Abstract
To fulfil the demands of rapid proliferation, tumour cells undergo significant metabolic alterations. Suppression of hyperactivated metabolism has been proven to counteract tumour growth. However, whether the reactivation of downregulated metabolic pathways has therapeutic effects remains unexplored. Here we report a nutrient-based metabolic reactivation strategy for effective melanoma treatment. L-Tyrosine-oleylamine nanomicelles (MTyr-OANPs) were constructed for targeted supplementation of tyrosine to reactivate melanogenesis in melanoma cells. We found that reactivation of melanogenesis using MTyr-OANPs significantly impeded the proliferation of melanoma cells, primarily through the inhibition of glycolysis. Furthermore, leveraging melanin as a natural photothermal reagent for photothermal therapy, we demonstrated the complete eradication of tumours in B16F10 melanoma-bearing mice through treatment with MTyr-OANPs and photothermal therapy. Our strategy for metabolism activation-based tumour treatment suggests specific nutrients as potent activators of metabolic pathways.

Abstract
This study employs simple approaches involving melt blending and Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printing to fabricate a light-responsive shape memory composite. And, this composite material is used for the design of optically controlled devices that mimics the blooming of flowers in the natural environment. The composite material utilizes poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) as the matrix, with lignin (L) serving as a functional filler. The analysis indicates that, due to the excellent photothermal conversion efficiency of lignin, under constant illumination the shape memory materials heat up to 50 °C within 40 s, the shape recovery rate exceeds 95.06 %. Lignin ameliorated the rheological deficiencies of TPU, with the composite material viscosity decreasing from 103 to 101 at an angular frequency of 100 rad/s, enhancing its compatibility with FDM processes. This research offers greater economic efficiency compared to conventional light-responsive materials and a simpler production method.

Abstract
In the face of the challenges posed by global warming, traditional methods of building heating and cooling contribute significantly to electricity and coal consumption, thereby emitting considerable amounts of greenhouse gases. Here, a dual-mode thermal management structural material is created by processing sustainable cellulose and lignin derived from wood waste into gels, followed by lamination. The cellulose surface of the material exhibits the ability to scatter solar radiation backward while emitting strongly in the mid-infrared wavelengths, whereas the lignin surface absorbs visible and near-infrared light, primarily releasing energy through non-radiative transitions. Consequently, the material can achieve sub-ambient radiative cooling of 6 °C and solar heating of 27.5 °C during the daytime by simply flipping its orientation. This pioneering material showcases the potential to significantly reduce cooling energy consumption by an average of 18% and heating energy consumption by 42%. Moreover, the integration of a thermal-electric generator within the dual-layer structure optimally utilizes the temperature differential between the two layers, converting it into electrical power. Notably, the dual-mode thermal management structural material exhibits impressive mechanical strength, boasting a flexural strength of 102 MPa, surpassing that of natural wood by over 4.8 times. With its dual-mode functionality and embedded thermal-electric generator, this material represents a crucial step towards achieving both thermal comfort and energy autonomy in sustainable building practices, thereby contributing to a more environmentally friendly and efficient future.

Abstract
Polymers may suffer from sudden mechanical damages during long-term use under various harsh operating environments. Rapid and real-time self-healing will extend their service life, which is particularly attractive in the context of circular economy. In this work, a lignin cluster polymerization strategy (LCPS) was designed to prepare a series of lignin functionalized polyolefin composites with excellent mechanical properties through nickel catalyzed copolymerization of ethylene and lignin cluster monomers. These composites can achieve rapid self-healing within 30 seconds under a variety of extreme usage environments (underwater, seawater, extremely low temperatures as low as -60 °C, organic solvents, acid/alkali solvents, etc.), which is of great significance for real-time self-healing of sudden mechanical damage. More importantly, the dynamic cross-linking network within these composites enable great re-processability and amazing sealing performances.

Abstract
Eumelanins play a crucial role as photoprotective agents for living organisms, yet the nature of the stationary and transient species involved in the light absorption and deactivation processes remains controversial. Moreover, the critical sub-100 fs time scale, which is key to the characterization of the primary excited species, has remained unexplored. Here, we study the eumelanin analogue polydopamine (PDA) and employ a combination of steady-state and transient optical spectroscopies to reveal the presence of spectrally broad coupled electronic transitions with, at least partial, charge-transfer (CT) character. We monitor the CT state dynamics using tunable sub-20 fs pulses. We find that high photon energy excitation results in accelerated (sub-20 fs) CT formation times while activating pathways, which lead to long-lived (≫1 ns), possibly reactive CT species. On the other hand, visible light excitation results in a slower (≈45 fs) formation of bound CT states, which, however, recombine on the ultrafast sub-2 ps time scale.

Abstract
Solar interfacial evaporation is the most promising route for desalination because it is highly efficient, affordable and offers green energy. Polyurethane foam (PUF) is an ideal substrate material for efficient solar water evaporation because of its low thermal conductivity, affordability, and high efficiency for continuous water transport. However, PUF exhibits poor mechanical properties after water absorption and expansion, and lacks the photothermal conversion effect. In this study, biorefinery lignin with efficient photothermal properties was introduced to prepare functional lignin-based PUF (LPUF), and the relationship between the molecular structure of fractioned lignin and the solar water evaporation performance was systematically investigated. The addition of lignin effectively enhanced the mechanical properties of LPUF after water absorption and swelling, and imparted the foam with a photothermal conversion effect. The water evaporation rate of LPUF was as high as 2.58 kg m-2 h-1 and could be further improved to more than 3.0 kg m-2 h-1 after loading polyaniline (PANI) on the surface of LPUF. LPUF-PANI exerted an excellent purification effect on dye wastewater with outstanding long-term stability, providing a potential solution for ecofriendly and sustainable economic production of fresh water. This study broadens the effective utilization of LPUF bulk materials in the fields of energy and environment.

Abstract
In this study, the photothermal performance of lignin-based nanospheres was investigated. Subsequently, a photothermal actuator was prepared using lignin-based carbon nanospheres (LCNSs). The results demonstrated that LCNSs exhibited an impressive photothermal conversion efficiency of up to 83.8%. This extreme efficiency significantly surpasses that of lignin nanospheres (LNSs) and covalently stabilized LNSs (HT-LNSs). As a structural material, a hydrophobic coating was effectively engineered by LCNSs on the filter paper, achieving a water contact angle of 151.9° ± 4.6°, while maintaining excellent photothermal effects (with a temperature increment from room temperature to 138 °C in 2 s). When employing hydrophobic filter paper as the substrate for the photothermaldriven actuator, under the influence of a 1.0 W/cm2 power-density NIR laser, the material exhibited outstanding photothermal actuation, achieving speeds up to 16.4 mm/s. In addition, the direction of motion of the actuator can be adjusted in accordance with the location of the NIR light irradiation. This study offers valuable perspectives on the application of LNSs for highvalue applications and the development of innovative photothermal-driven actuators.

Abstract
Photocured room temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials hold great potential for practical applications but are scarcely reported. Here, we develop photocured RTP materials (P-Lig) using a combination of lignosulfonate, acrylamide, and ionic liquid (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide). With this design, lignosulfonate simultaneously serves as RTP chromophore and photoinitiator. Specifically, lignosulfonate in the ionic liquid generates radicals to polymerize the acrylamide upon UV irradiation. The resulting lignosulfonate is automatically confined in an as-formed crosslinked matrix to provide RTP. As such RTP with an emission lifetime of ~110 ms is observed from the confined lignosulfonate in P-Lig. Additionally, energy transfer occur between P-Lig and Rhodamine B (RhB), triggering red afterglow emission when P-Lig is in situ loaded with RhB (P-Lig/RhB). As a demonstration of potential applications, the P-Lig and P-Lig/RhB are used as photocured RTP coatings and RTP inks for fabricating 3D materials and for information encryption.

Abstract
With the increased environmental issues, advanced high-performance and multifunctional polymeric materials derived from biomass have tremendous attention due to the great potential to replace their traditional petroleum-based counterparts. In this work, a series of lignin graft copolymers, lignin-graft-poly(n-butyl acrylate-co-acrylic acid) (Lig-g-P(BA-co-AA)), were rationally prepared via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. These lignin-based copolymers demonstrate good thermal stability and tunable glass transition temperature (Tg) values. The mechanical performance, including tensile strength, extensibility, Young's modulus, and toughness can be facilely adjusted by the BA/AA feed ratio and lignin content during polymerization. Owing to the extraordinary photothermal conversion ability of lignin, the Lig-B550 copolymer, containing 11.8 wt% lignin content, shows excellent stimulus-healing behavior within 1 min with a 97.1 % healing efficiency under near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation. Moreover, the Lig-g-P(BA-co-AA) copolymers exhibit remarkable adhesion property, broadening their potential applications in the adhesive area. This grafting strategy is versatile and efficient, conferring the resultant lignin-based composite elastomers with dramatically enhanced mechanical properties and unprecedented photothermal behavior, which can inspire the further development of strong lignin-based sustainable elastomers.

The plasticizer enhances the dispersion of lignin and the molecular mobility of the PLA chains. The good dispersion of lignin particles within the structure and the reduction of chemical cross-linking promote the local relaxation of the polymer chains. The good local relaxation of the polymer chains and the high flexibility allow to obtain a better integration between the printed layers with good printability. This research demonstrates the promising potential of this composite system for sustainable manufacturing and provides insights into novel material design for high-value applications of lignin.

Abstract
Molecular carbons (MCs) are molecular cutouts of carbon materials. Doping with heteroatoms and constructing open-shell structures are two powerful approaches to achieve unexpected and unique properties of MCs. Herein, we disclose a new strategy to design open-shell boron-doped MCs (BMCs), namely by pentagon-fusion of an organoborane π-system. We synthesized two diradicaloid BMC molecules that feature C24 B and C38 B π-skeletons containing a pentagonal ring. A thorough investigation reveals that such pentagon-fusion not only leads to their local antiaromaticity, but also incorporates an internal quinoidal substructure and thereby induces open-shell singlet diradical states. Moreover, their fully fused structures enable efficient π conjugation, which is expanded over the whole frameworks. Consequently, some intriguing physical properties are achieved, such as narrow energy gaps, very broad light absorptions, and superior photothermal capability, along with excellent photostability. Notably, the solid of the C38 B molecule exhibits absorption that covers the range of 300-1200 nm and an efficiency of 93.5 % for solar-driven water evaporation, thus demonstrating the potential of diradicaloid BMCs as high-performance organic photothermal materials.

Abstract
Organic phase change materials (PCMs) are promising to utilize thermal energy from solar radiation for photothermal energy conversion. However, the issues of poor photo absorption and liquid leakage greatly restrict their practical application. Herein, a sustainable porous scaffold comprising periodate oxidized wood (POW) as the supporting material and in situ retains lignin as the light-absorber dopant are demonstrated. The π-π stacking ability of lignin molecules endows the retained lignin with efficient photonic energy harvesting characteristics for fast thermal conductivity to reach a higher maximal energy storage volume. The inherently porous structure of the POW scaffold enables excellent shape-stability, which bypasses the liquid leakage problem. The resulting POW/PCM composites exhibit superior comprehensive performance, including enhanced light absorption capacity, high photothermal conversion efficiency (≈86.7%), and high latent heat of 151 J g-1 . Furthermore, the POW/PCM composites also possess the ability to maintain a relatively constant indoor temperature when fixed atop the model house roof, showing great potential for their practical applications in the thermal regulation of intelligent buildings. This work not only paves a new way to obtain sustainable and effective porous scaffolds for sufficient photothermal energy conversion but also provides more possibilities for their practical application in the future.

Abstract
There is an urgent need for antimicrobial films based on sustainable resources and production methods. In this study, we present a bio-based nanocomposite film composed of chitosan (∼60 wt %), lignin nanoparticles (LNPs, ∼40 wt %), a small amount of glutaraldehyde (1.5 wt %), and a trace level of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs, 0.072 wt %). The uniform dispersion with LNPs prevented aggregation of metallic silver, resulting in small (diameter 3.3 nm) AgNPs. The nanocomposite film absorbs 89% of radiation across the entire solar spectrum and exhibits a remarkable photothermally triggered antibacterial effect, which is further enhanced by the dark color of lignin. Under simulated solar light illumination, the nanocomposite films demonstrated a significant reduction in viable Escherichia coli count compared to control scenarios. The potential applications of these nanocomposites extend to sunlight-activated antimicrobial films and coatings, addressing the growing demand for sustainable and effective antimicrobial materials.

Abstract
As the world's second most abundant renewable natural phenolic polymer after cellulose, lignin is an extremely complex, amorphous, highly cross-linked class of aromatic polyphenolic macromolecules. Due to its special aromatic structure, lignin is considered to be one of the most suitable candidates to replace fossil materials, thus the research on lignin functional materials has received extensive attention. Because lignin has stimuli-sensitive groups such as phenolic hydroxyl, hydroxyl, and carboxyl, the preparation of stimuli-responsive lignin-based functional materials by combining lignin with some stimuli-responsive polymers is a current research hotspot. Therefore, this article will review the research progress of stimuli-responsive lignin-based functional materials in order to guide the subsequent work. Firstly, we elaborate the source and preparation of lignin and various types of lignin pretreatment methods. We then sort out and discuss the preparation of lignin stimulus-responsive functional materials according to different stimuli (pH, light, temperature, ions, etc.). Finally, we further envision the scope and potential value of lignin stimulus-responsive functional materials for applications in actuators, optical coding, optical switches, solar photothermal converters, tissue engineering, and biomedicine.

Abstract
In this study, the combination of sequential solvent fractionation of technical Kraft lignin was followed by allylation of most OH functionalities to give highly functional thermoset resins. All lignin fractions were highly functionalized on the phenolic (≥95%) and carboxylic acid OH (≥85%) and to a significant extent on the aliphatic OH moieties (between 43 and 75%). The resins were subsequently cross-linked using thiol-ene chemistry. The high amount of allyl functionalities resulted in a high cross-link density. Dynamic mechanical analysis measurements showed that the thioether content, directly related to the allyl content, strongly affects the performance of these thermosets with a glass transition temperature (Tg) between 81 and 95 °C and with a storage modulus between 1.9 and 3.8 GPa for all thermosets. The lignin fractions and lignin-based thermosets' morphology, at the nanoscale, was studied by wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements. Two π-π stacking interactions were observed: sandwich (≈4.1-4.7 Å) and T-shaped (≈5.5-7.2 Å). The introduction of allyl functionalities weakens the T-shaped π-π stacking interactions. A new signal corresponding to a distance of ≈3.5 Å was observed in lignin-based thermosets, which was attributed to a thioether organized structure. At the same time, a lignin superstructure was observed with a distance/size corresponding to 7.9-17.5 Å in all samples.

Abstract
An efficient interfacial heating system composed of a light-absorbing material and a hydrophilic porous support is developed through eco-friendly and energy-effective fabrication processes. Lignin nanoparticles (NPs) and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) are harnessed as biorenewable light absorbers and hydrophilic supports, respectively. Lignin NPs are prepared using a solvent exchange process of the fractionated lignin with organic solvents to improve its π-π stacking and light-absorbing property for efficient photothermal conversion. Then, the lignin NPs are mixed with CNFs and lyophilized to obtain a light-absorbing porous hydrogel (LAPH), and the resulting LAPHs are covalently cross-linked and hybridized with Au NPs through a seed-mediated growth to further enhance their mechanical stability, hydrophilicity, and photothermal conversion properties. The resulting LAPHs exhibit an outstanding and prolonged performance as a solar steam generator such as high salt and pH tolerance, evaporation rate (3.17 kg m-2 h-1), and solar steam generation efficiency (83.4%) under 1 sun irradiation.

Abstract
Two-dimensional (2D) evaporation systems could significantly reduce the heat conduction loss compared with the photothermal conversion materials particles during the evaporation process. But the normal layer-by-layer self-assembly method of 2D evaporator would reduce the water transportation performance due to the highly compact channel structures. Herein, in our work, the 2D evaporator with cellulose nanofiber (CNF), Ti3C2Tx (MXene) and polydopamine modified lignin (PL) by layer-by-layer self-assembly and freeze-drying methods. The addition of PL also enhanced the light absorption and photothermal conversion performance of the evaporator due to the strong conjugation and π-π molecular interactions. After the combination process of layer-by-layer self-assembly and freeze-drying process, the as-prepared freeze-dried CNF/MXene/PL (f-CMPL) aerogel film exhibited highly interconnected porous structure with promoted hydrophilicity (enhanced water transportation performance). Benefiting these favorable properties, the f-CMPL aerogel film showed enhanced light absorption performance (surface temperature could be reached to 39 °C under 1 sun irradiation) and higher evaporation rate (1.60 kg m-2 h-1). This work opens new way to fabricate cellulose-based evaporator with highly evaporation performance for the solar steam generation and provides a new idea for improving the evaporation performance of 2D cellulose-based evaporator.

Abstract
Freshwater pollution and shortage have become an imminent problem. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a multi-functional membrane for the production of fresh water. In this work, the regenerated lignocellulose modified cotton fabric was developed as a novel, multi-functional and degradable membrane (LCPT@CF) for efficient oil-water separation and solar steam generation for the first time. The fabrication method has the merits of simple, environmentally friendly and cost effective. The regenerated lignocellulose was adhered on the surface of cotton fabric by tannic acid and polyvinyl alcohol complexes tightly, and the multilayered structures of the LCPT@CF can be formed, which endowed the membranes with underwater superoleophobic property and durability. The underwater superoleophobic property enabled LCPT@CF to purify various kinds of oil-in-water emulsions with a separation efficiency of more than 99.90%. Moreover, benefiting from the excellent photothermal conversion capacity of regenerated lignocellulose, the LCPT@CF achieved high evaporation rate of 1.39 kg m-2 h-1 and favorable evaporation efficiency of 84% under 1 sun illumination, and the LCPT@CF also presented excellent salt-resistance for evaporating seawater for 20 cycles, without salt accumulation. More importantly, the LCPT@CF could be naturally degradable by microorganisms in the natural condition within 3 months, which had outstanding environmental friendliness. These above results demonstrated that the green and efficient LCPT@CF could play great potential in oil-water separation and sewage purification.

Abstract
Green and controllable preparation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) remains a great challenge. In this work, ethanol-extracted lignin-based nanosilver composites (AgNPs@EL) were synthesized at room temperature with the assistance of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The ethanol-extracted lignin (EL) could serve as natural dispersion carriers and reducing agents for AgNPs. The reducing ability of EL could be further improved under UV irradiation, which enables the rapid synthesis of AgNPs at room temperature. More importantly, due to the good photothermal conversion capacity of EL, AgNPs@EL exhibits remarkably enhanced photothermal performance and excellent photothermal antibacterial ability, which could cause 7.2 and 5.3 log10 CFU/mL reduction against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively, under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation (808 nm, 1.8 W/cm2) for 5 min. Furthermore, the composite film obtained by impregnating bacterial cellulose onto AgNPs@EL solution also shows significantly improved mechanical properties and photothermal antimicrobial activity. Therefore, this work may provide insights into the design of lignin-based photothermal-mediated antimicrobial materials.

Abstract
Solar interfacial evaporation based on wood-derived materials has been considered a promising strategy for desalination and wastewater purification. Herein, we adopted delignified wood (DW) as the water transport substrate and lignosulfonate (LS)-modified narrow-band gap semiconductor nickel disulfide (NiS2) as the light-absorbing agent (LS-NiS2) to fabricate a high-efficiency evaporator (LS-NiS2@DW). On the one hand, the high absorbance (>95%) within a broad wavelength range and excellent photothermal conversion efficiency of LS-NiS2 endow efficient solar energy utilization. On the other hand, the hydrophilicity of DW facilitates water activation, which results in a lower evaporation enthalpy of LS-NiS2@DW (1274.4 kJ kg-1) than that of pure water. By combining LS-NiS2 and DW, LS-NiS2@DW achieved an evaporation rate as high as 2.80 kg m-2 h-1 under one sun irradiation (1 kW m-2), and the evaporation efficiency reached 87.4%. Notably, LS-NiS2@DW exhibits a high evaporation rate (2.42-2.69 kg m-2 h-1) in simulated seawater for 24 h with no salt crystals formed on the surface. Moreover, LS-NiS2@DW shows high antibacterial activity with about 90% reduction in bacterial survival rate. This work could provide new perspectives for the design of a high-efficiency wood-based photothermal evaporator.

Abstract
Lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) are usually produced from lignin solution through supersaturation. The structure of the lignin in solution is still poorly understood due to structural variability of isolated lignins. Here, lignins were extracted from different plants to establish a general pattern of their structure in several lignin solvents. Lignin molecules (lignin subunits) and larger aggregates were observed in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), ethylene glycol (EG) and 0.1 N NaOD solutions by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). It was proposed that the aggregates were composed of lignin subunits with a higher molecular weight and a higher ratio of the aliphatic to phenolic hydroxyl groups. The size, shape, and compactness are important factors that affect the uses of the LNPs, which were obtained from the SANS data for the first time. A discrepancy in the radius between SANS and DLS was discovered, pointing to a large hydration shell around the LNPs in aqueous solutions. The cytotoxicity of the corncob lignin, kraft lignin, and their LNPs were measured and compared.

Abstract
Fast-response artificial phototropic materials are a promising tool for solar energy utilisation, yet their preparation remains challenging. Herein, we report the so-called photothermal domino strategy for constructing fast-response artificial phototropic materials. In this strategy, photothermal generation, heat conduction and thermal actuation are sequentially optimised by a coordination effect. For the first time, lignin-based organic radicals boosted by this coordination effect are used to significantly enhance photothermal conversion. Interfacial coordination bonds between lignin and an elastomer matrix promote interfacial heat conduction. Light-stimulated thermal actuation is significantly improved by coordination-assisted mechanical training. The prepared biomimetic phototropic material exhibits excellent phototropic ability, with a 2.5 s light-tracking process, showing great application potential for efficient solar energy utilisation. This strategy shows great significance for fabricating high-performance intelligent phototropic materials using widely available, green raw materials.

Abstract
Broadband strong absorption of solar light over a wide range of angles, low heat loss, and excellent structural reliability are of significance for enhancing solar harvesting of photothermal materials; however, it remains a challenge to achieve these attributes simultaneously. Herein, a tailored photothermal composite nanodroplet (LMP-rGO) featured with dual-interface, which comprises liquid metal (LM) core with polydopamine (PDA) photothermal middle layer of tunable thickness and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) shell, is particularly prepared. Thermal-insulating PDA coating and light-absorbing carbonaceous shell allow it to synergistically suppress heat loss and reinforce photon absorptivity. To maximize photothermal conversion and photon harvesting yield on solar light, inspired by light trapping architecture, a three-dimensional (3D) stepped micropyramid grating array framework is tactfully designed to ameliorate light coupling. Utilizing the scalability and cost-effectiveness of the poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), the flexible 3D-structured PVA/LMP-rGO absorbers are successfully constructed via a controllable casting molding strategy. As a proof-of-concept, the developed micrograting absorber exhibits a desirable combination of strong broadband selective light absorption (94.9% for parallel to the grating direction and 97.3% for perpendicular to the grating direction), superior photothermal conversion effect (89.4%), high heat flux density, and fascinating mechanical properties. Also, an efficient and steady solar-driven thermoelectric generator (STEG) system for real-time solar-heat-electric conversion, with its high peak power density of 245.9 μW cm-2 under one sun irradiation, is further displayed, making an important step to rationally design LM-based nanocomposite droplets for solar energy harvesting.

Abstract
The efficient utilization of lignin in 3D printing had attracted increasing attention using this abundant and eco-friendly material. However, the large-scale utilization of lignin in 3D printing remains a great challenge due to its inherent brittleness and non-thermoplasticity. In this study, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) was introduced to regulate the rheological properties of lignin for 3D printing. The Lignin/TPU composite of 3D printing exhibited a smooth surface, non-plastic, warm wood touch, and natural color at 50 wt% lignin loading. To further improve the mechanical properties of the composite, carbon fiber (CF) was added to the Lignin/TPU composite. The resulting CF/Lignin/TPU composites possessed 1.7 times higher tensile strength and 2.4 times higher elongation at break compared to Lignin/TPU composite. Meanwhile, the smooth surface of filament and dense interlayer bonds of printed specimens are also achieved. This work provides new insights to realize the high-value utilization of lignin and expands the practical application of lignin in 3D printing.

Abstract
Lignin is one of the main components of the plant cell wall, and the thermal properties of in situ biomass lignin are crucial for the multi-scale modeling of biomass properties and the thermodynamic modeling of lignin. In this study, high yields of double enzymatic lignin (DEL) were successfully isolated from softwood Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolate (Lamb.) Hook.) and hardwood white birch (Betula platyphylla Suk.) to represent the in situ wood lignin. Their thermal properties, including specific heat capacity, thermal conductivity, thermal stability, and thermal degradation kinetic parameters, were tested and simulated. The results showed that Chinese fir DEL has different chemical structural units and thermal properties than birch DEL. The specific heat capacities of Chinese fir DEL and birch DEL at 20 °C were 1301 and 1468 J/(kg·K), respectively, and their thermal conductivities were 0.30 and 0.32 W/(m·K). Their specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity showed a positive linear relationship over a temperature range of 20–120 °C. Chinese fir DEL had a better thermal stability and a higher carbon residue than birch DEL. The average activation energy and pre-exponential factor changed with the conversion rate, and their relationships were simulated using linear or quadratic equations in the conversion rate range of 0.02–0.60. A second-order reaction function was found to be the best mechanism function for DEL thermal degradation.

Abstract
Solar-driven interfacial vaporization by localizing solar-thermal energy conversion to the air-water interface has attracted tremendous attention. In the process of converting solar energy into heat energy, photothermal materials play an essential role. Herein, a flexible solar-thermal material di-cyan substituted 5,12-dibutylquinacridone (DCN-4CQA)@Paper was developed by coating photothermal quinacridone derivatives on the cellulose paper. The DCN-4CQA@Paper combines desired chemical and physical properties, broadband light-absorbing, and shape-conforming abilities that render efficient photothermic vaporization. Notably, synergetic coupling of solar-steam and solar-electricity technologies by integrating DCN-4CQA@Paper and the thermoelectric devices is realized without trade-offs, highlighting the practical consideration toward more impactful solar heat exploitation. Such solar distillation and low-grade heat-to-electricity generation functions can provide potential opportunities for fresh water and electricity supply in off-grid or remote areas.

Abstract
In this contribution, a unique donor-acceptor conjugated organic-small-molecule photothermal material, namely GDPA-QCN, is presented. Bulky dendritic triphenylamine (GDPA) was grafted onto quinoxaline-6,7-dicarbonitrile (QCN) with a phenyl ring as a bridge to form an "umbrella" architecture. Benefited from the particular molecular structure, in solid state, GDPA-QCN molecules adopted a loose packing mode due to the steric effect of "umbrella head" dendritic triphenylamine and flexible molecular structure feature, which allows efficient intramolecular motions and consequently elevates energy dissipation by taking the pathway of thermal deactivation within broad absorption range. The GDPA-QCN solid has high solar-thermal conversion efficiency with an absorption range from 300 to 1100 nm, which can promote superior water purification and electricity generation performance.

Abstract
Sustainable materials are needed to mitigate against the increase in energy consumption resulting from population growth and urbanization. Here, we report fully biobased nanocomposite films and coatings that display efficient photothermal activity and selective absorption of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The nanocomposites with 20 wt % of lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) embedded in a chitosan matrix displayed an efficient UV blocking of 97% at 400 nm along with solar energy-harvesting properties. The reflectance spectra of the nanocomposite films revealed the importance of well-dispersed nanoparticles in the matrix to achieve efficient UV-blocking properties. Finally, yet importantly, we demonstrate the nanocomposites with 20 wt % LNPs as photothermal glass coatings for passive cooling of indoor temperature by simply tailoring the coating thickness. Under simulated solar irradiation of 100 mW/cm2, the 20 μm coating achieved a 58% decrease in the temperature increment in comparison to the system with uncoated glass. These renewable nanocomposite films and coatings are highly promising sustainable solutions to facilitate indoor thermal management and improve human health and well-being.

Abstract
The fabrication of biobased smart materials from renewable biomasses is of great importance for sustainable development. Although lignin possesses photothermal conversion potential, the development of lignin-based actuators with large contraction and fast photoresponse has various hurdles. Herein, simply by blending with castor oil-derived polyamide elastomers, a lignin-based photoresponsive actuator can be obtained, which accomplishes up to 18% light-driven contraction under loading within 3 s. The crystals in polymer matrix serve as switch segments, firmly locking the stress-induced strain energy, which is swiftly released due to photothermal processes and induced a huge contraction. The composite, LP4-50, can contract and induce dynamic bending in multiple directions when irradiated locally with a near-infrared 808 nm laser. Furthermore, at standard 1 sun irradiation (100 mW/cm2), LP4-50 was successfully employed to power a thermoelectric generator. This strategy establishes the groundwork for further research into the photothermal characteristics of lignin and encourages new applications in stimulus-responsive actuators.

Abstract
As a prominent derivative of a natural sunscreen, methyl sinapate is an ideal candidate to provide fundamental insight into strategies on how to come to a rational design of artificial sunscreen filters with improved photoprotective properties. Here, static and time-resolved Zero Kinetic Energy-Pulsed Field Ionization (ZEKE-PFI) photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to study the spectroscopy and decay pathways of its electronically excited states. We find that different conformers are subject to distinct structural changes upon electronic excitation, and trace the structural changes that occur upon excitation back to the character of the LUMO. Ionization efficiency spectra in combination with pump-probe ZEKE-PFI spectra are consistent with the conclusion that the long-lived electronically excited state observed in the decay of the lowest excited singlet state is the lowest excited triplet state. Concurrently with providing information on the electronically excited states, the studies allow for a detailed characterization of the spectroscopic properties of the ground state of the radical ion, which is important in the context of the use of cinnamates in nature as antioxidants. Our studies determine the adiabatic ionization energies of the syn/cis, anti/cis and anti/trans conformers as 60 291.1 ± 0.5, 60 366.9 ± 0.5 and 60 503.9 ± 1.0 cm-1, respectively, and provide accurate vibrational fequencies of low-frequency modes of the molecular ion in its electronic ground state. Finally, the studies emphasize the important role of vibrational and electronic autoionization processes that start to dominate the ionization dynamics in non-rigid molecules of the present size.

Abstract
Lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) are promising renewable nanomaterials with applications ranging from biomedicine to water purification. However, the instability of LNPs under acidic and basic conditions severely limits their functionalization for improved performance. Here, we show that controlling the degree of esterification can significantly improve the stability of lignin oleate nanoparticles (OLNPs) in acidic and basic aqueous dispersions. The high stability of OLNPs is attributed to the alkyl chains accumulated in the shell of the particle, which delays protonation/deprotonation of carboxylic acid and phenolic hydroxyl groups. Owing to the enhanced stability, acid‐ and base‐catalyzed functionalization of OLNPs at pH 2.0 and pH 12.0 via oxirane ring‐opening reactions were successfully performed. We also demonstrated these new functionalized particles as efficient pH‐switchable dye adsorbents and anticorrosive particulate coatings.

Abstract
Films with the capacity for photoluminescence and haze, which can convert UV to visible light and enhance light management, are of great importance for optoelectronic devices. Here, taking advantage of the inherent fluorescence and self-assembly properties of lignin, we have developed a sustainable lignin-derived multifunctional dopant (L-MS-NPs) for fabricating optical films with haze, fluorescence, and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) together with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The optical films are used to improve the light-harvesting efficiency of solar cells. Specifically, attributed to the robust morphology in the film matrix, L-MS-NPs cause a rough morphology in the surface of an L-MS-NPs/PVA composite film, which eventually triggers the great optical haze. Additionally, L-MS-NPs inherit fluorescence properties from lignin and show fluorescence emission when embed in the film matrix. Moreover, the PVA film matrix can stabilize the excited triplet state, which finally induces RTP of L-MS-NPs. The combined haze, fluorescence, and RTP properties of the L-MS-NPs/PVA composite film enhances the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of dye-sensitized solar cells from ∼3.9 to ∼4.1%.

Abstract
Lignin from different biomasses possess biological antioxidation and antimicrobial activities, which depend on the number of functional groups and the molecular weight of lignin. In this work, organosolv fractionation was carried out to prepare the lignin fraction with a suitable structure to tailor excellent biological activities. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analysis showed that decreased molecular weight lignin fractions were obtained by sequentially organosolv fractionation with anhydrous acetone, 50% acetone and 37.5% hexanes. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) results indicated that the lignin fractions with lower molecular weight had fewer substructures and a higher phenolic hydroxyl content, which was positively correlated with their antioxidation ability. Both of the original lignin and fractionated lignins possessed the ability to inhibit the growth of Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Salmonella) and Gram-positive bacteria (Streptococcus and Staphylococcus aureus) by destroying the cell wall of bacteria in vitro, in which the lignin fraction with the lowest molecular weight and highest phenolic hydroxyl content (L3) showed the best performance. Besides, the L3 lignin showed the ability to ameliorate Escherichia coli-induced diarrhea damages of mice to improve the formation of intestinal contents in vivo. These results imply that a lignin fraction with a tailored structure from bamboo lignin can be used as a novel antimicrobial agent in the biomedical field.
