Highly Strong and Solvent-Resistant Cellulose Nanocrystal Photonic Films for Optical Coatings

Enhancement of PLA crystallization, transparency, and strength by adding the long aliphatic chains grafted CNC

The combination of crystallization, transparency, and strength is still a challenge for broadening the application of polylactic acid (PLA) films, while it is also difficult to balance. In this work, the long aliphatic chains of octadecylamine (ODA) were grafted onto the surface of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) by tannic acid oxidation self-polymerization and Michael addition/Schiff base reaction between polytannic acid and ODA. Furthermore, the ODA grafted CNC (g-CNC) was used as green reinforcement for the PLA matrix and a series of PLA/g-CNC nanocomposite films were prepared by the casting method. The DSC, WAXD, POM, UV-vis and stretching test were employed to examine the effect of g-CNC on the properties of the as-prepared PLA/g-CNC nanocomposite films. It shows that the g-CNC is effective to improve the melt crystallization rate of PLA from 11 min to 7.3 min. Most importantly, the crystal size of the PLA spherulites was significantly reduced due to the well dispersion in the amorphous PLA matrix, which would effectively improve the transmittance of the PLA films and synchronously realize the combination of crystallization (62 %) and transparency (80.6 %). Moreover, the improved crystallization could also enhance the heat deformation performance of the PLA films since the heat resistance is closely associated with the crystallinity. Besides, the grafted ODA long chains improve the compatibility between CNC and PLA, leading to the reinforcement of PLA matrix, where the tensile strength reaches 65.05 MPa from 44.31 MPa. Compared with the pristine CNC, the addition of g-CNC makes more comprehensive improvement in the properties of the PLA films.

Deep-eutectic-solvent modulation of self-assembled multi-responsive films based on polyvinyl alcohol/cellulose nanocrystal and grape skin red for highly sensitive food monitoring

To enhance the mechanics performance, sensitivity and response range of multi-responsive photonic films, herein, a facile method for fabricating multi-responsive films is demonstrated using the evaporative self-assembly of a mixture of grape skin red (GSR), cellulose nanocrystal (CNC), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and deep eutectic solvent (DES). The prepared materials exhibited excellent thermal stability, strain properties, solvent resistance, ultraviolet (UV) resistance and antioxidant activity. Compared to a pure PVA film, the presence of GSR strengthened the antioxidant property of the film by 240.1 % and provided excellent UV barrier capability. The additional cross-linking of DES and CNC promoted more efficient phase fusion, yielding a film strain of 41.5 %. The addition of hydrophilic compound GSR, wetting and swelling due to the DES and the surface inhomogeneity of the films rendered the multi-responsive films high sensitivity, wide response range and multi-cyclic stability in environments with varying pH and humidity. A sample application showed that a PVA/CNC/DES film has the potential to differentiate between fresh, sub-fresh and fully spoiled shrimps. The above results help in designing intelligent thin film materials that integrate antioxidant properties, which help in monitoring the changes in food freshness and food packaging.

Large-scale production of chiral nematic microspheres

The membrane emulsification technique enables the self-assembly of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) confined within a spherical geometry for large-scale production. The resulting solid microspheres show long-range ordering with chiral nematic structures, and this fascinating hierarchical architecture can even be transferred to mesoporous carbon or silica microparticles by a sacrificial template method.

Intense Left-handed Circularly Polarized Luminescence in Chiral Nematic Hydroxypropyl Cellulose Composite Films

Integrating optically active components into chiral photonic cellulose to fabricate circularly polarized luminescent materials has transformative potential in disease detection, asymmetric reactions, and anticounterfeiting techniques. However, the lack of cellulose-based left-handed circularly polarized light (L-CPL) emissions hampers the progress of these chiral functionalizations. Here, this work proposes an unprecedented strategy: incorporating a chiral nematic organization of hydroxypropyl cellulose with robust aggregation-induced emission luminogens to generate intense L-CPL emission. By utilizing N,N-dimethylformamide as a good solvent for fluorescent components and cellulose matrices, this work produces a right-handed chiral nematic structure film with a uniform appearance in reflective and fluorescent states. Remarkably, this system integrates a high asymmetric factor (0.51) and an impressive emission quantum yield (55.8%) into one fascinating composite. More meaningfully, this approach is versatile, allowing for the incorporation of luminogen derivatives emitting multicolored L-CPL. These chiral fluorescent films possess exceptional mechanical flexibility (toughness up to 0.9 MJ m-3) and structural stability even under harsh environmental exposures, making them promising for the fabrication of various products. Additionally, these films can be cast on the fabrics to reveal multilevel and durable anticounterfeiting capabilities or used as a chiral light source to induce enantioselective photopolymerization, thereby offering significant potential for diverse practical applications.

Properties of APTES-Modified CNC Films

Sulfated cellulose nanocrystals' (CNCs') facile aqueous dispersibility enables producing films, fibers, and other materials using only water as a solvent but prevents using sulfated CNCs in applications that require water immersion. We report that modifying CNCs with 3-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (APTES) via a simple, single-pot reaction scheme dramatically improves the hydrolytic stability of CNC films. The effects of APTES modification on CNCs' properties were studied using attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic force and optical microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic light scattering, and ultimate analysis. Substituting a mere 12.6% of the CNCs' available hydroxyl groups with APTES dramatically increased the hydrolytic stability of shear cast films while only having minor impacts on their mechanical properties. In addition, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCMD) and multiparametric surface plasmon resonance (MP-SPR) studies showed that the CNC-APTES films also had a greater irreversible binding with carbofuran, a pesticide and emerging contaminant. These results highlight that APTES modification is a promising method for increasing the utility of sulfated CNCs in sensors, adsorbents, and other applications requiring water immersion.

Chirality Supramolecular Systems: Helical Assemblies, Structure Designs, and Functions

Chirality, as one of the most striking characteristics, exists at various scales in nature. Originating from the interactions of host and guest molecules, supramolecular chirality possesses huge potential in the design of functional materials. Here, an overview of the recent progress in structure designs and functions of chiral supramolecular materials is present. First, three design routes of the chiral supramolecular structure are summarized. Compared with the template-induced and chemical synthesis strategies that depend on accurate molecular identification, the twisted-assembly technique creates chiral materials through the ordered stacking of the nanowire or films. Next, chirality inversion and amplification are reviewed to explain the chirality transfer from the molecular level to the macroscopic scale, where the available external stimuli on the chirality inversion are also given. Lastly, owing to the optical activity and the characteristics of the layer-by-layer stacking structure, the supramolecular chirality materials display various excellent performances, including smart response, shape-memorization, superior mechanical performance, and applications in biomedical fields. To sum up, this work provides a systematic review of the helical assemblies, structure design, and applications of supramolecular chirality systems.

Recent Advances in Flexible CNC-Based Chiral Nematic Film Materials

Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) is a renewable resource derived from lignocellulosic materials, known for its optical permeability, biocompatibility, and unique self-assembly properties. Recent years have seen great progresses in cellulose nanocrystal-based chiral photonic materials. However, due to its inherent brittleness, cellulose nanocrystal shows limitations in the fields of flexible materials, optical sensors and food freshness testing. In order to solve the above limitations, attempts have been made to improve the flexibility of cellulose nanocrystal materials without destroying their structural color. Despite these progresses, a systematic review on them is lacking. This review aims to fill this gap by providing an overview of the main strategies and the latest research findings on the flexibilization of cellulose nanocrystal-based chiral nematic film materials (FCNM). Specifically, typical substances and methods used for their preparation are summarized. Moreover, different kinds of cellulose nanocrystal-based composites are compared in terms of flexibility. Finally, potential applications and future challenges of flexible cellulose nanocrystal-based chiral nematic materials are discussed, inspiring further research in this field.

Structural Color from Cellulose Nanocrystals or Chitin Nanocrystals: Self-Assembly, Optics, and Applications

Widespread concerns over the impact of human activity on the environment have resulted in a desire to replace artificial functional materials with naturally derived alternatives. As such, polysaccharides are drawing increasing attention due to offering a renewable, biodegradable, and biocompatible feedstock for functional nanomaterials. In particular, nanocrystals of cellulose and chitin have emerged as versatile and sustainable building blocks for diverse applications, ranging from mechanical reinforcement to structural coloration. Much of this interest arises from the tendency of these colloidally stable nanoparticles to self-organize in water into a lyotropic cholesteric liquid crystal, which can be readily manipulated in terms of its periodicity, structure, and geometry. Importantly, this helicoidal ordering can be retained into the solid-state, offering an accessible route to complex nanostructured films, coatings, and particles. In this review, the process of forming iridescent, structurally colored films from suspensions of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) is summarized and the mechanisms underlying the chemical and physical phenomena at each stage in the process explored. Analogy is then drawn with chitin nanocrystals (ChNCs), allowing for key differences to be critically assessed and strategies toward structural coloration to be presented. Importantly, the progress toward translating this technology from academia to industry is summarized, with unresolved scientific and technical questions put forward as challenges to the community.

Electrospun Cellulose Nanocrystals Reinforced Flexible Sensing Paper for Triboelectric Energy Harvesting and Dynamic Self-Powered Tactile Perception

The technical synergy between flexible sensing paper and triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) in the next stage of artificial intelligence Internet of Things engineering makes the development of intelligent sensing paper with triboelectric function very attractive. Therefore, it is extremely urgent to explore functional papers that are more suitable for triboelectric sensing. Here, a cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) reinforced PVDF hybrid paper (CPHP) is developed by electrospinning technology. Benefitting from the unique effects of CNCs, CPHP forms a solid cross-linked network among fibers and obtains a high-strength (25 MPa) paper-like state and high surface roughness. Meanwhile, CNCs also improve the triboelectrification effect of CPHP by assisting the PVDF matrix to form more electroactive phases (96% share) and a higher relative permittivity (17.9). The CPHP-based TENG with single electrode configuration demonstrates good output performance (open-circuit voltage of 116 V, short-circuit current of 2.2 µA and power density of 91 mW m-2 ) and ultrahigh pressure-sensitivity response (3.95 mV Pa-1 ), which endows CPHP with reliable power supply and sensing capability. More importantly, the CPHP-based flexible self-powered tactile sensor with TENG array exhibits multifunctional applications in imitation Morse code compilation, tactile track recognition, and game character control, showing great prospects in the intelligent inductive device and human-machine interaction.

Constructing a cellulose based chiral liquid crystal film with high flexibility, water resistance, and optical property

Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) derived from cellulose can form a liquid crystal film with bright structural color by evaporative-induced self-assembly (EISA). As a new class of photonic liquid crystals material, it has attracted much attention because of its intrinsic unique structural characteristics and excellent optical properties. However, the brittleness and water sensitivity of CNC film have hindered its practical application. Herein, multiple cross-linked networks CNC/(polyethylene glycol diacrylate:polyethylene oxide) (PEGDA:PEO) composite film was prepared through EISA and UV irradiation strategies. The as-prepared film exhibits high-flexibility with a fracture strain of up to 36.40 % and strong water resistance, with water absorption at an equilibrium of only 17.41 %. Moreover, the film retains its structural color in aqueous solution for a long time due to its water stability. The outstanding flexibility and water resistance of CNC composite film are attributed to multiple crosslinked networks (i.e. PEGDA, PEO, and PEDGA-PEO networks), which endow the film with excellent stress dispersion and transferability when stretched and limit film swelling in water without affecting chiral nematic structures of CNC. Overall, this work provides a promising strategy to prepare CNC-based film with high-flexibility, water resistance, and optical property for applications like decoration, sensor, and anti-counterfeiting.

Responsive Regulation of Energy Transfer in Lanthanide-Doped Nanomaterials Dispersed in Chiral Nematic Structure

The responsive control of energy transfer (ET) plays a key role in the broad applications of lanthanide-doped nanomaterials. Photonic crystals (PCs) are excellent materials for ET regulation. Among the numerous materials that can be used to fabricate PCs, chiral nematic liquid crystals are highly attractive due to their good photoelectric responsiveness and biocompatibility. Here, the mechanisms of ET and the photonic effect of chiral nematic structures on ET are introduced; the regulation methods of chiral nematic structures and the resulting changes in ET of lanthanide-doped nanomaterials are highlighted; and the challenges and promising opportunities for ET in chiral nematic structures are discussed.

Robust Cellulose Nanocrystal-Based Self-Assembled Composite Membranes Doped with Polyvinyl Alcohol and Graphene Oxide for Osmotic Energy Harvesting

Osmotic energy from the salinity gradients represents a promising energy resource with stable and sustainable characteristics. Nanofluidic membranes can be considered as powerful alternatives to the traditional low-performance ion exchange membrane to achieve high-efficiency osmotic energy harvesting. However, the development of a highly efficient and easily scalable core membrane component from low-cost raw materials remains challenging. Here, a composite membrane based on the self-assembly of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and graphene oxide (GO) nanoflakes as additives is developed to provide a solution. The introduction of soft PVA polymer significantly improves the mechanical strength and water stability of the composite membrane by forming a nacre-like structure. Benefiting from the abundant negative charges of CNC nanorods and GO nanoflakes and the generated network nanochannels, the composite membrane demonstrates a good cation-selective transport capacity, thus contributing to an optimal osmotic energy conversion of 6.5 W m-2 under a 100-fold salinity gradient and an exemplary stability throughout 25 consecutive days of operation. This work provides an option for the development of nanofluidic membranes that can be easily produced on a large scale from well-resourced and sustainable biomass materials for high-efficiency osmotic energy conversion.

Sustainable, Insoluble, and Photonic Cellulose Nanocrystal Patches for Calcium Ion Sensing in Sweat

Self-assembly of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) is invaluable for the development of sustainable optics and photonics. However, the functional failure of CNC-derived materials in humid or liquid environments inevitably impairs their development in biomedicine, membrane separation, environmental monitoring, and wearable devices. Here, a facile and robust method to fabricate insoluble hydrogels in a self-assembled CNC-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) system is reported. Due to the reconstruction of inter- or intra-molecular hydrogen bond interactions, thermal dehydration makes an optimized CNC/PVA photonic film form a stable hydrogel network in an aqueous solution rather than dissolve. Notably, the resulting hydrogel exhibits superb mechanical performance (stress up to 3.3 Mpa and tough up to 0.73 MJ m^-3 ) and reversible conversion between dry and wet states, enabling it convenient for specific functionalization. Sodium alginate (SA) can be adsorbed into the CNC photonic structure by swelling dry CNC/PVA film in a SA solution. The prepared hydrogel showcases the comprehensive properties of freezing resistance (-20°C), strong adhesion, satisfactory biocompatibility, and highly sensitive and selective Ca²⁺ sensing. The material could act as a portable wearable patch on the skin for the continuous analysis of calcium trends during different physical exercises, facilitating their development in precision nutrition and health monitoring.

Luminescence regulation of lanthanide-doped nanorods in chiral photonic cellulose nanocrystal films

A new design for chiral photonic cellulose nanocrystal films was developed by co-assembling lanthanide-doped nanorods (NRs) into chiral cellulose nanocrystals, in which the photonic band gap (PBG) could be tuned in the visible range by changing the mass fraction of flexible agents, such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and ethylene glycol (EG). Due to the PBG effect, the luminescence modulation in such nanocrystal films had been realized. The down-conversion luminescence from NaGd₃₀Y₆₀F₄:5%Tb³⁺, 5%Eu³⁺ NRs and up-conversion luminescence from NaGd₄₀Y₄₀F₄:18%Yb³⁺, 2%Er³⁺ NRs could be enhanced by 28 % and 18 % respectively, on account of the band edge effect. The luminescence would be inhibited when the luminescence overlapped with the stop band of the PBG. These results implied that the biocompatible photonic cellulose nanocrystal films are ideally suited for applications in optical coding, optical resonators and biocompatible lasers.

Molecular Dynamics Simulations of the Mechanical Properties of Cellulose Nanocrystals-Graphene Layered Nanocomposites

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have received a significant amount of attention due to their excellent physiochemical properties. Herein, based on bioinspired layered materials with excellent mechanical properties, a CNCs-graphene layered structure with covalent linkages (C-C bond) is constructed. The mechanical properties are systematically studied by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in terms of the effects of temperature, strain rate and the covalent bond content. Compared to pristine CNCs, the mechanical performance of the CNCs-graphene layered structure has significantly improved. The elastic modulus of the layered structure decreases with the increase of temperature and increases with the increase of strain rate and covalent bond coverage. The results show that the covalent bonding and van der Waals force interactions at the interfaces play an important role in the interfacial adhesion and load transfer capacity of composite materials. These findings can be useful in further modeling of other graphene-based polymers at the atomic scale, which will be critical for their potential applications as functional materials.

Polymer induced liquid crystal phase behavior of cellulose nanocrystal dispersions

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are a promising bio-based material that has attracted significant attention in the fabrication of functional hybrid materials. The rod-like shape and negative surface charge of CNCs enable their rich colloidal behavior, such as a liquid crystalline phase and hydrogel formation that can be mediated by different additives. This study investigates the effect of depletion-induced attraction in the presence of non-absorbing polyethylene glycol (PEG) of different molecular weights in CNC aqueous dispersions, where the polymer molecules deplete the space around particles, apply osmotic pressure and drive the phase transition. Polarized light microscopy (PLM), rheology, small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) are used to characterize the phase behavior over a time period of one month. In our results, pure CNC dispersion shows three typical liquid crystal shear rheology regimes and cholesteric self-assembly behavior. Tactoid nucleation, growth and coalescence are observed microscopically, and eventually the dispersion presents macroscopic phase separation. PEG with lower molecular weight induces weak attractive depletion forces. Tactoid growth is limited, and the whole system turns into a fully nematic phase macroscopically. With PEG of higher molecular weight, attractive depletion force becomes predominant, thus CNC self-assembly is inhibited and nematic hydrogel formation is triggered. Overall, we demonstrate that depletion induced attraction forces by the addition of PEG enable precise tuning of CNC self-assembly and phase behavior with controllable mechanical strength and optical activity. These findings deepen our fundamental understanding of cellulose nanocrystals and advance their application in colloidal systems and nanomaterials.

A Surface Diffusion Barrier Strategy toward Water-Resistant Photonic Materials for Accurate Detection of Ethanol

Photonic materials that enable visual detection of chemicals have shown great potential for wide applications in chemical, environmental, biotechnological, and food industries, but until now, using hydrophilic photonic materials for tracing water-soluble chemicals remains a major challenge due to the strong water interference. Here, we demonstrate a two-step co-assembly and subsequent surface coating strategy to develop an ethanol-sensitive and anti-water interference photonic crystal film. By using citric acid as a co-assembly phase, high ethanol sensing is realized because of the strong intermolecular affinity. By controlling the thickness of the outer polyvinyl butyral layer, selective ethanol penetration but a water barrier is enabled. Notably, the composite photonic films are free-standing, highly flexible, and controllably structurally colored. We further present using the composite film to quantitatively trace ethanol/water mixtures and potentially track drunk driving as a colorimetric sensor. The heuristic two-step modification strategy proposed in this work not only overcomes the limitation of water interference for hydrophilic colorimetric sensors but also provides references to develop more new photonic materials with water resistance that need to be applied in water/humid environments.

Biomimetic Chiral Photonic Materials with Tunable Metallic Colorations Prepared from Chiral Melanin-like Nanorods for UV Shielding, Humidity Sensing, and Cosmetics

Many biological species combine the helical organization of cellulose or chitin microfibrils with broadband light absorption of black melanin to produce brilliant structural colors with metallic and glossy effects and other diverse functions. In this work, based on core-shell CNC@PDA chiral nanorods consisting of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as the core and melanin-like polydopamine (PDA) as the shell that can form well-defined chiral liquid crystal phases, we report chiral photonic materials that closely mimic the unique coloration mechanisms and functionalities mastered by several biological species. The photonic films formed by such single CNC@PDA nanorods have brilliant iridescent structural colors originating from selective reflection of circularly polarized lights by the helical organization of CNC@PDAs across the films. Furthermore, the colors of such films have background-independent brightness, high visibility, and metallic effects that arise from the light absorption of the PDA component. Especially, the color ranges and metallic effects of the films can be conveniently tuned by varying the thickness of the PDA shell. In addition, the UV absorption and hygroscopic properties of PDA endow these CNC@PDA films with efficient broadband UV shielding and sensitive humidity-induced dynamic color changes. Due to the mussel-like superior adhesion of PDA, CNC@PDA-based photonic coatings can be formed conformably onto diverse kinds of substrates. A shiny eye shadow with viewing angle-dependent colorful patterns was used to demonstrate the potential applications. With combinations of multiple unique properties in one photonic material fabricated from a single building block, these CNC@PDA-based films are expected to have potential applications in cosmetics, UV protection, anticounterfeiting, chiral reflectors, etc.

Highly Tough, Stretchable, and Solvent-Resistant Cellulose Nanocrystal Photonic Films for Mechanochromism and Actuator Properties

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs)-derived photonic materials have confirmed great potential in producing renewable optical and engineering areas. However, it remains challenging to simultaneously possess toughness, strength, and multiple responses for developing high-performance sensors, intelligent coatings, flexible textiles, and multifunctional devices. Herein, the authors report a facile and robust strategy that poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) can be converged into the chiral nematic structure of CNCs by ultraviolet-triggered free radical polymerization in an N,N-dimethylformamide solvent system. The resulting CNC-poly(PEGDMA) composite exhibits impressive strength (42 MPa), stretchability (104%), toughness (31 MJ m^-3 ), and solvent resistance. Notably, it preserves vivid optical iridescence, displaying stretchable variation from red, yellow, to green responding to the applied mechanical stimuli. More interestingly, upon exposure to spraying moisture, it executes sensitive actuation (4.6° s^-1 ) and multiple complex 3D deformation behaviors, accompanied by synergistic iridescent appearances. Due to its structural anisotropy of CNC with typical left-handedness, the actuation shows the capability to generate a high probability (63%) of right-handed helical shapes, mimicking a coiled tendril. The authors envision that this versatile system with sustainability, robustness, mechanochromism, and specific actuating ability will open a sustainable avenue in mechanical sensors, stretchable optics, intelligent actuators, and soft robots.

Sustainable iridescence of cast and shear coatings of cellulose nanocrystals

As an eco-friendly sustainable iridescent coating, cholesteric cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) is susceptible to substrate effects or shearing effects. In this work, interface interaction and liquid crystal phase transition were evaluated for fabricating iridescent cast or shear coatings of CNCs onto substrates of polystyrene, glass, ceramic, wood, stainless steel, metal, or metal alloy. Three types of substrate effects and four categories of shearing effects on the structure color mechanism of CNC coatings were proposed. Practically, several efficient approaches, such as increasing colloidal concentration, enhancing water-retention of substrates, raising processing temperature, slowing down shearing speed, or doping functional additives were involved. Hence, a feasible strategy was provided for preparing sustainable, iridescent, stable, and industrially scalable coatings of CNCs.

Construction of Functional Materials in Various Material Forms from Cellulosic Cholesteric Liquid Crystals

Wide use of bio-based polymers could play a key role in facilitating a more sustainable society because such polymers are renewable and ecofriendly. Cellulose is a representative bio-based polymer and has been used in various materials. To further expand the application of cellulose, it is crucial to develop functional materials utilizing cellulosic physicochemical properties that are acknowledged but insufficiently applied. Cellulose derivatives and cellulose nanocrystals exhibit a cholesteric liquid crystal (ChLC) property based on rigidity and chirality, and this property is promising for constructing next-generation functional materials. The form of such materials is an important factor because material form is closely related with function. To date, researchers have reported cellulosic ChLC materials with a wide range of material forms-such as films, gels, mesoporous materials, and emulsions-for diverse functions. We first briefly review the fundamental aspects of cellulosic ChLCs. Then we comprehensively review research on cellulosic ChLC functional materials in terms of their material forms. Thus, this review provides insights into the creation of novel cellulosic ChLC functional materials based on material form designed toward the expanded application of cellulosics.
