Biosynthesis of Bimetallic Au–Ag Nanoparticles Using Escherichia coli and its Biomedical Applications

A dual-mode lateral flow immunoassay by ultrahigh signal-to background ratio SERS probes for nitrofurazone metabolites ultrasensitive detection

In this work, an ultra-sensitive lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) with SERS/colorimetric dual signal mode was constructed for the detection of nitrofurazone metabolites, an antibiotic prohibited in animal-origin foods. Au@4-MBN@AgNRs nano-sandwich structural signal tag integrates the unique advantages of high signal-to-background ratio and anti-matrix interference through geometric control of SERS tag and nanoengineering adjustment of chemical composition. Under the optimal conditions, the detection limits of nitrofurazone metabolites by SERS/colorimetric dual-mode LFIA were 20 pg/mL (colorimetric mode) and 0.08 pg/mL (SERS mode). Excitingly, the vLOD of the colorimetric signal improved by a factor of 100 compared to Au NPs-based LFIA. In this study, the proposed dual-mode LFIA was successfully applied to the on-site real-time detection of honey, milk powder, and chicken. It is anticipated that with low background interference and anti-matrix interference output signal, our proposed dual-mode strategy can pave an innovative pathway for the fabrication of a powerful biosensor.

External Stimuli-Responsive Strategies for Surface Modification of Orthopedic Implants: Killing Bacteria and Enhancing Osteogenesis

Bacterial infection and insufficient osteogenic activity are the main causes of orthopedic implant failure. Conventional surface modification methods are difficult to meet the requirements for long-term implant placement. In order to better regulate the function of implant surfaces, especially to improve both the antibacterial and osteogenic activity, external stimuli-responsive (ESR) strategies have been employed for the surface modification of orthopedic implants. External stimuli act as "smart switches" to regulate the surface interactions with bacteria and cells. The balance between antibacterial and osteogenic capabilities of implant surfaces can be achieved through these specific ESR manifestations, including temperature changes, reactive oxygen species production, controlled release of bioactive molecules, controlled release of functional ions, etc. This Review summarizes the recent progress on different ESR strategies (based on light, ultrasound, electric, and magnetic fields) that can effectively balance antibacterial performance and osteogenic capability of orthopedic implants. Furthermore, the current limitations and challenges of ESR strategies for surface modification of orthopedic implants as well as future development direction are also discussed.

Promising applications of phyto-fabricated silver nanoparticles: Recent trends in biomedicine

The prospective contribution of phyto-nanotechnology to the synthesis of silver nanomaterials for biomedical purposes is attracting increasing interest across the world. Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) through plants has been extensively examined recently, and it is now seen to be a green and efficient path for future exploitation and development of practical nano-factories. Fabrication of Ag-NPs is the process involves use of plant extracts/phyto-compounds (e.g.alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds) to synthesise nanoparticles in more economical and feasible. Several findings concluded that in the field of medicine, Ag-NPs play a major role in pharmacotherapy (infection and cancer). Indeed, they exhibits novel properties but the reason is unclear (except some theoretical interpretation e.g. size, shape and morphology). But recent technological advancements help to address these questions by predicting the unique properties (composition and origin) by characterizing physical, chemical and biological properties. Due to increased list of publications and their application in the field of agriculture, industries and pharmaceuticals, issues relating to toxicity are unavoidable and question of debate. The present reviews aim to find out the role of plant extracts to synthesise Ag-NPs. It provides an overview of various phytocompounds and their role in the field of biomedicine (antibacterial, antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory etc.). In addition, this review also especially focused on various applications such as role in infection, oxidative stress, application in medical engineering, diagnosis and therapy, medical devices, orthopedics, wound healing and dressings. Additionally, the toxic effects of Ag-NPs in cell culture, tissue of different model organism, type of toxic reactions and regulation implemented to reduce associated risk are discussed critically. Addressing all above explanations, this review focus on the detailed properties of plant mediated Ag-NPs, its impact on biology, medicine and their commercial properties as well as toxicity.

A review of physical, chemical and biological synthesis methods of bimetallic nanoparticles and applications in sensing, water treatment, biomedicine, catalysis and hydrogen storage

Additionally, the article discusses current trends, actionable recommendations, and the importance of synthetic analysis for industry players looking to optimize manufacturing techniques for specific applications. The article also evaluates the pros and cons of various fabrication methods, highlighting the potential of plant extract synthesis for mass production of capped BNPs. However, it warns that this method may not be suitable for certain applications requiring ligand-free surfaces. In contrast, physical methods like laser ablation offer better control and reactivity, especially for applications where ligand-free surfaces are critical. The report underscores the environmental benefits of plant extract synthesis compared to chemical methods that use hazardous chemicals and pose risks to extraction, production, and disposal. The article emphasizes the need for life cycle assessment (LCA) articles in the literature, given the growing volume of research on nanotechnology materials. This article caters to researchers at all stages and applies to various fields applying nanomaterials.

Surface-Modified Silver Nanoparticles and Their Encapsulation in Liposomes Can Treat MCF-7 Breast Cancer Cells

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have emerged as a promising tool for cancer treatment due to their unique physicochemical and biological properties. However, their clinical applications are limited by their potential cytotoxicity caused due to oxidation stress and non-specific cellular uptake pathways. To overcome these barriers, surface modifications of AgNPs have been proposed as an effective strategy to enhance their biocompatibility and specificity toward cancer cells. In this study, AgNPs were synthesised using the chemical reduction method and subsequently conjugated with various capping agents such as Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA). Further, this study involves the synthesis of liposomes by using dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine lipid (DPPC) and cholesterol to increase the biocompatibility and bioavailability of AgNPs to MCF-7 breast cancer cells. In vitro, cytotoxicity studies were performed to determine which surface modification method exhibited the highest cytotoxic effect on the MCF-7 breast cancer cells, which was determined through the MTT assay. The AgNPs conjugated with BSA exhibited the highest cytotoxicity at the lowest dosage, with an IC50 of 2.5 μL/mL. The BSA-AgNPs induced a dose-dependent rise in cytotoxicity through the enhancement of nucleophilic dissolution of the AgNPs in cancer cells. In comparison, the unmodified AgNPs had an IC50 value of 3.0 μL/mL, while the PVP-modified AgNPs had an IC50 of 4.24 μL/mL. AgNPs encapsulated in liposomes had an IC50 value of 5.08 μL/mL, which shows that the encapsulation of AgNPs in liposomes controls their entry into cancer cells. The findings of this research have provided insights into the potential use of surface-modified AgNPs and liposomal encapsulated AgNPs as novel therapeutic tools to overcome the conventional treatment limitations of breast cancer cells.

Photothermal/Photoacoustic Therapy Combined with Metal-Based Nanomaterials for the Treatment of Microbial Infections

The increased spread and persistence of bacterial drug-resistant phenotypes remains a public health concern and has contributed significantly to the challenge of combating antibiotic resistance. Nanotechnology is considered an encouraging strategy in the fight against antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections; this new strategy should improve therapeutic efficacy and minimize side effects. Evidence has shown that various nanomaterials with antibacterial performance, such as metal-based nanoparticles (i.e., silver, gold, copper, and zinc oxide) have intrinsic antibacterial properties. These antibacterial agents, such as those made of metal oxides, carbon nanomaterials, and polymers, have been used not only to improve antibacterial efficacy but also to reduce bacterial drug resistance due to their interaction with bacteria and their photophysical properties. These nanostructures have been used as effective agents for photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) to kill bacteria locally by heating or the controlled production of reactive oxygen species. Additionally, PTT or PDT therapies have also been combined with photoacoustic (PA) imaging to simultaneously improve treatment efficacy, safety, and accuracy. In this present review, we present, on the one hand, a summary of research highlighting the use of PTT-sensitive metallic nanomaterials for the treatment of bacterial and fungal infections, and, on the other hand, an overview of studies showing the PA-mediated theranostic functionality of metal-based nanomaterials.

Biogenic Copper Selenide Nanoparticles for Near-Infrared Photothermal Therapy Application

Near-infrared (NIR) photothermal therapy (PTT) is attractive for cancer treatment but is currently restricted by limited availability and insufficient NIR-II photoactivity of photothermal agents, for which artificial nanomaterials are usually used. Here, we report the first use of biogenic nanomaterials for PTT application. A fine-controlled extracellular biosynthesis of copper selenide nanoparticles (bio-Cu_2-xSe) by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 was realized. The resulting bio-Cu_2-xSe, with fine sizes (∼35.5 nm) and high product purity, exhibited 76.9% photothermal conversion efficiency under 1064 nm laser irradiation, outperforming almost all the existing counterparts. The protein capping also imparted good biocompatibility to bio-Cu_2-xSe to favor a safe PTT application. The in vivo PTT with injected bio-Cu_2-xSe in mice (without extraction nor further modification) showed 87% tumor ablation without impairing the normal organisms. Our work not only opens a green route to synthesize the NIR-II photothermal nanomaterial but may also lay a basis for the development of bacteria-nanomaterial hybrid therapy technologies.

Recent advances in responsive antibacterial materials: design and application scenarios

Bacterial infection is one of the leading causes of death globally, although modern medicine has made considerable strides in the past century. As traditional antibiotics are suffering from the emergence of drug resistance, new antibacterial strategies are of great interest. Responsive materials are appealing alternatives that have shown great potential in combating resistant bacteria and avoiding the side effects of traditional antibiotics. In this review, the responsive antibacterial materials are introduced in terms of stimulus signals including intrinsic (pH, enzyme, ROS, etc.) and extrinsic (light, temperature, magnetic fields, etc.) stimuli. Their biomedical applications in therapeutics and medical devices are then discussed. Finally, the author's perspective of the challenge and the future of such a system is provided.

A review on synthesis methods and recent applications of nanomaterial in wastewater treatment: Challenges and future perspectives

Freshwater has been incessantly polluted by various activities such as rapid industrialization, fast growth of population and agricultural activities. Water pollution is considered as one the major threatens to human health and aquatic bodies which causes various severe harmful diseases including gastrointestinal disorders, asthma, cancer, etc. The polluted wastewater could be treated by different conventional and advanced methodologies. Amongst them, adsorption is the most utilized low cost, efficient technique to treat and remove the harmful pollutants from the wastewater. The efficiency of adsorption mainly depends on the surface properties such as functional group availability and surface area of the adsorbents used. Since various waste-based carbon derivatives are utilized as adsorbents for harmful pollutants removal; nanomaterials are employed as effective adsorbents in recent times due to its excellent surface properties. This review presents an overview of the different types of nanomaterials such as nano-particles, nanotubes, nano-sheets, nano-rods, nano-spheres, quantum dots, etc. which have been synthesized by different chemical and green synthesis methodologies using plants, microorganisms, biomolecules and carbon derivatives, metals and metal oxides and polymers. By concentrating on potential research difficulties, this study offers a new viewpoint on fundamental field of nanotechnology for wastewater treatment applications. This review paper critically reviewed the synthesis of nanomaterials more importantly green synthesis and their applications in wastewater treatment to remove the harmful pollutants such as heavy metals, dyes, pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, etc.

Bimetallic silver-platinum (AgPt) nanoparticles and chitosan fabricated cotton gauze for enhanced antimicrobial and wound healing applications

Wound healing is a significant clinical and socioeconomic problem that is often affected by microbial infection. Inappropriate monitoring leads to unfavorable concerns for surrounding tissues. Cotton gauzes have been used as low-cost wound dressing material but prolong healing owing to strong adherence and secondary microbial infections. Hence, we prepared the bimetallic (silver and platinum) nanoparticles (AgPt NPs) using citric acid (CA) as a reducing agent and then coated them on chitosan (CS) fabricated cotton gauze (CG) for enhanced antimicrobial and wound healing applications. The synthesis of AgPt NPs was evidenced UV-Visible spectroscopy, FE-TEM, and elemental mapping analysis. The average size of AgPt NPs was 21.48 ± 6.32 nm and spherical in structure. Besides, AgPt NPs showed a hydrodynamic size of 63.64 (d.nm) with a polydispersity index of 0.220 and a zeta potential of -28.1 mV. The FT-IR and XRD analysis demonstrated the functional changes and crystalline properties of AgPt NPs. The antimicrobial efficacy of AgPt NPs was significantly higher than standard antibiotic against bacteria, yeast, and filamentous fungi. Furthermore, the AgPt NPs-CS/CG exhibited a substantial hydrophobic nature with better antimicrobial and antioxidant activity. In addition, pH-dependent Ag and Pt release from the AgPt NPs-CS/CG was determined by ICP-MS analysis. The treatment of AgPt NPs-CS/CG augmented the in vitro wound healing in mouse embryonic fibroblast cells (NIH3T3). Hence, we concluded that AgPt NPs-CS/CG could be used to enhance antimicrobial and wound healing applications.

Recent developments in the use of gold and silver nanoparticles in biomedicine

Gold and silver nanoparticles (NPs) are widely used in the biomedical research both in the therapeutic and the sensing/diagnostics fronts. Both metals share some common optical properties with surface plasmon resonance being the most widely exploited property in therapeutics and diagnostics. Au NPs exhibit excellent light‐to‐heat conversion efficiencies and hence have found applications primarily in precision oncology, while Ag NPs have excellent antibacterial properties which can be harnessed in biomaterials' design. Both metals constitute excellent biosensing platforms owing to their plasmonic properties and are now routinely used in various optical platforms. The utilization of Au and Ag NPs in the COVID‐19 pandemic was rapidly expanded mostly in biosensing and point‐of‐care platforms and to some extent in therapeutics. In this review article, the main physicochemical properties of Au and Ag NPs are discussed with selective examples from the recent literature.

Colorimetric sensing of glucose and GSH using core-shell Cu/Au nanoparticles with peroxidase mimicking activity

The catalytic properties of bimetallic nanoparticles have been widely studied by researchers in many fields. In this paper, core-shell Cu/Au nanoparticles (Cu/Au NPs) were synthesized by a simple and mild one-pot method, and their peroxidase activity was proved by catalyzing the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) with color change to blue. The change of solution color and absorbance strongly depends on the concentration of H₂O₂, so it can be used for direct detection of H₂O₂ and indirect detection of glucose. What's more, GSH can efficiently react with the hydroxyl radicals from H₂O₂ catalyzed by core-shell Cu/Au NPs to inhibit the production of ox-TMB. Thus, the concentration of GSH can be determined by the decrease in the absorbance of the solution at 652 nm. The results showed that our proposed strategy had good detection range and detection limit for the detection of glucose and GSH. This method has been used in the detection of practical samples and has great application potential in environmental monitoring and clinical diagnosis.

Effects of biodegradable biomedical porous MnO2 nanoparticles on blood components and functions

In recent years, manganese dioxide (MnO₂) nanoparticles with unique physicochemical properties have been widely used in many biomedical fields, such as biosensors, contrast agents, tumor therapy, and drug delivery. From these applications, MnO₂ nanoparticles have great clinical translation potential. However, by contrast, the in vitro and in vivo biosafety of MnO₂ nanoparticles have been deeply and thoroughly clarified for the clinical translation, which hinders their clinical applications. In this work, we deeply investigated the blood safety of MnO₂ nanoparticles by conducting a series of in vitro and in vivo experiments. These included the effects of MnO₂ nanoparticles on morphology of red blood cells, activation of platelets, coagulation functions, and toxicity of key organs. The obtained results show that these effects displayed a concentration-dependent manner of MnO₂ nanoparticles. Different safe concentration ranges could be found in the different experimental index. This study provides important guidance for the specific biomedical applications of MnO₂ nanoparticles, greatly accelerating their laboratory development and clinical translation.

Enhanced Plasmon Based Ag and Au Nanosystems and Their Improved Biomedical Impacts

Numerous specialists and academics have backed the improved physicochemical characteristics of metal substrate (Ag, Au) based composite nanoparticles for a number of applications, including pharmaceuticals, optoelectronics, and environmental impact. Insights of Ag and Au NPs-based nanomaterials will be discussed, as well as important production, physicochemical, and biotechnological characteristics. The plasmon capacities of Ag and Au NPs, along with their customisable form, scale, and surface modification could be described by specified geometries and constituent contents. It was revealed that interaction dynamics of Ag and Au implanted nanomaterials with dopants/defects ratios seem to be more effective in stimulating pathogens by interrupting biochemical reactions. As a result, we focus on defect science in Ag and Au-based nanoscale materials, taking into account surface morphology, ionic packing, and chemical phase assessment. This chapter will cover the important optical, geometrical, and physicochemical features of Ag and Au nanomaterials, and their pharmacological significance.

2D Personality of Multifunctional Carbon Nitrides towards Enhanced Catalytic Performance in Energy Storage and Remediation

Numerous scholars in the scientific and management areas have been overly focused on contemporary breakthroughs in two-dimensional objects for multiple prospective applications. Photochemical and electrocatalytic functions of integrated circuits associated with multi-component tools have been enhanced by designing the macro- and microstructures of the building blocks. Therefore, the current research attempts to explore a larger spectrum of layered graphitic carbon nitrides (g-C3N4) and their derivatives as an efficient catalyst. By executing systematic manufacturing, optimization, and evaluation of its relevance towards astonishing energy storage devices, adsorption chemistry, and remediation, many researchers have focused on the coupling of such 2D carbon nitrides combined with suitable elementals. Hybrid carbon nitrides have been promoted as reliable 2D combinations for the enhanced electrophotocatalytic functionalities, proved by experimental observations and research outputs. By appreciating the modified structural, surface, and physicochemical characteristics of the carbon nitrides, we aim to report a systematic overview of the g-C3N4 materials for the application of energy storages and environments. It has altered energy band gap, thermal stability, remarkable dimensional texturing, and electrochemistry, and therefore detailed studies are highlighted by discussing the chemical architectures and atomic alternation of g-C3N4 (2D) structures.

Green synthesis of biocompatible core–shell (Au–Ag) and hybrid (Au–ZnO and Ag–ZnO) bimetallic nanoparticles and evaluation of their potential antibacterial, antidiabetic, antiglycation and anticancer activities

The fabrication of bimetallic nanoparticles (BNPs) using plant extracts is applauded since it is an environmentally and biologically safe method. In this research, Manilkara zapota leaf extract was utilized to bioreduce metal ions for the production of therapeutically important core–shell Au–Ag and hybrid (Au–ZnO and Ag–ZnO) BNPs. The phytochemical profiling of the leaf extract in terms of total phenolic and flavonoid content is attributed to its high free radical scavenging activity. FTIR data also supported the involvement of these phytochemicals (polyphenols, flavonoids, aromatic compounds and alkynes) in the synthesis of BNPs. Whereas, TEM and XRD showed the formation of small sized (16.57 nm) spherical shaped core–shell Au–Ag BNPs and ZnO nano-needles with spherical AuNPs (48.32 nm) and ZnO nano-rods with spherical AgNP (19.64 nm) hybrid BNPs. The biological activities of BNPs reinforced the fact that they show enhanced therapeutic efficacy as compared to their monometallic components. All BNPs showed comparable antibacterial activities as compared to standard tetracycline discs. While small sized Au–Ag BNPs were most effective in killing human hepato-cellular carcinoma cells (HepG2) in terms of lowest cell viability, highest intracellular ROS/RNS production, loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, induction of caspase-3 gene expression and enhanced caspase-3/7 activity. BNPs also effectively inhibited advanced glycation end products and carbohydrate digesting enzymes which can be used as a nano-medicine for aging and diabetes. The most important finding was the permissible biocompatibility of these BNPs towards brine shrimp larvae and human RBCs, which suggests their environmental and biological safety. This research study gives us insight into the promise of using a green route to synthesize commercially important BNPs with enhanced therapeutic efficacy as compared to conventional treatment options.

Structure and Properties of Polyoxymethylene/Silver/Maleic Anhydride-Grafted Polyolefin Elastomer Ternary Nanocomposites

In the present study, silver (Ag) nanoparticles and maleic anhydride-grafted polyolefin elastomer (MAH-g-POE) were used as enhancement additives to improve the performance of the polyoxymethylene (POM) homopolymer. Specifically, the POM/Ag/MAH-g-POE ternary nanocomposites with varying Ag nanoparticles and MAH-g-POE contents were prepared by a melt mixing method. The effects of the additives on the microstructure, thermal stability, crystallization behavior, mechanical properties, and dynamic mechanical thermal properties of the ternary nanocomposites were studied. It was found that the MAH-g-POE played a role in the bridging of the Ag nanoparticles and POM matrix and improved the interfacial adhesion between the Ag nanoparticles and POM matrix, owing to the good compatibility between Ag/MAH-g-POE and the POM matrix. Moreover, it was found that the combined addition of Ag nanoparticles and MAH-g-POE significantly enhanced the thermal stability, crystallization properties, and mechanical properties of the POM/Ag/MAH-g-POE ternary nanocomposites. When the Ag/MAH-g-POE content was 1 wt.%, the tensile strength reached the maximum value of 54.78 MPa. In addition, when the Ag/MAH-g-POE content increased to 15wt.%, the elongation at break reached the maximum value of 64.02%. However, when the Ag/MAH-g-POE content further increased to 20 wt.%, the elongation at break decreased again, which could be attributed to the aggregation of excessive Ag nanoparticles forming local defects in the POM/Ag/MAH-g-POE ternary nanocomposites. Furthermore, when the Ag/MAH-g-POE content was 20 wt.%, the maximum decomposition temperature of POM/Ag/MAH-g-POE ternary nanocomposites was 398.22 °C, which was 71.39 °C higher than that of pure POM. However, compared with POM, the storage modulus of POM/Ag/MAH-g-POE ternary nanocomposites decreased with the Ag/MAH-g-POE content, because the MAH-g-POE elastomer could reduce the rigidity of POM.

Tumor-targeting inorganic nanomaterials synthesized by living cells

Inorganic nanomaterials (NMs) have shown potential application in tumor-targeting theranostics, owing to their unique physicochemical properties. Some living cells in nature can absorb surrounding ions in the environment and then convert them into nanomaterials after a series of intracellular/extracellular biochemical reactions. Inspired by that, a variety of living cells have been used as biofactories to produce metallic/metallic alloy NMs, metalloid NMs, oxide NMs and chalcogenide NMs, which are usually automatically capped with biomolecules originating from the living cells, benefitting their tumor-targeting applications. In this review, we summarize the biosynthesis of inorganic nanomaterials in different types of living cells including bacteria, fungi, plant cells and animal cells, accompanied by their application in tumor-targeting theranostics. The mechanisms involving inorganic-ion bioreduction and detoxification as well as biomineralization are emphasized. Based on the mechanisms, we describe the size and morphology control of the products via the modulation of precursor ion concentration, pH, temperature, and incubation time, as well as cell metabolism by a genetic engineering strategy. The strengths and weaknesses of these biosynthetic processes are compared in terms of the controllability, scalability and cooperativity during applications. Future research in this area will add to the diversity of available inorganic nanomaterials as well as their quality and biosafety.

Gold Nanomaterials as a Promising Integrated Tool for Diagnosis and Treatment of Pathogenic Infections-A Review

This review summarizes research on functionalized gold nanomaterials as pathogen detection sensors and pathogen elimination integrated tools. After presenting the challenge of current severe threat from pathogenic bacteria and the increasingly serious growth rate of drug resistance, the first section mainly introduces the conspectus of gold nanostructures from synthesis, characterization, physicochemical properties and applications of gold nanomaterials. The next section deals with gold nanomaterials-based pathogen detection sensors such as colorimetric sensors, fluorescence sensors and Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering sensors. We then discuss strategies based on gold nanomaterials for eliminating pathogenic infections, such as the dual sterilization strategy for grafting gold nanomaterials with antibacterial substances, photothermal antibacterial and photodynamic antibacterial methods. The fourth part briefly introduces the comprehensive strategy for diagnosis and sterilization of pathogen infection based on gold nanomaterials, such as the diagnosis and treatment strategy for pathogen infection using Roman signals real-time monitoring and photothermal sterilization. A concluding section that summarizes the current status and challenges of the novel diagnosis and treatment integrated strategy for pathogenic infections, gives an outlook on potential future perspectives.

Recent progress in plant-gold nanoparticles fabrication methods and bio-applications

The preparation of gold nanoparticles via green routes applying plant extracts as the reducing agents and stabilizers has received broad interest in the last decades. Plant-gold nanoparticles have been well-developed and applied in biochemical and medical research, but there are still challenges that must be overcome. The main challenges include the construction of chemically-robust plant-gold nanoparticles, the precise design of biomimetic surfaces to fabricate nanozymes with high catalytic activities, and the development of approaches to construct biosensors with high selectivities and sensitivities. The cores and surfaces of plant-gold nanoparticles must be considered, as well as their catalytic activities and biosensing mechanisms. This review highlights the latest achievements in plant-gold nanoparticle preparation, heterogeneous nucleation, and surface functionalization, while also focusing on their optical properties and various biological and catalytic activities. Moreover, their antioxidant and cell apoptosis mechanisms, and biological activities are described. Plant-gold nanoparticles have shown great potential in high-performance analytical assays, high-activity catalysts, effective intracellular imaging, and clinical treatment.

Plasmonically Modulated Gold Nanostructures for Photothermal Ablation of Bacteria

With the wide utilization of antibiotics, antibiotic-resistant bacteria have been often developed more frequently to cause potential global catastrophic consequences. Emerging photothermal ablation has been attracting extensive research interest for quick/effective eradication of pathogenic bacteria from contaminated surroundings and infected body. In this field, anisotropic gold nanostructures with tunable size/morphologies have been demonstrated to exhibit their outstanding photothermal performance through strong plasmonic absorption of near-infrared (NIR) light, efficient light to heat conversion, and easy surface modification for targeting bacteria. To this end, this review first introduces thermal treatment of infectious diseases followed by photothermal therapy via heat generation on NIR-absorbing gold nanostructures. Then, the usual synthesis and spectral features of diversified gold nanostructures and composites are systematically overviewed with the emphasis on the importance of size, shape, and composition to achieve strong plasmonic absorption in NIR region. Further, the innovated photothermal applications of gold nanostructures are comprehensively demonstrated to combat against bacterial infections, and some constructive suggestions are also discussed to improve photothermal technologies for practical applications.

Mechanism of Gold-Silver Alloy Nanoparticle Formation by Laser Coreduction of Gold and Silver Ions in Solution

Photochemical reduction of aqueous Ag⁺ and [AuCl₄]^- into alloy Au-Ag nanoparticles (Au-Ag NPs) with intense laser pulses is a green synthesis approach that requires no toxic chemical reducing agents or stabilizers; however size control without capping agents still remains a challenge. Hydrated electrons produced in the laser plasma can reduce both [AuCl₄]^- and Ag⁺ to form NPs, but hydroxyl radicals (OH·) in the plasma inhibit Ag NP formation by promoting the back-oxidation of Ag⁰ into Ag⁺. In this work, femtosecond laser reduction is used to synthesize Au-Ag NPs with controlled compositions by adding the OH· scavenger isopropyl alcohol (IPA) to precursor solutions containing KAuCl₄ and AgClO₄. With sufficient IPA concentration, varying the precursor ratio enabled control over the Au-Ag NP composition and produced alloy NPs with average sizes less than 10 nm and homogeneous molar compositions of Au and Ag. By investigating the kinetics of Ag⁺ and [AuCl₄]^- coreduction, we find that the reduction of [AuCl₄]^- into Au-Ag NPs occurs before most of the Ag⁺ is incorporated, giving us insight into the mechanism of Au-Ag NP formation.

Synthesis of Ag@Au core-shell NPs loaded with Ciprofloxacin as enhanced antimicrobial properties for the treatment and nursing care of Escherichia coli infection

Gold/Silver Hybrid Nanoparticles with Enduring Inhibition of Coronavirus Multiplication through Multisite Mechanisms

As a large enveloped RNA virus, coronavirus is of considerable medical and veterinary significance, and anticoronavirus treatment is challenging due to its biodiversity and rapid variability. In this study, Au@Ag nanorods (Au@AgNRs) were successfully synthesized by coating AuNRs with silver and were shown for the first time to have activity against the replication of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV). Viral titer analysis demonstrated that Au@AgNRs could inhibit PEDV infection by 4 orders of magnitude at 12 h post-infection, which was verified by viral protein expression analysis. The potential mechanism of action showed that Au@AgNRs could inhibit the entry of PEDV and decrease the mitochondrial membrane potential and caspase-3 activity. Additionally, we demonstrated that a large amount of virus proliferation can cause the generation of reactive oxygen species in cells, and the released Ag⁺ and exposed AuNRs by Au@AgNRs after the stimulation of reactive oxygen species has superior antiviral activity to ensure long-term inhibition of the PEDV replication cycle. The integrated results support that Au@AgNRs can serve as a potential therapeutic strategy to prevent the replication of coronavirus.

Synthesis of bimetallic silver-gold nanoparticle composites using a cellulose dope: Tunable nanostructure and its biological activity

Introducing functional metal nanoparticles (NPs) into flexible substrate is being increasingly attempted to expand their application. Here, we extend the synthesis of cellulose to its unmodified dope achieving freestanding nanocomposite decorated with bimetallic Ag-Au NPs through the one pot reaction. In the procedure, cellulose chain not only acts as a reducing agent but also a biocompatible support for NPs with a mean size of 7.9-9.7 nm. Meanwhile, changing the addition order of Ag⁺ and AuCl₄^- generated different atom arrangement in the bimetallic NPs. Moreover, the correlation of bioactivity to NP atom arrangement was studied. The result revealed that the nanocomposite containing NPs with an ultrathin Ag-rich outermost shell around an Au-rich core showed better bactericidal ability while lower cytotoxicity. In addition, the nanocomposite exhibited a sensitive SERS property for determination of R6G with a high enhancement factor of 10⁸.
