Self-Assembly of Large Gold Nanoparticles for Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Portable Copper-Based Electrochemical SERS Sensor for Point-of-Care Testing of Paraquat and Diquat by On-Site Electrostatic Preconcentration

With the advent of portable Raman spectrometers, the deployment of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) in point-of-care testing (POCT) has been initiated. Within any analytical framework employing SERS, the acuity and selectivity inherent to the SERS substrate are of paramount importance. In this article, we utilize in situ electrochemical passivation technology to fabricate CuI passivation film, which serves as a flexible copper-based SERS substrate. Furthermore, portable electrochemical SERS (EC-SERS) sensors were prepared by combining this with laser direct writing technology. The detection signal was amplified using electrostatic preconcentration technology, showcasing impressive sensitivity, selectivity, and stability in pesticide detection. The detected concentrations of paraquat and diquat in tea reached as low as 3.36 and 2.43 μg/kg, respectively. Furthermore, the application of electrostatic preconcentration facilitated selective target molecule aggregation on the SERS sensor, markedly increasing Raman signal strength and enabling single-molecule detection. This research introduces an innovative POCT method for pesticides, promising to advance environmental monitoring's analytical capabilities.

Facile Fabrication of SERS Substrates by the Electrodeposition Method to Detect Pesticides with High Enhancement Effect and Long-Term Stability

In this study, surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrates were investigated by the electrodeposition method to detect low concentrations of pesticides via the electrodeposition method with different agents from silver and gold precursors on APTES-modified ITO glass. A dual-potential method supplied three electrodes and was performed with a nucleation potential of 0.7 V for 2 s and a growth potential of -0.2 V for 500 s. The Ag film produced by the electrodeposition approach has great surface uniformity and good SERS signal amplification for the thiram insecticide at low concentrations. Interestingly, the ITO/APTES/Ag substrate extensively increased the sensitivity than the other investigated ones, thanks to the adequate assistance of amino groups of APTES in the denser and hierarchical deposition of Ag NPs. These observations were additionally elucidated via finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) calculation. For thiram, the detection was set at 10-8 M with an enhancement factor of up to 3.6 × 107 times. Comparing the SERS spectra of thiram at concentrations of 10-3, 10-4, and 10-5 M with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of less than 7.0% demonstrates excellent reproducibility of the ITO/APTES/Ag substrate. In addition, the special selectivity of the ITO/APTES/Ag substrate for thiram demonstrates that these nanostructures can identify pesticides with extreme sensitivity.

Development of Au Nanoparticle Two-Dimensional Assemblies Dispersed with Au Nanoparticle-Nanostar Complexes and Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Activity

We recently found that polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-protected metal nanoparticles dispersed in water/butanol mixture spontaneously float to the air/water interface and form two-dimensional assemblies due to classical surface excess theory and Rayleigh-Bénard-Marangoni convection induced by butanol evaporation. In this study, we found that by leveraging this principle, a unique structure is formed where hetero gold nanospheres (AuNPs)/gold nanostars (AuNSs) complexes are dispersed within AuNP two-dimensional assemblies, obtained from a mixture of polyvinylpyrrolidone-protected AuNPs and AuNSs that interact electrostatically with the AuNPs. These structures were believed to form as a result of AuNPs/AuNSs complexes formed in the water/butanol mixture floating to the air/water interface and being incorporated into the growth of AuNP two-dimensional assemblies. These structures were obtained by optimizing the amount of mixed AuNSs, with excessive addition resulting in the formation of random three-dimensional network structures. The AuNP assemblies dispersed with AuNPs/AuNSs complexes exhibited significantly higher Raman (surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering: SERRS) activity compared to simple AuNP assemblies, while the three-dimensional network structure did not show significant SERRS activity enhancement. These results demonstrate the excellent SERRS activity of AuNP two-dimensional assemblies dispersed with hetero AuNPs/AuNSs complexes.

Planting gold nanoflower for harvesting reproducible SERS substrate

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is an ultrasensitive analytical method which has been applied in many fields, and the reproducibility of the substrate is important for reliable SERS analysis. In present work, an innovative method inspired by the flower planting process is put forward to acquire gold nanoflower (AuNF) SERS substrate. Three steps (digging holes, sowing the gold nanoseeds and seeds grow into gold nanoflowers) are included in the substrate fabrication process, and the influence of preparing conditions (like reacting time and Na3Au(SO3)2 concentration) on the substrate morphology and SERS performance are investigated. The acquired AuNF substrate not only exhibits good SERS performance but also possesses excellent reproducibility while being used to detect the rhodamine 6G (R6G) molecular. The relative standard deviation (RSD) of Raman signals among substrates acquired in distinct batches (substrate-to-substrate) is as low as 6.67 %. Since the AuNF substrate is prepared by the wet chemistry route based on seed-mediated growth and there are no expensive reagents or complicated process used, the new process to obtain AuNF substrate is cost-effective and easy to scale up.

Highly Uniform Self-Assembly of Gold Nanoparticles by Butanol-Induced Dehydration and Its SERS Applications in SARS-CoV-2 Detection

We report the development of a reproducible and highly sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate using a butanol-induced self-assembly of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and its application as a rapid diagnostic platform for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The butanol-induced self-assembly process was used to generate a uniform assembly of AuNPs, with multiple hotspots, to achieve high reproducibility. When an aqueous droplet containing AuNPs and target DNAs was dropped onto a butanol droplet, butanol-induced dehydration occurred, enriching the target DNAs around the AuNPs and increasing the loading density of the DNAs on the AuNP surface. The SERS substrate was evaluated by using Raman spectroscopy, which showed strong electromagnetic enhancement of the Raman signals. The substrate was then tested for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 using SERS, and a very low limit of detection (LoD) of 3.1 × 10-15 M was obtained. This provides sufficient sensitivity for the SARS-CoV-2 screening assay, and the diagnostic time is significantly reduced as no thermocycling steps are required. This study demonstrates a method for the butanol-induced self-assembly of AuNPs and its application as a highly sensitive and reproducible SERS substrate for the rapid detection of SARS-CoV-2. The results suggest the potential of this approach for developing rapid diagnostic platforms for other biomolecules and infectious diseases.

Controlling Atomic-Scale Restructuring and Cleaning of Gold Nanogap Multilayers for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Sensing

We demonstrate the reliable creation of multiple layers of Au nanoparticles in random close-packed arrays with sub-nm gaps as a sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrate. Using oxygen plasma etching, all the original molecules creating the nanogaps can be removed and replaced with scaffolding ligands that deliver extremely consistent gap sizes below 1 nm. This allows precision tailoring of the chemical environment of the nanogaps which is crucial for practical Raman sensing applications. Because the resulting aggregate layers are easily accessible from opposite sides by fluids and by light, high-performance fluidic sensing cells are enabled. The ability to cyclically clean off analytes and reuse these films is shown, exemplified by sensing of toluene, volatile organic compounds, and paracetamol, among others.

Aptamer-Based Electrochemical Microfluidic Biosensor for the Detection of Cryptosporidium parvum

Cryptosporidium parvum is a high-risk and opportunistic waterborne parasitic pathogen with highly infectious oocysts that can survive harsh environmental conditions for long periods. Current state-of-the-art methods are limited to lengthy imaging and antibody-based detection techniques that are slow, labor-intensive, and demand trained personnel. Therefore, the development of new sensing platforms for rapid and accurate identification at the point-of-care (POC) is essential to improve public health. Herein, we propose a novel electrochemical microfluidic aptasensor based on hierarchical 3D gold nano-/microislands (NMIs), functionalized with aptamers specific to C. parvum. We used aptamers as robust synthetic biorecognition elements with a remarkable ability to bind and discriminate among molecules to develop a highly selective biosensor. Also, the 3D gold NMIs feature a large active surface area that provides high sensitivity and a low limit of detection (LOD), especially when they are combined with aptamers,. The performance of the NMI aptasensor was assessed by testing the biosensor's ability to detect different concentrations of C. parvum oocysts spiked in different sample matrices, i.e., buffer, tap water, and stool, within 40 min detection time. The electrochemical measurements showed an acceptable LOD of 5 oocysts mL-1 in buffer medium, as well as 10 oocysts mL-1 in stool and tap water media, over a wide linear range of 10-100,000 oocysts mL-1. Moreover, the NMI aptasensor recognized C. parvum oocysts with high selectivity while exhibiting no significant cross-reactivity to other related coccidian parasites. The specific feasibility of the aptasensor was further demonstrated by the detection of the target C. parvum in patient stool samples. Our assay showed coherent results with microscopy and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, achieving high sensitivity and specificity with a significant signal difference (p < 0.001). Therefore, the proposed microfluidic electrochemical biosensor platform could be a stepping stone for the development of rapid and accurate detection of parasites at the POC.

Nanostructures for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of viral respiratory infections: from influenza virus to SARS-CoV-2 variants

Viruses are a major cause of mortality and socio-economic downfall despite the plethora of biopharmaceuticals designed for their eradication. Conventional antiviral therapies are often ineffective. Live-attenuated vaccines can pose a safety risk due to the possibility of pathogen reversion, whereas inactivated viral vaccines and subunit vaccines do not generate robust and sustained immune responses. Recent studies have demonstrated the potential of strategies that combine nanotechnology concepts with the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of viral infectious diseases. The present review provides a comprehensive introduction to the different strains of viruses involved in respiratory diseases and presents an overview of recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of viral infections based on nanotechnology concepts and applications. Discussions in diagnostic/therapeutic nanotechnology-based approaches will be focused on H1N1 influenza, respiratory syncytial virus, human parainfluenza virus type 3 infections, as well as COVID-19 infections caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus Delta variant and new emerging Omicron variant.

Nanoparticle Self-Assembly: From Design Principles to Complex Matter to Functional Materials

The creation of matter with varying degrees of complexities and desired functions is one of the ultimate targets of self-assembly. The ability to regulate the complex interactions between the individual components is essential in achieving this target. In this direction, the initial success of controlling the pathways and final thermodynamic states of a self-assembly process is promising. Despite the progress made in the field, there has been a growing interest in pushing the limits of self-assembly processes. The main inception of this interest is that the intended self-assembled state, with varying complexities, may not be "at equilibrium (or at global minimum)", rendering free energy minimization unsuitable to form the desired product. Thus, we believe that a thorough understanding of the design principles as well as the ability to predict the outcome of a self-assembly process is essential to form a collection of the next generation of complex matter. The present review highlights the potent role of finely tuned interparticle interactions in nanomaterials to achieve the preferred self-assembled structures with the desired properties. We believe that bringing the design and prediction to nanoparticle self-assembly processes will have a similar effect as retrosynthesis had on the logic of chemical synthesis. Along with the guiding principles, the review gives a summary of the different types of products created from nanoparticle assemblies and the functional properties emerging from them. Finally, we highlight the reasonable expectations from the field and the challenges lying ahead in the creation of complex and evolvable matter.

Plasmon-Enhanced Electrochemiluminescence at the Single-Nanoparticle Level

Plasmon-enhanced electrochemiluminescence (ECL) at the single-nanoparticle (NP) level was investigated by ECL microscopy. The Au NPs were assembled into an ordered array, providing a high-throughput platform that can easily locate each NP in sequential characterizations. A strong dependence of ECL intensity on Au NP configurations was observed. We demonstrate for the first time that at the single-particle level, the ECL of Ru(bpy)₃ ²⁺ -TPrA was majorly quenched by small Au NPs (<40 nm), while enhanced by large Au ones (>80 nm) due to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Notably, the ECL intensity was further increased by the coupling effect of neighboring Au NPs. Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) simulations conformed well with the experimental results. This plasmon enhanced ECL microscopy for arrayed single NPs provides a reliable tool for screening electrocatalytic activity at a single particle.

Formation and Characterization of 2D Closely Packed Arrays of Bare Gold Nanoparticles without Aggregation

Uniform 2D arrays of metal nanoparticles (NPs) have received significant attention in the field of molecular sensing using localized surface plasmon resonance. Generally, metal NPs bear organic surface-modifying molecules to prevent aggregation and form 2D metal NP arrays. However, surface-modifying molecules negatively affect molecular sensing. Previously, we developed a technique for forming a 2D bare metal NP array, denoted the sandwich (SW) technique. However, the formation mechanism of these 2D metal NP arrays remains unknown and therefore the experimental conditions of the SW technique are not optimized. Here, we observed the formation of a 2D Au NP (d: 60 nm) array using the SW technique with an optical microscope. Moderate drying conditions of the colloidal droplets sandwiched between two parallel substrates were necessary for forming 2D Au NP arrays. We then optimized the drying conditions and obtained a 2D Au NP array. This array was uniform, and the Au NPs were arranged at distances of 4.5 nm with hexagonal periodicity, without aggregation. Further, the 2D Au NP arrays exhibited excellent spot-to-spot reproducibility in surface-enhanced Raman scattering.

Optoplasmonic MOFs film for SERS detection

Optoplasmonic hybrid structures composed of photonic and plasmonic elements with excellent optical properties are of great significance for the development of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates. In this work, the optoplasmonic hybrid structure is composed of SiO₂ microsphere and two-dimensional (2D) plasmonic- metal organic frameworks (MOF) film. Among them, the 2D plasmonic-MOF film is prepared from silver nanoparticles encapsulated by zeolitic imidazole acid framework (AgNP@ZIF-8) by self-assembly method. This optoplasmonic hybrid structure with gas adsorption properties could be used as a SERS substrate for 4-Mercaptophenol (4-MP) gas detection. Experimental data show that this substrate is dependent on the thickness of the ZIF shell and the size of the SiO₂ microspheres. In addition, it is confirmed by the electromagnetic field simulation of finite-difference time-domain method (FDTD). The optoplasmonic hybrid microstructures exhibit good uniformity for detection of 4-MP gas molecules. This work not only broadens the understanding of our optoplasmonic hybrid structure, but also has broad application prospects in SERS and gas sensing related fields.

A non-invasive ultrasensitive diagnostic approach for COVID-19 infection using salivary label-free SERS fingerprinting and artificial intelligence

Clinical diagnostics for SARS-CoV-2 infection usually comprises the sampling of throat or nasopharyngeal swabs that are invasive and create patient discomfort. Hence, saliva is attempted as a sample of choice for the management of COVID-19 outbreaks that cripples the global healthcare system. Although limited by the risk of eliciting false-negative and positive results, tedious test procedures, requirement of specialized laboratories, and expensive reagents, nucleic acid-based tests remain the gold standard for COVID-19 diagnostics. However, genetic diversity of the virus due to rapid mutations limits the efficiency of nucleic acid-based tests. Herein, we have demonstrated the simplest screening modality based on label-free surface enhanced Raman scattering (LF-SERS) for scrutinizing the SARS-CoV-2-mediated molecular-level changes of the saliva samples among healthy, COVID-19 infected and COVID-19 recovered subjects. Moreover, our LF-SERS technique enabled to differentiate the three classes of corona virus spike protein derived from SARS-CoV-2, SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV. Raman spectral data was further decoded, segregated and effectively managed with the aid of machine learning algorithms. The classification models built upon biochemical signature-based discrimination method of the COVID-19 condition from the patient saliva ensured high accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity. The trained support vector machine (SVM) classifier achieved a prediction accuracy of 95% and F1-score of 94.73%, and 95.28% for healthy and COVID-19 infected patients respectively. The current approach not only differentiate SARS-CoV-2 infection with healthy controls but also predicted a distinct fingerprint for different stages of patient recovery. Employing portable hand-held Raman spectrophotometer as the instrument and saliva as the sample of choice will guarantee a rapid and non-invasive diagnostic strategy to warrant or assure patient comfort and large-scale population screening for SARS-CoV-2 infection and monitoring the recovery process.

Flexible surface-enhanced Raman scatting substrates: recent advances in their principles, design strategies, diversified material selections and applications

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is widely used as a powerful analytical technology in cutting-edge areas such as food safety, biology, chemistry, and medical diagnosis, providing ultra-fast, ultra-sensitive, nondestructive characterization and achieving ultra-high detection sensitivity even down to the single-molecule level. Development of Raman spectroscopy is strongly dependent on high-performance SERS substrates, which have long evolved from the early days of rough metal electrodes to periodic nanopatterned arrays building on solid supporting substrates. For rigid SERS substrates, however, their applications are restricted by sophisticated pretreatments for detecting solid samples with non-planar surfaces. It is therefore essential to reassert the principles in constructing flexible SERS substrates. Herein, we comprehensively review the state-of-the-art in understanding, preparing and using flexible SERS. The basic mechanisms behind the flexible SERS are briefly outlined, typical design strategies are highlighted and diversified selection of materials in preparing flexible SERS substrates are reviewed. Then the recent achievements of various interdisciplinary applications based on flexible SERS substrates are summarized. Finally, the challenges and perspectives for future evolution of flexible SERS and their applications are demonstrated. We propose new research directions focused on stimulating the real potential of SERS as an advanced analytical technique for commercialization.

New Trends in Nanoarchitectured SERS Substrates: Nanospaces, 2D Materials, and Organic Heterostructures

This article reviews recent fabrication methods for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates with a focus on advanced nanoarchitecture based on noble metals with special nanospaces (round tips, gaps, and porous spaces), nanolayered 2D materials, including hybridization with metallic nanostructures (NSs), and the contemporary repertoire of nanoarchitecturing with organic molecules. The use of SERS for multidisciplinary applications has been extensively investigated because the considerably enhanced signal intensity enables the detection of a very small number of molecules with molecular fingerprints. Nanoarchitecture strategies for the design of new NSs play a vital role in developing SERS substrates. In this review, recent achievements with respect to the special morphology of metallic NSs are discussed, and future directions are outlined for the development of available NSs with reproducible preparation and well-controlled nanoarchitecture. Nanolayered 2D materials are proposed for SERS applications as an alternative to the noble metals. The modern solutions to existing limitations for their applications are described together with the state-of-the-art in bio/environmental SERS sensing using 2D materials-based composites. To complement the existing toolbox of plasmonic inorganic NSs, hybridization with organic molecules is proposed to improve the stability of NSs and selectivity of SERS sensing by hybridizing with small or large organic molecules.

Self-Assembly of Polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinylpyridine)/Chloroauric Acid at the Liquid/Liquid Interface

The self-assembly of polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine) at the liquid/liquid interface has been systematically investigated to develop a series of primary morphologies of the aggregates. The block copolymers self-assembled into large areas of nanodot arrays, parallel nanostrands, layered films, parallel nanobelts, honeycomb monolayers, and foams by reacting with chloroauric acid, depending on the molecular structure of the block copolymers and the amount of chloroauric acid. The formation of the first four ordered structures resulted from interfacial adsorption and self-assembly, and nucleation and epitaxial growth. The latter two structures were attributed to the water hole templating effect and spontaneous interfacial emulsification, respectively. This work provides insight into the self-assembly behavior of block copolymers at the interface and provides a facile approach for fabricating functional structures.

Magnetic-Core/Gold-Shell Nanoparticles for the Detection of Hydrophobic Chemical Contaminants

Magnetic-core/gold-shell nanoparticles (MAuNPs) are of interest for enabling rapid and portable detection of trace adulterants in complex media. Gold coating provides biocompatibility and facile functionalization, and a magnetic core affords analyte concentration and controlled deposition onto substrates for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. Iron oxide cores were synthesized and coated with gold by reduction of HAuCl₄ by NH₂OH. MAuNPs were grafted with polyethylene glycol (PEG) and/or functionalized with 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) and examined using a variety of microscopic, spectroscopic, magnetometric, and scattering techniques. For MAuNPs grafted with both PEG and 4-MBA, the order in which they were grafted impacted not only the graft density of the individual ligands, but also the overall graft density. Significant Raman signal enhancement of the model analyte, 4-MBA, was observed. This enhancement demonstrates the functionality of MAuNPs in direct detection of trace contaminants. The magnetic deposition rate of MAuNPs in chloroform and water was explored. The presence of 4-MBA slowed the mass deposition rate, and it was postulated that the rate disparity originated from differing NP-substrate surface interactions. These findings emphasize the importance of ligand choice in reference to the medium, target analyte, and substrate material, as well as functionalization procedure in the design of similar sensing platforms.

Large-Area Monolayer Films of Hexagonal Close-Packed Au@Ag Nanoparticles as Substrates for SERS-Based Quantitative Determination

In this work, quasi-spherical, small-sized, citrate-stabilized, core-shell (CS)-structured Au_5.5@Ag_m nanoparticles (NPs) with Ag shells of controlled thicknesses (m = 0, 1.25, 3.25, and 5.25) were successfully synthesized by using Au NPs with sizes of 5.5 nm as seeds. The as-prepared Au@Ag NPs after the phase transfer process were further used for the fabrication of high-quality large-area monolayer films of hexagonal close-packed Au@Ag nanoparticles (LAMF-HCP-Au@Ag NPs) by our improved self-assembly at the interface of toluene-DEG containing a proper amount of water (10% v/v). Moreover, after transferring the as-prepared LAMF-HCP-Au@Ag NPs onto polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrates (LAMF-HCP-Au@Ag NP@PDMS substrates), the resulting LAMF-HCP-Au@Ag NP@PDMS substrates can exhibit uniformity in the intensity of the surface-enhanced Raman scattering signals. Furthermore, taking LAMF-HCP-Au_5.5@Ag_5.25 NP@PDMS substrates as an example, they can achieve quantitative detection with high sensitivity for crystal violet (CV) and 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) in the range from 10^-12 to 10^-7 M and from 10^-13 to 10^-7 M, respectively. Also, their limit of detection (LOD) for CV and 4-ATP are 10^-12 and 10^-13 M, respectively. Especially, the LOD for CV can also be as low as 10^-13 M by extending the immersing time.

Centrifugation-induced assembly of dense hotspots based SERS substrate for enhanced Raman scattering and quenched fluorescence

Hanging (aggregation stuck to the centrifugal tube) in the centrifugation process is always regarded as an unwanted condition. In this work, we develop a centrifugation-induced assembly of dense hotspots surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates from the hanging phenomenon. We discovered interesting sintering-resistant behavior (maintain the sharp nanotip features) of star-like Au nanoparticles after centrifugation-induced assembly, which is in stark contrast with the sintering phenomenon of sphere-like nanoparticles. We also found that one side of centrifugal-induced Au assemblies is two-dimensional (2D, root mean square (rms) roughness down to ∼10 nm), while the other is three-dimensional (3D, rms roughness more than 100 nm). The close-packed feature of the Au assemblies makes them candidates as dense hotspots based SERS substrates. Through systematic investigation of SERS performance of centrifugation-induced assemblies with different morphology (star-like and sphere-like, 2D and 3D), it was found that the 3D side of star-like Au nanoparticles assembly exhibits the highest SERS enhancement together with quenched fluorescence. The star-like SERS substrate also displays high detection uniformity (with 10^-7M Rhodamine 6G) and a low detection limit (down to 10^-12M Rhodamine 6G).

Plasmonic Superstructure Arrays Fabricated by Laser Near-Field Reduction for Wide-Range SERS Analysis of Fluorescent Materials

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enables trace-detection for biosensing and environmental monitoring. Optimized enhancement of SERS can be achieved when the energy of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) is close to the energy of the Raman excitation wavelength. The LSPR can be tuned using a plasmonic superstructure array with controlled periods. In this paper, we develop a new technique based on laser near-field reduction to fabricate a superstructure array, which provides distinct features in the formation of periodic structures with hollow nanoclusters and flexible control of the LSPR in fewer steps than current techniques. Fabrication involves irradiation of a continuous wave laser or femtosecond laser onto a monolayer of self-assembled silica microspheres to grow silver nanoparticles along the silica microsphere surfaces by laser near-field reduction. The LSPR of superstructure array can be flexibly tuned to match the Raman excitation wavelengths from the visible to the infrared regions using different diameters of silica microspheres. The unique nanostructure formed can contribute to an increase in the sensitivity of SERS sensing. The fabricated superstructure array thus offers superior characteristics for the quantitative analysis of fluorescent perfluorooctanoic acid with a wide detection range from 11 ppb to 400 ppm.

Gold nanospheres assembly via corona discharge technique for flexible SERS substrate

Noble metal nanoparticles (NMNPs) assembly substrates with strongly enhanced local electromagnetic fields provide new possibilities for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensing. Although the external-electric-field-based self-assembly (EEFSA) strategy for decreasing NMNP gap in liquid phase is relatively developed, it is rarely described in solid phase. Here, by combining corona discharge technique (CDT) as a simple EEFSA approach on flexible substrate surface modification, a flexible SERS substrate medicated with gold nanospheres (AuNSs) is produced. Because of the CDT's peculiar discharge event, makes AuNSs aggregation simply achieved. The modified flexible SERS substrate is sensitive to the detection limit of ∼10^-5 mM for Rhodamine 6G (R6G), with a maximum enhancement factor of 2.79×10⁶. Furthermore, finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation confirms the SERS enhancement impact of AuNSs-based substrate. This study not only provides a low-cost, simple-to-process, high-yield, high sensitivity, and activity flexible SERS substrate, but also suggests a more practical and adaptable NMNPs self-assembly approach.

A Super-Boosted Hybrid Plasmonic Upconversion Process for Photodetection at 1550 nm Wavelength

A super-boosted hybrid plasmonic upconversion (UC) architecture comprising a hierarchical plasmonic upconversion (HPU) film and a polymeric microlens array (MLA) film is proposed for efficient photodetection at a wavelength of 1550 nm. Plasmonic metasurfaces and Au core-satellite nanoassembly (CSNA) films can strongly induce a more effective plasmonic effect by providing numerous hot spots in an intense local electromagnetic field up to wavelengths exceeding 1550 nm. Hence, significant UC emission enhancement is realized via the amplified plasmonic coupling of an HPU film comprising an Au CSNA and UC nanoparticles. Furthermore, an MLA polymer film is synergistically coupled with the HPU film, thereby focusing the incident near-infrared light in the micrometer region, including the plasmonic nanostructure area. Consequently, the plasmonic effect super-boosted by microfocusing the incident light, significantly lowers the detectable power limit of a device, resulting in superior sensitivity and responsivity at weak excitation powers. Finally, a triple-cation perovskite-based photodetector coupled with the hybrid plasmonic UC film exhibits the excellent values of responsivity and detectivity of 9.80 A W^-1 and 8.22 × 10¹² Jones at a weak power density of ≈0.03 mW cm^-2 , respectively, demonstrating that the device performance is enhanced by more than 10⁴ magnitudes over a reference sample.

Wafer-Scale and Cost-Effective Manufacturing of Controllable Nanogap Arrays for Highly Sensitive SERS Sensing

The metallic nanogap has been proved as an efficient architecture for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) applications. Although a lot of nanogap fabrication methods have been proposed in the last few decades, the economical and high-yield manufacturing of sub-10 nm gaps remains a challenge. Here, we present a convenient and cost-effective fabrication method for wafer-scale patterning of metallic nanogaps, which simply combines photolithographic metal patterning, swelling-induced nanocracking, and superimposition metal sputtering without requiring expensive nanofabrication equipment. By controlling the swelling time and metal deposition thickness, the gap size can be precisely defined, down to the sub-10 nm scale. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the fabricated nanogap array can be used as an excellent SERS substrate for molecule measurements and shows a high Raman enhancement factor of ∼10⁸ and a high sensitivity for the detection of rhodamine 6G (R6G) molecules, even down to 10^-14 M, indicating an extraordinary capability for single-molecule detection. Due to its high controllability and wafer-scale fabrication capability, this nanogap fabrication method offers a promising route for highly sensitive and economical SERS detections.

Application of two-dimensional layered materials in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)

2D materials are promising SERS substrates. Seven feasible strategies to improve the SERS performance of 2D substrate materials are summarized. The prospect of future progress in SERS and possible challenges of 2D layered materials are put forwarded.

Recent Advances in Metallic Nanoparticle Assemblies for Surface-Enhanced Spectroscopy

Robust and versatile strategies for the development of functional nanostructured materials often focus on assemblies of metallic nanoparticles. Research interest in such assemblies arises due to their potential applications in the fields of photonics and sensing. Metallic nanoparticles have received considerable recent attention due to their connection to the widely studied phenomenon of localized surface plasmon resonance. For instance, plasmonic hot spots can be observed within their assemblies. A useful form of spectroscopy is based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). This phenomenon is a commonly used in sensing techniques, and it works using the principle that scattered inelastic light can be greatly enhanced at a surface. However, further research is required to enable improvements to the SERS techniques. For example, one question that remains open is how to design uniform, highly reproducible, and efficiently enhancing substrates of metallic nanoparticles with high structural precision. In this review, a general overview on nanoparticle functionalization and the impact on nanoparticle assembly is provided, alongside an examination of their applications in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.

Sensing nanoparticle-protein corona using nanoparticle enhanced Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy signal enhancement

Recently nanoparticle enhanced Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (NELIBS) is getting a growing interest as an effective alternative method for improving the analytical performance of LIBS. On the other hand, the plasmonic effect during laser ablation can be used for a different task rather than elemental analysis. In this paper, the dependence of NELIBS emission signal enhancement on nanoparticle-protein solutions dried on a reference substrate (metallic titanium) was investigated. Two proteins were studied: Human Serum Albumin (HSA) and Cytochrome C (CytC). Both proteins have a strong affinity for the gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) due to the bonding between the single free exterior thiol (associated with a cysteine residue) and the gold surface to form a stable protein corona. Then, since the protein sizes are vastly different, a different number of protein units is needed to cover AuNP surface to form a protein layer. The NP-protein solution was dropped and dried onto the titanium substrate. Then the NELIBS signal enhancement of Ti emission lines was correlated to the solution characteristics as determined with Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) spectroscopy and Laser Doppler Electrophoresis (LDE) for ζ-potential determination. Moreover, the dried solutions were studied with TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy) for the inspection of the inter-particle distance. The structural effect of the NP-protein conjugates on the NELIBS signal reveals that NELIBS can be used to determine the number of protein units required to form the nanoparticle-protein corona with good accuracy. Although the investigated NP-protein systems are simple cases in biological applications, this work demonstrates, for the first time, a different use of NELIBS that is beyond elemental analysis and it opens the way for sensing the nanoparticle protein corona.

Reversible Self-Assembly of Gold Nanoparticles Based on Co-Functionalization with Zwitterionic and Cationic Binding Motifs*

We report a pH- and temperature-controlled reversible self-assembly of Au-nanoparticles (AuNPs) in water, based on their surface modification with cationic guanidiniocarbonyl pyrrole (GCP) and zwitterionic guanidiniocarbonyl pyrrole carboxylate (GCPZ) binding motifs. When both binding motifs are installed in a carefully balanced ratio, the resulting functionalized AuNPs self-assemble at pH 1, pH 7 and pH 13, whereas they disassemble at pH 3 and pH 11. Further disassembly can be achieved at elevated temperatures at pH 1 and pH 13. Thus, we were able to prepare functionalized nanoparticles that can be assembled/disassembled in seven alternating regimes, simply controlled by pH and temperature.

Broadband SERS Enhancement by DNA Origami Assembled Bimetallic Nanoantennas with Label-Free Single Protein Sensing

Engineering hotspots in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) through precisely controlled assembly of plasmonic nanostructures capable of expanding intense field enhancement are highly desirable to enhance the potentiality of SERS as a label-free optical tool for single molecule detection. Inspired by DNA origami technique, we constructed plasmonic dimer nanoantennas with a tunable gap decorated with Ag-coated Au nanostars on origami. Herein, we demonstrate the single-molecule SERS enhancements of three dyes with emission in different spectral regions after incorporation of single dye molecules in between two nanostars. The enhancement factors (EFs) achieved in the range of 10⁹-10¹⁰ for all the single dye molecules, under both resonant and nonresonant excitation conditions, would enable enhanced photostability during time-series measurement. We further successfully explored the potential of our designed nanoantennas to accommodate and detect a single thrombin protein molecule after selective placement in the wide nanogap of 10 nm. Our results suggest that such nanoantennas can serve as a broadband SERS enhancer and enable specific detection of target biological molecules with single-molecule sensitivity.

Size-controlled synthesis of cyclodextrin-capped gold nanoparticles for molecular recognition using surface-enhanced Raman scattering

Cyclodextrin (CD)-capped gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) can be applied in sensing, catalysis, and self-assembly processes due to their molecular recognition ability. As the plasmon resonance of AuNPs depends on their size, the size-controlled synthesis of CD-capped AuNPs is essential for the development of these applications. Herein, we successfully synthesized β-CD-capped AuNPs with diameters of 24-85 nm using a seed-mediated growth method. The AuNPs were prepared using a β-CD as both the reducing agent and the capping agent. Harsh reagents such as NaBH₄ and NaOH were not used. The size-controlled synthesis of β-CD-capped AuNPs was achieved by changing the amount of seed solution. We fabricated monolayers of β-CD-capped AuNPs by liquid-liquid interfacial self-assembly for application in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The SERS intensity is significantly improved by using larger β-CD-capped AuNPs. In addition, we found that β-CDs can detect pyrene with higher sensitivity than α-CDs on the basis of the difference in molecular recognition ability between α-CDs and β-CDs.

Exploring SERS from complex patterns fabricated by multi-exposure laser interference lithography

Designing uniform plasmonic surfaces in a large area is highly recommended for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). As periodic morphologies exhibit uniform SERS and optical tunability, diverse fabrication methods of periodic nanostructures have been reported for SERS applications. Laser interference lithography (LIL) is one of the most versatile tools since it can rapidly fabricate periodic patterns without the usage of photomasks. Here, we explore complex interference patterns for spatially uniform SERS sensors and its cost-effective fabrication method termed multi-exposure laser interference lithography (MELIL). MELIL can produce nearly periodic profiles along every direction confirmed by mathematical background, and in virtue of periodicity, we show that highly uniform Raman scattering (relative standard deviation <6%) can also be achievable in complex geometries as the conventional hole patterns. We quantitatively characterize the Raman enhancement of the MELIL complex patterns after two different metal deposition processes, Au e-beam evaporation and Ag electroplating, which results in 0.387 × 10⁵and 1.451 × 10⁵in enhancement factor respectively. This alternative, vacuum-free electroplating method realizes an even more cost-effective process with enhanced performance. We further conduct the optical simulation for MELIL complex patterns which exhibits the broadened and shifted absorption peaks. This result supports the potential of the expanded optical tunability of the suggested process.

Chiral plasmonic liquid crystal gold nanoparticles: self-assembly into a circular dichroism responsive helical lamellar superstructure

Owing to their proven and promising potential in various technological endeavors ranging from catalysis and sensing to invisibility cloaks made from metamaterials, chiral plasmonic superstructures resulting from the directed self-assembly of optically active metal nanoparticles (MNPs) have been pursued intensively in recent years. Several strategic efforts have emerged especially to accomplish advanced nanomaterials assembling into liquid crystalline (LC) helical structures, where MNPs are regularly packed in fluid/frozen arrays/layers or wires (columns). While the helical fluid columnar arrays (molecular wires) showing circular dichroism (CD) have been realized, the discovery of fluid chiral lamellar ordering, where the dielectric and conducting regimes are arranged alternatively, has hitherto remained highly elusive. Herein we report the first examples of monodisperse LC-gold NPs (LC-GNPs) self-assembling into a fluid/frozen lamellar structure exhibiting CD activity. Notably, these new, exceptional LC-GNPs have been realized by simple, hassle-free protocols that involve the room temperature addition of LC dimer-like arylamines to Au(iii), where the amines not only reduce Au(iii) to Au(0) but also bind strongly to the central GNP scaffold. Their molecular structure, mesomorphism, and ability to interact with circularly polarized light have been evidenced unambiguously and could play an important role in realizing metamaterials in the visible region.

Self-assembly of colloidal nanoparticles into 2D arrays at water-oil interfaces: rational construction of stable SERS substrates with accessible enhancing surfaces and tailored plasmonic response

Self-assembly at water-oil interfaces has been shown to be a cheap, convenient and efficient route to obtain densely packed layers of plasmonic nanoparticles which have small interparticle distances. This creates highly plasmonically active materials that can be used to give strong SERS enhancement and whose structure means that they are well suited to creating the highly stable, reproducible and uniform substrates that are needed to allow routine and accurate quantitative SERS measurements. A variety of methods have been developed to induce nanoparticle self-assembly at water-oil interfaces, fine tune the surface chemistry and adjust the position of the nanoparticles at the interface but only some of these are compatible with eventual use in SERS, where it is important that target molecules can access the active surface unimpeded. Similarly, it is useful to transform liquid plasmonic arrays into easy-to-handle free-standing solid films but these can only be used as solid SERS substrates if the process leaves the surface nanoparticles exposed. Here, we review the progress made in these research areas and discuss how these developments may lead towards achieving rational construction of tailored SERS substrates for sensitive and quantitative SERS analysis.

Catechol-driven self-assembly to fabricate highly ordered and SERS-active glycoadjuvant patterns

Detection of vaccine (adjuvant and antigen) is crucial for the fundamental studies of immunotherapy. In this work, the catechol-containing glycopolymer obtained by sunlight-induced RAFT polymerization was first designed to generate glycoadjuvant@AuNPs. Then, a simple and general self-assembled technique, catechol-driven self-assembly (CDSA), was developed to fabricate AuNP-based glycoadjuvant patterns, regardless of the size, shape and synthetic method of AuNPs. More importantly, highly ordered glycoadjuvant patterns could be easily formed by catechol-driven self-assembly under confinement, which exhibit a higher SERS signal amplification ability for the detection of carbohydrates (glycoadjuvant).

Exploring optical spectroscopic techniques and nanomaterials for virus detection

Viral infections pose significant health challenges globally by affecting millions of people worldwide and consequently resulting in a negative impact on both socioeconomic development and health. Corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a clear example of how a virus can have a global impact in the society and has demonstrated the limitations of detection and diagnostic capabilities globally. Another virus which has posed serious threats to world health is the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) which is a lentivirus of the retroviridae family responsible for causing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Even though there has been a significant progress in the HIV biosensing over the past years, there is still a great need for the development of point of care (POC) biosensors that are affordable, robust, portable, easy to use and sensitive enough to provide accurate results to enable clinical decision making. The aim of this study was to present a proof of concept for detecting HIV-1 pseudoviruses by using anti-HIV1 gp41 antibodies as capturing antibodies. In our study, glass substrates were treated with a uniform layer of silane in order to immobilize HIV gp41 antibodies on their surfaces. Thereafter, the HIV pseudovirus was added to the treated substrates followed by addition of anti-HIV gp41 antibodies conjugated to selenium nanoparticle (SeNPs) and gold nanoclusters (AuNCs). The conjugation of SeNPs and AuNCs to anti-HIV gp41 antibodies was characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and zeta potential while the surface morphology was characterized by fluorescence microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Raman spectroscopy. The UV-vis and zeta potential results showed that there was successful conjugation of SeNPs and AuNCs to anti-HIV gp41 antibodies and fluorescence microscopy showed that antibodies immobilized on glass substrates were able to capture intact HIV pseudoviruses. Furthermore, AFM also confirmed the capturing HIV pseudoviruses and we were able to differentiate between substrates with and without the HIV pseudoviruses. Raman spectroscopy confirmed the presence of biomolecules related to HIV and therefore this system has potential in HIV biosensing applications.

A laser metallurgy route for the batch preparation of mm-scale 3D silver/graphite heteronanoclusters in air

We report a batch preparation of mm-scale 3D Ag hetero-nanoclusters which exhibit an excellent surface plasmon resonance ability via facile laser metallurgy. Under laser irradiation, the porous AgI-based coordination network crystals were instantly converted into 3D graphite-encapsulated Ag hetero-nanoclusters with uniform sizes and gaps in several seconds. The obtained hetero-nanoclusters exhibited superior 3D confocal laser energy utilization compared with the other 0D, 1D and 2D SERS substrates, solving the bottleneck caused by laser focusing deviation in the SERS active depth. The mass-produced SERS devices were ultra-sensitive for the detection of life and industrial organic pollutants in terms of low detection and enriched capacity.

Synthesis of large gold nanoparticles with deformation twinnings by one-step seeded growth with Cu(ii)-mediated Ostwald ripening for determining nitrile and isonitrile groups

In this work, uniform and large gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) including quasi-spherical (QS) Au NPs with average diameters of 70 to 196 nm and trisoctahedral (TOH) Au NPs with average diameters of 140 to 195 nm were successfully synthesized by controlling the concentration of Cu2+ ions and the particle number of 3 nm Au-NP seeds, respectively, using a one-step seeded growth method with Cu2+-mediated Ostwald ripening. It is found that because of the concentration-dependent under-potential deposition of Cu2+ ions (CuUPD), 3 nm Au-NP seeds are firstly changed into Au NPs with a controlled QS- or TOH shape at the initial growth stage, followed by the conformal growth of Au atoms onto the initially formed Au NPs due to Cu2+-mediated Ostwald ripening, in which the extra Au atoms come from the dissolution of in situ Au nuclei by the unavoidable self-nucleation. Moreover, the as-prepared QS Au NPs with a rough surface exhibit a better SERS performance for physically adsorbed probes (crystal violet, CV) than the TOH Au NPs with sharp tips and with a comparable size. Furthermore, the as-prepared QS Au NPs can be used to distinguish nitrile and isonitrile groups by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) due to the presence of deformation twinnings. Thus, the as-prepared QS Au NPs with a rough surface and deformation twinnings can be further used as templates for the fabrication of bimetallic materials with multi-functionalities.

Controlled Phase Behavior of Thermally Sensitive Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide/ionic liquid) with Embedded Au Nanoparticles

We have synthesized a series of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide/ionic liquid) with deposited Au nanoparticles. The size of the nanoparticle range was varied from 10 to 35 nm, and these were characterized by transmission electron microscopy analysis. Ionic liquids (IL) were chosen by varying the polymerizable unit to be both in cationic (allyl) and anionic (acrylate) moiety. One-pot polymerization was done with N-isopropylacrylamide and IL using ammonium persulphate as the initiator, to which were added already prepared Au NPs. These thermally sensitive composites formed, possessed reversible swelling/deswelling abilities in water, and demonstrated a reversible visible phase transition, which was detected by differential scanning calorimetric measurements. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) showed dependency on the size of nanoparticles and the IL independently. It was seen that the LCST of PNIPAM-based composite films can be tuned from 32 °C to a range of 23-67 °C by choosing the desired Au NP size, its concentration and kind of IL.

Assembly of gold nanoparticles using turnip yellow mosaic virus as an in-solution SERS sensor

A common challenge in nanotechnology is the conception of materials with well-defined nanoscale structure. In recent years, virus capsids have been used as templates to create a network to organize 3D nano-objects, building thus new functional nanomaterials and then devices. In this work, we synthetized 3D gold nanoclusters and we used them as Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) sensor substrates in solution. In practice, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were grafted on turnip yellow mosaic virus (TYMV) capsid, an icosahedral plant virus. Two strategies were considered to covalently bind AuNPs of different sizes (5, 10 and 20 nm) to TYMV. After purification by agarose electrophoresis and digestion by agarase, the resulting nano-bio-hybrid AuNP-TYVM was characterized by different tools. Typically, dynamic light scattering (DLS) confirmed the grafting through the hydrodynamic size increase by comparing AuNPs alone to AuNP-TYMV (up to 33, 50 and 68 nm for 5, 10 and 20 nm sized AuNPs, respectively) or capsids alone (28 nm). Transmission electronic microscopy (TEM) observations revealed that AuNPs were arranged with 5-fold symmetry, in agreement with their grafting around icosahedral capsids. Moreover, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy showed a red-shift of the plasmon absorption band on the grafted AuNP spectrum (530 nm) compared to that of the non-grafted one (520 nm). Finally, by recording in solution the Raman spectra of a dissolved probe molecule, namely 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (BPE), in the presence of AuNP-TYVM and bare AuNPs or capsids, a net enhancement of the Raman signal was observed when BPE is adsorbed on AuNP-TYVM. The analytical enhancement factor (AEF) value of AuNP-TYMV is 5 times higher than that of AuNPs. These results revealed that AuNPs organized around virus capsid are able to serve as in-solution SERS-substrates, which is very interesting for the conception of ultrasensitive sensors in biological media.

3D-assembly of gold nanoparticles onto turnip yellow mosaic virus.

Interferometric time- and energy-resolved photoemission electron microscopy for few-femtosecond nanoplasmonic dynamics

We report a time-resolved normal-incidence photoemission electron microscope with an imaging time-of-flight detector using ∼7-fs near-infrared laser pulses and a phase-stabilized interferometer for studying ultrafast nanoplasmonic dynamics via nonlinear photoemission from metallic nanostructures. The interferometer's stability (35 ± 6 as root-mean-square from 0.2 Hz to 40 kHz) as well as on-line characterization of the driving laser field, which is a requirement for nanoplasmonic near-field reconstruction, is discussed in detail. We observed strong field enhancement and few-femtosecond localized surface plasmon lifetimes at a monolayer of self-assembled gold nanospheres with ∼40 nm diameter and ∼2 nm interparticle distance. A wide range of plasmon resonance frequencies could be simultaneously detected in the time domain at different nanospheres, which are distinguishable already within the first optical cycle or as close as about ±1 fs around time-zero. Energy-resolved imaging (microspectroscopy) additionally revealed spectral broadening due to strong-field or space charge effects. These results provide a clear path toward visualizing optically excited nanoplasmonic near-fields at ultimate spatiotemporal resolution.

Recent Advances in 2D Inorganic Nanomaterials for SERS Sensing

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy is a powerful and sensitive analytical tool that has found application in chemical and biomolecule analysis and environmental monitoring. Since its discovery in the early 1970s, a variety of materials ranging from noble metals to nanostructured materials have been employed as surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates. In recent years, 2D inorganic materials have found wide use in the development of SERS-based chemical sensors owing to their unique thickness dependent physico-chemical properties with enhanced chemical-based charge-transfer processes. Here, recent advances in the application of various 2D inorganic nanomaterials, including graphene, boron nitride, semiconducting metal oxides, and transition metal chalcogenides, in chemical detection via SERS are presented. The background of the SERS concept, including its basic theory and sensing mechanism, along with the salient features of different nanomaterials used as substrates in SERS, extending from monometallic nanoparticles to nanometal oxides, is comprehensively discussed. The importance of 2D inorganic nanomaterials in SERS enhancement, along with their application toward chemical detection, is explained in detail with suitable examples and illustrations. In conclusion, some guidelines are presented for the development of this promising field in the future.

Seed-Mediated Electroless Deposition of Gold Nanoparticles for Highly Uniform and Efficient SERS Enhancement

A seed-mediated electroless deposition (SMED) approach for fabrication of large-area and uniform gold nanoparticle films as efficient and reproducible as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates was presented. This approach involved a seeding pretreatment procedure and a subsequent growth step. The former referred to activation of polylysine-coated glass slides in gold seed solution, and the latter required a careful control of the reactant concentration and reaction time. With the aid of gold seeds and appropriate reaction conditions, a large-area and uniform nanofilm with evenly distributed gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) was formed on the surface of the substrates after adding a mixed solution containing ascorbic acid and trisodium citrate. The morphology of the Au nanofilm was examined by scanning electron microscopy. The size evolution of Au NPs on the surface of the substrates was analyzed in detail. The nanofilm substrate was prepared by reaction conditions of the seeded activation process: 10 mL ascorbic acid and trisodium citrate mixture and 30 min of soaking time, which exhibited an excellent uniformity and reproducibility of SERS enhancement with relative standard deviation (RSD) values of less than 8% (particularly, a RSD value of 3% can be reached for the optimized measurement). Compared to the common electroless deposition, the seed-mediated electroless deposition possessed inherent advantages in controllability, reproducibility, and economic benefit.

Hierarchical Au nanoclusters electrodeposited on amine-terminated ITO glass as a SERS-active substrate for the reliable and sensitive detection of serotonin in a Tris-HCl buffer solution

In this study, a SERS-active substrate was fabricated by electrodepositing hierarchical Au nanostructures on amine-terminated ITO (indium tin oxide) glass to achieve an enhanced Raman signal of 5-HT.
