Two-Component Fluorescent-Semiconducting Hydrogel from Naphthalene Diimide-Appended Peptide with Long-Chain Amines: Variation in Thermal and Mechanical Strengths of Gels

Understanding multicomponent low molecular weight gels from gelators to networks

BACKGROUND

The construction of gels from low molecular weight gelators (LMWG) has been extensively studied in the fields of bio-nanotechnology and other fields. However, the understanding gaps still prevent the prediction of LMWG from the full design of those gel systems. Gels with multicomponent become even more complicated because of the multiple interference effects coexist in the composite gel systems.

AIM OF REVIEW

This review emphasizes systems view on the understanding of multicomponent low molecular weight gels (MLMWGs), and summarizes recent progress on the construction of desired networks of MLMWGs, including self-sorting and co-assembly, as well as the challenges and approaches to understanding MLMWGs, with the hope that the opportunities from natural products and peptides can speed up the understanding process and close the gaps between the design and prediction of structures.

KEY SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS OF REVIEW

This review is focused on three key concepts. Firstly, understanding the complicated multicomponent gels systems requires a systems perspective on MLMWGs. Secondly, several protocols can be applied to control self-sorting and co-assembly behaviors in those multicomponent gels system, including the certain complementary structures, chirality inducing and dynamic control. Thirdly, the discussion is anchored in challenges and strategies of understanding MLMWGs, and some examples are provided for the understanding of multicomponent gels constructed from small natural products and subtle designed short peptides.

Alkaline cations dramatically control molecular hydrogelation by an amino acid-derived anionic amphiphile

Understanding the factors that control the formation of (supra)molecular hydrogels permits a rational tuning of their properties and represents a primary challenge for developing smart biocompatible soft materials. Hydrogel formation by molecular amphiphilic anions at millimolar concentrations is counterintuitive, considering the solubility of these species in water. Here we report hydrogel formation by a simple anionic molecular amphiphile and a rationale for the fibrillisation process observed. The studied molecule, DodValSuc, consists of a 12C alkyl chain, an l-valine unit and a terminal succinic acid moiety. Hydrogelation depends to a large degree on the nature and concentration of the alkaline cations present in the medium (Li⁺, Na⁺ or K⁺). As a result, gelation efficiency and properties like thermal stability or rheology are highly tunable using the alkaline cation present or its concentration as variables. A detailed study is reported, which includes the determination of minimum gelation concentration (MGC) by tabletop rheology, critical micelle concentration (CMC) using pyrene as a fluorescent probe, thermal stability (solubility) by ¹H NMR, the morphology of the fibres by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), crystallinity by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and gel strength by oscillatory rheology. Additionally, dynamic light scattering (DLS) was used to evaluate the size of the micelles and permitted monitoring of the fibrillisation process. Altogether, the results are consistent with the formation of micelles that experience head crystallisation and subsequent aggregation into crystalline fibres. The alkaline cations play a crucial role in providing the cement that glues together the gelator molecules, making their concentration a critical parameter for gelation efficiency and properties. Furthermore, the gelation-promoting effects are inversely correlated with the size of the cations so that the highest thermal stability and rheological strength were found for the hydrogels formed in the presence of Li^+.

Influence of Backbone Regioregularity on the Optoelectronic and Mechanical Response of Conjugated Polyelectrolyte-Based Hydrogels

The ability to form robust, optoelectronically responsive, and mechanically tunable hydrogels using facile processing is desirable for sensing, biomedical, and light-harvesting applications. We demonstrate that such a hydrogel can be formed using aqueous complexation between one conjugated and one nonconjugated polyelectrolyte. We show that the rheological properties of the hydrogel can be tuned using the regioregularity of the conjugated polyelectrolyte (CPE) backbone, leading to significantly different mesoscale gel morphologies. We also find that the exciton dynamics in the long-time limit reflect differences in the underlying electronic connectivity of the hydrogels as a function CPE regioregularity. The influence of excess small ions on the hydrogel structure and the exciton dynamics similarly depends on the regioregularity in a significant way. Finally, electrical impedance measurements lead us to infer that these hydrogels can act as mixed ionic/electronic conductors. We believe that such gels possess an attractive combination of physical-chemical properties that can be leveraged in multiple applications.

Process Dependent Complexity in Multicomponent Gels

Mixing low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) can be used to combine favorable properties of the individual components within a multifunctional gel. Such multicomponent systems are complex enough in themselves but the method of combining components is not commonly considered something to influence self-assembly. Herein, two multicomponent systems comprising of a naphthalene-based dipeptide hydrogelator and one of two modified naphthalene diimides (NDIs), one of which forms gels, and the other does not, are investigated. These systems are probed, examining the structures formed and their gel properties (when preparing a solution from either a mixed powder of both components or by mixing pre-formed solutions of each component) using rheology, small angle neutron scattering (SANS), and absorbance spectroscopy. It is found that by altering the method of preparation, it is can either induce self-sorting or co-assembly within the fibers formed that underpin the gel network.

Photocatalytic performance of heterojunction S-Tyr-NDI-Tyr/TiO2 formed by self-assembled naphthalimide derivatives and titanium dioxide

In this paper, a type of heterojunction photocatalyst S-Tyr-NDI-Tyr/TiO₂ was prepared by self-assembly of tyrosine-substituted naphthamide (NDA) and bonding with titanium dioxide. The self-assembly process and driving force of monomer M-Tyr-NDI-Tyr were simulated by theoretical calculation. Taking atenolol as the target pollutant, the photocatalytic performance of the heterojunction photocatalyst under visible light was studied, and the degradation products were analyzed by mass spectrometry. The environmental toxicity of photocatalytic process was evaluated by luminescent bacteria. The principle of high photocatalytic activity of S-Tyr-NDI-Tyr/TiO₂ heterojunction photocatalyst was proposed by analyzing the fluorescence spectrum, photocurrent density and resistance, electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum, free radical capture experiment and energy band position of S-Tyr-NDI-Tyr/TiO₂ heterojunction photocatalyst. In addition, the photocatalytic degradation of different pollutants by S-Tyr-NDI-Tyr/TiO₂ heterojunction photocatalyst was also studied. This work will provide a useful example for the further development of new and efficient organic supramolecular/inorganic semiconductor composite photocatalysts.

Solvent-Directed Transformation of the Self-assembly and Optical Property of a Peptide-Appended Core-Substituted Naphthelenediimide and Selective Detection of Nitrite Ions in an Aqueous Medium

This study vividly displays the different self-assembling behavior and consequent tuning of the fluorescence property of a peptide-appended core-substituted naphthalenediimide (N1) in the aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents (n-hexane/n-decane/methyl cyclohexane) and in an aqueous medium within micelles. The N1 is highly fluorescent in the monomeric state and self-aggregates in a hydrocarbon solvent, exhibiting "H-type" or "face-to-face" stacking as indicated by a blue shift of absorption maxima in the UV-vis spectrum. In the H-aggregated state, the fluorescence emission of N1 changes to green from the yellow emission obtained in the monomeric state. In the presence of a micelle-forming surfactant, cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), the N1 is found to be dispersed in a water medium. Interestingly, upon encapsulation of N1 into the micelle, the molecule alters its self-assembling pattern and optical property compared to its behavior in the hydrocarbon solvent. The N1 exhibits "edge-to-edge" stacking or J aggregates inside the micelle as indicated by the UV-vis spectroscopic study, which shows a red shift of the absorption maxima compared to that in the monomeric state. The fluorescence emission also differs in the water medium with the NDI derivative exhibiting red emission. FT-IR studies reveal that all amide NHs of N1 are hydrogen-bonded within the micelle (in the J-aggregated state), whereas both non-bonding and hydrogen-bonding amide NHs are present in the H-aggregated state. This is a wonderful example of solvent-mediated transformation of the aggregation pattern (from H to J) and solvatochromism of emission over a wide range from green in the H-aggregated state to yellow in the monomeric state and orangish-red in the J-aggregated state. Moreover, the J aggregate has been successfully utilized for selective and sensitive detection of nitrite ions in water even in the presence of other common anions (NO₃^-, SO₄^2-, HSO₄^-, CO₃^2-, and Cl^-).

Naphthalene diimides: perspectives and promise

In this review, we describe the developments in the field of naphthalene diimides (NDIs) from 2016 to the presentday. NDIs are shown to be an increasingly interesting class of molecules due to their electronic properties, large electron deficient aromatic cores and tendency to self-assemble into functional structures. Almost all NDIs possess high electron affinity, good charge carrier mobility, and excellent thermal and oxidative stability, making them promising candidates for applications in organic electronics, photovoltaic devices, and flexible displays. NDIs have also been extensively studied due to their potential real-world uses across a wide variety of applications including supramolecular chemistry, sensing, host-guest complexes for molecular switching devices, such as catenanes and rotaxanes, ion-channels, catalysis, and medicine and as non-fullerene accepters in solar cells. In recent years, NDI research with respect to supramolecular assemblies and mechanoluminescent properties has also gained considerable traction. Thus, this review will assist a wide range of readers and researchers including chemists, physicists, biologists, medicinal chemists and materials scientists in understanding the scope for development and applicability of NDI dyes in their respective fields through a discussion of the main properties of NDI derivatives and of the status of emerging applications.

Enzyme-Induced Supramolecular Order in Pyrene Dipeptide Hydrogels for the Development of an Efficient Energy-Transfer Template

Peptide self-assembly is gathering much attention due to the precise control it provides for the arrangement of functional moieties for the fabrication of advanced functional materials. It is desirable to use a physical, chemical, or biological trigger that can control the self-assembly process. In the current article, we have applied an enzyme to induce the peptide self-assembly of an aromatic peptide amphiphile, which modulates the supramolecular order in the final gel phase material. We accessed diverse peptide hydrogels from identical gelator concentrations by simply changing the enzyme concentration, which controlled the reaction kinetics and influenced the dynamics of self-assembly. Depending upon the concentration of the enzyme, a bell-shaped relationship was observed in terms of intermolecular interactions, morphology, and properties of the final gel phase material. The access of non-equilibrium structures was further demonstrated by fluorescence emission spectroscopy, circular dichroism spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and rheology. This strategy is applied to construct a charge-transfer hydrogel by doping the donor hydrogel with an acceptor moiety, which exhibits efficient energy transfer. Interestingly, such structural control at the nanoscopic level can further tune the energy-transfer efficiency by simply modulating the enzyme concentration.

Luminescent Behavior of Gels and Sols Comprised of Molecular Gelators

We present a brief review of some important conceptual and practical aspects for the design and properties of molecular luminescent gelators and their gels. Topics considered include structural and dynamic aspects of the gels, including factors important to their ability to emit radiation from electronically excited states.

The pH- and salt-controlled self-assembly of [1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]-benzothiophene–peptide conjugates in supramolecular hydrogels

Salt- and pH-triggered supramolecular hydrogels were obtained from a novel [1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (BTBT)-peptide hybrid.

Free serum sorbitol and its interaction with caffeine: A suggestive approach for plausible remediation of diabetic neuropathy

The measure of sorbitol in serum can act as a good indicator in the monitoring of the diabetic complications. To analyze the sorbitol level in serum medium, fluorometric enzymatic assay was performed. To remove the excess sorbitol from the body, proposed binding of sorbitol with caffeine was investigated. Their interaction in serum medium was studied and established by UV-Vis, fluorescence spectrophotometry, and time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC). The linear calibration of sorbitol (in the range 10-50 mM) was done using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Time scan experiments furnished the reaction rate of sorbitol assayed solution as well as sorbitol-caffeine complex as 0.021 min^-1 and 0.018 min^-1 , respectively. A sudden drop was observed in the fluorescence lifetime of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) present in sorbitol assayed solution upon complexation with caffeine, that is, from 1.774 × 10^-09 to 1.23 × 10^-10 Sec, which indicates the hindrance in the formation of NADH and the probable formation of some other species. Isothermal titration calorimetric experiments clearly indicate the number of binding sites (i.e., 3.89, 1.40, and 2.07) that exist between sorbitol and caffeine at the complexation ratio of 1:1.2, 1:1.5, and 1:3. The present method can be helpful in pharmacological and therapeutic studies of sorbitol using caffeine for treating diabetic neuropathy.

Stimulus-responsive luminescent hydrogels: Design and applications

Luminescent hydrogels are emerging soft materials with applications in photoelectric, biomedicine, sensors and actuators, which are fabricated via covalently conjugation of luminophors to hydrogelators or physical loading of luminescent organic/inorganic materials into hydrogel matrices. Due to the intrinsic stimulus-responsiveness for hydrogels such as thermo-, pH, ionic strength, light and redox, luminescent hydrogels could respond to external physical or chemical stimuli through varying the luminescent properties such as colors, fluorescent intensity and so on, affording diverse application potential in addition to the pristine individual hydrogels or luminescent materials. Based on the rapid development of such area, here we systematically summarize and discuss the design protocols, properties as well as the applications of stimulus-responsive luminescent hydrogels. Because of the stimuli-responsiveness, biocompatibility, injectable and controllability of luminescent hydrogels, they are widely used as functional smart materials. We illustrate the applications of luminescent hydrogels. The future developments about luminescent hydrogels are also presented.

The aging effect on the enhancement of thermal stability, mechanical stiffness and fluorescence properties of histidine-appended naphthalenediimide based two-component hydrogels

A histidine attached naphthalenediimide (NDI)-containing amphiphilic molecule (NDIP) self-assembles into nanotubes in aqueous solution at pH 6.6 as revealed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy studies. This histidine-appended NDI forms a two-component hydrogel in the presence of tartaric acid at a molar ratio of 1 : 2. A morphological transformation was observed from a nanotube structure in the non-gel aggregated state of histidine appended NDI to interconnected cross-linked nanofibers of the two-component hydrogel in the presence of tartaric acid. Interestingly, the gel exhibits an unusual behavior upon aging compared to the fresh gel. It is found that the thermal stability and gel stiffness increase very significantly upon aging. Another important feature noted is that the very weak fluorescence of the fresh gel is transformed into bright greenish fluorescence upon aging. These results suggest that intermolecular interactions among the gelator molecules and tartaric acid in the gel phase slowly increase with time to form a mechanically very stiff and thermally robust gel.

A Self-Assembled Peptide-Appended Naphthalene Diimide: A Fluorescent Switch for Sensing Acid and Base Vapors

A histidine-containing bola-amphiphilic molecule (NDIP) containing a peptide-appended naphthalenediimide (NDI) forms fluorescent hydrogels in phosphate buffer and organogels with benzenoid solvents. These gels were characterized by several spectroscopic and microscopic techniques including FT-IR, HR-TEM, powder X-ray diffraction and small-angle X-ray scattering, UV-Vis and fluorescence studies. The gelator molecule exhibits no significant fluorescence in the xerogel state, while it shows a significant fluorescence (bright cyan) in the presence of volatile organic/inorganic acid vapors; this cyan color vanishes in presence of base (ammonia vapors). A reusable paper-strip-based method based on this self-assembled fluorescent material can be used to easily detect hazardous volatile acid and base vapors with the naked eye.

A review on recent advances in polymer and peptide hydrogels

In this review, we focus on the very recent developments on the use of the stimuli responsive properties of polymer hydrogels for targeted drug delivery, tissue engineering, and biosensing utilizing their different optoelectronic properties. Besides, the stimuli-responsive hydrogels, the conducting polymer hydrogels are discussed, with specific attention to the energy generation and storage behavior of the xerogel derived from the hydrogel. The electronic and ionic conducting gels have been discussed that have applications in various electronic devices, e.g., organic field effect transistors, soft robotics, ionic skins, and sensors. The properties of polymer hybrid gels containing carbon nanomaterials have been exemplified here giving attention to applications in supercapacitors, dye sensitized solar cells, photocurrent switching, etc. Recent trends in the properties and applications of some natural polymer gels to produce thermal and acoustic insulating materials, drug delivery vehicles, self-healing material, tissue engineering, etc., are discussed. Besides the polymer gels, peptide gels of different dipeptides, tripeptides, oligopeptides, polypeptides, cyclic peptides, etc., are discussed, giving attention mainly to biosensing, bioimaging, and drug delivery applications. The properties of peptide-based hybrid hydrogels with polymers, nanoparticles, nucleotides, fullerene, etc., are discussed, giving specific attention to drug delivery, cell culture, bio-sensing, and bioimaging properties. Thus, the present review delineates, in short, the preparation, properties, and applications of different polymer and peptide hydrogels prepared in the past few years.

Photoresponsive Zn2+-specific metallohydrogels coassembled from imidazole containing phenylalanine and arylazopyrazole derivatives

Stimuli-responsive supramolecular gels and metallogels have been widely explored in the past decade, but the fabrication of metallogels with reversible photoresponsive properties remains largely unexplored.

Assembly of amino acid containing naphthalene diimide-based molecules: the role of intervening amide groups in self-assembly, gelation, optical and semiconducting properties

Two naphthalene diimide containing molecules, one with a covalently linked peptide (P1) and the other with a covalently attached amino acid residue and a diamine moiety (P2), have been chosen in such a way that the number of intervening amide groups and the centrally located imide moieties are the same, and their molecular formulae are also identical. However, the positions of the amide groups are different in these two molecules and this can dictate a different behaviour in molecular assembly and gelation processes for each of the individual NDI-appended peptide (P1) and pseudo-peptide (P2). The molecule P1 with an attached peptide moiety and the intervening -CO-NH groups forms an organogel in a mixture of chloroform-methylcyclohexane at a very rapid rate and the mechanical strength of the gel is quite high, whereas the molecule P2, containing the amino acid and diamide moieties, and with the intervening -NH-CO groups forms an organogel in a relatively much slower rate in chloroform-methylcyclohexane mixture. The mechanical strength of the P2 gel is significantly lower compared to that of the P1 gel at the same concentration and solvent system. The minimum gelation concentration of P1 is much smaller than that of P2 in the same solvent system. The thermal stability of the P1 gel is higher than that of the P2 gel at the same concentration and solvent system. However, both of these gels form J-type aggregates in a mixture of chloroform-methylcyclohexane with a red shift in the UV-vis spectrum. The gelator P1 exhibits enhanced fluorescence compared to that of P2 at a fixed concentration and in the same solvent system (mixture of chloroform-methylcyclohexane, 5 : 95 (v/v)). The lifetime and quantum yield of the P1 gel are also significantly higher than those of the P2 gel under similar gelation conditions. Moreover, both P1 and P2 are found to exhibit significant semiconducting behaviours in their dried/xerogel states. It is important to note that the stronger gel P1 exhibits relatively better semiconducting behaviour than the weak gel P2. Interestingly, the self-assembly, gelation, photoluminescence and electrical conductivity are different for the gels obtained from these two molecules. This indicates the role of the amide bond and its linkage (whether -CONH/-NHCO) in the self-assembly, gelation and optoelectronic behaviour of these molecules in their assembled states.

Harnessing Brightness in Naphthalene Diimides

The development of brightly emissive compounds is of great research and commercial interest, with established and emerging applications across chemistry, biology, physics, medicine and engineering. Among the many types of molecules available, naphthalene diimides have been widely used for both fundamental photophysical studies and in practical applications that utilise fluorescence as an information readout. The monomeric naphthalene diimide is weakly fluorescent, however through various methods of core-derivatisation, it can be developed to be highly fluorescent and further functionalised to add utility. In this review, we highlight recent advances made in naphthalene diimide chemistry that have led to development of molecules with improved optical properties, and the design strategies utilised to produce bright fluorescence emission as small molecules or in supramolecular architectures.

Smart Materials for Environmental Remediation Based on Two-Component Gels: Room-Temperature-Phase-Selective Gelation for the Removal of Organic Pollutants Including Nitrobenzene/O-Dichlorobenzene, and Dye Molecules from the Wastewater

Novel two-component gel systems based on aliphatic acid-hydroxy/base interaction were developed as smart materials for environmental remediation. The G1-A16 gelator could be used directly as a powder form to selectively gel aromatic solvents (nitrobenzene and o-dichlorobenzene) from their mixtures with wastewater (containing 0.5 M sodium nitrate and 0.5 M sodium sulfate) via a simple shaking strategy at room temperature without employing co-solvents and a heating-cooling process. Meanwhile, the two-component gel system can efficiently remove the toxic dyes from the aqueous solution. The dominant factors that drive gelation in the case of the gelator and nitrobenzene or water have been studied using FT-IR, 1H NMR, and XRD. Overall, our research provides an efficient two-component approach for facilely tuning the properties of one-component gel for the realization of high-performance functionalities of gels. At the same time, our study demonstrates potential industrial application prospect in removing pollutants efficiently (such as aromatic solvents and toxic dye removal).

Multicomponent peptide assemblies

Self-assembled peptide nanostructures have been increasingly exploited as functional materials for applications in biomedicine and energy. The emergent properties of these nanomaterials determine the applications for which they can be exploited. It has recently been appreciated that nanomaterials composed of multicomponent coassembled peptides often display unique emergent properties that have the potential to dramatically expand the functional utility of peptide-based materials. This review presents recent efforts in the development of multicomponent peptide assemblies. The discussion includes multicomponent assemblies derived from short low molecular weight peptides, peptide amphiphiles, coiled coil peptides, collagen, and β-sheet peptides. The design, structure, emergent properties, and applications for these multicomponent assemblies are presented in order to illustrate the potential of these formulations as sophisticated next-generation bio-inspired materials.

A temperature-responsive supramolecular hydrogel: preparation, gel-gel transition and molecular aggregation

In this study, a novel supramolecular hydrogel, abbreviated as AGC16/NTS, was designed and constructed by the molecular self-assembly of a cationic gemini surfactant, 1,3-bis(N,N-dimethyl-N-cetylammonium)-2-propylacrylatedibromide (AGC16), and an anionic aromatic gelator, trisodium 1,3,6-naphthalenetrisulfonate (NTS). The AGC16/NTS hydrogel was able to form in a mass ratio range of AGC16 and NTS from 20 : 1 to 10 : 1. It was interestingly found that AGC16/NTS exhibited two phase transitions (gel-to-gel and gel-to-sol) observed by visual and rheological measurements during the heating process, which is rarely reported in the previous literature reports of hydrogels prepared using low molecular weight gelators. Cryogenic scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM), fluorescence emission spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to investigate the temperature-responsive properties and molecular self-assembly mechanism of the hydrogel AGC16/NTS. During the gel-to-gel transition process, the temperature-responsive changes in the visual appearance of AGC16/NTS (turbid to transparent) were clearly observed. Compared with the transparent gel, the turbid gel possesses higher mechanical strength and a much more compact network mophology due to stronger intermolecular hydrophobic association beetween gelators. The molecular self-assembly modes for the two different hydrogel states (turbid and transparent gel) were proposed, helping to further understand the hydrogel transition mechanisms at a molecular level.

Two-component gelator isomers with different combination of amine and acid: Helical/non-helical morphology and selective adsorption of dyes

Hydrogels induced by two-component gelator isomers based on the different amine/acid interactions were investigated. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy images of the xerogel obtained from the two hydrogels revealed different assembly morphologies. While left-handed helical fibers were observed for the amine-acid based xerogel, acid-amine underwent self-assembly to afford smooth fibers. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, fluorescence, and X-ray diffraction measurements combined with density functional theory calculations suggested that the different self-assembly patterns of gelators resulted in opposite electric charges on the xerogel surfaces, in line with Zeta potential measurements. Based on these opposite charges resulting from their different self-assemblies, both xerogels demonstrated efficient dye adsorption abilities with different selectivities. Interestingly, the adsorption performance was not influenced by the salt in the dye solution. Furthermore, the xerogels still showed high dye adsorption efficiency after four cycles. These results provide a two-component hydrogel method for the purification of dye-polluted water systems, while also paving the way for future design of functionalized supramolecular self-assembly systems.

Luminescent Naphthalene Diimide-Based Peptide in Aqueous Medium and in Solid State: Rewritable Fluorescent Color Code

This study convincingly demonstrates a unique example of the self-assembly of a naphthalene diimide (NDI)-appended peptide into a fluorescent J-aggregate in aqueous media. Moreover, this aggregated species shows a remarkable yellow fluorescence in solid state, an unusual phenomenon for NDI-based compounds. The aggregated species has been characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, time-correlated single proton counting (TCSPC), UV-vis, and photoluminescence studies. TEM images reveal cross-linked nanofibrillar morphology of this aggregated species in water (pH 7.4). TCSPC study clearly indicates that the aggregated species in water has a higher average lifetime compared to that of the non-aggregated species. Interestingly, this NDI-based peptide shows H+ ion concentration-dependent change in the emission property in water. The fluorescence output is erased completely in the presence of an alkali, and it reappears in the presence of an acid, indicating its erasing and rewritable property. This indicates its probable use in authentication tools for security purposes as a rewritable fluorescence color code. This NDI-appended peptide-based molecule can be used for encryption of information due to erasing and rewritable property of the molecule in the aggregated state in aqueous medium.

A chiral BINOL-based Gemini amphiphilic gelator and its specific discrimination of native arginine by gelation in water

A novel axially chiral cationic Gemini amphiphile gelator (S1) derived from (S)-BINOL has been synthesized and characterized by ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, ESI-MS and FT-IR analyses. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of S1 was determined to be 0.21 mM in water at room temperature. A transparent hydrogel with S1 at 43 mM was obtained at room temperature and characterized using various methods including SEM, CD, fluorescence, ¹H NMR, FT-IR, and XRD. The results indicate that the hydrophobic effect of long alkyl chains, π-π stacking of naphthalene rings, and intermolecular hydrogen-bonding of the amide groups of S1 should be responsible for the hydrogel formation. Moreover, an 8.5 mM aqueous solution of S1 could gel by the addition of l-arginine, whereas it failed to gel in the presence of other 15 amino acids, respectively. It is suggested that S1 could discriminate native arginine by hydrogel formation, mainly due to the electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding effects between S1 and l-arginine molecules.

Strong Blue Emissive Supramolecular Self-Assembly System Based on Naphthalimide Derivatives and Its Ability of Detection and Removal of 2,4,6-Trinitrophenol

Two simple and novel gelators (G-P with pyridine and G-B with benzene) with different C-4 substitution groups on naphthalimide derivatives have been designed and characterized. Two gelators could form organogels in some solvents or mixed solvents. The self-assembly processes of G-P in a mixed solvent of acetonitrile/H₂O (1/1, v/v) and G-B in acetonitrile were studied by means of electron microscopy and spectroscopy. The organogel of G-P in the mixed solvent of acetonitrile/H₂O (1/1, v/v) formed an intertwined fiber network, and its emission spectrum had an obvious blue shift compared with that of solution. By contrast, the organogel of G-B in acetonitrile formed a straight fiber, and its emission had an obvious red shift compared with that of solution. G-P and G-B were employed in detecting nitroaromatic compounds because of their electron-rich property. G-P is more sensitive and selective toward 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) compared with G-B. The sensing mechanisms were investigated by ¹H NMR spectroscopic experiments and theoretical calculations. From these experimental results, it is proposed that electron transfer occurs from the electron-rich G-P molecule to the electron-deficient TNP because of the possibility of complex formation between G-P and TNP. The G-P molecule could detect TNP in water, organic solvent media, as well as using test strips. It is worth mentioning that the organogel G-P can not only detect TNP but also remove TNP from the solution into the organogel system.

Partially Acetylated or Benzoylated Arabinose Derivatives as Structurally Simple Organogelators: Effect of the Ester Protecting Group on Gel Properties

Sugar-based low-molecular-weight gelators (LMWGs) have been used for various applications for a long time. Herein, structurally simple, ester-protected arabinosides are reported as low-molecular-weight organogelators (LMOGs) that are able to gel aromatic solvents, as well as petrol and diesel. Studies on the mechanical strength of the gels, through detailed rheological experiments, indicate that gels from the 1,2-dibenzoylated arabinose gelator possess better mechanical properties than those from the 1,2-diacetylated gelator. These results are interpreted in terms of the tendency of the former to form fibers with comparatively lower diameter than those of the latter, based on detailed field-emission SEM and AFM studies. Investigations of the interactions responsible for the self-assembly of gelators through IR spectroscopy and wide-angle X-ray scattering reveal that the primary interactions responsible are hydrogen bonds between the hydroxyl groups and ester C=O, which is absent in the solid state of the gelators. In addition, π interactions present in the 1,2-dibenzoylated derivative result in a more regular arrangement, which, in turn, leads to better mechanical properties of the gels compared with those of the 1,2-diacetylated gelator.

Nonresonant and Local Field Effects in Peptidic Nanostructures Bearing Oligo(p-phenylenevinylene) Units

Peptide nanostructures with built-in electronic functions offer a new platform for biomaterial science. In this report, we interrogate the influences of the immediate peptide environment around oligo(p-phenylenevinylene) (OPV3) electronic units embedded within one-dimensional peptide nanostructures on the resulting photophysics as assessed by UV-vis, photoluminescence (PL), and circular dichroism spectroscopies. To do so, we studied peptide-core-peptide molecules where the core was either OPV3 or an aliphatic n-decyl chain. Coassemblies of these molecules wherein the π-core was diluted as a minority component within a majority aliphatic matrix allowed for the variation of interchromophore exciton coupling commonly found in homoassemblies of peptide-OPV3-peptide monomers. Upon coassembly of the peptides, a hydrophilic tripeptide sequence (Asp-Asp-Asp-, DDD-) promoted the dilution/isolation of the peptide-π-peptide molecules in the majority peptide-decyl-peptide matrix whereas a hydrophobic tripeptide sequence (Asp-Val-Val-, DVV-) promoted the formation of self-associated stacks within the nanostructures. We also performed temperature variation studies to induce the reorganization of π-electron units in the spatially constrained n-decyl environment. This study elucidates the nonresonant (e.g., conformational) and local peptide field effects enforced within the internal environment of peptide nanomaterials and how they lead to varied photophysical properties of the embedded π-electron cores. It offers new insights on tuning the optoelectronic properties of these types of materials on the basis of the local electronic and steric environment available within the nanostructures.
