Generating in-Plane Orientational Order in Multilayer Films Prepared by Spray-Assisted Layer-by-Layer Assembly

Nature-Inspired Helicoidal Nanocellulose-Based Multi-Compartment Assemblies with Tunable Chiroptical Properties

Cellulose-based nanocomposites are highly appealing for the development of next-generation sustainable functional materials. Although many advances have been made in this direction, the true potential of fibrillar nanocomposites has yet to be realized because available fabrication approaches are inadequate for achieving precise structural control at the sub-micrometer scale. Here a spray-assisted alignment methodology of cellulose nanofibrils is combined with the layer-by-layer assembly into an additive manufacturing process in which the alignment direction of each cellulose layer is rationally selected to achieve thin films with a helicoidal arrangement of the nanofibrils. The helicoidal structure of the films is verified by measuring the circular dichroism (CD) of the samples. The sign and position of the structural CD peak show that the handedness and the pitch of the chiral structures can be easily tuned by deliberately selecting simple parameters, such as the number of consecutive cellulose layers sprayed in the same direction, and the angle of rotation between successive stacks of layers. To the authors' knowledge, this approach is unique as it offers the possibility to prepare complex nanocomposite architectures with various nanoscale-controlled sub-structures from different anisometric objects, which is enabling novel designs of composite films with damage-resistant and/or optical filtering functionalities.

Nano-achiral complex composites for extreme polarization optics

Composites from 2D nanomaterials show uniquely high electrical, thermal and mechanical properties1,2. Pairing their robustness with polarization rotation is needed for hyperspectral optics in extreme conditions3,4. However, the rigid nanoplatelets have randomized achiral shapes, which scramble the circular polarization of photons with comparable wavelengths. Here we show that multilayer nanocomposites from 2D nanomaterials with complex textured surfaces strongly and controllably rotate light polarization, despite being nano-achiral and partially disordered. The intense circular dichroism (CD) in nanocomposite films originates from the diagonal patterns of wrinkles, grooves or ridges, leading to an angular offset between axes of linear birefringence (LB) and linear dichroism (LD). Stratification of the layer-by-layer (LBL) assembled nanocomposites affords precise engineering of the polarization-active materials from imprecise nanoplatelets with an optical asymmetry g-factor of 1.0, exceeding those of typical nanomaterials by about 500 times. High thermal resilience of the composite optics enables operating temperature as high as 250 °C and imaging of hot emitters in the near-infrared (NIR) part of the spectrum. Combining LBL engineered nanocomposites with achiral dyes results in anisotropic factors for circularly polarized emission approaching the theoretical limit. The generality of the observed phenomena is demonstrated by nanocomposite polarizers from molybdenum sulfide (MoS2), MXene and graphene oxide (GO) and by two manufacturing methods. A large family of LBL optical nanocomponents can be computationally designed and additively engineered for ruggedized optics.

Orientation and stretching of supracolloidal chains of diblock copolymer micelles by spin-coating process

Supracolloidal chains consisting of nano- or micro-scale particles exhibit anisotropic properties not observed in individual particles. The orientation of the chains is necessary to manifest such characteristics on a macroscopic scale. In this study, we demonstrate the orientation of supracolloidal chains composed of nano-scale micelles of a diblock copolymer through spin-coating. We observed separate chains coated on a substrate with electron microscopy, and analyzed the orientation and stretching of the chains quantitatively with image analysis software. In drop-casting, the chains were coated randomly with no preferred orientation, and the degree of stretching exhibited an intrinsic semi-flexible nature. In contrast, spin-coated chains were aligned in the radial direction, and the apparent persistence length of the chain increased, confirming the stretching of the chain quantitatively. Furthermore, by incorporating fluorophores into supracolloidal chains and confirming the oriented chains with confocal fluorescence microscopy, it is demonstrated that oriented chains can be utilized as a template to align functional materials.

Biomimetic wafer-scale alignment of tellurium nanowires for high-mobility flexible and stretchable electronics

Flexible and stretchable thin-film transistors (TFTs) are crucial in skin-like electronics for wearable and implantable applications. Such electronics are usually constrained in performance owing to a lack of high-mobility and stretchable semiconducting channels. Tellurium, a rising semiconductor with superior charge carrier mobilities, has been limited by its intrinsic brittleness and anisotropy. Here, we achieve highly oriented arrays of tellurium nanowires (TeNWs) on various substrates with wafer-scale scalability by a facile lock-and-shear strategy. Such an assembly approach mimics the alignment process of the trailing tentacles of a swimming jellyfish. We further apply these TeNW arrays in high-mobility TFTs and logic gates with improved flexibility and stretchability. More specifically, mobilities over 100 square centimeters per volt per second and on/off ratios of ~104 are achieved in TeNW-TFTs. The TeNW-TFTs on polyethylene terephthalate can sustain an omnidirectional bending strain of 1.3% for more than 1000 cycles. Furthermore, TeNW-TFTs on an elastomeric substrate can withstand a unidirectional strain of 40% with no performance degradation.

Layer-by-layer designer nanoarchitectonics for physical and chemical communications in functional materials

Nanoarchitectonics, as a post-nanotechnology concept, constructs functional materials and structures using nanounits of atoms, molecules, and nanomaterials as materials. With the concept of nanoarchitectonics, asymmetric structures, and hierarchical organization, rather than mere assembly and organization of structures, can be produced, where rational physical and chemical communications will lead to the development of more advanced functional materials. Layer-by-layer assembly can be a powerful tool for this purpose, as exemplified in this feature paper. This feature article explores the possibility of constructing advanced functional systems based on recent examples of layer-by-layer assembly. We will illustrate both the development of more basic methods and more advanced nanoarchitectonics systems aiming towards practical applications. Specifically, the following sections will provide examples of (i) advancement in basics and methods, (ii) physico-chemical aspects and applications, (iii) bio-chemical aspects and applications, and (iv) bio-medical applications. It can be concluded that materials nanoarchitectonics based on layer-by-layer assembly is a useful method for assembling asymmetric structures and hierarchical organization, and is a powerful technique for developing functions through physical and chemical communication.

Resilient high oxygen barrier multilayer films of nanocellulose and polylactide

Nanocelluloses are promising high gas barrier materials for biobased food packaging, but they must be protected from water to preserve high performance. The respective O₂ barrier properties of different types of nanocelluloses were compared (nanofibers (CNF), oxidized nanofibers (CNF TEMPO) and nanocrystals (CNC)). The oxygen barrier performance for all types of nanocelluloses was similarly high. To protect the nanocellulose films from water, a multilayer material architecture was used with poly(lactide) (PLA) on the outside. To achieve this, a biobased tie layer was developed, using Corona treatment and chitosan. This allowed thin film coating with nanocellulose layers between 60 and 440 nm thickness. AFM images treated with Fast Fourier Transform showed the formation of locally-oriented CNC layers on the film. Coated PLA(CNC) films performed better (3.2 × 10^-20 m³.m/m².s.Pa) than PLA(CNF) and PLA(CNF TEMPO) (1.1 × 10^-19 at best), because thicker layers could be obtained. The oxygen barrier properties were constant during successive measurements at 0 % RH, 80 % RH and again at 0 % RH. This shows that PLA is sufficiently shielding nanocelluloses from water uptake to keep high performance in an extended range of RH and opens the way to high oxygen barrier films which are biobased and biodegradable.

The Effect of Pre-Stretched Substrate on the Electrical Resistance of Printed Ag Nanowires

One-dimensional nanomaterials have drawn attention as an alternative electrode material for stretchable electronics. In particular, silver nanowires (Ag NWs) have been studied as stretchable electrodes for strain sensors, 3D electronics, and freeform-shaped electronic circuits. In this study, Ag NWs ink was printed on the pre-stretched silicone rubber film up to 40% in length using a drop-on-demand dispenser. After printing, silicone rubber film was released and stretched up to 20% as a cyclic test with 10-time repetition, and the ratios of the resistance of the stretched state to that of the released state (R_stretched/R_released) were measured at each cycle. For Ag NWs electrode printed on the pre-stretched silicone rubber at 30%, R_stretched/R_released at 10% and 20% strain was 1.05, and 1.57, respectively, which is significantly less than about 7 for Ag NWs at the 10% strain without pre-stretched substrate. In the case of 10% strain on the 30% pre-stretched substrate, the substrate is stretched and the contact points with Ag NWs were not changed much as the silicone rubber film stretched, which meant that Ag NWs may slide between other Ag NWs. Ag NWs electrode on the 40% pre-stretched substrate was stretched, strain was concentrated on the Ag NWs electrode and failure of electrode occurred, because cracks occurred at the surface of silicone rubber film when it was pre-stretched to 40%. We confirmed that printed Ag NWs on the pre-stretched film showed more contact points and less electric resistance compared to printed Ag NWs on the film without pre-stretching.

Recent Advances in Ultrathin Chiral Metasurfaces by Twisted Stacking

Artificial chiral nanostructures have been subjected to extensive research for their unique chiroptical activities. Planarized chiral films of ultrathin thicknesses are in particular demand for easy on-chip integration and improved energy efficiency as polarization-sensitive metadevices. Recently, controlled twisted stacking of two or more layers of nanomaterials, such as 2D van der Waals materials, ultrathin films, or traditional metasurfaces, at an angle has emerged as a general strategy to introduce optical chirality into achiral solid-state systems. This method endows new degrees of freedom, e.g., the interlayer twist angle, to flexibly engineer and tune the chiroptical responses without having to change the material or the design, thus greatly facilitating the development of multifunctional metamaterials. In this review, recent exciting progress in planar chiral metasurfaces are summarized and discussed from the viewpoints of building blocks, fabrication methods, as well as circular dichroism and modulation thereof in twisted stacked nanostructures. The review further highlights the ever-growing portfolio of applications of these chiral metasurfaces, including polarization conversion, information encryption, chiral sensing, and as an engineering platform for hybrid metadevices. Finally, forward-looking prospects are provided.

Spray-Deposited Anisotropic Assemblies of Plasmonic Nanowires for Direction-Sensitive Strain Measurement

The development of nanoscale composites with hierarchical architecture and complex anisotropies enables the fabrication of new classes of devices. Stretchable strain sensors have been developed in the past for applications in various fields such as wearable electronics and soft robotics, yet the sensing capacities of most of these sensors are independent of the direction of deformation. In the present work, we report on the preparation of a direction-sensitive strain sensor using the anisotropic optical properties of a monolayer of oriented plasmonic 1D nano-objects. Grazing incidence spraying (GIS) is used for depositing a monolayer of in-plane aligned silver nanowires with a controlled density on a deformable and transparent substrate. Using the selective excitation of transverse and longitudinal localized plasmon resonance modes of silver nanowires by polarized UV-visible-NIR spectroscopy, we show that the macroscopic anisotropic properties of the monolayer upon stretching are highly dependent on the stretching direction and light polarization. Measuring the polarized optical properties of the anisotropic thin films upon stretching thus allow for retrieving both the local strain and the direction of the deformation using a simple model.

Fluorescence Signal Enhancement by a Spray-Assisted Layer-by-Layer Technique on Aluminum Tape Devices for Biosensing Applications

Layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembled polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) films are a simple yet elegant bottom-up technology to create films at the nano-microscale. This low-cost technology has been widely used as a universal functionalization technique on a broad spectrum of substrates. Biomolecules under investigation can be incubated onto films based on complementary charge interactions between the films and biomolecules. There is a great demand for developing an ultralow-cost biosensing device, which can optimally enhance the fluorescence signal of the adsorbed biomolecules from the traditional labeled sensing platforms. In this work, we have incorporated a blend of the conventional metal enhanced fluorescence technology and the PEM as a dielectric spacer and functionalized film, coated on an aluminum paper (tape)-based substrate. These device has been found to be capable of holding biomolecules in three-dimensional PEM space. The devices fabricated by the proposed spray LbL technique provide significant fluorescence signal enhancement by holding a relatively higher mass per volume of the adsorbed biomolecules, when compared to traditional spin- and dip-coating techniques. Interestingly, our proposed device has expressed a fluorescence enhancement factor, which is 9 times higher than PEM-functionalized glass-based devices. To demonstrate the practical utility of our devices, we also compared our devices to Whatman FAST slides. Our experimental fluorescence results are almost comparable to Whatman FAST slides. Such PEM devices fabricated on top of low-cost aluminum tape using a spray LbL technique give new insights into the future development of ultralow-cost, high-throughput, and disposable lab-on-chip diagnostic applications.

There is still plenty of room for layer-by-layer assembly for constructing nanoarchitectonics-based materials and devices

Nanoarchitectonics approaches can produce functional materials from tiny units through combination of various processes including atom/molecular manipulation, chemical conversion, self-assembly/self-organization, microfabrication, and bio-inspired procedures. Existing fabrication approaches can be regarded as fitting into the same concept. In particular, the so-called layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly method has huge potential for preparing applicable materials with a great variety of assembling mechanisms. LbL assembly is a multistep process where different components can be organized in planned sequences while simple alignment options provide access to superstructures, for example helical structures, and anisotropies which are important aspects of nanoarchitectonics. In this article, newly-featured examples are extracted from the literature on LbL assembly discussing trends for composite functional materials according to (i) principles and techniques, (ii) composite materials, and (iii) applications. We present our opinion on the present trends, and the prospects of LbL assembly. While this method has already reached a certain maturity, there is still plenty of room for expanding its usefulness for the fabrication of nanoarchitectonics-based materials and devices.

Protein nanofibrils and their use as building blocks of sustainable materials

The development towards a sustainable society requires a radical change of many of the materials we currently use. Besides the replacement of plastics, derived from petrochemical sources, with renewable alternatives, we will also need functional materials for applications in areas ranging from green energy and environmental remediation to smart foods. Proteins could, with their intriguing ability of self-assembly into various forms, play important roles in all these fields. To achieve that, the code for how to assemble hierarchically ordered structures similar to the protein materials found in nature must be cracked. During the last decade it has been demonstrated that amyloid-like protein nanofibrils (PNFs) could be a steppingstone for this task. PNFs are formed by self-assembly in water from a range of proteins, including plant resources and industrial side streams. The nanofibrils display distinct functional features and can be further assembled into larger structures. PNFs thus provide a framework for creating ordered, functional structures from the atomic level up to the macroscale. This review address how industrial scale protein resources could be transformed into PNFs and further assembled into materials with specific mechanical and functional properties. We describe what is required from a protein to form PNFs and how the structural properties at different length scales determine the material properties. We also discuss potential chemical routes to modify the properties of the fibrils and to assemble them into macroscopic structures.

Structure-Dependent Chiroptical Properties of Twisted Multilayered Silver Nanowire Assemblies

The optical properties of chiral plasmonic metasurfaces depend strongly on their architecture, in particular the orientation and spacing between the individual building blocks assembled into large arrays. However, methods to obtain chiral metamaterials with fully tunable chiroptical properties in the UV, visible, and near-infrared range are scarce. Here, we show that the chiroptical properties of silver nanowires assembled in helical nanostructures by grazing incidence spraying and Layer-by-Layer assembly can be finely tuned over a broad wavelength range using simple design principles. The angle between the oriented nanowire layers controls the intensity of the circular dichroism, reaching ellipticity values higher than 13° and g-factor values up to 1.6, while the shape of the circular dichroism spectra depends strongly on the spacing between the layers which can be tuned at the nanometer scale. The structure-dependent optical properties of the assembly are successfully modeled using a transfer matrix approach.

Biopolymer-Based Multilayer Capsules and Beads Made via Templating: Advantages, Hurdles and Perspectives

One of the undeniable trends in modern bioengineering and nanotechnology is the use of various biomolecules, primarily of a polymeric nature, for the design and formulation of novel functional materials for controlled and targeted drug delivery, bioimaging and theranostics, tissue engineering, and other bioapplications. Biocompatibility, biodegradability, the possibility of replicating natural cellular microenvironments, and the minimal toxicity typical of biogenic polymers are features that have secured a growing interest in them as the building blocks for biomaterials of the fourth generation. Many recent studies showed the promise of the hard-templating approach for the fabrication of nano- and microparticles utilizing biopolymers. This review covers these studies, bringing together up-to-date knowledge on biopolymer-based multilayer capsules and beads, critically assessing the progress made in this field of research, and outlining the current challenges and perspectives of these architectures. According to the classification of the templates, the review sequentially considers biopolymer structures templated on non-porous particles, porous particles, and crystal drugs. Opportunities for the functionalization of biopolymer-based capsules to tailor them toward specific bioapplications is highlighted in a separate section.

Nanoscale Bouligand Multilayers: Giant Circular Dichroism of Helical Assemblies of Plasmonic 1D Nano-Objects

Chirality is found at all length scales in nature, and chiral metasurfaces have recently attracted attention due to their exceptional optical properties and their potential applications. Most of these metasurfaces are fabricated by top-down methods or bottom-up approaches that cannot be tuned in terms of structure and composition. By combining grazing incidence spraying of plasmonic nanowires and nanorods and Layer-by-Layer assembly, we show that nonchiral 1D nano-objects can be assembled into scalable chiral Bouligand nanostructures whose mesoscale anisotropy is controlled with simple macroscopic tools. Such multilayer helical assemblies of linearly oriented nanowires and nanorods display very high circular dichroism up to 13 000 mdeg and giant dissymmetry factors up to g ≈ 0.30 over the entire visible and near-infrared range. The chiroptical properties of the chiral multilayer stack are successfully modeled using a transfer matrix formalism based on the experimentally determined properties of each individual layer. The proposed approach can be extended to much more elaborate architectures and gives access to template-free and enantiomerically pure nanocomposites whose structure can be finely tuned through simple design principles.

Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Films Based on Natural Polymers: From Fundamentals to Bio-Applications

Natural polymers are of great interest in the biomedical field due to their intrinsic properties such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity. Layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of natural polymers is a versatile, simple, efficient, reproducible, and flexible bottom-up technique for the development of nanostructured materials in a controlled manner. The multiple morphological and structural advantages of LbL compared to traditional coating methods (i.e., precise control over the thickness and compositions at the nanoscale, simplicity, versatility, suitability, and flexibility to coat surfaces with irregular shapes and sizes), make LbL one of the most useful techniques for building up advanced multilayer polymer structures for application in several fields, e.g., biomedicine, energy, and optics. This review article collects the main advances concerning multilayer assembly of natural polymers employing the most used LbL techniques (i.e., dipping, spray, and spin coating) leading to multilayer polymer structures and the influence of several variables (i.e., pH, molar mass, and method of preparation) in this LbL assembly process. Finally, the employment of these multilayer biopolymer films as platforms for tissue engineering, drug delivery, and thermal therapies will be discussed.

The Use of Layer-by-Layer Self-Assembly and Nanocellulose to Prepare Advanced Functional Materials

The current knowledge about the formation of layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assemblies using combinations of nanocelluloses (NCs) and polyelectrolytes is reviewed. Herein, the fundamentals behind the LbL formation, with a major focus on NCs, are considered. Following this, a special description of the limiting factors for the formation of LbLs of only NCs, both anionic and cationic, and the combination of NCs and polyelectrolytes/nanoparticles is provided. The ability of the NCs and polyelectrolytes to form dense films with excellent mechanical properties and with tailored optical properties is then reviewed. How low-density, wet stable networks of cellulose nanofibrils can be used as substrates for the preparation of antibacterial, electrically interactive, and fire-retardant materials by forming well-defined LbLs inside these networks is then considered. A short outlook of the possible uses of LbLs containing NCs is given to conclude.

Polarization-dependent optical band gap energy of aligned semiconducting titanium oxide nanowire deposits

Thin deposits of aligned semiconducting titanium oxide and of zinc oxide nanowires are prepared by grazing incidence spraying on transparent substrates. By measuring the transmittance of linearly polarized light of these anisotropic assemblies as compared to that of randomly oriented nanowires and of spherical nanoparticles, we find that titanium oxide nanowires exhibit an orientation-dependent variation of the apparent optical band gap energy at room temperature (>100 meV), depending on the direction of the polarization of the light with respect to the direction of alignment of the nanowires.

An exact inversion method for extracting orientation ordering by small-angle scattering

We outline a nonparametric inversion strategy for determining the orientation distribution function (ODF) of sheared interacting rods using small-angle scattering techniques. With the presence of direct inter-rod interaction and fluid mechanical forces, the scattering spectra are no longer characterized by the azimuthal symmetry in the coordinates defined by the principal directions of simple shear conditions, which severely compounds the reconstruction of ODFs based on currently available methods developed for dilute systems. Using a real spherical harmonic expansion scheme, the real-space ODFs are uniquely determined from the anisotropic scattering spectra and their numerical accuracy is verified computationally. Our method can be generalized to extract ODFs of uniaxially anisotropic objects under different flow conditions in a properly transformed reference frame with suitable basis vectors.

Assembly of Anisotropic Nanocellulose Films Stronger than the Original Tree

Natural structural materials frequently consist of multimaterial nanocomposites with complex superstructure giving rise to exceptional mechanical properties, but also commonly preventing access to their synthetic reproduction. Here we present the spin-assisted layer-by-layer assembly of anisotropic wood-inspired films composed of anionic cellulose nanofibrils and cationic poly(vinyl amine) possessing a tensile strength that exceeds that of the wood from which the fibers originate. The degree of orientation of the nanofibrils was studied by atomic force microscopy and depends strongly on the distance from the center of the spun surface. The nanofibrils are preferentially aligned in the direction of the shear flow, and consequently, the mechanical properties of such films differ substantially when measured parallel and perpendicular to the fibril orientation direction. For enabling a diversity of bioinspired applications including sensing, packaging, electronics, or optics, the preparation of nanocomposite materials and devices with anisotropic physical properties requires an extreme level of control over the positioning and alignment of nanoscale objects within the matrix material.

Wicking-Driven Evaporation Self-Assembly of Carbon Nanotubes on Fabrics: Generating Controlled Orientational Structures

Nanostructures with orientational order exhibit excellent electrical and optical properties; however, their construction on complex fabrics is challenging. Here, we demonstrate the potential of wicking-driven evaporation self-assembly in the oriented arrangement of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on fabrics. The solution-evaporation self-assembly in combination with the fabric wicking effect leads to convective flows along the fibers, which makes it possible to prepare orientational nanostructures over large fabric surface areas. The orientation of CNTs is controlled by the fluid drag force from the convective flow during drying, thus the interaction between the CNT and the solution is crucial. We show that the nanostructures of CNTs on fibers depend, for example, on the evaporation temperature, component concentration, and solution pH. Weakening the viscous connection of the fluid with CNTs can lead to an interesting eddy nanostructure of CNTs. The electrical conductivity of the assembled fabrics increases strongly with the degree of orientation and the assembly cycles of CNTs. In this work, the large-scale orientational order of nanomaterial achieved by wicking-driven evaporation self-assembly offers a new strategy for constructing three-dimensional oriented conductive networks in electronic textiles.

Printing of Colorful Cellulose Nanocrystalline Patterns Visible in Linearly Polarized Light

This study addresses the inkjet printing approach for fabrication of cellulose nanocrystalline (CNC) patterns with tunable optical properties varied by the thickness of deposited layers. In particular, forming functional patterns visible only in linearly polarized light is of the primary interest. The possibility of controlling the bright iridescent color response associated with the birefringence in the chiral anisotropic structure of inkjet-printed layers of CNC with sulfo-groups (s-CNC) has been thoroughly investigated. In this connection, we have elaborated an appropriate synthesis sequence for deriving printable inks in the form of sedimentation-stable s-CNC colloids with various concentrations of solid phase and experimentally determined the optimal regimes of their inkjet printing. For this purpose, the rheological parameters and s-CNC particle concentration have also been optimized. The study is accomplished with a comprehensive optical characterization of the deposited s-CNC layers with variable thickness, drying conditions, and the polarization state. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of inkjet printing technology to perform the precise fabrication of optically active s-CNC patterns with variable optical properties. These results are particularly relevant for applications requiring special conditions of color demonstration in security printing for such as anticounterfeiting applications, polygraphy decoration printing, and color photo filters.

Tuning the Chiroptical Properties of Elongated Nano-objects via Hierarchical Organization

Chiral materials appear as excellent candidates to control and manipulate the polarization of light in optical devices. In nanophotonics, the self-assembly of colloidal plasmonic nanoparticles gives rise to strong resonances in the visible range, and when such organizations are chiral, a strong chiroplasmonic effect can be observed. In the present work, we describe the optical properties of chiral artificial nanophotonic materials, Goldhelices, which are hierarchically organized by grazing incidence spraying. These Goldhelices are made by plasmonic nanoparticles (gold) grafted onto helical templates made from silica nanohelices. A comparison of oriented versus non-oriented surfaces has been performed by Mueller matrix polarimetry, showing the importance of the organization of the Goldhelices regarding their interaction with light. Moreover, mono- versus multilayer photonic films are created, and the measured optical properties are discussed and compared to simulations.

Axial Alignment of Carbon Nanotubes on Fibers To Enable Highly Conductive Fabrics for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding

Conductive coatings show great promise for next-generation electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding challenges on textile; however, their stringent requirements for electrical conductivity are difficult to meet by conventional approaches of increasing the loading and homogeneity of conductive nanofillers. Here, the axial alignment of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on fibers that were obtained by spontaneous capillary-driven self-assembly is shown on commercial cotton fabrics, and its great potential for EMI shielding is demonstrated. The aligned CNTs structurally optimize the conductive network on fabrics and yield an 81-fold increase in electrical conductivity per unit of CNT, compared with the disordered CNT microstructure. The high-efficiency electrical conductivity allows a several-micron-thick coating on insulating fabrics to endow an EMI shielding effectiveness of 21.5 dB in the X band and 20.8 dB in the Ku band, which meets the standard shielding requirement in commercial applications. It is among the minimum reported thicknesses for conductive nanocomposite coatings to date. Moreover, the coated fabrics with aligned CNTs possess a desirable stability upon bending, scratching, stripping, and even washing, which is attributed to the dense CNT packing in the aligned microarchitecture. This work presents the anisotropic structure on large areas by self-assembly, offering new opportunities for next-generation portable and wearable electronic devices.

Self-Limiting Assembly Approaches for Nanoadditive Manufacturing of Electronic Thin Films and Devices

Most electronics consist of functional thin films with tens of nanometer thicknesses. It is usually challenging to control the growth of these thin films using conventional solution-based approaches. Nanoadditive manufacturing, a method to deposit electronically desired molecules, polymers, or nanomaterials in a layer-by-layer (LbL) fashion, has emerged as a promising technique for the precise control of film growth and device fabrication. Here, basic principles of nanoadditive manufacturing approaches with self-limiting characteristics are summarized with a particular focus on Langmuir-Blodgett assembly and LbL assembly. Additively manufactured electronic thin films with properties of conductors, semiconductors, and dielectrics are reviewed, followed by a discussion of their application in various electronics, such as field-effect transistors, sensors, memory devices, photodetectors, light-emitting diodes, and electrochromic devices. Finally, challenges and future developments of these approaches are proposed. The resulting analysis reveals promising opportunities of nanoadditive manufacturing for the solution-based fabrication of electronic devices.

Structural Order in Cellulose Thin Films Prepared from a Trimethylsilyl Precursor

Biopolymer cellulose is investigated in terms of the crystallographic order within thin films. The films were prepared by spin-coating of a trimethylsilyl cellulose precursor followed by an exposure to HCl vapors; two different source materials were used. Careful precharacterization of the films was performed by infrared spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. Subsequently, the films were investigated by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction using synchrotron radiation. The results showed broad diffraction peaks, indicating a rather short correlation length of the molecular packing in the range of a few nanometers. The analysis of the diffraction patterns was based on the known structures of crystalline cellulose, as the observed peak pattern was comparable to cellulose phase II and phase III. The dominant fraction of the film is formed by two different types of layers, which are oriented parallel to the substrate surface. The stacking of the layers results in a one-dimensional crystallographic order with a defined interlayer distance of either 7.3 or 4.2 Å. As a consequence, two different preferred orientations of the polymer chains are observed. In both cases, polymer chain axes are aligned parallel to the substrate surface, and the orientation of the cellulose molecules are concluded to be either edge-on or flat-on. A minor fraction of the cellulose molecules form nanocrystals that are randomly distributed within the films. In this case, the molecular packing density was found to be smaller in comparison to the known crystalline phases of cellulose.

In this Perspective, dedicated to the memory of ACS Nano associate editor Prof. Dr. Helmuth Möhwald, we discuss the developments and applications that are to come in LbL assembly, focusing on coatings, bulk materials, membranes, nanocomposites, and delivery vehicles.

Nanofibrils in nature and materials engineering

Nanofibrillar materials, such as cellulose, chitin and silk, are highly ordered architectures, formed through the self-assembly of repetitive building blocks into higher-order structures, which are stabilized by non-covalent interactions. This hierarchical building principle endows many biological materials with remarkable mechanical strength, anisotropy, flexibility and optical properties, such as structural colour. These features make nanofibrillar biopolymers interesting candidates for the development of strong, sustainable and biocompatible materials for environmental, energy, optical and biomedical applications. However, recreating their architecture is challenging from an engineering perspective. Rational design approaches, applying a combination of theoretical and experimental protocols, have enabled the design of biopolymer-based materials through mimicking nature's multiscale assembly approach. In this Review, we summarize hierarchical design strategies of cellulose, silk and chitin, focusing on nanoconfinement, fibrillar orientation and alignment in 2D and 3D structures. These multiscale architectures are discussed in the context of mechanical and optical properties, and different fabrication strategies for the manufacturing of biopolymer nanofibril-based materials are investigated. We highlight the contribution of rational material design strategies to the development of mechanically anisotropic and responsive materials and examine the future of the material-by-design paradigm.

Highly Oriented Nanowire Thin Films with Anisotropic Optical Properties Driven by the Simultaneous Influence of Surface Templating and Shear Forces

The functional properties of nanoparticle thin films depend strongly on the arrangement of the nanoparticles within the material. In particular, anisotropic optoelectronic properties can be achieved through the aligned assembly of 1D nanomaterials such as silver nanowires (AgNWs). However, the control of the hierarchical organization of these nanoscale building blocks across multiple length scales and over large areas is still a challenge. Here, we show that the oriented deposition of AgNWs using grazing incidence spraying of the nano-object suspensions on a substrate comprising parallel surface wrinkles readily produces highly oriented monolayer thin films on macroscopic areas (>5 × 5 mm²). The use of textured substrates enhances the degree of ordering as compared to flat ones and increases the area over which AgNWs are oriented. The resulting microscopic linear arrangement of AgNWs evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reflects in a pronounced macroscopic optical anisotropy measured by conventional polarized UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy. The enhanced ordering obtained when spraying is done in the same direction as the wrinkles makes this approach more robust against small rotational offsets during preparation. On the contrary, the templating effect of the wrinkle topography can even dominate the shear-driven alignment when spraying is performed perpendicular to the wrinkles: the concomitant but opposing influence of topographic confinement (alignment along the wrinkles) and of spray-induced shear forces (orientation along the spraying direction) lead to films in which the predominant orientation of AgNWs gradually changes from one direction to its perpendicular one over the same substrate in a single processing step. This demonstrates that exploiting the subtle balance between shear forces and substrate-nanowire interactions mediated by wrinkles offers a new way to control the self-assembly of nanoparticles into more complex patterns.

Significant Enhancement of Thermal Conductivity in Nanofibrillated Cellulose Films with Low Mass Fraction of Nanodiamond

High thermal conductive nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) hybrid films based on nanodiamond (ND) were fabricated by a facile vacuum filtration technique. In this issue, the thermal conductivity (TC) on the in-plane direction of the NFC/ND hybrid film had a significant enhancement of 775.2% at a comparatively low ND content (0.5 wt %). The NFC not only helps ND to disperse in the aqueous medium stably but also plays a positive role in the formation of the hierarchical structure. ND could form a thermal conductive pathway in the hierarchical structures under the intermolecular hydrogen bonds. Moreover, the hybrid films composed of zero-dimensional ND and one-dimensional NFC exhibit remarkable mechanical properties and optical transparency. The NFC/ND hybrid films possessing superior TC, mechanical properties, and optical transparency can open applications for portable electronic equipment as a lateral heat spreader.

Spray-assisted alignment of Layer-by-Layer assembled silver nanowires: a general approach for the preparation of highly anisotropic nano-composite films

The present article focuses on the build-up and the properties of oriented silver nanowire monolayer films and Layer-by-Layer assembled multilayer films. We describe the template-free oriented spray-assisted assembly of silver nanowires at solid/air-interfaces using Grazing Incidence Spraying, a simple and versatile approach that allows the formation of highly oriented thin films with a tunable density and in-plane orientation. Depending on the spraying conditions the nematic order parameter, which describes the angular spread of misaligned nanowires, can be as high as 0.98 (a value of 1.00 corresponding to a perfectly parallel alignment). The combination with the Layer-by-Layer assembly allows building multilayer thin films possessing in-plane anisotropy. In order to demonstrate that the local alignment does not cancel out on the macroscopic scale but leads to direction-dependent properties, we use linearly polarized UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy to probe the selective excitation of the transverse and longitudinal localized plasmon resonances of the nanowires. The polarization efficiency of the thin films increases strongly with the in-plane density, the degree of orientation, and the number of silver nanowire layers. Multilayer films containing 4 layers of nanowires oriented in the same direction reach a polarization efficiency of up to 97% in the near-infrared region.
