This work demonstrates a new model of the degradation mechanism of SPAHs in the Ce(Ⅲ)/PMS system.

Single-atom site catalysts for environmental remediation: Recent advances

Single-atom site catalysts (SACs) can maximize the utilization of active metal species and provide an attractive way to regulate the activity and selectivity of catalytic reactions. The adjustable coordination configuration and atomic structure of SACs enable them to be an ideal candidate for revealing reaction mechanisms in various catalytic processes. The minimum use of metals and relatively tight anchoring of the metal atoms significantly reduce leaching and environmental risks. Additionally, the unique physicochemical properties of single atom sites endow SACs with superior activity in various catalytic processes for environmental remediation (ER). Generally, SACs are burgeoning and promising materials in the application of ER. However, a systematic and critical review on the mechanism and broad application of SACs-based ER is lacking. Herein, we review emerging studies applying SACs for different ERs, such as eliminating organic pollutants in water, removing volatile organic compounds, purifying automobile exhaust, and others (hydrodefluorination and disinfection). We have summarized the synthesis, characterization, reaction mechanism and structural-function relationship of SACs in ER. In addition, the perspectives and challenges of SACs for ER are also analyzed. We expect that this review can provide constructive inspiration for discoveries and applications of SACs in environmental catalysis in the future.

Green synthesis of two-electron centre based ZnO/NiCo2S4 QDs-OVs using Punica granatum fruit peel extract for an exceptional visible light photocatalytic degradation of doxycycline and ciprofloxacin

Biosynthesis of nanomaterials using plant extract makes them attractive in the field of photocatalysis as they are environmental friendly. The current study focused on the biosynthesis of ZnO/NiCo₂S₄ QDs (NCs) using Punica granatum fruit peel extract as the reducing agent. The nanomaterials were characterized with XRD, FTIR, Raman, SEM, TEM, UV-vis DRS, BET, PL, EIS, and ESR analysis and were used for photocatalytic degradation of doxycycline (DOX) and ciprofloxacin (CIP). The bandgap of ZnO is 3.2 eV, and the decoration of NiCo₂S₄ QDs aids in narrowing the bandgap (2.8 eV), making the NCs visible light active. The fabricated NCs achieved 99 and 89% degradation of DOX and CIP respectively. The photocatalytic efficiency of ZnO/NiCo₂S₄ QDs was much higher compared to individual ZnO and NiCo₂S₄ QDs. The half-life period of DOX and CIP were evaluated to be 58 and 152 min respectively. The percentage of TOC removal in the photodegraded product of DOX and CIP was estimated to be 99 and 89% respectively, indicating the mineralization of the compounds. The enhanced photocatalytic efficiency of the NCs was attributed to the narrowed visible light active bandgap, synergistic charge transfer across the interface, and lower charge recombination. The intermediates formed during the photocatalytic degradation of DOX and CIP were analyzed using GC-MS/MS analysis, and the photodegradation pathway was elucidated. Also, the toxicity of the intermediates was computationally analyzed using ECOSAR software. The fabricated ZnO/NiCo₂S₄ QDs have excellent stability and reusability, confirmed by XRD and XPS analysis. The reusable efficiency of the NCs for the photocatalytic degradation of DOX and CIP were 98.93, and 99.4% respectively. Thus, the biologically fabricated NCs are shown to be an excellent photocatalyst and have wide applications in environmental remediation.

Enhancing hydroxyl radical production from cathodic ozone reduction during the ozone-electrolysis process with flow-through reactive electrochemical membrane cathode

In this study, a flow-through ozone-electrolysis (O₃-electrolysis) process was developed by combining ozonation with an electrolysis using a porous reactive electrochemical membrane (REM) cathode. Due to the convection-enhanced mass transport and fast radial diffusion inside the small pores of REM cathodes, the rate of cathodic O₃ reduction to ozonide radicals (O₃^•-) was significantly enhanced, while the further cathodic O₃^•- reduction to oxygen was inhibited during the flow-through O₃-electrolysis process compared to the conventional mixed-tank O₃-electrolysis process. Consequently, more hydroxyl radicals (•OH) were formed from O₃^•- decay in water during the flow-through O₃-electrolysis process than the mixed-tank O₃-electrolysis process. Corresponding to the higher •OH yields from cathodic O₃ reduction, the flow-through O₃-electrolysis process substantially enhanced the abatement kinetics and efficiency of para-benzoic acid (pCBA, a model compound of ozone-resistant micropollutant) in a groundwater than conventional ozonation and the mixed-tank O₃-electrolysis process. These results suggest that the flow-through O₃-electrolysis process may provide a competitive treatment technology for micropollutant abatement in water treatment.

Highly efficient photocatalytic degradation of norfloxacin via Bi2Sn2O7/PDIH Z-scheme heterojunction: Influence and mechanism

The severe pollution caused by antibiotics has prompted considerable concerns in recent decades. In this study, the Bi₂Sn₂O₇/PDIH Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst was synthesized and highly photocatalytic activity on norfloxacin was obtained. The degradation of norfloxacin reached 98.71% in 90 min under visible light. The apparent rate constant of norfloxacin (0.4 903 min^-1) was 3.65 and 20 times that of PDIH and the Bi₂Sn₂O₇. Meanwhile, XPS, electrochemical, Photoluminescence spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance results showed that Z-scheme charge-transfer process facilitated the spatial carrier separation and preserve redox capability. Furthermore, the degradation intermediates of norfloxacin and their toxicities were evaluated. Finally, in the view of the survey about the impact of different water matrices, it was found that the Bi₂Sn₂O₇/PDIH maintained high efficiency in raw natural water. This work enriched inorganic/organic heterojunction engineering for PDIH, and provided the enormous potential for combining the Bi₂Sn₂O₇ with PDIH to address the antibiotic pollution issues in the actual water treatment.

Boosting the photocatalytic activation of molecular oxygen and photodegradation of tetracycline: The role of interfacial synergistic effect of cocatalyst and dopants

Utilizing reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are generated by the activation of molecular oxygen (O₂) in oxidation reaction, is a promising method for pollutant degradation. However, it is limited by the commonly low efficiency of O₂ activation and carrier separation. Herein, as a model system, Ag cocatalyst and Cl doping modified g-C₃N₄ (Ag/Cl-CN) was constructed to improve the ability of O₂ activation. Results showed that Ag/Cl-CN could effectively convert more O₂ into ROS than pristine g-C₃N₄ (CN), and individually decorated CN (Ag-CN and Cl-CN). A series of experiments and DFT calculations revealed that the deposition of Ag could promote charge separation resulting in more charges accumulated around O₂ and the introduction of Cl led to a stronger adsorption capacity for O₂. Therefore, due to the synergistic effect of Ag cocatalyst and Cl dopant, Ag/Cl-CN generated higher concentrations of O₂^- and displayed much better activity for photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC) than CN, Ag-CN and Cl-CN.

Perylene diimide growth on both sides of carbon nanotubes for remarkably boosted photocatalytic degradation of diclofenac

Perylene diimide and its derivatives are promising photocatalysts for clean and efficient production, but their practical application in the field of photocatalysis is still limited by the rapid photogenerated charge recombination. In this work, the confined photocatalysts were synthesized by using a gas-phase self-assembly method and comparing the morphology and photocatalytic properties of different photocatalysts after the confinement of carbon nanotubes. The confinement effect of carbon nanotubes acts to stabilize perylene diimide. Electrostatic interaction formed by a wide range of dispersion forces is dominant in the process of stabilization. Benefitting from the three-dimensional electron transfer pathway formed by the conjugation of perylene diimide with a large number of π electrons to the carbon nanotubes plane, the confined photocatalyst shows the pseudo-first-order kinetic constant k of 1.106 h^-1 for the photocatalytic degradation of diclofenac under light, which is 6.11 times higher than that of perylene diimide. The electron transfer created an internal electric field at the interface from carbon nanotubes to perylene diimide, which greatly accelerated the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and improved the photocatalytic activity. This study further expands the applicability of perylene diimide in the field of photocatalysis and provides a new approach for water environment treatment.
