Novel One-Dimensional Covalent Organic Framework as a H+ Fluorescent Sensor in Acidic Aqueous Solution

Construction of Benzoxazine-linked One-Dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks Using the Mannich Reaction

Covalent polymerization of organic molecules into crystalline one-dimensional (1D) polymers is effective for achieving desired thermal, optical, and electrical properties, yet it remains a persistent synthetic challenge for their inherent tendency to adopt amorphous or semicrystalline phases. Here we report a strategy to synthesize crystalline 1D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) composing quasi-conjugated chains with benzoxazine linkages via the one-pot Mannich reaction. Through [4+2] and [2+2] type Mannich condensation reactions, we fabricated stoichiometric and sub-stoichiometric 1D covalent polymeric chains, respectively, using doubly and singly linked benzoxazine rings. The validity of their crystal structures has been directly visualized through state-of-the-art cryogenic low-dose electron microscopy techniques. Post-synthetic functionalizations of them with a chiral MacMillan catalyst produce crystalline organic photocatalysts that demonstrated excellent catalytic and recyclable performance in light-driven asymmetric alkylation of aldehydes, affording up to 94 % enantiomeric excess.

Facile synthesis of amino-modified magnetic covalent organic framework for the efficient extraction and determination of anionic azo dyes in carbonated beverages

In this work, a novel magnetic covalent organic framework (COF (TpPa-NH2) @ Fe3O4) was prepared via two step by simple solvent method for the extraction of anionic azo dye residues in food. The as-prepared COF (TpPa-NH2) @ Fe3O4 nanocomposite was characterised by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and vibrating sample magnetometer. Before high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV) determination, it was used as magnetic adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) to extract and pre-concentrate three anionic azo dyes in carbonated beverage samples. The several key extraction and desorption parameters affecting the extraction recovery rate were investigated, including extraction time, pH of the solution, amount of material, adsorption time, elution solvent, pH of elution solvent, type of elution solvent, elution volume and elution time. Under optimised conditions, this method has good linearity between 5 and 500 μg L-1 (correlation coefficient > 0.9986). The limit of detection was 2.3-3.4 μg L-1. The recoveries of the samples were between 87.5 and 96.9%, and the relative standard deviation lower than 4.6%. The developed method has broad application prospects for the analysis of anionic azo dyes in carbonated beverages.

One-Dimensional Covalent Organic Framework-Based Multilevel Memristors for Neuromorphic Computing

Memristors are essential components of neuromorphic systems that mimic the synaptic plasticity observed in biological neurons. In this study, a novel approach employing one-dimensional covalent organic framework (1D COF) films was explored to enhance the performance of memristors. The unique structural and electronic properties of two 1D COF films (COF-4,4'-methylenedianiline (MDA) and COF-4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA)) offer advantages for multilevel resistive switching, which is a key feature in neuromorphic computing applications. By further introducing a TiO2 layer on the COF-ODA film, a built-in electric field between the COF-TiO2 interfaces could be generated, demonstrating the feasibility of utilizing COFs as a platform for constructing memristors with tunable resistive states. The 1D nanochannels of these COF structures contributed to the efficient modulation of electrical conductance, enabling precise control over synaptic weights in neuromorphic circuits. This study also investigated the potential of these COF-based memristors to achieve energy-efficient and high-density memory devices.

Unveiling the Potential of Highly Porous Covalent Organic Frameworks for Water-Jet Rewritable Papers

The massive use of paper has resulted in significant negative impacts on the environment. Fortunately, recent progress has been made in the field of rewritable paper, which has great potential in solving the increasing demand for paper while minimizing its environmental footprint. In this work, we report a green and economic strategy to develop ink-free rewritable paper by introducing hydrochromic covalent organic frameworks (COFs) in paper and using water as the sole trigger. When exposed to water or acidic solvents, two kinds of imino COFs change their colors reversibly from red to black. Additionally, a new visible absorption band appears, indicating that it can be transformed into another structure reversibly. This reversibility may be due to the isomerization from the diiminol to an iminol/cisketoenamine and its inability to doubly tautomerize to a diketoenamine. Specifically, we prepared the rewritable paper by loading these two COFs onto filter paper by using the decompression filtration method. When exposed to water, the paper undergoes a color change from red to black, which shows promising potential for applications in water-jet printing. Additionally, there is no significant performance degradation after 20 uses and 10 days between, further highlighting their potential as rewritable papers. To further improve its uniformity, we take the interface polymerization strategy to yield highly crystalline and more compact membranes, which are then transferred to paper to prepare writable papers. Our research has opened up a way for the application of COFs as a water-based printing material.

Precise Regulation in Chain-Edge Structural Microenvironments of 1D Covalent Organic Frameworks for Photocatalysis

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) constitute a promising research topic for photocatalytic reactions, but the rules and conformational relationships of 1D COFs are poorly defined. Herein, the chain edge structure is designed by precise modulation at the atomic level, and the 1D COFs bonded by C, O, and S elements is directionally prepared for oxygen-tolerant photoinduced electron transfer-atom transfer radical polymerization (PET-ATRP) reactions. It is demonstrated that heteroatom-type chain edge structures (─O─, ─S─) lead to a decrease in intra-plane conjugation, which restricts the effective transport of photogenerated electrons along the direction of the 1D strip. In contrast, the all-carbon type chain edge structure (─C─) with higher intra-plane conjugation not only reduces the energy loss of photoexcited electrons but also enhances the carrier density, which exhibits the optimal photopolymerization performance. This work offers valuable guidance in the exploitation of 1D COFs for high photocatalytic performance. A Visible Light Responsive Smart Covalent Organic Framework with a Bridged Azobenzene Backbone

Condensation of 3,3'-diamino-2,2'-ethylene-bridged azobenzene with 1,2,4,5-tetrakis-(4-formylphenyl) benzene produces a visible light responsive porous 2D covalent organic framework, COF-bAzo-TFPB, with a large surface area, good crystallinity, and thermal and chemical stability. The results demonstrate that the elaborated designed linker can make azo unit on the COF-bAzo-TFPB skeleton undergo reversible photoisomerization. This work expands the application scope of covalent organic frameworks in photo-controlled release, uptake of guest molecules, dynamic photoswitching, and UV-sensitive functions.

Stacked Covalent Organic Ribbons Perpendicular to Graphene Oxide Sheets; a 1D-p-2D Design for Photocatalytic Tandem Reactions

Development of one dimensional covalent organic frameworks (1D-COFs) with potential in light absorption and catalysis is still challenging, due to their rapid interpenetration to form 2D and 3D porous structures. Here we report a successful synthesis of imine-linked 1D covalent organic ribbons (COR), using two simple linear building blocks 1,4-Benzenediamine (Bda) and [2,2'-Bipyridine]-5,5'-dicarbaldehyde (Bpy). The obtained 1D structure with nanorod morphology could keep its physicochemical characteristic properties when it is perpendicular to the surface of graphene oxide (GO) sheets (1D-p-2D structure). Due to an AB π- π stacking and efficient charge transfer between perpendicular 1D COR and GO sheets, the obtained nanocomposite showed strong visible light absorbance (400-700 nm) with coefficient of 4.400 M-1  cm-1 and decreased recombination rate of photogenerated reactive species by 92 %. The strategy of 1D-p-2D light driven system greatly enhanced the photocatalytic activity in practical applications such as both oxidation and hydrogenation tandem reactions to a rate constant of higher than 0.02 min-1 . This study presents the first case of 1D covalent organic polymers grown perpendicularly on a carbon-based layer for boosting electron mobility through the junction between the two components.

Donor-Acceptor Interactions Enhanced Colorimetric Sensors for Both Acid and Base Vapor Based on Two-Dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks

Due to the high surface area and uniform porosity of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), they exhibit superior properties in capturing and detecting even trace amounts of gases in the air. However, the COFs materials that possess dual detected functionality are still less reported. Here, an imine-based COF containing thiophene as a donor and triazine as an acceptor to form spatial-distribution-defined D-A structures was prepared. D-A system between thiophene and triazine facilitates the charge transfer process during the protonation process of the imine and the triazine units. The obtained COF exhibits simultaneous sensing ability toward both acidic and alkaline vapors with obvious colorimetric sensing functionality.

Morphology regulation of isomeric covalent organic frameworks for high selective light scattering detection of lead

Isomerism is an essential and ubiquitous phenomenon in organic chemistry, yet it is rarely observed in covalent organic frameworks (COFs). Herein, we synthesized two framework-isomeric COFs (BATD-Dma-COF-K and BATD-Dma-COF-R) and found for the first time that the light scattering signal of the COFs can be used for the analytical detection of lead ion. By using solvothermal and room temperature solvent synthesis methods, controlling different synthesis conditions, and introducing regulators to increase the energy difference between different products, the product with the lowest energy could be synthesized under specific conditions. This method could control the morphology of the synthesized COF and realize the precise synthesis of framework-isomeric COF by changing the experimental conditions. The structures of the two framework-isomeric COFs were characterized and confirmed by a series of analytical methods. Based on the principle that lead ions coordinate with N and O on the surface of two skeletal isomers BATD-Dma-COFs to enhance the light scattering signal of the COFs, a light scattering probe was developed by BATD-Dma-COF for the detection of metal lead ion in water samples. Lead ion concentration in the range from 2.0 to 250.0 μM had a good linear relationship with the light scattering intensity increase of the COFs with detection limit as low as 0.8397 μM by BATD-Dma-COF-K and 0.9207 μM by BATD-Dma-COF-R.

Ratiometric Fluorescent Detection of Chromium(III) Based on One-Dimensional Imine-Linked Covalent Organic Framework

Chromium (Cr3+) as a highly toxic pollutant has aroused much attention due to its wide industrial applications. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been considered as one of the most promising metal ion sensors due to their open pore channels and abundant adsorption sites. Herein, a novel luminescent one-dimensional COF (Py-An COF) was constructed by the condensation of 5'-(anthracen-9-yl)-[1,1':3',1″-terphenyl]-4,4″-dicarbaldehyde (An-2CHO) and 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(p-aminophenyl) pyrene (PyTTA). The resulting COF showed high crystallinity, comparative high surface area, and good thermal stability, which can be utilized for Cr3+ fluorescent sensors with high sensitivity and selectivity. Furthermore, the coordination between Schiff-base N atoms and Cr3+ inhibits the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) process, resulting in the enhanced fluorescence intensity of chromophores (436 nm) and decreased the fluorescence intensity of Py-An COF (512 nm) simultaneously, which eventually realizes a highly efficient ratiometric fluorescent sensor for trace Cr3+. Compared with other porous fluorescent materials, Py-An COF possesses a lower detection limit, higher sensitivity, and better selectivity. This work provides strategic guidance for the design of COFs as ratiometric fluorescence sensors.

Revolutionizing the structural design and determination of covalent-organic frameworks: principles, methods, and techniques

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) represent an important class of crystalline porous materials with designable structures and functions. The interconnected organic monomers, featuring pre-designed symmetries and connectivities, dictate the structures of COFs, endowing them with high thermal and chemical stability, large surface area, and tunable micropores. Furthermore, by utilizing pre-functionalization or post-synthetic functionalization strategies, COFs can acquire multifunctionalities, leading to their versatile applications in gas separation/storage, catalysis, and optoelectronic devices. Our review provides a comprehensive account of the latest advancements in the principles, methods, and techniques for structural design and determination of COFs. These cutting-edge approaches enable the rational design and precise elucidation of COF structures, addressing fundamental physicochemical challenges associated with host-guest interactions, topological transformations, network interpenetration, and defect-mediated catalysis.

Water-Mediated Hydrogen Bond Network Drives Highly Crystalline Structure Formation of Crown Ether-Based Covalent Organic Framework for Sr Adsorption

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with crown ether units have drawn great attention due to their potential applications in adsorption, catalysis, and sensing. However, employing crown ethers to construct COFs is still challenging in light of the flexible nature of macrocycles. Here, a highly crystalline one-dimensional covalent organic framework (1D-18C6-COF) with crown ether units on the ribbon edge was synthesized. The water-mediated hydrogen bond network and π-π stacking hold the 1D COF ribbons together. The combination of experimental and DFT studies demonstrated that the hydrogen bond network plays a crucial role in the structure crystallinity. The 1D-18C6-COF was applied as an adsorbent for strontium, and it exhibited rapid kinetics with good selectivity. In the competitive adsorption experiment, a separation factor of 1900 was achieved, representing one of the largest values for cesium/strontium separation. This work provides new insights into the design and functional exploration of crystalline COFs with flexible units.

A Halogen-Bonded Organic Framework (XOF) Emissive Cocrystal for Acid Vapor and Explosive Sensing, and Iodine Capture

There is a strong and urgent need for efficient materials that can capture radioactive iodine atoms from nuclear waste. This work presents a novel strategy to develop porous materials for iodine capture by employing halogen bonding, mechanochemistry and crystal engineering. 3D halogen-bonded organic frameworks (XOFs) with guest-accessible permanent pores are exciting targets in crystal engineering for developing functional materials, and this work reports the first example of such a structure. The new-found XOF, namely TIEPE-DABCO, exhibits enhanced emission in the solid state and turn-off emission sensing of acid vapors and explosives like picric acid in nanomolar quantity. TIEPE-DABCO captures iodine from the gas phase (3.23 g g-1 at 75 °C and 1.40 g g-1 at rt), organic solvents (2.1 g g-1 ), and aqueous solutions (1.8 g g-1 in the pH range of 3-8); the latter with fast kinetics. The captured iodine can be retained for more than 7 days without any leaching, but readily released using methanol, when required. TIEPE-DABCO can be recycled for iodine capture several times without any loss of storage capacity. The results presented in this work demonstrate the potential of mechanochemical cocrystal engineering with halogen bonding as an approach to develop porous materials for iodine capture and sensing.

Saturated Linkers in Two-Dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks Boost Their Luminescence

The development of highly luminescent two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (COFs) for sensing applications remains challenging. To suppress commonly observed photoluminescence quenching of COFs, we propose a strategy involving interrupting the intralayer conjugation and interlayer interactions using cyclohexane as the linker unit. By variation of the building block structures, imine-bonded COFs with various topologies and porosities are obtained. Experimental and theoretical analyses of these COFs disclose high crystallinity and large interlayer distances, demonstrating enhanced emission with record-high photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 57% in the solid state. The resulting cyclohexane-linked COF also exhibits excellent sensing performance for the trace recognition of Fe³⁺ ions, explosive and toxic picric acid, and phenyl glyoxylic acid as metabolites. These findings inspire a facile and general strategy to develop highly emissive imine-bonded COFs for detecting various molecules.

One-Dimensional Covalent Organic Framework as High-Performance Cathode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as a new class of cathode materials for energy storage in recent years. However, they are limited to two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D) framework structures. Herein, this work reports designed synthesis of a redox-active one-dimensional (1D) COF and its composites with 1D carbon nanotubes (CNTs) via in situ growth. Used as cathode materials for Li-ion batteries, the 1D COF@CNT composites with unique dendritic core-shell structure can provide abundant and easily accessible redox-active sites, which contribute to improve diffusion rate of lithium ions and the corresponding specific capacity. This synergistic structural design enables excellent electrochemical performance of the cathodes, giving rise to 95% utilization of redox-active sites, high rate capability (81% capacity retention at 10 C), and long cycling stability (86% retention after 600 cycles at 5 C). As the first example to explore the application of 1D COFs in the field of energy storage, this study demonstrates the great potential of this novel type of linear crystalline porous polymers in battery technologies.

Design strategies of covalent organic framework-based electrodes for supercapacitor application

Supercapacitors (SCs) have been recognized as a promising electrochemical energy storage (EES) device, thanks to their high-power density, long lifespan, fast charge-discharge capability, and eco-friendliness. The breakthrough of electrode materials that determine the electrochemical performance of SCs is urgently desired. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), an emerging and burgeoning class of crystalline porous polymeric materials, have been found to have huge potential for application in EES devices by virtue of their unique properties including atomically adjustable structures, robust and tunable skeletons, well-defined and open channels, high surface areas, etc. In this feature article, we aim at summarizing the design strategies of COF-based electrode materials for SCs based on the representative advances. The current challenges and future perspectives of COFs for SC application are highlighted as well.

Cellulose-Based Fluorescent Material for Extreme pH Sensing and Smart Printing Applications

Environment-responsive fluorescence materials are being widely investigated for instrument-free determination of various environmental factors. However, developing an eco-friendly cellulose-based fluorescent pH sensor for sensing extreme acidity and alkalinity is still challenging. Herein, a highly fluorescent and multifunctional material is developed from biopolymer-based cellulose acetate. A biopolymer-based structure containing responsive functional groups such as -C═O and -NH is constructed by chemically bonding 5-amino-2,3-dihydrophthalazine-1,4-dione (luminol) onto cellulose acetate using 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) as a cross-linking agent. The prepared material (Lum-MDI-CA) is characterized by UV-vis, Fourier transform infrared, ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR spectroscopies, and fluorescence techniques. The material exhibits excellent aqua blue fluorescence and demonstrates extreme pH sensing applications. Interesting results are further revealed after adding a pH-unresponsive dye such as MTPP as the reference to develop the ratiometric method. The ratiometric system clearly differentiates the extreme acidic pH 1 from pH 2 and extreme alkaline pH 12, 13, and 14 by visual and fluorescence color change response under a narrow pH range. In addition, the material is fabricated into transparent flexible fluorescent films which demonstrate an outstanding UV shielding, security printing, and haze properties for smart food packaging and printing applications.

Construction of Covalent Organic Frameworks via Multicomponent Reactions

Multicomponent reactions (MCRs) combine at least three reactants to afford the desired product in a highly atom-economic way and are therefore viewed as efficient one-pot combinatorial synthesis tools allowing one to significantly boost molecular complexity and diversity. Nowadays, MCRs are no longer confined to organic synthesis and have found applications in materials chemistry. In particular, MCRs can be used to prepare covalent organic frameworks (COFs), which are crystalline porous materials assembled from organic monomers and exhibit a broad range of properties and applications. This synthetic approach retains the advantages of small-molecule MCRs, not only strengthening the skeletal robustness of COFs, but also providing additional driving forces for their crystallization, and has been used to prepare a series of robust COFs with diverse applications. The present perspective article provides the general background for MCRs, discusses the types of MCRs employed for COF synthesis to date, and addresses the related critical challenges and future perspectives to inspire the MCR-based design of new robust COFs and promote further progress in this emerging field.

Reticular Synthesis of One-Dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks with 4-c sql Topology for Enhanced Fluorescence Emission

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been extensively investigated due to their unique structure, porosity, and functionality. However, at the topological level, COFs remain as two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D) structures, while COFs with one-dimensional (1D) topology have not been systematically explored. In this work, we proposed a synthetic strategy for the construction of 1D-COFs based on non-linear edges and suitable high-symmetry vertices. Compared with their 2D-COFs counterparts, the 1D-COFs with AIEgens located at the vertex of the frame exhibited enhanced fluorescence. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the dimensional-induced rotation restriction (DIRR) effect could spontaneously introduce additional non-covalent interactions between the strip frames, which could substantially diminish non-radiative transitions. This work also provides protocols for the design of 1D-COFs and a guidance scheme for the synthesis of emitting COFs.

Metalated covalent organic frameworks: from synthetic strategies to diverse applications

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of organic crystalline porous materials discovered in the early 21st century that have become an attractive class of emerging materials due to their high crystallinity, intrinsic porosity, structural regularity, diverse functionality, design flexibility, and outstanding stability. However, many chemical and physical properties strongly depend on the presence of metal ions in materials for advanced applications, but metal-free COFs do not have these properties and are therefore excluded from such applications. Metalated COFs formed by combining COFs with metal ions, while retaining the advantages of COFs, have additional intriguing properties and applications, and have attracted considerable attention over the past decade. This review presents all aspects of metalated COFs, from synthetic strategies to various applications, in the hope of promoting the continued development of this young field.

Rigid Schiff Base Complex Supermolecular Aggregates as a High-Performance pH Probe: Study on the Enhancement of the Aggregation-Caused Quenching (ACQ) Effect via the Substitution of Halogen Atoms

Optical signals of pH probes mainly driven from the formation or rupture of covalent bonds, whereas the changes in covalent bonds usually require higher chemical driving forces, resulting in limited sensitivity and reversibility of the probes. The exploration of high-performance pH probes has been a subject of intense investigation. Herein, a new pH probe has been developed, with optical property investigation suggesting the probe has excellent signal-to-noise ratio, and fluorescence intensity shows exponential growth, combined with a visible color change, as pH increased from 5.1 to 6.0; Moreover, the probe has outstanding stability and reversibility, with more than 90% of the initial signal intensity remaining after 30 cycles. In order to better understand the special fluorescence behavior of the reported probe, the non-halogenated isomer is introduced for comparison, combined with the results of structural analysis, quantitative calculation and optical experiments, and the possible mechanism of the special supramolecular aggregation-caused quenching effect induced by the halogen atom is discussed.

Covalent Organic Frameworks for Chemical and Biological Sensing

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of crystalline porous organic polymers with polygonal porosity and highly ordered structures. The most prominent feature of the COFs is their excellent crystallinity and highly ordered modifiable one-dimensional pores. Since the first report of them in 2005, COFs with various structures were successfully synthesized and their applications in a wide range of fields including gas storage, pollution removal, catalysis, and optoelectronics explored. In the meantime, COFs also exhibited good performance in chemical and biological sensing, because their highly ordered modifiable pores allowed the selective adsorption of the analytes, and the interaction between the analytes and the COFs’ skeletons may lead to a detectable change in the optical or electrical properties of the COFs. In this review, we firstly demonstrate the basic principles of COFs-based chemical and biological sensing, then briefly summarize the applications of COFs in sensing some substances of practical value, including some gases, ions, organic compounds, and biomolecules. Finally, we discuss the trends and the challenges of COFs-based chemical and biological sensing.

Porous organic polymers as a platform for sensing applications

Sensing analysis is significantly important for human health and environmental safety, and has gained increasing concern. As a promising material, porous organic polymers (POPs) have drawn widespread attention due to the availability of plentiful building blocks and their tunable structures, porosity and functions. Moreover, the permanent porous nature could provide a micro-environment to interact with guest molecules, rendering POPs attractive for application in the sensing field. In this review, we give a comprehensive overview of POPs as a platform for sensing applications. POP-based sensors are mainly divided into five categories, including fluorescence turn-on sensors, fluorescence turn-off sensors, ratiometric fluorescent sensors, colorimetric sensors and chemiresistive sensors, and their various sensing applications in detecting explosives, metal ions, anions, small molecules, biological molecules, pH changes, enantiomers, latent fingerprints and thermosensation are summarized. The different structure-based POPs and their corresponding synthetic strategies as well as the related sensing mechanisms mainly including energy transfer, donor-acceptor electron transfer, absorption competition quenching and inner filter effect are also involved in the discussion. Finally, the future outlook and perspective are addressed briefly.

Enhanced surface area and reduced pore collapse of methylated, imine-linked covalent organic frameworks

Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) are thermally and chemically stable, nanoporous materials with high surface areas, making them interesting for a large variety of applications including energy storage, gas separation, catalysis and chemical sensing. However, pore blocking and pore collapse may limit their performance. Reducing the capillary forces by using solvents with low surface tension, like supercritical CO₂, for activation, and the introduction of bulky isopropyl/methoxy groups were found to reduce pore collapse. Herein, we present an easy-to-use alternative that involves the combination of a new, methylated building block (2,4,6-trimethylbenzene-1,3,5-tricarbaldehyde, Me₃TFB) with vacuum drying. Condensation of Me₃TFB with 1,4-phenylenediamine (PA) or benzidine (BD) resulted in imine-linked 2D COFs (Me₃TFB-PA and Me₃TFB-BD) with higher degrees of crystallinity and higher BET surface areas compared to their non-methylated counterparts (TFB-PA and TFB-BD). This was rationalized by density functional theory computations. Additionally, the methylated COFs are less prone to pore collapse when subjected to vacuum drying and their BET surface area was found to remain stable for at least four weeks. Within the context of their applicability as sensors, we also studied the influence of hydrochloric acid vapour on the optical and structural properties of all COFs. Upon acid exposure their colour and absorbance spectra changed, making them indeed suitable for acid detection. Infrared spectroscopy revealed that the colour change is likely attributed to the cleavage of imine bonds, which are only partially restored after ammonia exposure. While this limits their application as reusable sensors, our work presents a facile method to increase the robustness of commonly known COFs.

Facile preparation of core-shell magnetic organic covalent framework via self-polymerization of two-in-one strategy as a magnetic solid-phase extraction adsorbent for determination of Rhodamine B in food samples

The monomer of two-in-one molecular design strategy (i.e., A₂B₂ type monomer) 1,6-bis(4-formylphenyl)-3,8-bis((4-aminophenyl) ethynyl)) pyrene (BFBAEPy) was self-polymerized and coated on the modified Fe₃O₄ surface to synthesize a magnetic covalent organic framework (Fe₃O₄@COF) nanocomposite with a core-shell structure. Before high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV) determination, Fe₃O₄@COF was used as a magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) adsorbent to enrich Rhodamine B (RhB) illegally added to Chili powder and Chinese prickly ash. It had a large specific surface area and suitable pore size, which promoted the efficient adsorption of RhB dye and eliminated the interference of the matrix. Several key parameters affecting the extraction recovery rate were investigated, including adsorption capacity, adsorption time, pH, ionic strength, elution solvent, elution volume and elution time. Under the best optimized conditions, within the linear detection range of 0.05-5 µg/mL for RhB with the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.0038 µg/mL, excellent linearity (correlation coefficient R²=0.9997), and good repeatability (relative standard deviations RSD%< 3.8%), satisfactory extraction recovery rate (91.7%-97.5%). Therefore, the application of the established method to the detection of RhB in food samples has bright prospects.

Synthesis and Acid-Responsive Properties of a Highly Porous Vinylene-Linked Covalent Organic Framework

The recently emerging vinylene-linked covalent organic frameworks (VCOFs) stand out from other COFs with exceptional chemical stability and favorable light-emitting properties, promising sensing applications for acids/bases or in strong acidic/basic conditions. Here we systematically investigated the reversible color and fluorescent response of a VCOF functionalized with pyridyl groups to acids/pH. The COF was synthesized with a record surface area for VCOFs and shows reversible hydrochromic and acidochromic behaviors and concomitant fluorescence quenching. The mechanisms were probed with systematical experimental comparison with relevant COFs and model molecules in combination with orbital analysis. The response is related to significant electronic changes in the ground and photoexcited states as a result of protonation or hydrogen bonding at pyridyl sites. The COF in aqueous dispersion displays a reversible fluorescence transition with pH change, which follows the Hill equation for multisite protonation. The COF-modified test paper shows immediate and remarkable color change and fluorescence turn-off/on when alternately exposed to HCl and NH₃ gases. The work illustrates the great potential of developing highly robust sensory COFs through the vinylene approach.

Thiol functionalized covalent organic framework for highly selective enrichment and detection of mercury by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry

A spherical thiol-functionalized covalent organic framework (COF-SH) was designed via a facile thiol-yne click reaction of a alkynyl-terminated COF and pentaerythritol tetra(3-mercaptopropionate). The COF-SH was explored as a new adsorbent for the selective enrichment of Hg2+. The as-prepared COF-SH exhibited a uniform mesoporous structure, a high abundance of binding sites, and good chemical stability, which endow it with great performance for the adsorption of Hg2+ and its corresponding maximum adsorption capacity was up to 617.3 mg g-1. Furthermore, the adsorption behavior of Hg2+ on the COF-SH wasin good agreement with the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models. The influences of adsorbent dosage, pH, selectivity, and reusability of the COF-SH on Hg2+ adsorption were also investigated. Besides this, the COF-SH showed high selectivity towards Hg2+ even in the presence of a high concentration of K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+ and Zn2+ metal ions. Using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS), the corresponding limit of detection (LOD) of Hg2+ was determined at very low concentrations of 80 pg mL-1 (equal to 396 amoL μL-1). In addition, the COF-SH was successfully applied to rapidly enrich and sensitively detect Hg2+ in industrial sewage, with recoveries in the range of 101.8-103.4%, demonstrating the promising potential of COF-SH as an effective adsorbent for use in environmental sample pretreatment.

Covalent Organic Polymers and Frameworks for Fluorescence-Based Sensors

Following the advancements and diversification in synthetic strategies for porous covalent materials in the literature, the materials science community started to investigate the performance of covalent organic polymers (COPs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) in applications that require large surface areas for interaction with other molecules, chemical stability, and insolubility. Sensorics is an area where COPs and COFs have demonstrated immense potential and achieved high levels of sensitivity and selectivity on account of their tunable structures. In this review, we focus on those covalent polymeric systems that use fluorescence spectroscopy as a method of detection. After briefly reviewing the physical basis of fluorescence-based sensors, we delve into various kinds of analytes that have been explored with COPs and COFs, namely, heavy metal ions, explosives, biological molecules, amines, pH, volatile organic compounds and solvents, iodine, enantiomers, gases, and anions. Throughout this work, we discuss the mechanisms involved in each sensing application and aim to quantify the potency of the discussed sensors by providing limits of detection and quenching constants when available. This review concludes with a summary of the surveyed literature and raises a few concerns that should be addressed in the future development of COP and COF fluorescence-based sensors.
