General Physical Description of the Behavior of Oppositely Charged Polyelectrolyte/Surfactant Mixtures at the Air/Water Interface

The Gibbs and Butler Equations and the Surface Activity of Dilute Aqueous Solutions of Strong and Weak Linear Polyelectrolyte-Surfactant Mixtures: The Roles of Surface Composition and Polydispersity

In a previous paper, we applied a combination of direct measurements of both surface tension and surface excess in conjunction with the Gibbs equation to explain features of the adsorption and surface tension of mixtures of surfactants and strong linear polyelectrolytes at the air-water interface. This paper extends that model by including (i) the restrictions of the Butler equation for the behavior of the surface tension of mixed systems and (ii) the surface behavior of surfactant and linear weak polyelectrolyte mixtures, for which the inclusion of measurements of the surface excess and composition is shown to be particularly important. In addition, a closer examination of earlier data at higher concentrations provides evidence that the surface layering that is often observed in polyelectrolyte-surfactant systems is also an average equilibrium phenomenon and is driven by particular aggregation patterns that occur in some systems and not in others. Although the successful application of the Gibbs and Butler equations indicates that strong polyelectrolyte-surfactant systems can be described in terms of an average equilibrium over wide ranges of concentration, we have identified two concentration ranges where polydispersity in either polyelectrolyte molecular weight or composition results in significant time dependence of the surface behavior.

3D Printing of Aqueous Two-Phase Systems with Linear and Bottlebrush Polyelectrolytes

We formed core-shell-like polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) from an anionic bottlebrush polymer with poly (acrylic acid) side chains with a cationic linear poly (allylamine hydrochloride). By varying the pH, the number of side chains of the polyanionic BB polymers (Nbb), the charge density of the polyelectrolytes, and the salt concentration, the phase separation behavior and salt resistance of the complexes could be tuned by the conformation of the BBs. By combining the linear/bottlebrush polyelectrolyte complexation with all-liquid 3D printing, flow-through tubular constructs were produced that showed selective transport across the PEC membrane comprising the walls of the tubules. These tubular constructs afford a new platform for flow-through delivery systems.

Photoresponsive arylazopyrazole surfactant/PDADMAC mixtures: reversible control of bulk and interfacial properties

In many applications of polyelectrolyte/surfactant (P/S) mixtures, it is difficult to fine-tune them after mixing the components without changing the sample composition, e.g. pH or the ionic strength. Here we report on a new approach where we use photoswitchable surfactants to enable drastic changes in both the bulk and interfacial properties. Poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) mixtures with three alkyl-arylazopyrazole butyl sulfonates (CnAAP) with -H, -butyl and -octyl tails are applied and E/Z photoisomerization of the surfactants is used to cause substantially different hydrophobic interactions between the surfactants and PDADMAC. These remotely controlled changes affect significantly the P/S binding and allows for tuning both the bulk and interfacial properties of PDADMAC/CnAAP mixtures through light irradiation. For that, we have fixed the surfactant concentrations at values where they exhibit pronounced surface tension changes upon E/Z photoisomerization with 365 nm UV light (Z) and 520 nm green (E) light and have varied the PDADMAC concentration. The electrophoretic mobility can be largely tuned by photoisomerisation of CnAAP surfactants and P/S aggregates, which can even exhibit a charge reversal from negative to positive values or vice versa. In addition, low colloidal stability at equimolar concentrations of PDADMAC with CnAAP surfactants in the E configuration lead to the formation of large aggregates in the bulk which can be broken up by irradiation with UV light when the surfactant's alkyl chain is short enough (C0AAP). Vibrational sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy reveals changes at the interface similar to the bulk, where the charging state at air-water interfaces can be modified with light irradiation. Using SFG spectroscopy, we interrogated the O-H stretching modes of interfacial H2O and provide qualitative information on surface charging that is complemented by neutron reflectometry, from which we resolved the surface excesses of PDADMAC and CnAAP at the air-water interface, independently.

Pressure Changes Across a Membrane Formed by Coacervation of Oppositely Charged Polymer-Surfactant Systems

We investigate the mass transfer and membrane growth processes during capsule formation by the interaction of the biopolymer xanthan gum with CnTAB surfactants. When a drop of xanthan gum polymer solution is added to the surfactant solution, a membrane is formed by coacervation. It encapsulates the polymer drop in the surfactant solution. The underlying mechanisms and dynamic processes during capsule formation are not yet understood in detail. Therefore, we characterized the polymer-surfactant complex formation during coacervation by measuring the surface tension and surface elasticity at the solution-air interface for different surfactant chain lengths and concentrations. The adsorption behavior of the mixed polymer-surfactant system at the solution-air interface supports the understanding of observed trends during the capsule formation. We further measured the change in capsule pressure over time and simultaneously imaged the membrane growth via confocal microscopy. The cross-linking and shrinkage during the membrane formation by coacervation leads to an increasing tensile stress in the elastic membrane, resulting in a rapid pressure rise. Afterward, the pressure gradually decreases and the capsule shrinks as water diffuses out. This is not only due to the initial capsule overpressure but also due to osmosis caused by the higher ionic strength of the surfactant solution outside the capsule compared to the polymer solution inside the capsule. The influence of polymer concentration and surfactant type and concentration on the pressure changes and the membrane structure are studied in this work, providing detailed insights into the dynamic membrane formation process by coacervation. This knowledge can be used to produce capsules with tailored membrane properties and to develop a suitable encapsulation protocol in technological applications. The obtained insights into the mass transfer of water across the capsule membrane are important for future usage in separation techniques and the food industry and allow us to better predict the capsule time stability.

Boundary Lubrication Performance of Polyelectrolyte-Surfactant Complexes on Biomimetic Surfaces

Aqueous mixtures of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes and surfactants are useful in many industrial applications, such as shampoos and hair conditioners. In this work, we investigate the friction between biomimetic hair surfaces in the presence of adsorbed complexes formed from cationic polyelectrolytes and anionic surfactants in an aqueous solution. We apply nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations using the coarse-grained MARTINI model. We first developed new MARTINI parameters for cationic guar gum (CGG), a functionalized, plant-derived polysaccharide. The complexation of CGG and the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on virgin and chemically damaged biomimetic hair surfaces was studied using a sequential adsorption approach. We then carried out squeeze-out and sliding NEMD simulations to assess the boundary lubrication performance of the CGG-SDS complex compressed between two hair surfaces. At low pressure, we observe a synergistic friction behavior for the CGG-SDS complex, which gives lower shear stress than either pure CGG or SDS. Here, friction is dominated by viscous dissipation in an interfacial layer comprising SDS and water. At higher pressures, which are probably beyond those usually experienced during hair manipulation, SDS and water are squeezed out, and friction increases due to interdigitation. The outcomes of this work are expected to be beneficial to fine-tune and screen sustainable hair care formulations to provide low friction and therefore a smooth feel and reduced entanglement.

The evolution of equilibrium poly(styrene sulfonate) and dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide supramolecular structure in dilute aqueous solution with increasing surfactant binding

HYPOTHESIS

In the last 20 years, it has been demonstrated that oppositely charged polyelectrolyte-surfactant (PE-S) mixtures are prone to forming kinetically arrested non-equilibrium aggregates, which are present in the prepared mixtures from rather low surfactant-to-polymer-repeat-unit ratios. Practically, this means that the PE-S mixtures used for the structural investigations of the formed PE-S complexes are typically a mixture of the primary PE-S complexes and large non-equilibrium aggregates of close to charge-neutral complexes.

EXPERIMENTS

In this work, we present a unique approach that allows the preparation of PE-S mixtures in the equilibrium one-phase region (surfactant binding β, is typically below 80%) without forming non-equilibrium aggregates. We used this method to prepare equilibrium, non-aggregated complexes of sodium poly(styrene sulfonate) (NaPSS, Mw = 17 kDa) and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) (β = 10 - 70%) both in water and in an inert electrolyte (100 mM NaCl). The evolution of the complex structure was monitored by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) as a function of increasing surfactant binding (β), and the measured scattering data were fitted by suitable structural models on an absolute scale where concentrations, compositions, and scattering contrasts calculated from molecular properties are used as restraints.

FINDINGS

We could show that at low binding (β < 30%), the system is a mixture of bare polyelectrolyte coils and NaPSS-DTAB complexes containing a closed surfactant associates of low aggregation number wrapped by the polyelectrolyte chain. Once all polymer chains are occupied by a micelle-like surfactant aggregate, the aggregation number increases linearly with increasing surfactant chemical potential. Using the structural insight provided by the SAXS measurements, we could fit the experimental binding isotherm data with a physically coherent, simple thermodynamic model. Finally, we also compared the stoichiometric NaPSS-DTAB precipitate's structure with the equilibrium complexes' structure.

Effects of Charge Density on Spread Hyperbranched Polyelectrolyte/Surfactant Films at the Air/Water Interface

The interfacial structure and morphology of films spread from hyperbranched polyethylene imine/sodium dodecyl sulfate (PEI/SDS) aggregates at the air/water interface have been resolved for the first time with respect to polyelectrolyte charged density. A recently developed method to form efficient films from the dissociation of aggregates using a minimal quantity of materials is exploited as a step forward in enhancing understanding of the film properties with a view to their future use in technological applications. Interfacial techniques that resolve different time and length scales, namely, ellipsometry, Brewster angle microscopy, and neutron reflectometry, are used. Extended structures of both components are formed under a monolayer of the surfactant with bound polyelectrolytes upon film compression on subphases adjusted to pH 4 or 10, corresponding to high and low charge density of the polyelectrolyte, respectively. A rigid film is related to compact conformation of the PEI in the interfacial structure at pH 4, while it is observed that aggregates remain embedded in mobile films at pH 10. The ability to compact surfactants in the monolayer to the same extent as its maximum coverage in the absence of polyelectrolyte is distinct from the behavior observed for spread films involving linear polyelectrolytes, and intriguingly evidence points to the formation of extended structures over the full range of surface pressures. We conclude that the molecular architecture and charge density can be important parameters in controlling the structures and properties of spread polyelectrolyte/surfactant films, which holds relevance to a range of applications, such as those where PEI is used, including CO2 capture, electronic devices, and gene transfection.

Dilution-Induced Deposition of Concentrated Binary Mixtures of Cationic Polysaccharides and Surfactants

This work investigates the effect of dilution on the phase separation process of binary charged polysaccharide-surfactant mixtures formed by two cationic polysaccharides and up to four surfactants of different nature (anionic, zwitterionic, and neutral), as well as the potential impact of dilution-induced phase separation on the formation of conditioning deposits on charged surfaces, mimicking the negative charge and wettability of damaged hair fibers. The results obtained showed that the dilution behavior of model washing formulations (concentrated polysaccharide-surfactant mixtures) cannot be described in terms of a classical complex precipitation framework, as phase separation phenomena occur even when the aggregates are far from the equilibrium phase separation composition. Therefore, dilution-enhanced deposition cannot be predicted in terms of the worsening of colloidal stability due to the charge neutralization phenomena, as common phase separation and, hence, enhanced deposition occurs even for highly charged complexes.

When Bulk Matters: Disentanglement of the Role of Polyelectrolyte/Surfactant Complexes at Surfaces and in the Bulk of Foam Films

Foam films display exciting systems as on one hand they dictate the performance of macroscopic foams and on the other hand they allow studies of surface forces. With regard to surface forces, we attempt to disentangle the effect of the foam film surfaces and the foam film bulk. For that, we study the influence of salt (LiBr) on foam films formed by mixtures of oppositely charged polyelectrolyte and surfactant: anionic monosulfonated polyphenylene sulfone (sPSO₂-220) and cationic tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C₁₄TAB). Adding a small amount of salt (≤10^-3 M) decreases the foam film stability due to a weakened electrostatic net repulsion. In contrast, a large amount of salt (10^-2 M) unexpectedly increases the foam film stability. Disjoining pressure isotherms reveal that the increased stability is due to an additional steric stabilization, which is attributed to sPSO₂-220/C₁₄TAB complexes in the film bulk. These bulk complexes also contribute to the measured apparent surface potential between the two air/water interfaces. We find, for the first time, the formation of Newton black films for mixtures of anionic polyelectrolytes and cationic surfactants.

Surface Properties of Saponin-Chitosan Mixtures

The surface properties of saponin and saponin-chitosan mixtures were analysed as a function of their bulk mixing ratio using vibrational sum-frequency generation (SFG), surface tensiometry and dilational rheology measurements. Our experiments show that saponin-chitosan mixtures present some remarkable properties, such as a strong amphiphilicity of the saponin and high dilational viscoelasticity. We believe this points to the presence of chitosan in the adsorption layer, despite its complete lack of surface activity. We explain this phenomenon by electrostatic interactions between the saponin as an anionic surfactant and chitosan as a polycation, leading to surface-active saponin-chitosan complexes and aggregates. Analysing the SFG intensity of the O-H stretching bands from interfacial water molecules, we found that in the case of pH 3.4 for a mixture consisting of 0.1 g/L saponin and 0.001 g/L chitosan, the adsorption layer was electrically neutral. This conclusion from SFG spectra is corroborated by results from surface tensiometry showing a significant reduction in surface tension and effects on the dilational surface elasticity strictly at saponin/chitosan ratios, where SFG spectra indicate zero net charge at the air-water interface.

Polyelectrolyte/Surfactant Mixtures: A Pathway to Smart Foams

This review deals with liquid foams stabilized by polyelectrolyte/surfactant (PS) complexes in aqueous solution. It briefly reviews all the important aspects of foam physics at several scales, from interfaces to macroscopic foams, needed to understand the basics of these complex systems, focusing on those particular aspects of foams stabilized by PS mixtures. The final section includes a few examples of smart foams based on PS complexes that have been reported recently in the literature. These PS complexes open an opportunity to develop new intelligent dispersed materials with potential in many fields, such as oil industry, environmental remediation, and pharmaceutical industry, among others. However, there is much work to be done to understand the mechanism involved in the stabilization of foams with PS complexes. Understanding those underlying mechanisms is vital to successfully formulate smart systems. This review is written in the hope of stimulating further work in the physics of PS foams and, particularly, in the search for responsive foams based on polymer-surfactant mixtures.

Insights into Extended Structures and Their Driving Force: Influence of Salt on Polyelectrolyte/Surfactant Mixtures at the Air/Water Interface

This paper addresses the effect of polyelectrolyte stiffness on the surface structure of polyelectrolyte (P)/surfactant (S) mixtures. Therefore, two different anionic Ps with different intrinsic persistence length lP are studied while varying the salt concentration (0-10-2 M). Either monosulfonated polyphenylene sulfone (sPSO2-220, lP ∼20 nm) or sodium poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS, lP ∼1 nm) is mixed with the cationic surfactant tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C14TAB) well below its critical micelle concentration and studied with tensiometry and neutron reflectivity experiments. We kept the S concentration (10-4 M) constant, while we varied the P concentration (10-5-10-3 M of the monomer, denoted as monoM). P and S adsorb at the air/water interface for all studied mixtures. Around the bulk stoichiometric mixing point (BSMP), PSS/C14TAB mixtures lose their surface activity, whereas sPSO2-220/C14TAB mixtures form extended structures perpendicular to the surface (meaning a layer of S with attached P and additional layers of P and S underneath instead of only a monolayer of S with P). Considering the different P monomer structures as well as the impact of salt, we identified the driving force for the formation of these extended structures: compensation of all interfacial charges (P/S ratio ∼1) to maximize the gain of entropy. By increasing the flexibility of P, we can tune the interfacial structures from extended structures to monolayers. These findings may help improve applications based on the adsorption of P/S mixtures in the fields of cosmetic or oil recovery.

Neutron reflection and the thermodynamics of the air-water interface

By means of isotopic substitution, measurements of the neutron reflectivity (NR) from a flat water surface generally give model independent measurements of the amount of a chosen solute at the surface irrespective of whether the layer is a mixture or whether there is any aggregation in the bulk solution. Previously, adsorption at air-water interfaces has been determined by applying the Gibbs equation to surface tension (ST) measurements, which requires assumptions about the composition of the surface and about the activity of the solute in the bulk, which, in turn, means that in practice the surface is assumed to consist of the pure solute or of a mixture of pure solutes, and that the activity of the solute in the bulk solution is known. The use of NR in combination with ST-Gibbs measurements makes it possible to (i) avoid these assumptions and hence understand several patterns of ST behaviour previously considered to be anomalous and (ii) to start to analyse quantitatively the behaviour of mixed surfactants both below and above the critical micelle concentration. These two developments in our understanding of the thermodynamics of the air-water interface are described with recent examples.

Study of the Dilution-Induced Deposition of Concentrated Mixtures of Polyelectrolytes and Surfactants

Mixtures of polyelectrolytes and surfactants are commonly used in many technological applications where the challenge is to provide well-defined modifications of the surface properties, as is the case of washing formulations in cosmetics. However, if contemporary experimental and theoretical methods can provide insights on their behavior in concentrated formulations, less is known on their behavior under practical use conditions, e.g., under dilution and vectorization of deposits. This makes it difficult to make predictions for specific performance, as, for example, good hair manageability after a shampoo or a comfortable sensorial appreciation after a skin cleanser. This is especially important when considering the formulation of new, more eco-friendly formulations. In this work, a detailed study of the phase separation process induced by dilution is described, as well as the impact on the deposition of conditioning material on negatively charged surfaces. In order to gain a more detailed physical insight, several polyelectrolyte–surfactant pairs, formed by two different polymers and five surfactants that, although non-natural or eco-friendly, can be considered as models of classical formulations, have been studied. The results evidenced that upon dilution the behavior, and hence its deposition onto the surface, cannot be predicted in terms of the behavior of simpler pseudo-binary (mixtures of a polymer and a surfactant) or pseudo-ternary mixtures (two polymers and a surfactant). In many cases, phase separation was observed for concentrations similar to those corresponding to the components in some technological formulations, whereas the latter appeared as monophasic systems. Therefore, it may be assumed that the behavior in multicomponent formulations is the result of a complex interplay of synergistic interactions between the different components that will require revisiting when new, more eco-sustainable ingredients are considered.

Responsive Material and Interfacial Properties through Remote Control of Polyelectrolyte-Surfactant Mixtures

Polyelectrolyte/surfactant (P/S) mixtures find many applications but are static in nature and cannot be reversibly reconfigured through the application of external stimuli. Using a new type of photoswitchable surfactants, we use light to trigger property changes in mixtures of an anionic polyelectrolyte with a cationic photoswitch such as electrophoretic mobilities, particle size, as well as their interfacial structure and their ability to stabilize aqueous foam. For that, we show that prevailing hydrophobic intermolecular interactions can be remotely controlled between poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) (PSS) and arylazopyrazole tetraethylammonium bromide (AAP-TB). Shifting the chemical potential for P/S binding with E/Z photoisomerization of the surfactants can reversibly disintegrate even large aggregates (>4 μm) and is accompanied by a substantial change in the net charging state of PSS/AAP-TB complexes, e.g., from negative to positive excess charges upon light irradiation. In addition to the drastic changes in the bulk solution, also at air-water interfaces, the interfacial stoichiometry and structure change drastically on the molecular level with E/Z photoisomerization, which can also drive the stability of aqueous foam on a macroscopic level.

Interfacial Polyelectrolyte-Surfactant Complexes Regulate Escape of Microdroplets Elastically Trapped in Thermotropic Liquid Crystals

Polyelectrolytes adsorbed at soft interfaces are used in contexts such as materials synthesis, stabilization of emulsions, and control of rheology. Here, we explore how polyelectrolyte adsorption to aqueous interfaces of thermotropic liquid crystals (LCs) influences surfactant-stabilized aqueous microdroplets that are elastically trapped within the LCs. We find that adsorption of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) to the interface of a nematic phase of 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) triggers the ejection of microdroplets decorated with sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS), consistent with an attractive electrical double layer interaction between the microdroplets and LC interface. The concentration of PDDA that triggers release of the microdroplets (millimolar), however, is three orders of magnitude higher than that which saturates the LC interfacial charge (micromolar). Observation of a transient reorientation of the LC during escape of microdroplets leads us to conclude that complexes of PDDA and SDS form at the LC interface and thereby regulate interfacial charge and microdroplet escape. Poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) also triggers escape of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB)-decorated aqueous microdroplets from 5CB with dynamics consistent with the formation of interfacial polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes. In contrast to PDDA-SDS, however, we do not observe a transient reorientation of the LC when using PSS-DTAB, reflecting weak association of DTAB and PSS and slow kinetics of formation of PSS-DTAB complexes. Our results reveal the central role of polyelectrolyte-surfactant dynamics in regulating the escape of the microdroplets and, more broadly, that LCs offer the basis of a novel probe of the structure and properties of polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes at interfaces. We demonstrate the utility of these new insights by triggering the ejection of microdroplets from LCs using peptide-polymer amphiphiles that switch their net charge upon being processed by enzymes. Overall, our results provide fresh insight into the formation of polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes at aqueous-LC interfaces and new principles for the design of responsive soft matter.

Particle-laden fluid/fluid interfaces: physico-chemical foundations

Particle-laden fluid/fluid interfaces are ubiquitous in academia and industry, which has fostered extensive research efforts trying to disentangle the physico-chemical bases underlying the trapping of particles to fluid/fluid interfaces as well as the properties of the obtained layers. The understanding of such aspects is essential for exploiting the ability of particles on the stabilization of fluid/fluid interface for the fabrication of novel interface-dominated devices, ranging from traditional Pickering emulsions to more advanced reconfigurable devices. This review tries to provide a general perspective of the physico-chemical aspects associated with the stabilization of interfaces by colloidal particles, mainly chemical isotropic spherical colloids. Furthermore, some aspects related to the exploitation of particle-laden fluid/fluid interfaces on the stabilization of emulsions and foams will be also highlighted. It is expected that this review can be used for researchers and technologist as an initial approach to the study of particle-laden fluid layers.

Interactions between an Associative Amphiphilic Block Polyelectrolyte and Surfactants in Water: Effect of Charge Type on Solution Properties and Aggregation

The study of interactions between polyelectrolytes (PE) and surfactants is of great interest for both fundamental and applied research. These mixtures can represent, for example, models of self-assembly and molecular organization in biological systems, but they are also relevant in industrial applications. Amphiphilic block polyelectrolytes represent an interesting class of PE, but their interactions with surfactants have not been extensively explored so far, most studies being restricted to non-associating PE. In this work, interactions between an anionic amphiphilic triblock polyelectrolyte and different types of surfactants bearing respectively negative, positive and no charge, are investigated via surface tension and solution rheology measurements for the first time. It is evidenced that the surfactants have different effects on viscosity and surface tension, depending on their charge type. Micellization of the surfactant is affected by the presence of the polymer in all cases; shear viscosity of polymer solutions decreases in presence of the same charge or nonionic surfactants, while the opposite charge surfactant causes precipitation. This study highlights the importance of the charge type, and the role of the associating hydrophobic block in the PE structure, on the solution behavior of the mixtures. Moreover, a possible interaction model is proposed, based on the obtained data.

Determination of SLES in Personal Care Products by Colloid Titration with Light Reflection Measurements

The method of colloid titration with poly(diallyldimethylammonium) chloride has been improved to detect the endpoint with an off-vessel light reflectance sensor. The digital color sensor used measures light reflectance by means of light guides, with no immersion into the reaction solution. In such a method, the optical signal is free of disturbances caused by sticky flocs in the solution. The improved automatic titration set was applied for the determination of sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) in industrial batches and commercial personal care products. The sample color and opacity do not disturb the SLES quantification. When the SLES content lies in the range from 5% to 9%, the optimal sample weight is from 6 g to 3 g.

Polymer-Colloid Complexes Based on Cationic Imidazolium Amphiphile, Polyacrylic Acid and DNA Decamer

The solution behavior and physicochemical characteristics of polymer-colloid complexes based on cationic imidazolium amphiphile with a dodecyl tail (IA-12) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) or DNA decamer (oligonucleotide) were evaluated using tensiometry, conductometry, dynamic and electrophoretic light scattering and fluorescent spectroscopy and microscopy. It has been established that PAA addition to the surfactant system resulted in a ca. 200-fold decrease in the aggregation threshold of IA-12, with the hydrodynamic diameter of complexes ranging within 100-150 nm. Electrostatic forces are assumed to be the main driving force in the formation of IA-12/PAA complexes. Factors influencing the efficacy of the complexation of IA-12 with oligonucleotide were determined. The nonconventional mode of binding with the involvement of hydrophobic interactions and the intercalation mechanism is probably responsible for the IA-12/oligonucleotide complexation, and a minor contribution of electrostatic forces occurred. The latter was supported by zeta potential measurements and the gel electrophoresis technique, which demonstrated the low degree of charge neutralization of the complexes. Importantly, cellular uptake of the IA-12/oligonucleotide complex was confirmed by fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry data on the example of M-HeLa cells. While single IA-12 samples exhibit roughly similar cytotoxicity, IA-12-oligonucleotide complexes show a selective effect toward M-HeLa cells (IC50 1.1 µM) compared to Chang liver cells (IC50 23.1 µM).

Polyelectrolyte Multilayers on Soft Colloidal Nanosurfaces: A New Life for the Layer-By-Layer Method

The Layer-by-Layer (LbL) method is a well-established method for the assembly of nanomaterials with controlled structure and functionality through the alternate deposition onto a template of two mutual interacting molecules, e.g., polyelectrolytes bearing opposite charge. The current development of this methodology has allowed the fabrication of a broad range of systems by assembling different types of molecules onto substrates with different chemical nature, size, or shape, resulting in numerous applications for LbL systems. In particular, the use of soft colloidal nanosurfaces, including nanogels, vesicles, liposomes, micelles, and emulsion droplets as a template for the assembly of LbL materials has undergone a significant growth in recent years due to their potential impact on the design of platforms for the encapsulation and controlled release of active molecules. This review proposes an analysis of some of the current trends on the fabrication of LbL materials using soft colloidal nanosurfaces, including liposomes, emulsion droplets, or even cells, as templates. Furthermore, some fundamental aspects related to deposition methodologies commonly used for fabricating LbL materials on colloidal templates together with the most fundamental physicochemical aspects involved in the assembly of LbL materials will also be discussed.

Impact of polyelectrolyte-surfactant interactions on the rheology and wet lubrication performance of conditioning shampoo

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study is to understand the impact of the cationic polymer merquat on the rheological behavior of the mixed surfactant system of sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) and cocamidopropyl betaine (CapB) as well as the impact of varying formulation conditions on the wet lubrication performance of the SLES-CapB-Merquat system.

METHODS

Rotation mechanical Rheometry was used to study the rheological response of the SLES-CapB-Merquat systems. Frequency sweeps were conducted to analyze the rheological properties of the system at low frequency ranges and bulk viscosity of the system was studied at high shear rates at varying salt and polymer concentrations. Wet combing tests and hair friction tests were run on the Dia-stron MTT175 flexible miniature tensile tester in order to evaluate the conditioning effects of the different formulations.

RESULTS

The SLES-CapB system on its own exhibits very little viscosity. The bulk rheology results show that the addition of Merquat enhances the viscosity and viscoelastic properties of the SLES-CapB-Merquat system indicating the presence of electrostatic interactions between the surfactant and polyelectrolyte. Addition of salt had a significant impact on the system's rheological response due to the charge screening effect of salt. Wet combing force data indicate that the charged polyelectrolyte binds to the hair substrate resulting in reduced combing force values after the product was applied. The addition of silicone oil to the formulation seemed to greatly enhance the conditioning effect of the formulation.

CONCLUSION

The charge interactions between SLES, CapB and Merquat results in the formation of an integrated gel like network, thus building the viscosity of the system. Variation of parameters like polymer and salt concentration has the potential to modify the bulk rheological properties and consequently the wet lubrication properties of the system.

Evaporation of Sessile Droplets of Polyelectrolyte/Surfactant Mixtures on Silicon Wafers

The wetting and evaporation behavior of droplets of aqueous solutions of mixtures of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) solution, PDADMAC, with two different anionic surfactants, sodium laureth sulfate, SLES, and sodium N-lauroyl N-methyl taurate, SLMT, were studied in terms of the changes of the contact angle θ and contact length L of sessile droplets of the mixtures on silicon wafers at a temperature of 25 °C and different relative humidities in the range of 30–90%. The advancing contact angle θa was found to depend on the surfactant concentration, independent of the relative humidity, with the mixtures containing SLES presenting improved wetting behaviors. Furthermore, a constant droplet contact angle was not observed during evaporation due to pinning of the droplet at the coffee-ring that was formed. The kinetics for the first evaporation stage of the mixture were independent of the relative humidity, with the evaporation behavior being well described in terms of the universal law for evaporation.

Adsorption of Mixtures of a Pegylated Lipid with Anionic and Zwitterionic Surfactants at Solid/Liquid

This work explores the association of a pegylated lipid (DSPE-PEG) with different anionic and zwitterionic surfactants (pseudo-binary and pseudo-ternary polymer+ surfactant mixtures), and the adsorption of the polymer + surfactant aggregates onto negatively charged surfaces, with a surface charge density similar to that existing on the damaged hair epicuticle. Dynamic light scattering and zeta potential measurements shows that, in solution, the polymer + surfactant association results from an intricate balance between electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions, which leads to the formation of at least two different types of micellar-like polymer + surfactant aggregates. The structure and physicochemical properties of such aggregates were found strongly dependent on the specific nature and concentration of the surfactant. The adsorption of the polymer + surfactant aggregates onto negatively charged surface was studied using a set of surface-sensitive techniques (quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring, ellipsometry and Atomic Force Microscopy), which allows obtaining information about the adsorbed amount, the water content of the layers and the topography of the obtained films. Ion-dipole interactions between the negative charges of the surface and the oxyethylene groups of the polymer + surfactant aggregates appear as the main driving force of the deposition process. This is strongly dependent on the surfactant nature and its concentration, with the impact of the latter on the adsorption being especially critical when anionic surfactant are incorporated within the aggregates. This study opens important perspectives for modulating the deposition of a poorly interacting polymer onto negatively charged surfaces, which can impact in the fabrication on different aspects with technological and industrial interest.

Behavior of the water/vapor interface of chitosan solutions with an anionic surfactant: effect of polymer-surfactant interactions

The adsorption of mixtures formed by chitosan and sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) at the water/vapor interface has been studied on the basis of their impact on the equilibrium surface tension of the interface, and the response of such an interface to mechanical deformations. The analysis of the surfactant binding to the chitosan chains evidenced that the chitosan-SLES solutions were mixtures of polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes and a non-negligible amount of free surfactant molecules. The interfacial properties showed two well-differentiated regions for interfacial adsorption as a function of the SLES concentration: (i) at a low surfactant concentration, co-adsorption of chitosan and SLES occurs, and (ii) at high concentrations, the surface is mostly occupied by SLES molecules. This behavior may be interpreted in terms of a complex equilibration mechanism of the interfacial layers, where different coupled dynamic processes may be involved. Furthermore, the use of the time-concentration superposition principle has confirmed the different dynamic behaviors of the chitosan-SLES adsorption as a function of the SLES concentration. This work sheds light on some of the most fundamental bases governing the physico-chemical behavior of mixtures formed by a biopolymer and a surfactant, where their complex behavior is governed by an intricate balance of bulk and interfacial interactions.

Deposition of Synthetic and Bio-Based Polycations onto Negatively Charged Solid Surfaces: Effect of the Polymer Cationicity, Ionic Strength, and the Addition of an Anionic Surfactant

The deposition of layers of different polycations (synthetic or derived from natural, renewable resources) onto oppositely charged surfaces has been studied using ellipsometry and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D). Information about the thickness of the deposited layers and their water content was ascertained. The adsorption of the different polycations onto negatively charged surfaces was found to be a complex process, which is influenced by the chemical nature of the polymer chains, ionic strength, polymer concentration and the addition of additives such as surfactants. The experimental picture shows a good agreement with theoretical calculations performed using the Self-Consistent Mean Field (SCF) approach. The results show that the electrostatically-driven deposition can be tuned by modifying the physico-chemical properties of the solutions and the chemical nature of the adsorbed polymer. This versatile approach is a big step forward in aiding the design of new polymers for many industrial applications and, in particular, the design of sustainable washing formulations for cosmetic applications.

Interaction of Low Molecular Weight Poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) and Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate in Low Surfactant-Polyelectrolyte Ratio, Salt-Free Solutions

Coacervation is widely used in formulations to induce a beneficial character to the formulation, but nonequilibrium effects are often manifest. Electrophoretic NMR (eNMR), pulsed-gradient spin-echo NMR (PGSE-NMR), and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) have been used to quantify the interaction between low molecular cationic poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) and the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in aqueous solution as a model for the precursor state to such nonequilibrium processes. The NMR data show that, within the low surfactant concentration one-phase region, an increasing surfactant concentration leads to a reduction in the charge on the polymer and a collapse of its solution conformation, attaining minimum values coincident with the macroscopic phase separation boundary. Interpretation of the scattering data reveals how the rodlike polymer changes over the same surfactant concentration window, with no discernible fingerprint of micellar type aggregates, but rather with the emergence of disklike and lamellar structures. At the highest surfactant concentration, the emergence of a weak Bragg peak in both the polymer and surfactant scattering suggests these precursor disk and lamellar structures evolve into paracrystalline stacks which ultimately phase separate. Addition of the nonionic surfactant hexa(ethylene glycol) monododecyl ether (C₁₂E₆) to the system seems to have little effect on the PDADMAC/SDS interaction as determined by NMR, merely displacing the observed behavior to lower SDS concentrations, commensurate with the total SDS present in the system. In other words, PDADMAC causes the disruption of the mixed SDS/C₁₂E₆ micelle, leading to SDS-rich PDADAMC/surfactant complexes coexisting with C₁₂E₆-rich micelles in solution.

Impact of the bulk aggregation on the adsorption of oppositely charged polyelectrolyte-surfactant mixtures onto solid surfaces

The understanding of the deposition of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes-surfactant mixtures onto solid surfaces presents a high interest in current days due to the recognized impact of the obtained layers on different industrial sectors and the performance of several consumer products (e.g. formulations of shampoos and hair conditioners). This results from the broad range of structures and properties that can present the mixed layers, which in most of the cases mirror the association process occurring between the polyelectrolyte chains and the oppositely charged surfactants in the bulk. Therefore, the understanding of the adsorption processes and characteristics of the adsorbed layers can be only attained from a careful examination of the self-assembly processes occurring in the solution. This review aims to contribute to the understanding of the interaction of polyelectrolyte-surfactant mixtures with solid surfaces, which is probably one of the most underexplored aspects of these type of systems. For this purpose, a comprehensive discussion on the correlations between the aggregates formed in the solutions and the deposition of the obtained complexes upon such association onto solid surfaces will be presented. This makes it necessary to take a closer look to the most important forces driving such processes.

Counterion Condensation, the Gibbs Equation, and Surfactant Binding: An Integrated Description of the Behavior of Polyelectrolytes and Their Mixtures with Surfactants at the Air-Water Interface

By applying the Gibbs equation to the bulk binding isotherms and surface composition of the air-water (A-W) interface in polyelectrolyte-surfactant (PE-S) systems, we show that their surface behavior can be explained semiquantitatively in terms of four concentration regions, which we label as A, B, C, and D. In the lowest-concentration range A, there are no bound PE-S complexes in the bulk but there may be adsorption of PE-S complexes at the surface. When significant adsorption occurs in this region, the surface tension (ST) drops with increasing concentration like a simple surfactant solution. Region B extends from the onset of bulk PE-S binding to the end of cooperative binding, in which the slow variation of surfactant activity with cooperative binding means that the ST changes relatively little, although adsorption may be significant. This leads to an approximate plateau, which may be at high or low ST. Region C starts where the binding in the bulk complex loses its cooperativity leading to a rapid change of surfactant activity with the total concentration. This, combined with significant adsorption, often leads to a sharp drop in ST. Region D is where precipitation and redissolution of the bulk PE-S complex occur. ST peaks may arise in region D because of loss of the solution complex that matches the value of the preferred surface stoichiometry, which seems to have a well-defined value for each system. The analysis is applied to the experimental systems, sodium polystyrene sulfonate-alkyltrimethylammonium bromides and poly(diallyldimethyl chloride)-sodium alkyl sulfates, with and without the added electrolyte, and includes data from bulk binding isotherms, phase diagrams, aggregation behavior, and direct measurements of the surface excess and stoichiometry of the surface. The successful fits of the Gibbs equation to the data confirm that the surfaces in these systems are largely equilibrated.

Physicochemical Aspects of the Performance of Hair-Conditioning Formulations

Most of the currently used products for repairing and conditioning hair rely on the deposition of complex formulations, based on mixtures involving macromolecules and surfactants, onto the surface of hair fibers. This leads to the partial covering of the damaged areas appearing in the outermost region of capillary fibers, which enables the decrease of the friction between fibers, improving their manageability and hydration. The optimization of shampoo and conditioner formulations necessitates a careful examination of the different physicochemical parameters related to the conditioning mechanism, e.g., the thickness of the deposits, its water content, topography or frictional properties. This review discusses different physicochemical aspects which impact the understanding of the most fundamental bases of the conditioning process.

Luengo G, Rubio AM, Rey A, Léonforte F. Self-Consistent Mean Field Calculations of Polyelectrolyte-Surfactant Mixtures in Solution and upon Adsorption onto Negatively Charged Surfaces

Self-Consistent Mean-Field Calculations (SCF) have provided a semi-quantitative description of the physico-chemical behavior of six different polyelectrolyte-surfactant mixtures. The SCF calculations performed showed that both the formation of polymer-surfactant in bulk and the adsorption of the formed complexes onto negatively-charged surfaces are strongly affected by the specific nature of the considered systems, with the polymer-surfactant interactions playing a central role in the self-assembly of the complexes that, in turn, affects their adsorption onto interfaces and surfaces. This work evidences that SCF calculations are a valuable tool for deepening on the understanding of the complex physico-chemical behavior of polyelectrolyte-surfactant mixtures. However, it is worth noting that the framework obtained on the basis of an SCF approach considered an equilibrium situation which may, in some cases, be far from the real situation appearing in polyelectrolyte-surfactant systems.

Helping Strands: Polyelectrolyte Assists in Surfactant Assembly below Critical Micelle Concentration

Strongly adsorbing polymer/surfactant (P/S) combinations have been proposed for long-term applications such as emulsion stabilization. However, P/S systems are known to exhibit nonequilibrium behavior despite steady-state surface characteristics. This work examines the coadsorption of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide and sodium poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) using oil/water tensiometry, UV absorption, and vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy. To determine which features do not represent true equilibrium, the molecular details of PSS adsorption are compared for fresh and aged samples. At surfactant concentrations concurrent with bulk precipitation, significant differences between fresh and aged samples indicate that the strong initial coadsorption within this system is a nonequilibrium feature. We conclude that the long equilibration timescales arise from the slow assembly of non-adsorbing polyelectrolyte/micelle complexes below the critical micelle concentration. This study resolves a recent debate regarding system equilibria of surface-active P/S combinations at a water surface.

New structural approach to rationalize the foam film stability of oppositely charged polyelectrolyte/surfactant mixtures

Colloids at Fluid Interfaces

Over the last two decades, understanding of the attachment of colloids to fluid interfaces has attracted the interest of researchers from different fields. This is explained by considering the ubiquity of colloidal and interfacial systems in nature and technology. However, to date, the control and tuning of the assembly of colloids at fluid interfaces remain a challenge. This review discusses some of the most fundamental aspects governing the organization of colloidal objects at fluid interfaces, paying special attention to spherical particles. This requires a description of different physicochemical aspects, from the driving force involved in the assembly to its thermodynamic description, and from the interactions involved in the assembly to the dynamics and rheological behavior of particle-laden interfaces.

Network Formation of DNA/Polyelectrolyte Fibrous Aggregates Adsorbed at the Water-Air Interface

It is discovered that complexes of DNA and hydrophobically modified polyelectrolytes form a rigid network of threadlike or fibrous aggregates at the liquid-gas interface whose morphology can dramatically affect the mechanical properties. While mixed solutions of DNA and poly(N,N-diallyl-N,N-dimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) exhibit no notable surface activity, the complexes formed from DNA with poly(N,N-diallyl-N-butyl-N-methylammonium chloride) are surface-active, in contrast to either of the separate components. Further, complexes of DNA and poly(N,N-diallyl-N-hexyl-N-methylammonium chloride) (PDAHMAC) with its longer hydrophobic side chains exhibit pronounced surface activity with values of surface pressures up to 16 mN/m and dynamic surface elasticity up to 58 mN/m. If the PDAHMAC nitrogen to DNA phosphate molar ratio, N/P, is between 0.6 and 3, abrupt compression of the adsorption layer leads unexpectedly to a noticeable decrease of the surface elasticity. The application of imaging techniques reveals that this effect is a consequence of the destruction of a rigid network of threadlike DNA/polyelectrolyte aggregates at the interface. The toroidal aggregates, which are typical for the bulk phase of DNA/PDADMAC solutions in this range of N/P ratios, are not observed in the surface layer. The observed link between the mechanical properties and interfacial morphology of surface-active complexes formed from DNA with hydrophobically modified polyelectrolytes indicates that tuning polyelectrolyte hydrophobicity in these systems may be a means to develop their use in applications ranging from nonviral gene-delivery vehicles to conductive nanowires.

Effect of molecular structure of eco-friendly glycolipid biosurfactants on the adsorption of hair-care conditioning polymers

Pseudo-binary mixtures of different glycolipids, four different rhamnolipids (RL) and an alkyl polyglucoside (APG), with poly(diallyl-dimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) have been studied in relation to their adsorption onto negatively charged surfaces to shed light on the impact of the molecular structure of surfactants from natural sources (instead of synthetic surfactant, such as sodium laureth sulfate) on the adsorption of hair-conditioning polymers. For this purpose, the self-assembly of such mixtures in aqueous solution and their adsorption onto negatively charged surfaces mimicking the negative charge of damaged hair fibres have been studied combining experiments and self-consistent field (SCF) calculations. The results show that the specific physico-chemical properties of the surfactants (charge, number of sugar rings present in surfactant structure and length of the hydrocarbon length) play a main role in the control of the adsorption process, with the adsorption efficiency and hydration being improved in relation to conventional sulfate-based systems for mixtures of PDADMAC and glycolipids with the shortest alkyl chains. SCF calculations and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS) analysis on real hair confirmed such observations. The results allow one to assume that the characteristic of the surfactants, especially rhamnolipids, conditions positively the adsorption potential of polyelectrolytes in these model systems. This study provides important insights on the mechanisms underlying the performance of more complex but eco-friendly washing formulations.

Surfactant-Like Behavior for the Adsorption of Mixtures of a Polycation and Two Different Zwitterionic Surfactants at the Water/Vapor Interface

The bulk and interfacial properties of solutions formed by a polycation (i.e., poly(diallyl-dimethylammonium chloride), PDADMAC) and two different zwitterionic surfactants (i.e., coco-betaine (CB) and cocoamidopropyl-betaine (CAPB)) have been studied. The bulk aggregation of the polyelectrolyte and the two surfactants was analyzed by turbidity and electrophoretic mobility measurements, and the adsorption of the solutions at the fluid interface was studied by surface tension and interfacial dilational rheology measurements. Evidence of polymer-surfactant complex formation in bulk was only found when the number of surfactant molecules was closer to the number of charged monomers in solutions, which suggests that the electrostatic repulsion associated with the presence of a positively charged group in the surfactant hinders the association between PDADMAC and the zwitterionic surfactant for concentrations in which there are no micelles in solution. This lack of interaction in bulk is reflected in the absence of an influence of the polyelectrolyte in the interfacial properties of the mixtures, with the behavior being controlled by the presence of surfactant. This work has evidenced the significant importance of the different interactions involved in the system for controlling the interaction and complexation mechanisms of in polyelectrolyte-surfactant mixtures.

Two Different Scenarios for the Equilibration of Polycation—Anionic Solutions at Water–Vapor Interfaces

The assembly in solution of the cationic polymer poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) and two different anionic surfactants, sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) and sodium N-lauroyl-N-methyltaurate (SLMT), has been studied. Additionally, the adsorption of the formed complexes at the water–vapor interface have been measured to try to shed light on the complex physico-chemical behavior of these systems under conditions close to that used in commercial products. The results show that, independently of the type of surfactant, polyelectrolyte-surfactant interactions lead to the formation of kinetically trapped aggregates in solution. Such aggregates drive the solution to phase separation, even though the complexes should remain undercharged along the whole range of explored compositions. Despite the similarities in the bulk behavior, the equilibration of the interfacial layers formed upon adsorption of kinetically trapped aggregates at the water–vapor interface follows different mechanisms. This was pointed out by surface tension and interfacial dilational rheology measurements, which showed different equilibration mechanisms of the interfacial layer depending on the nature of the surfactant: (i) formation layers with intact aggregates in the PDADMAC-SLMT system, and (ii) dissociation and spreading of kinetically trapped aggregates after their incorporation at the fluid interface for the PDADMAC-SLES one. This evidences the critical impact of the chemical nature of the surfactant in the interfacial properties of these systems. It is expected that this work may contribute to the understanding of the complex interactions involved in this type of system to exploit its behavior for technological purposes.

Multilayers formed by polyelectrolyte-surfactant and related mixtures at the air-water interface

The structure and occurrence of multilayered adsorption at the air-water interface of surfactants in combination with other oppositely charged species is reviewed. The main species that trigger multilayer formation are multiply charged metal, oligo- and polyions. The structures vary from the attachment of one or two more or less complete surfactant bilayers to the initial surfactant monolayer at the air-water interface to the attachment of a greater number of bilayers with a more defective structure. The majority of the wide range of observations of such structures have been made using neutron reflectometry. The possible mechanisms for the attraction of surfactant bilayers to an air-water interface are discussed and particular attention is given to the question of whether these structures are true equilibrium structures.

Molecular Interactions Leading to the Coadsorption of Surfactant Dodecyltrimethylammonium Bromide and Poly(styrenesulfonate) at the Oil/Water Interface

The strong synergistic adsorption of mixed polymer/surfactant (P/S) systems at the oil/water interface shows promise for applications such as oil remediation and emulsion stabilization, especially with respect to the formation of tunable mesoscopic multilayers. There is some evidence that a combination of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) and sodium poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) exhibits the adsorption of a secondary P/S layer, though the structure of this layer has long eluded researchers. The focus of this study is to determine whether the DTAB-assisted adsorption of PSS at the oil/water interface occurs as a single layer or with subsequent multilayers. The study presented uses vibrational sum-frequency spectroscopy and interfacial tensiometry to determine the degree of PSS adsorption and orientation of its charged groups relative to the interface at three representative concentrations of DTAB. At low and intermediate DTAB concentrations, a single mixed DTAB/PSS monolayer adsorbs at the oil/water interface. No PSS adsorbs above the system critical micelle concentration. The interfacial charge is found to be similar to that of P/S complexes solvated in the aqueous solution. The surface adsorbate and P/S complexes in the bulk both exhibit a charge inversion at around the same DTAB concentration. This study demonstrates the importance of techniques which can differentiate between coadsorbing species and calls into question current models of P/S adsorption at an oil/water interface.

CnTAB/polystyrene sulfonate mixtures at air-water interfaces: effects of alkyl chain length on surface activity and charging state

Binding and phase behavior of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes and surfactants with different chain lengths were studied in aqueous bulk solutions and at air-water interfaces. In particular, we have investigated the polyanion poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (NaPSS) and the cationic surfactants dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C₁₂TAB), tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C₁₄TAB) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (C₁₆TAB). In order to reveal the surfactant/polyelectrolyte binding, aggregation and phase separation of the mixtures, we have varied the NaPSS concentration systematically and have kept the surfactant concentration fixed at 1/6 of the respective critical micelle concentration. Information on the behavior in the bulk solution was gained by electrophoretic mobility and turbidity measurements, while the surface properties were studied using surface tension measurements and vibrational sum-frequency generation (SFG). This has enabled us to relate bulk to interfacial properties with respect to the charging state and the surfactants' binding efficiency. We found that the latter two are strongly dependent on the alkyl chain length of the surfactant and that binding is much more efficient as the alkyl chain length of the surfactant increases. This also results in a different phase behavior as shown by turbidity measurements of the bulk solutions. Charge neutral aggregates that are forming in the bulk adsorb onto the air-water interface - an effect that is likely caused by the increased hydrophobicity of C_nTAB/PSS complexes. This conclusion is corroborated by SFG spectroscopy, where we observe a decrease in the intensity of O-H stretching bands, which is indicative of a decrease in surface charging and the formation of interfaces with negligible net charge. Particularly at mixing ratios that are in the equilibrium two-phase region, we observe weak O-H intensities and thus surface charging.

Segregation versus Interdigitation in Highly Dynamic Polymer/Surfactant Layers

Many polymer/surfactant formulations involve a trapped kinetic state that provides some beneficial character to the formulation. However, the vast majority of studies on formulations focus on equilibrium states. Here, nanoscale structures present at dynamic interfaces in the form of air-in-water foams are explored, stabilised by mixtures of commonly used non-ionic, surface active block copolymers (Pluronic^®) and small molecule ionic surfactants (sodium dodecylsulfate, SDS, and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide, C₁₂TAB). Transient foams formed from binary mixtures of these surfactants shows considerable changes in stability which correlate with the strength of the solution interaction which delineate the interfacial structures. Weak solution interactions reflective of distinct coexisting micellar structures in solution lead to segregated layers at the foam interface, whereas strong solution interactions lead to mixed structures both in bulk solution, forming interdigitated layers at the interface.
