Iodine in Metal–Organic Frameworks at High Pressure

Direct Observation of Enhanced Iodine Binding within a Series of Functionalized Metal-Organic Frameworks with Exceptional Irradiation Stability

Optimization of active sites and stability under irradiation are important targets for sorbent materials that might be used for iodine (I2) storage. Herein, we report the direct observation of I2 binding in a series of Cu(II)-based isostructural metal-organic frameworks, MFM-170, MFM-172, MFM-174, NJU-Bai20, and NJU-Bai21, incorporating various functional groups (-H, -CH3, - NH2, -C≡C-, and -CONH-, respectively). MFM-170 shows a reversible uptake of 3.37 g g-1 and a high packing density of 4.41 g cm-3 for physiosorbed I2. The incorporation of -NH2 and -C≡C- moieties in MFM-174 and NJU-Bai20, respectively, enhances the binding of I2, affording uptakes of up to 3.91 g g-1. In addition, an exceptional I2 packing density of 4.83 g cm-3 is achieved in MFM-174, comparable to that of solid iodine (4.93 g cm-3). In situ crystallographic studies show the formation of a range of supramolecular and chemical interactions [I···N, I···H2N] and [I···C≡C, I-C═C-I] between -NH2, -C≡C- sites, respectively, and adsorbed I2 molecules. These observations have been confirmed via a combination of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray photoelectron, and Raman spectroscopies. Importantly, γ-irradiation confirmed the ultraresistance of MFM-170, MFM-174, and NJU-Bai20 suggesting their potential as efficient sorbents for cleanup of radioactive waste.

Stability of Iodine Species Trapped in Titanium-Based MOFs: MIL-125 and MIL-125_NH2

Two titanium-based MOFs MIL-125 and MIL-125_NH2 are synthesized and characterized using high-temperature powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), N2 sorption, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Stable up to 300 °C, both compounds exhibited similar specific surface areas (SSA) values (1207 and 1099 m2 g-1 for MIL-125 and MIL-125_NH2, respectively). EPR signals of Ti3+ are observed in both, whith MIL-125_NH2 also showing ─NH2 ●+ signatures. Both MOFs efficiently adsorbed iodine in continuous gas flow over five days, with MIL-125 trapping 1.9 g.g-1 and MIL-125_NH2 trapping 1.6 g.g-1. MIL-125_NH2 exhibited faster adsorption kinetics due to its smaller band gap (2.5 against 3.6 eV). In situ Raman spectroscopy conducted during iodine adsorption revealed signal evolution from "free" I2 to "perturbed" I2, and I3 -. TGA and in situ Raman desorption experiments showed that ─NH2 groups improved the stabilization of I3 - due to an electrostatic interaction with NH2 ●+BDC radicals. The Albery model indicated longer lifetimes for iodine desorption in I2@MIL-125_NH2, attributed to a rate-limiting step due to stronger interaction between the anionic iodine species and the ─NH2 ●+ radicals. This study underscores how MOFs with efficient charge separation and hole-stabilizer functional groups enhance iodine stability at higher temperatures.

Pressure stabilization effect on the donor-acceptor polyiodide chains in tetraethylammonium bis(diiodine) triiodide - insights from Raman spectroscopy

Polyiodides present high bonding flexibility already at ambient conditions, and undergo significant pressure-induced structural deformations. Resonant Raman spectroscopy has been widely used to study I-I bonds in various polyiodides, but it carries a risk of photodecomposition due to the high visible-light absorption of iodine. In this study, tetraethylammonium (bis)diiodine triiodide (TEAI) has been investigated by resonant Raman spectroscopy up to 12.02(3) GPa. The effect of pressure on the intensities and positions of Raman bands has been evaluated and correlated with the interatomic I-I distances derived from high-pressure X-ray diffraction experiments. Pressure was shown to effectively stabilize TEAI against laser-induced photodecomposition, even after a long course of irradiation with the resonant laser light. Examination of a freshly exposed crystal surface revealed that TEAI superficially passivates with the layer of lower polyiodides, which prevents further iodine loss, and shows distinct pressure-induced behaviour.

Electron-Donor Functional Groups, Band Gap Tailoring, and Efficient Charge Separation: Three Keys To Improve the Gaseous Iodine Uptake in MOF Materials

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been largely investigated worldwide for their use in the capture of radioactive iodine due to its potential release during nuclear accident events and reprocessing of nuclear fuel. The present work deals with the capture of gaseous I₂ under a continuous flow and its subsequent transformation into I₃^- within the porous structures of three distinct, yet structurally related, terephthalate-based MOFs: MIL-125(Ti), MIL-125(Ti)_NH₂, and CAU-1(Al)_NH₂. The synthesized materials exhibited specific surface areas (SSAs) with similar order of magnitude: 1207, 1099, and 1110 m² g^-1 for MIL-125(Ti), MIL-125(Ti)_NH₂, and CAU-1(Al)_NH₂, respectively. Because of that, it was possible to evaluate the influence of other variables over the iodine uptake capacity─such as band gap energies, functional groups, and charge transfer complexes (CTC). After 72 h of contact with the I₂ gas flow, MIL-125(Ti)_NH₂ was able to trap 11.0 mol mol^-1 of I₂, followed by MIL-125(Ti) (8.7 mol mol^-1), and by CAU-1(Al)_NH₂ (4.2 mol mol^-1). The enhanced ability to retain I₂ in the MIL-125(Ti)_NH₂ was associated with a combined effect between its amino group (which has a great affinity toward iodine), its smaller band gap (2.5 eV against 2.6 and 3.8 eV for CAU-1(Al)_NH₂ and MIL-125(Ti), respectively), and its efficient charge separation. In fact, the presence of a linker-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) mechanism in MIL-125(Ti) compounds separates the photogenerated electrons and holes into the two distinct moieties of the MOF: the organic linker (which stabilizes the holes) and the oxy/hydroxy inorganic cluster (which stabilizes the electrons). This effect was observed using EPR spectroscopy, whereas the reduction of the Ti⁴⁺ cations into the paramagnetic Ti³⁺ species was evidenced after irradiation of the pristine Ti-based MOFs with UV light (<420 nm). In contrast, because CAU-1(Al)_NH₂ exhibits a purely linker-based transition (LBT)─with no EPR signals related to Al paramagnetic species─it tends to exhibit faster recombination of the photogenerated charge carriers as, in this case, both electrons and holes are located over the organic linker. Furthermore, the transformation of the gaseous I₂ into I_n^- [n = 5, 7, 9, ...] intermediates and then into I₃^- species was evaluated using Raman spectroscopy by following the evolution of their respective bands at about 198, 180, and 113 cm^-1. This conversion─which is favored by an effective charge separation and smaller band gaps─increases the I₂ uptake capacity of the compounds by creating specific adsorption sites for these anionic species. In fact, because the -NH₂ groups act as an antenna to stabilize the photogenerated holes, both I_n^- and I₃^- are adsorbed into the organic linker via an electrostatic interaction with these positively charged entities. Finally, changes regarding the EPR spectra before and after the iodine loading were considered to propose a mechanism for the electron transfer from the MOFs structure to the I₂ molecules considering their different characteristics.

Iodine Uptake by Zr-/Hf-Based UiO-66 Materials: The Influence of Metal Substitution on Iodine Evolution

Many works reported the encapsulation of iodine in metal-organic frameworks as well as the I₂ → I₃^- chemical conversion. This transformation has been examined by adsorbing gaseous iodine on a series of UiO-66 materials and the different Hf/Zr metal ratios (0-100% Hf) were evaluated during the evolution of I₂ into I₃^-. The influence of the hafnium content on the UiO-66 structure was highlighted by PXRD, SEM images, and gas sorption tests. The UiO-66(Hf) presented smaller lattice parameter (a = 20.7232 Å), higher crystallite size (0.18 ≤ Φ ≤ 3.33 μm), and smaller SSA_BET (818 m²·g^-1) when compared to its parent UiO-66(Zr) ─ a = 20.7696 Å, 100 ≤ Φ ≤ 250 nm, and SSA_BET = 1262 m²·g^-1. The effect of replacing Zr atoms by Hf in the physical properties of the UiO-66 was deeply evaluated by a spectroscopic study using UV-vis, FTIR, and Raman characterizations. In this case, the Hf presence reduced the band gap of the UiO-66, from 4.07 eV in UiO-66(Zr) to 3.98 eV in UiO-66(Hf). Furthermore, the UiO-66(Hf) showed a blue shift for several FTIR and Raman bands, indicating a stiffening on the implied interatomic bonds when comparing to UiO-66(Zr) spectra. Hafnium was found to clearly favor the capture of iodine [285 g·mol^-1, against 230 g·mol^-1 for UiO-66(Zr)] and the kinetic evolution of I₂ into I₃^- after 16 h of I₂ filtration. Three iodine species were typically identified by Raman spectroscopy and chemometric analysis. These species are as follows: "free" I₂ (206 cm^-1), "perturbed" I₂ (173 cm^-1), and I₃^- (115 and 141 cm^-1). It was also verified, by FTIR spectroscopy, that the oxo and hydroxyl groups of the inorganic [M₆O₄(OH)₄] (M = Zr, Hf) cluster were perturbed after the adsorption of I₂ into UiO-66(Hf), which was ascribed to the higher acid character of Hf. Finally, with that in mind and considering that the EPR results discard the possibility of a redox phenomenon involving the tetravalent cations (Hf⁴⁺ or Zr⁴⁺), a mechanism was proposed for the conversion of I₂ into I₃^- in UiO-66─based on an electron donor-acceptor complex between the aromatic ring of the BDC linker and the I₂ molecule.

Capture of Gaseous Iodine in Isoreticular Zirconium-Based UiO-n Metal-Organic Frameworks: Influence of Amino Functionalization, DFT Calculations, Raman and EPR Spectroscopic Investigation

A series of Zr-based UiO-n MOF materials (n=66, 67, 68) have been studied for iodine capture. Gaseous iodine adsorption was collected kinetically from a home-made set-up allowing the continuous measurement of iodine content trapped within UiO-n compounds, with organic functionalities (-H, -CH₃ , -Cl, -Br, -(OH)₂ , -NO₂ , -NH₂ , (-NH₂ )₂ , -CH₂ NH₂ ) by in-situ UV-Vis spectroscopy. This study emphasizes the role of the amino groups attached to the aromatic rings of the ligands connecting the {Zr₆ O₄ (OH)₄ } brick. In particular, the preferential interaction of iodine with lone-pair groups, such as amino functions, has been experimentally observed and is also based on DFT calculations. Indeed, higher iodine contents were systematically measured for amino-functionalized UiO-66 or UiO-67, compared to the pristine material (up to 1211 mg/g for UiO-67-(NH₂ )₂ ). However, DFT calculations revealed the highest computed interaction energies for alkylamine groups (-CH₂ NH₂ ) in UiO-67 (-128.5 kJ/mol for the octahedral cavity), and pointed out the influence of this specific functionality compared with that of an aromatic amine. The encapsulation of iodine within the pore system of UiO-n materials and their amino-derivatives has been analyzed by UV-Vis and Raman spectroscopy. We showed that a systematic conversion of molecular iodine (I₂ ) species into anionic I^- ones, stabilized as I^- ⋅⋅⋅I₂ or I₃ ^- complexes within the MOF cavities, occurs when I₂ @UiO-n samples are left in ambient light.

High-pressure transformation of dithiazolylidene-dithiazolium polyiodide with N-H…N hydrogen bond: A Raman Spectroscopy study

The insight into the behavior of polyiodides under non-ambient conditions can enrich the practical applications due to obtaining materials with adjustable and tunable conducting properties. In this work Raman spectroscopy study in the range 0 - 6.5 GPa has been performed for dithiazolylidene-dithiazolium zigzag polyiodide with N-H…N hydrogen bond. Variations of band positions in the low-wavenumber region of Raman spectra have been attributed to the changes in the anionic part of the unit cell. The association of different interacting polyiodide subunits at pressure above 1.5 GPa leads to the emergence of the bands at 98 and 115 cm^-1 due to consistent vibrations in the I₈^2- zigzag. The emergence of the band at 159 cm^-1 above 0.28 GPa can be assigned to N-H…N hydrogen bond vibration. The obtained results depict undergoing structure transformations: the stronger are cation…cation and anion…anion interactions the more likely is the observation of conducting properties due to the formation of polyiodide zigzag and strongly-bound hydrogen-bonded fragment.

Molecular self-assembly of 1D infinite polyiodide helices in a phenanthrolinium salt

A new linear polymeric polyiodide, catena-poly[tris(1,10-phenanthrolin-1-ium)tris(1,10-phenanthroline)heptaiodide], was prepared by one-step synthesis. Its formation is driven by hydrogen-bond assisted supramolecular assembly in the presence of chromium(iii) acetate. Its structure has been characterized by the means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction. To date, this is only one of the few examples of organized linear infinite polyiodides with a known structure. The interplay between the interactions within the hypervalent iodine chain and its supramolecular environment is elucidated. The electrical, thermal, and spectroscopic properties of the studied compound were investigated and associated with the structural features. The infinite character of the polyiodide chain and its similarity to the blue starch-iodine complex has been additionally confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. Despite the apparent structural and spectroscopic similarities with the previously reported 1D polymeric polyiodide, its physical properties, i.e. electrical conductivity and thermal stability, differ significantly. This can be rationalized by the differences in the orbital overlap within the iodine chain, as well as the distinct interactions with the cation.

Low-sintering-temperature borosilicate glass to immobilize silver-coated silica-gel with different iodine loadings

To better deal with the radioactive iodine generated during the development of nuclear energy, B₂O₃, Bi₂O₃, ZnO, and SiO₂ were used to sinter borosilicate glass for the immobilization of iodine. The effect of B₂O₃ on glass formation was discussed by changing the molar ratio of B₂O₃ in the matrix. When B₂O₃ content is 50 mol% and sintering temperature is 600 ℃, the amorphous degree of quaternary glass is the highest. The sintered body with the highest degree of amorphous was selected to study radioactive iodine. Then, the effects of different iodine loading concentrations for sintering borosilicate glass in terms of microstructure and phase change were discussed. With the increase in iodine content on silica-gel, the degree of amorphous of the specimens presented a decreasing trend, and there are obvious SiO₂ peaks. When the content was 20 wt.%-30 wt.%, a large number of new phases were generated. When the iodine content is 20 wt.%, in addition to the enrichment of Si and O elements, the elemental distribution for B, Bi, Zn, I, and Ag was even. TEM results also showed that there was a crystalline phase in the sinter.

Peculiar High-Pressure Phase Behavior of 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium Iodide

We investigated the stability of the liquid phase of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide (hereafter abbreviated as [C₄mim][I]) up to 16.7 GPa at room temperature. We observed a peculiar phase transition behavior in the [C₄mim][I] sample. In particular, a glassy state was formed at ∼1.3 GPa; however, the reddish-brown precipitate was formed probably due to concentrated I₃^- or I₂^- species that were formed above 12 GPa; [C₄mim][I] showed a pressure-induced partial crystallization from the glassy state. We concluded that the conformation of [C₄mim]⁺ is essential in iterative modulation to control the environmental formation of iodide precipitate.

From IR to x-rays: gaining molecular level insights on metal-organic frameworks through spectroscopy

This topical review focuses on the application of several types of spectroscopy methods to a class of solid state materials called metal organic frameworks (MOFs). MOFs are self-assembled, porous crystalline materials composed of metal cluster nodes linked through coordination bonds with organic or organometallic molecular constituents. Their unique host-guest properties make them attractive for many adsorption-based applications such as gas storage and separation, catalysis, sensing and others. While much research focuses on the development and application of these materials, fundamental studies of MOF properties and molecular level host-guest interactions behind their functionality have become a significant research direction on its own. Spectroscopy methods are now ubiquitous tools in this pursuit. This review focuses on the application of three classes of spectroscopy methods to MOF materials: vibrational, optical electronic and x-ray spectroscopies. Following brief introductions to each method that include pertinent theory and experimental considerations, we present a broad overview of the types of MOF systems that have been studied, with specific examples and important new molecular level insights highlighted along the way. The current status of spectroscopic studies of MOFs is presented at the end along with some perspectives on the future directions in this area of research.

Visualization of Iodine Chemisorption Facilitated by Aryl C-H Bond Activation

The ability to chemisorb iodine is important for the safe long-term storage of fission products from nuclear reactors. Herein, we successfully used single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis to crystallographically visualize I₂ binding sites in two isostructural metal-organic frameworks, viz. Co₂(m-DOBDC) (m-DOBDC^4- = 4,6-dioxo-1,3-benzenedicarboxylate) and Co₂(p-DOBDC) (p-DOBDC^4- = 2,5-dioxo-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate), with increasing I₂ loading. Interestingly, the C-H bond at the electron-rich carbon (C5) of m-DOBDC^4- is activated toward electrophilic aromatic substitution, forming an aryl C-I bond and I^- or I₃^- that coordinates to unsaturated open Co sites. Cooperation between the ligand and the open Co sites leads to rapid chemisorption of I₂ even under mild adsorption conditions, such as room temperature. In contrast, molecular I₂ coordinates to the open Co sites of Co₂(p-DOBDC). Owing to the chemisorption of I₂, I₂@Co₂(m-DOBDC) decomposes at a much higher temperature than I₂@Co₂(p-DOBDC), as revealed by thermogravimetric analysis.
