Abstract
An achiral Cp*Co(III)-catalyzed enantioselective C-H activation/annulation of chiral sulfoximine-enabled thioamides with ynamides is presented herein. This method successfully synthesizes axially chiral five-membered 2-amidoindenones with good enantiocontrol. Interestingly, the annulation with chiral oxazolidone-containing ynamides could provide a separable mixture of diastereomers (up to ~10 : 1 dr). Moreover, enantiopure sulfoximines could be recovered with ~99 % purity, making this method practical. DFT studies show valuable insight into the mechanism and origin of asymmetric induction.

Abstract
We report a highly cross- and atroposelective coupling between ortho-(chloro)arylphosphine oxides and ortho-(bromo)aryl ethers. This previously unknown asymmetric nickel-catalyzed reaction offers a direct route to highly enantioenriched axially chiral biaryl monophosphine oxides that are difficult to access by other means. These products can be readily reduced to generate chiral MOP-type ligands bearing complex skeletal backbones. The utility of these chiral ligands in asymmetric catalysis is also demonstrated.

Abstract
This review covers the journey of chiral amino acids as ligands in atroposelective C-H bond activation/functionalization via transition metal catalysis. Herein, we intend to demonstrate how these chiral amino acids have evolved and flourished in this stimulating field. Unprotected amino acids, mono-N-protected amino acids, and di-N-protected amino acids have been devised for atroposelective C-H activation. In each section, we have briefly discuss the key successes of amino acids in the atroposelective synthesis of biaryls, heterobiaryls, and non-biaryl atropisomers and their advantages in atroposelective C-H activation.

Abstract
Enantiomers, where chirality arises from restricted rotation around a single bond, are atropisomers. Due to the unique nature of the origins of their chirality, synthetic strategies to access these compounds in an enantioselective manner differ from those used to prepare enantioenriched compounds containing point chirality arising from an unsymmetrically substituted carbon center. In particular stereodynamic transformations, such as dynamic kinetic resolutions, thermodynamic dynamic resolutions, and deracemizations, which rely on the ability to racemize or interconvert enantiomers, are a promising set of transformations to prepare optically pure compounds in the late stage of a synthetic sequence. Translation of these synthetic approaches from compounds with point chirality to atropisomers requires an expanded toolbox for epimerization/racemization and provides an opportunity to develop a new conceptual framework for the enantioselective synthesis of these compounds.

Abstract
ConspectusThe expanding applications of atropisomeric compounds combined with the growing diversity of such chiral molecules translate into an urgent need for innovative synthetic strategies allowing their rapid, efficient, and sustainable synthesis. Recently, the C-H activation approach has provided new opportunities for synthesizing axially chiral compounds. The two complementary approaches allowing implementation of the C-H activation methodology toward the synthesis of the chiral molecules imply either ortho-functionalization of the preexisting prochiral or atropo-unstable biaryl substrates or direct C-H arylation of sterically encumbered aromatics. The first approach required the preinstallation of a directing group on a biaryl precursor, which drastically limits the diversity of thus generated products. To tackle this important synthetic limitation, we have envisioned using a chiral sulfoxide as both directing group and chiral auxiliary. Indeed, in addition to efficiently coordinating the Pd-catalyst thus allowing chiral induction, the sulfoxide moiety can be easily removed, via the sulfoxide/lithium exchange, after the C-H activation step, thus guaranteeing an almost unlimited postdiversification of the atropisomeric products. The efficiency and generality of this concept could be illustrated by developing atropo-diastereoselective oxidative Heck reaction, direct acetoxylation, and iodination, as well as direct arylation. Besides, the synthetic utility of this methodology was demonstrated by designing an expedient synthesis of a direct steganone precursor. This unique transformation also allowed us to build up unprecedented triaryl scaffolds with two perfectly controlled chiral axes, original chiral skeletons for new ligand design. While considering the atroposelective direct arylations, the clear antagonism between the harsh reaction conditions frequently required for the coupling of two sterically hindered compounds and the atropo-stability of the new product, resulted in the scarcity of such transformations. To solve this fundamental challenge, we have focused on the application of a low-valent cobalt catalyst, prompted to catalyze C-H activation of indoles at the C2 position under extremely mild reaction conditions (room temperature). Accordingly, atroposelective C2-arylation of indoles could be achieved using an original carbene ligand and delivering the uncommon atropoisomerically pure indoles in excellent yields and enantioselectivities. Detailed combined experimental and theoretical mechanistic studies shed light on the mechanism of this transformation, providing strong evidence regarding the origin of the enantioselectivity. Finally, the antagonism between steric hindrance required to guarantee the atropo-stability of a molecule and harsh reaction conditions required to couple two partners is a strong limitation not only for the development of atroposelective C-H arylation reaction but also for the development of direct synthesis of the C-N axially chiral compounds. Despite the long history and incredible advances achieved in Ullmann-Goldberg and Buchwald-Hartwig couplings, atroposelective versions of such transformations have remained unprecedented until recently. Our idea to tackle this challenging issue consisted in using hypervalent iodines as highly reactive coupling partners, thus allowing the desired N-arylations to occur at room temperature. This hypothesis could be validated by reporting first atropo-diastereoselective Cu-catalyzed N-arylation, using sulfoxide λ3-iodanes as the coupling partners. Subsequently, the enantioselective version of this atroposelective N-arylation was successfully established by using a chiral Cu-complex bearing a BOX ligand. In conclusion, we report herein designing tailored-made solutions to provide new synthetic strategies to construct the atropisomeric molecules, including biaryls and C-N axially chiral molecules.

Abstract
Thioethers allowed for highly atroposelective C-H olefinations by a palladium/chiral phosphoric acid catalytic system under ambient air. Both N-C and C-C axial chiral (hetero)biaryls were successfully constructed, leading to a broad range of axially chiral N-aryl indoles and biaryls with excellent enantioselectivities up to 99% ee. Experimental and computational studies were conducted to unravel the walking mode for the atroposelective C-H olefination. A plausible chiral induction model for the enantioselectivity-determining step was established by detailed DFT calculations.

Abstract
Herein we report for the first time that the thiosugar moiety can be used both as a directing group enabling the regioselective activation of a C-H bond of biaryl scaffolds and as a chiral source inducing axial chirality. Our approach enables the easy generation of complex thioglycoside atropoisomers, thus paving the way to new products of potential biological interest.

Abstract
The regioselective C-H functionalization of the five-membered ring of the 6,5-fused heterocyclic systems is nowadays well documented due to its high reactivity compared to the six-membered ring. So, developing new procedures of C-H functionalization of the six-membered ring "by thinking out of the box" is extremely challenging, which explains the limited number of reports published to date. This review paper aims to highlight advances achieved in this emerging chemistry research and discusses recently reported methods.

Abstract
Transition-metal-catalyzed enantioselective C-H functionalization has become a powerful strategy for the formation of C-C or C-X bonds, enabling the highly asymmetric synthesis of a wide range of enantioenriched compounds. Atropisomers are widely found in natural products and pharmaceutically relevant molecules, and have also found applications as privileged frameworks for chiral ligands and catalysts. Thus, research into asymmetric routes for the synthesis of atropisomers has garnered great interest in recent years. In this regard, transition-metal-catalyzed enantioselective C-H functionalization has emerged as an atom-economic and efficient strategy toward their synthesis. In this Perspective, the approaches for the synthesis of atropisomers by transition-metal-catalyzed asymmetric C-H functionalization reactions are summarized. The main focus here is on asymmetric catalysis via Pd, Rh, and Ir complexes, which have been the most frequently utilized catalysts among reported enantioselective C-H functionalization reactions. Finally, we discuss limitations on available protocols and give an outlook on possible future avenues of research.

Abstract
Modification of commercially available biaryl monophosphine ligands via ruthenium(II)-catalyzed P(III)-directed-catalyzed ortho C-H secondary alkylation is described. The use of highly ring-strained norbornene as a secondary alkylating reagent is the key to this transformation. A series of highly bulky ligands with a norbornyl group were obtained in excellent yields. The modified ligands with secondary alkyl group outperformed common substituted phosphines in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction at a ppm mole level of Pd catalyst.

Abstract
Abstract
The iridium-catalyzed C-H borylation of diethyl phenylphosphonate results in nonselective mono and bisborylation to afford a near statistical mixture of 3-, 3,5- and 4-boryl substituted aryl phosphonates whereas 3-substituted aryl phosphonates undergo highly regioselective C-H borylation to afford the corresponding meta-phosphonate substituted arylboronic esters as the sole product; the resulting boronic esters were used as nucleophilic reagents in a subsequent palladium-catalyzed Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling to generate a range of biarylmonophosphonates. Gratifyingly, the Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling can be conducted without purifying the boronic ester which greatly simplifies the synthetic procedure.

Abstract
Although asymmetric C-H functionalization has been available for the synthesis of structurally diverse molecules, catalytic dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR) approaches to change racemic stereogenic axes remain synthetic challenges in this field. Here, a concise palladium-catalyzed DKR was combined with C-H functionalization involving olefination and alkynylation for the highly efficient synthesis of non-biaryl-atropisomer-type (NBA) axially chiral oragnosilanes. The chemistry proceeded through two different and distinct DKR: first, an atroposelective C-H olefination or alkynylation produced axially chiral vinylsilanes or alkynylsilanes as a new family of non-biaryl atropisomers (NBA), and second, the extension of this DKR strategy to twofold o,o'-C-H functionalization led to the multifunctional axially chiral organosilicon compounds with up to >99 % ee.

Abstract
Kinetic resolution using biocatalysis has proven to be an excellent complementary technique to traditional asymmetric catalysis for the production of enantioenriched compounds. Resolution using oxidative enzymes produces valuable oxygenated structures for use in synthetic route development. This Minireview focuses on enzymes which catalyse the insertion of an oxygen atom into the substrate and, in so doing, can achieve oxidative kinetic resolution. The Baeyer-Villiger rearrangement, epoxidation, and hydroxylation are included, and biological advancements in enzyme development, and applications of these key enantioenriched intermediates in natural product synthesis are discussed.

Abstract
Transition metal-catalysed functionalizations of inert C-H bonds to construct C-C bonds represent an ideal route in the synthesis of valuable organic molecules. Fine tuning of directing groups, catalysts and ligands has played a crucial role in selective C-H bond (sp2 or sp3) activation. Recent developments in these areas have assured a high level of regioselectivity in C-H olefination reactions. In this review, we have summarized the recent progress in the oxidative olefination of sp2 and sp3 C-H bonds with special emphasis on distal, atroposelective, non-directed sp2 and directed sp3 C-H olefination. The scope, limitation, and mechanism of various transition metal-catalysed olefination reactions have been described briefly.

Abstract
We report herein the Pd-catalyzed oxazoline-directed C-H olefination of the N-arylindole skeleton, affording two diastereomers of axially chiral olefin-oxazoline ligands in a one-step procedure. Modifications at the 3- and 3'-positions were facilely achieved via electrophilic substitution of the indole fragment and subsequent oxazoline-directed C-H amidation or olefination of the arene fragment.

Abstract
With triphenylphosphine oxide serving as both the directing group and the reagent, we have developed a Cp*Ir(III)-catalyzed direct C-H functionalization of triphenylphosphine oxide with 3-diazooxindoles to afford a range of 3-(2-(diphenylphosphoryl)phenyl)indolin-2-one derivatives in moderate to excellent yields. The title products are potentially important building blocks for organic synthesis through various chemical transformations. This protocol is simple and efficient and offers high atom economy with only N2 as the byproduct.

Abstract
Transition metal-catalyzed enantioselective functionalization of C-H bond, the most abundant functionality in organic molecules, has emerged as an expedient synthetic approach to streamline the synthesis of complex chiral molecules. Despite significant progress, traditional directing group-enabled strategies require additional steps for the installation and removal of directing groups from the target molecule. The recently developed asymmetric C-H functionalization using chiral transient directing groups (cTDGs) offers a promising alternative that can circumvent this obstacle and therefore simplify the process. In this Minireview, we briefly discuss the advent and recent advances of this emerging concept, with an emphasis on discussing the creation of various stereogenic centers and the developments of cTDGs. Applications in natural product synthesis and ligand derivatizations are also discussed. We hope this Minireview will highlight the great potential of this strategy and help to inspire further endeavors.

Abstract
Asymmetric pallada-electrocatalyzed C-H olefinations were achieved through the synergistic cooperation with transient directing groups. The electrochemical, atroposelective C-H activations were realized with high position-, diastereo-, and enantio-control under mild reaction conditions to obtain highly enantiomerically-enriched biaryls and fluorinated N-C axially chiral scaffolds. Our strategy provided expedient access to, among others, novel chiral BINOLs, dicarboxylic acids and helicenes of value to asymmetric catalysis. Mechanistic studies by experiments and computation provided key insights into the catalyst's mode of action.

Abstract
The atroposelective synthesis of axially chiral styrenes remains a formidable challenge due to their relatively lower rotational barriers compared to the biaryl atropoisomers. Herein, we describe the construction of axially chiral styrenes through PdII -catalyzed atroposelective C-H olefination, using a bulky amino amide as a transient chiral auxiliary. Various axially chiral styrenes were produced with good yields and high enantioselectivity (up to 95 % yield and 99 % ee). Carboxylic acid derivatives of the resulting axially chiral styrenes showed superior enantiocontrol over the biaryl counterparts in CoIII -catalyzed enantioselective C(sp3 )-H amidation of thioamide. Mechanistic studies suggest that C-H cleavage is the enantioselectivity-determining step.
