Progress in Conductive Polyaniline-Based Nanocomposites for Biomedical Applications: A Review

Advances in electroactive biomaterials: Through the lens of electrical stimulation promoting bone regeneration strategy

The regenerative capacity of bone is indispensable for growth, given that accidental injury is almost inevitable. Bone regenerative capacity is relevant for the aging population globally and for the repair of large bone defects after osteotomy (e.g., following removal of malignant bone tumours). Among the many therapeutic modalities proposed to bone regeneration, electrical stimulation has attracted significant attention owing to its economic convenience and exceptional curative effects, and various electroactive biomaterials have emerged. This review summarizes the current knowledge and progress regarding electrical stimulation strategies for improving bone repair. Such strategies range from traditional methods of delivering electrical stimulation via electroconductive materials using external power sources to self-powered biomaterials, such as piezoelectric materials and nanogenerators. Electrical stimulation and osteogenesis are related via bone piezoelectricity. This review examines cell behaviour and the potential mechanisms of electrostimulation via electroactive biomaterials in bone healing, aiming to provide new insights regarding the mechanisms of bone regeneration using electroactive biomaterials.

The translational potential of this article

This review examines the roles of electroactive biomaterials in rehabilitating the electrical microenvironment to facilitate bone regeneration, addressing current progress in electrical biomaterials and the mechanisms whereby electrical cues mediate bone regeneration. Interactions between osteogenesis-related cells and electroactive biomaterials are summarized, leading to proposals regarding the use of electrical stimulation-based therapies to accelerate bone healing.

Aristolochia bracteolata flower extract based phytosynthesis and characterization of AgNPs: Antimicrobial, antidiabetic, and antioxidant activities potential assessment

The study was carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the Aristolochia bracteolata water flower extract-mediated AgNPs synthesis and assess their antimicrobial potential. According to the experimental and analytical results, A. bracteolata flower extract can produce valuable AgNPs. The characteristic features of these AgNPs were assessed with UV-visible spectrophotometer, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscope, Scanning Electron Microscopy, as well as. Under UV-vis. spectrum results, showed major peak at 430 nm and recorded essential functional groups responsible for reducing, capping, and stabilizing AgNPs by FT-IR analysis. In addition, the size and shape of the synthesized AgNPs were found as 21.11-25.17 nm and spherical/octahedral shape. The A. bracteolata fabricated NPs showed remarkable antimicrobial activity against fish bacterial pathogens (V. parahaemolytics, Serratia sp., B. subtilis, and E. coli) as well as common fungal pathogens (A. niger, C. albicans, A. flavus, and A. terreus) at the quantity of 100 μg mL-1 than positive controls. Nevertheless, it was not effective against human bacterial pathogens. It concludes that AgNPs synthesized from A. bracteolata aqueous flower extract have excellent antimicrobial activity and may have a variety of biomedical applications.

Recent Advances in Conductive Polymers-Based Electrochemical Sensors for Biomedical and Environmental Applications

Electrochemical sensors play a pivotal role in various fields, such as biomedicine and environmental detection, due to their exceptional sensitivity, selectivity, stability, rapid response time, user-friendly operation, and ease of miniaturization and integration. In addition to the research conducted in the application field, significant focus is placed on the selection and optimization of electrode interface materials for electrochemical sensors. The detection performance of these sensors can be significantly enhanced by modifying the interface of either inorganic metal electrodes or printed electrodes. Among numerous available modification materials, conductive polymers (CPs) possess not only excellent conductivity exhibited by inorganic conductors but also unique three-dimensional structural characteristics inherent to polymers. This distinctive combination allows CPs to increase active sites during the detection process while providing channels for rapid ion transmission and facilitating efficient electron transfer during reaction processes. This review article primarily highlights recent research progress concerning CPs as an ideal choice for modifying electrochemical sensors owing to their remarkable features that make them well-suited for biomedical and environmental applications.

Biodegradable Conducting Polymer-Based Composites for Biomedical Applications-A Review

In recent years, researchers have increasingly directed their focus toward the biomedical field, driven by the goal of engineering polymer systems that possess a unique combination of both electrical conductivity and biodegradability. This convergence of properties holds significant promise, as it addresses a fundamental requirement for biomedical applications: compatibility with biological environments. These polymer systems are viewed as auspicious biomaterials, precisely because they meet this critical criterion. Beyond their biodegradability, these materials offer a range of advantageous characteristics. Their exceptional processability enables facile fabrication into various forms, and their chemical stability ensures reliability in diverse physiological conditions. Moreover, their low production costs make them economically viable options for large-scale applications. Notably, their intrinsic electrical conductivity further distinguishes them, opening up possibilities for applications that demand such functionality. As the focus of this review, a survey into the use of biodegradable conducting polymers in tissue engineering, biomedical implants, and antibacterial applications is conducted.

Thermodynamic model for voltammetric responses in conducting redox polymers

Electroactive polymer materials are known to play important roles in a vast spectrum of modern applications such as in supercapacitors, fuel cells, batteries, medicine, and smart materials, etc. They are usually divided into two main groups: first, conducting π-conjugated organic polymers, which conduct electricity by cation-radicals delocalized over a polymer chain; second, redox polymers, which conduct electricity via an electron-hopping mechanism. Polymer materials belonging to these two main groups have been thoroughly studied and their thermodynamic and kinetic models have been built. However, in recent decades a lot of mixed-type materials have been discovered and investigated. To the best of our knowledge, a thermodynamic-based description of conducting redox polymers (CRPs) has not been provided yet. In this work, we present a thermodynamic model for voltammetric responses of conducting redox polymers. The derived model allows one to extract thermodynamic parameters of a CRP including the polaron delocalization degree and redox active groups interaction constant. The model was verified with voltammetric experiments on three recently synthesized CRPs and showed a satisfactory predictive ability. The simulated data are in good agreement with the experiment. We believe that developing theoretical descriptions for CRPs and other types of electroactive materials with the ability to simulate their electrochemical responses may help in future realization of new systems with superior characteristics for electrochemical energy storage, chemical sensors, pharmacological applications, etc.

Synthesis and characterization of a nanostructure conductive copolymer based on polyaniline and polylactic acid as an effective substrate in proteins impedimetric biosensing

Despite of all the developments in DNA microarray technology, there is not sufficient knowledge about protein abundance or their function in processes such as proteolysis, phosphorylation. Therefore, there is a significant need for direct detection and quantification of proteins, especially in processes such as proteomics, drug design and disease prediction. The present work introduce the new generation of polymeric substrate based on polyaniline and, polylactic acid, which it was used for impedimetric sensor in detection of proteins in particular for bovine serum albumin (BSA). In this copolymerization, the polylactic acid-block-polyaniline copolymer (PLA-b-PANI) was synthesized to attach polylactic acid and polyaniline using epichlorohydrin as a coupling agent. The structure of synthesized compounds in all steps, were confirmed by FT-IR and, 1H-NMR. The thermal properties and, morphology were analyzed by DSC, TGA, and, SEM. Also the electrochemical characteristics of fabricated PLA-b-PANI electrode were investigated by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and Cyclic Voltammetry (CV). The results demonstrated that morphology of the PLA-b-PANI is sphere shape nanoparticles with dimension less than 100 nanometer diameters and, reasonable thermal properties. PLA-b-PANI was used to modify a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) to fabricate a BSA impedimetric sensor. In order to increase the performance of the proposed impedimetric sensor, optimization of incubation time, pH and amount of PLA-b-PANI were investigated. The results show that the impedimetric sensor has the highest response when the electrode surface is covered with 5 microliters of PLA-b-PANI, and is incubated in BSA solution with pH 6.5 for 5 min. Impedimetric results showed that the PLA-b-PANI has excellent properties in reducing the charge transfer resistance and increasing the electron charge transfer rate. The final impedimetric sensor exhibited good repeatability, reproducibility, and chemical stability within the linear concentration range of 0.1-20 μg L-1 of BSA, and a detection limit of 0.05 μg L-1.

Biocompatible PANI-Encapsulated Chemically Modified Nano-TiO2 Particles for Visible-Light Photocatalytic Applications

Polyaniline (PANI) constitutes a very propitious conductive polymer utilized in several biomedical, as well as environmental applications, including tissue engineering, catalysis, and photocatalysis, due to its unique properties. In this study, nano-PANI/N-TiO2 and nano-PANI/Ag-TiO2 photocatalytic composites were fabricated via aniline's oxidative polymerization, while the Ag-and N-chemically modified TiO2 nanopowders were synthesized through the sol-gel approach. All produced materials were fully characterized. Through micro-Raman and FT-IR analysis, the co-existence of PANI and chemically modified TiO2 particles was confirmed, while via XRD analysis the composites' average crystallite size was determined as ≈20 nm. The semi-crystal structure of polyaniline exhibits higher photocatalytic efficiency compared to that of other less crystalline forms. The spherical-shaped developed materials are innovative, stable (zeta potential in the range from -26 to -37 mV), and cost-effective, characterized by enhanced photocatalytic efficiency under visible light (energy band gaps ≈ 2 eV), and synthesized with relatively simple methods, with the possibility of recycling and reusing them in potential future applications in industry, in wastewater treatment as well as in biomedicine. Thus, the PANI-encapsulated Ag and N chemically modified TiO2 nanocomposites exhibit high degradation efficiency towards Rhodamine B dye upon visible-light irradiation, presenting simultaneously high biocompatibility in different normal cell lines.

Synthesis, spectroscopy, band gap energy and electrical conductivity of poly(dopamine-co-aniline) copolymer

Copolymerization is used to improve the solubility and processability of polymers and copolymers includes the individual properties of homopolymer. In this study, the poly(dopamine-co-aniline) (poly(DA-co-ANI) copolymer was synthesized and the UV-vis. absorption, optical band gap energy, fluorescence, FT-IR, SEM-EDS, MALDI-TOF-MS, XRD and electrical conductivity have been investigated. The obtained results for the poly(DA-co-ANI) copolymer were compared with the PDA and PANI homopolymers. It was observed that the poly(DA-co-ANI copolymer is soluble easily in NMP and DMF solvents. The optical band gap energy of the poly(DA-co-ANI) copolymer film were calculated. as 1.00 eV with favorable indirect transition. The poly(DA-co-ANI) copolymer showed the FL emission maximum bands at 390 and 533 nm wavelengths. It was observed from the SEM images that the poly(DA-co-ANI) has 0-1500 nm crystalline rectangular particles prepared in acidic media and 0-600 nm amorphous particles prepared in basic media. The electrical conductivity of the poly(DA-co-ANI) was 1.35 × 10-6 S/cm. In the MALDI-TOF-MS measurements, the number-average molecular weight of the copolymer was found as 2628 Da with a distribution up to 5500 Da. The poly(DA-co-ANI) copolymer, soluble in NMP and DMF solvents and with a low optical band gap energy can be utilized as optical, fluorescent, and semi-conductive material in biomedical applications.

Electroactive Polymers for On-Demand Drug Release

Conductive materials have played a significant role in advancing society into the digital era. Such materials are able to harness the power of electricity and are used to control many aspects of daily life. Conductive polymers (CPs) are an emerging group of polymers that possess metal-like conductivity yet retain desirable polymeric features, such as processability, mechanical properties, and biodegradability. Upon receiving an electrical stimulus, CPs can be tailored to achieve a number of responses, such as harvesting energy and stimulating tissue growth. The recent FDA approval of a CP-based material for a medical device has invigorated their research in healthcare. In drug delivery, CPs can act as electrical switches, drug release is achieved at a flick of a switch, thereby providing unprecedented control over drug release. In this review, recent developments in CP as electroactive polymers for voltage-stimuli responsive drug delivery systems are evaluated. The review demonstrates the distinct drug release profiles achieved by electroactive formulations, and both the precision and ease of stimuli response. This level of dynamism promises to yield "smart medicines" and warrants further research. The review concludes by providing an outlook on electroactive formulations in drug delivery and highlighting their integral roles in healthcare IoT.

Combining Step-Growth and Chain-Growth Polymerizations in One Pot: Light-Induced Fabrication of Conductive Nanoporous PEDOT-PCL Scaffold

A novel method based on light-induced fabrication of a poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-polycaprolactone (PEDOT-PCL) scaffold using phenacyl bromide (PAB) as a single-component photoinitiator is presented. HBr released from the step-growth polymerization of EDOT is utilized as an in situ catalyst for the chain-growth polymerization of ε-caprolactone. Detailed investigations disclose the formation of a self-assembled nanoporous electroconductive scaffold (1.2 mS cm-1 ). Fluorescence emission spectra of the fabricated scaffold exhibit a mixed solvatochromic behavior, indicating specific interactions between the self-assembled scaffold and solvents with varying polarities, as evidenced by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Moreover, the same light-induced technique can also be applied for bulk photopolymerization showcasing the versatility and wide-ranging scope of the originated method. In brief, this study introduces a novel approach for light-induced polymerization reactions that is merging step-growth and chain-growth mechanisms. This innovative approach is promising to facilitate in situ polymerization of monomers possessing diverse functionalities.

Polyaniline-metal oxide coatings for biocidal applications: Mechanisms of activation and deactivation

Metal oxide (MO) coatings (e.g. TiO2, ZnO, and CuO) have shown great promise to inactivate pathogenic bacteria, maintain self-cleaning surfaces, and prevent infectious diseases spread via surface contact. Under light illumination, the antibacterial performance of photoactive MO coatings is determined by reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. However, several drawbacks, such as photo-corrosion and rapid electron-hole recombination, hinder the ROS production of MO coatings and diminish their antibacterial efficiency. In this study, we employed polyaniline (PANI), an inexpensive and easy-to-synthesize conductive polymer, to fabricate polyaniline-metal oxide composite (PMC) films. The antibacterial performance of PMC films was tested using E. coli as the model bacterium and Lake Michigan water (LMW) as the background medium and revealed enhanced antibacterial performance relative to MO coatings alone (approximately 75-90 % kill of E. coli by PMC coatings in comparison to 20-40 % kill by MO coatings), which is explained by an increase in the ROS yields of PMC. However, with repeated use, the antibacterial performance of the PMC coatings is diminished due to deprotonation of the PANI in the neutral/slightly basic aqueous environment of LMW. Overall, PANI can enhance the antibacterial performance of MO coatings, but efforts need to be directed to preserve or regenerate PMC stability under environmental conditions and applications.

Advances in Conductive Hydrogel for Spinal Cord Injury Repair and Regeneration

Spinal cord injury (SCI) treatment represents a major challenge in clinical practice. In recent years, the rapid development of neural tissue engineering technology has provided a new therapeutic approach for spinal cord injury repair. Implanting functionalized electroconductive hydrogels (ECH) in the injury area has been shown to promote axonal regeneration and facilitate the generation of neuronal circuits by reshaping the microenvironment of SCI. ECH not only facilitate intercellular electrical signaling but, when combined with electrical stimulation, enable the transmission of electrical signals to electroactive tissue and activate bioelectric signaling pathways, thereby promoting neural tissue repair. Therefore, the implantation of ECH into damaged tissues can effectively restore physiological functions related to electrical conduction. This article focuses on the dynamic pathophysiological changes in the SCI microenvironment and discusses the mechanisms of electrical stimulation/signal in the process of SCI repair. By examining electrical activity during nerve repair, we provide insights into the mechanisms behind electrical stimulation and signaling during SCI repair. We classify conductive biomaterials, and offer an overview of the current applications and research progress of conductive hydrogels in spinal cord repair and regeneration, aiming to provide a reference for future explorations and developments in spinal cord regeneration strategies.

A novel biomimetic nanofibrous cardiac tissue engineering scaffold with adjustable mechanical and electrical properties based on poly(glycerol sebacate) and polyaniline

Biomaterial tissue engineering scaffolds play a critical role in providing mechanical support, promoting cells growth and proliferation. However, due to the insulation and inappropriate stiffness of most biomaterials, there is an unmet need to engineer a biomimetic nanofibrous cardiac tissue engineering scaffold with tailorable mechanical and electrical properties. Here, we demonstrate for the first time the feasibility to generate a novel type of biocompatible fibrous scaffolds by blending elastic poly(glycerol sebacate) (PGS) and conductive polyaniline (PANI) with the help of a nontoxic carrier polymer, poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA). Aligned and random PGS/PANI scaffolds are successfully obtained after electrospinning, cross-linking, water and ethanol wash. Incorporating of different concentrations of PANI into PGS fibers, the fibrous sheets show enhanced conductivity and slower degradation rates while maintaining the favorable hemocompatibility. The elastic modulus of the PGS/PANI scaffolds is in the range of 0.65-2.18 MPa under wet conditions, which is similar to that of natural myocardium. All of these fibrous mats show good cell viability and were able to promote adhesion and proliferation of H9c2 cells. Furthermore, the in vivo host responses of both random and aligned scaffolds confirm their good biocompatibility. Therefore, these PGS/PANI scaffolds have great potential for cardiac tissue engineering.

Low-Cost Optical pH Sensor with a Polyaniline (PANI)-Sensitive Layer Based on Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) Components

In this paper, we presented a novel, compact, conceptually simple, and fully functional low-cost prototype of a pH sensor with a PANI thin film as a sensing layer. The PANI deposition process is truly low-cost; it performs from the liquid phase, does not required any specialized equipment, and comprises few processing steps. The resulting PANI layer has excellent stability, resistance to solvents, and bio- and chemical compatibility. The pH sensor's sensing part includes only a few components such as a red-light-emitting diode (LED) as a light source, and a corresponding photodiode (PD) as a detector. Unlike other PANI-based sensors, it requires no sophisticated and expensive techniques and components such lasers to excite the PANI or spectrometry to identify the PANI color change induced by pH variation. The pH sensor is sensitive in the broad pH range of 3 to 9, which is useful for numerous practical applications. The sensor requires a tiny volume of the test specimen, as little as 55 µL. We developed a fully integrated packaging solution for the pH sensor that comprises a limited number of components. The pH sensor comprises exclusively commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components and standard printed circuit boards. The pH sensor is assembled using standard surface mounting technology (SMT).

Synthesis and Characterization of a Novel Nanosized Polyaniline

Polyaniline (PANI) is a conductive polymer easily converted into a conducting state. However, its limited mechanical properties have generated interest in fabricating PANI composites with other polymeric materials. In this study, a PANI-prevulcanized latex composite film was synthesized and fabricated in two phases following chronological steps. The first phase determined the following optimum parameters for synthesizing nanosized PANI, which were as follows: an initial molar ratio of 1, a stirring speed of 600 rpm, a synthesis temperature of 25 °C, purification via filtration, and washing using dopant acid, acetone, and distilled water. The use of a nonionic surfactant, Triton X-100, at 0.1% concentration favored PANI formation in a smaller particle size of approximately 600 nm and good dispersibility over seven days of observation compared to the use of anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) showed that the PANI synthesized using a surfactant was in the emeraldine base form, as the washing process tends to decrease the doping level in the PANI backbone. Our scanning electron microscopy analysis showed that the optimized synthesis parameters produced colloidal PANI with an average particle size of 695 nm. This higher aspect ratio explained the higher conductivity of nanosized PANI compared to micron-sized PANI. Following the chronological steps to determine the optimal parameters produced a nanosized PANI powder. The nanosized PANI had higher conductivity than the micron-sized PANI because of its higher aspect ratio. When PANI is synthesized in smaller particle sizes, it has higher conductivity. Atomic force microscopy analysis showed that the current flow is higher across a 5 µm2 scanned area of nanosized PANI because it has a larger surface area. Thus, more sites for the current to flow through were present on the nanosized PANI particles.

Flexible and sewable electrode based on Ni-Co@PANI-salphen composite-coated on textiles for wearable supercapacitor

Flexible electrodes with high deformability and energy density are critical for electronic textiles. The key factor for achieving high-performance supercapacitors with superior power and energy density is the evaluation of materials that exhibit exceptional capacitive performance. Herein, we have prepared Ni-Co nanoparticles at the surface of polyaniline-salphen (Ni-Co@PS). Then, followed by casting Ni-Co@PS on a conductive carbon cloth (CC) as a substrate through a facile in-situ polymerization strategy. The morphologies of Ni-Co@PS composite were characterized by different methods such as FE-SEM, XPS, XRD, BET, and electrochemical methods. This nanocomposite showed high tolerability and a large surface area with excellent behavior as a new nanomaterial for supercapacitor application. Thus, the optimum composite designed with a metal ratio (nickel-cobalt 3:1 w/w) satisfactorily possesses a specific capacitance of up to 549.994 C g-1 (1447.2 F g-1) under 0.5 A g-1 and long-term cyclic stability featuring capacity retention of 95.9% after 5000 cycles at a current density of 9.0 A g-1. The Ni-Co@PS-CC, is a material with great potential as an electrode in asymmetric wearable supercapacitor (AWSC) apparatus, demonstrating a remarkable specific capacity of 70.01, and accompanied by an energy density of 23.46 Wh k g-1 at a power density of 800 W k g-1.

Application of nanomaterials as potential quorum quenchers for disease: Recent advances and challenges

Chemical signal molecules are used by bacteria to interact with one another. Small hormone-like molecules known as autoinducers are produced, released, detected, and responded to during chemical communication. Quorum Sensing (QS) is the word for this procedure; it allows bacterial populations to communicate and coordinate group behavior. Several research has been conducted on using inhibitors to prevent QS and minimize the detrimental consequences. Through the enzymatic breakdown of the autoinducer component, by preventing the formation of autoinducers, or by blocking their reception by adding some compounds (inhibitors) that can mimic the autoinducers, a technique known as "quorum quenching" (QQ) disrupts microbial communication. Numerous techniques, including colorimetry, electrochemistry, bioluminescence, chemiluminescence, fluorescence, chromatography-mass spectroscopy, and many more, can be used to test QS/QQ. They all permit quantitative and qualitative measurements of QS/QQ molecules. The mechanism of QS and QQ, as well as the use of QQ in the prevention of biofilms, are all elaborated upon in this writing, along with the fundamental study of nanoparticle (NP)in QQ. Q.

Designing Biomimetic Conductive Gelatin-Chitosan-Carbon Black Nanocomposite Hydrogels for Tissue Engineering

Conductive nanocomposites play a significant role in tissue engineering by providing a platform to support cell growth, tissue regeneration, and electrical stimulation. In the present study, a set of electroconductive nanocomposite hydrogels based on gelatin (G), chitosan (CH), and conductive carbon black (CB) was synthesized with the aim of developing novel biomaterials for tissue regeneration application. The incorporation of conductive carbon black (10, 15 and 20 wt.%) significantly improved electrical conductivity and enhanced mechanical properties with the increased CB content. We employed an oversimplified unidirectional freezing technique to impart anisotropic morphology with interconnected porous architecture. An investigation into whether any anisotropic morphology affects the mechanical properties of hydrogel was conducted by performing compression and cyclic compression tests in each direction parallel and perpendicular to macroporous channels. Interestingly, the nanocomposite with 10% CB produced both anisotropic morphology and mechanical properties, whereas anisotropic pore morphology diminished at higher CB concentrations (15 and 20%), imparting a denser texture. Collectively, the nanocomposite hydrogels showed great structural stability as well as good mechanical stability and reversibility. Under repeated compressive cyclic at 50% deformation, the nanocomposite hydrogels showed preconditioning, characteristic hysteresis, nonlinear elasticity, and toughness. Overall, the collective mechanical behavior resembled the mechanics of soft tissues. The electrical impedance associated with the hydrogels was studied in terms of the magnitude and phase angle in dry and wet conditions. The electrical properties of the nanocomposite hydrogels conducted in wet conditions, which is more physiologically relevant, showed a decreasing magnitude with increased CB concentrations, with a resistive-like behavior in the range 1 kHz-1 MHz and a capacitive-like behavior for frequencies <1 kHz and >1 MHz. Overall, the impedance of the nanocomposite hydrogels decreased with increased CB concentrations. Together, these nanocomposite hydrogels are compositionally, morphologically, mechanically, and electrically similar to native ECMs of many tissues. These gelatin-chitosan-carbon black nanocomposite hydrogels show great promise for use as conducting substrates for the growth of electro-responsive cells in tissue engineering.

A review of glycosaminoglycan-modified electrically conductive polymers for biomedical applications

The application areas of electrically conductive polymers have been steadily growing since their discovery in the late 1970s. Recently, electrically conductive polymers have found their way into biomedicine, allowing the realization of many relevant applications ranging from bioelectronics to scaffolds for tissue engineering. Extracellular matrix components, such as glycosaminoglycans, build an important class of biomaterials that are heavily researched for biomedical applications due to their favorable properties. Due to their highly anionic character and the presence of sulfate groups in glycosaminoglycans, these biomolecules can be employed to functionalize conductive polymers, which enables the tailorability and improvement of cell-material interactions of conductive polymers. This review paper gives an overview of recent research on glycosaminoglycan-modified conductive polymers intended for biomedical applications and discusses the effect of different biological dopants on material characteristics, such as surface roughness, stiffness, and electrochemical properties. Moreover, the key findings of the biological characterization in vitro and in vivo are summarized, and remaining challenges in the field, particularly related to the modification of electrically conductive polymers with glycosaminoglycans to achieve improved functional and biological outcomes, are discussed. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The development of functional biomaterials based on electrically conductive polymers (CPs) for various biomedical applications, such as neural regeneration, drug delivery, or bioelectronics, has been increasingly investigated over the last decades. Recent literature has shown that changes in the synthesis procedure or the chosen dopant could adjust the resulting material characteristics. Hence, an interesting approach lies in using natural biomolecules as dopants for CPs to tailor the biological outcome. This review comprehensively summarizes the state of the art in the field of glycosaminoglycan-modified electrically conductive polymers for the first time, particularly highlighting the effect of the chosen dopant on material characteristics, such as surface morphology or stiffness, electrochemical properties, and consequently, cell-material interactions.

Regioselective ortho C-H insertion of N-nitrosoanilines with naphthoquinone carbenes

A Rh(III)-catalyzed ortho C-H migratory insertion of N-nitrosoanilines with naphthoquinone carbenes has been developed. The products were obtained in good yields under mild reaction conditions. Diverse elaborations of the products were explored. This method is valuable for the synthesis of biarylamines and their derivatives.

Conjugated Polymeric Materials in Biological Imaging and Cancer Therapy

Conjugated polymers (CPs) have attracted much attention in the fields of chemistry, medicine, life science, and material science. Researchers have carried out a series of innovative researches and have made significant research progress regarding the unique photochemical and photophysical properties of CPs, expanding the application range of polymers. CPs are polymers formed by the conjugation of multiple repeating light-emitting units. Through precise control of their structure, functional molecules with different properties can be obtained. Fluorescence probes with different absorption and emission wavelengths can be obtained by changing the main chain structure. By modifying the side chain structure with water-soluble groups or selective recognition molecules, electrostatic interaction or specific binding with specific targets can be achieved; subsequently, the purpose of selective recognition can be achieved. This article reviews the research work of CPs in cell imaging, tumor diagnosis, and treatment in recent years, summarizes the latest progress in the application of CPs in imaging, tumor diagnosis, and treatment, and discusses the future development direction of CPs in cell imaging, tumor diagnosis, and treatment.

Key Factors in Enhancing Pseudocapacitive Properties of PANI-InOx Hybrid Thin Films Prepared by Sequential Infiltration Synthesis

Sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) is an emerging vapor-phase synthetic route for the preparation of organic-inorganic composites. Previously, we investigated the potential of polyaniline (PANI)-InO_x composite thin films prepared using SIS for application in electrochemical energy storage. In this study, we investigated the effects of the number of InO_x SIS cycles on the chemical and electrochemical properties of PANI-InO_x thin films via combined characterization using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The area-specific capacitance values of PANI-InO_x samples prepared with 10, 20, 50, and 100 SIS cycles were 1.1, 0.8, 1.4, and 0.96 mF/cm², respectively. Our result shows that the formation of an enlarged PANI-InO_x mixed region directly exposed to the electrolyte is key to enhancing the pseudocapacitive properties of the composite films.

Preparation and evaluation of some nanocarbon (NC) based composites for optoelectronic applications

Polyaniline/nanocarbon (PANI/NC) nanocomposites have been prepared by in situ polymerization of aniline monomer in the presence of a stable colloidal solution of nanocarbon NC using ammonium persulfate as an initiator and silver ions (Ag⁺) as oxidizing agents to produce PANI/NC and PANI/NC/Ag₂O nanocomposites, respectively. The morphological studies of the formed nanocomposites have been elucidated via transmission and scanning electron microscopes (TEM and SEM). Further characterization of the prepared nanocomposites has been done via infrared spectroscopy (IR), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), particle size distribution analysis (PSD), fluorescence microscope (FM), UV-VIS spectroscopy, and finally surface analysis. XRD results confirmed the presence of silver oxide Ag₂O nanoparticles, and the obtained data is well matched with the JCPDS card number 76-1393 of silver oxide. XPS analyses have shown two prevailing characteristic peaks for Ag 3d5/2 and Ag 3d3/2 at 367.1 and 373 eV, respectively, representing Ag₂O nanoparticles, which are matchable with the XRD analysis. The PSD analysis revealed that the sizes of the prepared nanocomposites are in the size range from 60 to 140 nm. The FM measurements showed luminescence from the prepared nanocomposites upon irradiation with different lights. This recommends that the fluorophores present in the prepared nanocomposites have the potential to both absorb and emit light. The AC conductivity and the dielectric permittivity of the obtained nanocomposites at room temperature and at different frequency ranges have been investigated. At higher frequency ranges, the maximum ac conductivity obtained was 1.06 × 10^-2 and 2.5 × 10^-2 S.Cm^-1 for the PANI/NC and PANI/NC/Ag₂O, respectively. As far as we know, these new nanocomposites with superior optical and electrical characteristics have not been described yet in the literature.

pH-responsive ratiometric photoacoustic imaging of polyaniline nanoparticle-coated needle for targeted cancer biopsy

Cancer microenvironment exhibits lower pH compared to healthy tissues, a characteristic which can be exploited using a pH-responsive needle to increase the accuracy of cancer biopsy. A needle, coated with pH-responsive polyaniline (PANI) nanoparticles (PANI-needle), is developed for the minimally invasive and quantitative pH analysis of tissue based on ratiometric photoacoustic (PA) imaging. The ratiometric PA signal from the PANI-needle within the 850-700 nm wavelength range shows a linear response as pH changes from 7.5 to 6.5. Owing to the high surface area of nanostructured PANI, the PA signal of PANI-needle exhibits a fast and reversible response of less than a few seconds. In a tissue-mimicking hydrogel phantom composed of two regions with different pH, PA ratios of PANI-needle successfully differentiate the local pH. The PANI-needle coupled with ultrasound-guided PA imaging is a promising technology for detection of malignant tissue through quantitative pH analysis during needle biopsy.

Recent Advances in Conjugated Polymer-Based Biosensors for Virus Detection

Nowadays, virus pandemics have become a major burden seriously affecting human health and social and economic development. Thus, the design and fabrication of effective and low-cost techniques for early and accurate virus detection have been given priority for prevention and control of such pandemics. Biosensors and bioelectronic devices have been demonstrated as promising technology to resolve the major drawbacks and problems of the current detection methods. Discovering and applying advanced materials have offered opportunities to develop and commercialize biosensor devices for effectively controlling pandemics. Along with various well-known materials such as gold and silver nanoparticles, carbon-based materials, metal oxide-based materials, and graphene, conjugated polymer (CPs) have become one of the most promising candidates for preparation and construction of excellent biosensors with high sensitivity and specificity to different virus analytes owing to their unique π orbital structure and chain conformation alterations, solution processability, and flexibility. Therefore, CP-based biosensors have been regarded as innovative technologies attracting great interest from the community for early diagnosis of COVID-19 as well as other virus pandemics. For providing precious scientific evidence of CP-based biosensor technologies in virus detection, this review aims to give a critical overview of the recent research related to use of CPs in fabrication of virus biosensors. We emphasize structures and interesting characteristics of different CPs and discuss the state-of-the-art applications of CP-based biosensors as well. In addition, different types of biosensors such as optical biosensors, organic thin film transistors (OTFT), and conjugated polymer hydrogels (CPHs) based on CPs are also summarized and presented.

Electrochemical Biosensing of L-DOPA Using Tyrosinase Immobilized on Carboxymethyl Starch-Graft-Polyaniline@MWCNTs Nanocomposite

The electrochemical behavior of the immobilized tyrosinase (Tyrase) on a modified glassy carbon electrode with carboxymethyl starch-graft-polyaniline/multi-walled carbon nanotubes nanocomposite (CMS-g-PANI@MWCNTs) was investigated. The molecular properties of CMS-g-PANI@MWCNTs nanocomposite and its morphological characterization were examined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). A simple drop-casting method was employed to immobilize Tyrase on the CMS-g-PANI@MWCNTs nanocomposite. In the cyclic voltammogram (CV), a pair of redox peaks were observed at the potentials of +0.25 to -0.1 V and E°' was equal to 0.1 V and the apparent rate constant of electron transfer (K_s) was calculated at 0.4 s^-1. Using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), the sensitivity and selectivity of the biosensor were investigated. The biosensor exhibits linearity towards catechol and L-dopa in the concentration range of 5-100 and 10-300 μM with a sensitivity of 2.4 and 1.11 μA μΜ^-1 cm^-2 and limit of detection (LOD) 25 and 30 μM, respectively. The Michaelis-Menten constant (K_m) was calculated at 42 μΜ for catechol and 86 μΜ for L-dopa. After 28 working days, the biosensor provided good repeatability and selectivity, and maintained 67% of its stability. The existence of -COO^- and -OH groups in carboxymethyl starch, -NH₂ groups in polyaniline, and high surface-to-volume ratio and electrical conductivity of multi-walled carbon nanotubes in the CMS-g-PANI@MWCNTs nanocomposite cause good Tyrase immobilization on the surface of the electrode.

Research progress of advanced microneedle drug delivery system and its application in biomedicine

Transdermal drug delivery is an effective way of drug delivery in addition to oral and intravenous administration. Among them, microneedle administration is a new type of subcutaneous drug delivery, which forms micron-level pores on the surface of the skin, making the drug enter the dermis through the cuticular layer of the skin in the least invasive way. This mode of drug delivery not only increases the permeation efficiency of transdermal drug delivery but also improves the bioavailability of drug delivery. At present, there are many kinds of research on microneedles, such as solid microneedles, hollow microneedles, soluble polymer microneedles, etc. However, some new microneedle drug delivery systems have been gradually developed and applied with the development of microneedle drug delivery technology, for meeting the more complex pathological environment. In this review, we focus on the principle, structure, and function of some new types of microneedles, such as stimulus-response microneedles, iontophoresis microneedles, and bionic microneedles. We summarize the effects of materials, geometry, and size on the properties of microneedles as well as their applications and potential developments in the field of biomedicine. We hope that this review can provide new ideas and help with the development of new microneedle drug delivery systems.

Nanostructured Polyaniline Films Functionalized through Auxiliary Nitrogen Addition in Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Polymerization

Polyaniline (PANI) was synthesized from liquid aniline, a nitrogen-containing aromatic compound, through the atmospheric pressure (AP) plasma process using a newly designed plasma jet array with wide spacing between plasma jets. To expand the area of the polymerized film, the newly proposed plasma jet array comprises three AP plasma jet devices spaced 7 mm apart in a triangular configuration and an electrodeless quartz tube capable of applying auxiliary gas in the center of the triangular plasma jets. The vaporized aniline monomer was synthesized into a PANI film using the proposed plasma array device. The effects of nitrogen gas addition on the morphological, chemical, and electrical properties of PANI films in AP argon plasma polymerization were examined. The iodine-doped PANI film was isolated from the atmosphere through encapsulation. The constant electrical resistance of the PANI film indicates that the conductive PANI film can achieve the desired resistance by controlling the atmospheric exposure time through encapsulation.

Fabrication and desired properties of conductive hydrogel dressings for wound healing

Conductive hydrogels are platforms recognized as constituting promising materials for tissue engineering applications. This is because such conductive hydrogels are characterized by the inherent conductivity properties while retaining favorable biocompatibility and mechanical properties. These conductive hydrogels can be particularly useful in enhancing wound healing since their favorable conductivity can promote the transport of essential ions for wound healing via the imposition of a so-called transepithelial potential. Other valuable properties of these conductive hydrogels, such as wound monitoring, stimuli-response etc., are also discussed in this study. Crucially, the properties of conductive hydrogels, such as 3D printability and monitoring properties, suggest the possibility of its use as an alternative wound dressing to traditional dressings such as bandages. This review, therefore, seeks to comprehensively explore the functionality of conductive hydrogels in wound healing, types of conductive hydrogels and their preparation strategies and crucial properties of hydrogels. This review will also assess the limitations of conductive hydrogels and future perspectives, with an emphasis on the development trend for conductive hydrogel uses in wound dressing fabrication for subsequent clinical applications.

Applications of Polyaniline-Based Molybdenum Disulfide Nanoparticles against Brain-Eating Amoebae

Primary amoebic meningoencephalitis and granulomatous amoebic encephalitis are distressing infections of the central nervous system caused by brain-eating amoebae, namely, Naegleria fowleri and Acanthamoeba spp., respectively, and present mortality rates of over 90%. No single drug has been approved for use against these infections, and current therapy is met with an array of obstacles including high toxicity and limited specificity. Thus, the development of alternative effective chemotherapeutic agents for the management of infections due to brain-eating amoebae is a crucial requirement to avert future mortalities. In this paper, we synthesized a conducting polymer-based nanocomposite entailing polyaniline (PANI) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) and explored its anti-trophozoite and anti-cyst potentials against Acanthamoeba castellanii and Naegleria fowleri. The intracellular generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and ultrastructural appearances of amoeba were also evaluated with treatment. Throughout, treatment with the 1:2 and 1:5 ratios of PANI/MoS₂ at 100 μg/mL demonstrated significant anti-amoebic effects toward A. castellanii as well as N. fowleri, appraised to be ROS mediated and effectuate physical alterations to amoeba morphology. Further, cytocompatibility toward human keratinocyte skin cells (HaCaT) and primary human corneal epithelial cells (pHCEC) was noted. For the first time, polymer-based nanocomposites such as PANI/MoS₂ are reported in this study as appealing options in the drug discovery for brain-eating amoebae infections.

Electrochemical performance optimization of the polyaniline electrodeposited on ITO substrate

We have elaborated polyaniline films on ITO substrate (indium tin oxide), by electrochemical process in different electrolytes (HCl, H2SO4, HNO3, and H3BO3), which allowed us to study the effect of the counter ion on electrochemical energy storage performances of polyaniline as electrode material in supercapacitors. The study of the different obtained films performances was carried out by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge method and is interpreted by the SEM technique. We found that there is a clear dependence on the specific capacitance of the counter ion. Justified by its porous structure, the PANI/ITO electrode doped with SO42- has the highest specific capacitance, 57.3 mF/cm2 at a current density of 0.2 mA/cm2 and 64.8 mF/cm2 at 5 mV/s. The deep analysis by Dunn's method allowed us to conclude that the faradic process dominates the energy storage in the case of PANI/ITO electrode elaborated in boric acid (99%). On the contrary, the capacitive character is the most contributory in the case of electrodes elaborated in H2SO4, HCl, and HNO3. The study at different potentials (0.80, 0.85, 0.90, 0.95, and 1.0 V/SCE) from 0.2 M monomer aniline showed that the deposition at 0.95 V/SCE leads to higher specific capacitance (24.3 mF/cm2 at scan rate 5 mV/s and 23.6 mF/cm2 at 0.2 mA/cm2) with a coulombic efficiency of 94%. By varying the concentration of the monomer while keeping a potential fixed at 0.95 V/SCE, we also found that the specific capacitance increases with monomeric concentration.

Soft Fiber Electronics Based on Semiconducting Polymer

Fibers, originating from nature and mastered by human, have woven their way throughout the entire history of human civilization. Recent developments in semiconducting polymer materials have further endowed fibers and textiles with various electronic functions, which are attractive in applications such as information interfacing, personalized medicine, and clean energy. Owing to their ability to be easily integrated into daily life, soft fiber electronics based on semiconducting polymers have gained popularity recently for wearable and implantable applications. Herein, we present a review of the previous and current progress in semiconducting polymer-based fiber electronics, particularly focusing on smart-wearable and implantable areas. First, we provide a brief overview of semiconducting polymers from the viewpoint of materials based on the basic concepts and functionality requirements of different devices. Then we analyze the existing applications and associated devices such as information interfaces, healthcare and medicine, and energy conversion and storage. The working principle and performance of semiconducting polymer-based fiber devices are summarized. Furthermore, we focus on the fabrication techniques of fiber devices. Based on the continuous fabrication of one-dimensional fiber and yarn, we introduce two- and three-dimensional fabric fabricating methods. Finally, we review challenges and relevant perspectives and potential solutions to address the related problems.

Copperphosphotungstate Doped Polyanilines Nanorods for GSH-Depletion Enhanced Chemodynamic/NIR-II Photothermal Synergistic Therapy

Introduction

The high concentration of glutathione (GSH) and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) levels within the tumor microenvironment (TME) are the major obstacle to induce the unsatisfactory anticancer treatment efficiency. The synergistic cancer therapy strategies of the combination the GSH depletion enhanced chemodynamic therapy (CDT) with photothermal therapy (PTT) have been proved to be the promising method to significantly improve the therapeutic efficacy.

Methods

The copperphosphotungstate was incorporated into polyanilines to design copperphosphotungstate doped polyaniline nanorods (CuPW@PANI Nanorods) via chemical oxidant polymerization of aniline. The low long-term toxicity and biocompatibility were evaluated. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments were carried out to confirm the GSH depletion enhanced CDT/NIR-II PTT synergistic therapy.

Results

CuPW@PANI Nanorods feature biosafety and biocompatibility, strong NIR-II absorbance, and high photothermal-conversion efficiency (45.14%) in NIR-II bio-window, making them highly applicable for photoacoustic imaging and NIR-II PTT. Moreover, CuPW@PANI Nanorods could consume endogenous GSH to disrupt redox homeostasis and perform a Fenton-like reaction with H₂O₂ to produce cytotoxic •OH for the enhanced CDT. Furthermore, NIR-II photothermal-induced local hyperthermia accelerates •OH generation to enhance CDT, which realizes high therapeutic efficacy in vivo.

Conclusion

This study provides a proof of concept of GSH-depletion augmented chemodynamic/NIR-II photothermal therapy.

Polylactic Acid/Polyaniline Nanofibers Subjected to Pre- and Post-Electrospinning Plasma Treatments for Refined Scaffold-Based Nerve Tissue Engineering Applications

Composite biopolymer/conducting polymer scaffolds, such as polylactic acid (PLA)/ polyaniline (PAni) nanofibers, have emerged as popular alternative scaffolds in the electrical-sensitive nerve tissue engineering (TE). Although mimicking the extracellular matrix geometry, such scaffolds are highly hydrophobic and usually present an inhomogeneous morphology with massive beads that impede nerve cell-material interactions. Therefore, the present study launches an exclusive combinatorial strategy merging successive pre- and post-electrospinning plasma treatments to cope with these issues. Firstly, an atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) treatment was applied on PLA and PLA/PAni solutions prior to electrospinning, enhancing their viscosity and conductivity. These liquid property changes largely eliminated the beaded structures on the nanofibers, leading to uniform and nicely elongated fibers having average diameters between 170 and 230 nm. After electrospinning, the conceived scaffolds were subjected to a N₂ dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) treatment, which significantly increased their surface wettability as illustrated by large decreases in water contact angles for values above 125° to values below 25°. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses revealed that 3.3% of nitrogen was implanted on the nanofibers surface in the form of C-N and N-C=O functionalities upon DBD treatment. Finally, after seeding pheochromocytoma (PC-12) cells on the scaffolds, a greatly enhanced cell adhesion and a more dispersive cell distribution were detected on the DBD-treated samples. Interestingly, when the APPJ treatment was additionally performed, the extension of a high number of long neurites was spotted leading to the formation of a neuronal network between PC-12 cell clusters. In addition, the presence of conducting PAni in the scaffolds further promoted the behavior of PC-12 cells as illustrated by more than a 40% increase in the neurite density without any external electrical stimulation. As such, this work presents a new strategy combining different plasma-assisted biofabrication techniques of conducting nanofibers to create promising scaffolds for electrical-sensitive TE applications.

Balanced Coexistence of Reversible and Irreversible Covalent Bonds in a Conductive Triple Polymeric Network Enables Stretchable Hydrogels with High Toughness and Adhesiveness

The application of soft hydrogels to stretchable devices has attracted increasing attention in deformable bioelectronics owing to their unique characteristic, "modulus matching between materials and organs". Despite considerable progress, their low toughness, low conductivity, and absence of tissue adhesiveness remain substantial challenges associated with unstable skin-interfacing, where body movements undesirably disturb electrical signal acquisitions. Herein, we report a material design of a highly tough strain-dissipative and skin-adhesive conducting hydrogel fabricated through a facile one-step sol-gel transition and its application to an interactive human-machine interface. The hydrogel comprises a triple polymeric network where irreversible amide linkage of polyacrylamide with alginate and dynamic covalent bonds entailing conjugated polymer chains of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-co-(3-thienylboronic acid) are simultaneously capable of high stretchability (1300% strain), efficient strain dissipation (36,209 J/m²), low electrical resistance (590 Ω), and even robust skin adhesiveness (35.0 ± 5.6 kPa). Based on such decent characteristics, the hydrogel was utilized as a multifunctional layer for successfully performing either electrophysiological cardiac/muscular on-skin sensors or an interactive stretchable human-machine interface.

A high-pressure resistant ternary network hydrogel based flexible strain sensor with a uniaxially oriented porous structure toward gait detection

Gait abnormalities have been widely investigated in the diagnosis and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. However, it is still a great challenge to achieve a comfortable, convenient, sensitive and high-pressure resistant flexible gait detection sensor for real-time health monitoring. In this work, a polyaniline (PANI)@(polyacrylic acid (PAA)-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)) (PANI@(PVA-PAA)) ternary network hydrogel with a uniaxially oriented porous featured structure was successfully prepared using a simple freeze-thaw method and in situ polymerization. The PANI@(PVA-PAA) hydrogel shows excellent compressive mechanical properties (423.44 kPa), favorable conductivity (2.02 S m^-1) and remarkable durability (500 loading-unloading cycle), and can sensitively detect the effect of pressure with a fast response time (200 ms). The PANI@(PVA-PAA) hydrogel assembled into a flexible sensor can effectively identify the movement state of the shoulder, knee and even the sole of the plantar for gait detection. The uniaxially oriented porous structure enables the hydrogel-based sensor to have a high rate of change in the longitudinal direction and can effectively distinguish various gaits. The construction of a hydrogen bond between PANI and the PVA-PAA hydrogel ensures the uniform distribution of PANI in the hydrogel to form a ternary network structure, which improves the pressure resistance and conductivity of the PANI@(PVA-PAA) hydrogel. Thus, PANI@(PVA-PAA) hydrogel flexible sensor for gait detection can not only effectively monitor some serious diseases but also detect some unscientific exercise in people's daily life.

Nanomaterials supported by polymers for tissue engineering applications: A review

In the biomedical sciences, particularly in wound healing, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine, the development of natural-based biomaterials as a carrier has revealed a wide range of advantages. Tissue engineering is one of the therapeutic approaches used to replace damaged tissue. Polymers have received a lot of attention for their beneficial interactions with cells, but they have some drawbacks, such as poor mechanical properties. Due to their relatively large surface area, nanoparticles can cause significant changes in polymers and improve their mechanical properties. The nanoparticles incorporated into biomaterial scaffolds have been associated with positive effects on cell adhesion, viability, proliferation, and migration in the majority of studies. This review paper discusses recent applications of polymer-nanoparticle composites in the development of tissue engineering scaffolds, as well as the effects of these nanomaterials in the fields of cardiovascular, neural, bone, and skin tissue engineering.

Advanced Multifunctional Wound Dressing Hydrogels as Drug Carriers

Skin injuries, especially chronic wounds, remain a significant healthcare system problem. The number of burns, diabetic patients, pressure ulcers, and other damages is also growing, particularly in elderly populations. Several investigations are pursued in designing more effective therapeutics for treating different wound injuries. These efforts have resulted in developing multifunctional wound dressings to improve wound repair. For this, preparing multifunctional dressings using various methods has provided a new attitude to support effective skin regeneration. This review focuses on the recent developments in designing multifunctional hydrogel dressings with hemostasis, adhesiveness, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties.

Emerging Applications of Versatile Polyaniline-Based Polymers in the Food Industry

Intrinsically conducting polymers (ICPs) have been widely studied in various applications, such as sensors, tissue engineering, drug delivery, and semiconductors. Specifically, polyaniline (PANI) stands out in food industry applications due to its advantageous reversible redox properties, electrical conductivity, and simple modification. The rising concerns about food safety and security have encouraged the development of PANI as an antioxidant, antimicrobial agent, food freshness indicator, and electronic nose. At the same time, it plays an important role in food safety control to ensure the quality of food. This study reviews the emerging applications of PANI in the food industry. It has been found that the versatile applications of PANI allow the advancement of modern active and intelligent food packaging and better food quality monitoring systems.

Recent Advances in Graphene-Based Nanocomposites for Ammonia Detection

The increasing demand to mitigate the alarming effects of the emission of ammonia (NH3) on human health and the environment has highlighted the growing attention to the design of reliable and effective sensing technologies using novel materials and unique nanocomposites with tunable functionalities. Among the state-of-the-art ammonia detection materials, graphene-based polymeric nanocomposites have gained significant attention. Despite the ever-increasing number of publications on graphene-based polymeric nanocomposites for ammonia detection, various understandings and information regarding the process, mechanisms, and new material components have not been fully explored. Therefore, this review summarises the recent progress of graphene-based polymeric nanocomposites for ammonia detection. A comprehensive discussion is provided on the various gas sensor designs, including chemiresistive, Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM), and Field-Effect Transistor (FET), as well as gas sensors utilising the graphene-based polymer nanocomposites, in addition to highlighting the pros and cons of graphene to enhance the performance of gas sensors. Moreover, the various techniques used to fabricate graphene-based nanocomposites and the numerous polymer electrolytes (e.g., conductive polymeric electrolytes), the ion transport models, and the fabrication and detection mechanisms of ammonia are critically addressed. Finally, a brief outlook on the significant progress, future opportunities, and challenges of graphene-based polymer nanocomposites for the application of ammonia detection are presented.

Nanofiber Based on Electrically Conductive Materials for Biosensor Applications

Biosensors are analytical tools that enable the transmission of different signals produced from the target analyte to a transducer for the production of real-time clinical diagnostic devices by obtaining meaningful results. Recent research demonstrates that the production of structured nanofiber through various methods has come to light as a potential platform for enhancing the functionality of biosensing devices. The general trend is towards the use of nanofibers for electrochemical biosensors. However, optical and mechanical biosensors are being developed by functionalization of nanofibers. Such nanofibers exhibit a high surface area to volume ratio, surface porosity, electroconductivity and variable morphology. In addition, nanosized structures have shown to be effective as membranes for immobilizing bioanalytes, offering physiologically active molecules a favorable microenvironment that improves the efficiency of biosensing. Cost effective, wearable biosensors are crucial for point of care diagnostics. This review aims to examine the electrically conductive materials, potential forming methods, and wide-ranging applications of nanofiber-based biosensing platforms, with an emphasis on transducers incorporating mechanical, electrochemical and optical and bioreceptors involving cancer biomarker, urea, DNA, microorganisms, primarily in the last decade. The appealing properties of nanofibers mats and the attributes of the biorecognition components are also stated and explored. Finally, consideration is given to the difficulties now affecting the design of nanofiber-based biosensing platforms as well as their future potential.

Natural Glycyrrhizic Acid-Tailored Homogeneous Conductive Polyaniline Hydrogel as a Flexible Strain Sensor

Polyaniline (PANi) hydrogels often exhibit highly mechanical and electrochemical properties, which have received extensive attention in the fields of batteries, supercapacitors, and sensors. However, the shortcomings such as hydrophobicity and easy aggregation of PANi frequently result in deterioration of mechanical and electrochemical performance of PANi hydrogels. Here, a bifunctional natural product, glycyrrhizic acid (GL), is utilized to prepare the homogeneous conductive PANi hydrogel, because GL not only can assemble into supramolecular hydrogel as the biocompatible matrix but also can salinize aniline monomers to facilitate the polymerization in situ to form uniformly dispersed PANi within GL matrix. Accordingly, the resulting GL/PANi hydrogel shows the Tyndall effect caused by the nanoclusters entangled by nanofibers and exhibits an improved storage modulus G' (3.2 kPa) and loss modulus G″ (0.9 kPa), as well as the expected conductivity (0.17 S·m^-1). In addition, the GL/PANi hydrogel is further reinforced by blending poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) for the required strength and stretchability as a flexible strain sensor. The results reveal that the obtained PVA/GL/PANi hydrogel has a fracture stress of 693 kPa at an elongation of 329%, with a fracture toughness of 82 MJ·m^-3 and Young's modulus of 47.9 kPa. Its gauge factor (GF) is measured to be 2.5 at lower strain (<130%) and up to 4.3 at larger strain (>130%). This good sensitivity and sensing stability make the PVA/GL/PANi hydrogel effectively monitor relevant human motion detections. Our work provides an innovative strategy to manufacture the homogeneous conductive PANi hydrogel for high-performance soft electronic devices.

Silk Fibroin-g-Polyaniline Platform for the Design of Biocompatible-Electroactive Substrate

The structural modification of biopolymers is a current strategy to develop materials with biomedical applications. Silk fibroin is a natural fiber derived from a protein produced by the silkworm (Bombyx mori) with biocompatible characteristics and excellent mechanical properties. This research reports the structural modification of silk fibroin by incorporating polyaniline chain grafts through a one-pot process (esterification reaction/oxidative polymerization). The structural characterization was achieved by ¹H-NMR and FT-IR. The morphology was studied by scanning electron microscopy and complemented with thermogravimetric analysis to understand the effect of the thermal stability at each step of the modification. Different fibroin silk (Fib): polyaniline (PAni) mass ratios were evaluated. From this evaluation, it was found that a Fib to PAni ratio of at least 1 to 0.5 is required to produce electroactive polyaniline, as observed by UV-vis and CV. Notably, all the fibroin-g-PAni systems present low cytotoxicity, making them promising systems for developing biocompatible electrochemical sensors.
